Pleasant Surprise - Excellent Food

By Chad |

While a little off the beaten path, Canard is worth visiting. We stumbled upon it by chance as we had meetings at the nearby convention center, and the limited menu originally made me skeptical. However, everything was delicious and left me wanting more. Will definitely go back next time I’m in Portland.

Very Average and Expensive dining experience at Canard

By Maria B |

We went to Canard for dinner last night wanting to support small restaurants in Portland during the winter storm which closed many businesses. We ordered Delicato Squash, Stuffed Mushrooms - both very good but not that impressive. Fried Chicken Wings and Steamed Burgers (which I ordered two and they brought 3 and charged for 3). We didn’t say anything about this. Fried chicken wings seemed to have been fried in a reused oil, you can taste this when oil is not fresh. The Streamed Burgers at $5.50 each were very average reminding me of White Castle burgers. Bottom line: Food is overpriced. Experience underwhelming. Waitstaff has bit of attitude, not attentive to the table and doesn’t get your order right. The combination of service/culinary quality/service is unmatched. There are too many good and more affordable restaurants in Pdx. I will not return to Canard.

Great, interesting food, with a nice price point

By timrage00 |

the small plates here are intriguing and wonderful, priced more affordably than next door. the foie gras dumplings are worth the trip. The attention to detail, such as the crunchy quinoa on the salad are remarkable. Paris-Brest is now one of my favorite dessert "trips."

French Small Plate Heaven

By Timothy C |

This place delivers great French-inspired small plate food. Terrific variety and high quality. Wine list is excellent; French-themed, but with other regions represented. Wait staff is friendly and competent. We were given complimentary glasses of bubbly for moving to a four top in order that they could sit a larger party at our original table.

Excellent! A real gem!

By MIfamilyguy |

This is a small restaurant that specializes in small plates, i.e. meals to share. We ordered a selection from the imaginative menu, and found everything excellent. A particular standout was the Pot de Canard (duck's liver pate,) which was remarkably flavorful. They also do a good range of beer, wine and cocktails. Service was generally good, with a couple of flaws, hence missing out on a 5/5 rating. The first issue was with bar service. After being seated we ordered a round of cocktails to drink while we studied the menu. They took forever to arrive. Second, a side order of fries was apparently forgotten, only arriving after we'd finished eating. Bottom line: some of the best food I've ever eaten, but they need to improve the service.

Amazing breakfast

Sat at bar - really friendly and delicious breakfast at great prices. Highly recommend loaded breakfast potatoes. Amazing garlic aioli

Wonderful lunch

By Douglas M |

This was a great find as we tried to escape the boring food options around the convention center for lunch. The walk was well worth it. Perfectly executed French small plates in a relaxing space with a friendly, helpful staff. What a great spot to unwind. I’ll be back.

Compliments for Candard

By JulesBrie |

Dropped in to the latest new restaurant on Sidburn aka Burnside! Another cozy restaurant created by Gabriel Rucker. He has two other restaurants that are so delightful and Canard is now addesd to our list! So quaint, great service & the unique menu is very much a new variety of tasty selections.

Well executed

By Hammytoss |

Late lunch, popped in to a very pleasant space with professional staff. Started with shrimp toast and garlic fries. Prepared perfectly, seasoned and temperature perfect. Duck stack with foie gras was flavored and the duck gravy wasn't salty (good). Most people confuse the two. As a former long time PDX'er I appreciate the ability to ask the bartender to make you a drink of their choice with your favorite spirit. You will never lose with the quality of the bar staff throughout the city, and Canard is no exception.

Incredible midweek brunch

By catymogo |

Friends of mine and I were in Portland for a work week and wanted to grab some brunch - this place was great. I had the shrimp cake benedict, and my friends had the duck stack and goat cheese omelette, respectively. The drinks were delicious as well, and the service was attentive (although we were the only people in the place). I would 100% recommend to a friend, and I wish I were here on a weekend day to experience the full menu!

Unfortunate portions; No sides; Nice atmosphere

By travellingwomanjk |

I wandered in. I didn’t arrive with any formal expectations, except knowing that the menu contained French cuisine, which I generally adore. I ordered the duck stack. Sweet and savory pancakes topped with ground duck meat, gravy and an egg. Sweet and savory is always a win. Food was not very hot. $15 for a appropriately smallish serving was not robbery, however the price would be more acceptable if it came with a side. I paid an extra $5 for potatoes because the dish when flying solo is a soft “mush” dish, and it absolutely needed an addition of crunch. Taste was fine, but there was no wow factor. Potatoes arrived quickly enough (I ordered them after my dish already arrived), so speed in general was good. Potato’s arrived very hot. The portion could have fed 3 people, which was just unfortunate. Suggestion: give the people a few potatoes in addition to their dish. They won’t break your bank account (make the dish $16) and few people will reject potatoes as an option (they are potatoes after all), and it will make your dish more dynamic. Dessert: very disappointed that I could not order the Paris Breast ($10) since the portion is for two or three. I would have loved to have a $5 option for one. Seemed to contradict the idea of their small plate theme. Staff: kind and quick. Cleanliness: I sat next to some dust or spilled salt that was emphasized by the sun streaming in. Ambiance: Very lovely. Music set at an appropriate volume. The din was movie like. Great light. I sat near the kitchen, which is always fun. Overall, it was fine. But I suppose no restaurant wants to be fine.

Dinner at Canard

By marcella842 |

The food was delicious, the servers friendly. We enjoyed our meal very much. It is very much worth the visit!

Listen to recommendation to come here

By scagnetti |

The Jupiter suggested Canard for dinner. Small plates by design, so have 2 or 3 and get a good sample of the place. Only regret is we could not make it back for Breakfast. DANG--next time.

Give it a go

By bbaker5555 |

Great atmosphere and good menu choices Of the six of us at the table, half of us loved our selections and the other half scored OK. Maybe just not a great night. I will try again.

Great lunch spot with lots of energy

By Crystal H |

Order from the lunch menu and ask about the specials. Joyce was super helpful. Her recommendations were winners. Try the beef and cheese sandwich with French fried onions. Add the crispy Brussels with peanuts, horseradish sauce and perfect caramelization.

Truly affordable luxury

By Skegger |

My wife and I walked to Canard for breakfast on a Saturday morning, round 11:00. We sat at the rail by the kitchen in the back, because we wanted to see the effort put into the food. Our choice was rewarded with an overview of how Canard/LePidgeon do their business. And their business was delicious! I had some sort of pancakes and duck gravy with a duck egg on top. My wife had the orange french toast. I must admit the real titles to these meals were more colorful than my descriptions, but there is no denying the awesome flavors. For a meal as good as the one we ate, I'd happily have paid twice the money. Seriously great food, an upbeat and positive staff, and food you'd could (And may, if they see this) charge twice as much for. Their Bloody Mary was no slouch either.

One of Our Favorites

By Anna T |

We love it at Canard. We go as a family, on dates nights, with friends, and everyone has always raved about it. They are accommodating with allergies and the staff is so helpful. The food is so delicious. They offer all these comfort foods, but crank it up a notch and give a twist I'm not expecting but want more of. I love how they are changing their menu with the seasons too. They keep their classics, but always have something new for you to try.

Good but not worth the hype.

By Tracy K |

I heard great things about this place so I went after work for happy hour. First, this is a very nice place. It isn't what I would call posh, but it is tastefully done. The food was creative and flavorful. The staff was so so. I would probably go back for dinner, but just skip happy hour with a well drink still setting a person back $9.

Fun vibe

By Stephen F |

We stopped in here for an early drink before our evening out. It had a really cool vibe and a nice wine list. It was a great neighborhood hangout. We were just visiting Portland but we will be back! The staff was wonderful!

Trendy and noisy

By Lenny R |

The sole reason I wanted to leave this review is to give a warning. Some people want to have a dinner with friends or family at a place where they can talk without having to scream to each other the noise. This is not the place for them In addition to tall ceilings that create an echo effect, the music that seems to be aspiring to be trendy, is loudly and monotonously beating your brain. The food is good, inventive, delicious, but somewhat overpowered by spices. It would be more suitable for a South Asian place, rather than a bistro that presents itself as French. The service is courteous and quick, as long as you can hear what a waiter is saying, and make yourself heard.

Humble Creativity in Dining

By tripdude541 |

Dropped by to check out the lunch menu at this restaurant / diner named Top New Restaurant in 2018 by Portland Monthly. The food and service did not disappoint. The menu is small but well conceived. The food is delicate but full of flavor. Not large portions but reasonable for the price and new popularity of this East Burnside Portland diner. I will definitely be back to try out the dinner menu. Thank you Canard. Also, part of the Le Pigeon and Little Bird Bistro family (both great food spots as well). Stay humble please and remember it's all about the food. #RockawayBeachFoodies

Portland Birthday at Canard

By Chris D |

We really enjoyed Canard. The service was excellent, and the the menu was delicious. The duck pancakes were a winner. The soft serve ice cream with lemon, olive oil, and salt was a great surprise. Would enjoy everything again!

fun food to share with friends

By Lauren K |

We had most of the small plates off the happy hour menu. Pretty much it was all very good. The terrine was delicious. The sliders were a riff on White Castle hamburgers if anyone remembers those but not quite as oniony as the real thing. Garlic fries were fine but not that special. The Oeufs en Mayonnaise was ok. Not a big fan of these in the first place so I'm not a good judge. I'm sure better quality meat! Off the regular menu, the Kale and roasted apple salad was yummy. I think the meat dish was a rib roast which was cooked for a long time and pretty much fell apart. Very good. The deep fried Mac and Cheese was everyone's favorite. It was fun to explore.

Just Didn't Get It

By chefdablame |

I'm a big fan of their other restaurants . . . . . Pigeon and Little Bird . . . . but not so much with Canard. Ambience is fun and casual and service was excellent. The menu seems interesting enough but the food just doesn't quite make it. The wrappers for the Foie Gras Dumplings were tough and chewy. Their Steam Burger was an upgrade from White Castle, sure, but what's the big deal about that. Yes, it was fun but not great. The Duck Stack was a disappointment. A Foie Gras "Fajita" special contained individual elements that were delicious but just didn't gel as a whole.

Inspirational!!

By RocketReview4U |

Canard has opened a new restaurant in Oregon City, bringing a French flare to the Portland suburbs. My wife and I shared the most exquisite meal we have had this year: unique cocktails, fresh NW oysters paired with champagne, soft boiled eggs topped with roe, bacon and herbs, a scallop tangerine reduction and steak frites. This was a meal that leaves you salivating for the next time. The staff are right on queue and eager for guests to have an exceptional experience,

Fine Dining, relaxed ambience

By Christin R |

Our dinner at Canard was pretty cool. Dishes a little bit on the expensive side but really delicious. We got dumplings (the best) and some standards that were at the point - beets, wings and sliders. Everything was very tasty and with a great mix of spices.

Terrific Find. A Must Visit.

By John B |

We stayed at the nearby Jupiter Next hotel and stumbled upon this place. Great crowd in this funky and trendy little place with an open kitchen and lots of chefs. We sat at the bar since all the tables and the seats looking into the kitchen were taken. Lovely and friendly bartender and nice pour on a great selection of wines. Food is mostly small gourmet bites and tons of flavors. We had the egg mayonnaise ( incredibly tasty soft boiled deviled eggs) and the hamburger steamers ( flavor packed sliders). We wanted to eat more, but we were stuffed. Prices are very reasonable. Looked to be a trendy and social under 40 age crowd with lots of cool conversations going on. Wonderful experience. We will definitely be back.

Excellent food, small portions, high price

By Milestogo007 |

Had to try out Canard because on Eater PDX they said Canard had been rated as part of the best new restaurants in the USA, so that sounded intriguing. The atmosphere is casual, the restaurant is very small and noisy. The service was very good. The food is excellent but the portions are small and the prices are very high. My brother had the slider hamburgers and said they were the best he has ever had. He also had an order of garlic fries which were very good. I ordered a Tails and Trotters pork chop which came with a salad. The pork chop was exceptional and the salad was excellent. They have soft serve ice cream for dessert so we both ordered a waffle cone with the ice cream which really hit the spot. I recommend Canard for special occasions.

Atmospheric French Bistro Delivers Delights, Especially Duck Frites

By Marshall J |

A bistro that takes its name for the French word for duck had better deliver some fine dishes with that under-appreciated fowl -- and Canard indeed does. This was our first visit to this charming bistro with its authentic French decor and, after a brief wait out front, we were seated at the bar. This turned out to be a fine spot to watch the frenzied kitchen action by what seemed to be an all-male cooking staff. Our evening got off to an off-kilter start, though, when the bartender turned up his nose at my partner's order of an Aviator cocktail (too girly perhaps?), while my order of one of the house specialty cocktails, Smoke 'n; Roses ($13), got an appreciative nod. Note to bartender: Customers are here to please their tastes, not yours. But his icy response to our first order soon evolved after some serious questions about menu and wine options followed by the bartender's thorough and helpful answers despite the Plexiglas screen hanging between us that made conversation with him difficult. Thankfully, our dining equilibrium was soon restored after the rocky start. I opted to start with a half dozen briny oysters ($18) with an unusual Mescal mignonette that was a perfect complement, even for someone who usually likes his raw oysters without embellishment. My partner, after several months of going breadless on a diet, couldn't resist the small baguette with butter and flaked salt ($5.50) and it prompted near-sensuous delight. For her main course, she chose the scallops & caviar ($28.50), with asparagus cream sauce, smoked mussels and Meyer lemon. This dish was better in description than execution since the caviar (salmon caviar, perhaps) seemed mostly missing-in-action in the taste department. I opted for a main course featuring the restaurant namesake -- duck frites ($28.50). This nifty variation on steak frites featured slices of a perfectly medium rare duck breast sitting atop a pile of absolutely perfect fries, with accents provided by peppercorn demiglace, goat cheese and bacon. This magnificent entre deserves immediate enshrinement in the French Bistro Dish Hall of Fame. We finished our satisfying repast with one of Canard's trademark soft-serve ice creams ($4.40), this unusual one laced with cardamom. It was a satisfying end to memorable evening out -- what we have missed so much during the pandemic. Canard charmed us in many ways.

Amazing Dinner

By WillIGoBack |

This is the real deal. They don’t take reservations so get there early or late. Lots of places to get a trip while you wait. Everything and I mean everything on the menu is superb. Hospitality top notch. Love the wine list some really good gems Will I Go Back ? Next time in Portland. Yes!! The duck pancake is worth the airfare alone.

Extraordinary Breakfast

By Heather R |

My husband and I love trying new places for breakfast. While in Portland, we found this gem. Fresh food, unique options, friendly staff, and who doesn’t love a breakfast cocktail! The duck stack is a must try. If you want something lighter, go for the omelette, but definitely add a side. Thanks to our servers Talia and Ashley for making our visit so enjoyable!

Deliciousness.

By Julian V |

We absolutely love Canard. If you’re looking for a charming quaint French restaurant you certainly need to try Canard. The cuisine is delicious and has your palette dancing, their wine list is pretty food and they have a specialty cocktail list that will keep you coming back for more. Everything on their menu, which I have had more than once is absolutely delicious. It’s a must try for a local and or a traveler looking for a very good experience. We are in the restaurant industry ourselves and we know quality cuisine and excellent customer service. They hit it out of the park! Enjoy as we do! Cheers

Excellent brunch!

Had a super spicy Bloody Mary and eggs benedict on shrimp toast for brunch - really good! Also tried the ham and jam sandwich - yummy. Highly recommend.

Top 18 New Restaurants in the Country...and one of them is right down the street...

By Richard B |

We read about this restaurant in the morning and had dinner there that night. Predictions were for a long wait as they don't take reservations. However, having arrived just before 6:00 PM we were ushered to the Chef's Counter seating which was perfect. We had the opportunity to watch and learn how the team in the kitchen made and assembled the food. We had the Steak Tartar which was a very unique preparation. It was amazingly good. The Duck Stack came next with the addition of a chunk of Foie Gras from the grill. This was total decadence. The service was very good and attentive. The wine list is perfect and designed around the food. Of course, there are cocktails and beer selections as well. This is a small place right next door to le Pigeon on Burnside in East Portland. Be prepared to wait for a table. It's worth it.

young, hip, noisy, and TASTY!

By JeanneandDavid P |

had dinner and drinks here - such interesting food, well presented, good service.....lots of hip, young folks here - noisy for us older folks but that is the norm for most restaurants....we came early - at opening......- 1 dish per person for all to share worked out well for the four of us.....

Not Top 50

By Ang723 |

I read about Canard in one of my food apps. It was top 50 on some list. I booked a rez because we were coming to Portland for a concert. The day before our rez I received a text from Canard reminding me of my rez and informing me if I didn’t cancel in time I would owe $$. The day of my rez I received a text telling me “your reservation at Canard is in 3 hrs”. All that reminding was weird and felt threatening. Now we are at the restaurant and the server over explained the concept of sharing small plates. We ordered delicata squash, garlic fries, market salad and steam burgers. Those were the best item we had. All else was meh. Not getting the position on the 50 list.

Enjoyed it with family

By Woodcrest55129 |

Garlic fries, egg dish, salad and duck pancakes were both surprisingly and enjoyable. We had fun. And excellent service.

Great meal

By OrrgonDuckFan |

Wife and I stopped here for dinner before a concert at the Doug Fir Lounge. Food and service were first rate. Every menu item we tried - coconut shrimp appetizer, oysters on the half shell, mushroom salad, swordfish with crab and asparagus, and rabbit and prosciutto terrine - were perfectly prepared. We enjoyed the atmosphere as well - great place.

Will be back!

By Bryan H |

Beautiful, warm interior. Odd old 70's music playing. Overhead fans created a chilly atmosphere on this promising to be hot day. It was morning still, though. Attentive service. Small portions. Excellent tasting food. Not cheap. I will be back when it turns chilly out. I have fantasies of me drinking at the bar in a suit watching the rain. Scribbling in my journal. Had a blast during my first time there this morning.

Gabriel NEVER disappoints!

By shekisses |

This team are culinary GENIUSES! We have been big followers of Ruckers since moving to PDX in 2007 (we are Oregon Natives) and began our love affair with Le Pigeon. Then little Bird was born and we divided our time. Now CANARD! A fantastic spin on classic French dishes. The Oeufs en Mayonnaise are sublime, Pot de Canard should not be missed and leave it to Rucker to come up with a drink with a Fois "wash". If you love French food, any of Ruckers restaurants shouldn't be missed. If your passing through our beautiful city by the river, do yourself and your soul a, favour... indulge your senses at any of these locations. The food NEVER disappoints. EVER.

Brunch and a half

By PINONVY |

After dinner at Little Bird, I had asked one of the owners for a breakfast suggestion for the next day. Canard he said without hesitation. My wife googled it and said of course he did, they are part of the same group! but looked good so we went. Sat at the bar and watched the chefs at work. Had a simply amazing dish, loaded breakfast potatoes, and loaded was right, almost a meal by themselves. and since this was also lunch, also had a duck stack. Whew, delicious, but enough for the both of us. Truly enjoyable midday brunch.

Flavor Packed Winner!

By KMC |

Canard absolutely delivers. I ordered the duck stack and was blown away — savory duck sausage layered with classic pancakes, all crowned with a perfectly cooked over-easy egg. It’s the kind of dish that hits all the right notes: rich, comforting, and craveable. Honestly, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The garlic fries were another standout — crispy with a bold, flavor-forward twist that made them anything but ordinary. Add in the cool, hip vibe of the place and it’s easy to see why this spot is a repeat-worthy gem. Can’t wait to come back and explore more of the menu!

If you can't afford or get into Le Pigeon-this will do just fine

By tfizzle |

Went for happy hour but it was dinner time and we ordered off both menus. First the steam burger is barely worth the $3 hh price but it is way over the top at 6. The oysters at 6 for $9 are a steal. The scallops were excellent as were the corn and peaches, such interesting, playful but well integrated flavors. Wine options by the glass as excellent and varied and fairly priced. We at for $79 which included 2x drinks each and 4 menu items... We would go back in a heart beat.

WOW-what a wonderful place

By shewholovestoeat |

Where to start. Fantastic food, full of fun people enjoying life. Get anything on the menu, but this is what we fully loved. Uni Texas toast--sweet and wonderful Mushroom salad-yes Foie gras dumplings--it's foie gras, say no more Pot de canard Yowza drinks, service and staff. GO. EAT. Love it!!!

Every dish a hit

By Stephanie A |

Had dinner here Saturday. Short wait was very worth it. Service was great, wine pairings spot on -- Ben knows his sh!t. Cocktails were interesting and balanced, salad with crispy quinoa delish. Had to order the duck stack (again) and tried the fried Mac n cheese...wow. everything was so good. Even the chocolate butterscotch pie was great. Often places don't have a good pastry chef and dessert is a let down, but not here. Only nit is the noise level, and it's not enough to keep me away.

Sublime May night at Canard

By Mary W |

We have been coming to Canard since it opened in 2018. Gabriel Rucker the executive chef, a James Beard winner, was present this evening, and it was lovely to meet him face-to-face. Ned & I have taken our sons to Le Pigeon, next-door, which is brilliant. The duo restaurants on seventh and Burnside in Portland Oregon will never disappoint. I say this because the staff is so exemplary. If anything is not to your liking, you kindly ask a staff member to help you. This has been the status quo since we have been patrons at the restaurant, one or the other. This evening I was with a friend Tien D. who is a major regular at the restaurant. She is a soul that embraces joy and being with her is fantastic. These 2~restaurants are her favorite place to go; and, it is literally because of the people who work there. SHOUT-OUTS: Alise M - our tour guide & tender of the Bar! Megan Emily Ivan Chris - not in tonight Chef Gabe! We ordered oysters. They were tide points. Then deviled eggs, steak tartare, duck Frites with seared foie gras. Finally, dessert a soft serve, and lovely glasses of bubbles and wine. KUDOS TEAM CANARD/Le Pigeon. 🙏 Mary & Ned & Tien 5.10.22

Small Cozy and Great Food

By Paisan P |

This is a small quirky place that has good service and really great food. A bit on the expensive side for Portland but its worth it as the food is really good. We had the fried chicken that was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. It was really good and full of flavor. The Garlic fries are a must if you stop by, crispy and bursting with garlic flavor. The steam burgers were also cooked the way we wanted them, were jucy and tasted great. They also have a really nice selection of wines.

Great brunch

By GypsyCR |

One of the best brunch in town, we have tried the duck, the quinoa, ham sandwich and english, they sound simple but taste is different, they give all plates a magic, unexpected great flavor. Please do yourself a favor try every cocktail! Wow wow!

Wow! Creative but accessible.

By J and d. |

Just wow, this is an intimate space with really creative food that is a lot of fun to eat. Seems like mostly a local place for people who really enjoy food. The wait staff is very friendly and patient and explaining some of the more complicated foods that are on the menu. Excellent selection of cocktails and wines. Although it is called small plate, you will definitely leave here filled after just two or three of the plates. The portions are very generous. The duck Stack should really have a religion just devoted to it. Can’t wait to come back!

Nice place, would visit again

By B T |

Had the quinoa salad and it was excellent! Went there for lunch with some friends from out of state and will definitely return.

Wonderful vibe and outrageously good food

By Sarah Gilbert |

We stopped in partly for AC, and partly because we had heard how wonderful Canard is. We stayed for the extreme flavors and the amazing wine list. Great people, great culinary skills, great menu! We can’t wait to come back.

Heard excellent reviews from everyone

By Suzanne L |

We were so excited to go to Conards! We had heard excellent reviews from everyone when we said we were visiting Portland.Even the seat mate on the flight out from Florida. The steam burgers are excellent and we had the nicest young man cooking for us,Brandon.

Eat here every time we are in town

By veraolgam |

This is our go to place on Monday nights. They don’t take reservations, so we come early. Start out with a mandatory Steam Burger and then share a handful of plates. Creative food with fresh ingredients. Gabe is a master chef! Extensive wine list from all over the world. Many hard to find and one of a kind wines. Highly recommend it. Casual atmosphere.

Really good!

By vratcliff |

Had dinner here Friday evening ( July 12) with three family members. We went primarily try the duck stack , and the chips with caviar. Both of these were delicious!! Especially the chips . Also enjoyed the crispy duck and a few more apps . We , of course shared everything and had two! bottles of a reasonably priced rosé. Of the three restaurants... le pigeon, little bird and canard I cannot make a choice between them.

New best place in Portland

By Jim Z |

Canard, next to Le Pigeon, is open br, lu, and dinner. We just missed breakfast which is served until 11:30, but at least 3 of the main breakfast specialties are also on the lunch menu. We have gone twice for lunch. The food is creatively prepared, enthusiastically served, flavorful and delicious. We sat at the Chefs’ counter and watched the prep by chefs of most major dishes. We had the Tropical Caesar Salad with pineapple and it is a new twist on Caesar; we shared the grilled brussels sprouts with a spicy squash peanut sauce, and I had the crispy calamari banh mi, with toasted baguette and liver mousse. As we watched the team prepare other dishes, including desserts, and steaming fresh Dungeness crab for the dinner menu, we planned our next visit.

Dynamite - love it !!

By Sidney R |

party of 3 for lunch today - delightful - small plates (like Tapas) - varied and unique dishes, all thoroughly enjoyable, hard to designate a favorite - we enjoyed oysters, rabbit terrine, steak tartare, shrimp toast, roasted carrots, duck stack - ready to return our server, Ashlee, did a great job - thanks !

Pleasant From Start to Finish

By Jeremy S |

Canard is what happens when a successful chef/restauranteur opens a place serving food he wants to eat not what dining trends and food consultants suggest. At least that's how it feels to me with an uncomplicated menu and dishes flawlessly prepared. Service is friendly and breezy, ambiance is bright and comfortable. The experience is thoroughly pleasant and, for two visits thus far, never rushed. Go early on a Sunday, especially in the Portland winter, and savor the experience.

Intrigued by this new effort of Le Pigeon owner

By Rosie L |

This opened in April and is already getting a lot of press. Thus we were surprised to arrive at happy hour on a Thursday and be seated immediately. Interesting menu will certainly go back to try other dishes. The HH oyster price was great as were the oysters. The steamed burgers are a treat and priced right at HH. The garlic fries were nice and crisp. The butterscotch pie for dessert was better than expected, very light (not in calories). We also had wings which were good but underwhelming.

It’s ok

By ghui66 |

Tried Le Pigeon years ago and was excited to try Canard. We opted for the kitchen counter seats to watch the small kitchen in action. Had high expectations and was a bit disappointed on a few dishes. The oysters and deviled eggs were yummy. Service was good.

Gabriel and Andy Strike Gold Again

By ReviewFromTheHood |

I have eaten at Canard twice; April 20th during their opening week (we were outside waiting for them to open at 4:00) and June 2nd. I am a huge Gabriel Rucker groupie and he was in the kitchen on April 20th. Both times we scored seats at the kitchen counter where we watched the kitchen staff work their magic. Of course the food was amazing: Oysters with zinfandel mignonette and chili juice; Steam Burger with pickles, onion, mustard and American cheese; Spring Greens with crunchy quinoa and honey herbs-de-Provence; Fole Gras Dumplings with peanut sauce, apple and miso-roasted shallots; Swordfish Oscar with crab, asparagus and béarnaise; Chocolate Butterscotch Pie. In future visits, I will struggle between ordering the same dishes or further exploring the menu. Everything we saw being created in the kitchen looked delicious. The ambience was casual and fun, and the service was attentive and engaging. The wine list and cocktail menu have something for everybody. Le Pigeon, Little Bird and Canard each have their similarities but also their unique character. Gabriel, Andy and their staff have set the standard in the stratosphere for other restaurants to aspire to be. Bravo!

What A Disappointment

By Matteo Roccia |

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants but last night I took some friends from out of town, promising them an exceptional experience.....it was simply horrible. The stars of the show were the oysters. Thank goodness for them! The asparagus was not top quality, quite bland. They were mostly end bits that were tough and lacking flavor. The goopy ricotta and meager pecorino added very little to the dish, a bland creamy slop with a pepper drizzle which included Sichuan peppercorn (one of my favorite in the world) but paired very poorly with the dish. The foie gras dumplings were undercooked with an underwhelming liquid filling containing a faint flavor of foie gras. The chicken wings were decent but at $18 for 3 wings, Canard is far too proud of them. The advertised "truffle" honey was indistinguishable from the rest of the flavors. The music was so loud we could barely converse. In fact, the base from the upstairs venue was so intense, our bones were vibrating. We put up with it for as long as we could but with the lackluster food, we asked to cancel the steak frites and the manager said, "sorry, it's already being prepared...would you like it to go?" After 10 more minutes, we asked the waitress, who was lovely, if we could cancel it to which she replied, "certainly, no problem at all". So the manager was jerking us around for a steak that was clearly NOT "already being prepared". We paid the bill and left a generous tip for the lovely waitress and made our escape. I'm not keen to ever return and pay $250 for the measly, uninspired meal that we got. What a pity. This used to be my go-to spot. Things have really gone down hill at Canard. Embarrassing to have brought my friends here as well. An all around disappointment.

Inventive and delicious cuisine

No reservations. Few tables. Stuck at the counter facing the dishwasher. Totally worth it. Each dish was a delightful surprised. Small plates to share is the way to enjoy the talents of this establishment.

Breakfast/Brunch

Typical of this owner's other places, the food offerings are unique, and of excellent quality with attention to presentation. The staff usually similarly unique, and very focused on service. The place is tight on space, as are his other places, so I would not promote them as family friendly, but kids over 12 would enjoy the environment. A good Portland food place as this owner's other places!!! This review is not about his other places, but lets say this owner likes birds!

Wonderful food, terrific service, lively atmosphere

Our party of four had a great dinner here on a Tuesday evening. We had a variety of small plates. Everything was delicious and featured ingredients and combos that were inventive and fresh. The wine list is innovative with wines from the Pacific Northwest and countries you don't necessarily think of (such as Croatia). Service was friendly and attentive, not the least bit stuffy. Open kitchen so we could see the chefs working very hard to ensure we enjoyed our meal.

Tasty

Nice small place with a varied menu. Great flavors and nice portions. We stumbled upon Canard from a google search and what a find.

Deserves a Five Plus

They have a short menu packed with inventive and delicious dishes. You could select any of them and you would be delighted and surprised by the inventiveness and delicious combinations of spices and vegetables and meats. You will easily pay the same for far more mediocre fare in many other restaurants.

Well prepared food and friendly staff

First off, if you want elbow room, I'd go next door to his other restaurant since it is cramped (and the noise bounces), however, even if you're mom told you not to talk to strangers, you really should (remember, strangers have the best candy - Just a joke to see if you're reading this far). Canard is the "value" priced venue of his empire. Based on one dinner only, what we had I thought was well-prepared and the patron (boss) was working the counter. I think the vibe is French bistro, but Portland being Portland, he has to keep the exotic items (Pork & Eel Terrine - Which I had since I like eel) to a min and go back to more mainstream stuff (garlic fries, chicken wings, calamari bahn mi, burger). Some things, like soft-serve cones, are an interesting choice. In any case, the flavors are more subtle, which explains the wine list being toward riesling and Burgundies (the by-the-bottle list reflects this also). In any case, I'd go back, but don't know if I'm the typical guy (old and angry white male). I think in terms of pricing and ability to get in-and-out and food quality, it's good. Plus there's enough stuff in that neighborhood you can extend the evening in to a fondly remember blue if that's your desire.

Nice!

Good food! I had breakfast and dinner here.... the food was excellent (pasta w/ cheese, English peas & mushrooms ....sliders & Parmesan garlic fries.... shrimp toast eggs Benedict) however the wait time once you order and actually get your food is a bit long. Not horrible unless you’re “hangry” but still a bit long. Seating isn’t very comfortable but acceptable ..... but I would definitely go back for the food!

Outstanding full flavored breakfast

We went for the change in breakfast fare with a French twist. The duckstack was fantastic. Duck eggs on top of fluffy pancakes with duck gravy. The breakfast cocktails were also wonderful. Well thought out recipes.

Excellent food, service and atmosphere

I went with a group of friends and we tried almost every entree. It was a dining adventure, and I can’t wait to go back.

Memorable date night

By Ready2Travl2 |

Since I've been working from home and nowhere to go during the evenings while restaurants are closed because of COVID, thought it perfect time to update the TA while I have free time. I keep a food journal and Canard made an impact on us. We went here on a date, early dinner (around the time the restaurant opened), so we were seated right away at the bar. It was cozy. Had a couple drinks each (they were well balanced). Bartender was a bit stiff at first but then loosened up with us (really opened up, so that was lovely as well). Duck stack was fun. Also had pot de canard (rillette), and steak tartare.

2 Canards in Greater Portland.🦆🌹♥️~ SE Portland & Oregon City

Canard on Burnside in Southeast Portland as one of our top five restaurants. It is really special. Every Friday we are in town we meet with a favorite friend and a couple. Every single time we go we all have the same top sellers: local oysters, steamed burger sliders, duck fare, beautiful salads, fresh local produce and always top it off with the soft serve ice cream with sprinkles at the end :-) Shout outs! Alise, Miriam, Chris, Megan, Ivan, Emily, Rachel. And the kindness and focus that is always present in Chef Gabriel Ruckers kitchen is top-notch. Shout out team Tien D. Now to top this off we were invited to Canard Oregon city soft opening on July 9, 2022. The five of us were placed at the corner of the bar next to the spectacular flower arrangement gazing at the kitchen staff and enjoying a wonderful tender of the bar, John. Nick oversaw the entire bar operation. Chef Gabe was enjoying his staff and team in the kitchen smiling with his classic green baseball cap. Our focus on this trip was to try the new dishes. We ordered the corn on the cob, the gnocchi, shrimp cocktail, foie gras dumplings, Texas toast, the seared scallops – fantastic! We then dove in and tried the Salisbury steak Frites, the Tokyo hot chicken tenders, mac & cheese, smoked pork chop, a wonderful crab seafood dip. Please note, this was enjoyed by five people sharing every wonderful dish. We tried two of the new cocktails, The harlequin and the scarlet runner, excellent! The local Oregon wine we had was the Shiba Wichern Pinot noir. Our friends N&A have met the couple making that particular wine. It was lovely and a wonderful price point. We ended the night with dessert; tropical banana Sunday, classic Sunday and the pine nut buster Sunday. And we had room for some oysters! Our favorite note, is our dear friend T went back tonight :-) Canard and Oregon City has made a statement! #WitteStyle Grateful. Mary & Ned W.

A bit of a letdown

Gabriel Rucker is a James Beard Award-winning, amazing chef, which is why I was so excited to try out Canard, his latest offering. The Good: 1)The Foie Gras Dumplings are an absolute must! Exceptional. Bravo. 2) The Steam Burgers are delicious. Think White Castle, but amazing. 3)Chicken wings drizzled with honey. Yes, please. 4) The Foie Turn cocktail was exceptional. The Meh: 1) The Oysters were great quality, but the mignonette was weak. 2) The Pot de Canard was a unimpressive. 3) The Touch-N-Go cocktails falls flat. P.S. Mr. Rucker, Please put that Duck Fat Poutine on the Menu! The entire staff flocked to the kitchen when it was ready. We felt like we were missing out on this masterpiece...

Ambiance

The food is good, atmosphere is great, wine was great. My dish, the burgundy beef was good, appetizers we had were very good. The small setting was very enjoyable, restaurant isn't overly loud so a great place if you want to also have a conversation.

Unbelievable experience

From the moment I walked in with my father, we were greeted by a young lady with a giant, infectious smile that set the tone for the rest of the evening. Come to find out, her name is Hannah and she knows the way to run a place with incredible staff and amazing offerings. Started with a dealer’s choice on a glass of wine for both of us, she brought out a 2002 Riesling which was to my father’s delight (who doesn’t know much about wine) refreshing and one of the best he has had. From there on, the night got better and better. Starting with the rest of the staff. Benjamin took care of us with great recommendations regarding pairings, overall suggestions and true hospitality. A special shout out to the chefs needs to be put out there as well since the cabbage salad I had and the, what we are calling, truffle chicken wings he had were some of the most incredible flavors experienced. Canard is exquisite to start or end your night as well as making it be your night, I guarantee it will be the highlight of your night regardless. If you want to feel at home from start to finish with amazing drink choices and food selections, make time to go to Canard, you will remember it forever. This is Portland and this is great, you will feel like you’re already part of their family. 10 out of 10 Canard. Keep it up.

Portland quirky, but still average

By Twotravelers1935 |

Had lunch here this week. Canard is small and "cozy" Most seating is at bar or on hard wood stools at the bar or around the sides. Friendly staff until server disappeared after taking our order. In fact, I could not get her attention despite waving while she was delivering food at nearby table. Our two goat cheese omlets were finally delivered about 20-30 minutes after ordering. They were OK, but only average, certainly not worth the long wait. So disappointing adfter reading the great reviews .

Great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

By Hov1015 |

I visited Canard twice on a recent trip to Portland. My first stop was on a Saturday afternoon. We started on the midafternoon menu with the oeufs and kale salad along with a great bottle of wine. We were there for the switch to the dinner menu and then had the paella croquettes, steam burgers, and garlic fries. All so delish and it was fun to sit at the chef counter. Went back for breakfast Monday morning and I had the stuffed mushroom benedict with a champagne cocktail and my brother had the duck stack. Literally everything I had there, a good chunk of the menu, was delicious. Dont hesitate to visit!

Looking for somewhere quiet and casual for lunch. Couldn't have been luckier. Service was friendly and prompt. Lunch menu was small but not limited - some great choices. Food was very fresh and extremely tasty. Had the Quinoa Veggie Bowl .. SOOO good!
