Upstairs Asian

By ScottEP |

Up a couple of flights of stairs on the beach side of Girard. We dined on the patio. Attentive service. Tasty sushi. They didn't mind altering dishes for vegetarian (tofu for chicken). No-nonsense seaweed salad and excellent spicy cucumber salad. The curries at the next table looked good too. Reasonable prices. Very casual.

Tonight I tried a few delightful items. I tried the chicken/potatoes, the garlic chicken noodles and of course the sushi. The professionalism and location is perfect for a nice meal.

A Culinary Journey for Two: Date Night Delights at Cherrywine

By Zi M |

Ah, La Jolla. The sun-kissed coastline, the gentle ocean breeze, and the promise of a perfect date night. This past weekend, my partner and I embarked on a culinary adventure at Cherrywine Sushi and Burmese Cuisine, and let me tell you, it was an experience that tantalized our taste buds and warmed our hearts. Cherrywine's intimate setting immediately charmed us. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow on the sleek, modern décor. Ocean views peeked through the palm trees, beckoning us closer to the coast. We snagged a cozy table for two and couldn't wait to dive into the menu, a delightful fusion of Japanese and Burmese specialties. For our appetizer, we shared the Tea Leaf Salad, a vibrant Burmese classic. Tender lettuce, crunchy peanuts, and toasted chickpeas mingled with a symphony of pickled ginger, fresh herbs, and a tangy lime dressing. Each bite was an explosion of textures and flavors, a refreshing prelude to the culinary journey ahead. Next, we indulged in the Rainbow Dragon Roll, a visual and culinary masterpiece. Fresh tuna, salmon, albacore, and avocado peeked from beneath a vibrant blanket of seaweed, drizzled with a sweet ponzu glaze. Each slice revealed a delightful harmony of textures – the melt-in-your-mouth fish, the creamy avocado, the satisfying crunch of cucumber – all dancing on a bed of perfectly seasoned rice. But the star of the show, for me, was the Burmese Coconut Noodle Soup. Fragrant with lemongrass and galangal, the golden broth cradled springy rice noodles, tender chunks of chicken, and a kaleidoscope of colorful vegetables. Each spoonful was a warm hug, a comforting blend of savory and slightly sweet notes that left me wanting more. My partner opted for the Spicy Garlic Noodles with Jumbo Shrimp, a dish that lived up to its name. The plump shrimp, cooked to juicy perfection, were infused with the aromatic warmth of garlic and chilies, creating a dance of heat and sweetness on the palate. The springy noodles, slicked with a light sauce, offered a delightful contrast to the spicy shrimp, making for a perfectly balanced bite. As we sipped on fragrant jasmine tea and watched the sun dip below the horizon, we reminisced about the flavors that had tantalized our senses. Cherrywine had taken us on a culinary journey, weaving together the delicate artistry of Japanese sushi with the vibrant, soulful essence of Burmese cuisine.

Friendly service, great ambience and the La Jolla roll highly recommended. Super delicious! We ate at the outdoor seating overlooking the street, view of ocean in the background.

Fresh Flavors and a Standout Salad

By mom2woo |

We went for a date night and were genuinely impressed. The sushi was incredibly fresh, the jasmine tea was fragrant and calming, and the staff made us feel welcomed and well cared for. The highlight of the evening was the Burmese Tea Leaf Salad—bold, bright, and absolutely unforgettable. A perfect balance of flavor and texture!

Excellent lunch - going back for more

Asked our hotel for a suggestion for good Chinese food nearby. While this isn’t Chinese, we were so pleasantly surprised by how tasty it was! Daughter and I shared chicken stir fry noodles - simple but very flavorful. Husband had a red chicken curry - similar to a Thai curry but lighter. He likes it quite hot but you could still taste the actual flavor of the sauce - excellent! Going back again before we leave and next time we come back to La Jolla for sure!

Great view, food and service

We showed up on a weeknight with no reservation. There was no wait for our party of 4, and we were seated with an amazing (partial) ocean view. The staff made boba samples for my child to try. Seaweed salad was good, the cucumber salad was a bit different than I’m used to, the sashimi was all fresh and delicious. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. Would definitely come back.

excellent selection, food and service

Lots of choices with several appetizers, sushi, salads, poke, seafood and noodles. We wanted a light meal so we split the Jack noodles which were supposedly Burmese - they didn't really have any spice but they were buttery egg noodles with chicken and green onions and done well. We also had shrimp tempura that was nice and light as well as the edamame. The Chai tea latte had large tapioca pearls in it - little too much gel for me so next time I would get without. Service was very quick although we went on a not so busy Tuesday night. Very reasonable prices and the place was very modern and clean. The only downside is if you are disabled or not fit you will have a difficult time getting there as it is up 26 flight of steps or you can ask where the elevator is but still have 5 steps so not wheelchair accessible. They are also on the top of Girard at Prospect so if you have to park below you also have to travel up a steep sidewalk to ge there. Please click helpful if you found this review useful.

Lovely Asian Restuarant downtown La Jolla

You might miss this spot as it is not at street level!! Go up the stairs and enjoy some delicious food. My granddaughter wanted a California Roll for lunch and though not on the menu they made her one and she polished it off!! My "Roll" (different than hers) was delicious as well. They accommodated my vegan husband with steamed veggies with noodles. Nice atmosphere both inside and out. We sat outside and enjoyed a nice breeze. Very friendly owners/operators!!

Delicious!!

Food was great! We sat on the outdoor balcony with an ocean view. Service was excellent. Prices reasonable for the area. I loved the tempura and others in my party really enjoyed the sushi. We would recommend this restaurant for couples and families alike.
