TERRIFIC DINNER - EXCELLENT WAITER!

By PJSHaverford |

We had a superb business dinner at Butcher & Singer this week - The food and beverages were outstanding, but our waiter, Brian was an absolute rock star - So helpful, knowledgeable and attentive. Ask for Brian when you make a reservation!

Good food but terrible seating!

By rmwpacificbeach |

Great food but terrible seating. I booked a few weeks in advance for a Monday night and although about 80% of the restaurant was empty when we arrived, instead of being seated at one of the many cozy booths or quieter tables that were available , we were seated not only by the kitchen where lots of waitstaff were coming and going, but next to a table set for 12 businessmen. I really hate it when a restaurant, particularly a very nice and pricey one, tries to fill up the less desirable tables first instead of giving the better ones to those who arrive first. I guess I need to be the squeaky wheel more often. That said, the food was good and our waitress was lovely.

Amazing place

By Nicolas B |

Great food, great place, great service with my man Bryan. It's expensive but worth it. Take the baked Alaska!

Great steak

By Dutch_Travel-R |

The Singer and the Butcher is an excellent place for a steak. I enjoyed the meal and glamorous ambiance. Very good and attentive service too.

There are not enough superlatives for this restaurant

By jane_springfield |

I had one of the best meals I have ever had. It sounds crazy to talk about buttermilk biscuits, but wow, their’s are an amazing start to the meal. I got the special for the night, a delicious juicy brisket, and it was so tender that I did not need a knife. The sides were plentiful- definitely good for sharing. The service was outstanding. I cannot say enough about this place.

Perfect evening!

By niemol |

It was fast choice, I booked last table but it was something amazing. Food + furniture + climate inside = great atmosfhere. Prices are above regular but Steaks were perefct, really medium rare was preapred 10/10. I really recomended for business and family time.

Wonderful first class steakhouse

By 1968Travelgirl |

We had the most wonderful dinner at Butcher and Singer! From the minute we walked in and my husband was greeted with Happy Birthday to the minute they flagged our cab to leave it was a wonderful experience. Our waitress was perfect! The rest of the staff was always there to be sure you didn’t want for anything also. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and what can I say about the stuffed hash browns, just WOW! We are very particular about a great steak as we are spoiled with Bob’s Steak and Chophouse in our city but Butcher and Singer is now right up there in quality and service. Thank you to everyone that made our dinner so fantastic.

BIrthday in Philly

By Robert G |

This was an upscale birthday dinning experience. The dinning room is dimly lit and has a very romantic vibe. We started with the crab cake which was delicate and very fresh. At our waiters recommendation we shared the Porterhouse for two. We ordered medium but unfortunately came out rare. The second attempt came out medium and the steak was of great quality juicy with great flavor. Our waiter was great, we asked for a couple of spots for after dinner, and he offered up some Philly greats. When we return to Philly we will defiantly be back

Dinner Was Great

By Jack H |

Really enjoyed dinner here. I had lunch here a couple of years ago and enjoyed it too, but I had never had dinner here. Definitely on my short list of Philadelphia favorites.

Great Steak House

By larryderm |

After a hiatus of several years, he tried the restaurant, once again. We were not disappointed. The steak and the fish selection were excellent, and the waiter was very attentive.

Anniversary Dinner

By Julianna B |

Where to even start. This place blew us out of the water. The wait staff was attentive and amazingly knowledgeable. We started with the shrimp cocktail, and were not disappointed by the size or cook of the shrimp. The cocktail sauce even had fresh horseradish to mix in! The biscuits were perfectly flaky and the butter was phenomenal. My husband and I got the porterhouse for two, medium rare, and it was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten- melt in your mouth perfection. The brussel sprouts are to die for. we finished the night with cappuccino and creamy cheesecake with a blueberry compote. Aside from the perfect food, the wait staff was extremely attentive, filling up glasses before we even noticed they were getting empty, picking up our used plates, etc. My husband and I couldn’t have asked for a better anniversary meal- We will definitely be back!!

Always at the top

By Leonardo M |

Dined here with colleagues after few years but this establishment remains at its top. Competent service and extremely good food. One tiny comment on meat's seasoning...perhaps less salt and pepper so that people can choose the right amount.

Good AND pricy

By AKtravelers22 |

A group of five of us went well we were in Philly for a business trip. There was no doubt that most of the food was wonderful. The biscuits are delightful. Two of us shared the Delmonico Ribeye Which was a really good idea after salads and biscuits and appetizers. Or wait staff was amazing and we had a nice time it isn’t the fastest place in the world. Take time to just go and relax.

Stunning Food

By Joe C |

Butcher and Singer boasts a stunning, luxurious interior that made us feel very exclusive dining there. We visited on New Year's Eve and experienced some issues with table and food waiting times. However, the management team (especially Jenna) handled the situation excellently, offering a solution that ensured we left happy, displaying top-notch customer service skills. We ordered two filets, their famous stuffed hashbrown, and mushrooms and onions. The sides were definitely enough to share between two. The steaks were cooked perfectly with a nice crust, the mushrooms and onions were incredible, and the hash brown was very tasty, though it could have used a bit more seasoning. We ordered a Sauce Diane on the side and this was equally as delicious! As it was our anniversary, we were treated to a mini chocolate brownie and ice cream to share, which was a lovely touch. Overall, Butcher and Singer is a very nice special occasion restaurant that we HIGHLY recommend, despite our issues (on what we are sure is a very demanding evening for any restaurant) we would absolutely return. The price is certainly premium, but the food and service definitely lives up to the price!

Devine Dinner, Better Service - TOP NOTCH

By margaretgresham0603 |

First off, Butcher and Singer was one of the only steak houses in center city who gladly accommodated a party of 10 on a holiday with about a weeks notice. The service was absolutely incredible, the food even better. Best bacon mac I've ever had, filet and porter house were top notch. Will definitely be going back next time we visit the city!!!

Good experience, but could be better

By pyatachok |

A very nice steakhouse in point of ambiance. It would be all 5** rating if all the food, service and value were up to the level of ambiance, but for a place ranking itself this high I think the experience should be closer to perfection then we had. Details: a) FOOD: Tuna Tartare (C) because of the not high quality and a bland taste of the fish which was left alone on the bed of sliced cucumbers with no help of any kind of flavored oils or other flavorings which is a usual case in this dish. Wedge salad (C) huge but again not flavorful and freshness of the lettuce was questionable. Biscuits and butter spread (A) were excellent. New York Strip steak (A) was great, but if we didn't ask for a sauce to come with it we'd never knew that restaurant offers 4 kinds of sauces, because they are nowhere found in the menu and the wait staff doesn't ask or mention them either (speaking about professionalism of the service). BTW the peppercorn sauce we chose was a highlight of the steak and without it steak would loose a lot in point of flavor. Sides (Stuffed potato hash, Creamed spinach and Mushrooms with Onions) (A+) all were excellent, the best we've ever had in steakhouses. But the sizes of them were too huge for two people to finish (more fitting for 4 or more ppl), and it was a pity that for the tastiest part of the meal we didn't have much room left. Wouldn't it be nice if the restaurant offered the half portions option for parties of 2 or less for a fraction of the cost so we could taste more variety of sides instead of paying high price for one? Didn't try desserts because were too full. b) Service was very nice on the most part except of the case I mentioned above. c) VALUE: Not that great if you consider all the flows mentioned above. So, now you know why 4** instead of 5**. But nevertheless we still left in a good mood and happy tummies : ), and plan to come back when in Philly again and taste some more of their main dishes, steaks and sides but skipping the appetizers and in stead leaving room for desserts.

A Must

By KHALILAH BD |

The atmosphere was sultry, the service was impeccable, and the food was top notch. Took the server's recommendation and ordered the stuffed hash browns as a side. He did a great job of describing each dish so we knew what to expect. Think creamy potatoes inside of a potato crust. Members of my party ordered the Delmonico steak, a filet, King Salmon, crab cakes, and oysters. All were well prepared and cooked perfectly. Didn't have dessert...can you say delicious biscuits...but the Baked Alaska looked divine. Will definitely return.

Extraordinary Service

By Carlos R |

Visited with family for my daughter birthday. It was my first time in this restaurant and everything was outstanding. Specially the service was out of this world, from the reception, bar tender and waitress, every one was exceptional. The Porterhouse and the NY Strip were exceptional.

Great food! Great atmosphere!

By Difazj |

The restaurant is themed after the prohibition era and very cool looking! We got the filet mignon Oscar style (with jumbo lump crab meat) and the delmonico. Both were absolutely delicious! We ordered the side of stuffed hash browns and loved it. For dessert we got butterscotch sundae and again, it was a great choice as it was delicious! Would definitely recommend!

Excellent meat

By 01649409 |

Second visit after one year and once again no disappointment. Good service, friendly staff, excellent meat and a nice overall athmosphere are always a guarantee for a nice evening. Shall I ever be in Philly again, I would visit this restaurant for the third time!

Great steakhouse, great service and great ambiance!

By Antonio S |

Wow what a meal! We started with some old fashions that were made the right way over a block of ice. For an appetizer we ordered the escargot. I'm not usually a big fan of escargot but the buttery garlic sauce was out of this world. It was so good, we asked for more biscuits to dunk into the sauce! For entrees, my buddy order the Del Monico steak medium, as recommended by our delightful and witty server. His steak came out perfect. I ordered the veal chop and hands down the best veal I've ever had! The sides were decadent! Halved Brussels sprouts and the best was the bacon mac and cheese! We topped off our meal with a massive slice of carrot cake. Everything was fantastic about our visit to butcher and Singer. Next business trip to Philly, I'll be back!

Solid "Good +" on the "Good-Meh-Suck" scale- I will return!

By Misplaced_Childhood |

On the "Good-Meh-Suck" scale, this was a "Good +". It was a business dinner during the week so it was not overly busy. The food server was attentive. A little hard to hear due to the face mask he was wearing but that is the life we lead currently. The Caesar salad was very good as was the Heirloom Tomato Salad. The Delmonico was very good as well. A tad of disappointment with the Stuffed Hash Browns. I would not order them again. Not that they were bad but they were not what was expected (or I was expecting more). The Turtle Cheesecake was divine. The homemade ice cream was also good. I will be back!

Old world charm

By Ron J |

This is the epitome of clubby woodsy steak house. Located in an old converted bank with polished wood walls, soaring high ceilings, and grand chandeliers. The food is without a doubt some of the best in the city with prices to match. Most notable is the bar tender service. They know what they are doing. If you are looking for a great meal you cannot go wrong here.

Excellent!

By VineyardHill |

This was the closest restaurant and we were starving. Walked in at 9pm and were immediately seated. Great waiter. Food was excellent. The raw bar is so good. Had the two crabs and they were really great. The biscuits...just wow. Those were fantastic. We both ordered the Delmonico cut. Cooked perfectly. They must broil their steaks which is our preferred method. The creamed spinach was very good. Mashed potatoes were good but nothing special. Got one side of Oscar to share which was plenty for two people. Creme brûlée for dessert - very good food. Would definitely recommend.

Amazing!

By Robin D |

Food was delicious! Restaurant is beautiful! Our server was amazing. Had the Shrimp and Crab Louie Salad and Crab Cake. Portions were huge. They gave us a complimentary Baked Alaska because it was my Birthday gift to there! Will definitely go back!

Rushed and Routine

By SandBAtlanta |

I wanted to love it, but it felt so rushed and routine. Our server was so over the top cheesy, I could hardly stomach it. He had a line for everything, felt super rehearsed and unauthentic. You could tell the main objective was to turn the table. The positives - the steaks and martinis were good. I do love a Starr restaurant, but this one fell short for me :(

Dinner and a show

By Andrea B |

Went to the Kimmel Center for a show and then went to eat at Butcher and Singer. They took us early and the staff was very pleasant. Zach was our waiter and was absolutely amazing. He came by many times to check on us and was super nice. Food was outstanding. I can’t wait to go back again.

Why eat at a chain

By dady8tor |

What a great steakhouse. Two things not to miss are the biscuits and the stuffed hash browns. They are kinda stingy with the biscuits and I was very disappointed in the guy trying to be a sommelier and the wine glasses were very poor for a top dollar steakhouse but everything else is so good, I still felt the need to give it a five star rating.

Fun birthday celebration!

By marie e |

We went with our two sons ages 21 and 23 for on of their birthday's I was afraid it would be too stuffy for them. the entire evening was great! Our table was near the bar, our waiter was really friendly, professional and the food was fantastic!

Elegant vintage chic

By BusinessPr0fessi0nal |

Biscuits amazing. Ambience great. Fancy but relaxed too. Great food period. Expensive side and worth it. Surf and turf or just fab fab steaks.

Amazing steaks but...not a special guest

By Maynfinity |

Definitely food is amazing. Steaks are delicious each time, never been disappointed. However, the waiter will make a difference. There were some whose knowledge and manners were mind blowing , butlers’ level, performances that left me speechless ( especially the Afro-American gentleman unfortunately I forgot his name) and then... there are some that simply make you want never to set foot there again. One of the ladies was so ridiculous that we were embarrassed. Restaurant was almost empty, she told us to pick a seat, we choose one and then she said it’s reserved. So we asked if seats can be reserved as per choice and she answered no. So then, we asked how come it is reserved and then she said it’s for special guests. We asked what makes a guest special and how can we be considered special guests as we dine almost weekly there. Her reply was that we can’t become special guests. So my question to Butcher and Singer is how do you choose your special guests? Next time train your waiters to lie more diplomatically.

Family restaurant

By Jorge L |

One of a kind for real. Quality in this place truly matters. I am a big fan of their Philly's steak. Beer choice is good and if you want to try out a good cheese this is definitely the place to go

Phenomenal Dining Experience!

By The World is My Oyster |

What an outstanding dinning experience this turned out to be! The atmosphere was cozy and elegant. Our server Brandy truly went above and beyond, as she was friendly, professional, and so attentive! The food was absolutely spectacular and delicious! We shared the wedge salad, the lobster appetizer, and the onion soup. All three were fabulous! We then shared the Porterhouse which was incredible! It wasn't cheap, but it definitely was worth it!

This right here is the best restaurant on philly, nothing comes better for sure I eat here a lot I would know!

Loved the food and ambiance!

By The J |

My husband and I were in Philly for the weekend and ended up here after longer waits at other establishments. The restaurant is located in an older building with beautiful architecture that really sets the stage for a fancy meal. We do not drink alcohol but if you wanted a drink, there was a zillion (literally!) options to choose from. While we were waiting, they kept our water glasses full and brought our their version of biscuits. I am not a fan of them and was hesitant to try and I was glad I did when my husband talked me into it. They were yummy!! My husband ordered the pork chop and it was delicious. I ordered the king salmon but was disappointed with the size of the portion compared to the price paid. The taste, though, was great. We shared the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes and my husband had a salad. I was stuffed to the gills! They offered us dessert, and although I am sure it is divine, I had no room for it. I would definitely return!

Nice Decor , great food

By Jcxny |

Everything was really nice here, food tasted good , service was prompt. Also my favorite was the special blend of Makers Mark Whiskey that they had. I did order a rare steak and it came out refrigerator cold but that was corrected immediately. I would come back here next time I visit Philly without a question.

Interesting venue

By UC1Scooter |

Took my daughter here while dropping her off to start her college career. The vibe was definitely throw back (way back). Our wait was minimal and were seated pretty close to the reservation time. The wait staff were very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and specials, and the food was very good (of course, we had steak - cooked just to our liking). I would highly recommend for that special night out.

Beautiful historic setting

By ironfamilyNewZealand |

I can’t fault this place for a very special night. The atmosphere and surroundings are wonderful. The menu has several great choices. My group of 6 all ordered seafood appetisers and steaks- each one was beautifully presented and the different steaks were all perfectly cooked and very tasty. The side dishes are great. We did not have room for desert. The wine menu is very extensive and the sommelier was very knowledgeable

Horrible Staff and Treatment towards Customers

By Ines R |

I am genuinely disappointed and hurt. We came visiting from Europe and spoke our local language whilst entering. We got stopped before entering and incredibly rudely approached. The man at the door, heard myself speaking to my partner, and then decided to turn to another Individual at the door and whisper to him, that we aren’t from around here, in a disgusted tone. The spoken to individual then approached myself and told me I was not dressed appropriately and they cannot let me inside. I understood the dress code necessity and would have gone to change, if not the whole lead up to the situation. I felt incredibly rudely treated, and didn’t even get to try the food. I really do not recommend, for the staff really makes this place feel uncomfortable. Decided to go to Giuseppe and Sons instead. The food was the best I’ve had so far and was treated exactly in the opposite manner than this restaurant. I was warmly welcomed, had a great romantic evening, and the atmosphere and servers were perfectly adequate. Most importantly this is the place to go for real good food!

OUTSTANDING A++

By Jim M |

We took our son (party of 7) to Butcher and Singer for his 21st birthday on Friday night.. absolutely the right choice. Christopher went above and beyond to make his birthday dinner a night to remember. He made suggestions that really enhanced our dining experience. When you go.. do not just focus on the food (although it was great).. enjoy the atmosphere, the conversation..the history and you will have a night to remember. Oh.. Make sure you get the truffle butter if you order stake. As we were driving away my wife said... so.. when are we coming back.. as they say happy wife happy life.. so we will be back soon... thank you once again..

Always a guarantee

By Leonardo M |

I've been here few other times throughout the years and it always meets my expectations. Attentive service and good food.

Wonderful steaks and outstanding service

By Krissyalx |

We enjoyed our family dinner. The service was outstanding and the restaurant itself is beautiful. We all ordered steaks that were cooked to perfection. We ordered oysters, tuna tartar, onion soup, sides and dessert. All were very good. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because it is extremely expensive.

Like the best of the 1960's

By Mike from C'ville |

the ambiance at Butcher & Singer reminds me of the best of the early 1960's, the tables and booths are comfortable and spacious, the wait and bar staff are courteous and friendly, and the menu is "classic steakhouse". The beef is traditional cut and well prepared. The sides are classic and ample. the baked Alaska is a real treat, This is not the place for those seeking the haute modern cuisine or beef imported from Japan. The service is particularly outstanding, I recommend them for anyone seeking good food, solid service, traditional and well prepared staple for any fine dining steakhouse.

Beautiful restaurant with very average food !

By JohnY303 |

Lovely dinning room, staff is pleasant and friendly. Prices are very high and unfortunately the food is only average. I have been several times in the past 4 years. Nice location and elegant room...............but don't eat the food !!

Perfect Dinner for Our Reunion

By Kristen N |

Our group of 10 dined at Butcher & Singer in June. Our group had a reservation for a Monday evening and we were seated promptly upon our entire party arriving. Robbie was our server, he was friendly and gave us excellent advice regarding the menu and entrée preparation. The biscuits and honey butter made everyone happy. A couple of starters were ordered. I personally had the onion soup, I’ve never had so much melted cheese in onion soup before and it was amazing! Many steaks were ordered and everyone raved on the flavor & they were cooked to perfection. Robbie steered several of the men away from ordering their steak cooked medium rare, and he was correct as medium was perfection. The side dishes are very generous and each can feed 3-4 people. We decided to share several sides, family style and we each sampled most of the sides that are offered from the menu. A few of us also ordered desserts to be shared family style, and Robbie also accommodated us by bringing extra dessert plates and utensils. The ambiance of the building is perfect, but the service and quality of food is why Butcher & Singer is phenomenal.

Excellent dinner experience, but with a few faults

By Gary H |

With outstanding service, pleasant surroundings, and great-tasting food, Butcher and Singer should be on everyone's list for a special evening out in Philadelphia. Before ordering, we were served some of the best bread we have tasted, with accompanying honey butter, which was largely wasted on us. We then ordered a drink (for me) and a glass of wine for her; buying by the glass appeared to require no compromise, since the higher-quality wines by the bottle were, frankly, outrageous in price. We started our meal by splitting a wedge salad, which was extremely generous in size, and went on to a filet for her and a Delmonico steak for me. Both were cooked perfectly (medium rare) and simply delicious. The whipped potatoes were ordered as a side but were really not needed, given the size of the steaks. Throughout, service was perfect; our server Chris was always there when needed, but never intrusive, and offered many useful suggestions (such as splitting the wedge salad and ordering wine by the glass). Lots of other helpers; our empty plates were whisked away promptly and a water glass was never far from being full. Why, then, only 4 stars rather than 5? First, we were seated next to an extremely large group, each of whom seemed intent on out-shouting the others. There was also a continuous stream of servers passing our table, never jostling us but always a concern. Second, my Delmonico steak, although excellent in taste, had a ribbon of gristle that made eating part of it impossible, and a band of fat that really should have been trimmed. Overall, I estimate that at least quarter of the large-appearing portion was wasted.

Good Meal & Drinks

By GWsugar |

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Philadelphia and it’s been several years since our last visit. We love the city and enjoy making plans to get back post pandemic for dining. As usual Butcher & Singer did not disappoint, our meals and drinks were delicious. The service was excellent as well.

All around a fantastic experience

By Mace B |

Great food, great service, great ambience, a really good place to go anytime. The salmon was excellent. The biscuits they give you to start hard to die for. And the lemon box. Dessert was fantastic if you like lemon

Rockstar evening

By travelqueen15 |

Made plans to stay in the city for the night and booked dinner here. It was amazing from start to finish. Service was impeccable, food delightful and atmosphere iconic. Our server was really lovely and on top of everything. We had crab dip, calamari and shrimp cocktail as appetizers and all were so good. Cesar salad was enormous. We all went with steaks. The filet with bone in was delicious- the mashed potatoes are not to be missed. My only complaint was not saving room for dessert.

Nice atmosphere, service great

By diablosandwich |

Visiting from Dallas, where we know a good steakhouse. Butcher & Singer has great atmosphere with a traditional, old town Great Gatsby feel to it. From the moment we walked in until we left the service was top notch. We took all the recommendations of our waiter for steak & the way chef prepares it & it was right on the money. Stacked up nicely to some of the best in Dallas.

Perfect from the start

By worktotravel14 |

Fantastic experience at an independently owned and classic American steakhouse. From start to finish, service is a craft and we were well treated. We ordered so much that I thought I'd pop and took home a few dishes. The meal starts with awesome choices for cocktails or wine and homemade biscuits that are truly a buttery, pastry bliss. You want more, but since the meal is so big you don't get more. We started with a maple-peppered pork belly that was sensational. Two people can easily share one steak, but we tried two and skipped the tomahawk at the server's advice. Try a pepper-crusted delmonico and a porterhouse for one. Each steak was perfectly cooked. We asked for an Oscar preparation onthe side. It came with ample crab lump meat and bernaise sauce that when mixed with the crab brought through the flavors of the islands perfectly. Mushrooms and onions were a stand out side. I'd skip the baked potato next time. It was delish, but not anything that I could not cook at home and do better. We finished with dessert. The Baked Alaska was amazing. The meringue toasted to perfect, the banana a perfect juxtaposition, and a perfect crust. All service was perfect and attentive from start to finish in spite of being seated next to a large party.

Amazing evening

By lorraine |

Wonderful evening with the most amazing dinner. Service was great from Amanda. Best steak ever. Went to McCormick & Schmick the following night and walked out after very pour service and lack of service. Can not comment on food as after 60 minutes we did not have anything placed in front of us to report on

Great Place for Lunch During Philadelphia Restaurant Week

By tdkersh |

My friend and I had lunch during restaurant week at Butcher and Singer. It is in a big, beautiful old building that was the site of the National Bank, then it became Butcher and Singer stock brokerage, hence the name. The food, value and ambiance were wonderful. Our server was adequate but abrupt and not very friendly. I got crab cake for my appetizer which was small but tasty. For my entree I got the Butcher Burger without the onions. The burger and fries were delicious and very large portions. The only problem we had was my friend's burger was not cooked correctly. She specifically asked for well done with no visible pink and it was served medium with lots of pink. The manager stopped by and told us she would get a new well done burger which she did in about 5 minutes. For dessert we both got Chocolate Pot de Creme which was also excellent. This 3 course lunch was only $20 per person and we were not charged for the unsweetened iced tea we each got. Highly recommend Butcher and Singer especially during restaurant week!

Top Service Steak House

By William C |

Localed in an old bank building, Butcher & Singer have incredibly delicious food and a staff that serves like you were royalty. A little pricy, but probably the best food in town.

The Environment Was Boys Clubby-The Food No Better Than Average

By DHL4457 |

I would not recommend Butcher and Singer for a cozy couples dinner. The restaurant was mainly groups of men. Our steaks were nicely cooked, but very heavily salted, and the side dishes were uninspired. The potato pancake was greasy. The server was attentive-we didn't complain about the food, but for the environment alone we wouldn't go back. For a great steak and a private environment, go to the other Stephen Starr steakhouse, Barclay Prime. Prices are comparable, the food is so much better.

Classy, expensive, worth it

By Ed L |

We were in town to visit my friend’s son at school and wanted to treat him to a nice experience. The dining room was very classy, and we managed to be seated in a rear corner away from everyone (which was fine given the current situation). All of us ordered some type of steak, which were excellently prepared. We started with salads, and we ordered some vegetables and their recommended potato hash brown side, which was really good. Their wine list is excellent, and we had a very nice bottle of red. Service was excellent, and we had a very enjoyable experience. Expensive but well worth it.

They target POC

By Karii Pizarro |

They follow black people accusing them of stealing even if the bill was paid. As soon as the waiter stated being recorded, she magically remembered how the bill was actually paid for and even a tip was left

Amazing!

By Paula S |

My husband loves a steak and boy did we pick the right place! The food was topped off only by the most excellent of waiters, Brian. What that man didn't know about the menu wasn't worth knowing! As Brits at the end of our holiday, (where we had already eaten way too much food) we unfortunately had to skip the starters, even tho we were tempted, as we knew we wouldn't finish our mains. The steaks were cooked to perfection, the sides of hash brown and mushrooms & onions were delicious and the cocktails were great. After a rest we did manage to share a dessert and that just about finished us off! Everything about the evening, the meal, the venue, the 5* service was outstanding. It wasn't cheap, but worth every penny and we are still talking about it now, long after our return. Do yourself a favour and have a meal to remember, and hopefully you will get Brian to serve you.

Wonderful Experience

By Nicole L |

We went for a college graduation celebration dinner. The food is pricey, but worth every penny. We ordered the lobster Newburg, twin lobster tails and steaks. Everything was absolutely delicious. The pre-dinner rolls were very light and flakey, we couldn't stop eating them. The staff is super attentive and will come and reshape your napkin on the table if you even get up to go to the bathroom. Very dark and romantic if that's the atmosphere you are looking for. You will not be disappointed choosing this restaurant for a special occasion.

Best Steaks

By M S |

Ordered the NY Strip...hands own best steak I've ever had. Smashed potatoes were divine, also brccolini was excellent. Pricey...yes, but you get what you pay for, huge portions...you can split a side with someone as the portions are hige.

Fabulous meal, impeccable service & great venue!!

By D i |

A fabulous meal with impeccable service! Great wines, but California wines are wildly priced, 4-5x the retail price. So, recommend going with any other wines such as French, Italian and others. Decor is beautiful and from an old bank building. We'd go back in a heartbeat. We're about 45 minutes from CA wine country and go often as we belong to wine clubs there.

Exceptional Dining Experience

By Joanne L |

A good place for celebration with a beautiful atmosphere. Services provided was exceptionally great with good food. For starter, we ordered the Lobster cocktail which was delicious. While for main, we ordered the pork steak and steak fillet which was scrumptious. Highly recommend to go for dinner in Pennsylvania.

Best Philly Steak House

By EdW502 |

We went with family to B&S to celebrate our nephew's graduation from Temple. We weren't sure when we picked B&S over other nationally-known steakhouses, but without a doubt, we made the right decision. B&S is located in a deceptively non-descript building that was previously a bank. Inside, the dining room is exquisite, with high ceilings and an ornate, but 1940s supper club style. The steaks are excellent: best we ever had and our party has been to several of the top steakhouses across the U.S. Amazing meal, service and ambience. Have no doubts: this is the best steakhouse in Philly.

Super

Great steak restaurant in a great athmosphere. Our server was very helpful with any questions we had. I had a great steak as did my partner starter was also fantastic great cocktails and wine list. It’s pricey but good value I felt .

Comfortable, Friendly and Great Food

By Suzanne |

Six of us girlfriends were seeking a relaxing place with a classy Philadelphia attitude while eating great food. This restaurant fit the expectation and was a delight after a hard day at work while in from California. It was cold outside but warm and cozy inside this restaurant. Easy walk from hotel on Broad street. The Cobb Salad was perfect as was each steak ordered. Lemon drop cocktail was mixed perfect. The bread served with meal was also warm and extra special. Don’t miss this restaurant while in a Philadelphia, as it is easy to miss as the style is inside not at the entrance which is misleading from the street.

Simply the best steak place

By psu1999 |

Simply the best steak place around. We have been here 5 times and yes expensive but worth every penny. We had filet, rib eye and porterhouse. The chicken dish was a hit for the non meat eater. All were cooked to perfection. The sides were has browns, mushrooms and spinach. We can’t wait to go back.

Excellent food, great restaurant

By Urielf |

The best steak I have ever eaten was Singer & Butcher's Delmonico. On my first visit there a few months ago, I ordered the Filet Mignon. Having a rather limited capacity for meat, especially in the evening, I picked the smallest steak, 8 oz only. It was good. The friends I dined with back then ordered the Delmonico and praised it as if it was pure gold. So on my next visit, earlier this week, I ordered the Delmonico. They were right. Superbly delicious. Extraordinarily good. Don't go there. Run.

Decent, not spectacular

By N D |

The space is beautiful. The service was great. The biscuits were fantastic. The Caeser, Mushroom and Onions and NY Strip were all fine. The NY Strip comes with what feels like a salt and pepper rub on it. The steak was a nice quality cut and was very well prepared but was very, very salty.

Happy 21st

By Saundra E |

We had the best experience at Butcher & Singer for our son's 21st brithday. The bone-in-filet is a must!!! Our waiter, Ricky, made the entire experience one that we will never forget. The drinks were fabulous. The sides are terrific and absolutely compliment the steak. Even the creme brulee was awesome. If you are in the Philly area and want a great steak Butcher & Singer is the ONLY place to go. Worth the trip, worth the price. And be sure to ask for Ricky

Great Dinner, Great location

By Jerry T |

Went to dinner with my son while in Philly on college visits. Place is right downtown and had wonderful steaks and side. We will be back.

Starr’s star has flamed out

By Dougmg |

This meal will be my last at a Starr establishment. The Starr blueprint over-relies on beautiful spaces serving good food and outrageous-for-what you-get prices. At these prices the food need to be great, but the food is only good. And this is true at each of his places. Beautiful spaces and very pricey food that is only good. Starr ought to retire.

Excellent

By meryll83 |

Excellent food in an impressive building, friendly service. We definitely over-ordered on the food, perhaps a warning from the server would have been helpful!

Very nice lunch

By EnjoyMyReviews |

Came for business lunch. Salad with salmon added was very fresh. Everyone liked their meals from salads to sandwiches. Very nice atmosphere. Service was attentive when needed, but slow. Had to ask to order. Ask for bill. Recommend

Excellent Ambiance and Bites

By Nick S |

I’ll start by saying, make reservations ahead of time. This Is a Gem. Upon entering B&S you are immediately warmly greeted by the staff. Unfortunately my visit was last minute and I was told it would be about and hour and a half wait. Have no fear. You can dine at the bar. From start to finish the service was excellent! Both bar and wait staff were on point. Our choice... the delmonico medium rare, onion soup, filet minion, and roasted vegetables. Steaks were cooked perfectly. The soup was layers of flavour and the veggies was the healthy and delicious alternative to just potatoes. The atmosphere was classy and there were no shortage of decent scotch at the bar. Well worth the visit. I know the place is $$$$ but it’s worth at least one visit if you are in Philadelphia. Thanks for the hospitality Philly! Cheers Nick S

Good food, excellent service

By Michael Lane |

Went for lunch with good friends during restaurant week. They had a set menu to offer tastings which looked amazing, but I went for the regular menu to try out their steaks. I said I would let the chef prepare the steak as they see fit, and the server suggested medium rare (actually usually my preference anyway), which she described as pink with a little red in the center. It was a great size filet mignon, but overcooked. It came completely cooked, a little dry, with a touch of pink (barely) in the center. I asked for mashed potatoes (which were buttery and delicious) as a side which came out as I was finishing the steak despite my waiting for it first and a reminder. They kindly offered to cover the cost of the potatoes. The server was extremely polite and professional and the atmosphere (decor and music) were awesome. Definitely will return despite being a little disappointed with the filet.

Great night out

By LaxRefDad |

We had a great time at this Steak House in Central Philly. The atmosphere is really nice with cathedral ceilings and ambiance lighting. Service was Very Goos as Zach took good care of us. We started with Calimari and Builleit Manhattans, The petite filet was outstanding and the delmonico was perfect. Try the stuffed Hash Browns and the baked Cauliflower. Desserts looked decadent but i settled in with a capuccino and a tawny port. Great experience all around.

Exceptional!

A Most Enjoyable and Memorable Dinner

By Nicholas D |

Our dinner at Butcher & Singer on Sunday, February 23rd, was exceptional. The restaurant is a classic design with a very low noise level. From the time we arrived and until we were finished our dinner we found the staff at Butcher & Singer to be warm, friendly, courteous and efficient. Our waiter was Matt and you couldn't ask for a more perfect gentleman. He was very informative and efficient and always made sure that we were not in need of anything. Our meals were outstanding! My filet was cooked perfectly to my satisfaction and was delicious while my wife ordered the Branzino and she found it to be delicate to the taste and quite pleasing to the palate. In addition to our entrees we also ordered the butcher salad which was exceptional and large enough to share. For our sides we also ordered the stuffed Hash Browns and the roasted brussels sprouts. Both sides were very good and were also large enough to share. Needless to say our dinner at the Butcher and Singer was enjoyable and very memorable.

Outstanding

By irishblueeyes21 |

Had a business meeting and picked this restaurant because someone from the area suggested it and I saw the pictures online and loved the devour. It didn’t disappoint. From the fabulous service, incredible food and the atmosphere was so comfortable and inviting. Really beautiful and you were able to hold conversation but nice music in the background. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the food was over the top great. I would highly recommend and will return.

First Class Dining With Real Panache

By Kathleen P |

Ask for Brian to be your server; your expectations of excellence in waitstaff will be elevated. It’s a given the talented/gifted Brian would not work in a restaurant beneath his particular level of expertise, so expectedly, the food equally amazing.- The Delmonico steak was the star of our foursome along with a fab filet, veal chop, and the salmon was beautiful. The “side” of “stuffed hash brown’s,” and the oysters ...also sublime. I could go on and on ... all of the evening’s elements; the friendly hostess, the delicious decor, the just right dim lights, the menu (drinks and food) all stunning - but the service of Brian and his team packaged the experience up in great ... just right “panache” including great hugs at our departure. One last thought —- Don’t go if you’re bargain hunting - be prepared to invest in the experience. We were only in Philadelphia one night ... grateful our colleague made the recommendation, looking forward to my next visit.

Restaurant Week lunch

By Arlene J |

Met a friend for lunch. The food was delicious. Our server was excellent was friendly and knowledgeable.

A fabulous dining experience but then you are certainly paying top dollar for it.

By Roberts69 |

A very romantic and ambient dining location. High ceilings, low lighting and warm decor make for a very cozy and classy dining experience. The menu has some great options... I started with a Shrimp Cocktail, followed by a 14oz boneless NY Strip with two sides (Mashed Potatoes & Brussel Sprouts) and finished with Pumpkin Cheesecake. Everything was superb. The wait staff were smartly dressed and super professional. A great fine dining experience. My 3 course meal cost $112 with tax and that was without any drinks as I stuck to water. So if you are drinking you should budget on $150 per person minimum and you could easily spend way more than that!

Great food and venue

By AndreNorway |

Our reservation was not registered for a graduation dinner(!), but the restaurant took good care of us and immediately found a good table for us. We were served an excellent, huge Tomahawk Steak to share as well as some of the best fries and potato ridges we have had. Not to mention the bread (or biscuits as they called them) which were actually the best "bread" we can ever remember! The restaurant is elegant with a very tall ceiling and huge chandeliers. Great jazz music. Would definitely return if in Philly again.

Not great ... for the money!

By Tracyc1266 |

Not great ... for the money! We appreciated the matre d finding us a table over a grate ... however we did not appreciate the server forgetting about us the whole time! When you pay that much for a meal you expect the service to be just as good as the food! Not in this case ...server forgot the bread ... so it came with the meal ... seriously ....and then gave us our side items 20 minutes into our meal! She tried at the end to comp us a dessert but we weren’t interested! My NY strip was ok ... the potatoes and bread were very good! When we got them ...just not what we expected for a high end steak house and two starving adults!

Great Food and Atmosphere

By Daina S |

The food, service and atmosphere are all wonderful here. We loved everything we ordered and the portions were large. Waiter was attentive and very nice. Just be prepared to spend a lot of money.

Butcher and Singer will see me again soon!!

By Joe P |

Whenever in Philadelphia, this is a must go to Restaurant! I have never been disappointed in the quality of the food, the professional staff, or the warm ambience with subdued lighting. This gets a 10 out of 10 score. Last night I had the beef tenderloin/filet mignon with a homemade peppercorn sauce. It was as good as something we have in Texas! The mashed potatoes were creamy and buttery and what real mashed potatoes should taste like! And did I tell you about the homemade biscuits with the honey butter? Or how about thebaked Alaska dessert, which you can find nowhere! I’ll be back, sooner than later!

Fine dining at its Best

By Minniepetunia |

Impossible to dine here without feeling the gravitas. Privilege. 25’ ceilings, 6’ diameter chandeliers, wood paneling. The feeling of a gentlemen’s club circa 1928. Superb service, excellent bartender. Exceptional waiter, if a wee bit too chatty. I love these basic menus, steak, potato, salad, veg, all cooked to perfection. Leave your budget behind and go. Make it a point. This is one to write home about.

Date Night

By Tom B |

Great meal. Christopher provided great service. We had a reservation and were immediately seated. As others have suggested the Delmonico steak is well prepared and the hash brown potatoes are as good as others have said. The Onion soup was some of the best I have had. The restaurant is a beautiful room and easy to carry on a conversation.

Best dinner I’ve ever had!

By Trisha F |

I’ve been to a number of steakhouses in PA and NJ and this by far was the best! Our server Matt was outstanding, our drinks were excellent and our meal was amazing!!! I cannot wait to return. Highly recommend.

Steak Service and beyond

By dan |

Went to Butcher and singer for our anniversary. Everything was perfect from the service to the ambiance, to the food. A restaurant evocative of a 40s hollywood type restaurant. The service was impeccable, Our waiter Ricky was Excellent Friendly, courteous, and efficent. I started out by having the escargot which i order in any restaurant that serves it, it was cooked perfectly, I then had the NY strip cooked medium and sides of creamed spinich and fries both enough for two , The steak was cooked to perfection and was extremely flavorful. They brought us out a complimentary glass of sparkling wine for our anniversary which was a nice touch. for desert I had the cremebrulee which was perfect, between the waiter, warter person and person clearing the table, it was a perfectly timed ballet. If you are a lover of fine food excellent service and great atmosphere then go to butcher and singer is the place to go.

Love this place!

By EA913 |

Such a cool atmosphere (old bank I think?). Always attentive and professional service. Wonderful steaks and a great wine list. Have had great experiences just grabbing a drink at the bar as well. Always on my list when I am in town.

Poor experience all around.

By Usafloadc17 |

Poor experience. Would not recommend. Was Sean in by the bone in filet. Ordered medium and came out rare plus at best. Was also overcharged wine by two glasses. Seems like there’s better choices in the area.

Wow, what a Meal!

By dave k |

Came here to celebrate a friends birthday and what a meal we had. Great place and what great staff. Our waiter was awesome and gave us some great suggestions on our first visit. We started with Oysters and then for the main course we had the Delmonico Steak. Wow. That was a great pick! We ended up having the baked Alaska for dessert. Yum!

Too expensive and disappointing !

By CH-Travellers |

We were really disappointed : the prices are so high and the quality so low for such a highly rated restaurant. The menu is quite poor and doesn’t give any indications about the food which will be served. The wine list is simply not affordable. We therefore don’t understand why this restaurant is highly rated by Trip Advisor, as this shouldn’t be the case.

Top notch steak house

By Jay F |

This is a top notch steak house......after walking out of Steak 48......we walked to this establishment and were seated promptly......the host and seater we're pleasant the decor beautiful and the table settings elegant......we had the seafood platter from the raw bar...... everything was cold and fresh......I had the tomahawk ribeye and my wife had the porterhouse......we had the creamed spinach and a bottle of Chardonnay........the steaks we're cooked to perfection the server prompt and polte.....we had the baked Alaskan for dessert......this is a dining experience......sit enjoy.....you will love this restaurant from begining to end

The overall experience was OK

By shakera h |

My boyfriend and I came here spontaneously after getting a massage. The steak was delicious , although not seasoned. The sides were not very favorable but that’s just my tastebuds and preference speaking out loud. We went during the week so it wasn’t very crowded. However the place that we were seated has an upper level of seats right above it and my boyfriend and I couldn’t enjoy our conversation without feeling interrupted by the 2 people sitting right above us in arms reach. Not to mention they were discussing very outrageous topics that was disturbing to our whole night. The waitress was very well mannered and pleasant. Overall great experience. I will come back but I’m not in a rush

Best biscuits I’ve ever had!

By Nicole A |

Let me first say, I don’t eat beef, so I cannot comment in the steaks, though everyone else loved their meals. I had the lamb, which was perfectly cooked. My favorite sides were the brussel sprouts and creamed spinach. Stuffed hash browns were excellent too. But the real star was the warm biscuits, which are a piece of flaky delicious heaven. The only let down of the entire meal was the bacon. I would pass. Everything else was divine.

Perfection

By Dawn S |

Everything about our experience was perfection. From drinks at the bar, to the dining room, appetizers, martinis, wine, and of course, our meal, everything was exactly what one would expect from a high end restaurant. Dining room is beautiful. Servers were professional and knew the menu well. Food was delicious, and exactly as described. Steaks and lobster were wonderful, but don't miss the stuffed hash browns. This place is $$$$ but worth every penny. B&S is a perfect place for a special occasion. We enjoyed it immensely and will be back.

Great overall experience despite some issues

By david c |

Myself and my wife enjoyed a lovely dinner at this buzzy and busy restaurant. The setting is a wonderful brasserie-style room, dimly lit on different levels with a mix of tables and chairs and booths. They have maximised the dining room space so the entrance where you are greeted can get very crowded, the bathrooms are very small and they don't seem to offer a coat check, but it all added to the bustling atmosphere. Our waiter was experienced but strangely didn't serve our food, so we had a bus boy clear our tables and a different person serve our food - perhaps this is normal in some American restaurants? Unfortunately, the food was a mixed experience and our rating remains high because of the overall experience. The tuna tartare was very dull and bland, the iceberg wedge was very tasty and the steak was good (we shared a porterhouse). But the pepper sauce was very poor and we had to send it back. Overall a great experience but not sure I would return.

Great food - service - and atmosphere

By Leon B |

The halibut was a generous portion and moist and flaky. The pork chop was juicy but well cooked - great flavor. The signature salad was super and large enough for sharing. The cocktail and wine selection is great and reasonably priced. Definitely try the signature martini. Dessert selection was great and we were so full we only had the crime brûlée and it was a generous portion for two. We will definitely return here when we are in Philadelphia. Beautiful ambiance that complements the great food and service!

Good food good service

By Francine_jm |

My husband and I attended with my colleges for our Christmas dinner, I want to start by saying the service was very prompt and friendly. We ordered close to every appetizer (I do not eat tar tar) we all enjoyed them all, with the exception listed above for me but everyone else was blown away. We all ordered different entrées and not one person had a complaint. I ordered the steak which was cooked perfect and the sides complimented my food perfectly. This is a pricy choice but even just for a special occasion it is an adventure of delicious flavors!

Fantastic Dinner Spot

By linkakk |

Fantastic experience and meal all around. From drinks to starters to entrees to desserts, everything was delicious. The space is beautiful as well. Highly highly recommend for a business dinner.

What an experience!

By livinginPA |

From appetizers ( oysters) to main( Delmanico ) to dessert( baked Alaska) DELICIOUS. Creamed spinach and brussel sprouts were so good! Our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive; he was helped by a team of professionally trained helpers keeping our glasses full and courses moving along at our pace. The music and lighting were like a soundstage.. creating a magical evening. Well worth the price. My husband and I spent 1.5 hours from dinner ( with wine) to dessert for around 300 with tip.

Good Food but Pricy

By Kristina N |

Overall, it was an OK experience. I have been to a ton of steakhouses and I would say this is probably one of my least favorites. The steak was cooked well but it was kind of plain/dry in flavor. The Bacon Mac & Cheese and stuffed hash browns, however, were AMAZING. It was super expensive so I don't think I would really go back for the steak (but I would go back for the sides)

Glorious meal, great atmosphere, wonderful service

By Mazzystar68 |

Impressive from the moment we walked into the former banking hall - buzzy Friday night, old world glitz atmosphere. Then we met Brian - our server. Brian was simply wonderful- explaining the menu and options, different cuts, ensuring that we would be happy with our cooking requests etc, answering all our questions. Faultless service. Hope you have a wonderful holiday Brian ! For starters we had the organic heirloom salad, crab cake, and potato skins. Husband and I had the Porterhouse for 2 and the kids had NY strips - all perfectly cooked - with sides of creamed spinach and mashed potato. We were happily and totally sated but opted to share a creme brulee while we were finishing our wine. Not cheap for an accidental holiday meal but well worth it. Best meal we have had in a long time.

Burger addiction warning

By Sari Al |

Their roasted butternut squash soup is totally worth going back for. Don't think about it and just get the Butcher Burger: A wonderfully juicy and massive 10-ounce dry-aged prime beef patty with caramelized onion and English cheddar, fried onions on a house-baked bun. I had trouble putting my burger down, how can anyone resist this one. I highly recommend that Butcher and Singer consider calling their Burger "Butcher Heaven Burger." Chocolate Caramel Tart for dessert? YES, please. Who would resist this baby! Its any chocolate lover's dream! The sweet pastry tart shell was flaky and delicious. The dense and rich bittersweet chocolate ganache was incredibly smooth! I cannot find words to describe how much I loved the homemade salted caramel. This is one of the best desserts I've ever had!! Our waiter, Andrew, was exceptionally knowledgeable, very patient, and kind to everyone. There were ten people in our party. Everything was delivered to the table in a timely manner. Another winner from Stephen Starr! At Butcher and Singer, there are way too many delicious ways to get fat.

Restaurant Week stand out

By theRG913 |

Came here for Restaurant Week and had a fabulous evening. We arrived early for our reservations just so we could hang out at the swanky bar they have. House cocktails did not disappoint and the bartenders were very professional. We we seated at a table for two on the upper side level. Table is just big enough to accommodate the required glasses and plates. The styling and ambience make me think that this is where the cast of Mad Men would go when they wanted a steak dinner. And what a steak dinner it was. My piece of fillet was as tall as it was round. Cooked a perfect medium rare and rested long enough so no juices were waisted yet the meat was still warm. Alas, the stuffed hash browns were not on the prix fixe menu. However the creamed spinach was delicious. Everything about our evening here had polish and class. The staff was welcoming and helpful both to guests and each other. Working as finely together as the jazz bands that provided the soundtrack for the evening.

Great for steak

By Mark T |

The steak is among the best you will have. Definitely worth a dinner if you are visiting Philadelphia. The bar is small but the atmosphere of the place is great. Equally well suited for a business dinner or dinner with friends.

Superior Steaks

By WilSc |

A little more upmarket than I am used to (as were the prices) but well worth the visit for something different. Very elegant place. The steaks were magnificent and waiting staff friendly.

Expected more at this price point…

By TomCork1975 |

We enjoyed a nice evening last week at Butcher and Singer, our meal started with some warm biscuits, they were tasty but a little too salty for my taste! Next a shrimp cocktail which was delicious, presented well, and just enough to get the meal started. This was followed by a delmonico steak, a generous portion of 18oz, while cooked perfectly, the cut was quite veiny which led to a chewy steak experience. I left about half of it behind due to the level of veins in it. The side dishes are a little limited, while the choices of vegetables are good and the portion size is ideal for sharing, the potato options are limited, baked, mashed or a stuffed hash brown… we chose the stuffed hash brown on our server’s recommendation… it’s fried shredded potatoes with a cubed potato and sour cream filling… this was not good or enjoyable… it’s apparently incredibly popular but not to our taste whatsoever. When finished the plates were collected promptly, but we were never asked how our meal was, surprising, considering the amount of steak and potatoes that was left behind. We skipped dessert, and only had a few drinks. The restaurant is trying to be fine dining, but the menu does not match these aspirations… especially a stuffed hash brown. The server was attentive ensuring our water was always filled. While the service and surroundings were good, the food did not live up to expectations.

AMAZING must visit

By John M |

If you want one of the best steaks you will ever eat, want ambiance that is out of a 50's gangster movie, with the 50's music, the wait staff dressed to the 9's and impeccable service. You need to visit Butcher and Singer. My girlfriend and I fly into Philly for a concert and decided to get dressed up and had steak in mind. Let me say, we were so glad we did. I have eaten in 90% of the high end steak houses in the US and Europe for business. But I have to say that Butcher and Singer are in my top 10 best steak houses in the U.S. If in Philly and have the time, you need to take your family or co-workers to dinner here. The cuts of meat, the aging, flavor, top quality. And don't get me started on the sides and dessert dishes. You will not be disappointed in your meal.

wonderful evening

By CJProma |

Unassuming from the outside, you walk into a movie set, great staff and wonderful food. Old school charm, classic flavors enlivened with modern elegance.

Good, and pricey.

By 120491 |

We dined after a performance at the Kimmel Center. It is very nearby. The restaurant is lovely, although the walk to the ladies room was awkward due to the coat room, and the kitchen. The restroom traffic pattern was weird and awkward also. The table for 2 was small and cramped. We shared a house chopped salad, I think I had 1/2 an onion on my plate, (chopped). I like onions, but it was truly excessive. Other than that, the salad was not remarkable. We both ordered the Delmonico steak. They were huge. His steak was a much nicer steak than mine, mine had a strange fat line through the middle. The creamed spinach was fabulous. The stuffed hashbrown was ehh. (We brought most of it home, and re-fried it, which improved it alot). The mushrooms and onions were nothing special.

Excellent

By Kathy C |

We received a gift card to this restaurant for Christmas. The food was excellent, service was great, and the staff was friendly. Highly recommend for dinner when in the city.

Good but not wowed

By Matt D |

The atmosphere to start with was great, exactly what you'd expect from a high end restaurant. The food was good, not as good as other restaurants I'd been to in the past given the price point. I went for the pork chop, and although this was ordered Medium-Well, it still looked a little Medium-Rare in places - it was a thick piece of meat so probably hard to get right all the way through. We feel like some more guidance could have been provided on the size of the side orders - we each ordered a potato side and a vegetable side, however we could easily have gotten away with a single side to feed all 3 of us given the size of them, and so we were left with a large amount of food afterwards (obviously they aren't going to promote us ordering less as that's less income for their pockets). The highlight of the night was our waiter, Brian. Probably the friendliest, most enthusiastic and knowledgable waiter I've experienced, and he definitely added to the experience. Overall, it is worth a visit if you're looking for a top end restaurant in the area, but the food may not quite live up to the price tag.

Must Try

By ake1790 |

Love this place. Food, service, and atmosphere are all wonderful. It will always be our special occasion “go-to”.

5 Stars? Sorry B&S but not quite.

By B6474SUrichardm |

Almost the entire meal was 5 stars but I came specifically for the steaks and they just weren't quite there. I had the Delmonico (medium on recommendation) and a Filet Mignon medium-rare. Both Oscar with King crab upgrade. The steaks were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Oscar was perfect. So why only 4 stars? The meat. I found both steaks to be a bit chewy and lacking internal flavor. This is a top restaurant, so I'm naturally being very picky. The steaks were far superior to run of the mill steak joints but I've had better meat at some of the other top end steakhouses. Loved the atmosphere even with the covid plexiglass (which actually helped the noise level!). I would not recommend (upon sight only IMO) the outdoor seating. Appetizers and sides were top notch! Service excellent. A little better meat and this experience would have been 5 stars all the way.

Worth a visit

By 01649409 |

The restaurant is in a very nice location and offers a pleasant atmosphere which sets the ground for a nice evening. Adding a good service and some excellent meat are the perfect recipe for a great evening. Highly recommended!

The BEST Steakhouse in Philadelphia, PA

By CHEFJDK |

This was truly the ultimate best USA fine dining+culinary experience we have had to-date in our 23 yrs of marriage. B&S Restaurant does everything right from the Hostess staff, Bartenders, to the detailed Servers to the Culinary team. Our table was perfect for 2, private, perfect cool lighting & temperature. Oysters Rockefeller, Crab Louis, Surf & Turf w/truffle butter OMG! ,creamed Spinach, the Philly Nightcap so amazing! Yet, this could all of been" just okay" if it wasn't for HONESTLY the best, most humble and well versed server/communicator, JEREMY. He was perfect in every possible way! If you want a perfect experience, dine very early evening and enjoy THE BEST! Worth every Penny :) Thanks again Jeremy #1 dining server-- pure talent.

Killer martini

By cassidy24 |

Killer martini! Shared the bone in porterhouse for two - tender and perfectly done and seasoned. Excellent hash browns. Overall yummy.

Terrific

By paddycan |

We went to Butcher & Singer to celebrate my son's 21st birthday. Everything from the drinks, appetizers, main course, sides, deserts as well as the service were terrific. The bone in filet was beyond terrific. It is a must order! Our server Rickie was great and helped make the night especially memorable. We will not hesitate to return in the near future.

Elegant dining atmosphere, service speed lagging

By Nick C |

Was here with a large tour group. There should have been more servers considering the size of the group. Food was excellent but my medium rare steak came out with some pretty rare ends. Had waited so long sending it back seemed not worth the trouble.

One of the finest restaurants we've ever had the pleasure of dining at.

By P. Edwin Nibbles |

The snazziest venue, the friendliest employees and the most delicious food ever! How lucky we were to snag a Friday night reservation recently. Cocktails, meals and service were beyond 5 star. Can't recommend Butcher and Singer enough!

Classy with great service

By Margo B |

So lucky my sister and I stopped here for after dinner drinks and dessert, we almost walked right by it! Let me say this first, the service was fantastic, we sat in the cute little window seats and could not have been more pleased with our servers recommendation of cocktails. The hibiscus infused prosecco was on point and the bourbon cocktail complimented the chocolate layer cake we split. Key lime pie was outshined but the amazing chocolate cake, but also worth the calories. Great spot for a romantic dinner, hope my husband and I can do date night here next time we're in town.

Wow this place is awesome

By Duane S |

Top 3 best steaks i have had in my life. The cocktails were excellent. Nathan the sommelier was very helpful. My entire party loved how the wine complimented the steaks. Even the biscuits were delicious. The duck moose with scallops is just wow good. Definitely going again when I go to the city. Impressed!

Phenomenal!!

By JackieG |

This restaurant exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere is gorgeous, we had a large party for my daughter’s graduation and the food was incredible. The steaks were probably the best I have had anywhere! We ordered a variety of dishes and sides and I am not a fan of hash browns but they were delicious. I picked based on reviews and was hoping it was the right choice and so glad I did!

Probably the best meal we've had in Philadelphia

By sasquatchsf |

We visited during Restaurant Week and ordered from the special menu. Drinks were the house-made lemonade and black cherry soda, which were both excellent. Before serving our orders, they brought steaming hot biscuits to the table, which were light, tender, and flaky -- wonderful! For appetizers we had the crab cake, which was absolutely delicious. For the second course we picked the filet minon, and it turned out to be one of the best I've ever had -- perfectly cooked, tender, simple seasoning, strong beef taste. The sides were creamed spinach and mashed potatoes, both wonderful. For dessert we had the chocolate pot de creme, which was insanely decadent. Our waiter, Brian, might be the most professional and friendly I've experienced in years in any restaurant in the world. Besides the above, the interior is truly beautiful! We'll definitely be back -- highly, highly recommended!

Great venue, but a little rushed

We really like to savor an experience that ends up costing $400. We got there early and had a drink-great bar! Table was just ok-we should have spoken up about that but really not a great location at all. Great service but they literally cleared plates when you had just finished the course. They initially asked that we order all at once and then apps came out literally 5 minutes later, then food 20 minutes after that. We were in and out within an hour which really was not enjoyable. Steaks are phenomenal of course and we love Starr restaurants. Just wish we could have had a bit more time to enjoy ourselves and not be so rushed.

Had such high hopes but was Dissapointed

By Sonia M |

I can not judge the food as my visit did not even get that far . Menu looked pretty good prices a little high but was still excited to dine as I had the tomahawk in mind . When I reserved my table I chose outdoor seating assuming like any other restaurant seating would be in a quiet designated area. Not knowing you are literally outside on the side walk with pedestrians walking by . Did not feel comfortable we asked the hostess who had stated she may have something else but she never came back. I just was not comfortable with all the passers-byers literally being able to eye up my dinner . Not really a comfortable ambience for us to dine . So with dissapointment we chose to leave .

Great Steak House

We went with a group of friends and had a wonderful meal. The biscuits are delicious and the Sanger salad was plentiful and very good. Our filts were cooked exactly as ordered and we're terrific. The side of spinach was a perfect compliment to the entree. Service was very attentive and friendly. A great place for a special occasion.

Birthday dinner

We went to Butcher and Singer for a special birthday dinner. Did not realize that they had valet service, but parking was convenient. Had a drink at the bar before our table was ready. The atmosphere was very nice. Music was nice. The meal was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly. The sides were large enough to share. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. The homemade ice cream was yummy. I would go again.

Amazing experience

Beautiful restaurant and great ambiance. Food was outstanding Waitstaff were outstanding, professional, knowledgeable, and amicable. One of the best steakhouses I have ever been to. Highly recommend

Nice Steaks

By John379 |

Had a nice meal with good service from Brian. The place is a little overpriced, the steaks were good but not great. The bone in filet was very good, but the delmonico was a little over cooked. The mushrooms and onions were good but the creamed spinach was just okay.

Steak-tastic

We needed a steak injection after travelling throughout South America and this place did the trick. The service was spot on, the food was delicious, and the building is perfect. Great evening!

Highly recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint!!!

Memorable meal! Will be back when in Philly! Beautiful atmosphere and superior service. One of Stephen Starr's BEST!!!!

Fabulous choice steaks

We had a larger party but were accommodated well. The appetizers were good, the biscuits were off the chart and the main courses were great too. The only regret is that I did not get the ribeye which was their specialty. Would definitely go back.

Not what we expected

By David L |

We went for dinner on 07/12/2022. We were 12. I ordered a white wine , Gavi . It came room temperature , when it was supposed to be cold. The waitress showed me the bottle , the opened it , the she poured the wine for tasting . When I told her that it was warm and not drinkable she said " let me chill it 3/4 minutes " . I answered that 3/4 minutes would have been nothing. She needed a good hour. In the meantime we ordered a Sancerre , that fortunately was cold. Red wine : the first round , Napa cabernet was at the right temperature . The second round , a Ripasso Valpolicella ( red ) , was cold like a white normally should be. These guys have problems with the wine cellar. The service was average and the steaks good but not top. My credit card bill was overcharged by $ 20.00 which I am disputing. We ordered two Margarita, after dinner , they were comparable to those in a cheap bar. Not going back there , and the issue is not the $ 20.00 extra charge , but the rest.

Excellent steakhouse

Me and my husband went to Butcher and Singer to have dinner. Although we had a reservation for a later schedule time, we decided to arrive earlier and were not disappointed. We had a cesar salad and a cobb salad, both delicious. Afterwards we had our meat with potatoes, mine were like roesti potatoes. Cocktails and service was friendly and fast.

Perfection!

I am raving over this restaurant. The food is fantastic (filet, potatoes, broccolini and baked Alaska). My martini was well made and the olives were delicious. The buttermilk biscuits are heavenly-over the top flaky and flavorful. The atmosphere is magical and the staff is super professional, accommodating and friendly. The General Manager Par Maher is well suited to his job. He welcomes the guests and insures that everyone is having a good time. Our server Brandy was a delight. She was attentive and professional plus she has a sparkling personality. Butcher and Singer is our new favorite restaurant !

Ambiance matched only by the cuisine

Birthday dinner with my family. Perfect evening. Filet mignon with bone in was the best steak I have ever had. Side dish of hash browns was a wonderful surprise. The restaurant is located in what was originally a bank but the feel is 1940s Hollywood. Our waiter Brian was great. So informed about all the dishes and quite a singer. Not inexpensive however I felt it was worth it. A memorable evening.

Exceptional evening.

Celebrated my son's birthday. Had reservations and promptly seated on a busy Saturday evening. Excellent service and exceptional food. We often eat at Morton's but B&S is definitely a step above. I had the halibut which was delish. And the biscuits! If you're worried about the prices, this isn't a place for you. Can't wait to return on our next trip to Philadelphia.

Best martini happy hour in Philadelphia IMO!

By Sian K |

The best martini spot in Philadelphia. Hands down. There's simply no better place to belly up to the bar and have a few martinis at happy hour!

Professional bartenders needed

Wandered in on the later side. Decided to sit at the cozy corner bar. Very attractive restaurant. Dim lighting. Nice menu. Very good porterhouse and decent wines. Sadly the barren were too busy flirting with a group of women also at the bar. Dampened the experience.

Worthy of #1 Steakhouse

By TDHSNJ |

Our party of 6 adults ate at Butcher & Singer on Saturday 3/16. Little did we know that we were in for such a fantastic meal. We splurged and ordered the large seafood tower. It was filles with raw oysters and clams, colossal shrimp, lump crab meat, lobster and crudo of scallops. It was very fresh and plentiful. The steaks (2 delmonico, 3 filets) all ordered medium rare, along with a veal chop were superb. Each steak was precisely cooked, seasoned well, and had a nice, but not overly salted crust. The sides we ordered were big enough to share (creamed spinach, mushrooms and mac/cheese) for the 6 of us. We were pleasantly full but opted to share a few desserts - key lime pie (fantastic), layered chocolate cake (huge portion) and creme brulee (velvety smooth). All desserts hit the spot and were a fitting conclusion to a great meal. Service was very efficient and attentive without getting in the way too much. Only issue I had is that the circular table for the 6 of us was a bit too small for the amount of food (steaks, sides, bread, drinks) and dinnerware, which did create some maneuvering of glasses and dishes. We can't wait to go back.

Outstanding in every way. Expensive!

By bobbyripe |

We arrived without a reservation and were extremely lucky to be seated immediately in a small nook next to the entrance. Not as loud as being in the center of the restaurant, with a good view of the comings and goings. The food was superb and everything arrived with the correct temperature: the Wedge Salad and the Lemon Ice Box Pie were really cold all the way to the last bite. The lamb chop hot and cooked perfectly. Great service by Ashley. The place was packed, with a great vibe; the space is opulent and very comfortable. The service takes its time; they do not rush you out the door.

Great food!

Very clean restaurant with great food and very nice portions! I had the pulled pork sandwich with Mac n cheese and cornbread. All delicious. The sweet tea was also very good!

Special 40th Celebration

By JodyHatter |

This restaurant is huge and quite impressive. We visited in November and it was freezing outside, so we were hoping for a seat that was well inside the restaurant. We were in town from the UK and visiting Butcher and Singer to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday. The restaurant knew we were celebrating but I don’t feel they tried particularly hard to help us mark the occasion. We were seated in a two person booth directly to the left of the reservation desk, in full view of the door. Like the ‘jumpseat’ on a aeroplane, this was the booth no paying customer should be made to sit in. It was uncomfortably cold for the entire duration of our visit. We asked to move but this wasn’t possible. To be clear, it was -8c outside so every time the door curtain was pulled back (which was approx every 2-3 mins), we got an icy blast. Cast a bit of a shadow over the meal. The food was tasty. Good steaks, quality wine list. Exactly what you’d expect from a restaurant of this calibre. The meal was expensive but had the environment been more inviting it wouldn’t have mattered - it was a celebration meal, after all. But spending a wad of money to freeze my bum off was frustrating. The only recognition that our meal was a celebration was a bit of chocolate fluting saying ‘happy birthday’ on my husband’s dessert plate. Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t expecting a line of can-can dancers to come out of the kitchens singing happy birthday. But a little bit more of an effort would’ve been classy. And Butcher and Singer consider themselves to be a classy place. I am not sure I’d visit again but I would recommend others to give it a go. Ask for a good table that is inside the restaurant (not in the reception area) and you’ll be fine.

Family making Review

By nettlebayguy |

While the atmosphere was most pleasant driven the brouhaha coming from the many guests, the service was prompt and the meat was ravenous. We even got a history lesson from the waiter (six sense and other movies)

Excellent steakhouse

By pmny |

First time visiting Butcher and Singer for dinner. I selected the restaurant based on high rating on Open Table and Zagat. Dinner with two business colleagues was great feedback from everyone was food, drinks and service was fantastic . Nice wine list! Nice small bar in the corner of restaurant on left side as you enter restaurant . Dining room is beautiful I will make it a priority to go back when I’m in Philadelphia again

An experience!

By ANTONINO A |

The place is very quaint. Seeming to go back to the 80s. The excellent meat. Maybe slightly overcooked but of excellent quality

Best dinner in Philly ever- will hit on every visit!

By Wendy C |

Great outdoor dining during covid- The blue gloves are my only issue- yuck... The food was amazing, the service was above average and the price was as expected. Best wedge salad I have ever had- want it every day. The warm biscuits literally melted in your mouth. The steaks were cooked and seasoned spot on. Perfect size for sides and the desserts were large and amazing. Cannot say enough great things

Unbelievable experience

By Glenn R |

I am from Charleston, S.C. Know for it’s great restaurants. But this was probably the best overall experience I have had. From the customer service provided by the manager Bruce to our server Jeremy to the best food ever. We had salad and seafood platter appetizers. Then wonderful steaks and chicken entrees. I suggest trying the truffle butter with the steak.

Business or pleasure, a Philly mainstay and the best steakhouse for the money

By 967ModernArt |

I have been here several times and have never been disappointed. For lunch you can do business or couples, but be prepared for 1.5 hour lunch. For lunch you can get steaks, but the burger is awesome (in the running for best in Philly). Remember, you can get 1/2 size salads. For lunch or dinner, IMHO, B&S has the best ribeye (Delmonico) in town (with the caveat that I’ve never been to Barkley Prime). My wife LOVES the baked Alaskan. Service is always professional. The space is gorgeous, business or pleasure for lunch, but more on the romantic side for dinner.

60th birthday celebration for hubby

By Flag9103 |

We decided to celebrate my husband's 60th at a great steak place, who doesn't like steak and potatoes? Choosing was a little difficult since there is a wide array of great Philly restaurants. But, WOW were we glad we went to B & S! The atmosphere were intimate beautiful and the 40s Billy Holiday music set the stage. Our two daughters joined with their boyfriends enjoyed it with us. Filet, Delmonico steaks...incredible...as well as potato casserole and brussell sprouts. OMG, the biscuits melted in your mouth. The service by Ricky and wine manager were top notch.

Excellent dining experience

By John-Sue Z |

Our family had a wonderful evening at B & S celebrating birthdays and an anniversary. The food was delicious and the service was very good. The waiter Matt was helpful in picking out our food and wine choices and accommodating to split a steak for my husband and me.

Everything was there, but not....

By vactor |

Beautiful place, very elegant, reminds you restaurants of days gone by. We were having a team business dinner and there were six of us in booth that was really meant for five, so my legs were cramped together for several hours uncomfortably. The food was good, salad was as expected for a place like this, sides were the same, good, but nothing spectacular as compared to Morton’s, St. Elmo,s, The Palm, Luger’s, or any other high end steakhouse. The problem came with the steak. It had a lot of gristle in it. I asked the waiter for his suggestion as the best cut and he suggested a strip. The cook had to have known that this cut didn’t meet the standard of a $50 steak. I hacked my way thru it and got about four good bites. The service was good and one thing they do have that kicks butt is those biscuits. Those rocked compared to others steakhouses. But great biscuits does a steakhouse it make.

WOW

This restaurant has it all. It's housed in an old bank building and the interior is just spectacular. The food and ambiance were outstanding. From the filet mignon, to the salads and fresh salmon dishes, would highly recommend a visit to this special restaurant!

You should go.

Very delicious steak house. Excellent service, great cocktails and great steaks. And let’s face it the sides are equally as important and every side we had was fantastic! Loved the home fries side!!!

Mixed Up

By WorldTrvl |

Very disappointed. For main courses we ordered one rack of lamb and one chicken entree. The chicken entree came with two (2) gravy boats on the plate, my lamb did not have any sauce, and there was no explanation when the dish was presented. We didn’t know which gravy was which, and we ended up putting the chicken gravy on the lamb and the lamb gravy on the chicken. Yuck!!! When I complained to the server that two (2) gravy boats were on the same plate and we ended up ruining our meal with the wrong gravy, he simply said “oh, sorry.” Did you ever eat lamb with chicken gravy? The food “might” have been good but their mix up, and their failure to take responsibility, absolutely ruined our meal. Why would you put two (2) gravy boats on the same plate and then not explain anything to us? Plenty of other places to go, as this one is a “miss.”

Blow a wad of cash here or be ready to be treated like you are sitting in coach!

By Justifed321 |

#1 - You have to have a lot of money to eat here. All the drinks are super expensive - a tiny portion of the cheapest wine is $13 and a bottle can run over $1000! Most are $200 - $500 each. If you don’t place a big order for a lot of food at the get go, you will get the snub treatment - the bread is superb, but don’t ask for more than the allotted little biscuit they bestow upon you - it’s almost a sin and takes forever - I had to ask 3 different people 4 times and after our meal was complete, they bring a roll! Meanwhile I saw a whole basket of them up on their counter. The waiter was really snobbish because it was clear we were not going to order a big meal. We had a late lunch and weren’t up to eating $100+ meal each, so we had our biscuit, oyster’s rockafeller - which normally is a real treat - one shell did not have an oyster in it; the other 5 were so full of spices you may as well grab a swath of grass. There was nothing redeeming in this. I saw our neighbor got a $25 “pile” of crab - it was so small they each took two bites and it was gone. They also got a filet and it was just a plain glob of meat on a large plate and a cheap piece of lettuce. So boring. No bearnaise? We opted for the Butcher’s salad - sorry so much stuff in there, meat, garbanzo’s, 25 other flavorful ingredients it tasted very confusing - it was a mess, Neither of us finished our salads. Piped in music in this elegant place - no real piano player - shame. Go outside and poor beggars are sitting around broke and starving. We gave them our salad. This place is pitiful. AVOID.

Excellent.

I went with some good friends last night on our annual Christmas dinner road trip. Fantastic restaurant! The ambience was great and the food was excellent. Butcher and Singer is one top notch establishment. The service here is very professional and friendly. The steaks here are the best and cooked to perfection! I highly recommend going to Butcher and Singer.

Good Burger

By Deep Frese |

Place has a very old-school vibe. You can almost smell the cigar smoke and money. The burger I had was very, though pricey. Dessert was excellent, service was outstanding. I'd give it five stars but for the prices. If you are looking for a good, albeit expensive, steak dinner, I would recommend this joint.

Great celebration place!

By Eric P |

Took our family to celebrate our daughter’s 21st birthday. What a lovely place! The setting inside an old bank building was formal but not stuffy. The wait staff, (particularly Megan) was terrific, making suggestions, always attentive, but not pushy. And the steaks! Well, what can I say, when you come to a steakhouse, the steaks better be tops and these were amazing! The guest of honor had the bone-in filet. It was perfect. My wife had a filet without the bone and my son and I split the porterhouse for two. All were cooked to perfection, came out sizzling hot and were delicious! Sides of creamed spinach and Mac and cheese complimented the meal nicely and our starter of Caesar Salad was just as it should be. The wine steward recommended a very nice bottle that wasn’t going to put price the meal and we were a happy family! Oh, did I forget to mention dessert? The staff brought out a lovely birthday dessert as well as an incredible chocolate cake and key lime pie!! All in all, a wonderful evening with family to celebrate and make memories! We will be back!

Delicious steaks!

By GerryBaron06 |

I had a business lunch with colleagues. I had the Caesar Salad with Steak. The steak was so tender in my mouth. The seasoning was a wonderful complement to the tanginess of the salad. The Chocolate Fudge Cake was amazing - a delight for chocolate lovers. The frosting was rich. I should have had a glass of milk with it. That would have been perfect.
