Food was lacklustre . To be fair they were extremely busy. Food could have been great but no dish had been seasoned. It was almost like they had ran out of salt/pepper. I did manage to find just about the only salt and pepper pots in the place. Yes you can add seasoning after but I rarely have to these days. Service was okay. Waters were never refilled. Holiday decorations were beautiful and the amount of effort may be enough to stop in for a drink. Being part Scottish, I could not understand a Scotch Egg being called a “Scotia Egg”. That too was also poorly seasoned. Are the chefs not tasting the food? My 13 year old summed it up best “bland”. Oh and my wife’s Guinness Pot Roast was excessively sweet. Weird choice. Not their fault but finding parking is difficult. Oh and make a reservation.

With tickets for the Prop Theater across the street, we thought Chief O’Neill’s would at least be convenient with acceptable bar food for an early pre-play dinner. Turns out it was way better than that. We had our dinner, met friends at the theater, then returned afterwards. We were eight in the second visit. Though I’m not usually a big fan of Irish pubs, this place stood out, in every way. A huge assortment of beers – Irish, domestic, and other foreign, a wide selection of wine, and many specialty cocktails, even made to order. Among us we tried a few of each; none disappointed. The food, while not gourmet, was way better than expected. I know someone here complained that the burger choices were limited, but it was good enough for me – in fact, large and full-flavored, cooked just right with a generous supply of steak fries. One of my friends tried it and agreed. Other choices included stuffed chicken breast, bangers and mash, and Scottish eggs, all very well received. And, this being the Lenten season, they offered all-you-can eat fish and chips for the same price as the (generous) standard portion, also quite tasty. And we even tried a few of the excellent desserts. Service, from the receptionist, to the knowledgeable and friendly waiters, even to the bus boys – was excellent and attentive. We’re told they have live entertainment on Sundays. There’s a large pub area in the front, an even larger dining room beyond, and outdoor seating (we didn’t try it during the Chicago winter). Decorations may have been a little kitschy, but it did provide a festive air. So, while I wouldn’t necessarily call this a destination restaurant, I surely would give it a nod if you’re anywhere in the vicinity.

We live close to Chief O' Neill's walking for dinner approx. 6 times per year and love the outdoor dining in large garden setting, nice, peaceful and green. The food is always quite good, but the selection is limited and rarely changes, we would go more often, but end up eating the same things.

Awesome experience hosting an event at this pub. From start to finish everyone was about as helpful as they could be. Vanessa was responsive from the get-go and was an absolute pleasure to work with. She set our relatively small party (30+) in a lovely gazebo area in the pub beer garden and worked hard to make sure everything was perfect. Andy was our server for the night and was friendly, efficient and a pleasure to have around. We couldn't have been more pleased. We even had a back up room upstairs in case the weather turned on us (which it didn't). Lastly, the food - we were quite hopeful it would be good because the Sunday brunch had looked so appetizing and we weren't disappointed. It was presented very well and tasted delicious. I would highly recommend having special events at Chief O'Neill's. Can't wait to go back and see everyone there. Thanks!

One of the best Irish pubs in the world. Its based in Chicago and it's like you're walking into Ireland. The food is second to none. There is no better meatloaf in this entire galaxy. Irish favorites will make your mouth water.

Delicious food; wonderful service!! Too many people/too much waiting. We went to Thanksgiving buffet, so don't know if this is relevant to day-to-day experience.

It's all Good! Three of us went for brunch before taking in a play at the Royal George Theater. The presentation, variety and quality of food was excellent. All of our items were hot and fresh. I frequently observed their staff cleaning and exchanging older trays for fresh ones. Our server was attentive and friendly. They were very busy which called for the overflow to be seated upstairs in a very well appointed bar/restaurant room. If stairs are a problem, wait to be seated on the first floor, since you must go up/down the stairs to access the buffet. The buffet price is competitively priced at $20.00. We had Bloody Mary's which were a little pricey ($7.50 - $8.00?). They do have a "build your own" Blood Mary bar and a "build your own" Ice Cream Sundae bar, which we didn't utilize. We're looking forward to taking a trip into the city and visiting Chief O'Neills again. Reservations are accepted and recommended. Buffet Menu Items: http://chiefoneillspub.com/brunch/

We were expecting great things however were left disappointed. The buffet had lots of choice but cold... the beef was really nice as were the deserts. A bit of a let down over all. Slightly shocked that the waiter said he liked my perfume and that I smelled of sex!!!! We were also charged a very hefty service charge of 20%.

went on a tuesday night for dinner. wasn't crowded. server, Andy was the great. The side salad was a bit pricey, but well worth it. Hugh dish of mixed greens, my favorite, and the house dressing was perfect. BF had the soup of the day, which also was top notch. Entrees were corned beef and cabbage. Some of the best I have had. Good size portions, seasoned and cooked just right. Can't wait to go back for more.

I hosted a birthday party at Chiefs and was very, very happy with the results. The service was prompt, professional and attentive. The food was loved by all and the drinks were great. As it has been said before, the atmosphere is special and fun. I could not have had this party at a better place.

Visited Chief O'Neill's with a group of about ten and had a great time. The outside area in which we were seated was great. Unlike so much other outdoor restaurant seating, the area is fenced in, nicely landscaped and quite serene, a very pleasant setting. Good selection of beer, good food, and friendly service added our enjoyment. We also briefly sampled the evening's entertainment, which featured some authentic-sounding Celtic music. We're planning to return with a smaller group to get a more extensive sampling of the music. A truly great time.

Made reservations for 7pm Sat eve, Oct 25th. Busy place, but plenty of room for 4 at 7 pm. Band comes in at 9. Lots of irish choices. Shepherd's pie is huge - was enough for the 4 of us, but we all order other dinners. Great fish, great beers, fast service. Nice irish music, not too loud.

Have been up and down Elston Avenue a million times and have seen Chief O’Neill’s Pub & Restaurant many, many times, but never considered going in. Don’t know why, but just never did. The other day at work a co-worker was reheating something in the microwave and I asked what it was. He said it was from Chief O’Neill’s and then he said he had never been there but he met some friends there because it was right in the middle as a place to meet. He said it was nice and the food was good. With that recommendation I decided to try it the next day. Drove up on a cool and rainy Chicago Tuesday and was able to park on the street for right in front for free. As I walked in the place was not very busy for a Tuesday night, but there were people eating at the tables and about 10 people in the bar area. The sound of Irish music was in the background. I decided to sit at the bar and wait for my girlfriend to show up…she was at a yoga class. The bartender came over quickly and asked me what I wanted. I decided to have a Black & Tan which is a combination of Guinness and Smithwick’s. I asked the bartender about the place and he said that this was his first day and that he had only been in Chicago for about 2 weeks. He said he just came here from NYC after 11 years, but that he was from Derry, Northern Ireland. When asked about the bar he said he knew a little about the background and that it was named after Francis O’Neill who came from Ireland and became the police superintendent of Chicago in the very early 1900’s. Looking at the menu they offered an assortment of starters, flatbread combinations, soups, chili, salads, sandwiches, “Emerald Isle Favorites” and entrees. A wide and varied selection from which to choose. I stuck with the Emerald Isle favorites and had the Shepard’s Pie. For those unaware of this concoction theirs is made with ground veal and sirloin, carrots, peas, Rosemary and Thyme and then topped with browned mashed potatoes. We were sitting at the bar and were able to eat there. Damian, our bartender, placed the order and within a few minutes it came out of the kitchen. Usually when plates come from the kitchen you are always told to be careful because the plates are hot. Well in this case it was true. The plates were very hot and the Shepherd’s pie was hot too. Even before I dug in you could smell the rosemary and thyme as well as taste it when I stared to eat. There was a nice layer of mashed potato on top, but I wish it had been a little more browned, but the combination of the ingredients and the mashed potato was tasty and very moist. They also served a small loaf of Irish soda bread and butter with the meal. The Shepherd’s pie was so big that we each took about half of it home. It also appears that they have a larger room that can be used for events as well as an outside patio area which looks like it would be nice on a sunny warm day. Obviously they have a full bar with many Irish favorites on tap and they do have drink specials during the week. The staff was friendly, the service was great and the food was filling and good. This seems like a good place to have a pint with your friends and also have a good bite to eat. I would go back.

I was taken to Chief O'Neills for a "guys day out" while our ladies were participating in a bridal shower. It is about a mile east of the Kennedy near Addyston. The wondrous story of Chief O'Neill (printed on the back of the menu) is worth reading. A wonderful supply of Irish libations--Powers, Bushmiils, Jamieson, and my favorite, Tullamore Dew, are available. The bar food was excellent, but the best part of the experience is the wonderful, authentic Irish music and ambiance. Wander around and look at the paintings, artifacts, and enjoy the authentic Irish Police Uniform and accourtrements on display. This pub lives up to the slogan over the bar: "The Pub you've been practicing for". Give it a shot; you won't be sorry.

I have been coming to Chief O'Neill's for the last few years. I was looking forward to the quality and well prepared food that I have had in the past. Unfortunately, since I have been there last, the menu has changed twice. The newest revision, which I was told is about a month old, has reduced the restaurant into just another Pub that serves food, very disappointing. My friend and I had the corned beef sandwich which was described on the menu to be a mile high with cut thick marble rye bread. If the sandwich is considered to be a mile high, then so is an ant hill. The bread was just packaged bread that was the usual package breads, tasteless and less than ordinary. The restaurant for years truly remarkable place for the most inventive hamburgers, 12 - 14 different wonderful, outrageous and fantastic creations, moderately priced. The hamburgers of the past were 10 ounces and so noted on previous menus. The new menu now only offers one hamburger for $11 and no mention of it being 10 oz. In a city where there are so many wonderful outstanding restaurants, it is hard to believe that the owners would reduce its present offerings. If the other items on the menu or as less than mediocre as the corn beef sandwich, the owners are going to have a difficult time, if not an impossible time, to bring the restaurant and its reputation back to where it was before they " fixed it."

Looking for a good, unlimited fish fry, I dragged my wife here last night for the first time in a Chicago Irish pub. It was large, loud, out-of-the way, but still worth a visit. I found street parking pretty easily as others left and didn't wait much for a table. But it was mighty busy and loud at 6:30PM, and became more so as many 20-ish girls met in cackles for the occasion, drank a bit and, so, began to quack and shriek loudly. It became far too loud! The décor of this large pub-style restaurant was quite nice.Ordering drinks and dinner from our waitress, Jordan, went well, but this place's kitchen really fell down on its job. It took us more than an hour to be served our entrees and Jordan apologized repeatedly and sent us some "freebies", After perhaps 1.5 hours, my simple fish-and-chips dish finally arrived and was first-rate; I gobbled up my cod, skipped the chips, ordered two more pieces, got three more and took two home. We skipped any desserts or coffees and, having sat there for a long time already, were glad to leave. If I returned to another Irish pub In Chicago, I would pick a different night and place.

Solely based on a Google search there are not many interesting places to eat in the neighborhood. We were attending a performance in the area and a friend recommended this place. We were very pleased with our experience. Our food wasvery good and the service was nice once they find you. The atmosphere is nice. The outdoor area is amazing. We did choose to eat in the A.C. I don't live in this area of Chicago but if I did we would be regulars.

So what’s to like most? I think the Sunday brunch, particularly in the summer with all the families outside on the grass. Yes, grass in Chicago. This is a place you got to feel in your bones, but you can’t do that standing outside!!

Read about this irish chief of police and wanted to hear the irish music on a beautiful sunday afternoon. It was a beautiful evening our doors where a group of musicians sat around a table and played. What i especially liked was there were several young women (probably ages 10-16) included in the session participating as to passtjis music to the next generation. The beet salad was tasty and my friend had corn beef and cabbage which she loved. Traditional irish food with other healthy choices.

My wife and I attended a wedding reception at this restaurant. I can honestly say that this place is not your typical sports bar and grill. This place would probably go unnoticed by the average person driving by. With this said, the food was exceptional especially the beef tenderloin and chicken. Add to that a cheese and potato lasagne type vegetable (typical Irish) bread, and Irish soda bread. Oh my, the food was to die for so to speak. In addition to this the bar had top shelf alcohol along with non-alcoholic beer, soda and water. The staff was phenomenal. The waitresses were awesome as well as the bar tender. He went out of his way to make sure that I had non-alcoholic beer. Last but not least, this place has free valet parking (of course a tip should be given). The valet young man was polite and courteous. In addition to a huge indoor seating area, the restaurant has outside seating that is perfect for a wedding venue. It also has a private room for special events. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is truly worth the drive to the north side of Chicago. You will not be disappointed.

We went Sunday night to see "Music Mad", a short musical about Chief O'Neill's efforts to save music from his homeland and have it written down in a book so that Irish-Americans can keep the traditional tunes going....quite good music, story and performances. Then went to the dining room and enjoyed a massive burger topped with corned beef and thousand island dressing, with pub fries - whoa - a big meal! Service was great, both at the bar and at the table - lots of great beers to try. You'll be back again, no doubt!

Had a family Thanksgiving dinner here. Four adults and a 2 year old. Food was great, but service was tortuous. Took 30 minutes to get our soup; 45 minutes for our salad and the entrees arrived over an hour after we ordered. Had a desert buffet table with some nice items, but table was always out of something. Sometimes it was plates or spoons; other times was stawberries and cookies.

I have dined here three times. Except for tonight, two were for lunch. Every time, I have tried something different. All good. Tonight, I had the Irish BLT. It was a combination of Irish soda bread, rashers (Irish bacon), Brie cheese, tomato, and leafy lettuce. Not at all greasy and served with hand cut fries. Very tasty. Afterwards, it just so happened there was a comedy night going on at the pub in an upstairs area called The Attic. There were 5 comedians who were all funny. My wife and I thought we would catch one act and leave. We stayed for the whole show. The hostess tonight introduced herself as Vanessa and was very attentive to all the guests both in the restaurant and comedy area. We'll continue to go to this great Irish Pub.

I've been to Chief O'Neill's many many times over the last decade or so, and now that I no longer live in Chicago, it's a must-stop whenever we're in town. I've been there for concerts, whiskey tastings, dinner and even just the occasional pint. I'll review just the most recent visit when we came for a concert and had dinner first. We started with the Scotia eggs and the Kerrygold flatbread, both of which are new to me since my last visit, and both were excellent. We then had the fish and chips, which I've enjoyed many times, and this was no different. The service was excellent and attentive, and the Smithwicks drafts were good and cold. The background music was also wonderful. I've been to way too many "Irish" pubs in the States that have the décor but then are playing Bon Jovi when you walk in, and you have to wade through classic Irish items like quesadillas and nachos (both of which I like, but not at an Irish pub). Here, though, we had nothing but the classic jigs and reels and the occasional song, and it was wonderful. While the menu does have a few interlopers, you can be sure of finding classic Irish and English dishes that will be authentic in presentation and cooked perfectly. Sometimes it's the little things which can put your experience over the top, and the management here has got them just right.

Great brunch on Sunday. The weather cooperated by giving us a treasure of Sunny Sunday. Have a massive brunch sitting in the out door dining garden. Don't be scared off by the rather traditional neighborhood tavern look from the outside. These are the treasures that are Chicago. The neighborhoods are what make Chicago awesome. Sure, downtown/LOOP is world class, but Ahhhhh give me the neighborhoods. Chief O'Neill's shows you how the welcome mat is rolled out for the visitors. This was as much FOOD MAZE as it was BRUNCH. What a great time, with some awesome food, and the variety was like a cruise ship. Go, sit, eat, drink!....and explore the other neighborhoods!!!!!

My husband and I have been regular customers at Chief O'Neill's for many years now, and we have never been disappointed. The decor is absolutely beautiful, especially the interior during the Christmas holidays and the exterior outside garden during the summer. It’s a fantastic pub in both winter and summer. The music is always fantastic, the staff is friendly, the food is excellent, and the Guinness is so very good! If you have a chance, splurge for brunch one Sunday, it's amazing!!!

Not much has changed. O'Neill's is still serving good food and I'm glad they are thriving during the covid era. We ordered food-to-go which arrived freshly-made and hot! Shepherds pie was hearty and nicely spiced. I recommend this place for some solid Irish eats!

Visiting Chicago and looking for an Irish pub with beautiful patio and cool drinks to relax after an long day.. Chief O Neill's is the perfect spot for dinner n drinks. Though its away from downtown and action... this pub has has everything for a date night or friends reunion. Must try ! You will not be dissapointed.

I thought the food was just average. The Guinness was well-poured and service was very good. We went to see a band, which apparently was not well advertised because there were not many people there to hear a really good Irish group.

Chief O'Neill's is a must visit if you are visiting the north side of Chicago. The whole menu is gorgeous as 8 years of visiting have taught me. Whatever you choose you cannot go wrng, though personal favourites are the Guinness and Cheese soup, Chief's Caesar Salad, Corned Beef, Broiled Cod and the Dublin Broil. Real, authentic Irish food that if you closed your eyes you could be sat in a pub in Connacht... The atmosphere is great, the music fine and the craic overflowing. A great place to spend an evening with family or friends.

What is going on at this new Chicago institution? There is an attitude shift here. Previously a place that you felt instant joy and homelike comfort has detached from its customers. The art of business is not appearing you are in it for the money rather to serve your customers and the money a bi-product of your success. The opposite is true now. There have been significant staff changes, for what appears no good reason. This restaurant ran like a clock but not so much now. The service is still decent but the food is in serious decline. Go here for the remainder of a once great staff but beware something has changed.

This is a theme pub celebrating Francis O’Neill, Irish music preservationist and Chicago superintendent of police at the turn of the twentieth century. It is stuffed floor-to-ceiling with Irish memorabilia from framed proclamations to teapots. Depending on your taste you may find it nostalgic or over-decorated. The menu includes the expected Irish favorites–fish n chips, bangers (sausage) and mash (potatoes), corned beef and cabbage, etc. I can vouch for the fish–downright ethereal. An Irish-American member of our party revealed an addiction to the Guinness and cheese soup and expressed satisfaction with her corned beef. Regulars say that if you want a little bit of everything, the signature dishes appear at the weekend buffet brunches. The featured cocktails mostly involve bourbon, not Irish whiskey. Why? Appropriately, Chief O’Neill’s is a music venue, so check the website to see what’s on.

Inexpensive brunch on Saturday, $20. Quantity, quantity. Kids loved it, chocolate fountains, lots of sweets. Buffet included breakfast items, fish, at least four different potato dishes, salads, much more. Omelette Made to order. Quality not so much, but if you are really hungry and not too particular, this is the place for you.

Thanks to Grace, our server, we had a comforting Irish dinner by the fire in a quiet setting. We all tried something different from the menu...from lamb shank, chicken curry, fish and chips and my favorite, the Shephard's Pie! It was absolutely delicious!

Expect great variety, a fabulous tavern setting, a big separate indoor dining area and a big outdoor "backyard" type seating area. We were thrilled "afterwards" to have found it when googling for Sunday brunches. It's a real gem. The bloody mary bar was a highlight with unlimited cajun shrimp too. We sampled so many things it's hard to remember all that we ate. Let's just say this, I wasn't hungry at dinner time. We will definitely add Chief O'Neill's to our rotation of restaurants/bars we go to when visiting Chicago.

We trained to Chicago to listen to the band, Rulia Bulia. The boys are from Ireland and we had met them in 2016 at a local Irish fest, I had written ahead to the bar for assistance and received prompt reply form the owners. After a crazy taxi ride, we arrived and settled into our reserved table, Thanks to the owners for the best seats in the house. The waiter was most attentive, the food was served timely and very well prepared, Of course the band was even better than expected. We highly recommend this place

My friends and I had dinner here. It was wonderful. Fish and chips was great, wonderful salads. Loved the athmesphere and the staff were so friendly. The service was very good. I am taking my family for Easter brunch. Cant wait.

Spouse and I decided to try this place because it was his birthday and he was in the mood for an Irish pub. He had a pork shank and I had the meatloaf. Both were delicious. Even though the bLackhawks were playing, there were only a few occupied tables, so it wasn't too loud. Friendly service and a wide selection of draught beers... What more could we want?

I had a great meal and a great time at Chief O'Neill's. The banger burger was a real treat. I met up with friends there and we spent hours sitting outside enjoying the surroundings. Thank you to the staff!

We planned out visit for the last Sunday in a month so we could be there for the live music of the Irish Heritage Hooley which is the last Sunday of every month I guess. Good music and quite good food. The atmosphere was excellent, we would go again. I'd like to find some Irish music in a more cozy pub (smaller) but this was great. The Scotia Eggs were very well prepared, best Scotch eggs I've had, with the eggs being done just right. They could have used a bit more seasoning but otherwise very good, with the arugula salad accompaniment being excellent and a perfect paring. We shared a Steak & Guinness pie. The flavor was excellent but the root vegetables were fairly under cooked. The pastry was excellent. The Guinness was very good. It also afforded me the opportunity to try a bit of Green Spot, which I had always wanted to try but didn't want to splash out on a full bottle. It was good but I prefer Paddy's.

We had a lovely family brunch with excellent food. We had lots of choices for all the family. Sunday brunch is an all you can eat buffet and the food is excellent and great value and very tasty. Siobhan the owner came to greet us as we were visiting from Ireland. As it was Mother’s day in Ireland we were presented by a bottle of wine each as we were leaving. It was a perfect end to a very good day. If you are looking for somewhere to seat all the family with good food and lots of choices then this is the place. Thanks to all in Chief O Neill’s for a great day

We made the mistake of showing up at this hot spot without reservations. We sat out in the courtyard (our choice) and it was cold. However, when the food came, the weather was second in our mind. The staff was incredible and a great experience. I can see when the weather warms up, the atmosphere of the courtyard would be incredible. If you go at night and by cab, you may have a hard time hailing a cab. I would recommend booking a cab online, we used Flash Cabs. After waiting forever, we went online and booked a cab and they were there within 5-10 minutes on a Saturday night.

From the second you walk in, the decor is old school Irish. The collection of beers and whiskey list to start off with.tremendous.. Authentic dishes all around from the Irish Lamb stew to the Irish Pot pie to the delicate cod dish my wife had.. Great service.. Great outdoor deck and live music for an all around fantastic evening with friends!

We actually went to see a new young Irish group "Connla". We decided to have dinner also. Well, don't let anyone tell you that the Irish can't cook. Because we had the most delicious dinners. I recommend everyone visit this establishment for both food and music.

This is not fancy, just a nice little neighborhood Irish pub, but with some EXCELLENT food! Their chef is far better than average, the food was perfectly spiced and prepared, the vegetables in the stew were just right, not overcooked and the salmon was cooked to perfection. We had Irish Stew and the Irish salmon, both were everything we could ask for. The blackened Brie appetizer was delicious and worth the money, and the Soda bread they served before we ordered was a nice touch. Of course there were many Irish whiskeys available and many beers as well, we were drinking Guinness. The beer was poured properly and served at the perfect temperature. Service was good and friendly. I will visit this pub again the next time I am in Chicago

Staff was confused and when food was finally available it was cold. Also 9 dollars for a Guinness, the most expensive we have had in Chicago. The music was very good.

Had dinner and a beer here. The food is good, but is pretty standard bar fare. If that's what you are in the mood for, they do it well. Bartender was great. Staff seemed really nice. Looking forward to trying their brunch as I hear it's also quite good.

We read about the Christmas decorations being elegantly over the top. Indeed they are beautiful. However, the Irish Pub atmosphere combined with delicious food makes this a “must do” whether you live in the area or are just visiting. Our server Jennifer was attentive, friendly and very helpful. We started with house crafted drinks. We ordered the “Far from Home” which was Chief O’Neill’s version of a Manhattan. Smooth, sweet and delicious. Absolutely perfect. We had some Oysters and Cheddar and Guinness Soup to start and followed those with a Chile entree and a braised Pork Shank. The portions were large and the food was deliciously prepared. We loved it. Too full for dessert (I hate missing dessert) we finished the meal with a traditional Irish Coffee. This place is so popular that reservations are hard to get…..we went at 4:00 PM. Do not miss this place!

Great place, awesome environment, they have events with music, really cool Patio is great Friendly staff

Corn beef egg rolls, glazed carrots, risotto and sweet rye bread are among the tasty and unusual menu offerings. The waiters wear police uniform shirts and there is a lot of police memorabilia on display throughout the restaurant. A large, inviting outdoor terrace that is great for a summer night. On Sunday evenings there is an Irish music jam (Sessions). Fun place.

I like this place- Birthday dinner for me and my daughter. Good beer selection, really nice atmosphere, warm feeling place. Service was a little iffy, we had a hard time getting the server over to the table. Once we did, the food was delicious and elegantly served. I had, and recommend, the blackened salmon with mashed potatoes, and green beans. It was well prepared and tasted wonderful.

Went this past Sunday AM for brunch. Definitely busy, but not packed at 11:30, a few tables still open inside. Sat outside though. Excellent buffet. Loved the variety. Everyone in my party was happy with almost everything. Desserts were a bit off, either lots of spice or not the right texture, but part of it may have been because it was hot and humid - for instance, Creme Brulee top was not hardened like most. Other then the Eggs Benedict tray not being changed fast enough for us, not a single complaint. Two in my party had Bloody Mary's and said there were excellent. Service was ok, seemed a bit under-staffed for the size of the crowd. Took waitress a long time to get back to refill drinks and give us the check but I think I only saw 2 or 3 for the whole place. Definitely an interesting crowd. Lots of people looking nice, lots of "pretty people." Would like to go back and see what this place is like on a weeknight.

The Guinness was perfect. It was just like in Ireland. Smooth and not over chilled. I tasted the Guinness and Cheddar soup, fish and chips, Shepard's Pie, meat loaf and their salmon special. The were all perfect! I cannot wait to come back!

Had brunch there yesterday, omg it was heaven! I never saw so many of my favorites in one place,I thought I died and went to heaven it was that good!!! The sweets were omg good!!! Plus its so close that I can walk there. Will take my favorite people here for bdays. Soooooo tony the tiger great!!!!!"

We had a drink (or two) and shared some appetizers here after a day in the sun. The food was significantly better than I expected for pub food. I would recommend it to others

This place is a Real Irish Pub. Wonderful. We were there on a Sunday night celebrating birthday with family and they even had Irish musicians who came in and were jaming for hours. Great Irish dishes and atmosphere and outstanding service. A real treat. Been there at least 6 times and have always loved it. Look forward going back

Started my week to Chicago visit with a stop at Chief O'Neill's for brunch. It was a wonder I could move afterward . A wide variety of fish and breakfast choices. Breakfast includes eggs Benedict, waffles, sausage, bacon, made to order omelets that was cooked to absolute perfection! I have never had a better omelet. Fish choices include calamari, salmon, shrimp, and fish and chips. I remember meatball and chcicken wing options but had to stop some place! There was a fresh fruit platter that was pretty picked over when we started. It was replaced before we left so did take advantage of that. The chocolate fountains were a fun feature but witnessed several other customers wondering how to actually get the chocolate. Also watched a small unsupervised young girl touching and dropping a number of things from the dessert table. I stuck to higher levels in dessert!

This place has been around for about 12 years now and never gets the accolades it deserves. The owners pay allot of attention to the atmosphere, menue and entertainment and this is a place to just relax, eat well and have fun. Chief;s is good for the family, just couples late night or for Sunday brunch.

This place is the bomb! I had to leave just so I would stop eating. Chicken in puff pastry with curry dipping sauce was addicting, Guiness-marinated flank steak crostini topped with bleu cheese left us licking the plate, followed by the "hands-down" best fish & chips I've ever eaten. Brandon & Joe behind the bar were top-notch as well. Great atmosphere!

Great Irish food, really good beer selection and a nice little beer garden for the Summer months. In the cold weather, huddle over a bowl of steaming hot beef stew. Be sure to try the Fish 'n' Chips.

A bit of a Chicago institution. It's waaay up there (Addison/Elston), but then again, there are a lot of people waaay up there 😀 The food is ok (not good, not bad. ok). The beer, OTOH, is quite good - gone are the days when your choices were Guiness, Harp, and Bud/BudLight/Miller - nowadays there is always a decent selection of local/craft brews on tap, and a friendly bartender to serve it up. Back to the food - what it lacks in awesomeness, it more than makes up in quantity (and alcohol-friendliness. Read "lots of fat"). All in all, a good time...

When you can't get to Ireland for some great Irish food and music, but you can get to Chicago, Chief O'Neill's is your place! We were looking for an authentic pub that offers both in a family-friendly atmosphere, and we couldn't have been more pleased. They allowed us to make reservations on a Friday night (yay!) and we requested to be seated near the band. Two musicians started at 7, and slowly others joined so that by 9, there were about 12 musicians coming and going for the jam. One of the coolest things about it was the musicians were of all ages. There were several teenagers, which is pretty impressive for a Friday night commitment. We enjoyed fish and chips, shepherd's pie and a burger. All portions were HUGE, and the fries/chips served with the fish and burger were a big hit. Also, the cheese curds were AMAZING!!!!!! Skip the bread pudding. Its presentation was lovely, but we didn't like the pudding. Too dry. Try a different dessert. The history of the place is really cool. Read all about Chief O'Neill on the menu. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. Loved the whole experience. Will be telling everyone I know who visits Chicago to try Chief O'Neill's.

One of those rare occurrences where "we'll find something nearby" worked out well. We had the place to ourselves, not usually a good sign, but really enjoyed the history of the namesake and the atmosphere. Great, friendly service and prompt attention, but again it was empty. Ordered bangers and mash, meatloaf and a creamy pasta dish, all were well prepared and tasty. Not sure how to square our experiences with others of late, but we'd recommend giving it a go.

Back in Chicago for a visit we had experienced their brunch when we lived there and booked for it on our visit. Worth every penny. I have never seen such a huge brunch. Corned beef to calamari to fish and chips and omelettes. Cannoli, croissants, chocolate fountains, smoked salmon, cheeses and MORE!!! It was just as good as the first time. Service was very good too. They would have rated a 5 except that some of the food was not very hot. Still good though. Great stuff! It gets busy, so go early.

good location and the food is amazing as well. nothing fancy but good quality and a good crwd. the only problem is that the crowdedness!

Born and raised in the city of Chicago has afforded me the opportunity to visit hundreds of bars and restaurants. Good old fashioned Irish hospitality, coupled with great food, and even better bartenders makes Chief O'Neill's my favorite Irish Pub in the city! If you are fortunate enough to visit on a Sunday afternoon, you might get the chance to have Mike, as your bartender, who will shake your hand, learn your name, and offer you attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable service. Anyone can pour a Guiness, right, but when you sit down and pull up your stool at the beautiful polished wood bar, staring at the Irish harp surrounded by bottles of good whiskey, and have the bartender make it a point to go out of his way to make you feel welcome, well, then you have just experienced what an Irish Pub is all about. Try the Scottish eggs as an appetizer, ask Mike to recommend a great Irish whiskey, and treat yourself to the coziness of this Irish sanctuary. Sundays are great days to be honored with local Irish musicians who come and hang out in the main dining room, treating guests to fiddles and Irish music! Their beer garden is second to none! Have your next event here or just enjoy your beer surrounded by trees donning lanterns and a pleasant atmosphere for everyone! A++++++ LOVE IT HERE!

The atmosphere of the O'Neill's pub is exceptional. The decoration brings you directly to Ireland. The staff's contact is warm and very friendly. A very nice place to drink before or after visiting the neighbor Parachute restaurant.

Awesome place! I got a rude email from a server & the owner heard about it and fixed it immediately.

There are more than a few Irish restaurants that are located in the city of Chicago, but this is certainly one of the better ones. There is on-street parking and when you enter you will notice the ambiance of an authentic Irish pub. They certainly do pay homage to the person whom the bar is named after, Chief Francis O'Neill, who was the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Dept. from 1901 - 1905. There are old pictures that include both police and fire, as well as some other memorabilia. We tried the scotch egg appetizer and weren't disappointed with it. There were two large eggs and a dipping sauce, along with greens - nearly enough for a salad. Along with one of the entrees, we also tried a cup of the guinness & cheddar soup. It seemed a bit stout, and there possibly could have been a little more cheese, but it also had a very good taste. For the entrees we chose the shepherd's pie and the steak & guinness pie. The shepherd's pie was topped with browned mashed potatoes and the steak & guinness pie was like a puff pastry topping. Both were very good and both were substantial portions, as in we did take some home. Our server, Mike, was attentive to us and personable. They have a large patio in the back, so if it is a nice day or evening, it may be nice to sit outside. The background music was all Irish and fun to listen to. Check their website, as they often do live music there, as well.

I've been there quite a few times, food is always excellent, as well as the service. Wait staff is attentive, and very knowledgable about the menu. Their recommendations have always been spot on. Love the Irish music in the background, and overall ambiance. My best friend is actually having her wedding there in their garden this summer. I'm so looking forward to the party and an entire buffet of their food.

I first came here to see a play directed by a friend and arrived early to just grab dinner. We return whenever we can for the easy atmosphere and amazing food. You 100% need to try the lamb stew.

My wife and I examined a dozen surveys of the top-rated Irish pubs in Chicago and determined that Chief O'Neill's Pub and Restaurant is No. 1. So we decided to see for ourselves. Located at 3471 North Elston Avenue, southeast of the Elston, Addison and Kedzie triangle, in the Avondale neighborhood, the corner pub opened in 1999 with a traditional Irish decor, food, music and garden that has become a popular late-night go-to destination for leprechauns of all ages. It is open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday. It was named for Francis O'Neill, who was Superintendent of Police in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. He served for 32 years, retired in 1905, then concentrated on his intense passion for the traditional music of his native County Cork in Ireland. Before he died in 1936, he collected over 2,000 tunes and his 1903 publication of O'Neill's Music of Ireland included 1,850 tunes, the largest collection of Irish music ever published. At Chief's (O'Neill preferred to be called Captain rather than Chief or Superintendent), enjoy the music with Irish cuisine. We started with Maryland crab cakes, calamari and shrimp, a Reuben roll with corned beef, house kraut, Irish cheddar and 1,000 Island dressing and a bowl of Celtic chili with cheese, scallions and sour cream. For our main course, we sampled two Emerald Isle favorites--fish and chips with beer battered North Atlantic cod, peas, cole slaw, tartar sauce and fries and chicken pot pie with chicken breast, mushrooms, peas, carrots, pearl onions, sherry cream sauce and a puff pastry. But I must admit I was tempted to order the Guinness infused meatloaf with bacon wrapped beef, veal and pork, mashed potatoes, vegetables, onions and mushrooms. Perhaps next time. There are many lively and inviting Irish pubs in Chicago--they're as plentiful as Irish politicians--but Chief O'Neill's is as good as it gets.

We had a dinner for six and a few pints - our server was awesome in that he let us have happy hour specials though it was a tad after six (cheese curds with sauce like chic fila were great) - had stew/salads/fish and chips/ etc. and everything was good- stew was especially good with a guiness. No music that night but will def. return when someone's playing.

Picked this place for location near a theatre (Prop Theatre). Decent beer and very extensive single malt scotch list, including Irish whiskies. Salmon entree (two of us got) over the top--nice piece of salmon, lovely sauce, the triple cooked potatoes amazing. Good service. Music a little loud, but they turned it down. I got lamb shank special; also very flavorful, although semolina dumplings served on the side weren't as warm as I'd have liked.

I’ve been coming here for years and it doesn’t disappoint. Cozy, unpretentious and excellent food. A highlight is sitting in the beautiful outdoor dining space early evening. I feel like I’m on vacation. Also the incredible Sunday brunch could stand up to a Vegas buffet. My family are big fans of this place!

I have reviewed this restaurant favorably in the past. Recently, however, I held a family event private booking. I feel the need to reiterate my satisfaction with this venue. Apparently, no party is too small or large for Chief O'Neil to treat well. A recent graduation, in the family, led me back to Vanessa who is the manager of the restaurant. She has long been this restaurant's consistent anchor. Though Chief O'Neil seems to have solid employees, restaurant staff typically comes and goes but Vanessa is always there overseeing the hospitality, food, beers, and exceptional wine list (for a pub). I approached her, about a party for fifteen. She interviewed me in a professional manner and really listened to what I wanted. She then made suggestions and enhanced what I had envisioned as a simple family-get-together, into a well run, family "party", including food suggestions, paired with beverage and the brief appearance of some live Irish music to celebrate the event. Nothing over-the-top or super pricey but fun, food, and family, for a reasonable price. I simply feel compelled to thank Vanessa for her professionalism and ever present smile. The staff, under her direction, were excellent as well. If you are looking for a venue for any size get together from an outdoor wedding (going on same day) or simple reunion; Chief O'Neil has it going on.

So we recently moved back to the City and just down the road is an Irish Pub (Big Surprise!) But not just any Irish Pub, one of the best pubs in the world, so says numerous experts. All i know is that it is an authentic Chicago Irish pub with GREAT Irish fare and super nice bartenders. I've heard about a fantastic Sunday Buffet (not Brunch) and a fabulous beer garden, so we are looking forward to walking over there this spring and staggering home....

Very disppointed to find this bar closed at 11 pm on Thursday, 9th April. Maybe there was a good reason for it but there was no notice on the door to say why it was closed when it's advertised online as being open till 2 am. We were in Chicago for one night and flying back to Ireland the next day so naturally very disppointed to find it closed after getting a taxi there from the city centre where we were staying. Certainly wouldn't put me off going back but opening hours do need to be updated on website and Facebook etc.

Chief O'Neill's is a large Irish pub in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago. It's located on Elston on an industrial stretch of the street, but that is not keeping people away from this pub. Given that the restaurant is a little of the beaten path, you will primarily find locals here, which I appreciate. I highly recommend that you call in a reservation a day or two in advance, because it gets packed, especially on the weekends. This is a huge restaurant/pub with Irish and Chicago police decorations, and it has one of the largest beer gardens/outdoor seating areas that I know of in Chicago. The menu consists of traditional Irish and American bar food; I have really enjoyed their fish and chips and burgers. The drinks are good - lots of beers, whiskeys, and cocktails to choose from. There reason why am not giving Chief O'Neill's five star rating is due to the prices being a tad high, and the service being just average. Overall, I really enjoy this pub, and will continue to give them my business.

Went there for a few drinks so we did not try the food but the service was great, friendly, fast, the beer very good and they had live musing that night. Loved reading the history on the menu.

Food grand , beer ok , music terrific , enjoyed one of the best session of Irish music ever , John Doyle joined by John Williams a night to remember.

In 2013, Chief O'Neill's Pub and Restaurant at 3471 North Elston Avenue in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood was voted readers of the esteemed Ireland of the Welcomes magazine as one of the top 10 Irish pubs in the world. The Chicago Tribune described Chief O'Neill's meat-and-potato Shepherd's pie as the best in Chicago. And WTTW's critical dining show, Check Please, praised Chief O'Neill's classic Irish music, Shepherd's pie, meatloaf, fish and chips and pints of Guinness. The more often my wife and I visit an Irish pub in Chicago, the more we enjoy the experience. No disappointments. At Chief O'Neill's, on our first visit, we sampled Guinness Cheddar soup, Chief's Caesar salad, Scotia eggs, fish and chips, Atlantic salmon and key lime pie. During our second visit, we had Celtic chili, seared Atlantic cod, Guinness braised pot roast, corned beef sandwich on marble rye and bread pudding. Bangers and mash, anyone? Sunday's brunch buffet from 10 to 2 is a popular event. The options include salads, soups, cheeses, house smoked Atlantic salmon, peel and eat shrimp, fried Atlantic calamari, Irish Eggs Benedict, made-to-order omelets, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, French toast, waffles, Chief's fish and chips, assorted breads, mini pastries, fresh fruit, build-your-own ice cream sundae and build-your-own Bloody Mary. Arrive early and arrive hungry. The Irish know a good thing when they eat there.

Great fall off the bone ribs, with delivery. Everything you'd anticipate at an Irish Pub done well and as you imagine a huge bar.

Took the whole clan for family dinner and had a great time. Authentic Irish food and drink were very satisfying. Service was good although they were a little busy.

If you've only been to Chief's for the incredible, awe-inspiring, and almost overwhelming Sat/Sun brunch buffet, then you need to come back in the evening - there may be a pair of pipe and fiddle players in the corner by the fire, or a full band in the back room, but in any case, the atmosphere is as Irish as you'll get - convivial and comforting, with everyone ready to make a friend. That's not to say you can't have a quiet, private evening if that's what you want - there's plenty of cozy corners, and when the HUGE patio/lawn is open in good weather, there's sunny afternoons or romantic sunset views for everyone. The food is terrific, the bar list is extensive, the staff is friendly and easygoing but professional and great their jobs. The decor is lovely and cozy, with thoughtful touches everywhere - this place is obviously loved by its owners as much as its patrons. They host plays, concerts, and readings - there's always something happening! I love coming here, and anyone who's been here once probably feels the same. Do yourself a treat and check out Chief's.

Ate here today after about a year hiatus and Chief O'Neill's still has the best brunch. From the great savory items - the omelet station and peel and eat shrimp and great calamari to the fish and chips and incredible french toast, to the sweet desserts - two kinds of chocolate fountains and cookies and brownies - Chief O'Neill's is the place to be for Sunday brunch.

I have been waiting a long time to enjoy Chief O'Neill's. Too have a true Irish cuisine experience. So I read all the reviews, thought this will be a slam dunk for a good meal - Was I wrong! First walked in just as they opened, the place was empty, the snarky little elf asked it we had reservations (we didn't), tried to put us in a tiny little table that wouldnt hold a lamp. We said no too small. This was in the front area. He then took us to the incredible cold back room with an attitude - said we could sit at a high table, we said no .Too high(my feet would dangle). Then sat us down with a regular table. Our server who shall go nameless wearing a incredibly dirty shirt got us coffee. - Which came to the table cold. You know who you are. We went to the buffett. I first tried the omelette( made in front of you). It was edible but incredibly watered down egg batter. Instead of a yellow omelette, I had a kind milky white omelette with bits of ham. With that I got the cheddar hash browns (Spicy with jalapenos and pepper) (What?)and sausage (Not Irish sausage). Then went to get some corn beef hash ( Spicy with jalapenos and hot sauce). (What?) What was good - the bread pudding, the cod and the carved corned beef. Everything else. pretty much what you would get at a cafeteria. I will never go again and will not recommend this to anyone. For $20 (plus drinks), I will go to O'donovans on Irving Park ( a much better experience) and they dont take themselves so seriously.

This quaint location could be the setting for any movie or TV Irish pub. Old fashioned charm with outdoor seating and live music add to the reasons to visit. What a fun neighborhood place with a variety of dishes offered on the menu. We are told the weekend brunches are the top of the list, but we enjoyed dinner nonetheless. The “chips” are above and beyond delicious.

Very poor experience. How the whole thing was handled was very unprofessional, to say the least. Our group paid a $75 deposit for a private room. What we got was a table on the patio that was neither private nor a room. When we complained that this is not what we paid for, they said they'd go prepare for us the room we had reserved. Why they didn't have that room ready for us ahead of time is beyond me, since they knew we were going to be there at six, and we were right on time. While they prepared the room, we sat at a table outside on the patio, basically ignored. The server who did come around a couple of times was extremely rude. EXTREMELY rude. Other groups out on the patio were given chalk for their kiddos to draw on the sidewalk with. We had three kids in our party and were not offered any chalk. Because we were moving, most of us just sat there with no drinks or even glasses for water. Twenty to thirty minutes later, we were brought up to a hot attic that was warmer than it was outside in July, except there was no breeze in the attic to cool us off. The air conditioning was on, but it was obvious that they had JUST turned it on. By the end of our meal, it was finally cool enough to be comfortable, but that was about two and a half hours after they took us up there. Despite our coordinator reminding the owner earlier in the week to confirm our reservation, I felt like they were not prepared for our party at all, despite paying a $75 deposit. The server who took care of us in the party room was very nice. Though we did have to wait a long time before getting our food and whatnot, and we had to refill our waters ourselves more than a couple times. They were out of one of the sauces for my husband's meal, so instead of letting him know that so he could order something else, they just unilaterally decided to make him an entirely different dish. WHAT?! When she brought it up, he said politely, "this isn't what I ordered," and she was like, "yeah, we're out of that sauce so they made you something different." Who does that?! Seriously! What they brought was not at all something he would eat, so he ordered something else. In the meantime, everyone else was eating, and he had to wait for a whole new dish to be made, instead of telling him immediately so he could order something else right then. I ordered a strawberry, cranberry salad. Who'd think that salad would be spicy, but wow! The nuts were SUPER spicy! The menu didn't mention that it's a spicy salad, and that's not a dish you would normally expect to be spicy, so they REALLY need to mention that on the menu. I don't really care for super spicy foods, so I would've ordered something else if I'd known. The whole endeavor took three hours. Seriously, we got there at 6pm, and we left 5 minutes before 9, and it wasn't from us hanging out for a long time afterwards. It just took a ridiculous amount of time to set up the room (that should've been set up prior to us getting there) and getting our food, which wasn't quick either. We had three exhausted kiddos (3, 4 & 6) by the end of it! We were all really looking forward to this being an enjoyable evening, and we certainly made the best of it, but the whole experience was just terribly disappointing.

Chief O'Neill's is amazing, a Chicago institution. Named after the Chicago police chief who saved many traditional Irish folk songs from obscurity by notating them in his famous songbook. Their food is excellent, never had a bad meal here. Its especially nice to go on Sunday evenings to hear the live Celtic music session, or for their amazing all you can eat brunch on the weekends. This isn't a rowdy pub, but more of a cozy restaurant, just to set the right expectations. My favorite restaurant in Chicago

My husband and his sister have been coming here for 4 years, one Friday during lent. This is my first time and let me say that the food was awesome. I have the chicken and chips since I do not like fish. Everyone in the party fell in love with the fish and I with the chicken. Yes I will go again once a year but the only thing I did not care for was the service. Our waiter took so long to help us out . Our drinks took the longest.

My son moved to the area and we were looking for a place to eat. We chose here based on reviews and we were not disappointed. We ate in the garden and it was so quaint. Backyard beautiful. The food was anazing. Highly recommend the bacon flatbread and corned beef sandwich. Will definitely be back.

Great atmosphere, great service, great food! What else do you want?! Had the fish and chips but the cheese and Guinness soup was phenomenal. Beer and whisky list was impressive and the wine list impressive. Very cozy atmosphere.

There was so much food. So. Much. Food. Staff-excellent, Atmosphere-excellent, Food-Excellent! There was a really great variety and everyone left totally satisfied. My only one complaint-the omelets were swimming in oil (literally like 1/4 of a cup in the pan every time he made a fresh omelet) so we didn't eat them because they just didn't taste very good. BUT THE REST OF THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! We found this place on Trip Advisor and are so happy we did, we can't recommend this place enough!

Now I'm a New Yorker, born and raised. So it saddens me that the best Irish pub I've been to outside of Ireland is not in the big apple, but in Chicago! NYC pride aside, Chief O'Neill's is top notch all the way. Our waitress, Jo, was fantastic! She was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. I had a half and half (Guinness and Harp) and a black & tan (Guinness and Smithwicks), my husband stuck with straight Guinness. For food we started with an order of Scotia Eggs (a play on Scotch eggs with lamb instead of sausage), then lamb stew for me, and bangers and mashed for my husband. Everything was poured, cooked, and served to perfection!! If I lived closer I'd probably be there once a week! Oh, and bonus: walking into an IRISH PUB and hearing IRISH MUSIC!! What a novel concept!

Glad that I finally got the chance to come here with a friend as it is only a short walk from my place. The hostess (who also ended up being our server) was incredibly charming--a REAL Irish lass! and the people who hang out here seemed to be a lot of old school locals creating a nice atmosphere. Would love to come here and just hang out and drink pint after pint of Guinness. We shared a starter of Scotia Eggs, which were really good but I think the eggs were a little overcooked. The salad and the mustard vinaigrette were both great. My fish n chips was good. I don't always like fish n chips, but the batter was crispy and the fish was still moist and flavorful. The tartar sauce is the bomb and even the chips were crispy and had great seasoning. Very tasty. My friend got the Dublin Broil and unfortunately it was way overcooked, but they were kind enough to make a new one that was rare and tasty. She liked the dish a lot (when it was cooked correctly!) The type of place that I would definitely come back to.

I was here last night with the wife and my oldest daughter. They had live Irish music playing. We had the Guinness steak pie, braised pot roast, and the special pork belly. It was all great. The chef here does a great job of preparing the food and the flavors are just unreal. This said my daughter is a trained chef and loves the food too. The portions are over size IMO since I rarely finish my dinners and usually have leftovers to take home. The service is good and friendly. They have a larger dining area beyond the bar, a garden, and can host events upstairs. Its all good so stop by for a pint or supper.

Summer is magical here. The outdoor garden is spacious, beautiful, and relaxing. Having a cocktail under the twinkly lights makes you feel like you are no longer in the city. The food is basic fare, nothing too special, nothing bad. I go for the ambiance of the outdoor space, the Irish music, and drinks.

This Irish pub / restaurant always puts out quality food and a good time. Even though I wasn't there on a Sunday this time, I've always enjoyed their brunch. This stop was for a light lunch and they didn't disappoint. Just what I wanted.

We went to this bar to watch the baseball game. When we arrived, on a Sunday night, they had live Irish music. It was a gathering of people who just jammed and it was really, really cool. This has the decor of a typical Irish pub - nice and cozy with lots of decorations. The beer was good and the service was as well. They did close the kitchen at 9:00 which seemed a bit early to us. Overall, we'd return for a drink.

Went there with a group event and so had to endure the buffet line. Some things were excellent, like the cheesy scrambled eggs, which is probably the best serving of eggs I've ever eaten from a station like this. I also tried the caprese salad, which was acceptable (used a lemon slice from a nearby empty salmon station to give it a kick the way I do when I make it at home), as well as the fried shrimp (cold, but the zesty sauce was good). At the hot food station, I tried the last meatball (which was yummy and in a good sauce), as well as the plentiful but not very yummy stuffed roast (was it pork? Dry and most stuffing gone). I would have liked to try the Salmon Eggs Benedict, which the man sitting next to me had to have a waiter bring to him since they were out at the buffet station, and he was elderly and tired of waiting for a new order to be put out. However, he said it was the best thing he ate that morning. The fish and chips were also out when I went by, and I was sad, since they were something I really wanted to try. At the dessert spread, I helped myself to the tiramisu (acceptable and plentiful), as well as the milk chocolate fountain (tried both marshmallows and strawberries) but ended up having a huge chocolate stain on my plate as I tried to de-skewer the marshmallow so I could grab a second one. Many people also seemed to like the white chocolate fountain, but that's not my style. We had a ton of people for the event, and we were among the last 2 tables to go, but I still felt as though many things were picked over and wished we had gone just ourselves for a meal. That would be my main complaint - just not enough stuff for the number of people who were there. That said, however, all the Irish decor really pleased my Irish spouse and the other Irishman who sat on my other side, who even knew the history of Chief O'Neill. Might try again for a romantic meal with hubby as their regular menu seems quite good.

This is the second year in a row our family has gone to the Mother's Day Brunch. It is awesome! They have everything - FIsh and Chips, a Carving Station with 3 choices, and both white and dark chocolate fountains!

From the outside, it looks okay - average, in fact - but on the inside, it is warm, inviting, cozy. The food is fabulous, the drinks are excellent and the service is outstanding. Dog friendly in the summer an outdoor patio, family friendly in general but still largely a pub. NOTE: If you have a particular aversion to Irish music, bring ear plugs. Otherwise, enjoy!

I had a party for family there this weekend. We had contacted them a few wells ago. As it for closer the numbers changed, and my daughter asked to have more mingling space at the bar. All of the staff who talked with us, problem solved and listened were so accommodating. I was surprised at flexibility and humor. They have lovely all-ages friendly Irish musicians on Sunday eve, it was so much fun! We ended up in a nice room upstairs, could handle 50 +people. Our server Rich was friendly, timely, and always there when we needed anything. He had just the right suggestions for us. All in all, Chief ONeil's has a great irish neighborhood bar feel with beautiful themed decorations, nice beer selections and good food. Best of all- the warm attention. We will be back!

Took the family here, the kids loved it.we enjoyed the food.kids both had the Shepards pie,I had fish and chips.my girlfriend had clams, all dished were well made. Really good beer selection as well.we will be back!!!!

We arrived on time for our reservation, our table was not ready and on top that, they started setting the table outside all the way to an isolate corner, like if we were infested. The reservation was clearly done for an inside sitting; the Hostess was not very pleased at us. We had to wait about ten minutes for them to set the table. We later found out they had a reservation for a Baby Shower outside and the party changed their minds and moved their party inside. The food was good; many dishes kind of cold for that kind of money. Coffee was not refilled often. Need to place the name of each dish in front. Dessert was good, no utensils handy to grab dessert. Probably need to arrive as soon as they open to grab warm food. I will give it another try but early.

Chief O'Neill's is the first place we bring out of town guests who enjoy good food in a charming pub-like atmosphere. The Sunday brunch cannot be beat for value ($20 per adult). We have been 4 times now and have found the food quality to be consistently good. I love the Cheddar Cheese & Guiness soup with bits of carrot. The chocolate fountain with fresh fruits for dipping is a really nice touch. The cold salmon is excellent. There's always corned beef and ham sliced to order. You can work your way through biscuits and gravy, tea cakes, sweet rolls, fried calamari (in an Irish Pub?!), and more dishes than I can remember. This is NOT a place to go if you're on a diet. The service is unfailingly friendly and attentive. We've sat outside in the charming garden and inside as well. On Sundays, the place is packed - with families, children, as well as couples. Being of Irish descent and a life-long Chicagoan, I truly enjoy seeing Chief O'Neill's uniform and an Irish step-dancer's costume, along with posters from Ireland. During the week, and Sunday evenings, apparently there's live entertainment. If you plan to go for brunch, make a reservation.

Food grand , beer ok , music terrific , enjoyed one of the best session of Irish music ever , John Doyle joined by John Williams a night to remember.

Great little neighborhood pub. Food was great, staff was helpful and friendly. Traditional Irish Music. Loved it when an elderly gentleman walked in the door with his small case, pulled up a chair and joined the musicians.

My wife and I have come here many many times for brunch. Nice family owned business. During Spring and Summer awesome outdoor area. Also, have a nice party room on the second floor.

While the service and atmosphere were okay, the food was the worst that I've had in a very long time. The appetizer(mussels) smelled like sewer and the main course(Steak) tasted like the meat was rotten. I was not able to get more that a bite of both dishes. I really don't understand how a place can serve food this bad and still stay open for business
One great one poor experience.
Visited last summer and had a great meal and experience. It was a 180 in October. Both times took my wife ,son, daughter-in-law and 2 young grandchildren. First time excellent food and service this time very good food and horrible service. We finished our salads and ordered a second round of drinks and 45 minutes later had to get the manager to "find" our drinks. We were taking the last bites of our meals before drinks came. No water was on the table. Try eating pot roast with nothing to wash it down. Manager said the drinks would be compt, but were on the bill. I paid the full bill and mentioned the drinks were paid for and she apologized but made no effort to correct the bill. Also kids meals are $12. We have a 2 and a 4 year old. $24 for kids meals! Will read details carefully next time. Funny thing...visiting from Myrtle Beach we couldn't wait to go back.
