If you have a taste for soul food, this is the place to go. The food is your average soul food meal.

I went here with my sister and my children and we absolutely loved it! My kids was begging for seconds and this rarely happens! Love love love this place. I will definetly recommend this to anyone.

I was curious bout this place. Its a bit out of my area of visit but the #3 bus king drive takes you there. The waffles is fresh but a bit chewy. The chicken was delicious. I had two pieces..dark meat and it was WOW!! I would definitely come again.

I came across this restaurant while searching for places to eat downtown Chicago. The Bronzeville location came up and I found that they had other locations. Oak Park was closest to us and so we headed out there this past weekend. This place did NOT dissappoint! I have seen reviews of this location on other sites and while the food reviews were always excellent, there were often negative comments on the service and wait time. We must have been there at the right time - Saturday about 3PM. The place had a nice crowd, but not packed. We were seated immediately by a friendly hostess who greeted us as soon as we walked in. My husband LOVED it and said this is how it should be done. We both had The Saint - he with dark meat, and I with white meat. It was awesome! Waffles have a perfect texture and taste, and the chicken was perfectly fried. It was all delicious, and tasted very fresh. Our waitress, JAADE or JAADA, was great. Friendly, knowledgeable, just very nice - and checkout was quick and courteous as well. By the time we left, it appeared there was one group waiting to be seated. We will definitely be back!

I love love love the food here - soul food indeed. Got here around 11am for lunch and the place was near packed, by 12:30 there was a long line of people waiting to be seated, that alone says how great the food was. Prices range from about $6 - 15. The service was excellent! Great family setting, clean.

Well, we were so excited, and yeah, the potatoes were bland and under cooked, the chicken was fresh fried but with NO season, the eggs were over cooked and the service was nice but SLOOOOOW.

We visited on a Sunday night and they were very busy. While it did take some time to get our food, our waiter was very attentive and gave us frequent updates and kept our glasses of water filled. The fried chicken was amazing! We had the fried chicken with catfish, which came with three sides and corn bread. The greens were to die for and the rice and gravy reminded me so much of how my grandma used to make it. It was a true delight!

I've eaten here twice, and after the first time, I decided that I would eat here on every trip I take to Chicago. It's an good atmosphere (getting to the bathrooms is a little odd--while the bathrooms are fine, the space in the back isn't the best kept), and the service is fine (not exceptional, but fine). So far I've only had the breakfast, but it's enough for me to return! My only critique is that the menu is HUGE & the names are quite odd so I found it difficult to wade through all the menu items without fixating on random names or being distracted. Nonetheless, I think it's fair to say that there is something here for everyone, and it's delicious. I will eat here every time I'm in Chicago, and that's usually (at least) twice a year. I'm hoping to try the Evanston or Oak Park location on my next visit.

Some of the best chicken I've ever had! I have to order big to bring some home for my hubby! The sides are just as good. Staff are friendly and fast. I meet a friend for dinner here about once every three months...I never want to go anywhere else to eat and gossip! Booths are roomy, noise level low.

If you like/love SOUL food and Good music this is definitely the place to be. The food is off the chain good and tasty. The inside is urban and chic and clean. the decors lovely. This is all second to the food. You can not go wrong I believe and this was my 1st visit. I had fried catfish, greens, yams, Cajun red beans and rice and cornbread. My daughter had well cooked fried chicken, mac and cheese, greens, yams. there was no room for dessert(unless you are gonna sit for another 2 hours). The menu is huge, lots of choices with different names The dessert ranges from sweet potatoe pie to cobblers. The place is off the chain, with relaxing music and plenty of wait staff.

Maybe it's just that I'm not a fan of deep fried food, but the food was ok. My daughter enjoyed it more than I did. We had both chicken & fsh, which I was thankful to find. The decor is so so, service friendly, prices reasonable. We came at lunch & had no problem finding a table. It must be good though because a table of happy cops were next to us! & cops know the best food spots...

My family and I visited this restaurant after attending the auto show earlier this week. We were looking for somewhere different to go as we were not in the mood for the same old restaurants like Applebee's or Chili's. We discovered this place while driving around, and I am glad we stopped. I wish this site had the ability to give half stars, because Chicago's Home Of Chicken and Waffles deserves more than the three stars I have given it, however, I can't quite give it four stars for reasons to be mentioned later. The place is very nice and tastefully decorated. We were seated promptly, but then we waited......and waited.......and waited to be seen by our server. I thought they might have forgotten we were there. Once we were waited on, our server was friendly and courteous. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and made appropriate suggestions. I ordered the catfish with two waffles. My wife had chicken wings and waffles with a side of greens. My youngest daughter had a 1/4 dark chicken dinner with three sides, and my oldest had a 1/4 dark chicken with a waffle. All the meat was perfect. The chicken was seasoned well and my catfish was some of the best I ever had. My youngest stated her potato salad was better than homemade. Our only issue was our waffles. They were a little tough. I like my waffle fluffy and light, but these were chewy and needed the syrup and butter to make them easier to eat. I wouldn't say they were bad, but the waffles were not great. When the word waffles is in the title of your restaurant, I expect great waffles. I am hoping this was just a bad batch, because I would like to go back. P.S. We ordered a plate of fries to share, the French Fries. were some of the best I ever had. I would go back just for the fries. I recommend this place for great food, but be a little concerned about the waffles.

Service is EXCELLENT, from the host to the checkout process. Area- very nice if you haven't seen Bronzeville then you haven't seen the up and coming Southside of Chicago. Food- I had the chicken and waffle. Not impressed with either. Wings were small and the waffles tastes as if the were frozen and places in the microwave. Maybe I went on the wrong day. It's been better in the past.

Went in for breakfast during a conference, nicest staff I have met to date! Very cool and courteous. Breakfast was delicious, had the keb mo, all entries are named. Chicken is as good as my granny's. Don't miss this place and go hungry! I would go back when in town. Enjoy!

Army and Lou's restaurant on 75th Street has closed its doors. So where do we go for soul food on Chicago's South Side? Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles boasts that it offers the "best soul food in Illinois" and who am I to argue? Located at 3947 South Martin Luther King Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood, south of Pershing Road, not far from Guaranteed Rate Field, it produces soul food that includes big portions of fried chicken, waffles, fried catfish, banana pudding and peach cobbler in an exposed brick setting. Open from 8 to 9 Sunday through Thursday and 8 to 10 on Friday and Saturday, the restaurant traces its African-American recipes to the mid-1960s with its fried chicken, cornbread, candied yams, black-eyed peas, stewed greens, banana pudding and peach cobbler. It tastes as good as it sounds. My wife chose Tonya's Choice, the house's most popular item, a chicken breast and wing with potato salad. I opted for Betty Lou's special, a chicken breast, drumstick, wing and thigh, two waffles with strawberry topping and cornbread. Dessert was a no-brainer. We shared large portions of banana pudding and peach cobbler. You can't get enough of it. Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles also has a location at 543 Madison Street in west suburban Oak Park.

A very classy South Side restaurant featuring ethnic cooking reminiscent of the neighborhood! Being from 'Southern Illinois', this was out of our usual style, but we like chicken, and we like waffles, and this place did not disappoint! Chicken was great, not too spicy, waffles were like waffle house style, and the yams were sooo good! Service was great, and the kitchen was Jimmy Johns fast as well! Cool experience!

We came here to try the chicken and waffles. The food was good. The chicken was very nicely seasoned. The service left something to be desired. We had to remind the waitress to bring our drinks. Don't get the orange juice if you know what orange juice should taste like. It tasted like oj from a can. Make sure to check your bill at the end as well. They over charged us for a few items.

The food is simply the best home coordinator meal so far.Chicago chicken and waffle house have breakfast lunch and dinner.

My friends an family call me the food critic because I am so hard to please all weekend my friend was taking me to his favorite places to eat an I thought they were all horrible. He had one last chance before my flight an he brought me here. Everything about this place was amazing the food, atmosphere, music, service all amazing. I ate so much I could barely move an I am the type to waste food I will take one bite an be full. Not here I ate almost all my food am some of his too. Catfish Yes chicken Yes cajun red beans an rice all amazing Omg PECAN WAFFLE. WOW.WOW.WOW

I was 8 months pregnant and suddenly had a craving for chicken and waffles which I never had before. The chicken was well seasoned and crispy, and the waffles were moist. U get a a lot of food for a great price. This was the last meal I ate before I delivered!!!!

I have always heard of the place but this was my first time at the restaurant, I must say, I am not the one to order chicken when I go out to dine, or that I am a big chicken eater! But I do admit that the white meat chicken that I ordered, was very juicy and tasty, along with the catfish fillet! I figured that I would try both that way I could have something to choose from when I return back again!!!

The food was very good, with choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Southern Soul Food, Cajun Food, Waffles...great selection. The decor was trendy and afrocentric and the music was nice and soulful. I enjoyed the food, the different nationalities and convenient location for parking. I'll definitely eat there again when I'm in the city.

This place serve the most delicious chicken and waffles. The service is really good the atmosphere is nice. This restaurant really deserve to go out of Downtown to be in bronzeville

We were exploring the South Side during Open House Chicago and decided to stop here for a filling breakfast and this place certainly hit the spot! We did have to wait about 15 minutes - the line was long but moved fast. Of course we tried the chicken and waffles - I honestly didn't think I liked waffles until I tried these and was smitten! The chicken was super juicy too. We also got grits, turkey sausage and biscuits, and everything was mouth-watering. Don't be looking for anything healthy here - butter soaked and fried is how this place rolls, but that is what makes everything taste so good! We were the only non-African Americans in the place aside from our waiter but we felt welcome when we came in and full when we left.

The food was delicious and served hot. We had the fried catfish, the waffle sliders, the chicken wings, the collared greens, the macaroni and cheese, cornbread, the shrimp and grits, and the chicken and waffles. Everything was good. The collared greens can be a bit salty if you are watching your salt intake. The drinks taste like fountain drinks. Stick with water.

Even though the place is small, very confined movement, the food was actually pretty good, the staff could have been a little nicer

Looking for soul food? Great place in the heart of Bronzeville All I will say is fried chicken and Mac n Cheese. The dinner portion is just right with a nice choice of 3 sides. The main entree choices are catfish or the chicken (grilled or fried). My family chose the fried chicken and it was very satisfying -crisp and just the right flavor. Entrees are a great value my entree in addition to the delicious peach cobbler a la mode was under $20. Atmosphere is casual and urbanesque. Nice place for date night and families.

I've been wanting to go here for some time....finally found the time.....WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GOOD, BUT NEVER, EVER, IN OUR WILDEST DREAMS DID WE EVER IMAGINE IT COULD BE THIS GREAT!!!! My son and I like to try different restaurants, concepts, etc. - he has now claimed that Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles is now his new favorite and standard by which to judge other restaurants. Talk about down home comfort food - I truly don't think it can get any better than this! I had the Carol's Treat (1/4 dark fried chicken with gravy and onions and 2 waffles) and he had Mark's Big Boy (1/2 fried chicken, gravy and onions, and 2 waffles). The prices are very good - the portion sizes more than ample and TASTE......did I mention how good the food is? We shared cheesy grits, the cornbread and a biscuit. Very, very good. I have no clue how anyone can possibly eat dessert! We can't wait to go again....I forgot to mention the staff. Very helpful, cheerful and kind.

The place was packed, but we were greeted warmly and served delicious food! The staff was so friendly. We had a wonderful supper.

Outstanding staff and food that we enjoyed while on vacation. It was crowded with locals, so we knew it was a good choice! You'll have a hard time choosing between the chicken and waffles and the soul food menu. Will return whenever we're in Chicago.

The cuisine is absolutely French-Louisiana Style and the food is very delicious! This is my third time visiting this restaurant, so in advance I knew exactly what to expect ... a reasonable wait before being seated ... this is a hot spot. From the time we arrived until when we left, there was a line of customers waiting to be seated. That being said, it means the food is well worth the wait!!! Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal ... Smothered Chicken w/Waffles, Chicken Dinner, Chicken/Fish Combo, Waffles w/Turkey Sausage. 3 of 5 had some left-over to carry home. The price is right! The service is tight! We will return again! Well worth the wait!

Had a bit of wait but it was worth it. The chicken was crispy and very well flavored. The waffle was delicious and went wonderfully with the chicken. I had never had the combination before. The greens and sweet potatoes were delicious as well. The macaroni and cheese was my least favorite as was the cornbread. Loved the music selections that were played as well. Some old school and jazz. When in the area on MLK drive, will definitely stop in again.

Small quaint little spot. Great food, the wait was a little long. But it was worth it. I will return when I amin the city again.

Who would have thought , Chicken and Waffles together? Golden brown and juicy chicken with golden brown waffles and warm syrup . Simply delicious.

Great service Friendly people Fabulous customer service Great food Family friendly Fast services The decor is something that you never seen before. It's a good different.

It all began with a craving for fried green tomatoes that led instead to a trip to Chicago Home of Chicken and Waffles. First, I attempted to call for take-out and pressed option #1--four minutes and 28 seconds rolled by with no response. I was hungry and in the area so I decided to dine in. There were lots of options and I had an appetite that could've eaten the menu but opted for a Soul Food combo special: 1/4 lb. smothered chicken dark with a catfish fillet, and Collard greens (no meat), mac & cheese, and potato salad were my side dishes. The meal was tasty, flavorful and not salty (which I appreciated). The catfish was really good and piping hot. I was disappointed, however, in the varying food temperatures and the overall presentation of my meal that included a fried waffle that I expected to have sprinkled powdered sugar, pecans topped with vanilla ice cream (along with my optional choice of chocolate syrup drizzled on top) as the menu described. My dessert was a far cry from what I received, which was not cool. The interior noise level was high but there were also two separately announced birthday celebrations and the staff sang a soulful birthday song to the guests of honor. Overall, I would say that I enjoyed my first-time experience in Bronzeville and would probably return again.

I'm a Southern Bell, therefore I can always go for some good soul food. The food was served amply and seasoned well. I wish peach cobble would have been on the menu for Sunday but it wasn't :(. However, I wasn't disappointed and will definitely go back again.

The food here is tasty and the servers are attentive to your requests. There are a variety of items to choose from the menu including breakfast which is served throughout the day.

You can smell the collards when you walk through the door. Most folks in our party of 10 ordered either chicken or fried catfish fish with greens, Mac n cheese, yams or red beans and rice. These dinners came with 3 sides and cornbread. I ordered the 3 chicken wings with full sized waffle. They serve the old fashion waffle not Belgian waffles. The chicken wings were very small. But everything was very delicious. Better than the Michigan Ave restaurant we went to the previous night. The restaurant was small but they moved the guests in and out in an efficient yet leisurely fashion. I wasn't expecting much but I was really happy that it turned out as good as it was. We were met there by a Chicago local who highly recommended it. There was a line so it was obviously a local spot.

i love fried chicken and waffles! I've had some of the best in Harlem and LA and now in Chicago. My take on Chicago's Home is the chicken is very good - crispy on the outside and still very moist on the inside. The waffle was also very good. Overall, I was very impressed and plan to come back! Service was outstanding with lots of smiles and blessings!

I little overpriced but Good food! They don't serve liquor...but the food is good. big variety to choose from

Best fried chicken I've had my entire life. REAL chicken and waffles. It was a Saturday afternoon so we had a 40 minute wait but it was completely worth it! Very affordable and the price to quantity / quality is superb. The restaurant is not a 5 star restaurant but I guarantee the experience you get will amount to one. Worth the trip, worth the wait. Definitely going back here when I'm back in town again!

It had been a while since we had been to the Home of Chicken and Waffles. I purchased a groupon and decided to give them a second chance and I have to say that they did not disappoint us at all. We went for breakfast and the food was very flavorful. I had chicken and waffles and my hubby had the Catfish(which was very very good). The service was decent but nothing special. The decor is so lovely and artsy that you feel like your eating at an upscale restaurant. I heard that they have live jazz on saturday evening, so we will definitely have to check that out as well as there dinner food.

We had a pleasant experience at the restaurant. There were some downfalls on the service side, cause it was very slow, and we waited 50 minutes till the server realized that she messed up our order, and it didn’t reach the kitchen. And in the meantime, no refill of coffee or other interactions. Against that the food was quite good. I liked the greens the most, as they were heavily and good seasoned. The Chicken was perfectly fried, just the waffle could have had some more flavor - it fell flat against the other dishes. Also the cornbread was extremely dry, some little moisture would soften it up and be more pleasant to eat, then just picking up dry crumbs. If the service and minor food issues are fixed, the restaurant is definitely up for a five star rating.

This is more a breakfast place than dinner. I was a bit disappointed since I went for dinner. The entrees are mostly breakfast combos. I had to order extra sides with my chicken and waffles. Overall, the food was bland. The chicken had a thin coating - I like a more crunchy coating. Also, I would prefer chicken tenders. Also, the Cajun red beans and rice was not as spicy as I was expecting. However, my partner liked his meal. He had eggs and potatoes with his chicken and waffles. The waffles were okay. Lastly, the service was non existent. We only saw the waitress when she took our order. I used a Groupon so I did get a good value.

A great choice for a visiting tourist and Yelp elite. We were seated promptly. The coffee was tasty, the chicken was fried and seasoned well. Waffle had a hint of cinnamon like I liked..wait staff was funny And very helpful. Meciala was great and friendly. Would definitely go back and refer friends

Visited for lunch on weekday. Hardly any customers. Even so, service was slow. Food was very salty, nothing special. Cheese grits merely had pieces of cheese added at last minute. Desert tasted store bought. Waitress did not clear table of dirty dishes. Chicken was not as good as Popeye's, and alot more expensive.

This is real southern cooking. The portions were generous, the taste was great, and the prices can't be beat. Though they didn't have traditional "southern sweet tea", the raspberry tea I had was the best I've had anywhere. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Chicago.

I took my college age kids to this restaurant in the summer of 2012 and I couldn't wait to return. The food and service were excellent, I really enjoy this place. Only one draw back is the size of the place, hopefully they can expand in the future.

OMG my mouth is still watering from this place. It was So SO good. I had the catfish, waffle, wings, and mac and cheese. It was very good! You must try this place. It was a bit pricey but it was well worth it. I am guessing everything on the menu is good. When I get back to Chicago I know I will be coming back to this place again. A bit of a wait but well worth it. Try it!

Regular diner. Very nice staff. I like to order the Rosemary on lazy Sundays. It's very busy on the weekends, especially Sundays. During the week it's not bad. Just walk in and they will seat you quickly. Summertime has a patio. If you have a dog, you can dine with your dog on the patio.

Went to the Chicago area to celebrate my sister's birthday and a friend recommended this place. Talk about great food! I had the Chicken and Pecan Waffles and for some reason added a side of mac and cheese. The chicken was seasoned and batter to perfection and the pecans in the waffle were fresh pecans. Others at the table had Catfish, greens, mac and cheese and even potato salad. You can't eat everyone's potato salad, but you can eat theirs! Don't miss this place

Visited this venue for a late breakfast, early lunch with my mother and brother. I have never particularly cared for waffles and not that big on fried chicken, unless it's Harold's, but that's for another review. <smile> So I opted for a piece of catfish with collard green, mac and cheese and yams. The collard greens and catfish were delish! The mac and cheese and yams were highly average. I grew up on Chicago's Southside with Gladys, and nothing sense then compares. I went to College in Atlanta and have spent most of my adult life in Atlanta, so needless to say I know good soul food when I taste it. And I've been told I am an excellent 'southern' cook. On the other hand, my mother did have a waffle and chicken, that she described as 'good.' And my brother had an omelette that he described as 'fantastic.' So there you have it. Overall dining experience was pretty good. Our server was slow but very pleasant and personable. Price was moderate and food was above average. When in Chicago again, I will definitely return for a bowl of collards!

My second trip to CHOCAW, my companion's third visit. Parking is easy outside, on the street. It's swamped on Sundays. Staff is friendly and efficient. Quiet jazz music in the background, dark wood, you'll feel underdressed in sweats or shorts. Lots of folks in Sunday best! Food is very good: got one fried chicken and waffles combo, and another bigger combo that came with fried chicken, fried catfish, and a choice of three sides: mac and cheese, collard greens, and red beans with rice. Big portions. Total was $48 including tip and some Cokes. We'll be back, again and again.

I was in the neighborhood with some coworkers, it was lunchtime, and I am glad they said okay because this place is awesome!! It was a Thursday about 1:00 PM and there was no line and a couple tables open. Five or ten minutes later and the line was almost out the door. I had the Bren & Carl's Favorite which is a starch side and a chicken leg OR a chicken thigh (I read it and thought it was AND) they asked which i wanted and i decided to add a piece of fried catfish. I also upgraded my waffle to a pecan waffle and got a side of collard greens. This was a lot for lunch but i usually get lunch at 11:30 so i was hungry and i finished all but a bite of waffle. The collard greens where great and had a bunch of porky ham hockness floating around. the waffle could have been a little more crisp; personally i will try to remember to ask for that next time. The chicken was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The catfish was crisp outside, tender inside, and tasty. Service was great and the decor is very nice I cant wait to come back again

I have wanted to eat at this restaurant for a while, so I was excited when I had the opportunity to eat there with my daughter. It was a Monday night, so it wasn't too crowded, but there were a good number of people there. The decor could use updating, but the restaurant was really clean. We were seated right away. Our server Sean was top notch and very attentive. I ordered the Chicken Dinner Dark with red beans and rice, collard greens, and candied yams as my sides. The portions were hearty. The chicken was fresh and hot and it wasn't too salty and had a nice flavor. The red beans and rice were tasty, spiced just right. The collards were very good. It's not easy to make collards, but these were good. The yams were a little sweet for my taste, but I still liked them. It also came with corn bread, which was light and fluffy. My daughter ordered the June Bears, which is an omelette with peppers and turkey sausages and home fries. The portion was huge. She wasn't able to eat all of it. In fact, she had some the next day for breakfast and wasn't able to finish all of the home fries. She also ordered a biscuit, which was good. I am looking forward to returning there and trying the waffles. I encourage everyone to try it out.

Visited here with family of 5 based on other reviews. Seated quickly. Fast, friendly service. Chicken and waffles were a favorite. Something about the waffles...thin, but so tasty...some ingredient I could not identify that gave it a unique, delightful flavor. Catfish dinner filets were a little dry (added hot sauce), but every side was amazing...yams, rice and beans, Mac n cheese. Reasonable prices. Great taste if Chicago.

I was very disappointed that this place was not good. I order chicken & waffles and the chicken was terrible. First bad sign was that the food came out real fast. The cooks or the waiter put four pieces of cold chicken on my plate. I said in my mind, "This cant be serious?" The waffle was good but the chicken was cold and terrible. I notice the expression of other people around me that the chicken did not taste great. This place took the soul out of soul food. It was my first time visiting Chicago and left a real bad taste in my mouth. Save your money and go eat somewhere else.

Don't judge a book by it's cover...open the book and indulge. I did have chicken and soul food which was delicious. Everything on my plate was the business. I don't normally eat red beans and rice, but cleaned my plate here. You won't be disappointed!

First off, hands down one of the best places I've eaten....ever. my brother and I stopped here while in Chicago and everything was beyond delicious. Appetizer: The buffalo catfish was perfectly cooked with a homemade breading and sauce that was the perfect balance of hot, tasty and flavorful. Main entree: Smothered Chicken and waffles. The chicken was juicy, the gravy added good flavor and a hit of salt which was balanced by the homemade waffle. Dessert: Sweet Potato Pie. Amazing! Nothing else to say. Drink: This will sounds crazy but try the raspberry iced tea, not too sweet and full of flavor. This place is very much mom and pop at a great price. The atmosphere is very inviting and the staff is very friendly. If you are in the city, I highly recommend checking it out, it's worth the drive.

As simple as it may seem to flour and fry chicken, it can be done poorly. This is not the case here! There was a twenty minute wait for seating and another twenty minutes for our order. But once you get the food, you forget all about that. Juicy, moist, hot and fresh chicken at its finest. A must repeat!

I felt as though my grandmother was in the kitchen cooking. All soul food spots are NOT what they claim they are. But this place was right on and worth EVERY penny. Wings, catfish, greens, REAL yams.......DELICIOUS!!!! Mac and cheese could've used a bit more work but so can mine 😘

I was told to try this place the next time I visited the city. EXCELLENT! The food was beyond delicious, our server was nice, and the prices were reasonable. This restaurant is a well-known gem to locals and those in the know; the line was out the door shortly after we were seated. Now we're in the know, too! I didn't do the traditional chicken & waffles... They have a host of soul food options. I did have a chance to try the waffles though: really tasty! I'm super picky about catfish and this place nailed it. Really, the food tastes like a lot of love. Be prepared to wait; it's worth it!

This place is GREAT! The chicken is some of the best I've ever had. I always get the Tanya's Choice (3 wings and a waffle). I've also had their fish, and soul food but always come back to the chicken and waffles. This place is small, I wish they would buy more space to add more tables/booths. There will definately be a wait unless you get their when they open up. I also don't like that there is a "wait line" down the entrance ramp and the people in line really can't do anything but watch the people seated eat, very odd but the food makes it worth it

This place is a little pricey but its really worth the price. The food is really awesome, the place is a family setting, the workers make u feel really welcome.Love this place.......

We came here to get some soul food. I ordered fried chicken thighs, greens, and a waffle. It was fresh and flavorful. We were greeted promptly and our server was delightful. The only thing is that it took a little while longer to get the check when I was ready to go.

Loved everything about this place. You get plenty of food for the money. The chicken is perfect and the waffles have a savory vanilla thing going on that I LOVED!!! We will be back!!

Went here on a whim with my 80 something year old friend as we were driving home from the conservatory looking for a place for lunch. We ventured in and were so glad that we did. We shared a side of macaroni and cheese (probably the best I've had at a restaurant), and I ordered the chicken wings with a waffle. The waffle was fresh and tasty. The wings were meaty and not at all greasy. I went again with my husband and another couple before a concert, and they all enjoyed the food, too. This time I had catfish, with sides of collards, mac & cheese and beans/rice. The best catfish we've ever had. We will be back for sure.

My husband has been wanting me to try Chicken & Waffles since he when to a Roscoe's in California last year so we Googled it on our trip and this place came up and sounded perfect and we are so glad we went! First off I'll say we were the only non African Americans in the place and it was packed and we did not feel uncomfortable and were treated respectfully so much love Chicago! We were seated right away, we both loved the chicken and waffles and will be stopping by next time we're in town!

Three of us went here for lunch for a birthday on a Saturday. We were seated pretty quickly but we were lucky because by the time we left there was a wait. The menu is vast and has something for everyone, even my vegetarian husband who got the cheesy veggie omelet, potatoes and grits (he was hungry hungry). His meal was very good and the portions were more than generous. I got chicken and waffles with a side of greens, all of it was delicious but holy moly those greens were awesome. I love greens and have tried them all over and these may be the best I have had. They were so good that I even spooned the liquid like soup and considered licking the bowl but restrained myself. The waffles were very good and the syrup was just amazing, I'm not sure what makes it so good but wowsa it's tasty. Chicken equally as good, fried to perfection. They use real delicious tasty butter in everything and you can tell, it makes the food delicious. The service was a tad on the slow side but we weren't in a hurry but plan on spending a little time here if you eat in.

The chicken and waffles here may not be the most photogenic but the taste certainly makes up for it! Servers are so friendly here and everyone is neighborly and welcoming. I had Tonya's Choice- three wings smothered in gravy and a waffle. I also got some orange juice; the drink servings are huge! This place is comfort food at its finest.

The food EXCELLENT! Served HOT and FRESH! We ALL left FULL AS A TICK due to the portion sizes. It was priced pretty decently for all that you get and is one of our favorite stops when visiting Chicago! If you like soul food, this is a must stop when in Chicago.

Bronzeville is definitely a hidden gem in the Chicagoland area. The ballpark, White Sox, is nearby along with tons of non-chain eateries and places like the Absolutely Anything Essential Gift Shop. This restaurant has a parking lot right across the street along with street parking. It's best to go early before the afternoon and evening rush. In chatting w Rhonda, whose very professional and friendly, I learned they have lines out the door very often. She was helpful in my selection, she recommended a dish that included the side I would have got separately. So I saved a few bucks there. She was so kind and friendly, she gave me a small sample of their soul food plate. The food is hearty and wasn't over seasoned and the portions with my breakfast were nice. I definitely want to go back from brunch or dinner and enjoy my food right out the kitchen. I did a takeout order and had to get home and warm things up. The entire staff was friendly, they have a nice variety of dishes and the restaurant has a home like feeling.

We visited this restaurant on a Monday before the lunch crowd. The service was a tad slow but the food was worth the wait. Most of our group order the traditional chicken and waffles. The rest of us ordered catfish and eggs. The food was fresh and truly Southern comfort food. The decor is average, the food is kinda pricey but I like supporting neighborhood restaurants so I'll visit again.

A couple friends and I had breakfast here. I had the chicken and waffle, which was very good. The food came quickly, and the service is also very good. The coffee was superb (if you like coffee), and the restaurant was not too loud. This is a really nice restaurant in the Bronzeville area.

Been here several times and the helpings are large enough to feed an army, put meat on your bones, yet im greedy I'll keep mine to myself! #Authentic #chicago #soulfood

Since Army & Lou's closed on 79th Street several years ago, my wife and I have sought a destination for traditional soul food in Chicago, like the kind we experienced while traveling along the Great River Road in Louisiana. Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles checks all the right boxes. Located at 3947 South King Drive, between Oakwood and Grand Boulevard, south of Pershing Road, it boasts of "the best soul food in Illinois" and we won't dispute the claim. What'll you have? Chicken and waffles or fried chicken or fried catfish or red beans and rice? Open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, it smacks of Cajun cuisine from St. Francisville to Baton Rouge to New Orleans. My wife had a fried chicken breast with a waffle topped with blueberry. With a side of bacon and cornbread. I had two grilled chicken breasts, a leg, wing and thigh with two waffles topped with apple. With a side of chicken sausage and a biscuit. For dessert, we shared portions of peach cobbler and banana pudding. Army and Lou's, revisited.

The staff at the funeral home suggested this restaurant for dinner, and we were not disappointed. The food came out nice and hot and was packed with plenty of flavor. Whenever we are back in town, we plan to stop here again!

When food is ordered and brought out five minutes later, like fried chicken you know it's been sitting there for a while. This shouldn't be the case for a dinner time restaurant. We really wanted it to be better.

My family and I visited after worship service on a Sunday. Although the food is tantalizing, that was not the best idea. We waited over an hour and the system of giving your ‘party’ is not efficient. Once seated, the food came out fast and fresh. Oh, did I enjoy it!

I went here with the family for breakfast. Turns out they call dinner breakfast here! Fried chicken and fish, rice with gravy, cornbread, okra, bacon and eggs and waffles and GREENS?...for breakfast? Okay then! Lets do it! I left full as ever and completely satisfied. Its expensive but the quality of the meal justifies the price. When I arrived there were two tables seated. When I left the place was full. I suggest showing up early. My dad has apparently been coming here for years. I guess I will start coming now too! Not so humbly submitted, Michael C.

A native Chicagoan suggested that my colleagues and I have lunch here. We were from all over the country. Everyone enjoyed it! Great job!

On Labor Day, my husband and I decided to eat at Chicago Chicken and Waffles before heading back to NW Indiana. I have eaten at this establishment 4 times, but this was my husband’s first time. It wasn’t crowded due to the holiday and the service was prompt. I ordered the fried catfish with Mac & cheese, yams, and Cajun red beans & rice. My husband ordered the 3 pieces of chicken and waffles. All the food was delicious. The plated portions were filling, and reasonably priced. My husband loved his food and I know we will be back again.

Service was the worse! Manager was very incompetent, food stayed on unoccupied tables with flies on them for the duration of our stay! Bathrooms was disgusting and water was used to replace the soap dispensers! No paper towels and a fowl odor seeped through the hallsWe try to support our people but this is a prime example of why that’s not always a good idea! I pray they get it together soon!! I won’t be back no time to soon!

Everything was great about our visit to Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles. The server was outstanding. She had a great personality and was very attentive. We each had the waffles and three chicken wings. I forgot what it was called on the menu, but it was so good. The serving was so big that I could not finish my plate. The chicken was fried perfectly. The waffle was awesome. That syrup was better than other syrups that I tried. The bill for two of us was under $40.00 with tip. The service was great, and food was excellent. The price was reasonable. I will definitely go back.

I purchased a $45 Groupon and thought that I could use it one visit. My mother and I went on a Friday evening and we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The food was very good. We ordered the catfish fillets with chicken wings and the side dishes were collard greens, macaroni and cheese, yams, potato salad. The food was seasoned well and was hot. Our waitress had to too many tables so we didn't get the attention that we would have liked for someone spending money. When checking out I was told the Groupons had to be used on separate visits, so I could only use one to pay for our meal. We went back for breakfast to use the remaining Groupon and breakfast was good. I had the salmon, eggs, and rice. The waitresses need more training in customer service and that is something the restaurant should focus on.

Just recently went for brunch with my cousin brother and her fiancée. I did not order any waffles but instead opted for the chicken and catfish dinner with a side of greens, red beans and rice, and Mac n cheese. The Chicken was great and the greens were flavorful, the Mac n cheese could have used a little more cheese and the red beans were decent. Our server was very polite and always available when are cups needed to be filled and he checked on us often. I gave it three stars instead of four because the side dishes could have been better and the cornbread was too dense. Overall I enjoyed the experience and I would go back again.

First visit but you are greeted as you enter and seated at table (they also have booths).Wide menu variety not just waffles and chicken. I had grilled catfish fillets which was great. They had grilled peppers and onions on them. The sides was mac & cheese, yams, red beans & rice with corn bread. I was stuffed when I finished. My wife tried the wings lemon pepper and spicy barbq (which was spicy) and potatoe salad on the side which was $5 alone. My advice be careful when ordering look for meals with sides. But, I will go back, nice and cozy there.

I learned of this place about 2 years ago, when I started looking for a chicken and waffle spot in every city I visited to appease my Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle craving when I can't be in LA. From the first time I visited this hot spot in Chicago until approx. 20 visits later, I am never disappointed. The chicken is always seasoned to perfection and the waffles are most times almost perfect. The mac and cheese is a must have every time I go. I have also tried the greens, smothered potatoes and gravy, fish, and fries, and they are all tasty. I usually drive to Chicago once every other month and always come here. I have made addicts out of my friends, ex-boyfriends, family, and their friends, as I have brought them here and they always want to come back. Although it is a small place and you will usually encounter a wait when you arrive, it is worth it and I have never waited longer than 30 minutes. Tips: Make sure you find the hostess as soon as you walk in so she can write your name on the waiting list. They will usually be on the side of the rail of the ramp. They try to catch everyone when they walk in but they may miss you and if someone else walks in after you and puts their name down, you will have missed a seat.

I've been here several times. The food is always good and the grilled catfish is the best. It's a small place so go early later in the day the wait could be long.

My mom and I went for breakfast on a Thursday morning, there were only a few people and service was quick. We both had the fried chicken wings, scrambled eggs, cheese grits and a biscuit. The grits and eggs were very bland they had no flavor, the chicken and biscuit were both well seasoned. The waitress was friendly and attentive, overall the experience was just ok, without tip our total came to $34

The prices couldn't be beat and the food was excellent!!! The wait was a little long, and the entrance was in an awkward location. But the wait was worth it. The value of the price and the food was especially tasty.

If you are looking for great home cooked and comforting food, this is the place to go. The fried fish, greens and yams are to die for! I'm used to good food and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste. I would definitely come back. I enjoyed the soulful atmosphere of the art, the named menu selections, the music and of course the people. The service was a little slow, but the main hostess was very bubbly and helpful! I will definitely refer this place to others looking for a home cooked meal.

Interesting place. Famous for the chicken and waffles is the claim. That they lived up to. Staff is much on point.

After a terrible dining experience on Navy Pier the day before, I decided that my Memphis cousins might want a little soul food so we headed to Chicago's Chicken and Waffles for breakfast before their flight home. All of the food was delicious. We ordered fried chicken (of course). The waffles were big and fluffy! The eggs were delicious and I was happy to see chicken sausage on the menu and it was GOOD! All of our meals were bountiful and it seemed that my group of ladies were thoroughly satisfied with this experience. The restaurant is a little dark but the food definitely was the highlight of the show. I could not finish my plate and nor could a couple of the ladies. The prices are reasonable unlike the amount I dished out for the half-baked, "mediocre to the tenth degree" meal we had the previous day. If you want to explore the city a bit, I highly recommend you heading a little south to this little gem. You'll see more diversity than you will if you stick to the touristy sites, downtown and to the North. You could also make a day of it, if you wanted to head to the Museum of Science and Industry or take a stroll around the University of Chicago. When they return, I'm going to take them to both Hyde Park and Bronzeville to explore! We had a wonderful, albeit short, adventure. Two Thumbs Up!

It is unfortunate that I have to write this review but it is necessary! It use to be one of my favorite places to eat for breakfast but I will not return. It took 30 minutes to be seated and it took 40 minutes to receive the food...really. We finally asked what was taking so long, they stated "are fryers went down and we apologize". I thought, why would you not inform your guest, why would I have to ask? But ok! Upon receiving the food, it was terrible. The macaroni and cheese had no flavor and little cheese, the wings were so small, the greens lack flavor as well. I finally asked what was going on with this restaurant because I had never been here before and the food tasted so bad. The waitress did address the small wings and said, they did not get their regular shipment of chicken in so they gave us 2 wings instead of 1 because they were so small. I said what about the other issues?? No need because it was a waste of my time to wait for this disgusting food and unfortunate service.

Big shout out to NATOYA. You provided awesome service to our large party of 10. I read lots of comments about slow service and meals and those folks must be crazy. We were promptly sat and that is not always easy for such a large group. The food was brought forth expeditiously and all meals were Delicious. Thanks for a great meal and experience

If you are on the near southside of Chicago and looking for a meal that will stick to your ribs, this place is a must visit. Prepare for at least a 15 minute wait, no matter what time of day, but as others have written, it is well worth it. Went there with my stepmother for brunch on a Sunday after church. She had the fried chicken, grits and eggs. While fried food does predominate the menu, they will grill the catfish, which I had along with eggs, grits and a waffle. The portions are large and the food is great. And, I loved the coffee. An added bonus is that you get to see a nice slice of the good people of the Southside of Chicago. I grew up here but left many years ago so this part was much appreciated.

We ordered smothered chicken with grits, gizzards, and catfish. They were all delicious but it was better a year ago but still no disappoint, worth a visit in Chicago

A bit of a wait because they're very busy but worth it! Nicely seasoned chicken, fried without a lot of greasiness. Waffles are savory. $$$
This Place Just Can't Be Beat - a Must Try
Just had my first visit to this flavor explosion of a restaurant. I had the chicken livers & gizzards (fried) and they were AMAZING -- as was the side greens (loaded with plenty of pork). I'm already planning my next visit so I can try the fried catfish with sides of cheese grits and greens. I'll also be ordering some livers & gizzards to go (they're just THAT GOOD). My pal swears by the chicken and waffles plate. The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly and efficient and the place was just all around pleasant and efficient. I'll be back here often...hope to see you there!
