Beautiful surroundings, friendly service, acceptable dishes

By Netster11 |

The outdoor seating area is wonderful, the surrounding gardens, succulents and architecture are very pretty and atmospheric. Lovely lively vibes. The service was efficient and friendly. The food was hit and miss. The fish tacos were bland but the shrimp ceviche was flavourful and fresh.

Mexican atmosphere

By stef78suns |

An atmosphere and a restaurant as if we were in Mexico! For the meal we took "COMBINATIONS DE REYES" with 3 meats, pork tacos, crispy beef tacos and chicken enchiladas, with a draft beer for 2 because we weren't very hungry and that was enough for us. It was good, not excellent but good. We went to this restaurant for the ambiance and atmosphere. The servers are top notch. If you pass by, come and try it for the place and the atmosphere.

Marathon Dinner

By Russ M |

After cheering on a runner at the 2019 Rock and Roll Marathon we decided on dinner in Old Town San Diego. We chose Casa De Reyes and it was a good choice. The food was great the drinks are good and the music provided by a grooup on the small stage set the attitude for the night. The 9 month old girl with us definitely enjoyed the rhythms throughout our dinner. The service is great and the servers are very attentive even with a large group of customers there that night. Definitely a place to keep in mind when in San Diego especially on a Sunday when the group is playing.

Very fine Mexican food in historic old town San Diego.

By TerryCalvani |

Why review a Mexican restuarant in a tourist venue? Because Casa de Reyes is different. It is not fine Mexican dining like Dulce Patria (in Polanco) or housed in a beautiful building like San Angel Inn (also in DF) nor does it focus on a particular Mexican cuisine like Casa Oaxaca (in that city), but it does a superb job in providing first class Mexican food with dishes that would be familar to San Diego visitors. When we entered the restuarant, we anticipated that we would have a nice Mexico lunch if we were lucky. But it was excellent. I ordered the posole as a appetizer, and found that it was better than what we make at home. A confession I don't want to make. The tostadas (chips) appeared to be home made and fresh. The kitchen presented the food in a very visually pleasing and enticing manner. The tomale masa was course which we prefer over that found in Chiapas and other southern states. I rate Casa de Reyes a "5" because it delivered an excellent Mexican lunch.

Well worth the wait!

By Greg G |

Although we waited for a table for nearly an hour (expected) - once we were seated, the food and service was excellent! Certainly some of the best Mexican food we've encountered and the overall atmosphere and experience were truly wonderful. There are plenty of shops around the patio to enjoy while on the wait list, and the cellphone paging system made that so much easier. As a life-long connoisseur of Mexican foods, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, as did everyone in our group! The house-made corn tortillas were unusually flavorful, which added to the overall tastiness of the various enchiladas. I particularly enjoyed the multiple selection of different meats and sauces offered on the combination plates - a selection matrix beyond most of the Mexican restaurants I have visited. Casa de Reyes is certainly my choice for Mexican foods in the Old Town complex!

Amazing atmosphere

We thought the food was good but the atmosphere was amazing! We recommend you ask for the hot.salsa and add it to the table salsa it adds a ton of flavor!

Fun, outdoor setting!

By Karen Y |

Had a fun night at this restaurant! Our server, Eddie, was great! They have a large menu, heaters when it gets cool outside and delicious drinks by the glass or pitcher.

5 ⭐️ atmosphere, 3 ⭐️ food.

By Monica E |

Coming from Texas. We also know good Mexican food. I was not impressed by the taste, quality or portions. I think people go more for the ambience than the actual quality of the food which is understandable. Give it a try. To each their own.

Always delicious!

By blackmarble1j |

In a world of bad Mexican food this place saves the day! Been here many times with my wife and each time it's been perfect. Like the title of this review... "Absolutely delicious"

Extremely Disappointing

By Rexflash |

Although we were regular diners there before Covid, we won't return and do not recommend this to anyone. Three of us had lunch on a Saturday. Seating was prompt and the outdoor seating is very inviting. However, the food was very subpar, even by tourist destination standards. One member had the veggie fajitas. Served with only two tortillas, the veggies were bland, overcooked and mushy. One member had the mahi tostada. Very small tostada and the fish was like frozen fish fingers. Dry and tasteless. I had a combination with a chicken enchilada and beef taco. The chicken was dry and tasteless. The taco was okay. All three plates came with rice and beans. Both were flavorless. With a tip, an iced tea, one Margarita and a offensive 4% 'surcharge' the bill was $101. Outrageous for very poor quality food.

Nice ambiance

We stopped by for dinner while visiting old town san diego. It has a great ambiance. The food was good with a large serving size. Will certainly consider visit again.

In the heart of Old Town Park.

Decided to spend part of our day in Old Town San Diego and of course, we ended up being there at lunch time. We were a little undecided on where to eat for lunch so we picked Casa de Reyes instead of going down the street to hit the other touristy places. Our group of 4 were seated quickly. Our waiter was quick to arrive and ask for drink orders. Chips and salsa arrived quickly as well. My wife and I ordered enchiladas and a chicken burrito. They were ok but lacked a little spice. Red sauce on top of the burrito wasn’t spicy and my option to spice it up was for them to add habanero (too bad they didn’t have red or green chile). In retrospect, I should have ordered something else as the burrito had black beans in it and then pinto beans on the side. Rice was ok and had peas, beans, and corn in it. Service was good with our waiter returning at good intervals. Overall, price was a bit high and then there was the automatic 4% surcharge added for your table. Why not just raise prices? For what we paid I would have liked a bit more flavor. The homemade tortillas were tasty though.

This place is way over priced!

By My3Joyz |

This place is way over priced! We didn’t have a big meal because that’s not what we wanted at the time. We had 2 small soups, 3 kid quesadillas and 2 side of fries and it was $60! We didn’t order any drinks, other than water. The fries came out cold and the quesadillas had cheddar cheese in them (what happened to quesadilla cheese?!) Thjsbis supposed to be an authentic Mexican restaurant! We also had to wait forever to get service and a bill at the end. We will definitely not be coming back here again.

Need a tex mex fix!

By terrycarlson2018 |

The location of this restaurant is really nice...the garden areas surround this restaurant are worth the trip alone...as well as some cute shops. The food is above average - our service was very good.

Fantastic Atmosphere!

By K3766RNjoannem |

VERY much enjoy visiting this place every time I come to San Diego. Lovely setting with great music and food. It can get a little loud but overall I love it here and will continue to come back.

Great for Mexican food

By Chewitt007 |

Great place to eat if you enjoy Mexican food. The atmosphere is great and the servers very friendly. They also have a live band playing music.

Food is poor Quality

By Kim D |

I've been to this restaurant a few times before. And the atmosphere on the service are wonderful. However, the quality of the food is not. I ordered a chicken burrito and the quality was so bad, I really couldn't eat it. Instead of being shredded chicken with flavor to it , it was nasty little chunks of dark meat that tasted horrible. The flower tortilla it was wrapped in was thick, gooey and chewy--not nice. And even as circumspect about ordering as I was, that's the only thing I ordered, no drinks or anything, it was still close to $30 when you include the tax and the tip. Definitely not worth it.

An excellent choice when visiting San Diego

By yyc755 |

My wife and I had dinner at Casa de Reyes during our visit to San Diego and were greeted with live Mexican music. The ambience resembles an old hacienda including the attire of all servers. The food was quite good and the service was impeccable, without mentioning that its location in Old Town San Diego is an open invitation to take a stroll and see the numerous gifts the shops have to offer. We will be delighted to visit again someday !!!

Great food in a wonderful atmosphere

By drjohnScottsdale |

You will feel as if you’ve been to Mexico at Casa de Reyes. There is live music and a beautifully decorated courtyard area with many tables. The food and service were great. It is a little difficult to know where the entrance is, as there seem to be multiple places to enter because it is made to appear like a Mexican village. The chips and salsa are really good. The tacos and enchiladas were fresh and tasty.

Flavorful and fast

By Heliotropa |

I usually prefer hole-in-the-wall places for Mexican food, but Casa de Reyes was close to our hotel so off we went. My husband greatly enjoyed his tacos and my puerco in chile verde was tender and flavorful. Definitely priced for San Diego tourists but a respectable option if you're staying nearby.

Great

By Mike E |

Margaritas are great. Food very good. The historic location is priceless. Enjoy this location for authentic Mexican cuisine.

Food was good, service was not so!

By Nancy P |

We arrived and the hostesses were not very pleasant. When we were "buzzed" when our table was ready, we headed back and were seated. It took quite some time for the waitress to come to the table, bring silverware, plates, etc.... When we needed the check, it was difficult to get that too. We shared an appetizer platter and the waitress never came to check on us - to see if we needed anything else or to ask how the food was. I would go back but the service is just not good.

Glad we didn’t dine here; best part was that our server did not pressure us to order and allowed us to linger

By Wanderlassie |

The menu did not look particularly enticing and entrees seemed pricey. We settled on a pitcher of beer that we shared and just ate the chips and salsa provided . Even so, with tip we paid $25.03.

I wish it was better.

By JohnnyPicklez |

Stopped in for lunch.. Not crowded at all and they sat us quickly and had us sanitize and wear a mask... which I appreciated. We sat and it took a min to get the chips and a server... this gave us time to know what we wanted... We both ordered 2 taco combos.... (like the easiest thing to make on the menu).... and we had to ask our server twice what was taking so long... we finally said if its not here in 5 min we are leaving. 2 min later the food showed up... a total of 30 min since we ordered... the tacos were actually really good... the rice and beans were bland... but for lunch ok... We were waiting for the check and I finally had to get up and go find the server to get the bill... when I was there I see a sign that says they are charging 4% extra for "unprecedented times".... But the sing was on the servers station... Normally they bring you the check and no guest would ever see this sign.... in fact I sort of felt that was the intent... I was disappointed because I have amazing memories of when this was casa de pico when I was a kid... I guess ill just stick to casa de Guadalajara across the street.

AMAZING!

This restaurant was amazing! Best meal I've had all week in San Diego! Everything our party ordered was delicious!

A Fiesta in your Mouth

Beautiful Patio dining, attentive staff, good selections on the menu, entertainment on the stage and good food. Overall enjoyable lunch.

Nice Margarita and Pozole Soup

By Jennifer A |

I came here with my mother probably 35 years ago and saw the first outdoor heater. It was a trip down memory lane. Had a nice cup of soup and a Margarita.

Not impressed

By foxwire |

The worst ceviche I've ever had. How can you mess up ceviche? It was not at all fresh, no citrus/acid (that's what you use to make ceviche) and overall unpalatable. So then we tried the guacamole. Again, how can you mess up guacamole? Well this place did. It was either previously frozen, or it was made from a powedered mix. There was water sitting at the bottom of the bowl.Very disappointing!

Ultimate Margarita!

By Cynthia H |

The atmosphere is festive year round, but we especially enjoy Christmas time at the Bazaar Del Mundo. If the waiting line is too long, walk up to the bar and enjoy the best margarita "The Ultimate Revolutionary" - perfection!

Still my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Diego

By socaljkb |

Delicious authentic Mexican food served in an outdoor venue. The restaurant is surrounded by colorful shops and often has live music. Servers are dressed in brightly colored garments and you feel like you are in Mexico. The menu has a good selection of items and the margaritas are great! This has become a favorite of many of my out of town visitors, so we visit often. It never disappoints.

Lackluster

By Jen R |

Terrible service. The employees just look and stare at you like they’re waiting for someone else to handle you. After waiting more than 15 minutes a server came to help a table next to us that arrived way after we did. I’m not sure if it was based on how we looked or just lack of quality control but out of all the Mexican food restaurants to try I would avoid this one. Unless you like paying an extra 4% service fee that they add to all checks only to receive subpar service.

Colorful and entertaining

By Ellen H |

The foods always yummy and it seems like the best location and atmosphere in old town. We can't help returning here all the time. The service was a little slow but getting someones attention easy. Large variety of items to order.

Good food, large portions!

By Anthony D |

We stopped here for lunch while visiting the Old Town historic park ( also excellent; take the free tour!). Three of us had a variety of dishes. All were very good and the servings were so large that none of us could finish and we didn’t need much else to eat that day. Pricing was surprisingly reasonable too give the location. Would definitely visit again

Great atmosphere and good food

By TandLseeingtheworld |

This is our go-to for Mexican food in San Diego. The food is always good and is reasonably priced. Despite being busy most of the time, we have always been able to find a table with a short wait or no wait time at all. Menu is large and the servers always seem to be willing to suggest slight deviations/variations from the menu. I would guess we've eaten here a dozen plus times, and will keep going back.

Nice old town in San Diego

By Giuliano D |

Quaint place in the old town of San Diego. We eat Mexican food, good and plentiful. High price (like all US venues in this period)

Best food

By Frankie F |

Great food Great margaritas Great staff Great location Go, you won’t regret it…..unless you have too many margaritas!

Amazing Mexican Food

By Ktflow |

Was looking for dinner but didn't realize how close , inside actually, of Old Town. Apparently everyone else had the same idea as there was a long line. Luckily, they take your cell number and will text when it's ready. That gives you time to go explore Old Town while you wait. The crispy tacos was the best shell I've ever eaten, seemed very authentic. Portions were a good size and of course plenty of chips and salsa. Spicy salsa was all spice but no flavor. Normal salsa was just fine. Did not get margaritas but they were huge. Definitely a solid choice

Great restaurant in old town

By Frank R |

We always go to Casa de Reyes while in San Diego, love the live music and atmosphere along with the dishes, I found a vegetable on my plate I wasn't familiar with and ask what is was, come to fine out it was a watermelon redish white on the outside pink or reddish on the inside it's part if the daikon family. Excellent service and meals as always, Frank

Best People & Great Vibes

By Kayleigh S |

They have FRESH tortilla chips, tortillas and corn tortillas. And i mean FRESH - you can watch them make it right outside the restaurant! This was a beautiful location, the staff was SO friendly and helpful - and i mean it. I left my bag there, didn’t realize until 10:30pm (after they closed), called them (and they answered!!) and they let me stop by and grab my bag. 10/10 service and I will DEFINITELY be going back, not just for the amazing, life changing food, but for the good people who work there.

Good...and not so good

By MilMascaras |

You can't beat the atmosphere of this place. Live music nearby and folks shopping in the little stores that surround the restaurant - everyone's having a great time. The entire plaza just puts a smile on your face. My wife and I visited last weekend and we hadn't been there for a couple of years so we were really looking forward to our visit. There were tons of people waiting for a table and we were told it would be about a 35-minute wait for a table. It actually only took about 15 minutes for them to call us which was great. The area we sat at was set up for parties of 2 and the tables were really squeezed together, in fact, my wife and I both had trouble getting in and out of our seats everything was so tight - and we aren't large people! My wife ordered fajitas and they were really good (I tried them). As for my meal, I can only offer this advice - do not order a combination plate! My meal tasted as if it had been prepared the day before and sat under heat lamps the entire time. With the volume this establish does each day, I can sort of see that they want to get a jump on pre-preparing orders, but my food was a little too extreme in that sense. Next time, I'll order one of the specialty items or fajitas or anything that will likely be freshly prepared. My wife did enjoy her fajitas and doggone it - even with my lousy meal, I still had a good time.

Good food,ambiance,and service

Spent two evenings at Fiesta De Reyes it was so great. Decorated for Christmas was beautiful. Love the patio dining with heaters everywhere. Great service and food delicious.

Terrific Mexican Restaurant, lively vibe, in Old Town

By SteveInAtlantaGa |

We choose this place after looking online, and it was the best restaurant we visited in San Diego. There was quite a line at the entrance when we checked in, but there were only two of us in our party so we were seated right away. There is a full bar as well as full menu of traditional Mexican food. I got chicken fajitas and a Margarita (there is a large menu of specialty margaritas.) There were only two tortillas with the fajitas, which seemed light, but was fine. The food was very good and the restaurant has lots of character and excitement to it. The server was sometimes slow to get to us, but it was also super busy.

Great atmosphere, Expensive Mediocre Food

By VancouverAngiez |

If you want great atmosphere, expensive drinks and that’s it, this is the place for you but the food is overpriced and average at best. Blandest sizzling beef fajitas and stuffed shrimp, and the beans and rice sides were blah too. They brought us free chips but when we got the bill, they had charged us for the salsa. Two entrees before tax and tip was $48.00 for lunch. We felt so ripped off.

Amazing food with an incredible atmosphere

By HeatherB029281 |

Came here with party of 5 while on vacation to se ent navy daughter. How beautiful! Only place I’ve saw like this is at Epcot in Florida. The fake Mexico pavilion. The food was great! Live music. Outdoor heaters, beautifully decorated!!!! Loved the little shops surrounding the restaurant! If I lived closer this would be an all the time restaurant for us!!!

Snack time

By Tracy P |

Stopped here while exploring the historic park. Had to get a gigantic margarita. It was fantastic. We also enjoyed the queso fundido. It's scrumptious! Our server was Geronimo and he was awesome. We would definitely recommend and will return to try more from their menu.

Bland, bland, bland

By Conni M |

I'm writing this review only 3 hours after eating at this restaurant. I've lived in San Diego my whole life. I decided to treat my daughter to some Mexican food and I chose this place, because years ago, there were several really good restaurants here. Our Server was EXCELLENT. I wish i had gotten his name. But the food was not good. Very BLAND and greasy. The chips were so oily, we didn't eat any after the first one. The salsa tasted just like a bowl of tomato. No flavor, no spice, no heat. My Chicken Tortilla soup was awful. It was greasy, with no flavor after the first bite. If it had cilantro in it, I could see or taste it. I counted 3 little tortilla strips floating on top of the soup. Very little cheese. My daughter had the Chile Relleno with beans and rice. Forget the rice. Neither of us ate it. No flavor, dry and tasteless. She said the Chile Relleno was okay. But it was hard to cut, since the Chile was tough on the bottom side. We suspect it was made ahead and frozen. It just wasn't fresh tasting. My daughter should know, since she has made them herself. The beans were the best. Too bad I didn't just order beans and a flour tortilla. Anyway, I am sorry to be so hard on this place. But it was a waste of $42.00, in my opinion. The $8.00 tip was deserved by the server. He was friendly, and he wasn't responsible for the substandard food.

4% Restaurant "Service Charge"

By LFN |

I've come here for years when in San Diego. Atmosphere is great, service was just okay and food was good, my husband had the chicken burrito and I had the chicken tostada salad, which was tasty. Automatic 4% restaurant "service charge", really? I was told it was because they don't want to re-print their menus when food prices go up. What? Will not go back because of this service charge.

Excellent atmosphere, food, service, reasonable prices.

By utahartist |

We enjoyed our food and experience at Casa De Reyes, that we ate one meal there each day for our three day stay. Great food with good service. Meals are huge and very good.

Nice open air restaurant.

By TravelinMama4393 |

Nice open air restaurant. Ambiance is fantastic. Plenty of seating. Great service. Food was good. Located in the heart of Old Towne.

Awesome food and many gluten free options!

By Angela G |

The staff was knowledgeable and reviewed the menu with me, assuring me my dietary need would be noted and discussed with the kitchen. I ordered a combination platter (enchilada and soft corn taco) which was great. Chips are air fried and are terrific. To be sure, I tested the food with my Nima GF testing device. Everything came up “no gluten” and I had no symptoms. Very tasty - I will definitely return!

HUGE portions of tasty Mexican delights

By Vernon E |

Was there with a group of 30 for a "family style" meal. There was more food that our party could eat for two meals. The service was good and all the staff was helpful and friendly.

Good meal and service

By Dennis B |

Nice lunch outdoors in sunny Old Town San Diego. House margarita and shredded beef enchiladas were delicious. Only complaints are the hostesses were both very rude and the tables were sticky/dirty. The service was very good. Be prepared to overspend, you're paying for convenience and location here.

Surprisingly Bland

By ImAlwaysAdventuring |

Casa de Reyes is a beautifully decorated open air restaurant in Old Town Historical Park in San Diego. Since we are in the COViD era, they have a lot of precautions in place to ensure safety and cleanliness. We visited on a Thursday afternoon, and there weren’t too many people. When we checked in at the hostess station, we were told it would be a 15 minute wait. Considering all of the new rules in effect, wait time is pretty standard. Luckily there are quite a few shops in and around the area, so the time passed quickly. Once we were seated at our table, the waitress was friendly and took our order quickly. Our food came out pretty quickly as well. Visually, everything looked amazing. Flavor... that’s another story. My enchiladas were a little bland. I was hoping for a little something more, especially since the restaurant is one of the centerpieces of old town. The food didn’t taste bad, it just wasn’t wow-worthy. One of the other issues I had was the price. Unfortunately, I suppose that’s the price you pay in San Diego, but I was a little taken aback. Also, there is a COVID fee that’s tacked on as well. So, depending on how much your bill is (not the amount of people that are dining), your bill can get pricey, fast. I definitely wouldn’t mind trying this place again, but with the selection in SD, it’s going to be awhile.

Not Tex Mex But Very Good!

By Darlene H |

Since we’re native Texans, we are used to very good Mexican food and this certainly didn’t disappoint! Out first stop in San Diego after arriving on an 8:00am flight was Old Town which was very close to our hotel. We had a light breakfast, browsed the shops and had a wonderful lunch at Casa DeReys! We shared an order of three beef tacos (huge) with refried beans and Spanish rice. I think they are on flour tortillas, not corn. The chips and salsa were very good even though I prefer Pico de Gallo. The service was rather slow even though we beat the lunch rush, but we weren’t in any hurry. The restaurant offers a large beautiful outdoor setting with big umbrellas for shade.

Favourite dining - Mexican food

By AB_Travel |

Another of my favourite places to visit. The dining is all outdoors but they have umbrellas to shield from the sun and propane heaters to maintain the warmth. The service is friendly and efficient and the food is super delicious! We both ordered a combo plate. Loved it.

Venue is Great...Food is Average...Nice Time

By pmx2 |

You go here for the experience. This is a busy and funky place with outdoor seating in a small square. Lot's of noise and music. They do not take reservations so you put in your name and shop or listen to the band and have a cocktail. We had a group of 9 but they have lots of large tables. Our server was busy and very good. The guacamole starter was very good and the salsa with the chips had good flavor and spice. We had a variety of entrees that included fajitas, tostadas, chili relleno and salads. Servings were large and average to good in flavor and quality. Prices were reasonable. The largest item on our bill was the martguratis....of course. Had a good meal and a great time.

Good food friendly waiters

By hrslvr1954 |

On a recent trip to San Diego we went there for lunch. Delicious nachos and skinny Margaritas. Very friendly waitress and was serenaded by wonderful music!

Could not eat the food

By Paria P |

Tourist trap in my opinion. I’m usually very flexible with food and especially Mexican food. I rarely return food. I could not eat my food. The chicken tastes like unflavored bland meat. They were nice they took it back, and brought me veggie taco (I asked for). I forced myself to eat some, after the 45 minute wait. The margaritas were ~$15 and too sweet. The atmosphere was great.

Cilantro in everything!

By LTT |

I am allergic to cilantro and mint. Have eaten here before and had a good meal. This time the only thing I could have was a cheese quesadilla. No salsa...no guacamole..no meat....all pre-prepared with cilantro. Added sliced avocado but it's just not the same. I can fix this....and so much more....at home. Sad to say I won't be back.

Greasy fast "Mexican" food

By Ashley R |

Went for lunch with my husband and kids. The shops and atmosphere are really cool but we all regret eating here. Everything was very greasy, reminded us of Taco Bell... which I haven't ate since my broke college days, probably why we are all feeling like crap now. There are far better Mexican spots in San Diego.

Not a good Mexican restaurant

By Terry T |

Server was awesome but that is where the good stops. We had a family of 9 who have eaten there for years. The quesadilla cheese was not melted, cheese enchiladas had no taste, tamale masa was hard and not edible. The margaritas were good but Large and Medium were the same size but $2 more for large. The chips were not tasty and were stale. I honestly don’t think we will go back there again. There are many more great Mexican restaurants in old town and San Diego.

Covid surcharge

By mightytitus |

Ate dinner here June 6, 2021. Was surprised to see printed on their menu a notice that an automatic 4% “covid” surcharge would be added to dinner total. The restaurant was completely filled with customers. Tables were not spaced apart. It was business as usual. We asked our server if the restaurant was completely staffed at pre-covid levels or if they were still understaffed. He said they have been fully staffed for a while and that entire staff was vaccinated as well. Such a surcharge might seem reasonable during the pandemic, but is completely unjustified now. Atmosphere was fun and enjoyable as always. Service was good. Food was marginal at best.

Fun and Busy!

By surfercharlie |

My wife and I were looking forward to dining at this restaurant while visiting Old Town. When we arrived, there seemed to be a long waiting list, but they sat us right away. Everyone was friendly and service was great. The open air atmosphere is amazing. The live music and dancing is fun. The food is plentiful and reasonably priced. My only complaint was that the food was a bit bland and dry. Could definitely have used a bit more sauce on my enchiladas and maybe a little bit of spice, but everything else was terrific. We would definitely go back.

Good food but expensive

By Dan C |

We ate here during our family vacation to San Diego. There were eight of us and we were able to get right in. Nice atmosphere with outdoor seating. Large menu. I had the carnitas' plate and it was very good. We all enjoyed our lunch and our waitress was friendly and very business like. We were surprised at the bill when it came. There was a Covid 19 tax included and after we added the gratuity, the bill was almost $230? We only had tea and soda's, no alcohol. We thought that was a little excessive.

Good Lunch in Old Town

By Traveldanse |

The place is located in a great spot amongst the shopping in Old Town. Portions are generous, prices are comparable, food is good, service was good. I enjoyed it.

Recommend

By ScottlandMc |

We were recommended to this restaurant in old town. Sadly, it turned out very poorly. It was a Saturday night, we waited an hour and a half, which if everything was great, then that wouldn't be a problem for a 5 star restuarant. After being seated, another 20 minutes went by, no waiter. We had to ask the manager to take our order. They screwed up the drinks, brought out the appetizer with our meals. Thier excuse was since we ordered it with our meal, that's why it all came out together. Well, if we'd had service in the first place it wouldn't have been like that. So, after filling up on chips for an hour, waiting, we weren't that hungry. The food was mediocre, warm, not hot. My wife and child both ordered soup, me an enchilada and tamale which took them that long to serve. Nothing taken off bill. Very sad. Would I return, NO! and I don't recommend it for anyone else. 👎👎👎

Overall a great experience, good food good vibes.

By Shelby789 |

PROS: Great food Free basket of chips and salsa Affordably priced Strong margarita Nice and cheery vibes Love their uniform! CONS: For some reason, the staff kept bumping into the back of my chair though there was a good amount of walking space. Forgot silverware.

Great Lunch

By wheatonnitz |

My wife and I visited the Old Mission area and loved it for a second time. We missed this place last time, but will not miss it again. Great salsa, great food, and great drinks.

Great place with an outstanding atmosphere and SANGRIA!

By Gary G |

My cousins recommended we go here since we wanted MEXICAN! 8 of us met here and the atmosphere, service, food and drinks were above our expectations. We'd been visiting Southern California for the first time and wanted to sample as many Mexican and seafood restaurants as possible. I had the combination platter that included 2 tamales (my favorite) and an enchilada. All were tasty, well prepared...delicious. I also sampled some of my family's meals and each were as good as the next. Highly recommended!

Cool atmosphere, too expensive for what you get

By Steven H |

Casa de Reyes is located within Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego. When we went there was a lively energy and it was busy but we were able to get a seat right away. The restaurant offers some complimentary chips and salsa upon being seated. The service was prompt and friendly but the drinks and food were much too expensive for what you receive. The large margarita is pictured with my review and cost almost $18. That size margarita for $18 is not a good value and neither of us could really taste the tequila. The food was not bad tasting but, again, expensive for what you get. I give them three stars only for the service we received as well as the lively energy on the night we visited. Please note that this is an outdoor restaurant so on the odd occasions when San Diego receives inclement weather this wouldn’t be a good place to visit.

Mexican Food Experience

By C4Life |

We really liked this restaurant. Not sure if it was authentic Mexican food, but it tasted good too us. The staff was friendly enough. I wish they had sat us near the stage so we could see the performance while we ate. All seating is outside, so we switched to a shaded table. Information due to red dye food allergy, I couldn’t confidently find a Margarita but they have many to choose from. I had a disappointing experience eating tamales in LA so was pleasantly surprised with the pollo with tomatillo sauce tamale here- wished I had order more. It was the only thing they stood out, rest of food was still good and we love Mexican food so hard to disappoint. After eating, there are several shops around the restaurant and could hear the music and see performances. Since we were strongly advised not to go to Tijuana, we felt a little bit of the Mexico aura after our visit here.

Food, Service and Atmosphere all top notch

By Shaun&Mandy |

One of the Best places we dined at in San Diego. We will be coming again. The service was Amazing as was the food. If you are visiting Old Town make the time to eat here.

A must eat in Old Town

By ponceaaron88 |

No reservations, at least when we went it was first come first served. Hostess took our phone number and texted us when our table was ready. They were very kind even while being super busy with other guests. Our waitress was also very kind and tentative with us even while taking care of multiple table with big parties. Food was very flavorful and filling. Margaritas are a must try!

4% FOOD CHARGE ON TOP OF HIGH PRICES??? NO!!

By FRANKIE’S FOLKS |

We have been going to this place for awhile, we live about 100 miles north and stop in for lunch when we are in San Diego. The food is good, no issues, it is not over the moon, but it is a solid meal in a very nice setting. Yesterday, after lunch there, I just happened to look at the bill and see that there was a 4% surcharge. I couldn’t initially figure it out but then got home and did a little bit of research and realised doing the math that the food bill was getting a 4% charge on top of the basic price. I Googled online and saw the info that because of “COVID” they put a 4% charge and all their food and drinks. THIS IS A RIP-OFF!!! Not only is Covid long over and not only were businesses able to get financial assistance from the government, but the prices on the menu are already more than 4% above what I would pay anywhere else on town when I look at the size and quality of what I am receiving! The “LARGE” margarita, which came to $21 for a single margarita, yup you read that right, $21 after adding in still all the little hidden costs above the price on the menu, was about the size of an orange juice glass when you got right down to it. This is not value that I’m willing to pay for. It’s a nice place it’s a unique visit but just be aware it is not cheap and a 4% surcharge is just flat out gouging the customer. The only thing this is done is make me and the wife decide that we can spend a little bit of time and look around for other places to eat in San Diego!

Friendly staff but needs better lighting

By ramreist |

We went there on a recommendation from our Lyft driver. I got the shrimp dish wrapped in bacon and stuffed with crab. You can't taste the crap and the bacon was really tough/overdone. Usually, when you get bacon-wrapped shrimp a restaurant will cook it so it has a soft consistency like the shrimp. The side items were nice. I had a margarita and it needed more flavor. All the orders came out unbelievably quickly so I wonder if they make it ahead and rewarm it. The lighting was poor. The toilets were dirty and there was a man in there clearly not a customer doing something odd in there.

Great Service and Food

By zepned44 |

We had a wonderful experience at this Mexican restaurant. We had booked about 45 minutes before we arrived and we had to wait for just 15 minutes before we were seated. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive and super helpful in answering all our questions. Our orders came out quickly and the portions were large. Best of all, the taste of the margaritas, guacamole, enchiladas, fajitas and quesadillas were some of the best Mexican food we had eaten in all of San Diego.

Great parking and food options

By Vanessa-NC |

Great modifications to typical mexican menu that include lobster. 4 coworkers and I had to wait about 35 mins for a seat but it was well worth it, Great atmosphere and we were all very happy with our selections. Definitely would go back. Great area to walk off the dinner too!

The food is okay. Bad service

By SAR |

The food is okay. We ordered a bit of everything and shared it all. BUT... we were very close to leaving because of the ignorant waitress. She claimed that she wasn’t allowed to serve us alcohol because we only had international IDs. Apparently you may only consume alcohol in California if you have a US ID. I’ve never experienced that problem in any country or state. My ID (driver’s license and Passport) normally do the job all over the world. She claimed that our drivers license could be fake - they are European so the birthdate is written ‘backwards’ and that confused the woman. But even with the birthdate backwards all of the birth years proved us old enough. Some of us had brought our passports but she said that they also looked fake. I guess that she’s never been outside The US :-D. Our ages are between 31 and 64 yrs. Horrible service. I mean, she could se on our ID that we were Danes and Russians - NEVER keep a Dane or a Russian away from their alcohol!!!

Misses the mark

By Heath M |

Atmosphere is a 4-5 but food doesn’t measure up. We loved the setting, and were disappointed with the food. Courtyard was pretty. Weather was gorgeous. Server was enthusiastic but didn’t see him much after the food came. Got the fajitas and split a sampler platter. Chips are oddly thick and it makes them chewy instead of crispy. Guac is thin and not sure if it’s maybe prepackaged? Meat lacked flavor. Lemonade was weak. I recommend you try any other of the 1,000 Mexican restaurants in the area.

Very expensive, nothing fresh, average food, dirty

By JAM360 |

Did the research, read the reviews on TA, asked hotel front desk, bell man, tour guide and everyone said go here. So we scratched our research and went here. Definitely a place of locals which is a plus; looking for authentic food and top notch margarits.. While waiting 30 mins for a table, waited 15 minutes trying to get 2 beers on tap. We scratched the idea of margaritas (supposedly the best in SD) after watching the bartender really screwing around and messing up the order in front of us. VERY disappointing. We were seated at a table for 5 though didn't realize that the table and the floor were not not cleared. French fries everywhere - brought the flies. The food ingredients - all prepared ahead of time. AND therefore all I could eat was a cheese quesadilla due to an allergy. Will definitely not go back. Over $100 for 3 people including 2 draft beers, 2 burritos and 1 cheese quesadilla.

DELICIOUS

By July98 |

The tilapia and shrimp combo was soooo good! Best food I ate in California. Chips and salsa served before your meal. Waitress really nice.

Great Place

By CINTH |

This place is amazing. They had great food, tasty drinks, and amazing atmosphere. I recommend it to all.

Delicious but pricey!

By Dr. Barry Travels |

I wanted to eat great mexican in an outdoor setting and Casa de Reyes did not disappoint. 3 entrees, 4 drinks (margs), 1 soda, , and 1 quac set me back $160 with tip, Atmosphere is wonderful and so was the food but be prepared to pay if you want the complete experience.

What a Fantastic Place

By Pedro P |

This is the type of Mexican Restaurant where you want to be. Open air, big tables, excellent margaritas, and a real Mexican cuisine flavour. It was our Nº1 meal in San Diego.

Surrounded by dressed up Halloween skeletons! Fun!

By TravelGoddess61 |

The place was more fun than the food. We ate outside and the atmosphere was nice and they had Mariachis that would come to your table for a tip. We had the bean and cheese tostada and the food was very average. The chips are salsa were good and we each had a beer. If you are there around Halloween you have to go to the outside plaza to see all the Skeletons all dressed in different clothes which are very cool to see, and the altar for the Day of the Dead too. We would return to see that but not the food.

Good Mexican food

By David T |

Went here for dinner with my family. Seating was scattered around the courtyard with live music. Food was good and service was efficient. Nice places to shop before and after your meal. I would eat here again

Old Town San Diego Mexican

By OklahomaMomOf3 |

Casa De Reyes is at the far end of the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. When we were there, it was decorated for Christmas and was very colorful and festive. Our group of about 35 had a private room and set menu with a few options. I had the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans and churros for dessert and a small frozen margarita. We also had chips, salsa and guacamole, but I only got one taste of the guac because it was so good the others devoured it while I was talking! The frozen margarita, while being very tasty, was hard to drink without a straw. I ended up requesting one. Other people ordered their margarita on the rocks, which eliminated the straw issue. The enchiladas were very good and there was plenty of food! Service was a little slow, but I chalked that up to the size of our group.

Wish I could eat chips & salsa and drink daiquiris here all day.

By L Quinn |

First - their chips & salsa is the bombdiggity! OMG I just wanted to eat that all day, every day. Second - THE best daiquiris ever. Not too strong, just perfect. Third - I'm not a fan of chili verde, but theirs is fantastic! I wished I would have ordered that. I did dip my taquitos in my husband's order of it though, so there's that. ;) Service was great, ambiance was wonderful (beautiful blooming Plumeria, along with lots of other plants make it even more lovely). We truly enjoyed our lunch!

Bland mexican food

By Veneckyclam |

Well that’s what you pay for here, the atmosphere. You pick this restaurant to be immersed in a Mexican bazar but it’s actually a tourist trap. The food was a bit disappointing, it could’ve been more traditional and flavorful. (The food wasn’t warm enough, the traditional chicken pozole soup wasn’t heated enough. The carnitas burrito was horrendous just filled with beans and with an extra side of beans on top of it. It almost felt like the old 80’s commercial when you say “Where’s the beef ? “ The chips were stale. The salsa wasn’t fresh. The chicken enchiladas were dry. Of course we are a large group so gratuity was already included so service was rather lacking. ) On the good side, we were exposed to the outdoor ambiance with all the decorations around. Of course, we were on vacation so it couldn’t get too bad. We recommend the pork enchiladas with salsa verde (green sauce).

Great Mexican experience!

By Astrobeemer |

The fiesta like atmosphere is what made this place great, from the live music to the servers in traditional Mexican outfits and everything in between. The food and drinks were pretty good as well - not amazing , but the vibe made up for it. The portions were huge , and the prices were decent although I don’t like when restaurants nickel and dime you with extra service charges. Overall it was ok - the kind of place you have to try once but once only.

Plain tasting

By Voyage Critic |

Food tastes super plain. The carnitas was supposed to have some lime and orange flavors, but it just tasted like simple pork. The salsa that comes with chips was very watery and tasteless. Tables, chairs, and menus didn’t look too clean. We waited a long time to get our server, and it’s weird because they charged an extra 4% for a better and faster service. Our waiter turned out to be super nice helpful, which was the best part of our meal.

great setting, good food

By ACTtherapist |

We have had some very bad experiences with mexican restaurants in the Old Town area, so we were cautious here about our expectations, but were pleasantly surprised. We lunched here on one of those perfect San Diego breezy sunny days and the setting was gorgeous and relaxing. Our waitress answered all our questions and we were pleased that she was obviously being honest and not "hyping" anything, which made us trust her. Obviously we are going to eat here and spend money so why not tell us the truth or her own opinions? We were very thankful that her advice was spot on and we thoroughly enjoyed our food, even though we had a lot leftover. I would recommend eating here and avoiding many of the other restaurants in this area.

Huge restaurant with authentic Mexican feel

By Karen N |

We have eaten here several times over the years. I must offer a disclaimer that we live in Arizona, and love Sonoran style and New Mexican style Mexican food. So while the food here was good of kind, it is not my preferred style. The atmosphere is fun and authentic. The servers dress in traditional dress. There was live music. We were able to eat on the huge outside courtyard. The whole restaurant is very large with lots of staff. There are shops surrounding it. We had a very nice meal. My go-to.menu items are always cheese enchiladas and shredded beef tacos. So they are what I compare Mexican restaurant to Mexican restaurant. I acknowledge that it is always about personal taste preferences, so ai don’t want to discourage anyone from trying this restaurant! It will be a lovely experience, and a good touristy one, by the way!

Still charging 4% Covid Surcharge….C’mon man!

By Marion A |

Premium prices for mediocre food and drink. Also charging a 4% surcharge on guest check. Our waitress explained that it is a “Covid Surcharge” from back in the time when capacity was limited. What?? It’s basically all tourists, so I assume the owner doesn’t expect return business anyway. Sad gouging.

Great restaurant in old town

By Frank R |

Looks like I lleft a review already We always go to Casa de Reyes while in San Diego, love the live music and atmosphere along with the dishes, I found a vegetable on my plate I wasn't familiar with and ask what is was, come to fine out it was a watermelon redish white on the outside pink or reddish on the inside it's part if the daikon family. Excellent service and meals as always, Frank

A festive experience with great food

By Tina F |

This is a wonderful experience if you’re in the area. Located in Old Town, it’s a very large open air restaurant with live music and many cute shops that you can stop in while you’re waiting for your table. I had the chicken enchilada and fish taco plate and was able to substitute black beans for refried pintos. They also make a delicious frozen skinny margarita. Everything tasted fantastic and our server was so friendly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Worst meal in San Diego

By starosta93 |

One of the worst meals we’ve ever had. The fish in the fish taco smelled /tasted like “old sponge.” Ew. And the enchilada was not great, either. The guacamole was expensive but only soupy avocado...no flavor and definitely not worth what they charged! We will NOT be back.

Food was overcooked.

By SDMommy |

Did not enjoy dinner tonight. Dispite having many open tables, we were seated in a poor location next to the outdoor serving station. We could not see the stage. I ordered the steak and shrimp stuffed with crab and wrapped with bacon. The shrimp and steak came out so overcooked, it was like chewing beef jerky. I grew up eating at this patio although it was called something different before. We live in NJ now. I was hoping to share my great memories with my kids. This dinner experience was terrible. Next time, we will go to Cafe Coyote, their food is consistently good.

Amazing Old Town Stop

By Lindy M |

Super delicious Mexican food with a HUGE patio, really great service, and a fun aesthetic/atmosphere. We loved this place!

Old Town Mexican experience

By AB_Travel |

Service, atmosphere and food were excellent. A little like going to Mexico without travelling. Really enjoyed the evening

Great food and ambiance

By pattiderenzo |

Excellent service was given to us by Patricia. The food was excellent and well priced. The outside seating under umbrellas with water fountain and strolling minstrels added to the ambiance.

Great Mexican Food in Old Town San Diego!

By E4149VCrobertc |

Outside covered seating. No reservations, but if you have not a large group, not too long to wait. Great margueritas by the pitcher. All the food is good. I like the taquitos appetizers and I order those with rice and beans as my entree. Just the best that I have tasted. Salsa has a kick and good flavor. On weekends, they usually have a Mexican band playing and you can sit and listen or even dance. Nice to plan a later afternoon trip to Old Town, kick around, then stop at Casa de Reyes for dinner. There are a number of other good restaurants there, too.

Great Mexican Food

By dennis802 |

Restaurant has great Mexican food and drinks. Being next to the Entertainment stage, you can also enjoy the music while dining. Highly recommend.

Good place to eat in Old Town San Diego

By Gene K |

Nice outdoor seating in an attractive courtyard. Food is well prepared and portions large. Service is friendly and efficient. Free parking is available nearby.

Mexi - can’t - absolute garbage

By Brigadoon |

I’ve been to more authentic burger kings than this tripe. Old town San Diego is a travesty. It has all the authenticity of an Oscar award show. And if there was an award for cliche crud this would get it. Case de Reyes is the star of this rubbish, not just bog standard. It is bog. Inside space is some jokey folky art that doesn’t even pretend to be good. There is more atmosphere on Mars than this place and nobody I saw stayed more than 20 minutes at their table. The food would go down badly in a Mexican superjail. Bad on presentation, poorly presented and basically prison slop. I feel sorry for the staff, who were ok, but I do question how they can genuinely serve this cowpat filth and still smile - maybe I’m guilty of tipping them. My advice. Walk thru & pretend to be dazzled by the history but get a burger from your fast food joint of choice,

Yes the can accommodate 18

By Leroy J |

We showed up on a Saturday night with a party of 18. I told the manager it was ok to use several tables as long as they were close. The got us in in less than one hour wait an put us a three tables right next to each other. As always the food was excellent and the service very good. The waitress even divided the bill into each party. We will be back

Music was fun!

By Christine N |

Enjoyed the festive music, not too loud and they played at the tables after asking. Food great and lots of choices for margaritas! Prices reasonable. Quaint area with a chocolate shop next door.

Never disappoints - nice lunch

By db7477 |

We enjoyed a lovely family lunch at Casa de Reyes. The service, food and atmosphere were wonderful. The Steak and Chicken Fajitas and the Cadillac Margarita were very good. We’re look forward to a post-COVID return!

Touristy, Tasty, and Terrific

By Johnny Trekkie |

I know, Casa De Reyes is smack in the middle of one of the most touristy centers of San Diego. But its a gosh darn lovely tourist trap to stuck in while enjoying margaritas, a free bowl of chips and salsa, a plate of tasty Mexican food, and listening to the lovely music of a local mariachi band. The outdoor ambiance is just too good to ignore on typical gorgeous San Diego afternoon, or a balmy evening during spring, summer, and fall. Is the food authentic? After eating Mexican food for over 40 years, I think its close enough, and its all really good! $16.50 for a 2 item combo, or $17.50 for 3 item combo. If you're not good at math, just know you should really get the 3 item combo. Comes with your choice of tacos, enchiladas, tamales, with different meat choices. Rice and beans included of course! I highly recommend the shrimp enchilada, beef enchilada, beef taco, and pork tamale, and you can just ignore me because everything is good. One final note, you definitely want to be here for Dio De Los Muertes...the decorations, costumes, music, dance entertainment, and energy is amazing!

Lively atmosphere, nice location, delicious fresh food

By mwilliams15 |

Really enjoyed this place The fact it was incredibly busy tells you all you need to know and you cant reserve at all which was actually good In a nice wee part of town nice to do a walk around the old town whilst waiting on our text telling us table was ready Complementary nacho chips with salsa dip which had a little after kick We all ordered fajotas which came with beans and rice So good we we t back the next night where we found it equally as busy Deservedly so We have travelled from san fransisco, santa cruz, monterey, LA and this was our favourite meal on the whole trip Would definitely go back

Mediocre food, nice atmosphere

By Robert M |

Great atmosphere but mediocre food and overpriced drinks. Although the service was great and the wait was short, next time I’ll walk a couple blocks and eat at one of many options on San Diego Ave. where drinks are half the price.

Mexican Food Restaurant

By Elizabeethan |

Had dinner with friends while on a trip to San Diego. Located in Old Town San Diego, Casa de Reyes serves authentic Mexican food. We had a few minutes wait before we were seated. Waitstaff was terrific, but when the food was served, one person found a long hair in her food, and someone else found a big piece of plastic. The food was replaced and the manager very apologetic. I'd give it more stars because my food was delicious, but can't because of the hair and plastic.

TRADITIONAL MEXICAN FOOD

By kdeli |

Εxcellent experience in Mexican food. The tables were in garden. The waiter was helpful and willing to explain the choices we had for traditional Mexican flavors. The portions were quite large and very taste . We suggest to go to try mexican food.

2019 holiday

By Georgeann B |

Always visit here when over in San Diego. Beware of, it is very busy and you may have to wait up to half hour for a table, but totally worth the wait.

We were warned NOT to eat here. Too late.

By Bob S |

Our worst restaurant experience in years. The restaurant was about half full on a bright sunny day. Completely IGNORED by our waitress after we wanted to split an appetizer and order inexpensive drinks. Asked for water refills. Never got them air temperature was over 90°. We ordered an appetize variety plate, which was plenty of food, and what we expected. We wanted another napkin or two and some water refills, and to order another cocktail. Completely ignored. After I got up to find more napkins someplace our waitress magically appeared. We were done. After we left, we went to one of the first shops that were adjacent and the clerk inside said, "You should have asked me. You go there once and you'll never go back." This restaurant only has customers because it's a convenient place. The old management was much better a few years ago. As permanent San Diegans, we will never return here. Never.

Wonderful food and location

Great location in old town. Fantastic food, drinks, and service. Outdoor seating, flowers, trees, and shops.

Staff was so nice and food was amazing. The El Jefe margarita was amazing. Seating outdoors was very comfortable.

Decorated Lunch

By Rainier72 |

Being my last full day in San Diego, I wanted at least one more special meal before I left. Being in Old Town and not really having the true Mexican food meal, I chose to go to Casa De Reyes. This is a fun little corner of the park. The corner as a whole is called Fiesta De Reyes with the restaurant of course and a lot of cool shops. From what I can tell, every table is outdoors which is great considering of how sunny San Diego is. The hostess and servers were quite friendly. It took a little time for the server to get back after getting seated, but she was very apologetic and the rest of the visit went smoothly. I went with the chile relleno being one of my favorites. It ended up being quite good, but what impressed me the most was how decorated it was. I've never gotten a meal presented like that. Extra peppers and other decorations I've never seen before anywhere. I normally don't take pictures of meals, but I had to this time. Casa De Reyes made for a nice meal to end my time in San Diego. I may never see another one like it anywhere else.

Good food in a lovely setting.

By Cheryl D |

We ate lunch here on a lovely day and the setting was great. It is in a courtyard with fountains and plants. The service was quick and quite good. The waitress was helpful and helped us to figure out which items could be done vegetarian. The food was good -- not the best ever -- but no complaints and the overall experience was very nice.

Good churros!!

By LeslieLorraine |

Went here for a quick lunch while exploring Old Town. I was very impressed with the service. Tomaz was our server and he was very attentive. I ordered the margarita and the churros and they were delicious. My boyfriend ordered the fish taco and pork tamale combination. Both were good. Definitely a great place to stop if you're in Old Town!

Favorite Place to Eat!

By Sandy C |

On our family vacation we had to go to Casa de Reyes - it’s our very favorite place to eat! My husband and I had our first date there 38 years ago. It was good then and is still good. We all loved the food: fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, chips and salsa. The best thing is the home made tortillas. Loved them! We ordered extra flour tortillas and there were none left over. Good service too

Nice outdoor spot for lunch

By cmkcmk |

My two enchiladas (cheese and shrimp) were very good. The guacamole appetizer was flavorful. The outdoor setting had lots of options some in the shade, some in the sun.

Typical Mexican Fare

By Weenus912 |

I really liked the setup and location of this restaurant. We went on a Saturday evening so we knew that there would be a wait. We were initially told it would be 45 minutes but we were seated in less than 25 minutes. But while we waited some of us sat and watched the entertainment. There was live music and dancing. The rest of us visited the little shops that surround the restaurant. These activities made the wait seem even shorter. The food was typical fare. There wasn't anything outstanding about it. But it was good as was the service even though they were very busy.

Amazing lady

By Jmckay |

The stuff is amazing!food is amazing I was too broke to leave a proper tip but they’re amazing here a definite must!!!

Sadly Disappointed

By Mark N |

Having eaten here many times over the years, this visit was a sad disappointment. We waited fifteen minutes for a waiter to even take out drink order. The table was not clean on arrival. We were never asked about refills on our drinks. The food was average once we finally ordered, but then we were left alone u til we finally had to get up and fond a waiter to get our bill. Needless to say the tip was minimal. While the location is great this restaurant is not worth the wait.

Fabulous Lunch, Best Margarita!

By GaryReg |

After arriving in Old Town San Diego, we found out when the tour was starting, then went for lunch in Fiesta de Reyes square, at Casa de Reyes outdoor restaurant. We started with a Margarita for my Sweetie and a Lagunitas for Me. The lunch we ordered was fabulous, one of the best meals of our trip, definitely the best Mexican meal. Lynn had Chicken Tacos that were crispy, the way she likes them, with a salad. I had the “3 Choice meal” of 1 Chicken Taco, 1 Shrimp Burrito, and 1 Pork Tamale, which was my least favourite as it was filled with rice. However there was a lot of food, and we were able to eat it all because it tasted so good.

Carnitas platter. Order it!

By Dan Sadler |

Carnitas platter. Order the carnitas platter. Wow! Lots of food and worth the price! Setting is so cool with restaurant in the middle and brightly

Food top, service could be more active

By Tristan |

We were greeted in a friendly and welcoming manner. We were also given a table straight away. The service was friendly, but then we were slow to arrive. The food came quickly and was very good. The plate was well filled. The point/star deduction is because of the long wait for the order and also for the payment, because it did not seem as if our service was stressed. The tables were not cleared for a long time, even though the guests had already left a long time ago. All in all, highly recommended.

Loving the food at Casa de Reyes

By BrookHaines |

Loving the food and atmosphere at Casa de Reyes. 12 of us tried lots of different food. Everything was really good and the service was excellent.

touristy atmosphere in old town with tried and true delivery

this is a nice place, busy, crowded, good for families. we had a wait for the table but were pleasantly surprised to be entertained by Mexican dancers in full costume. the food was above decent and the service good considering that the place was slammed. everyone was working very hard. not a fancy place but a good visit. great chips!

very disappointed

By ron l |

came to San Diego for vacation. My daughter lives in Carlsbad and we wanted something to do different. Decided to go to Old Town. We were having a great time, shopping, seeing the sights etc. When it was time to eat, we saw this place, loved the look, the atmosphere, very very festive, colorful, etc. We were greeted and seated very quickly, server was very responsive and very nice, very welcoming. Ordered a sampler platter, which contained rolled chicken tacos as well as another order of chicken tacos. Food came out very quickly. I smelled a funny smell as soon as the food arrived, but figured it was maybe the seasoning or whatever. Continued to eat as did my daughter, but continued to smell something foul. Finally I couldn't do it any longer. I called the server and told her that ALL the chic tacos were bad--as in spoiled. Mgr checked the food, found it was true, and came out and took it off the bill. Good gesture, but we spent the rest of our day wondering if we were going to be sick. I was scheduled to fly back to VA 3 days later and was very concerned for both of us. The sad part is that the place has an awesome atmosphere. It was a little pricy but I only see my daughter once a year so I figured why not. Very disappointing. What if I hadn't told them. how many people had they served and how many more would they have served with spoiled meat. The review gets 2 stars because the atmosphere is great but is offset by bad prep/storage practices

Plenty to eat but not stuffed

By E L |

My daughter and I decided to explore Old Town. It was dinner time so we stopped in for a bite to eat. The food was excellent from the chips/salsa, through dinner and all the way to a cup of coffee. We didn't feel rushed and just relaxed, while listening to the 'band' play. Great food and memories.

A Shadow of Its Former Self

By Rexflash |

This is a Post-Covid review. We were formerly fans, but can no longer recommend. They were observing proper distancing etc. The house-made tortillas continue to be a draw, but in every other way, we were very disappointed. To start off, they have implemented a 4% surcharge on all bills. Not sure what the justification for this is other than to make up for lost income. One in our party had the veggie fajitas. This was an uninspired hot plate of green peppers and onions. Other Mexican restaurants we have been to Post-Covid have shown much more imagination in the range of vegetables included. Another had a combination plate with with a pork enchilada with red sauce. Skimpy on the sauce. And the crispy shredded beef taco was overdone with dried out beef and the usual toppings. Beans and rice were very average. The third member had a taco salad with only veggies. Again, mostly romaine lettuce and little else. And $13 for a watery house margarita. The total bill, with a nice tip for our server who was trying her best, was $90. This is high by about $25 for the meal received. Sorry, but we won't be back.

nice place to cool off

By NEofAZ |

depending on time of day and day of week you could expect delays. the food is delivered very fast and hot. getting your food is another thing though as it does take some time to be waited on and tho receive your drinks, so the more you read your menu and order quicker the faster you get your food(duh.) nice out door atmosphere to take in the area.

Characteristic

Rating 5 to the location, very characteristic. Rating 3 to the burrito, a bit too messy. Abundant portion, I could not finish it!

First Time Experience at Mexican Restaurant

By jandefischer |

Even though my wife and I are in our 60's, we have never eaten at a Mexican restaurant. While in Old Town, San DIego, we decided to bit the bullet and eat at Casa de Reyes. We were immediately served warm tortillas and salsa which were both excellent. We then both ordered the tilapia main course which was absolutely delicious with black beans and Mexican corn. Our server was excellent. It was a wonderful first experience with authentic Mexican cuisine.

Great margaritas

By Louie C |

They have the best margaritas besides Café Cayote. They have different flavor, sizes of drinks, and of course the different prices. They have a stage where they have different performers and an area for dancing

Watch What You Are Paying For!!!

This is a nice location in Old Town San Diego and looks authentic--staff was very nice and efficient. My review comes down to a "bait and switch" tactic that I thought was underhanded. They advertise their house margarita in regular size, large size, and souvenir glass. I ordered a large and my partner ordered the regular. His came in a hurricane style glass, mine in a regular sized water glass. Both tasted terrible (and I know and enjoy my margaritas!) But I sipped on mine finishing it. My partner hated his and poured it into my glass. Can you believe that the same amount in his regular size margarita filled my "large" size water glass? The glass content was the same size but I paid $2 more for my large size. What a rip! And they tasted bad also. We also got assessed a service fee on top of the regular bill to "help out with these troubled times". PLEASSE! Covid is over and businesses need to build their costs into their pricing. Yes--this is printed on the menu--but buyer beware! This is ridiculous! We won't be back! And I'm a native Californian!

Arrived 10 minutes late for

By silvertips2015 |

Arrived 10 minutes late for breakfast, the waitress said no problem. Ordered the chorizo breakfast. Delicious the chorizo was good, beans were better than average and chips and salsa very good. Good service and decent prices. My new favorite place in old town

Really good food

By Andrew |

Really loved this place. Out of all the places in Old Town, this place stands out for its food and scenery. The menu is simple but there is no wrong option with whatever you pick. Didn’t have to wait for a table. Server was attentive which made the experience better. Overall, the food makes the place stand out along with the iconic outdoor seating.

This place is a joke.

Extremely disappointed with this restaurant. The food is not authentic Mexican and it tastes really bad. We ordered a Molcajete del Mar, which was $26.95 plus tax, and what you get for that is the tiniest and worst-tasting molcajete I have ever tried in my life. It comes with a side of rice, beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. And tortillas. Only TWO tortillas. Really? Also, they were the worst tasting tortillas. The lobster on the molcajete was very salty and disgusting. All in all, this will be our first and last time in this place. Whoever considers this food as Mexican doesn't know what real Mexican food is. The only good thing about this restaurant is the staff, our server was the best, and the hostess are very friendly. Too bad for the subpar taste and quality of the food. Another positive point is the ambiance and decor. Would I recommend this place? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Best of Old Town

This establishment was recommended by the area tourist information employee. The atmosphere and the food live up to our expectations. This is a Must see restaurant of the Old Town area off San Diego.

Hoped for More

By Jim and Leslie |

I had been here before for drinks and snack so I decided to bring my wife. It was a Monday night so not much was going on. The service was a little slower and the food not so great. The margaritas were very good but the chirros had a weird cream. All in all, just ok. I had hoped it was a better experience for my wife.

Enjoyed it

By Waddler |

Perhaps this isn't the world's most authentic meal, but it was enjoyable. The restaurant is in a bright, colourful, buzzing garden with a stage with a band playing on a Sunday lunchtime. We enjoyed the meal, and the hot tortilla chips were flowing to the table as quickly as we ate them! Would come again if in San Diego.

Year After Year

By doe928 |

We have been coming here for 40+ years and it never disappoints. We moved out of state many years ago and every time we come back on vacation this is always a “must stop.” Our grand children now love it also. It’s a destination restaurant for us. Thanks for keeping the fun and food the best!

Sit outside, eat some salsa, enjoy :)

We love the food here but the ambiance is perfection. Sitting outside among the cacti and the birds, live music, perfect weather... loved it eating here 17 years ago and loved it today.

"Fantastic Atmosphere" | Delicious Mexican Cuisine!

By Daniel Kahn Nelson |

This was definitely a restaurant that gave you a time warp experience with its wonderful authentic atmosphere. You already feel like you've traveled back in time when you enter Old Town San Diego, but its when you sit down in the Casa De Reyes, that you truly feel like its 1872 and you are dinning in an outdoor Mexican Cantina. Everything from the wait staff in period attire to the live music is designed to take you back to the old west. The food was absolutely delicious as would be expected and it was served in generous portions to be sure. I remember when I had this experience 20 years ago. Its so good to see that it still delivers the same time honored high quality.

Lunch- Casa de Reyes, Old Town

By Rose H |

We had a lovely lunch here. We didn’t expect the meals to be so big so we left a lot of it. Great friendly service, fabulous cool and exotic drink selection and tasty food at a good price. These folks work hard and aim to please. Well worth a visit.

Mexican Old Town Style

By Andy B |

Smack in the heart of Old Town San Diego, Casa de Reyes sits amongst shops and a mission to give you that authentic Mexican feel. Enhanced by Day of the Dead festivities the visit to Casa de Reyes was certainly entertaining. I had the enchiladas from the specials menu. My drink of choice was a classic margarita (however, I received a frozen margarita). This restaurant offered a very good Mexican culture experience. Be sure to park at CalTrans on Taylor Street. Parking in Old Town during Day of the Dead festivities on the weekend is tough.

Decent place to eat

By pjenison |

I've been going to this restaurant simce I was a child (when it was under a different name) and there food is decent. Chili rellenos was good and they have good chips and margaritas. However, although there regular salsa is flavorful, they don't have anything really hot. Unfortunate because I wanted them to brimg I'm the heat! Don't come here if you want hot salsa, but otherwise the food is good.

Great Food - Live Music - Fun

Fun experience

Have been a few times before but didnt enjoy the food this time at all. Felt like the tacos had no flavor. Mojito was good. Very busy with lots of people

Great location. Awful food

By phil-the-badger |

The location and setting of this place is fantastic. Clearly aimed at tourists and they've done a great job of it. They clearly have live music at times but not the day that we went. Wait staff are all dressed in traditional Mexican dress. Service was good. Unfortunately the food was one of the worst meals I've ever had. Everything was pretty much a tasteless gooey mess. Could only manage about 3 mouthfuls and had to leave the rest. Great place for a relaxing drink but I would recommend going elsewhere for something to eat.

GREAT AS ALWAYS

By richardgregg11 |

The experience the food the drinks all make this place an amazing experience every time we come here. We have been coming for over 25 years to this location every time we come to old town.

Overcooked food

By Bill W |

Stopped here for lunch and was greatly disappointed. Appetizer chips were greasy and stuck together in clumps. Had Armadillo shrimp and the bacon was over cooked and dry.

Overcharged

By Sergio Baeza |

The food was okay but the service terrible, we were 6 and we were sat at a very small round table for maximum 3 people when there was many bigger tables available. Our plates barely fit on the table to the point that we had to set the plates sideways to make them fit.(the plates are oval) when asked for another’s table we were told there was not other tables available. We stayed there for about an hour and a half and the empty tables were empty the whole entire time. It is a Mexican restaurant that welcomes white people better than Hispanic people. We are a Hispanic family and we fell so unwelcome at that restaurant. When asked for the check, I was brought somebody else’s check, I notice it when I checked the items in the check. Waitress was told about it and she printed the new check I paid for it , when I got to hotel I realized that we were charge over $10 per plate more than it was advertised in the menu. I am Very disappointed, that’s the reason why I don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone, due to their fraudulent practices and bad service.

Memorial Day Dinner !

By DannyWasserman |

We had an amazing dinner during our holiday weekend in San Diego. We love coming to this place as we enjoy Old Town, then get a fiesta at this stunning Mexican Retaurant. We love the live music, dance floor, and loads of ancillary shops nearby. The drinks are refreshing, the meals are plentiful, the salsa and chips are a good start, and the servers are top notch. This is a must see and do if you are in the area.

Food was delightful the atmosphere was authentic. Portion are large easy to share. The el jefe margarita was big enough for three to share. The tortillas were homemade style and out of this world.

Sunny spot for Mexican!

By HolidaySpeak1 |

Brilliant spot out in a square in old town. Lovely to sit in the sun (although you may want to ask for shade!!). Service was quick and friendly and food was nice Mexican (although i wouldn’t say stand out / unique Mexican). A really enjoyable lunch!

Impromptu Dinner

Great service, great food. Atmosphere was lively and fun. We were seated immediately even with the restaurant being so busy. Did not disappoint!

Great outdoor setting in Old Town

Great outdoor setting in Old Town. Great food and atmosphere. Our waiter, Eddie was great. He was helpful in our meal selection and we were very pleased with our whole dining experience.

Excellent lunch

By 2marcopolos |

Excellent mexican food lunch in old San Diego Historic Park. This is a large place with a lot of outdoor dining. Don't be concerned about the weather for they have outdoor heaters everywhere. The service was excellent an we shared a large seafood dish that our waitress suggested. Good drinks......

Great Food!

By do_the_freddy |

This review happened in April 2023. My wife and I were in San Diego for spring break we had lunch and casa de Reyes and it was a great place to eat. My wife had the Blackened Tilapia and Shrimp, and she loved it. She said she would eat it again. She said it was spice with great flavor. I had the Chicken Mole Poblano and I loved it. It was sweety, spicy, and smokey. It tasted like it was made from scratch. I could even testate the chocolate. They give you pretty good portions of food and they are big enough to share. Thats what my wife and I did. We will be eating here again. We were really impressed with the food, and we recommend you try this restaurant when you are in Old Town. You will not be disappointed.

Quick and Delicious!

By gcfam79 |

Visiting this place in the middle of COVID-19, they are following all Health and Safety protocols from what I could tell. Besides that, the new protocols didn't take away from the beauty and ambiance of this restaurant which is pretty much an all out door setting. Incredibly nice. Let's get down to it... Service We waited approximately 30 minutes which isn't too bad, it's average, especially considering the location of Old Town San Diego. Once seated, our waiter took our drink orders right away. Within minutes, took our orders. Now, this was a complete mind boggler. Typically in a busy restaurant, which that day it was pretty busy, we anticipated a wait for our food. No, that wasn't the case here. Our food came out incredibly quick. We weren't the only ones. Table after table were getting knocked out quickly!! Speedy service for sure!! They didn't mess around. So, if it came out quick, how was the food.... Food I ordered the Pollo Asado Burrito. It's a beast to say the least (yeah, I rhymed!). It's huge, it's filling, and it did not disappoint! Our table including the pickiest of the bunch, 2 kids, they were all satisfied with their meals. Drinks and Food TOTALLY worth it!!! Bottom line, out of 10, I give it a 10...FOR SURE!!
