A pleasant pit-stop.

By Gina D |

The eclectic almost Burning Man like decor attracted me to this bar. It was a much needed pit-stop for a bite to eat and drink. A pleasant bar, made even better with a cordial barman who spent time talking over food and drink options. Brought over a nice sampler and also a nice shot too. I’m glad I took a leap of faith to go in. The drink, plus the fried shrimp and fries were all on point! Well worth the high rating on Trip Advisor.

Great athmosphere

By Anders G |

If you're looking for a relaxed place with great service and cool athmosphere, this is the place. The ribs were OK, however not the best I've had. My friends had club sandwich and the fries was excellent. So was the service and drinks. I can highly recommend the place, especially if you have kids since there's a model train over the bar that probably can amuse the small ones.

Great +1 Service

By Claus H |

We had a well tasting fish sandwich and a glass of beer, which equal we had not tasted for a long time. We tested a couple of beers, before our decision. This place radiated the finish Irish food culture. Down to earth personal service. You ought to try it.

Great atmosphere.

By Joanne |

Stopped here to recharge our batteries after walking nearly all day! We found an extremely brightly decorated and very quirky pub! We were introduced to the cider Angry Orchard which was incredibly cold and very refreshing! The barman was very helpful and gave us directions to our next stop. Would def recommend this friendly pub.

Must visit when in Chicago

By Cruiselover1963 |

Local establishment seems to be a hot spot. Always crazy busy even on a Thursday at 4pm. Tavern food is always good. Drinks are always terrific. Great service given how busy they are. Do not miss going during Christmas when decorated...festive to say the least.

Beer & Sports

By Tracy S |

We stopped into this bar for a couple of drinks and to watch the final round of the PGA Championship. Great atmosphere and good cold beer. Services was good. Food was pretty good. I would visit again if I were in the neighborhood.

great service in a nice atmosphere

By crt1966 |

spent several hours at this location, had a fantastic time, nice quaint atmosphere with fantastic service. good food and good people

Great venue and service, shame they've lost the pork chops

By mgs83 |

I love Chicago and it's different districts and all in all this remains a stand out place. Relaxed and cosy, they always celebrate all nature of festivities and events. Choice of drinks are excellent and the food is too notch. I was sad to find the pork chops are no more though, why why why???

Fun atmosphere, great food

By Mepo_Chris |

We stopped in for a late lunch and had great service and great food. There is a large selection of beer available. The French Dip sandwich was excellent.

A reliably good time

By jackie s |

Somehow I always end up here when I'm in Chicago. The place is familiar and comfortable and always a good time. The staff is friendly and drinks are always easy to get. The only downside is that the place can, like any good bar, get uncomfortably crowded on busy nights.

Food is great and bartenders are cool. Steak salad is very good and so is the reuben. Every day is happy hour from 4-7pm. One of Divisions best bars.

Favorite placr

By Stanley L |

We go here a lot, especially for breakfast on weekends. Today it was for lunch. On Fridays like today Butch's had the absolute world's best New England clam chowder. The Irish brown bread isn't shabby either.

expensive beers but crowded

By s g |

regular drafts are too expensive for this place. the place was crowded but i dont know why. nothing really special here. you can have more fun for cheaper other places

Fine local establishment

By Ron B |

A Great Place to have a Drink & Lunch

By chaz4021 |

Butch's is an old time Chicago neighborhood bar. The staff is nice and the drinks are great. Excellent hamburgers.

Angry hostile rude doorman

By texlaca |

Came in on a slow Thursday night with coworkers ( a large group ) and was screamed at by the doorman that we had 1 minute to consume the beverages ( which we just received ) pay our tabs and leave ! This was @ 3:08 a.m. This is a 4 a.m. Bar! Our group is in the industry and we just got off work! Luther was so incredibly rude and hostile we will never ever come back! Worst experience I've ever had in any bar in Chicago! Too many bars in Chicago too ever go back!

Good food

By lippylinda |

I wasn't feelin too good and wanted soup lol! As we walked by I noticed a sign for soup...you see where I'm going with this? We popped in and it was wing Tuesday...so my husband had the wings and a hotdog...I had soup n salad. Food was really nice and good value...service was excellent.

True Irish feel

By BigWooly |

My friends and I spent Friday night enjoying the vibe of the place. It was busy but service was still very efficient. Prices were good to. Great place for a catch up with friends.

Decent Irish Bar

By MeTigGirl |

Most of the staff was excellent (although one bouncer seemed pretty eager to show anyone how tough he was). Other than that, wait staff and bartenders were great with a good selection of draft beers. Outdoor space a little lacking

Really Great !

By lovestotravel1992 |

Had a group of 16 on a very busy day after Thanksgiving. They were efficient , accommodating , happy that we were there ! Service from Steve was exceptional , food was good solid tavern fare , great atmosphere . Job well done !

Nice Lunch Today - Recommend

By PrMichaelM |

My son and I enjoyed a nice lunch today. He had the Bleu burger and I had the special - a pot roast grilled cheese on sourdough. The fries were nicely seasoned and hand cut. The coleslaw was unusually creamy and especially good if you like slaw. Matthew was a pleasant server and we will look forward to another visit yet this summer!

One of my new favorite places!!

By Ronnie Mackin |

Man I love this place. A buddy of mine recommended I try Butch’s out. The ambience was incredible and the place was packed at 3:00 on a Saturday. Great people and Ashley begins the bar was fantastic.

Brunch with a distinctive Christmas flair

By Allen21096 |

Butch McGuire's has been around for as long as I can remember. For brunch with kids, it is a great place. The food is delicious. The eggs benedict entrees are great with a bloody mary. And there are sandwiches are as good. Much will depend on what you have a taste for. The service is fantastic. All of the servers work to keep all of the guests happy, by checking in on them. This is a bar and at night, expect a bar. At Christmas time, however, Butch McGuire's is decorated with so much Christmas stuff hanging from the ceiling, along with the trains that circle above you, that kids are easily entertained. My family has been coming to Butch's for Christmas brunches and it is THE place to go for a Saturday or Sunday brunch with the family. We'll be back as we have come back for about 25 years with the kids and now the grandkids. Great job! Great Christmas tradition!

Good place to grab a bite and a beer

By TravelerLover1983 |

We had a few hours to kill before flying home, and McGuire's was close to our hotel. Tyler was a great server! The manager was friendly. He was doing his final creations for their special Fall cocktail menu. Neat that they have speciality cocktails changing with the seasons. Great wings, dinner salad, and nice selection of reasonably priced beers on tap. Fun Irish style bar!

St. Patty's Day fun

By blakflag21361 |

My wife and I had a great time at Butch's on St. Patty's Day. Extremely crowded but the manager was very helpful in finding us a table. He put us in a booth with another couple and we ended up staying for hours talking with them and other around us. Fish and chips were excellent. The clam chowder, not so much. I loved the place enough that I bought a t-shirt.

Stopped in for a quick appetizer

By nicolelaswell |

We just got into town and were looking for a quick appetizer and this places was recommended. We ordered the 3 Irish Egg Rolls and they were good and there were plenty. The service was prompt and friendly even though they were a little busy. We would definitely come back!!

Great place for a Bloody Mary and breakfast!

By jamesammons69 |

After a long night of having fun in Chicago I'm always looking for a place to go and feed my face. I most always end up at Butch's. Service is always good. Bloody a are great and the chorizo hash is awesome. Can't go wrong here!

Go to place for Saturday morning breakfast!

By Diane K |

We enjoy going to Butch's for our favorite Saturday morning breakfast in the neighborhood. They open at 8 on Saturday's. It is a little older quieter crowd - and a fun way to start the weekend. The breakfast is always good - especially the "specials". Some day I'll have to try Gregg's special of "eggs anyway you like them and half a slab of ribs"! If you are in town in December - be sure to stop by to see the multiple trains that are set-up in both of their rooms and many Christmas decorations.

Great food, great service, great ambiance!

By Allen21096 |

It is hard to imagine a bar on Rush St. being a great place to take kids, but every Christmas season, the bar transforms into a winter/ Christmas wonderland with lights and hanging figures, as well as their trains. We went on a Saturday and when we found that they opened earlier than 11 a.m., we thought we would all get there at 10 a.m. and miss a bit of the crowd. Parking turned out to be easy on the street, at that time. There were 7 adults, 1 child, 2 toddlers and 1 baby and we were seated as we came in. The food was great. The chili that I had was among the best that I have tasted. We did have someone try the car bomb French toast which she apparently really enjoyed. Everyone else had eggs benedict and the kids had pancakes. The Bloody Mary's are very tasty. Our server, Steve C., was great. Without asking, he made sure that the kids food was brought out first. He was very attentive and personable, even talking about the history of Butch McGuire's. This has become a Christmas tradition for our family and, actually, when we talked about it at the table, it seems like we have been going there for Christmas with different generations of kids for the last 29 years. Make it a point to get here, you'll love it!

A great place anytime but we had Thanksgiving there

By proach1015 |

Thanksgiving and watching the Packers on TV!! Perfect! What a fun place- and the Guinness is top notch!! We walked from the Allerton Hotel and we are early 60's!!! lol. So much fun!!!

Great pub to visit at the holidays

By SOGChicago |

Great tourist trap....cause it gets us Chicagoans. Great service, really great pub grub, cold great choices of brews. Servers are used to kids for lunch and are really patient. A bit overpriced, but worth it. Come in for lunch, bring the kiddies to see the decorations. Then, come back with your mates.

Holiday Spirit! Yes!

By kimmysue42 |

Such a fun bar! If you are looking for a place to celebrate the season- this is the place! Lights, moving trains, etc. Casual bar with a festive atmosphere! We loved it! We enjoyed our drinks, watched football & chatted the afternoon away. The mini Ruebens’ and the chicken tenders were delicious! We all had a great time!

If you Don't Like Butch Mc Guires then get out of Chicago!

By broseph_von_bro |

Alrighty, Butch Mc Guires is a Chicago staple, plain and simple. I remember during the days of McFaddens we would go to Butch's as a pre-game to have a good time before making our way to the chaotic void that was McFaddens. The Christmas lights at Butch's are really festive and the train adds a nice touch. The staff are really kind and good for a laugh. The drinks are good and at a terrific value. Enjoy.

Business trip from San Diego

By Kirby B |

As a businessman, I know the community well and sadly have to say this place has disappointed each time I've tryed to give it another chance. If you're a tourist I would avoid this place entirely due to bad management, bad food, and bad bar service. The one bartender in particular, I hope I remembered his name correctly, Gary, I believe, Rude from the beginning, I understand their is a pandemic going on and all, but totally disrespecting me was uncalled for. The assistant manager working told me his name was Justin, which I think is a lie, because after I returned to the bar and went back in and asked for him his name, he told me something entirely different. I plan to file a complaint with the owner, whom I've met and he knows me well. Very displeased with this establishment, there is far better to in the area that will serve you better! I'm told the new place that's happening is Oldtown community on Wells St, not far from this train wreck of a bar.

Fun, Popular Little Place

By Maggie M |

The place was busy which attested to its good food. It's a pub, and gets quite crowded at times. It's busy, and the food is good. We had fun because the staff was lively and kept the atmosphere hopping. We were satisfied with the food and the prices, and would go back again.

Thanksgiving at Butchs a family tradition

By Pecpmc |

We love the atmosphere the pub grub and the drinks. Decorations and the trains are so special. Another chicago must see.

Great beer!

By jash2009 |

Fantastic little bar in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. Huge range of drinks, friendly people and a really nice atmosphere. My advice is to go there without question.

Perfect place to grab a drink and eats

By Alice M |

Stopped in there on a Friday early afternoon, couldn’t pass up a Bloody Mary ... and a sandwich.Had a cup of their soup and half sandwich - was so delicious.

Good Bar, Good Food

By T Z |

Great location, friendly staff, good drinks and high quality food at a decent price. I can't wait to go back.

Totally Real and NOT Pretentious

By Mark G |

Just had a Reuben here and Matthew was the bartender. Really nice experience. Good food and nice to have a "real person" working with me here (Matthew). The meal was reasonably priced, the food was certainly good, but the best part is that this is NOT some corporate owned restaurant this is Phony and just trying to "upsell you" for their target numbers. It is close to the Chicago Gold Coast but not too far and worth a short walk. I do recommend it for all of the reasons I cite above. Thanks Matthew for being real!!

Great stop

By nicolevail |

Drinks cold, nachos very good. Generous portions. We had a Smithwicks and High Noon along with chicken nachos, bill before tip, $35, not cheap but good value for the area. Bar dark ambiance.

Not perfect but pretty good.

By Patrick J |

I had a drink or two here in 1981 but had not been back so I was looking forward to it. My waitress' name was Crystal and she was friendly and helpful with my odd questions and trouble between several likely burgers. She looked a little like she liked to smile, so asking for help was easy. I had a regular burger with smoked Gouda. It was worth the eating and generous. I also had chili instead of fries. I almost had fries anyway because the kitchen is proud of them and tried to add some to my dish anyway, what generous guys. I had chili instead. I was going for a cupcke later and wanted to save my dessert spot) I am a chili guy and very hard on quality and taste. This chili gets an easy 8 and in special circumstances an 8.5. Different chilis are good for different occasions. This is not good for chili dogs but good for burgers. In the dish it is very good but it would be best with a good beer. I is funny as I don't drink beer but I used too and this chili is just made for a couple guys, some chips, a TV and a beer. I never thought that I would say that.

Great pub

By Jason M |

Was in Chicago for buisness and had to check out a real Irish Pub. Guinness was cold and Ruben sandwich was thick...what else do you need?

Most lively bar in the city

By DavidL120584 |

Absolute gem of a pub. Guaranteed lively night here, great crowd, great atmosphere and an all round great pub. Great staff to foot. Really enjoyable pub and one of the few authentic spots still left in Chicago. Well worth a visit.

Chicago hot dog

By littlemillie |

Our Tour Manager recommended that we tried a Chicago Hot Dog while in Chicago so this is the place we chose to do it. Good food and very friendly service

Nice bar in a good area

By kaitlin8899 |

Friends and I walked in on a Friday night and had so much fun! We were surprised to see how bright it was inside, many lights lining the ceiling in each room. The bar tenders didn't seem so happy, but they were taking care of many people so we understood. It was also nice to have a bar waiter walking around making sure everyone had drinks. Bathrooms were clean, and nicely lit. Definitely should go if looking for more of a chill bar for sitting and talking.

Feels like a Chicago Classic

By kentuckygirl125 |

A favorite lunch stop when visiting Chicago. PBR on tap, a great Bloody Mary and that Shorty Grilled Cheese is to die for!! It's a great place to people watch. Staff and bartenders are friendly and service is spot on.

THE place to go for St. Pat's Day!

By FloridaRetiredProf |

Four of us spent several hours in this pub as we were in Chicago on an all girls' trip. What a great place. Decorations were phenomenol. The atmosphere was so festive. The staff was amazing. So efficient, friendly, polite and never lost their cool among the zaniness. The bartenders were so spot on! We met several great folks and had an incredible time. The place was slammed but everyone was respectful and fun loving. Props to the owners and management. We already made plans to return St. Patrick's Day next year.

Crazy place, but fun!

By Willard F |

Went for lunch and had a burger + a beer. The place was packed with people from all over the world. Sat next to a couple at the bar who knew my wife's family quite well....

Best sweet potato fries anywhere

By Judi S |

We ate dinner there a couple of weeks ago. Butch's is famous for their burger, which I enjoyed very much. But the best part was the sweet potato fries. They were the crispiest I've ever had and I loved them. Also for those who like tequila, they have the best select I've every seen in an Irish Pub!

This place is great.

By IDDC |

We were tourists and told to go there. Clearly it's a well established bar as it seemed to have a lot of locals in there. Food was terrific. Pork sandwich and beef sliders were great. Don't miss it if you visiting Chicago. Complete with trains circling the room.

Chicago's original singles bar

By Taylor B |

The reputation of Butch McGuire's Tavern preceded it. Long before my wife and I moved into the Gold Coast neighborhood, we had heard about Butch's. For years, we walked past the location at 20 West Division Street on the Rush/Division bar corridor while shopping at the farmers' market. We glanced at the people enjoying Saturday brunch. Because I don't drink, we never ventured inside. Then I learned Butch's is a lot more than a singles bar. Opened in 1961, it is a popular hangout for Gold Coast and Old Town singles. It is estimated that over 10,000 marriages have resulted from encounters at Butch's. The Harvey Wallbanger was invented here. It was the first bar to serve Bloody Marys with a celery stick garnish. And, of course, Christmas at Butch's is a Chicago tradition. What many people, including me, weren't aware of was Butch's is a pub that pairs a boisterous bar scene with burgers, salads and other pub fare. Yes, I can order a glass of ginger ale. Butch's menu is extensive and the bar food is exquisite. Brunch is an all-day event. Start with cheeseburger sliders or Reuben sliders or chicken tenders or Buffalo wings or Irish egg rolls, a Butch original fried wantons filled with corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut and covered with 1,000 Island dressing. Then order a bowl of chili or chicken tortilla soup or clam chowder. For the main course, you can't beat corned beef hash and scrambled eggs or French toast or pork chops and eggs or fish and chips or ribs and eggs or pot roast Benedict or pancakes and sausage. How about a breakfast pizza? Butch's version is a home-made thin crust topped with scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, bacon and mozzarella cheese covered with hollandaise sauce. Bet you haven't ordered that anywhere else. If you prefer a sandwich, the classic cheeseburger or Chicago-style hot dog or McGuire's jumbo burger will satisfy your palate. After all, Butch's has been satisfying hungry and thirsty customers--and singles--for more than 55 years.

Great Reuben

By ahacreative |

Great reuben sandwich, and really good burger, along with good beer list on tap made this a good dinner stop on Division.

Great find!

By Alayna G |

Was walking near our hotel in the Gold Coast and stumbled upon this place. It was afternoon and not busy, The waitress made great suggestions and even let us sample the featured beer. It was taco night, and those things were amazing!!!!! We even came back the next night for pizza and it was even better. It was very crowded that Friday night, so keep that in mind. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and staff - top notch.

A classic not to be missed...

By mayhem52 |

If you like classic Irish bars, this is for you. Properly poured Guinness, and good pub food. Our server, Amanda, was friendly and attentive. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Love this place!

By Derek C |

My team was sponsored by this bar for beach volleyball. Great tacos on Tuesday! Love the environment and the venue. I always try to go here when I'm in the area! weekend vibes are also amazing!

Love This Pub

By VacationDays365 |

We tried Butch McGuire's base on the recommendation of our hotel concierge and we were not disappointed. Our waitress, Crystal, was fantastic and we felt like regulars after a few minutes. It's a pub so, of course, there is a great selection of beer, but for the non-beer drink (me) they have a surprisingly good selection of wine. We started with Irish Nachos, which were delicious, and enjoyed our perfectly cooked burgers and fries. Such a fun, welcoming place and we were sorry we didn't have time for a return visit.

Bring your kids for the Christmas decorations

By Allen21096 |

Although a Rush and Division St. bar, during the Christmas season, Butch McGuire's goes all out for the Christmas decorations and really changes into a family brunch restaurant on the weekends. It is worth coming here for those Christmas memories with your kids and grandkids. Food is good, and so are the Bloody Marys. See you next Christmas!

Great Pub !

By Larry W |

We were walking around and found this place. Kid friendly so that was perfect. Ambiance was just like a neighborhood pub should be. Food was great, had two orders of the Irish Eggrolls, they were outstanding, all the food is home made. Wait staff was helpful and friendly, Steve was very good and gave us tips about other areas of the city. Will visit again.

Lots of atmosphere

By Laurina c |

Great little bar ,serving lovely food. Staff were friendly and helpful. Service was good and fairly quick . It was a busy bar and nice to see the locals

Rugby weekend

By Donal123OC |

Arrived in Chicago on Friday for the rugby and met friends in this fine establishment. It was both welcoming and electric. So much so, we returned after the rugby and again on Sunday. Beer flowing, jukebox playing and customers singing. Great customers, great staff and a great session. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hmmm....I'd give a miss.

By Geilstyle |

Sat outside this place, first interaction with it was to be given out for smoking! And it was a little abrupt and not particularly courteously delivered. Anyway, literally had to move 1 foot to the designated zone. The guy taking orders, middle aged, big guy....well I might as well not have been there. He was more interested in impressing my GF with predictable babble. Food was edible. Nothing special. I wouldn't recommend the place overall. We didn't return over the rest of our week in Chicago, despite staying quite close. The atmosphere wasn't great either. As an Irish man I can resolutely say, nothing authentic about this "Irish bar"....

Very Cool

By Tom S |

It's apparently a Chicago must go to place. Rumor is it has a staircase to an underground subway long abandoned, that's how long it's been around. The food is good to above average, it's reasonably priced, and the servers are really nice. Struck me as a favorite for the over 30's crowd.

A good choice for dinner

By DonaldYokum |

We chose Butch Mc Guires for dinner principally because it was right around the corner from our hotel. Plus, the menu gave us a wide variety of choices. The ambiance was very comfortable, a barroom/dining establishment, and the service was very friendly and accommodating. We chose to split a wedge salad, which was well prepared; I had a short rack of baby back ribs, which had a lovely sauce and were well prepared. Don't recall what My Lady had, but she was very pleased with it. Should also add that there was a more than adequate wine list, and that they did a fine Martini. All in all, a very satisfactory dining experience!

Eclectic Place for a Beverage

By Michele C |

Attended an event at the back portion of the Tavern. The mini-burgers were great, the port burgers were good as well. The service was dependent on the server. Tyler was an amazing server. It is a fun place with a very busy and lively bar.

FUN FUN FUN

By redlips24065 |

The food the service the whole staff were funny and friendly the whole decor feels like ireland the grown up french toast was out of this world the bloody marys need a little boost but just ask they will give you extra ingredients

Great Chicago Dog!

By gatorfans1218 |

We stopped in here for lunch on a Thursday. The service was average but the Chicago Dog was amazing and very reasonably priced. They also had a very large selection of local craft beers.

Fun and Festive

By M D |

First time here and I really loved the decor. Had the feelings of a small hometown restaurant which I really liked. I had a burger and it was delicious. The Christmas decorations were fun and well done. I will def come back to this location

Great Christmas atmosphere

By Allen21096 |

It is a great Christmas experience for a family with younger kids, or families period, to come to Butch McGuire's during the Christmas season. It is beautifully decorated with many of your favorite characters, all decked out in Christmas attire, hanging from the ceiling. And the kids are fascinated by the trains that run above them. Many of the decorations are Disney oriented, but it is just a beautiful, twinkling place for a family brunch. Service is excellent and the brunch items were really good.

Super fun

By Kim E |

Super fun place. warm, inviting, laid back atmosphere. Get place to stop in the middle of the afternoon for drinks. Gotta love the year round Christmas decorations.

Great place!

By Craig B |

We went. We ordered. We drank. Had a great time in this cool place! The staff is great especially our bartender V.A. Like the atmosphere and decorations!

Yummy food

By Asl83 |

We meet friend downtown for a birthday party and had dinner at Butch McGuires. The food was fantastic! I had a jalapeño burger and fries and it was so delicious and filling. Fun atmosphere and lots to do around the Area.

Great Xmas Atmosphere

By Patrick |

Full bar and great environment with all the Christmas lights in place and the train running around the bar. Good selection of beer and great food make it a great place to be!

Good fun, food and drinks.

By Jerry D |

This is a lively place but all of the staff is very friendly. Their prices are very reasonable for Chicago. The food was very good and the service was excellent. This is a must stop if you visit the bars on Division Street.

A great restaurant and bar year round not just the holidays

By xnavyron |

I have been going to Butch McGuire‘s ever since I moved to Chicago 16 years ago. This is truly a local neighborhood bar where the staff is friendly and the food is good and the drinks flow easily. If you ever want to find out about Chicago Butch Mcguires will tell you tales from long ago while playing you with whiskey beer and cocktails. Try to get a seat at the bar stir up a conversation with locals and with the bartenders. I would recommend ordering the ribs they fall off the bone they come with a generous portion of fries beans and coleslaw you’ll leave feeling full and happy

Great place to get the Christmas Spirit

By Mick 'n Jo |

Butch McQuires is our go to place on Thanksgiving weekend to get the Christmas Spirit. Besides great beer, you cannot miss the Christmas Decorations.

Great friendly bar

By Brian M |

Great bar in a great location in Chicago. Bar and waiting staff are very friendly the moment you enter. Good choice of food and I particularly loved the ribs.

Festive Christmas Destination

By Chicaree |

If you are in Chicago, your holiday itinerary should include a stop at Butch McGuires. It's definitely sensory overload, LOUD & packed with all ages (although its a tough place to bring small kids) but so worth it. It is decorated from floor to ceiling, (I heard 250+ man hours to install) be sure to look up to see the Christmas Train. Put your name in at the door, be prepared to wait. Scout open bar stools until your name is called. It's better than bar food, probably not the best meal you will have in Chicago, but it is absolutely worth stopping in for a drink or two & grabbing a burger, sandwich or brunch. Merry Christmas !

St. Patrick's Day

By Sarc1 |

If you are in Chicago for St. Patrick's Day, then stop by Butch McGuire's where they decorate and celebrate St. Patrick's Day like it is Christmas! Seriously fun time and great atmosphere. Great little street of bars.

butch mcguire's

By michelle p |

very fun bar restaurant. cool decor. friendly staff. went there for the blackhawks play off game against the wild.

Hello Christmas, good food, service and drinks!

By austinteri |

We went to Butch's in mid January, and they were still all decked out for Christmas. It was awesome! I think they correctly subscribe to not being concerned about overkill, because the place has it going on! Service was outstanding, Ruben and Prime Rib sliders are OUTSTANDING, and the onion rings were also good. This is a happening place. They have TV's with games going on all over the place.

Just what I

By diverdownfbh |

remembered from 25 years ago. We got there late on a Thursday evening 11pm. This establishment has been in town for over 50 years and a must see when you are searching for a watering hole. Staff is very attentive. If you are looking for change of pace from Lagunitas then order up a Scrimshaw. Enjoy the bar

Great local bar

By cranky355 |

Been here before and will come back. Food and service was good. Best place on Division to eat and drink. Great selection of booze and beer.

Monday bargain

By betona |

They had all meals 9.99 or less on Monday and coupled with half-off happy hour local beer made for a reasonably priced dinner. The jalapeño burger was larger than I expected but no heat in the peppers-nbd. I ate at the bar and the bartender was attentive so all went well on a quiet Monday. It's a pub, so my rating is in that genre-fine dining it is not.

Great!

By IowAndrew |

Very down to earth local feel. Great food! It's a little cramped when it's crowded but it has a great atmosphere

Great pub and wonderful people!

By kathydaffy88 |

My parents met at Butch McGuire's 45 years ago so when my boyfriend and I booked a week long trip to Chicago this was our first stop. We loved the place so much we wound up there nearly every day for a nightcap and to chat with the locals, who were more than friendly and quite entertaining. The staff was welcoming as well (have to give a shout out to Paige!) and the beer selection was huge with reasonable prices. Steins dangled from the ceiling, Irish emblems were everywhere and there were too many cute knick-knacks to count. The music was great - everything from Sam Cooke to Bob Dylan to more recent hits. Although we didn't eat there the menu had a wide variety of favorite bar fare (burgers, nachos, pizza, etc.) that were also reasonable as far as cost goes. If you're looking for a good old Irish Pub with great people, music and food Butch's is the place to be!

This is a fun little pub. It was decked to the nines for Christmas and had a great atmosphere! Great for a few bevvys and some appetizers.

Beautiful at Christmas!

This place was recommended by most of the people at the firm we are working at. The brunch was very good and the atmosphere was fun. HUGE Bloody Mary's!

Another stop on my remembrance tour

By SalfromIL |

By the time we got to Butch's, I understood that my memories from the 70's were not relevant anymore. But Butch's lived up to most of what I liked about it. Our bartender was friendly, traded stories with us about the history of the bar and took an active part in our conversation. It made for lots of laughs and we certainly enjoyed our time there. We just drank, so I can't testify about their food but I never went to Butch's to eat. Just party like it was 1979!

Superior bar food

By shari w |

Wandered in as hardly any place in Chicago is open for inside dining. Wow, we were lucky! Super clean and covid smart. Delightful and friendly. Great service. Super food. I had a Reuben and fries. Hubby had taco special. Way better than I could have imagined!

Great Find

By Simon M |

Called in on a very busy Friday night. Great call as on Friday's they serve clam chowder which was lovely. Also had a burger which was very nice complemented by a great choice of draft beers.

Great Brunch!

By Kevin F |

We had an awesome brunch today! Haven't been here in years, but the place still looks great and the Eggs Benedict and hash were excellent! So was the Bloody Mary! Hope to be back soon!

Super spot!

Stopped in for a few cocktails and an app while waiting for a friend. Strong drinks 1/2 price and the Ruben sliders were awesome. crystal my server outgoing and a lot of fun. Definitely a place I’ll visit again. Worth your time.

When we come to Chicago, Butch McGuires is our first stop! If you don't get the Rueben with Sweet Potato Fries and a Double Bloody Mary, your really missing something. Ask for Chipoltle Mayo with the fries. OMG! Trust me! You can Thank me later! One of my favorite places in the United States! Love it! Go! Quickly!

Easy meal

Decent selection available. Great atmosphere even though we were there to eat and not really drink. Lots of locals so that was a good sign. Large portions.

Just in for a quick drink - fun vibe, great special, nice people, both staff and other customers we talked to.

Division Street's major attraction

By Taylor B |

Butch McGuire's Tavern is the blueprint for a neighborhood bar, a popular gathering place where the bartenders are friendly, the stories are legendary, the food is good and the drinks are poured until 4 a.m. Since 1961, Butch's has been a mainstay on Division Street, a go-to destination for late-night partygoers and sports fans at any hour. Located at 20 West Division Street, it also happens to be situated in the middle of the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings in the spring and summer, which is how my wife and I discovered it. Love the brunch. Sit in the patio outside the front door and watch the people go by. We have our favorite order, nothing fancy, just good comfort food. Three scrambled eggs with roasted garlic rosemary potatoes, two sausage links, wheat toast and jam and a fruit cup. Traditional Eggs Benedict with two poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce with sides of roasted garlic rosemary potatoes and corned beef hash. Be sure to arrive early to get a good seat.

Fine selection of beer and wonderful Christmas decorations in December each year. A must see if you are in Chicago for the holidays, or even any other time of year.

First beer in Chicago here good atmosphere friendly staff. Went back in the evening for some food, simple but tasty and good value

Neat place!

By karin h |

We stopped here only because it was around the corner from our hotel. It was a really neat old Irish bar! We didn't eat there, but the food looked good. Lots of good beer, too. We went back the next afternoon for "just one more" before heading out of town.

Must see at Xmas!

By VanillaAce |

Great bar for drinks and hanging with friends. Christmas decorations are amazing. The “Christmas in your mouth” is a great shot to put you in the spirit.

lovely atmosphere

By grannye |

We ate here one evening when it was fairly quiet midweek. The food was plentiful and wholesome - the drinks and cost of food reasonable and the staff very helpful and friendly

Great for food and Sport!

By Sharon N |

This bar came with great recommendations and looked welcoming from the outside. It was very close to our hotel so was ideal. Food was great and the staff were friendly. We went back at least 3 times, for the quiz and to watch sport. Get there early if you want a seat.

Lovely established Irish bar

By 1879fulham |

A lively Irish bar/ restaurant particularly on a Saturday night. Seemed to be particularly popular with the millennials crowd. They served a great pint of Guinness which is good. Not necessarily somewhere I would rush back too but having said that the majority of people would enjoy the vibe and the craic.

A bit disappointed

By Allen21096 |

Every year we try to get to Butch McGuire's Tavern during the Christmas season with what used to be the kids, but has now turned in to the grandkids with the kids. We absolutely love the way that Butch McGuire's is decorated for Christmas. There are an unbelievable amount of lights and Christmas figures in a small amount of indoor space. No part of the ceiling is left undone. The Christmas decorations are in addition to the trains that circle the ceiling from the multiple hanging tracks. The day that we were there was really cold, so it was actually not too crowded. We had to wait as our group arrived, but we were seated quickly, once the last did arrive. Each of us ordered different items, from eggs Benedict to chili to burrito to chocolate chip pancakes. Our only complaint was that the service seemed to be very disjointed. Our server, Juan M., was not as attentive, efficient and personable as other servers we have had over the years.

Second generation of my family to love this place!

By Derek S |

A Chiacgo institution! My Dad came here in the 60s and 70s and always raved about it. I came for lunch on a Tuesday (understandably not their peak time...) and had a great burger and two Sam Adams beers. Attentive and efficient service, loved the Chicago sports memorabilia! A shame they were a bit short on merch, the men's red thermal looked really good.

A Chicago classic that's still keeping up.

By MichaelJW |

This place has been around for a long time (dad bartended here in the 60's). The fish and chips were very good, though I probably shouldn't have them since greasy food and I don't get along so well these days. Loved seeing PBR on tap. Atmosphere is very fun with a mix of sports fans, couples and business types. Was surprised when I didn't see the bartenders wearing the Butch McGuires ties but one of them said they get to take them off for the summer, but come October they'll break them out.

Fun, historic place with lots of memories

By Mimi B |

We decided to have lunch her because of our memories from when we were younger and partying downtown more often. We had quesadillas which were generous and VERY good. At lunchtime it is a quiet and historic atmosphere. Service was very good and prompt.

Excellent service, great food

By Allen21096 |

Every year, between Christmas Day and New Years, we try to meet at Butch McGuire's for brunch. We started this tradition about 1989 and have continued to now, though it is now not only my kids, it is my grandkids. Butch McGuire's is a great spot to come and drink, but don't overlook the fact that during the Christmas season, it is beautifully decorated and the kids will love it, not to mention the kid in you! We were seated once our full party was there and there were ten adults and two six year old grandkids and one four year old. When we were given our table, the kids took some time to walk around and check out the decorations. They even found at least one new one. Our server, Elizabeth, was personable, attentive and efficient. When we placed our drink order, we ordered for the three kids right away. Their order was two kids' pancakes - one with chocolate chips, and an order of kids' French toast. Elizabeth came back and took our orders when she brought our drinks. Some of the things that were ordered were eggs Benedict, chili, a Reuben sandwich, a half car bomb with a side of breakfast sausage, along with a couple of egg breakfasts. Elizabeth was nice enough to take a group picture before the food arrived. The price was reasonable and the gratuity was included due to the number of people. A great family tradition, see you next year - God willing and the creek don't rise!

Fantastic decorations

By AWHEMH |

Come to Chicago to visit my daughter and her husband. We go to Butch McGuire's to see the Christmas decorations. Drinks are good food is good and service was also up to par. All in all this is a great place to stop by during the Christmas holidays.

Good Beers and Service

By paulsA8804CH |

Many thanks Steve for a warm welcome and good chat with all washed down with a good few beers and a Jamo.....

Check the bill before paying.

By Augustiii |

Great atmosphere, great drinks, good food! When we asked for a bill, he brought over the little machine. When we asked for a paper receipt, it turns out we tipped $6. on a T-shirt we bought, and a paid $3. administration fee.

Way too crowded!

By Laura O |

I must be missing something, because I couldn't enjoy anything here as it was way, way too crowded (which I realize is a good thing for the bar, but we went on a Tuesday. I can't imagine what it's like on the weekend). And I would definitely call it a bar vs a restaurant. However - the decor was incredibly festive. The most holiday-tastic bar I have ever seen.

A gem!!!

By Lifechaotic |

Love this find! All decked out for Christmas, it’s so nice! Great atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. Can’t wait to go back. In the mood for a shot? Try Christmas in my mouth...lol. It was yummy.

Loved it!

By Mimsharrison |

We popped in for a few beers last week while visiting from the UK. We loved it! From the welcome at the door, the banter with the bar staff and the Christmas decorations...wow just wow! We just wish we had a chance to get back there whilst visiting Chicago. People, please go!

Fantastic Christmas ambiance

By Allen21096 |

It's hard to believe that a tavern would be a great place for kids, but during the Christmas season, Butch McGuire's Tavern decorates the interior, like few other places. I don't know how long it takes for them to decorate it, but when you walk in the Christmas theme is hanging from all of the ceilings. Santa, Mickey, the Minions, among others were all represented. Trains running above your head adds to the spirit. Kids love it and you can tell from the looks on their faces, just how fascinated they are. We came on a Saturday morning for brunch with a group of 12, including four kids - a 10 yr. old, two 3 yr. olds and an 18 month old. They had a great time. The adults ordered several eggs benedict, though there was a burrito, a pot roast skillet and a bowl of chili. The kids ordered pancakes, both with and without chocolate chips. Everything was tasty, nothing was leftover. The eggs benedict is excellent. Bloody Marys were the drink of the morning brunch. Our server, Charlotte E., was very helpful and efficient. The staff was accommodating, even getting us moved, so that we were all able to sit at one table. Whether you are an adult without kids, or an adult with kids, this is a great place to go for a Christmas tradition.

Tavern Culture

By Robert G |

Butch McGuire's Tavern is the place your parents first met and had a one-night-stand. This tavern has been open for more than 55 years and is very well known locally. It was featured as "Molly McGuire's" in the 80s movie "About Last Night". The founder, Butch, has since passed, but his son Bobby currently runs the joint. Stop by during the Christmas holidays to see the extravagant decorations. Near the Viagra Triangle and with a Late Hour License (closed at 4am or 5am), this is a singles bar so get your game going!

Great place for food and a beer.

By John W |

We popped in here on our way back from Lincoln park zoo - see separate review about that place which is well worth a visit - There was plenty of beers and served in pint glasses, something we noticed is not always the case in pubs in Chicago. As with most pubs you can start a tab and the bar staff are really friendly. We ordered a pizza, when in Chicago and all that. It was really tasty. There are a few TVs on the walls with NFL etc showing. Given the size of the place, and quite a few US citizens, the toilets are a bit of a surprise (as in very small) The atmosphere was friendly and people soon started to talk to us, something you don’t see very often back home. Overall, a nice place to have a few pints all be it was out of the way from our hotel/downtown.

Fun place to watch people

By LuvMex828 |

We enjoyed a few beers here and watched the variety of people coming and going. There is an outdoor area along the sidewalk that has seating so that you can see up and down the street. Service is good, the beer is nice and cold.

Bring the little ones for lunch.

Great holiday decorations, littles ones love. Kids menu also. A bit overpriced, but servers great and food choices great.

A Holiday Haven!

By kimmysue42 |

My friends and I love this place! Perfect bar for a stop while shopping during the holiday season! The decorations are amazing! If you aren’t in the spirit when you arrive you will be when you leave. You have to try the ‘Christmas in your Mouth’ shot! Good bar food appetizers- mini Rueben’s, cheese curds, tator tots, onion rings - greasy but good!

Great Atmosphere

By sweetm |

Had to stop in for some Irish food. The fish & chips was good, and so was the rueben. We also shared potato bacon soup which was creamy & delicious. The decor was all dressed for St Patricks day but looks like it is that way all year. We were seated right away and the service was good too.

Shelter From The Storm

By Adrian D |

My wife and I had been at the Chicago History Museum and were looking for somewhere to eat on our walk back to the hotel. There had been sleet and snow all day so we were also looking for somewhere to shelter from the storm. We decided to go here and we enjoyed our visit. I had nachos and I think my wife had a bowl of chips (fries if you're American). The food was good and the service was decent too. We'd definitely return.

Great Decorations!

Fun stop on our Chicago trip

By jenny433 |

I was in town with family and went here with my brother and our significant others. We went because of the Christmas decorations... which were SO fun!! The drinks were fun and I liked that there were holiday drinks on the menu. I wish there had been desserts but oh well. The waiter - Charlie - was so nice. He must have stayed and talked with us for an hour. He told us all about Chicago and was so friendly (and funny). I think he got in trouble a couple of times for chatting with us but he really made our night that night!

Neighborhood Irish bar

By wsmithhd |

This is a great Irish bar with a neighborhood feel. Had clam chowder which was good. Matthew our server was excellent and keep the drinks coming. Stop by for a pint

A institution

By Peter W |

Our landlady at our B and B told us we had to go there and as it was just around the corner from where we were staying - an opportunity not to be missed. Pity we didn't find it earlier in our visit - the best place in the Gold Coast area to drink and soak up the atmosphere.

Good bar

By BillyS002 |

Good bar food and friendly service. The ribs are exceptional and the fish and chips surprisingly good considering that the fish is flown in from the coast. A lively bar in a good location.

Good Tavern!

By BrianEH32766 |

What can be wrong with Guinness, Jameson and good pub food all in the same location. Not a dang thing. Always good service with the bartenders still wearing traditional shirts with ties. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Go here and have a pour of Guinness and a burger you won't be sorry.

Best Holiday Bar in Chicago!

By JPH007 |

I love this place. I've been several times but this is my first review. My GF and I were in Chicago for a wedding and she commented how she wished we were there a little later in November so that there would be more "christmassy" things to see or do. I hadn't told her that I already checked to see if Butch's had put up their christmas decorations... AND THEY HAD! So I surprised her by saying we had to go to this small bar for a quick drink, and he was completely blown away by their decorations. They go balls to the walls with it. You haven't experinced the holiday season in Chicago, until you've gone to Butch's to see the decorations and get a shot of "Christmas in your Mouth!"

Brunch AND nightlife!!

By Mackenzie B |

We went for a yummy brunch. Yummy it was! Their corn beef and hash is sooo good. Breakfast pizza is a must try, complete with hollandaise sauce. We had mimosas (of course) which are served in giant mugs. We went back for lunch to try their fish and chips and burgers. Their fish and chips were one of the best I've had. What was nice is both times we visited for meals, they weren't too busy, so the wait staff had time to pay attention and chat with us. The decor is amazing, I love all of the mugs, the flags, the crazy pictures. We had "breakfast shots" which were amazing. It's vacation, right?? The place was so awesome, they said we would love it at night. It was wild and a great time. We love Butch McGuires and we will always come back!!

What a place. All decorated for Christmas with trains, the heat miser, Snow Miser, and more. Greg the manager is very helpful. Wait staff Jenny is a real pro. Try the Irish Wontons. The Reuben was fantastic.
