Fresh Find

By bph2o |

Recently invited to dinner at Cabezon Restaurant, Mid Northeast Portland. It is in a quaint if smallish storefront - but with an expanded interior. The inside is delightful in its feel and flavor. The staff was extremely helpful, gracious and informative. The food was varied and all meals were delicious - it is rated as a seafood restaurant but the menu offers much more than just "surf". It is small so reservations are recommended but worth their while. Wine list is nice and prices for both food and drink are very reasonable. Check It out! You won't be disappointed.

So-So Seafood

By NickK7501 |

Cute little restaurant with attractive bar. The mac and cheese appetizer was huge - certainly enough for two to share. The cioppino was just okay. A handful of small pieces of seafood swimming in some sort of sauce. One small bathroom means always a wait. Our waitress only made infrequent visits. In fact, we had four different people serving us. Parking a bit of a challenge but area neighborhoods offer options.

It's been a long while since my last vist but my 2018 review still holds true

By Zaxes |

I'm sad and happy. Sad that I live out of town and had to wait so long for this wonderful dining place. I'm happy to report that everything that I said in 2018 still holds true. It's a dinner that from start to finish is worthy of the excellent rating. Those of you that live in Portland are lucky and should take advantage of this dining gem.

Consistantly good food

By tougo |

We eat here several times a year and are always happy with the food and service we receive. The specials are always great, but you need to get in early because they sell out quick. If you want to visit and hang out with the owners a seat at the bar is the best place in the house. There are a couple of cozy window tables as well.

Might be the best fish I ever had

By jim z |

Rainy Saturday nite. Overnight stay in Portland and early anniversary dinner but did not plan well in advance. Found reviews of Cabezon on-line including trip advisor....and discovered it was not far from the hotel. Drove there a little after 6 pm thinking we would not get in....my wife went in ahead to find if there was a chance to get in to eat while I looked for parking (which was a struggle). Got seats at the bar - almost like chef's table. Excellent service and very helpful staff. Found they had Sturgeon on the menu and some other nice things....too late - they were out of the sturgeon...but were substituting a whole branzino grilled. took a chance.....got some off menu app of smoked sturgeon - great.......but the best was the substituted grilled fish.....fish perfectly cooked...and the skin was crispy and tasty. wife had lamb chops- which were good but did not compare to my fish. We talked about that fish for days...could not stop thinking about how good it was....and the staff was great. even with drinks, apps, meals...our bill was not as high as I thought it might be with such good reviews. We recommend it highly and look forward to our next trip maybe the fresh caught flounder me and my dad caught and friends cooked while camping near Plymouth rock was better...but then again I was only twelve and that was several decades ago....

I now know why this restaurant is rated #1

By Sgfnancy |

Do not miss this restaurant! We're in town on business and I found this on TripAdvisor. We wanted seafood and it did not disappoint. The Cioppino was fantastic! Everything about this place from the glass blown jellyfish lights over the bar to the seriously cool bathroom - it was a definite hit. We're coming back on Sunday to try something different on the menu.

Happy to have found this gem.

By LOMike |

We came here during March--the $33 pris fixe menu month in Oregon. We had never tried Cabezon before--but we will be back. The salt cod fritters were fabulous, the cioppino was filled with a variety of good seafood and shellfish with a spicy base that was bowl-licking good. The ginger case for dessert was a perfect finish. The server was attentive, pleasant and extraordinarily well informed about the menu and the wine selection was very nice. We shall return!

Oh, wow!

By cwintersplatt |

We stopped in based on reviews on this site. This is one of the best meals we have had in years. If you are in NE Portland, and like seafood, this is a must visit. We had a seafood carpaccio done with watermelon, peppers and cucumber, then the caesar salad, the prawns wrapped in phyllo dough, and the fries. Every dish was wonderful. Finished off with the berry shortcake, which tasted like the shortcake was baked to order. We will certainly be back again when we are back in Portland. A very good value for the quality of the food.

Yes!

By Jazzgal67 |

This restaurant was utterly outstanding. From the appetizers to the delicious rhubarb strawberry shortcake, not a thing on the menu was a disappointment. So very tasty.

Good food, nice ambiance, slow service

By Mary R |

We went to Cabezon to celebrate our birthdays. When the reservationwas made, we notified staff of that, but they did not acknowledge it - at all. A bit disappointing. That said, the food was good and the drinks were also good. Not an excellent night, but would probably go back again. I had a monkfish dinner and my friend had the lamb. The place fills up, so either make a reservation or expect to wait.

Best Portland restaurant!

By Barbra Fink |

What a wonderful taste experience! Small menu but everything was delicious! Pate and ceaser salad were spot on! Best pork chop I've ever had with a bourbon au ju and it melted in my mouth. The lemon ice cream and sugar cookie reminded me of my Mom's lemon curd and Christmas cookies. Chopin was loaded with shell fish and a tasty rich broth. Can't wait to go back!

Delicious seafood, quiet meal

By Sillydg |

We love this small neighborhood restaurant. The seafood is great, and there are always some meat entree available. Good bar and very friendly staff. We keep coming back!

Great Food and Great Service

By MXSCHWARZ |

Came here for my final vacation meal before we headed to the airport Saturday night. What a way to end our stay in Oregon. My wife had the cod and I had the sea bass on jambalaya with crab andouille. For desert we shared an order of the house made huckleberry ice cream sandwiches. Everything was prepared perfectly, the food was delicious, and the service was on point. Our server paid the right amount of attention to us and we were there for two hours and we weren't rushed at all to leave so someone else could have our table. I definitely would recommend this place but make reservations.

a delightful Valentine's Day Dinner

By Prairiedog17 |

We went to Cabezon for the first time for dinner on Valentine's day with another couple. The drinks were interesting and strong. The salads were well prepared and interestingly presented. The dinners were really wonderful, some of the best food I have had recently. All four of us had seafood dishes and each was tasty and excellently presented. And the deserts were stellar as well. A really pleasant way to celebrate with friends. I highly recommend dining at Cabezon!

Most amazing mussels I've ever had!!!

By Dondett R |

Wish this place was in Rochester, Minnesota!!!! Very well decorated with a great vibe. A hidden spot for locals, this place is a MUST dine!! Just GO! Started with the smoked sturgeon appetizer. Delicious! Husband had the ling cod and I had the mussels with fries and chorizo. OMG I was in heaven. GLUTEN FREE!!!! Our service was excellent from Jill, who was very helpful in recommending and guiding me for GF options. Thank you JILL for your advice!!! Eating out for celiacs can be frightening and Cabezon delivers. Kudos to the Chefs and front of house staff!!!

Limited Menu Choices a Real Plus!

By Mike D |

I visited this place with my wife and another couple. We tried the Sole, Oysters, Basil-Wrapped Shrimp, and Lamb. Each was presented well, fresh and delicious. The service was excellent. Portions were small, which I think is great. I'm not a fan of large plates full of food, which end up being tossed or doggy-bagged. The dinner choices are limited, and I think the menus are rewritten on an almost-daily basis. Cabezon is a typical neighborhood seafood bistro with basic seasonal offerings from local producers.

Very pleasant evening Good food and service

By Nigel4921 |

Nice casual local spot. We had the cioppino and some snook. Both nicely prepared and tasty, Might have hoped for a bit more crab in the cioppino but overall good. Helpful and friendly servers. Fairly noisy

Mussels and Fries, please.

By DoctorM |

Portland is becoming famous as a food destination and you will find most of the best restaurants in the neighborhoods where the rent is cheaper than downtown. An excellent example is Cabezon found just off Sandy Blvd in Northeast Portland. Cabezon means a scorpion fish ( or a stubborn person) in Spanish and you might guess that they specialize in seafood. It is a small restaurant with a comfortable but elegant feel. A few tables are located outside exposed to the noise of Sandy Blvd. We started with a dozen oysters from Netarts Bay in Oregon which were fresh, cold, mineraly, and perfect. $3 each. This was accompanied by a delicious multigrain bread served with sweet butter and topped with large salt flakes. A romaine and radicchio Caesar salad is topped with shredded grana padano cheese and is definitely large enough to share for two. But the highlight of the meal was the huge bowl of steamed mussels served with borlotti beans, a chorizo sausage flavored with smoked spanish paprika, and then topped with a small mountain of crispy french fries and saffron-garlic aioli. Absolutely fabulous and definitely a dish you want to share. And you will want to order some more of that bread to sop up the broth. A bottle of modestly priced Sauvignon Blanc from Staggs Leap in Napa was a great compliment to the seafood.

Fabulous!

By goldore |

So glad we visited Cabezon for dinner. The basil shrimp appetizers were divine, the classic Caesar salad was fresh and cold, and the ling cod with purple potatoes and fried cauliflower was wonderful!!! The chef really has a gift with flavorful, balanced, subtly flavored and amazingly textured combinations. Our server, Norman, was friendly and attentive. Overall excellent service. Definitely will return. Love finding great new places 😄

Salty Food & Undercooked fish

By MichaelMina |

My food was really salty. From the french fries to the fish that I ordered. I was drinking 4 cups of water to get it out of my system. The fish was super undercooked. I wish I took it back and ordered the trout but I didn't want to be picky.

What a great bistro--

By shewholovestoeat |

This place flew under my radar, somehow, so glad I found it. We did dining month here, and it is also one of the best meals I have had. Anywhere. The cioppino was superb. Large serving, full of seafood and a full dungeness crab leg on top. YUM. The 2nd dish was yellow eye cod. Cooked so well. Moist and flaky. Great flavors on both dishes. Started the meal with salt cod fritters. Great appetizer with a frisee style salad under, and a tasty sauce for the fritter. The dessert was a warm ginger cake with pear and a caramel sauce. Good! Great service, and a value for sure on dining month. The place is adorable. Nice bar area, and good decor. GO!! PS--we started with cocktails, a martini for me, and they handstuff their olives.

Foodie's Delight with Cozy Neighborhood Feel

By DrQuinnVA |

We had a fabulous meal at Cabezon. It is easy to get to in Northeast Portland - away from the hustle and bustle of city center. The food is locally sourced and everything, except the bread, is made on site. We sampled the Chive Blinis, Kale-Radicchio Caesar Salad, the catch of the day, and the lavender-honey Creme Brulee. Everything served in a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Wonderful Food

By KARTISTtraveler |

Great food. Service a little slow, so prepare for a evening of dining. Seafood dishes are very tasty and wine selection fabulous.

Ate there twice this week!,,

By willy35 |

Cool neighborhood vibe....great cocktails cioppino is unbelievable! Small plates are also awesome. A must stop if you are in the airport area.

What a great dinner

By John A |

As advertised you get a great selection of choices. The plates were well designed and a pleasure to disturb. Excellent wait staff and friendly people . You get a good taste from start to finish

Cioppino, Cioppino, Cioppino

By Barry G |

Catching the Red Eye back to NYC, so I looked for a restaurant near the airport and was fortunate to have had the best meal during my 5 weeks in Oregon. Cioppino, Cioppino, Cioppino - I have never tasted better - even the Cioppino I myself make. Must be the fresh local ingredients. The Scallops and Creme Brulee were also delicious and couldn't get enough Oysters. I rate my meal with that I've had at Le Bernardin.

Sumptuous and exquisite

By duane schaad |

It was a big group and the food was amazing from start to finish... the service was superb in that courses kept coming with never any gaps, empty glasses or bottles! Simply put, it couldn't have been tastier or more satisfying.

Good food, VERY slow service

By tmilne |

Four of us ate at Cabezon on 7/20/2015. All of our entries were very good to excellent. Once our orders were taken, however, it felt like we were forgotten. The food was very slow in coming out. When we were done with entries, it took another long time to be asked we wanted dessert. We did, and they took a while to appear. And that's the last we saw of our waitress. I had to hail someone clearing a table to request our bill. To their credit, our waitress... when we saw her... was warm and polite. But something wasn't right - either in the staffing levels or in the motivation of our server. If you don't want a 2 hour dining experience, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

Hidden, But find it! You will be happy!

By jtimbo |

We are summer visitors and went to Cabezon last year, and even though we love to try all the fabulous restaurants in Portland, this has become one of our favorites! We just returned from another fabulous dinner with our friends. We all agreed that every dish we had was outstanding, creative, well flavored, and a very attractive presentation! One delicious Halibut, two had Snook (fish I am not familiar with) that I will look forward to having again and one had the summer variety of a pork chop....Each had really good sides, like mine had this incredible couscous with a grilled petite peach, and someone had a corn relish, and I don't remember all the sides. We all had a caesar salad of Romaine and Radicchio with a really delicious caesar. We loved it and would highly recommend Cabezon. You won't be sorry!

Exceptional seafood

By Foodtwosome |

Our party of six devoured two and a half dozen oysters before dinner. They were great. I had the ciopinnio -- which we were told was always on the menu -- as did several others which almost lived up the the rave reviews others have given it (Dungeness crab was a bit tasteless) with fresh, perfectly cooked shrimp, good number of mussels and great aoili. Monkfish also drew high praise. Just two salads listed among appetizers. Both had lovely presentation and were well received. Only two non-fish entrees. Am going to have to go back to try couple other appetizers and the sturgeon or mussels. Great service. Based upon cocktails we had, the bartender knows his/her craft. Desserts were great, although chocolate overwhelmed the Makers Mark Ice Cream

Great Spot

By Cachims |

Tried this place with my wife on our anniversary. We had a delightful experience. Great cocktails, good food and great service. I had the lamb and my wife had the Ciopino, both were excellent.

Fine Dining

By 2again |

I've enjoyed Cabezon several times over the past few years. It's always a great experience. This last visit I simply had a cocktail, a wine, a Caesar salad ( which was very generous in proportion), and a shrimp appetizer. It was all excellent and plenty of food.

Service?

By ernestBT48 |

I met an old friend for dinner here at her suggestion recently. I had dined in Cabezon some years prior and was looking forward to it. This is chiefly a fish restaurant with a nice menu, attractive ambiance and terrific wine list. There are ample choices on the menu. On the night I went in (a Tuesday), there was about a 50-60% occupancy. The food (Alaskan Halibut) was terrific as a main course. Fries and garlic mayonnaise are offered as a starter, however, and not a good choice: a large plate of fries - even shared - does much to quell the appetite. I had difficulty finishing the fish. The accompanying bed of ?fennel was a tad under-cooked and crunchy. The major criticism is the service. We had a drink to start and unfortunately had to flag the waiter down at each step to process the evening. No water refills, he seemed busy elsewhere much of the time and we frankly felt ignored. Overall, not a great experience, but salvation in quality fish albeit with the limitations as stated. More staff needed?

Delicious Seafood!

By Deborah H |

Cabezon is a small intimate restaurant that specializes in local seafood. The environment welcoming and quiet enough for conversation among a group of 5. The romaine radicchio salad was crisp and perfectly dressed. Our favorite dishes were the mussels with chorizo and the cioppino. The servers were friendly and attentive to our needs. YUM!

Cabezon deserves six stars

By MTTravelbug |

The three of us agreed Cabezon has the best seafood we have had - ever. In various dishes we had mussels, oysters, clams, crab, shrimp, cavier, and cod. Each prepared and accompanied perfectly whether it was sauce, breads or veg. The creme brûlée' and chocolate pot were also outstanding. We had the recommended wines and the pairing was spot on. Highly recommend. Service was good, we always had what we needed without hovering.

Once again, a great dinner!!l

By Traveler611745 |

Ive been here several times now, both by myself and with friends. I’ve never had a bad meal, I feel like I’ve tried almost everything. On this last visit, I finally tried the Cioppino and it was to. die. for. Did you know they make their own seafood stock? It’s layered with flavors and packed with fresh local seafood. Don’t forget about the fresh bread to soak up all the yummyness. Gotta try the Pear-a-noid cocktail and have the fresh summer berry shortcake for dessert!

Nice, quaint OK food

By Avery Martinez |

Went there with friends because their fav was closed. It's kind of out of the way but easy to get to on a side street. Bar is nice, good GF offerings and were very cooperative in converting plates to Gf. Oysters were excellent, Ciapino was really good, my wife had Shrimp served over lentils, she wasn't impressed, said it was just Ok. Have a limited IPA offering, surprising considering the number of Oregon IPAs. Desert was good but expensive. Dinner for 4 $200 with tip. Was still hungry, came back to the hotel and made a sandwich. Nice place and bar but a little over rated and over priced. Very unique bathroom with a really nice pewter fish bowl sink.

Delicious

By Julie M |

We were fortunate to be within walking distance of Cabezon from our vacation rental. The weather was beautiful so we dined outside. The cocktails were unique (small batch whiskeys & gins) as were our dinner options. Dessert was exceptional- honey lavender creme brûlée. Had we found this restaurant our first night we may have repeated.

O M G .... exit downtown and try this place!!!!

By Ernie B |

The reviews don’t lie. Wonderful neighborhood gem outside of downtown in the Hollywood are (NE part of the city). Incredible!!! Fresh and creative cuisine at its finest!!! The bilini are interesting, oysters lovely and the big eye tuna salad appetizer were wonderful. Salmon and Cioppino were lick you plate delightful!!! Drinks, service, desert, after dinner wine ALL excellent. If I lived in Portland I’d buy a home in this neighborhood and dine here weekly. ❀

Queen

By Connector322764 |

Eight of us went to Cabezon for my husbands birthday. We had early dinner reservations and I called ahead to make sure we could bring his birthday cake. It has a very impressive interior but stops there. The staff treated us as though we were interfering with their evening and the service was not what we expected. Since it was a birthday celebration a smile would have been appreciated. Actually the staff acted like a roomfull of disgruntled employees. I questioned the cost of cutting the cake at $3 per person and the manager was rude and questioned my honesty. What happened to ‘the customer is always right’? I will say the food was tasty but I’ve had better. If this establishment is trying to be upscale it has a long way to go.

Perfection

By cindykW389KM |

We had the mac and cheese, caesar salad, cioppino, and scallops with gnocchi. This is some of the BEST food I've had in a restaurant! Interesting, no salt or pepper on the table, because it was seasoned to perfection! Reasonable prices, friendly staff, quiet enough to chat... simply a noteworthy meal. Highly recommend!

Fantastic seafood

By Kerry G |

For the second year in a row, a reservation led to a fantastic dinner. Restaurant appears to be a local gem as it is filled with locals not tourists. Dining can be outside or inside, not a large space but excellent. Children have been seen there.

Excellent seafood in a quiet neighborhood setting

By SharonIndianapolis |

We thoroughly enjoyed dining at Cabezon. The food was outstanding -- we enjoyed local oysters on the half shell, Cesar salad followed by cioppino with fresh local seafood and a Petrale sole entree. The service was great.

Thought it would be better

By richard g |

Having seen the local ratings and enjoyed dinner there about two years ago, we decided to go again for a night out. Loved the atmosphere and the service and some of our order was delicious but we had hoped for more seafood options. Desert of course was delicious however...

Excellent seafood

By Catherine c |

A little bit of a drive from downtown but well worth it for super fresh seafood. We had Oysters and local seafood specials. Everything was top notch with just enough in the way of seasonings and vegetables to enhance but not overwhelm the flavor of the fish. The wine list was also full of good local choices with thoughtful servers to help you. My top earthing experience in Portland

Not as superb as we anticipated

By porter_osborne |

Our group of 4 arrived a bit early for our reservation and found there to be no good place to sit while waiting for our table, a couple of had benches in high traffic areas to kitchen. Once seated service was very good as was food. The group had everything from salmon, scallops, to cioppino, to lamb, as well as desserts. Everything was very nice. Simply was not as excellent as described in the reviews.

Heated Patio, Good Food

By HumJer |

COVID Seating: Cabezon has done a great job of still offering covered, heated, outdoor seating during the pandemic. The seats near the entrance can be a bit drafty during a storm, but it's otherwise a fantastic patio. Food: Their signature Cioppino dish includes fantastic additions of quality seafood. It has a strong spice (likely Chinese Five Spice) in the dish. The lamb with goat cheese dumplings was probably our favorite. Drinks and dessert is solid as well.

Great find off the beaten path

By tammilip |

Made plans to dine at Cabezon based on TA reviews. No locals (professional travel people) had even heard of it because it is not in the downtown touristy areas. Go a little out of your way to find this restaurant and it will be worth it. The cioppino was delicious! Service was friendly and attentive. The only reason this is not 5 stars to me is the limited menu and limited wines by the glass selection, especially local OR wines. But please check them out!

Very fine fresh seafood

By S C |

Small and mostly seafood menu. Our group had cioppino (need more bread to soak up the great broth), fat mussels with chorizo and crisp fries, pan seared sturgeon, lamb chops. All was very well prepared, high quality and tasty food. Beautifully plated presentation. Nice local wine and beer list. Great place to bring family, friends, visitors. Attentive staff too. Definitely will return to this neighborhood gem.

Trip Advisor Score

By Bootdr1 |

Cabezon is excellent. Driving south in Washington we found we would be in Portland at 7:30. Looked up restaurants and noted this one. From the moment we entered the place we knew it was a good choice. The Romaine endive Caesar salad was dressed to the t's. Yes garlic. The chiopino was as good as it gets. Beer prices were super. The amber ale from Bend rocked.

Last Dinner in Portland

By djb30633 |

We had a very nice table in the wine room. It was situated so we could actually talk to each other. Nice wine selection and we each had a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The salad my wife had was great and my seafood stew was wonderful! We would go again. Note parking is a little hard to find close to the restaurant.

Great Meal

By Will T |

The Excellent rating is accurate! We thoroughly enjoyed the meal including the phyllo wrapped shrimp and salmon. Even the fries were a cut above. Highly recommend this place...

A pleasant Surprise - Fish Restaurant in Portland

By kencoutts |

We found this restaurant and can say it was an excellent choice. Food and service of a high quality. Yes, the mains were somewhat limited in choice but we enjoyed very much. Pleasant ambiance and unobtrusive staff provided excellent service. The 4 of us all had something different and each was a delight. We sought guidance as to local wines with an excellent choice recommended. This was a very successful evening and our hosts will return. Our choice was a winner and very pleased to recommend.

Excellent food

By js972 |

It was one of the best dinners we had for a long time. Fresh, inventive and surprising. The service was great and the atmosphere was very pleasant. This place is one of the reasons we'd like to visit Portland again.

Excellent dish

I had an excellent seafood dish along with appetizers and desserts. The service was awesome and the food was great. I would return if I'm visiting Portland again.

Finding good seafood

By Trevor H |

We were looking for a good seafood restaurant and saw the TA reviews for this restaurant. Glad we went as we had excellent food. I had cioppino which was very good with one exception - too spicy. The others in our party had basil shrimp over lentils and salads which they were very happy with.

Delightful

By Share G |

We have had dinner at Cabezon several times. The menu is varied and always contains local fish & vegetables. The layered flavors and combinations are incredibly creative and filled with mouth watering flavor. We plan to return soon!

high quality food and wine for a quiet evening

By Sondra G |

Cabezon is a great choice for high quality food with a very nice atmosphere. We were especially happy to be somewhere that was quiet enough that we could hold a normal conversation. The food is mostly fish, but there are options for people who just have to have their meat. The highlights were the mussels appetizer with chorizo and fries, and the people who ordered the Cioppino were thrilled. We had one very picky eater in our group, and even she was very happy with her fish.

Well done

By Goldinlondon2012 |

Great meal on the way to the Portland airport for an evening flight! Seafood was outstanding as were the salads. Pink lemonade was a real treat and unexpected.

Gourmet seafood worth the trip

By jvj24601 |

Cabezon is a cozy restaurant about a 10 minute Uber ride east of downtown. But it is well worth the ride. For starters, the blini with trout caviar was spectacular. This was followed by a large mound of huge mussels, topped with fries and a yellow sauce... some of the best mussels we've ever had. Entrees were the delicious cioppino with a finely crafted broth and albacore tuna on a bed of kale souffle, cooked to perfection. Cabezon is well deserving of their strong reviews.

Great meal

By David R |

My wife and I were visiting a friend and after reading reviews on Tripadvisor decided to take her here for dinner. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, as was the service. My only disappoint was that they were out of oysters, but then we dined a little late, 8 or 8:30. We each had a different dish and all were very good and well presented. Our friend absolutely raved over her pork chops and my wife was not far behind on her lamb chops. My fish was very delicious. Good chance I would go here again next time I am Portland.

It’s OK

By atherts |

We wanted to try something new so we gave Cabezon a try after hearing good things. The cocktails were good with some unusual options. They were decently sized for about $11. The chive blinis were tasty, but only three left me wanting more. The house cut fries were very good with a tasty aioli. The mains were just average. The dumplings with the lamb were a bit doughy. The Thai style sole was overpowered by the sauce. I was hoping for a light red curry, but it was more like what you’d find on drunken nooodles and overwhelmed the fish. Service was excellent. It wasn’t bad, but for about $100 I hoped for more. Oh well.

Great find in NE Portland

By OrebudJD |

We were looking for a good dinner after a long day and found Cabezon on Trip advisor and decided to try it based on reviews It was Saturday night at 7:30, so the only seats they had were at the bar but that was fine plus you could watch the open kitchen. They also had a seat outside but the inside ambience was so pleasant that we chose the bar. I elected a cocktail called mint condition which was amazing and refreshing. Well made and well served. My husband had ginger beer that was exquisite. For an appetizer we shared a special sautéed soft shell crab on Asian salad, which was plentiful and delicious. For entrees, I had sea bass on jambalaya with crab andouille and my husband had the shrimp appetizer served on glass noodles which was as large as my fish. For desert we shared an order of profiteroles with housemade banana ice cream. Delectable. I also had an amazing glass of Washington State cab-merlot that seemed a steal quality wise at only $11. Even better than the food, which was perfectly prepared and presented, was the fact that the staff was friendly and attentive and welcoming and portions were just right and beautifully presented. The bill was well under $100 including the bar tab! We will go back for sure. I canny say I have had a better meal in quite a while.

Milestone Birthday Dinner

By Guido K |

Very memorable dinner. We were a group of 14, celebrating a milestone birthday. The chef was very flexible with the menu, customising to everyone's taste. The philo wrapped prawns were very memorable, among the starters, as well as the steak, lamb, striped sea bass, etc. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. Service was impeccable. One of the best dining experiences in the last 15 years, while visiting Portland.

My favorite seafood restaurant

By cinzia2011 |

Having come here many times over 7? years, I almost always get the cioppino (fabulous) but this time I ordered the Hawaiian Ono which was spectacular! Squid ink fideo noodles with lots of yummy vegetables and mushrooms, just a perfect mix. Oysters are always delicious, so was the cheese plate and pot de creme. I've had the profiteroles on other occasions and loved them too. We have never been disappointed with anything here. AND, you can have a conversation without yelling! Definitely not only my favorite seafood restaurant but one of about 3 overall favorites in Portland for fine dining. Oh, and I almost forgot, the bread is delicious!

Outstanding food!

By eliciakaroly |

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant on our trip to Portland and it was exceptional. We had super fresh delicious oysters, and our drinks were fantastic. Our entrees were cooked to perfection and seasoned so well. I would highly recommend! And we can’t wait to return!!

Welcome home, comfort, convenient, and cozy

By srnwood |

Landed in Portland on a Friday evening at 5:30. Found Cabezon by searching for places near the airport. It was an quick trip to the restaurant during rush hour and we appreciated not having to get in the standstill traffic on 205. Parking was tight on the small, neighborhood streets near the restaurant, but Nicole learned to drive in Paris so we had no trouble shoehorning ourselves in. So much about this dining experience was memorable. The night was quite blustery and I only had a thin sweater on, so I especially appreciated the warm welcome inside this cleanly casual establishment. We had an intimate window table and my seat was a bench with a high back and a velvet pillow. Sweet, cozy, warmed the cockles of my heart kind of feel. Our server was the best of the best. Efficient, kind, and not at all overly present. We started with inventive drinks. I had a lovely squash soup-- just perfect in texture and taste. Nicole, remember she's a Parisian, gave high marks to the pate. Dinner was timed and served exactly when we were ready. The wine list was extensive. Both fish and beef were just right. Thinking about the next trip to the airport and another excuse to return to Cabezon soon.

Great food

By Laura H |

Great neighborhood place. Portions are very nicely sized. Food was very tasty. Very nice combination of flavors. The lamb and sea bass which were excellent. Definitely go again when we travel to Portland again. Server knowledgeable and took care of us.

Busy place

By KrisM129 |

Be prepared to walk. No parking for blocks. Popular with the locals, so that speaks well for the place. Great food, decent prices.

Fresh well prepared fish

By mitch w |

We loved this restaurant. Mussels were perfectly prepared. Can't beat the salad, fresh and tasty. We had the sturgeon, which is not my favorite fish; but given that, it was perfectly prepared. Nice wine list st; we enjoy d our Anne Amie Pinot Gris. Reservations recommended. Moderately priced.

Best Seafood Restaurant in Portland

By Pat C |

Portland has a lot of good seafood places but this is my favorite. Spanish influenced food but mostly just well prepared and fresh. Nice bar and good selection of wines. Located outside the core of the city but close to the airport if you are looking for good food but needing to go to the airport for a departure or just arriving with a friend.

Beyond amazing!

By Kathleen L |

it was our first time to this restaurant but recommended by our family. We tried a little bit of everything to make sure that we sampled a cross-section of the offerings. We started out with the Blinis with trout caviar and creme fraiche and their special appetizer Asian butterfish. Then two of us had their cream of celery soup. For mains we had the lamb, pork chop, grouper and phylo-wrapped prawns. The service was a touch slow but that suited us as we needed to have a family discussion over the meal. The food was as the title says beyond amazing!

Amazing Meal at Cabezon

By TheDBTX |

I found Cabezon through Tripadvisor. Flying into PDX on a trip to Newburg, OR, I was searching for a good seafood restaurant along my route. I decided to give Cabezon a try and booked a table for our party of 6. The atmosphere in the restaurant is warm and classy without any pretension. The blown glass jellyfish chandelier right above our table was awesome. Our server was friendly and attentive. She recommended an exceptional local wine from the extensive wine list. We enjoyed the house cut fries and mac n cheese appetizers. Both were delicious. The oysters were fresh and delightful. I had the cioppino entree and it was among the best I've had. Loaded with fish and excellently spiced. We all shared the whiskey ice cream profiteroles and creme brulee desserts and both were satisfying after a large meal. The only inconvenient aspect was the parking. Being from out of town, we weren't familiar with the area. There isn't much parking near the restaurant. After circling the block once, we ended up parking in the residential neighborhood behind the restaurant. It wasn't tough to find a spot once we realized this was the best option. Our entire party enjoyed the meal and applauded the choice of restaurant. I'd highly recommend Cabezon to anyone in the Portland area. A five-star experience at a very fair price!

Delicious and reliable

By ExperienceCollectorPDX |

I live in Portland and have been to Cabezon a few times. Its one of PDX's best and interesting fish places. The prices are definitely fair for quality fish, and the decor is fun.

Best Cioppino EVER

By pkchristensen |

Oh my gosh, this was the best meal I've had in a really long time. I asked the waiter for some red pepper flakes because I usually have to add some to cioppino to get the flavor I like. The waiter said he didn't think I'd need it, but brought some to the table anyway. He was RIGHT. It was perfectly seasoned and the fish was excellent. I would have this meal once a week at least if I could.

Great place for fresh seafood splurge

By Hiker-7 |

Stopped here for an early dinner while in town for a conference. Great seafood with fresh local ingredients. Mussels and fish were really fresh. Nice atmosphere, good service. The place fills up so get reservations if you want to eat during busy times. A more expensive than some places but really good food.

Definitely Going Again!

By richard g |

Although a bit of a drive for us we wanted to try something new and were focused on seafood. What a nice, great surprise to discover Cabezon😄 Every dish we had between the five of us was delicious and the ambiance and service was great. Wish we had room for desert but we will leave that for our return Enjoy

Great Food, Nice Menu

By Michael C |

This is not your typical "seafood" restaurant by any means. It's an excellent local NW Cuisine restaurant that specializes in fish. Everything on the menu that we tried was excellent and the with the grill right in front of the bar we could see the preparation of each meal and attest to its excellence. The drink menu is deep and the starters menu offers a lot of nice options to explore many different flavors and textures.

Top notch dinning!

By LantainLogan |

This lovely restaurant is top notch. It opens at 5:30pm for dinner and you are seated at every other table. Candlelight and privacy add to the ambiance. The menu evidently changes daily as we were given a new one. I had New York Steak cut in tips over wonderful potatoes with onion rings on top. Others in my party had lamb tips, and mussels. The presentation and quality of the meals was excellent. For desert, I had the pear crisp, and it was to die for. The creme brulee with lavander was also very good. It was a lovely super, and the service with very good.

Worth the Trip and every Dime!

By SnowGooseCalifornia |

Tucked away in a corner of NE Portland, this restaurant is worth a drive. Great decor and cozy atmosphere, the food and service and wine was spectacular--this is from a California foodie and wine lover. All four of us loved our meals: wonderful crusty bread and butter, delicious tomato soup, freshest of fresh oysters, pate to die for, an excellent pinot noir...lovely pan seared sand dabs, and my husband swore he had the best cioppino he had ever tasted. Lovely lavender-infused creme brulle and yummy chocolate pot de creme--we were raving and remembering for days. In a city of great food and wine, this is a dining experience not to be missed!

Great food, romantic atmosphere

By BenjaminV |

This small restaurant is within walking distance of my home, and I feel lucky to have such a nice little spot close by. The seafood is fresh and artfully prepared. Good cocktails and pleasant service make this a great experience.

All the food is so irritating.

By changyeon l |

All the food is so irritating. I and my family could not distinguish the taste of food from the irritating taste. Especially the source of the seafood dishes was so stimulating. All food is salty, sour and tangy. All the food is so irritating. The food with Trip Advisor always succeeded, but this time I was completely disappointed.

what a pleasant surprise!

By Basiluzzo |

In town for business and a colleague suggested we have dinner on the east side since she lives there and I'm staying with family there. She suggested this neighborhood favorite of hers and I'm so glad she did! The restaurant is intimate, cozy, not terribly noisy, with a pleasing casual decor. The service was attentive and well informed but gave us plenty of space. My cocktail was delicious and the choice of wines by the glass was reasonable. Prices were good, and the food ... ! Excellent. We shared a bowl of mussels as an appetizer, which were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Thank heaven for the excellent bread - we asked for more to keep sopping up the mussel broth. We both had the evening's special, which was sable fish, and enjoyed it very much, and the huckleberry ice cream dessert made my heart sing. I must sound over the top but I really, really enjoyed this meal!

First time here!

First visit here and we were not disappointed. Always love our trips to Portland, but we wish somebody like this would open up something on the other side of the river in Vancouver, Washington

Just Arrived for the Weekend

By Mark A |

Land at 3:00, rent a car ($$$$$) drive to Marriott and check in. Search for "seafood" and this place pops up. Looked like a likely possibility. Easy to make an "open table" reservation for 6:30. Local draft beer and a martini to start. Shrimp bisque. B+ (just a bit too salty) Cioppino with white gulf shrimp, local fish, Dungeness crab, Manila clams, mussels and calamari $26⁔⁰ A+ Totten Inlet Mussels with borlotti beans, Spanish chorizo, fries and rouille $16.50 A++ Both entrees were fabulous. The Cioppino is their headliner entree and it's truly a headliner. Mussels were great too, but the surprise were the fries with the mussels. They WERE THE BEST FRIES EVER!. We asked about them. They soak them, flash fry them, soak them again? Then fry again when served. Revisit, BEST EVER. If I lived here, I would definitely go back to work my way through the menu, which is printed daily, thus what you see on line isn't necessarily whats on for any given night. Nice bar, small and at 6:30 not a "Friday night after work place". Very nice wine list.

The Best Cioppino

By Margaret S |

This welcoming restaurant is a find outside the center of Portland. Menu choices, cocktails - creative and fresh. The Cioppino is out of this world: full of crab, clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, and fish - each cooked perfectly. Nice and spicy. Blini with trout caviar and fresh oysters also wonderful. Lovely service. We didn’t have room for dessert.

For The Love of Fish

By Fred C |

My wife and I went to dinner on a Sunday night (Yes they are open on Sundays) The waitress was very helpful in assisting us to understand their menu. We greatly enjoyed a chicken taco soup, an inventive sea food salad and a magnificent mussel entree. The food is top notch, and cooked to perfection. Anyone who likes seafood should give Cabezon a try.

Can taste the chef’s heart for the food

By Fazhi Z |

The waiters here is very professional. We think the inside areas is too loud for us and asked to sit outside. The waiter helped us to sit outside. The food we had were a stew and a baked fish. We love both of them.

Great seafood and service

By David20130609 |

We enjoyed out last meal here before our airplane ride to home. Wonderful restaurant and service. We sat in the back of the restaurant and enjoyed the quite evening. The cheese plate was just the right amount to get ready for some nice seafood. The tuna was out (7:00) so I order the mussels. Every mussel was perfect. My wife had the shrimp and loved it. We had a nice red wine. Great meal and service.

Thanks TripAdvisor

Thanks to TripAdvisor we found this place. Excellent service and really great seafood. The desserts were also top notch. Can't wait to try again. Only bad thing is parking.

Excellent Seafood meal and nice place

By Stew M |

I have had Cabezon on our list for a while and we finally made reservations and took a bottle of wine. The place is tiny and tucked back across the street from the Laurelwood Pub and Rhinelander. We were seated immediately. Our server got us drinks before we were ready for the wine. We both ordered seafood from a pretty limited, though varied menu that includes steak and lamb in addition to the seafood dishes. I opted for the Mahi Mahi special and my wife had the ling cod dish. Both dishes wee excellent, fresh and flavorful. Our server was excellent and very professional. She helped us with the choices throughout the meal. I can definitely see coming back here another time.

Cioppino to die for!

By Lori Z |

We were looking for great seafood and found it here! We had an unusual and delightful gazpacho for the appetizer ab the cioppino for seafood. It had a lovely broth, lots of seafood and cooked perfectly. There were many options on the menu we would have liked and nice space and art work.

Well done with a few surprises

By jerseymariner |

Four of us had a very nice dinner here on a Friday evening. The service was excellent, and the setting very comfortable. The menu has some surprises with a strong swing away from traditional Italian items. I was a bit disappointed to find the ciopinno was served without the usual pasta, and other entrees had a bit of an Asian feel, but all were excellent. They have a very well stocked bar with some creative cocktails and a good selection of my favorite after dinner drink, grappa, which is hard to find.

Very Nice Fish Restaurant

By Kim B |

The entree choices were limited but each choice proved to be very good. We had the petrale sole, ling cod and cioppino. Each were delicious in their own way. The portions were not generous but adequate. Service was perfunctory and unobtrusive. The ambiance was cozy with the sound level low enough to easily hear the people you came to the restaurant with. Who wants to hear everyone else’s conversation?

Wonderful dinner at Cabezon

By Sue B |

Went on Saturday night and had a great dinner. First time but not our last. Had a wonderful Caesar salad with great dressing - very fresh. Also tried the basil wrapped shrimp. I could have eaten two orders it was so good. It comes with glass noodles and vegetables. Also had the cioppino and the fish was very fresh. Friend had the fish dish and it was very good - great sauce. Two desserts - ginger cake and creme brulee. I tasted both the creme brulee was outstanding. The restaurant has comfortable chairs, was not noisy and the wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable.

First Rate Dining Experience

By bruceklein |

Second visit here and, again, high marks all around. Excellent server (Jill) knew her way around the wine list and did a great job. Blinis with sturgeon caviar were exceptional. Cioppino was hearty and well stocked with mussels, fish, and crab. Sturgeon was well prepared and tasty. Comfortable and unhurried we will dine here again.

Had an excellent dinner for two at Cabezon last night. Good drinks, excellent food, and attentive service. The blinis with crĂšme fraiche and trout caviar were to die for!

Never disappoints, always wonderful

By Ruth F |

Consistently delicious food and friendly, professional service in a cozy atmosphere. We’ve enjoyed Cabezon for the past decade and it never disappoints. Tonight, as always, fresh ingredients: perfectly crisp romaine in the Caesar salad with just the right amount of zesty dressing. Scrumptious fries on top of plump mussels in a lightly smoky broth. Beans and chorizo elevate that dish to a meal. The Cioppino is the go-to I look forward to. At a time when restaurants are following food trends and throwing anything out there, hoping it will stick, this tortoise vs the hare restaurant wins every time!

Amazing find!

By Eric H |

We went to Cabezon for our 22nd anniversary dinner last week and couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. I reviewed the menu ahead of time while scoping out the perfect restaurant, so I knew I wanted to try the Cioppino everyone was raving about. We decided on a couple of starters prior to the star and were delighted with our selection. We both shared the Artisan Cheese plate and the Caramelized Cana de Cabra. The cheese plate sampled three amazing cheeses and the most amazing sweet/tart quince. The salad was also delicious with the grilled goat cheese, local lettuces and fig vinaigrette. Then came the star of the show, a beautiful bowl of cioppino, full of perfectly prepared seafood and flavorful broth. While we shared the entire meal, it was plenty of food to satisfy not only our taste buds, but also our stomachs and brains --- this also left room for the sampling of two heavenly deserts. The first was the delicate and creamy CrÚme brulée, flavored with lavender and honey. The second was an amazingly decadent Pot de crÚme. All-in-all we were both thrilled with the Cabezon experience -- from the service to the exceptional food. Thank you for making our anniversary dinner special, we will definitely return the next time we are in Portland.

Best Fish

By Scott S |

A gem among the excellent Portland restaurants. Excellent value and solid service. I have dined here for years and always have an excellent meal and a strong well made cocktail. Decor is lively and elegant without being stuffy. If you are looking for a great meal that won't break the bank with the freshest oysters, fish, and to die for pot du creme for dessert look no further.

Delightful Seafood in NE PDX

By DougcpW |

New the the neighborhood, this restaurant combines a personal style with semi formal ambiance. The food is surprisingly good. Best among the dishes is the cioppino.

Wonderful!

By Mike G |

If you are looking for a great experience from the time you walk in the door, Cabezon is your place. The service was fantastic, the decor - especially the glass lighting - is eclectic and beautiful, the menu from start to finish offers a great mixture of delicious offerings, and the drinks are unique and effective. I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant and our dinner. We had a party of 4 and everyone of us commented on how delicious each creation was when we took a bite. From the French Fries, to the shrimp, to the Caesar salad, to the Cioppino, to the Mac and Cheese, to the lamb chop, we all raved about every bite. The only disappointment was we were so full we couldn’t try one of the delicious sounding deserts. Next time!

Try New Things

By h22101 |

We called for a reservation and when the woman heard that we had 13 people she said we'd have the new private party room. She also said the chef would be calling me. She promised to email me a menu, which she didn't do, but the day of the reservation the chef did call and we discussed the menu. I chose 3 main dishes and some appetizers and dessert - it was family style, which he suggested. Everything was both very interesting and very good. It was memorable. I'm not a tuna person, but this was the best tuna I'd ever had. The salmon was a hit and I should have ordered more of it. People also enjoyed the pork. It wasn't cheap, but not absurd either, and with the special service and a place where we could all talk and hear each other, it was worth it. Get into an adventurous mind-set and you'll have a good time.

Wow! Worth every penny!!

Outstanding mussles and I could drink the sauce! The drinks are yummy too. Go early because it gets busy quick.

Amazing meal

By Caroline W |

I found myself in Portland for work and immediately set to work looking for a great seafood restaurant that was a reasonable Uber ride away from my airport hotel. Fortunately, Trip Advisor led me in the right direction. I decided to visit Cabezon after salivating over reviews about the Mussels (a huge favorite of mine) and Cioppino (disappointed after a so-so rendition last time i was in San Francisco). I arrived on time for my reservation with a bottle of white wine (they charge $15 to cork the bottle) and ordered the Mussels. First thing to the table was a small plate with a couple of slices of brown bread and some butter. OMG - such a simple concept but the bread was incredible. I am a bread baker so appreciate every nuance of every crumb and this was dark and sweet and salty and soft and crusty all at the same time. Next up was the Mussels. A gorgeous dish of Mussels in a delicious broth that was enhanced with chorizo and black beans. DELISH. Did I mention I had also ordered the Cioppino? My thought was to eat what I could and take the leftovers back to my hotel to be reheated and enjoyed the following evening. What was I thinking???? I tasted the sweet, fresh fish and just continued to enjoy mouth after mouth of amazing fish flavors. Everything was SO good. I then found myself asking for more bread to dip (knowing full well that I was dangerously close to my comfortable "full" threshhold. Nevertheless, on I plowed until every delicious morsel of seafood was devoured and I decided to let the remainder of the broth go in favor of not exploding my stomach. As the plates were cleared, the wonderful waiter HAD to tempt me with a dessert menu. I don't believe there was any malicious intent at all, and I had to see if the Lavender Honey Creme Brulee was still on the menu. it was! I succumbed and made my best effort to consume the most amazing dessert ever. I failed - only because I was so stuffed that not another food morsel could make it past my mouth. Can't recommend more highly. Small but cute restaurant. Great service. The. Most. Amazing. Food.

Great menu, cool digs, nice service

By Scott M |

After a fair amount of research, we chose this place after a long travel day - we were not disappointed! Laurel was our terrific server and helped us pick a number of dishes. We started with the Totten Inlet Mussels with borlotti beans, Spanish chorizo, fries and rouille and the beet salad (both great) and the Blini (just a small bite - you can skip it); the pate with crostini and pickled items were tasty ; the Basil wrapped jumbo white Gulf shrimp with glass noodles, red cabbage, carrots and spicy cashew sauce were very flavorful - but the Mac ‘n cheese with white cheddar, gruyere & smoked paprika was so creamy - the best item of the night.

Excellent choice away from downtown!

By Brad H |

We found this restaurant on TripAdvisor and took a Lyft ride of about 5 minutes from downtown. The ambiance is very friendly, like a place locals enjoy. Service was very attentive and the food was exceptional. We had the cioppino and the fresh fish of the day. Both were well prepared and presented. Dinner for 2 with drinks came to just under $100.00. We highly recommend this restaurant.

afabulous dinner!

We had a great dinner! Salads, Ciopppino, bread, fish, and the delicous philo wrapped shrimp! Next time we come we are getting double order of shrimp! A great dinner for the money. Will be back here on out next visit!

Great fresh fish in a cozy restaurant

By Purrfect |

We were very pleased to find this local fresh fish restaurant. The combination of flavors on the king salmon with snow peas and mashed potatoes and chives and a balsamic sauce was great. We also had the ling cod in a tomato sauce with veggies. We shared a strawberry rhubarb desert. The wine selection and cocktails were also great.

Fun place to have dinner!

By Bill W |

We had a fine meal this evening. We started with corn and prosciutto chowder along with the oysters, and I had the pork chop for my entrée. My wife had the cropping and all were excellent. Our waitress was professional and friendly.I recommend this restaurant without reservation.

Simply the best seafood place in town

By Bruce B |

Seafood, obviously, but every thing else on the menu is superb. This place is a find. Has a portland neighborhood vibe, good service, fine bar. What more to ask for?

Just Not Quite 5 Stars

By rittired1 |

My wife and I liked this restaurant a lot. We were staying near the Portland airport and didn’t want to drive downtown. This neighborhood restaurant was close, and very good. We both liked our wines-by-the-glass selections and the special smoked salmon appetizer. I had the cioppino and my wife had the pork chops. While the quality of both was excellent, they were both too peppery for our tastes: hence the 4 stars. The desserts were excellent, especially the huckleberry ice cream. The service was mostly very good. The exception was that I got a dessert I didn’t order - the huckleberry ice cream. I was not unhappy in the end since it was so good. If we visited Portland again, we definitely would go back to Cabezon.

Looks can be deceiving.

By Zaxes |

From the street and even stepping inside one has no hint of the dining pleasure ahead. The six of us, having made a reservation, were seated promptly at a comfortable long table ( sorry not rounds). Our server was on the spot to take drink orders from the adults and youths. Although the restaurant was full, it was easy to carry on a conversation and to discuss the dinner menu. While it was not extensive, there was a selection for everyone to try. I chose the Cioppino. What a wonder experience! Two others chose the Halibut. They were also fully satisfied. The youths chose Caesar salads and fries. Both were to their liking. I was impressed with our server and other servers that "checked in" on us during the meal. The presentation was lovely and right for a hearty appetite. If I lived in Portland, this would be a regular stop on my dining rounds.. Sorry but no room for desert but it sure looked good.

Good local place

Food was good as was the service. Not a romantic spot as a little too noisy but great spot for friends to have a good meal and visit.

The right touch of Sea Salt

By Sean C |

With my boys being engaged in social activities for New Year's Eve, it seemed like a great opportunity for my brother and I to indulge in a wonderful seafood dinner. My key desire was to find a menu with subtle flavors, whimsical uses of local fare, but deliberate in portion. Cabezon "caught" my attention. In particular, the Tork Oysters and the Black Bass. Intriguing!!. So off we went for a late night dinner. The Oysters were amazing. Because of the small species size, the prep and execution require precision. The Aductor Muscles were cut cleanly and the brine was completely clear. I knew the staff cared about detail. The oysters were stunning in flavor and clarity, not to mention so very fresh. At this point, my excitement was growing. I could not wait to try my entree. The Black Bass was delightful. When the plate was placed before me, with the crisped skin face up detailing of the manner it was prepared. Very bold. I like it when the chef is willing to highlight what most shy away from. Yup, it was prepared spot on. The skin was delicately crisp and subtle in flavor. The fish was firm, salted lightly to bring out the soft notes of the flavor. So simple, yet so complex. Start with a great cut of fish, let its flavor be the feature and give it a complimentary series of ingredients to highlight and be the great supporting cast. The fingering potatoes, young carrots, brussel sprouts, and italian Cipolline Onions were gently dressed with a soft mustard reduction that was so fitting. All the vegetables were carmelized to a delicate crisp and balanced so nicely with the sour notes of the mustard. I think the flavor surprise was finding a few black bass medallions in the light reduction. The other thing I so appreciate, is that the dish was delivered at the right temperature, demonstrating the coordination and care of the server and kitchen. Mmm, so nice. The right touch. As we left, the entire staff cheered us Happy New Year!! Thank you Cabezon for ringing in the New Year with so much taste and care!!

A pleasant night out

By Daniel D |

We went here recently early on a weekend night. The service was very good. The food was all prepared well and it was obviously quality, but nothing really wowed us. We had the pate appetizer which was probably our favorite dish of the night. It comes with crostini and they will give you more if you ask. My wife ordered the bass and I had the monkfish. The bass was good but I think I am just not a fan of monk fish. Overall, I think this place is good and we just chose poorly with our dishes but i can only rate based on what we had.

Even my teenager was happy

By Debbie D |

It's been awhile since we were here ... don't know why I didn't review it. My husband and I went here with our son traveling to a Portland wedding. I saw an mac and cheese on the menu I thought he'd like but we had a great waiter who encouraged him to try things. He had a good fish entree' oysters and creme brûlée Had I made any of this at home he may have balked but he loved it all Success! We would return.

Excellent visit

By Eastpedro |

Three of us visited on a Monday night, when things were not very busy. Norman took good care of us throughout. Cioppino, ling cod and halibut cheeks were the entrees; all were well prepared and perfectly cooked. For dessert, we had a fantastic peach & strawberry shortcake. I’d definitely go back.

We eat here whenever we are visiting friends and family in Portland, OR. As usual the food was good and the atmosphere welcoming. Great small neighborhood spot.

unpretentious, good food, fresh fish

The starter of blini was delicious! Freshly made. We had a late dinner while attending a dog show. Surprise the food was delicious. We both had the fish stew, it was cooked to order, had a lovely lingering tomato flavor. Service was excellent.

Good and unassuming but barely a professional establishment

By CondeCox |

I ordered the Cioppino with a glass of white wine, sitting at the counter by myself while my wife was out of town. I kept thinking that this is a cut above Tabor Tavern, but barely, with prices more than a cut above. I also kept thinking that if Gabe Rucker at Pigeon or Kate Millard at Coquine were making a Cioppino, it would be WAY WAY better than this. In other words, a good restaurant, but hardly one of the best. The shrimp were overcooked, which happens often at average establishments. Wine list good but one of those 300-400% mark up lists (unlike, say, ,Davenport which appears to be 200-250% over wholesale, with one of the most extensive lists in town). Go here if you like good but not great food and if you are not terribly picky. Not for real foodies. And I hate to say that, because the chef claims to be the owner, (and vice versa), and I seem always to like very much places where the chef is the owner. Perhaps the chef has gotten lazy or inattentive....that sometimes happens.

One of the best in Poirtland

By William B |

My wife and I had dinner the day after Christmas at Cabezon. This was not our first trip to this restaurant, but we always come back because the food is excellent, fairly priced, and the service is professional. It is a perfect spot to have a leisurely dinner without being rushed out. The restaurant utilizes a team approach so you get to interact with the bartender, the servers, and the owner. It is truly a delightful restaurant in a city full of great restaurants, but Cabezon, in our opinion, one of the top.

Seafood at its Best

By SoonerSteve |

This restaurant should be rated higher. It has an interesting decor and great atmosphere. The service is excellent. My wife and I ordered fish (2 different kinds) and both dishes were very good. The fish had a nice crust but was tender and juicy inside. The sides were very tasty and different as well. We never order dessert but did when we dined here because their desserts all sounded good. We enjoyed the desserts very much.

Delightful

By William B |

My wife and I along with another couple recently had dinner at Cabezon. This was our second experience at Cabezon. I am pleased to report that Cabezon was wonderful on the first visit and equally wonderful on the second visit. The dishes are creative and healthy. The raw oysters were fresh and lovely with a nice variety to choose from. Everything on the menu was delightful including their scrumptious desserts. Our server was outstanding and very professional, not like some service in many restaurants. The server was polite, helpful and fun. I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are going to go, reservations are recommended as it is popular with the Portland foodie group.

Wonderful little Portland gem

By Lynne C |

We visited Cabezon on a rainy weeknight with our son, daughter-in-law, and infant granddaughter. We were seated almost immediately. Our server fussed over the baby and we never felt unwelcome-it is a very family friendly environment for such a small, upscale restaurant. The food is sensational. We started with the Caesar salad and enjoyed the twist with both radicchio and romaine lettuce. I had the cioppino, which was excellent, and my husband had the jumbo scallops, also very good. The cioppino sauce was so good I wished I had more of the delicious bread for dipping. We split a lemon tart for dessert, which was okay. We will definitely be back to sample more of the entrees on the menu.

Best Mulligitawny Soup Ever.....

Savory, flavorful with chunks of lamb! I don't know if this is authentic or not. It was fabulous. Steelhead salmon was delightful, fries and aioli scrumptious, fresh Bibb salad. Everything our party tried was delicious. They accommodated special dietary concerns without hesitation. Not cheap....but worth every penny.

Great find!

What wonderful service and delicious food ! Very accommodating of GF dietary adjustments. I can recommend the mussels with smoked jalapenos & tomato - which we had with the homemade fries& aoli instead of bread .Their oysters were amazing. My seafood Cioppino was delicious .A wonderful experience .

A foodie's paradise

By MLM |

I went to Cabazone with my family (husband and 9 year old daughter). The restaurant is pretty small so there was small wait even though it was a weekday. It was worth the wait in so many ways. The food was amazing, well prepared and lovely presentation, sourced locally when available. The service was attentive but not intrusive and atmosphere is pleasant. Low lighting, rich color palette, candles, all of which leads to a relaxing meal. There is no "kids menu" so to speak however the server was helpful in pointing out some smaller portion menu items that we could modify to make my daughter happy. Plan to walk out with your wallet a bit lighter but know it will be well worth it.

A Perfect Start to Our Vacation

By Arden O |

We were looking for a nice restaurant near PDX for dinner on the way to our hotel preceding a morning flight. Well done! The salads were impressive and delightfully presented, both fish dishes were first rate, and the service without flaw. We will be back.

Very good seafood in a neighborhood setting

By JOEL S |

The food at Cabezon was interesting without being overly fussy. My party had the Cod, NY Steak and Cioppino- all were well prepaired and attractively plated. The wine list is thoughtful and not overly expensive.

Perfect every time

I make a point to try and get here at least once during my 2-3 trips/yr to Portland. Always get the cioppino and always love it.

Great place with an intimate feel

By James H |

We were looking for a seafood restaurant in the Portland area with unique food and we found it at Cabezon. This is an out of the way place with an unusual Spanish inspired menu. Although I would recommend reservations you may find very intimate seating in front of the restaurant. Although the service was a little slow and the food may be a little pricey I still recommend this place for the ambiance and the quality of the ingredients. They have the freshest seafood and vegetables I have tasted in a long while.

Not to be Missed

By Richnr27 |

Best seafood in Portland. Fresh fish flown in daily. The Red Snapper from the Gulf of Mexico with the ginger butter was true treat. The wild striped bass from VA was also exceptional. Cabazon is a seafood lovers paradise

Nice place to eat in Portland

Nice restaurant with great customer service and good food. I recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will return. Great atmosphere.

Good Place With Room For Improvement

By blacklab1601 |

Wonderfully fresh seafood delightfully prepared as well as locally sourced meats. The cioppino was excellent but fell woefully short on some ingredients; my serving had a single Dungness leg in it. Service was professional but rather cold, clearly a seat was being served rather than a person. The check was presented before it was requested, a major faux pas. Otherwise, recommended.

Wonderful

We were in town for the weekend for a family function and we were looking for a place not too far from PDX after landing to have dinner. Found this place off of TripAdviser and made a reservation for 4. We unexpectedly ran into 2 family members at the airport and brought them along for dinner. Not nearly as hard to find as earlier reviewers had mentioned. When I told the hostess we were now a party of 6 instead of 4, she had no hesitation in moving us to a new table and quickly getting it set up. It's not a big menu, so check it out online to be sure they serve what you may like. Definitely not a kid-friendly menu (which is why I picked this place). We had the mac and cheese and the fries with dipping sauce for starters, and then ordered the cod, the steak and the grouper as entrees. Good wine recommendations from our server, as well as martinis. Wonderful bread and butter and everyone shared bites of their meals - it was all amazing and cooked to perfection. If I ever order cod again I know it won't measure up to the way this was prepared. This is a great little neighborhood restaurant with excellent food and great service.

Upscale yet Comfortable Dining

By 2again |

This venue is top notch in service and food/drink offerings. We’ve spent many evenings here in the past 8 years and enjoyed them all. You must make reservations at this time. You may choose indoor or outdoor dining. The price point is on the high side, but the experience is worth the cost.

friendly local chef

I was visiting my wife's family in Portland and we all wanted to try a new place that we had not been to in the NE Portland area. I called the restaurant and left a message around noon that day that we would like to make a reservation for the same evening. The owner and chef (I believe Dave) called me ! He told me about our options for dinner and available tables/times and we settled on the "big" table (there were 5 of us). You could probably seat 8 or 9 at this table (and we will go back with the entire family one night). The place has a real neighborhood vibe and the inside is very comfy. Now for the food - the presentation was nothing short of stellar ! We started with an olive & scallop appetizer - nothing short of yummy ! Then the staff brought us our salads - we tried the caesar and the garden varieties - again the plates were fabulous ! We had the cod, cioppino (spelling) and the sturgeon for our mains. The fish dinners were so tasty and everyone cleaned their plate ! Then we did deserts, the whiskey flavoured dish was very interesting, the crĂšme brule was delightful and my nephew & I split the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Next time we go I may get bold and try the lamb or pork chop dish but we will go back ! Thank you for an excellent meal

Best seafood restaurant in Portland.

By Chris K |

This is one of our favorite local spots. Their standard menu items are always consistently amazing and their specials are creative exploits of exquisite flavors. Oysters are some of the best in town and the drinks are always strong and tasty. My only hesitation in writing this review is concern that we won’t be able to get our favorite spot at the bar if it becomes any more popular. I’ll take that risk in gratitude for the many excellent meals I’ve had here.

don’t miss this place

By Bowlerx_424 |

off the beaten path but what a great find! honored our outdoor reservation no problem. loved the choice of menu items and drinks. the cheese plate and olive selection was a great start. large salads were fresh and tasty and easy to share. the cioppino was the most flavorful ever and the albacore tuna was cooked perfectly. leave room for dessert! the bowl of chocolate was to die for! parking was a minor challenge but drive 2 blocks and no big deal!

I loved this restaurant and it’s food.

It was a rainy Oregon evening, but this restaurant dazzled me. I love seafood and was not disappointed. Service, decor, food and wine were perfect. I wish I lived closer and could visit more often. There were 3 items that looked wonderful on the menu. I ended up ordering Striped bass. It was perfect.

Delicous Food & Great Service

If you are looking for a fantastic meal with attentive service in an unfussy environment, this place is for you. Yummy!

First Class Meal

By ctomac |

Our dinner last night at Cabezon was a "10." Every morsel was packed wth well-blended flavors, from the appetizers of Salt Cod Fritters, to the Red Curry Soup, to Grilled Lamb Sirloin with farro verrde, to the Cioppino, to the Warm Ginger cake with spiced pears and caramel for dessert. This was part of Portland Dining Month, so my wife's Prix Fixe was $33. We enjoyed wine, extra appetizers, and I chose three courses that were not part of the dining month prix fixe, so our total check ran a bit over $100.

Wonderful Seafood

We had heard great things about this spot and weren't disappointed. Everything was good, but the Cioppino was fabulous! Worth the short drive from downtown. If we make it back to Portland, we'll definitely try this place again.

Wonderful Mothers' Day dinner

By MsMacPortlandOR |

This was a special treat from my foreign exchange student who is saying goodbye after living with me for 9 months. I haven't been here for a couple of years, and I first noticed that it has expanded into an adjacent space, which is a good sign. I had a half dozen oysters on the half shell, which were divine, and could easily have eaten a dozen, but at $3.00 each, I felt that was too extravagant. Had a side salad, which was good. My companion had the marlin, which was moist and perfectly cooked. Service was excellent. Waitress coached my companion through the options and was spot on in her advice.

Wonderful Meal

Had a wonderful dinner here last Friday night. Our waiter, Norman, was terrific. The fish was amazing. So fresh and so well prepared. You have to try the Candy Cap Mushroom Ice cream! Amazing..... I highly recommend.

Cioppino!

By StepMorris1 |

This could be a one word review. Order the cioppino (a pseudo-Italian seafood stew supposedly invented in San Francisco) and you will understand everything about this place. It's fresh, spicy, local, and layered with flavors), The menu is mercifully limited, and yoou can't make a bad choice. We tried, but everything was good. Friendly ambiance and service to match.

This place is awesome! Great fish and seafood!

By HMBATL |

Outstanding restaurant in the Hollywood district of Portland, OR. Fish/seafood dishes were superb! Had the cioppino (fish stew but or so much more) which was outstanding. Good wine selections and the deserts are outstanding. Service good to boot. Cannot recommend this highly enough. This place is great!

Great food and atmosphere, spotty service

By Ann S |

We really thought the food and atmosphere at Cabezon was fantastic! We had the mussels, cioppino, and sea bass...all fresh and delicious. And my margarita was fabulous. The restaurant is very quaint and seemed to be more of a restaurant favored by locals. The problem lies in the service. Our waiter took our order immediately and dinner arrive soon...a little too soon... after our drinks. But then we really didn't see him again and we were able to order another drink. When he finally did arrive, he seemed a little overwhelmed and another server (or hostess) finally delivered our check after a long wait. Too bad because this place does have fabulous food.

Excellent Seafood and Good Wine Selections

By macnjac89 |

4 of us all had different seafood entrees (they serve what they have fresh for that day) and after a sample of each they were all wonderful... fresh, cooked perfectly, well plated and affordable. The wine selections by the glass and bottle were plentiful and reasonably priced. The staff was professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. I've been to other seafood restaurants in the area, but none better. Not large and popular - so make a reservation.

Delicious!

By beachesToronto |

We came because of their excellent reviews and quickly found they were well deserved. The complementary bread was much better than usual. Two us shared the cheese tray. Very good! The pate was presented beautifully and was also excellent. Two us had the Cioppino, which we enjoyed a lot.

Wonderful informal restaurant

By sawdusted |

Really enjoyed the excellent food in the warm atmosphere. Don't miss the excellent mussels with beans and chorizo topped with world class French fries and the dark chocolate mousse desert. Lots of interesting seafood but (although we didn't try them) some good looking meat dishes were served to the next table. Don't miss this one!

Perfect experience

By Foodies2010 |

The atmosphere is casual and the service impeccable . But best of all is the quality and flavors of the dishes. We started with a roasted beet and cheese tart which tasted even better than the menu description sounded. It was large enough to share and was so flavorful it would have made a satisfying main if teamed with another starter. We both had the cioppino heaped with various fish and shellfish--I was torn between this and the duck confit (ordered by an diners at an adjoining table who made noises of enjoyment over the dish). Finished off with the whiskey ice cream profiteroles with chocolate sauce and hazelnut. One of the best meals I have eaten in the last 10 years!

Brought by locals

Our son & daughter-in-law brought us to Cabezon last night. It was their second visit and we would return! Nicely prepared and served local seafood, top-notch but friendly (not fussy) service. Tasty Orange Blossom margarita! Not a bit touristy, obviously focused on locals who know their seafood.

Wonderful

Yummy and great elevated food. Hard to find but dont let that deter you! it was a nice meal and ood menu. Would go back

Ambiance nice but price for portions high

By tootsie12 |

Like most cozy establishments in Portland parking was difficult because it was adjacent to a neighborhood. We drove around twice I jump out to see if they had parking and I was told just park anywhere, easier said then done. Four blocks later we managed to find a spot. We were asked if we had reservations upon entering and we said no we came on a whim based on TA reviews and luckily we got a cozy table near the window. We had been out all day exploring and were pretty hungry. Our server was telling us about a soft shell crab appetizer limited plus Mediterranean mussels very good and suggested both. We actually were going to order both but when we asked about starting with appetizers then come back and we’d order entrees she again mentioned that we should order our main course now due to again limited selection. We changed our mind only got one appetizer and ordered the Sturgeon & Cioppino dishes. My husband asked me why she seemed to be strongly suggesting “order now” limited quantities unless she was rushing us due to no reservation. This made us feel very uneasy when it came to enjoying our dinner. The entrees were tasty but delicate in quantity for the price. The pics I’m sharing were after we had taken a couple of bites because we couldn’t believe for the price this was all there was to the dish.

So repeatable

A very Portland place super casual welcoming with excellent food and beverages of the adult variety and affordable! They even served plain noodles for fuss budget but adorable granddaughter. Writing this reminds me we must return.

Excellent seafood

By Gordon M |

Travelling from out of town, we picked Cabezon as it offered NW seafood. The space is attractive (very cool glass light fixtures over the bar!) and the staff was professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. Of course, the food makes the restaurant and Cabezon excelled. Ciopino, tuna and cod entrees were fantastic. Highly recommended!
