Classic Canter's

By rawandhonest |

During my weekend in LA I stayed three blocks from Canter's Deli and found the atmosphere to be both bustling and friendly for a 24-hour restaurant. During the breakfast rush one morning I just wanted a coffee to go and was promptly greeted and assisted by the gentleman at the front counter. After looking this up online I learned they've been around since 1931 and offer delivery too.

Great Jewish Deli but not kosher

By Norjeff2 |

We got in early as the restaurant closed for Rosh Hashanah. Huge restaurant that is normally open 24 hours. I had the stuffed cabbage with kasha varnishkes. Both were very good and extremely large portions. My wife had the faux corned beef sandwich. She liked it. My son had the real corned beef and loved it. Nice size sandwich. If you are looking for a real Jewish deli in LA, this is a great place to go. Last time my son was here, he was Newman from Seinfeld. Waiter said stars routinely come in. Tip: parking lot on the corner. Restaurant will validate.

Meh

By Heather |

Our original waiter brought water and disappeared so Jeanette stepped in and she was great. I had a turkey ruben with kettle chips; the turkey was dry, but the chips were very good. I think I expected more from such a historic restaurant.

Excellent pastrami!

By osuddg |

Since Langer's wasn't open the day we were in LA, we decided to try Canters. The pastrami on rye was just as good as Langer's. The service was great and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the old decor in the restaurant. We actually ate there twice, once in June and once in July.

Mediocre

By pink_princess_2003 |

I was absolutely dying to go to this restaurant after hearing about it for years. I love pastrami, and I love reubens. The quality of the meat was excellent as people have said, and the fruit cup hreally did exude a love for picking the best quality fruit. It was fun to be at an old school deli. The sandwich was just OK and very overpriced; the Russian dressing wasn’t great to me, and I even tried the sandwich with mustard to see if that would save it, but it didn’t help. I have limited mobility and was shocked to find out that I would have to climb stairs to use the bathroom due to the bathroom being on the second floor, and there is no elevator. When I got to the top of the stairs, I was met with a very dirty floor. It made, me regret ordering food at that establishment to see a floor so dirty. This place may have been amazing in the old days, but I recommend trying another place instead. We will not be going back.

Nice try, but can't compare top a good NY deli

By Bob F |

The menu looks very much like a classic New York City kosher-style deli -- conrned beef, pastrami, stuffed derma, kashe varnishkas, etc. But when it comes to quality Canter’s is a pretender. Meats are sliced on a machine, not by hand, and are kept warm by a means other than steaming, because some of the patrami served to us was burnt to a crisp in the heating process. The kashe was mushy -- kind of like hot breakfast cereal. Service is pleasant, if a bit slow, and prices are lower than in New York. But you get what you pay for.

Great Matzo Ball Soup

By L. MacGregor |

Hands down the BEST Matzo Ball Soup my family has ever had. The golden broth is deeply savory & the massive matzo ball is tender & buttery. It's a matter of personal preference so that being said, we were not impressed with our dinners of Cornbeef & Cabbage, especially at the price point. It was alright but not great. Canter's has a cool retro vibe. The service was friendly & attentive. Would I go back? Absolutely! The Matzo Ball Soup is worth the hour drive.

As always great food!

By Road625092 |

We went to an early breakfast and as always food was great and fast! Previously, we have only been here for lunch ( which is so good i.e. pastrami Reuben!) and everything is so inexpensive! A great place to eat while shopping up and down Fairfax!

An LA Classic

By Sara S |

Cant beat their matzah ball soup and its the only place to get a respectable black and white cookie in LA.

MY FAVORITE DELI RESTAURANT IN LA

By David H |

I go here every time I go to L.A. for breakfast or brunch and have their blintzes. Doesn't look like a large sererving when you get them, but damn they are rich and tasty. The sandwiches are great too - try the reuben + the matzo ball soup is good too. The take out bakery at the front is worth going to if you just need to grab something to go or for later - yummy fresh baked goods. Service is freindly, a mix of older and younger servers. The ceiling is gorgeous and it makes the experience great. They do have a parking lot next door with attendant which wasn't very expensive. It is n;t too cheap but a classic experience you should do while in LA. Just go here. Also a good place to spot celebs from time ti time.

Classic LA Deli with food like grandma made.

By Alan661 |

I have been visiting this classic restaurant since the 60's and not has changed! What can be said about a classic deli that looks about the same. While corned beef sandwiches are my go to favorite, I was pleased with the corned beef, but disappointed that the ryebread was cold and not very fresh, like I've had before or at other deli's. My wife really liked her matzo ball soup that she rated as on the best that she has had. Service was good and with an attitude, that you would expect in a classic old time deli with long term employees. If you were raised on Jewish foods, like I have, you are grateful to find a classic deli like Canter's that still makes dishes like grandma made.

Wonderful food for any meal or snack.

By Crazy Cat Lady |

Amazing place for any meal. We loaded up on goodies from the bakery to take with us. We had the latkes as they'd come highly recommended (and they were amazing). We visited the Kibbitz room to listen to music as my friend's son was playing that night. It was delightful.

Average food

By Margot C |

We had lunch here with some friends. We ordered the pastrami sandwich, hot dog with fries, french toast and bacon and the Belgium waffle. All was ok, except the waffle that none of us liked. Something sweet was put in it and it really did not taste like a Belgium waffle should taste. Overall average - nothing to rave about.

Lived up to its reputation!

By AndreaM2011 |

I've never visited before and we picked a late morning to go when it would be less busy. Ordered traditional items: shared potato pancakes and I had a Reuben. Good service and food came quickly. Fun to look at the owner's memorabilia.

Been coming for years

By dennis g |

Cantor's is by far one of the best deli's in LA. Atmosphere alone it would come in first. It's like walking into once upon a time in Hollywood. The food is always good & plenty of it. The Bakery & deli counters are worked by skilled people who will be honest & give the best .

A GREAT FIRST TASTE AT A JEWISH DELI

By dag1685 |

Marvellous food, great ambiance. This was first visit and if I were living in L.A. permanently I would come back again. It really was surprisingly good.

Mid Century Matzah

By John S |

A long awaited visit to one of LAs best known 24 hour delis did not disappoint. The decor is preserved as it should be, the hustle and banter with our server was fun and pricing was quite reasonable. The Matzah ball soup is simply wonderful and I learned that trying to have to the soup then a main course really was a stretch. Parking is available on the adjoining lot. Visiting LA, visit Canters! Loved it.

Classic, legendary delicatessen since 1931

By Angela3950 |

Came to take a photo of the wonderful neon signs flanking Canter’s exterior but stayed for a fantastic corned beef on rye with house made dill pickles, potato salad and a side of matzo ball soup. Taleen (hope I spelled that right ;) was our awesome server and gave us a little history, a bit of celeb stuff, also encouraging us to look around at the photos and memorabilia dotted around the place. My corned beef, nice and lean, on crusty rye with spicy brown mustard was a gastronomic delight. I could eat one of these for days. The one big matzo ball was a bit daunting (I kinda prefer them dumpling sized) but still good. We ordered a slab of NY style cheesecake to-go but I’m really not sure WHAT it was, not good to me at all. Weird texture and oddly flavored, the only not-so-good food item. We parked in the lot but it’s kinda sketchy-the lot, the street and the gutters look like they haven’t been maintained in many years. Such an iconic place in such disrepair, it made me sad. Regardless, go anyway, park in the lot, hide your valuables and eat a delicious lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

By caltrip |

Everything a person could want from a real deli. Vast menu. Great staff. We had a lunch of corned beef (well trimmed) on rye sandwiches, pickles, slaw, and soup for lunch. If we'd had the time, we would have returned over and over to try other menu items. AND they have their own parking lot.

Old school Deli that's still doing it right!

By Len H |

Canter’s Deli is more than just a restaurant, it’s an iconic Los Angeles landmark. While the nostalgia is undeniable, the food is what truly shines. The pastrami sandwich is as good as it gets, piled high with tender, flavorful meat. The matzo ball soup is comforting and hearty, the perfect remedy for a cold winter day. And don’t forget the black and white cookies, a sweet treat that’s hard to resist. I have been going to it since i was a little kid, and im sure if you bring your family they will continue to love it for years to come.

Food is just ok. Service is not what you might expect. I would not go back.

By Flavio R |

Food is ok, the omelet and hash brown were done properly but the waiters could not care less for the clients. The restaurant itself is not clean at all, I can't even mention how bad the restrooms were. In LA you can get better food, cleanliness, and service for the price you're paying.

Excellent food, atmosphere and history

By rodrigoaraya2205 |

This historic Los Angeles restaurant not only delivers exquisite dishes, but also transports you to the history and spirit of the city. Run by its own owners, Marc and Jacqueline Canter, who are very cordial and kind. Marc is also a friend of Slash from Guns N' Roses, and photographed the band in its beginnings, so you will be able to see some of these photos and even a gold record won by this notable group. About the food, try the Reuben. They will thank me! It has parking on the side, very convenient. Totally recommended!!

Best Deli Hands-down!

By Lemon Cat 9 |

This is my favorite place to hit up in LA! Best deli food. Everything I have eaten here is outstanding. Bagel cream cheese is wonderful!! The only thing I will say about the cheesecake is that it has a hint of lemon or lime in it. It’s not as creamy as I like my cheesecake. It’s thick tasting. Not fluffy. The fudge dipped cupcakes are to DIE FOR!!!

Good sandwiches, soups, salads. Comfort food.

By joaniemaria |

We stopped on a Friday around 5:30 pm. It was not very busy. We sat in a booth in the back area near the bar. I was surprised it was not busier. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. We had sandwiches and soup. Turkey and cheese on rye, pastrami, vegetable beef soup, barley bean soup, pickles, chips. All was very good. On the way out, we bought goodies at the bakery area for dessert to take out. All items were delicious and it was tough deciding what to buy. I would return. Many celebrities have eaten here, but we did not see any on our visit.

Fine food - service was average

By Kwi_kwa_ju |

The food was simple. Somewhat expensive for what we got. We were in the second dining area that looked old in a not really nice way. The service was very average. We won’t go there again.

not a fan

By BellaFella82 |

Maybe this place is nostalgic for some older folk, but as a first timer I can safely say I won't be back. Overpriced and basically crappy poor diner food.

A must eat every time I am in LA

By SJWilliams |

This is a great old-school New York style deli. Probably hasn't changed since the 50's. Open 24x7 and free parking. I always get a pastrami reuben. This time I was there on a Wednesday so I tried their split pea soup - delicious. My friend had the matzo ball soup and said it was the best she'd ever had. Good bloody mary's too. Lots of seating so there never seems to be a wait but I am usually there on the late side so can't comment on the waits at more traditional dining times.

Great breakfast

By Ian C |

A typical deli in Los Angeles. The best corn beef sandwiches,a massively varied breakfast menu. Great service, also does takeaway.

A classic that never gets old

By LuvTravel |

We love this place! Have been going for 40 years and never disappoints. Had delicious lunch yesterday, the best whitefish salad yet. Everything we ordered was fresh and our waiter was very nice and service prompt. We’ll be back on our next visit to LA.

Was to be an End to a Perfect Day

By Travel1763 |

It’s been quite a while since we’ve been to Canter’s and chose to go because of the lifelong experiences that have always been motivated me to want to come back. Well, the experience was not what I had hoped for or been looking forward to. The seating was fast and that was where it ended. The menu is still the same as it relates to food choices, the prices are higher, the portions smaller and during this visit, the “hot” food was not hot and the onion rings were burnt. The service was lacking, we ended up having to stay longer after eating because the server did not come back until we were able to get her attention and flagged her over. The restaurant was not that busy, our food should’ve been hot and the server more attentive, we must start tipping based on our experience rather than doing the right thing! In summary, I used to enjoy the food so much more than I do now so no immediate plans to return.

A classic!

By Reed |

Canter’s Deli is an LA classic and a must visit for anyone who loves that old school deli feel. All the staples are on the menu and the old timey look of the inside rounds out the experience. Food is very solid if not a bit overpriced. Bakery is by weight for a lot of items so expect to pay more than you think. Parking is free in the lot next to the building if you are eating. Service isn’t the best on most of our visits, but the people watching makes up for it!

Oh yeah!

By Patfinkelstein |

Now that is good corned beef! Been to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Palm Springs and Canter’s rates right up there with the best! Cheese blintzes were to die for as well as the service we received. Enjoyed late night dinner so much we had to go back to try breakfast. Never ever have had corned beef hash so delicious. Will definitely be a regular stop on our LA trips.

Classic Jewish LA delhi

By Mohan B |

If this disappearing food genre is appealing to you & your in LA certainly a must try. Also a happening attached bar with a local scene. Of course a good take out bakery.

Great Food & Service

By 20Twenty |

I’m glad my daughter took me back to this LA landmark. Delicious sandwiches, yummy matzo ball soup and best of all, old school service!

Food was ok, but service is awful

By Michelle H |

The food was just ok. The potato pancakes were very doughy and needed seasoning. The pastrami on rye was very good and so were the pickles. The service was absolutely horrible. We asked for drink refills and the waitress didn’t even look our way, but said ‘in a minute’ while walking away. It was not busy at all that day.

Very well known and popular Jewish deli

By Mitch H |

One of the few places in Los Angeles that offers traditional Jewish deli food. Great service great food in the bakery is fantastic as well good corn beef good pastrami and their matzo ball of our soup is excellent. Everything is available to go..

Pastrami heaven

By Brigadoon |

This is what America is built on! Yes it’s seen better days, no they should never change it, yes the food is as good as you’d find on the Upper East Side, no the clientele aren’t insta idiots! Lovely Jewish deli with great pancakes and sandwiches (I was told to go for the Ruebens and it didn’t disappoint).

Outpost of classic Jewish deli

By Shanelle |

Jewish deli with a tasty pastrami Reuben. Came here prior to going to the Skirball Center exhibit of the Jewish Deli (so it was very apropos). You order at the screen and an employee will bring your food out to you. Most people seemed to opt for takeout but there were a couple of people dining inside (no outdoor spots). There’s a small shared lot but parking is a bit cramped. Credit cards are accepted. The employees were all super nice and thoughtfully divided up our sandwich into two plates and got us some ice waters proactively. The Reuben was delicious - one half will definitely satisfy you plus it comes with fries and pickles on the side. The Russian dressing comes in a separate container as well. You’d come here more for the food than the ambiance, but overall, it’s a classic spot for some pastrami.

Quintessential deli

By TripFan18 |

If you want to eat in a quintessential deli while in LA, Canter’s is a good choice. The ambience cannot be beat. The wait staff was incredibly attentive as every time I turned to just look around, someone was asking if they could get me something. My husband and I shared the fish platter which was definitely enough for the two of us. The highlight of the visit was seeing David Letterman being interviewed in the adjacent dining room. Our only celebrity sighting while in LA!

You Should Visit At Least Once in Your Life

By moviegal226 |

Canter's Deli is a true Los Angeles icon. You've likely read about it in books or have seen it in television shows, movies, and other areas of pop culture. Realizing that I'd never been to eat there, I decided to go on my last visit to L.A. We dined around noon on a weekday, and the deli was mostly empty. We were quickly seated and our server, who likely has been working here for decades, was efficient and friendly enough. We got a pastrami sandwich, a turkey sandwich, and cheese fries. The sandwiches were expensive and mostly disappointing. The meat was okay, but there wasn't much of it. The bread didn't feel or taste fresh either. I love deli sandwiches more than just about any other type of food, but these left a negligible impression. The plate of deli pickles fared better, as they were crisp and tangy and quite tasty. The cheese fries were the best item we ordered, but it's hard to mess up fried potatoes with melty cheddar! The sweet potato fries were a soggy and limp disappointment. I'm glad I came here because you can practically feel the rock n' roll and movie history in the old school booths, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. Still, it's worth coming by for dessert at least so you can snap a few photos. The deli has its own parking lot, but you should be able to find cheap metered parking on the street out front.

Best NY deli in LA

By Dwaffle1145 |

Best NY deli in LA. We are from NY. There in NY the Jewish and German delis are being phasing out for taco shops, pizza places, falafel and other ethnic food joints. Losing heritage. Here at Canters - Great traditional soups, sandwiches (esp. pastrami that is rarely found at this level of quality) and sides ie. NY cole slaw and potato salad. Loved it. PS Waitstaff is not California high - get there in a minute dude, it's on the spot!

Top of the list!

By Karen B |

Very time we are in LA we fine are way to Canter's. The food and service is outstanding. If it's just us a the group. A fun place to enjoy.

Old school deli

By triciam214 |

Had a great breakfast on a recent Sunday morning. Staff was exceptionally friendly (host & server). Food was tasty. Corned beef hash came in the shape of a loaf (new one one me) and not overly tasty. Kids loved their gigantic plates of pancakes. All & all I recommend although breakfast for four: $75! Ouch! Welcome to L.A. Grab some cookies on the way out!

Legendary Deli Open 24 Hours. An Iconic Spot in LA.

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Legendary Kosher Deli found in the Fairfax district of LA, located here since 1931. It's an old school place that hasn't changed in appearance since the 1950s. It's feels like stepping back in time. It's a huge place so never much of a wait to get a table. Open 24 hours and it's an iconic place to stop in late at night after being out on the town. Don't be surprised if you see someone famous in here as it is a popular spot with locals as much as tourists. The food is consistently good. The classic pastrami on rye was excellent. Service can be spotty but that is not why you come here.

Delicious old skool vibe

By TravelFun_seekerz |

Popped in for lunch on a SoCal trip, everything we hoped for. The place is a bit gritty. Old leather booths. They give you a nice platter of pickles when you arrive, pickles were mild, not too pickly. Tried a small assortment of options and all were delicious. The reuben wasn't huge, but very tasty. Matzo ball soup was good. Surprisingly I think the philly cheese steak was my favorite. Eat and enjoy yourself, but save room for desert. They have a very impressive display of cookies and backed goods in the front. My wife walked through with the 3-year old and the nice old lady behind the glass insisted on giving our kiddo a couple free cookies! Of course the rest of us wanted to stop by after lunch and grab an assortment so good saleswomanship for sure. Will definitely be hitting up Canter's Deli if we're ever in the area again. It is what it is and I really enjoyed it.

The Real Deal

By John F |

Nothing bad to say, except it gets crowded. For this New Yorker, this is the real deal - and a saving grace when I'm sick (matzoh ball soup... actually mish mash). Just trust me.

Disappointing

By DrJerryLosAngeles_CA |

The matzoh ball soup lacked taste. The matzoh brei was dry. The fillings in the avocado toast sandwich were not evenly spread. The pastrami sandwich, though, was quite good though smaller than served in Manhattan and in our own Langer’s. All things considered, I don’t plan to go back there. The food quality is mediocre and it ain’t cheap.

Favorite LA deli

By AnnaDLA |

Not to be missed for any visitor to Los Angeles as this restaurant is probably the best deli in town and as a tradition. So many delicious options to choose from, Matza ball soup to corned beef sandwiches with cole slaw and Russian dressing. Be sure to leave room to grab a treat for dessert on the way out from the absolutely amazing bakery with so many tempting sweet treats you’ll need to take some home too. Definitely worth a visit and be sure you’re really hungry.

Just Wonderful

By lefitch013 |

My fiancé and I went to Canter's Deli and absolutely loved it. The food was incredible as well as our drinks. We really liked our waiter and the atmosphere. I got the Marilyn Monroe and my fiancé got the pancakes. We both loved our meals!

A classic Jewish deli that didn’t disappoint

By oldtiredandretired |

Exactly as expected, an absolutely epic experience. I have visited Jewish delis all over the world and Canters doesn’t disappoint. From being greeted to the table service everything probably hadn’t changed in 25 years. The food was amazing! Classic smoked meat sandwich, latkes, blintzes and of course real home style crunchy pickles. There was a great sign saying “where ladies go to eat, not where ladies go to lunch” Absolutely recommend this place and be sure to go hungry and don’t forget to get takeout at their in store bakery.

Hasn't lost it.

By EvJer17 |

One of the oldest delis in Los Angeles and still has the best corned beef in town. In recent years the average age of the servers is getting younger.

A Los Angeles Classic

By Mike W |

If you live in LA, you have to eat here at least once. It is an iconic restaurant. They have a huge menu of excellent food, they’re open 24/7, they have parking, and they always have open seats. These four things are rare to find in a famous LA restaurant. It is everything you expect.

I visited there many times during my work in the area

By peoplehavetheri... . |

Canter's is one of "those places" I went to for the great Jewish Deli that I also used to go to VERY long ago in Panorama City (Rothbard's - RIP). Mile high pastrami on rye is the standard but there are also enough other menu items plus that glass case for all the baked goods...makes me sad that I now live in Arizona and miss it very much. I just remember really good food and lots of it, friendly and kind staff. I need an excuse to come over to enjoy it all again! Other Jewish delis I've gone too just don't have the same food and atmosphere. Hope you folks never change.

Old school, needs a facelift

By goldtravel |

Great authentic Jewish deli. Old school at its best. Full of characters but lacking a bit of character because it desperately needs a renovation. Bathrooms are dirty and need upgrading. It’s time.

Great for any meal

By Crazy Cat Lady |

Great food choices for any meal. We had latkes which were as amazing. They'd come highly recommended. We also purchased several goodies from the bakery. It has the most wonderful selections. We also enjoyed the music in the Kibitz Room. The atmosphere was so friendly and the music was great. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire visit.

The best of everything!!!!

By Lemon Cat 9 |

The best of everything!!!! Sandwiches, Soups, Desserts!!!! Customer services. Everything here is on point!

Late night snacks!

By B Bell |

The main reason I’d come back to Canter’s is for the retro decor and excellent people watching. The food was alright, but not the best part of the visit.

Good Burger and Service but Turkey Very Dry

By NiPat5 |

Came for lunch and ordered the burger which was cooked well and the BBQ sauce was a good touch. My wife and kid ordered turkey sandwiches and both said the turkey was very dry. I tried it myself and I disliked it as well. There was no moisture or taste to it. On the bright side the service was very friendly.

Top Worst Breakfast I've Ever Had!

By Mori N. |

I am absolutely flabbergasted that this place high reviews. If I could give it 0 stars I would. We decided to check it out for breakfast because of that. It is honestly probably the top worst experiences I've had dining out for breakfast. The atmosphere is poor, but we thought maybe the food will make up for it. The food was worse than the atmosphere. My bagel was freezer burnt and since they reheated it, it was very stale and old. My "thick cut bacon" as they like to call it - was cold, rubbery and burnt, as well as, covered with greaser dirt as you can see on the picture. My eggs were cold and the bottom again brown greasy dirt from their grill I'm assuming. My husband's pancakes were also cold served with a side of (completely melted butter) and the bacon as disgusting. Before we started eating, our waitress told us that if the food is cold she'd heated up for us, which was odd. So, she plopped the bacon, pancakes and all of it in the microwave and it was worse than the beginning. I told our waitress about the quality of the food, but didn't take it further because she as an elderly woman in her 70's and she seemed genuinely apologetic and what I sensed right off was that the owner/manager was not at all interested in fixing the situation nor did he/she care. On top of it all, there were workers constantly walking around dining tables with their dirty buckets full of dirty dishes. Absolutely disgusting! We lost our appetites and wanted to leave. Asked for the cheque and we were CHARGED FOR ALL OF IT. FOOD I HAD NOT EATEN WHICH WAS ALL BUT THE COFFEE I WAS CHARGED FOR. I mentioned this to the waitress, but she said she has to charge me. To the owner: Do yourself a favour and close this place down. It's an insult and a disgrace.

Good Deli food

By RD430 |

The restaurant definitely has a retro feel and has a menu that is similar to a New York deli. We had a Pastrami Reuben and Pastrami club- both were excellent. The pastrami doesn't disappoint. The service was excellent and fast. Will go again when we're in the area. Will try some bakery items- must be good, there was a long line.

Celebratory dinner after school performance

By Lena K |

My nephew played the piano for his school’s production of, “The Lion King.” After the program, we went to Canter’s Delicatessen and Restaurant for dinner. He was famished and finished all of his Macaroni and Cheese AND chicken strips! Parking was a challenge since the restaurant’s lot was full, but street parking could be found.

Great Old Deli

By Art911 |

Had excellent T-Day dinner. Good portions and great service. Apple turnover was a little disappointing. Everything else was very good.

Crusty appearance, great food!

By Kevin R |

The deli, great food. Ya get what you pay for! Eclectic patrons. All sorts go here, a great place to people watch. But the food has been consistent since I have been coming here long ago. Some people say it is dirty. I like to think it fits the character of it's reputation. The bakery, second to none. We come from a long way away just to get goodies for the fam and they always rave on how good it is. Worth it!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE

By Erica M |

Please do yourself a favor and find another deli. The hostess and managers are extremely rude and standoffish and it’s very obvious they could care less about their customers. My boyfriend called and asked if they could confirm if their chicken rice soup was gluten free or not. Both the hostess and manager would not only confirm or deny, they wouldn’t give him any active ingredients in the soup. They were SO rude and said they had no idea what the chef’s put in their soups?! How does a manager not know this information? I know I will not be a returning customer! Terrible place.

Average food

By Linda L |

We were seated quickly. Waiter was friendly enough. Menu choices limited for the vegetarians in the group. Ended up with an order of potato pancakes (excellent), a Reuben (very good), and macaroni and cheese (very gritty). Macaroni and cheese was supposed to come with bread, but it wasn't delivered until we were packing up our leftovers. My spouse had raved about this place but I was completely underwhelmed. Spouse can return if they choose, I'll go someplace else next time we're in the area.

Don’t miss this classic LA gem

By Kenneth H |

A not to be missed gem in Los Angeles. Classic and old Hollywood vibe which I hope never changes, wonderful food and portions. Staff is very courteous and friendly. Apologies for the gross picture but that was the end of the story for my pastrami Benedict which was out of this world. Can’t wait to return.

Our last visi to Canters

By chefrene_12 |

We been going on and off to this restaurant since 1972. We enjoyed the sandwiches, Borscht and matzo ball soup. My wife had a minestrone soup that was tasteless and almost no vegetables and I had Barley soup that was also tasteless. We each had half of sandwich that was good. The chocolate croissant had way to much chocolate chips that... overpowered the flaky croissant dough. Our waitress Candice was very nice and always checking with us. We were disappointed to see how filthy the surroundings .and the parking lot are. Also beggars asking for money and food. , this is

A Hollywood classic - must go!

By Paul R |

We had breakfast there - it's a throw-back diner, that still serves great food. The Monte cristo and the Reuben are fantastic. It's iconic, and a must go!

Good food, excellent bakery

By Lena K |

While visiting my sister and her husband, we decided to have lunch at Canter's Delicatessen. They both chose the omelette, my granddaughter chose the cheeseburger with fries, while I chose the half sandwich with cole slaw and soup. As we passed the bakery, we couldn't leave without getting apple pies!

Good location for a meal

By Lena K |

After visiting the Griffith Observatory, my granddaughter and I met my sister, her son and his girlfriend at Canter’s Deli for dinner. We sat in a booth. The food was only adequate today, but on previous visits, the food was fantastic.

A Los Angeles institution!

By BruinDan |

Opened in1931, Canter’s Deli is a Jewish-style delicatessen located in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District, not far from the border of West Hollywood. It is open 24 hours and has its own parking lot at the northwest corner of Fairfax and Oakwood Avenues. I have many memories of visiting Canter’s late at night and ordering breakfast back when I was a college student during the early-to-mid 1970s. So when my wife’s relatives from Norway visited and wanted to check out both the museum and Hollywood scene, we thought that Canter’s would be a convenient (and very “LA”) lunch destination. Upon entering, I was nostalgically pleased that the deli counter, dining room and menu (aside from the prices) hadn’t changed much in over 40 years. The biggest change was in the wait staff – gone were the middle-aged Jewish waitresses who always called me “Hon,” replaced by male Hispanic servers, a reflection of the changing neighborhood demographics. On our visit our party ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad along with some deli classics like a Pastrami Reuben, chicken noodle soup, and a Canter’s Fairfax (pastrami and corned beef on rye). Aside from the soup, which was a bit bland, the food did not disappoint – we left full and happy. The service was friendly and attentive, and both the dining room and rest rooms were clean and tidy. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Canter’s and hope it continues to thrive for another 88 years!

You Can Count on Canter's!

By GofromCA |

We go to Canter's at least three times a month - usually for lunch on a weekend. It is the most reliable and delicious medium-priced restaurant! In other words, you order something and it tastes the same, and tastes good - every time. Most of the servers are very helpful, the pickles are delicious, the parking lot attendant is nice. It's so nice to see a wide range of people enjoying this Deli. When you look around, people look happy here. They look like they are enjoying their meal and each other. My only caveat is if you are taking a handicapped person, call and ask them if there is an accessible restroom. The bathrooms I know about are very old and not accessible - but maybe they have a special one I don't know about -

Not open 24 hrs anymore and they don’t informed us

By Cielorrosa |

The place is not open 24hrs anymore. We arrived around 11:40 pm. We ordered a sandwich, a hamburger steak with sides and a couple of beverages. At 12 they were asking us to pay. Waiter was very friendly and “he said he needed to fill out some paperwork to complete his shift”. Then, one of the owners kept pacing around our table. At 12:20 she tells us “ladies, we are closed, do you need boxes?” Very rude. If place is not open 24hrs anymore, it shouldn’t be the sign outside, they should update Google information and when you come in close to closing, you let the costumers know. We could have ordered to go, but we wanted to eat out and not be kicked out of a place. We didn’t even had time to finish. If it wasn’t for the nice waiter that served us, the experience would have been a complete disaster.

Great food

By Aussie2424 |

Great food and good prices. Great service...it was busy so you know it's a good place to eat. I had the turkey salad sandwich, yummy.

The RAW DEAL

By Red V |

Lean flavorful meat stacked high with crusty rye. The terrible rating is for the jealous competitors.

Retro NY style deli

We came here for lunch after being out in the cold and rain all day. It was exactly what we needed. The sandwiches are incredible and the service is great too. Love the retro decor. Visit if you can!

Back away from the vegetarian matzo ball!

By stalbansroamer |

Canter's is an institution, so it was with high expectations that a family member and I visited the deli at the end of 2023. 15 minutes queuing was OK (it's a popular place), but waiting a further 15 minutes to get served was not. The waitress was overworked and stressed but very friendly and apologetic. There were few vegetarian options and I chose the matzo ball soup and an ersatz beef sandwich. The sandwich was OK (although the fries were uninspiring) but the matzo ball soup was tasteless and best avoided. Overall, rather disappointing. Oh, and the place needs a refresh.

Hangover Cure

By SGavin |

This 24 hour long standing instruction is a must stop. A Bloody Mary and a Corned Beef or Pastrami will cure any hangover. Love the Knish too. Service is great from old school middle aged staff. Lots of great baked goods so grab a bag to go. Not necessarily a budget spot though.

Great Deli Experience

Our family of five enjoyed a great deli experience here.Bottomless coffee, delicious deli sandwiches, awesome smoked salmon bagels and a whole plate of pickles.Everything we had heard about a deli and more.Wish we had this in Australia. Best service of our LA trip

A classic deli in downtown LA

By pmr68 |

Entering Canter’s Deli is like stepping back in time. The decor is reminiscent of the 50’s. We stopped in for a quick lunch and were not disappointed. My husband and I shared a brisket dip sandwich. It was very good and plenty to share.

Classic LA breakfast

By DagEidem73 |

It has become a habit to have breakfast at Canter's when in LA. Good food, large menu and some cool history. No particular favourite, but recommend one of their many good sandwiches

They lost it.

By Josefin M |

I was here 8 years ago and this place is nothing like it used to be. The food is really expensive and it really tastes bad. We asked the waiter what was in our food, he then asked the chef and the chef couldn’t tell. The coke tastes chlorine so they probably blend it out with water. This place is nothing like it used to be.. really sorry to say.

82 OLD AND STILL ONE OF THE BEST!!

By etonave |

Whild there may be a dispute as to who has the best pastrami in Los Angeles, and which is overall best deli in LA, Canter's holds its own as one of the top three, Langers and Brents being the others. Canter's "decor" may be considered old fashioned, ordinary or even a bit odd, (oh that ceiling), but when it comes to food, it doesn"t disappoint. Get tyere before 10:30 AM any day and enjoy an amazing breakfast menu topped at $10. A perdon, including bagel and coffee. Best of all, in a town that goes to bed early, Canter's is open 24/7. Try it, you'll like it!

This place rocks

This legendary deli didn’t fail, great atmosphere and flavoursome food....staff are lovely. A must visit deli if you’re in or near West Hollywood

Everything we are in LA we try to visit Canter's. The food is excellent and service is always good. The corned beef and pastrami is piled high.

Iconic but underwhelmed

By GUNN704 |

This was my second visit to this Hollywood landmark and expected the same tasty typically Jewish Deli fare. I was surprised that not one dish we had seemed to have that extra umph I remembered from the first visit. We ordered matzo ball soup and a chicken noodle soup to start. A potato knish and a corned beef sandwich that was pretty tastless and under filled from what you'd expect from Canters Also ordered a non deli item, their mac and cheese that tasted like it was straight out of a velveeta box. My partner ordered a coke that he never received. The bakery products looked amazing but didn't order any as Passover starts tomorrow. I was disappointed.

Classic delicatessen in LA!

By Buffalogirl41 |

We had so much fun at Canter's, great Bloody Mary's, great white fish salad, matzo ball soup, corned beef, I could go on and on! The waitress was sassy and fun and great with our kiddos. On the way out we grabbed a black and white cookie, which was delicious! The pictures of President Obama's visit were also so much fun to see!

SOME OF THE BEST DELI FOOD IN LOS ANGELES

By 707clayg |

What a great fun place to finally go to and eat. It is always busy and is open 24 hours a day. It was very clean the staff was superb and friendly and the food was fantastic. I will have to say the pastrami is the best I have ever ate. The hot turkey dinner is piled high with turkey, the rubin sanwitches were the best with their house made dressing and pickles, the fries were very good but the onion rings were great. We were there on a busy Sunday afternoon but the wait was about fifteen minutes to get a table, really fast with four of us in the group. I can not say enough about the friendly servers and staff, the best I have seen in a while. The restrooms were well maintained and clean even with the constant use. I now wish I lived closer so I could visit more often, I do not go to the Wilshire district very often. We had spent the day at the Peterson museum down the street this time and was ready for a big tasty lunch.

Best deli/diner in Los Angeles since 1931

By Taylor B |

When you think of delicatessens, you usually think of New York and Chicago. Add Canter's Deli in Los Angeles to the list. Recognized as the best Jewish-style deli in Los Angeles since 1931, it offers an authentic deli-style experience unparalleled anywhere on the West Coast. Serving breakfast for 24 hours a day for seven days a week, with the best pastrami and pastries in the city according to the Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly, Canter's Deli has been a go-to destination for many Hollywood celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Benny, Sidney Poitier, Wilt Chamberlain, Muhammad Ali and Stevie Wonder. Originally, the Canter family opened its first deli in 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey. They moved to Boyle Heights on Brooklyn Avenue in Los Angeles, then to Fairfax Avenue. Since 1953, Canter's Deli and its 1950s decor has been a fixture at 419 North Fairfax Avenue in the city's Beverly Grove neighborhood, between Oakwood and Rosewood, in the Miracle Mile District. They also have a location at 12109 Santa Monica Boulevard. Staples on the menu include matzo ball soup, hot pastrami sandwich, hot corned beef sandwich, fresh baked bread and house-made pickles. Love the breakfast, and the conversation, at Canter's. I had Eggs Benedict with poached eggs, Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin with potatoes, sausage, oatmeal, Danish pastry and fresh squeezed orange juice. For a late-night snack, I had a bowl of minestrone, Caesar salad with Romaine lettuce, grated parmesan and Caesar dressing with chicken breast, a hot Monte Cristo sandwich with oven-roasted turkey, ham and Swiss cheese dipped in egg and grilled on Challah egg bread with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup. With fries, a chocolate milk shake and a slice of apple pie. Some snack. Some deli.

Can’t say enough good things about the food and people here! Food is wonderful. Cupcakes & sweets are AMAZING! Staff so helpful. Got our order to go this time. We forgot our soda. Circled back to get it & staff gave us two for our troubles. Can’t wait to visit again !

Yum and fun!

Great food. Fun atmosphere. Our waiter was fantastic, funny, engaging and dry. Love the old school vibe. We had various pastrami sandwiches and cakes- all delicious. Bit of a wait but worth it.

Best deli in the southwest. Maybe more

By hdmarc1956 |

this place has the old school feeling, so if you are looking for fancy and trendy this is not it. if you are looking to get filled up at a fair price and eating some of the best food ever, here it is. Corned beef on rye is my favorite and I like the potato salad a bit more than the cold slaw but they are both the best. dont forget the pickles. the menu is huge so there is a lot to choose from. if you are traveling, bring a ice chest and take some stuff home. also, dont forget to get some goods from the bakery, it is also the best, but there is no preservatives so eat it quick or refrigerate it. Personally I think their butter cookies are unbeatable. I have been eating here for 50+ years(including the closed Brooklyn Ave location). I live in AZ now and try to go there every trip(I was just there in January) and I always take stuff home to share with friends and family. enjoy the best!

good enough

By jeffrey k |

hugely varied menu. decor is a traditional deli, in itself somewhat an institution just to see it and eat there. staff friendly. parking available in adjacent lot. we have an ongoing debate about just what is the best deli. Canter's certainly has a reputation, and it has been around forever. my pastrami sandwich was good, but not great, at least not compared to one from Katz's in NYC. Served with good pickles and a reasonable slaw. we had two types of strudel, and these were generous and delicious.

Not what I remembered

By tif316 |

I had gone here years ago, and when I went in July 2018 it just wasn't what I had remembered. Food was still good, but my sandwich had a bit of a fridge taste to it. My party enjoyed the food.

Generous Servings, Casual Ambience

By MannyG2000 |

One of the renowned delis in Los Angeles, Canter’s is a regular stop for visitors in search of New York style deli food. The interior decor is modest, but comfortable and far cleaner than some others of this genre. Servings are generous and the food good. In keeping with the expected ambience for this kind of establishment, service is offhand but responsive enough.

Probably would try another deli on next trip to L.A.

By Sue3cats |

Early dinner on a weeknight. Restaurant was 7/8 empty. Sour smell on entry, and it wasn’t pickles. Banquette seat was torn. Our waiter was efficient, friendly, and helpful. The food: Matzoh ball soup - the broth didn’t scream “chicken” but had a pleasant taste and didn’t contain any carrots, celery, or shredded chicken. It was not overly salted. The ball was light and fluffy but didn’t have much taste. (Note - because the ball is so large, they don’t sell a cup of the soup but will gladly split the bowl between two people.) Pastrami sandwich - good, crusty rye bread. The pastrami was not very fatty, had plenty of taste, and there was plenty of it. Cole slaw was not excessively mayonnaise-y. Pickles - awful. Desiccated dill pickle spears. Black and white cookie bought from bakery was good. Convenient, free parking for 1-1/2 hours.

Long-standing LA deli

By Shanelle |

Long-standing deli/restaurant. Came here with my parents in Sunday prior to a show and there wasn’t a wait since it was an awkward time for dinner. There is a Canters specific lot that provides free parking, and you have to get your ticket validated at the end of your meal (which is a stamp). Otherwise street parking is extremely limited. Indoor seating only. Restrooms are available on the second floor. We had an Amex gift card that we used to pay for part of the meal and there was some confusion around that (something to be aware of if you plan to use one). Vegan options are available. If you check in on Yelp, you get free chocolate rugelach. Ours was stale but we appreciated the perk! We got the matzo ball soup to split in addition to the liver. Servings are super hearty so be prepared for leftovers. I had the vegan pastrami melt which came with cheese and sauerkraut. My mom’s pastrami melt was of a similar size and had a softer texture, but the vegan meat was still decent. The fries are thick cut but you also have a choice of coleslaw or potato salad.

Fantastic Deli, Great Food

By michaelkT1957ZO |

I've always wanted to go to Canter's Deli in LA & I finally got the chance. I went with my wife & son for Sunday breakfast & I wasn't disappointed. The place was very crowded, but no one was waiting for a table. Our waitress was Sue & she was absolutely fantastic. Always checking with us to make sure we didn't need anything. I had the Canter's Fairfax (pastrami on rye w/ a side of cole slaw). My son had the Hollywood (club sandwich on rye w/ pastrami & turkey). My wife had the Matzo Ball Soup. My sandwich was excellent. The pastrami was about 2" to 2-1/2" high & it was great. The best pastrami I have had & the rye bread was also very good. My son also enjoyed his sandwich, which was huge. My wife really like her soup, with a huge Matzo Ball, chicken & carrots. Canter's will become my regular "Go To" place when I'm in L.A. I can't wait to go back.

Jewish deliciousness

By lsokanoff |

Hadn't been there in a long time and took my wife there for her first time. We loved it. The place hadn't changed a bit. I got the monster corned beef and pastrami on rye. I was in heaven. Our server was really great. Love the Hollywood history.

Breakfast visit

Returning to this well know deli for breakfast Our waitress was flawless, very efficient, friendly and genuinely seemed to love doing her job She made everyone welcome Atmosphere was great, validated parking , busy with local people We ordered the power sandwich and eggs Benedict - both came with hash browns We left feeling very satisfied and set up for the day

Friendly, fast, and tasty

Make this a must do. Canter’s Deli (Fairfax location) is a favourite breakfast spot when we are in LA. The staff are friendly, the service is fast, the prices are excellent, and the food is tasty. I love the memorabilia on the walls including some great GNR articles and photos. Enjoy!

This place is a part of me

By billk2345678 |

Originally from the east coast, I have been coming here for 40 years 1 to 4 times a year depending on travel requirements. Sometimes I come on my own, as a couple, with my son, sometimes with a group. This time I went for things I never had. It was all yummy, especially the stuffed cabbage. I am glad I finally changed it up from meat sandwiches and lox. Anyway, go. This is your real LA Jewish Deli experience.

I don't understand the appeal

By CorvetteKatie |

Step back to the 1960s for a meal... that's what this place looks like when you walk in. And while cases of delicious desserts greet you, so does a funky smell. Not sure if it is the age of the building or the food. We were with a large group and were limited to ordering a choice of soup and sandwich, which was fine. I had egg salad sandwich and a chicken and rice soup. The food wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't anything I'd want to eat again. Combine that with the old look, yuck smells, tiny bathroom, and not friendly waitress and I just don't know why it is so popular. Next time I'd get a dessert to go.

An oldy but a goody. I LOVE DELI

By davidr |

Old world traditional Kosher Deli; Think Pastrami on Rye, or Matzoh ball Soup, Lox and bagels. Appears to be the same as it was when it opened in 1931 but they boast what they call a 50s style. Very broad menu with it this genre. In the style of New Yorks Katz Deli, Canters cuts their meats thick. I think I prefer mine sliced thinner but this is a style. They make among the best pickles I have ever had and that is saying alot. For me it is a Shlep in terrible traffic to get there at almost any time, but worth the visit. When in that neighborhood, I will stop there again. Our service was very good, especially our server. Our table assistant was not too well trained so in her anxiousness to serve us, our table of 4 had 10 glasses of water before our food arrived. Two sandwiches side by side were obviously different sized because of there in the loaf of bread the slices came from. I got the small slices unfortunately. Nice deli and baked goods display; made me want to buy more after we had lunch.

My favorite deli in LA

If you can get there before 10:30am they have the best breakfast specials in town. Food in always good. Best chicken breakfast sausage in town. Staff is lovely!

Canter's: a classic LA place

By DDD |

Canter's is LA's classic deli. It's like going back in time to the 50's or 60's. Food is fine, service was friendly, and while there may be places that serve fancier dishes, Canter's is exactly what it appears to be. I like it, have for years, and will continue stop in when visiting LA.

A Little Slice of Heaven. Fried, Sunny Side Up, with Potatoes.

By DL390 |

If you enjoy LA history, New York deli-style food, diners, the occasional star-spotting (I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Steve Buscemi – or at least his doppelganger – there on a few occasions) and mid-century modern, then Canter’s Deli on Fairfax Ave is for you. Whenever I’m in LA, it’s a place to which I always return; breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night, anytime, really. If you can’t find something on the menu, and I’ve worked my way through a fair deal of it, then maybe you would be happier in some vegan place I’ve never heard of. There’s no way I can possibly recommend any one thing on the menu because no meal has ever disappointed me although, now I think about it, a special shout-out to the Mac Attack, an ingenious combination of macaroni and cheese, bacon, and cheddar grilled on sourdough. One of these days, I’m determined to try a Chocolate Sundae (cause it’s Canter’s, right, so it’s gotta be spectacular) despite my cholesterol threatening to take the space shuttle if I do. Maybe I’ll just get a little one.

Yessss! New York Jewish food in he heart of Los Angeles!

By pumtek2016 |

I have been eating at Canter's for over 50 years, originally with my Grandfather & Great Aunt. The food is superlative, we recently did a side by side comparison of pastrami from Canter's and Katz's (NYC). It was a draw. I don't live in LA, but Canter's is always my last stop on the way out of town, if not for a meal, then for meats to take home. (I wish they did mail order shipments). The best of the cuisine. Did I mention the pickles on the table? FWIW, Canter's is cheaper than Katz's (another favorite of mine). Of course, I have not been there since Covid shut everything down. Otherwise, I am usually in LA 4-6 times a year. Another bonus is that they have their own parking lot, free of charge with vaidation. A rare commodity in LA!

Terrible

By Michael B |

Been here many times, this time was the worst, I should have known because there was available parking. How can a deli be out of rye bread. Pastrami on sour dough doesn’t work well. The restaurant was dirty, and the pastrami tasted store bought. It’s sad to see this landmark deteriorate, I won’t see any improvement because I won’t be going back. Give me Langers and Brent’s.

Excellent and Historic Jewish Deli - Excellent Pastrami!

By John_Setrak |

On a late night in L.A. when most places were closed I remembered this place was 24 hours and it was a perfect solution as it had been on my list of "must eats" for a while now. Well, it didn't disappoint. I'll start by saying I am from NJ and have had the best in this area - Harold's, Katz's (my favorite), Ben's, 2nd Ave., etc. so I know my pastrami and Jewish deli food. I also am aware that L.A. has pastrami on par with NY so that was nothing new to me. The fact that the Canter brothers were from my home state, the Garden State, MIGHT also factor in some favoritism on my part.... Anyway, the place is wonderfully huge and OLD. Charm and character. Clean and spacious. Wait staff was efficient and friendly. I was there about 11 PM so it was not busy or crowded. I had the Pastrami Reuben, side salad, and side of Greek olives. Everything was magnificent. Also, they have their own free parking lot, a rarity in L.A. - I found parking no problem but it was an off hour on a weeknight in December so I don't know how it is at peak times. There is also street parking all around. I will keep this in mind for late-night eats in L.A. and I can't wait to go back next time I return to L.A. Thanks, Canter's!!! Great food - keep going!!!

No real deli man/woman would prepare or serve the food that was given to me.

By Jordan F |

SERVICE: To start, the staff is great, friendly, and helpful. FOOD Now for the food. I have been eating at Canter's for more than 50 years. ( I worked in a competitor's deli while in college for 3 years, at the front deli counter, cutting meats and making all the deli platters for customers. I ordered a corned beef and cabbage dinner. The cabbage was so overdone and soggy--more like mush--that it was the color brown. The corned beef was thinly cut; actually, it was as if cut by a cheese shredder and piled on top of the brown cabbage. When you tried to stab the corned beef, it fell apart into a soggy pile of mush. No problem sending it back , BUT how could someone who had experience working at a deli serve food this horrible? AMBIANCE: Ceiling tiles a foot above one table fell down from being soaked by a leakage above. A worker slapped a new tile up and walked away with the floor in front of our table full of old tile remnants. Centers needed to redo the entire restaurant. 30 years ago. Today its dirty, old and not sure healthy.

Solid NY Style Deli in LA

I really enjoyed a great business lunch at Canters. It reminded me of the traditional New York City delis/ Good food and good service, I will be back.

What's not to love about this classic :)

By Elaine P |

Canter's has been in business for over 60 years for a good reason - great food, service and home-like atmosphere! Whenever I'm in the area, I try to go here. During this visit, our party of 8 were immediately seated in their biggest booth. Good thing we made reservations, because the restaurant was packed. Everyone loved their food selections, from pastrami to tuna melt, Greek salad, burgers and more. Everyone's food was served at the same time, which I loved. The bakery counter has yummy goodies, too. Of special note are their brownies. They have a parking lot with free parking which is a real bonus in this crowded neighborhood. Don't miss this place!

I’m Home Again

By Charlestonian13 |

As a current Charleston, SC resident who misses a good deli (simply not available here) how wonderful it was to make a recent pilgrimage back to the west coast. After many years in Los Angeles there are a few icons which still fit the bill, and I’m happy to report Canter’s is one of them. Although I saw all my old favorites on the menu; chopped liver, matzah brei, etc., etc. it was lox, eggs and onions with an everything bagel for me. I savored every bite and would not hesitate to recommend. The place is getting older and more worn. But, I guess that is part of its charm. With deli’s disappearing every day, I hope Canter’s sticks around for a long time to come.

Great meat and bakery

Canter's--Best Deli

By elizabethlascheid |

Canter's is back and we are so happy. It had shortened hours for a few years, but now many days are 24 hours. Not all yet, so call if you want to show up at 11:00 pm of after. The bakery is 24 hours. Canter's is a Jewish deli that has been on Fairfax for years. It used to be a Jewish neighborhood and still is, but has a lot of great Indian and Ethiopian food now around. Canter's will always just be the best in deli and fun. They have a small club next-door with live music for a separate fee. I think the tickets are sold on line. The bakery is wonderful. Fresh cookies, breads and all that you would want from a Jewish bakery. The service is great and fast. It is not cheap, but never was. You get that for which you pay. As to the eatery, it is just wonderful. It is old, not remolded and I hope it stays that way. It is always super clean. There are tables and booths, get a booth if you can. All of the food is great. We had a side of mac and cheese with bacon on top. It was great, loaded with cheddar cheese and cooked perfectly. Their pickles, which are free, are the best pickles you will have ever. They are large dill pickles cut in half. A must try. We moved onto eggs, bacon and pancakes. The eggs are not those super small ones that have a strange odor. They are medium and cooked perfectly. The pancakes are so fluffy and yummy. They don't need syrup, but do what makes you happy. The bacon is crisp. There is not one bad sandwich there. They are hugs and I doubt you will be able to finish one, but take home boxes are there for you. Their shakes and sodas are great, they have real Selzer water. The service is so nice. They are kind and happy to help you. They are fast and friendly. Parking is next door in their lot. They validate, but I don't know how much, we are always there when the guy has gone home so free. Go to the Fairfax area. If you are in LA, it is a must see and Canter's is a must stop.

really unexpected poor breakfast

By mlpbjm |

For breakfast out today I chose old school over modern. One of the oldest restaurants in LA open 24 hours. Boy do I regret it. Should have run when I saw the rundown hood and storefront when we parked. Or when we entered and found one other patron in a huge space. The bakery case pops out as you entere and looked very inviting so we asked for a table was told just pick one. Absolutely had to start with a bakery selection and the one they called a HoneyBee (I think) looked great. Basically, a square cinnamon roll with a sugary glaze-no icing-topped with pecans. Served warm, it was the highlight of the meal. Large menu for all the meals and many unique dishes found in Jewish establishments. Though not kosher as bacon, ham, and sausage on menu. Along with non-meat versions. Will say that the fresh squeezed oj was absolutely delicious. They offer a brief list of the breakfast menu items as early specials, maybe 15 items. My choice off the list was the Sunrise Panini-fried egg, bacon?, cheese, and tomato, Served with fruit. LW chose a honey ham steak/slice, egg and potatoes plate. Both these come with beverage included but not the oj. Hmmm. I decided chocolate milk sounded good and it came quick. Clearly milk with some type-Hersheys?-of chocolate syrup added. Light on flavor but went well with the pastry. Things went downhill quickly soon after. My wife had ordered her eggs over hard and they were served completely runny. She will eat them this way but far prefers the other style. Unfortunately, with our next stop being the airport trying to have them redone was problematic. The slice of ham looked nice but had clearly been tossed on a flat top for only a few seconds before serving as it was barely warm. And the english muffin was cold. Ridiculous. Credit for the better than most hash browns. My sandwich arrived looking pretty dismal. Supposedly challah bread but seemed like plain white bread with minimal browning lines, mainly on one side like the press had one side heating better than the other. So little heat applied that the slice of cheese was not even melted! The bacon? quantity was pitiful and the slice of tomato was probably thicker than the rest of the sandwich if you were to place them side by side on a plate. By the time I got to the second half of the sandwich the tomato moisture had made the bottom slice of bread quite soggy. Just very poorly produced. Fruit was fresh and flavorful. Not sure why or how this could happen in a place open so many years, not busy at all, and still be considered a historic LA restaurant worth eating in. Besides trying a pastry with coffee, I say steer far away from Canter's.

It Pains Me To Write This

By NealCassady001 |

I finally made it to the renowned & iconic Canter's for brunch on a Sunday morning. I love going to iconic LA landmarks because I know how few of them there are these days. Which is why it pains me to write this review. Ordered corned beef hash, eggs, hash browns, toast. The corned beef hash was an unappetizing-looking brick that lacked flavor, even with mustard added. The hash browns were burnt in a few spots & undercooked in the rest. Mushy & cold. Eggs were fine. Service was terrific, as our waitress was very friendly & entertaining. We'd met a friend there, so after breakfast, we went into the cocktail lounge for a beer. I decided to use the men's room while at the bar. The cocktail bar men's room was so disgusting (HOW DISGUSTING WAS IT?), I almost heaved up my yummy breakfast. The gender-neutral bathroom also brought me no relief, as it smelled only slightly better than the men's room. Finally made it up to the men's room above the deli & could actually breathe without wanting to vomit. I must admit I have had better dining experiences.

Great Deli Food, Great Service

By Skyros7 |

Our Facebook Group went there for a luncheon and the food was terrific and the staff service was exemplary. Our orders came quickly. I wimped out and had a tuna sandwich but the people that had the pastrami and corned beef said theirs were great. If you are a tourist, you must eat at this place for an example of old time LA. Take time to look at the photos on the wall. The parking lot was full but I grabbed a parking place on the street. A little pricy but worth it. One of our absent members bought a cake and the staff served it to us. I’ve heard people complain about the service, but this was not in evidence. The place is usually crowded but although the line looks long at certain times of the day it moves fast. After you eat, walk around the area as there is lots to see. Before you leave make sure you pick up some goodies at the bakery

Best Pastrami

Not only is Canters open 24/7 they have the absolute best Pastrami sandwich. Canters is one of our go to places while visiting LA.

Iconic LA and a good deli meal or bakery treats

By MooshLA |

Although not legit kosher, this deli really knows how to serve up quality foods. Its one of the best LA locations for celebrity sightings at all hours of the day/night and providing a good meal and service. I always love stopping by their fresh bakery for some wholesome treats only found in Jewish delis such as freshly baked rugalach (yum). Worth a visit and always love supporting one of the few remaining legit Jewish institutions left on Fairfax.

Good but over priced

By Loves-A-Deal-2-Eat |

I've been wanting to go to Canter's for years, but it's an hour drive from where I live, and I knew it was pricey. Wer tried the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on sourdough. They were good, but I've had better in the LA area. The sandwiches are around $14 and come with a tiny side & a doll pickle that wasn't good at all. They charged us for an extra sandwich that we didn't order. We did order asb assortment of cookies. They were mostly flour- tasting with lemon extract. I did like the poppy seed cookie the best. All in all, I was glad I tried Canter's, but I'd rather try another deli next time

Too bad we can’t give zero stars

By Emily C |

Late dinner, restaurant was pretty much empty. You figure you would get incredible service, right? WRONG!! Sat down, waiter never asked if we wanted drinks. Luckily he did bring us waters. My husband ordered soup for us to split and specifically said that. He brought the soup to my husband, and my main at the same time. We had to ask for another bowl. We had our soup, which was good, while my warm entree got to room temperature standing there. Husband’s sandwich came, he asked for spicy mustard, which apparently is an ordeal even though the empty table right beside us had some. It took five minutes to get the mustard. He had to go in the back and returned at his pace. A decent waiter would notice when your waters were half full. But that’s way too much to expect here. Having to have to flag down the waiter and ask for more water, he acknowledged yet still never returned with that water. If the service was poor and the food was fantastic, it may be worth coming here. But alas, the food was meh. Would not recommend.

Love, love Canter’s

By Jennifer S |

Very consistent serving great and awesomely delicious food all these years. The pastrami and corned beef sandwich it’s the bomb. The deli meat just melts in your mouth, matzo ball soup is superb, love the chopped liver, and their shakes, can’t get enough of it! On our way out, gotta have the race track! Thank you Canter’s. See you shortly.

I was attacked and wrongly accused and got hurt as a valued customer...

By Yevgeniy Z |

This happened a while ago, but Amy ejected me from Canter's because I was supposedly a "walkout". But this isn't true because I paid for my meal before I had it. All Amy had to do was check with the cashier and she would've seen that I paid for my food ahead of time. Furthermore, when she accused me of being a thief who walks out on his bills, she didn't cite anything specific or provide any evidence. I mean, what kind of customer service is this? Accusing someone of being a thief without having any kind of solid proof. (That's no way to treat a regular). Furthermore, Canter's has the worst hygiene in the entire community (it is literally the filthiest diner, bar and bakery in LA). In the summer, the main deli is fly-infested and Amy (the manager) never tried to fix this–she simply did not care! And there are fruit flies all over the pastries in the bakery. The bathrooms are often unclean with fruit flies all over the upstairs washout urinal and there is even piss on the floor and poop on the toilet seats that remains uncleaned for days. There are also roaches there from time to time. For this and other reasons, I left this place and never went back. Last of all, if I were a walkout then why would I return?

Delicious bakery

By mariana48 |

Great selection of bakery and pastries. You gotta try most of them. That place is all in one. Restaurant, delicatessen, and bakery. Great location on N Fairfax ave. Down the street from Supreme, Aape, The Hundreds, and many more!

Awful food, experience and customer service

By Skylar05 |

Went for lunch after seeing such wonderful reviews. I had a corned beef sandwich which was awful. The meat was thick, fatty, tough and not a great flavor. I told the waitress who brought another one which had less fat but still was very tough. I tried to eat it and later mentioned it to the waitress who said sorry. I told the manager about my experience as we were on our way out who merely said and that she would mention it. Really? After spending $16 on a sandwich which I told her was very disappointing you think I would get more than I'm sorry! I'm sorry we came there to eat and had bad food and worse service!

Best Deli Sandwich in LA!

By Sacnative |

Best Deli Sandwich in LA! We just stopped by after seeing the cool pics of this deli on Instagram I knew it was a deli that has been famous for a long time for LA peeps. The place is old School and we loved the look. The booths are comfy and private. The sandwiches were made fast and brought out quickly. The turkey sandwich was the bomb. So delicious. Really high quality meat. The fries were also amazing. Very nice and friendly wait staff. We just loved our lunch. Also there is a small parking lot for Canters and they validate parking so yay! Winner all around and I loved it!

Canter's is awful.

By GES |

Canter's is awful. On Christmas Day I placed an order at around 4pm through Postmates for delivery 6-6:30pm. The order included lots of chicken soup for a sick family member, a roast chicken, and a gluten free patty melt for a child that suffers from celiac disease (not lifestyle). At around 6:30pm Canter's called to say it couldn't do the patty melt and refused to do the rest of the order thereby canceling. I called back and Canter's would not fix it. If Canter's had called anytime sooner there would have been time to fix but since it's Christmas Canter's untimely notice and complete lack of professionalism meant no food for the sick family member or anyone else. Canter's should be ashamed of itself and others should know. I've been a loyal customer of Canter's since the 1980s. I am posting one of the first ever bad reviews to any vendor. Usually I just let failures slide without writing about it. I can't ignore something this heartless on Christmas.

An LA Staple

By SUBZEROSKIDD10 |

Canter’s Deli is an LA staple that’s been around nearly 100 years. I visited with a friend who told me it was essential that I see it on a trip to the city. We didn’t sit down for a full on meal but we did gaze at the seemingly endless options of sweet treats and pastries in their deli cases. The folks working behind the counter weren’t afraid to offer a samples as we tried to make up our minds. With so many delicious choices, it was a difficult decision. Next time I would sit down and try one of their famous corned beef or pastrami reuben sandwiches. Whether you are a Los Angeles native or visiting from out of town, Canter’s is a place you need to put on your list.

Famous Deli somewhat disappointing

By Jeannie D |

This was my second time going to this deli and it was disappointing. The service was horrible, and the waitress was inefficient, brought out our dinners at different times and made multiple mistakes in the order. The BBQ chicken was good, but the potato pancakes were dry and tasteless. The dinner deal for the senior was decent.

Maybe the best deli remaining in America

By Ambassador779473 |

The four stars have nothing to do with service or food, but after all, this is a Jewish style delicatessen, not a luxury restaurant. Now that the Stage and Carnegie delis in NYC have closed, Wolfies and Rascal House in Miami Beach have closed, there's really only Canter's in W. LA and Katz's in lower Manhattan remaining of these old fashioned corned beef and pastrami eateries. The portions are enormous. The quality is very high. The service is friendly and prompt. Though the neighborhood isn't what it once was, it has parking available which makes it easier. Great soups, great desserts as well

Good place to go after Museum Row

By JDinLA |

I've gone here, off and on, for decades. While the food is good, it's not what it used to be. Staff is nice but not that helpful. The bakery is very good. Validated parking good for 90 minutes.

Canter's Deli Should be Avoided

By Genie D |

Do not go here. My son became violently ill from what he believes is chemical poisoning. Having worked in the food industry, he believes it was sodium chloride poisoning. The restaurant is unresponsive. Reported to the Board of Health.

Better breakfasts available

By Tim B |

Canter’s has lost its mojo for sure. Tired service and the food was barely edible. Fruit smelled of chlorine and the muffins for eggs Benedict were cold and raw, smothered in catering hollandaise.

An LA classic

By dwg51357 |

One of our favorite places to eat when we’re in the area. Love the old-school deli food, atmosphere and servers. We’ve eaten at Jewish delis from New York City to San Diego, and I have to say Canters’ pastrami rueben tops even Katz’s in Manhattan. And make sure to leave room for a take-home treat from the bakery; the chocolate rugelachs are amazing!

You can't go wrong

By Richard S |

Hadn't been to this place in many years and enjoyed going back here again. Open 24 / 7, and still looks the same as my first visit to this place some forty-seven years ago. Still has the very extensive menu to choose from, there's just gotta be something for everyone. We both ended ordering the same thing for breakfast, the corned beef hash, has brown potatoes and there of the most perfectly cooked over easy eggs I ever had. The yolk was everywhere and plenty to soak up with the rye toast, corned beef has and hash browns. Definitely enjoyed this meal, makes me want to go back much more often. To top it off, the cost was only $12.50, definitely a real bargain!!!!

A staple when visiting Hollywood!

By Kerry W |

Dont hesitate to make this a place to stop and eat! I felt like I was back in 1960s walking in this quaint old diner. And dont forget to stop and pick up some pastries on the way out.

Canter's Deli

By cc connections |

I was in L.A. in December, 2023 and I didn't make it to Canter's this time. I always go to Canter's but just couldn't make it this time. Love this restaurant and always enjoy the food.

Best Deli in the land.

By Theresa T |

Canter's is a legend in Hollywood. In the 60's we all went every night after everything else closed down. Best burgers. Best sandwiches. Best people watching. Went back after more than 50 years. It hadn't changed. If you're in Hollywood..ya gotta go to Canter's!

FOOD IS NOT KOSHER

By NourHos |

Be aware that the food is not kosher despite of what is mentioned on Trip Advisor. It was confirmed by the staff who kindly informed us before we made a purchase.

It's legendary for a reason.

By dalessiopietro |

Everything was perfect at this classic Los Angeles institution. The service was friendly and attentive. The large sandwiches delivered a taste explosion with every bite. The coffee was hot. The beer was cold. The sides were fresh. I hadn't been here in years/ Having a meal with a friend here was like putting on my favorite sweater. Time stopped and everything was relaxing and I left with a warm happy feeling.

Still Good Jewish Food

By Jeff G |

I have fond memories of Canters and of it's Jewish neighborhood from back when I used to visit my brother who lived in LA for years. The neighborhood has lost a lot of it's Jewish stores and in fact, many storefronts are closed. It's definitely in a transitional periosd. But Canters chugs on. The menu still has all the Jewis classics, like corned beef, matzo ball soup, brisket and massive sandwiches. Two tap my deep Jewish soul food roots I ordered the roast tongue. It comes with a variety of sides including potatoe latkes and I opted for the pickled herring. The tongue is covered with a tasty onion sauce. The tongue was well cooked as were the latkes. My wife had the stuffed cabbage which is more sweet than I usually like; not as good as my nana's. It's still the same great people watching location; hipsters, oldsters, confused tourists. Well worth the visit.

Great Deli Experience

By shirley0415 |

Great food. They made the sandwiches just the way we ordered them. They substituted gluten free bread on one of them, and everyone else still got the right type of bread -- this is not always true at places we have gone. Excellent turkey. Love the potato salad. Lox and bagel a strong choice. Better deli than in NYC!

A NY style dinner in LA

By Ahmed K |

This is quintessential NY style dinner in the heart of LA. They offer wide selection of breakfast and brunch foods but their desserts are just too good to miss.

Excellent choice

By TX_Traveler_2014 |

In the past we've gone to Canter's for the bakery. With the closure of Jerry's famous deli (our go-to place when in town) we decided to give Canter's a try. That was a good choice, the server made sure the cooks got each of our orders just the way we wanted. Good COVID measures in place - we were separated from other patrons, there are plexi-glass shields separating the booths (i.e., next to each other), and all the staff wore masks. We'll definitely be returning.

Local History

By KRO |

The old school style, known for their corned beef and pastrami which we had! They have all day breakfast which was a plus too. Cute and tasty local eatery, lots of history here

Owner family of Canter's Deli forgot their own restaurant

By EDDY W |

Canter's Deli was one of the most Jewish or Eastern European deli type food restaurants in all of Los Angeles. Located at 419 North Fairfax near West Hollywood for years it was the preferred location of this great community that is there I was disappointed with the service the abandonment of the dirty place the lack of attention of the waiters now almost all Latinos who do not know about European cuisine The food is still good but not excellent It seems that the family left the place and that it is no longer they or the one who cares for it and who supervises it rather the workers do it some manager who believes that by saving he will earn more instead of trying to have better service and sell with pleasure and with a smile They are so comfortable that they do not even share the internet saying that there is not when there is Value for your money, does not apply here I was very excited to return, I was saddened by the tremendously dirty bathrooms, few sanitation measures, little kindness Pedi pickled herring Well prepared But a very small portion for $ 12 The Reuben of pastrami, it was well prepared The fries were not of good quality The adhesion, unfortunately a mixture of ketchup with mayonnaise. D bottle, not prepared at home NATHAN ALL is still better, just a few miles away

Classic place

By Savcat |

Had been wanting to visit Canters for a while and it was a good visit. The staff were efficient, however our guy didn't stay around long enough for us to finish a sentence! He was pleasant though and got the order correct. Loved the retro décor and the ceiling was amazing. Lots of choice on the menu and big portions. Parking can be validated by the restaurant, free for 90 minutes. Bakery also on premises. Would like to return.

Old style deli, good food!

By Rachel Evans |

If you are a fan of Guns and Roses, this deli is a must see. There is some memorabilia on the wall and signed copies of a book about GNR for sale. I believe the owners son knows members of the band. We had lunch here and the food was all really good! I loved the corned beef sandwich…mmm. My daughter enjoyed her grilled cheese, on gluten free bread. If you enjoy old style deli dining, this one is great!

Fantastic place, earns all the plaudits. Absolute must-go

By TruebritSingapore |

What great place. Originally saw it (don't laugh) on MDL Los Angeles when the 2 x Josh's negotiated a deal, and as a fan of history and Jewish delis after 10 years in NYC, I had to try it with my daughter. it was outstanding, and a special shout-out to David, our waiter that day and also when we returned. First time out we both lox, onions, and egg scramble with hash browns..delicious. Second time my daughter had the egg whites, spinach and tomato pressed sandwich, I had a standard eggs and bacon. Do NOT miss the chocolate milkshakes or the amazing chocolate egg cream. Cannot recommend enough...great food, lovely people...lots of history.

Traditional Jewish deli. Wonderful cheesecake.

By Waterloonie |

We stopped in for cheesecake and coffee. Just wonderful. Service is friendly and enthusiastic. I recommend you pick up some Jewish pastries etc to take home. Just go!

Always grouse!

I love canters Everytime I come to Canters I am equally as impressed. For me it's easy the corned beef and pastrami sandwich. Stacked high, bread is awesome and I love the feel of stepping back in time.

A deli doesn’t get much better than this

By TAMAN1951 |

Definitely a classic old school environment. The bean and barley soup is chocked full of flavor and a perfect starter. The pastrami is great snd plentiful. Wow the potato salad is a meal unto itself. The stuffed cabbage took my wife back to her childhood and her mother’s cooking. Very attentive service. Good prices.

Great Deli in Los Angeles

By kuldip s |

A great New York style Deli In West Hollywood. Sandwiches were great. Humungas size with great Milk shake. American style cream cheese was out of this world. Must visit to this iconic institution.

If You Like to Eat Local, This Place is for You

By ASBCRB |

This is a deli that has been around for nearly 100 years! That says something in this day and age! They have a bakery and they also offer table service to eat while you’re there. The food was not only delicious but plentiful! We love to eat local and experience the local culture, so this was perfect for us. Who doesn’t enjoy freshly baked breads or homemade pickles! This deli is the real thing. When you sit to eat, you feel like it’s a local staple and has been around for a while. The staff is friendly and the service was fast and excellent!

What A Treat

By 88AVANTI |

I guess finding a real Jewish deli in a town largely inspired by jewish movie magnets shouldn't have been a surprise, but for this New Yorker it was like coming upon an oasis in the desert. And, boy. what an oasis this sprawling place with it's huge menu filled with classic deli meat and vegetarian options. You want chopped liver or kasha or matzoh ball soup or potato latkes or pastrami or corned beef they got it. And it's really good, not at all expensive by L.A. standards, especially for such large portions. I became an instant fan and you will to. It's only a couple of blocks from the must see La Brea Tar Pits, which makes it a perfect lunch spot before or after.

Does not live up to the hype

By CM M |

I was looking forward to eating at Canter's, especially since there are no delis where we live; however, this did not live up to my expectations. I had the matzo ball soup which was ok but nothing special. Then I had their corned beef on rye. It was decent but not something I wanted to come back for. Literally the next day I went back to Wexler's to compare and found Wexler's to be superior in every way - their corned beef, rye bread, potato salad and even their pickles. Guess I'll have to stick to Wexler's the next time I'm in LA.

Nostalgic, ok food

By dolittledigger |

My husband wanted to stop here for the history of the deli. Traditional deli like decor inside. Pretty pricey for sandwiches. I found mine just to be a simple tasting sandwich. I did the turkey sandwich and potato salad. My husband opted for the miso ball soup, couldn't even finish it. They brought extra of their homemade pickles. Parking available on site with receipt if you go at off time. We did have to step over a homeless guy out front.

The greatest Everything Bagels with a schmear of music

By Woman_on_a_mission20 |

What a night! This was an unexpected big night in LA where the beers were cheap, the vibes practically tangible and the reubens just a side step away from the bar. Somehow we had the presence of mind (after watching a great band and imbibing seemingly all of the beer in stock) to purchase a 4 pack of everything bagels and I have never congratulated my past self more. This is a must do if you dig on music, great deli and a location that caters for a late 20's to 30's crowd (sans kids) who want to have fun when they travel.

Oy! What more could you want?

By SecretSharer83 |

Delivery. Two Fresser sandwiches, which include potato salad and cole slaw, plus a potato knish. Good like the good old days. Like you remember. The real thing. Consistent with last time. Will do it again soon.
