Seevice and food ok.

By Adam P |

Nice French restaurant. We ordered crab cakes and salomin and chicken plus crem bruke for a dezert. It was ok. Waiter was very kind. We received a few extras to taste. Prices resonable.

Christmas Brunch!

By Alexander F |

Excellent French Restaurant housed in the Sofitel Downtown Chicago. Superb taste, we had the special Christmas Menu, and it was wonderful. all the items tasted very good, the temperature of the food was perfect, the flavors of the meat, sauces was superb, everything was excellent. Also the service was exceptional, very professional, polite, as it should be.!

It does not get much better

By Keith S |

In Chicago for my annual Christmas shopping trip and I had not been to this restaurant in more than three years. I went for the tasting menu and added the wine paring. Wowza. It does not get much better. Each course was perfectly cooked and presented. I am not a fan of sweet wines unless they’re served with dessert but the paring was spot on. My server was friendly, and attentive with a perfect transition between courses. I will definitely be back.

Never Disappoints

By Traveling Teddi |

We met friends in Chicago for a long weekend and returned to Cafe des Architectes. Always top notch preparation, the food did not disappoint. Our fishing friend was delighted with his choice of the halibut declaring it awesome. There was a slight misunderstanding over glasses vs bottles of wine and we wondered why the server had removed both the red and white. Our server took care of the problem professionally and promptly to our satisfaction.

Birthday celebration

By tchua_12 |

Food is very good, don't miss out with the cheese and meat platter as a starter. Prompt service and good customer service.

Very stylish, part of Sofitel Hotel. Dress up to come here.

By Tanya G |

Just being there makes you feel like you are high-class. Great real French pastries, great ambiance. I have been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails, and I found lighting at dinner to be too dim. Great for breakfast or cocktails. Try their tiny dessert samplers ($1.50 each, at least they used to be).

Just desserts!

By Barry A |

Only came for their fabulous desserts. Great wait staff, fabulous pastry chef who does a turn and tune on youtube. Fun time.

Perfect Breakfast - Perfect Lunch

By LeTerrible |

Staying at a hotel when you are in town for work is not the same as a vacation. When you come back to the Hotel after work tired, and you want a great meal but don't want to travel far...and you learn that the hotel restaurant is one of the best in Chicago, you are very happy! I took breakfast at the restaurant which was reasonable for the quality and the quantity of what they served. The staff for breakfast and lunch was exemplary and generous. The lunch was the best meal of the trip. I sat on the patio watching the city walk by as they started with a basket of artisinal breads, a roasted tomato dip and olives and butter fresh from Normandy. Wine by the glass had a great selection and I had a viogner from Chateauneuf. The soup was a ginger carrot topped with chestnut that was amazing. That day they offered a fresh salmon salad over orzo with an amazing vinegar-caper dressing. The malt ball dessert is a 'MUST'. decadent and delicious. This restaurant is a must.

Superb meals

By andremodesto |

I went there three times while staying at Sofitel. The ambient is elegant, the food is superb and so is the service. I definitely recommend it.

Very good breakfast option

By ChiefWolf |

The restaurant at the Sofitel hotel in Chicago is excellent for breakfast. They have a great assortment of dishes, different options, obviously including French cuisine choices, and excellent coffee (I prefer French press). I've not tried it for lunch or dinner, but its very good for breakfast for sure.

Good-natured waiters

By Cheryl H |

We had an early dinner at this Sofitel eatery. Not quite hungry enough for full meals, we snacked on salads, truffle fries, and dessert--with a couple of drinks along the way. Our waiter was patient and pleasant about this evasion of the Main Course in favor of creme brûlée and chocolate cake. Wonderful cocktails, beautifully prepared. The venue is smallish but nicely divided into three zones so that each party feels somewhat private. We enjoyed the evening a lot.

Salmon cooked pefectly

By HelenaGuerra |

Came for a late dinner after arriving at the hotel. Perfectly cooked salmon with crispy skin. Good sides and some wine. Just perfect. Service is excellent.

One of the good Sofitels

By Richard C |

I have to admit that I have not alway had the best experiences while staying in Softel but this on is certainly among the good ones. Relatively spacious rooms, excellent breakfast (but a la carte only). Conveniently located in the Near North district in a busy shopping area, it is a short cab ride away from the Loop and the financial district. Staff were friendly and helpful. I would happily stay there again!

Loved it!

By 275GTS |

We were staying at the hotel and this inviting restaurant was great on the frigid Chicago day! Inspired: the atmosphere Service: excellent! Food: loved our breakfast Atmosphere: trendy and fun Return: yes even without staying at the hotel Discovered: reviews on TA - thanks

One very special place for a hotel restaurant

By Ross S |

I am always hesitant to eat at the hotels I stay in. I am usually very disappointed. Not this time. They were offering a Prix fix menu and we both decided to give it a try.

Very slow service and just okay food

By Mi_Biju |

I kind of have an issue with restaurants with limited menus, I often find them a bit pretentious. When I see them most of the times I want to walk away. Since this was a business dinner I didn't have such chance. There is nothing particularly bad about the food. I had a salmon which was okay and my desert was quite interesting - olive oil gelato. This could have been a good dinner however the service was so painfully slow that it was enough to rule out this place forever. To make matters worse the restaurant was very empty so basically there was no plausible reason for the delay. I'm glad I went there for dinner in my first night and didn't fall in the trap of trying their breakfast. With that kind of service I would certainly be late for work.

Excellent Breakfast

By TarnaH |

We had breakfast here on Valentine's Day. It was one of the best breakfasts that I have ever had. The french press coffee was outstanding. They offer a variety of fresh bakery items. My husband had the steak and eggs. The filet was perfectly cooked. The restaurant ambiance was contemporary and inviting. Service was good. Great way to start off the day.

Excellent seafood omelette for breakfast

By BequiaWhispers |

We stayed in the hotel (Sofitel) and had two breakfasts in this restaurant. I can highly recommend the seafood omelette - fat, juicy, and with a lobster bisque sauce on the side. Fabulous, and on the list again for next time!

Good hotel food

By wahnee86 |

Good food, excellent service that's very attentive and delicious bread options makes for a solid hotel restaurant.

Coffee and eggs

By FastGirl39 |

We always include breakfast when we stay at Sofitel. The room is lovely and bright. Coffee is french press and delish. Pastry basket is very tempting and I always enjoy fresh croissants when we eat here. Fresh fruit and eggs, great way to start the day! Service great.

Lovely restaurant, great outdoor seating and a very interesting menu

By Jeanne |

We were staying at the Sofitel, so for the first night, I made reservations at this restaurant, which is part of the hotel. When we were seated outside, the waiter brought 2 complimentary glasses of an excellent champagne. The champagne was provided because I had become a member of the Accor Hotels rewards club. Also because of this, we received 25% off the cost of our dinner. The menu had a nice variety of options. I'm gluten-intolerant and the waiter was very knowledgeable about which items to avoid, which isn't always the case. I had the duck breast and my friend had the chicken Ballantine, both of which were very tasty. It was a warm evening, and we were enjoying watching all the people out on the street, without the noise level being to much. Even though the restaurant is definitely upscale in its offerings and pricing, having 25% deducted from the bill was very helpful.

Breakfast for 4 days

By Harriet11C |

I had breakfast for 4 days and the best part was they had set menu for their breakfast. The potato chips that they served was too good to be true.

Amazing!

By Alina M |

We stayed at the Sofitel and had breakfast and lunch at this hotel and I can't get over how delicious and amazing everything was! One of my all time favorite spots now!

Stay here

By Cindy S |

This is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff gets an A++ for service and attention to details- I loved everything about it-the restaurant was very good- we had breakfast every morning there and dinner one night

Breakfast on Gold Coast

By Moira F |

Hard to find a good restaurant open for breakfast on the Gold Coast. Fresh OJ, great French pressed coffee. Had salmon and bagel- very good. Service was very good.

Charming Hotel

By Tinna Q |

Excellent facilities and staff, great location for nearby shops, restaurants and tourist haunts. The hotel is located a few blocks from the shore front however I had two views of Lake Michigan from my room.

Beautiful Plates

By Watsufizzi |

Very nice and attentive staff fulfilled every request we had. Really good cocktails. Plates were beautiful, and generally very tasty. I found my veggies on my main, and the garnish on my starter to be slightly under seasoned. I also had a sweet bread salad, and one of the sweet breads was incorrectly prepared, which left me with that unpleasant chewy stuff which I had to awkwardly get out of my mouth and leave on the plate. If it wasn't for those things, it would have been easily 5/5! Would definitely go back!

Fine hotel near magnificent mile

By BookbuyerMelbourne |

Fine upmarket hotel in downtown Chicago just off the Magnificent mile. We stayed in one of their suites which was very spacious. Not much of a view from the 23rd floor but still quite nice. Excellent bathroom and the Nespresso machine was a nice touch (I think they only have these in the suites as I saw one of the regular rooms which did not have a Nespresso machine). The fitness facilities are quite primitive. Unfortunately the hotel doesn't have a swminning pool which was somewhat of a shame on a sweltering summers day. The gym was also quite cramped. Overall a fine visit without being memorable.

Good but small

By Grody |

The dishes looks very nice almost like piece of art but...it was to small to eat. In conclusion, I prefer good and enough to feel full but of course it's just my point of view.

Spectacular failure, a shame given the pasty pastries.

By Ryan D |

We ate here twice for breakfast over labor day, while staying at the Sofitel. We have eaten here nearly every time we visit Chicago. The saddest part about the whole thing is I booked the Bed and Breakfast combo as with my previous visits here we absolutely loved the pastries and breakfast- it was almost like being in Paris. Unfortunately while the food remained excellent the service was spectacularly atrocious. It wasn't that the wait staff wasn't trying hard- it was clear they were overextended. Examples:Over 10 minutes before someone brought us coffee or beverages of any kind after we had been sat, nearly 30 minutes before they even took our order. One breakfast didn't they even fill our water glasses. No one asked how the food was, they were too busy.We had to specifically ask for bread both mornings. I specifically asked for ketchup for my eggs, I think I'd still be waiting for it, if my wife didn't get up to get me some. Food was dropped off like a drive-by. One time/one morning you'd say the staff were off their game, this was BOTH mornings we ate there. The poor waiters ran around like hummingbirds drinking cafe lattes. This fiasco was clearly management's fault for poor planning and staffing. I would have given them a "pass" but we had terrible service 2 mornings in a row, so unfortunately they were unable to learn from their mistakes of understaffing the restaurant the first morning. The appropriate thing would have been actually to sit less tables and make the wait to sit walk-ins long- but that ultimately would be less revenue- you see where I'm going with this. It was so bad my wife would rather not stay at the Sofitel, why not when we could stay at the 4 Seasons and have a great breakfast with stellar service? I hate writing negative reviews, I really do, and probably don't write enough of them. I like to write about areas for improvement, but we were devastatingly disappointed in something we had been looking forward to for months. Sounds crazy- but after you have the bread and pastries there- you'll know why we missed it so. I did speak with a manager about my disappointment. Unfortunately since I had paid for breakfast as part of my "package" he had little to offer other than "sorry we weren't expecting to be so busy on a long holiday weekend. Its usually dead." Really?? Expecting not to be busy on a long holiday weekend in Chicago? The mind boggles... If the service continues to stay this poor he'll probably be right. Food:Excellent-by the time it finally arrived. Have you ever had such bad service, your frustration ruined tasty food? Me neither usually, now I have.

Lunch menu is very reasonable price wise and the food was very good

By flobow3648 |

I ate here twice while attending a conference. The food is good but pricey. However the best value can be had here for lunch where there is a small but reasonable menu.

Excellent

By JohnB1954 |

Service was excellent and so was the food. The menu had some very different options and we were rewarded by choosing some options that we would not otherwise consider. The tasting plate was excellent with some quite different flavours. The duck was melt in mouth experience with great complementary flavours. The pork was also very tender with some great flavours coming through. The baked Alaska was a fitting end to the meal. The pinot noir and excellent accompaniment. Overall an excellent highlight for our Chicago trip.

Modern atmosphere and food.

By Paul M |

I met a friend and her daughter for a delightful lunch. We were greated with Bonjour and the service continued to be pleasant and attentive. We all had salads "entre size" and they were quite tasty. For the past 3.5 years we have walked past this restaurant/cafe that is part of the Sofitel Watertower, but never ventured in. I'm Happy that I finally had the experience and with great company, how could we go wrong.

Beautiful hotel, great service, excellent restaurant

By Mark S |

Terrific hotel in every way. Beautiful rooms, well lit, great service. The restaurant is excellent, particularly for a hotel (which often have poor and expensive restaurants). The food is excellent and the price is quite reasonable.

Wonderful Stay

By Regina C |

First of all, the aroma when you walk in, just draws you in!!!! The staff is so welcoming. Our room was phenomenal and very comfy. The onsite workout facility was a huge plus for us and even provided fruit (apples and bananas) on a daily basis. The location is super convenient; we were to walk everywhere from our hotel. I highly recommend this hotel.

Fantastic Brunch

By MarkAndrewsRugby |

We were Guests of a different Hotel but were told about the Bread Products, Patisserie, and being the Hotel is French owned we were so happy with the Brunch and the menu. Would have loved to have stayed the also, maybe next time!!!!!!

Good food - service could be better

By Diane K |

We are in the neighborhood - so stop by here for meals on occasion. The food is very good - but given the smaller size of their dining room - I think the service could be better. When we were here for breakfast, our food was delivered - but I noticed that my fork was bent. Our waiter never stopped by to check in on us, until I had eaten my whole meal with a bent tong on my fork. The breads for breakfast are quite tasty - especially the croissants and the raisin rolls.

Excellent quality price ratio in an ideal location

By Maria B |

Excellent food in a nicely decorated restaurant. Service exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely go back!

Worst experience ever

By Gabriela C |

Terrible service. We had lunch yesterday and wait for more than 40 minutes for the waiter to come. Today we tried to have breakfast , the coffee came and after more than a half hour waiting for our plate we had to leave the place without having our breakfast. A place to never go

Excellent presentation and service

By carlchojnacki |

We obtained last second reservations. The service was fast, efficient and attentive. The food presentation was superb. The flavor were a little bland at times, but overall it was very good.

a wonderful Christmas meal

By Ellen S |

Often on days that are occasions (Thanksgiving, Mothers' Day, etc) a restaurant meal is just mediocre. Even at the nicest restaurants, the meals can feel mass produced and uninspired. Not at this restaurant. Christmas Day dinner at Cafe des Architectes was delicious. We all ordered different foods and each item was unique and delicious. The Staff attentive not hovering. Very cool atmosphere too. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will return.

lovely time at the cafe

By Hamoutal |

We are frequent guests at the Cafe ,always sure that we will have an excellent dinner ,artfully presented and attentive service ,We have come with out of town friend and also by ourselves for lunch or dinner and we have been very pleased .I so enjoy the french touch and the serene ambiance so that conversation is pleasant .It is one of my favorite restaurant in Chicago .

A Magnifique Breakfast Indeed.

By truthintraveling |

We had breakfast here as part of the Magnifique breakfast package from Sofitel. It was worth it. Fancy and the portions are good. The wait staff is very accommodating, pleasing and warm. Highly recommended

Awesome Place

By Betty S |

So many stores to choose from, great prices, great selection from designer to name brand collections, the selections were limitless.

Nasty, Nasty, Nasty

By TransConFlyer |

Trying to dine at Cafe des Architectes on a Sunday morning was a very jarring and disgusting experience. As we were seated, an insect was crawling along the banquette. I also saw that the planter on the table was covered with dust, moldy water had collected between the table and the glass top, and food remains from prior guests had not been cleaned. On the ground near neighboring tables was a total mess of bread, crumbs, and other food debris. It was all a little much for a Sunday morning. We left (I explained why to the host who said she was sorry I felt the way I did. The issue was not how I felt but instead the restaurant being squalid). We ended up at another restaurant up the street and had a very nice lunch. I will never enter the Cafe des Architectes again.

Top shelf

Service is excellent no matter which property. Dinner here was fabulous. The Degustation menu will never disappoint and is highly recommended at this property. The Chef and staff is very attentive to each and every client, and really make you feel special.

Excellent cuisine, excellent service at the Sofitel Water tower

By David Hallett |

We enjoyed several breakfasts here and were very happy. Quality food, great service. Great selection of breads, croissants etc. We had dinner as well and enjoyed the Menu of the day. Outstanding food, nice size serves and great outdoor seating. Enjoy the late summer weather and dine outside

Fine Dining hiding behind an All-Day Dining Facade

By 1220partner |

Restaurants set aside for all-day dining lack a certain comfort, intimacy, tableware and napery. Cafe des Architectes offers contemporary comfort with good tableware and napery. One look at the menu and one immediately registers that this is serious food. A fine menu covering seasonal produce and interestingly in-house made cheese and charcuterie. I had an exemplary piece of Halibut plated up with modern touches and thankfully no foam in sight. Table and wine service was excellent. We had dinner here after arriving from a long haul flight and felt very comforted and ready for a good night's sleep. but more importantly looking forward to what had to be a good breakfast ! John MacDonald.

great breakfast!

By claudine88 |

love to have breakfast at the cafe des architecets when i am staying at the sofitel. Great choices and great service!

Great food, ambiance and service

By Sandra V |

The Benedictine eggs were perfect, the bread and the coffee... uhmm. Even do the place was packed, the service was very fast, they gave us a table right away. The place is lovely with a lot of natural lightning, which I love.

Outstanding food

By Rosgriffin |

We enjoyed our dinner here. The menu somewhat small but a food that we had cooked perfectly I had a Alaskan halibut it couldn't have been any better. We both had a pea soup appetizer and it was outstanding the wine list is okay the prices to me were a little high but otherwise the selections match the cuisine very well service was good and friendly and the price was right it wasn't that high and consistent with a good high in meal the decor made me think I was in Paris or Europe very European. We would return

Perfect hotel and the best chocolate croissant outside France!! :)

Excellent hotel very well located, fab room and perfect bed! Nice shower and bath and right in the center of town

Drinks before dinner

By Paris600 |

We met friends for cocktails before dinner and we really liked this place. I loved the fireplace and couch area. TV's for the sports people, but not overwhelming. Nice ambience.

Surely a treat!

By Maria D |

A feast for the eyes and palate. Cozy and chic ambience. Great attention to details and service. A treat anytime of the day.

Very good overall. Nice menu, quality service, beautiful atmosphere. Love the attention to detail! Definite recommendation.

Thanksgiving Dinner

By Catherine D |

Last year we came to Cafe des Architectes for Thanksgiving Dinner and it was so good and we were in Chicago again so we came back. And we are delighted we did. The food is wonderful. The service is efficient and very friendly. My husband had delicious scallops with a fabulous pumpkin purée. I had parsnip soup which had grapefruit and orange slices in it which was cool. My husband had the short ribs of beef which he highly recommends. I had the traditional turkey dinner with dressing and cranberries and gravy. It was like home made but better because I didn't have to cook! My husband had a more than better chocolate desert. I ordered the pumpkin pie and it was good but my husband ate it. Since we stayed at the Sofitel, we also ate here for breakfast. For $10 we upgraded our room to included breakfast. I am so glad we did because the breakfast was a full breakfast worth at least $30-40. We had juice, bacon and eggs, baguette rolls and French press coffee. We could have also had omelettes, eggs Benedict, pancakes or oatmeal. Very good food. Very good service. We really like this restaurant and will come again if we are here for Thanksgiving.

I love this restaurant - unusual thing to say for a hotel restaurant

By Guy M |

I stay here because of the restaurant. Not that the rest of the hotel is bad at all - very nice room I am staying in - it's just that the restaurant makes it. The breakfast is really excellent. The quality of the pastries and bread is truly exceptional. And the porridge, or oatmeal as we are in the US, is also great. Many interesting restaurants on the doorstep but I choose to eat in. That says it all. Enjoy!

Overall excellent, but Pimento cheese?

By travelpr0123 |

Our dinner choices were all great, the pheasant and the Creme Brulee desert being our absolute favorites, the scallop appetizer and the crab cakes were also delicious. Unfortunately the bread basket choices don't match the expectation one has while eating here. Also: A 'Taste of the South' in a French restaurant in Chicago: Pimento cheese? We expected something better, what's wrong with Pate, Foie Gras, anybody? The service was excellent. A very nice dinner. Negative: A top restaurant has to check ALL aspects of the interior, including the light fixtures. Dead critters are unacceptable (See photo).

Excellent

By Lawyer/Exporter |

This is the restaurant at the Sofitel where we were staying. We usually avoid hotel restaurants but ate there as we were too tired to go elsewhere. The hotel is set back on a corner and in front of it there are outdoor lounges for the bar and comfy tables and chairs for the restaurant. We were there on a beautiful hot night and the food was excellent. Light and tasty with free extra bits like a truffle mousse starter. There was a good selection of wine by the glass, the service was friendly and we were very impressed from start to finish.

Great breakfasts!

By plinner |

We didn't have a chance to eat dinner here but the breakfasts and lunch were really good. Next time will try and book a table for dinner.

Nice dinner after long flight

By mrosco |

We sat down for dinner around 8:30 after flying in from the east coast. The restaurant was pretty empty since it was late for a mid week dinner. We had a couple appetizers, entrees and dessert. Overall, the food was good and the drinks were good. It was a bit pricey, but for a higher end hotel it wasn't too bad.

Great atmosphere with a high price

By Julie M |

My husband ordered the charcuterie and cheese plate and was quite pleased. I ordered the lump crab omlette, but the crab was the shredded remains. Very disappointed!

Classy and beautiful presentation! A+++

By Patricia A |

We stopped here on Memorial Day for breakfast because they have the lovely outdoor dining. We just walked up, didn't have to park a car, and we were seated immediately. The restaurant is very chic and classy! All those ginormous windows and amazing decor! I was surprised how crowded it was inside the restaurant and less crowded outside for their outdoor dining. We had breakfast, the waiter was exceptional and another server walked around periodically with French baguettes and other YUMMY pastries. The presentation of the meal was BEAUTIFUL! (Even for a simple breakfast!). They prepared the meal exactly to our specifications--and we had a lot of them. The ambiance was warm, upscale, and relaxing. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a memorable dining experience. Here's a tip!! If the weather is accommodating, be SURE to sit outside, there are about a dozen or more tables outside. Or reserve your indoor table near the window--the view is simply AMAZING! Please press "yes" if you found this helpful as I wonder if anyone actually reads these....

Salt....Salt....Salt

By Honest Review |

I was really disappointed here.....Nice location but the food is blah.....nothing we tried was even average and the duck so salty I could not eat it. The chestnut provision tasting was terrible.....Do not eat here...period!

A class organization

By Fitzsimons |

We were only there for vino and appetizers and ended up consuming more that we had planned. The presentation of the food is exceptional as is the taste and they serve higher end wines. It is not inexpensive, but a cut above similar establishments. The wait staff is very classy and professional and reflect positively on this restaurant.

Almost like being in France

By BridgetMcQ |

Staying at the Sofitel, you will not be compromising by also dining at the restaurant! The fresh butter and French pastries were excellent (as well as the imported jams).

A sumptous first class breakfast.

By Shane F |

I have visited Cafe Des Architectes on only a few occasions, and it has never disappointed. You may be paying a slightly higher price for your meal, but my word, it IS truly worth it. I normally stay quite close by in either the Westin or Drake hotels, and have sampled their breakfast fare many times. But whenever I get an opportunity to enjoy a good solid breakfast, I come here. The decor is atypically and ornately French, as is the lobby of the Sofitel. The architecture of the hotel is amazing and is worth a visit alone. The welcome is warm and genuine and I am always seated quickly. On my last visit here, I ate alone after a great mornings run - so I was absolutely starving. I ordered off the breakfast menu, asking for the Margharita omelet. I liked the idea of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and fresh mozzarella. This came with red breakfast potatoes. After I ordered my main, the requisite Lavazza pressed coffee and fresh orange juice arrived. And this was quickly followed by the huge Continental Homemade Baker's Basket. This selection has to be seen first hand and it is truly mouthwatering. I went for the pain au raisin. My server was extremely courteous and friendly, and no request was too much. This restaurant was most recently awarded the Certificate of Excellence 2015 by Trip Advisor - and it's easy to see why. If you have time and don't mind spending a couple of extra dollars for excellent service and quality food - come here.

Cafe des Perfectects

By Carly S |

My dad and I stayed in Chicago for about a week and were looking for a nice French place to eat at. We found this restaurant over UrbanSpoon. We walked in, not knowing it was in a hotel and were seated immediately by a kind french waiter. We ordered the chef’s special. Throughout the night our glasses were refilled, our food was fresh and our waiter was kind. The food was perfect. the service was great. The only negative thing was the price. Kind of pricey but totally worth it. It was definitely a cool experience.

A la carte Chicago

By TravelFoodDance |

Upscale casual dining atmosphere inside Sofitel Hotel. We went here for a la carte Chicago: celebrate the French table. Gorgeous presentation of delicious food! Also, excellent service.

Winter trip to Chicago

By Ian N |

We were staying at the Sofitel so had to try out their restaurant. Food was well presented - I had the rabbit and my wife ate the fish both were tasty.. We booked early and were presented with two free glasses of champagne, a nice touch. The highlight of the restaurant was our server Romi. Excellent all all round. We enjoyed him so much that every night we would stop by for coffee and dessert/drinks. He was awesome and a valuable asset to the restaurant and hotel.

Pricey but worth it

By Dennis S |

The food and wine are excellent. The service is first rate. Attentive staff that makes dining a fine experience. Have had several business dinners there and it's nice to be in a restaurant where you can a normal conversation. Pricey but worth in terms of quality in food, service and atmosphere.

Excellent service and great breakfast

By Joe6strings |

This is an excellent French restaurant and a great choice for breakfast as well. The cafe des Architectes is located in the Sofitel Chicago hotel where I was staying, so it was convenient to eat here and I was glad I did. As soon as I was seated, I was greeted by a waiter who quickly brought coffee. He was followed by another waiter who offered a tasty selection of croissants. And that was all before I had the chance to order! I enjoyed the steel-cut oatmeal topped with berries - it was both delicious and healthy. A great way to start the day in Chicago!

Business teip

By Roger C |

Great hotel and great staff, highly recommend this place for any occasion. Zero issues and no hassles with walking distance to great restaurants in the vicinity.

Very professional and courteous staff

By misterowens |

My family was able to book this hotel on Priceline for a discounted rate. However, we quickly learned staying in downtown Chicago is not cheap. We had to pay a an up-charge to get accommodations for the four of us. When we arrived, we were very pleased with the hotel. It was very pretty and smelled nice. The entire staff was friendly, polite, and accommodating. We stayed on the 22nd floor and the view of the city was nice. The room was very clean and the beds were very comfy! The bathroom, with it's separate tub and shower, was stocked with many extras that you would expect from an upscale hotel (robe, slippers, full size hair dryer, etc). Although we did enjoy our stay at the Sofitel, I came to realize that it is ideally suited for couples and business travelers. Tip: it costs $65 each night to park (if you bring your car). We used SpotHero and found nearby parking for only $25 per night.

Well prepared food, French flair

By n2r49rs |

We enjoyed our dinner here. The food was the highlight for sure. We shared a crab cake that was nearly all crab and baked! It was excellent! Then we each had foie gras and it was perfectly cooked rare with a nice pear flavor along with some hazelnuts. Really tasty! Mains were a halibut in a saffron sauce and duck breast. Overall both of us loved each of the courses. Restaurant wasn't very crowded that evening which took a bit away. Service was professional.

Lovely decor inside and outside. Sweet classy hotel bar and wonderful accommodations throughout the hotel. Staff is incredibly polite and helpful.

A little reminder of France

By Paul C |

We had breakfast as well as an afternoon snack at the cafe. Each experience met or exceeded our expectations. The staff was competent, and, more importantly, quite friendly. I particularly enjoyed speaking my beginner's French with our waiter, who was quite patient and helpful. I wasn't anticipating a free lesson, but was pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent as well.

Never disappointed

By Marc R |

I really like this restaurant, which serves an excellent French cuisine. The meals are well prepared and the cooking is innovative. The atmosphere is cozy and sophisticated. It is a place I recommend to have a romantic dinner.

European flair in Chicago - can't beat that!

By snydepat |

I have only had breakfast other than for business meetings and can say that I have never been disappointed

Great!

By Olga_Eme |

Had 2 dinners at the Cafe. The prices are good, not more expensive than in another restaurants in Chicago. Had crab cakes - definitely recommended, smoked salmon tartar - really with smoke, cheeses. I can also add that waiters are very nice, especially Romi. Will definitely come back to the restaurant when I am next time in Chicago.

Christmas Dinner

By Victoria S |

We went for Christmas dinner today. The hotel was decorated beautifully and the staff are always lovely. The food was all not only beautifully presented but delicious!! The duck, short ribs and whitefish ....all wonderful! Love this restaurant and the hotel itself.

Magnifique

By Paul C |

I have eaten here at least 30 times over the past decade. Great food, outstanding service in a beautiful setting. No gimmicks. Romy is #1:)

LOVED IT

By Sandra C |

The food was great. The server packed my breakfast for me because I was running late for my meeting. I love the cleanliness of the place. Totally recommend it.

A hidden gem in Chicago

By BPJP |

Rarely do you find both creative and delicious food at a hotel restaurant, but Cafe des Architectes is a hidden gem in the Sofitel Chicago. The chef is creative and knows how to blend flavors in a subtle and delicious way. We enjoyed our dinner so much that we decided to do breakfast at CDA as well! We started with the Charcuterie plate that featured cheeses and meats from their own cave and worldwide. Nice variety paired with jams, mustards and incredible breads/butter. We also indulged in their chicken liver mousse which was lick the plate delicious. We will have dreams about this dish for sure! Hubby had the roasted duck breast with fresh veg and beautiful exotic mushrooms - tender, well prepared and seasoned just right. I enjoyed the escargot parpadelle. Pasta was homemade and delicate tossed in a light cream herb sauce with tender flavorful snails. Portions were just right and service was attentive but not obtrusive. Would highly recommend for a unique and romantic dinner! Will be back!!

Elegant and quiet

By Stefano G |

This restaurant, located in the Sofitel downtown Chicago, offers mostly French cuisine dishes, carefully prepared and presented, with a menu encompassing both fish, seafood and meat-based offerings. Their chicken is particularly good, tasty and juicy. The wine menu is remarkable. Prices are adequate to the relatively upscale offerings, and service is friendly and prompt. But the most remarkable plus of this place is the quiet conversation you can have with your friends! In fact, you can actually talk softly and hear what everybody is saying! Amazing, isn't it?

A Fine Restaurant in Chicago's Gold Coast Neighborhood

By Rami Y |

In the neighborhood where we live, this restaurant is known for its fine breakfasts, brunches and dinners. A quality that we appreciate the most is its quietness, a rare happening in Chicago restaurants were loudness is not only accepted but encouraged! Six of us dined there last night. The greeting and service were impeccable. The food could have been better if the talented chef did not have an infatuation with adding different colored vegetable purees on top and under his cooked fish or meat, thus diminishing the visual appeal of the otherwise well-prepared meals.

Great desserts/drinks - not so great service

By Keri A |

We had drinks and desserts after a day/evening out in the city. The desserts and drinks were delicious, but the server was not so great. He was somewhat short/rude to us when he found out we were only ordering dessert and drinks. Didn't come back to check on us or ask us if we wanted another drink. I was somewhat disappointed because we would have frequented here more (we were staying in the hotel) had our experience been better, but instead we went elsewhere to dine.

Good quality but underwhelming atmosphere.

By Paris623 |

For here's I didn't want to go into this restaurant, because it was so physically unappealing. On Christmas Day, my family and I had a amazing meal. Definitely worth going for food but keep your expectations for the ambience.

Restaurant week

By Loty v |

Food and atmosphere were both lovely. But what made the meal memorable was definitely one of the bussers, Purna. Both friendly and polite, he made the visit an absolute delight! You guys are lucky to have him as part of your staff!

Exceent food

By Don C |

we ordered arctic char and it was excellently prepared. Our only complaint was that there was too much food. We are an older couple and would have preferred to have been advised of that so that we would have had the option of splitting the entre.

Amazing pillows

By Jessica W |

This was the first hotel I have ever stayed at where I asked the front desk where I could purchase their pillows! They were amazing! The entire hotel smelled incredible as I walked in and the luxury did not stop there. The rooms were very well decorated, the bed was beyond comfortable and the elegant touches like slippers and a toiletry kit were fantastic. A true treat in luxury.

If it was only as good as the Architecture of Chicago

By Norvel1 |

If it was as good as the architecture of Chicago, it would be a real winner. Service was 4-5 star - but the food fell a bit flat for the price. Its like a roll out of copycat Postmodern facades that plagued suburban architecture in the early 80's - blase'. Crab cakes were excellent and hearty. Short ribs were a bit over dosed in marinade. The Duck we sent back as it seemed reheated and overdone.

Spectacular

By Social_robin |

I am not a regular luxury traveler but after the visit to the Sofitel and Cafe des Architecte I have upped my standards. The Chef's tasting was spectacular. I visited on my birthday and it was my best gift that day.

Worth dining in!

By David Hallett |

We ate all our breakfasts here and a wonderful dinner. Quality food and quality service. Outside seating is great on those warm summer nights. we had the Menu of the day and the choices and quality were excellent.

Had to go back again.

By roccleu |

Had another opportunity to stay at the Sofitel again for business meetings. By the way a very good business center. I happened to staying there again last night and stiumbled upon an event called "Meet The Artisan's". it was held in a quant room right off the "Le Bar". What an event. They gathered some of the best purveyors of meats, cheeses and wines in the city. Buffet and hand passed speciality foods alond with a fine array of French wines. Rose, St. Emillion and Bourdeax's from France. Not only was my stay great once again, but this event really made this visit special. Can't wait to see what is next when i stay again. The only sad part is my businss traveling is about done for 2015. Can't wait to return in 2016 to see what they have going on.

Wonderful food, wine and service

By sallyG8114BT |

We arrived a little earlier than our reservation. The atmosphere was very inviting bordering on luxurious. We started with champagne, and both of us decided on sea trout that was cooked to perfection. Romi our waiter was wonderful; he even sang a wee bit (in French) for us. We had a flinty, crisp French Sancerre wine with dinner followed by foot long rich creme brulée to share. We couldn't have asked for a nicer dinner.

Yummy choice for Thanksgiving dinner in Chicago

By dasullivan2016 |

After searching online for options for Thanksgiving dinner in the city that was convenient to our hotel and had interesting food choices, we settled on Cafe des Architectes and I must say we chose well. Located just inside the Sofitel and only a few blocks from our stay at the Waldorf Astoria, the restaurant had a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for our group. We arrived on time for our reservation but they were running a few minutes behind and graciously appeared with glasses of Prosecco for each of us to enjoy while we waited in the lobby. Prix fixe menu was reasonable priced with interesting choices for all of us--2 decided to stick with the traditional turkey entree choice and one decided to break with tradition and ordered the risotto. Everyone was delighted with the food! Delicious and beautifully presented. Staff was excellent...efficient without being intrusive. Desserts were delicious and beautiful and we sampled three different choices with none disappointing. Lovely choice for a family Thanksgiving dinner. We shall be back next year!

Best Fois Gras

By 351Frequentflyer |

Fantastic Fois Gras and Carrot Velouté!! Incredible service and wine list. Daily specials are a challenge to choose from... The cheese trays are delightful and I highly recommend.

Good choice in the Mag Mile.

By Guilherme Dallaqua |

Cool restaurant in the Mag Mile. Actually we were hosted in Sofitel - the restaurant is inside - and pick a night to celebrate a romantic dinner in Chicago. We liked the expericence. The staff is really well prepared and the food was good and fancy! Good sort of wine and beers. The price is expensive, a little higher than we expected.

Great location for a city visit to Chicago

By George N |

Very accesible, exciting design and architecture, good service and delightful bars and restaurant. Only 1 block from North Michigan Avenue and John Hancock Centre. I've stayed twice now and would happily go back a third time.

The best place to stay in Chicago!

By southendgirlfriend |

We go to Chicago several times a year and always stay at Sofitel. The atmosphere is relaxed elegance. The bed is the most amazing we've ever slept in - feather bed, down comforter and pillows, spa-like bathrooms, modern decor. Free amazing coffee in the restaurant in the mornings. Very helpful staff and concierge. Excellent bar. What's not to love?

Great Service and Food

By Emily W |

This french influenced restaurant has wonderful service, delicious food in a lovely, street fronted environment. They don't do art on a plate, both meals we ate there during our stay were enormous. We left more food than we ate. Our family each ordered something different and then shared. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented.

Excellent fix price menu

By Clevlander |

We love this restaurant It's classy, European styled decor and food but most of all their three course fix price menu that always changes.

French classic

By CharleneDC |

I have been receiving the Chicago Magazine for several weeks prior to my trip. I was ver surprised to see very few diners on a Saturday evening. The lounge was packed and boisterous. The wine was very good but I had to asked for refills. The charcuterie plate was pleasant but again I had to ask what meat and cheese items were on my plate as well as the accompaniment for the foie gras. All in all it was a pleasant evening. I’m not sure if this is normal or a single female dining alone.

So what's wrong with a hotel restaurant?

By Taylor B |

Over the years, we have become increasingly aware that the quality of hotel restaurants is much better than food critics often give them credit for. The Four Seasons in Chicago is worthy of five stars. So was the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton, one of our personal favorites before it closed. The Cape Cod Room at the Drake Hotel was a classic. So is the Palace Arms at the Brown Palace in Denver. And Jack Dusty's at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. Well, the Cafe des Architectes in the lobby of the Sofitel Hotel at 20 East Chestnut Street in the heart of Chicago's Gold Coast is in the conversation. Executive chef Greg Biggers has created a kitchen-to-table concept that features an assortment of cave aged cheeses, charcuterie, jams and preserves that have inspired new dishes, everything from Brie to Taleggio to Pepperone to Bressola to pickled banana peppers to preserved eggplant to pineapple miso to strawberry tomato. Out-of-town businessmen rave about breakfasts that include fresh juices, smoothies, shakes, cappuccinos, lattes, French Press Lavazza coffee, oatmeal, fresh fruit, omelets, Eggs Benedict, crepes, quiche, Belgian waffle, French toast, buttermilk pancakes and a good old-fashioned American breakfast of two eggs, red potatoes and pork link sausage, chicken sausage, applewood smoked bacon or grilled honey-cured ham. It's a great way to start a busy day. But my wife and I opted for dinner, trading the hustle-and-bustle of the morning for a more relaxed atmosphere in the evening. We started with the chef's signature selection of cured meats and cheeses appetizer for two. For us, it was a different approach from the traditional shrimp cocktail and lobster bisque. But we couldn't have been more pleased with the result. For entrees, we remained true to our more fish/less meat diet and chose Wild Atlantic salmon and Lake Superior White Fish. The nearby table was delighted with the Iowa beef ribeye and roasted duck breast. Dessert was a treat, too. We shared a couple of slices of white chocolate lemon cake with olive oil ice cream and honey-vanilla cremeaux. Don't ask me what olive oil ice cream is. That's what it said on the menu. But it was delicious. So much for the myth that hotel restaurants are to be avoided like a burnt steak.

Excellent food and service

By Sara N |

Excellent food and service. Not as crowded as I would have liked it to be. There were only a couple other tables occupied for Friday night at 8:30pm. My husband and I were able to have a nice romantic dinner still and tried like a dozen things on the menu. All were delicious. We will come back here, maybe on a Sat when its busier or when we need a place for dinner last minute.

A Little Paris in Chicago

By Bruce F |

The food here is French / American and always quite good. And so is the service which is prompt and courteous. The restaurant features its own cheeses and cured meats. It is also conveniently located in the Sofitel hotel just off the Magnificent Mile (N. Michigan Ave.). The restaurant is on the ground level just after you enter the hotel, affording guests an attractive view of the city outside.

Limited food options

By Sam Jo |

They sure have outdoor seating as well. You can enjoy it during summer. Décor is good. The choice though was very limited. No buffet breakfast. Available Menu was also expensive. Simple Omlette was 18 USD + tax and served with potatoes, bread + tea/coffee. Food quality was decent. I ordered Orange Juice and it was served fresh and not from CAN. A simple omelette plus Orange juice costed 26 USD. Tip for travellers is that if you find these expensive, just go over to Starbucks which is approx. at 50 ft from this place on right towards Michigan Avenue.

Very nice hotel restaurant

By GWS46 |

Modern, open feeling. Very professional and friendly staff. Good food and wine choices, high quality presentation. The morning breakfasts were delightful. My wife loved the perfect omelettes.

Nice touches, lacks atmosphere

By RSpacker |

On the first floor of the Sofitel in Chicago's Gold Coast. Service was good, but first floor location right by registration desk wasn't a great setting. Food was fine - olive tapenade was tasty, chicken pasta was all right and portion was plentiful. It was not a busy night and I was dining alone. Really appreciated the gratis tower of macarons, marshmellow and other chocolat delights.

Great Valentines Day spot.

By Patrick L |

Went to Cafe des Architects for Valentines day (actually night before). They had a special tasting menu along with a nice selection of wine. The food was wonderful and the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive, the food came out in a timely fashion - we had mentioned we had theater tickets. Between the two of us we selected all the items off of the menu and they were all good.

Creative food

By wahnee86 |

Creative dishes that were appealing, especially when paired with the beer. The bread service alone made the place worth visiting.

Sunday brunch/lunch

By Bruce F |

I have been to this restaurant a number of times and decided to visit again for Sunday lunch. This being a French restaurant in the French hotel, I was hoping for a few French dishes. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed. The menu was basically American, and I found the food rather average. No bread was served despite the fact that there was a nice tray of fruit preserves and honey in the middle of the table. For example there was no basket of croissants or brioche as in the past. Yes, there were omelettes, but one can find those pretty much anywhere. However, I can’t vouch for the menu during the week Including dinners. The best part of the meal was the coffee served fresh in a French press.

Pleasant Meal

By 618ObsessedTraveler |

My husband and I had an entree and appetizer to share before our late dinner reservations. The salmon was cooked beautifully on a really good puree. My butternut squash soup was also delicious. It is a bit pricey, but overall a good meal.

Great food reasonably priced

By mark_id |

We stayed at the Sofitel while in Chicago and only tried the Hotel restaurant on the last night, when we did we were surprised by the quality of the food. In effect it looks simple from the outside although the cook does wonders in the kitchen. As we generally do we chose the degustation menu with wine pairing and were told the Chef would put us something together with the fresh ingredients available and left it in his capable hands. We were amazed at the quality of the food and wine. All at a very reasonable price

Wonderful Christmas Dinner!

By Victoria S |

My husband and I took his recently widowed mother to Cafe for Christmas Dinner. We loved the whole experience.....the Sofitel itself, the food, and the staff. The fixed 3 course dinner was a dream....the cheese tart appetizer, my shortribs..........melt in your mouth, and the chocolate dessert was OMG fabulous. My husband did comment that his lamb wellington was a little overdone but was happy with the rest of his meal. What made the experience so wonderful and fun was our waiter, Romi. He was beyond sweet, charming, funny and helpful........even singing us a little song in French. My mother-in-law really cheered up during dinner. Thank you all so much.....We can't wait to come back!

Consistently good

By LIsa B |

Another great breakfast: pain au chocolat; French press coffee, smoked salmon pastrami Benedict and American breakfast- pork sausage, not too salty- and as always professional service - Sofitel service always a cut above.

Good breakfast

By ErikVollebregt |

I had breakfast there once on a business trip staying at the Sofitel (in which this restaurant is located) - nothing special but the omelette was good and the cafe latte too. I liked that the place was very light (usually not the case in US hotel restaurants). Staff was friendly and quick.

Fresh ingredients and well prepared

By LAJ7 |

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner. We tried several small plates and all were outstanding. Fresh locally sourced ingredients and so well prepared. They have a new chef and he is outstanding. Not just another hotel restaurant. Breakfast was delicious too. Tasty croissants.

Superb!

By Rarm13 |

My Goodness we quickly learned why this restaurant is ranked so high among Chicago restaurants by the Trip Advisor folk. What has been achieved here is the joining of incredibly delicious and well-presented meals and impeccable service. Our foursome had a wonderful Saturday night meal enjoying four separate entrees' which were each works of art. BE SURE to try the desserts!

Many exra's

By Mary M |

I was in Chicago for a wedding at the Drake. My wife and stayed at the Sofitel in that it is walking distance from the Drake and the rates were less but the extra's were more. It was a rainy weekend but the hotel had umbrella's for our use. A really big shower, bathrobes, plenty of coffee, coffee pot hard to find at first, but the list of extra's went on and on. Great place, great location.

Sofitel Luxery

By PJ P |

Very lovely, luxurious hotel close to Michigan Avenue in Chicago, IL. The lobby is beautiful with fresh flower arrangements and comfortable seating. The staff is very helpful and professional. Our room was beautifully decorated and the beds comfortable. We had breakfast at the on site restaurant, and it was just wonderful.

Great modern French food and atmosphere

By kattriprevus |

We had a special occasion dinner on a Saturday evening. The cheese & meat appetizer tray was wonderful, as were our entrees, and the chocolate dessert. The service was attentive, yet not intrusive from Bismarck. The restaurant location in the lobby of the Sofitel Hotel makes it visible from the street. Of note for restaurant patrons is that the bathrooms are in the hotel itself and require an elevator ride to the second floor at a distance from the restaurant. Given the ambience of this fine dining restaurant, it is recommended for couples, groups, and families with teens and older. Glad we tried it.

great brunch

By Allison Mc |

like the eggs benedict (all variants) and French toast. perfectly foamed cappuccino. seemed to accommodate guests with vouchers for breakfast included in their room rate?

Breakfast i our Hotel reminiscent of our Paris trip

By katiewilmington_DE |

We stayed in the Chicago Sofitel Hotel and upon arrival had breakfast in the restaurant. We had stayed in Paris last year and of course had to try the croissants and french bread basket along with wonderful pressed coffee. Wonderful!! Saw the breakfast entrees alongside of us being served and all looked fabulous! As was the presentation on the serving of the steak & eggs ( a flat type dish that was a very unique concept!) Will be back!

Good but Pricey

By Robert14615 |

This restaurant primarily serves French food, which I'm not accustomed to eating but the food was very good. It can be a bit pricey but I loved the breakfast options and free pastries and croissants. they serve complimentary tea and coffee for hotel guest.

Sweet Treat

By Tahna E |

We ventured down from our hotel room for dessert before heading to bed. We were warmly greeted and seated. We ordered 2 separate desserts the Strawberry-Rhubarb and the Lemon Torte. We found the Stawberry-Rhubarb to not actually have much Strawberry or Rhubarb but to be heavy on the Semolina cake. Not sure if this is the norm or just what you get later at night. The Lemon Torte was presented perfectly and had amazing flavor.

Good but very quiet

By lectu |

CDA had great food: ate the gnocchi and the spinach salad. Service was attentive and fast. However for a Saturday night there were probably 5 tables with people and the rest was empty...

New Incarnation

By Sanjay Dhir |

Located in Hotel Sofitel , Cafe Des Architects has been renovated recently and now is known in short form as CDA. Gone are the huge hung metal lampshades which were impressive but had knocked my head quite a few times when getting up after a tasty meal The restaurant serves bfast in the morning ( no buffet around 10-12 fixed dishes out of which Egg Benedict with ham or Kale and the Quiche standout besides the complimentary pastries) . In it's new Avatar it has started serving mostly Mediterranean small plates and finger food.. In the evening it supports the bar ( Le Bar ) besides looking after it's visitors. The food , the ambiance and specially the staff is great. In Chicago's blink and you will miss short summer it's a bliss to sit outside and savour the food.

A superior place

By Sandy C |

This restaurant, in the Sofitel, is beautifully designed, as you might expect from its name. I would suggest beginning with a mixed green salad. These are not on the menu, but they will bring you one if you ask.The main dishes are lapidary, by which I mean presented as little jewels. I've eaten there twice and found it delightful both times.

Are You Hungry?

By LetsPlayOutside! |

When you stand at the threshold of this restaurant stop and take it in. It is slick. It's red, white, black, artsy, modern, cozy, tall, and glass-coated. Definitely fashionable. But when you sit in one of those cool-looking chairs the ambience takes a hit. The music provides a jazzy groove that promotes conversation. The staff is attentive and at least one person actually speaks French. I sat looking out of the tall, concave, tilted, window at red outdoor umbrellas and trellis work as I listened to the creak of my flimsy chair. There was an angry horse staring at me, nose flaring. After the complementary tapenade arrived, the meal went down from there. The menu was nice, clearly defined and intriguing. Expensive, too. To be sure, the entree was expertly prepared and presented, the wine, lovely but the portions made me think that there was famine in the land. The service was nice--not commensurate with the cost--but nice. It was a one-time experience after which I needed a burger and fries.

Fine dining at its best

By Belinda F |

We had dinner here to celebrate our anniversary and so glad we did. The food was absolutely delicious. It was also lovely to meet the Chef and to be treated extra special as it was our anniversary.

Trend setting good

By Ann U |

Must have - cheeses. They create them in their own make shift caves. Delicious. Everything that we had was wonderful. A bit on the expensive side but worth it if you enjoy art in food. The only complaint I have is regarding other guests. Dress appropriately. Restauranters go to great lengths to provide a certain ambiance. It is out of respect that guests compliment that ambiance in the way they dress. Wear the t shirt and shorts for the pizza joints.

Located off of the lobby of the Sofitel Hotel

By robby-d |

We decided to have a light dinner at the Cafe des Architectes while we stayed at the Sofitel. The service was excellent and the ambiance was very nice. My wife and I ordered two pasta dishes that were available for the Chicago Marathon and relativelly inexpensive. $16 each. Mine had pulled pork in it. Although the quantity of the pork was very good, I thought the flavor was uninspiring. We both had a drink that was okay. We had an excellent dessert that consiseted of a thin slice of delicious and moist chocolate cake, topped with three raspberries, and little dobs of whipped cream.

Like always

By Peter K |

A very high service standard and good food. The bar is quite exceptionsl due to the extensive selection of craft beers. I will come back here every time when I am in Chicago. The " a la carte breakfast" is also unique.

Absolutely one of the finest places you will eat at

By FeedbackISGOOD |

Ok - not sure why the the previous reviewer was dissing this - but it almost put me off ...... I am glad I went .... I actually stayed here (at the Sofitel - French style based hotel) and tried the food ... OMG - probably the best lamb I have ever had... if you understand French cooking, you will know that these guys do it the right way ... Food is genuine - cooked with passion - and I would actually pay twice as much for the quality and end product .... Highly recommend - and will return ....

Good&superkind

By Daniele P |

Hotel restaurant where we've been for brunch, dinner and lunch. At any time we found good food and a super kind service. Recommended

Less than expected

By dred1 |

The overpowering smell of "fish" when we entered the restaurant was the first turn-off. I think fresh fish does not smell. The beet salad was very bland and to my taste needed more pizzazz. The squash ravioli was tasty. The foie gras was also good. The pappardelle entree was mediocre.

Top notch and delicious

By Mom2Nurse |

We enjoyed a brunch-type meal during the week at Café des Architectes. From the elegant place servings to the delicious food and friendly, professional service, this restaurant will remain on our list as a 'must-visit' every time we are in Chicago. The Bellinis and Bloody Mary were ice cold and on point in flavor. The homemade breads and assorted spreads were delicious and addictive. Our meals of Croques Monsieur and a lamb burger were among the most delicious meals of our entire trip.

Stylish but missing the touch

By Harsingar |

This is an elegant dining room just off the Sofitel Lobby. Nice crockery, nice bread basket and tapenade. Service was a bit slow, even though there was no one else dining. Menu options are rather large sized and heavy. Perhaps the management does not allow the Chef to conjure up simpler stuff even if diners request and business is slow. So we settled for sweet corn soup, Caeser Salad and Risotto. Waiters are sweet but distracted. I did not visit again although we stayed at the hotel for 5 days.

Favorite breakfast place in Chicago

By vicmazur |

My favorite place. Period! Their croissants are fresh and crispy, they arrange the food on the plate so artistically so I often don't even want to disturb it. Their staff is well trained and they all have sweet-sounding accents that bring you to Europe. Bravo! Five star.

Back again...still great

By nslarizona |

It wasn't planned but we had occasion to return to Chicago for a few nights and, again, stayed at the Sofitel. Like comfortable shoes, the services was great, the room's view excellent and the location perfect. Oh and the weather cooperated too. So thanks again Sofitel staff. Can't wait to return once again.

Pricey but worth it.

By Jodi W |

Great food prepared by a great chef. Service is good, but it is a little expensive. There is outdoor seating, as well, which is nice in Chicago in the summer. The French press coffee is awesome!

AMAZING BRUNCH with TOP NOTCH SERVICE ..!!!

Poor breakfast experience

By Nikolas N |

I have book the Sofitel to stay between 23-25 November , room 3016, and took the package with the breakfast having in mind that will enjoy a french buffet. As you may know the Sofitel is the flag hotel of the Accor chain. Once we arrived at the breakfast the next morning 24 nov , we have seen that there was no buffet , and that was a little of disappointment , however this is the hotel policy and we very well understand. We have ask for coffe , croissant and 2 breaksfast plates. Coffe arrived on time however our waiter never brought the croissant. I have seen one of the " managers" of the restaurant carrying a big basket of croissant and other freshly baked items and I have ask him to approach our table so we could taste them. My wife took a cinnamon roll, my self a croissant and I wanted to take a piece of chocolate bread, pain au chocolat, that moment the manager goes, " you are allowed only one piece" if you want another one you have to pay" . When he saw my surprise ony face , he continues and says, " this time I will give you an extra croissant for free" . I find it very very petit for a hotel as the Sofitel to bother if a client will take one or two croissant . When you pay 200-300usd a night . I understand is the hotel policy, but is a poor an cheap , I would expect minimum a small basket with 3-4 items for a table for two persons . Before we leave the breakfast we wanted to have another coffee, and we ask the waiter , we were waiting for about 15 minutes and nothing came, we ask the waiter again this time for a cup of coffe to go, but was never arrived either .I find the entire experience poor from the Sofitel . The hotel is beatiful and rooms are nicely done with all small amenities . I will make sure to avoid the breaksfast if ever I come back to this hotel. No need to spoil your day over a croissant , I think is shame from the Sofitel, to bother clients if they will eat one or two croissants , when most of the big chains in the city hilton Palmer , intercontinental offer a full buffer. Sofitel you can do a little better than that and offer the full French hospitality, instead running behind a second piece of " croissant ". Shame!!

Very good food with European service

By Chi-town |

Four couples had dinner last Saturday evening. For most of us, it was our first time. Was wondering what dinner would be like because it appears to be a small area off the lobby. But, once inside it is larger than it appears and the decor is very nice. The tables are done in black and silver, with the tops being squares of what appears to be mirrors. A black runner and a black ceramic vase containing a mini orchard were simple and elegant. Service was very attentive the minute we sat down. We ordered the charcuterie platter for four, and it was more than enough for eight people. In addition, we shared an order of crab cakes. Before this arrived, however, we were served an amuse of salmon with cream cheese and some terrific tasting berries. Not everyone in our party likes raw fish, so others of us had doubles. Oh, and bread with butter and a goat cheese mixture arrived. There were three kinds of bread, sour dough, olive and I forgot the last. Only tasted the olive bread and it was very good. Half of us (me included) had the Pacific Bass, three had the Short Rib and one had the Amish Chicken. Once again there was some foie gras passed by the Rib eaters who weren't into that delicacy!!! I was the beneficiary of the donated salmon and foie gras and they were amazing. My Pacific Bass was excellent--drier than most sea bass that I've tasted. The plated dish called for small potatoes, and they were small--about the size of my thumbnail--but quite tasty. As I was devouring my plate, I didn't remember what else what supposed to be on there, so I just ate everything and it all was very, very good. We were not planning on having dessert there, so we didn't order anything. As a finale, they brought each of us a small chocolate and lemon macaroon. No one passed this one up. My only concern was that some of the portions were small and most of the men could have eaten more. Me, on the other hand, ate all of the hand-me downs so I was fully satiated. Everyone enjoyed their meal, with the exception of the person having the Amish Chicken. I don't think she was enamored with it, but didn't really complain. With that in mind, everything on the plate was edible and everything on the plate was gone at the end of the meal. Service was excellent. Everything arrived in a timely fashion and they continued to clean our eating space and keep up with our beverage requests. The staff was very professional and not stuffy, so it made for a very comfortable evening. I was very impressed and likely to visit this restaurant again.

Great location!

This is a nice, clean, restaurant! A good place to stop and have a snack, or drink, and then continue on to your other activities. There is shopping and other great amenities all around this location. We also enjoy staying at this hotel the service is wonderful!

Celebrating special occasion during Sunday brunch.

By zennph |

I have brought my family and friends at this welcoming, light-filled restaurant inside the Sofitel Hotel Chicago in the Gold Coast for dinners the past several years and have always immensely enjoyed Chef Greg Biggers contemporary French cuisine. Last Nov. 20, my family had only time for Sunday brunch. I called for a reservation few days before, with special requests. A gentleman "Jesse" answered the phone and told me they do not take reservation for Sunday brunch. I explained that we were coming from the suburbs and time constrained. We also have special request for Foie Gras for 6 people to be ordered with the "a la carte" menu. Jesse patiently listened and told me to wait and he would ask Chef Biggers. I was ecstatic and grateful when he said that Chef Greg Biggers granted both requests for reservation at 12:30 pm and the Foie gras special orders. The delicate, delicious Foie Gras Mousse terrine with condiments and toasted mini-brioche slices were superb and they even gave us more toasted brioche slices upon request. I ordered the brunch sampler priced at $ 25.00 and i was very impressed by the combination: omelet stuffed with homemade charcuterie, a side of perfectly dressed mesclun, mini-bagel and lox and a "melt in the mouth" fat slice of brioche French toast. The sampler came with trio of refreshing in-house made juices, cranberry, pineapple and grapefruit and trio of well-presented ,colorful and sumptuous desserts: raspberry creme cake, layered chocolate mousse with ganache and a unique pistachio layered cake with filling and icing.Needless to say, i was more than happy and satisfied with my choice. My daughter ordered a moist bacon and gruyere quiche which i sampled while my 2 grandsons devoured their special hamburgers with frites. My son ordered the featured steak with eggs and waffles. We were also given a generous basket filled with croissants and pastries. Overall, my family was very pleased with our Sunday brunch , and service was excellent as usual. My deepest Thanks to Chef Greg Biggers, to Jesse who answered my phone call and the restaurant staff for making the birthday celebration for my beloved husband's birthday [now deceased for almost a year]. He also loved this beautiful and cozy place where we enjoyed early dinners with our family or just the 2 of us after a Lyric Opera show or afternoon Chicago Symphony Concert, or a day trip to the city.

Disappointed...

By Eric L |

I usually don't spend time reporting my negative judgement on Internet but because of the circumstances I could not vent my disappointment live. I had invited a customer to Le cafe des architectes based on reviews in TripAdvisor. The decoration is beautiful, the staff very friendly and Competent. Atmosphere: fantastic. I was looking forward to sharing this French cuisine experience with my guest. We both picked the foie gras. The visual presentation was great but seriously the foie gras was not. Seemed to come from a "bloc" rather than from a complete liver. I was in France 3 days before and I could buy a better one in a supermarket at€20 for 200g...this one was acidic, simply unacceptable for a restaurant of that level. I was honestly ashamed but I didn't want to ruin the moment with my guest so I shut up. The duck was very good. Then we both picked the "mini parisien dessert": average, it just doesn't feel like it was just prepared... Maybe they can't make such desserts fresh on the spot but then don't offer them.. I feel sorry for the staff to make a negative review but I seriously hope the chef steps up his game. For $100 per head, I was just.... Disappointed

Excellent meail

Service was attentive. The meal, lamb duo, was superb -- the best rack of lamb I've enjoyed in a long time.

Contemporary classic french

A French standby in the Sofitel. Nicely presented and well flavored food. Had a very good duck breast. Service is excellent - professional and discreet. Nice wines by the glass. Cheese program balances local versus French imports - so nice choices. Good place for quiet business meal in very clean contemporary space.

Great food a little pricey for PV

I thought the food was great I would have liked if they had more of an open are feel when we went there is feel a little stuffy and being on vacation I would have loved being more outside.

Good Food & Service

We dined here on our first night in Chicago, so we weren't at our best. However, the pleasant service and good food were very pleasant. We had a number of small plates in whuch the octopus and the pea ravioli stood out as excellent. Not cheap, but worth it.

A must stay if you are in Chicago!

Love this hotel. Rooms are beautiful and the staff is amazing. It is definitely our preferred place to stay.

We loved this place!

This hotel is a great find. Convenient location one short block from Michigan avenue and water tower place. Near bus lines. Lovely lobby with flower arrangements that are among the best I have seen at any hotel anywhere! The rooms were comfortable. Nice linens, great bed, good lighting. Ice on every floor. The bathroom was well appointed with a shower and tub. Nice toiletries. The staff was very pleasant and the three concierges that were on duty were all very informative, we had a great stay and would not hesitate to go back to this gem! Not a five star.. No nightly turn down service. But definitely almost a 5 star in every other way!

Gourmet lunch

By mrosco |

We stayed at the Sofitel for six nights and had the pleasure of eating breakfast here daily. We knew that lunch and dinner had to be equally as good, if not better. We ended up having lunch as the day we wanted to have dinner they were installing new carpet in the restaurant and it wasn't available. Lunch was incredible. We started out with a board of Charcuterie that is made in house. The cured meats and cheeses were fantastic. The breads served were equally as impressive. I had the Ahi Tuna on a hummus salad and my wife the fixed price executive lunch. Both were extremely good. Her executive lunch came with soup, salad, entree and dessert all brought out at the same time in a beautiful presentation. For $24 it was the best value. The food was absolutely incredible. I highly recommend stopping in for breakfast, lunch or dinner or all of the above. You will not be disappointed.

Exquisite French Cuisine in the Windy City!

By Retrorebe |

A short distance from Water Tower Place off the Magnificent Mile, is Cafe des Architectes. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Sofitel hotel. Not usually a fan of hotel restaurants, I approached the experience with skepticism. It was easily replaced with the atmosphere and the sights and smells of meals delivered to other customers. As the ambiance settled in, my husband and I decided to order the five course meal with wine pairings. Additionally, we requested to receive different menu items from each other with every course. The experience exceeded our expectations. The wine pairings were worldly and unabashedly complimented each course. Our favorite courses were steeped in French tradition with a contemporary flare including the foie gras, sweetbreads, duck, and lamb. The service was attentive but not overbearing. As we engaged in conversation with a couple next to us, the staff adjusted to our change of pace. A fabulous way to end our visit to the Windy City. Bon appetite!

Highly recommended

Luxurious and accommodating, the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower offered a slice in European sophistication in grand downtown Chicago. The staff was courteous and very helpful and the room was spotless. I also attended a conference there and found the amenities were terrific. I would gladly return.

Great breakfast and terrace

By Guillaumeleconqueran |

A superb place to have breakfast or lunch in summertime. While staying at the Westin, I decided to go there for breakfast. I enjoyed it so much that I went two days in a row. Their basket of viennoiseries is very good. It containes two fluffy croissants, one pain au chocolat, one brioche and two small bread buns. Their juices are freshly squeezed. I had the Bene with "pastrami" smoked salmon (a weird description, even the waitress confirmed that clients are confused). My poached eggs were slightly overcooked to my liking. Very good hollandaise sauce. The coffee is a little bit weak to North-American standards. The terrace is nicely decorated with nice flower beds. French speeking guests will find a copy of le Figaro and Le Monde.

Great Choice

This is a wonderful choice if you want a nice quiet atmosphere and excellent French/American food. Service is excellent and staff is welcoming and accommodating. Can eat inside or outside.

Very Nice!

Lovely restaurant; excellent service; nice, but limited menu; very good food. An amuse bouche of truffle-flavored egg custard with caviar was an interesting taste, though not something I would eat a lot of. The crab cakes first course were fantastically wonderful. The chicken Ballantine was very good, though I thought that the sauce was just a bit thick, could have used a teaspoon more liquid. Prices were normal for this level of restaurant. I will be back.

You are missing out

Food and service is excellent provided you like smaller portions and French flair for cooking. I have eaten breakfast and dinner here and both have been very good.
