Excellent Food

By Montanacoffeelady |

My husband and I stayed down the street from City Chopsticks for 5 days. We ate here 3 times during our stay in SF. One of those times we did take-out. Each time their food did not disappoint us. Good portions and price reasonably.

Good value, good food, gluten free options

By redjer70 |

Many choices available including gluten free options which is particularly import due to my companion having a severe reaction. Food was well prepared and quite tasty.

Great food reasonably priced

By Jason S |

The food was great and very reasonably priced. We ate in the restaurant, and the staff was friendly. The place does have tight quarters (bathroom is part of kitchen).

Great find

By louisepic |

Really good dumplings and to be honest everthing we tried was excellent. Went a few times while in SF, highly recommended for an inexpensive and good meal.

Just "Ok"

By Chris F |

Decided to visit this place based on the TripAdvisor reviews, really close to our hotel so nice and convenient. The food was ok, pretty spicy, which we weren't expecting so that let it down a bit. My real issue was the attitude of the staff, they weren't particularly friendly and kept us waiting quite a while before even acknowledging we wanted a table. The food came out reasonably quick but no one checked we were ok and we sat there with dirty plates for a pretty long time before we finally got the bill. All in all, an ok experience but I doubt we'd rush back.

good chinese food in SFO

By H C |

We ordered noodles, fried rice, shrimp dumplings, siomai and beef broccoli, lemon chicken, kung pao chicken. All were good, comparable to the average Chinese Cantonese restaurant in Manila. This seems to be a family run restaurant and is rather small. You get your usual fortune cookie at the end.

Limited menu, rude staff

By HardwireTag |

Chinese takeaway food...not rocket science and available almost anywhere. Sadly I made the choice to select this restaurant one day. Firstly the service can often be fast and brash in such restaurants, but this one took it to a new level. Ignoring you when standing at the desk, any questions about the food and you were just directed to the menu and this could not be excused by the restaurant being busy....one other customer while we ordered and waited for our food. The food was ok, fair standard for a take away chineese restaurant, but nothing to write home about. In my opinion, go elsewhere and one day this place will face closure wondering why without taking a look at how they treat their customers.

Found this gem on the first day in town

By 2LivingTheLife |

Hunan and Mandarin Chinese Cuisine at its finest...what a gem. Not being a fan of Chinese food, this one caught my eye because of the unusual dishes...not your average Chinese. It was full...we were lucky to get a seat. And as soon as someone left, the seat was filled. Business people and tradesmen...all enjoying their lunch. It was truly delicious.

Pretty good

By David N |

After checking in late following a long flight, I decided to order delivery from City Chopsticks which was pretty close to my hotel. Delivery was fairly quick, about 30 minutes from the time I placed the order. I enjoyed my food overall. I got egg rolls, pot stickers, wonton soup, chicken & broccoli and chicken fried rice. The pot stickers were good, seemed handmade rather than from a frozen bag. The egg rolls were ok but had too many mushrooms for my tastes, I like them stuffed more with cabbage and other veggies. The mushroom taste kind of took over. The wonton soup was good except there was a lot of large pieces of either spinach or some other type of dark green leaf vegetable. They were too big to eat without a knife (which I didn't have) so they went to waste. The chicken and broccoli was good, with plenty of white meat chicken. My favorite was the chicken fried rice, it wasn't typical of Chinese take out in that they didn't drench it with soy sauce. The rice was still white and had a very nice flavor from the aromatics, salt and garlic. I would order from this restaurant again.

A sleeping giant.

By Blunt-of-Langwarrin |

Our friend, Melvin, recommended this to us and it was fabulous. A wide selection of entrees and mains together with a few rice dishes were expertly cooked and presented to our table in an orderly fashion. Not the most luxurious restaurant we have been in, but a very inviting and warming chinese cafe.Thank you to the staff for a memorable night.

Good Food

By Terri1947 |

The food was very good and a great selection to choose from. Very busy place. May have to wait for a table.

Very good food & excellent value too

By Australian57 |

I was staying at The White Swan at 845 Bush Street so this restaurant is only a few metres away. I had a lunch and a more substantial dinner and both were freshly cooked and excellent quality too. The lunch was only $7.95 for a small soup plus your choice of a main with steamed rice. I had chicken with broccoli which was superb. Dinner was more substantial; you probably don't need the generous bowl of soup as well as the larger portion of main and rice. They even have alcohol to purchase. Save yourself a long walk to Chinatown and try out this friendly establishment.

Fast, tasty

By Maybeperhaps |

We were hungry and this place was near and well rated. The food came VERY FAST, and we had enough to take home a whole dish between the two of us. We had the eggplant (which was great) and the Kung Pao chicken which was pretty good!

A bargain in SF

By Bill H |

Good tasting, large portions and budget prices. I really liked the Mango chicken. Lunch specials only 9-10$ includes entree, rice and side salad.

Pathetic

By JAY M |

We went there for a dinner after reading good reviews. But our experience says otherwise. Pretty ordinary place. Food was pathetic and service was even more. Ambiance average. First, as we entered, a lady greeted us and got us seated and then just went on with her own dinner without even delegating the responsibility to anyone. Another employee, who was having his dinner, handed over the menu to us after couple of minutes. For next few minutes, there was nobody attending us. The lady was having her soup, completely oblivious to what's happening around. It was another long wait before the order was taken by another guy. We ordered a spinach and bean curd soup and vegetable chowmein. Soup was completely bland with no fresh feeling. We had to add some salt and pepper to make it eatable but even after that we couldn't finish it. Vegetable chowmein was very greasy and poor in taste. I don't recommend this place to anyone.

Convenient To Petite Auberge Hotela

By Anthony B |

Late lunch was inexpensive and good. Nothing exotic. The take out was decent sized and tasty. It is around the corner from the Petite Auberge so very convenient for a late night snack.

Delicious Chinese food in downtown SF

By Familytrips148 |

We were visiting SF the first time and didn't know what to expect of the Chinese food there. Chanced upon City Chopsticks restaurant as it was near our hotel. Glad we went there. Everyone enjoyed our first Chinese dinner in SF, including the kids. The service staff was polite and attentive. Even gave out Chinese fortune cookies at the end of the visit which the kids enjoyed!

Yummy

By cherie1100 |

Busy little restaurant. Fresh and tasty food. We had the spicy beef and sweet and sour pork and the pork dumplings Which was very nice A gem of a place to find also very affordable.

Got serious food poisoning here!

By pasawasa |

My husband and I dined at this restaurant, having been there a couple of times previously. The food tasted fine; however, a few hours later, we were sick to our stomachs. Definite food poisoning! We knew it was from City Chopsticks for sure. We were violently ill all night AND the entire next day! Needless to say we'll never go back. Called the health department. They visited the restaurant and found health violations. Do yourself a favor and AVOID!

Quick, fast food

By Rhawig |

We wanted to grab some quick Chinese food. I'd skip the apps and go straight to the entree. I ordered the Chicken Moo Shi. It was good.

Excelent inexpensive chinese near union square

By Koret H |

Polite and efficient service nice portions that look and taste good. Somewhat less pricey than the general surrounding of U square. Note that they already include tip on the bill...

Great food and service!

By Audrey B |

We just happened upon this place. Oh my, the food was delicious. We ended up coming back a few more times before we left on our cruise. We had noodles, potstickers, kung pao, and soup on different nights. Everything was hot and delish! We will visit again when we are back in town.

Wow. Great tasting dishes.

By jimmyboyqld |

Almost walked past because place was empty. Glad we didn't. Service was prompt and the food first class. Pretty soon it filled up and not a spare table. Ate too much. Left very happy. Highly recommend

It was raining

By Rigden2014 |

I just popped in here to get out of the rain. This may not have been top class Asian cuisine but it was tasty and fresh and I would go back for more. If you want easy, quick, local food then this beats a lot of fast food joints and most Asian restaurants of this type.

Nice and Simple

By Shamim A |

We are late for our lunch and needed something quick in downtown San Fransisco. We stopped at city chopsticks and were blown away with their Shrimp Fried Rice. The service was quick. Taste of the food was outstanding. If you are in the middle of San Fran and need a quick Chinese bite this is the place.

Simple but good

By Firsyclass |

Good simple Chinese food if you are looking for quick pick up and go without any fuss in the busy San Francisco tourist district. Only negative, don't go for the service as they are not very friendly even to repeat customers. A bit pricey also considering the amount that you are getting.

Real Chinese.

By Cyril-Mundy |

Great little restaurant, inexpensive and a wide range of great items. Try the sizzling items. Just enjoy

Great Prawns Egg Fu Young

By TampaScott |

After a long day of travel from East Coast, we ordered delivery from City Chopsticks to our hotel room. It had been recommended by the front desk, and was very close by. The first thing I liked is that they are associated with the online website Eat24.com, so you order and pay online, and food is delivered. Very easy. Here's what we had: 1. Prawns Eggs Fu Young: 5 Stars, awesome 2. Prawns with Vegetable. Excellent. 3. Egg Rolls (great) 4. Fried Wontons (really unhealthy so I just ate a couple, but very tasty) Would highly recommend, especially the Prawns Egg Fu Young. Think of it as like a Shrimp Chinese Omelet with a sweet brown sauce (served on the side to keep dish fresh). Biggest regret: Why can't we get ONE good Chinese restaurant like this back where I live in Florida.

Better than Chinatown

By GingerEB |

We stopped at this restaurant because of the TripAdvisor decal on the window and were very pleased we did. Yesterday we ate at an "authentic" Chinese restaurant over the hill in Chinatown. You could tell it was "authentic" because only half the diners were tourists and the menu included jellyfish. However, I do not care for jellyfish nor am I particularly enthused by run-of-the-mill sweet and sour chicken for that matter. I do however very much like City Chopsticks' Szechuen Minced Chicken in a Lettuce Wrap, Green Onion Cake in a delightful peanut sauce and a great big serving of Vegetable Fried Rice. The prices are excellent for San Francisco. The food delightful. The service fast and pleasant. As indicated in other reviews, the ambiance is decidedly unimpressive. But I don't eat jellyfish and I don't eat ambiance either.

Excellent Chinese

By 159Traveler159 |

Again a short walk from our hotel near Union Square this was a truly fine restaurant. It is small and not luxurious by any means but makes up for that in good food, service and very reasonable prices. We were there with a party of ten and the owner and waitress did everything they possibly could to make us comfortable. They were even willing to adjust some of the selections to accommodate some of the group that were vegetarian. No one had any complaints and when the bill arrived it was surprisingly low. I personally had one of the best noodle bowls I've ever eaten. Really a great place at a reasonable price and within a short walk from Union Square.

Ok food, bad attitude to customers

By dc1743 |

I only tend to review very good or very disappointing places nowadays and don’t bother with just average. I will make an exception for this place though to warn fellow trip advisors. The food was ok, just average really. However as other reviewers found the check wasn’t correct. $5 had been added to a $17.50 bill. When I queried it I got a one word answer - tip. This to me is sharp practice and is a reason to avoid.

Fresh and Good

By JeQ |

Nice neighborhood restaurant. Everything was fresh. The only let down was the lemon chicken. It came out as little lemon bits instead of the thinly sliced and breaded pieces pictured on the menu. A good value.

Tasty and great value

By James R |

We were staying one block up from here and kept walking passed, commenting "its busy in there, again...." So one night tried it and it was very good, big portions, well priced and Tsingtao beer. Yes the decore and shop front are dated and tired, but it adds to the charm. You like chinese food, give it a go, I would recommend the BBQ pork for starters and the spicy chicken with fresh basil for main.

Great food served quickly

By Johnboy4343 |

Oct 13, 2016: With 40 min until Brian Wilson played at the Masonic, we were advised by a local to try City Chopsticks for a quick dinner. A brief two block (downhill) walk had us at the restaurant in 5 minutes where we were quickly seated and order dinner (Walnut prawns and Kung Pao chicken) with 2 waters. Excellent food in about 10 minutes and very reasonably priced. One comment - moments after we arrived the restaurant became very busy with walk in customers and also a continuous arrival of phone orders for pick up; so perhaps the quick service we received may have been slowed by the greater demand on the cooks. Because the staff were very busy i did get up to get my own refill of water as well as to pay the check quickly after finishing our meal. Overall, a very pleasant meal that met our minimal time available. And much more modestly priced than the higher end restaurants right next to the Masonic.

Good Basic Chinese Fare

By Pauline S |

Quick and affordable, convenient location near many hotels. Good portions to satisfy after a long day of site seeing. Try the Combo Chow Mein, General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef.

Great takeaway

By Herriotcube |

I have ordered food from City Chopsticks about 6 times now and I have always been happy with the meals and the service from the team (contrary to some of the reviews below). The combination rice is excellent, I also like the sweet and sour pork, the team are always courteous and the team cook dishes quickly making it perfect for drop in takeaway orders like mine! Will be back soon!

Glad we stopped!

By nikibee |

Had a great dinner. Hot and sour soup was perfect, yummy Szechuan chicken and Mongolian beef. I didn't want anything fancy, just a good meal and I got it.

Lunch

By Edward L |

A miracle in this town. A $6.95 lunch that was excellent. Good service and very nice people. will go back often

Best value dinner in town

By Alex L |

Best Chinese food outside China town at great prices. Service friendly in broken english but will definitely recommend anyone to go when traveling on a budget. Don't be fooled by the plain decor, the food is worth it

Great take out in SF

By 298TimC |

After a long day walking up and down hills in SF, if you just want to kick back in your room, and order some FIRST CLASS Chinese take away this is your spot. The food is fresh every dish tastes the way it should....In short I really loved it Also you can eat at the restaurant, not fancy but full of Asians!!!!

Better than expected.

By fitnessplus |

It was close to where we were staying and we were hungry so took a chance. The service was friendly, the food good and plentiful

Great Foods, faire prices

By Tanja W |

We've been there three times during our trip to San Fran. Every choice we made was a good one. We can highly recommend this restaurant. Very nice staff.

Wonderful

By Lisa S |

This place is great and it is only a block away from the Hotel Mayflower!!! The prices were right and the people that worked there were very nice. California Asian food is the best I have ever had.

Fast and tasty

By Alibroon |

Closer to our hotel than Chinatown so we popped in to save the walk. We were looking for a quick meal and preferred the cafe style to looking for a restaurant. The food arrived very quickly and portions were good. We had a quick, tasty filling meal at a decent price. Just what we wanted. One star off because I got a really dirty look for taking more of my change than the waitress reckoned I should. She fanned out my notes and held on to them and offered them up. I clearly took too many. If she'd have just left me my change she'd have had a bigger tip and I'd maybe have got a thank you instead of a scowl.

Great food, service? Not so much!

By jeff s |

The food was fantastic! The server was rude, but maybe it was the communication barrier, within walking distance of the Wyndham Canterbury

Small place w excellent food

By F00lishTraveler |

We ate at the restaurant once and did takeout another time. There is a mix of styles of Chinese cooking available here. We tried Szechuan vegetables and Shang Tung chicken as well as some appetizers. All except for the steamed BBQ pork buns was very good, and the portions are pretty generous, especially at these prices (under $10 per main dish for the most part, which is cheap in downtown SF). The night we ate at the restaurant, a continuous stream of takeout customers came through, which is a good sign. You can get a beer with your meal, which is a nice counter to the spicier dishes. Nothing fancy here, just good Chinese food.

Great quality price ratio

By Mari-Liis A |

When you look at this place from the outside or when you step inside, it really seems like any other canteen/cheap café. However, after you sit down and order, you will definitely be pleasantly surprised! The food is fresh and well cooked! The service is fast! We also had crab dumplings-best I've ever had!

Great place for Chinese Food

By Brian S |

This is one of the best places I have had Sweet and Sour Pork. Their sweet and sour sauce was the best I have had. I think a small amount of ginger. The portions were just right and the price was very reasonable. I will definitely come here again, when I am in town. Great service.

Authentic Chinese at a great price

By PosAmrita |

Fast service, delicious authentic Chinese food at an excellent price. It's hard to compete against the neighboring Chinatown , but this restaurant is well worth the visit. I ordered a cabbage dish, melongene in red sauce, batchoi and sweet sour tofu. The portions were more than adequate for two persons, and each dish brought out that delicious Chinese umami taste. Great cheap eats spot on bush street!

One of the best Chinese meals we've ever had

By Dennis_Mary |

This is a nondescript, quality, neighborhood restaurant in the Nob Hill/Union Square area of San Francisco. We ate there during a recent trip, after seeing the TripAdvisor rating in the window. We wanted some Chinese food, but wanted to avoid the touristy offerings of Chinatown, a few blocks to the east. The food was excellent and the service was good. We had the chicken chow mein and the chicken fried rice; all of the menu items looked tempting. The serving sizes were more than adequate for two adults and the prices were very reasonable. I believe they have delivery for a slight charge in case you want to order in.

It was like we went to New York!

By naphiah |

Amidst the strange, beautiful, and funky part of Bush Street near to downtown San Francisco, are apartment buildings, businesses and people redolent of a kind of city beauty and nostalgia common to the early twentieth century, and to Manhattan. My family and I had a recent, fortunate lunch at one of the interesting and smallish places lining this colorful strip of commerce/residence in the thick of lower Nob Hill. We were seated in the window of City Chopsticks, in the company of what appeared to be construction workers, residents and tourists; a reassuring combination of people. We each had the lunch special: I, twice-cooked pork with brown rice, my husband, Kung Pao chicken, my daughter, broccoli beef. Each lunchplate came with rice, a delicious chicken corn soup, and I expect, the wonderful tea. Each plate was gaspingly perfect. My pork was spicy and smoky with a beautiful sweetish hot gravy, sauteéd greens and I believe, seaweed. My husband's Kung Pao chicken had the requisite peppers and peanuts and chicken, and nice, smoky, tender zucchini. The broccoli in my daughter's broccoli beef was tender and crisp, the beef, lean, and the sauce complex with dark and sweet. The service was kind and efficient and the prices were as close to those in the early twentieth century as the buildings. The restaurant was clean and airy. When we left to exchange my daughter's Christmas gift shoes from Grandma at Macy's, she exclaimed:"it's like we went to New York".

Excellent Chinese Food

By TallTraveler2013 |

Four of us ate here and we all had very good meals. The pork fried rice was especially good. The service was friendly and prompt and the place was clean and comfortable. Go and have a good Chinese meal.

Average

By slldtd |

Good food and good value for money. Looks like it's run by the whole family but only the one boy serving as the others don't seem to speak much English. But he was very nice and friendly. It doesn't look a great place and I wouldn't dress up to go there but food was enjoyable. An average Chinese.

Huge tasty portions

By Barilyn U |

It looks like a spit and sawdust canteen, but the food is better than all the swankier Chinese places I've been to lately. Every bite is full of flavour and the portions are definitely on the generous side. Great part of town, charming service and great prices.

WOW!

By Mwright124 |

If you were walking by this place you wouldn’t think enough of its appearance to walk in. If you were fortunate enough to do so, you’d have an OUTSTANDING meal. Try the Salt and Pepper Shrimp, spring for the fried rice, and the soups are all fantastic: won ton best ever and even the miso soup was awesome. I’ll be back next time I’m in Frisco.

City Chopsticks

By Joseph C |

Ordered lemon chicken for takeout and it was inedible. Platter of overcooked doughballs with not enough lemon. Took two bites and threw it out. $13 in the garbage.

Excellent

By mattgod |

My family and i went here a couple of nights ago. It was close to the hotel and we fancied Chinese food. This place looks basic and cafe like but don't be fooled by this. The takes are set like this and it is not fine dining, but the food was frankly excellent all round. We seat Chinese a lot and this was probably one of the best. Ask the dishes were really nice, fresh, tasty and served relatively quickly. Recommended and i am sure you will not be disappointed.

Surprised how good it was

By Dee29 |

My hotel wasn't far from this so one night on the way bacl, I stopped by to try their food and it was very good. Highly recommended it.

Loved it. Best General Tsou/Tso/Cho's Chicken we've ever had.

By Groatcakes |

Full disclosure: I'm not someone who has traveled to China, and I'm sure I'm not the most adventurous eater when it comes to Chinese cuisine. Go ahead and freak out and swoon on your fainting couch and sniff your sniffings and focus your pince-nez glasses and proclaim my pronouncements inferior because I don't eat whatever the Chinese version of Balut is, and sing all that opera all you want; if you find me too into the Americanized Chinese for you, then knock yourself out. However, if you're into going out for Kung Pao and the most incredible General Tsou's Chicken we've ever had, what I DO know is that you will get it here. We have gone all over the City looking for the perfect Chinese food, so we've been through a number of SF's best (mostly in the western half of the City, though). Frigging tucking, macking stuff here. We also had the Chow Mein and the Garlic Chicken. Everything was incredible. We are crossing our fingers hoping that they deliver to our neighborhood. Wish us luck! Service was perfectly friendly, and we were seated immediately. We're very happy with this place!

I like this place!

By Frank4014 |

Overall good service. Great lunch food. Nice hot n sour soup. Great prices. Clean bathroom. Interesting crowd. I'd go back. Convenient location to union square

Good Chinese Food, Good Portions

By Debby D |

The food is tasty, the service is good, the atmosphere is low key. We were a group of 3 and tried pot stickers, garden vegetables, kung pao shrimp, and Mongolian chicken. Small place, busy, and it is all about the food. Portions are good size and best shared, we should have ordered 2 dishes for 3 people, we had plenty left over. Traditional fortune cookie to end the meal. We spent $50 with tip.

Check your bill

By OhioTim50226 |

3 of us stopped in for dinner and everyone liked their dinner The orange beef was especially good. This place probably does a lot of carry out business. There was only one other couple eating while we were there. As others have mentioned the service is terrible. They took our order, brought our food and we never saw anyone again till they brought the bill which was written in Mandarin. Later on I why it was in Mandarin and not English and wonder if they added a tip. It seemed that there were more items listed than were order and at the time I thought they charged extra for rice. All in all I would consider eating here again.

Good take out

By Michael3288 |

We were staying around the corner and wanted Chinese take out. The food was tasty, but not special. The price was right.

Old favorite now very average

By Caliban555 |

Previously a great, reliable take away or delivery option but the last year consistently mediocre. Crispy Beef is now floating in a sauce. Other entrees inconsistent. Bring your old chef back or whatever changed!!!

Very Good Chinese Food

By Blastandlaugh |

I was in town for a week, and City Chopsticks was a close walk. I ordered twice from there, and the service was very good, and the food was hot and greasy each time. I had the Kung Pao Prawns over rice, and then later in the week I had the Chicken with Green Beans. Both dishes were flavorful, and exactly what I expected. I would order again from this location and recommend it to others.

Nice soup to go

By Lee-and-Baby |

Enjoyed the hot and sour as well as won ton soup. Ordered to go for a light lunch. Very short wait inside.

Great Chow Mein

By CaliLAgirl |

Instead of going to Chinatown for Chinese food, we decided to try City Chopsticks which was a restaurant recommended by our hotel and within walking distance. We ordered three vegetable egg rolls as appetizers for $3.95, delicious chicken chow mein for $6.95, and spicy chicken with basil for $10.50 that had the right amount of spice. Each dish was enough to feed two people so we were able to take leftovers back to our hotel mini-frig. The prices are reasonable and each dish was wonderful. I noticed locals dining here with their family or solo. There were also lots of take-out orders. If you are looking for Chinese food that is reasonably priced and tasty, I recommend dining at City Chopsticks.

Good food, modest portions, rice and soup extra

By Jayhawk17 |

Glad we found this, food was good, short wait. Portions were small and rice was not included in the price. Orders are taken quickly, after that no refills in water or check back to see if you'd like anything else. For freshly prepared Chinese in San Francisco this is a good option.

Just really good!

By Nick Y |

Had food delivered last night. Chicken Broccoli (hot) and it was. Tasted great. Happy family was good...ribs were "a little weird " says the bride. Steamed dumplings, good. Pork fried rice, average.

Never judge a book by its cover.

By Lorna H |

I'm not gonna lie at first I was a bit dubious about how good the food would be based on first impression of the somewhat dated decor. However, I feel this is a failing on my part, as just because the place is not painted grey with trendy reclaimed wood furnishings like most of the overpriced top san fransisco eateries does not mean this place does not deliver in flavour and freshness. No it does not have the in fashion 'craft' beers but it does have a lovely section of Chinese and the other usual suspects that perfectly refresh the palate - I went for a good old fashioned budweiser! The food however makes up for the plain decor and lack of craft beers. Fresh and tasty and exactly what I had been looking for within the other 'top' establishments who have previously failed to deliver in flavour. I had the szechuan chicken & veggies and I was not dissapointed! Bursting with flavour and the buzz of the szechuan pepper in my mouth - good job I had an ice cold bud to hand. My partner and I shared the combination fried rice which again was cooked to perfection with delicate prawns cooked to perfection, the tenderest beef strips and velvety chicken. They themselves had the chicken chow mien and judging by the 'MMM'S' & 'OMG'S' I guess they enjoyed there's just as much! Decent sized portions and decent service all for an outstanding price. Just over $25 for 2 people in this city never mind anywhere else is a steal. Please please please see past the plain decor and give it a bash either to sit in or take out or even better delivered to your hotel door!

Outstanding food

By Keith F |

This is a simply furnished unpretentious restaurant with a very good, Nicky priced menu. The service is prompt and the food outstanding. This is one of the best Chinese meals I have ever eaten. This restaurant is a real gem and if you enjoy Chinese food it is not to be missed.

Delish!

By Laura H |

We went to this restaurant because it was steps from our hotel, The White Swan Inn. We went back a second time because the food was wonderful. Freshly cooked, hot and delicious. Dinner for two with wine was under $40. From the outside it doesn't look special but we are so glad we went in! Very small and not fancy but the food was amazing. Would def go again if we get back to San Francisco.

Excellent Chinese

By Ken T |

We had chicken chow mien and S/S chicken which were truely outstanding. House special prawns were too salty for our taste. This us just a small assuming restaurant. Don't dress up. We'd head back without doubt next time were in AGO.

Ordered delivery.

By LostInTime |

I can only rate the food as I ordered delivery to my hotel room. The delivery itself was very fast and the delivery guy was very nice. I ordered the orange beef which was very good and the beef fried rice which was a bit bland. But overall it was good food.

Best Nob Hill Chinese!!

By TBMORE |

Clean, FRESH, and excellent. Great serviced, great food, and reasonable. So nice to find a place that takes pride in their environment and also know how to cook!!

Pretty decent Chinese food!

By Frederick S |

We just had dinner here the other night, right down the block from our hotel. We've traveled the world, and eaten what we would describe as pretty decent authentic Chinese food. Our experience here was fresh, tasty, quick, and at a reasonable price.

Neighborhood Hunan / Szechuan Restaurant

By Pam F |

We stayed at a nearby hotel for several days earlier this week and had dinner on Monday, then lunch and dinner the next day here because we enjoyed the food so much. This is a small, modest looking restaurant in a neighborhood close to Nob Hill. There is an extensive, reasonably priced menu, with the spicy entrees clearly marked. The Monday evening we dined, the locals coming for takeout were numerous which slowed service for us diners in the restaurant. This was not the case the next day for lunch or dinner. The quality of the food was excellent.

Flavor

By Walter S |

We ordered delivery. It was speedy over to Geary St. We just had some standard dishes, but the sauces used in cooking are out of this world. This is better than any Chinese food I have had, including in The Orient

Amazing Food!

By Stephanie R |

This is probably the best Chinese food I've ever had. We ordered the crispy sesame beef, mu shu prawns and soup. Everything was fresh, hot and absolutely delicious! The crepes were thin and were a perfect compliment to the shrimp and veggies. The staff was also very friendly.

Super good!!!

By Alessia23B |

We had dinner at this restaurant for three consecutive evenings! This would suffice as a comment. Very large portions, really good food! Spicy dishes are well signposted, there is plenty of choice even for those who don't like spicy food. Great prices for San Francisco. Clean place and friendly staff. Too bad they don't deliver to Italy haha

Great value

By 5ultan |

Been to this place many times over the last year for lunch. The food is quickly prepared and of good quality. Very reasonably priced and much better than many more fancy/expensive Chinese restaurants in and around China Town.

Very good

By Andew R |

There is not a lot to shout about the setting but the food was excellent and service quick. I went here with a friend after reading reviews and have no regrets

The orange beef was out of this world! The best orange beef I have ever had! My husband loved the Kung Pao Shrimp; he eat ever bite and said it was very good.

City Chopsticks hit the spot

By Paul O |

We popped into City Chopsticks for some lunch we ordered Chicken Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour Pork, Sizzling Chicken, Mixed vegetable rice and a Singapore noodle all was served very quickly and we ate while they chopped their beans at the table beside us.

It's okay, not more

By Pierre6425618 |

The food was fine, but not exceptional, while the price was pretty expensive. I got "full" for $22. The service is okay too.

A consistently good meal

By Thor_Nogson |

Came here from uk with my family (3 under 15s who aren’t particularly expansive with their choices of meals). We ordered a selection of dishes which were all good. We definitely ordered too much but had a good variety. My wife & I thought all the dishes had excellent taste at a great price. The restaurant has little atmosphere & doesn’t look much but we’d definitely come here again.

Great Evening Meal

By Graham P |

Looking a Chinese meal in San Francisco on Thursday and you discover that they close early. However, found City Chopsticks what a gem, basic setting but the food was great. The fried rice and vegetable portions are very good, as are the main courses so you don't need to have too much extra. The meal and drinks was about $80 for four of us, great value too. Definitely recommended.

Unpretentious, Affordable, Delicious

By Garam |

Nice, clean restaurant serving delicious food. The steamed pork buns and the House Duck are really good. Very nice owner and excellent service. Try this place. You won't be disappointed! 😋

Very good local restaurant

By mjm47 |

My granddaughter and I were staying in a hotel just a few doors down and ate here on the recommendation of the front desk person. We had the pot stickers, mui shu pork, and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was very good.

Comfort food.

By Lapster2011 |

It’s strictly vinyl tabletops and paper napkin country here. But I do appreciate the very fast turnaround. The steaming plates were in front of me 5 minutes after placing the order. No wonder these guys do a brisk take-out trade. The sweet & sour soup is a 2-phase brew that needs to be stirred really good. The hot is all on top and the sour is packed in the bottom. Excellent cold medicine stuff. The Singapore noodles is a curry-style dish. It is on the mild side but comes in a heaping portion. All and all, a great price value for a full meal.

Best chinese food and reasonably priced

By Deborah D |

My husband and i have just paid City Chopsticks a visit in San Francisco. The place itself is small, the staff were friendly but best of all the food was amazing. Portions are decent size, especially the soups. Being used to chinese resturants in the UK were the bowls of soup are generally a starter, it came as a suprise when the food all came out at once and the bowl of soup could have served at least 4 people comfortably! We had the satay chicken, curried chicken and egg fried rice. The food was fanrastic. Highly recommended.

Nice Kung Pao

By Craxiter |

Wanting a quick meal I dropped in early in the supper hour and ordered Kung Pao Prawns. The spice level was nice and the rice a bit on the sweet side to complement the spiciness. Service very quick.. Fortune cookie advice very wise...

Great Chinese

By Andrew R |

This is a great Chinese located on the outskirts of the main China town area, we had a very nice meal and service was fast and friendly and the food fresh and well prepared

Horrible chinese food

By lucy19732016 |

We looked online for reviews on chinese food and found this place. We ordered 5 different items. The food was so over battered. There was hardly any chicken under it all. We were very disappointed with this place. We were on our first time family vacation to san francisco so we looked up places to eat and went with the best comments and the closest place to our hotel. My husband had diarrhea about an hour after the meal. Do not go here for good chinese food.

Drive away

By profezzoren |

Heavily overpriced food poor quality. The waitress gave a bill that was handwritten and unreadable. Almost double the price of what we had ordered.

Decent meal on Christmas Eve

By DixieChickDallas |

We found this place on Christmas Eve. We were looking for something a little more "American-Chinese" than what we found in China town. The food was delicious and the portions were large. Note that rice has to be ordered separately. They seem to do a big take-out business. I would give a higher rating but the service was poor. The waitresses sat at the table next to us chatting the entire time except for when we asked for something. Overall a good meal and a decent walk from Union Square

Delicious food, excellent service

By pixiecj |

We went out for a meal when in San Francisco, we were staying near China Town & wanted to have an authentic meal. The restaurant was a short walk from our accommodation. The meals were great, like most American meals quite large servings, which meant we had some to take home for the next evening. The staff were attentive and there was a vast vegetarian selection for my partner, who chose a mushroom dish and a vegetarian fried rice that was very tasty. I had a Satay Beef and it was delicious. The prices were also very good.

Good neighborhood Chinese

By TX2OBX |

Two blocks from our hotel (Donatello), although the walk there was seriously uphill! Very small restaurant, but food was well done and the service was fine. Two shrimp dishes and a chicken fried rice were all good- even 12-year old grandson enjoyed it. We judged it well worth the hike.

Very quick and very tasty!

By Joe B |

We popped in here for food and were not disappointed. Waitress was very efficient and the food arrived after just a few minutes. We had the Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken with Broccoli and shared a bowl of brown rice. The Kung Pao was possibly one of the best I've had and the broccoli was cooked to perfection. More than enough rice for our needs. We'll definitely come back again before our trip ends.

Very good Chinese food!

By D i |

I've been there for lunch recently at least 4 times the past couple of months as I've need to be near a condo building near by. They have many take-outs during that time. All is fresh, reasonably prices and very good basic Chinese food, with beer and wine available.

Cheap food served quickly

By PeteandMissie |

We dropped in for a quick bite. Food was served swiftly and was fresh and cheap. Laminex tables and seat yourself etc . Seemed popular

Great quality take out

By Damian A |

We fancied some takeout Chinese and this place was fab. Ordered on line, food plentiful, hot and tasty and a range of dishes that we all enjoyed. Food was prepared and ready within 20 mins and processed via the on line ordering app. I’d definitely go here again.

Good value

By hilohiomom |

We recently stopped in City Chopsticks for dinner on the recommendation of an employee from our hotel. The restaurant was very clean and the people that worked there were very nice (although they did not speak very much English). I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a quick bite near Union Square. I had the General Tso's prawns and it was delicious!! It is a snug little restaurant and not formal at all. The prices were very reasonable, 6 of us ate dinner for about $100.

Best Chinese Food in San Francisco

By John M |

Although Chinatown is well-known for its great Chinese restaurants, I have found that this restaurant is the best with its great food and service. Be sure to visit before 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, for the lunch specials.

Very good/moderately priced

By Judy G |

We wanted a simple dinner not too expensive and near our hotel. This fit the bill. Excellent service. Food fresh. Outstanding eggplant, very good hot & sour soup, good fish with vegetables and Hunan sauce. It would have been better if the fish wasn’t breaded. I would definitely return if I came back to SF.

Close to the Marine Hotel

By Llama Sisters |

The crab w/ cheese wontons delicious and the chicken fried rice also. Service was slow for taking our order, but the food was ready really fast. The prices were decent. Best chinese food I have had in years. We went in for a late dinner about 8pm.

As Good As Your Favourite Takeaway Back Home

By Oliver R |

Very reasonable food. There are a lot of places advertising Dim Sum in SF but if you just want some extremely well cooked and tasty Chinese food then I can highly recommend this place. It is a takeaway which can seat about 20 people, not a restaurant where your expectations should be a la carte high. The food is perhaps slightly on the salty side depending on one's taste. As good as anything I've had anywhere in this price range except Hong Kong, which is hardly a criticism. If you like deep fried American meets Chinese have the cheese and crab dumplings. Not really Chinese, more American, but decedent. Chicken and (Sweet)Corn soup one of the nicest I've had ever (the large option is definitely for two people). General Tso's special chicken is basically a crispy sweet and sour with lots of chilli. Very tasty. Sizzling beef was delicious, also very spicy. Chicken fried rice was excellent and had pretty much an entire breast in it. If you like Chinese and have a favourite take away in your country, I think this place will easily compete. Lightening fast service too. They are not rude just very busy and from my life experience just typically Chinese. Finally, pay at the counter - there is no need to wait for the bill.

As good as any Chinatown restaurant if not even better!

By Kat K |

We were staying at a nearby hotel and did not want to venture too far as we had had a long day of walking. The restaurant is small and basic, and looks like they also have a good take out business. We were very pleasantly surprised at how good the food was so we returned for a second visit and enjoyed it just as much the second time around! Everything was fresh and flavorful and service was excellentWe enjoyed the Sesame Beef, lettuce wrap, asparagus and shrimp which we added scallops too and it was exceptional not over cooked. The hot and sour soup was good and very good on the second visit. Prices were reasonable. We visit San Francisco often and this is as good as any Chinese food we have ever had in Chinatown.

City Chpsticks

By Stephen P |

An absolutely outstanding restaurant. Highly recommended if you are staying anywhere near Union Square. Great Chinese selection, we had garlic prawns and a recommended orange beef both extremely tasty, and prawn rice. I would disagree with some reviews about the staff, we found them all very helpful and friendly. The restaurant does not have kerb appeal and you would walk straight past but do go in, you won’t regret it. Oh and half the price of similar San Francisco Chinese restaurants.

Great food, fast service, reasonably priced

By Randy C |

We found this place based on other reviews and it didn't disappoint. There are only about ten tables, but we were seated right away. The soups were hot, the beer was cold, service was attentive and efficient, and the food was great!

One word.........GO

By Tom G |

Great little place with outstanding Mongolian Beef, the best we have ever had! Very clean. Great Hot/Sour soup and the fired wonton were great. Not a lot of tables but hey the food is worth the wait, so go !!!!!

Good Chinese Food

By Andrew W |

The restaurant doesn’t have much kerb appeal, but if you eat there you won’t regret it. These service was excellent and the food was delivered to the table quickly. The garlic chicken house speciality was particularly good.

Reasonably priced and delicious

By Jud1thmason |

Just near our hotel and recommended by the man on reception, we needed somewhere to eat quickly and this was a great place. The duck and prawn dishes were very tasty. They do a roaring take away trade too.

So Not Worth It!!!!!!!!!!! Check your order first!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Joe D |

After a long day sightseeing and biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, we arrived late back to the hotel. We wanted something fast so we called City Chopsticks to have it delivered to the hotel. The order came quick and that was the only great thing. I ordered the Tempura Shrimp Stuff Jalapeño. there was nothing stuffed. The jalapeño was not a jalapeño but a piece of the green bell pepper that was cut into very small pieces. The shrimp was not shrimp but chicken!!!!! House Special Eggplant was like a soup and not a plate, Only one fork and one soy packet came with the order..I called and the woman said they couldn't do the stuffed jalapeño.That's what they made instead. That conversationist on that lasted 10 mins. I just hung up the phone.

Never Judge a Book By Its Cover!

By 1073BB |

This is a hole in the wall no matter how you look at it. Especially for San Francisco’s storied dining scene. Yet, it’s bright, clean, and was recommended by the knowledgeable receptionist at our hotel next door, Petite Auberge. So, when we were pressed for time before catching a city tour, we popped in for lunch. She had suggested the green bean beef, which was excellent! And only $9.95 for a generous portion. Never judge a book by its cover!

Last Minute Recommendation

By tande08 |

We asked the front desk agents at the Hotel Mark Twain and they suggested City Chopsticks because it was close by. Just 4-5 blocks up the street from our hotel, easy to find. Small but quaint place with a cozy feel. Good food and good portions, enough for the two of us to share. Friendly staff and a good view of the city life. Would go here again!

A gem of a place to find!

By pintsizedblondie |

We found this place by chance when Googling recommended restaurants to try during our stay. The restaurant itself is small and personal, but the staff are very friendly and service was quick, efficient and polite. The food was absolutely delicious and our plates were cleared. I would definitely recommend the sweet and sour chicken, it was so tasty. We were pleasantly surprised with the price - just short of $40 for 2 mains, a side dish of fried rice to share and 2 beers. Try it - you will not be disappointed!

The Garlic Prawns are amazzzzzzing!

By Melanie D |

Had read the reviews on trip advisor when looking for an Asian take away and we were not disappointed. Owe ordered bbq pork buns for entree. They were full of taste and super fluffy. For main we had three ingredients grill, garlic shrimps or prawns for us aussies and combination fried rice. The garlic Prawns were the star, super garlic taste and broccoli cooked to perfection. Meal ended with fortune cookies which weren’t super corny. A enjoyable meal and would highly recommend.

Just as Good as Ever

By Andy C |

Ate here 2-3 years ago twice and enjoyed the wide selection of dishes. Came back now since I was staying nearby and the place is just as good as ever. Simple, straightforward food, well prepared at modest prices. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere. What's not to like?

Highs and Lows

By nat_nv123 |

My sister and I got in to the city later in the evening. It was too cold to walk around so we decided to get food delivered and City Chopsticks won out. We ordered online and food was delivered in 20 min. That was really nice. We ordered war wonton soup, chow mein, fried rice, and mango chicken. The war wonton soup was amazing—I would order again from there just for the soup. That was definitely the high. The chow mein and mango chicken were good. The fried rice was the low—pale, no flavor. I would not recommend the rice.

Ordinal taste and horrible service

By shushushuiii |

I visited it because it showed the high rating of TripAdvisor. A middle aged woman took my order without any hospitality and less explanation even when I asked. After serving my dish, I had to take seasonings from another table even with few guests. I did not expect quality service, nevertheless, I left a sour aftertaste.

Great Chinese Food

By Oggiedoggie |

Small store front type restaurant with excellent food and service. It is on Bush Street so you need to know where to find it.

Functional

By Lihit |

As it was said in many previous reviews: food is good and quick. It's a good option when hungry and have no time to think about it too much.

Good Find

By rad |

We were looking for something close and easy after a long day. There was three of us that dined. We started with egg rolls and chicken corn soup, both were hot and tasted good. We ordered schezwan chicken, gen tso chicken and a rice dish. All were flavorful and the portions were more than enough for us all. Service was friendly and our food came out hot and timely.

Fresh and Yummy

By CayUcusZ |

You know how you can tell a good place when you see a lot of locals inside or getting take-out? Well this is that place. Only blocks away from the famous China Town, you will not find any place in that part of the city that is better than City Chopsticks. A nice variety on the menu, freshest ingredients, and food prepared only when you order it. So hot you could get a steam facial while you eat! Small, family owned. Don't be swayed by the funky outdoor signage or "odd" pictures of menu items on the wall. Just go inside, sit down and enjoy GREAT Chinese food!

Awesome for what it is

By alsbergs |

Had Singapore noodles and pot stickers. Both were very good . This is a simple, very reasonably priced restaurant with quality Chinese food. Obviously there is much more than what I ordered on the menu but I bet the experience would be similar. My service was good and the dishes were produced rapidly. I would return and wish I had such a place near my home. I don't.

Decent Chinese food, very quick service

By BJVB |

My wife and I were visiting San Francisco staying near City Chopsticks, so we decided to order takeout based on recommendation from the hotel staff. Food was prepared very quickly. I ordered General Tso chicken and my wife got chicken broccoli. We also ordered chicken fried rice and chow mein. All dishes were very good and we had so much food that we enjoyed leftovers the next day. I will definitely consider going to City Chopsticks again next time we are in SF, even with all of the other options for Chinese food being so one by.

Really Good

By Michael Schlatter |

My wife had to have Chinese food while we were in San Francisco. I got on Trip Advisor and found City Chopsticks just around the corner from our hotel. The food was excellent. There was a limited wine and beer selection, but the choices were great ones. I had to laugh when they brought the bill. It was in Chinese.

Good, solid, basic Chinese

By John L. |

Good, solid, basic Chinese fare at a reasonable price (esp. for SF!). Thoroughly enjoyed my meal of Spicy Sautéed Asparagus (although a bit heavy on the sauce), Salt & Pepper Shrimp (pictured, and some of the best I've ever had) and Hot & Sour Soup (the 'small' portion was the size of a 'large' portion elsewhere). Would definitely return if ever again in the neighborhood. BTW - the whole time I was there they had a VERY active take-out business. Either the locals love them, or they are simply convenient.

Visited due to location and was very busy. Food was great!

By Holenone9399 |

Enjoyed egg rolls and Happy Family for a late dinner staying at a near by hotel. Egg roll was served as three mini rolls and sauce. Happy Family was fresh with large meat chunks but mushrooms were a little large for my taste. Staff wasn't very friendly, but professional and prompt. Just depends what you are looking for. For me, I wanted high quality dinner. Price was a little steep for carryout but it would visit again when in the area and needing a quick bite.

Great value, good food

By Xhara71 |

It's hard to find a restaurant that's in a central, feel safe area, offering good food at very good prices, but this is one. Not much in ambiance, but if you just want to eat good food cheaply then this is the perfect spot.

Excellent Chinese Food

By PhyllisColumbus_Ohio |

We were staying just down the street at the White Swan Inn and needed a quick takeout meal. The hotel recommended City Chopsticks and it was literally just a stone's throw away, on the same side of the street. Several Chinese diners were at the tables, so it was a good first impression. My family ordered a variety of dishes but I ordered the green beans - the photo just spoke to me. Back in the hotel I inhaled the beans - so crisp, fresh, garlicky, and perfectly seasoned - and they came with a side of white rice. Later that night I woke with an overwhelming urge for more green beans. I had to wait until the next day to satisfy my craving however. And they were just as good the second time around. I am gluten free, so they had to cut out the soy sauce. But still, they were totally addictive. Oh, and my family wolfed down their dishes too so we all went back for more.

Tasty, relaxed joint

By dustythoughts |

This informal, relaxed Chinese restaurant is exactly what we needed after walking around all day. The menu is big, and while the dishes are fairly standard for Chinese restaurants, the food was well-prepared with large portions and affordable prices, and they have gluten-free options as well.

Delicious!

By Kellie F |

the restaurant exterior and seating is very simple but by far this was one of my favorite meals while in San Francisco and very reasonably priced!

Excellent food and service! Loved it!

By Donald S |

His little store front Chinese restaurant is a gem. Friendly, courteous owners but the star is the food. I took two bites of my hot& sour soup and proclaimed it the best I've ever had! I also had egg rolls which were very good and steamed pork buns which were also very good. My wife orders sweet & sour chicken every time we have Asian food and she said it was the best she's ever had. Everything was fresh, seasoned properly and served at the proper temp. (I hate room temperature soup). The food was served promptly and piping hot. We will definitely return when we visit SF again!!

Fine Standard Chinese

By ElMusaferain |

There's nothing at all wrong with City Chopsticks, and if I lived in the neighborhood I'd be glad to have a standard old-fashioned Chinese around the corner. It's definitely not going for the more adventurous eater, but the portions are big, the prices right, and the beer ice cold.

Top notch, fast and clean

By KayRynerson |

No English spoken, so good luck keeping the soy sauce out if you are gluten-intolerant. Otherwise met my highest expecations.

Wow so good!

By JB5059 |

We ate there tonight with friends. We were both visiting from Australia. The meal was delicious. We ordered 3 main meals with boiled rice between the 4 of us. Good service! The beer and wine were great prices as well the dishes.

Order of eggplant house special

By wellTravelledPapa |

I ordered the House Special spicy Eggplant dish. It was prepared in a medium spicy brown sauce that was NOT GREASY, LOTS OF LAVENDER COLORED Japanese eggplant slices, sliced chicken and 3 shrimp. Serving size was generous and quite filling. Price was $12.95 plus tax. Average family of 4 could easily be satisfied with only 3 dishes. I went back to enjoy another solo meal at this restaurant. They do a lot of to go orders when I was dining there. Enjoy!

Edge of Chinatown

By Chris V |

Good standard Chinese fair. A little on the bland side but I ordered chow mein which is not my usual. Large portions. Excellent egg rolls, great beverage prices. I'd go again.

Recommendations waiter

By Thijmen |

The menu was a bit unclear, so we asked the waiter for advice. The waiter gave good advice and it was just enough. Cozy atmosphere.

Authentic quality cheap eats

By Meme |

We saw this restaurant on Trip Advisor as it was nearby our hotel. We went for lunch and it was ideal - low key environment but high quality food and quick service. The crab and cheese dumplings were superb!

Inexpensive but delicious

By JHunterP1990 |

For how little the food costs, City Chopsticks delivers very delicious and filling meals. My office would regularly order in from them because there was something for everyone without breaking the bank. The service staff is very friendly.

Great food!

By Amanda Garland |

This was our first dining experience in San Fran on our recent girls trip about 2 weeks ago and we were not disappointed! Ordered an array of items to share including Mongolian beef, veggie spicy fried rice, chicken chow mein amongst a few other things. All was fantastic. We then picked up takeout again for our last meal the night before we left. The General Tso chicken was to die for!! Great way to end our trip. Very thankful our hotel was within walking distance of this restaurant! Highly recommend!

Tasty experience

By Teacher071 |

Decided to try City Chopsticks based on its reviews and proximity to our hotel. It is a very small establishment, but we stopped for an early dinner so it wasn't very crowded. I had their Spicy chicken with vegetables while my husband ordered their Mongolian beef. Both dishes were very good, but I was surprised that it didn't include any type of rice with the meal. There was an additional charge for it. We did get fortune cookies at the end of our meal.

Lunch

By Franky |

Good food, authentic and gentle service. We ordered food from the lunch menue for very fair pricing.

Really happy with meal

By Fred S |

Lots of vegetarian options, which was great for us. The delivery was a little slow, but it was a holiday. The food was very good and filling, and the price was okay.

Craving Chinese food. Should have gone elsewhere.

By LJ |

The fried rice was really good, but the main event Sweet and Sour chicken tasted a bit like an orange and a bit like metal. Unusual. The wait time was ok. The service was ok. The price was ok. It was ok. The reviews were correct though, my chicken was overpowered by batter. In fact I think I ordered metal orange batter in sweet and sour sauce by mistake.

Delicious!

By Ocean_view42420 |

We were tired after a long road trip and was looking for a place that would deliver to our hotel. Found this place on Grubhub that was highly rated. Our order showed up fast! Food was great. The hot and sour soup was so hot I had to let it cool down before I could eat it! Big portions. Very good!

Excellent, Affordable, Quick

By Jen A |

If you find yourself on Nob Hill and don’t want to walk too far down for some good eats, stop here! Excellent lunch specials are incredibly affordable and come out quickly and piping hot! So many options. Always a great choice and worth a stop.

Very good Chinese Food at reasonable prices

By geotech522 |

It's not fine dining, but if you want a good Chinese dinner that is at a reasonable price for a good size serving, there are a lot of satisfying choices on the menu. The service is friendly and fast and the restaurant is clean. We noticed that a lot of people call or log in and order take-out food from City Chopsticks. A very good choice for Chinese food a few blocks away from Union Square.

Super Tasty Chinese Food

By AlexisO21 |

This restaurant is typical Chinese in look and style and the food is well priced and very tasty, great portions with good value for money.

Good spicey food for all.

By Noneof Y |

Good foor and very fast service. It is very close to most hostels around Union square and only across the street from ours :). Recommended!

Suprisingly good food/atmosphere.

By v09shu |

For a quick dinner from an eclectic menu. The façade belies the warm and friendly atmosphere. Consider sharing plates. The tastes are varied and distinctively prepared.

Great, good value cuisine

By Warwick V |

We were visiting the city for the day and had already seen Fisherman's Wharf and taken a ride on the cable car. I was looking for cheap eats near the Cable Car museum, and this was the perfect choice. Our large family of 7 was seated right away after pushing a couple of tables together. The menu was simple yet well explained, and there was something that appealed to everyone. Service was fast, efficient, and we all left feeling satisfied.

Best crispy beef I've ever had

By David F |

Plenty of Chinese restaurants in SF but went to this one based on reviews. The food was excellent, the best crispy beef I've ever had! Service wasn't great, but I think that's fairly standard across most Chinese restaurants in SF! The cheque is handwritten in mandarin, worth double checking it.

Fast service, nice food

By Dario P |

The place is informal and the service superfast. We tried fried wonton, beef combination chow mein and lemon chicken, and everything was quite good. The bill was not so clear.

Great food, huge portions it is what it is.

By Lpoolboy26 |

Popped into here on numerous visits to San Francisco and I've never been disappointed. Yes it looks more like a cafe than a restaurant however service is always very pleasant and the food very tasty. I asked for something not on the menu and I was told it could be done with no problems. I had Orange chicken and on another occasion I had salt n pepper chicken. The portions were huge and the food delicious. Price wise this place is cheap around $14 for my chicken dish with rice, a glass of water and a diet coke. The place is spotless, my only issue (not really an issue) is that the staff sit at some tables either peeling veg or chatting quite loudly at times. Definitely a place to try if you want a nice Chinese for a cheap price but great service but without atmosphere.

Soooo Gooood!

By LolaColada3 |

Yum yum, our food was so tasty and fresh, I wanted more! We ordered chicken chow mein, noodles were freshly made. Broccoli beef, meat was soft and scrumptious, orange chicken was crunchy and oh so good, beef fried rice mmm, mmm, mmm! Spicy chicken basil was perfect. I wish I was staying longer in SF just so I can eat here again. I am on a low carb diet lost 7 pounds so far and I couldn't help it, I ate every single bit of food on my plate. I have been indulging with a little pizza and pasta while in SF, eh not as good and sorry I did after but this City Chopsticks was so worth it.

Pay Close Attention To Your Bill.... Shady Practices

By Joey B |

Just ate @ City Chopsticks in SF on Bush Street… good food. Lousy or minimal service at best... I know what I ordered.... & ballpark what it cost... when I get the check, it's about $8 more than I expected... the check is written in Mandarin (?)… I asked the gentleman to explain the check to me... he got upset ... we went over the check line item by line item... the total came out to what I expected... even adding on tax ... then there was an $7.81 charge ... I asked him what that was for... he explains to me "tip"..... NOWHERE on the menu does it say that gratuity is added!... unsuspecting people would add a tip onto what the bill was ... they charged my card the total, then refunded me the $7.81... I explained to them that I was angry at their illegal practices... AND THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND !!!

Excellent non-touristy tasty Chinese food

By AnnaDWellington |

A family of four with teens ate a delicious meal of noodles, Mongolian beef, walnut shrimp here. Great prices compared to those in Chinatown just up the road. Locals were eating here also.

Good food, good service, no fuss

By Chris J |

Simple fast Asian cuisine in a no fuss environment. The service was quick and attentive with no issues. The price is great for the area and well worth the food.

An excellent take away

By scribble |

Decided to pick up a take away from City Chopsticks and we were delighted with the quality of the food. Place isn't much to write home about in terms of decor if you are looking for a sit in meal. However, as a take away you will not be disappointed by the portion size and tasty servings. Would recommend the crispy sesame beef and Szechuan chicken with veg. Place wasn't busy when we went and we didn't have to wait too long for the food but there are also a few ok bars nearby to have a drink while you wait if you don't want to phone your order through.

Nice Hunan Lunch for Family

By Alan A |

This restaurant, on Bush Street at the corner of Taylor, was a nearby find from our hotel. Though nothing to write home about with it's decor, the food was quite tasty and very easy to get to on foot. As a family of seven, we ordered multiple dishes to share and of the many, only the beef and snow peas was unappealing. The others were very satisfying for our San Francisco Asian cuisine experience. We noticed they provide free delivery so if you don't even want to leave your hotel room, it seems they will bring it to you if you're in the area. No reason found not to go back. Have your chopsticks ready!

A Gem on Nob Hill

By UStravelmaxx |

Dine-in or carry-out. City Chopsticks offers delivery and orders online . This is a quaint, small restaurant near the corner of Bush and Taylor streets with an extensive Chinese menu. This is not your fancy Chinese restaurant where you have cloth covered tables and napkins, but it is a friendly, clean place for lunch or dinner. Try the walnut shrimp as an entree or an appetizer to share. Menu items are ordered a la carte, so if you don't want rice, you don't have to pay for it. They do offer alcoholic beverages like beer and wine. The portion sizes were substantial and the prices were reasonable. The walnut shrimp was $11.95.
