Delicious

This was my first experience with Carson’s and was glad I came here for dinner. I was greeted immediately upon entering and sat immediately in a booth near the bar area. I was tended to promptly by the wait staff and had a great meal. I went with the filet and was glad I did. All of my food came out promptly and the temperature/flavor was great. As a bonus there was some live music that was great and a nice way to wind down my evening. Thank you.

Same good food in a new location

By John D |

This is a big restaurant. I had chicken and ribs combo (of course) and Sue had the garbage salad with 10 oz of NY strip on it. We washed it down with a bottle of Milbrandt Merlot. We were very happy with the new location just across LSD from Navy Pier. $127 including a 20% tip

great variety of great food

By JC-n2-Cl |

The food I ordered was carry-out but I did have a conversation with the person taking my order and did notice the waiters and waitresses . I didn't have time to stay for a sit down dinner but know I will in the future . Everything I saw and heard what the patrons said was very pleasing to me .

Awesome Food, Superb Service

By Clint G |

We love Chicago because Carson serves the best BBQ and margaritas. Located near River Walk and many hotels. We could easily stumble back without notice

Great steak great service

By Jen |

The food was wonderful and the service was impeccable also. I had the filet it was a high quality cut with great flavor. We came in street clothes and soaked to the skin from a rain, snow, sleet mix and everyone treated us like it was no big deal. Would definitely recommend.

TOP RIBS

By Sigallo85 |

The best ribs I've ever had in my life, especially because they are not "off the bone" as they like to specify on the menu, which makes the meat tender but not too fluffy as you can find in many Southern Style BBQ. The place is cozy, the service is great and the prices are fair for the quality of meat they offer.

It'd been a while, but we're glad we went back

By MikeGPortland |

Growing up in Chicago meant going to Carson's for ribs. My wife and I both went as youngsters to several different locations but, after moving out of state, it became just a memory. My wife is the rib lover - I'm not a meat-eater any more and remember that the only non-meat option on the menu back then was a plate of perch, which was perfectly fine but made you feel very left-out during family outings. We moved back to the area a few years ago and found several good local rib options but when we found ourselves staying downtown on a "staycation" and noted that Carson's was within walking distance to our hotel, we knew we'd have to give it a try and, I have to say, it was a very good experience overall. Going in on a Sunday afternoon, the management did a nice job making us leery of indoor dining people feel that they were doing the right thing - we found a booth near the bar that was separated by booths that were purposely left unoccupied. The staff was all masked and the menus were on smartphones, so it was easy to see what was available and order from there. Our server was also the bartender and while he was very busy, he was very friendly and made us feel right at home. My wife ordered a beer and I tried a martini made with a local gin (very good) and she went ahead to order the "BBQ In-Laws" (a combo plate with ribs and brisket, with sautéed mushrooms and cole slaw on the side) while I ordered a BBQ salmon sandwich, which came with the same slaw and roasted Greek potatoes. Our drinks arrived and we watched some football on TV while we waited (not too long) for our food. Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly, spiced nicely and in very generous (without being too overboard) quantities. My wife chose to take her brisket portion home, to be eaten after we got home the following evening, but I managed to finish every delicious bite. Non meat-eaters had several other options, too, but I'm glad that I chose the salmon, which was served on a nice brioche bun, the potatoes were superb and the cole slaw - perhaps more creamy than some might like - was very tasty and a perfect counterpart to the spice on the fish. All in all, a very nice experience considering the 35+ years in between visits. Highly recommended.

Beautiful new location

By Karyn H |

Visited Carson's with friends and family on my trip to Chicago to celebrate my son's participation in the Hyde Park jazz festival. They have moved to a new location which is right on the river walk. It is very beautiful and upscale. The whole back wall is open to the river so you can watch the boats go by. The inside design is sleek and all the chairs are white leather. It is a little dark in there at night. The food was delicious as usual. I had the rib tips which is what I love most there. Their steaks are delicious. My son had pork chops that were extremely thick and he said delicious.

Excellent Evening at Carson's

By Nessim |

We went to Carson's on a recommendation and it certainly delivered. The staff was great, courteous and professional. The establishment is clean and well-maintained. I had the full rack of ribs with the house coleslaw. The food was impeccable and I will certainly be returning to Carson's on my next visit to Chicago. Thank you, Carson's, for a great evening.

New swanky digs for an old Chicago favorite - food as good as ever

By Dedgehog |

This new Chicago location seems much more up-market than previous places - we used to regularly visit the N. Harlem restaurant. We ate early on a Tuesday evening and ordered the cornbread, which was very good, and four half-orders of ribs, which is all we can eat these days. The ribs, coleslaw and potatoes were just the same as my wife and I remember them. My sister and brother-in-law were suitable impressed. The service was great and very friendly without being obsequious.

Steak, Ribs, and Au Gratin Potatoes

By BamaRowersMom |

Have eaten there many times, but it was a long time ago, so on our visit to Chicago, it was definitely on our list. We made our reservations via Open Table. I really wanted a steak, so I ordered the ribeye and it was huge. A part of it was tough and had a lot of sinew, but the other part was delicious and super tender. My sides were salad with the house dressing, which is amazing, and also the au gratin potatoes, also amazing. Word of warning, the potatoes and cheese are really hot and if you can’t wait, you know in advance what hot melting cheese can do to you.... My hubby had the ribs and thought they were very good. The sauce was sticky and sweet and was served nice and warm. The slaw that came with the ribs was delicious, and he really enjoyed his ramekin of au gratin potatoes. Only deduction is for the tough part of the steak. We really enjoyed our meal and our evening.

Best Pork Chop Ever!

By Robin G |

Seriously this restaurant means business when described as the best BBQ. Chargrilled pork chop is delicious - tender, tangy and yummy! The single chop is inches thick and one makes for a huge portion! The side salads are like entrees - again huge portions. The double baked potato does not disappoint. Jay was our waiter - and service was excellent! Truly a must for BBQ lovers! And a must for those visiting Chicago (location is near Navy Pier). Remember portions are huge and you will have leftovers. Entrees are a good value.

Outstanding Location for a Group Dinner - Everyone LOVED it!

By Sherry G |

We recently held a very large meeting dinner at Carson's and it far exceeded my expectations. The staff members are friendly, competent and efficient. The food was delicious and the special cocktails made everyone very happy. Since I arranged the event, I received many compliments on my restaurant selection. What I did not tell them is that I really wanted to go to Carson's because they start with a cornbread course. The cornbread did not disappoint and the rest of the meal was just as good. I highly recommend this place for everyone.

Just Average BBQ

By Steven A. |

I have heard how Carson's has some of the best BBQ in Chicago, but I was not impressed. I tried a sampling of their full rack of Baby Back Ribs, BBQ Pork Chops, and BBQ Chicken, double baked potato's and cornbread. The Baby Back Ribs were slightly tough and fatty, the Pork Chop was juicy but very fatty. Of the three (Ribs, Pork Chop and Chicken), the chicken was the best. However, when an establishment brags about one certain item, wish is in their name - "Ribs", then they should leave a "Wow" impression, and they didn't. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad, but not life-changing or even good enough for me to eat at Carson's Ribs Chicago again.

Not what they used to be ) :

By RN B |

We were so excited to find a Carson's Ribs still exists! Unfortunately we have been disappointed two out of two times with both quality and service. First time around I waited 40 minutes for curbside delivery before I finally went into the store to retrieve my order.....and waited another 10 minutes! No apology, no discount, no piece of pie thrown in for the inconvenience. Both times ribs were soooooo fatty, a little fat would be fine but these were just way too fatty to even try to finish, fries were cold. Best part was the loaf of bread. Overall the meals have not even nearly met our expectations of the Carson's we used to know. $100.00 wasted. So sorry that we will not be back.

Ribs, Ribs, Ribs and then Prime rib!

By Ricksimons |

Split a wedge salad which could feed 4 people. Then had half slab of ribs, au gratin potatoes, and a prime rib dinner. The ribs were out of this world but the prime rib was 2 inches thick, medium rare and tender as all get up! If you like cheese you will like the au gratin potatoes.

Same Beat

By Wilkins K |

A quick $10 taxi ride from downtown @ChiUnionStation @Amtrak took us to the new @CarsonsRibs, perfectly located 5 minutes walking distance from scenic and active @NavyPier. Having been lucky enough to eat at the old downtown location - with it's classic old Chicago wood-paneled, low light, local memorabilia vintage interior - I think I prefer this modern, airy, eclectic-contemporary décor better. The service staffers were friendly and inviting, as they presented our food without superfluous fanfare. As expected the ribs were meaty, vivacious and fantastic. I used my fingers. I used a knife. I ripped it apart. Sauce on my fingers. Sauce on my hands. Sauce on my bib - and I liked it. The Chicken Cobb salad was a visually stunning and delightfully fresh thing unto itself. My cheddar-crusted AuGratin Potatoes were sinfully delicious.

Delicious food and great service

By Melissa H |

Wonderful atmosphere, attentive wait staff, great service & delicious food. All these contributed to a very pleasant evening out. My favorite is the chargrilled NY strip steak. I can't go here and not order it- perfectly cooked. Ribs were phenomenal as well.

MEAT

By ilovecorndogs |

Was VERY happy with my steak - and so was the entire family, great assortment of sides, nice waitress, good selection of drinks But I feel this place is a little worn, living of its previous fame and allure... Still a nice place, but was not blown away

Chicago Tradition

By Paisan P |

We have had ribs in Kansas City, Texas, Cincinnati, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida. They were all great place to have ribs. Now we add Chicago and Carsons ribs to our list. The service here is great. Great service, everyone is very friendly and they work hard to make sure you have a great dining experience. There were 6 of us the ribs juicy and full of flavor, the cornbread moist and tasty, twice baked potato a big hit and the slaw was good. Everything was cooke and flavored perfectly. If you like ribs this is your place. Clean, good service, reasonable prices, great food - a must.

We liked it a lot

By josemcapa |

We were there today, we had ribs and the rib sandwich with potato gratin, we really liked it, the very nice place, the service very well, we really liked it.

Excellent food and service!

By Betty |

The service, food and drinks were excellent. We ordered the famous corn breads, crab cakes, Caesar Salad, Mediterrean Shrimp, Cedar Plank Salmon and BBQ Baby Back Ribs. The meal was superb and the server was nice and attentive. We always have a great experience here.

Best restaurant in Chicago

By Andy P |

Out of everywhere we are in Chicago this was our favourite. We had steak, chicken and ribs and everything was juicy and tasty. It was cooked to perfection. We had a seat by the river and Jose was our server. He was attentive and made some great recommendations. If you only eat at one place in Chicago pick this one and you won’t be disappointed

A Tale of Two Restaurants

By Jonathan B |

I headed over the the restaurant for prime rib, but all they had were a few pieces of medium well, so I opted for the ribs and pork chops. My meal was very hit or miss. For the good, the waitress recommended the coleslaw, and I have to say it might be the best I've ever tasted. I'd go back just for that. The ribs were slightly overdone, but the quality of the meat was good, and with the sauce, then were fine. I was a little hesitant when I read that they put on the sauce, then BBQ, but I was pleasantly surprised. I could still taste a nice smoke. The pork chop was over as well, and unfortunately, it was too dry to eat. The waitress took it back and substituted another half-rack of ribs. I love Greek potatoes, but these were subpar. There was barely a hint of citrus, and I don't think there was any rosemary or garlic. But the big thing was that like the meat, it was really overcooked. They were crusty on the outside and dry and bland on the inside Normally, I'd give the restaurant three stars based on the food, which was buoyed by the coleslaw. But the waitress was very attentive, and I appreciate her telling me that the bill included an 18% tip. And the receipt had the same thing in large, bold printing. I went to another Chicago restaurant a few months ago where it was hidden, and that caused a few problems with another table. Thanks to the good service and the coleslaw, I'll give this place another shot so I can try the prime rib

Excellent food and service and good value too.

By cwt |

The new location near Navy Pier is fancier, and a little more expensive, than their old location in River North, but the food and service and value are still very good. I always get the bbq pork chop, with slaw and au gratin potatoes, and I have never been disappointed. I liked the pork chop a little better when it was boneless, but the food and service have always been top notch, so no complaints. I highly recommend!

Worth the wait

By Guide20608346169 |

I had planned a visit to Chicago with my girlfriend to see the Cubs/Mets series at the end of May. I had diligently planned our days and where we were going to eat as all the baseball games were at night. Carson’s was one of the places that I wanted to visit. Unfortunately when Wednesday afternoon arrived I realized that Carson’s was not open for lunch I was devastated. Luckily it is open on Fridays and we were scheduled to fly out late in the afternoon. I walked in and was immediately greeted with a smile and an openness that was impressive. We were dress casually but received 5 star treatment from the start. I ordered the cornbread and a full rack of ribs with coleslaw and au gratin potatoes. Started with an order of wings that were fabulous. The ribs do not come sauced rather a bowl of sauce is provided. The ribs are NOT fall off the bone rather cooked to perfection and tender. I am a bit of a snob about coleslaw and Carson’s did not disappoint in anyway. The potatoes were delicious and the cornbread was absolutely amazing. Do not pass on the cornbread. As disappointed as I was on Wednesday that they weren’t open for lunch I was just as excited on Friday when I received such a wonderful meal. The staff was excellent and accommodating without being overbearing and hovering. DO NOT leave Chicago without stopping at Carson’s for a meal. It is truly worth the wait.

Recommend while in Chicago

By Constance W |

Very nice atmosphere! If traveling without your best wardrobe it’s okay! Prime rib was huge! ($55.00) The biggest I’ve ever ‘tried’ to eat! It was very good. Au jus tasted a little different than what I like, but not a deal breaker. No bread served with the meal but you probably couldn’t eat it anyway! Slaw comes with the meal and it is very good. You chose another side like baked potato, fries, veggies, etc. Service was good. I would recommend!

Always an Amazing,Quality Experience of Food, Service & Atmosphere

By CHICAGO BOCA |

Everything is done so well, I have had weeks where we go three times. The ribs are always amazing. Remember to try the steaks which are Prime and better than any NYC steak house I have been to. The Greek Chicken is the best. I like it a bit crispy with the Greek Potato wedges also crispy. The salads and cole slaw are an institution unto themselves. Great atmosphere and the staff are so nice, you will have a great experience and be back again an again. Great place for a date or with a group of friends, as there is something for everyone on the menu.We go fairly often as a couple, but friends always say yes when we suggest Carson's.

Pretty Good BBQ - Pleasant Service

By soror0198 |

FYI: this was a carryout experience. The Carson's just opened in our neighborhood, Streeterville in the past month. As transplants from Texas to Chicago, we'd been hearing about Carson's, so I'd been curious to see what all the hype was about? Called in our order on a gloomy Chicago Sunday afternoon and was told our food would be ready in about 25 minutes. One thing to note, "lunch boxes" are available on the weekends vs. just during traditional weekday lunch periods - that's a bonus, especially if you're just trying it out for the first time. We ordered a 1/2 slab of ribs and 1/2 BBQ chicken. Each comes with slaw and your selected side. Upon arriving for pick-up, I came right on time as they were bringing my order up. One employee cashed me out and the gentleman who took my initial phone order reviewed my order with me - nice touch vs. just handing me the bag and sending me on my way. My husband and I both enjoyed the coleslaw (think KFC - sweet, finely chopped cabbage and semi-soupy). The BBQ sauce is sweet, but not too sweet or over-powering. The chicken was very tender. The ribs were decent, but not very meaty, a little disappointed with that. We also ordered their "famous" cornbread - another average dish - I think maybe if you have some honey butter, it might spruce it up just a little. Overall, I'd give Carson's food a solid B-.

Simply Delicious

By Travel Girl |

First, Carson’s on Wells Street has moved to a new location. Generous lunch portions. It’s been over 25 years since I’ve eaten at Carson’s, and the food is still as good as I remembered. The new restaurant is warm with comfortable booth seating for couples. The beef brisket and pull pork sandwiches are very good.

laege portions

By rjarmusik2001 |

I give this restaurant a 3 star rating only for the food I happened to have that day the portions are large so you dont have tp worry about still being hungry when you leave. infact you may want to order a smaller portion or may find yourself asking for a doggie bag. The atmosphere wast pleasant and service was friendly. the food is good dont get me wrong the ribs I had seemed to be on the dry side, though they were tasty. Next time I go in there it could be a totally different experience where Im eating ribs that fall off the bone. The walls a lined w/pictures of celebrities so it is a restaurant worth eating at.

Great food, good prices

Got some take out from Carson’s during a family weekend trip to Chicago and very pleased that we did! Amazing food- highly recommend!

Lovely barbecue food in a pleasant setting

By cmasb |

This was a lovely restaurant. We came for the barbecue food and we weren’t disappointed. The booth we were allocated was very comfortable and there were log fires to add to the ambiance. We chose baby back ribs and chicken, which were delicious. We might have preferred the meats to be somewhat more moist, but the extra barbecue sauce provided went some way to remedy that. Our server Alex and his colleagues were friendly and attentive and kept us well supplied with water and other beverages 😋 We would happily return.

Dinner

By Neil |

The absolute best barbecue ribs I know of, bar none. I crave the food from Carsons and have been going to their restaurants for over 30 years. The new downtown Chicago location is beautiful and will keep me coming.

A nice find in downtown Chicago

By Jensmunk |

I discovered this restaurant by reading the review of a Tripadvisor user who was looking for a medium-priced steak house. From the outside the place does not appear particularly flashy but once inside there is an excellent welcome. Once we were sitting at our table, overlooking the canal, a waiter approached and introduced himself with his name. He told us that he would serve us and for anything we could refer to him. Then he described the origin of the meat and other products eaten in the restaurant. During dinner he showed up several times asking if everything was going well and if we needed anything else. All with kindness and tact. Good boy!!! The dinner was based on meat accompanied by various side dishes and sauces. The meat was of good quality and cooked as requested. Finally, which doesn't hurt, very large tables with very comfortable armchairs

A must in Chicago!

All of our food was great and the service was outstanding! It was a couple block walk from our hotel. One of a kind restaurant with great food!

A nostalgic visit back to Chicago and Carson’s.

By Richard H |

My wife and I dined here twice over Labor Day weekend. First time with our grown children and their spouses. Second time just my wife and me. We all flew into Chicago from West Coast cities to celebrate birthdays and our anniversary. My wife grew up in Chicago and we have lived in Phoenix and Scottsdale the last 40 years. One of our favorite restaurants in Scottsdale was Don and Charlie’s and Carson’s has almost the same menu. Excellent ribs, coleslaw, salad and the twice baked potato. Very good cocktails and service. My only complaint is that Carson’s doesn’t serve the chopped liver appetizer plate. I had been looking forward to it. Our server indicated that the Deerfield location still offers the chopped liver and joked that the locals in Deerfield would riot if it was ever taken off the menu. Having once lived in Deerfield, I heartedly agreed.

New location but still the best ribs anywhere!

By SchneiderVision |

We used to live in Chicagoland and came here often. I was back in town for a visit and found their new location near Navy Pier. The location is great! The food is still amazing! Try the au gratin potatoes!

Flew in from Seattle to celebrate our anniversary.

By SeatravelerWA |

Ribs, Pork Chops, top level steaks, all the best items in the city. Very busy on weekends, we visited on a crazy holiday weekend, the owner brought us glasses of champagne to make up for the wait. The crowd was hip, the food great and life is good.

Simply amazing!

By Wendell B |

Fantastic food, atmosphere, and service!! My wife and I were celebrating birthday / anniversary and could not have picked a better place to enjoy it! Location is perfect if you are going on a sightseeing boat river tour after dinner. The Bar B Q ribs were amazing and the meat fell off the rib! AND special kudos to our waitress, Betsy. Personality plus, attentive, and proved to be a very good tour guide! Looking forward to our next visit!

Great barbecue with a big bonus

By Jamie E |

I love barbecue that is smoked and charred and I was not disappointed at all with my ribs and pork chops. They were both delicious. What I did not expect was the absolute best cornbread that I have ever tasted and I have had a LOT of cornbread all over the south. Add to that their signature coleslaw and the dining package is complete. The coleslaw is finely chopped in a creamy base that doesn't include any unneeded ingredients - just great coleslaw the way it's meant to be. With so many dining options in Chicago, if you are near the Navy Pier you just have to clear your dining schedule for some barbecue at Carson's. Note: the pork chops are extra thick so don't ask for medium well or the extra cooking with dry them out. The portions are very generous.

The best meal we had in Chicago!

By travelislifeMiami |

We were promptly greeted and seated although we did not have a reservation. Our server Heather was fantastic. She suggested a local draft beer but since we were unsured, she brought us a sample. The local beer was great, and we ordered it. The corn bread was the best that we have eaten in a long time. The baby back ribs, and the brisket were fantastic and the servings were big. We were so full that couldn't eat dessert.

Food was good. Service was not

By Sandra W |

Came with a large group for dinner. Service was not good. Initially did get my soda and was refilled once but then nothing. My table mate asked for hot tea and had to ask 4 times before she got it including the manager who just said ask your server who was nowhere to be seen. Duh it he had been around we would have asked him. The food was good. I had the chicken & ribs. Chicken was very moist. Ribs although they had good flavor where very thin without much meat which made it more like jerky. The potatoes where to die for. Didn't get our coleslaw until we asked for it but because the server was not around we were all at least 3/4 done with our meals before it came. My table mates had the salmon which they all raved about. Desert was key lime pie or Tiramisu. They dropped off 2 of each on a plate. What if all of us wanted key lime? To bad because no servers around to ask. Guess we were supposed to do paper, rock , scissors to decide who got what. I think the food was really good but desperately need to work on customer service.

Fantastic Food and Atmosphere

Carsons was the best restaurant that we went to during our family getaway. The server Betsy was so helpful and friendly. The food was delicious and plentiful. Great value for your money; very reasonable. We will definitely be returning!

Delicious Rib Tips!!!!

By pghcutie72 |

Carson’s is my go to for rib tips when I visit Chicago. I got the rib tip dinner with a double baked potato, cole slaw & the Tuscan loaf. The portions are huge!! You can definitely share an order with someone. I ordered through Uber Eats and the food arrived super hot!!! The Tuscan loaf was amazing!!!! Carson's....you have a forever customer in me!!

Exceeded expectations

By Craig D |

Ok, I expect the ribs to be top notch at Carson's, but the crab cake my wife and I just had there exceeded our expectations. My wife and I spend a lot of time in Clearwater Beach, St Pete Beach and Pass-A-Grille Florida. We have had some of the best crab cakes this area has to offer and Carson's Crab Cakes are noteworthy and a very pleasant surprise. Frenchy's, Guppies, Clear Sky, Brass Monkey, Sea Critters and Leverock's I expect quality crab cakes, but Carson's … WOW...did not expect top notch crab cakes at Carson's. Nancy, thank you for your amazing hospitality! we can't wait to return.

Outstanding!!

By WI Weezie |

What an outstanding dinner on Christmas Eve 2023! Great service by Marino and his bus person and the food was extraordinary!! We love all of the combo options. I had ribs & tenderloin and my husband had ribs & brisket. The AuGratin potatoes were amazing and the Cole slaw was also great (I consider myself a Cole slaw connoisseur!!). Plus - they surprised us with an anniversary dessert - 32 years!! We highly recommend AND they have another location in Milwaukee from what we read. 👏👏👏

Rude Mike

By Frank W |

Made a call to make a reservation and experienced not the normal cordial friendliness over the phone. After Mike discovered that I was a repeat customer he changed his attitude. Prior to arrival at the restaurant, I realized I that I had left my cell phone at home, hence the call to the restaurant using friends phone. After arriving, and checking in was informed about the requirement to show vaccination card. It was on my cellphone and since I didn't have the phone decided we would request carryout. Mike provides menu and as I begin to place order (since I had informed him of takeout), he points over to another area to now place the order. His attitude and the lack of customer service was very concerning. He was so rude that I chose not to patronize the restaurant. I understand the limited staffing and people doing double duties during this season. However, I wouldn't expect this type of behavior from a manager even on their worst day. Just thinking and saying out loud that this experience is nothing like ever in the new location or its previous location on Wells.

Superb Ribs and Chops

By T R |

We chose this restaurant due to its location between the navy pier and our hotel. The decor is very nice with white tablecloth Covered tables in individual booths. The service was excellent the waitress even provided us with recommendations for live music venues in the city. The food was superb we chose the ribs and the pork chop both were super tasty and large portions they even provide you with bibs to ensure the barbecue sauce doesn’t get on your clothes. The cost was reasonable definitely cheaper than other places we tried and much better quality of food and service. Would definitely visit again and would recommend to family and friends to give it a visit.

Yum with a capital Y!

By Jon B |

Had a group dinner and we passed food around the table to sample different things. All of it was good. You feel like an old style Chicago restaurant with all the pictures on the wall. I had the steak which was really, but the bbq sauce for the ribs stole the show. A perfect combination of sweet and spicy.

Wonderful rips experience!

By florian |

We been as a couple there after a long day in Chicago touristing around the town! I wanted long time to try Chicago rips and this is the place to go! We shared the big portion and we both had a salat before and that was perfect idea, the portion are big enough for two! You can choose from different sides!

Best Ribs

By bigred1949 |

These baby back ribs are the best ever. They are a little chewy as opposed to fall off the bone. The extra sauce comes warm. Get the augratin potatoes and the gold brick sandae

Half rack 🙂

By Twoputts2014 |

Wow, this place has great decor and a buzz of conversations. Well stocked bar. Staff are very friendly. My half rack was tender and the juicy sauce made it special. Great bibs too, take a picture. Gratin potato was very tasty. The house salad was huge so be mindful. Drinks are reasonable priced. There is a parking-dinning deal. The parking lot is underground opposite the restaurant and a cross walk very close. Enjoy the decor and you can (take away UK 🇬🇧)your to go in the US🇺🇸

Beef at Its Best

By Susan P |

Knowing that Chicago has a history of beef on its plate, we asked our food tour guide for a recommendation for Chicago steak. Without hesitation, he recommended Carson's as the place the Chicago natives go. Recently moved to the Streeterville district, it makes a great destination place after visiting the Navy Pier. We arrived after a day-long sight-seeing adventure, yet they greeted our grubby appearances with professional courtesy. Our waiter was helpful in recommendations, and provided excellent service. The steaks were done to perfection. We have to go back soon to enjoy those ribs everyone is talking about. Given the portions and the preparation, the prices are very reasonable.

Birthday dinner with family

By Phillip |

It was my fiancé's birthday weekend and I suggested going to Carson's for steak with family and it was also restaurant week. We got a very good table near the middle of the dining room where we could see many of the photos on the wall. Our server was very pleasant, personable, and she was also able to offer suggestions on desserts as well as side dishes. I thought the food was excellent and the restaurant week made it a good value for trying out a little bit of everything with 3 courses. The only thing I did not like was that it seemed to take a long time for food to come to the table. It took over 45 minutes from the time we got our salads until we got our entrees. Other than that, I really liked this place and we will definitely come back.

Dining at the new location of Carson's

By 741shirleym |

Let me start by saying the ambience is nice. I considered bringing my grandmother and mom here because they like ribs but I did not see wheelchair accessible ramps. There are about 4-5 stairs you need to climb to get into the restaurant. I made reservations for my 5th year anniversary for 8:30pm. We arrived early at 7:45pm. I was told that although we arrived earlier than our scheduled reservation we still had to wait. I guess we were ok with that seeing that the place was packed. We waited until around 8:45 before we inquired about our reservation and was told they are running behind but we should be seated shortly. What I noticed was people who came in after us was getting seated before us. This was because the walk-in list was moving a little faster. Here is where I became a little frustrated, we pre-planned and made reservations which seems like if a seat became available close to our reservation time we should have been given first priority. I'm not sure of the process but this is my thought process. We were not seated for dinner until 9:15pm, by this time I'm starving and not very happy. The best part of the night was our waitress (I can't recall her name) was awesome and the martini's we ordered were delish. The food was so-so. The fact that they have no vegetable options other than what's offered that night didn't go over well. I love vegetables!! My blackened salmon was really good, my husband didn't particularly care for his chicken/rib combo because it was smothered in sauce. We probably won't return at least not right away.

Food good but needs a dress code

By Marcus T B |

Downtown Chicago Carsons has been around for years and the food is still delicious. Aside from the meat selections, we also enjoyed the cedar-plank salmon. The majority of their business seems to be carry-out these days. Just as well because they have dumbed it down clientele-wise for the uncouth tourists. There was so much camo-clothing, baseball hats, tank tops, and beards that we felt we were in a live episode of Duck Dynasty. Carsons really needs to implement a basic dress code like real steak houses, otherwise an Olive Garden or Outback has better ambiance.

Excellent Dining Choice

By Scott60538 |

My family dined at Carson's for the first time for dinner after spending day on the Mag Mile & Navy Pier. We chose it because it was in the same building that we parked the car. Our server was Stephanie, and she did an amazing job, from being knowledgeable on the menu and how the dishes are prepared. My wife had the salmon with the Greek Potatoes. I tried the potatoes and they are probably the best I've had dining. My daughter got half slab of ribs with twice baked potatoes, and I got the Mediterranean shrimp with the twice baked potatoes. Although, we would get the Greek potatoes next time. We absolutely loved each entree. You must try the Tuscan bread for a appetizer, it is one of best breads I've ever had at a restaurant. Surprisingly, the interior of the restaurant is very nice on the inside, really liked the space, if you decide to go tell them you would like to sit in the back dining room.

Nostalgic for the old restaurant site

By Stephan |

Sure, the ribs were great (full slab) and the cole slaw tasted good, the service was pleasant and the restaurant is modern and clean. But I cannot escape the history that weighted in at the old restaurant. Then, the ribs tasted heavenly, the slaw was exceptional and the entire experience - bib included - resulted in an unforgettable urge to return. Unfortunately that is lost forever! Don’t get me wrong, Carson’s is still good and fairly prized, but unfortunately my attraction to it has faded, though I have been a customers of theirs during all my frequent visits to Chicago since the 1980’s.

Still Our Favorite

By MItraveler1957 |

We go to Carson's every time we come to Chicago. We started visiting Carson's almost 40 years ago and it never let's us down. The ribs are cook perfectly and we love their sauce. It is a sweet sauce, but not overly sweet. We also love the augratin potatoes. Since we were here last they have added corn bread to the menu. We had to try it and it was also excellent. Everyone seems to be passionate about their favorite rib place. This is our favorite and I highly recommend you give them a taste.

Truthfully? Disappointed

By Janice R |

I guess for years folks have been touting how fabulous Carson's ribs were that I was expecting something out of this world. For me, truthfully, they were fine, but I can make ribs just as tasty as their ribs were. I thought the hostess station was a bit awkward and felt that we were a bit rushed through the meal. It was a Saturday, so maybe just an off-night? Doubt that I will return.

Phenomenal food but poor service

By soph22elizabeth |

We went to Carson’s for my 22nd birthday dinner and the food was PHENOMENAL. Unfortunately, we did have a rather unpleasant time with the reservation and how quickly the food came out. We made our reservation for 6:30, and wasn’t seated until 7:10. We asked multiple times why the wait was, seeing as I had booked the reservation months in advance, and the hostess proceeded to tell us that the only table they had allotted for us, was taken, and that the other party hadn’t left yet. After FINALLY being sat, we ordered promptly as we were all starving and had already surveyed the menu, we did not get our food for another hour at 8 o’clock. Very VERY slow, but fantastic food, so make sure you have plenty of time for a night out. I had the baby back ribs, which came with coleslaw which unfortunately I did not like- but the ribs were AMAZING. We went with the corn bread and Tuscan bread for the table- three orders of each and they were both absolutely amazing. I could have a meal out of just the cornbread! The double baked potato was nice as well, not the best and very small, but nice.

Still the best rib tips in Chicago!

By Alb-517 |

I am writing a new review for Carsons do to the fact that they recently relocated to a new building. Not to worry - they STILL have the best rib tips in Chicago! The prime rib sandwich is also delicious. The new building is more modern and sleek that the old building was. While the old building was darker inside, the new is not. It is equipped with a great bar, as well as a fireplace. They also now offer several draft beer options, where the old location was strictly bottled beer. The service is still great, and I seen many of the same crew from the old location. Stop on in!

Great service and cool atmosphere

By E W |

Excellent service. Good food. Clean. Went in to get out from the rain after visiting Navy Pier and was pleased with menu options and service and cleanliness. Had appetizers, beer and dessert. Saw groups of friends and couples and solos from 20s to 70s- all enjoying the experience.

New Carson's as great as the old location!

By Hoosierdaddy26 |

Carson's is, was, & hopefully always will be my favorite restaurant in Chicago. Whether it be the famous ribs, succulent steaks, or any of the many delicious sides...coleslaw, au-gratins, twice-baked, or heavenly salads you simply CANNOT go wrong with Carson's!

Prime rib is the best!

By PattyPfromtheD |

The food and service is amazing. This was our second time here, and we will be back! Get the prime rib. You will not be disappointed. It’s huge and so good! We did make dinner reservations a few days beforehand just to be on the safe side. Love the ambience too. Highly recommend!

FANTASTIC MEAL

By johnjT5799BX |

Solo dining in Chicago and really wanted a steak dinner - found Carson's off of Michigan Ave - fantastic! Place is nicely decorated, clean and had an inviting ambience. Put all of the COVID precautions in place and it's still got a lot of charm. Ordered the house salad with the house dressing - wonderful! The star of the meal was the barrel cut filet mignon - medium rare with the cremini mushrooms and blue cheese - mouth is still watering from this meal! The twice-baked potato was a tad dry for my tastes though still flavorful. And the little side dish of Cole slaw was nicely done and a good complement to the beef & blue cheese. Prices are very reasonable; service was attentive and at the ready. All in all - will be going back on my next trip to Chitown - great job!!

New location, same great ribs!

By Warren Olfert |

I’ve been going to Cason’s Ribs whenever I come to Chicago since the 90’s. Last December, I headed for the restaurant only to discover the old location was closed! This time I discovered their new location on Illinois and headed for the restaurant. The old place had a lot of old Chicago atmosphere; the new place is elegant and, of course, still has the same incredible ribs and chops. One of my favorite parts of the visit is always walking around and looking at the collection of signed celebrity photos they have from over the years—lots of Chicago personalities and famous faces. In other words, the scenery has changed but the food is the same. Get either a 1/2 or full slab of ribs or a bone-in pork chop; AND, always order the cole slaw and potatoes au gratin. You won’t forget it!

Ya tender and delicious steak and pleasant service

By 旅楽し |

The fillet steak was tender and matched very well with the spinach cream sauce. The back-rib barbecue was also soaked in the sauce, which was delicious. I ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail and a Chicago original beer, both of which were refreshing and matched the food. The waiter was friendly but well serviced and I added a tip. Cooking back ribs can take a bit of time, so we Recommendation you go when you have time. You'll find autographs and photos of athletes such as Michael Mickelson and Jordan, so check them out while you wait.

Great New Location

By FoodFight101 |

Having served memorable steak and rib dinners to generations of locals and visitors, Carson's recently moved from their longtime Wells Street digs to a flagship-caliber restaurant adjacent to Lake Shore Drive and Navy Pier. The new space, more than twice the size of the previous one, is handsome and contemporary. Steakhouse devotees will appreciate the familiarity of high-back booths, but the dark woods, white linens, cushy white chairs and celebrity photos give the split-level dining room and two (yes, TWO) bars the air of a swank 1970s supper club. The south dining room has a window wall with a view of the skyline and the Ogden Slip. A live jazz ensemble added to the enjoyment of our visit. Carson's has expanded their menu through the years, but topnotch BBQ ribs and steaks have always been their mainstay. Lunch, happy hour and late night menus are offered in addition to dinner. The Missus and I almost agree that Carson's ribs are among the best on this planet (except that I find their sauce a tad too sweet; I prefer Texas-style sauce). Service on this visit was splendid, rib bibs and all, but we would have preferred the coleslaw to arrive before our entrées. Reservations are recommended. The best way to experience Carson's is to arrive early and partake in a round of drinks and camaraderie at the bar (be sure to request the complimentary chopped liver and cheese spreads) prior to being seated at the table. A carry-out counter is located just inside the entrance. Validated self-parking is available.

Finger licking ribs

By EnglishHugh |

We met up with some friends and we all fancied ribs. For an appetiser we shared a blue cheese iceberg lettuce. It was huge so we each had a quarter which set us up for the half back of ribs we’d each ordered. The ribs were good; not great. While the meat was well cooked the bbq sauce was a little to sweet and not spiced enough for us. Also it seemed very sticky. The service was poor. We were rushed to order and there was no break between finishing the appetiser and starting the main course which detracted from the ambience of the evening. For me on the night Carson’s was closer to good than very good as I believe (by reputation) that the service at least is usually better.

Still the place for Ribs

By Dennis R |

Carson's has been doing ribs for as long as I can remember. Locations have changed, but the ribs have not. They are as good as they have ever been.

Nice dinner at Carson’s

By Nailcutter |

Came here for dinner while in town for a tradeshow. Service was very good. Got drinks and the waiter got us bread at no charge! Very good. Ceaser salad was a $7 upgrade but worth it. Barbeque chicken and baked potato solid. NY Strip for $43 was very good as were the augratin potatoes. Overall very good meal.

Outstanding food & service

By MavesWife |

Well we ended up eating here 6/8 days whilst we were in Chicago! Absolutely outstanding restaurant with an amazing team working there. Food is fantastic (champagne vinegarette omg!!!), brisket, chicken, pork and don't get me started on the sides - delicious! We had some lovely interactions with the team, but we have to call out Blake and Linda. They were lovely & welcoming and took the time to say hello each time we were in. So please give it a try if your in town, you really won't regret it.... we only regret not going 8/8 nights! your friends from Scotland.

A rough night out at Carson's salvaged by service

By Bullzfanzclan |

Stopped into Carson's recently anticipating a fine evening of Chicago-style beef and barbecue. It is lovely restaurant but it appears we caught them on a bad night. Our experience went from bad to surreal and ended up only being saved by good service from the Carson's bar staff and the management's good customer relations efforts. First, we arrived for a mid-t- late evening (8 p.m) reservation and should have been tipped off immediately that something was amiss. Several customers were engaged in fairly animated conversations with the hostesses with complaints about the wait or the location of their seating. We checked in for our reservation and then took a seat at the bar for what turned into loooong wait before someone checked back with us about our table. In the meantime, we decided it would be best to just go ahead and eat at the bar. Two bartenders promptly and courteously greeted us, served up some splendid cocktails, and took our food orders. We were advised the prime rib was already gone. While we enjoyed drinks and football games on nearby big screens, the customer next to us got into a bizarre, loud argument with one of the bartenders. The customer loudly shouted "Liar" as he stabbed the bar with a steak knife. Needless to say, they stopped serving the fellow and fairly quickly ushered him to the door. The food came pretty quickly and when it did it was, to be frank, only average barbecue at best. The ribs and chicken I ordered seemed well overdone, a flaw which couldn't be hidden by excess dousing of sauce that covered the entree. My side of broccoli didn't fare much better. My bride said her filet steak was acceptable but not exemplary. Finally, one of the hostesses checked on our reservation after more than an hour wait, she asked if we had "just given up" and decided to eat at the bar. When we replied affirmatively they bought us a round of drinks on the house; a nice gesture to be sure. Also, through it all the bar staff waiting on us was friendly, attentive and efficient, even in the wake of a bad night and some unusual circumstances. I would like to try Carson's again on a better night but I don't think I'll be in a hurry to return.

Excellent Food & Friendly and efficient service

The ribs were amazing - heartily recommended. We called in after the theatre thinking we might be turned away but even at 10pm we were given a warm welcome and were soon tucking into a delicious dinner. Great place. Thank you.

Our party of 6 went to Carson’s for lunch. Very polite staff and very nice mood, dimly lit restaurant which made for a nice time. Food was good and moderately priced. Overall nice romantic place to go!!

Lovely meal at Carson's

By Guys8115 |

Selected Carson because it was 10 minute walk from the hotel and the reviews on Trip Advisor. We really enjoyed our meal. Service was good as is the food. Decent menu selection, including seafood for those not eating meat. Decent portion sizes as well. If you order the Baby-back ribs go for the full rack so you can use the all the delicious BBQ sauce is served on-the-side (so you can add as much or little as you like). Wife had prawns which were huge. The meal cost $180 including drinks (alcohol and soft) and tip for the four of us. This works out at $45 or about £35 per person. Considering the meals and service we thought it was good value. Definitely worth a visit if in Chicago.

Undercooked Baby Back Ribs

By NoSpin |

Very disappointed with the baby back ribs. They were way undercooked . For a place famous for barbeque I expected much better. The ribs were meaty and the sauce was very flavorful. However, they should be cooked well enough that the meat should almost fall off the hone. The meat was on the tough side. My wife's salmon was excellent. Both our Cole slaw sides were soupy there was so much liquid, and there were no carrots in it. The twice baked potato was just okay. The best part of the meal was the fudge brownie sundae.

Terrible Management

By Jonny Z |

We had dinner at Carson's today and everything started out fine. Sometime after we ordered our waitress was transferred to being a bartender. After that, no one checked on us, and we were left unattended. The manager came by and when I told him I wanted another glass of wine, rather than attending to that, he said he would find our server (which he didn't). The place is mismanaged and not worth a visit. There are dozens of well-run places in the same neighborhood that are more deserving of your money

Delicious Rib Tips!!!!

By pghcutie72 |

Carson’s is my go to for rib tips when I visit Chicago. I get the bucket and you get more than your money’s worth. I tried the Au Gratin potatoes for the first time and they were amazing. My only complaint is that the portion of potatoes could have stood to be larger for the price.

Ribs and more

By Julia O |

Hard on the Chicago River...enjoy the view & watch the drawbridge...this commodious yet tucked away spot carries the dynasty of decades of ribs. They’re good and meaty, with tons of a tangy, slightly sweet sauce (some on the ribs, lots more on the side) —-but don’t overlook the shrimp & the remarkable steak salad, or the melt in your mouth cornbread & twice-baked potato sides. Good wine selection with some unexpected quality by the glass. The room is long and somewhat narrow, with a few fireplaces to enjoy & comfy white leather chairs. Staff so attentive without hovering & no one rushed anyone. Seems to do a good to-go business with an Uber efficient staff: employee to someone in the back “We got Joanie up here & she doesn’t like to wait for her ribs.”...She was in and out in 2 minutes tops! Easy to drive by since there is no street sign, just letters on the building. 3 steps to the street, great on cold, windy and/or rainy Chicago nights.

Chicago November 21, 2025

By Gregg M |

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-Star Review Carson’s Steak House in Chicago was an outstanding experience from start to finish. We visited on Friday, November 21 after it was recommended to us, and they absolutely did not disappoint. The ambience was warm, inviting, and upscale without being overwhelming—the kind of atmosphere that makes you settle in and enjoy the evening. The lighting, décor, and overall vibe created the perfect setting for a great meal. Our server, Heather Nick, was the epitome of a great server. Her customer service was truly A-1, attentive without being intrusive, and every recommendation she made was spot on. The 10 oz filet was the best steak I have ever had—perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful. The wood plank salmon was delicious, and the lump crab was excellent as well. Carson’s clearly takes pride not only in their food but also in the overall dining experience. Heather is a tremendous asset to Carson’s. With the amazing food, top-tier service, and great ambience, we will definitely be returning. Highly recommended!

Great ribs, but the side dishes can be upgraded

By richj65 |

The ribs are large and meaty seasoned to perfection, but I was disappointed with the limited choice and small quantity of the accompanying sides. Overall, my experience was pleasant.

Takeout

By Margaret P |

Having returned to our residence for a few days and needing good wholesome food for our visiting family Carson’s certainly provided the solution. We ordered the Greek Chicken(delicious!)and sufficient for lunch the next day. Plus the baby back ribs were very meaty and delicious and passed the approval of the hard to please three year old. We will certainly be dining in next time. Many thanks to Alejandro for his professional service.

"Best bone in town"

By Taylor B |

After 40 years at Wells and Ontario, third-generation owner Dean Carson relocated his Carson's Ribs Prime Steaks & Famous Barbecue of Chicago restaurant to 465 East Illinois Street, at the east end of the River East Arts Center, in River East Plaza, east of Michigan Avenue, a short walk to Navy Pier. It may be a new environment but the long-standing steakhouse continues to serve slow-smoked American barbecue like its signature baby back ribs. Open from 3 to 10 Monday through Thursday, 11:30 to 11 on Friday and Saturday and 11:30 to 10 on Sunday, Carson's remains the gold standard for BBQ ribs, meaty with a tangy sauce and hint of sweetness. The new surroundings make for a breath of fresh air. My wife and I started with home-made cornbread, char-grilled Mediterranean shrimp and a loaf of fresh baked Tuscan bread with whipped butter. For an entree, I couldn't resist a full slab of BBQ baby back ribs with steak fries and cole slaw. Three napkins, please. Meanwhile, my wife chose the BBQ cedar plank salmon with au gratin potatoes and creamed spinach. For dessert, we shared a large portion of key lime pie. We're glad we didn't lose an old friend, that he opted to remain in the neighborhood.

Great service, good food and accommodating to special requests

By GlobalExec |

Setting up a lunch meeting (last minute) for five of us we requested a 'quiet' area of the restaurant and had strict time constraints. The restaurant, and its staff, was more than accommodating and did an excellent job of service us (quickly) delicious food while keeping us on task with our time limits. Great menu and a very clean, nice looking restaurant.

Changed location...food Unchanged..Still GREAT!!

By Veronica H |

I haven't been here in over a year as I live in the far suburbs. However, whenever I have out of town guests, I make it a point to bring them here, which is what I did on Saturday after our architecture tour on a gorgeous day on Lake Michigan and the Chicago river. Additionally, I made four new friends and persuaded them to join us! We all enjoyed the food; our waitress was extremely pleasant. However, I was a bit disappointed not to experience the welcoming feel I used to get when I visited the old location on Ontario. I don't want this minor point to cloud this review and influence folks not to go, as they would be doing themselves a disservice not to do so. I will communicate directly with the owner. My overall opinion has not changed. I will continue to visit, with or without out of town guests.

Gem of a place - classic and class

Have tried many dishes and all have been great. Good quality, great prices, nice environment and staff. Carsons continues to be a class act. Visit after visit, I am never disappointed at Carson’s Ribs, Steaks & BBQ! Their food is delicious & the staff is always friendly & accommodating! If you are from out of town, Carson’s should definitely be on your “to visit” list. You won’t be disappointed!! They’ve been a Chicago staple for years for good reason!

Sunday evening dinner

By #the_vacationist |

Reasonably priced steak joint looked inviting. Staff is nice and accommodating. Menu is basic with a splash of BBQ. Prices are low for Chicago. The premium (Prime) NY strip was average. It was over cooked. Wife had filet & crab cake. It was better. Stemmed vegetables were tasty. Waiter was awesome, but the food average. Wine list is okay, but spendy. Once was enough. Enjoy.

Visited the Carson's Ribs Chicago location,on Labor Day Sept 3,2019, with my husband, for date night. I haven't eaten here since the 1970's early 80's. They are in a new modern location. White linen tablecloths and white decor. Of course, I ordered the ribs, famous coleslaw and baked potato, with butter and sour cream, then topped it off with a glass of wine, Mascato. Everything was delicious 😋 My waitress named DeAnna was the best. I give the restaurant and Service 5 stars. I definitely will be returning. Deborah Williams

Love the location, love the ribs!

By Purplefan10 |

Carson’s may have moved to a new building, but it still delivers the same outstanding ribs I’ve been loving since the 1980s. The new space has a great vibe and there was an energy- even on a Thursday night- that seemed to be lacking the last couple of years at the Wells location. The service was very attentive. And the ribs just don’t get any better- tender, meaty, with an awesome sauce. Can’t wait to return!!

Finger licking tasty ribs

By TheUKChapmans |

Lovely ambience in this restaurant, cosy booth to sit in and welcoming team. Offered a sample of beers to ensure our choices were just right … nice touch. Ordered slab of ribs - not as we are used to in other establishments (that boom ‘rock music’ - ribs meat fall off the bone ....) but very delicious, not fatty, just full of tasty, good quality meat. Slaw was not great (watery and mainly cabbage tasting?), steak fries disappointing as not homemade (uk sell these in frozen bags ..) but caesar salad was very good. All things considered, would recommend and return but just for ribs, beer and a caesar salad.

Great food, great value.

By glen |

This is a great place. Top level food without a top level price. We ate at Kenzie Chop House the other night. About twice the money and the food wasn’t as good. I brought a bottle of wine to Kenzie for BYOB expecting to pay corkage and bought $40 worth of cocktails. They said the didn’t do BYOB anymore but made an exception. They charged corkage……$45! Carson’s was a total pleasure in comparison and the food was great. We’ll come back the next time we’re in Chicago.

Not worth the drive

By Charlette H |

We travelled 1.5 hours to eat here. From the time we arrived until the time we left the staff was not friendly or helpful. The host was sarcastic, the waiter was quite and did not explain anything to us, as we left they took our money and no one asked how our experience was. We waited awhile for our food, it was only 2 other tables there, when the food came out it was room temperature at best. The food was decent tasting but not at all what we remembered from a few years ago. As a waitress it broke my heart to only leave 10% on a $155 bill but my conscience would not let me leave $0 which is what they deserved.

Chicago's No. 1 barbecue since 1977

By Taylor B |

In 2018, after 40 years at Wells and Ontario, Carson's Ribs, Prime Steaks & Famous Barbecue of Chicago moved to 465 East Illinois Street, at the east end of the River East Arts Center, between McClurg Court and Peshtigo Court, in the Streeterville community. The landscape may have changed but the ribs, steaks and barbecue still taste as good as ever. Open from 3 to 10 Monday through Thursday, 11:30 to 11 on Friday and Saturday and 11:30 to 10 on Sunday, Carson's continues to tout its prime steaks but the restaurant made its reputation on ribs. So I order ribs. A full slab of barbecue baby back ribs with coleslaw, ultimate double baked potato and creamed spinach. The ribs are meaty and tasty with a tangy sauce and virtually slide off the bone. For starters, I chose shrimp De Jonghe with white wine, garlic, butter, chives and whipped bread crumbs and Caesar salad with parmesan, house-made croutons and house-made Caesar dressing. For dessert, I can't pass up a big slice of key lime pie with graham cracker and coconut crust. Carson's also has a location at 200 North Waukegan Road in north suburban Deerfield.

Service not equal to fabulous food.

Honestly, I expected fabulous service to go with what was really fabulous food. Bread with no bread plates ( had to ask), forgot requested water ( had to ask again), crayons for kids arrived just before dinner ( timing? Delivered by floor mgr who noticed). Just awkward service.

Superb lunch

By Graeme017 |

Came for lunch after a Lake Michigan cruise. The French onion soup was delicious and my wife had ribs with au gratin potatoes and I had the recommendation of the steak sandwich and wow that was so juicy and topped with caramelised onion . I could only fit in two of my Greek roasted potatoes but they were nice also. My wife had a Cosmo and a French champagne and I had a Fat Tire draught and a red wine blend. Off to Navy Pier to walk it all, off:) I highly recommend Carson’s!

Now we are family!!

By karaybon |

Let me tell you, we came and ate late Friday evening on the 26th of July and from the moment we walked in, we were treated fabulously. We got a nice table in the back overlooking the water. Besides the people at the bar we were the only ones back there. Our server was attentive and had great recommendations. The food absolutely delicious. I had the ribs and my partner had the NY strip. It was the best cole slaw I've ever had. Still, what made this meal so great was the end when Chris, the owner's son came over and hung out with us. What a GREAT guy. He brought us two desserts to help celebrate my birthday. This really made our visit to Chicago stand out and we can't wait to return!

As awesome as ever!

My wife and I chose this restaurant to celebrate our 34th anniversary. Carson’s did not disappoint. We don’t visit Chicago often but this is one of the three or four restaurants that I always try to visit. The food, service, and ambience are perfect. If possible, ask for Chay to be your server. He makes your meal a dinner and a show! Tip him extra!

I can't figure out why this place is reviewed so highly. The food just wasn't that great. It's crazy expensive and there are way better options.

New Location

Carson’s continues it’s excellent menu! The best ribs and double baked potato anywhere! Have eaten at this restaurant for decades and quality is always consistent.

Steak Night

By Gkmtouristguy |

Went for a family dinner. Had some of the best steak I have ever tasted. Done to perfection with plenty of flavour. Service was attentive without being over powering. Not cheap, but not as expensive as some of the competition and well worth the price. Restaurant was nice, well maintained with stylish decor. Highly recommend this establishment!

If you like greasy food come here!

By Katie L |

Food is swimming in grease, oil and butter. The chips were spoilt with the amount of grease and also the prawns were swimming in it too. The food is good and friendly service they just need to use less oil, butter and fat on their food. It is quite unhealthy.

Best BBQ Ribs/Chicken in Town; Great Bar; Good Service; Well Priced

By SuperChief49 |

Went twice this week as it was so good. Monday-Thursday dinner specials offered at $23 including 1 cocktail, Cole slaw, and potato. Superbly prepared BBQ ribs not good up or meat falling off the bone. Nicely crafted cocktails; good beer selection. Two bars-one in back overlooking Chicago River. Good location in tony Streeterville near Navy Pier and top line hotels; much better than former location and building As I just moved back to this 'hood, very comfortable to eat solo-at bar, or, at booths. The manager, Alex, is very hands-on and involved.

Amazing food!

A couple of my friends love Carson's and we went twice during a recent trip. I had the ribs, steak & cake, and the bread... Oh, the bread is so good. Fantastic service made both experiences great. Would definitely recommend!

Bring your appetite, HUGE portions! Quiet, private, upscale venue. Bring your wallet too!

By michiganpete7 |

The ambiance reminds me of the movie Goodfellas, as that's who I expected to see seated at many of the private booths located throughout. The motif is a nod to decades of Chicago sports and entertainment. But in truth the place looks like the walls could tell a thousand secrets! With that said, we dined here with another couple for dinner. Reservations suggested. I'll start by saying the service was top notch! Our waiter was obviously a pro, never pushy, but always present when needed. He was knowledgable on the entrees and anticipated our needs. Never ran out of water! That alone allows you to enjoy a private night out without feeling like their only goal is to turn the table. Their entrees were absolutely enormous! Plan on taking a bag home, unless you wish to impress your date or cardiologist by polishing it all off in one sitting. The food was delicious too. Everyone at our table got something different: Steak, Pork Chops, Kebab and Chicken, and it was fun to sample for the different flavors. Their homemade BBQ sauce is also delicious and liberally applied to their meat. Skip dessert (who has room?). Would I eat here again? That depends. I'm sure it has its loyal locals, but there are so many other wonderful restaurants in Chicago to try.

Great Food!!!

By sjbryant83 |

Every year we are in town we have to eat at Carson's this year I had a 1/2 rack of ribs and a filet, first time with the filet and it was one of the best I had ever had, and of course with the side of there famous cheese potatoes and the best coleslaw ever, my husband went for his usual the ribs, new location is beautiful, we sit at the bar and ate, definitely will be back next time in town.

Same classic Chicago BBQ,great new location

By lennychicago |

I have always been fond of this space, especially the back room and bar on the river. Dean Carson doesn't miss a beat in the new locations kitchen, that's why you come to this white tablecloth BBQ restaurant-for the food! The service can be just a bit off but go with the flow, it all comes together. If BBQ isn't your thing they can prepare food in different styles including of course Greek.

Rib Tips! Fire!

I like having a big family dinner here. Affordable and has everything for everyone. I always liked rib tips for fats and cartilage.

First Class Everything!!!

By Jon Meyer |

From the service to the ambiance to the excellent food, Carson’s was perfect. Tori was an awesome server with lots of personal experience with the menu. The location was great, as it is just adjacent to the Freedom Boat Club slips. Everything was great!!!

Quiet dinner

By C-lazy-S |

Was in town for business, and had a free evening. Made a reservation, but it was a weekday evening, so the restaurant was fairly quiet. Sat at the bar, service was very good. Had the full rack of ribs and the greek potatoes, great flavor.

Very good and nice place in Chicago to eat

Mouthwatering BBQ

By TravelChic4469 |

Caesar salad is probably the best ever had, beef brisket sandwich was hearty and tender, bread - warm and delicious. Ribs were excellent and more than expected. Love the new location and its brighter “look”.

Late night surprise

By Stephanie D |

We finished the 8:15pm Chicago River Cruise which was awesome. The restaurants at the Navy Pier were preparing to close & didn’t seem interested in new customers. We started walking toward Michigan Ave. We stumbled on this spot and we were warmly welcomed by the manager & then had a great server. The ribs & Mediterranean chicken were both excellent.

Meat, meat & meat

By alexanderschober |

I tried the Sample dish with three meat types. Amazing. Great sauce, soft meat, super side dishes, local brews and a great river view. A „must try“ place.

Great food

By Joann B |

We have visited this restaurant for over 30 years when we lived in Chicago. Now when we came back for a visit, had to come back. Food is still excellent with friendly, helpful servers. Been in business since 1930. Best Ribs ever. Their garbage salad is a meal in itself.

Anniversary

By Claudezzy84 |

What a wonderful way to celebrate my anniversary. The location was easy to navigate and there is a $10 3 hr parking garage (Parkview Garage 456 E Illinois ) directly across the street which they validate for you. The ambiance is so beautiful, the food tasted so amazing and the customer service was outstanding. We had a knowledgeable and very attentive waiter Fernando who made our experience so much better. We started with two Manhattans which tasted great and help set the mood. We had mediterrean Shrimp as an appetizer and cornbread which was excellent and for our entree we shared the sampler which consisted of 1/2 slab ribs, quarter chicken and a very delicious tender pork chop. We were offered 2 glasses of champagne for our anniversary but we respectfully declined (not big fans of champagne) and for dessert they gave us a brownie/ice cream cake on the house which was very sweet of them and tasted great. At the end everything came out to be about $100 but for the location (Near Navy Pier) and the generous portions of food with two cocktails and a reasonable parking fee, you really can't complain. Thank you for making our anniversary memorable and so special. Highly recommend this place. We will definately come back.

Absolute Perfection

By Rick |

Lots of steak restaurants to choose from but only Carson’s for steak and barbecue! Unbeatable food at prices that are reasonable. Truly remarkable service from our waiter, Dalton. It would be difficult to make a wrong choice from their menu. The ribs were amazing, the brisket sandwich was perfect and the BBQ chicken was exceptional! We enjoyed a brief conversation with Nancy, the manager on duty. I can’t wait to return to try their other dishes.

Great meal at a reasonable price!

By Rosebud |

We had a very nice dinner looking out at the water in this very nice restaurant. The food was more than good and the prices were not out of site. The pork chops were excellent and the service quite attentive. Would recommend without reservation.

Meh...

By Jennie P |

Carson 's was conveniently located to our hotel and offered a nice ambiance. Our server Brittany was very cordial and attentive. The food however, was nothing special. I had a half rack and my grand daughter the pulled pork sandwich. I will preface as being a bit of a BBQ snob and found the meats very dry. It was somewhat tasty but I asked for extra sauce. The coleslaw was interesting, the rest average at most.

Surprise surprise

By KJ W |

This restaurant was an excellent recommendation. It’s in the heart of the loop on the riverfront. The bartenders where attentive and welcoming. In a city with tons of places to eat this one was really good. I had an Old Fashioned to start my meal. Followed by a shrimp appetizer. Then I followed that with a filet and ribs combo with mashed potatoes. It was all so delicious. You can tell they take pride in the food the cook and the friendship formed with guest.

Go early if you want prime rib

By St_Albans_City |

I'm a big prime rib fan, and this was just around the corner from my hotel, so i bowled up on my first evening, fresh off the plane from London I asked for the prime rib but was told it had all gone, but there was one portion of the prime rib sandwich left, so I ordered that. two minutes later the waitress came back and said someone had beaten me to it. So I had the chop instead, which was huge, and very tender The next evening I went much earlier and asked at reception if there was any prime rib left. Told there was, I said I'd come in if I could definitely have it. Turned out they only meant the sandwich. I could have done without the bread, and there was much less beef than I was expecting, but it was very tender, with good jus, and very good value at $27

Friendly service and reasonably priced dinner

By Robert C |

I'm in a desperate search for a "real" restaurant -- NOT A FOOD COURT -- to eat at before Shakespeare at Navy Pier. Both sit down restaurants on the Pier have now closed, leaving me with the option for pizza, bar food, or a very mediocre and overpriced new restaurant in the hotel. I decided on Carson's because it's only a five minute walk to Navy Pier. The menu is relatively safe and service was quite personable. Nothing too exiting going on, but the chargrilled pork chop was quite good and very reasonably priced. They do like to include the coleslaw as one of your sides and I'm not a fan. I'd much rather have some sort of potato and vegetable as my sides. Nonetheless, in nicer weather, this turned out to be a good alternative to the dearth of dining on the Pier. Have no idea if anything will open soon in the space vacated by both Buba Gump and Riva.

Delicious night-club food!!

By Mary Jo A |

This restaurant moved awhile ago after many years, but the food and pricing remained superb and reasonable!! The atmospere is very nice, and the service is great! Just classic delicious meats, potato choices, and salad, dressings, or cole slaw, and the best--Key Lime Pie! It is my favorite restaurant in Chicago!

Used to be great

By ricardogaray |

This restaurant used to be great but not so much anymore. I can feel the end near. Definitely the end for me. I used to visit the older location and the food and service was expected of a top steak joint with Chicago history. Took my wife there for dinner recently as part of a night out. Was really looking forward to it since I have not been to the newer location near Navy Pier. Wow was I disappointed. I was there at about 5pm on May 11th. Ordered a steak medium and my wife ordered a fillet medium well. Both of our steaks came out over cooked. I wanted this to be right so I cut a few pieces hoping that the further I cut the better the steak would get but no luck. Brought it to the attention of the waitress, she really could care less. Told us to cut into the center instead of the few cuts we already made...all I could think to myself was so I must have ordered a medium steak that was only medium in the center right? Sounded like a very odd request from a place that should know steaks. I cut the center and it was obviously over cooked. She then just said let me get a manager, no other concern or help offered to make it right. All I wanted was a steak cooked close to right. It gets better...you see her go over to the manager have a quick conversation and then the manager comes over and asks to see our steaks. He says oh yeah that is right, how did you want it cooked, medium oh yea that’s medium. I pointed out that there is no way that it is medium, after all it was not my first steak. He looked at my wife’s and said the same. I asked if they can remake them at the right temperature, it’s what any great restaurant would do, he said they are just going to come out the same. My wife finally gave up and said she couldn’t eat hers, I don’t blame her, it was not edible at all. I ate half of mine and just gave up in the middle. Wow I was so disappointed, was looking forward to this. Should have went to Ruth Chris as I started to do originally before I reserved Carson’s. What a disappointing start to our night out. The manager then closed es by and scrapes off the fillet from my wife’s plate and walks toward the pos unit where our waitress was at. It was very clear that they were having a conversation about our table and they seemed more then eager not to help us. Not sure what was going on here but if you are expecting great dinning food or service then I would suggest skipping this restaurant. There are way too many great steak options in Chicago to waste the day here especially a date night.

Nice size portions!

By hammers1856 |

Very allergy knowledgeable and helpful. Barbecue is all made on site and delicious. Really enjoyed the corn bread and potato options from the fries, Au gratin potatoes, twice baked potatoes, fingerling potatoes.

Loved it !

We paid this restaurant two visits during our recent trip to Chicago. The first time was based on a recommendation from our concierge, the second was because the first time was so good ! Rbs were what we came for and we weren't disappointed !

Great meal, great service and a great view

By BuffaloJoe |

Our experience at Carson's was outstanding. The staff was very pleasant and we were seated quickly in a table near the window overlooking the river. Our waitress was great and made several recommendations for us and was also very helpful in getting us some insight into another activity that we had planned for the evening. The food was great, as expected and the portions were very generous. The ribs were tender and moist and fell off the bone. Our salads, sides and desert were prepared and seasoned well. We had a very nice visit and will definitely go back for our next visit.

Nice!!

By Rich P |

Recommended by multiple friends on occasion of a one-day visit to Chicago. We chose for an early weekday dinner. Light crowd when we arrived earlier than reservation ensured that we were seated immediately. Between the three of us we chose the BBQ combo and ribs with double baked au gratin potatoes and cole slaw as sides. Generous servings. Everything was great and the pork chop exceptionally moist and flavorful! Competent server was a bit brusque but efficient without being intrusive. Highly recommend.

Delicious food, great service

By NurseAllie77 |

The food was delicious. The ribs are nice and caramelized on top. No sauce needed . Now the au gratin potatoes? Probably the best potatoes I’ve ever eaten. The crusty cheese top is to die for. French onion soup was good too .

Let’s put it this way...we were in town for 4 days and we ate there 3 nights in a row! Each night we enjoyed a different meal prepared to perfection! Steak, Ribs, Chicken! Great service too. Can’t wait to go back!

An "Off the Cuff" Pick for a Dinner for Seven: Heaven!

By Cynthia C |

No reservations, no problem. We were offered a table which had to be cleared for a later reservation, but we never felt rushed. When they say that their coleslaw is the best, I concur. We never got to try the cornbread, but we hope that there will be another trip on our future. The meal was fabulous! My husband and I split the bone-in Ribeye. It had great flavor and was cooked to perfection. The family ordered a taste of the menu and no one was disappointed.Normally I don't order dessert, but my husband wanted to try the Tiramisu. Not my favorite, but their version was! Now I am scared to order it at a another restaurant. I wanted to go back for more of everything the next night. Sadly, we went elsewhere.

My girlfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary here tonight and it was outstanding! A huge shout out to our Server Dan! Amazing service, he gave us brilliant recommendations and he was without a doubt a joy to have. He even gave me and my girlfriend a Happy Anniversary dessert on the house. Thank you for making this Anniversary one to remember!

if you love great food and good ribs

By John S |

I was at a recent professional convention in downtown Chicago. We tried carson's and tripped over the bar specials on accident. What a lovely surprise. Special priced entry's at the bar (during or not during happy hour). A Crab cake, two half racks of ribs and four drinks for less than $60, and the food and staff we delightful. All so good we went back the next night for a regular table dinner with friends and again had a wonderful time - good food - excellent friendly staff - a very positive experience.

Party

By Joseph P |

The staff at Carson's is second to none for hosting a party. They go out of their way to make you feel like family and will accommodate almost anything you need to make your event special. I would not hesitate to recommend Carson's for a party or to have dinner or meet friends for a drink. You will not be disappointed!!

Best BBQ ever!

If you love BBQ, this is a must stop while in Chicago. The ribs were melt in your mouth worthy and the chopped salad was one of !

ZERO customer service and No Frills

By peabodymac |

Awful. Carson's is no longer the fabulous place it once was. First of all, customer service DOES NOT EXIST! Too forever to even place an order, despite the fact that restaurant was only 25% full. BTW it is also very hard to even find the restaurant which is in a terrible location on east Illinois St. Once order was placed - salad and full slab of ribs - we announced that we were splitting the items. Salad arrived first - but the kitchen did not split the order for us AND we had to ask for plates. Ribs arrived - again not split and No extra plates. We were informed the potatoes gratin were very hot but NO SPOON was provided. Asked for one - never came and would have asked again but 10 minutes later we never ever saw anyone. Finally got the host to help us and eventually 2 little teaspoons were brought to us??!!! Also NO COLE SLAW. Again when we asked where it was we were told it would cost $4 extra. Ditto for the fact that there is NO BREAD or Rolls - also $5 extra. No more free chopped liver. Carsons is now a NO Frills restaurant with zero customer service. Also waited and had to ask twice to get the check! We can only imagine how much worse even the customer service would be had the restaurant been even half full, let alone 75% full. I cannot recommend going to Carson's - what was once a beloved institution. BTW - ribs and salad prices are quoted as different amounts depending on whether you look at the To GO printed menu - or the menu in the restaurant. And ribs, though good, are not cheap or plentiful - $26 or $27 depending on which menu you look at and approx 12 ribs. Also NO WiFi.

Excellent Service Paired with Great Food

By Nolads |

We live in the neighborhood and finally tried Carson's - the meal exceeded our expectations! First, Grant our server is outstanding. He knows the menu, the bar and the restaurant. Each dish we ordered was very well prepared and there is enough variety to satisfy most every diner. The Mediterranean shrimp is a meal in itself and the ribs live up to the reputation - excellent. This is a great place to go as a couple or with a group. We will definitely be back!

As good as ever

By Mike B |

Been going to Carsons since the 80’s. New location on Illinois is phenomenal. I had a NY and it didn’t disappoint. My wife had a pork chop that was out of this world. Definitely a must do whe we are in Chicago. Service was great too. Very friendly

Drinks and appetizers

By Joseph P |

The food is so good here from the burgers to the ribs to the prime rib, that you can't go wrong. Sometimes I just go to the back bar and order some appetizers with a nice glass of wine and enjoy the view of the river. On a nice day they will open the windows as an extra treat.
