Definite Thumbs Up

By DanaSmith8 |

After a day of walking around Philadelphia my group made reservations here. We waited for a little bit at the bar and got some drinks, we were seated about 15 minutes after our reservation time, which didn't bother us at all. We ordered the Pretzel Monkey Bread and the Oven Roasted Bone Marrow. The monkey bread was delicious and fluffy with a great crispy crust on the outside that was served with two dipping sauces (spicy beer mustard and cheddar cheese sauce) that were a great compliment to the bread. The bone marrow had a fantastic delicate texture and I could have eaten plate after plate of it and been one happy customer. For the main course the Grilled Korean Shortribs, Grilled Octopus Confit, and Smoked Wild Boar Ribs were ordered. I didn't try the boar ribs, but I was told that were pretty good and worth ordering again. The Korean short ribs had a delicious marinate/sauce (similar to one used for bulgogi), however, my complaint was that the shortribs had a lot of fat on them so there was not much meat to devour. The grilled octopus was nice and light. It was one grilled octopus tentacle served over a bed of cipollini onions and micro greens with smashed fingerlings and smoked paprika aioli. This dish was light and fresh and the smoked paprika aioli was a great additional flavor to the dish. I would definitely order the grilled octopus confit, monkey bread, and the oven roasted bone marrow again. While we were at the restaurant a group had preordered The Trough and as it was brought out, out came the cameras. The Trough (rotisserie chicken, assorted house made sausages, grilled skirt steak, rash of ribs, kabobs, house smoked bacon, bone in short ribs, house cut fries, and grilled pita served on a giant wood slab) is something I would order if I was with a bigger group, just for the novelty of it.

Soooooooo delicious!!

Went last night for dinner. My first time in Philly and was blown away by the food here!! We sat at the bar. Loved the bartender and followed his recommendation. The bone marrow was the best I’ve ever had! We had the royale burger which was in my top 5 burgers ever. Their special with Alaskan king crab, shrimp, clams and succotash over fingerling potatoes- hands down one of the most flavorful dishes I’ve ever had at any restaurant! To end the night we had a banana cream pie with BACON in the crust! YUMM!!! Will be back to philly- maybe just to eat here again!!

What a great surprise!!

I made reservations at this restaurant on the train on my way to Philadelphia. When we walked up we saw that the lights on the front of the building were flashing, in an uninviting way. Upon walking in though, the smell of smoked meats filled the room. Delicious! We were seated in a comfortable spot in the back of the restaurant. Our waitress talked us through the menu, and drink options. And OH MY! The brussel sprouts, the ribs, the vegan meatballs, the smoked Gouda mac and cheese, the jalapeno corn bread, the SKILLET NUTELLA COOKIE and ice cream.....You must visit!!! My husband and I tried an array of food and each one was delectable!! We left feeling super satisfied. My husband kept reminding me, "great find, excellent." We will come back FOR SURE!!

Well Deserving of the Name

By jenchan000 |

We ordered the pre fixe menu, which includes an entree called the "trough". It really was a trough of meat. I have to say that the sight of the pile of...meats...was a bit off-putting at first. However, the tender, well-seasoned skirt steak and rotisserie chicken made me change my mind. It wasn't "gourmet" food but, it was good, comfort food. I also really enjoyed the milk chocolate mousse, which was rich and light.

Fantastic Bacon

By Dan C |

Went here for dinner late on a Friday night. Decor is a rustic chic, warm environment. Food and drinks were great. The slab bacon is literally the best bacon I've ever tasted, it just melts in your mouth. Also had the steak, meatballs and cheese board (massive), all great.

Meat Meat Meat

For our parents’s birthday, we’ve reserved the Through for our family get-together. The Through is a huge wooden plate that covers everything from rotisserie chicken to sausages to ribs. Family had fun digging thru the meat. We also ordered the Tomahawk steak but it was a bit too red for our taste. The Smoked Gouda Mac’N’Cheese war a big hit with the kids. Delicious food with great friendly service.

Large Group Dinner

By firemarshalbill1 |

Had dinner here with a large group about 18 people. Very busy restaurant and very energetic. Menu was pretty good but i thought limited on the Meat side since it was called butcher block. Everyone was happy with their meal and the service was also very good. Large beer selection, they also had a full service bar. Small plate selections were unique with a pretzel monkey bread and jalapeno corn bread being the hits of those. Pricing was also reasonable definitely worth trying out. I had a the double hamburger which was very good

Great place

Italian meat balls were amazeballs, monkey bread was delish. Funky place has outdoor area and indoor. Can be quite loud but also means you can have some fun with colleagues... Boar Ribs were ribbalicious

Late dinner

By Andres72423 |

What an amazing place. We got there a bit later in the night but because we had reservations it was all good. The place was packed but there was a great vibe in the place. E decided against having a large meal so we went with the Charcuterie board and the ox tail linguini. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. The Charcuterie board was plentiful. All types of Italian cured meats along with a great selection of cheeses. You just can't go wrong this option. Secondly we had the ox tail with linguini and we could have eaten our portion plus another if it was served. The ox tail was full of rich flavor and the pasta was cooked perfectly. Without a doubt, we loved this place and highly recommended you try it.

Delicious food

We arrived in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon and before going to our apartment, we stopped for lunch. It was a recommendation of a friend and we were glad with that. The food was delicious and quickly served. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go back but I will definitely will on my next trip to Philly.

Excellent dinner!

By GlobeTrotting828973 |

Booked online on the day. The restaurant was busy but had a great atmosphere. We were seated upstairs. We started with well made margaritas. Knowing how large portions can be in the US we swerved the appetisers and went for mains. The baby back ribs with cornbread was delicious. I had the burger which was made with quality meat and served medium. Delicious! We had a little room so shared a skillet cookie with ice cream - I’m going to try to recreate that dessert!

Great Lunch Find

By Steven C |

Great Menu, heavy on "The Meats". Fantastic whiskey selection. We tried the special "Prime Rib Cheese Steak sandwich" To Die for, The Royale Burger was tasty as hell and though it is a double decker it wasn'r to crazy big - it was the star of the show, The Meatball SUb was super too. Can't wait to go back when I can try out some of the craft cocktails. They also have a nice beer list and a suitable wine selection.

Great food, great service

By moppa |

My husband and I had dinner one night last week. Every staff member we encountered was nicer than the first and very attentive. Well informed about the menu and drinks and seemed really happy to be working there (and happy to have you there dining). Food was way above your average restaurant. We had the pretzel monkey bread, seafood sausage, steak and choc cookie dessert. They were all delicious and I would highly recommend. It does have a younger crowd vibe, but as 50 year olds we didn't feel out of place or unwelcome. Seating is tight (like most center city restaurants). Will definitely return.

We loved it

By JeanneG_1 |

Our family of 3 visited the restaurant for my birthday, and we were very happy with the food, atmosphere, drinks, servers - well, everything. Even parking was literally next door, $12 flat rate - cheap for Rittenhouse square area. We were seated on the 2nd floor, next to a huge open window - felt like we were on a terrace but without the dust and crowds on the street. Generous selection of entrees and price ranges, 4 pages of bar fare - from wine and beer on tap to bourbon/gin/whiskey cocktails. Helpful servers, reasonable wait for the food to come. We loved it.

Whoa

By ShinyShoes777 |

We were a party of 11 so the server (don’t remember her name but she spoke some Polish and was really funny n awesome) recommended that we get the trough- an insane amount of food all on one, well, trough that everyone shares. It was kind of a food challenge. We got a bunch of sides, too. We had a lot of leftovers. The trough was $300 which isn’t expensive, but really didn’t have the best cuts of meat on it. I think everyone liked the burgers and the Korean short ribs best. We didn’t order a lot of alcohol, and with 20% tip, the tab was $70pp which was kind of expensive. But it was definitely an experience and a good time. -wouldn’t order the corn bread or carrots again -Mac n cheese and the Brussels sprouts were really good -really liked the Caesar salad, too

We have been enjoying an amazing Indian Summer in Vermont. Despite the almost summer-like weather here, which we did not really have this summer we ventured south to Philadelphia, where I attended college and graduate school, and lived and worked and have seen first-hand the restaurant renaissance. This is an aside, it was more like South Beach. So that being said, we, my wife and her best friend who we were staying with had an amazing lunch here and as in South Beach snagged a table for al fresco dining. The food, everything we ordered was excellent - in fact the cheese burger was probably one of the best I have ever had and we have really good ones in Vermont. Our starters hit the spot - the duck confit could have handled a tad more roasting but the short ribs - melt in your mouth. The fries - we shared two orders and a good selection of crafty beers, again coming from a state that boasts a large # of craft brewers. It was a great meal! Try it.

Worth the try.

By Melanie J |

The Butcher Bar is a must. Staff is friendly and attentive. The food, while a bit pricey, is well worth , and love the atmosphere. If you like smokey flavors, this is your place. Can't wait to go back to try something different.

This place is amazing!

By clessinny |

Went here for an unplanned dinner and sat at the bar. The staff were amazing and the food was unbelievable. Had the meatballs for an app. You need to try them!

Very noisy two floor dining

By Lsbtravel1 |

Loctade near Rittenhouse Square this new place has become really popular with students and millenials as well as neighbors. It is on two floors and not very much seating. Burgers and meat dishes are the best and for large groups they offer a huge platter filled with all kinds of foods for $250.00 that would easily feed a dozen

So great

By V6681IQnancyw |

We really enjoyed this place. Ambiance, service, food and drink was ALL GREAT. Highly recommend this place.

We found the meat!

By AHRESQ |

Had an excellent dinner at the Butcher Bar on July 4th. There is a lively bar area on the ground floor serving a nice selection of draft wines and other cocktails (a nice selection of bourbons to choose from). We were seated in a small/intimate upstairs dining room. The service was friendly and very professional. This place (as the name suggests) specializes in grilled meats. We started with the Bone Marrow and the Korean short ribs for the table, and both were excellent. We also ordered the wedge salad, which is huge (enough to feed 3-4 people) and delicious. For the entree, we ordered a T-bone steak medium rare. The steak was well seasoned and perfectly cooked to the ordered temperature. The steak was good - not great, and a bit pricey ($65) for the portion size and quality (it was not prime). This was a very good dinner/experience, and we would definitely go back, but we would skip the T-bone next time.

This is an amazing place… can’t miss this one. The octopus was phenomenal. Never thought that sun dried tomatoes would create such an amazing combination… well done!

A Birthday Brunch Celebration

By Kim W |

My daughter surprised me for my birthday with this brunch. We do not live in the city, so going into Philly is a treat. I would say the menu is limited. We chose the Top it Off for brunch. Great choice We started with Espresso Martinis, which were perfect. Next, we had the Potato Waffle Hash. For entrees we had the Pina Colada French Toast. It was dry and had pineapple and toasted coconut not much Pina colada flavor going on. It really needed the maple syrup. The Asparagus & Swiss Omlette was great. The highlight was the potatoes. The Monte Cristo was also very good. Great staff. Loved the unlimited Mimosa, Marguerite and Bloody Mary's.

Wonderful flavors.

By travelingcoinman |

Lots of interesting choices and everything was great. We had several dishes and shared. Sausage was great, octopus was tender and flavorful, the wild boar ribs were falling of the bone and the desserts were just a way to go over the top.

yummy cocktails

dropped in to escape the rain, had a glass of wine and another had a cocktail. service was friendly, bar was quiet on a saturday afternoon.

Great food and service

By GigiNYC |

The Butcher Bar was the start of my progressive dinner. I had the butternut squash salad. My date had the meatballs served in a mini cast iron skillet. The food was flavorful and well presented. The service was awesome. I would suggest reservations especially on a Saturday evening. Will be back for the entree and dessert.

Lots of good food

By Stephen C |

Went for dinner with my hungry student daughter. We liked the look of the appetizers so much that after sharing caesar salad, bone marrow and a huge platter of meat and cheese, we had no room for a main course! We will have to go back and start a bit more slowly.

Great service, great food, fun atmosphere

By Erik S |

I visited during a business trip and was pleasantly surprised. It gets a bit busy, so be sure you make a reservation. The prices are a little on the higher end of the scale, but the flavor and quality make it worth it. The steak was done perfectly, the roasted vegetables were delicious, the meatballs were flavorful, and don't forget the slab of bacon! Well worth going.

So good!!

By Veronica R |

The trough is the way to go! It was so much food and everything on it is amazing!! A party of 8 or larger can share it and still not eat all of the food. Their cocktails were mixed really well too and super tasty.

Saturday night for a quick

By Phillyshoegal |

Saturday night for a quick meal was unplanned but I work in the area and always heard good things and so while waiting for a show at Helium we popped in. We arrived at 6pm and did not have a reservation so the bar areas was offered to us of which they had space in the front of the restaurant which we accepted; therefore you should make reservations if you plan to go. The menu has something for everyone however I heard about thief burgers so we went in that direction. I did not review the drink menu I asked our server to suggest a drink and when I told him I would drink anything with clean liquor he selected a light cocktail which was pretty fitting but I never asked him the name of the drink; sorry about that missing detail. As for dinner we selected the royale (burger-sorry if it was mispelled) and the short ribs. The burger dish came with fries and ribs came with cabbage. For the two meals and two drinks, second one being tequila neat the total was just at $60 before a tip. We were in and out within one hour. I would go again. It is worth a visit! Conveniently located for parking as there are several garages..

The service at this restaurant is absolutely incredible

By Amanda |

When they tell you the ribs are fall off the bone, they are not joking around. The flavor combinations this restaurant develops are absolutely delicious. The variety of whiskey available to the patron is good. While the idea of the trough brought us to this restaurant, we ended up having a dinner for her to do some last-minute cancellations with the rest of our party, and are so happy we tried this on our own. Even the unique ice cream flavor combinations in the sampler have me craving a second trip to this restaurant. On top of the Great food and atmosphere (despite limited space between tables to get in or out of your seat), The service was incredible - I've never had such attentive waitstaff before.

Give this a miss.....

By travelofoodies |

Overly prices drinks and food. Nothing to write about either since they were just so-so. Food is definitely priced high compared to.other neighborhood is places. It's a little.hype, so maybe give it a try once and that's about it, don't think will go back again

Relax and unwind

By ripchix |

Well this was a nice break from the heat. Service was a little off though it wasn’t busy. My cocktail, up in smoke, was tasty, cheese curds excellent and my steak cooked perfectly! Grandson had the Italian meatballs. He was only able to eat two out of the five so I helped out;). Carrot cake for dessert could have used more frosting but was moist and flavorful.

Coworkers Lunch

By Domsmommom |

I went to lunch today with 2 of my coworkers and we decided to try Butcher Bar. When we walked in, the bar is in the front of the restaurant and we were promptly greeted by the bartender. The hostess returned quickly after seating a party ahead of us. We did not have a reservation, but the hostess was able to seat the 3 of us right away. We walked past an open kitchen and up a short flight of marble steps to one of the seating areas. The ambiance is nice. The decor is mostly black and white with a splash of red thrown in, exposed brick walls, side window lighting, and meat hooks on a rail near the ceiling; the meat hooks tie in the butcher/bar theme. I think the brick walls amplify sound because there were about 15-20 people in our dining area, but it was very loud with all of the different conversations going. My group had to say almost everything twice so we could hear each other. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. We ordered the BLT sandwich, the meatball sandwich, and the lamb meatball gyro. The food was brought out after a short wait. Everything was delicious. We shared an order of fries because sandwiches do not include sides. The menu contains largely meat items, so vegetarians and salad eaters may not like the menu. I would come again. The restaurant is great for employee lunches, dinners with friends, or just hanging out at the bar; they have a large drink menu.

Tasty meal in an Eclectic Atmosphere

By guess2 |

We had some really good bourbon cocktails and split the grilled octopus and Royale with Cheese. The latter was really good, leaving us wishing we had ordered our own sandwiches. Atmosphere was neat. Sat on one of the patios. The server must have been new at the job Not very attentive but didn't ruin the meal.

Poor service mediocre food

By Frank G |

Short pour cocktails. Meatball appetizers very good. Monkey bread cold not warm. Cauliflower wad very good. Ribeye at $55 was fatty and gristle mostly inedible. Complaints about steak resulted in free dessert.

Mixed review

By Nancy G |

We came here for lunch because I heard the burger was the best in time. We started with sharing a Caesar salad. They split the salad onto two plates prior to bringing it out, which was very nice of them. The salad was delicious and will be what I order for my lunch next time in. It was a bargain at $11.00 . I ordered the burger with cheese (the Royal with cheese to be exact). It was very very good. My husband ordered the cheese steak. He said it was too dry and a little too much bread (or too little meat & veggies). Our server Jenna was very pleasant.

Limited Lunch Menu But Still A Tasty Lunch

By Tara Heagele |

Hubby and I stopped here for a quick lunch before a visit to the Mutter Museum (it’s right around the corner). We arrived before noon and were asked if we made reservations. I said, “no, is that bad?” And the hostess answered by raising an eye brow. In any event, when we got there, the restaurant was nearly empty. We were seated completely alone on the second floor dining area. However, as we ate, the restaurant filled. So perhaps a reservation is a good thing? The lunch menu is only a page long. We shared the confit duck wings, which fell off the bone when we picked them up. I had a BLT and hubby had the royal burger. Both were tasty and I would try the restaurant again for dinner next time.

BEST Date Night!

By npicot01 |

My husband and I went here for date night with a couple of friends in December. We sat at a really cool table upstairs and had a very attentive waiter. He made sure we had enough drinks all night and was very quick. The food was AMAZING! We got the Bacon (YUM!) and a couple of other appetizers- the cheese board was so yummy too! I just got the mac and cheese and meatballs for dinner because I was STUFFED. The mac and cheese was the best I've ever had! My husband and friends loved their food! I feel like anything you get here won't be a disappointment! I highly suggest checking this place out. good food and great drinks! you won't regret it!

First Timer

By Lisa MU |

Last Thursday and coworker and I were heading to a concert but we wanted to have dinner first. So I search for places on line and found the Butcher Bar. Me and my coworker were very pleased with the food we order and are excited to go back again. The only issue was the flies in the outside garden, which can be expected because it is the summer time but that didn't stop us from eating. Again the food is fantastic!

Interestingly good

By Lou W. |

Kind of small yet Ok. We sat inside at a table for four. Server was personable, knew the menu giving us time to review the menu over drinks. The diining area was high energy and before we knew we were shouting across the table to be heard. Maybe some rugs hung on that brick wall would help.. Then the room went quiet as the staff transported "The Trough." You'll need to see it to believe the portions, variety and oh the aromas... Italian meatballs, and sausage were outstanding appetisers we all shared. That red sauce qualifies as excellent red gravy. Mamgia! A great wedge salad, was just rite for 4 to share. It was crisp and well dressed. The aged 16 oz Steaks were top shelf. The ladies shared one and the kitchen sent one steak out pre sliced - well played. Try it, you"ll like it.

Great addition to the neighborhood!

By tlh592016 |

A friend recommended this fairly new restaurant to us on Saturday so we decided to check it out for Sunday Brunch and we were happy we did. The Braised Brisket Omelet was the winner. Sounds decadent but we split it so we didn't feel too guilty! They also have a nice selection of beer and wine on draft. Our favorite part though was the brand new outdoor patio in the rear of the restaurant. Although the bar wasn't open because they were short staffed that morning, we were able to take our drinks outside and enjoy the fresh air, while watching a little baseball. The patio will certainly be a huge hit this summer and fall. We are looking forward to going back to try the lunch and dinner menus.

Many hits, one miss

By Paul S |

Four of us dined at Butcher Bar recently and we have an enjoyable evening. Being sharers, we sampled the chicken skins, charcuterie plate chicken liver mousse and the Game Hen with delight. The wild boar ribs was the single miss of the evening. What could have been presented as a signature dish with the individual flavor of the wild boar was masked by an overabundance of barbecue sauce.

Great food, great cocktails

By i.Bro |

The cocktails were delicious and a solid beer list. They have a meat forward menu with mostly small plate shareables, but everything was very good to great. I highly recommend the wild boar ribs, beef jerky, and Korean short ribs. Would definitely be happy to return.

Oh the cookie!

By Stephanie |

A few friends heard about this place and recommended trying it out. Reservations were made and they were able to seat us before our reservation. The staff was friendly and welcoming; knowing everything about the menu and willing to answer any questions. The food was typically small plate style with some entree options too. Nearly everything we ordered was consumed in seconds. The food was fantastic, especially the skillet cookie stuffed with nutella with a scoop of ice cream. Well worth every dollar!

Excellent Meat Centric gastro pub

By danr165 |

Butcher Bar Features a centrally located open kitchen that you walk past to be seated. The kitchen is focused around a meat centric menu, featuring beautifully in house aged stakes and handmade sausages, all grilled on an open flame. The menu is only one page but includes a nice verity that should satisfy all expect for maybe the vegan in the bunch. Nice industrial vibe inside the restaurant and great food and cocktails. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive made this a great dinning experience.

Friday night dinner

By Mary K |

Made reservations for dinner on Friday the 8th of December. Restaurant was busy. Ambiance was nice. Ry was our waiter and he took good care of us. We enjoyed: German Brat, the Italian Meatballs, cheese tray, Brussel sprouts/cauliflower. very good meal- maybe too much food b/c we didn't have room for dessert.

OUTSTANDING CULINARY EXPERIENCE!!!!!!

By Trek62764649187 |

First time diner at restaurant for celebratory wedding feast. Checked online, saw the photos but was skeptical, afraid. OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Butcher Bar is TRULY everything and more. The pics do not do their food justice. This review cannot describe how SAVORY, TASTY, YUMMY, DELICIOUS AND SATISFYING THEIR FOOD WAS. We had the full menu (I guess) with the Bone Marrow, Fried Chicken, BBQ Pork Belly, Sliders, Steak with Hollandaise, Truffle Fries, THOSE FANTASTIC SCRUMPTIOUS CAULIFOWER CLUSTERS, the CREAMY, THICK BUTTERY MASHED POTATOES!!!!!! The STICKY, FINGER LICKING TANGY WINGS, and the CRISPY YET TENDER LAMBCHOPS......it was ALL GLORIOUS. I felt like I was on Mount Olympus eating ambrosia, the food of the gods. It was just perfect. Nothing was too hot, too sweet, too salty, the food was hot and flavorful and served in a timely fashion. I was so stuffed, I could not eat the dessert, not even a spoonful. And the provided huge sturdy take out bowls for everyone and there was plenty to share and have for later. I was so busy eating, never made it to inspect the bathrooms, LOL. Ladies usually do that. If I have one criticism, its that one of my dinner companions was not happy with her cocktails. She ordered 3 different ones but was unhappy with them all. However some of us just had margaritas which were potent and enjoyable for us. So....nobody is perfect. But Butcher Bar was damn near!!!!!! We ALL left with smiles and thanked the cooks as we departed. I definitely plan to return.

Just Didn't Do It For Me

By Kenyon1972 |

There is a lot to like about Butcher Bar, but it did not make me want to come back. The service was good, but the waitress seemed a little put off by our small order. We really liked the roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts, which could have used a little more balsamic. The lamb meatballs were superb. The cornbread was fabulous, like a dessert. The weisswurst left a salty after taste, so that was the only food disappointment. The limited menu and the cramped seating are drawbacks.

Enjoyable dinner

By slp2003 |

Enjoyed dinner here on a Saturday night. Service was pretty quick and quite friendly. Get a spot on the covered patio in the back if you can - the rest of the restaurant island too loud to hold a conversation. This is the place to go if you are a meat eater! However they have a few meatless dishes. Burger and cornbread were favorites.

From good to horrible in 15 mins flat!

By Jeffrey M |

It was an experience that start off amazing and quickly became an aggregating night. The first 3 plates were great, the bread, bacon, and sloppy Joe fries. Everything else was a miss, super dry meatballs, flavorless chicken wings, and a so so wild boar ribs. I could have lived with the food but the service was even worse. I would have to wave down my waitress every single time as she seems to forget what tables she has. Getting a drink was literally impossible so I took my business to another bar near by. A disappointment for sure!

Lunch meeting

By Nathan D |

Stopped by with five colleagues for a lunch meeting. I had made reservations and it was a good thing for this larger group. There were plenty of smaller tables open though when we arrived (12:30). We all had one of the sandwiches which were all pretty good - except that they were all pretty greasy. The wait staff was very polite and timely. I'd love to swing back for a beer as it looked like they had a nice list. I'd be willing to give lunch one more shot, but it's definitely some heavier fare (even the lighter sandwiches). Cool ambiance here and everyone looked like they were having a good time. One minor comment - we got the one larger table for our group and it only had short barstools. When sitting down for an hour-long lunch, it would be been nice to have a chair!

Dont get the bacon slab!

By mdgipsy |

Went here for an early dinner. Seated quickly, hostess and server very friendly. Great beer selection with 2 fine stouts, yum! We opted for small plates. The pretzel monkey bread was great, and came with cheese and a spicy brown mustard with heavy horseradish. We also shared the sloppy joe pountine which was over fries and was quite tasty. What I wouldn't recommend is the slab of bacon. It is indeed a slab which you need to cut up. Though the sauce was quite good, it was extremely fatty and chewy, to the extent that in the first bite my son starting choking and gagging on it. The server witnessed this, took away the napkin and dish, but didn't remove it from the bill which was disappointing. However, I would go back again and try other dishes.

If you have a large group, you must try "The Trough"

By deltaflierdave |

The Trough is epic. If you have a large group, it is a MUST. About 20 pounds (I guesstimate) of food for $300. Steak, ribs, double cheeseburgers, half chickens, sausages, fries, lemons (???)... We had 10 people, and we still ended up with 4 takeout boxes full.

They Live Up To Their Name

By mikea168 |

Everything was GREAT! Food, drinks and desert. Our meals were cooked perfectly and served promptly. Make sure you don’t forget the skillet chocolate chip cookie for desert. Warm, topped with healthy scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Death Row Meal Worthy!!!!

By NVAGuy |

My wife and I were in town and decided to give it a try. Our server Sarah was amazing. She knew the menu and drink pairings well. We started with the Chicken Chicharron and monkey bread. Yum. Very good. Main courses were Greek Meatballs and Wild Boar ribs. The meatballs were very tasty and respectable. But the ribs were "slap yo' mama" good. We loved it. The jalapeño corn bread with honey was like desert. Great atmosphere, amazing food and Sarah was as good of a server as you can get. Can't wait to go back.

Everything is so good

By tabibit |

We had a large group, and I could get to taste a lot of different dishes - jalapeño cornbread, salad, meatballs, sausage, strip steak, Cornish hen. Food was excellent. Very friendly and competent staff. The restaurant can cater to various occasions - solo, couples, families, etc. Nice atmosphere- would love to return soon.

A Memorable Meal

By pearlmiriam |

What a great place. We had a meal of assorted appetizers which we shared. All were enormous and delicious. Started with the largest wedge salad we ever had. Then marrow bones. We had the roasted califlower and brussels sprouts. Grilled Korean short ribs and weisswurst sausage. Everything was excellent. A joyful meal

Can’t wait to go back for more

By danielleanglim |

Met a friend here to catch up and we both can’t wait to go back. The service was amazing. Our server was helpful with recommendations on both food and drinks. The atmosphere is laid back and fun. They have a great outside bar too. The food was amazing. We split meatballs pretzel bread and the Mac n cheese. Each one that came out was better then the previous. This will definitely be a go to for me from now on.

Good Food

By 7Linda67 |

Great beer menu. Good rustic food. Not a good place if you're trying to watch your weight!! Lots of tempting choices. I had a burger which was very good. One of my friends had the grilled octopus and said it was really good as well. My husband had the hen which was dry but good. A lot of good appetizer choices. We sat outdoors on the patio and it was really comfortable.it started to sprinkle and they closed the roof. Service was great. Very attentive and got everything right the first time.

A welcome addition to Philadelphia's restaurant scene in Center City

By paddler50S16 |

Butcher Bar has recently opened and in a very short time has found its footing. The staff preformed as if they had been in place for months. Everything was accurately described without unwanted detail. The kitchen made no mis-steps. The space has been renovated to be clean and open, well suited for large parties and for couples, too. The fire roasted peach salad with burrata was smart and seasonal. The boar ribs were smoky perfection, the well-seasoned meat falling off the bone The cheesy cornbread was a lovely accompaniment. Our only beef, pardon the expression, was that since there can be large parties, the noise level can be a bit high, but everyone was having a good time and that counts for a lot. The first visit will be one of many.

Go on Sundays!

By Maria P |

A friend recommended me Butcher Bar, telling me it was good but I have o be honest it was beyond amazing. 100% recommended, amazing food and great environment. If you can go on Sunday’s, they serve the prime rib and trust me it’s worth it (if you don’t eat to much, share it).

Meaty

Fun cocktails and tasty charcuterie board. Good service. Had a skillet Nutella cookie for dessert, amazing. Small menu, not for vegetarians.

Slick and Meaty Experience

By TommyBoy94 |

This is one slick experience. The room is a joy, fronted by the butcher block bar surrounded by tiles and light wood flooring. Tables are toward the back where a white brick and wood floor motif is predominant. Service is great and the bar is rich with craft beers, whiskey, bourbons and all other manner of booze. The crowd is well-heeled and well-dressed, (but not oppressively over the top) and are mostly in their 20s and 30s They have obviously dined in fine surroundings before but the place is anything but stuffy. Service is warm and efficient. Take out is not only available, but seems very much a part of the overall business. While the vegetables are really good, the highlight here is the butcher theme of terrific meats prepared with ingenuity. For example, I had a cheese steak that was anything but your typical cheese steak: Great sliced rib-eye steak meat, with a truffled provolone, onions and perfect sliced sweet peppers. Peaking to other tables, the kitchen does quite a job with caramelized onions, smoked meats applewood smoked bacon, potatoes etc. The breads are terrific as sides or with sandwiches, as must be the case with this kind of faire. Presentation of all dishes is expertly done. Appetizers, sandwiches and entrees are all available. I must return.

Best steak this year.

By Travel Critic |

Two things that are in decline in American Society is a talented mixologist and a chef that can prepare a proper steak. The Butcher Bar had both. Stopped in for lunch Saturday and the best steak of this year. Cooked perfectly, thanks! Steve the talented bartender served perfectly mixed drinks for the wife and a proper scotch pour for me. Great bar for serious scotch drikers, pricey as all thing Philly are but they have the stuff you want.

Awesome vibe

By Natalie C |

Great vibe to this meat lovers paradise. My boyfriend had the NY strip which loved. I had the korean short ribs, an entire piece which was all fat which I didn't love (great flavor, but not a whole piece of fat when they only give you five). Great dessert too! If you have a huge group, get the Trough, which is just pounds upon pounds of meet and fries for $300, so come hungry.

First impression was not realized

I had never been to this restaurant before, but it came up as available for a party of 5 on a Thursday night, outdoor seating on Open Table. The restaurant is fun and cool with a funky, bohemian vibe when you walk in. The restaurant has several levels and dining rooms, many are outside with picnic type bench seating and other smaller tables throughout. Our server greeted us promptly and showed us the QR code to download the menu and drinks. This place specialized in whiskey and bourbon with a large selection of beers. The food selection emphasized meat dishes, with options for fish lovers. The drinks overall were good but small. However the food was really disappointing. We ordered the monkey bread app to share and it was quite small and was just a big soft pretzel with mustard and cheese. I ordered the short ribs for dinner and they were mostly bone and fat and there was nothing outstanding about them. I left the restaurant still hungry. My friends didn't really comment about their food and no one seemed overly happy with their meals. We ordered 3 desserts to share (only 2 showed up) and both were pretty terrible. The key lime tart and cooked dessert were both disappointing. For $100/person you would have thought it would have been an extraordinary dinner. It wasn't. Our waiter seemed to disappear from time to time and service was slow. I can't recommend this restaurant sorry.

A fun time with lots of appealing options

By Daniel R |

The Octopus- I loved, worth 5 stars. Also got the cheese pretzel bread and the bone marrow. They were good but not as good as the octopus. The service was great. I was late for a reservation and they were very kind about it. I also want to point out I have never had bone marrow so maybe it was 5 star bone marrow. I also want to point out a lot of things on this menu looked good. The mocktail of the month was amazing.

More Than Just Butchery

By CincoSuzie |

So, whenever there are interesting things in a menu I make a pig of myself. I admit it. I go for my standby comparison items, and then I go for it. So here goes: Caesar salad - interesting presentation, croutons were hot molten pillows, the romaine was not torn, a bit of crisped pancetta, shaved parm, and unremarkable dressing that reminded me of a good bottled variety. B- Bone Marrow - a big marrow bone like you would give your dog, split in half, roasted, with a crusty top, and served with some crusty bread rounds. Pure fatty goodness. Sooo good. Sooo different. Get over the ewwww factor. A Boudin - What you would expect. B+ Cheese Board - What you would expect. B Grits - Oh baby - Cheesy goodness. Need I say more? A+ American Meatballs - Unremarkable. They reminded me of a mashed up Thanksgiving dinner plate: turkey, potatoes, etc. C+ Jalapeño Cornbread - This one was a surprise. I loved it. It wasn't even the least bit spicy. The jalapeño tasted like a little bit of green pepper in the cornbread, and there was alight maple syrup dressing over it. This was one of my favorites of the night. A+ I'm not a big drinker, but they have a full bar, too.

Tasteless, dry

By Dawn S |

We were excited to try this place. The atmosphere and ambience were great with open- air seating areas and great staff. Prices were reasonable and portion size was reasonable as well. The cauliflower and brussels were very tasty and monkey bread was good as well. The homemade beef jerky, although good in flavor, was incredibly tough and far too salty. The truffle sausage came without kraut, sauce, bun, or truffle (no truffle notes in the sausage could be detected). It was also very dry. My co-workers sausage was also bun-less and dry but had kraut and sauce with it. Street parking, however, was easy to find. We will not be back and I would not recommend this restaurant.

Small Menu- Big Flavors

By MHart |

After a day of museums, my daughter and I needed a bite and found this gem. With no reservations they seated us on the patio area which was covered and heated. Every patron had their jacket off and looked comfortable. Limited menu choices but the fare looked interesting... Ordered a drink from a full service bar in the area and a cheese plate to get us started. Solid choices on the plate- we found the truffle oil dip outstanding. My daughter stepped out of her comfort zone and ordered a bison burger (medium) and I got a strip steak med rare. Her bison was cooked perfectly, very juicy and had a great Boursin cheese on top. Very good! My strip was cooked to perfection and was a nice cut of meat served with some grilled vegetables. Dessert was their signature chocolate chip cookie served in a mini cast iron skillet with Moroccan ice cream on top. Yes it’s as good as it sounds! Annie gave us excellent service and guided us in our selection. Would definitely go back anytime

Great Food - Atmosphere is Lacking

By Damien D |

To be fair I was pointed here by a younger colleague. The food was fantastic, but the atmosphere left much to be desired. It's a loud bar with a soundtrack that could be titled, "The Worst of the Eighties, with an Occasional Classic". I'm sure that if I were fifteen years younger I would find it amazing, but for a guy in his forties, it just wasn't my vibe. That said, get the chicken wings and the roasted cauliflower and brussels - to die for.

Fun with the girls

By Andrea S |

Overcrowded and if you make reservations through OpenTable you only have a 1.5 hr time limit on your table. Really, a time limit. This place is overrated. Snarky wait staff. Food mehhh. Not sure what the hype is all about.

Dinner at Butcher Bar

By Tena I |

Our server, Mary, was awesome!! The food was very, very good - appetizers/small plates, entrees, and desserts...all of it.

Unique place to Eat

By saa112 |

The food was different. The buffalo chicken meatball was very good. So was the cauliflower and broccoli. Salad was good. Mac and cheese was not as tasty. Might be because they use Gouda in it. It was a pleasant experience. The wait was longer than expected. Only issue is if you mobility issues this place has challenges. Seating was mostly on the second and third floors. There was outdoor seating and bar space.

The food was average and service okay.

By Looness33 |

Neat place with a cute patio in the back. Felt rushed but also unattended. The food was in general average. They definitely rush the service so they can turnover the tables quickly.

Brunch Trough

By pookala |

Okey doke. Here's the deal, if you've got a party of at least 6 you can order the Brunch Trough, which is basically a huge amount of food served on a long (3 ft?) wooden board. You'll get grilled skirt steak, frittata with spinach, cheese, onions, potato waffles, cast iron pancakes, buttermilk biscuits, bacon, breakfast sausage, cheeseburgers, glazed doughnuts and in our case, a few mini meatball sandwiches on brioche buns. It's a lot of food. And it's impressive to see. Bros will love it. Lots and lots of carbs and meat. But it's $175 (with reservations required). Is that a great deal?Especially for 6 people? We were a pary of 9 & we took home 5 large containers of food. 1 1/2 of those containers were just biscuits. It just didn't seem to be a very good value to me. So here's the other important issue, food: the pancakes were hard, the frittata was rubbery, lots of gristle on the steak. Mushroom gravy was gloppy. The burgers were very good as was the bacon. Biscuits & donuts were so-so. Two other problems, hostess never looked up from her phone when I walked in (hello!?) and condensation from the A/C system dripped on me throughout the meal. Stick to the burgers. And be advised there are steps leading to the dining areas. I want to like this place more.

Really good

By Chris X |

To start with this is not a good place for 5 and 6 year olds, but they don't claim to be. Great place for non family. Food is really good. Manhattans very good. Service amazing. Best choices, mac and cheese, brussel sprouts and cauliflower, American meatballs. Bad option is the pasta with broccoli, boar ribs, and rib eye is so so.

Great Food/Great Atmosphere

By Steven O |

Went here for dinner before a show at the First Unitarian and couldn't be happier with our choice. The Royale with cheese had an amazing taste and char and the fries were very good. Atmosphere outside was very nice and staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Busy but worth the wait

By BethP260 |

Went to brunch and just got lucky to squeeze in after someone else canceled. You need a reservation because the place is packed, but that is for a reason. The food was amazing and so were the drinks. The atmosphere is also very quaint. I hope to go again next chance I have!

Amazing spot!

By briannamoira88 |

Delicious! I went here with my brother and a friend on a Friday night. We did not have reservations, but we were lucky enough to be able to get a spot at the back patio bar. Would definitely recommend making reservations though, especially on a Friday or Saturday night because it was busy! Food was great - had the garlic bread, the black truffle boudin blanc sausage with German potato salad and the skillet cookie for dessert. So good! Definitely would go back next time I'm in Philly.

Awesome Meat and Cheese!

By Michael S |

We found this spot last minute and were able to enjoy a bar seat near the street. The service was fast and friendly, the drinks were good, and the food i didnt want to stop eating. I've already recommended it two times during the course of the weekend. Its also in a good location with many more options for those bar hoppers out there.

Quality meat, flavorful dishes

By Nathalie K |

Charming decor, inviting open kitchen. Ordered the wild boar rib that was absolutely delicious; melts like butter with a warming sweet cornbread on the side. Ordered the strip steak as well; quality meat, deliciously seasoned, cooked to perfection. The poutine was ok, tastes good, but I personally prefer a classic poutine to this revisited version. Ended on a sweet note, the peanut butter cheesecake, recommended by our lovely and very knowledgeable waitress Sam; absolute heaven, “fluffier than the easter bunny”. Highly recommended. Will definitely come back. Make sure to reserve a table.

Very nice spot for lunch; a great burger or sandwich in a little nicer setting

By 967ModernArt |

I'm always up for trying a new burger and the BB Royale just won an award, so, that's what I had. The Royale was a great burger. However, it was not better than say the Smoke Shack burger at Shake Shake. But at BB you get a better (non-fast food) experience. The restaurant was new, shiny, and more importantly, clean. The room in back was bright and airy (although the tables were too small for a business lunch with clients imho). There was an outdoor space, but we did not see it. Service was solid (got my burger just as fast as at SS). The fries were shoestring, very good (much better than SS, but that's not a high bar). The drinks looked good, but I didn't indulge. The Coke had very little carbonation (some people like that; I do not). BB has homemade specialties, but we did not try them. BB is definitely worth a try.

Tried to eat everything

By Karan R |

Meet friends at the Burcher Bar for dinner and drinks. The staff was attentive and pleasant, we started off our meal with some apps, roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts and grilled Korean shortribs. Delicious! I had the smoked wild boar ribs and the jalapeno cornbread with maple syrup and ginger. Love, love, love the cornbread. I can't wait to go back again.

Great food, great service.

By Heather W |

Tried this place for the first time this past weekend because my husband wanted to check it out. I wasn't 100% on board, but in marriage, you compromise! This was a late lunch/early dinner due to afternoon activities. Only real turn-off was the specific hours of service, with a gap. Fortunately, the doors are open during the service gaps, and there were open spots around the perimeter of the bar to allow us to sit and wait to be formally seated. They had football on, so that certainly helped pass the time nicely. We were brought upstairs to our table, and it was a nice cozy spot. Our server, Karen, was super friendly and knew her stuff. We were pretty hungry, so we started with the cauliflower/brussel sprouts, slab of bacon, and bone marrow apps. I must say: the cauliflower/brussel sprouts dish was divine - I could have eaten the entire thing myself. Slab of bacon? Yes please! And the bone marrow was delish - the kids even loved it (they loved all the apps as a matter of fact). My husband and I went for the wild boar ribs: so tender. So good. And they come with a jalapeno cornbread that is covered in maple syrup -- we ordered extra to-go because it was just that good. My son had a steak that came with roasted veggies. He also had a side of fries that came with a spiced ketchup: so.good. He ate more than I thought a seven year old could, so he must've liked it! My daughter ordered the sloppy joe - which is actually sloppy joe cheese fries, and I certainly had more than a few of those. Yum. I tried everyone's food (because I'm Mom, and Moms can do that) and there were no disappointments on any plates. I was too stuffed to venture into their dessert menu. We still managed to walk away with enough leftovers for dinner the following day. They also boasted some "famous" cocktails, which I will try next time as well.

Solid dinner choice in the Rittenhouse Square area

By Tuhughes |

It was quite warm, so we ate on the lighter side with a starter and a side each rather than a full meal. My Italian Meatballs were good sized and tasty, but could have been a touch more tender. The roasted spring beets as a side were excellent, but the sautéed greens were a touch bitter for my personal taste. I didn't try my brother's Weisswurst, but he polished it off happily, so I assume it was fine as well. Overall a good meal, and with a god beer list and friendly service to boot.

Mediocre service on a Sunday night

By worktotravel14 |

When the server takes 10 minutes to greet your table, you know it is going to be a rough night. This was what happened on my second visit to the butcher bar. When he arrived, we were ready for drinks. He said "not yet" and did not come back for another 10 minutes. The tables under his service were all at different point in a meal, which should have made it easier to handle. It told us he just couldn't handle it. It took me until mid meal to order a drink. My husband said his ny strip was tough and overcooked. My burger was raw instead of medium as was another family members. The Italian meatballs were fantastic and the Korean ribs heavenly. I would think twice before coming back. This was a Sunday evening. It wasn't particularly busy. It should not have been so hard. The server boasted about being meticulous. I could not disagree more.

Everything is awesome - will definitely be back!

By William S |

Went here with my son and my brother on a football weekend in Philly. We started off with a couple of beers from a wide range of choices on the craft beer menu. We shared a smorgasbord of Pretzel Monkey Bread, Korean BBQ Ribs, Sloppy Joe Poutine, Italian Meatballs, Weisswurst Sausage, Smoked Wild Boar Ribs, and the Peanut Butter Bacon Bison Burger. Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious! Serving sizes were generous and perfect for sharing. The ribs were falling off the bone tender. We topped it all off with a couple of Cast Iron Chocolate Chip cookies for dessert! The service was excellent and the atmosphere was vibrant. A great time was had by all!

Nice Spot

By pookala |

Stopped in for lunch with friends, liked the casual vibe and our server who was efficient & accommodating. Food needed some work though, a salad was watery (hey it's important to dry those lettuce leaves!) and the burger was mushy. BLT was excellent though so I'll give it another chance.

Food and Service are amazing!!!

By Nellzon9 |

Came here one night on a whim and it was so amazing! We had two orders of the pretzel monkey bread and there were only 3 of us. We also had the slab of bacon, wedge salad, garlic bread, and the royal with cheese. The drinks we had hit the spot and were a nice twist off of traditional offerings. We will return because when a burger melts in your mouth (literally, no chewing required it's that delicious) you cannot forget it and you miss it.

Worth the stop

By kentgrad |

Great food. We sat upstairs and had a great night. The price is a bit high but the food is excellent quality. The service was good and timely.

Mix and Match

By JWDphilly |

Looking for something light and tasty. 3 of us shared the Pretzel Monkey Bread (great) the sausages 4 choices, went with Scallop, Lobster & Shrimp sausage (excellent), meatballs also 4 choices, went with Italian and to start off we had the Butcher Board along with some specialty coctails. Maybe we had more than one.
