Great Food and Environment

By calderon2370 |

Went here with my sister who was visiting and some friends. We had a great time, the food was excellent and the drinks were on point. The staff there was also very friendly and helpful. I left there very satisfied and "a little tipsy" LOL. I will definitely visit again in the near future.

Great tacos

By Marcy A |

Had a fabulous pork taco with pineapples and slaw. Disappointed in the happy hour drinks. Margarita was "draft style" so it tastes like there was Sprite in it and it was carbonated. Tried the frozen and it was bad as well. YUCK! The sangria was also gross and was returned. Have to stick with beer or liquor here. Would go back and try more on the menu.

Horrible place to eat

By Metro B |

I went in with positivity and recieved nothing but rude bartender and host also undercooked food. dont waste your time here.

It was so good I came back next day

By TexKeystone |

In town for a convention and craving great TexMex, I found it here. I slipped away from the convention center and loved it so much I came back for dinner the following night and brought 18 people. We had no reservations, it was a Friday night, and the host still made room for us. Service was 5 star and so was the food. Tacos, enchiladas, queso, guacamole.... We had it all and it was delicious. I need a reason to go back to Austin so I can return to this little cantina.

Excellent Food and Beer

By Mandatha |

Great place! They have an amazing selection of local craft draft beer. The tacos were also awesome. I had the honey jalapeno chicken taco and the chipotle orange brisket taco. They were huge and I didn't get anywhere near finishing them. I went for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty slow but it seems like they might get a rowdier crowd in the evening.

Favorite Spot To Grab Dinner On 6th Street

By Adieuu |

I've been to Chuapacabra twice now while in Austin for dinner. Both times we ordered and got our food/drinks in less than 20 minutes. The staff is laid-back and friendly just like the atmosphere. It has never been too crowded which is nice when you want to grab something quick on 6th street. The food is excellent and the blackberry margarita is awesome (love the $3 happy hour specials). There are plenty of TV's to watch whatever big game is on and the music played is great and enjoyable. The only downside is the bathrooms...cramped, dingy and it was really dark making it pretty hard to see. I will definitely continue to visit Chupacabra each time I come to Austin to visit.

Great food and atmosphere

If you come as a small table expect a wait. They show all the major sports and have a great bar. Food is excellent!

Orange chipotle brisket taco!

By AJ Travels |

This is one fun little Cantina. I had the orange chipotle brisket taco and the Baja taco plus some chips with guacamole. The Baja taco, which comes with your choice of grilled or fried fish (I had grilled), was delicious. But I wouldn't go out of my way for one. But the brisket is worth the visit! So tender with perfect seasoning (not very spicy) and a citrus flavor that doesn't get lost in the spice. The perfect balance of sweet and spicy with rajas, pineapple pico, salty cotija cheese and habanero sour cream. I will warn you that it's nearly impossible to pick up and eat as it falls apart quickly. Messy. A fork is your friend, here. As for the chips and guac: the guac is yum and the chips are fine, but not homemade. The music is up loud, so it's a little hard to enjoy conversation. All in all, a return trip to Austin would definitely include a repeat visit to Chupacabra. Next time, though, I'll order one taco instead of two. They may come on a small tortilla but they are stuffed to the max!

Best Tacos Ever

By SeeJimmi |

We went to Chupacabra last year when we were in town and decided to go back this trip. We were not disappointed. The fried chicken, bacon, honey, jalapeño tacos are unbelievable. The mix of flavored is strange but delusions. The guacamole, chips, salsa and rice and beans are also great. The service is fast and friendly. Great spot for dinner and a drink!

Worst "service" I have had in 30 years

By Stefan S |

Came to Chupacabra Cantina with two friends for dinner around 8:30pm. Upon entering we asked the bartender if the kitchen was open and he responded mockingly along the lines of "why wouldn't it be". Then we asked if we were allowed to just take any seat and he responded "if you want to". Not a great attitude, but we sat down. No table service (not an issue), so I walked up to the bar with our order and asked the same bartender if we could put in a food order with him. I got another snarky response, which I ignored. I put in my order and gave my credit card to pay. It got declined. I tried two more credit cards and both were declined as well (despite me having paid with these cards in multiple other establishments in the previous two days). I said I'd go to ask one of my friends to pay and his response was that he would keep my card while I did that (clearly implying that he wanted to make sure I wouldn't leave without paying). Mind you, the order had not even been placed at this point. I asked to get my card back and he refused and said I needed to find a way to pay before he would give it back. It took several minutes of back and forth where he implied my party were thieves before I asked him to cancel my order and give me my card back. At that point he had no issue handing it back and my friends and I left to the establishment across the street which was a pleasant experience I've never in my life had a customer service rep at an establishment in the US treat me this poorly or suggest I was going to dine and dash without any reason whatsoever. It didn't even make sense to keep my card hostage when the food had not even been prepared yet. For the manager/owner of this place, you should have a serious conversation with the bartender active on Sunday evening Jan 2nd. In the 10 minutes we were there we weren't the only customers he was rude to. Besides the credit card issue he was making it seem like he was doing everyone a big favor by being there.

Food was good but the restaurant smells funny.

By Lisa S |

My adult daughter and I had a nice lunch here and the service was good. It was unfortunate we were there while they were cleaning out the cooler with the shop vac. It smelled of bleach and something bad but it wasn't overwhelming. N

Great drink specials and good food

By M_Tucker28 |

Stopped in here on a Wednesday night which was good because it was "whiskey Wednesday" meaning $3 Jameson. It's located right on the main strip. Being a Wednesday night there weren't many people but the bar staff was attentive and friendly. I had the barbacoa enchiladas which were amazing and filling. Didn't get to try the tacos but next time I'm in Austin I definitely will. Definitely recommend this place.

Tacos and beer

By akhill |

This is a reasonably pleasant bar on Dirty 6th, which also serves tasty, inexpensive and quick tacos. Perfect for a quick bite to start a night out.

great food and drinks

By TheReviewer16 |

Great food in a town full of it, excellent atmosphere as well. We enjoyed happy hour special of a pitcher of sweet tea vodka drinks...yum. Fish tacos were perfect. Salsa delicious, generous portion, reasonable prices..ate here twice!

A great lunch spot

By scsams |

Stoped for a delightful lunch of garden enchiladas. Great service and drinks. The salsa was very tasty.

Great Tex-Mex

By jlkauffman |

This is a great place to get some fantastic Tex-Mex food before bar hopping on sixth street. Don't come here if you're really hungry or otherwise unwilling to wait for a bit, though. The service is rather slow but, at least in this reviewer's opinion, is worth the wait. Also, (though I think this is probably a given) this place is not for people who don't like spicy food.

Great chicken taco and good service

By Jean T |

Happy hour specials - can't go wrong. Nice bartender, more tequilla then I have ever seen in one place.

Wonderful

By TRKJKY |

Had a great lunch at this little hole in the wall place. Food was amazing and service was excellent....

Tacos & Beer!!

By Josue C |

On my first night walking downtown Austin I came upon the Chupacabra Cantina and just had go in and see what it was all about. Am kinda glad I went cause they had good local beers and great tasting fish taco. The menu is full of some good taco creations at a great price. The decor is funky full very Austin. Finding parking is tough but its worth the walk. It's great place for a date or just to hang for tacos & beers. I totally recommend Chupacabra Cantina to anybody going to Austin, I will return.

Good choice for Mexcian

By LS_GoingPlaces |

First night in Austin, our Lyft driver recommended this place. We sat outside and enjoyed the breeze with our margaritas (happy hour value that our waitress pointed out). We had the chicken burrito and the fish taco with rice and beans and an order of homemade guacamole and chops. Good to large portion sizes, fresh ingredients and super friendly staff. The food and drinks were served in record time which made it nice. The only negative was the location - if you sit outside, the patio faces an alley and there are a lot of homeless people that walk around. We were asked for money by a few of them. It would be good if that could be corrected somehow. Otherwise a good choice and very reasonably priced for the food, portion size and service.

Great Margaritas and friendly staff

By Michelle H |

We stopped in for a drink and a snack, chips and salsa and margaritas. Drinks were great and the waitstaff are lovely and friendly. They were very helpful with recommendations for nightlife and shopping.

Average

By Daphne |

I had the grilled portabella taco with rice and beans. The food was okay. Good portion for the price. The staff was friendly but it seemed to the forever for us to get our food.

great food stand

By Wigs8 |

I didn't visit the restaurant itself, but only the hot dog stand that is setup outside and serves late night food for the bar scene on 6th Street. since their stand doesn't have it's own listing I thought it best to review here. I had the "Diablo" which is a hot dog topped with bacon, cheese, jalepenos and spicy chipotle mayo. It was fantastic and really hit the spot after a night out drinking. It was loaded with the toppings, but still easy enough to eat while walking back to our hotel... in other words it was a perfect street food item. my only regret is that we weren't able to visit the actual restaurant.

Fantastic tortillas!

By Quouar |

I was wandering around looking for food when I found this place and it's excellent Taco Tuesday (buy two tacos for the price of one). Beyond the interesting combinations, the tortillas are fantastic, and the service was really helpful. I also love the atmosphere. You can look out on 6th st, but also enjoy the art inside. I'll definitely be coming back more often!

Average mexican, not my first choice

By LindseyLanoue |

The food is good, but there is much better in the downtown area. I love Iron Cactus, but still, there are plenty of other places I would choose for Mexican.

We stumbled across this place and was not disappointed. Great food!

By Kathy R |

We went on a rainy Sunday and decided to get out of the rain and get some lunch, we were pleasantly surprised, food was very good. the only thing I didn't like was the honey chicken taco was breaded and fried. I thought it was abit over priced for what you get, but I would go back again!

Great Food!

By Cara C |

Stumbled on Chupacabra by accident, but glad I did! Great service and food- hit the spot for my Tex Mex craving! The salsa and queso were so good, I couldn't stop! Ordered two different tacos- ask the staff for recommendations - they smoke their own meats! They're not small portions, either.

1st Stop..The Chupa

By J_n_G_n_AZ |

Chupa was our first stop in Austin. We dropped our bags at the hotel and hoofed it up to 6th St. Here we had some pretty decent bar fare. I had the Chupacabra taco. Pretty tasty. Good selection of beers on tap and an excellent view of the side show that is 6th Street. It was too early for a lot of Austinites, so we pretty had the place to ourselves. However, maybe the best part of this place was Amanda our server. Since she wasn't terribly busy we had a great opportunity to get some tips from her on where to visit while in Austin. This place gets 4 stars because the food was better than average and the service was great.

Great food at a great price

By Laura H |

After just arriving in Austin we went for a walk down 6th street and stopped in for dinner! What an amazing experience we had excellent service and the meals were massive and tasted amazing! Best mex we have had since being in America by far! The margaritas were yum also and were cheap! We rate this place it was awesome

Average at best

By melannstephenson |

I was very disappointed by the food here. It was not very good quality. I would not recommend. One positive is its right on 6th street.

Lunch

By Quen W |

Chips and salad was good. Corn tortillas were very good. We recommend the chicken. Plenty to share for two. Received black beans and rice. The rice is a little spicy. IPA beer and margaritas are good. Good music. Good corner location to spend some time checking out downtown Austin.

Restaurants

By 133clementec |

While staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Austin we had the opportunity to visit some of the restaurants in the area. The one we considered best was the YTex-Mex Chupacabra Cantina. The food was excellent and the price was very good. The staff was very impressive and the waiting time was minimum. I will reccommend this restaurant while staying in Austin.

Was going to eat here.

By Lori D |

We were going to eat here but when my daughter had to potty they told us no, not unless we bought something. We will never eat here. Unbelievable to refuse a child that's about to wet her pants.

Amazing food and service!!

By Mary O |

Best tacos ever! Great Rita's and music. A must see for 6h Street! Very friendly staff and atmosphere is welcoming and funky.

Bad attitude

By Derek T |

The young guy with the beard has a seriously bad attitude - for that reason alone this place gets one star and I for one won't be returning. Having being snapped at and having a menu snatched out of my hand when I asked if I could grab a table (having being there the day before and being told to "grab a table"...) is certainly not going to get me spending my money. Shame as on previous visits the staff appeared friendly and the food ok. However the guy with the beard is losing this place customers.

Excellent Tacos!!

By matthewsp11 |

The tacos were the best that I have ever had.... Beer was great! Sat outside during all 3 of my visits during my stay in Austin... Fun atmosphere!

Great tacos on 6th

By 770anthonyr |

After a doing some bar hopping on 6th St, my friends and I noticed we were hungry. We saw a small line coming out of this place and assumed it had to be good. We were right. We ate taco after taco at this place and each taco was better than the last. My favorite was their Yucatan and their Kimchi a close second. We had amazing service and the drink's weren't bad as well. If you see the place, stop immediately

good fun and good value

By Pucci D |

good fun, interesting cocktails, open long hours, good value - maybe not the best restaurant ever but definitely good.

Meh

By Criz66 |

Yes, cool statue but not my scene. Music too loud, just didn’t get a good vibe. Pretty much walked in and walked right back out

Great Southwestern food in Downtown Bar setting

By TIM B |

Stopped in for Lunch at this 6th Street Bar. Nice staff and great Beer selections. The food was very good and got huge portions for very reasonable lunch prices. Bartender was very nice and several TV's to watch. Building is older and had Restuarant had slight odors from the heavy F1 weekend partying from the night before, but a good cleaning should take care of that. The place does have open doors, so it is possible for insects, etc. to get in.

Great Tastes

By Jeff J |

We were greeted promptly by very friendly service staff at this casual restaurant featuring tacos and other tex-mex fare. We started the meal with an order of guacamole and chips (which also comes with the house salsa), accompanied by one of the reasonable variety of local beers on tap. The beer was very good, and I couldn't get enough of the salsa. Spicy and flavorful with a nice Chipotle/smoke overtone to it. The guacamole, on the other hand, I was not as fond of. It came in a respectable serving size, but the avocado had been "cut" with something that smoothed it out, made it go further, and diluted the flavor. Skip the guacamole and use your money for an extra helping of their salsa. For our entrees, we each ordered tacos: brisket, fish, and veggie. All were good, though I found my fish taco (aka the "Baja") to be somewhat bland. By contrast, the brisket taco was an explosion of flavors that I couldn't get enough of. Delicious with nice complementary flavors from the other ingredients on the taco. I was too full to sample my wife's tacos, but she said that the veggie were very, very good. The tacos are as messy as they are delicious, and I salute the good people at Chupacabra for including not one but two napkins with the standard place setting. Foresighted and efficient! The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable, and the tacos are delicious. I would certainly come again (but skip the guacamole next time).

Good value

By Andrew A |

We had some Mexican food and a couple of drinks at Chupacabra Cantina. The food was snack type Mexican and tasty. This place is good vale for the money. Nice crowd too.

Fun and interesting food, great service

By Kent P |

I visited Austin a bit over a month ago, not really knowing the city. A friend who'd been to there had suggested Chupacabra as a possible destination. It's a bar, and I don't drink, but the web said they had some interesting salads and so I figured I'd give them a shot. It's nice to have a place to start in a strange town. The Chupa salad was large, tasty, and satisfying. The entire staff -- Daisy, Brian, and several others I fear I didn't get the names of -- were very warm and welcoming. I ended up returning more than once during my stay, including for Sunday brunch which had a different menu with some interestingly different items that expressed local culture nicely. I brought home a t-shirt, and if I get back to town I'll definitely return.

Delicious tacos, great service

By Carrie M |

My boyfriend and I happened across this downtown pub after we visited the Museum of Weird just a few doors down. The service was amazing, the waiter made many suggestions for our first visit. We split several tacos, an order of rice and beans, and a queso dip. We both had a craft beer, an IPA and a wheat. Lunch cost us about $40 in all. Well worth the price. In fact, it was WAY too much food. I believe we could have skipped the rice and queso (not that they weren't fantastic) and grabbed a few more of those delicious beers. :) Next time.

Late Sunday lunch

By lmc2003 |

The service was great. Food was good. I went with the grilled fish tacos and my husband had a steak burrito. My tacos were good and the mixture of the pineapple salsa with the tangy mayo was good. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. The music was a bit loud but i think that is intended.

Good Unique Menu

By Vince C |

I like the burgers - they try to make them unique, and different. Taste real good. Fun atmosphere. Would like to come down some evening.

Queso crack

By mayjal |

Got the queso dip and tacos. I must say they have some of the best queso i have ever had! The tacos were fresh. I would avoid the chicken tender taco. But the burrito was huge as really good after it was smothered in the queso sauce!

Dive Bar With Get Food = Awesome!

By FoodfanUSA |

OK any pretensious sorts, this is a bar, or dive Bar if you like, where they serve beer and great drinks, with good music, atmosphere, and attentive and friendly servers. The food is pub grup but very, very good. If you like Buffalo Wings, their sauce is exceptional, and coupled with the place across the street, and you are in Buffalo Chicken Wing heaven in Texas! Try their Chile which is made with real meat and just the right spice. One of my faves any day and any time. Oh, and make sure you try at least one Helldorado!

Didn't know I was in for great tacos.

By Christopher H |

Have you ever seen the cartoon where the dog get's a treat, hugs himself, making yummy sounds and shoots into the air to float down in satisfaction? I mentally did that here when I had their tacos. I had the Honey Jalapeno and Brisket tacos with a Jalapeno Margarita. So very good. With so many places to eat it's tempting to skip the Chupacabra. DON'T DO IT!!!!! Go in and have a couple tacos, so yummy.

Good Food with Fun Drinks

By Wisconsinite01 |

Good southwestern good with GREAT service. The variety things on the menu, especially drinks, made it worth going back a second time. Nice amount of food for the money. First visit: Fish tacos (fried version) came with beans, rice, sides including the mandatory fish taco sauce. Portabella mushroom fajitas Ginger margarita BEST! Local craft beers! Second visit: Big Burrito with beans, smothered in queso and good stuff Pork tacos There is an outside dining area which is beautiful when the weather is nice.

average texmex food

By Cambridge783 |

Nothing to die for, it is average tex mex. the margaritas were soso. there is no highchair so it is defently not family friendly.

Fun place to grab a quick bite...

By Kristina H |

Staff was pretty cool...bar setup was good. Food was good and the prices not bad! Decent bet on "dirty" 6th as you can do a lot worse!!! That said, we did get teased a bit by locals when we said the tacos were good. Oh...and the place turns pretty hip hop after 10, so if that's not your thing you probably want to avoid.

Great Food and Drinks

By Keith H |

Party of one during the last evening of the Pecan Festival. I was promptly greeted by the hostess who answered a few quick questions I had. She was very friendly and the combination of her attitude and a unique menu led me to dine here. My drink order was delivered quickly and my server, Jenna, displayed a very good knowledge of the menu. She was efficient and attentive. The food taste was very good. I had the Pu Pu Platter. The queso was mind blowing. All of the items were served hot and the Super Chupacabra Juice that came with the platter put a spell on me. It's has a base of Ranch Dressing but is a highly evolved form of condiment. They should bottle and sell this stuff.

Good food on 6th street.

By Kelly E |

Stopped in for lunch, was pleasently surprised at the quality of the food for the price. The menu had some decent choices and was reasonably priced. Service and atmosphere was average for the area. The food tasted good and there was ample amount. This is a good place for some tex-mex downtown.

A big burrito each at the patio.

By All50 |

Me an my friend sat down one hour for a really good lunch. We were chosen the big burritos and they were big....and that super delicious. If you are hungry, try them.

Cool Statue

By Mimi5620 |

The awesome statue in the front window is what lured our group in. The doorman took some fun pictures for our group. Cool bar, friendly people and cold drinks. Good time!

Good Eats and People Watching on 6th Street

By traveltot11 |

We found this place walking down 6th street. We had our hearts set on another nearby restaurant that had a long wait. We got right in at Chupacabra, received good service and food. I had the enchiladas that had a spicy habanero sour cream sauce. I was pleasantly surprised with our experience here. We sat on the patio and the people watching was fantastic. We saw a number of people trying their best to "Keep Austin Weird." We even saw Elvis! I will certainly be back on my next Austin trip.

👍👍👍

By Dude Man |

The drinks were really tasty at the Chupacabra. I had the hibiscus margarita. I really enjoyed it. The bartenders were super nice and friendly too! Definitely has a cool atmosphere in here!

great tacos

By jim d |

The food here is always fresh and very good..love the fish tacos and their salsa is great withnchips. Good selection of beer.

Super good tacos!

By samsnorway |

Tried the two new tacos. New steak guisada very good....fried avocado super super good...I will be back. Beer was nice and cold. Bartender and every staff member was nice.

Val was very helpful. Very accommodating to a large, loud party.

By rfuchs0917 |

My sons TKD all visited this restaurant while in Austin. There were approx 20 of us! Val was very, very sweet and helpful. I ordered the steak tacos and they would have been pretty good had the steak strips been cut up AT ALL! HAHAHA My husband enjoyed his fish tacos very much. The three of us cost $36 I would likely visit this place again if I were ever in Austin.

Food

By Brett W |

Curtis the bartender was very friendly, and the tacos were delicious. Good live music as well. Highly recommended!

Green mean enchiladas

By Sadie D |

Green mean enchiladas were fantastic and the beef taco is okay. The beans and rice were very bland but the enchiladas made up for it bc they were spicy and I love spicy food. The hot sauce was great as well but the space is limited and we waited for way longer than said.

Good pub food and beer

By Spenser |

The food is well prepared and service is speedy. Don't expect gourmet meals, just quite good Tex Mex. The wait staff is pleasant and attentive. The is a canopied outdoor seating area which is good for people watching .

Yummy

By Rebekah K |

Went to watch football and have tacos and drinks on Sunday afternoon. Really good. The in house tortillas are great. Had the veggie taco, and it was amazing.

Austin Vacation

By L D J |

First stop on 6th Street during my vacation. I stopped her for margaritas. I prefer them frozen but their machine was down. I had it on the rocks and they were good. I also ordered the queso dip to snack on and it was delicious. The bartender was friendly and attentive.

Happy Hour and margs!

By 197pat13 |

Two for one tacos were tasty and a bargain during happy hour. The margs were good and the bartender friendly and efficient. The turquoise stools outside just make me happy!

Quite nice Tex-Mex fast(ish) food

By Norman W |

Was travelling alone so I was directed to sit and eat at the bar. It's not very comfortable for eating as it's high and has a large padded edge but it was OK. The service was good and there was a decent selection of beers. The food was nice enough but the plastic and cardboard plating takes away from the experience.

Amazing tacos

By Kelly Y |

So so tasty...get the chipotle honey chicken tacos!! So unique and super delicious! Will go back if ever in Austin again.

Yet another amazing meal!

By BenH989 |

This was our second visit while staying in Austin and I don't know how this place isn't slammed to the walls packed while food is being served. However we didn't eat there until after 9 pm on Saturday night, so that might be the reason. I decided to go with the goat tacos and damn they were gooooood. I have hat goat in the past and well you can tell it's goat, they just have a certain flavor to them. But they do something in the seasoning or marinating process that certain flavor is gone! The borracho beans they serve are hot as advertised, if you don't like any heat whatsoever don't order them. My wife got the burrito which was awesome, I stole a bite from her which she wasn't happy about. The habanero aioloi sauce they have there is nothing short of amazing, it's not spicy like I thought it would be. Per the usual this is a place I will recommend to anyone who asks about a place to eat at in Austin.

Great food!!!

By MRSBROBINSON |

We had to wait a bit for a seat but this place had amazing food!! The service wasn't so great - we had to look for our waiter a few times but the food made up for a it and the atmosphere was cool. Definitely worth stopping by!

Dang Good Tacos

By BlueBottleGirl |

Loved the Orange Glazed Brisket Taco and the Spicy Sweet Fried Chicken Taco. The side of refried pinto beans was a nice touch too. The atmosphere was somewhat touristy but what would one expect on 6th Street?

Disappointed!

By TexasMeetsHawaii |

I think this is a place to have drinks vs. a decent meal. Chips & Salsa were not good at all. I had a taco which was okay. They claim to have the "best homemade tortillas" which are a combination of flour & corn. They were not special by any means. My husband had a regular hamburger and the meat was dry. My son had a specialty hamburger and he liked it. The best part of the meal were the fries. My husband's order came with them; my son's did not. We were almost through with our meal before his fries were brought out. The server had only been there a few days and was not too attentive. We do not expect to be dining here again.

best tacos in town

By brad_capetown |

blown away with the insanely tasty and well served tacos! the queso was just as delicious together with their white wine sangria. happy hour was brilliant!

Cheap good food - Too many TVs

By Hermes_NL 🇳🇱 |

Had drinks and starters here, the Queso de Luxe was excellent for a low price, the Peruvian Margarita based on Pisco rather than Tequila also very nice. Pity there are so many TVs on the wall turning it mostly into a sports cafe.

Decent Tex Mex

By Steve H |

This place is small, and the menu looks good. They made a couple mistakes, and the manager stepped in to make things right. Which I applaud him for. When in town again, I'd give it a second try.

Barbacoa Tacos!

By lisa2821 |

So we went here to get the famous Jackalope Burger as featured on the Food Network because we could not get into the Jackalope Bar with our son. Our server Colin, instructed us on which burger to order and it didn't disappoint! My son claims it was the best burger ever! Colin, our server had only been there 3 days, and you would have never known it! He was awesome! Super attentive, knowledgeable of the menu, and great personality! I asked what his favorite thing on the menu was and he suggested the Barbacoa tacos. We came back the next night and ordered those. Although the Jackalope burger was amazing, (which my son ordered again) those tacos were outstanding! I highly recommend this little gem on 6th street. I will be dreaming about those tacos, and make sure you get the Baracha beans!

Pork Shoulder Tacos and if you want to make it ugly... the Tijuana Dog

By Tony L |

After a nice run of 6th Street bars, the Chupacabra is a nice little bar for a refuel. Guac rocks. For light fare, get some of their tacos (can't go wrong with the specials, I got the pork belly and was not disappointed). Now, if the tank is on E and you're running on fumes, recharge with the TJ dog. Was it really a Tijuana dog? Not in the strictest sense, but the spirit is there. And on 6th street, that's all that really matters. :-)

Good food, great service!

By Argentina R |

The food was really good, really Tex-Mex and the drinks were awesome. Next time in Austin I'll be there, definitely. But what I really like the most was the service, the person in charge of our table was really helpful, she knew the menu, she recommended really good options to order.

Good place for dinner

By TeamGumz |

We walked up and down 6th Street looking for a unique place to eat and decided on Chupacabra for the unique name and interesting atmosphere. We were served our drinks very quickly and the food was excellent. The free chips and salsa were probably the high point, but the server was great as well.

Just went in for appetisers, but it was really good.

By Laurel W |

We had their flautas and they were amazing. They had a dipping sauce that was addicting. Service was good too.

Just ok

By L122012 |

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but decided to try this place out when we were down on 6th street. It was just ok; there wast much about the place that I found to be amazing. My margarita was WAY too strong, which left me not enjoying it as much as usual. All I could taste was the tequila! Definitely needs a good cleaning, I agree with other posts!

So many other better options!

The prices are good and the happy hour is long, but the food is really only okay and the service is equally middling. As a vegetarian, it was actually surprisingly easy to find good food in Austin, but the garden enchiladas here were bland and the portions were very small. If you're just coming for the reasonably-priced and extensive list of local brews and margs, sitting on the patio is nice unless you get yelled at by a homeless man like we did. Maybe that's another reason I can't wholeheartedly recommend this place, especially when there are so many other great options on Sixth.

Great Food and Service!

By Katherine C |

We got in late for our first night in Austin. Around 9 we were looking for dinner. The barker at Maggie Mae's invited us in but when we said we were looking for food he was quick to point us to The Chupacabra Cantina. Our server was very friendly. They had buy one get one tacos which we expected to be the small tasting tacos but were in fact huge and delicious so we ended up taking half of them home. They had some great creative kinds. For meat eating the Yucatan was my favorite and my Veggie Husband tried and liked both the Portobello and Hippy tacos. I do have a suspicion that had we not been starving we would have been disappointed in the Queso. But we confirmed the tacos were tasty when they made a satisfying breakfast the next morning!

Cool place

By Caroline C |

Great decor awesome name good margaritas strawberry on rocks . Employeesarent too friendly but they are nice

Just order drinks

By realgilmoregirl |

A bartender at a bar down the street recommended we eat here. The atmosphere is very cool and the staff was very friendly. We had happy hour drinks--my man had a $2 Modelo and I had a $3 sangria. We ordered the hippy tacos with beans and rice. I took one bite of my taco and it wasn't good. My boyfriend's taco smelled bad so he wouldn't even bite into his. I thought the decried beans were really good though. Our waiter was very friendly and he did a great job. The bar was beautiful and the art work was very cool. Great place for happy hour.

Meh

By BrittaJT |

Unfortunately, the chips and salsa at the start of the meal were the best part. Its a cool spot right in the middle of the SX action, but unfortunately it just doesn't live up to the rest of the food we had in austin.

On a Steel Tray

By Mark B |

They'Ve stopped doing their great lunch specials. I can deal with that. What irked me were two things. First, I sat at the bar and was ignored by the bartender as she was doing something on her cell phone. I guess paying attention to what's going on at work is fairly low on her list of things to do. So I took a table instead. I ordered the pork enchiladas which were very good. What put me off was the presentation. My meal came on a steel tray. Did the "chef" graduate from the culinary arts program at a Texas prison? It was pathetic. I know it's a small thing. I am a bit of a gourmand and I like my meals to be tasty and pleasantly presented. $20 for a beer and a meal is a little much. When they offered lunch specials I could order the same items and get a check for about $11. New owners? I don't know. I did notice that there were not as many people at lunch. Do yourself a favor and go to Chipotle on Congress.

Best Mexican Food Ever

By WML333 |

I had the red burritos and crunchy taco. The sauce on the burritos was the best thing I've ever tasted. I could of ate those burritos all night long. You also have to try their Chupacabra Beer.

Random

By Justin M |

This is random place. We visited around 10pm for some food/drink - we weren't allowed to sit on the tables as the place was 'turning into a club' - although that never happened and then others were permitted to sit down? The bartender acted as if he was the Master of Beer and refused to actually list the beers on draft, rather making a selection for me...the food was actually above average...I would not return

Good food for good prices

By jenmalonetn |

This restaurant was near my hotel and had a nice happy hour with $5 margaritas and half-price tacos. The pork belly taco is sublime. The patio outside is a nice place to wind down and enjoy people watching on 6th Street.

Superb tacos!

By Evan W |

Loved the tacos and cool beer on tap. I had one each of the brisket, steak and honey fried chicken (which was my favorite) tacos. The bartender could have been a bit more attentive/conversational but that did not detract from my experience.

HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT

By jpphoustontx |

I kid you not, this is beyond one of the worst experiences I have ever experienced at a place of business. On Oct 31st, 2018. I was assaulted, and discriminated by 4 of this businesses bartender staff. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BAR. IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!! Management does not care enough to follow up or appropriately investigate the situation. I had never been to this bar and within 15 minutes of me being there I get assaulted and NO DRINK! So sad!!!

Tacos at the Chupacabra

By AnnSellsFinerHomes |

This restaurant was conveniently located. It is more of a bar than a restaurant in style. I ordered chicken tacos. They were good but nothing outstanding.

pretty good

By Mlleron |

are here during sxsw last week. the tacos are great and huge- chicken and al pastor really good, fish not so much. Service is a little taciturn, but it is a bar. Real preference is given to locals- not really a complaint but be aware if the bartender breaks off in the middle of you ordering to catch up with a friend.

Good Food; Good Happy Hour

By MattB |

Cheap frozen margaritas and cheap domestic and import beer during Happy Hour. Had multiple apps, and they were fine- nachos, wings, guac- all fresh and tasty. Good enough that we went twice in three days. Located on 6th St.

Great happy hour!!

By Robert K |

We went in there for a drink after sightseeing. very friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks for city centre. We have decided to coma back and have soon food and tried HH! Good decision it was. Superb tacos, chicken, fish.and amazing white sangria (to share) but I've decided not to! Share of course😂! Next time in Austin will pop in again, only downside the toilet is a bit scruffy!

Just Okay...

By Laurie W |

Stopped in with a friend for lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't busy and service was quick. Ordered the chips and gauc appetizer hoping for some good homemade tortilla chips. No such luck. Chips were standard grocery store bag chips. My friend is vegetarian and she was able to find good options. I had the Yucatán taco which was good enough but I wouldn't go back.

Great tacos!

By Tetoncat |

Great food...reasonable prices. Service was very good. I would definitely do it again! More of a bar than a restaurant...if you are looking for a nice sit down restaurant this is not it.

Service great, food awful.

By Kesha G |

Came here on a mini-vacay to Austin. Service was amazing; the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food... was just awful. The queso-chicken mix we had for an appetizer was greasy and the cheese tasted like a water down version of the nacho cheese you would have at a carnival. My grilled fish taco was seasoned poorly and placed on a hard tortilla. The rice and beans that came with my taco weren't impressive either. Very disappointing for a restaurant in this area. Buttttt our waiter, Dylan was sweet is pie :) and very helpful in finding the best the menu had to offer.

good choice on 6th Avenue/Pecan

By bettibiz |

The best Mexican food we had in a week in Texas! I had a quesadilla and my mom had the jalapeno poppers – you’ve never had them until you’ve had them here. It looks like “just” a bar, but this was definitely great food. Good service, reasonable prices – worth the stop when you’re looking for food on 6th Ave.

Good food

By Jeff G |

This is a neat atmosphere on 6th Street and the food is pretty good. We had several people with us and we all got several items to try. The tacos are good and the spices in the rice and beans give it a little extra good kick. I would recommend this to anyone looking for some decent food at a good price.

Great tacos

By susanw452 |

Delicious tacos! I had the pork belly (I skipped the ghost chile aioli.) and the Yucatan: Adobo smoked pork, Jack cheese, Jicama slaw and pineapple pico (I skipped the spicy salsa verde.) My dinner buddy said her (vegetarian) "Hippy Tacos" were great. Small but creative drink menu, too.

nice place in the heart of 6th street

By tallica21 |

Nice food and drinks with a great atmosphere. There are so many choices on 6th street to stop at, so we just picked this one. I will update on others when we check them out. They did have some unique items on the menu.

Best tacos and great drinks

By John S |

This place is amazing. Seems like a plain old bar, but before they turn it into a nightclub (around 10:00 or so) the food is amazing. Had the chipotle taco and the Pork belly taco - both were crazy good. Started with chips and salsa, salsa was great. Then asked for some guacamole, it came with jalapeño, onion and tomato. It was good. THe rice was good and the black beans were great. But the tacos were absolutely wonderful, will go back for more. The Cadillac margarita was good (I had a taste of my wife's drink). I had a bottle of Carta Blanca- they don't serve that many places outside of Mexico. Waiter was quick with recommendations and the place had a cool vibe - not pretentious, but confident.

Good Choice

By Dan M |

Typical bar, but nice. Service was very good as was the food. A good choice anytime of the day. It apparently gets very busy at night.

Taco Tuesday!

By JasonandPatricia |

After a fun day of sightseeing in Austin we decided to check out 6th street. After a walkabout, we got hungry and decided to stop into Chupacabra Cantina for dinner. The place was packed, but we were seated quickly. Our hostess and waitress were both very friendly and attentive. Our waitress informed us that it was Taco Tuesday where we could buy one taco and get the second free. We both ordered two tacos each and a basket of chips and salsa. The tacos were excellent and had just the right amount of kick! I ordered a beer and my girlfriend got a frozen margarita during the happy hour. I definitely recommend this place for anyone that wants some awesome tacos on 6th street!

Best Mexican we Found

By ak2398 |

Best Mexican food we could find without traveling to far from our downtown hotel. We had cheese enchiladas & beef tacos. Both really delicious. The beef was high quality. Not your average rice & beans. Rice had a really nice herb flavor. They came with my enchiladas, but not with the tacos. There was enough on my plate for the both of us. We sat at the bar and our bartender/waitress was really nice. Very happy with the choice. We would definitely return. A bouncer from a bar down the street said this was the place to go, he was right!

Great place for a beer and meal

By RockCatWichita_KS |

It was a rainy day, and i was making my way down Sixth Street from the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, looking for refuge and refreshment. The doorman working at Coyote Ugly suggested the Chupacabra Cantina as a place where I could not go wrong. He was correct. They have an excellent selection of locally brewed beers and ales, and their pulled pork quesadillas and enchiladas were both very good - they had their own hot sauce mix containing beer and chipolte peppers. Our server was very helpful in guiding us through the menu and in helping me select appropriate beverage. My son and one of his friends met me here - it was my son's first visit though he lives in Austin. I am pretty sure he will go back. I certainly will my next trip.

Best food, best service around

By Kyle F |

This restaurant is AMAZING. We had the best server that we have ever had in our lives! She was so helpful, accommodating, and personable. She really made our day and helped brighten our trip after some flight delays/rental car problems when flying in from Philadelphia, so we're so appreciative for her sunshine! The restaurant had nice decor, good seating. The food was the best! I got chicken flautas and a chicken tinga taco - my partner got chicken tinga enchiladas and beans. It was definitely the best food ever. We couldn't finish it all and took it to go. We had the flautas in the fridge at the hotel, brought them and they got warm on our way to our flight, we ate them on the plane and they still tasted amazing. Top place, we will definitely go back over and over any time we're in Austin! Please go!

Good eats - fun atmosphere

By Eddie760 |

Been going to Austin for the last couple of years have been wanting to try this place. Middle of downtown Austin. Food is good, the staff is really warm and friendly. Had a good experience there. When in Austin, look this place up and try there smoked meats tacos are mmmmm good. I had the roast pork and that was delicious.

Great food and drink

By TravlinNacho |

We ate here twice while we were in Austin for the US Formula 1 Grand Prix. The food was great. Healthy choices thoughtfully prepared. The bar also served up some excellent beverages. The Texas Tornado is a good choice but have a designated driver, you'll need one.

great corner patio for enjoying sixth street atmosphere

By joy |

not much better way to spend an afternoon than lingering over margaritas and people watching. huge burritos, yummy avocado salad. great wait staff.

BEST Tacos EVER!!!

By Nona P |

Went here back in February for a conference and was amazed at how differently delectable the tacos were. The best I have ever had! I am still craving them 4 months later. Trying to find a reason to visit Austin again just to go there and get more tacos:) Taste bud paradise! We went when it was buy one-get one tacos and the price for two very large, delicious tacos was under $5.

Bachelor party

By Dan G |

Came here once during the day and once late at night, what a difference. This place has pretty good frozen margaritas and it turns into a club atmosphere late at night.

Best tacos ever!

By Kim L |

I stumbled across this place and was not disappointed. The music was great, they had a DJ on hand! This was during lunch an a Sunday. We sat outside, had great service. Ordered two tacos, each under $5, They were incredible. Next time in Austin i will go back.

Average...

By tooiewaco |

We were looking for somewhere to stop for a quick snack. We ordered the chips and dip appetizer. It was fresh but nothing special for the price we paid.

Orange Brisket Taco!

By Chad G |

Amazing flavors burst out their tacos! I personally loved the orange brisket and pork belly tacos! The fried chicken w bacon one was fairly good as well. The chips and salsa where kind of bland. The bartender was a sweetheart and very personable, not to mention made a mean Bloody Mary! I will definitely go back!

Try the orange chipotle brisket burrito

By Kathryn H |

The orange chipotle brisket burrito is very tasty and very filling. It comes with two different sauces, one hot and one mild. It was a good size portion for the price. The temperature was lukewarm but otherwise it was very good. Service was friendly and efficient.

Best Happy Hour on Sixth!

By Mark B |

3 to 7 P.M. $2 Domestics $3 Frozen drinks and imports. Decent selection of both imported and domestic beers. I usually go there for lunch. The lunch specials are less expensive than any other place on 6th and the portions are generous. This is definitely a must go/do on 6th.

Meh.

By Lauren Woolstenhulme |

Bad drinks, bad service from the bar tender, but the music was really good. Heard the food is good but didn’t stick around to want to try it.

The breakfast miga is almost worth the plane ticket back!

By K M A |

I thought this breakfast miga was simply outstanding! I can eat my weight and this city and it's food wore me out. This place has a funky, dark vibe and that miga was amazing!

Great food, lovely waitress (Lyssa) nice drinks.

By robert77546 |

Long narrow bar on a corner. Wonderful food, really nice for, the tacos are huge and excellent. Happy hour is good, I'd recommend the frozen margaritas over the rocks.

Cheap eats, but nothing special

By ynnej |

Prices are super cheap for lunch, but the food just isn't that great. We enjoyed the chips and salsa most. I had the taco salad, which did use decent quality beef, but skimped on the salad and wasn't flavored well. Sadly the shell was the best part. Hubs had pork habanero enchiladas. They were good but spicy even for him. Wouldn't eat here again since there are lots of other great places on 6th.

Awesome tacos within a "borderline" dive bar

By MauiMarkCT |

This place is AWESOME. Texas cuisine themed tacos with great bar service and DJ music We visited multiple times during a conference week in Austin. You have to try the honey barbecued chicken jalapeño taco. The brisket taco is also very good. The bartenders, the dive bar atmosphere and well mixed DJ music made for a great place to hang out, watch the game(s) and relax A definite must try and close so a must stay and hang out

Good food and service in a simple unpretentious place

By Toni S |

This is a mexican restaurant on a corner of 6th street. The place has tables in a long bar and outside. The decor is minimal and appears a little run down. But the food, especially the fish taco was particular good and the selection of beers more than adequate. The service was very informal but adequate.

Quality Tex-Mex; Unassuming Environment

By dctravel |

Chupacabra is a bar, plain and simple. For my group of colleagues traveling for work, however, it was a great place to grab a bite of lunch and talk about our upcoming meetings. We ended up at Chupacabra because we were looking for a place for lunch and like the look of the menu when we walked by. Sitting at the bar, we were waited on immediately by the bar tender who took the time to describe the local beers on tap. The food came quickly and correctly and the chip and queso were excellent. As is often the case in bar, the lunch service was excellent. The staff enjoyed interacting with the patrons and it felt like a cool place to hang out.

Freaking awesome

By Kelly Y |

This place was excellent! Great atmosphere, and the food was wonderful. Honey jalapeño fried chicken tacos were absolutely amazing.

Great Baja tacos

By bana626 |

Awesome Baja fish tacos and get guacamole! Other tacos are fine and not as good as Baja tacos. Service was good. A bit of a dive in terms of atmosphere, and people smoke on patio. Drinks are fine, and after 9pm becomes the 6th street crow mix.

Nothing Sweet

By Elle G |

I had already eaten dinner but agreed to join friends for dessert. I sat there the entire night as they dont have any desserts on their menu.

Tasty but just lukewarm

By Daniel R. |

The food tasted good but my burrito was only lukewarm when it arrived at the table. The two sauces that came with it were excellent, nice and spicy. Would definitely go back as I think the food not being hot was due to the waiter and not the kitchen.

Great Tex-Mex!

By bethannmahan |

Stopped here for dinner on a late Saturday night. The place was busy.. but for good reason. Great bar area and good food. Really enjoyed the fajitas! And the service was great.

Excellent tacos

By Kla2422 |

We walked in and immediately loved the atmosphere! I had a mango margarita. It was very good! I had the steak taco. The flavor was very good and unique! (The whole menu was unique) It's definitely not something you get at a typical Mexican restaurant!! Everyone got something different to eat and everyone seemed very impressed by the flavors! The waitress was very friendly and attentive! I would absolutely go back!!

Great Happy Hour Drinks!!!

By Edwin W |

While touring the downtown Austin area we stopped in to get a drink and found a great happy hour bar!! Half price drinks, great margaritas, various beers, and good non-happy hour beers as well.

Interesting Tacos and More

By Michele T |

As soon as I saw the sign for Chupacabra I sent my cryptozoology-loving husband a photo of their logo and knew I’d have to give them a try. I got the opportunity a few days later when seven colleagues and I were in need of lunch. We were seated on the patio on a perfect Austin day. Chupacabra offers a number of interesting taco choices made with homemade tortillas and house-smoked meat, as well as enchiladas, salads and burritos. Most of our group ordered two tacos – these were a lot bigger than expected and at least for me, a better choice would have been one taco and a side of beans. But I digress – taco combos include chicken tinga, pork belly, honey jalapeno fried chicken, the Yucatan (adobo smoked pork with pineapple), and a couple of vegetarian options. I chose the orange chipotle brisket taco, which included pepper strips, pineapple pico, cotijo, habanero sour cream, and radishes. This was a delicious taco, the brisket was tender and savory. However, it was super greasy (like a lake of grease) on my tortilla. I sopped it up the best I could, and once that was taken care of it was delicious, but that taco should never have left the kitchen without that meat being drained. I also ordered the Chupacabra (how could I not?) – smoked goat barbacoa, pepper strips, jicama slaw, cilantro, ghost chile aioli, and radishes. I was super excited to try goat and then very disappointed to find I am not a fan. Not a problem of preparation or anything that the restaurant did wrong, it was just a flavor that does not work for me. We also ordered guacamole for the table and it was good (not as good as Iron Cactus, but that is some pretty stiff competition). Our waitress (I think her name was KT?) was great, keeping our iced teas full, getting all of our crazy orders right, and giving us each individual checks when we were done. Chupacabra is a tough one for me to score – the orange brisket was delicious and KT was an awesome waitress, but that lake of grease from my taco was really unacceptable. Seems like a solid 3.5 to me but since that’s not an option, I’ll go with a 3. Based on all of the positives, I would give them another chance to see if they could get it right, and if so, I’d then recommend to others.

Disappointing

By jillilink |

We had to seat ourselves. The waitress totally ignored us. When she did take a drink order after a full 15 minutes ( two beers) they never arrived. We walked. Can't recommend.

Great food and good drinks

By BenH989 |

I chose this restaurant because of all the good reviews I had read about it. The chips and salsa are run of the mill, the salsa was good but nothing to write home about. So after reviewing the menu I couldn't decide on one single item because I wanted to order everything. I decided to go with The Conquistador which came with three different enchiladas and a chicken taco. All of the enchiladas that came with the plate were good and I would order them again. The only thing I didn't care for was the "pulled" chicken taco, I was really excited to see something called pulled chicken thinking it was something off the bbq. Well I was wrong it was just boiled chicken, so it was just dry and wasn't flavorful. The fiance has the Chupacabra's Favorite, which is bbq goat so I stayed away from it since I have never had good goat. Well I tried it and was shocked how ungoat like it tasted. I would recommend ordering that plate even if you think you're scared of eating goat. I would recommended this place as being one of the better places I have had food on 6th street because it's not bar food, it's a lot better.

Great drink specials, decent food

By aewilson11 |

The atmosphere is very lively and attacts a decent crowd. We stumbled in and it happened to be happy hour ($2 beer, $3 frozen drinks). I had the fajita salad and the chicken was tasty but the lettuce was really big as were the tomatoes. (Hard to eat). My friend had the fish taco and she said it was good as well. Our service the first time was awesome. (A little pink haired waitress). We went back the next day during happy hour and sat at the bar and service wasn't nearly as good as it could have been and the queso was average. But the drinks were cold and cheap!

Worth a stop

By smiller560 |

This is worth a stop on 6th street. They have happy hour specials for food and beverages. The service is good and they are located right on 6th street. If in the area I would give restaurant a try. They also run the Jackalope right next door.

Great Food, good prices, pro bartenters

By Douglas N |

I was in Austin and asked a local where to get a good burrito. He told me Chupacabra and I'm glad he did! The pulled pork burrito comes in a large, soft tortilla with your selection of ingredients with rice on the side. I got the green sauce on the inside and out (suggested by my server, the bartender). The local beers were cold, the bartenders are professional, the place is clean, slightly dark and has a bunch of TVs to watch sports. Don't look too close at the bathroom (men's) and you'll be fine.

Best Taco in a taco truck town

By OSUrob |

Their Chicken and Honey taco was easily one of the best I've ever had. Although all the taco's I tried were home runs, seemed like you couldn't go wrong. Great drink menu and atmosphere puts it over the top...

Popped in for lunch

By Lucy M |

After the flight and checking in the hotel we had a couple of hours to wander 6th St. We chose this cantina, as it looked casual and for a Friday afternoon, was not busy. We chose not to sit outside as it was 95 and 75% humidity and opted for a seat near the door to people watch while we ate. The staff was very nice, friendly and helpful. The chips and salsa were very good and fresh. I had the chicken verde tacos which were tasty, and my mate had the taco salad. We were hungry and left nothing on our plates. We eat quite a bit of Mexican food and I have given this an average rating. It was nothing special, but we did enjoy our lunch overall.

Great Tacos!

By katieroc |

We were walking around 6 St. and ducked in here since we were starved. Had to eat on the patio outside since there was a DJ inside and the music was deafening (I guess we're old!). I have to say the tacos were excellent! Steak Guisada. Tender beef. Yum. I had a house margarita and my husband a Dos Equis. Reasonably priced. You order at the bar and they bring your food.

Okay

By Garrett A |

Went for dinner and a few cocktails. Service and food quality was nothing special. The food presentation was unique and the taco serving size was very large, so order down if you can't decide. Margaritas were a decent price, but they were small in size. Overall, an okay place.

Decent place

By 740jaimef |

So, I'm always in search of a good burger. I wanted to try Jackalope but found out that it's only for 21 years and older and I was with my sons. They suggested Chupacabra which was just a few restaurants down and they shared the same kitchen which means the same burger. Burger was good. They only have seasoned waffle fries but they are good as well. Staff is friendly. Keep in mind that it is still a bar.

More of a bar feel

By Josh D. |

This place was good, and the fried avocado taco and green chili rice was perfect, but I was hoping more for a restaurant and less of a bar feel. That being said the food was good and a solid value

Delicious tacos

By yucatecamexicana |

Tacos were amazing I am mexican and I recognize they are well cooked I tried baja taco and also hippi taco, I recomend baja and also guacamole

Tasty Tex Mex Downtown

By 508caseyd |

We stopped into the Chupacabra for some dinner after strolling around downtown and working up an appetite. Luckily, we hit it during happy hour and I was able to get a tasty, generously sized margarita for $3. We were off to a good start. We ended up sharing pork enchiladas with chile verde sauce, rice and beans. Quite tasty! It had a good kick of spiciness and good flavor. It hit the spot. Our server was friendly and helpful.

Great fish taco's!

By SJBandkids |

I came upon Chupacabra by accident- it was suggested by a neighboring establishment that did not have "late night" food (9:30pm). We sat at the bar, had a pint of local beer and a couple really tasty fish tacos. While the taco's were small they were under $3.00 and exceeded my expectations. Loaded with fresh flaky fish with a spicy rub and topped with cole slaw. When you are in Austin- don't just walk past- stop in and give them a try!!!

Good Margaritas

By ktuttle99 |

We started out with this major queso with meat, cheese, avacodo and sour cream. It was very tasty. I could made a meal out of this alone. I had a fish taco with pineapple. Good and price was reasonable, not too much. Bunch of big TVs. We watched sports and listened to good music. Nice atmosphere.

Great Experience

By Adam L |

Had a great meal from start to finish! Food was awesome with fabulous flavor and big portions. Highly recommend the Orange Chipotle Brisket.

Cold food and horrible service!

By 502ericaf |

Theres street parking and some private parking around the area but no private parking. The music is way too loud for sure. I could not hear the ppl on the table next to me while we tried to eat and have a conversation. this is set up a bit like a club almost, lots of loud music and dancing. FEND FOR YOURSELF when it comes to ordering you do it with the bartender there is no true wait service here. SO GET YOUR OWN NAPKINS cause nobody will bring them to u. FROZEN STRAWBERRIES MARGARITA- like every frozen drink, way too weak even for me. here they do not make sure it is well made and the drink was too weak and sour. SUPER QUESO - huge! you can definitely share with at least 4 ppl and it is funny how the chips come in a paper bag, the presentation here fells like its for money saving and not for cleverness impact. ORANGE BRISKET TACO- my taco was cold!!! So cold. But super spicy it was disgusting. I couldn't even eat it, and since you do not enjoy table service here I had nobody that noticed my unhappiness with the meal. SIDE OF RICE AND PINTO BEANS - the rice and beans were ok. I could taste that they been on one of those water heaters waiting for me lol. Overall the rice and beans were ok. No way, there is no excuse to serve cold food at all. I'm sorry but. Weak drinks, no table service and cold food.... I cant . They are definitely more worried about being a bar that is very clear. this is not a great place to eat, not even if I am starving and this is the only place open I would not come back here.

Tacos de Rata anyone?

By Manuel C |

First time at 6th street with my wife and mother in law... Not knowing where to stop and hungry, we ended up here on a Thursday night. We were sat down, and the waitress was really friendly. We ordered a couple drinks and held up on the menu to check what was good. My mother in law noticed someone walk in, say something and walk out... My wife heard there is a mouse on top of the TV. We looked up and saw a rat on top of the bar counter's flat screen TV. I guess it wanted to see Thursday Night Football? We told the waitress and she freaked out. She told the bartender about the rat, so he got on the bar and tried to shoo it away with a rag. She then told us what we were going to order and we said no thank you. Finished our drinks and left. It skewed us how old these buildings are. I guess this place is just for drinking.

Good Vegetarian Options

By Sade P |

We stopped in for a quick bite to eat before hitting the piano bar and it was way better than we thought it would be. It has a dive bar feel, which I love, but great food. I got the portobello taco and man oh man was it good. I never set my expectations too high for vegetarian dishes but it definitely exceeded expectations It's tough to pick a place to stop and eat down there because everyone is throwing their deals at you as you walk by so pretty much everything sounds great when they're also adding "$2 beers and $3 margaritas" to the end of every sentence, but we chose right. Not a great beer selection but good food and good service

Bad service

By Jessica G |

We went to this place, good drinks but the service sucks, long faces by the bartender and waitress and they also gave us the wrong credit card.

ok food.

By mlsgd |

Located on the famous 6th street in Austin tx. Has interesting food offering "goat meat" and several regular fairs. Sat outside, but was interrupted during dining several times by the homeless people walking the streets. Would not recommend the area for families.

The ultimate margarita joint

By Raingal7 |

Healthy portions, tasty margaritas. Wish I would have bought a t-shirt. I will visit again the next time I'm in Austin.

Lunch here. Good selections of margaritas. Very good service. No ambience to speak of but it's in the heart of all the music clubs and bars. We all enjoyed our food. My pulled pork enchiladas with habanero-sour cream sauce was delicious. Our waitress, Kelsey, was great. It's a good tourist place for Mexican food

Upper Half of Bar Food

Grabbed a quick lunch while touring the E 6th Street area which is loaded with dive bars. Food here was better than typical bar food. We had a couple varieties of tacos. Really enjoyed the brisket. Pork was good as well. Both were creative and flavorful, and clearly made to order. Atmosphere is minimal/semi dive bar. However, the food is much better than typical chain bar and grill or similar. So a pretty good choice for a little adventure. Had a couple craft beers on tap as well.
