An excellent evening

By Gooey |

TBH I was not expecting such a great experience. I’m English and thought it unlikely that the food would be that good. I was very impressed, as were my family. The scotch egg is a delight (share one between two), the fish and chips the best I’ve had in years. Staff delightful, acoustics perfect. We had an assortment of items from the menu and none disappointed.

I really like you, California English!

California English is a beautiful decorated restaurant in an inconspicuous area surrounded by businesses. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked up and saw the expansive lawn with games, gazebo and sitting areas. How fun! When we walked in, I loved the décor immediately! I love the green walls with gold accents, plants, wood, etc. Our server was great! He was friendly, attentive and answered all our questions. 10 out of 10! I got the sweet corn soup which was so delicious I'm still dreaming about it! I also ordered the braised short ribs which was so soft and tender. My friend ordered the fish and chips which was a huge portion! He loved it. For dessert we ordered the ice cream bars which was not too sweet and a perfect portion. The only suggestion I would make is that when the sun went down, the lights inside were still super bright! If they could dim them a little, I think the ambiance would be even more perfect!! I would definitely return to this restaurant and highly recommend to all.

Great experience!

I've had the pleasure of dining at California English before. It was my husband's first time. The food is always great. Their fresh chips are my favorite texture and taste so good. The pear and ricotta toast is craveable. Everything I have ever had here has been amazing. What really sets this restaurant apart is the impeccable service. Everyone from the server to the beverage manager to the general manager to the director of operations to Chef Blais, himself, was super friendly and welcoming. Nearly two years old, this is a gem of a restaurant experience. We will definitely be back!

California Flare Tea

My daughter and I had their tea. You are supposed to reserve the tea beforehand, but we weren’t aware. They kindly accommodated our request. The decor and ambiance were lovely. There was live entertainment as well. I admit I was suspicious of the non traditional tea menu, but I was pleasantly surprised and glad we tried it. I thought the buffalo chicken tea sandwich was going to taste like buffalo wings, but it was just chicken salad with a bit of spice and was actually very good. The service was excellent, and we were pleased with our experience. We had the boozy tea, and the drinks were so tasty.

Delicious without making you feel stuffed!

Big fan of chef Richard Blais, so I’m so happy we had the opportunity to visit one of his restaurants. California English is true to California cuisine as lighter fare without sacrificing flavour. Great place to enjoy a quick bite or a lingering meal!

Pretty solid food-chic ambience

Good fanfare of American foods right next to Sorrento Valley Tech center with Tony’s flair The interior deco was very chic - so I wondered if it was okay for business dining - but in the end good food is all that matters

A great spot in San Diego!

This was one great dining experience. My sister, mother and I were in San Diego for a wedding and, being a Top Chef fan, I wanted to try Richard Blais' restaurant. We were there closer to closing time (6:30 on a Tuesday, the restaurant closes at 8:00pm Tues-Thurs), so it was quieter. The service was exceptional, we had a very kind, attentive server named Sam, who gave great suggestions for our meal. We tried all three starters at his suggestion - the scotch egg, the fried brussell sprouts and the tartare - and all were delicious. For our mains, two of us had the seasonal vegetable plate which consisted of polenta, grilled asparagus, grilled wild mushrooms; the third person had the fish and chips, which we all tried and loved! They have a really nice wine and cocktail menu; I had the Pimm's cocktail and really enjoyed their spin on it. I also loved the outside area with a garden and small patio; they had a croquet set, and corn hole stations, encouraging guests to have some fun!
