decided to stay in for dinner

By susantobey levy |

They had a nice happy hour and the waitress offered us the specials and made sure we were well taken care of. THe food, we had calamari and a salad and a rockin desert was better than average!

Don't bother

By Ava R |

Had four peoples my table. Everyone didn't like their meal. From a burger tithe grilled romaine flat steak salad. Very poor

Great food and beer, good value

By museumgoer |

We were staying at the Chestnut Hill Hotel and had dinner here one evening in the cellar room. Very elegant and cozy setting. Tasty, well-prepared food and a terrific draft beer menu, all reasonably priced.

Will definitely be a return!

By zerman17604 |

Stopped in for lunch on a pre-Christmas Saturday afternoon to some incredible pub fare cuisine; will make it a point to return again for dinner. Ate in first floor bistro/bar area which was very friendly, very busy with happy people. It has a real neighborhood feeling in this hotel dining area. Delicious fare and drinks, excellent service, very reasonably priced.

Neighborhood Gem at Chestnut Hill

By Grizzly9957 |

Staying at the collocated Chestnut Hill Hotel we noticed the large crowd of what looked to be mostly local al fresco diners each night as we returned to our room and took this as a good sign. After getting the nonsense run-around from wait staff at 2 downtown restaurants (including the highly rated Oyster House) before we could even place an order on our last night in Philly, we headed back to Chestnut Hill to see if the local crowds were right, and we weren't disappointed a bit. Taking seats at the bar, we were greeted by the friendly, accommodating and ebullient Megan. After being served a perfectly shaken dry martini, including the requested blue cheese olives without argument or excuses (unlike the Oyster House), we settled in over a complimentary basket of home made chips to peruse the eclectic menu. The bride went for the Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad, while I chose the grilled trout. Both fish selections were perfectly prepared and flavorful. Nicoise salad was delightfully dressed with crisp greens, fresh green beans and flavorful chunks of potato. Trout was accompanied by deliciously sautéed fresh spinach and a pleasant rice pilaf. Each entrée was generously portioned and an excellent value. We understand why the locals seem to flock here, and if we were locals, we would be regulars too. Highly recommended for service and value.

Very good salad

Staying at hotel next door. Stopped in to get dinner to go. They were happy to accommodate. The bar is small and frequented by locals. Really cute place and good. I had the entree steak salad it was excellent! The bartender was friendly and efficient.

Simple and delicious

I regret not having a bigger appetite! The sights and smells of the meals around me were mouth-watering, but my Caeser salad with chicken was great and more than enough to fill me up.

Yes, You Can Get Excellent Food and Service

By Jamiekrbs |

We loved the food at The Chestnut Grill. Out of our 5 visits in a week, we were continually impressed with the presentation, flavor, great service and value of the Chestnut Grill. Our favorites were the Lamb burger and the Tarragon Chicken Fettucini. Quaint and cozy restaurant in a great location for shopping and walking. Can't wait to return!

Good Food And Good Vibes

By PhillyShaney |

I have been a fan of the Chestnut Hill Grill for years! I enjoy the laid back vibe and the staff are usually friendly; attentive and the food is consistently good! While my Mom and Auntie were visiting Philly..we found ourselves in Chestnut Hill around dinner time..not mine...the early bird special time (4:30 or so....lol) and the Grill was open and ready! My Mom has the lamb and Auntie enjoyed a large salad and chicken dish! They enjoyed how well the meal was prepared and flavors....oh you ask-what did I have —Drinks..liquid dinner..as you can imagine keeping guests entertained is exhausting and mind numbing at times...so I needed a pick me up and it helped! Lol I was pleased with the value of the dinner along with the good service!

Nice evening

By CRT Traveller |

Lovely dinner outside. Great people watching. Good calamari and excellent avocado gazpacho. Delicious steak and filet salad for mains. Steak had excellent roast veggies. Service solid, even though things were very busy. No desserts. But they looked good. Overall, enjoyable and reasonable.

Nice, local, family friendly place

By jimblackjim |

The Chestnut Grill is a nice, local, family friendly spot. There are several tables in the bar area which is cozy and has a lot of character. The main dining rooms are in the basement, so there are no windows, but still it is a pleasant atmosphere. The best feature of the place is the outdoor dining on the front porch of the hotel and along the alleyway that leads to the farmers market. Centrally located in Chestnut Hill, it is the place to see and be seen. The menu is not extensive, but does have a good mix of salads, sandwiches and entrees. The food is good. They are not trying for haut cuisine. You can find many other dining options in Chestnut Hill, but the Grill is always a good option.

Interesting place

By Weddingwoman |

This place is very quaint and interesting- the bar and limited seating is available upstairs but the main dining area is in the 'basement' and somewhat claustrophobic....note! No cell phone signals available.... The cocktails were small and pricey and the wine list was limited- the waiter left much to be desired but the food was good and made up for it. The dinner menu is small - we had several appetizers including the calamari, mussels, wings, lamb and coconut shrimp and they were all Delicious! as for dinner? The Angus steak and Shrimp pasta was great but DO NOT order the chicken marsala unless you like your marsala in a whole breast form- it was dry and you needed a microscope to find the 'exotic mushrooms!! the overall experience was average-would have loved it to be Great since we were celebrating my sisters birthday but c'est la vie!

Good service, marvellous beer, good food

By johnnydogmatic |

It was a quiet day, between Christmas and New Year, when we went. We had booked a table for nine, and the service was excellent. Dazzling range of beers and a good menu. Would certainly return!

A not so good stop in chestnut hill

By Matthew R |

Went here and was not a big fan of the menu change, I liked the old neighborhood bar feel with a decent beer list. Servers were inattentive and everything was just so so

Execution is the key

By cpers0n |

We had burgers for lunch. They had interesting takes like a bacon and brie burger with carmelized onions but the key was that they were prepared just as ordered with good fresh ingredients. The beer list is solid, I had Fuller's London Pride and paid probably a buck less than I expected for it. The service was casual but quite efficient and friendly.

Nothing Special

By ThriftyTravelerHere |

I would eat here with my family because they liked the outdoor seating. I just never felt there was anything special about the food although it was good.

Very nice dinner

By RobertLevenson |

We had passed this venue many, many times and always saw people sitting outdoors enjoying what looked like many interesting dishes, so with friends we decided to finally stop there for dinner. Although many people were sitting outside, we thought it was a little too chilly, so we opted to sit inside. Got a booth near the bar, and thoroughly enjoyed our dinners, which included onion soup, chicken wings, ultimate burgers, and spicy asian shrimp salad. Everything was quite tasty and well-prepared. Not only were the dishes quite good, but we also enjoyed the house margarita. All-in-all, we had a very enjoyable experience at Chestnut Grill and will definitely stop there again.

Chestnut Hill

Good food, fun bar and lovely outside eating. Did not like the downstairs as I felt too claustrophobic.

Great place to eat for most people

By davidsonknoll |

My daughter (17) and I had had dinner there last night. We are on a college trip and wanted to sit down for a nice comfortable meal after walking around looking at colleges all day. We had a pedicure down the street and decided to eat at our hotel restaurant. So we walked in there in jeans, sweats and sandles (so we didn't smear our freshly painted toes) no one even looked at us. There was a bar upstairs with a few tables and then you walked in the basement for more tables. The walls were stone (I think) and the atmosphere was kind of a red feeling with a low lights, but not dark. We sat at booth. The menu was great b/c you could have appys, or full fancy meal or a bar meal. We chose a bar meal. I had a lamb burger and my daughter had a hamburger (should be a beef burger). I also had 2 glasses of red wine. Service was good.

Great Brunch!

By kingman_86 |

We eat here all the time! Their brunches and desserts are so good!! Great service, great food! The one item I did not like in this place is the ribs! They were dry and not very flavorful! B&B burger is great! Brunch: Southern breakfast sandwich, french toast, pancakes, croque madamme, benedict and almost everything else was great!

Always fun

By Aboush |

Great location, free parking, excellent food and service. On a nice day, sitting on the large porch or side area under an umbrella is perfect!

Sunday brunch with the family

By DelJack |

We visited Chestnut Hill Sunday morning to do some shopping and decided to have brunch/lunch at the Chestnut Grill. The food and service were very good. If you are in the area I suggest that you give try their burgers. My burger was about 4 inches tall! Of course, the onion rings probably added at least an inch. The tomatoe was fresh and flavorful; almost like it was picked in the summer.

Paris Bistro is dleightful

Excellent cuisine, friendly service, charming atmosphere. Be sure to make a reservation as the place fills up fast, even on week nights!

Best Dinner in Chestnut Hill

By alworkman99 |

This is our "go to" spot for a local diner. Prime rib sandwich is delicious, every time. Good choice of salads. Quick service and not too pricey. Cozy restaurant and bar. Don't be afraid to be seated in the basement, it's not at all "basementy"

Awesome Andre

By Elise S |

I return here almost every Friday, not only is the food superb, get soup & cocunut shrimp, hard to find. And EXCELLENT service from Andre, I ask for him because of his hospitality & customer service. Randomly got seat in his section 1st time & continue to ask for him. I always enjoy speaking with him. Especially since he likes to fish like my Dad did for many years. This young man is dedicated to his work & a friendly face.

Great ambiance, especially when you can dine al fresco

By Donna B |

We enjoy eating at the Chestnut Grill when we go to Chestnut Hill. There are is both outdoor and indoor dining, usually a much longer wait for an outdoor table. Typically we order the special of the day but every meal we ate there was good.

Mmmmmmmm......

By tbwMaine |

We were staying in the Chestnut Hill Inn, so dined here one evening---same premises as hotel but different ownership. We both wanted comfort food, so chose the brisket, which was served with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetable medley. It hit the spot after a long day. The brisket was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the roast vegetables were tasty. The mashed potatoes were good, but but the consistency a little thin. Server was efficient, polite and friendly without being intrusive--she knew her job and did it very well. Pleasant surroundings, good food. What's not to love? Only downside is we live 500 miles away.

Fantastic atmosphere and delicious food

By Teresa J |

The chef must be terrific, because each person in our party found their entree absolutely perfect. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, the music and the serving staff were awesome, too. Besides all of that, the Toll House Pie and the Turtle Cheesecake are worth every penny -- big enough to share if need be but do not miss these amazing treats.

Why Chestnut Hill

By Herstory_62 |

With trendy cuisine (plenty of choices for vegans), glorious glistening salads & huge portions, the Grill & Cafe illustrate why it's so much fun to visit & dine in Chestnut Hill - especially outdoors on a summer day.

great value for great food.

By vivneligan |

the food was excellent and great value.the service was very fast and the food quality was excellent.

Food/Staff/Atmosphere - all winners!

By Jill C |

I ate here two nights in a row because night #1 was such a success. I ate lighter meals but there was a lot of variety. The entrees looked good, too. Very friendly staff, fast service, eat inside or out - I tried both. I preferred inside because the outside has a fair amount of street noise. Very nice pub atmosphere inside. MUST HAVE - Cheddar Ale Soup!!!

Nice food

By jbackus8746 |

I enjoyed the food served here. One day the grill was open outside for seating the second day I stayed it was too cold so I ate inside.I think the food was priced well and tasted good.

Great food and atmosphere

By Char W |

This was my first visit and I was very impressed. It’s located right next to the Chestnut Hotel and the marketplace in Germantown. The outside cafe has beautiful artwork. Our waiter was great and went above and beyond to accommodate our drink order. He made wonderful suggestions. Prices are reasonable and I will definitely go again.

An oasis during a busy trip.

By 26happytravels |

A place I love to go for a decent meal for a great price. Great bar, lots of locals and tourists. You can't go wrong!

Still the best burgers in CH

By nontrendytraveler |

These are the best burgers in Chestnut Hill, hands down. I have been here numerous times and always love it. The staff is very friendly and the food is always good, the drinks, great! The only reason I gave it a "very good" this time is the change in menu. They took off the delicious salmon club, a favorite. They also modified the crab cake sandwich. It used to be heavenly, literally the best crab cake sandwich ever, but now it is heavily breaded and fried (takes away the flavor) and on a regular roll as a opposed to the moist brioche roll. Please, please, go back to the original recipe! I would come every few months for this!

Deteriorated over time, average food, poor presentation, inattentive service

By ObiePowers |

Thursday was a quiet moment to take lunch here, my fourth time eating at the Chestnut Grill and Sidewalk Cafe. But things are not so good. The downstairs seating is tired and the seats badly split. Tables are also knocked about and distressed (but not in a good way!). My salad had not been cleaned properly, with dying, discolored lettuce left on the plate. The leek soup was pretty good but the chicken sandwich was brought out with the walnut-bread not toasted but burned black, twisted, hard and inedible. It was sent back and the top-toast was replaced but they did not bother to change the lower toast which was also burned. The restaurant was not busy and there seemed to be more servers than needed. Perhaps out of boredom, they reduced their observations on the needs of diners, and service was slothful. This is not a cheap option in an area bursting with good cafes and restaurants, great food and better pricing. The hotel has spent a lot on refurbishing rooms recently and some are beautiful, but they have reduced spending on essentials in the grill and training for the staff in both the kitchen and in service. The three of us will not be returning. What it does have going for it, are a few sidewalk tables where you can watch the world go by. In ther respects, this is not a disappointment.

The RIGHT choice in Chestnut Hill

By vinooram |

Recent trip to visit our daughter and grandkids in Elkins Park Our son was also with us We decided to go to historic Chestnut Hill and enjoy the many shops etc Also had to drop our son at the SEPTA station for his early trip back home Columbus Day was a partial holiday, so the little town was buzzing Luckily had done some research on Lunch options and opted for one of three, all next to each other. While Green Soul was in the back, the Bistro and Chestnut Grill offered seating outdoors and both were available. Made the RIGHT decision with Chestnut Grill and a table for 4 on the porch. A little chilly, even with the sun, but they had heaters My son and daughter had the 'seafood soup' bowls and shared a HUGE Catfish sandwich. My wife had the Shrimp with Asian noodles and I ordered the Crab cake sandwich. A bottle of Napa sauvignon blanc to wash down the meal. ALL dishes were superb (the SHRIMP was jumbo) and good size portions. The bowls of soup were literally large soup bowls and didn't need the catfish sandwich. Service was friendly and relaxed. We were fortunate to get our table when we did, as soon after, the porch filled up ALTOGETHER, an excellent family dining experience and watching the 'street traffic'. Parking in Chestnut Hill is RIDICULOUS. We had to park at a distance (with coin meters). Because of this we had to rush our meal as our son had to catch a train. The other negative is the OUTRAGEOUS price for bottle of wine Else this establishment deserves FIVE stars

Great Service and Food This Time

By Dave_and_Gail |

We go to here about once every couple months especially in the Spring and Summer because of the outdoor dining. This time in late September we had perfect service from Carmen P. She was outstanding. In the past we have had less than adequate service there, however. Carmen was professional, polite, refilled beverages without asking, seemed to anticipate every need without being over-bearing. Two in our party of 4 had the Roasted Salmon ($19.95) which was not-fishy, buttery-soft, and tasty. The coconut shrimp appetizer ($11.95) was liked and shared by all. We will definitely return. Thanks Carmen P.!

Calm between the storms

By Ann H |

The outside air was finally cooling down, with bad thunderstorms in the area, but the sky above was clear. Folks at the Chestnut Grill were happy to seat us outside. It was a beautiful evening between storms. as usual, the Grill did not disappoint. Flat Iron Steak Salad was quite deelish! Grilled romaine topped with grilled onion, peppers and cheese with a healthy amount of sliced steak. My only complaint - the plate was too small. Cutting the steak caused salad everywhere. I'll order it again for sure. The storms stayed at bay and it was a beautiful al fresco meal in the Avenue.

Good, with a glitch

By Marco B |

Pleasant sidewalk tables, nice whimsical offerings and tempting cocktails (but not for me at lunch). My hamburger was overdone for a medium and my friend's salad with chevre and walnuts was not the best quality romaine: the leaves had lived a long life, I tasted, they were leathery and too dark. It could have been a four star otherwise.

Inside is more of a pub

By pat q |

We sat at a booth inside and it had the perfect pub feel. You could also talk. Loved the coconut shrimp. I had an excellent salmon dish. Nice selection of beers on tap. Will definitely go back the next time I'm in Philly.

Saturday Lunch

By WasOnce |

When we walked in the door, the hostess asked if it was OK to be seated “downstairs”, which we found out = the decidedly less charming section of the restaurant. Waitress was friendly and efficient. My wife enjoyed her salad, I had the (impossible to eat with anything but a knife and fork because it comes between two flimsy pieces of nan) lamb burger which was nicely prepared and might have had a bigger impact on my hunger had a few more French fries made it on to the plate. We drank water, the bill was $27.00 before tip.

A great stop in Philly's Chestnut Hill neighborhood

By Southernnow |

We were staying in the attached Chestnut Hill Hotel, so this grill was an easy choice - although it is not run by the same folks. Comfortable atmosphere; sports bar TV's; great menu; happy hours; cold brews; salads & burgers are very good, as are the liver & onions if you're so inclined.

Won't wait on me

By Ann H |

Beautiful day, people sitting on patio, stopped for lunch. Waited. Owners came to talk to one table but dismissed me as they went by. 10 minutes later, went inside to be seated. Ask waitress, she goes to get someone. Owner asks me what I need. He tells me a few minutes. There are few customers, no one too busy. I left. I come here all the time but sometimes the service is poor.

Still Thinking About It!

By Rashiid K C |

So, my wife and I were hanging out last week and decided to catch a quick bite for lunch. We'd been to the Grill many times before, but on this particular day I had the most memorable piece of salmon I've ever had. It was pleasant to look at, but after the initial glance, I wasn't there to appreciate the way my food looked. I ordered a Salmon Caesar salad. While I've had better caesars from other restaurants, this salmon was incredible! It was cooked to perfection! It had a little char to it, seasoned perfectly, it was moist, and complemented the greens in my salad impeccably. It's been on my mind since that day, and I can't wait to go back to have another portion. We always prefer to sit outdoors when we go. The ambience in the dining areas is a bit dark for our taste. When the weather permits...dining outside is most enjoyable! The service is always attentive and courteous, and the experience won't bankrupt you. They're very affordable. You'll get your money's worth! This is a place to go especially if you're local!

A little gem

By Seascape999 |

This is my favorite place in Chestnut Hill. Reasonably priced and reliably good food. The menu is ample but not huge, but everything is tasty and carefully prepared.

yNight and Da

By Ellen Dolson Howse |

The first time we went was at night. We wanted to eat outside but there was not space so they put us downstairs. The hostess and the waitress were both amazing and the food was so delicious! We decided to return the following day and there were multiple places outdoors to sit but the day hostess was not so nice. She gave us a table half in the sun and then later did not even remember we had eaten there when we went to the bathroom. the day waitress was overworked and the food was okay. If you go ..do so at night is my recommendation

Restaurant week in Chestnut Hill Pa

By Charlene B |

Restaurant. Week in Chestnut Hill is August 13-18 2017. This quaint restaurant has a Hotel attached. Dinner was excellent with variety of menu items. Most tables are down stairs with no elevator. They do have outside seating available if you do not want to go down steps.

Best brisket sandwich ever!

By BobbiSt |

We stopped in for lunch & were welcomed by all of the staff! We were seated in the lower level, which we didn't know existed. Surrounded by stained/leaded glass we decided to share a sandwich, as we were going to be out in the hot sun & didn't want leftovers. We shared the Beef Brisket Sandwich; slow roasted beef brisket, horseradish cheddar cheese on a baguette with au jus 11.95. We had a choice of fries and fruit, hubby had the fries, I had the fresh fruit. Everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked great.

Great salad and atmosphere, but lackluster service, and average, lukewarm main

By Rachel K |

My best friend and I went here for dinner a week or so ago. We hadn't hung out in a while, and were eager to catch up. She had recommended the Grill, having been there before and liked it. I was attracted by a goat's cheese ravioli offering on the menu. Our ceasar salad appetizers were very good. However, I was less than impressed when as soon as our salad plates had been cleared away, the mains were *immediately* brought out. Our main courses had clearly been prepared earlier and been sitting under a heat lamp until we were ready. I was a waitress for 5 years, and appreciate freshly prepared, hot food, particularly easy items such as pasta and a fish sandwich! It's my opinion that there should not be a set, predetermined time for appetizers and for mains, particularly when it's not a full restaurant. The area in which we sat had some people, but there were multiple empty tables (ie. no one was waiting for our indoor, basement tables on a sunny, warm summer evening). My raviolis themselves were only warm, and were quite flavorless after a fantastic salad. It was not a 16.95 portion, either. I know how hard and long a dinner service can be, but the waitress' demeanor and her decision to call our mains away before we'd finished our salads only communicated that she wanted to go home. I think I'd go again if a friend chose it, but would be more likely to want to try elsewhere in Chestnut Hill.

Could've Been Better

By gblack7205 |

Had a business lunch there today. I'm an out of towner and my guest suggested it. The service could have been more attentive. We were there early and my sense is that the place filled up we fell behind. Atmosphere was okay but just okay. I had a soup and sandwich. The sandwich was good but not great. The chowder was not that tasty and not hot. Maybe it was just one of those days, but I probably not go back, except possibly to give it a second choice. But there are always other choices.

It was just ok

By 4Luvmy2 |

I went for lunch this week. The good: Location has free parking in rear. Unfortunately, I didn't know that but street parking was plentiful and inexpensive. They have outdoor seating. There's variety on the menu. Our server was timely and attentive. The ok: The food was just ok. I had a grilled fish taco. I'm a HUGE taco aficionado. The raw cabbage provided a nice crunch but little flavor. The fish as well wasn't really seasoned. The flavor came from the guacamole and the salsa toppings. It wasn't awful but it also wasn't something I would return for or recommend. Overall it was a decent meal, with acceptable service and a good price. I won't be rushing back and I expect there are other option in the area that are better.

Excellent

By esigall |

Great food and service in a nice atmosphere without any "attitude."

Nice surprize

By Charles H |

This location has been numerous restaurants over the years. The Grill has an interesting and varied menu. Food was very tasty and presented very nicely. Our waiter, Ty, was cordial, helpful and available. The prices for the quality of food and service was reasonable. We will be back!

Pleasing to a Diverse Group

By Twainsriver |

I took visiting family members from Florida. The group comprised drinkers, nondrinkers, carnivores, and health-conscious diners. All of us where pleased with our dinners. My favorite experience at this cafe, where I have eaten countless times, is sitting on the side patio and having a salad topped with grilled salmon. Seating on the front porch is okay, except for the heavy, loud traffic on Germantown Avenue. They do a beautiful job with plants and flowers against the backdrop of newly installed water features. In bad weather, you can choose the indoor bar, which has a few comfortable booths, or descend to the main dining room in the basement.

Pleasant Sunday Brunch

By Christopher S |

Pleasant outdoor atmosphere on a sunny day. Enjoyed the meal and drink.Good location also for people watching. The service was attentive but not intrusive.

Good, not great

By L0ve2travel0ften |

Our server accommodated us by serving us Cobb salads instead of the Cobb salad sandwich. It was good, but certainly not special in any way. The Manhatattan clam chowder was very good. Service was also good. Overall, nothing special but decent. The menu selections are fewer than previously offerrred.

Excellent and fun

Nice location to sit on the porch or outdoor side area. Food is good and service is good. It gets busy on nice days. Inside is good, but outdoor is preferred, weather permitting!

Hometown Favorite

By Cynnewton8 |

Attached to the quaint Chestnut Hill Hotel, this long time favorite is fantastic for salads and burgers. In the warmer months you can eat outside on the porch (taffic noise can be bad!). Mendichino Chicken Salad is our favorite. Huge, and with the locally baked bread, enough for two hungry people to share. All food is homemade on the premises except the bread.

Absolutely wonderful, especially in the summer.

Favorite Restaurant on the Hill

By nontrendytraveler |

This restaurant consistently serves delicious food at reasonable prices. You never have a long wait to get in or for your food. I think they have the best burgers and sandwiches in Chestnut Hill. Try the crabcake sandwich and the kobe beef burgers- you won't be disappointed!

Outstanding food and service for our party of 12

By Harvey_Travel |

We arranged a surprise birthday party for my mother at the Chestnut Grill. In terms of reserving one of the three attractive dining areas located downstairs, the staff could not have been more helpful, friendly and super easy to deal with. The event for a dozen family members was a total success. The staff was extremely attentive to all our requests throughout the meal. Service was always with a smile. Almost everyone ordered something different, so we had an excellent representation of the items on the lunch and brunch menus. Every dish was attractively presented, and we all enjoyed a delicious meal. We ended up spending 3 1/2 hours there. The dining area was fairly separate from the others, and we were never rushed to leave. The kitchen staff, the server and the manager created an unforgettable day for us. The Chestnut Grill scored a perfect 10 for the food, staff and venue.

Hurry up and wait!

By LoveFoodinPA |

It was a busy Sunday as there was a Home and Garden Festival along Germantown Avenue. So the restaurant was hopping but the hostess assured us that we could get in and out quickly and would not have to wait for our food for more than 20 minutes tops. She takes us down into the "catacombs" and it takes the waitress literally almost 20 minutes to come to our table. My husband had to go find a waitress who told our waitress that we were in a hurry as my husband had a booth in the festival and needed to get back. Our waitress finally came to our table and she assured us that we could get our brunch quickly. It took another 20 minutes to get our brunch. The salmon benedict was extremely skimpy on the salmon and my eggs were hard. On a side note, a four top was seated a full 5-10 minutes after us, but they received their food 10 minutes before us! So frustrating! Had a similar experience in that we had to wait a very long time before we got our dinner the night before at El Piquito down the street. What is up with Chestnut Hill?

Perfectly Pleasant!

By Sheila S |

Only steps away from historic Chestnut Hill's hustle and bustle, you'll feel tucked away in a Mediterranean grotto while dining down stairs (for the real ambiance) or watch the crowd go by from an outdoor table. Either way, you will love the food and excellent service. On a recent visit, my companion and I began by sharing an order of the Hummus Appetizer - a large scoop served with olives, grilled zucchini and naan flatbread (YUM!). She followed by enjoying every morsel of the Asian Organic Salmon while I devoured my Goat Cheese Ravioli. Too full for dessert, we'll just have to return for more!

Good, Consistent, and Reasonable

By Joseph W |

"The Grill" as it is called in neighboor commands a loyal following and for good reason. It has good food at a reasonable price supported by strong sevice and a freindly waitstaff. It is a good value and good expereince.

Fine setting. Great Waiter. Very Good Food.

By TommyBoy94 |

The Chestnut Grill is adjacent to the Chestnut Hill Hotel in the lively, upscale Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. With indoor and outdoor dining, the setting is in a splendid patio; a kind of grotto of fountains, chairs and outdoor art just a few doors away from the popular M Market. Aside from all the sights outside, the indoor spaces are charactarized by easy on the eyes mediterranean colors and rich woods. The bar is a deep oak-like structure reminiscent of elegant bars in old hotels. The waiter really kept excellent control of the table...well paced...never had to be asked twice...and extremely knowledgeable. This level of professional service is rare in a mid-priced restaurant. The food was very good. I had the cat fish sandwich on brioche, which was topped with a generous slaw containing kale. On my trips to New Orleans, I became a little spoiled with incredible cat fish, so while I enjoyed my sandwich here it didn't quite measure up to the best. I wasn't crazy about the slaw. My wife loved the chicken barley soup with a generous half-sandwich of home made chicken salad on a kind of raisin walnut toast. (And their were lots of choices of bread for the sandwich) To my taste, the chicken salad with its fine ingredients was perhaps a bit too refined. I confess I like the guilty pleasure of a mayonnaise-rich chicken salad, but that is my non-too-subtle preference and I think most people with fine palates would love the chicken salad as much as my wife. The fries which came with my sandwich were excellent and appeared to freshly made and not frozen. All in all, a very good experience and worth another trip.

I enjoyed my visits here

By AzulH |

I enjoyed my visits here, it was still possible to sit outside and if it was a little chilly they had overhead heaters. The salmon and Caesar was copious and the salmon cooked to perfection. The wine was a little pricey for what you got. The service was very friendly and prompt. (It is a separate business from the hotel above it)

Nice place. A hotel restaurant, however very comfortable.

I like what weddingwoman said below: "This place is very quaint and interesting- the bar and limited seating is available upstairs but the main dining area is in the 'basement' and somewhat claustrophobic....note! No cell phone signals available.... The cocktails were small and pricey and the wine list was limited- the waiter left much to be desired but the food was good and made up for it. " I found that to be my exact experience. WE went with a group of 6 adults, and were seated in a small room in the basement with like 7 other families/tables and no one could hear each other talk over the other conversations going on. There were other tables empty, so not sure why they crammed us in back there. The waitress was attentive, but had a personality of a rock. Of course, we were from out of town visiting family and friends and after dinner just wanted to talk and catch up. She then seemed irritated that we were done eating and wouldnt leave. This would have been a perfect opportunity for her to sell us on some more drinks.....instead she kept coming up MIA. Food was good, no one complained about anything. I had the ribeye steak, which was a lil overcooked for my taste, but it was seasoned well so I ate it anyways. Would go again likely, but these lil things kept me from giving it 4 stars!

Excellent weekday lunch

By Geoffrey B |

My wife and I have the good fortune to live near Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, PA and today thoroughly enjoyed lunch at the Chestnut Grill. We chose not to eat outside due to the heat, but there are ample tables outdoors in both the sun and shade if you choose to do so. We ate in what appeared to be a very recently modernized bar area. Service was quite speedy and the food was excellent. I enjoyed beef brisket on a delicious roll (baked by a local well known bakery) and my wife enjoyed tacos. The lunch portions are very large and I felt fortunate that I ordered the fruit instead of the french fries as a side order for my brisket. It also came with a small side of horse radish and gravy. I could barely finish the delicious meal. Definitely a place to which we would return.

Totally rehabbed and expanded porch dining

By dogs |

As part of the modernization they have just completed the renovation including a new roof over the expanded porch and patio areas which is great for people watching while enjoying a meal or drinks. They've added ceiling fans and heat lamps so i expect one can eat outside most of the year. The side and street side tables are intertwined with beautiful tall potted plants. All types of diners from young couples and groups of singles to elderly folks and parents with youngsters in tow. Food is very good but i'd recommend a stroll afterwards to have desert at nearby ice cream, frozen yogurt, or bakery spots to inhale the full charm of Chestnut Hill. Parking in lot around back.

Food was disappointing but service was good

By QuakerTruth |

I have dined at the Chestnut Hill Grill in the past but I was extremely disappointed with my last visit. My vegetarian chili was lukewarm, my basil mojito was incredibly watered down and the side salad was extremely skimpy. I will think twice about going back. The waitress was very cordial and efficient.

Amazing bistro in Chesrnut Hill

By Tom S |

Great restaurant in heart of Beautiful Chesnut Hill suburb of Philadelphia. Outside dining is great for people watching in fun area.

Excellent

By surfisher53 |

We shop in Chestnut hill a couple of times per month and on a Christmas shopping trip we decided to stop for lunch and we were not dissapointed, between the 3 of us we had the Roasted Pear and Goat Cheese salad, the lamb burger, clam chowder and the brisket sandwich, all were outstanding with super service and interesting decor.I have to comment on the clam chowder...i've been all over the Maine coast from Kittery to Acadia and this chowder was just as good as any that i had in any Maine restaurant.

Cozy Atmosphere, Friendly Staff, Good Food

By cplong |

It is hard to ask for more than a cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food. The Chestnut Grill has all three. My wife and I shared the crab cakes and portobello mushroom ravioli. Both were good. The cream sauce on ravioli was a bit watery, but as it cooled, it thickened and the flavor was good. The crab cakes were thick and had nice size pieces of lump crabmeat. It came with delicious grilled veggies. They have a nice little kids menu and children are welcome.

Great neighborhood find

I am so happy this is in our neighborhood. This place has great ambiance, great food, wonderful service and is overall wonderful.

Best Burgers!

By mhougen |

My husband and I have been going to the Chestnut Grille for many years, and have never had a bad meal. Our favorites are the burgers and desserts. Since we no longer live in the Chestnut HIll area, we look forward to the times we are back in the area, so we can eat there! What a treat!

Informal and Luscious

By Lynn H |

The Grill is a combination old-fashioned bar room and stylish outdoor cafe. It's a great place to sit and a charming place to be served. None of that would matter if it weren't for the relentlessly delicious food. None of the menu items are surprising. Fish tacos, coconut shrimp, burgers, chili and so on. You've seen them all a hundred times, but you've never tasted any thing like this: explosive flavors, exuberant freshness and great value. The wine list is good and the beer list is a better. Bar and table service are very friendly and it's hard not to leave there feeling like you've just been entertained by friends. But make no mistake, the lovely atmosphere is not the reason to go here: it's the absolutely perfect execution of standard bar food by a well-disciplined kitchen that makes this place an understated classic.

thursday night hangout

By claudia s |

my best friend and i eat here every thursday night. the wait staff is lovely, they know our drinks and have them ready for us. the food is fantastic and quite reasonable. we especially love their specials each week...most of all the bruschetta. the owners and management treat us like celebrities. love it here.

Great beer, wine, and food

By Daniel R |

I love this place. Great selection of beers (local and regional), as well as an amazing assortment of bar food.

Great food, OK service

By rfenster5 |

Like the title says, the food was very good and for the portion size, the prices were reasonable. The service was slightly less than desirable; my wife had to wait a LONG time for a drink, and it was disruptive to the cadence of the meal. I would try it again......everybody has an "off" day.

pet-friendly outside

By RutherfordB |

Thanks for providing outdoor seating so that we can have our dog with us at lunchtime. The food is really good!

An unexpected surprise

By Josh |

Hadn't eaten here in years but the husband and I stopped in on a Thursday on a whim. Reasonable prices for great food and our server Victoria C. Was an absolute joy, lovely, lovely girl. Living here ... we need to stop by more often!

Great Chicken Salad Sandwich

By Pearl E |

I have been going there for this sandwich for the last 10 years, and it remains the same. The atmosphere is light and refreshing. I love sitting outdoors with that neighbourhood feel.

Excellent food at a very reasonable price

By Johan C |

I was on a business trip to the hotel and stayed there for two nights, and ate all my meals at the restaurant. I tried different menu options for every meal and all of it was truly excellent, and came at a very reasonable price. The wait staff and bartenders are all extremely friendly, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Sunday Afternoon Lunch

By RubyPeach |

The weather was perfect to enjoy afternoon brunch with my friend on the patio. I love how the owners have expanded the grille over the years. I've had the pleasure of visiting several times over the last 20 years and I just love that I can still enjoy this jewel of an establishment!. the service was so so but the server was still new and very willing. The food was fresh and tasty.

Great food and atmosphere

By Yahme |

The place was packed for Saturday lunch, so we ate at the bar. Scrumptious bruschetta with pico de gallo and smoked salmon, Asian salad with crispy and spicy shrimp and noodles. Nice, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

Great bar (homemade potato chips are wonderful and complimentary) and Brunch

By Debbie S |

Nice warm cozy place for a cocktail or meal. Staff is welcoming and friendly. Their service was refreshing!

Creative

By eeeeeeeeeeemeee d |

We ate here because it is next to the hotel where we are staying. I almost order a hamburger, which looked good, but I didn’t. I had a cauliflower with grilled tuna salad and oh boy, it was inspired! There was a wonderful panoply of flavors that complimented each other without the salad becoming too complex. My wife had a chicken dish that was very good as well. Atmosphere is nice (seated outside) the service was good as well.

Could be better

By Mohannad L |

Fantastic sidewalk setup, you get to enjoy the weather. The food was not as good, although not bad. Wings smelled a little and were gamy. Service was OK.

Great selection

By Anna-Maria |

Great service and outside eating near the shops. Great place to sit and people watch. The staff was very friendly and the specialty beverages were unique and refreshing!

Don't miss the bloody piggy

By Tom M |

Bloody piggy - bloody Mary with bacon infused vodka and bacon garnish. The bacon was so good, we ordered a side of it! Nice bartender and good food. We had the croque madame - wonderful!

Shame on them

By Bob P |

Good evening with a customer and actually good food. There were maybe 8 people in the restaurant at that time. So the power went off. Our food was served in the dark. A few Dollar Store candles placed around. As a result we spent an hour in the dark fishing around searching for a shrimp. Ok - not their fault. My issue is the management didn't give a hoot if the overall experience was good or bad. Good luck finding the men's room. All I heard was complaints about PECO. I don't think that I've ever been in a restaurant that cared more about collecting the bill than caring about a customer. I found it comical that they ignored the entire situation. Business as usual who cares if these folks couldn't see the food. They should be ashamed

Pub like coziness, great food, stellar location

By Brad F |

Staying at the Chestnut Hill hotel, I was surprised to learn one of the top rated area restaurants was in the same structure. Rare indeed. Dark wooden coffered ceilings and a magnificent ornate bar that looked to Victorian era custom carpentry. Two TV's for those of us that need video stimulation - although I'm not sure the golf channel without sound classifies as stimulating. Menu featured good cross section of fish, poultry and beef as well as a special of rare tuna on salad - which looked good. I decided on the grilled salmon over salad. Done to perfection - not too dry, not underdone. Not too salty or overspiced - not too bland. Greens and dressing superb. Decent selection of beers on draft and bottle, although not a huge local craft offering. Many wines by bottle or glass. Wait staff friendly and attentive without being bothersome.

Great meals and great setting on the deck

By Stevokid |

We managed to get a table for 4 adults and 5 kids on Easter Sunday for lunch while walking in Chestnut Hill. The first positives was their great attitude and willingness to seat our large group by combining tables and bringing the kids meals out first - as well as crayons and puzzle sheets! The food was very good and very reasonably priced and we had calamari, huevos rancheros, tuna salad, burgers and beef salad. All of the meals were very good. The kids menu included shrimps and chips and macaroni cheese and at $7 with a beverage this is good value. The service was good and it was enjoyable to sit outside on the deck watching the world go by.

Good Food, good service.

By sjs4711 |

We had to find a place that could accommodate and feed 10. The diners were of an age range that spans 3 generations. Chestnut Grill did a great job. The food was fresh and tasty, and our waitress, Amy was an excellent food server and a living doll. It seemed like everyone enjoyed his or her meal, and all were pleased. I had the Chicken Marsala which was delicious. I was able to pilfer a mushroom ravioli from my friend and that was great. The price was reasonable and the ambiance was interesting and pleasing. I am not generally in this area much, but if my compass ever leads me back, I will eat at Chestnut Grill

So yummy!

By HappyMommy41 |

We just had the house-made hummus and the spinach and chicken salad but it was all so good we wished we could go back for more. We did take out up to our room in the Chestnut Hill Hotel - which was perfect. I went down and ordered directly from the bar and carried the food upstairs.

Restaurant week

By pbaccash26 |

We had dinner for four eight main courses and 4 desserts. They were wonderful so we had plenty of food to take home for the next day. The atmosphere was lovely. The service was excellent. The drinks were wonderful.

Will come back

By Harveyjag |

Wonderful restaurant, diverse menu, attentive wait staff, nice decor, quiet inside, ample free parking

TASTY!

By Katie M |

The food was amazing and the service was great. The weather was so nice, so we enjoyed sitting in the outside area to eat. Will be back in Jan 2015

Locals avoid

By PeterTosh721 |

Beautiful hotel, ideal spot for outdoor dining and people watching, ok service, but the food has never held up. I've gone about 1x/year over the past 10 and have been disappointed 8/10 times. Many great choices up and down 'the Hill', so stick to booze and outdoor hang if you must visit, otherwise look elsewhere.

Nice little place to have dinner

By joisagypsy |

We had dinner here one night and it was quite good. We all enjoyed our meals and couldn't eat it all. The service was very good as well.

Great Dining Experience

By DOETUC |

We dined on the porch had a wonderful experience. We started with the mussels in a garlic clam pesto - delicious. I had the chicken & corn salad which was tasty with a fresh corn and black bean chutney. My partner had the roasted salmon eqully as good. Service was friendly and made good recomendations

Exciting sandwich menu

By 551melm |

Four of us had a late lunch on Wednesday. There were several exciting choices for sandwiches--lamb burgers, brisket, crab cakes, and the usual. They came with a choice of fries or fresh mixed fruit. Three of us ordered the lamb (excellent) and two opted for the fruit (which were truly fresh and delicious). We will all definitely go there again when in the neighborhood.

Very good food, good service

By Emar55 |

We had a tasty lunch here, spicy crab soup and fish tacos. Moderately priced. We enjoyed the atmosphere and decor both upstairs and down. They were so accomodating at night for the large group we were and arranged for us easily.

Chilled, Layed Back Spot

By Crystal H |

I eat at this restaurant at least once a week. Petite lamb chops, a tossed salad with grilled shrimp and a glass of Pino. Yesterday I stumbled across their happy hour menu. Corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut egg rolls (literally to die for) and a slice of the owners homemade carrot cake (has to be the best damn piece of cake ever) and a glass of Pino. Staff are very friendly and professional. Small crowd of friendly regulars, great conversations sitting at the bar. If ever you are in the neighborhood, stop in. I guarantee you’ll want to become a regular...

The Lamb Is A Must Have

By PhillyShaney |

I have enjoyed the Chestnut Grill for years! I enjoy the laid back atmosphere..attentiveness of staff and the food is consistently delicious! The food was prepared well and flavorful! The portions are great and it is always fun to share because the menu has so many great items and you always want more and more! The Chestnut Hill Grill is a neighborhood gem!

Great Food and service

By jessica g |

we stayed at the hotel next for a wedding party and we stopped by the grill for a bite to eat before the ceremony and I must say they have a great selection of food and they offer great service. Try the the pear and brie cheese.

Fantastic hotel and grill

By gogreen1 |

Spent a recent Saturday evening here, was a pleasant sunny afternoon and we had the opportunity to sit out on the porch to enjoy drinks and appetizers. Our server was very nice and efficient. Upon check in the girl was very pleasant and took us to our room which was in the annex, Although rooms were a bit pricy $250 for a double queen, they were nice and clean with a European flair to it, We finished the evening inside the grill room which was very cozy and service was great as well. I would return to visit again and hope to get a better nightly rate.

Good food, excellent service

By Karin K |

My son and I ate here today for lunch. This was during a very busy street festival, and the restaurant was very busy. However, the food was very good. (And the pancakes were huge!) Also, our server, who, according to my receipt was Kian, was the perfect combination of attentive and "let the customers eat in peace". I'm not in this area often, but next time I find myself in this neck of the woods, I am definitely stopping in here again!

Feel of Europe

By RicotheGreat |

Great menu, reasonably priced and good service. I really liked the European feel dining on the veranda.

Served reheated food

By blooming_hydrangeas1 |

Have been coming here for years Always good Not this time Coconut shrimp were reheated Could tell by the way they looked and tasted So were wings Didn't bother to stay for dessert Won't be back Wrote feedback on card when paid bill No response A shame

Consistently a great meal!

By Ann H |

I went to Chestnut Hill Grill at the Chestnut Hill Hotel several times in December. I have been there for lunch with a group - a romantic dinner and solo - it never disappoints! Among the short list of recommendations - crab cakes, must be 100% crab - the steaks are always to perfection - and NEVER pass on the specials!

Lots of choices in the area, we made an excellent choice

By chasinUpstateNewYork |

We looked at all the options in the area, and there are many, but wanted more than bar food or really casual fare. Looking at the menu at the Grill, we were sold. The venue is on two levels, we were taken to the basement and seated in a "back" room which was perfect as it was more quiet than the bar or the first rooms. Our server was attentive with menus and patient while we made our choices. We chose the PEI Mussels as a starter, and they were perfect. Plump tender and tasty, served with a very garlicky broth and a slice of toasted baguette. It is a test of a good relationship when we did not fight for control of the bowl. She chose a breaded chicken breast over polenta; I picked risotto with shrimp. I think her chicken was the better choice, savory and tender, but the risotto was good (but not as good as mine; I learned it in Rome ~25 years ago and to my taste it is perfection), the shrimp were a good sized and cooked just right, served on top of the risotto. Wine was a bottle of a NZ white, a crisp addition to our menu choices. Dessert was an Italian Lemon Cake (shared) and an Eggnog (not shared). Our server was excellent.

Had a chance to stop in for lunch while staying at the Hotel. This was a very nice place, the service was great and the food was very nicely prepared and tasted great.

Philly 60th Reunion

By Alan_Forrester1170 |

Very nice decor. The majority of the dining is held in small rooms in the basement. Bathroom on main floor so if handycapped, like I am, using the restroom before going downstairs. The food and service was very good, with exception of the Maitre D (middle aged lady). She acted like she didn't care - when we left she didn't even bother to ask if we enjoyed ourselves.

great location, great drinks with good food

By RB Karl |

A neighborhood standby. We often enjoy the chicken parmesan, shrimp pasta, lamb burger and brisket sandwich. While not "high-end trendy" food, the menu items are good and well-prepared. One of the best and most consistent restaurants in Chestnut Hill.

delightful evening meal at hotel

By Bknowing |

Service was courteous. Atmosphere in the bar area was energetic and enjoyable. Food was delicious with most of the usual favorites on the menu. Good presentation. Convenient because we were overnighting in the hotel.

Good food but very noisy

By Maddami |

Five of us had dinner there on a Saturday night. I had the lamb chops appetiser which was excellent. I had a side of mash potatoes which were rich and buttery. The rest of my party's food was also good and the service was efficient. The only downside is that it was extremely noisy and it was difficult to hear what we were saying.

The best salad I've ever had...

By Nicole S |

Chestnut Grill is a delightful little stop - particularly when you can sit outside on a nice day. I got the Lemon Chicken Flatbread Spinach Salad. It was THE best salad I've ever eaten. There was also no skimping on the portion size. I was very pleasantly surprised! Everything was done to perfection.
