I am sorry to say that my experience here was not so pleasant. I called the next day to express my disenchantment but was made to feel as though it might be my imagination or something We ate there on a Monday, I'm in the hospitality industry and truly believe that they were just trying to sell something that should have been discarded long before. I did not want to make a scene or draw attention to my table in front of my elderly mother so I waited until we parted way to alert them to the problem, which fell on deaf ears.

Obviously frequented by regulars. Great atmosphere--comfortably run down. Sat at the bar. Wife and I enjoyed a bottle of wine and tried a number of things from the regular menu (also a bar menu). Service was very good, dishes served timely and a very positive experience overall.

Amazing restaurant, next to an impressive fish market. I discovered it looking for the freshest seafood market in Miami. Then I came back for the restaurant. Amazing! Fine fried calamari, perfect crab stuffed mushrooms, excellent scallop ceviche. And the best: catch of the day fish in any way. We tried blackened yellowtail; marvelous. We drank Key West beer, but I visited one of the nicest and unexpected restaurant cellars in Miami. Two more very important issues: kindest service, with a lady saying always yes to all, and promptly bringing different sauces and all we asked. Last, but not least: price. The cheapest fresh fish restaurant in Miami (don't tell this to the owner, please). My wife and my daughters also loved they are very family friendly. Next time, I'll try their steaks.

I am a landlubber and had a wonderful strip steak, perfectly cooked medium which is not easy to do! My husband loves seafood and loved his blue point oysters and surf and turf. Good warm bread and good coffee. Hint to any restaurant: You can get away with a lot if you serve good warm bread and good coffee! The service was very pleasant and efficient. All in all a very good dining experience.

Captain’s tavern has great seafood, but many options are battered or dusted with flour and I am celiac. I have an acute allergy to wheat. It makes me truly ill for several days. Our waiter “got it.” On top of that, he checked everything out with the chef. I had a fabulous steak dinner with Cole slaw and baked potato that left me feeling marvelous.

Was seriously disappointed in quality of food served. 9 people in our group and NO ONE was satisfied with served food. Service was Ok. Have been going to Captian's for years and was really disappointed in the decrease in food quality. Don't think I will be going back anytime soon for food.

What seems like a very popular restaurant. The service we quick and efficient - lots of choice and variety from sushi to steak. Over a great meal although no particular dish stood out was just what we needed

When did this become south beach? The prices have skyrocketed at Captains Tavern and the fish look like guppies. It still tastes fresh but for the money you can get ambiance and creativity at better seafood resturants.

Father day 2021 made me walk in with after countless yrs of eatting they made wear a mask to enter the restaurant not having one I had to go bad into my truck to make one up.. so I can't walk in 25ft to join my party of 11 to take it off.. I was so upset I lost my appetite.. I will not be returning to this place I hope they enjoy the business I gave them during the last 12 yrs.

Went here on a business dinner. The appetizer lobster cocktail was fresh and sweet and the lobster bisque was very good. For dinner we ordered the Admirals platter where the lobster was tender and the scallops and stuffed shrimp were excellent. For dessert the key lime pie was not too tangy and a nice graham crust.

Great service, they run a tight ship. Fresh seafood and great steaks too! Not a fancy place, great bar and all around family ambiance.

Went there with my wife and her aunt on her recommendation. This is what a seafood restaurant looked like in the 70's and as far as I could tell not much has changed. Went on a Sunday afternoon and the place filled up quickly. We had a drink in the bar, the bartender is very knowledgeable, we made our way to the table and were promptly delivered bread, butter and water. The menu is larger than I woluld have expected. Fresh fish is their specialty. Order anything off the menu and you will be happy. Make your way to the University and head south on Dixie Highway to find this old school seafood restaurant.

Great restaurant! We always pick a seafood restaurant when away on business and this was the winner. And I do mean winner. Great selection, great service. I would highly recommend it when you are in the area. Worthy of additional visits!

This was my first visit to the seafood market, I went on Valentine’s Day at about 2 PM to get 2 pounds of stone crabs and a crabcake as I had called them and discovered that they had much lower prices on stone crabs than anyone else in the area. Parking was tough, this place is obviously very popular! The line was extremely long and took about 30 minutes to get through it! But the service and the quality of the seafood was well worth waiting for. I can’t wait to go back and try more of their products!

We stopped here at the suggestion of a friend during a very long layover at the Miami airport. My niece had the 2 pound lobster, I had the sea bass and my mother had scallops and shrimp in a sauce. Each dish was very good. I intend to make another trip back there as the food was very good. The hot rolls and butter are superb. I ate five. I do not need to eat five rolls. They were too good. The only reason that I am not giving this restaurant a five is they must have all brands of artificial sweetener. They need to have the blue, the pink and the yellow. They gave us a general bowl of limes and lemons and I would have loved to have had a glass of ice tea but I need sweet n low in my iced tea. The server was very responsive. I was completely unimpressed with the sides and how there are no substitutions on the entrees. I cannot tolerate a lot of carbs so not being able to substitute the carbs out with another vegetable forced us to order a vegetable and the rice was just left on the table. I hate to waste food. I do plan to return. I will bring my own sweetener and I will also just ask them to skip the carb side since the fish is the real attraction. In fact I may stay a weekend so I can eat there three times. Oh heck, this place does deserve a 5. We really liked that the butter served with the rolls was soft.

Visited Captains Table with friends, one of whom lives nearby. We all thought our meals were terrific and made even better with pleasant and prompt service.

First of all it was my birthday and I got to pick my all time favorite. So the five of us went. My son noticed black things in his water glass. Myhusband noticed it was fish scales and sent it back. The next one had the same thing. We called the mng over and tld her thatneither the dishwasher needs to be changed or the water dispenser... I ordered the Thai Lobster Salad . . The lobster tasted like bleach. Ugh! My husband got a seafood pasta that was tasteless and gummy like overlooked pasta. One son had salmon which was great and one had lobster and he was happy. We won't go back .

Alright, I hate to pay a lot for lunch, especially since I typically eat half of my meal. But, I was heading to my studio at Deering Estate and before that had to deliver art work for an exhibition. So if you live in Miami, you know you need to beat the traffic which means your eating a Kashi Bar in your car to miss the fast food venues. I've seen this restaurant before, the side part of the restaurant is off of 98th St, but if you park there your arrive at their seafood market. The main restaurant is on Dixie Highway, kind of a strip mall. It's easier to park where the market is and walk around the building to the restaurant. Okay, so when you enter, it's like a bar with T.V's and then a restaurant area where you might take your elderly relatives. I opt for the bar area because I had a time constraint. I had 3 choices on the menu that at wanted, the special scallop dish, the shrimp boy or the Blackened Grouper Reuben Sandwich. Without hesitation the waitress said, go for the grouper. It was a meal for 2. I'm used to being in NY and if I have a meal to big for me I know I can give half of it to a homeless person, but this part of Miami is homeless free.. I did take half of the sandwich for my brother. Back to the sandwich, It was the freshest Grouper sandwich that I've had since Key West. You will simply love this restaurant, it's so eclectic and suites a variety of tastes. My only regrets is that I was eating alone and couldn't share an appetizer, meal and desert. That seems like that would be the perfect combo.

We went with family and friends, it is a nice place, the food is also good, however the service is slow, I will come back again

Have been coming here for years , it can be a blue haired crowd, but the food has always been on par. They have a very extensive wine menu, but typically their house wines are great. Service has always been outstanding.

I am rating the restaurant here, not the store. Had some of my best oyster courses ever, including the "Russian oysters", which were just superb and unforgettable. I must say that it is not a cheap place, but you're paying for top quality and top freshness.

This restaurant is only a few minutes away from my house. I didn't know about it until my real estate agent invited us there to celebrate a milestone. Since then, we have been going back on a regular basis. So far, we have not been disappointed although the service was not as good the last time (few new waiters I was there with my wife and my daughter on Thursday evening. Don't expect fancy furniture but top quality seafood and 1 of the best bread pudding in Florida. Because they don't invest in fancy furniture, they manage to keep the prices fairly reasonable. For people living in Pinecrest and Coral Gables, this is an "institution".

Went in fairly late and was seated quickly but the pleasurable experience stopped there. No Ranch dressing and the creamy garlic was brutal in the about of garlic. I ordered the crab stuffed Dolphin and the crab meat was actually "Seafest Crab meat" was is fake crab meat. I asked to see a manager and the waited just laughed and walked away.

GO for the basic seafood, broiled fish. Very nicely cooked, healthy portion, good taste. Not a gourmet's delight but solid meal. Will go again when I am in the area.

Anytime we are in Miami we always make one stop here. This restaurant has not advertised in 40 years. They keep a blackboard list of specials from the freshly arrived assortment. I chose the lobster special, I couldn't finish, my husband had the grouper, my family chose the whole snapper with a chili like sauce and the blackened tuna! The group enjoyed a bottle of wine and we called the evening a wonderful success. Oh, for seafood choices like this at least once a week!

We needed to shop for seafood for a family meal and stopped in to see what was available at the market. While we were looking at and selecting fresh fish we "tested" 5 or 6 varieties of raw oysters and enjoyed every bite. The market had both Maine and Florida lobsters, fresh and frozen, as well a nice selection of fresh local fish. Bought a lot and enjoyed it later at our family dinner.

A fixture in the Kendall Pinecrest area for almost 40 years. A favorite of locals that demand fresh seafood and reasonably priced wines. Their Tuesday night twin lobster special draws big crowds and long lines (no reservations). Preparations run the gamut from standard broiled fish to imaginative such as Macedamian encrusted snapper. Save room for the key lime pie.

Looking for the best SEA FOOD EVER? This is the place. Every day they offer the best seafood and the freshest. Lobsters on Thursday at prices you will not believe.Service is EXCELLENT!! Very comfortable. Lots of mature couples but you will always see young couples who appreciate the value of the place. Very nice Bar. The restaurant is beautiful.

Being a resident of Phoenix, AZ, i don't get good seafood often. In Miami for business, I asked the hotel front desk for a good place for seafood. After being told a number of chains, I asked for where she would go. I was pointed at the Captain's Tavern...hard to find, but good food. And it was! After finding the place, and seeing the 1-hour line of locals waiting to get in at 8PM, I figured something special was up. It was...I had the conch chowder (great) and a broiled seafood assortment (really great!) that made my night. I enjoyed it so much I returned the next day for lunch...not as busy, limited and cheaper menu, still very good. Next time I am in Miami, this place will be on my radar!

Great food, Good friendly waiters and bar tenders. Good atmosphere and easy parking. Been going there for 40 years and never had a bad meal or bad experience. If you are new to Miami, go to this place and you will no longer be a stranger!

One of Miami s iconic places to get a wide variety of fish dishes prepared almost any way you like. It is always crowded and be prepared if you go early to be surrounded by folks with gray hair. But they know good food at a great value. I had the dijon snapper and it was delicious, moist and flavorful. A great neighborhood place.

Expected more variety after a long haul to this place from the airport area. 2 stars only as I left a bit disappointed. No food to eat on the spot as advertised. Skip it.

This restaurant is awesome! I have been there twice now, and as a new resident of Miami, I can say this has been the best place we have been to. The food is great! They are always packed, so others must agree. They have great specials during the week and excellent lobster. I would definitely recommend going there with your family, friends, or a romantic date.

Went to the Captains Tavern for "lobster night." The lobsters arrived ice cold. We complained so they took them back and reheated them to the consistency of mush. Then when we complained again we were told they were not going to replace the lobsters with fresh ones, but we could order something else off of the menu. We have been coming here for years for lunches and dinners, but after this experience will not be back. No effort at all to make things right. Just rudeness and an attitude of "take or leave it." We will "leave it."

The place is nothing special, and the food is just OK, but we had gone to Captain's Tavern twice just for convenience. They have a nice fish market just at the back of the restaurant, which I have gone to buy fresh sea food. Two weeks ago, we made our first try to go on a tuesday night for 2 X1 Main Lobster. I have to tell you that even the ambiance is from people 60 and over or family reunions, we thought it was a pretty good deal. The Lobsters were super fresh, and even that the place was packed, the service was astonishingly good. Two big lobsters for 30dlls. We ordered 3 and took one home, because you have to pay extra for sharing, so next day I made Lobster tacos and they were yumi!!!

My family mostly eats seafood so I buy seafood almost daily. The seafood is fresh and the service is excellent. The staff is always friendly and has great suggestions on how to prepare some of the fish. Their seafood dip is always a hit with my guests.

I heard about this place from a friend. So I decided to come in. Fair priced and the food is acceptable. Didn't wow me. I understand these places are rustic but this is too dated. I felt like I was in a 70s time warp

If you go to Miami, you cannot miss this place in South Dixie Highway (US1). We went there on a tuesday and they had the Maine lobster special. It included two steamed one pound lobsters with salad and a baked potatoe for $30. To start we shared fresh clams on the half shell. They have great stone crabs in season too. Nice wine land beer list too.

Captain's Tavern serves the most consistent fresh and best fish in the area. If you read a review that says otherwise, either that person had a bad night or doesn't like fish. If you ever are served a bad meal, tell the server and they will fix it, pronto. But it has never happened to me. They serve a huge variety of fish, prepared in any fashion you want, and accompanied by a large variety of sauces and toppings. Tuesday night 2 for 1 lobster is a killer. And with all the sides that come with dinner (salad, side, potato, bread) you will never go hungry!

Their offerings always depend on what the fishermen caught that day. They do have special steak and lobster nights but the big draw is their fresh fish. They do not advertise but the place is usually packed, even mid week. We have never been disappointed and we usually eat here when in town. The place is just 1960's in style but the food is great. Just don't expect to dress up or expect that fellow diners will.

I just read a review of someone who said they had a bad meal there - on their birthday. Hard to understand as I've been a local for 20+ years, been eating here forever and really, unless you are eating the napkin, everything else here is really good. The fish is caught daily (Captain Ray Rosher goes there - he wouldn't bother if it wasn't good as he knows fresh fish), the conch chowder is the best around, the yellowtail encrusted macadamia nut is just amazing and my wife always orders the yellowtail a la paulo and it tastes great. Their oysters Rockefeller is probably the best I've ever had and their extensive wine list is maybe the best deal in Miami. Wait staff is usually moving fast and they do a fine job. I've never had a bad meal there. They have lobster specials during the week - come early and plan to wait - but the wait will be worth it. There are some people you can't please but for 99% of the world, this place will be the best seafood in town.

I think some people may confuse the restaurant with the market. Or I am the one confusing the marker with the restaurant :) In any case I have not tried the restaurant but bought seafood from the market. I found the stuff fresh and the staff very friendly and helpful. They have a faily good selection of fresh fish, oysters, clams, shrimp and other seafood for the area. This is not the La Boqueria in Barcelona or the like obviously but one can get pretty decent seafood here.

We have visited Captain Tavern many times over the years and the high quality & freshness of their food has never wavered. Here you will fined the freshest fish, lobster, oysters & stone crab. The soft shell crab is a must, perfectly cooked & presented. I cannot comment on the meat , always have the seafood. The premises are hidden away slightly off US1 opposite the Dadeland Marriott but this is a must visit if you are in the area- a restaurant always bustling with energy with very efficient & friendly service.

Captains Tavern was our favorite place to eat for special occasions. We were very disappointed with the drinks, food and service. The Grey Goose martini was very weak, both myself and my husband ordered the Colossal Lobster tails but they were small, undercooked and expensive at $41 a pound(for the value). My sister in law wanted the whole snapper that you were out even though it was 5:30pm She settled for the filet of snapper that was thin and small. We asked about if there was bread and was told we had to ask for it. Our overall experience was a big letdown.

All of the fish are selected by the owner himself, an 84 year old man who enjoys picking out the freshest and best fish right off of the boat every morning. It also offers the only "Super Collosal" sized native stone crabs in Florida @ 3/4 to one pound each!

great quality and great prices, nice conch, stone crabs, and amazing fresh fish. Mustard sauce is pretty good too.

The fish is mostly locally caught and always fresh. You can have them fillet it for you. Try the sauces they have for sale as well.

Went here for lunch on the recommendation of a friend from Miami. She had pecan crusted fish which was OK but a little on the greasy side. I had the crab cakes. They were all breading and very little crab. My friend ordered an extra side salad and was charged $5 for a few leaves of lettuce. She said that the standards had dropped and would not be returning. There are many other options that offer better tasting food at a lower price.

Great place to buy fresh seafood. When stone crabs are in season we go to the Captain to buy them. Always the freshest seafood. They have many selections of fresh seafood to choose from. Along with their restaurant, this place is one of a kind and always busy.

The lace to have fresh seafood well prepared and at reasonable prices and a wonderful wine list at rock Bottom prices,go there on Tuesday and be ready to wait a while but worth it for the. Lobster special , every pinecrest old timer shows up for this one. The baris a good alternative if you don't want to wait too long The interior needs a little updating No reservations accepted unless more than 6 people in the group

We had lunch here. My son enjoyed the salmon. I liked the conch salad appetizer and the crab salad entree. This restaurant is great for kids as there are quite a lot of fish tanks. The prices are good for lunch and I thought the service was excellent. There was no wait for lunch (at 1pm on a Saturday).

They have fresh seafood and great service. The oyster selection is excellent and are can be prepared on the half shell.

I have been living in Miami (South Dade) for nearly four decades. The Captain's Tavern has always been one of my favorite eating establishment for seafood and its' quality of food. It has been about six months since my last visit and boy what a downhill turn this place has taken. I was so disappointed with the whole experience left me and my wife swearing never to set foot in this place again. To start off, the parking situation was intolerable. It took me nearly ten minutes to find a place. As we were seated, I noticed the place was rather busy and a lot of activity all around. Usually, that is a good sign but not today. This was a harbinger of things to come. It took the waitress nearly 10 minutes to attend to us and submit our drink order, another five to get the drinks. We places an order for appetizers and again, you guess it, an unacceptable delay. I can tolerate this as I knew the place was somewhat busy but It has never here before. As we settled down and started to order our main course, I was surprised that they had run out of most of the fish on the menu. It came down to maybe a selection of three of four seafood plates. To add insult to injury, they had run out of baked potatoes and most of the side dishes. All in all, our selection was very limited and we had to be satisfied with what ever the had left. When our meals arrived, the servings were a child's portion. I questioned the waitress and she nonchalantly said that this the normal serving for the dishes we ordered. Even the appetizers were skimpy! Whenever I order a fish plate, I at least get an entire fillet! Not here, I was lucky to get what appeared to a third of a fillet. The side order was less than half a cup of rice. This was not the restaurant I had known and grew up with. The final "nail in the coffin" was when we received our check. It turned out to be over $140.00 for this minimalist meal. We left hungry and disappointed. Frustrated because our waitress did not really care about the service she provided. It was your typical "if you don't like it, too bad!" attitude. If your hungry forget this place. You will not get your money's worth. I dine out to have a good and enjoyable meal and experience. The Captain's Tavern is now a ship wreck. It has run its' course and it no longer is a great place to dine.

This restaurant was very good, clean, and offered fresh seafood....But to find this gem we drove up and down the main road 4 times before we found it in the dark. Don't be dissuaded by the exterior its a true gem on the interior.

Fresh seafood, varied menu, good specials, reasonable wine prices. That's the reason the place is always packed. Seafood market behind the restaurant is worth visiting, if you're a local.
An Exemplary First-Quality Seafood Market
Freshest seafood, clean premises and excellent service are the principal reasons to buy your seafood here if you want the best available.
