Get the shrimp and spinach dim sum unless you hate shrimp or spinach. So good and So cheap. Every thing we had, beef pancake, lamb noodles stir fried, lamb noodles in soup was good, huge portions and cheap.By sharing your experiences, you're helping travelers make better choices and plan their dream trips. Thank you!

Best Beef Pancakes

By marinpartyof4 |

Beef Pancakes are yummy......thin crepes wrapped around thin slices of beef and pan fried til outside are crispy. Tried many places, but these are the best. Very crowded during evening and weekends.....go on a weekday.

Breakfast, No! Great and Reasonable Food? Yes!

By B_Pope |

This is NOT a breakfast place, so if the picture still shows American breakfast pancakes, disregard! What House of Pancakes does offer is traditional chinese (savory) pancakes and noodle soups at a price that's unusually reasonable for the city. We shared beef pancakes and noodle soup with tea for about $20. The food is tasty, filling, and comforting on a cold day. You can also get a floor show of sorts, if you sit in the right place, looking back into the kitchen, where noodles are being hand-pulled by the cooks. You will likely be seated with strangers in this hole-in-the-wall just off 19th Avenue (Highway 1), but that's part of the charm too. They take cash only; no credit cards or checks, but there are at least four ATM's within a block of the restaurant. This place will, I'm sure, be a San Francisco craving for us.

Small place, big food!

By Anne N |

This is a very small, hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant. . . . but, it is a very busy place. You need to open the front door and write your name on the "waiting list." While we were waiting outside, we noticed that the window had a "92" rating for cleanliness. The pancakes are not the traditional American breakfast pancakes, but the Chinese pancakes. There are a variety of pancakes to choose from, and we tried the green onion ones, but will definitely try a meat pancake the next time. A bowl of rib noodles (hand rolled) with spinach is enough for 2 big eaters. As a matter of fact, we had ordered shrimp dumplings and had to bring them home because we were so full. There's a whole small shrimp in each -- not chopped up! This restaurant was recommended by our Chinese friend, so we felt confident that the food would be great. It WAS!

Excellent

By Go2theZoo |

We were brough here by family members who live in the area. We have never had Chinese pancakes before and they were amazing. Since we didn't order, I'm not completely sure what we got, but there were two types of dumplings. One was lamb, and I liked it better than the other one, which I think was beef. The hand pulled noodles were amazing. There was also a cold beef dish that I didn't care for. You have to specifically ask for water or they won't bring it. When we did ask, we were brought baby size glasses with no ice. The staff was very friendly. This is literally a hole in the wall, very small and cramped, but the food is delicious.

Great Chinese comfort food

Great hole in wall serving up Taiwanese \ northern Chinese dishes. Pancakes and noodles are their specialty. Grilled oysters too. Often a wait but worth the effort. Closed on Wednesday.

Asian pancaked

By BPenuliar2015 |

First of all, this place serves Asian pancakes - not American pancakes like IHOP. Not that we’ve cleared that, pancakes are their specialty. We ordered the onion pancakes and the shrimp and chive dumplings and they were both good. We went there for lunch on a Thursday and there was no line. The place is not big so I can just imagine the line on the weekends. Cash only!

Incredible!!! A must try in SF.

This place is incredible!! A must try in SF. Tried the Mustard Greens and Pork Hand Pulled Noodle soup, incredible. Also got the very popular Beef Roll and it too is out of this world!!!! I'll be back soon

Delicious and Affordable

By Wendy D |

Noodles and lamb, pancakes with beef, yummy garlicky eggplant (my fave), pork dumplings, and another type of sesame pancakes with beef. Fragrant tea. It was all so delicious and served four of us with quite a bit to take home for leftovers. The total was $55 including tax and tip---amazing value!!!! Go early or expect to wait in line.

People are puzzled when I say to go here but it's not IHOP

If you want hand pulled noodles made on the premises in the special bean sauce, savory pancakes (get the egg or house special beef), a half dozen different types of dumplings (lamb/chives, lamb/cabbage, pork/chives) and my favorite cucumber salad and tofu with Malian vegetable (compressed, marinated tofu minced into small pieces and tossed in a sesame oil dressing with a salty/dried green vegetable (also minced) come here. My daughter and daughter-in-law have now added this to the restaurants they have to eat at when they visit SF from NY (along with Zuni Cafe for oysters and Caesar salad and Dragon Beaux for dim sum).

Hearty Northern Chinese Dishes

By FancyAsFi |

This was our first time trying House of Pancakes, and let’s just say—the name is definitely misleading in the best way. While you might expect a traditional breakfast spot, this cozy, mom-and-pop-style restaurant serves up hearty Northern Chinese dishes packed with flavor. We came with a large group of extended family and were impressed with how accommodating and friendly the staff were. They even made thoughtful dish recommendations based on our group size and preferences, which made the experience even better. We ordered quite a bit to share: Beef Pancakes (a house specialty) Lamb Skewers (spicy and non-spicy) Lamb Dumplings Pork Dumplings Lamb Stir-Fried Hand-Pulled Noodles Fresh Cucumber Salad Overall, the food was delicious and flavorful. That said, if you're not a fan of lamb (like me), just be aware that the lamb skewers and dumplings can be a bit gamey. The spicy skewers helped mask it a bit, thanks to a generous sprinkle of paprika. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the lamb stir-fried noodles—the lamb in that dish was melt-in-your-mouth tender and tasted more like beef than lamb to me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t try the beef pancakes due to dietary restrictions, but my cousins absolutely loved them and said they were a must-order. The pork dumplings were a standout for me—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. And the cucumber salad was refreshing and balanced everything out nicely. The restaurant has a small, casual diner vibe that gives it local charm—nothing fancy, but welcoming and perfect for sharing a flavorful meal with family or friends.

Soooooooo good!

Total little hole in the wall - right off the L Taravel line. Amazing food- unbelievable pulled noodles and the beef pancakes are to die for! Cash only and there are only about 10 tables so you probaly have to wait for a table- came on a weeknight and even though it was busy we didn't have to wait. Best Chinese food ever!

Fantastic fresh house-made noodles and pancakes.

Delicious fresh house-made noodles and pancakes, dumplings and potstickers, Inexpensive, small, clean. The beef roll pancake is really good. All the dumplings are good, but my favorite is the shrimp dumpling with spinach. I want to return!

The Best!!

By Andreea |

I couldn't believe the reviews, but they were right!! It is the best place ever with the best, most delicious, most affordable Chinese food!! It is worth the wait!! Small, packed place, but very friendly and familiar. As usual, huge portions and very, very tasty meals!

Awesome Everything

Little whole in wall spot with no frills, friendly staff and really awesome food. Everything on the menu is fantastic. Highlights are cucumber salad, beef roll pancake, eggplant, soy beans noodles and all the dumplings. Will be back again and again.

Authentic northern china dumplings and more

By C David A |

The best beef sesame pancakes I have ever had (trust me - I grew up eating this stuff)! The pancakes are baked to a perfection, crispy and fluffy. Yum! You can tell their dumplings have hand-rolled dough skin, just the right thickness. Good string beans, and very spicy oil fish fillet round up a satisfying meal. This is a small and informal place (cash only), but if you haven't been to a pure northern Chinese restaurant, this is the place to try it! Their phone is 415-681-8388.

Outstanding without pretentiousness

By myrna415 |

This tiny place in the avenues is always packed, but service is friendly and efficient. Their specialty is hand pulled noodles and Chinese pancakes (these are savory). Everything here is delicious. It is like Mission Chinese without the pretension. Family owned, totally bare walls. I recommend any of the hand pulled noodle dishes, which come with scissors to cut the long strands of noodles. The texture is just so different and delicious! Worth the trip, and totally accessible on MUNI.

Worth the wait

By stracq |

In from NJ staying in Sunset area and found restaurant via Google maps. Good reviews so we decided to try it. Waiting list with 10 parties ahead of us but we went down the street and had a beer at Irish pub. You can check your table status online and we watched our number come up. Maybe 30 min or one beer wait. The pancakes were amazing along with noodles and dumplings. We took home enough leftovers for 2 more meals. Go there. You won't be sorry

Delicious food for good prices

By Hani Nguyenova |

My favorite Chinese place in SF! The food is so delicious, cheap and big portions at the same time! That's a WIN-WIN situation!! The customer service is very friendly too. We ordered: Beef Roll Pancake - The meat melts in your mouth! It is so GOOD. The sauce inside the pancake is sweet but adds great flavor to the whole dish. 5/5 Egg Roll Pancake - If you are an egg lover, you will like this pancake a lot! It has the same sweet sauce as the Beef Roll Pancake. 5/5 Beef Hand Pull Noodle (soup) - This is my favorite dish! The noodles have great texture and taste. The broth is very rich, and the meat is tender. This is a MUST HAVE for this place. 5/5 Pork Dumpling w/ chives - 5/5 Overall, I love this place. I've been coming here for 3 years now, and it has never disappointed me.

Fantastic hole in the wall

By OBIE1_13 |

This place is small, so if your timing is off and you get there late during lunch or dinner, you may be waiting outside in fog or cold breeze, so be sure to have your jacket dependent on the weather. The wait is worth it in my view. The owners are very positive, friendly, happy couple always smiling - especially the husband. They don't have the space to do large groups, so if too many you may need to split up in to smaller groups. Also, they are CASH ONLY, so be sure you have enough cash. Others have written about the food. Their portion sizes are perfect, not too small and priced reasonably. I've enjoyed more than half their menu and enjoyed most dishes, with their beef rolled pancake, dumplings, noodle soup all great.

I'll be back!

It's been a while since I had Chinese pancakes and this place hit the spot. I also had the master greens with pork and pulled noodle soup (tasty and fresh). The spicy fish was also a good one, as it had that mild spice that builds to hot, perfect with rice! Would like to come back to try the dumplings

Luncheon

By Pricilla C |

This is a nice place for a couple to have light lunch. They have variety of noodle soup including hand pulled type. Noodle texture is pretty good. It serves in a large bowl and 2 people can share. We ordered hand pulled noodle soup and the sesame beef roll. We couldn't even finish it. The price is reasonable.

Ridiculously good!!!

By ChefBoy1da |

Tiny little hole in the wall with some of the best Chinese in the city. All of the dumplings are awesome as well as the dry noodles with minced pork and beans curd, beef roll pancake, cucumber salad, and pretty much the entire menu. It's small so there is sometimes a wait but it's well worth it.

Best anywhere
