Delicious sandwiches!

By wmc2 |

Next time I'll have on of their famous hamburgers. I had a salmon sandwich that couldn't have been better. Good service, rich coffee.

Hands Down - Best Burger Ever

By Andreas W |

Just want to inform you guys that this place has the best hamburger that I’ve ever tasted! I ordered the american burger with fries. Also kudos to the cool Mister that waited our table. Want to go back today!

Best burger on the west coast!

By Christine L |

Best burger I have had in years. Very simply made and plated, but sensational is an understatement. Burger was perfection.

A Great Experience

By Simon R |

I asked a guy in the street, who looked like he would know good food, for a recommendation. He directed us to Causwells for 'the best burger in the US'. Tom then, amusingly, admitted he had an ownership interest in the place. To be fair, he also gave us some other local restaurant options. We sat outside to watch the world go by whilst having a fantastic burger and great service. I'm sure there was other food to speak of but I was too busy devouring the burger to even notice what what my family were eating. Thanks Tom - a great place to eat and you are what makes San Francisco a great place to be!

Great food

By 568Traveller1 |

Brilliant food, service and atmosphere...definitely would recommend it. Went with my family, had main courses and desserts....all delicious, especially the banana bread. Staff really attentive. Not cheap, but worth it...

A aristocratic name for an amazing culinary experience!

By gypsyrose12 |

I generally have pedestrian tastes in lunch menus but Causwells may have turned me into a 'foodie'!! We started our lunch with the housemate Ricotta appetizer. The ricotta was generously sprinkled with rosemary honey which was absolutely delicious. The appetizer was accompanied with lavosh crackers...a perfect combination. On a nice day one could simply sit outside drink their lovely wine and enjoy this fantastic appetizer! We then shared an incredible beet salad. Every component of the salad was fresh and made one want for more. The perfect amount of dressing was applied although for those that prefer a lighter touch on the dressing might request for it to be delivered on the side. We then completed our meal with the chicken sandwich ..done to perfection. As a side we had the crispy onions ...to die for ...although maybe not good on a first date!!

Great beer, burger and service!

By konasz |

What a great experience! Service was friendly, attentive and fast. We really enjoyed our server. The brunch burger was outstanding. Beef, cheese, eggs and bacon- what more could you ask for! The bun was soft, fresh and not overpowering. Great beer and wine selection. I would definitely recommend and come back.

Dinner with a flair

By katycarey |

Great small restaurant so better make reservations, food was delicious, and impeccable friendly service. Roasted Brussels Sprouts with bacon were the perfect appetizer! We love the hamburger with double meat cooked with perfection, juicy soft tasty bun. I had the small dish ribs, they were so tender and tasty. In all I’ll highly recommend this place!

Good food

By BeLaZe |

Service was friendly. The place is a bit austere for the food quality and presentation, the patio seats are crammed together and the door, the asphalt is stained and it is pretty windy. The interior is better, though the restroom resembles to a bus station's facility more than an upper-middle class restaurant's. The food was nicely presented and had great taste and texture, though unfortunately it came late and was colder than it should have been. Servings are not huge. While initially they minimized the delay, to our pleasant surprise the manager wrote off our drinks for the delay, even though we did not complain. Drinks were good: even the water tasted good (though the wine beat it) Overall: good food - sit inside on most days.

Casual Causwells On Chestnut

By briankulaf |

Sunny Sunday brunch al fresco today was splendid. Dog friendly joint made it even better! Started with the fluffy homemade biscuit with buttery& jam. Followed by the shredded smoked porked hash with an over easy egg and tots. Yummo. My dining partner had the chiliquiles. Mucho yummo! Only negative, wish that for $13.95, my bowl of hash came with toast.

Great local restaurant

By Bob V |

Spent 3 days in S.F. Went to Causwells on recommendation of hotel consierge. It was terrific. Not touristy at all which was a pleasant change. Trendy in a good way. Great vibe inside. Food was excellent. Burger one of the best I've had anywhere.

Great small plates

By John M |

We visited Causwells upon returning from an over indulgent land tour/cruise of Alaska. The small plates menu was a pleasant surprise. We had the deviled eggs, baby kale/strawberry/goat cheese salad, mussels, and ribs. All were excellent especially after two weeks of tour food. As other reviews have highlighted it is a small place...our table was by the window and very "cozy". Servers were very attentive and knowledgeable. Only beer and wine from the bar (as I learned after a non order of a goose martini). Beer list is extensive with no generic big brewer labels. Definitely a place for a return visit.

Nice burgers

By Yinon S |

Very tasty Burgers. Staff is very friendly too. Too bad that all the dishes weren't served at the same time.

Interesting menu

By Chris L |

Having walked up and down Chestnut Street and not sre where to eat we randomly chose Causwells, good choice, excellant service and good food, my trout was well prepared and great taste.

Good food, nice vibe

By IlariaK |

We were the first ones there for dinner and the server was super friendly and attentive. the drinks were good and so was the food, except for the falafel burger which was dry and lacked flavor. The menu needs to mark the vegetarian dishes - "sugo" in Italian is a sauce that doesn't contain meat, so someone in our party ordered the dish, but had to send it back when she realized it was a meat sauce (called "ragù" in Italian)....so that was disappointing.

Wonderful!

By BF H |

We wanted something light for an afternoon snack & discovered this delightful restaurant on chestnut. Fresh creamy Ricotta with honey & lemon, Salmon deviled eggs, carrot soup & ham hush puppies with a scrumpious sauce...oh my, all Sooo good!

new restaurant with very good food

By travelerell |

We happened upon this restaurant & had a wonderful lunch. It has just opened, but you would never know it by the quality of the food and service. Wait staff was great. We got to speak with Chef Adam & he was as personable as his food was good.

Favorite locals restaurant in the city

By Monique W |

If you're looking for the best hamburger of your life, paired with an amazing selection of brews and wine, this is your place. Not surprisingly, it's always busy thanks to a great location and friendly staff so expect a bit of a wait. But it's worth it!

Decent burger, but pricey

By thistle-do-nicely |

Food was fine as was the beer and wine, but it was too expensive compared to other eateries in the area. In fact, most of Chestnut seemed overpriced and we felt better served on Union.

A little cramped

By Ashley S |

The place is a little cramped. Good atmosphere, but the table I was sitting at felt like I was kinda in the way. The service was friendly and fast. The food pretty good. We had the ricotta and a salmon sandwich. Both were delicious and pretty filling.

Fab Sunday Brunch!

By Harriet T |

GREAT Sunday brunch - brunch burgers and wine / beer. Friendly nice service. Great people watching. What’s not to love!

Busy and crowded for a reason

By LuckyBobAZ |

I searched online for a good American style restaurant in San Francisco and Causwells was at the top of the list. For good reason. We arrived on a very busy Thursday night around 7 PM and wound up sitting at the bar. Normally not my first choice when with a group of three, but we made it work. The bartender and our waiter were top notch and made the experience more enjoyable. I ordered an Americana burger with fries. Traditional food, but very tasty. One of my colleagues ordered the same but with the crispy onions. Just look at how amazing his food is! Our other colleague order the "Fancy Pants," which is a Klingeman family beef burger with all of the fixings (not to mention, the most expensive item on the menu). He said that it was worth every penny! We weren't into the drinks, but the bartender was making the most amazing looking cocktails. We ended up enjoying our bar seats just to watch him make the mixed drinks!

First night in San Francisco

By JM1027 |

Could not have picked a better place. My husband enjoyed the awesome burger and I had one of the tasty salads. Service was exceptional and we were treated with personal service in our wine selections. Thank you!!

Great burger in a weird atmosphere

By JayhawkJim |

Let's be straight up - Causwells' burgers are really, really good. Their appetizers - devilled eggs & homemade ricotta - really good. But in looking around the place (a bar) - about 95% of the folks have burgers - what's up with the other options on the menu?? WHY? The lighting was very dim as well - heck, I could barely read the menu. Luckily, prior to going, I knew what I wanted. My toughest choice was deciding what IPA to tempt my pallet with. Recommendation - if you go - get a burger and enjoy it. One of the best, of the many I've tried. Fighting for parking (which I found a lot about a block and a half away) and the confusing ambience - is well worth it.

Big Burger!

By mceast67 |

On a friend's recommendation, six of us ate at Causwells on a Monday evening. Reservations suggested, even on Monday. Open air restaurant, great service, food was well prepared, arrived to the table nice and hot, beer and wine excellent choices! The burger is to die for!

Really good food and friendly people

By Timo van den Berg |

Very good burgers here that they serve. Also, a few nice beers on their drinking menu. The prices are quite high compared to other burger places around this one, but I think it is also worth the money. This is really one of the best and most delicious burgers we had during our trip in the United States of America. The people working here are really friendly and helpful. The terrace is next to the road, but they put a stone barrier in between, that you do not really hear the sound of approaching cars and traffic.

Amazing burger

By Wyatt Mufson |

The Americana Burger is great. A delicious bun with two great patties and cheese melted throughout. While it did fall apart a bit towards the end it was full of flavor. I added avocado and bacon which further improved the burger.

Another fun spot in the Marina Distrcit

By Marathonman13 |

Went here twice after trying several others spots on Chestnut Street. My friend who lives close by recommended the place so we went twice for drinks and snacks. We didnt eat much so can't say much about their main courses but the service was great and my friend who has been may times said the food was excellent. We only had deviled eggs at the time as we were just having some wine on our way to a sort of pub crawl. The perfect little spot for having a nice chat and starting the evening off right.

Quality unpretentious food with great, welcoming and engaging staff.

By HentiCat |

Went on the back of a recommendation from San Francisco magazine and loved it. Sat at the bar talking to Tim the owner about how he makes the ricotta and his friend's wine, Bodkins, goes with the food. We stuck to small plates so missed the award winning burger but did try the doughnut bread pudding which was wrong for all the right reasons. Definitely will return to try the burger and to enjoy the conversation again.

Quaint place

By Helen Clarke |

Not a bad place although limited menu and a table by the bathrooms is not ideal! Food came out cold which was disapponting but the staff were great.

Nice restaurant in Cow Hollow area

By Rick T |

The food was good, and the service friendly... My friend had a very nice burger with string onion crisps. We had salad and Octopus and ribs that were all excellent. High top table was sort of comfortable, and the prices were reasonable.

Fine brunch experience

By Brooke B |

This restaurant was good for a quick visit with friends on a Saturday morning. The food was very good but not outstanding. I appreciated that they were accommodating of our children. The French toast bites were different in a good way. Overall, I would eat here again for brunch.

Funky spot

By MICKDUTCH |

Grabbed a quick bit here last week, really interesting starters, beet salad, prawns followed by really nice burgers with deep fried onions , seemed to be really buzzing, I'd like to go back next time I'm in the area

Traveling from the east coast stopped in San Francisco on our way to Mexico

By Christine M |

Best burgers and great staff the people were really nice and welcoming as it was our first time visiting the west coast we were pleasingly surprised highly recommend visiting San Francisco and this awesome restaurant

Fantastic food!

By Judith W |

The food was exceptionally good! Both the fish and the burgers and the fine ricotta. The staff very accommodating. We ate outside, I was not in the restaurant itself and therefore cannot rate this one.

Great local brunch spot

By Jonathan P |

We stopped in for brunch after a friend recommended. We are visiting SF for the weekend and we’re looking for spots off the usual tourist path. All the food was delicious and the vibe was super quaint. We had the biscuits and gravy and the breakfast burger - both tasted great! Service was speedy and friendly as well!

Great brunch and lovely friendly staff

By textilesrus |

We were having brunch before seeing a film in the cinema next door. Great special of a meatloaf sandwich that was delicious served with great salad and gorgeous grapefruit mimosa. The staff are friendly and relaxed and everyone was having a great time.

Some great dishes

By Edie M |

My party of 3 ate here late on a Saturday evening. The place was hopping. The ricotta appetizer was really good as was the trout main dish. The service was great. Thank you, Stephen. A few cautions. The dining area is small and the tables are very close together so it was quite noisy when we first arrived. Try to get a table away from the bathroom or you will have to put up with a line of people at your elbow. Outside seating is available which a lot of people like. I look forward to returning.

Came here as alone diner

By rob27898 |

Came here as alone diner one evening around 7pm after a long google search of eateries in the area. Place is next to the cinema so easy to find although quite inconspicuous. The place was well staffed although not many patrons in. Managed to get a table even though I hadn’t booked. I was given a 2 hour window to eat, as after that the table was needed. Thankfully I managed to eat, alone; in 2 hours. For some reason I was placed on a 2 seater table literally 6inches from a couple having a romantic night out. I could hear them breath let alone listen to what they were talking about. They felt as uncomfortable as I did and I ate as fast as I could. The only other table available was directly outside the toilets so I wasn’t moving! So, the learning to staff - think about the seating arrangement in off-peak times. Tables of 4 can be used by less than 4 people too! Other than that, the staff were very friendly and nice so kudos to them. I tipped appropriately. Food was good and the crispy onions are very nice and a good alternative to chips, which I wouldn’t have eaten. Pricing reasonable compared to the other places I’ve dined at this week. I ate, I left, and would return if in San Fran again.

Excellent hamburgers and service

By daggertravel |

Excellent hamburgers: 2 x 4oz patties, nice sauce, lettuce, etc. with a side of delicious string fried onions, fries or salad. Other nice menu selections--but the hamburger is the main lunch feature. The service was amazing: friendly, informative, and attentive--eager to please. A go-to place for hamburgers.

Delightful brunch

By REC_23_12 |

Four of us had brunch here after walking from my hotel in the Financial District to the Palace of Fine Arts. It was a gorgeous day and their outside seating was a plus. Two in our party had the pulled pork hash; the portion was a bit small. My daughter and I decided to split the brunch burger and the veggie hash--what an excellent idea! The brunch burger was one of the best burgers I've ever eaten--quality beef, tasty bacon. We opted to get the greens with the burger, and they were fresh and tender. We arrived thirsty, and our server did a great job of keeping our water carafe filled.

Went for the burgers!

By ChuckLoonz |

No idea as to the rest of the menu, didn't care. I can't do onions, so I opted for the potatoes. Neither disappointed! Amazing flavor in the burger. Potatoes so good I had to ask what had been used to prepare that style of flavor, you will have to taste to understand. The Deviled Eggs with Smoked Salmon were scrumptious, the Caviar Deviled Eggs, they were off the charts. We were there looking for and early dinner on New Years Eve. They seated us and served us without a reservation. These people are top-notch and really worth the visit. Is the price high for a burger? No, not here! Other places yes. This is not your everyday burger, it is near a perfect burger. Incredible flavor that blends for a perfect taste. Please go visit them and share in the yumminess of perfection!

Great Burger and Atmosphere

By Greg H |

I recently ate dinner at Causwells for the first time and found the food and atmosphere to be excellent. I ordered Causwells' signature burger which was tasty, fresh and filling. I also had a delicious sweet potato appetizer. A good meal at moderate prices!

Good might be good, but the service was bad.

By Martin L |

Sadly comment on the food in this place, because the service was so lousy we didn’t stick around to eat it. Shame because it was a good looking menu - just needs a decent server.

Great neighborhood place in the Marina

By justplanatrip |

This restaurant has done a good job welcoming locals in the neighborhood. They have good service and good wines to choose from most of the time. They are known for the burger, but most of the food I have tried there is good. It is a very small restaurant, so make a reservation if you can. Located next to a movie theatre so you can eat and see a movie if you like!

Expensive and clunky

By Marina Z |

Expensive and nothing special at all! Cocktails $18-19 Beer 11 Wine 15 per glass Och chamber hall and wildly cold Stinks of some rotten rags((( A disgusting experience

Average Food In the Marina District Neighborhood

By Hobie58 |

Ate at Causwell’s on a Thurs night while on a SF trip with our family. The marina area neighborhood is really fun with great shops and local places. Causwell’s has a great vibe, but the menu is limited and the food was good, but not great. Note, They only serve wine, beer and soft drinks - not a full bar.

Brunch - twice and counting

By RoamingBrit007 |

Good spot for brunch and mimosas. Service is good and location on Chesnut is great. Seldom has a line and so no need to wait.

Great little cafe

By diane33405 |

Was not looking for this place but happened upon it after crossing the street from the bakery. Weekday, early lunch - We sat outside and it was sunny but weather was perfect. Both of us had salads - Beets/Kale and the other was a simple mixed green salad with chicken. Both were simple but had great dressings. Very satisfying for starting a day of walking all over the city!

Not bad. Not great. Not a French bistro.

By John G |

I'm not really sure why everyone loves this as much as they do. Everyone was pleasant and service was fine. But the food is average at best. The burger did look good but inconsistent from person to person. Not a bad choice. Not the best.

Great wine list

By Stevie B |

My boyfriend and I loved this place! The wine list had a very unique selection and the bartender did a great job helping us choose ones that we liked. We went on the last night of our visit and regretted that we hadn't tried this place sooner. Had we had known of this place we probably would have dropped by every night so that we could have enjoyed more of the menu!

They "lost" my credit card

By Nancy T |

First time in San Francisco, and on a friend's recommendation, decided that my first stop in SanFran would be Causwells for the burger.... The food was good, but the experience became a nightmare when the waitress "lost" my credit card. I went on to pay and she gave me the receipt without the card, she insisted that she had given me the card back, which she didn't. Took everything out of my purse three times and it wasn't there. My boyfriend and I walked all over the restaurant a few times and it wasn't on the floor. Called the manager and he didn't do anything, just without any worry said "just give me your number and I call you when we find it". Really? I had just arrived in SanFran, I'm a tourist, and I'll just wait until they call me if they find my credit card? So for the rest of my vacation I'll be with no credit card and only with the $200 cash that I had brought. I would have expected more from a manager after the fact that it was their employee who lost my credit card in less than a minute. I immediately called my bank to have the credit card cancelled and the restaurant flagged. A day or two later they called and said they "found it" on the floor.... Really sketchy when the place is super small, we walked around the restaurant a few times and the card was not on the floor. Make your own judgement, but in my opinion, it doesn't add up that my credit card was "lost and found on the floor". Needless to say, my vacation in SanFran started on the wrong foot.

Excellent time. Great Food.

By Tim B |

On a whim, we picked Causwells. Looked to Yelp for solid 4 star rating and $$. Great choice. The staff was super friendly and helpful...even gave us a fantastic recommendation for dinner that night. They're known for their burger and it did not disappoint.

Best place in the Marina

By Vlada P |

I've been here a few times - lunch, brunch, and dinner. The food is always amazing and the staff is super friendly. The grilled steak they have on lunch menu is the best!! A great steak, good portion size, and quick service all for about $15. Definitely my favorite spot on Chestnut street.

Thank You

By c_shane_cook |

Causwells made our night! We were celebrating our parents' 50th anniversary and everything was perfect - food, service and atmosphere. This neighborhood restaurant in the Marina District is definitely worth a shot - support them! We tried a wide range of entrées on the menu and all were good, different and enjoyable. Thanks to the staff for being nice and accommodating, all of us really appreciate it.

OMG The Onion Strings!!

By Sonia H |

My husband and I came here after reading an article about the best burgers in San Francisco and we were not disappointed. The burgers were juicy and delicious, topped with what tasted like homemade pickles, American "cheese" and lettuce. The star of the show was the onion strings: shaved onions tossed in a spiced flour and deep fried. The service was lovely, too.

Sensational burgers

By Scott M |

Thankfully the reviews we'd read stacked up to what we then expected. Service was very good and quick. 3 of us all had burgers and all thought they were brilliant. We got a couple of sides to share and the only disappointment was the mac and cheese as not remotely of restaurant or cafe quality. Still 5 stars as we'd go again and again to grab a burger for sure.

Nice and tasteful food

By Arjen73 |

Causwells is a nice, not to big restaurant serving good food. The lamb tasted great and the salad with pomegranate, feta and pear is also recommended. Even the fries were tasty. They offer sparkling water as complementary water as well and their choice of beers is great. Service is not super fast, but that is also not necessary in a place like this, where you can enjoy your dinner in a nice rythme!

Uncle Michael visiting

By kingthos |

Waiter was fantastic and the wine recommendation was perfect. The atmosphere was cozy and fun. Never had a bread pudding quit like that and it is well worth visiting just for that.

Great place for hipsters and all others

By MrTravelller |

A great stylish place, a architectural mixture of old and modern. The food was excellent! After the oder we did get already a offered small starter with house ricotta, mmmh what a tasty thing! After that we had a great salad and a delicious burger. They have a selection of good wines and pretty interesting beers. Go and try it out - i liked it pretty much!

Pretty mediocre

By Mark A |

Ok, maybe just me, but if you are gonna charge $16 for a burger one ought to be able to order medium rare. They use two patties and the burger is not as good as the Super Duper burger for $10. So instead ordered a pasta dish that was meh. Salad was great wine list strong. Waitress was depressing but the woman who helped her was great. We had a large party and no one was impressed. All in all will not return.

WOW - Was this a Find!

By keneverywhere |

Stumbled on this fabulous little eatery/bar by chance - very late one evening! Welcomed like we were long lost friends, and treated to one of Causwells famous cheese burgers, washed down with a fine Napa red wine or 3. No one seemed to be in a hurry to leave, so we stayed till closing. A must when you are in the area!

Really Good Food!

By karalyn84 |

This place is pretty much non-assuming if you walk by and to be quite frank, my husband didn't want to eat here. But, I read about it on a locals guide to San Fran so I figured we should give it a shot. Everything we had was very good. The menu is small but the food is fresh. We started with the ricotta (excellent) and shared the chicken & risotto (excellent). To top it off, we tried the donut bread pudding (I love bread pudding), but to be honest it tasted more like a soggy donut than real bread pudding. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't what I expected! I'd recommend Causwells!

Awesome

By gridbut |

We had heard they had the best burgers in SF. They certainly do. The two other family members both ordered the burger which comes with crispy onions. They both said they could not remember ever having a better burger anywhere. I ordered the baby back ribs which came with a cabbage slaw. Both were amazing. All three of us finished every bite. That does not happen often. Servers were friendly & had answers for all our questions. Really enjoyed the place.

Yummmm!

By Amy R |

We visited here on recommendation of the concierge at our hotel. It's just a cute little restaurant near the marina district (5 minute cab ride from Fishermans Wharf). The wait staff was pleasant and helpful but not pushy or intrusive. The food was so good. They encouraged sharing so we did - the burger was just awesome. Everything we tried was really good. Highly recommended.

Serving Til 11pm on Chestnut

By Hal J |

Causwells was the only place serving on Western Chestnut St. @ 10:30pm on a rainy Thursday night. I asked for a suggested white wine by the glass and the bartend-ress offered up a Viognier, which tasted like a Chardy at that late hour. Whatever, it was quite quaffable. I order the home-made ricotta w/ lavosh and a side of sweet potato ane for $22 it made for a great sharable snack. I wanted to try the trout main but it was too late for a BIG meal. Other reviewers have touted it; I'll be back.

Great burger, good vibe

By jamesamar |

We went here with friends who live in the Marina, a great spot for lunch. It was very busy, and took a little while to accommodate our booking. But the meal was excellent (top burger), service a little haphazard. Atmosphere was great.

Staff were amazing

By Joanna M |

My boyfriend and I travelled to San Francisco for our first trip together. We had completed all of the attractions that we wanted, and had a free day. We decided to visit a few bars/restaurants around our hotel. We stumbled upon Causwells and chatted with the server Alicia. She was very friendly and offered some of her favourite/local places. Shortly after, another staff member (Roo) offered his advice. Shortly after then, the GM (Alvin) came to chat with us to offer his suggestions. We were absolutely happy with the service, the beer was great (San Francisco brewed), and we were very impressed with how personal and approachable the staff were. We were chatting and making jokes like we had known each other for a long time. We did not have a chance to eat as we were doing a "drinks only" bar-hop- but we would have been happy to go back there at any time.

Stay away if you don't want a burger

By SDS |

Reputation for Causwells may well be founded on their burgers, but if you are not having a burger there is no reason to visit. Our service was awful, items we ordered were forgotten and we watched as the waiter messed up a nearby table's order as well. The non-burger items on the menu were simply 'meh'.

Great food and open late

By Mario0007 |

We found Causwell's late on a Thursday evening when everywhere seemed to be closed. They're open until 1am, not sure how late the kitchen is open but we were served sometime around 11pm. Causwell's is a small place, tucked into a wing of a theater building, we almost missed it. Great little dining room with a modest bar and a nice vibe. Everyone was pleased with their food, no complaints. I had the Chicken which is cooked in a tasty beer based sauce (there was a fancy name for it that I can't recall but it was good). Others got various salads and the burger and it was all good. The servers were friendly and the wine selection decent. Would go back when in SF again.

BEST BURGER we've ever had

By srowles12 |

We'll admit, we went for the burgers, so we can't speak to anything else on the menu, but these burgers were AMAZING. I'm not even a big burger person, but I had to see what all the hype was about. The meat literally melted in your mouth, and the bun was on point. The onion strings had great flavor as well. We did order the corn bread for an appetizer and it was on par with corn bread in the south (where we live). Overall, if you enjoy burgers, you MUST go here!!

Burger heaven

By Kev E |

Went looking for a nice burger on Chestnut and saw several locals tucking into one outside Causwells. Unfortunately when I looked at the menu I my eyes fixed on the jerk chicken which I went for whilst I watched my wife salivate over the burger I wanted. Then again I too was oozing bliss with the chicken so top marks for both. Brilliant food, well prepared and presented and really friendly staff. Food great value.....drinks a little over priced but didn't spoil the dinner.

Ok experience

By mgoblue81 |

The overall experience was ok. They are known for their burgers, which I thought was decent, nothing great. I had a manhattan, which was far too heavy on the vermouth.

Great brunch spot

By ceceontheroad |

My family has eaten here twice in the past 3 months. Both times the food was great. The ricotta with lemon and honey is fantastic. My husband loves the burger with an egg on it. Last time we were there, they gave us a free sample of the french toast bites. Now we have to go back so we can eat those again.

Cool neighbourhood vibe. Faultless service.

By beachbuddy10 |

Late brunch/ early lunch so we had the place largely to ourselves. A warm and genuinely friendly member of staff looked after us like we were family. She gave recommendations, took our order and let us prattle on about Mrs BB’s birthday World Tour. This was our last meal in SF. Had it been our first, we would have come back every day. Need I say the Americana burger was awesome? (Two Brits, 15th Oct 12:00)

Fresh and hot

By dd-bionic |

Having just arrived in the city from a long flight, we were starving. Sort of stumbled on Causwells b/c we were in the area. Turned out to be a good stop. Their menu is not extensive, but the food was tasty. We were there at 2:00 in the afternoon and practically had the place to ourselves. Hubby had a burger that he said was very tasty (although there was something drippy that made his bun soggy) and I had a delicious salmon sandwich. Both were served with fresh greens in a light dressing.

Good food, but OVERPRICED

By Becca_6737 |

Not a huge place, seating was limited. We stopped in for lunch. The food tasted great, but it was overpriced.

Good place for lunch when in the Marina District.

By Eric E |

We had sandwiches here for lunch on a beautiful sunny day. Sat at a sidewalk table. The sandwiches were excellent and we enjoyed watching the local scene.

Great cocktails, but also taste..

By Sarah W |

What I noticed immediately: They make ultra-chic cocktails! They look really fantastic. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling well and therefore I couldn’t taste any of these great cocktails. The place is very crowded and you should reserve. Even with a reservation you have to wait a minute. The service was absolutely fine. The food was not outstanding but it tasted quite good. For my feeling a little bit too price intensive, especially with the drinks. A Coke cost us $6. I already find that a lot... otherwise I can recommend the store. I wasn't in the bathroom, so I can't write anything about it.

Unhelpful service

We went in here hoping to eat a meal. Having recently been diagnosed as coeliac we looked over the menu outside and it seemed there were at least a couple of suitable options so we went in. We were seated and ordered drinks which came pretty promptly. When I then asked the waiter for allergen advice on the menu he was not very knowledgeable but did go and ask the chef some questions for me. Having found that what I wanted was not in fact gluten free he suggested I could switch out the carb option on another choice to make it so. I didn’t fancy this item but asked if another option on the menu could be switched to the dish I was interested in. The waiter seemed like he was becoming less interested in being helpful as this exchange went on, I was asking very reasonable questions in a polite manner. He eventually said (without going to ask the chef to check) that the chef was very particular about what went with what on the menu and wouldn’t be able to switch what I wanted. At this point we were very frustrated with this poor customer service and decided to leave. I therefore cannot comment on the food here (which may well have been delicious) but I wouldn’t return here as this waiter was extremely unhelpful. The vibe was quite hipster in terms of decor, patrons etc.

Delicious Burgers

This place was recommended to us by someone I knew who lived in the area. We got there a little early for dinner. No reservation but since they were not crowded yet, they seated us. We ordered the burger and it was phenomenal. I was hesitant to get it with all they listed served on the burger, but glad I did. The flavors meshed well together in hands down one of the best hamburgers I have ever eaten in my life. Service was excellent and everything served timely. Highly recommend this place!

Enjoyable!

Had an enjoyable and pleasurable time here! We went here on the recommendation of our son and simply loved it! This place is amazing! The staff, including the manager, are professional and attentive. Our food was so tasty! We had the burgers, summer salad, trout, corn bread, peppers, and cocktails! All were so delicious and simply enjoyable! I feel in love with this place and can not wait to come back! Highly recommend this place!

European bistro feel with mostly meat options

By Jackie_R_7289 |

The thing I liked most about Causwells was the cute, intimate atmosphere. They succeed in creating a cozy European bistro-feel to the restaurant. It'd be a good date spot, but also a nice place to grab a quieter drink at the bar in the sometimes crazy Marina. Food-wise, it's not the easiest spot for vegetarians, but there are options. I went with a friend and we ordered dinner entrees and no appetizers, but the appetizers have a few veg options (salads, house made ricotta, etc.). There was one dinner entree that was veg - Hen of Woods Mushrooms, including: mushroom, fava bean, quinoa and pistachio. To be fair, I went relatively hungry. The serving size is good, but not massive, so I'd order a side if you get this dish and are on the hungrier side. The flavors were really neat in this dish though. The fava bean was blended, so the texture was quite smooth and a nice, bright green color. The quinoa portion was smallish, but well-flavored/herbed. The mushrooms were very large and had to be cut with a knife. These were not as well-seasoned, but good if taken in a bite with other flavors on the plate. The pistachio (very minimal on the dish), added a nice crunch and salty flavor. I also ordered a side of broccoli rabe, which the menu noted was cooked with garlic and chili. The broccoli was quite flavorless though. I'd see a chili flake or two, but it mostly tasted like stewed broccoli. For dessert, we split the chocolate pot de creme. The menu says this is with coconut and sea salt. It certainly had a very deep chocolate flavor to it. The salt was very present (coconut wasn't really at all), and while it added a sharp contrast to the deepness of the chocolate, I think a creme topping would be a better contrast and cut the bitterness of the chocolate a bit more. Something was weird about the chocolate, where it seemed to have a wetness to it - can't explain that quite too well, and it didn't really takeaway from it, but I've certainly had better chocolate desserts before. At least the dark chocolate satisfied my chocolate need a bit. Service was present but not too friendly. Quite the opposite of the European bistro feel, as she seemed to keep pushing us a bit, even though the restaurant was pleasantly busy but not packed and no one was waiting. Food and drinks came out promptly though. Overall, I think it's a better spot for meat eaters than vegetarians, but the restaurant itself is quite cute, and could certainly be a good spot for drinks and appetizers before going elsewhere in the neighborhood for a main course.

What a burger

By Bob S |

When we mentioned to the server that we were from CT, she said, "Then you must be here for our burgers!" Who knew? So we had their burger -- and while it was arguably the most expensive burger we've ever had, it was truly the best burger that we've ever had.

Great food in SF

Four of us had dinner at Causwells, and we were not disappointed. The burger, supposedly ranked as one of the best burgers in the country, lived up to its billing. If it wasn't the best burger I have ever had, it was certainly close. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Our waiter was patient, answering questions willingly and cheerfully. All in all the service was outstanding. We were all pleased with our meals, and the overall experience was first rate.
