Great food, adequate atmosphere

By Rebecca F |

Great, interesting food, but I'd stick to the tacos. Service was fast, albeit abrupt and difficult to understand at moments.

Authentic Yucatan-Mexican Food in an Interesting Cultural Center.

By JWBGrapevine |

Visited with a large group prior to the Rams game. Chicken Itza is in a ethnic food court with 4 or 5 restaurants that share a common eating area with a few shops. Based on the line - Chichen Itza appears to be the most popular. We sampled the Tikin Xic Grilled fish on rice with their signature sauce, tacos Poc Chuc (pork), and tacos Pollo Asado. All dishes were superb and portions big enough to split unless you have a big appetite. Great habanero sauce that is not crazy hot. Order at the counter and they find your table, no alcohol service.

Delicious lunch at Chichen Itza

By Nelson K |

I am almost embarrassed to say that I've been attending Rams and USC games for a number of years, parking right by this LA gem, and not even knowing it existed until a couple of weeks ago. After visiting the Yucatan peninsula a few years ago, and wistfully thinking I would not get to eat that food again for a long time, I was so happy to discover Chichen Itza. I had the cochinita pibil tacos. The meat was so tender and moist. I really look forward to trying other dishes before future football games, and also to try the sister restaurant Holbox. The jamaica drink was exquisite as well.

Amazing Yucatecan Food

By Tommy087 |

Chichen Itza is a stand inside the Mercado la Paloma food hall in south Los Angeles. They specialize in Yucatecan Food. WOW was it good. I had the “Poc Chuc” tacos—thin slices of pork shoulder marinated with sour orange juice, cooked over mesquite charcoal, served over a soft taco. It was spectacular. The crispy pork tacos were also delicious. Highly recommended.

Delicious!!

By xelha92 |

With a wide selection of food, pictures to tantalize your last buds, its difficult to select which to choose. But that is the fun part here at the restaurant, because once you tried a dish, you want more the next time.

Wow!

By gr8puck |

Wow is how I felt after dining here Saturday evening. This is some of the best, most flavorful food I have ever eaten in Los Angeles. The restaurant is located in a local Mercado, sharing space with other local eateries. Yes, one might call it a food court; I prefer to call it a dining experience. No frills here. Tile covered tables, one orders and pays at the counter and the ordered food is delivered by the wait staff. We tried the Skil-Pac, roasted tomato, pumpkin seeds, and chive dip served with some very fresh chips. Our main course was the Tikin-Xic, basa fish filets marinated in some lime juice and delicious achiote. This was served atop rice. The citrus jicama salad served along side was very refreshing. For drinks we tried the chaya and guanabana aqua frescas. Both were delicious and refreshing. This is not your typical Mexican food place, more in the Yucatan flavor family style of preparation. However, you will not be disappointed the food is king here. Nothing smothered in red sauce and cheese. Instead be prepared for some very fresh and delicious flavor combinations. Parking is easy in a pay gated lot, there is a charge, but there is plenty of street parking.

Yucatecan tasty!

By JPF2000 |

I've been here many times over several years (usually after a visit to nearby Exposition Park, Natural History Museum, Science Center, etc.), and Chichen Itza never disappoints. The cochinita pibil and pollo pibil are the menu's marquee items, but the pollo asado is some of the best I've had, and I've had lots of pollo asado. The tamales are reliably tasty, too, and the ensalada de jicama y naranja is refreshing, with bright flavors. The only dish that isn't reliable is the cafe maya: sometimes well-flavored, at other times little more than regular coffee with the merest hint of cinnamon. That's a pretty minor failing, though -- Chichen Itza is a worth a visit to Mercado la Paloma on its own merits, and if you're in the area (or at the mercado) for something else, stopping off at Chichen Itza is a must.

Excellent Lunch!

By Ian D |

I know that this place gets rave reviews all the time. But I must say that the Tikin-Xic (fish in achiote sauce) was excellent! Fortunately, the recipe was reproduced in the LA Weekly, so I’m going to try to make it at home. That won’t stop me from ordering it again when I next visit.

GREAT MAIN COURSE, DRINKS COULD BE BETTER

By Tony S |

I have now been here twice and have had the Tortas De Cochinta Pibil y Pollo Asado. Both were excellent. No complaints at all. However if you want the complete experience, walk over to the Oxanican booth and get their jugos there. The second time there I had Jugo de Pepino which was outstanding.

highly rated authentic Mexican place offers good no frills food.

By Ramon A |

Food - The horchata was quality, I'll order it again. The fish tacos were crispy and good, the cochinita pibil tacos and poc chuc tacos were really good, the chicken tacos were good. The sweet plantains were really good. Vaporcito and tamales were good. Service - This is a quick service counter order restaurant, not a sit down table service place. The cashier and the back server were good. Location - Located by USC on the other side of the highway and across the street from the DMV. This location has a small lot and is located in the back of the Mercado de palma.

Delicious!!!

By Rachelle W |

This place serves extremely delicious Mexican and Mayan food! Highly recommend the chicken plate let it be pollo asodo or pollo pibil! I loved my plate of pollo pibil so much! It is a big plate and will definitely fill one up! Chicken plate costs $12, and seafood plate goes up to $18. But the food was so good, and it was so worth it! Business hour is M-F till 9pm. Come and try the amazing food!!! PS: special family meal (for 6) for the day of the deaths! $30 preorder and pick up any day between Nov 1st and 3rd!

My favorite Yucatan food done well

By Zootarts |

I love Conchanita Pobil almost more than life itself. And it is done very well here. Sure- you can line up at Chapotle when visiting the museums in exposition park and have second rate Mexican food. Or you can take an adventure and walk the 4 blocks to this great little restaurant plaza area filled with charming spots just off the beaten path. If you come try my fave pig product. You won't regret it. It's not the best CP I've had, but it is very, very good!

The best Cochinita Pibil

By DestinationLAX |

Pros: Excellent food from the Yucatan. The cochinita pibil is one of the best dishes I have ever had. Plenty of parking. Casual dining. Cons: It's a little away from anything but worth the drive.

Excellent Tikin Xic

By EDK_11 |

Went here after Natural History Museum. Food was excellent. Big plus it was in a wonderful plaza with many different foods to choose from. Also bought a Thai shrimp salad and Thai iced tea at Thai food place in same center. Will go back again. My 18 month old loved food as well.

Will come again

Great food, served quickly but is not fast food. Loved tacos, just like the ones you would get in Mexico

Private tour with "Go Mexico".

By Heidi P |

We booked a private tour with our trusted agent, "Roque" also known to Americans as Rocky. His "office" is the private beach of Condominios Bella Mar located in the hotel zone at KM 4, next to the Occidental. He's. A little Mayan guy whom I have had the pleasure of knowing and booking tours through for years. We asked him about a private tour to Chichen Itza. We were quoted a price of $80 each which included lunch, Chichen it's a and swimming in a nearby Cenote. He made 1 phone call and were booked for the next morning.we anticipated a car since there were only four of us. Instead we had a 15 passenger van with a driver and an amazing guide named Jorge. Not only did the guide speak excellent English, he was incredibly knowledgeable of Mexico, the heritage, the Myan culture and anything else we inquired about. He took us through traditional Mayan villages to explain and show us how the Mayans live. We stopped for a traditional Mayan buffet lunch that was totally amazing. Before lunch we were blessed by a Mayan shaman who gave us each a reading and blessing. He was truly gifted and was spot on with each of our personalities. After lunch we went on to Chichen itza to visit the ruins. We were handed off to a Mayan guide who grew up just a few miles from the ruins and had incredible knowledge and personal accounts of the place. After that we went onto a nearby Cenote for a much needed swim in a mineral rich Cenote. The Cenote was surrounded by high cliffs, gorgeous jungle plants and a waterfall.

If you want to experience

If you want to experience an authentic taste of Yucatán cuisine come to Chichén Itzá Everything is delicious and fresh.

Yummy yum yum

By Roddy P |

We had a whole mixed lot of food - soup, plantains, chicken and pork mains, beans, and some others I can remember what they were called. The service was friendly and quick to the table - you order at the counter. Judging from all the people there on a Sunday night the food is popular and authentic. We had a great meal for two for $40. The food was delicious and very interesting and I would really recommend it - there are some fun shops to wonder into if you get there during the day.

Pretty good

By 1000j |

I think it is a bit overrated but it is pretty good, just tad expensive for the food you get, like that soup which was what $4?

A Hidden Jewel in South L.A.

By SledMan |

Located very near USC and the Coliseum, this is an awesome little find tucked away on Grand Ave, across the 110 from S.C. This is food in the style from Southern Mexico (Yucatan). If you go on a Sunday, enjoy some tacos made with roasted baby pic. The meat is tender, tasty, juicy, and served with some crackly, crispy skin from the piglet. We tried the first item on the breakfast menu: eggs with their house made sausage, black beans and rice. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is attentive and helpful. The Mercado is part food court, part gift shop/tiendita, part community center, part classroom. Try the other restaurants in the building, enjoy REAL Mexican food, support the local community, and escape from fast foods! Parking is free and plentiful. The neighborhood looks a little intimidating, but its OK, really!

A Great Hidden Treasure

By Darryl H |

Chichen Itza is a great little hole in the wall restaurant, just a stones throw away for USC. Very authentic Mexican food, with a Yucatecán twist. This is Not your typical LA Taco and Burrito Stand. Most LA natives have never had Mexican food, from this part of Mexico. Tucked away in a seldom traveled part of LA; the work to find this place is more than worth it. Enjoy!

One of the best Mexican Restaurants in LA

By Felix A |

I live in LA; and I have eaten lots of Mexican food, some good and some so so. But the food at Chichen Itza brought my palate to a better place. This is Mexican food from the southern Caribbean coast of Mexico. The cochinita pibil, a pork dish, was delish. Chef Gilberto told me that he retired from engineering in Mexico to follow his passion for cooking. His dishes show his passion!

Must visit in la

By rajesh_the_traveller |

Great food , just can't wait to go back Menu options are great The service is prompt, the entire menu was yummy. Fair price and good menu selection

A Perfect Spot for Yucatan Mexico Food

By camrenettra |

Last month my sister invited me to her favorite restaurant in Los Angeles called Chichen Itza. I must say that everything was absolutely scrumptious and the flavors were unbelievable! We started with the Loganiza Asada sausages as our appetizer which are made on-site. They had the perfect amount of spiciness to them. Then we both ordered their signature dish which is the Whole Grilled Branzino fish grilled over mesquite fire and is served with rice and beans, avocado slices, pico de gallo, pickled onions, and corn tortillas. If you visit this restaurant, you must try this dish with a little of their signature habanero hot sauce. The combination of all the different flavors is so unique and absolutely perfect. When I visit this restaurant again, I plan to sample their Pollo Pibil which appears to be a tasty dish as well. I also ordered some Jamaica which wasn't as flavorful as I expected; nonetheless I enjoyed my food immensely and will definitely visit this restaurant again whenever I'm in the Los Angeles area.

good food in a food hall

By sblibra86 |

Great authentic yucatan food in a wonderful diverse food hall in dt LA. We ordered the panuchos and a tamale and they were fabulous. Hot authentic food. busy on a sunday!

See Chichen Itza on ASY TV's GO THERE EAT THAT

By Brandon B |

Gilberto is awesome! The Fundido (sp?) is awesome! The flatbread taco was awesome! The habanero sauce was awesome! The tamale was awesome! My entire experience filming her was... you guessed it... AWESOME! Glad my friend Brandy recommended it, I do the same to you!!

Delicious food, but slow service and strange ambiance

By marc c |

Located in a food court near USC, this is the busiest of the food kiosks. The line to order is very slow, because there was only 1 person taking the orders/ringing up the bill, while delivering drinks to the tables as well. there is also only 1 server. The spices and presentation were very good.

There are Choices here, choose Chichen Itza!

By TravelSpidey |

Do not judge a book by it's cover and don't eat in chain restaurants. After a big day on a college visit to USC my son and some friends of his decided to get some dinner. A short walk from the campus brought us over to Mercado La Paloma a place of shops and restaurants. I ordered the Tacos De Pescado (fish tacos) and to drink I had the Horchata a delicious sweet drink made of many fresh ingredients including rice. The tacos were fresh and deep fried to perfection. If my son ends up at USC, I'll end up at Chichen Itza!

Delicious!

By Daniela B |

This place is great! The food is amazing! They have the best fish tacos in town! Very inexpensive too! Today's special was mesquite grilled shrimp. It was delicious!

Truly a Gem!

By Joy S |

Food is some of the best I have ever tasted.....made with heart and soul. This family run restaurant is located in a mercado-community center near USC. Even if you are near downtown you should venture over! the food is scrumpcious! incredibly well balanced-packed with elegant flavors-vibrant colors. Try the pollo asado--and any side dish....they are all wonderful prepared simmered with just the right blend of flavor. They are located inside a community center that is surrounded with other food stands---they are always busy but the ambience doesn't match the quality of the food. Great prices as well!!! All the agua frescas are beautiful and not too sweet! Could be the best Mexican (stand-type) restaurant in the city.

Located inside the Mercado la Paloma building

By Flounder M |

Bit tricky to locate, walked into the parking lot then through the side glass doors. Similar to an indoor food court, you will see Chichen Itza straight ahead. It is a walk up counter spot with tables and chairs for food patrons. The food is made fresh here and takes up to 20 minutes for you to get your order. But it is well worth the wait. If you are not in a hurry, eat in. I ordered the Jamaica drink plus Poc Chuc – pork shoulder in tomato sauce (this was the star) with black bean puree and slaw Dulce Papaya for dessert – was not too sweet :) All the food is made with love here! Kudos to the owner, Gilberto Cetina, and his staff! I would be honored to return here so I may experience more of his wonderful food!

Great Food, Family Owned.

By elizabethlascheid |

Chichen Itza has the best Yucatecan food you will have in Los Angeles. They make their own corn tortillas and they are so good. You can order to go, have it delivered, pick up or if you are lucky they have a little outdoor patio for you to sit. I love the smell so much I always try to stay if there is room. Their tamale (tamal) colado is wrapped in banana leaves and then steamed until moist. Inside is tasty chicken and the sauce is great and not at all hot. Parking is easy and the service is great. This is a family owned business. Go there.

Hidden Gem!

Fabulous food for low prices. Be blown away in regards to what you think Mexican food is and enjoy the region of La Yucatan!

Something New

By Luislo619 |

I had a little help from the internet on finding a good place to eat. This place had great reviews so we decided to try. We found it cool that this place was located in a little food court/indoor market place. We tried some of the best tacos we have ever tasted. The kids and I really liked their Lechon Tacos. They were very tender, moist and flavorful. I'm usually the one to add salsa or lime to my tacos but not this time. They also have a few other dishes that were all delicious. Unfortunately they were all out of Tamales, the main reason we went there. My guess is they are better than the tacos if they sold out lol. I highly recommend this place at any time.

As Seen on TV

By Amy M |

This place was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. It is located in an open market with other places to eat. You order at the counter and wait at a table while your dish is prepared. The food was good. I happened to pick a fish dish with anchiote sauce. Unbeknownst to me it contained gluten to which I have a sensitivity. Anyway, besides having the unpleasant side-effect occur to me, the fish was kind of bland. I took care of the blandness with the house hot sauce. My daughter ordered a Torta which she loved.

Amazing Regional Mexican - best restaurant near USC!

By EndlessVoyage |

This was suggested by local friends and was truly amazing. Set in a food mall with quiet dining and plenty of parking. The food was equal to any expensive regional Mexican . Beautiful tacos, Salads ( loved the Jicama Salad) cerviche, kibe & tremendous habenero sauce. Families dining and clearly a community spot. Love it👍🏼!!

A hidden gem for Yucatecan-style Cuisine

By Michael U |

Hidden in plain sight at Mercado La Paloma in South Los Angeles and known for Yucatecan-style Cuisine it was on Black Friday that lunch was sought at Chichen Itza Restaurant, the counter-style service and communal seating reminiscent of what is commonly offered in Mexico while the Food itself also delivers a high degree of authenticity. Focused on a region most experienced diners know but may not be entirely familiar with, Pork marinated in Orange perhaps most famous but the use of Turkey and Achiote less appreciated, it was after lengthy perusal of an overhead menu that decisions were made, each of seven plates to follow beautifully executed and full of bold flavors without being so hot as to dissuade more timid palates. Mistakenly ordering Horchata to compliment the meal, a mother’s acquiescence to her child yielding two large cups of chalky mix, it was setting this aside and people-watching a diverse crowd that ten minutes passed prior to Food arriving, first bites of Black Beans and Rice showing a generous use of Herbs that continued with earnest across Tacos featuring handmade Tortillas wrapped around charred Chicken and smoky Tomato Sauce plus another pair loaded with crispy Pork Skin. Moving next to more regional preparations, the tender Turkey atop fried Tortillas sandwiching pureed Black Beans a multi-textured marvel with bold flavors to match, it was in follow-up that a baked Tamale proved even more interesting, a crunchy outer-layer quickly giving way to sweet Masa around Chicken and soft Eggs given earthiness by Epazote. Finishing the Tamale by dipping it in vibrant Red Sauce without a lot of spice, a big plate of Cochinita Pibil for just $12.99 saved for last proving exquisitely supple without much fat, it was on request that two Desserts arrived last, the sopping wet expectedly not everyone’s cup of tea but wnderful for those who love Pudding while Flan built on Cheese from Oaxaca was springy and well-imbued with Vanilla that played well off caramelized Sugar Syrup.

Delicious casual lunch

By Chch_Mel |

We really enjoyed our lunch from Chichen Itza. It is in a Mercado type food court, so you order at the counter and sit in a communal hall to eat. The food is authentic, fresh, tasty, and very reasonably priced. It is nice and close to the California Science Centre too, which is handy if you are looking for a cheap and cheerful lunch after a morning there.

great surprise

By betamax12345 |

Was brought to Chicken Itza by a colleague in between meetings. Initially started as a long walk, but eventually got to the mercado. There were a number of choices, but Itza looked like it was good because there was a line. True enough, I tried their fish dish and it was quite enjoyable. Not too spicy, just the right grilling. The jicama salad was also delicious when paired with fruit. Would go back again.

The cure for the common lunch! YUM

By Gringacriolla |

Gilberto Cetina and his son Gilberto Cetina Jr. run this amazing stand in the Mercado La Paloma where they will introduce you to the cuisine of the Yucatan Peninsula and their creative riffs on this food. Their signature dish is Cochinita Pibil (a substantial bowl of delicious pork in pibil sauce) - they also offer it with chicken (as Pollo Pibil). Other unique staples include Panuchos, Kibis, and their unique amazing and spicy potato salad and also spicy citrus jicama salad. They have Asado etc. and you can get any meat they make as a taco or a sandwich. Tips: - Try the daily special as it's always amazing. I usually only get there on Mondays: (Frejol con puerco is fabulous, bowl of black bean soup and dish of pork with a salsa and avocado - it's a big meal and I often take half home for the next day) or Fridays: Tikin Xic (delicious unique fish plate) or Fish Tacos (these are my favorite thing to eat there and I sometime order when it's not on special) - Avoid the lines by avoiding the lunch rush - i.e. get there early or late. After 1pm is recommended because then Gilberto is more likely to have time to talk with you and give you advice on what to eat if you are new to this food. - The hot sauce is HOT - and delicious. Taste a tiny bit before you put it on your food - Don't take picky eaters who only like plain food. These dishes are rich and subtle and made with flavors that are not your ordinary 'american' or standard 'mexican' flavors (but note that you can eat here while your companions order from the taco stand next door) - If you want to hold a lunch meeting for a larger group you can rent the meeting room and they will serve you there- they will arrange if for you. It's very inexpensive and my team finds it to be a real treat.

Just Like Yucatan!

By Foodie Fam Trips |

I've had it literally at Yucatan, and this is a true Cochinita Pibil. On Point. Flavor, sauces, beans and rice cooked perfectly. Jamaica tasted good and the service has nothing to ask for... Really reccomend this place. Only tried 1 dish but I have no doubt everything else must be delicious too.

Authentic Cuisine from the Yucatan

By AdventurTravlr |

This restaurant is located just a few blocks east of the University of Southern California campus and the Los Angeles Coliseum, in Mercado La Paloma, an upscale food hall that has several different restaurants offering various cuisines from around the world. Chichen Itza offers authentic food from the Yucatan region of Southern Mexico. The Cochinita Pibil is the best I've had outside of my travels in the Yucatan region. This is a favorite low key place for my daughter and I. She is a chef and has a very discerning palate. She highly recommends this place for a new kind of comfort food, even if you didn't grow up eating food from the Yucatan.

great find near USC and natural history museum

By TravelwKids4 |

This was one of the best meals out we've had in months - Chichen Itza is in a food court with a few other eateries for whom customers look to be mostly locals. Great fish, pork, I felt like steak. though in hindsight that was probably silly, it was Super yummy citrusy, with onions, rice plantains, tortilla, a few fried potatoes, black beans. We'll look to make sure to come hear next time we're in LA.

good food, casual atmosphere

By w2conrad |

We love going to this place. The food is consistently good and it's a comfortable place to eat. I had fish tacos and agua chaya (made from fruit, green and not too sweet). Fish tacos had good cole slaw and pico de gallo. All great for a Sunday lunch. Not fancy, lots of USC students and families.

Wow - this was good

By RedSoxJPC |

Staying near USC and found this place on Tripadvisor. It is located inside a warehouse that has been converted into a Mexican market place atmosphere. Everything was delicious ... the plantains were perfect ... the corn tortillas were fresh and soft and warm ... the chicken asada was amazing. I wanted to try everything on the menu. You place your order at the counter (with a very friendly wait staff) and they give you a number and bring your food to your table.

Disappointing get the sauce and go elsewhere

By Joseph A |

Went here on a Saturday morning with my daughter. Too early for a crowd so that was good. Went for a tamale since I heard they are a specialty. I got the one with "finely" ground masa in a banana leaf. That was mush and filling/sauce was mediocre. Ordered tacos too and you get two small tacos. Chicken was very tender and pleasantly flavored but I had a chunk of gristle about the size of a teaspoon AND a chunk of bone (leg?) as thick as your pinky over two inches long. How do you miss that during serving? My daughter's tacos were ok but nothing special. The habanero sauce is good, not a lot of vinegar, but that's not enough to lure me back. Especially as the prices aren't particularly cheap.

Good Yucatan Dishes

By 2fromTX |

This restaurant is in a market style building with several other food vendors, including a Thai, Ethiopian, and burger place, along with a few small retail shops. We had to park on the street a couple of blocks away. Tables are throughout the market and when you order they give you a number and find you to bring your food. This place had the most activity during lunch the day that we ate there. They have the popular Yucatecan items such as cochinita pibil, poc chuc, etc. I had the cochinita pibil plate, which came with black beans and rice and was excellent and filling. My friend had two tacos and said it was a good light lunch. Thumbs up, recommended!

Incredible food in an upmarket Food Hall

By EndlessVoyage |

This is a must if you are in central LA. Granted it isn’t schmancy nor is there table service but the food is inventive and very good. Prices are cheap because of locale but not taco truck cheap. Ingredients are far nicer and tastes far more layered. We loved it!

Yucatán dining in downtown LA

By Alan661 |

Wonderful Yucatán dining in a spacious pavilion. My wife and I split everything. The Tostada de Ceviche $6.99 was loaded fresh fish. The Pibil marinated pork with pickled onions served with tortillas, rice and black beans $12.99 was wonderful and the Tacos De Pescado (order Of 2) for $6.99 was enjoyable. For desert we had the Platano Con Crema $3.99 that were perfect.

great authentic yucantan style mexican food

By grmagno |

My husband and I met up with some friends that lived locally. It was all our first time eating here. We all agreed that the food was delicious. I had the Pollo Pibil and my husband had the torta de Chochinita Pibil. We both enjoyed our dishes. Our friend raved about the ceviche that he had. The customer service was great and the food is cheap.

Mayan ccoking in L.A.

By Rene V |

Located just a few blocks east of USC parking is in a free (with purchase) secured parking lot. Located in a former industrial building it is next to Oaxacan, Thai, and Ethiopian eating locales. You walk up and order your food which is then delivered to your table. We wanted to try the four types of tamales unique to that area of Mexico. Wrapped in banana leaves they are totally different from the corn husked varieties. We had all four with soft drinks for about $22. They were all yummy. Truly a culinary experience! The place was very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.

Great, Unique Mexican Restaurant

By C_n_H_Pure |

Chichen Itza might be the best Yucatan Mexican restaurant in LA. No border food here, this is Caribbean Mexican food, closer to Cuban food than what you'd get in Sonora or Mexico City. Black beans are a staple, the Cochinita Pibil is amazing with a citric bite. Many of the dishes use a black bean puree also healthy doses of plantains, orange juice, achiote and spices of the Caribbean. Some of the most unique Tamals in Los Angeles too, including a baked tamale. It is an easy spot to get to from Downtown for lunch and from USC on game days.

Not Your Everyday Mexican Food!

By Reenactress |

Four of us went for lunch after going to the nearby California Science Center. We thought we'd try it as this part of LA is a food wasteland, and this restaurant was on the cover of Sunset Magazine in June 2012. This is Yucatan style food, marinated in citrus juices and is very flavorful. We had the panuchos, which are a kind of open face taco with turkey meat, lightly pickled onions, a chunk of avocado and standard toppings. The corn tortilla is pan fried and it's been slit open to smear the inside with black bean paste. We also had two of the pork dishes, one the daily special, the other the pork on banana leaves. Both came with a wonderful sauce that exploded in your mouth with spices, but not chile hot! Rice and black beans came with all. Our only surprise is that this is not exactly a sit down restaurant; you order at the window and go find a table in the mall area and they bring you your food. The building is a mall with several restaurants, including a Thai one, inside, and some shops. It's designed to also function as a community center. It's tucked in right up against the Harbor Freeway, near the DMV building. Parking is free and the exterior is pleasant with lots of mature trees and shrubs. The building itself is sort of apricot color. It was well airconditioned and there was live music. Perfect handicap access. Did not use or see the restrooms.

Best food ever!!!

Quick walk from USC campus for wonderful lunch. Delicious authentic food in market setting. Great for lunch but would not walk under viaduct at night

Panuchos' Heaven

By CADK |

When I'm in L.A., I try very hard to wrap my razor sharp teeth into tasty panuchos. They look like a tostada, in that the toppings lay on a fried flat tortilla. The difference is that the flat tortilla is filled with black bean puree. It's freshly made, warm and crispy, topped with shredded turkey, lettuce and pickled red onions and avocado. This visit the turkey was a bit dry, gave me the sads. But usually it's perfecto! I also had the ensalda de jicama and naranja. For those of you not in the know, it's an orange and jicama salad. It has a citrus spicing dressing. Not too spicy. There's habanero salsa on the table for added spank! Lastly the green drink. Not sure of the name (Agua de Chaya, maybe.), but it's only a whopping 80 calories for a big glass! Feels so healthy with this mostly healthy lunch. The place is cute. Kind of Hispanic market/warehouse type of a place. There's a little store that sells things you'd find in Tijuana, and a seamstress. If you get a chance to stop, do so. Delish!

Super good

By Mariam |

Is one of the best places in downtown la! I love the Pancho, and the tortas. The people how works there are super friendly and they are really helpful explaining the food!!!

Best I've ever had!

By Joe T |

Even after visiting Chichen Itza in Mexico, this is the best food that I've had from that area. Even though it gives the impression of a fast food place, it isn't and the food is so good, that we went back the next day for more!

Very unique food court near USC, full of exotic options, much like the food carts of Portland.

Chichén Itza was recommended by my hotel. What a excellent choice. The food is Yucatan Pennisula style. Everything is made by the staff, down to the corn tortillas. I had the Panuchos for appetizer, two corn tortillas topped with mashed black beans and turkey, garnished with pickled onions, tomato and avocado. For a main course the house speciality; Cochinita Pibil, a banana leaf topped with braised pork in an artichoke marinade. Both were delicious, and the plates were a sight to see. If your in South Central LA near the USC campus, be sure to stop here for lunch or dinner.

Chichen Itza a Yucatan experience

Chichen Itza is part of the Mercado La Paloma complex which is designed to offer restaurants common space without having to operate in a specific location. The restaurant is full of favorites from the Yucatan region of Mexico. Everything is fresh. Service is great and the homemade tortillas make the trip special. We had the Cochinita Pibil which was outstanding. The sauce, the marinade, the toppings and the freshness are like enjoying gourmet food on a budget. Also, we had the tried and true Salbutes (like an open faced taco) which is served on a fresh tortilla. The food is always fresh and the Mercado is a destination worth checking out if you want something in the heart of the city but that serves legit ethnic food. Most of all you will be pleased at not spending a fortune.

Flavorful Mexican Food

Chichén Itzá is located in a food court with several other dining options. So it’s food court style dining, order up front, find a table, food is brought out to you. Convenient location for us. We were visiting the California Science Center, so it was a short walk for us from there. The food was good, if not a little expensive. We had the cochinita pibil, the pollo pibil, and two orders of tacos. Our total was $43. We all decided on water at that point. But like I said, the food was flavorful and just different enough to be interesting. My cochinita pibil had a large hunk of fatty tissue in it, which was a little disappointing. The tacos were very good. I think this place is good - but I didn’t leave feeling like I would try and get back here anytime soon. For the price, I would rather be somewhere in a nicer setting, such as a stand alone restaurant with table service.

Very nice experience

My husband just HAD to try this place after seeing it featured on TV. I love to try new things so I was happy to oblige! Just a few things to note- the place is situated in a plaza with other places, kind of like a food court. You go to the register to order and they will bring the food. I was a little disappointed for a minute because I didn't see the show and was expecting more formal dining- with wine- but that was my own fault for not checking it out first. So if you know this you will not be disappointed. They food was very delicious, we literally ordered almost one of everything just to try it since we are not familiar with the food. I remember that I loved the fish tacos most. We had several pork dishes that were also very good. We certainly left full and very satisfied! Very friendly/ helpful service as well and you can take a bottle of their hot sauce home with you, too!
