Vibes & Deliciousness!

By Suki Thind |

This place is a VIBE! The building itself is vintage and all of the decor is so intricate and gives you a warm, nostalgic feeling. We came on a Friday night and there was a DJ playing some great ambient tunes. But make no mistake, the food is the highlight of this magnificent establishment! The Baba Ganoush was so different from anything I've had before and it was DELICIOUS. We also had the King Salmon Skewer and the Spiced Chicken Skewer. Both were AMAZING and the chicken literally melted in my mouth. We also had the Chicken Schnitzel, which was great also. The cocktails and desserts are also great, and the service was friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back to try more dishes and have a good night!

Great food and location!

Located in the ever developing Highland Park area of Los Angeles. Very unique historic building with great decor and atmosphere. Had drinks and couple of appetizers. The service was excellent also.

Very happening place!! Lively bar scene, terrific middle Eastern food, great service! Not far from downtown.

I'd heard great things from friends about Checker Hall so my husband and I decided to check it out. That whole area of Highland Park is very happening - some really neat bars and hot spots - the kind with no signage. Checker Hall also has concerts - there wasn't one the night we went but we will definitely go back for a show. The building is a historic site so the whole place is really cool. It was St. Patricks Day so I had a special margarita made with chlorophyll - how awesome is that? A healthy green margarita! It was delicious. We started with a chicken skewer, hummus and falafel. Gluten free items are clearly marked on the menu so I was in heaven. The falafel were excellent (and gluten free!). The chicken was very tender and tasted great. By the time my fish came the edge was definitely off my hunger, but I loved it. Very flavorful. The food was really terrific - we love middle Eastern food and this did not disappoint. I'd go to hang out at the bar but definitely stay for a great meal. I recommend a reservation, especially if there is a show that night.

Special date night

This is the perfect place if you want to go on a special date or want a nice dining experience. The interior has original old world charm with a narrow balcony overlooking the street. The food items can be a bit pricey but you will appreciate the quality and flavors. Our waitress was first rate and there was no long wait to receive our food order. If you only want to drink you can sit at the impressive bar.

Hidden gem

I was visiting from out of town and came upon this hidden gem. This was by far the best dining experience I had in ages. The food was over the top delicious with layered flavors and spices and freshness and served to perfection. The fish, tajin, tapas, salad and desserts were all incredible. I only wish this restaurant nationwide.

Atmospheric, Highly original and satisfying dinner.

Very atmospheric space thoughtfully renovated — it feels hip while preserving historical charm. Features a great bar in the center surrounded by tables for diners. The bar features interesting mixed drinks and the dinner menu is distinctive and impressive. Dishes are great for sharing. Several vegetable side dishes with rich and aromatic sauces are standouts and would be fine mains for vegetarians. Excellent fries with a punch. we also sampled two fish dishes, both of which were excellent. We had a reserved booth in a corner— when we were there the place was packed on a Tuesday night. Several balcony tables had views of the street below.

DESERVES A HIGHER RATING!

In LA, Highland Park for a month and on our last evening to go out for dinner this is where we came. What a happening place, the vibe is so Highland Park. Our small plates were excellent: SHISHITO PEPPERS, BOREK, and BRUSSELS SPROUTS, my wife said they were the best she has ever had, our drinks: smooth and refreshing that I had two - Green Room Gimlet, and dessert was an excellent finish. The place was jammed, with diners and folks attending the live music next door. Service was friendly and efficient. It certainly met our expectations and defines the coolness of Highland Park! I would recommend to anyone and will return when we are in LA again.

This place is absolutely so nice. The bar is so pretty and the entire place is a whole vibe. They have huge tables perfect for large groups and smaller tables near the balcony. I didn't eat food here and just had drinks. I sat at the bar and had the Hidden Door which was such a smooth drink. I need to come back here and and try their food.

Great bar scene

Met up with a group of friends prior to an evening event. Fab cocktails and superb food. The appetizer plates were quite large. Yummy!! Parking available across the street.
