A gem!

By April D |

I have dined at Cafe Lutecia since the late 1990s when I was a college student. It holds a lot of dear memories for my family. The food is fresh and delicious! It is great to sit and have a toasted cranberry scone with butter and coffer or tea in the morning. We also love to have a feast at lunch and order the great soup, sandwiches, and salads. Truly a gem!

Equisite French Cafe on the Left Bank of the Schuykille

By Adam S |

Been to Paris recently? Well, no real need since you can get a bit of the left bank right on the corner of Lombard and 23rd, The French proprietress knows her cuisine and her clientele. The menu is replete with a touches of France, from the pastries to the ever changing soups and quiches. The lemonade is one of the Best of Philly and the service to match. On a walkabout Fitler Square, our even nearby Rittenhouse, you should detour, worth your time and calories. Ah, but never on Mondays.

Drop in if you're in the area

Cafe Lutecia I'm conscious my first impression of this cafe, which was a little disappointing, is heavily influenced by the glowing reviews I read the nite before, as I dosed off, slightly hungry... The small Lshaped layout means its quite intimate.. I opted fpr the standard breakfast. Good fresh oj but a lot of white bread. I had hoped for some granola, muesli healthy options but none available. Breakfast is a big affair with quiches, savoury croissants and pastries on offer. A different start to the day and I expected a lot more after the rave reviews. Nevertheless it made me miss my friends back home and look forward to sharing a breakfast with them again very soon! To summarise, if you only have limited time in Philly, there has to be better. If you have a few days, check it out

Disappointing... not really good and bad service/style

By Veronique2309 |

Went 2 times. First time 2 years ago: the quiche lorraine with tuna was dry, the tuna old, the side salad done with all the left over together without style, almost no vinaigreet. Not what I was expecting Tried a second time thanks to friends and neighbors who said it was better: the food was ok, not really super good or fresh but ok for the price however a strong argument happened between the mother - the cook- and the daughter -the waitress- and it went on and on and on, with curses and bad words... I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately for me, being French didn't help me not to pay attention to this lack of self-control for a small place like this. I won't come back and I am sorry for it as I am always ready to support small local businesses.

Genuine french food served by genuine people

A very friendly staff serving the very best tasting food. Their brie and tomato on a baguette is so wonderful its hard to imagine anything else, although they have great homemade soups too, and quiche, and salads. I did not see any white bread.

Superb soup, delectable sandwiches on wonderful bread, neighborhood ambience

By Katherine L |

This tiny French cafe delighted us on a cold wintry day in January with a robust sausage/ham/bean soup and a hot pate-and-brie sandwich on a superb baguette. The family who runs the place -- cook, waitstaff, and all -- were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. From their description of their bread pudding (made by them of their own home-made croissants and their own home-made creme fraiche), we will have to return soon; lunch was too satisfying to want more. The neighborhood feel was palpable, with people chatting as if they really knew each other, but welcoming to strangers like us too. On Tuesday evenings they offer a BYOB dinner with tapas which also sounds very appealing. Otherwise, they are open only for breakfast and lunch.

Solid, charming budget choice in Rittenhouse area

Cafe Lutecia is a charming 'hole in the wall' type place in the Fitler Square area of Philadelphia. It's convenient to Rittenhouse square and provides for an inexpensive 'local' choice outside of chain restaurants in the area. The cafe is very tiny and can get loud but is also very charming. The service is kind and the menu consists of no-frills basics. The tomato bisque soup is great (and rich) and I typically do the half soup/half sandwich for around $8. Note: I believe it closes at 3pm so it's solely a breakfast/lunch spot. Blog post here: http://tinyurl.com/o2v73ev

Delightful family serving wonderful French food.

Cafe Lutecia was recommended to us twice in a single day. The first recommendation came from a realtor who was showing us property in the area when we happened to be driving past this little restaurant. Pointing Cafe Lutecia out to us, he said " This is where you come for the best breakfast in Philadelphia. On weekends, people are lined up to get in." Later that afternoon, a friend texted us that if we wanted to have lunch somewhere in the neighborhood, we should try Cafe Lutecia. We went, we were delighted, and we will return!

Good Breakfast or Brunch

By jeffl499 |

A special neighborhood café near Fitler Square, Café Lutecia is a favorite of locals although difficult for tourists to find. The walk (or cab ride) is well worth it for both the place and the food. It is very small with tables crowded together like a French café with a sense of being part of a family rather than a crowd. A few tables outside. The menu is decidedly French with an array of quiches, soups and sandwiches (Croquette Monsieur) that bring back memories of student life in Paris. It is an open kitchen with the chef keeping an eye on both the customers and the establishment. Tasty dishes with crusty French bread as the common element that holds everything together. Good wait staff.

Great neighborhood place!

Lutecia is a great place to go for breakfast and lunch. For breakfast they have homemade muffins, and croissants. For lunch they have great soups such as tomato bisque, and African chicken peanut soup. Lutecia also has great French sandwiches such as the croque monsieur.

A Hidden Gem

It's been in the neighborhood for the past 20 years or so. When I used to work in the area, it was a weekly lunch stop. Good home made soups, wonderful salads and lovely French-inspired dishes. The owners ( who are french) are charming and have the place nicely decorated. It's a bit out of the way but worth your indulgence.

No fuss French

You want a Brie sandwich on a baguette with a coffee and old copies of Paris Match to read while you brunch you come here. It hasn't change in the 22 years since I moved out of the neighborhood.

Local, Neighborhood Cafe: Excellent Croissants And More!

By GlobalVillage |

Background: While house hunting near the University of Pennsylvania Hospital (HUP) for a six week visit, a potential "host" (thanks Ashly!) recommended we try Cafe Lutecia. Verdict: This is a local, neighborhood cafe with excellent croissants and more. We hope we have time to come back again soon! Note: Cafe Lutecia is ope for breakfast and lunch only. Credit Cards accepted.

Phila's Best Kept Secret No Longer Secret

Please, s'il vous plait, don't read this review and prevent me from getting my coveted table near the window. But I could not blame you, because this is the best breakfast/lunch place in town. The eggs are shimmeringly delicious, the orange juice is FRESH (no, I don't mean "fresh from concentrate", I mean fresh as in squeezed by hand that same morning), and the variety of pastries all home made. The service is as warm as the delectable scones, and there is reading material everywhere to accompany your solo breakfast or lunch. And, if you are a deux or a trois, you won't find a more delightfully intimate place to gab and mingle. The really fun part, when it gets warm and sunny, is to sit at a table outside and watch the folks on Lombard Street; for a moment it feels like Paris itself. This is a family-owned cafe that has been around for over two decades. It will not deplete your portefeuille and, after one visit there, you'll be thinking of another.

Neighborhood place with a french twist.

Food is well prepared in this tiny brunch/lunch spot. Good chicken salad, quiches and soups. The place has a very informal feel with a lot of neighborhood regulars.

A jewel in Philly. Not to be missed!

Val is THE BEST! Delicious, authentic food from South-West France, amazing tastes which propel you directly in France. Not to mention the wonderful family-style ambiance where you feel "at home", cared for, well taken care of by Val and the team of great waiters. A jewel in Philly. Not to be missed!

casually delicious

This small French restaurant is easy to get to on the 40 bus. The staff are very nice and the food is amazing. It's a small restaurant and clearly popular, so you may have a wait. There's outdoor seating as well for when the weather is nice. I got a goat cheese, oregano, and roasted red pepper sandwich on crispy baguette which was to die for. My cafe au lait was very good as well. My friend got the red lentil soup and goat cheese and fig quiche. I tried the soup and it was very tasty. We are definitely returning because of their varied menu and delicious food, for a very reasonable price.

One of the BEST lunch locations in Philly

I started eating here more than 10 years ago and it's still as delicious as it ever was. The bread is that delicious crunchy French bread and the fillings are incredible. I've had 4 different dishes there, one I believe is called the Parisi. It's a vegetarian sandwich that's so much more interesting than any other I've ever had. Their tuna salad sandwich is also flavorful. I've also had their quiches which are just the perfect density. Finally I've had their tomato bisque, also delicious. They also always have the same waitress and she's SO fun and nice. This place is small and quaint and just very french. A MUST GO! *The only thing to be aware of it that they go on vacation during the French holiday which isn't ours and it's quite a long holiday. 3 weeks maybe.

Casual, friendly neighborhood spot with good food.

Run by a French family, the soups, salads and sandwiches are always good. We usually order the "chicken salad" salad. A hearty scoop of chicken salad on top off a green salad. The place is small and sometimes there is a wait but that is part of the neighborhood charm..
