Excellent always consistent!

By vaskfam5 |

Tuesday arrived at 355pm. Walked right in. They opened @4. Kenneth was our server, again excellent, friendly, efficient. We ordered a small salad which was perfect for all 3 of us. Absolutely delicious ,2 freshly made dressings brought to the table.Sweet and sour poppyseed +garlic. Mediterranean bread is a must. Experience the flavors popping in your mouth. We all ordered the 1/2 lb pot pie. Again ,consistent and delicious. I usually do not care for ground sausage, but absolutely delicious. Before covid they never took reservations, now they do. We parked on the street down the block and paid meter $7.50. We have used valet before with no problem. If u get there early visit Lincoln park zoo, around the corner.

Limited Menu but Fun Place

By Craig M |

They only take cash but there is a ATM machine inside. The pizza is more like a big pot pie so if you're looking for traditional 'za, this might not be your place. I thought the food was good and it's worth a try if you are looking for something a little bit different and local.

Worth the wait

By deb52017 |

We waited 2 hours but it was well worth it! I would go back in a second if I didnt live 4 hours away! What I thought a chicago pizza should be!Great staff!

Good dinner But CASH ONLY

By Big Al |

As my title says our dinner was good, but this restaurant is CASH ONLY. The only reason for my review not being 5 stars was the CASH ONLY surprise. No where on the Trip Advisor listing (that I can see), and more importantly on the restaurant’s web front page does it show that the restaurant is CASH ONLY. When you check in the only clue is a small ATM machine in the entrance of the restaurant. No sign, no mention by the hostess. OK, cash only signage rant done. We had the Mediterranean bread and a half pound pizza pot pie as dinner for the two of us. Both were very good and more then enough with leftovers. I would come back for dinner/lunch. Street parking can be tough. There is valet parking @ $14-CASH.

Bland Dog Food and Rude Staff

By Owen S |

For my first time here I was extremely disappointed. This was my second time in Chicago and my mom wanted to treat me out. She had bragged about this place so much and to get there and be treated the way we did was god awful. I was told an hour and a half wait with a reservation and it was 10 minutes before it was our turn and was told to wait an additional 30 minutes! While we were waiting in the foyer there was a dog in the window and the dog was walking around the table and eating off the plates and the utensils. The waitress had pet the dog and continued to serve other tables without washing her hands. When it was our turn the waitress had tried to give us the table. After my mom had told the waitress that there was a dog on the table and that she was allergic, the waitress stared at her like she was dumb and offered nothing else. That dog was not a service dog and you can tell. Little Chihuahua size dog with no leash or anything. And when they left the dog was barking at everyone and everyone. Table was not clearly cleaned off up to code. This was unacceptable. After we explained our concern she told us there was nothing to do and ended up giving another table. Food was extremely bland and had a god awful waitress, pushing our glasses and messed up our order twice. And when we were trying to explain what was missing from the table she gave us an attitude about having to go back and correct the order. I was told the sauce was cooked for 9 hours and it tasted like it was from a can you can buy at Walmart. Will most likely never go back unless something changes from the place. 1/10 only because I was starved.

Great history and delicious with exceptional service

By susan |

Our niece lives in Chicago and recommended we all go to Chicago Pizza and OVen when we had a family reunion in the city. This was one of my favorite nights as it started with an exceptional hostess. When we arrive early, she showed us two tables and said our group of 8 would be their largest table so she wanted to see which table we would prefer. The table we selected was tucked away and made for such an intimate evening with our family but the service and presentation was just as enjoyable with the bread that is to die for and the pizza that is an experience to just watch them serve it. We loved the history of the location with the St. Valentine M taking place across the street. The story on their website said the restaurant location was a look out for Al Capone. All this aside- the food was fantastic- terrific house Chianti and I would go back just for the bread alone.

Good food but unorganized

By Tammy W |

I really enjoy the food here but may not return. I was told by the host who did not take any names that it would be 40-50 minute wait. After an hour, I asked the bartender if he ever forgets people. He said, "all the time. You may want to check in with him". When I checked back in with him, he said how many in your party? It was as if he thought I just got to the restaurant. We waited another 20 minutes before we got seated. Once seated, the staff is friendly and the food is good. As a cash paying customer, I don't like to be ignored or treated as if I am bothering them by showing up at there restaurant. Get with the times, make a list.

Don’t eat breakfast or lunch

By Chris V |

Have the pot pie, have the Mediterranean bread. Thank me later. You will still be stuffed the next morning. Cash only ... amazing joint, totally worth the wait.

Outstanding!

By Amy K |

This place was outstanding! We each got the 1/2 pound pot pie—it had all of the good stuff wrapped up into one dish—sauce, cheese, meat, veggies, and bread! What more could you ask for?! It paired well with a bottle of Chianti. We also split the 3 scoop tortoni for dessert—delicious! The service was excellent too!

Everything this MT girl expected. Worth the wait!

Adorable little hole in the wall. Hard to get into, but definitely worth your wait. Best to try and make reservations. Waitress was super sweet.

Unique Chicago Restaurant

By LindaJoan57 |

I used to live in Chicago in the late 80's and much has changed since then....but not Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. Still unique and great tasting pizza! Same furnishings, but that just contributes to keeping its charm. A definite must-do on any turist (or locals list) of places to eat in Chicago.

Too long of a wait

By J S |

Listen...I know this is a hot spot and they have the corner on the market for upside down pizza. But seriously.....there is WAY MORE FLAVORFUL pizza in this city!! The first time I tried to go, we got there 10 minutes after opening. It was already a four hour wait. You have to be kidding me!! We went to Siena Tavern and had WAY BETTER PIZZA with NO WAIT!! The second time we were told a two hour wait.....which meant we would be seated at 10. At 1030 I asked if we could eat in the bar. Was told no. Finally at 1045 we were seated. We had plenty of time to know what we wanted. We ordered right away. A salad came out 40 minutes later and pizza 40 minutes after that. We told them NOT to hold the pizza order for the salad. We never were asked for refills on cocktails.....lord knows I needed one. I went to the bar & got it myself. Then the pizza.......season-less mushrooms and meat sauce. Did you run out of seasonings? I NEVER remember it being this bland. I have been here before but this was horrible. I wont be back. No place it worth waiting 3-4 hours and this place certainly is not. Again the pizza at Siena tavern we got the first night was 1000x better than this. Oh....and no credit cards....cash only. Feel free to use their ATM so they can charge you another $3.50 to get your money for uninspired and tasteless food. Oh....and to boot, got a $60 City Of Chicago Ticket in the mail.....valet parked. Thanks for that too!! Are the Valet guys on the take with the City? Would not surprise me!!

Best to have a lot of time to wait...

By Toby B |

...in line. This place has been a local favorite formerly 30 years only recently making headlines on a national stage(I saw a video on Facebook). I wandered up and was sad to discover I was around two hours early, so I took the opportunity to wander over to a favorite watering hole for a beer. When I had wasted those two hours I wandered back to be totally flabbergasted at the line that came out of the door and went half a block down the sidewalk. I was discouraged and walked away. Several weeks later I wandered in at about 1130P and was able to squeeze onto a bar seat and had a wonderful conversation with the barman, he tells me Thursdays are a better day to go, wait wise... I couldn't say how the pizza is because I had a salad to go. My goodness, you need an appetite for that behemoth. Also, they have discovered a way to get around credit card charges, they have an ATM in the entrance and are a cash only business. Inconvenient, if you are not prepared for it, which really is the only reason I gave the place 4 out of 5. If you are wanting a unique North Side Chicago experience that isn't one of the "chain" pizza places, this is absolutely the place to go!

Loved this pizza pot pie

By tink8009 |

This was my first taste of real Chicago deep-dish pizza and it was delicious. I know it's more like a pizza pot pie but it's great! We took it to Lincoln Park for a picnic and it traveled well too.

Is this place worth the wait?

By Lamont M |

HELL YES!!! The pizza is GOOD AF!!! They have perfected the most important ingredient of a pizza which is the sauce. We waited for over an hour and I’d do it again.

Pizza from Heaven!!

By Shaikh H |

This is HONESTLY THE BEST PIZZA I have ever had in life!! Literally it sent me skyrocketing to the best parts of heaven! Though there is one criticism I do have, is that when we got there, we then realized we can only use cash. I wish the business would let customers know in advance that this is a cash only place. Please put it as a huge banner on your website's homepage please. I do want to end this review on a positive note, is that the restaurant does have an ATM machine where you can draw cash.

I think they are lying

By S L |

I have been coming here for 20 years. I made a reservation on July 7, 2024 for my family to drive over an hour to have lunch and visit the zoo. It was booked through open table over a week prior. The evening before at 9:45 pm I got an email that stated my reservation was cancelled by the restaurant. I called that evening and left several messages as well as in the morning. I finally got through at 11:15am after they opened and explained what had occurred. They put me on hold for a few minutes and then came back to tell me that the AC had gone out and the dining room was closed for the day, but they are still doing take out orders. If this were the case, wouldn't she have told me as soon as she picked up the phone and I explained my issue? Extremely dissappointed about this encounter. It would have been a courtesy to call or email all the cancelled reservations if they truly had an issue with the AC but I suspect there will be plenty of people on instagram today posting pictures dining in there today!

Still great 30 years later

My first visit here was when I was in college. I loved it then. This trip was with my family and they loved it. The salad was excellent. Highly recommend, well worth the wait.

Vastly Over-Rated!

By RealHungryMann |

On a recent long weekend in Chicago we decided to have Saturday lunch at the Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder. We had heard about their "upside-down pizza", and since the reviews seemed to be so favorable, we thought that we just had to give it a try. When we arrived around 1 PM we noticed that there were lots of people outside milling about on the sidewalk--not a good sign for a quick lunch. We wrestled our way inside past the throngs of people and put out name in with the maître d' who informed us that it would be a one-and-a-half hour wait! We decided to pass the time by walking to the Lincoln Park Zoo, which was only a few blocks from the restaurant. We perused the zoo for over an hour before returning to the Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder restaurant. We checked in with the maître d' and were told that there were still "20 parties" ahead of us! We weaseled our way to the bar and ordered some drinks while we waited for our table to become available. We waited and waited and chatted with the other patrons, and waited some more. I was on my 3rd tall glass of beer on an empty stomach before we were finally called to our table, some two-and-a-half hours after our arrival! We ordered some CHEF’S SALADs and the MEDITERRANEAN BREAD, which was recommended to us by another patron. The choice for pizza was extremely limited--vegetarian or meat sauce. We waited a long time for the pizza to arrive. Meanwhile, the salads were kind-of limp and unexciting. The Mediterranean Bread was essentially glorified pizza dough which was heavily laden with Italian spices--tasty but nothing special. And when the actual pizza finally arrived it was somewhat disappointing. To make their pizza, all of the ingredients are put into a cereal bowl and the dough is placed on top of that, around the bowl, then baked. When the pizza comes out to your table it is turned upside down and the bowl is removed, revealing the cheese and other ingredients. However, I could only find one whole mushroom amidst the sauce and cheese, and not much else. After all the hype, we were quite disappointed with our experience at the Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder restaurant. The large crowds of people, the extremely long wait, and the limited pizza choices were a real turn off. And on top of all of that they do not accept credit cards! There are definitely much better pizza restaurants in Chicago. The "upside-down" cereal bowl just seemed like a gimmick, and we will probably not be going back any time soon...

Pizza Pot Pie, all its cracked up to be

By rschmitt73 |

Old world charm for this Chicago icon. Great food, with wonderful service. Had to wait a few minutes at the bar before we could get a table, but not long. Bartender was friendly, but prices were a little steep. $24 for 1 bottled beer and 1 glass of house Chianti. High backed, wood carved booths were comfortable for the 3 of us full-sized humans. We decided to order a couple of entree items and share. We ordered an antipasto salad, offered with meats and cheeses only or with a bed of lettuce ($31.50). A meatball grinder sub ($20.50), and one of their large pizza pot pies ($38 for the one-pounder). Our server did a fantastic job explaining all to us. He also kept our small dressing bowls filled with their delicious house-made dressings, ensuring we had more than enough for the entire meal. We ended up with plenty of leftovers and couldn't have been happier with the whole experience.

Decent food, ridiculous wait

By Randy L |

The seating system here leaves a lot to be desired. We put in our name and were told about 3 hours. They have no call back or notification system at all. We came back and wrestled (that's almost a literal statement) our way to the person we gave our name to and were told they were probably 30 minutes longer than they quoted. We ended up waiting on-site at least 45 minutes. After watching the chaos of their seating, we finally decided to ask for an update only to be told they had already called our name. No, they did not. We were standing right in the little foyer for over 45 minutes. Their system is chaos. Two guys with hand written names on pads of paper. We witnessed 4 other groups have the same experience as us - they claim they called their names but they were standing there like us and never were called (they did come out onto the street to call some names - walking right past us - but never called our name). Once seated, things got a bit better. Our server was great - prompt, friendly, efficient. The bread was fantastic. Salad was ok. We ordered the pot pie pizzas and they came out in a reasonable amount of time. They were good. I wouldn't call them great. They actually tasted more like lasagna than pizza. Overall, an "ok" experience after a ridiculous wait and not getting called at all (thank goodness we asked for an update). Getting a table is very poorly run, so if you want to go here, put your name in and plan to go someplace else and not wait there. Come back near the time they said, be prepared to wait, and keep asking for a status as they are likely to miss you completely based on our experience. Pricing was reasonsable. Be warned, it's cash only. Definitely over hyped, but a fun and different style of pizza if you can get in without the wait.

Not quite as good as I remembered

By Jason S |

Not quite as good as I remembered but still almost enjoyed this more than Classic Chicago deep-dish pizza. A small little place that is super busy and a cool atmosphere.

Wonderful

By RGors |

This place is so unbelievable! We will be back, The food is delicious and there is nothing like it in this world to compare it too. You have to get the bread and salad plus pizza

Now THIS is pizza

By Wendy L |

I will never look at pizza the same way ever again. Expect a wait.... but do not expect anything but the most delicious pizza experience of your life. Everyone was super friendly and the food was outstanding!

I have tried to visit this

By benfwarren |

I have tried to visit this restaurant three separate times. Every time I come, there is a long wait. The first time they quoted me 1.5 hours, and the two times after I was quoted over 2 hours. It is very frustrating because they do not accept reservation ahead of time. I still have not eaten at this restaurant and have decided I no longer want to.

Nice pizza but possibly over-hyped

By NickySG |

We got there at 4pm on a Monday when it opened and had no difficulty getting in straightaway, though it was pretty busy when we left so I can imagine you'd have to queue a long time at busy times. The pizza was nice enough but we'd heard so much about it, we were slightly underwhelmed.

Pizza pot pie!!!

By Charles C |

A couple of friends recommended this place, and it didn't disappoint. The unique pizza pot pies were tasty. We also had a salad before the pies came and it was quite good. Dressings were homemade. ... A couple of drawbacks: The inside is very cramped and it is a cash-only restaurant. At least it was when we were there. There is an ATM in the lobby, but it would have been nice to know beforehand.

It's incredibly rich

By Paulito N |

Very very rich, period. Better than any deep dish pizza joint in town. It is a place with a very rich pizza and excellent quality ingredients

Fantasy pizza pot pie

By Brian I |

Great pizza, come with cash and be prepared to wait. It’s with it. Get the meat pizza and Mediterranean bread.

It’s a pizza pot pie

By CarrieShaw |

This pot pie is different from Chicago deep dish pizza. It’s worth the wait. The service was great and so is the food!

Ignore the Negative Trolls: This is a Great Place

By Bishop213 |

Ok: look we were 1st told about this place and the fact we had to go on a weekday because of how crowded it gets. I WAS NOT HAPPY!!! Add to the fact my job is a 5minute drive from that place. I went all the way home hour away in rush hour- just to turn around and come right back and find out its down the street from my job. Needless to say I was pissed and my thoughts on the place at the moment couldnt be said around children! BUT OHHH BOIII once we got there we were told an hour and 15 min wait so we sat at the bar had drinks it was crowded as the devil. It took maybe 15 min before we were seated and I tell you the Pizza Pot Pie was to die for..i no longer cared about the drive home or back down or the 15min wait. When they pour a drink they pour a really good drink at reasonable prices! I'm a meat man but I settled for the marinara meat sauce ( I added pepperoni tho and it was the best thing ever) the servers were great and friendly they even provide a gelato with candles due to celebrating a birthday and the food was unbelievable ..trust me i'm a really hard critic see my other reviews.. this place is great and worth the wait at least it was worth my 20 to 25 min which included drinks at the bar

Friendly staff nice atmosphere

By Leticia |

Friendly staff nice atmosphere small area give yourself time and bring cash no credit cards. Food was great and took home leftovers didn’t

On our list to visit.

By Eileen R |

This was on the list of places to eat on a recent family get together in Chicago. We tried the pot pie pizza, the grinder, the salad and the bread. The service was excellent. Alex was our server and she did a fantastic time. The pot pie pizza was good. Very different. We are pizza aficionados and have never had a pizza pot pie before. The grinder was very disappointing. Lots of ingredients but no flavor. The bread and salad were amazing. Again, the bread was very different but very good.

Had to try it

By Amjad K |

I heard so much about this place that i wanted to try it,. I took my sons, the four of us waited over an hour outside, when we finally got a table. first thing we tried was the Mediterranean bread which was delicious, then we ordered 1/2 pound of pizza each. a couple of disappointing things, were the drinks, you can't get a refill for free on soft drinks, AND its cash only..our bill was $91 There is an ATM but i'm sure they are fees

Another GREAT experience!!!

By Speros B |

CPOG is one of our favorite restaurants, as well as one of the most consistent hospitality experiences in “the Windy City.” There is no pizza like it. The sausage oven grinder sandwich is one of a kind. But the best part of this “cash only” restaurant is the impeccable service. The wait staff is professional, courteous, attentive and friendly. Always worth the (what has become a long) wait. Get the mulled wine hot drink! Mmmmmmmm! CPOG,along with The Greek Islands, are the 2 best experiences you will find!

aaahh.. NO!

By browneyednenita |

We visited this place as a friend recommended it to us. We arrived on a Friday afternoon for lunch only to realize they didnt open until 4, so we came back Sunday for dinner. We were told 1.5 hr wait.. ok, that fine, It turned into a 3hr wait. Once there we were told cash only and although there is an ATM at the entrance, its a bit inconvenient as we dont like to travel with large amounts of cash and now had to take out a large amount and pay the ridiculous ATM fees. Once seated we realized how limited the menu was, 4 items Salad, pizza pot pies, sandwiches & a flat bread. I ordered a sausage & pepper sandwich (grinder), the sausage was dry & the only flavor was the massive amounts of pepper, no salt or any other seasoning, completely flavorless. We had an 8yr old who basically was only able to eat salad & the flat bread because this is not children friendly food. If you like large meals, this is the place for you, unfortunately, it wasnt for us. The waiter hardly came to our table to check on us, the only staff member who was attentive was the host who had the unfortunate task of constantly telling us 30 minutes a few times while we waited for our table. I was disappointed as we were told this was the place to go when in Chicago, unfortunately I must say we had other locations where the food was better in quality & taste with less of a wait time. The only thing we liked was the flat bread!

This place was amazing!!!

By Scott K |

WoW! Is about all we can say. We were in town visiting family. They decided to make reservations a month in advice and glad they did. When we arrived, those without reservations were told they'd have to wait about 90-minutes. Because we had reservations, we only waited about 25 minutes. Service was very good. Our waitress attentive and polite. The restaurant is not overly big, so likely one of the reasons for the wait. The other reason, would be the food. The Mediterranean bread, the salad, the dressings and the pizzas were all awesome! We were ALL so full! If you have an opportunity to eat here, don't pass it up! The only slight inconvenience is they are cash only.

CPOG = OMG!!

By MaryannDA |

You will think you have died and gone to pizza heaven. Three words ... Pizza Pot Pie. That is all I am saying. End of Story. Be there and be round. It is so worth it. Drink celery juice tomorrow.

Don’t order the salad.

By OrExplorer1 |

When we arrived at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder we were seated and the manager, Kathy, came by and gave us the rundown of the menu and made some suggestions. She was very nice and checked on us a few times. Cocktails were good and our server, Caroline, suggested a bottle of wine which was spot on. We ordered Mediterranean bread which was very good. We got the “small” Italian Festa salad. This salad is huge. Could easily serve 5 people. They bring out two small containers of salad dressing (clearly not enough for the whole salad). We also ordered one meat Pizza Pot Pie. We were going to order dessert but this is when things went sideways. When boxing up our salad we asked to have the dressing on the table put in a small container. The guy boxing it said they don’t do that. The manager then came by and said they could fill the table containers back up and we could pour it into the salad to-go box. We didn’t want that making things soggy. Kathy said they could sell us a small container for $3 or a bottle for $12. We aren’t checking luggage so that would be a waste. So the containers on the table were filled (which would be wasted if we didn’t take it). My wife is hard of hearing and tried to clarify with the manager and she was very rude and walked away mid sentence. So we bought a $3 small container of dressing poured the rest on the side of our salad which was watery by the time we got back and ruined the salad for the next day. We decided to skip the $11 dessert as the whole salad dressing thing was just out of line. The small plastic container would cost cents to not waste the dressing on the table. They clearly make sure you don’t get enough so you have to buy more for the salad if you have left-overs. So we spent $3 on dressing instead of $11 on dessert. One of the guys who box things up said it is frustrating as guests leave upset all the time. I will say our service from Caroline was outstanding. I suggest skipping the salad. 5 stars went to 3 after the way the manager acted and the container.

Needs to use fresh ingredients

By Naeem K |

The place is nice but it’s sad that the don’t use fresh ingredients the really need to use fresh ingredients and make efforts to serve quality food

Would come back to Chicago for this food!!!

By Georgia N |

This place is a MUST! Arrive when the place opens or you’ll be waiting a while although it’s 100% worth waiting for. The food is amazing here, even the salad was incredible the dressings are great! But the pizza pot pie is the best variation of pizza 😍 also the service is fast, staff are friendly and it’s got a nice setting. If you’re in Chicago you can’t go past this place!

Different take on pizza

By Twinsmom99 |

We’ve heard a lot about this place and finally got to try it. My hubby loved the pizza - I thought it was undercooked. Also, this is a cash only business. Thank goodness my husband had cash because we normally don’t carry cash.

Outstanding

By John F |

This place still has the magic! About half of our party had never been (we had 7) and they looked at us a bit sideways when we said “no problem” to the the 2 hour wait but once they started eating they got it. We started with Mediterranean Bread and salad both of which were incredible. The spices on the warm bread and the homemade salad dressing were terrific (my sister-in-law purchased 2 bottles of the seasoning for home use). Most of our party had the pot pie pizza for dinner and it was great as always; my son had a meatball grinder and it was as large as a football and packed with flavor. All of our food was fantastic and our service was incredible. At the end of dinner my wife looked at me and asked why she was just finding out about this place after almost 20 years together; she now understands why the 2 hour wait was no problem. We are already looking forward to our next trip back to CPOG. I can’t recommend this place highly enough! This is a definite must try experience in Chicago.

DELICIOUS!! 😍

By Fonda W |

OMG! Pizza Pot Pie, it’s to die for!! Everything is right with the pizza world, it’s the BEST THING EVER!! They call it pizza but it’s more like “tasty meat sauce topped with cheese in a pot pie”& don’t forget about the soft, fresh bread it’s backed in..... oh don’t forget the huge mushrooms that are inside, yummmy. This was amazing! As with most DELICIOUS restaurants in Chicago be prepared to wait for a table. This place is super tiny inside but it has an old charm to it. When I’m back in Chicago, you better believe I’ll be back here.

Pizza Pot Pie is a must

By Morgan Fitzke |

I would give anything to have a pizza pot pie right now. The Greek salad was delicious, the Mediterranean bread is another must, and then of course the famous pizza pot pie. My one mistake was sharing a pizza pot pie, definitely should've gotten my own. SO GOOD. The restaurant is on the smaller side but has a cute and home-y feel. Loved it so much.

Giant pizza worth the wait, once

By Debbie N |

Waited 4 hrs to get in, another hour to finally get our pizza. Crazy, it was Christmas week so everything was crowded. If our adult son who lived in Chago and swore it was worth the wait and with us we would’ve given up. Pizza was massive, stuffed with meat and ingredient, impossible to finish, even as famished as we were. A once in a lifetime experience for me, but one of those Chicago things not to miss

Excellent food but...

By Beverly B |

The restaurant was recommended to us so the 11 of us, in town for a family wedding, decided to try it. The restaurant is small, very narrow aisles, and crowded. They do not take reservations and will not seat a party until all members are present. They serve real Chicago deep dish pizza and it’s terrific. I’ve never eaten anything like it before- cheese stuffed crust and an excellent sauce with all the onions, peppers, etc. puréed in it. But... you can only get sausage or mushroom or sausage and mushroom. There’s a personal size (1/2 pounder, $14.95) which was more than plenty for the females in the group. There’s a pounder available as well. Some in the group ordered a Mediterranean flatbread appetizer with dipping oil. It was huge-about the size of a turkey platter. Folks said it was quite tasty. They asked for marinara to dip it in and were denied. 🤔 Others also ordered a salad. It was beautifully presented and accompanied by 2 or 3 dressings on the side. It was enough for 4-6 people. There’s a full bar and, of course, sodas (single serve). Grinders and a few other items were on the menu, too. I thought the food was a bit pricey but drinks were in line with what I’m used to. This is a cash only establishment.

Let’s get a little deep with your deep dish

By Paul DuBois |

Located across the street from the site of the St. Valentines Day massacre (now a vacant lot), this small restaurant has been using the same recipe since the 1970s. The walls are still in original condition, full of wood cladding that would not be permitted today. Staff are locals and long-time employees who love their deep dish as well as their local history. Portions are large and can easily accommodate sharing. Limited menu but that’s the reason for the visit. It’s a genuine deep dish experience where you can dig into a bowl of cheese, sauce and crust. At the same time digging into a little bit of Chicago history, gossip and local insight. No reservations so show up and either sit at their small bar or go to a local place (we liked RJ Grunts) to prepare for your belt loosening ‘cheese-fest’. If you don’t want deep dish, other options are available. WARNING: the salads are HUGE!

Worth the Wait-This Is An Experience, Be Patient

By Designer |

My husband has been going to this place since the 1970s. I have heard legendary stories about this pizza pie and decided to go. We got there at 11:10 thinking we were ahead of the game as it states it opens at 11:30. Line was already out the door and the place was full. TIP_ They open earlier if there is a line. We were told an hour wait. So we took a seat by the bar and met some fun great people to share some cocktails with. Be patient with the bartender as he knows who is next(although it may not seem like it) and makes a killer bloody Mary. There is no number system but the maitre d goes by memory and he is spot on. BRING CASH as thats all they accept. Started with the salad once we were seated and the pizza pie takes 40 minutes. be Worth the wait. It was delish. Not one crumb was left. Our waitress was fabulous and very attentive even though it was packed. The decor has not changed since the 70's according to my husband. Cannot wait to return as this pizza pie is like no other.

Best food we had in Chicago

By Keith K |

Wow. My wife and I came here on the recommendation of friends. First of all, make a reservation. We called the first day we arrived and the first available time was 4 days later. You can stand in line but expect to wait a while. Remember it’s cash only. We ordered the Mediterranean bread, a small chefs salad and 2 - 1-2 pound pizza pockets. The bread was life changing and the pizza pockets weren’t far behind. We probably could have shared a 1/2 pound pocket due to the amount of food. Seriously, if I had to make one recommendation while in Chicago I would tell you to come try this restaurant. Just be prepared to leave incredibly stuffed.

The Best in Chicago

By Jorgeqro |

Just delicious!! The Pot Pie is like a pizza back and forth and is fantastic. With a half-pound serving pir person is not enough. We also ordered a Mediterranean bread and it is the size of a pizza! Also very tasty but it was too much

Is it Chicago Style Pizza? Oh heck yeah.

By Stephen S |

Pizza or Pot Pie - whatever you say, it is Chicago Style deep dish and when you eat it, your body defies the laws of physiology and digestion, and you keep eating and eating. Start off with the salads, because you’ll be waiting awhile. It comes with two salad dressings - a cream and an oil based dressing. They taste great mixed together. The mushroom and meat pie? Hang on folks, it’s go time! They will flip these pies over onto your plate, pry off a ceramic dish, and then leave you with all the wonderful chewy Chicago Style cheese that you love. The half pound is a very good meal for one. We were advised to get two half-pound pizzas instead of one 1-pound pizza to share, as it is the same price. Wait was 2 hours and about 1 hour after you ordered. Cash only. Still highly worth it and recommended enthusiastically!

Pizza and Bread

By MonroeWise |

Really long wait so it's recommended that someone arrives early and reserve the table. The pizza was surprisingly great. They flip it over in front of you and it look really weird, but it's really good. I love the atmosphere (intimate and cozy). If you can withstand the long wait, I believe you will be satisfied.

Excellent, very different take on pizza

By Macawley B |

Visited with friends with Chicago and they recommended this out of the box place. We are sure glad they did!! We heard that lines could get very long, so even though they open at 4, we arrived at around 3;15. They let us in the door with no wait around 3:30! (Good tip to arrive early, because it got packed quickly) Food was fresh and delicious and service was very good

Unique Chicago classic

By Tierandy |

With all of the difficulties with seating we ordered online for curbside. Remember- CASH ONLY. The pot pie pizza was fantastic- I’m so sorry my wife n I only got half pounders. The left overs heat up so well. Definitely get the garlic sour cream dipping sauce- get one for each pot pie you order. Can’t comment on the grinders this time- but will definitely try one next time. We will also order a few frozen pizzas to go. Don’t be on time for your pick up though. I ordered at 1:00 to be picked up at 3:00.... we got our order at 3:30. But whatever, I’m sure they’re doing the best that they can and for this classic Chicago gem, it’s worth it. It’s such a unique place.

You won’t regret going here

By Karen R |

Deep dish pizza? Nope. I eat at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder for the pot pie. It’s worth the wait!!! The Mediterranean bread and salads are good. Make sure you put this on your lisy

Exceptional customer in a hidden gem.

By salima1357 |

It was my first time visiting this place. Hidden gem near Lincoln park. Small restaurant with high quality customer service. We were greeted at the door and the hostess took us to our table. Our server Alex was so incredible. This is what customer service should be like. She suggested a drink for me since I asked something light on my stomach mojito without the mint. Absolutely phenomenal service. Thank you Alex. I will definitely be asking for you next time I visit. Thank you. And thank you for the sweet ending.

Worth the wait

By jpmfv@hotmail.com |

We had to wait for more than an hout to get a table here, but it was well worth the wait. Amazing bowl pizza, delicious. They only accept cash but have an ATM at the spot.

Must stop in Chicago for the best pizza and apps!

By Just4relaxing |

This place was amazing. Ken was our waiter and was great. Very busy so best to make reservations. Everting we had was delicious. The salad dressings were very good as well as the Mediterranean Bread was unbelievable and the pizza bowls were over the top. If you can plan ahead before going to Chicago, make time for this place! Highly recommend!!! 5 + stars.

Finally went!

By Kelsey A |

I always ate the leftovers when the parents would go and they were good but nothing beats going in person! Small restaurant, it pays to go early otherwise you will wait a long time. Portion sizes are enormous but so good! I recommend getting the Mediterranean flatbread (pictured)! My mother in law and I shared the vegetarian grinder (pictured) and a 1/2 pound vegetarian pizza pot pie. Both were GOOD! Ended the night with the tortoni (pictured). A must go to place!

Time Warp Experience

By BML111 |

We headed here as we had heard it had Al Capone connections (the St. Valentine’s Day massacre took place across the street) and also for the pizza pie experience. We knew that lines can be long so arrived at 4:45pm on a Friday. People were already waiting outside. We entered a dark, wood laden, bustling room where a small, older man motioned to us and asked us how many. He did not take our name or write anything down. He told us to stand in the bar area which we happily did. The restaurant is small with every square inch covered in dark wood with tables in the center of the room and booths with high wood backs around the perimeter - a very old-world vibe. In less than 45 minutes, the man came and got us and ushered us into a booth in the back. The waitress was cheery and pleasant. She explained the menu and made suggestions. We started with the chef salad and Mediterranean bread for the table. The bread is like a huge, thin pizza dough doused with herbs-yum. The chef’s salad is a huge mound of chopped iceberg lettuce surrounded by tomatoes, onions and olives. Dressings of sweet and sour poppyseed and sour cream garlic dressings are served on the side. The waitress told us it was awesome to mix the two dressings and she was so right-so good. You also dip the bread into these dressings. For our entrees, we ordered 3 half-pounder pies (one-pounder pies are also available). There were four of us, one being a large eater. The pies are presented looking like a dome of dough over a bowl. The waitress loosens the edges then inverts the pies at the table. What you see looks like a very large upside-down mushroom cap filled with cheese. You then cut it up and enjoy. The sauce inside under the cheese is like an absolutely heavenly Bolognese-to die for. We had no trouble devouring our pies. We left very full and had a wonderful experience that we hope to repeat in the near future. Bring CASH as they do not accept credit cards!

After 50 years Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder is Still New and Exciting

By Chicago Bob |

You can’t swing a dead cat in downtown Chicago without hitting a deep dish pizza place. There’s Pizano’s on Madison and Michigan, Uno’s in River North, and Lou Malnatti’s everywhere. (In fact, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Lou Malnatti’s.) Giordano’s is my favorite, but they get hit by dead cats a lot too. Most people in Chicago will tell you that only tourists eat deep dish pizza and people that actually live in Chicago prefer thin crust, or “tavern style” pizza. (Why, then, does every neighborhood outside of downtown Chicago have a Giordano’s and Lou Malnatti’s?) The best pizza in Chicago, in my opinion, isn’t deep dish or thin crust. The best comes in a big, percolating dough ball at a place that only takes cash. Oven Grinders has the most new and outstanding pizza I ever had. It’s located on North Clark Street in Lincoln Park. It’s across the street from the building where Al Capone’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place. In fact there’s a rumor that the building was a lookout post for some of the massacre’s assassins (but that’s just a rumor). The building burnt to the ground in 1971 (what is it with Chicago and fires?) An attorney by the name of Albert Beaver bought the property and wanted it to have something new and outstanding, so he created a recipe for what he called “pizza pot pie”. It’s made from scratch with tripled-raised Sicilian bread dough. It is filled with plum tomato sauce, sausage, mushrooms, and cheese. It’s baked upside down and when it’s brought to the table it’s flipped over. (You have to eat it with a fork if you don’t want pizza all over your face, shirt, and lap.) They have other salty and delicious things on the menu, but why the hell would you order anything else from a place that has pizza pot pie? Currently Oven Grinders only takes cash: a sign of a place who’s recipe is so new and outstanding that it doesn’t have to do something new and outstanding like take credit and debit cards.

The pizza pot pie was underwhelming

By Kevin |

I ordered their flagship pizza pot pie, which was just as gooey, greasy, and melty as all of the pictures would suggest. The bread/crust was decent with a hint of garlic and a consistency that seemed to suggest it was almost undercooked. The sauce was passable and there was ample amounts of melted cheese. It was unfortunate that you couldn't customize it in any way (i.e. add meat to it). It wasn't a bad experience, but for $30, I had hoped for something more than what ultimately amounted to a giant doughy breadstick.

Pizza

By Dreamer288344 |

Be ready to wait but it is totally worth it!!! One of the best meals I've had!!!! The pizza came in a bowl, your choice is vegetarian or everything with a meat sauce.

First time and what an experience!

By Dnc6471 |

Our family took us there on our last full day in Chicago. Oh, heck yes! Mediterranean bread, the salad and a half pounder. What a delicious experience. I am a foodie and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Get there early or be prepared to wait. We were there at 4:15pm. No wait time. The staff are very cordial and helpful and compliant to my family's food allergies. You guys offer an excellent food experience! Thank you!

Great Food / Excellent Service

Great food, great times, amazing atmosphere ! ! Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder DEFINITELY an experience. Thank you for pizza.

True Chicago Pizza

By Bigman |

Spent the evening in downtown Chicago. Time got away from us & before we realized it was after 11PM. Decided to call in a pizza order. We received a true Chicago deep dish pizza. The aroma from the pizza made us even hungrier. Glad it tasted every bit as good as it smelled. I’ll be back in Chicago & will be visiting Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder again. Thank you!

delicious and great experience

By J E |

I was taken here by an old friend from Chicago while I was in town for work. What a wonderful find that probably would never hit a business traveler’s radar without a local. Tucked into the ground floor of a brownstone, the old-style wood décor was wonderful. We were fortunate enough to be seated right away. The pizza was interesting, built upside down in a crock, baked, and then upended tableside onto your plate. Delicious, and true to many Chicago pizzas, wonderfully heavy. What a great experience.

Good Pizza and Fun place

By pooktubby |

I always came here every time i had visited Chicago. The pizza pot pie with chunk of cheese, tomato’s sauce with the mushrooms, SUPERB. Everyone drunk beers and cocktails while waiting for about one hour and a half, but we all were enjoyed.

Excellent lunch !

By Prasad W |

Reached at 1 pm . There was a long wait but table for 2 was instantly available so that was lucky . The appetizer bread was unbelievable! My son had the sausage pizza pot pie and I had the vegetarian. We both absolutely loved it . Had rum gelato for dessert and it was fantastic . Lots of food so we were done for the day ( no dinner 😀)

Worth the wait

By Roe090 |

This place is a must stop if you’re visiting Chicago. Not only do they have their one of a kind pizza pot pie, but their grinders are just about the best in the state. Don’t be surprised to wait about an hour to get a table, unless you plan on getting there right before opening (there will still be a line). Also, it’s cash only so come prepared. All in all, it’s delicious one of a kind food and you won’t be sorry.

Long Wait

By JerseyIndyFamily |

We LOVE the food and ambiance here but the wait for a table is insane. WE could accept that but the way names are taken and communication provided is really awful. In todays world, why is there no reservation system? Or an APP? Or text system? As we learned after 2 1/2 hours, people come in and leave a name and come back 2 hours later and walk right in. If you are a local, that is great, but for the rest of us totally unfair. They should put in a place a control that if you leave, you lose your place in line. After the last visit we won't be going back.

Pleasantly Surprised!

By Eric W. |

Hanging out in Chicago for work and I HAVE to check out some pizza right? So I was met with a pleasant surprise! Here's what happened. CASH ONLY. Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is right on the street so there is no private parking lot so you'll have to find a place on the street or in a nearby parking structure. Once at the restaurant you walk straight in and make a left. You're immediately taken back to like, the early 1900s. Lol. The lighting is very dim, very yellow, with reddish, heavy wood EVERYWHERE. It gives me tavern vibes for sure and is a little on the cramped side. I did not have a reservation, but because I was by myself, they made some room for me. Service: Devin took excellent care of me and made sure I had everything that I needed. Food: During my visit I had the chance to check out the Mediterranean Bread. It it enormous, fluffy and thin. The menu doesn't really tell you what's in it, so you're left to explore the flavors all on your own! The edges are super crispy and the flavors are EXPLOSIVE. I was expecting a lot of butter, but it wasn't terribly greasy! I got a lot of garlic and parmesan flavors, delicious. So I wanted to check out a traditional deep dish pizza, however, that's not what they sell! They sell a pizza pot pie which takes at least 35 minutes to make. So when you order yours you can get it in one of 2 sizes. The half-pounder or full-pounder. It's quite the show when they bring it out to you. They have to take it out of it's cooking fish and flip it onto your plate. So the pizza is is all made from scratch. It also comes with sausage, cheese and mushrooms, but you can have it without some of those things if you like. It was so cheesy, creamy and heavy. The flavors were very well balanced on top of the soft Sicilian-style crust. It was so thick though. Lol. It was very delicious and I see why this place has been in business for so long. Value: The Mediterranean Bread will cost you $13.00 and the full pound pizza pot pie is $35.00. That is a bit steep, but it's so much food that you can split it between 2 people. This isn't a place I'd go seeking out, but I'm so happy that I ran into it! Please check this place out if you're in the area!

Great food and service

By Lori S |

Have been wanting to try this place for years. Finally went after a day at the beach with my two teenage kids. It was really busy for a Tuesday night, got there at about 5 and waited approximately 45 min. But I did expect to wait based on reviews. Ken was our waiter. Told him it was our first visit and he was so helpful in explaining the menu and food. Even my 14 year old son who wouldn't normally notice good or bad service said "wow he's a REALLY good waiter!" We all shared a salad- delicious! and each ordered the pizza pot pie- also amazing! Love old school establishments like this... doing basically the same thing for years, doing it really well, staying in the same cute location, and keeping folks coming. Overall really good food and excellent service.

After 33 years as their biggest fan I will never return. The food is great but the host is rude and needs to retire.

By john b |

The food is great but the host is rude and needs to retire. He is no longer an asset to the company!!

The Hands Down BEST Pizza Pot Pie ever, Period!

By aspeck |

It was almost 30 years, back in my college days, that I last visited CPOG. My family had heard about this place for years, so when we finally had the opportunity to stop in Chicago for a night, reservations were made (thankfully because 30 years ago reservations were not accepted). We all left happy, full, and grateful for this awesome place. The service was the same fun, helpful, friendly service I remembered, the pizza was the same (albeit the sizes were smaller, but that was better because of the new vegetarian option), the salads were still amazing, and the Mediterranean Bread was still over-the-top delicious! A must visit restaurant!

Something different.

By Cynthia M |

While visiting, we asked which places to go for pizza and told this place is unique. Everyone says you need to try the appetizing Mediterranean Bread. It is okay, but very addicting. Very thing pizza looking bread with parmesan and seasonings. If you get an appetizer, you only need one pizza if there are 2 of you. It is in a bowl with a slow cooked meat sauce with mushrooms.

Lunch after a weekend in the city

By MariPTravels |

This restaurant has been on my bucket list for years and it finally came true!! The staff is outstanding, the food is absolutely delicious! The wait is long, but worth it! If you get hangry easily, bring a snack because the wait can be anywhere between an hour or longer. Once you see and taste the love that is poured into the food, you’ll understand why the wait is so long. They do not accept reservations and it’s a cash only place. Small and intimate place. My husband and I ordered the Mediterranean bread and a pot pie pizza. His had sausage and mine was vegetarian. The mozzarella was incredible. All ingredients are super fresh and your pallet knows it! Can’t wait to come back and visit again! Next time, I’ll wait for warmer weather! Lol.

Best Ever!

By ann |

Loved this place- the whole experience! The whole staff is like an orchestra! Plates never sat dirty on our table for more than 30 seconds- the bus boy wiped our table in between appetizers and entrees! Drinks seemed bottomless because we were never without! Oh and the food! Holy cow! Definitely a stop from now on! The whole experience was one of the best I’ve ever had! Thank you!

Must try, for ambiance and unique "pizza"

By Brandon & Bhaswati |

Great unique "pizza" experience. The pizza is more of a pot pie, the half pounder is more than enough if you're getting appetizers. Even then, it's a lot of cheese, so order accordingly. Mediterranean bread is also a great starter. Tear and share bread with great zaatar seasoning. Just keep in mind it's a bit oily, so if you're sensitive to that maybe look elsewhere. One of my favorite parts of this restaurant is the feel and aesthetic. It's just a great experience that deviates from the classic deep dish and Chicago tavern style pizzas.

Family Dinner with authentic tastes

By tjmm1985 |

Authentic tastes from the family salad to the Mediterranean Bread to the one pounder pizza. The bread is full of flavor and serves easily six folks. The pizza has great crust, tomato filling, and cheese!

Food that makes you happy!

By kbursott |

Every time I bring newcomers to this place they leave in a fog of happiness from the deliciousness baked into every pizza pot pie! The perfect meal is the American salad, Mediterranean bread and a half pounder with mushrooms ! This place is cash only, no reservations, standard wait time that doesn’t matter how long as it is worth it. A place to not miss!

No parking and much waiting

By Cindy T |

What a shame for such a popular place, you can only go here if you live in the neighborhood because there is zero parking and on a Sunday at 2pm the wait was over 90 minutes. I'm knocking it off my list because it's impossible to do.

Go if you want to have dog hair in your food and rude staff with a side of lackluster food

By Angel V |

DO NOT GO HERE! If you have any kind of allergies! I have went to this place in the past and it used to be a fabulous out of the way small place with good pizza pie. Now its nasty, you have a ridiculous wait even with a reservation and the staff is rude and treat you like cattle just to turn tables for more customers. BUT THE THING THAT DID IT FOR ME AND DISPITE MY LONG HISTORY OF GOING TO THIS PLACE IS THAT THERE WERE TWO DOGS ALL OVER THE TABLES LIKING AND EATING OFF THE SILVERWARE AND DISHES FUR FLYING EVERYWHERE!!! THE WAITRESS WAS PETTING THE DOG AND THEN GOING TO SERVE ANOTHER TABLE WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS! And before anyone starts about service animals they werent they were just brought in by people who felt privledge because they knew the staff wouldnt question them. The place is too small to have animals sitting on tables not to mention unsanitary! The board of health needs to be brought in. I will not be returning to this place. The pizza pies lack flavor and despite what they claim its sauce out of a can not slow cooked for hours. Manger needs to be fired!

Unique food with amazing taste!

By Gwen M |

This place is in a neat neighborhood and we found a street parking less than a block away. We arrived around 5:30pm on a Thursday and were seated right away. The service was impeccable and the place was packed. Three of us split a one pound pot pie and still had a to-go box. The food was amazing! The only thing I wished I’d understood beforehand is there are two menu items aside from salads. And they aren’t like what I expected, meaning we couldn’t add different pizza ingredients. It was either meat sauce or veggie sauce, not other ingredients like pepperoni, onions, etc.

Weekend getaway

By Ken B |

Had to order delivery to Hotel Lincoln. Arrived warm and good. As did the wings. I didn't like the cheese pizza but my son eats no meat. He loved it. Very original Chicago deep dish.

Very unique, very tasty!

By hughjorg |

We got our order to go. It was ready when we arrived and our order was promptly brought to us. We all (4) ordered the Pizza Pot Pie, 1 with meat and 1 vegetarian, and we were not disappointed. Lots of cheese and lots of flavor. Definitely will return.

Lots of Hype - Cash Only

By Flyby0161 |

Long waits, big following, small and quaint setting. Get your expectations aligned, if your going for pizza type flavors - no. It’s more of stromboli experience. The grinder are a bit different considering the bread, not crisp. Overall, a novelty place, not a repeat for cravings. Nothing special, but different.

Best unique pizza in all of Chi town

By Bombero590 |

Such a top notch way to enjoy one of Chi towns most iconic pizzas. After several attempts to make it here we finally did and boy were we and our taste buds pleased. If and when you do decide to visit make sure you come hungry, plan to wait a bit to get a table(Its well worth the wait) and finally its cash only... After waiting about thirty minutes outside we made our way into this tiny establishment and were seated by our awesome server who offered such great advice on our selections. We went with one of there salads and we each had a half pound pizza with the meat sauce. One recommendation from our server which is a must is to mix the two salad dressings they bring to the table.. WoW what a great flavor combination these two dressing create when spooned over your salad. A second tip is the portions are huge and we left salad behind so that we could enjoy all of our pizzas.. As for the pizza it was simply awesome. The meat sauce version with the whole mushrooms was fantastic and so packed with flavor. You are taken back with its presentation when they bring it to your table and its spun and spooned out from its bowl onto your plate....I can't highly recommend this establishment enough and I know when I head back to Chicago I will be back to enjoy their awesome pizzas..

I like pizza so much and I like to taste different kind of pizza . I ate vegetarian pizza that is delicious 😋

It’s a pizza pot pie

By CarrieShaw |

This pot pie is different from Chicago deep dish pizza. It’s worth the wait. The service was great and so is the food!

Great Salad and Flatbread

By Bonnie T |

We’re not big fans of the pizza at Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder. (Although it is very popular because it’s served upside down, kind of like a pot pie). However, we really like the salad and flatbread. Add a glass of wine, and it’s the perfect meal. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, and there’s always a long wait. And the restaurant takes cash only. Kudos to the following employees for a great job: Brian (host), Devin (server) and Leo (busboy).

Yo Vinnie...Great Dish

By Midrad |

This place is a dark, old school maffioso place that only takes cash but leaves a lasting impression. It's a different twist on pizza and flatbread that you just have to try... Start it off with a family style chef salad with poppyseed and caesar dressing and you won't be disappointed... Not sure what to do.... They'll hold your hand.

Fantastic Experience in Lincoln Park

By Jeffer2622 |

Happened on this place while walking with 6 women and it’s soo quaint and special. Small and older with the best breads and salads but people come for the pizza. It’s made in a bowl with beautiful and yummy yummy crust and cheesy fillings. Not your normal pizza as the bowl is dumped over and the cheese all melted on top. It’s a meaty sauce with full mushrooms(to remove if you don’t like) Just 2 types the one with meat or a vegetarian. You cannot add items or take any away. No round or other pizza. Thy do have subs too. An experience for sure and awesome food and service!,

Everything was great!

By kimkaydee |

We arrived early, only 10-15 minutes after they opened, but were told there was already a 45 minute wait. They had a temporary awning up for cooler temps, which made the wait a little more enjoyable. Once seated we were greeted by the nicest waitress. She was very helpful and quick with everything. We ordered their signature salad, Mediterranean bread appetizer and a small pizza pot pie to share at the table. The salad was great. The bread app was so good! The pizza pot pie was beyond worth the trip! The meat sauce in the pizza pot pie was the best! So good!! We will definitely go back!

Worth the Wait

By Alexia V |

There's always a line out the door, but 100% worth the food. I grew up in Chicago and always recommend this place to anyone visiting, there are no other pizza pies like this! I always order the Mediterranean flat bread to start [it's enough for 3-4 to share] and a personal pie. The place has a really cool history too. Be sure to come hungry!

Long wait, poorly organized waiting, medicocre food

By drveko |

This place came highly recommended and was very busy when we arrived at almost 2 pm. The host told us 1.5 hour wait for 2 people. When we went to the rear of the restaurant there were two 6-top tables which were unoccupied- then a group of 6 people came in and were seated right away. I wonder whether they could have taken three groups of 2 or 2 and 4 to sit at one of these (I honestly would not have minded sitting next to strangers in this place. We ended up getting it to go which took 30 minutes. When we got the food, I asked for Parmesan and peppers which are all over the restaurant. They said no Parmesan and peppers for to go. They said we have no containers. I asked for a small to go container and they said no. Finally the manager said we could open. Our already well packed containers and sprinkle some on so we did. It was cash only no credit card so bring your money. Also when we got to eat it, well, it was okay. Like spaghetti sauce in a bread bowl with cheese on it. Had a few mushrooms in it, but other than that, nothing special. The grinders were also mediocre. Meatball sub from subway is honestly almost as good and the Italian was just okay too. Overall definitely not worth the $20 cab fare to and from and the $50 ticket and the 1.5 hour wait. Find something close to your hotel or go to giordanos. You’ll be able to use your credit card and you’ll be happier with the wait and the food. My two cents.

Good, but 3 hours?

By AmsterdamDame |

My sister raves about this place and goes here often. As it’s a holiday week, they are open for lunch so it was difficult to gauge how busy they would be for dinner. We arrived at 3:30pm and were told it was a 1 hour and 45 minute wait. Wow! The owner/manager doesn’t take names but remembers faces. It is an amazing gift. Part of our party went for a walk and had a coffee as it was too busy for 6 of us to wait. Food is original and good. Salad dressings are delicious (lettuce is iceberg with extra veggies). The pizza pot pies are filmed and snapped at every table when they come out of the kitchen. Very original concept. I found them better with chili pepper and parm, but that was just me. The place is small and packed to the brim with little space to move. When we left, the wait was up to 3+ hours. I will probably get flack for saying I don’t think it’s worth that kind of wait, so would suggest putting your name (or face!) on the list, then going to Zoo Lights around the corner for a couple of hours!

Upsetting experience at a Chicago legend

By Natasha |

Very poor Salad - just leaves and 2/3 pieces of artichoke and tomatoes. All ingredients had no taste. Sources for salad were either garlic or super salty. Very famous pizza would probably score 3/5 maximum. Too much dough - and it was partly raw. Don’t even try prosecco - it was badly sweet. Overall extremely upset with the dinner. The only nice thing about the restaurant was the waiter and corona bier out of the bottle.

A MUST!!

By Amanda |

Was a bit hesitant since other reviews mentioned the wait, we have 2 young girls. While we had about a 45 minute wait, the staff was delightful & we had drinks at the bar. The doorman will never forget a face, just remembered to come get us when our turn for a table-too cool. Menu is straightforward and doesnt disappoint, GET THE MEDITERRANEAN BREAD!

A must visit in Lincoln Park

By Joseph |

We visited on a Sunday after Blue Man Group. Arrived about 3:00. Told wait was one hour twenty; we were seated in about 45 minutes. Service was excellent. We had the Mediterranean bread, which is great and would be wonderful with a salad. It's so large we had to leftovers. We would love some marinara dipping sauce with it. We had the pizza pot pie which is fantastic. We had the half-pound which is plenty. We did try the Tortoni dessert and O.M.G. is it good. Great place. We were lucky to find street parking about a block away. They have valet parking for $15. There are only two small benches inside to wait; they have an enclosed atrium outside the front door to wait (no seats); this is a CASH ONLY establishment and there is an ATM in the entry way.

Great Food, Long Wait

By Clay G |

Look, the food here is incredible. Like absolutely inconceivably good. The Mediterranean bread makes for a perfect appetizer. It’s big. It’s easy to eat. It’s got all sorts of flavor. The pizza pot pies are also really good. The flavors packed into it makes every bite an experience. I really love the use of green peppers in the sauce and think it makes a huge impact. Overall, food was fantastic. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait a while to get in here. We stopped by and put our name in around 5:15 and didn’t end up getting seated till around 9. Normally that’s not an issue because there’s plenty of things to do in Chicago. It’s a big city with lots of activities. However, when you come back around 8 and they say it’ll be 15-20 more minutes, you don’t leave to take part in any of those activities. Instead you spend the next hour in the waiting area progressively getting hungrier as the scents of fresh pizza wash over you. That’s really my only beef with this place, but it left me feeling a little sour before my meal.

You will have to wait, but the wait is worth it, excellent food and service. The fast is very friendly.

First time’s a charm

By Navigator727996 |

Six of us dined here for the first time on a Thursday nite around 9 PM. We expected to have to wait for a table, but we were pleasantly surprised and seated immediately. (BTW: I read an earlier 1 star review given by someone who has never eaten here because the wait was too long. Really!!! Good things are worth waiting for. Shame on you for posting a bad review because they are popular.) We were seated in a booth. The place is tight and the aisles are narrow. But the service is prompt and the food is tip top. We opted for a antipasto for 6 which could easily have sufficed for 8. Several ordered the pizza pot pie 1/2 pounder. Unique. Had to try it. The others ordered meatball grinders. And we all tried the Mediterranean flat bread. Stuffed. Stuffed. Stuffed. The food was great and the experience memorable. I can understand why people endure the wait for a table. It’s worth it.

Pizza Pot Pie and more

By Blain H |

Busy place. Wait time was manageable, though. Food was beyond expectation. Wait staff was very knowledgeable and excellent. The amount of food provided was over the top. Well worth the price. Even though the dining room is fairly compact, the booths make it seem as if you are in your own little world that happens to serve delicious and plentiful food. The signature dish, pizza pot pie, is served with style, panache and graciousness. Cannot say enough good about the experience.

Service and quality has gone downhill compared to how awesome it USED to be.

By Jmw W |

Can you believe they refused to put extra sauce on a meatball grinder. They said it's their policy. We placed a $170+ order and they didn't care. When I spoke to a manager she said it was their policy and they would never give extra sauce on a sandwich. I called a talked to a second manager who gave the excuse that it takes over 10 hours for the sauce to cook and that the recipe is very precise. Not sure what that has to do with an extra spoonful of sauce on a sandwich.

Best pizza ever!!

I was there with my sister, and we chose to try pizza pie.. it was delicious.. best pizza ever.. will come back soon

We remember this place from 40 years ago. It's still fun. Pizza is a bit more watery than our memory, waits certainly not as long, charming service.

MY FIRST PIZZA POT PIE

By Accessible Travel Guy |

This is an iconic eatery in Chicago that’s packed with a lot of history! I enjoyed my experience here, food was great, and the service was amazing. Portions are large, so go there hungry, share or be prepared to take lots home. Posting the menus here for you. I would definitely come here again There’s along wait if you don’t have reservations, or do what I did and come early and ask if they can get you a spot. I had the pizza pot pie, which they are known for, and It was great 😊 I wouldn’t say this is wheelchair accessible as the bathroom would be impossible to get into and there are stairs to get into the restaurant.

Prepare for a wait, but worth it!

By Joanna C |

A delicious, creative, and unique treat in Chicago! Upon arrival, you are greeted by a manager whom you tell how many is in your party. Don't expect to give him a name, he remembers you by face, and we were given a hour and a half wait. He is actually very reliable in his memory. The restuarant is smaller, so waiting outside is an option as well. Don't expect a ton of options on the menu, but you don't need them! Pizza pot pies and oven grinders (subs) are the two entrees available. The pizza pot pies are delicious! There is no kids menu, but I simply shared with my 4 year old. The wait staff is very busy, but attentive. Would recommend as an off the beaten path restuarant, just make sure you aren't on a time crunch if going!

Great Pizza alternative you shouldn't miss when in the city.

By rob h |

I like this place for a date night. The cool brownstone look, lighting, and ambiance always feel like you are somewhere only those 'in-the-know' find. I always think I'll try something else, but don't. The Pizza Pot Pie is unbelievably good. Starter cocktail, glass of Chianti, and follow it up with the Tortoni - date night done right!

Simply the best

By Doglover51 |

We never fail to visit this place when in Chicago - the most unique and delicious pizza pies ever! Deep dish and wonderful creations! Cash only and usually long waits but oh so worth it! Great service - incredible food!

Unique atmosphere, unique pizza

By Michelle C |

Oven grinder pizza is not your traditional crusted, cheese topped pizza. It’s more like a pizza pot pie (?) Hard to describe but definitely worth trying. And the garlic focaccia bread was AMAZING! They don’t take credit cards so bring cash (their ATM in the lobby wasn’t working so we had to hike a mile and back to a bank while our friends waited for a table!)

Go for the antipasto and Mediterranean bread! Skip the pizza pot pie.

By Elizabeth A |

Best antipasto I’ve ever had, highly recommend it with the Mediterranean bread. As native Chicagoan who loves Chicago pizza - skip the pizza pot pie, I was very disappointed in it.

Amazing!

By samlovex3 |

Honestly, I have nothing bad to say besides why can't they be open 24/7!! This place has such a beautiful atmosphere, super friendly staff, and amazing food!! A real hidden gem in Chicago!

Evening Meal

By Graeme C |

The maitre de at this establishment is amazing. Arranged a table for us within the 25 minutes he had quoted. We only had time tp order drinks ay the bar before the table was ready. We just had to have the iconic Mediterranean bread, a highly seasoned flat bread with additional seasonings and Parmesan cheese that could be added to individual taste, and the pot pie pizza. These come in two sizes, 1/2 pound and 1 pound. We found the 1/2 pound size was more than satisfactory. Excellent food and service. The restaurant's owner came by to check that our meal was satisfactory. A nice touch.

I take all my visiting friends here.

By Molly |

I tell everyone about this place. I love it. Get the marg pizza if you are a vegetarian. Awesome beer selection. Can't recommend enough.

So good we went twice!

By James |

The Mediterranean bread and salad with dips were beautiful though we struggled to eat the even more delicious pizza pot pie for our mains. We just had to come back again and only order the pot pie so we could finish it. My advice is to go on an empty stomach! Our server Tyler was exceptional on our first visit - very attentive and helpful, and just an all round decent guy. It was less friendly the second time, more functional, but it was ok. I think Tyler spoilt us the first time ;-) Oh, and the dipping sauces that come with the salad are to die for! Can’t wait to return.

Super Unique Experience

By Brian S |

When you walk into Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder, you take a step back in time half a century (or more). They ONLY take cash, they do not take reservations, and you are going to wait! But, you are then going to be taken great care of and you will eat amazing pizza! Get the Half Pounder - you will not be disappointed, or hungry!

I am late with this review.

By Kathy Jo |

My wife and I were so excited to try this. First off, we were here late September. Our server Alvaro made this experience so fun. We had a salad and pizza pot pie. I would probably ask for only half of the lettuce on the salad because it was messy. Delicious but messy. Alvaro plated the pizza pot pie beautifully. We really enjoyed coming here. The dough is like soft yeast rolls! Such a historic place that came up with a novel approach to pizza. Fun!!!

A hidden gem!

By jdny33 |

Pizza Pot Pie should be on your list of things to eat in Chicago. Went at 1130pm and the place was full. Simple but amazing

Tourist. Trap.

By procyclist |

Two words: Tourist trap. We have looked forward to going for years. I mean a decade at least. We knew the waits were long, so we were prepared (our wait was 3 hours and 15 minutes). The FB photos and videos portray a rich, cheesy variation on the Chicago deep dish, but in a personal-sized bowl. What you don't see is now ridiculously cramped the place is. If you're over 100 pounds, you might not fit down the 14-inch-wide aisles or fit into the miniature booths. The wait for food is somewhat lengthy, too, which - if it were good food - would be understandable. In fact, the food is laughably banal. Not nearly as cheesy as the photos would have you think. The sauce is runny and bland, like a can of tomato sauce with green onions and a slight amount of finely ground meat. If you're like us and think you have to go here because it's a viral must-do in Chicago - believe me, it's not. Save your $200 for someplace good.

By Slytrail |

Legendary Chicago pizza-pot-pie! This place is an experience from the waiting period (avg 1hr30) to the degustation of this unique pizza.. They have the pizza-pot-pie veggie with wheat crust and whole mushroom. To die for!!! Have the SMALL salad for 4. Just delicious! Lot of fun in a unique atmosphere.. Try it!!

Unusual but great pizza.

Discovered this place while near Lincoln Park. Great great pizza . Go early and expect to wait in line. It's worth the wait. Bar is good, for is awesome. One to visit.

Travel channel doesn’t lie

By Jam_or_Jelly |

My wife and I first heard of this restaurant on the Travel Channel. I grew up in Chicago and had never heard of this place, and we were planning a trip down there. The first night we were there we decided to go to the Chicago pizza and oven grinder company. Upon arriving, we were told that it would be about a 45 minute wait, which is fine. I asked who I give my name to, and I was told, “the maître d’ does not forget a face”. So at this point I was really curious to see how long it would take to get it. We went to the bar and grab a couple of drinks to wait. Within a half an hour the maître d’ came over and grabbed us. So they didn’t lie about the first part. We were told upon seating that the pizza pot pies that they are so famous for would take about half an hour to make. That’s fine, so we ordered a flatbread appetizer that they have on their menu. It was fantastic. Once our pot pies arrived, we saw that this place really did live up to the hype. They bring the pizzas to the table and remove the bowl they’re baked in right in front of you. This place really did live up to the hype, I would recommend this to anyone.

Good, but not worth a two-hour wait

By MC0228 |

This restaurant is good, and the Pizza Pot Pie is excellent (a bit overrated, but still excellent). That said, it is a first come, first served establishment, and if you aren’t there right when they open, plan on at least an hour wait. This said, there is an enclosed waiting area (standing room only), so it will keep you out of the elements. If you are visiting the city, parking in the area is expensive, so if you’ve parked somewhere that is decently affordable, I would suggest that you Uber to and from this restaurant. You definitely won’t leave hungry. Although I’ve never had pizza here, I do always order the Pizza Pot Pie. Although I think that it is a bit overrated and over-hyped, I do have to say that it is extremely good. It may not be the stuff of legend (as some tend to describe it), but it definitely won’t disappoint either. Seating is cramped, and the booths are small. If you are over 200 lbs, you’re going to be squeezed very tightly against the table in your booth. There’s no way around it. That’s the only way that they can pack as many people into the restaurant as they do. Overall, I would suggest this restaurant if you have time to kill, and don’t mind the wait.

Disappointed is the key word!

By Patrick G |

Disappointed is the key word! I’m from Chicago and love pizza. I’ve heard nothing but good things. With the crazy long lines, I thought of course I’ll enjoy the pizza. Ate there at opening this past weekend before the 2 hour lines started. The Mediterranean Bread they offer is amazing, really great flavor and cool app. Very cool atmosphere as well. The pizza though.....no flavor and unreal that the only change you can make to the pizza is with or without whole mushrooms. It was like eating the watery inside of lasagna with no noodles. And the bread bowl has zero flavor as well. Don’t know if both mine and my wife’s both were botched but thought it was a review that was in need of sharing.

SOOOOOO good!!!

By Jessica B |

We came all the way back to Chicago this last weekend mainly because of here! We actually loved that we were able to reserve a table online now and didn't have to wait over an hour like last time to get a table. The service and food were amazing yet again! I can't explain it, you just have to try a pop over......trust me when I say it will be one of your favorite things!

Pizza Pot Pie!

By Henry’s Take |

Valentine’s Day has demarcated the relationship paths for many people over the years. On this day some relationships move forward, some backwards, and some end altogether. In the 1920’s the city of Chicago had simultaneous relationships with multiple crime bosses, and 96 years ago today Al Capone put an end to that and made his relationship with Chicago exclusive. Although never convicted of the crime, Al is generally considered to be responsible for the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” that eliminated his remaining rivals and consolidated his control as a merchant of vice. Local legend has it that 2121 North Clark Street was utilized to serve as the lookout to plot the crime that took place across the street. Now the home of the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company, its relationship interests with Chicagoans have been “strictly honorable” and while that relationship has evolved over the past 53 years, their recipes have never needed to. Perhaps most famous for their “Pizza Pot Pie”, this cheesy masterpiece elicits groans of satisfaction with each bite. Inspired by deep dish pizza, the sauce is cooked for a staggering 9 hours, the Sicilian dough is triple-raised, and the Wisconsin brick cheese is made specifically for this restaurant. The enjoyment of this dish is further accentuated by its presentation when being removed from its pan by your server once it arrives at your table. If you share the half-pounder pot pie you should have room left to also share a grinder (which features the same cheese and the vegetarian version of their amazing sauce). Cash is the only form of payment that is accepted (Al would have ❤️ that), the dining room is slightly darkened for ambiance with period music playing (also for Al?), and reservations are recommended unless you can arrive near opening (or have connections to Al 😳 ). And that’s…Henry’s Take. #chicagopizzapotpie Recommendation credit @ct_miller19 Editor’s Note: A special thanks to our server Caroline for not only excellent service, but also for the helpful background information. 🙌

different than pizza as you know it

if you want to try a truly unique pizza, then you must go here. it's made in a bowl and scooped out at your table so the cheese is on top...yummy!!

2-3 Hour Wait Headache Always!! Worst Restaurant Experience Ever!!!

By Dude Man |

The mediterrean bread was good! Way too much cheese on my pizza pot pie though! Tasted like a cheese soup! It was a 2-3 hour wait for a table!!! Witnessed the most lord of the flies customer interaction ever which spoiled my appetite!!! We had been waiting 2 hours already and were a couple parties away from being seated. There is no reservations allowed here. Some dude just walks in off the street. Steals a table after people just got up and finished their meal. The guy claims the table for himself to not wait the 2-3 hours and cuts everyone who was waiting! Myself and my family included!! Fights with the host and manager bossing them around and refuses to get up causing a huge ruckus. Somehow the Manager gives in after 15-20 minutes of arguing with the guy and allows him to keep the table and his whole party of 11 sits after and cut everyone in the restaurant waiting! I have never been so dumbfounded over the type of lord of the flies type exchange. They should of kicked this guy out! I will never go back!! Everyone who he cut was super upset! It was unbelievable!! Terrible experience!! The food wasn’t even that good for the 2-3 hour wait and drama that happened. They only accept cash too.

Hidden Gem -CASH only - TRY Everything

By Niko T |

A hidden secret which is well worth the wait - its 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on how many decide today was the day to eat here - Be prepared to wait or not since this place does not take reservations and only takes CASH - other than that - once you are seated - be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes while your pizza is being prepared - The appetizers come out almost as soon as you order - but the Pizza - takes the longest - A fun nostalgic place for friends or family - this place will not disappoint -

Try this place at least once!

By Simple38 |

We arrived on a Sunday 30 minutes after they opened. There were about 3 parking spaces open on the street parking, and there was a valet present. There is a glass enclosure at the entrance which allows you to wait inside for the valet or if you are being picked up. The business was mostly full when we arrived, but we did not have to wait to be seated. We ordered the half pound pot pie, (there is a one pound size available). Wait time was about twenty minutes which we were informed of when we ordered. The business and the bathroom was clean, the service was good.

BLOWN AWAY!!!!!

By Hezzie26 |

We were BLOWN away. All the way from Toronto, Ontario. This was on our, TO DO LIST, while in Chicago. This was by far, the most amazing Pizza Pot Pie!!!!! The appetizer bread was outta this world too. I don’t think any pizza, panzerotti, stromboli can top this!!!! The wait is worth every mouthful!!!!!!

Good...but worth the wait?

By Jairo L |

Let me just say that the pizza pot pie is very good. The meat sauce especially was really nice and it’s definitely a unique dish. The Mediterranean bread was really nice too. I’m not sure it was worth the two hour wait. There’s no app to track your place in line. And the place is cash only. One positive is that we met some really cool people while waiting. I’m glad I tried this place after meaning to for so long, but next time I’d probably do something else with my time.

Pizza Pot Pie

By MarissaV |

If you love pizza you will LOVE pizza pot pie and that is what you should order! Please note that this restaurant does only take cash and there is an ATM just inside. This restaurant is very small inside and there will be a wait so if you go into dinner with that in mind you will have a good experience. My group shared the chefs salad which came loaded with toppings and two kinds of house made dressings and we each had a 1/2 pound pizza pot pie. The pizza pot pie does not come with many customizable options, simply white or wheat bread, meat or no meat sauce and with our without mushroom. They also will gladly put on a show so you can get a video for your socials. Wait staff was extremely polite and attentive. I really would recommend this place and who doesn’t love the homemade chocolate that comes with your receipt. Stop reading about it and go here for dinner!!!

Best Pizza and Grinder I had in Chicago

By Cato |

Little neighborhood place but had great pizza pot pie and grinders. We had one of both and was a lot of food. It is not very big, so I am sure it could get very crowded. We went on a Sunday for lunch and only waited 15 minutes. I would definitely go again. It put all the hyped up tourist pizza places to shame.

Great place to experience great food

By Scharven |

Get the pizza pot pie - period. The salads were great - but it's the pot pie. The place is a bit dark, but that's the mood - good for some, maybe not others - booths are really tight for seating a large person. Great waiter - superb service.

Pizza Pot Pie Was Ok. Preferred the Mediterranean Bread.

By Georgianna C |

It was my first time in Chicago so family brought me here. The place was known for it's pizza pot pie so that's what we ordered. A few things: - I am a 5'2" girl and this was quite filling. I split with my fiance and I still couldn't finish it! - Taste: it was good but not "wow." It's one of those wherein I don't mind eating here again if a family or friend wanted to but I wouldn't crave for it or go out of my way to have this. Strangely enough, I enjoyed the Mediterranean Bread, the appetizer of sorts we had. It was super thin but flavorful and rich in garlic.

Great food but crazy busy!

By Patrick T |

Showed up 30-40 min early for a 1015pm reservation. Booked the reservation about 10 days out and 1015 was the earliest I could get on a Saturday night. If you can, book farther out. Place was packed, they were behind was was told 30 min behind. Didn't get a table until 1045. After being seated, our server Samantha was amazing, so helpful and personable! Walked us through everything and was great conversation but not too much. Loved her! Ordered the Mediterranean bread, and is was huge and soooo tasty. We couldn't stop eating it even knowing more food was to come. Pot pies all around. Exactly what I expected and more. Yummy is not a good enough word for it. Couldn't finish it, my only regret. (too much med bread!) Would have given it 5 stars if not for the terrible wait and the crowded front with all the others waiting too. (An 8 person reservation at 830 was seated around 10-1015).

My Preference? Chicago Style Pizza!

By NXTTRP |

Our lunch / dinner on a Sunday at Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder was highly anticipated. But for me, I’ll take Chicago style pizza from any of the top 5-6 “famous pizzerias” in the Windy City. It’s simply a matter of the filling to dough relationship. There’s a lot of dough in a pizza pot pie. We walked the Lincoln Park Zoo during the 1 1/2 wait for a table as it was a delightful day. The CPOG is a small, dark venue and the number of specific food options is small. Our service was excellent and clearly the pizza pot pie audience provides a loyal audience. But for my tastes.....

Wonderful food in a city with a ton of it.

By IntlMysteryMan |

Yes you will wait a long time for a table, no call ahead and no reservations accepted. Yes you just tell a guy atbth front door how many in your party and he’ll find you later when your table is ready. No you will not be able to even have something like pretzels at the bar if you have a drink while waiting, drinks only. And no you can’t use a credit or debit card or anything other than cash for your meal. But yes you will have a very good meal with very good service and large portions at a fair price. And the owner and manager will come to your table without prompting to make sure everything is right. Do it.

Cash only 💰 pizza pot pie

By David P |

This is one of those must see places when you visit this city. I’ve never had a pizza pot pie before but was recommended this place a few years ago by a local and have been going back every summer since then. It’s a small restaurant on the ground floor of a house in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. It’s cash only. It has a small bar for people to wait for a table but very little room for people to wait in the foyer. Tip- make sure you don’t sit at the front booth during the busy hours as all the people waiting will basically be staring at your booth the entire time they are waiting for a table, creating a very uncomfortable environment to eat privately. The pizza pot pie is worth the 30 minute wait ( vegetarian option available also). I haven’t tried the famous Mediterranean bread but everyone seems to order it and love it. Make sure you come early as there can be a long wait, especially after Cubs games. Valet parking offered outside. Our waiter Ken was superb. Two thumbs up Ken!!! The homemade salad dressing is tasty.

Worst grinder I’ve ever had

By Tom K |

Ordered an Italian Combination and it was all bread. Very little meat. I cut off both edges of the bread until my knife was at the meat, ALMOST 2” ON EACH SIDE! WILL NEVER GO BACK AND WILL NEVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE!!

Go for the pizza pot pie, it's amazing!

By Bruce H |

We only decided to venture north from our hotel because my nephew raved about this place when he was here two weeks earlier. We had been warned to get there right when they opened (1600 hours) or the line would be out the door. We were extremely fortunate to have the lovely, very smart, and very knowledgeable Marisa as our wait person to give us the insight we needed to truly enjoy our evening. We split a chef's salad and as Marisa said, we could easily split that. The salad was freshly made as were the dressings. We went with the 1/2 pound pizza pot pie with the meat sauce and I can't believe we ate the whole thing! It was great! They have a nice wine list and not overly expensive. It is however CASH only which necessitated a quick trip to the ATM machine but still very worthwhile.

Use Valet Parking with Caution!

By WItraveller53090 |

This is a must-go place for us when we visit Chicago. We usually take the train from MKE, but decided to drive this time. I’m so glad I found a parking garage on Spot Hero and skipped Valet parking at the restaurant because another family had their car stolen by a fake valet! Not the restaurant’s fault but an eye opener for us, that’s for sure! Be sure to dine at Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder, just park your own car.

OMG a MUST visit when in beautiful downtown Chicago!

By matt f |

Back to Chicago for the first time in years and of course have to BEE LINE it for Chicago style pizza. I asked people on social media which one and this place was NOT one I was familiar with. We decided to check it out. The wait was estimated at 2.5 hours and it is a small place to begin with. The large group of folks waiting outside re-affirmed we made a good choice. We found a place at the bar and were seated a little over an hour later. Our server Kelli was fantastic and explained what we could order and how it was going to be served. PIZZA POT PIE...are you kidding me.....Kelli also said the Mediterrean Bread was a popular choice with me commenting "those things that look like cheese manhole covers on every table"! Also ordered the Fiesta salad with NO idea it would be the size of nearby Grant Park! I have to say it was one of the BEST meals I have had in a LONG time. The Pizza Pot Pie comes in half and one pound varieties (Meat/Veggie)….AMAZING...cut it with a bread knife...the bread... people in the group fought over....salad a FULL meal in itself and the best part....NOT expensive. The atmosphere and service are only topped by the incredible take on everyday foodie favorites....GET HERE!

Upside Down Pizza Pot Pie!

By njones660858 |

This pizza place is grounded in Chicago because it is one of a kind. I won't spoil describing the pizza baking process because the waiters have an EXCELLENT way of presenting the method at each table. Suffice to know that the whole experience is AMAZING. The pizza is FANTASTIC, rich and flavorful!

A visit with a friend

By Dianne H |

Went with a group of five. Fabulous hospitality and a very different type of pie. Wait was minimum and nice

A family visit

By tjbord |

I had not been here in many years but knew the tourists loved it. We showed up on Wednesday at 4pm. No wait and ready to eat. The Mediterranean bread was very good but next time wouldn’t waste the stomach room ion it. Then the “pizza” showed up and wow. It was a great experience but what sets this place apart is the sauce they use for the pizza. The pork sausage is so tasty and the you can tell the sauce simmers for hours and the complexity of flavors hits you subtly but wanting more oh so much more. Left feeling full and satisfied but definitely would go early!

pizza

By Joseph P |

A great pizza experience. The wait is usually a bit long, but once you get inside they staff is excellent. You will enjoy the pizza and the atmosphere, true Chicago place.

A true hidden gem just a short ride from downtown Chicago

By Ldybug16 |

FABULOUS menu and such a cute local restaurant. Make sure to make reservations weeks ahead of time to avoid long wait times. Bar makes great drinks and great price. Pizza and Garlic Dough was phenomenal! This will be a MUST visit now each time I’m in Chicago. I come a few times a year and this was my first visit here. Highly recommend to all. The sauce was amazing!

Not worth the hype

By Sean S |

This place has rave reviews. I would disagree with the hype. When the maitre'd tells you the wait will be 2 hours and it is over 4 hours, that's not a good start. Add to that the frustration of seeing incomplete groups be seated when your entire group is present and you know they have an antiquated and unfair seating system (they don't offer any reservation or call-back system for when your table is ready). After you are seated, your food can take up to 40 minutes to arrive. For such a simple menu, this seems unnecessarily long. If the food were spectacular perhaps the aggravating wait would be worth it, but I would classify this as a novelty food that doesn't have a ton of flavor or nuance. Not better than other deep dish pizza nearby. Lastly, because the wait is so long, many customers who have spent too much time at the bar are quite loud and obnoxious in the restaurant. The atmosphere can be quite loud and chaotic. Save yourself a ton of time and eat elsewhere.

Delicious but cash only restaurant/bar

By Claudia D |

I saw this place on lots of shows/videos so I had to try it once in Chicago. I am so glad that I did. The salad dressings are homemade and delicious. The pot pie pizza that I went for was also worth the wait. It’s a very small and quaint place with a bit of a wait. I was very impressed, however nowhere on their website or menu did I see it was a cash only bar/restaurant. They do have an ATM inside, however I feel a restaurant should make this very clear, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. That was disappointing only because we didn’t expect it as we never saw it online prior to going.

Young Kids agreed it was worth the 2-hour wait!

By kbfs |

A friend recommended this restaurant so despite being given a 2-hour wait time at 6:00p on a Sunday evening, we decided to sit it out. Went to the patisserie across the street and enjoyed dessert before dinner and then sat outside to wait. Other people here said that the host didn't take names, but ours did and called parties by name. Our wait was the full 2 hours and we settled into a table by the window. As the waiter said that the pizza takes about 30 minutes, we ordered as soon as possible and the food did take a full 30 minutes. However, when the pizzas arrived, the kids started gobbling them down and any grumpiness over the VERY LONG wait disappeared. We all agreed that it was worth the wait! I thought the prices were reasonable considering the amount of food we received and how good it was!

Loved it!

By Shannon G |

I can’t speak for the wait because my friends arrived first and waited so I walked right in and was seated. The Mediterranean bread as an appetizer was amazing! The dressing to dip it in were so good (I love a good dressing)! The 2 dressing mixed together were yummy! The pizza came and I was already full from the bread but finished my piece because it was so good! I usually don’t care for sauce but this sauce was so flavorful. I really enjoyed this pizza and will have to come back!

If your visiting Chicago I highly recommend this place

I would highly recommend this place. The food and service was amazing. I am not one who gets excited about food but the pizza pot pie was to die for.

Pot pie

I've been waiting to try the pizza pot pie since seeing it on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate Roadtrip" quite some time ago. Chef Marc Murphy's description was spot on. The melted cheese, the sauce, the mushrooms, the crust, everything comes together perfectly to make this unique dish worth waiting over 2 years to make it to Chicago for, and most certainly the 45 minute wait for a table. Go for it! You won't be disappointed. The service was also top notch!

A must try! So worth it.

Saw a viral video online for this place and had to try it. It did not disappoint. Lived up the the hype a million percent from the pizza bowl to the naan bread. The pizza bowl is like nothing I’ve ever had it’s pretty much an amazing (obviously house made) bolognese sauce in a bowl topped with cheese and the crust is on the outside of the bowl and they (think pot pie) and they bake it this way and then flip it over at the table omg so amazing. The naan bread is insanely delicious. As for the wait everyone talked about - we got there early and took a stroll around Lincoln Park zoo while we waited. We will be returning for sure. ***FYI*** They only accept cash.

Food good. Experience Bad

Wish I could say otherwise but this place is old news and just not worth your money. Uncomfortable booths. Dark lighting. So so food. Silverware wouldn’t even cut the pizza. Dull. Dull. Dull. In more ways than one........Would not go again. It needs a desperate update. Save your time.
