Paris meets Silverlake

By Thomas90028 |

Always enjoy the classic bistro fare at Cafe Stella as well as the unique and charming atmosphere of the dining room next to the bar. Daily items are usually good additions to the regular menu. Went on short notice last night and managed to get a reservation. Excellent frisee salad with perfectly poached egg, flavorfull cavatelli with mushroom ragout, classic steak au poivre. Attentive, friendly and knowledgeable service. Nice wine list and good recommendations from the excellent sommelier who was generous with the wine by the glass pours. Surprise on getting the bill that my wine had been paid by the stylish and personable bartender/server. Looking forward to the next dinner there.

A hidden gem!

This restaurant had lots of atmosphere and excellent food choices. Lots of local produce was featured and all was prepared with a French flair.

You might think is just one of those overrated places people talks about but it’s definitely not. I went there trying to spot Anthony Kiedis on the table next to me and i didn’t but i found pure rock and roll essence on every bite of the best pancakes you cannot even picture in your small mind. Seriously, the lime pancakes are off the hook. Coffees are served from Intelligentsia (the place next to Stella) so don’t be afraid, your coffee won’t disappoint you. Perfect place, perfect location. French patio vibes. Pure LA beauty.

Magnificent Evening

By Shane L |

We were meeting some friends in LA and wanted a special evening . Stella didn’t disappoint. There is a wide but not overwhelming wine menu . A nice selections of cheeses and desserts . The classics are all present on the menu . Everything was delivered by a friendly and proficient staff. Would recommend this place to anyone dining in SilverLake.

Reasonable bistro fare, questionable locale with inconsistent service

By Saeed J |

Family Sunday brunch here. Started with three coffees ordered which came in spurts. Finally, we got ONE spoon and some creamer. Food came and was good although not all dishes arrived in a timely fashion. A few went hungry for about 10 minutes as it appeared the waitress finally got the order in - maybe you should write down the order next time eh? Especially with seven people? Bathroom on the premises has no lock and is filthy - consider using facilities elsewhere before venturing here although we dealt with it fine (stationed kid at door to ward off intruders). Apparently, once construction is completed this will be addressed. Huh? Until then the rest of us full paying customers have to suffer? Ok ownership - maybe ill head over to some other place like Dusty's next time.

Cafe Stella is fantastic. Food is great, bar is great, very fun crowd.

By MATTHEW K |

Have been several times and it is still great. Had the steak frites, they are as good as it gets. Wife had scallops that were perfect, the sides of roasted cauliflower and carrots were delicious and they know how to make a drink. Crowd is loud and lively it is a fun spot. Highly recommend. Book ahead it gets busy.

A great spot in Silverlake

By Per N |

This is a french inspired restaurant that really's worth a visit. We came for lunch and had a turkey sandwich, fresh avocado, artisan chickensausage and the eggs benedicte with salmon. All was really tasty.. Ambience was nice and it is a good place to people watch. Good parking too.

Swank, cool dinner

Loved Cafe Stella! Our server was attentive and helpful, the crowd was fun for people-watching, and food (of course) was just excellent. Don't miss the interior bar. Overall just a top spot to choose for dinner while you're in Silver Lake.

Gorgeous brunch and beautiful setting

By Laura A |

Popped in for a late brunch as it was very close to our AirBnB and couldn’t have been more glad. After being seated at a shaded table perfect for someone still adjusting to California temperatures our group of 4 were offered drinks immediately (even receiving a free coffee due to a misorder at another table). The slight twists on classic brunch dishes really made the menu special, I had French toast with maple chantilly cream and others had eggs Benedict with shredded potato creation instead of a heavy English muffin. Will be dreaming of this brunch long after our trip is over.

Pleasant French Bistro

By Cando |

It was wonderful to be seated in an attractive, only moderately noisy restaurant with nice service, and served an overall delicious meal with generous, but not huge portions. (So many restaurants these days are noisy and throw the food down on your table -- there is often no 'service' any more -- but not Cafe Stella.) We dined at Cafe Stella at dinner, a party of four. The restaurant seems to attract a hip, youngish crowd. Although the outdoor seating on the covered patio looked inviting, we opted to sit inside. We enjoyed our onion soup -- excellent broth, lots of onions. Three of us got the moules frites. Although the broth in which the mussels are cooked was very tasty, I was surprised the mussels themselves were overcooked. Instead of being plump and succulent, they were teeny and shriveled in their shells from too much cooking. The fourth got the steak frites. She said the steak tasted good, and was cooked med.-rare as requested, but she had to contend with a line of gristle running through the meat. The waitress explained it was a shoulder cut. The frites were delicious -- thin, crisp and hot. Food prices were fair, but wine was a bit pricey. The wine steward was knowledgable but a bit over-dramatic (perhaps to match the wine prices.) None of us had room for dessert. Would I would go there again? Yes.

Our favorite in Silver Lake

By Todd S |

We enjoy this place so much that we put offers on homes in walking distance from it. Although those didn't work out and we are now a mile away, we don't mind getting in the car for their sole meuniere, escargot, truffle fries, and always a surprise soup de jour. With the addition of Bar Stella (try the Sophia - delicious) this place is unstoppable.

Must be there old world french style bar & restaurant in Silverlake

By Felix_Vienna1140 |

My favourite place in Silverlake!!! Stylish old world charme! Very French with a bit of Buenos Aires feeling in the epicentre of cool Silverlake! Great steaks! Great selection of wines, very nice bartender in white jacket an tie, a bit dressy place in always beach wear style Los Angeles... Very unique but laid back atmosphere, cool young crowd and a great place to avoid tourists! Go and try!

Star struck by Stella

By Linda E |

Did not have the privilege of dining a la francais at the bistro BUT did experience the attached BAR STELLA on a Saturday night. Ambiance abounds due to soft yellow candle lit bar surface and entertainment abounds due to the 3/4 white-coated professional ( and i do mean pros) bar tends. Luxurious specialty cocktails shaken or stirred a deux with much fan fare and hand cracked ice blocks. Wonderfully eclectic bar food..and crowd..but the beauty of the soft lit bar was the clincher that night.

Good food, though service can be off putting.

Great place for a date

By Craig K |

This was my first trip to LA. I had been craving a steak all week, and Cafe Stella really hit the spot. Steak and fries, what's not to like? Sometimes when I go to places like this, I have to have a burrito after my meal to fill me up. Not so here. Nice cut of steak filled me up good. The wife is vegetarian, and there was plenty for her to eat too.

Stellar Cafe Stella!

By MilkmaidTS |

What a fabulous French bistro in the heart of Silverlake! This is the real deal....mussels, escargot, steak frittes, on and on....I loved navigating my way through the whole place to be brought to the teeny, intimate space in the back of the place, with booths and bar full of local characters. This seems to be a very "insider" place for people in the know. The food is delicious, attentive servers, and just one of those finds you definitely keep returning to again and again. The energy there is super cool.

Great ambiance & food

By Garrett L |

It's one of those restaurants that you forget exists, and then one day you remember it's there and kick yourself for not going more. It's a little maze-like. Weird entrances and the sort of hard-to-find bar in the front add to the charm. French-ish food is always good. Service is hit and miss, but never bad.

I think the food is good, but not great and it's pricey. The atmosphere is awesome though.

Best pomme frites

The steak au poivre was excellent. The sauce soaked pomme frites were perfectly salty. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the halibut and the wine suggestion was dead on. Can't say enough about this restaurant.

Lunch was wonderful. Salad Nicoise, eggs in a basket, veggie sandwich - all excellent and a great variety.

Fun place, delicious food!

By yardbabe |

We had great service, delicious food and a lively evening! The halibut was excellent - wish I could find it like that everywhere! Everyone loved the steaks. Mussels were awesome too! Loved the pate. French fries disappeared quickly. So good. Service was great. If you are looking for a quiet dining experience this is not it. Lively and fun. My daughter had a pink drink that she LOVED. Don't know the name.

Excellent steak and fries

By Une_Petite_Critique |

A really cool place with a French-American vibe. We had the pepper steak that was cooked to perfection, the meat melted in my mouth and the thin crunchy fries that accompanied the meat were absolutely gorgeous. My only complaint is that we ordered champagne and was served prosecco, something that I would have wanted to be informed of before receiving the slightly boring glass of bubbles. And, bring your wallet, this place is quite pricey for its hipster location.

What more do you want?

By kevinbuth |

Wonderful grilled artichoke half, smothered in all sorts of goodness. The lamb chops were ridiculous good, and the short ribs are probably the only thing you should ever order. Super. Service was slow. But hey, they're French. Let em do their thing. It's not the type of place to race through a meal.

Worst service this side of LaBrea

Have eaten here for years and have never had worse service and a more poorly cooked piece of fish in years.

A real treat

By Chamariapa |

This was my second night on my new city, a friend asked me if I want it to try French cuisine, in this very interesting bohemian hood in LA, Silverlake, we had an outdoor seating table, the weather was perfect, I got a bottle of Malbec, and we have some rabbit paté that was fantastic, the main course was the pork chops, you most try and my friend have the sea bass, the portions are small, but the flavors are just delicious, the combination of the wine, weather, good fresh baguette and the decor of this place, make the experience unique. Parking is difficult because is LA, but other than that, this place have to be on your checklist.

Dinner with Nicholas in Los Angeles

By Leo A |

Had to come back here for Dinner. Valet Parking is available. They have several areas to dine in, chose the indoor dinning area. This is a French restaurant with wines from France and bar drinks available. The food and service was excellent. At nigh,t the room was a little dark for older folks, had to use the iPhone light to read the menu. Would coming back for another meal.

Delicious Benedict

By Dena D |

The atmosphere is very bohemian laid back. The food was great, depending on what you order. I had the benedict which was so good I finished the entire plate. To be fair, the plate is not the typical giant American plate...it's a normal sized international plate. I don't even like eggs but that was good. My husband ordered the French onion soup but it was a little too sweet. Overall, I would come back because the food is delicious and priced fairly.

Great French Cafe

By KRISANDBILL |

We stayed one block away from this Cafe for 4 nights and had a great breakfast on our last day. We should have started with the Cafe for dinner on the first night because if the breakfast was any indication of the quality of food and service it would have been great. Recommend going here first for any meal...you will not be disappointed.

Magnifique! GREAT FOOD, Ambiance, and Service!

By heathgirly |

We had a wonderful lunch! The food was so good!! I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was so yummy! I ended up sharing some of the sandwich. It was a lot! We ordered a bottle of yummy french white wine. My friend ordered an incredible salad with butter lettuce and some pomme frites with truffle oil. OMG - Good!! We sat outside in this charming courtyard which lent to the entire experience. We didn't want to leave. It was a little slice of heaven.

The LA answer to a French bistro

By Kath F |

Don't miss this cozy, funky French bistro. All our meals (steak/frites, halibut, sea trout) were exceptional, the service was attentive but not intrusive, there's a good wine list and the desserts are over the top yummy. The place was packed but we had a booth so we could hear one another. It's a really fun, lively spot with a great bar that you thread through to get to the restaurant.

STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!! A desire for so much more

By GrantReed |

STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a desire for so much more! Whenever I want to impress someone with the neighborhood in which I reside I book a reservation at Cafe Stella. I guess I should have hopped on street car to Los Feliz last night as this Silverlake haunt was a complete and utter disappointment. I’m aware that without the waxed beard and complicated sock garters I lack a certain hipness required by the cafes that pepper Sunset Junction but I still have money in my pocket and LUST in my heart for a great meal, which I have always gotten at @cafestella. Let’s break the experience down. The hostess appeared irritated by our arrival ,never greeted us properly and I took us to our table in true April Ludgate style. I will give her a partial pass as I felt bad that she was born without the muscles necessary to smile. Speaking of mussels the one which we ordered were born without the ability to taste like anything. The waiters job is to engage his customers and get them to want to order an over priced dessert. This guy had trouble convincing me to order the free water on tap. He never checked on us once after our meal was served and it was a chore for us to even place our order. When taking our drink order I queried ( in my most pretentious tone). Do you have @monkey47_dry_gin ? To which he replied in his most disinterested tone “I have no idea but I’ll check”. Oddly I was introduced to this magic elixir at this same establishment during my last visit by a completely over the top bow tie wearing gin peddler who I adored. They did in fact have the gin I wanted which was the only REDEMPTION during our entire night. The mushroom pasta had us longing for @hamburgerhelper and the steak frites is not even worth mentioning. I leave you with our last meal out in 2017. We!ll skip the MANIA tonight and act like responsible Silverlake hipsters and BLANCHE some kale. Happy 2018!! #food #foodporn #foodie #foodblogger #foodlover #newyear #gin #sunsetjunction #sunset #losangeles #broadway #theatre #travel

Fun place

Tres bien! Great French menu. Must haves... buratta, truffle fries, meat balls, grilled asparagus with béarnaise sauce. French wine list is extensive but pricey. Bar is very cool with very attentive and well trained bar tenders! Fun place. We will return!!

Great experience

By Brandy Johnson |

Cafe Stella offers a delightful French inspired dining experience. The romantic ambiance and attentive service create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu features a variety of French dishes, providing a taste of Paris. the restaurant can get crowded during peak hours, leading to longer wait times. Prices may be on the higher side compared to other bistros in the area. It is a top choice for authentic French cuisine.

excellent food, piss poor service

By Lizakaya |

I love the food at Cafe Stella, I live in the neighborhood and have been literally dozens of times. However, my visit last night prompted me to write the following e-mail to the management: live in XXXXX and have enjoyed dining at Café XXXX on literally dozens of occasions. Casual nights at the bar, romantic dinners, b-day parties, etc. Dining at the bar Wednesday evening I had an experience that angered me enough to write you. The bartender had a demeanor that was so uncivil, so cold and unfriendly, I was taken aback. He did not greet us when we sat down, and before taking our order rearranged bottles and polished glasses behind the bar. We waited no less than 15 minutes for him to serve us at 6 pm with 2 other customers sitting at the bar. We expressed our desire to dine at the bar, to which he nodded and did not provide menus. My dining companion had to get up and ask the host for menus. During our meal, when I was ready for a glass of wine I requested a taste of the wine the host had decanted, I wanted to decide between that and something else that intrigued me on the wine list. The bartender ROLLED his eyes at me, and said “I guess so.” We all saw him roll his eyes, this was not a perceived slight. My dining companion said, “Fine then I will just order a glass and she can taste mine.” And that was that. We finished our meal without further incident. Not only was this bartender not friendly (and I don’t expect a bartender to be my best friend), he was uncommunicative and just shy of hostile. Not one time did he ask if there was something we needed or if we were ready for another glass of wine. Not once did he ask how our meal was. I walked out of your establishment shocked and unhappy. We spent, including tip, $XXX. Having said that, I do believe that it is as important to give a restaurant kudos where they earn them. The host was as charming as can be, sweet, friendly and seemed interested in making sure we were enjoying ourselves during the little interaction we had with him. Our food was stellar. Simply delicious, every morsel. (One steak au poivre, one filet and and order of tomato carpaccio). And every swallow of wine was from a well chosen bottle. Wonderful. Thank you for your time, and I hope next time we dine at Stella we will have a better experience. XXXX

Ruddest Service Ever

By JSGMD |

One of the worst experiences ever!. Went with a long time customer and had requested a particular table. After being seated, the manager came over and said we would have to move as that table was reserved for the owner. The manager and owner were both so rude and even went so far as to suggest that we dine elsewhere...which we did...never to return.

Hearty French Fare

By Rachel L |

When I think of French food hearty does not typically come to mind, dainty, rich, flavorful...but rarely "hearty". I had the BLT and added avocado and I must say it was absolutely delicious! The perfect selection after a disco dancing night! BUT don't leave after eating...head across the way to the ever so quaint bar area for craft cocktails. I recommend the C. Arthur and substitute tequila. I MUST come back for that cocktail alone.

Very Awkward Experience

By Jenny |

Maybe the drinks are good, but we stopped in for dessert and cocktails at 10pm, and after seating us the waitress said dessert could only be had at the bar so if we weren't doing full dinner we had to leave our table immediately. Kinda weird since we were in a row of 4 empty tables and the bar didn't serve dessert? Very uncomfortable and no dessert to be found, so we left.

Best brunch we've had in a long time

By Graeme Fraser |

We have a couple of days in LA. A friend recommended brunch here before we leave for San Diego. It was excellent. Every dish we ordered was fantastic: baked eggs, buttermilk pancakes, eggs and prosciutto and the granola. Highly recommended.

Relaxing place to eat, drink, and people-watch

By travelingyogi |

We ate lunch here a couple of times. It's typical French-cafe fare: salads and sandwiches. Both of my meals were very good, and my dining partners liked their meals too. The Nicoise Salad is very good and quite filling.

Coolest laid back over the top romantic bar scene

By Magpie1969 |

More like a 4.7. The setting, the incredible bar, the great service, waitress, Isabelle, deserves a 5 and makes this place a no-brainer. The food was very good.

Hipster Watch

By chickendijon |

If you're interested in watching hipsters, which I know I am, then Cafe Stella is a great place to do it. It's got a great little bar, a nice outdoor patio, an indoor patio and a cool indoor bistro area. It's very representative of Silverlake, without the obnoxiousness of some of the spots down the road. We popped in for brunch. Burger and French Toast, respectively, some cocktails and some wine. It was all good. Not outrageously good. But we were there to hipster watch and we were not disappointed. This is where 23 year old girls who move out from Oklahoma should bring their mothers to show them - 'this is how I live now - these are my people'. And hey - it's nice to watch hipsters while eating decent food and drinking good drink in a nice atmosphere.

Chicken roasted with lavender & honey

By pdxtanguera |

...honey. That is all you really need to know. Probably the most deliciously inventive dish I ate in a 5-week road trip. I ate at the bar. Service was just okay, but better than obsequious. This is a popular joint right next to Intelligentsia Coffee on Sunset.

A delightful restaurant cafe for all seasons.

By BebeSegal |

Cafe Stella is one of my favorite spots to slowly sip coffee or tea in the late mornings or evening. It's a place you go with a girlfriend to catch up on life or with your partner but I've seen celebrities there on business dates too. Everything on the select menu is worth trying. I have liked the blue cheese burger, oatmeal, chicken baked in creamy mushroom sauce, and french onion soup. It's an all around casual chic french countryside kind of place with taxidermy on the walls, modernist paintings, flowers on the table, and strange whisps of something like Paris in the air. I definitely recommend this place just to go alone and read, hang with a friend, lover, or family. There's also a sweet wine bar which a lot of regulars seem to adore. Feels like a different old world at Stella Cafe on Sunset Junction in Silver Lake.

The food is not worth the horrible service and the "attitude" you get from the waters and the metr-d alike.

What a night!

By Kali Nikitas |

For tourists and Angelinos, this is a fabulous place and I can't say enough about it. Great location as it captures the spirit of Silverlake today. Three different areas within the restaurant (inside front for quiet, front space for groovy lounge and music and in between for outdoor dining). Cafe Stella captures the assets of LA living as in the great people/great restaurants/great weather. The food was tremendous and I will return, again and again.

fine dining in Silver lake

By seehoustonlosAngeles |

We''ve been going to this restaurant since they opened. They've grown into somewhat of a destination especially for the neighborhood that we have watched change so dramatically. Our last visit was really inspiring with the new addition of the bar which is really something to see! The food was delicious! Try the Sea bass and the field mushroom soup.

This place needs to be cleaner

By Pinkamber13 |

The breakfast courses are tiny, hence I ordered two to survive until dinner time and too small for the price. I had egg benedict and lemon pana cotta pancakes. The potatoes with the egg benedict $13 where fried two potato disks and tasted well. But too small. The pancakes $11 were really delicious and served with blue berry perservatives. Especially the perservative was really delicious. What I didn't like was; seated outside, with not many guests, the table was sticky and overall needed a better cleanup (layers of dusts on the window sill. So I had an extra eye on the cleanliness on the plates. The tea was served in a tea pot with several pieces chipped off.

Nice brunch and hang-out place. Very relaxed outdoor seating

By DrewinMv |

I particularly liked the food selection and quality. It doesn't hurt to be located next door to Intelligentsia Coffee (which is offered as a catered item on the menu.) The style is French Cafe. I had the Veggie sandwich consisting of big heirloom tomatoes, avocado and other stuff on a 9-grain roll. The lemonade was extraordinary. I got a wonderful chocolate croissant "to go". Great staff. I'm looking forward to sampling other items on my next visit.

Just went back and steak frites was best I have had in a long time. Really good.

By MATTHEW K |

Went with friends --like the ambience and love the bar--have never thought the food was exceptional until this last meal--the steak frites was insane. Best I have ever had I think. Really...loved it. Sommelier also hooked us up with a nice bordeaux for $85 that had some bottle age and was ready to drink. The deserts were also very good. Got two side which we didn't even finish. Bill came out to $330 for four people before tip so not an inexpensive dinner but it was excellent. Go early and have a drink in the bar--very cool space with professional bar tenders. French75 is a great drink to try there...

Cozy Good Sunday Brunch

By renakashmere |

It's a nice cozy place with a covered patio. On a hot day, it wasn't the coolest place to hang out, but the ambiance made up for the heat. The food is very good, but the portions are small for the price. I had the Avocado toast which had chunky pieces on one piece of toast for $8 and my son had the soft eggs with Prosciutto on one piece of toast for $14. Pricey, but delicious! It's hard to park on the street, but there is a parking lot in the back that charges by the hour.

Hard to Find, Harder to Park--but worth it

By California Dreamer |

This is the place for brunch. The eggs benedict, fabulous bread and juices all make for a memorable experience in this white table cloth spot. You can eat inside a French bistro inspired set of rooms or out in an open air court. Either way, you will be greeted and treated well. The food and service are actually worth the one downside to eating here: I literally spent three quarters of an hour hunting down a parking space. This is a very crowded, ticket prone and car dependent area. Be advised that there is a small lot behind the restaurant. Another caveat: the restaurant's signage is not helpful since the building blocks it. Be sure to bring the address with you or else you'll walk around for a long time. That said, don't be deterred--Cafe Stella is a great spot.

Dinner date with friends

By Maezee |

A friend currently living in LA reserved a table for us here as it is apparently one of the best eateries in Silver Lake. I am so glad she did! The decor and ambience is so quirky and intimate. The cocktails we had to start with in the bar were fabulous! As for the food it certainly did not disappoint...my fish was cooked to perfection. The truffle fries were a delight also. Despite the whole place being very busy, we received pretty good service throughout. Certainly a place I'll be recommending to friends visiting LA in the future.

So glad to revisit this great French bistro in Silverlake

By MATTHEW K |

Went with friends and have not been here in years. There is now a great bar up front with state of the art mixologists working (bartenders) and the restaurant is still very good with a great atmosphere. We started with escargots and beef tartare and for dinner had steak frites and sole meuniere. Very traditional and good french bistro fare. Highly recommend this restaurant, The food is good and the ambiance is very charming.

Charming and delicious

By Leona F |

We were celebrating my husband's birthday and friends recommended Cafe Stella. The space is charming, the staff attentive, the food excellent. I had escargots and my husband a carrot ginger soup for appetizers and both of us were attracted to the sautéed scallops with baby vegetables. The scallops were so fresh and so sweet they were special. We shared a pot-de-creme for desert, all washed down by good and reasonably priced wine recommended by the waitress. During our one week stay in LA we decided to repeat our experience another evening and had an excellent dinner.
