A trendy hipster bar in one of Portland's coolest suburbs with a 100% vegan menu

By Mark H |

We are always on the lookout for new places to eat when we travel to Portland, Oregon - which happens frequently through the year. One place that has been on my list is Bye and Bye on Alberta Street. It is a real treat to find a bar that serves a totally vegan menu - saves having to ask a lot of questions when ordering our food! The Bye and Bye doesn't look much from the road but it is surprisingly interesting once you get to experience the inside. The interior design is hipster (I am just about too old to know what that is!). The bar has a cool setup with a lot of outdoor seating both in the front and back as well as an open air dining room, which I  assume has some sort of window that will close it off in bad weather. The bar has the laid-back Portland feel to it with tattooed bartenders and limited table service. We love people watching and there was much to see and enjoy in this place. The decor is very eclectic and it took a few minutes to take everything in. When we arrived in the late afternoon the place was packed. There is of course no need to panic as the Bye and Bye does not close until 2 am most days - but we were peckish by this time. As the weather was pretty decent we  decided to sit out in the spacious outside patio area. It feels very secluded despite being next to a busy road - there is a large fence which is softened by tall and elegant bamboo  plants. The menu at the bye and bye is influenced by Southern style cooking and is simple yet delicious. They offer a decent selection of bowls, sandwiches, and entrees—like spaghetti or chili pie—are all available for under ten bucks. As usual we decided to order two main course and split them. To wash our food down we ordered a very tasty pint of porter. We settled for the BBQ Brussel Bowl with BBQ tofu, brussels sprouts and brown rice. For an extra $1 we added avocado. For our second entree we went with the Chili Pie which was made up of a vegan chili, fritos, onions, Tofutti sour cream, non-dairy cheese and nutritional yeast. You cannot get simpler food than this! Gourmet it is not! We enjoyed our meal at Bye and Bye and would definitely go there again. The setting is interesting and if you like watching the people of the Portland diaspora then this is a great place to hang out for an hour or two. As it opens so late it means you can go into town and watch a show and get back in time for a late night supper. The food is basic but the portions are good and the prices are reasonable. They also serve good beer.

Good Food, Didn't Enjoy the Atmosphere

By Zach S |

The food itself was great (I had the spaghetti with meatballs), but I didn't enjoy the atmosphere. It's caught somewhere between a bar and restaurant. You order everything at the bar, get a number, find a seat and wait. There are very few good locations for couples to sit. Plenty of picnic tables and booths, but it can be difficult on a busy night to escape the smoke or the speakers.

Yes! Eat here!

By kinx81 |

Ok, the frito pie. Just yum. Vegan eats so yummy that you truly won't miss the meat or dairy. Lots of outdoor seating both front and back. Big bar inside where you order your food and take a number they give you. Seat yourself. Enjoy. :)

Vegan food galore!

By KOSacramento |

Shared a $10 Cornmeal Tempeh Sandwich. The menu says, “Cornmeal breaded tempeh, remoulade, avocado, tomato, pickled onions, and arugula on a grand central ciabatta roll”. Served with chips and salsa and a $5.00 We also got their garlic-y, very good “Hummus and Chips” appetizer. Shared a light refreshing IPA beer. Slow service but worth the wait. Everything was really tasty.

Casual vegan spot

By Sonya K |

Bye and Bye offers a decent all-vegan menu in a casual, order-at-the-bar restaurant. Outdoor seating in the front and back was a nice option. Recommend visiting during happy hour for specials, including discounted entrees.

Decent drinks, better food and vegan?! Go to this place.

By A H |

I've been this place 3 times since moving to PDX, and its great. Its darkish, the music isn't excessively loud and it seems to get enjoyably busy. The drinks have been good every time and on the food front, just order the Reuben - it great. Then again, I've missed reubens ever since going veggie. Also, the food menu is still good past 10pm, so you don't just have to eat grilled cheese/chips late night. Straight up though, the staff are sound and not at all snooty. The 1st time my girlfriend left her phone and got it back with no problems the next day (before they were open). Next time, the tender fixed me fresh cocktails with no quibbles after a slight mix up. Last night, the tender asked the kitchen to serve us a reuben despite it being past 10pm so I was chuffed. Also I don't quite get the problem about ID'ing, the guy on the door is fine. I'm not a trip advisor-er but I like this place enough to do it.

Local hipster hangout, with outdoor seating in front and in back. You can order microbrews in mason jars, and the menu is tasty, completely vegan, and healthier than the bar food and comfort food that's so prolific around town. The (faux) Meatball sub and Chili pie (veg chili over corn chips with nutritional yeast & vegan sour cream) are my favorites. Beware of crowds, this place is quite popular.

Wonderful Vegan spot for lunch or dinner. Craft beer and patio

By Julie H |

Must stop if you are vegan or love beer. Perfect atmosphere and wonderful staff! We tried spaghetti & meatballs, Tofu noodle salad and the most creamy delicious carrot cake! All vegan and full of flavor.

Hipster-Soaked with an Undertone of Sadness

By Jenn W |

Crappy service, mediocre drinks, and a vegan menu make this hipster-laden bar unbearable. The only reason I stepped foot in this joint was to say hello to friends from out of town . I'm not sure if it's a permanent smell, but the place reeked of patchouli and apathy. The Alberta Street Pub is a much better option. You still get the hipsters, but you at least get good food and service.

Great comfort food on a rainy night

By yusqueya |

We were staying at Caravan just around the corner and knew we wanted to try this bar - we weren't disappointed! After eating our faces off on a 2 week vegan extravaganza, we were looking for some good, simple comfort food for a rainy night, and that's exactly what we got. We hit happy hour too, so had the pretzel knots, spaghetti, a cake for dessert, and 2 drinks each for less than $50. The bartender was friendly, loved the low lighting and atmosphere, and the place was so spacious that we felt like we were alone at the place at our little table, even though it was fairly busy. There may be 'better' and more interesting food options for vegans in Portland, but this place absolutely hit the spot for us and we can't wait to go back.

So tasty

By 44bambi44 |

So we had two different dishes, a sandwich as an Eastern bowl. Both were good but the bowl blew me away...so good... I love "gooey"food and this definitely satisfied... We sat outside and people watched snd hung out with others dining with their dogs.. that always a win win situation for me :) I wish I could eat here everday... so satisfying ;)

Great little trendy vegan bar!

By Jessica K |

Although I'm sure all their food is amazing, go here and pray the have the pretzel field roast on special. DEMAND THEY HAVE PRETLE FIELD ROAST AS IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD. Yes, the bouncer is a pinch terrifying but 3/5 girls at my table said they would obviously take him to bed with them if they got a chance. So that says something.

fun

By Teresa M |

we returned to the bye and bye with friends for brunch yesterday and sat on the front patio....my partner had a pbr, and one of the friends had a mocktail, the rose palmer....next, i had the bye bye beyond patty, my partner had the tofu scramble, the friends had the chile pie, and the sides, black beans and brown rice....we love coming here for all the patio space in front and in back, plus the indoor space is big....the food/drink are great, the staff is real friendly, and accommodating....you have lots of options to choose from...thx so much...

Bowls, Sandwiches, and Ginger Beer

By Librariandonna |

This vegan bar has outdoor seating. I took my daughter here when visiting colleges and she loved it. Now that my son is in Portland visiting college, I brought him as well. He had the weeping tiger sandwich. He said it was spicy with both jalapeno and sriracha. The one drawback was the bread crumbled a bit, so he ended up eating it with a fork. I had the BBQ Brussel bowl with tofu and I chose to add the avocado for an extra $1. This is a BIG bowl. You will not leave hungry. My son also had a ginger beer. Bye and Bye has 2 brands of ginger beer. The bartender recommended the Cock'n'Bull, which was nicely spiced. Bye and Bye has a friendly vibe and great food.

Not that impressed

By Louise2020 |

Review just for the food. . . bottom line. . .doesn't taste good. I've been to a handful of vegetarian and/or vegan restaurants and this one uses a lot of tofu. . .which is fine, but they don't know how to prepare it. Also the fusion is done wrong. . .you can't just put peanut sauce over tofu and call it thai. . .seriouly portland, I expected better. I'm sure the Beer is better but since I'm on a low carb diet I couldn't try it.

Great - even for meat eaters!

By thesarahrich |

I'm a vegetarian and was a little wary of trying this place out (only vegan food here). My sister, who eats meat, raved about it and ended up taking me here in December of 2013. It has a hipster-bar look to the inside - somewhat purposely seedy with garage sale type tables and chairs. The service was GREAT, the food was AWESOME and the drinks were OUTSTANDING. It was a cheap meal that tasted wonderful and was very healthy. I would eat here all the time if I actually lived in Portland - I'm so glad I gave it a shot.

Vegan and Vegetarian heaven; no so much for carnivore friends

By Sitewatcher |

Interesting concept - a vegan bar! There are lots of beer choices, and some inventive cocktails. Relaxed casual atmosphere with more seating than first glance reveals. If it had been warmer, we'd have eaten outside. Went here last night - it was really busy by 6:30pm. My vegetarian companion ordered the "meat"ball sub which she said was delicious, although she also commented that she wished they had the option of dairy cheese instead of just the almond faux cheese, which she didn't care for. I had the bbq tofu with black eyed peas and collards - spicy and tasty with my ginger beer or a pint from the tap. Eclectic clientele- neighborhood locals, queer and straight, bikers, and bike riders, all mingled in a very Portlandia mixup. Very relaxed and casual atmosphere - inexpensive prices and homey feel would bring me back. Great place to stop by after work

Great drinks and good food

By Rachael V |

It happens to be vegan, but you'd never know without being told. Staff is great. Down-sides: It can get loud, and the back patio is a smoking area as is part of the front patio. Dogs welcome on the front patio.

The Eastern Bowl was amazing!

By Harri |

My partner and I had dinner here on our penultimate night in Oregon, last week, before returning to Australia. I'm so glad we found it! We both got the Eastern Bowl with avocado and they were outstanding - really recommend.

Vegan Pub Food

By Margaret B |

Interesting combination but it works. Excellent vegan food with good beer. We all ordered different items and they were all quite good.

Vegan and so tasty

By Steve |

We tried a couple of their dishes - so fresh and tasty. Love their sauces and the overall feel of the restaurant.

Good (Vegan) Food; Atmosphere Not For Everyone

By Zorine R |

My daughter is vegan and during our visit to Portland we were in search of locations that got good reviews for their vegetarian and vegan cuisine. This establishment gets good reviews on other "rating" websites and the food IS good. I had spaghetti and meatballs. It was served with garlic bread. If I hadn't known the meatballs were vegan, I would've never guessed. They had good Italian sausage flavor but were not too spicy. The portion size was good for me but others with heartier appetites might have considered it too meager. My daughter had the Thai sandwich with fries and she devoured her meal. Her portion sizes were larger. The tempe on the sandwich -- which I tried -- was fried well, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and well-marinated. The sandwich had pickled sweet onions that really complimented. I had a beer; my daughter had a mixed drink. Tab: $30 without tip. That said, the atmosphere was a bit off, at least for us. We arrived after 8pm and the bouncer checked our IDs because no children are permitted to enter the premises after 8pm. I didn't have a problem with this -- I would rather the bouncer check everyone than to randomly select those whom he thinks are too young (my daughter looks like she might be too young to drink...) Upon entering we found the music a bit too loud, the room dark and the decor (um) urban gritty (?). Additionally, there are no waiters. One must go to the bar to order and we had difficulty getting anyone's attention. Even after we did, the bartender seemed more attentive to his "regular" customers than with us "newbies." We were not tended to in the order in which we arrived. You will be given a choice to "pay as you go" (that is, to pay at the bar as you order and before your food even arrives) or leave your credit card information for the final tab. I opted to pay for everything as we ordered rather than to leave credit card information with restaurant employees whom I did not know. As we waited, unable to tolerate the music volume, we opted to go outside. The smoking and nonsmoking tables are side-by-side, so we got greater quiet (we could still hear the music, it was loud enough to hear through the walls) but smoky. Okay, so what do we expect for a bar on a Friday night? And the food WAS delicious, truly. We got to/from the pub using public transport. It is completely doable but the bus stop is a few blocks from the restaurant and walking in this neighborhood at night might be a bit intimidating for those who are less accustomed to city living.

Still Good

By Unwilted |

Was here several years ago and absolutely loved it. Had a chance to re-visit and it is still a worthy destination in Portland. The drink prices were reasonable and the place seemed a bit less crowded than it was in the past, which is a good thing -- still plenty full but at least we could get a place to sit. I got the meatball sub and actually found it just okay -- a bit more like just a mash of tomato sauce and vegan meat. The others in my group loved their food, though. Great to have a semi-healthy option in a pub.

Best Vegan Restaurant!!!

By Arezo S |

Bye and Bye was recommended by a YouTuber (JennyMustard). I am so glad that we decided to dine here for dinner. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich- which was so so delicious. My boyfriends sister ordered the BBQ Brussel Bowl - I tried her bowl and that was just as delicious. My favorite though would have to be what my boyfriend ordered which was the Weeping Tiger Sandwich. It literally tasted like chicken wings in a sandwich. Loved the drinks, atmosphere and service was outstanding. Only regret is that we did not have a chance to go back again during our stay in Portland. If you're ever visiting Portland you must eat here. Even if you're not vegan I'm confident to say you'll still enjoy the food.

Great vegan food

By JasperMarks |

Ordered meatball sub and collared greens for lunch. Incredible. Have eaten here several times in the past few weeks. Always good.

A relaxing bar hangout.

By Tokyo Shirokuma |

Simple vegan bar food, loud rock, good cocktails (especially the gin lime one), and friendly service. Had a good evening there with friends getting drunk and eating healthily. Vegan meatball sandwich was fantastic.

It was okay.

By Aaron J |

I would go again if those that I was with wanted to but I wouldn't make it a point to go on my own. It was low key, casual and fun. The bartenders prioritized their friends and regulars in a way that made us wait at least 10minutes to get our drinks in a partly empty bar. They weren't rude but it was a bummer to place a drink order and have to wait forever because their friends just walked in the door and they served them first. The liquor poor is strong so that made up for it :)

Hipster Haven Has Little to Offer

By Jenn W |

Crappy service, mediocre drinks, and a vegan menu make this hipster-laden bar unbearable. The only reason I stepped foot in this joint was to say hello to friends from out of town . I'm not sure if it's a permanent smell, but the place reeked of patchouli and apathy. I ate something called the weeping tiger sandwich. It was full of processed something or other and tasted stale. They should rename the sandwich crying cougar 'cause that's what this 37 year old was described as by a handle bar mustache wielding bro on the patio after consuming it. The Alberta Street Pub or Radio Room are a much better option. You still get the hipsters, but you at least have good food and service.

friend recommendation

By Ready2Travl2 |

I'm not a vegetarian, but my friend recommended we go here. Surprised how busy it was on Saturday midday. It was low key and casual. Atmosphere is a bit confused – this place can’t make up its mind between a bar and restaurant. Folks working inside were ok though seemed distracted and I felt like I was bothering (you order at the bar). G&Ts a little on the weaker side but I paid $5 so I guess I shouldn’t complain. Food appearance not my cup of tea, but flavor is fine. Seemed like a popular neighborhood spot, my vegetarian friend really likes it. I suppose I would go again if those I’m with wanted to but I won’t go out of my way to come here on my own. I'd say a generous 4 I suppose.

Fun and eclectic

By Sophiea T |

trendy, casual and full of hipsters- this place is a mecca for vegan and vegetarians alike. great food, reasonable prices and decent drinks,

Will always hold a special place in my heart...

By RET2012 |

This place opened the same week I moved to Portland and I viewed that as wonderful serendipity because the space is awesome, the food is excellent (all or mostly vegan I believe), and the drinks are good. I moved away, and during my recent visit in Portland this was my first stop. They've expanded their front patio and back patio since I was last there, and all changes are excellent. This is the place you go to hang out with good friends (or a date) and enjoy some conversation while getting a little tipsy. Great location on Alberta too, and walking distance to many other places.

Best veggie meatball sub ever!

By Jpeacelovecircus |

A vegan pub with delicious N.W beers! Their veggie meatball sub is one you will crave! The food is reasonably priced and the environment is cozy and nice. Indoor and outdoor with a smoking patio makes it something nice for everyone!

Vegan pub

By Margaret F |

It's a friendly, lively pub with tables at the back. Casual service (we were unclear whether to seat ourselves, which we did, when no-one came to us; and whether to wait to place an order, which we didn't, since we would have been there all evening, probably.) So I think the protocol is find a place to sit, reserve it with coats and go to the bar to place your order. The food came promptly. It's all vegan comfort food. I had chunks of marinated tofu over brown rice, with perfectly cooked broccoli and a sauce on top. The portions were way too big (excellent value at under ten bucks) but they supply boxes for tomorrow's breakfast.

Perfect for our vegan diner

By janicepk |

There was an excellent selection of vegan entrees and good draft beers. Our party enjoyed the reuben and tempeh sandwich. Very cool Vibe throughout the whole restaurant. It was fun to be in the Alberta neighborhood. Baked pretzels with mustard or the bomb.

Great spot for great beer and vegan food

By Brion H |

We actually live very close to here. We go 1-3 times per week. They serve food late and they have some of the best vegan food. We really love the desserts as well. Cool staff and hip crowd. Check it out if you're visiting Portland. We'll probably see you there.

ByeandBye is not ByeBye

By gogovinda108 |

A friend and I dropped in here mid week (yes they are open 12pm-2:30am) for lunch! We ordered Eastern bowls, which was not over seasoned and chuck full of veggies, tofu and rice with a lite ginger sauce. Staff was friendly and welcoming and place was clean. Plenty of street parking, but limited for onsite parking. The reason I deducted a point was we were charged a dollar to substitute a cheaper item in place of a more expensive one, which I think is the difference between a four and five rating.

YUM! All good

By wherewithalicia |

I got hummus and a grilled cheese. It was so good. I've had vegan grilled cheeses before, but this place gets it right. I would love to try everything on their menu! Also a great vibe and plenty of space. Cool art on the walls as well.

Awsome drinks and food

By MikeFDonaldson |

Vegan food done right. Fun and innovative vegan food choices and a full bar. It's never too busy to get what you need quickly.

Love vegan/vegetarian food, but food was just okay.

By jings89 |

I was so excited to try this restaurant/bar especially since it's vegan/vegetarian. The atmosphere was fun and the outdoor seating was really nice. But my food was just okay...nothing great. I ordered the Bye and Bye drink as well and it was more sour than sweet which was surprising since it was supposed to have a lot of peach flavor in it. Overall, my experience was just okay.

Huge, strong drinks and tasty vegan fare

By Bryan H |

I've never been to this establishment, and arrived for a late lunch and drinks around 2:30 p.m. on a Friday. Some people were hanging out, but not many. We were there for roughly two hours, and by the time we left, the place was filling up. The cornmeal tempeh sandwich I had was tasty! And my friend's bowl was also good by all reports. I don't usually drink, but when I do ... I don't like small dribbles for eight bucks. This place was for me! A big mason jar's worth of the Bye and Bye drink. It was strong, and warning ... for the rest of the evening after I left, I wasn't good for much of anything ... except for sleeping! The service was nothing to write home about, but the seating choices were numerous and there was a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor choices. (We sat part of the time indoors and part of the time out of doors.) This is one of my top new favorite places in Portland! Keep up the high quality, guys!

Daughters birthday! Drink time and social opportunity!

By Heather Dawson Schrock |

We all ordered drinks and some vegan lunches!! Very nice bar and vibe! Birthday all weekend thing! Love the music and vibes again!

Nice Vegan Pub

By pandiland |

This place is great. They have a killer vegan meatball sub that everyone needs to try at least once. My father is an avid carnivore but I got him to order this and he loved it. My friend ordered a sandwich that had grilled tofu on it, I don't remember the name but it was delicious. The back patio is nice, even if it's cold they have heaters everywhere. Fabulous cocktails too.

excellent vegan

By Teresa M |

we haven't been to the bye and bye for a couple of yrs, and returned for lunch...i had a miller, and my partner had a hot toddy...next, i had the spaghetti and veggie balls, and she had the brussel sprouts, and cornmeal tempeh sandwich, plus a cup of lentil/curry....the bartender and chef were real friendly and fun!...the food was so excellent!..the decor and cozyness is homey, and love coming here.....thx so much!...

Really fun bar and great vegetarian food.

By Thesehappymoments |

Really cute bar that offers an array of vegetarian small plates. The atmosphere is really casual and friendly. My girlfriend and I went there to have drinks and dinner and had a great time.

Fun Vegetarian Restaurant Off the Beaten Path

By DT355 |

My wife and I visited this restaurant at the suggestion of a bicycle tour guide. It was a short drive from the tourist areas but that gave us a chance to get out to see a different part of the city. It was busy but not overly loud and we had a good choice of tables. The crowd was mixed with different ages and enough hipsters to feel like you are really in Portland. There was good seating both indoors and out. The music was good classic 60's and 70's. You order at the bar and seat yourself. The staff was friendly but not overly attentive. The menu was entirely vegetarian with an emphasis on rice bowls. The food was delicious, creative, and inexpensive. It came out quickly. I would strongly recommend a visit.

Excellent diversity of healthy good that was super delicioso!

By Todd V |

The grilled bbq tofu, black eye peas and collard greens was phenomenal. The fresh salsa was from scratch and identical how I make mine I learned in culinary school.

Nice Outdoor Seating

By joefromcincy1961 |

We only stopped in for drinks, but loved the rear outdoor seating with bamboo all around. There is also front outdoor seating and a large indoor area. A good place to stop for a cold one on a hot day.

Exceptional Vegan Deliciousness---seriously good food!

By Jodi R |

We were in the Portland area for an extended weekend, and based on reviews, wanted to try this restaurant. It's a bit dark inside, so be prepared for that. I couldn't get great photos of the food because of the lighting, so no food pictures included with this review. Lot of seating indoors, and great outdoor seating. Be forewarned, there is smoking permissable on the outdoor patio (even though some of the tables are marked "no smoking"), which drifts over, so we opted to sit indoors to avoid it. Loved the vibe. Friendly, warm, fun place to hang out and meet friends. Very "Portland" like. You order at the bar area, and they provide you a number. When your order is ready servers find your number to deliver your food. Unique menu items, wonderful food combinations, and absolutely delicious vegan food. If you are not vegan, it's also a perfect place to take friends, as they do vegan food really, really well. My husband had the Samurai Bowl. If you like spice (which we do), this is the perfect combination of flavors and the right amount of heat. It's one of few menu items we didn't add spice to it. Very good. I had the Weeping Tiger Sandwich (yummy)! and we split a cup of the vegan chili. Everything we ordered, we savored, including the beer. Visit this place. Try different things. Explore the food...it's so worth it!

Great Vegan Food

By Y7988JTpaulb |

Had a great meal at Bye and Bye. Brilliant range of vegan food; very good quality and value. My friends who are not Vegan enjoyed the food, too.

VEGAN HEAVEN

By kalongwong |

I didn't know this was a vegan restaurant. However I had already eaten so I enjoyed their cider instead and that was excellent. The bartenders are super cool! Interior is funky as well, next time I'll have to try the food! My friends got tofu sandwiches and they looked god!

Great atmosphere, great food and drink, great barkeeps, big smiles

By LomalindaMidwest |

Coxy, yet sleek, friendly to meat eaters and non, great diversity of customers, smiling and hard working bartenders, obvious pride of ownership, lively and eclectic music, fantastic drinks with imagination and the best art I've seen anywhere in years, Well done. Can get crowded....smoking on the back patio,,,..seating out front and you can bring critters. Doesn't get much better than this. Worth making a special trip.

Horrible

By John H |

This place is the worst stop we made in Portland. Food was cold. My wife saw a bug on her tomato and asked nicely for a replacement tomato (not a replacement sandwich) and they never even came back. My wife doesn't even want to come back to the city! Zero stars.

Great service. Great food. Vegan or Vegetarian, full bar

By Ashlandbuck |

My husband just had chips and "the best salsa ever". I had a cornmeal crusted tempeh sandwich on ciabatta and I liked it very much. I like the room too, and the enormous portraits of Evel Kinevel and James Mason. This page won't allow me to click to rate so I just say 4.

A vegan pub

By Barbara B |

It's so unusual to me to find a vegan restaurant let alone a vegan pub. Portland is a vegans haven. We were all thrilled by the variety of choices available and we shared and enjoyed our three entrees.

Great Portland vegan/vegetarian bar

By DCVegan |

The food is good for vegans and our open-minded friends! ;-) There is a terrific happy hour. Beer selection is fine, but their mixed drinks are the stars. I had something called a "Lefty's Prayer": beet-infused tequila, rosemary syrup, and lime juice - a fun margarita style drink. It was so, so good. Getting there by public transit is a bit of a hike, since it's in the north part of the city, but definitely worth it. I would go again - and again, and again.

Get the Frito Pie!

By girlwithagypsyheart |

I crave their Frito Pie even on the hottest days! Located on Alberta, there's plenty of other fun things to see within walking distance too!

Trendy cool vibe

By Nikki D |

Stopped for a drink at Bye and Bye. Actually I ordered their signature drink by the same name. Made with peach vodka, what more do you need to know? Hip place.

Mix and Not Match

By Marshall L |

Bye and Bye is located on Alberta in NE Portland on the corner of 10th street. With our son leading the way five of us entered this saloon and promptly headed to the bar to place our orders, for food not for drinks.(We were informed that bars in Portland that serve alcoholic drinks must also serve food.) All the dishes we ordered were vegetarian bowls-in a saloon no less. Drinks could be ordered at the same time, nonalcoholic and alcoholic, as the meal order. We chose to sit outside in a covered patio area and the bowls we ordered were brought to us after a wait of about 10 minutes. To a person, all the food we had was flavorful, pleasing to the eye and satisfying. While Portland has many eateries, Bye and Bye is one to which we would return.

Biased vegan, but glugg, glugg, nom, nom

By n joy lutton |

I *heart* they Bye and Bye SO MUCH. In fact, this vegan bar was one of the reasons why I moved to Portland from Seattle. I love the amazing portraits and Evel Kenevel, the gruff bartenders or adorable lady bartenderesses, and the tasties and boozies. The drinks come in mason jars, and the food is the kind that sticks to your gut, Try the frito pie.

Love love love!

By NoosaChic |

This is my favourite place to eat in Portland. Everything is Vegan and so delicious. The spaghetti and Meatballs tastes just like I make at home. The bowls are really yummy and filling and the Ruben sandwich is so good it's from another planet. Great cocktails and other drinks. Bonus is, you can take your under 21 friends up till 9pm.

Perfect Portland Pub

By francilg |

Enjoy delicious vegan comfort food and monster mason jar cocktails with the hipster locals. Heat lamps made the patio a nice place to sit on a dry winter night; we felt like we were plopped into an episode of "Portlandia" in all the good ways.

All Vegan Pub/Restaurant! Gotta check it out

By Nika C |

The atmosphere is very "Portland" hipster ish vibes, there are outdoor patios as well as indoor seating which is comfortable and has a great ambience. All vegan makes it easy, healthy and amazing quality of food & flavors are off the charts! Gotta try the Tempeh Cornbread Sandwich. Friendly Staff, Order at the bar and make yourself comfortable. I would definitely come here again

Great venue with good vegan options

By Eric D |

On a sunny day in August there is nothing better than outside seating with good food and company. Bye and Bye delivers with inside/outside/covered patio spaces to satisfy where you want to sit. The food was fresh and flavorful and there were many vegan options to choose from. For dessert, the vegan cheesecake can't be beat.

Always A Vegan Knock Out

By JasperMarks |

Very busy tonight, but just the same they were able to put together our to-go order in short fashion. The food is wonderful. Ordered Eastern Bowls and three different sides. Everything very yummy. I take the food to go because this place gets really noisy; and sometimes I just want to relax at home and watch a movie.

Great vegan bowls and sandwiches

By Daniel S |

Quick stop on our way through Portland to Seaside. The description of the food was right on. Great flavor and choices from bowls to sandwiches. It is not common to get very good Rueben or Meatball sandwiches but these were excellent. A good choice of craft beers as well. Service good. Order at the bar and food is delivered to your table or the patio. Looks like it is a great hangout for after work as well.

The food at Bye and Bye is amazing. I don’t really have a review aside from that. If you want to order food at a place you’ve never been and say to yourself “hey this is really really good” then I recommend dining here.

Great Vegan Food and Pub

By WWTreesh |

Relaxed environment and service, nice outdoor seating. It is definitely dark inside, but does the hip Portland vibe very well. The prices are good and the flavors are excellent, all the food I tasted was delicious, and they had a few quality beers on tap at a good price. Overall a nice place to hang out and have good eats if you like to eat vegan.

Fantastic Food

By Unwilted |

This place is more like a cafe during the day and more like a traditional, hip bar with food at night. It gets very crowded at night. The vegan food, however, is absolutely fantastic. I will never pass through Portland without stopping here. You won't regret going here.

Great food, rude service

By Theresa M |

Not vegan but had some friends from out of town that are so thought we'd try it out. Loved the food! However worst customer service I have experienced in Portland. Orders are taken at the bar. The bartender that night was incredibly rude, rushed and made it seem like an inconvenience to answer a simple question on one of the dishes. It was a Sunday evening and not busy at all so the rudeness was really uncalled for. The serving staff was not much better, throwing down the food without a word. Really disappointed, since we enjoyed the food but lack of customer service ruined our time.

Funky and Friendly

We were looking for a quick bite when we arrived late to Portland. Bye and Bye offered up fabulous and plentiful vegetarian food and delicious cocktails at a reasonable priice. The atmosphere was casual and fun with indoor and outdoor seating.

When I get to cravin' Bye & Bye, nothing else will do!

I go there every couple months. It's like going home. The only reason the atmosphere got 4 stars instead of 5 is that they took the jukebox out, but the outdoor seating area is still wonderful. The food is like love. Juicy, saucy, delicious love. You want to know what's good? Everything. I often have something with BBQ sauce, and always get the Brussels which I share with my dining companion as long as they share their greens with me! I met one of the owners, a gent and such a sweet fellow, which manifests in great energy in the space. They have good wine and beer which is enough to attract folks interested in just drinks, but the food is not to be missed.

Great Bar - Great Artwork

By December C |

This is a great neighborhood bar. It has nice outdoor seating out front and a nice back patio that is covered. The bar menu is vegan friendly and very good. The artwork on the walls by Juan Casas is stunning and the bathroom murals by Brett Superstar are outstanding!

This is currently my favorite place right now. The food is amazing and the drinks are great.

we came back here for lunch yesterday with a friend, on a rainy day, and sat indoors.....it was busy...i had a pbr, and my partner had a hot toddy on a cold/rainy day......next, i had the beyond burger veggie patty, and she had the chili pie, plus a side of potatoes, and almond cake....our friend had the tofu lettuce tomato sandwich......the food/drink was great, and the staff is always excellent....he is funny and charming....we love coming here indoors or outside and the ambiance is nice and relaxing...thx

Wait, that was all vegan?

If you're stopping by Portland and want to see the bar scene, this place is a must. While most of the Alberta area is fun, you will want to check this place out, vegan or not. I've been here so many times over the years and the quality has never faltered. I have come here for happy hour, dinner, drinks, late night, on a date all throughout the year....Where to start...So make sure to order your drink and food at the bar when you get there, you may need to give some courteous elbows to make your way, because it gets crowded, but regardless, the bar tenders are pretty good about making sure everyone gets served. All of the food is amazing, the first few times i came here, I had no idea it was all vegan food. They offer full vegan plates as well, collard greens, beans, rice, tofu (if you're into that). I have tried a lot of the things on the menu and i cant say i have been disappointed. My go-to item is the grilled cheese, served with chips, it rivals the grilled cheese grill next door, but i have also would mention the meatball sandwich, just delicious. A newer item they added was the pretzel, again, hats off. If you can't decide on what you want to eat, you can order items a la carte, like black eyed peas, beans, collard greens, rice etc. I always check the desert menu to see what kinds of items they tackle a la vegan, quite impressive i must say. As far as drinks go, I would usually start my night right with a Bye-n-Bye, couldn't tell you the ingredients, but by the time its gone you definitely feel like you got $8 worth. Then i'd switch to one of the many revolving local micro brews they have on tap. Recently in the summer they started offering slushies. One day it was margarita, one day it was a basil-gin type. so refreshing on the increasingly hot summer days in the PNW. Outdoor seating in the front and the back with plenty of seats inside as well. Last point I would add is how good looking the staff is, the little blond, the jesus-barbie bartender(seriously look for him), even the hipsters. All-in-all, its gets crowded, loud and fast paced as the night rolls on, but once you sit down, the food is fast and you really feel relaxed.

We enjoyed our stop here. We had great service and delicious food and great beers. Will definitely return next year.

Bad experience!

When I arrived and had my ID checked, I was denied entry because they didn't accept foreign driving licences - this is the excuse I was given and the doorman said is due "manager's policy". Very disappointing.

Delicious vegan food

This place has a really fun, easy going atmosphere. I loved that we just ordered at the counter. It was nice to eat outside. The entire menu is vegan! We decided to eat here for that reason. We were impressed with the food. It is also a bar, but we don’t even drink. I recommend this establishment.
