Yummy! Simple and Delicious

By SFBzoo |

Was at OMSI and a couple of people recommend the food pod and specifically Chicken and Guns. We took the streetcar and finished with a walk. Great evening to enjoy the various food vendors but this was our favorite. Had the chicken wings which came with sauces (nice) but not necessary. Moist and packed full of flavor. Also had the 1/4 chicken with the potatoes. Had to watch my basket, the family ordered salad and wanted my potatoes. Nice seating area. The folks at the food stand were nice and very helpful in explaining the difference in their two standard sauces. Wanted to go back!

Outstanding food❤️❤️❤️

We have been to this place multiple times and the quality has always been great. The seasoning of the chicken is yummy, the potatoes to die for and salad is also very crisp and fresh. They use local seasonal products. This is a must go place every time we go to Portland!!!!

Yum!

This was the best food truck from all we sampled. I got the quarter chicken with guns (potatoes). The chicken was juicy and both sauces, chimichurri and ahi were delicious. The guns were perfectly fried and seasoned. I’d go back!

Best chicken in Portland?

By Robert V |

Wanted to visit a food truck so asked a local. Recommended Chicken and Guns. Highly recommended. Roast Chicken in a Chimchurri sauce. was amazing. Get the salad vs. potatoes, it's a good combo with the chicken and is fresh and amazing. There is a covered seating area at the 12th/Hawethorne truck court, so rain isn't a problem. Beer/Wine is available from potato truck vendor.

Delicious food cart dining experience in SE Portland

By care_traveler |

Chicken + Guns was our 2nd food cart dining experience in SE Portland during our recent visit there. We sat at the cart's distressed wood bar. We each ordered a 1/4 roasted chicken with potatoes which is an adequate portion that did not leave us feeling hungry. I ordered the white meat chicken. The chicken itself was moist, flavorful and delicious. The hand cut potatoes were deep fried and drizzled with salt and lemon. Our portions were dressed with pickled purple onions, fresh cilantro and "aji" sauce which, I understand, has a cilantro base. I would describe this food cart meal as memorable as I keep thinking about it and how good it was.

Great chicken

Visited this place with some friends yesterday, their chicken and chicken wings are just from heaven. I would definitely come here again next time I am in Portland, also don’t forget to order their potatoes.

Still thinking about the chicken

By TravelFoodGuy |

Ate dinner here on a recommendation and was glad to have listened. The entire meal was delicious (roasted chicken with both potatoes and salad) but it's really the aji sauce on the potatoes that sticks with you. The location is part of the Cartopia food cart pod, so other dining options, and there are fire pits and picnic tables for larger groups.

Great Peruvian chicken

By Caron M |

This food cart was a great find. The portions could easily be split between two people. Ordered the chicken and potatoes. The salt and lemon on the chicken was perfect, and loved the aji sauce. Lots of seating and port-a-potties in the area. Parking not so great, we ended up parking on a neighborhood street.

Yummm!

Hmmmm! Hello chicken!!! And fireplace!! I had dinner down the street last night but decided to come check this place out anyway! So glad I did! It's in the food truck area with plenty of outdoor settings. Well it was freezing last night but still. Fireplace was a nice touch. What's good? The bird!! It's all about the bird! You can get a quarter, half, whole and it few different ways! Original, lite and so on. I got the original!!! The bird was cooked to perfection! The green sauce was spicy and garlicky! And those crispy crunch little potatoes! Hmmmmm! I usually don't care for potatoes or eat them but this was rather delicious. Sat and chowed some down next to a firepit in the freezing cold. It was delishhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Hmmmm. And the chicken was quite tender and juicy! Wish it wasn't freezing cold! And wish I didn't have dinner before this. But overall, I enjoyed it very much. I also spent as much as I did for two dishes at a restaurant down the block but this was so much better and worthwhile. Next time, I'm getting the sauce on the side though. Or try the lite version. Hmmm hmmm gooood!

Best Peruvian Chicken & Crispy Potatoes you'll ever have OR want

By Cynthia L |

I love Peruvian and I've had Peruvian chicken Many times, but this was on a whole nother Level. The chicken was crispy-skinned on the outside and tender and moist on the inside - all well marinated....no dry chicken?! That practically unheard of. The potatoes - Oh man. I have never had such beautifully small bites of crispy potatoes like these in my life before and these were TO DIE FOR. Dip them in their (green) sauce and you've got heaven in little itty bitty bites! Sit outside, enjoy other vendors there, enjoy a drink, warm yourself by the fire, and just kick back because this place was amazing!

Top Notch Food Truck.

My wife and I walked from downtown Portland to eat at Chicken & Guns based on a recommendation from a local and we were thankful we did. First we visited the Commons brewery, sampled a flight of their beers and walked a few short blocks to Chicken & Guns. Based on advice we went early to avoid lines and each ordered a 1/4 chicken & the potato accompaniment, "Guns." A fantastic combination which both finished despite the considerable portion size. We both were thankful for the recommendation and considered the walk over and back well worth the effort. If we lived locally we without a doubt would be regular customers. We'd walked up to the 5000 block of Division and back toward the city on Hawthorne based on another recommendation which proved fruitless in our opinion. If you're staying anywhere in the downtown area and are up for a walk Chicken & Guns is not far from the bridge on Hawthorne and definitely worth the effort. Paired with the Commons works very well.

Excellent Chicken and Potatoes

By Milestogo007 |

After reading reviews on Chicken and Guns I had to drive out and give it a shot. I ordered a whole bird to go with "guns" which are potatoes with sea salt with aji sauce for both the potatoes and the chicken. I have to say the chicken is very good. Only Pollo Norte makes better and it only wins by a nose. The potatoes have sea salt and some pickled onions mixed in with them. They are delicious with the Aji sauce and the chicken is delicious with the Aji sauce. The cart is located at Cartopia over on SE Hawthorne. It is difficult to find a place to park. It is a very busy area of town. My first time visiting Cartopia and it is like walking back in time to Woodstock. I have never seen so many hippies in one place, but this Cartopia has them coming out of the woodwork. Kind of fascinating. I wish I could take this girl I nicknamed Bunny here wearing one of those provocative leather fringe outfits and I could say, "She doesn't talk much, but she has a crazy body!"I had an incredible urge to say "Peace, baby!" and "Hey Man!" but I am an introvert so I just kept quiet and walked back to the car with the to go order. I didn't fit in anyway, I was dressed like the Xerox repairman. I highly recommend ordering food from Chicken and Guns. The food is good and the atmosphere is entertaining.

The Best Chicken and potatoes of my life

By Kevin |

Small cart pod, Cartopia, EZ parking. Lots of tables, tables have fire pit in the center of them, and in Portland Oregon you need them about 70% of the time. The owner has taken my order every time I've been there, and he is down to earth funny and a bit quirky. The barbecue over the oakwood gives the chicken a flavor that's unbelievable, and the spices he uses compliment the barbecuing. The guns / potatoes his version of french fries are cubed and brown crispy and unbelievably delicious. They come with pickled onion and it's a great compliment to the dish. The two sauces are what really keep me coming back to this establishment. The aji is Peruvian and contains several ingredients that just blend perfectly. The chimichurri sauce, of Argentine origin is absolutely mixed to perfection and brings out the flavor of both the chicken and the potatoes in a great way I always order one extra of each as well as one extra of the pickled vegetables. I'd like to have some fancy explanation of why I like this restaurant so much but the bottom line is the flavors just burst my taste buds so much so that if I have a meal there on Tuesday I'll take the extras home for Wednesday and by Friday I want to have it again and to me that's the biggest compliment you can give a food source What surprises me is very few portlanders have tried this food truck I asked them all the time and I'd say nine out of 10 people have never tried it, and I tease them and tell them they're crazy and that the tourists haven't beat by a long shot and when they go and try it they'll pick up the phone call me and thank me cuz they too will have found one of the best meals and all of Portland and that's a mighty tall order

Great chicken... no guns.

By James A |

Really enjoyed the chicken at this place and didn't see any guns. The options are limited but focused on quality and like everything at Cartopia the price is modest for such high value. Enjoy!

Very yummy

By lovefoodinCM |

Yummy sauce with the chicken and the potatoes were quite tasty too. I would eat this again. In fact, just thinking about it, is making me crave some. Well, next time I am in Portland....

Great chicken!

By Iowayankee20 |

This restaurant is located outside in a food truck area, with lots of other food options if someone isn't into chicken and potatoes. It's busy so service is a little slow, but it's totally worth the wait! The chicken was very moist and tender and the potatoes/"guns" are very crunchy. I ordered the 1/4th chicken and guns, there were plenty of guns so I probably could've shared a 1/2 chicken with someone and shared the guns.

So much food!!

By Kent R |

Just read some of the other reviews here to find out the recipes are Peruvian in nature. The Aji sauce is amazing! The 1/2 chicken (enough food for two people) is tender and flavorful. Ugly place, great food...just what you'd want in one of the best food trucks in Portland!

Not like it used to be

By eJo |

Mostly hard potato skins that rip apart the mouth's gums, like upper and lower. For $9, you can't get enough chicken, mostly two spoons full, so order the $16 and sit outside at a picnic table in the cold and eat with a plastic fork out of a paper box, so for 2 with drinks and tips, $50.

Very good chicken but not cheap

By InsideScooper |

Chicken and Guns is one of six or seven food trucks in a nicely developed food-truck court. The other trucks include crepes, pizza, sandwiches, Egyptian, and Mexican. There is plenty of seating on picnic benches, some of which are covered by a canvas roof which also has sides that can be lowered if the weather is not so good. All in all, a pleasant and typically Portland funky outdoor experience. Oh, there are also two fire pits with picnic tables next to them. The chicken was quite good, and I had mine with a small tasty side salad, although you can get potatoes instead. I thought the prices were a little steep though. A quarter chicken was $9 and a half chicken was $16.

The best

By tiredandtravelled |

Salad I ever ate. I do not even know what was on it. But I started with the salad and couldn't move onto the chicken until it was all gone. The chicken was good, smokey and juicy with just the perfect amount of spices. It was also tender, not quite ready to fall apart but almost melt in your mouth. The wait decent, there were five of us and tick tock we all got our food. 24 dollars for a whole chicken with 4 servings of potatoes or salads.

Fantastic chicken and food cart experience in Portland

By Donnie M |

I stumbled across this place looking for roasted chicken in Portland and it is now my favorite, not only for the chicken, but for also taking in the whole food cart experience. I would say this place is iconic Portland -- and perfect to enjoy on a warm evening. It's a busling, hip scene with an energetic and come-as-you-are Portland vibe, along with a slight mix of tourists. Lots of picnic style tables, music playing, along with other tasty food and drink carts if chicken is not your thing. I would definitely recommend a visit without hesitation. And it won't be an expensive evening out, as well.

Lunch. Oh Ya!

By Eiualumni |

Little did I expect that this wagon would serve some of the best chicken I've ever had. With all the choices for lunch.....make this #1 on your list.

Worth the long walk!

By etittley |

It was a rather long walk from my hotel, but definitely worth it. 'Chicken and frites' is somewhat universal, but this was definitely a tasty variation on the theme. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for something different but cheap and filling.

Big flavor on chicken

By Naoko G |

I LOVED the chicken wings! I had potatoes elsewhere for breakfast so I’m impartial for the “guns” (potatoes) but definitely recommend the chicken. It was little spicy but spicy enough that you’ll want more. If you’re coming here by car, it’ll take some patience to park.

Simple food is sooo hard to get right.

By Kyle L |

Good roast chicken is one of those foods; simple, but hard to nail. They do it here. Just go with the original and the sauce is awesome. If you're looking for a server with a smile and that'll make or break your meal, go home because you're not there for the food anyways. Had to cut back, was going way to much to appreciate it.

Delicious!

By Jackie V |

This is always our very first stop in Portland, every time we drive down from Canada. The chicken is delicious, the “guns” are yummy and crispy. If you’re a sauce person then ask for extra because it’s soooo good with the sauce! We wish we could franchise it up North!

Worth and another visit

By austria313 |

I wanted to LOVE Chicken and Guns. I've heard lots about it. A friend of my is one of the new owners. The cart is so over the top cool. It smells incredible. It has so much going for it. Unfortunately, the gentlemen working the cart were really unwelcoming. They never cracked a smile. They chastised the customer in front of us for something. The poor guy was just trying to make conversation! I ordered the chicken and rice and a side of guns (smashed, smoked potatoes.) The bowl with chicken was good. I just wanted more smoke flavor. I decided that I want to return and just order the chicken. I'll be back. I hope they are more friendly and the smoke flavor really comes through in the food, not just in the air.

Tasty Chicken

By Faireborn |

Stopped for lunch at Chicken and Guns and ordered said dish. It was quite good. We also had an order of 6 wings which were great. They came with 2 sauces, sweet aji amarrillo chili sauce and habanero carrot sauce. The former sauce was much better than the latter. All told, the meal was unique and done well. You should go.

Never miss food cart chicken

By Hiroshi317 |

This shop is in the hawthorn blvd SW 12th. I understand the food cart is Portland's culture. This food cart is very good because surrounded by flower and there large roof of tent. Tables are clean and large so good for visiting with family. I recommend this chicken and gun. Chicken is smoking good smell soft, matches with local beer.

Delicious

If you have the chance, stop by this food truck. You won't be disappointing. The potatoes are alright, but the chicken is amazing.

Addictively delicious Peruvian chicken

By NEPDX |

On the recommendation of a friend, we ordered dinner delivered from Chicken and Guns, a popular food cart. The aroma was the first thing that got my attention -- garlicky, smokey, tangy. We ordered the whole chicken which came with a side; we opted to order extra "guns" or potatoes (so glad we did) and a side salad. First, the chicken: juicy and flavorful. I can't tell if it was grilled only, or smoked and then finished on the grill -- either way, it was some of the best chicken I've had in town, period. The potatoes are crispy lime salty on the outside and super tender on the inside. You'll find yourself scraping the bottom of the box for the little flaky bits of skin that have fallen off. The salad was a major step up. Most places just give you mixed greens. This salad had slices of cauliflower and beets -- it was super healthy and a generous portion. Best of all, they serve everything with this magical green sauce that you can't stop eating. It's great on the chicken, the potatoes, even the salad. I found myself thinking about ordering the chicken again the next day -- that's how good it is. We look forward to checking out the cart in person.

Excellent smoked chicken

By mattw922 |

After being named co-cart of the year for 2015 by Willamette Weekly, I figured I better pay a visit. Definitely worth the trip. The chicken has a delicious smoky flavor and the side of potatoes is fried just right - crispy on the outside but still soft in the middle. The green aji sauce over the top was a highlight. If you like smoked chicken you'll love this place.

Not raving about this one

By heydoglover |

Read many outstanding reviews of Chicken and Guns food truck so we thought we had to try them. We were disappointed. We had the dark meat chicken and it could have been cooked a bit more. It was not falling off the bone. The potatoes served with the chicken were good. Best of all was the spicy guacamole sauce served on the side. Licked the container clean of that stuff. What is nice about the food cart pod here is there is covered seating area to eat your food.

Great Wings with a lot of Spice

By Syreeta A |

Wings were great and a good value. The two sauces were very unique and kicked my butt with spice. The guns, which are the potatoes, were very tasty as well. They put a green sauce with it that looks gross to me but to my surprise ended up tasting great!

Sooooo good.

By Hammytoss |

While the chicken is spectacular and undeniably the best on the west coast the potatoes, yes the potatoes are out of this world. If you visit PDX, make this your one stop for sure. The cart pod is in a great spot across the street from Lardo and next to Pyro pizza, you can't lose.

Best chicken cart in Portland

By jazzie F |

We picked Chicken and Guns because it was featured in a restaurant guide we picked up. Ambiance was great. There was covered seating, fire pits, and nicely decorated landscaping that made for a great patio. We ordered the whole chicken at $27 and were nicely surprised to find it cut up for us. I expected a whole rotisserie chicken that we'd have to wrestle with. Not so and a nice touch. The chicken was wonderfully grilled, moist on the inside and slightly charred and spiced skin. But the sauce, OMG, I just want to drink it straight out of the cups they provide. We picked the aji sauce, some kind of a green Peruvian spicy sauce that was fantastic. Spicy but just right. There was another selection of sauce (chimichurri?) listed too. Between the two of us, we ate the entire bird. But wait, there's more. I haven't even gotten to the potatoes (aka guns) yet. They're magnificent. Crispy chunks, with skin, sprinkled with sea salt and pickled red onion. Slight lemon flavor and extra aji sauce as a side. We were provided a large order, one of the large take out boxes, that was full of them. We ate all those too and still salivate when thinking of them. You could have them as a stand alone for lunch if you wanted. We would definitely return and highly recommend a meal here. Oh, there were smaller chicken selections and also a salad with grains for vegetarians. Enjoy.
