Wanted to experience a wonderful meal and watch fireworks, since they advertised fireworks in their parking lot sectioned off with hay bales and music. The service was so slow, 40 minutes until we got our drinks. Almost missed the fireworks but was able to get out there. However, there was no hay bales, nothing but a parking lot and trees locking the view of the fireworks. But the worse part is they charged an extra 10% on the meal for this evening. I am from Florida and was very excited to experience this. So dissappinted.

We went as a group of six, expecting a fun place with good food. It was a recommendation from the locals. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We ordered the tasting menu (60$ per person). We thought this would be the best that the chef could offer. The appetizers arrived without plates. After about ten minutes, we asked for plates. Only five plates came with no promise of the sixth! Eventually the sixth plate arrived. The appetizer selections were mostly salad. Not impressive. The eggplant appetizer had almost no taste. We had asked for one of the sauces to be served on the side. It was not! The pasta second course had three pastas. One was tasty. The main dishes were generally good. The salmon was good but small. The lamb and duck were tasty. The duck seemed to be a whole duck. The desserts were good. The chocolate cake was excellent. The atmosphere has potential but it was not pleasing. It is loud. A train goes by regularly with a loud honk. Overall, it did not seem that the servers cared for us. Several servers came to the table but they all seemed preoccupied with other things. Nobody seemed to especially care for our table. The chairs were very uncomfortable. They are very hard and not good for a long dinner.

In reviewing a restaurant I consider food quality, taste and presentation, ambience and service. Considering the excellent reviews that this restaurant has had, the service did not meet my level of expectation. We had to initiate almost every contact with the server asking for refill of the bread, asking again and then explaining "no" we did not ask for wine. Our bartender ended up bringing the salt and pepper and asking how the steak was; whereas, the waitress dropped off the meal and did not check to see if it was prepared to our satisfaction. She did not exchange any pleasantries with us. She wasn't rude just disinterested in serving us. My husband's Veges and steak was excellent; my penne could've used some sun dried tomatoes or other flavor boosters. Would I return? Possibly, because of the open air restaurant and good drinks. Happy hour menu needs improvement along with attention to customer service.

I have enjoyed burgers and salads here for years. BUT, the last time my medium rare burger was so bloody it soaked the bun. I complained and it was replaced by one very dry. So this week I ordered it cooked medium and it was as dry and tasteless as sawdust. I could not eat it and didn't bother to ask for another since I got an attitude last time. Also the salad was inedible. It was soaked with salad dressing described as similar to Cesar but tasted like mayonnaise out of a jar. IF I go back I will never order these items again.

It was so tasty and good that it gave me goosebumps on the top of my head from the first bite. I had the rigatoni with chanterelle mushrooms.....This was my first visit and I had no expectatiopns of this place whatsoever except that several holistic physician friends recommended it highly. At first bite.....seriously....goosebumps, closed eyes and saying OMG in my head.....wow. Would never have expected that. Then I tried several other dishes.....don't know how they do it, but the flavors are amazing, presentation is fantastic and the food is prepared perfectly......and the place was packed to-the-gills with at least 80 people for holiday parties. It was very noisy, but full of energy and the service was still excellent. I will definitely be back to this place on my next trip to Portland. This place rivals the food anywhere.....yes, I'm not kidding. Portland, you now have my attention! Wow.

Our family decided to eat Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant this year. We chose Clarklewis and we were so happy we did! There were 8 in our party from age 6 to age 90. We all had a wonderful time! The food was spectacular and the service was spot-on. Everything was served family style and the waiter was happy to refill anything we wanted. We had mixed drinks that we made perfectly and a couple of different wines that were really nice. We never felt rushed and enjoyed an amazing meal, took home leftovers, and never had to prep or clean up. It was perfect in all ways!

This is a fun restaurant in the gentrified east Portland neighborhood. The garage doors open to let in fresh air. The bar tapas were great while waiting for our table. The dinner menu offered a small but excellent selection. My wife's trout was superb, as was my salmon. Reservations were accepted.

Great food and wine selection; knowledgeable waiters. The atmosphere was very relaxing and inviting. I would definitely go back!

My wife and I had dined in 4 restaurants in Portland during our recent visit, clarklewis is by far the best in our opinion. The restaurant is located to the east of the Willamette River, less than 10 minutes ride from he downtown district. The restaurant has a few glass-paneled garage doors that were open when we arrived. Outdoor seatings are available for warmer months. The environment is rustic and welcoming. My wife is particular about Kir Royal. That night, she had only good things to say about the drink. I ordered beets salad and Salmon entrée, I loved it. My wife had the lamb pasta, Tagliatte, and she absolutely enjoyed it. Wine list is lovely, many selections are from Oregon and Italy. I had a very nice Pinot Noir by Sokol Blosser (Oregon). My wife ordered a white wine (falanghina) from Campania region, Italy. It had a very clean and crisp taste. The ambience is cozy. The service is friendly and efficient. It is without a doubt a great restaurant to visit.

Parking is a little challenging so we recommend Lyft or Uber. The atmosphere is nice but nothing particularly special. It is likely lovely on a warmer day when they have the doors open (although they open onto a street so I don't know if car noise/smell is dominant). The carrot soup and the two desserts we had (butterscotch with salted caramel and then we had some delicious cheesecake concoction) were all really good. The main courses were very disappointing. We had a pasta dish (I think with lamb) that was 1-dimensional and bland. And the risotto wasn't risotto- it was a watery mess without much flavor (they took it off the heat way too early). Picture attached is after I ate the spinach or kale that was in it, which was the only redeeming quality of the dish. Finally, we really dislike places that call out the service or health/wellness tax (here it was 4%- we have seen other amounts at other PDX places) as a separate line item on the final bill. While we appreciate it brings some attention to it, it also is ultimately misleading as to the cost of a restaurant's food/going to dinner there. I appreciate that restaurants are required to charge it but that's the cost of business in Portland (most seem to have integrated it into their dish costs). The online menu doesn't mention it at all, although there was a note on the menu itself that we were given.

I'm not really someone who writes reviews, but I felt compelled to share my first and last experience at Clarklewis. My husband and I decided to have lunch at Clarklewis with a $100.00 gift certificate we had been given by a friend. We each had an old fashioned, along with the cheese board and the beet salad. As our main dish, I ordered the risotto and he had the pork sandwich. The risotto is listed as follows: brussels sprouts, parsley root, sunchokes, purple potatoes, parmesan. As a vegetarian, I strategically ordered the risotto because it was the only entree that didn't have a meat listed in the description. Only after I took a bite did I realize the dish contained small chunks of salmon. The server brought me another risotto, but I had already lost my appetite. She didn't offer an apology, nor did we ask for one. We did ask for the check and were surprised to see that we were still charged for the dish, leaving our total at $91.00. My husband made the manager aware of the situation before leaving, but he did nothing to help our experience. We still have $9.00 on our gift certificate, which will go unused. I would much rather spend $100.00 at Renata or Nostrana.

The service was very slow and I am not sure why as they were not that crowded. The food was excellent - one of the better burgers I have had in the last month. I love the openness of this restaurant.

Dinner on a warm Friday night in summer. The garage-door windows were rolled up to let the outdoors in. Even so, it was loud. We started with a round of pineapple mojitos. it's a nice combination of ingredients but they came in fairly small glasses and needed a little more rum in them. There are a number of intriguing vegetable-centered dishes using local produce prepared on a wood fire that are very tasty and worth ordering. there are pasta dishes that come in 2 sizes; I should have ordered the smaller one because I was unable to eat more than half of my tagliatelle in lamb ragu. Service was good. It was easy to find parking around the corner from the entrance.

Five or six years ago I took my family to ClarkLewis and enjoyed a fantastic dinner. I rated it "AS FINE AS ANY RESTAURANT IS THE NAPA VALLEY". We recently returned to ClarkLewis while visiting Portland from California. My rating has changed. While our waiter was great, recommending wines to pair with our meals, several of the meals were disappointing. My wife and I each ordered Caesar salads and duck breasts. Since we are Italian my wife uses quite a lot of garlic in her cooking, but the home made salad dressing was entirely too garlicy. It made everything which followed taste of garlic. The duck breasts were tough and served in a bowl which made cutting them even more difficult. The rest of our family thought the salmon and Venison they ordered were good, however. Then there was the desserts. While very ornate and composed of many flavors, they were not very good. The chef could have offered one or two traditional options. Sad to day, I may be over ClarkLewis.

We were there for dinner. The menu was small which is actually a good thing- hate it when the menu goes on and on. No specials. Couple of us had the kohlrabi salad which was very good but it didn’t blow me away. Rest of the menu was similar- good solid food but not exceptional. The cod was very good. The pasta was good but not perfect- not al dente which is the way we prefer our pasta. None of the dessert items sounded that great so came home to eat dessert. The place was cozy even though the place could have been cold with so many garage windows. It was also relatively quiet so we can actually have a conversation unlike most restaurants these days. We had a nice view of the water and Portland skyline. The service was professional but not warm. We had a good experience overall.

Over the years, I've come here for Happy Hour, but it has been a while. Tonight, the server we had was odd -- it didn't really seem like he wanted to be there. I was surprised when he showed up at our table -- and I realized he was going to be taking our order. The drink I had didn't taste good at all ... although it sounded good on the menu and looked good when placed on the table. (Their Sangrita recipe.) We went on a slow Monday night, and there was no A/C, only fans, which I kind of liked. It made me feel as if I was in Asia. The salad on the happy hour menu was delicious, the cheese plate less enthralling. It feels like this place has lost its shine over the years, and I would hope they would revisit the whole concept and re-imagine the restaurant.

On a recommendation, decided to try l/c and it was a really good call. After being unable to get into Veritable Quandry or Andina decided to take a short trolley tide across the river. Well worth the trip! I arrived for happy hour without a reservation. No problem. Happy hour red was a Sangiovese that could easily be my go to table wine. Fruity and light. Perfect pairing for my beet and goat cheese salad. Main course was a taglierini with smoked sturgeon in a light creme fraiche. Stunning. All this with a house baked bread that was slightly sour and salty with a wonderful crust. The meal was worth it just for the bread. Will I go back- hell yes!

There were six people in total. We went on a Tuesday evening- and they were not at all busy. Our server was nice but with the exception of 2 salads and desserts, the food was really disappointing. The meat was tough and lacked flavor. The drinks were also very disappointing. I had the worst Margarita I have every had, others with similar types of cocktails were also disappointed. Unfortunately, I don't think any of us will be going back. One of the couples used to come quite often and commented on how much the quality of food had declined.

The good: Our waitperson was lovely and made excellent wine recommendations. The crust on the gluten-free pizza is super tasty! The rest: Slow service and prices. We ordered the salmon tartare, asalad, a pizza, pasta, and dessert. The food was very slow to come out (I believe we spent close to 3 hours here), and we were 3/4 of the way through a bottle of wine by the time our tartare came out. I was slightly taken aback by the quality of some of the dishes, given the higher prices. The pasta was pretty basic and was something I could've made at home (penne and peas, with not much else). The 16% service charge was surprising and confusing. The explanation of the service charge on the bill only added to the confusion...it's still unclear to me who shares in the service charge. If it's divvied up the same way gratuity is, then why the suggestion to tip 20% on top of the 16%? I would've been fine if they had imposed a 20% mandatory service charge across the board and made clear that further tipping is unnecessary.

We went as . group of 7 people. Asked for the sampler one. Food kept coming and coming and coming. Great atmosphere and delicious food. I highly recommend it.

Menu, service and ambience excellent. A small gripe: We were there during "restaurant month". What they showed online before and after our visit not on the "special menu" the night we were there, but was on the regular menu. Bait and switch if an appliance store, small irritant in a restaurant. But well crafted, interesting dishes and knowledgeable servers. Drinks a bit stingy.

This burger is on a gluten-free bun with Havarti and some sort of a carrot slaw with an aoli sauce… It was cooked to perfection, and the gluten-free bun is hands-down the best bun I have ever had in my entire existence. Their chef makes them there apparently… I think I am a regular now! The other dishes that my friends have had when we were there the last two times were all yummy as well.

Nice decor and menu. Live jazz music on the patio Thursdays in the summer. Food was delicious. Sadly the extra slow service and mandatory 16% to the house totally spoiled the experience. Can't recommend.

Ate here on a Saturday night with 13 other business colleagues. If you are a foodie I could see you liking this place. If you like American cuisine, and you are not overly-adventurous don’t risk it. Our party was served family style. There is no such thing as a basic salad here or dessert. Everything is way outside the box at least two standard deviations. We had lamb in three different dishes. I guess it’s considered the new white meat.

Food was fresh and good. Enjoyed the burger, which had a nice smoke flavor. Salads were good as well. Nice ambience and location. Prices were reasonable. Bread was really good! Good spot for a business lunch.

I went to this place with a group of 20 so my results may not be typical. The organizer of the outing insisted we all order the Chef's tasting menu. I left after 3 hours on very hard chairs. Some stayed another hour before the meal ended. We were fed mass quantities without knowing what was next. The food was good but not great or inspired. The leftovers were massive. The service was good but overwhelmed. The place was very noisy but in fairness we have have been guilty of generating a lot of that noise . This would probably be a nice place for 4-6 in a party. Location is in a not so good neighborhood and with Portland's notorious street people problem I was glad we had a larger group.

This is a really good destination located on Water and S.E. taylor. White linen table cloths and service to math. Good cocktails and a good wine list make for a fun fine dining experience.

We had a great business dinner. It was a Tuesday night after 7pm, so not super crowded, and the low noise level was great. We spent 3 hours and had great service the entire time. The salmon was tasty, and my colleagues' plates were wiped clean.

How could I forget about Clarklewis? I went back for the first time after a 5+ year absence, and boy was I happily surprised. The atmosphere and general "feel" of the restaurant is perfect. Clarklewis was one of the original foodie restaurants in Portland and truly helped to shape the modern movement of the city's food scene. They've not rested on any laurels. Instead, they have kept their environment fresh and really interesting. The food - well it's great. From the pastrami to the salads, everything is clean and well presented. For me, the garden salad is the touchstone for a restaurant. It is so hard to get the general garden salad right. The reason - over-dressing, over-nuancing, over-infusing occult flavors - all of these things sound great in theory to "build" a garden salad; but they rarely translate into an edible salad. Clarklewis has taken the garden salad to an art form. The salads they serve a lightly dressed and naturally fresh. They are one of the best things at the restaurant and the hardest menu item for any place to get "right." Finally, the service at Clarklewis is sophisticated and reassuring. Yes, it is Portland - so service is always a bit aloof; and, the server we had at Clarklewis was responsive, informed around the menu and accessible when we needed him. Overall - I re-found Clarklewis and I am super happy about putting the restaurant back in my rotation of "go to" places.

I'd been looking forward to visiting Clarklewis, and I was pleased with my experience. I was disheartened that the restaurant wasn't full, but that fact perhaps contributed to attentive wait staff who were well trained and supremely helpful ~ thank you! Our group of 4 enjoyed our meals, although the hedgehog mushroom truffle pasta was mildly underwhelming. The salmon was the most tender we've ever tasted, and the beets uniquely prepared! The overhead acoustics made conversation a bit of a challenge. It would be great to add some insulation to the ceiling to dampen the noise.

Just a sleepy experience. Nothing I had put a pep to my step or tickled my fancy at all. Food was average. Nothing stood out. Crab salad=salty, lamb ragu=average, pork chop=flavorful but dry and pound cake=ok. Wanted to give a lower score but there is potential.

Near the area where the trailblazers play. This is a nice place to dine but a little pricey. Varied choices on the menu. Entree is just the entree to be served to you but plenty of sides to add on. Lowest entree was clam linguini at a little over 16+. Rest ranged to up in the 30s. Good bar and cozy atmosphere near there.

We were seated in the back behind a panel, no air circulating at all! Did not offer the happy hour menu, thank goodness I had read about it online. Cheese platter did not have much cheese at all. Drinks good.

Went for a company meeting in a rear meeting room. Didn't know what to expect since online reviews have been mixed. Excellent service. Wine selection had unusual choices but staff very helpful regarding options. Salads and deserts were all served family style; very adequate portions; salads slightly out of the ordinary but very tasty. Main courses all perfectly prepared and presented and very adequate quantities (some prior reviewers commented on small portions; ours certainly were not). My pork chop was among the best I've had. I'll be back.

I am usually a total plane jane when it comes to food. A conference I attended rented out this restaurant for the night and so I was along for the ride. I ate every single thing brought out and LOVED it. Amazing good. Amazing mixed drinks. Gorgeous restaurant. I would saw this is off the beaten trail and a must-visit in Portland.

Loved the open front to the street along with the decor. We had a sampling of several appetizers along with several entrees The duck and beef dishes were excellent. I will be back!

Our experience at ClarkLewis could be summed up as good-not great. I liked the chic industrial atmosphere that still managed to come off as welcoming and cozy as well as the exposed kitchen. The aromas from the wood fired ovens were wonderful. Some of the dishes we had were underwhelming and others were fabulous. Grilled escarole salad was very good and octopus while good was a little bland and the portion was quite small in comparison to the large salad. We had the salmon entree which was in fact the best piece of salmon I have ever had (delicious) and the lamb which was ok and again small in portion. Consistency seems to be the issue here. Service was attentive and knowledgable. I would go again, but I'm not rushing back either.

Food was delicious, fresh, original and lovingly prepared. My main dish was spaghetti with mussels and Italian bacon. I had the foie gras as an appetizer. It was the best foie gras I'd ever eaten, and I lived in Europe for over five years. I also loved the Cock and Bull Ginger Beer. Great if you like a pronounced flavor of fresh ginger. I would have given five stars but for the noise level. I realize the idea is for the noise to go along with the industrial vibe of the place, but my objection is on practical not artistic grounds, it was hard to have a conversation sometimes. I realize that Portland has a laid back reputation, but that said I would spruce up a bit more to feel at home here.

We went to Clarklewis last night for a special birthday party and it was fantastic!! The food was excellent--very spring fresh with fiddlehead ferns and morel mushrooms. The steak was wonderful, the portions were ample with a lot of fresh asparagus cooked perfectly. One vegan member of the group was very pleased with the suggestions he received from the waiter to create a special dish for him. Other menu items like the lamb ragu and the pork chop were equally well received. The waiter was excellent, providing perfect service and wonderful suggestions for wine. I love going to Clarklewis anytime but for a special occasion it's the best.

Loved it! Great warehouse look ambiance. Salads were delicious! I had one with kale, peaches, jalepenos, blueberries and goat cheese. Thoroughly enjoyed. Let of lamb was off the charts! Great combination of veggies with the lamb.service was spot on! Made for a great evening and highly recommend.

I had a wonderful squash and parsnip soup and husband had fresh pasta with a lamb ragu sauce. We shared a decadent chocolate and ganache cake. They cheerfully answered menu questions and honored our request to serve a praline crumble on the side (husband has a pecan allergy). Open kitchen was fun to watch and the black painted warehouse interior felt very comfortable. Make sure to check for parking around back and watch your step coming in as there is a bit of a lip at the front door.

Had dinner with another couple and it was wonderful. The atmosphere is cozy. The waiter was top notch professional. The food was superb. I had their salmon dish with roasted potatoes. Fabulous. Try their beet salad too. Desert was hazelnut cheesecake. Yum. We brought two bottles of wine and paid the $20 each corkage fee. They also decanter our wine for us. Parking is available or there's a paid lot next door.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since they opened in 2004… A couple of times a year, and have never been disappointed. Recently we hosted eight of us for Thanksgiving dinner and I thought they did a great job and all of us enjoyed it. They are not necessary perfect… One simple thing they might do is have warmer, nicely heated plates for instance. One suggestion (if you can talk your entire table into it) is order the chef‘s tasting menu… It will include things that you would probably never order ... but when the plates fly out of the kitchen, you’ll likely say: God ... that’s DELICIOUS! 😋

Excellent inner central SE location, great concept, well thought out menu, excellent execution of dishes, superior service, perfectly Portland charm. Enjoy a just about perfect happy hour menu in this industrial chic, cozy and charming former warehouse! Clark and Lewis would approve of their namesake!

I liked the environment although it was VERY noisy. We had a lot of people at our table but you could only hear the person next to you. The food sounds interesting but it isn't very tasty and the portions are very small. I love the idea of Farm to Table but if the preparation is underwhelming it feels more like a gimmick. It is also very expensive but I expected that. We spent almost $1,000 for which I would have loved to have been amazed rather than disappointed.

Atmosphere ? Kind of like the inside of an all-black warehouse. Noise level: much too much ! Service and food : good; not great Prices: mid-30's for halibut or lamb dinner Drinks: pretty good, but expensive

We went to the place with a large group for a business dinner, and it was great. The food is creatives (has a watermelon gazpacho which was a great interpretation) The main dishes (priced around $30) where on spot (had the salmon, which was as expected) The atmosphere in the place (which is a very large space) is very relaxed and welcoming.

This is a cool old warehouse space, with a earthy organic vibe. Cosy and rustic. Wood burning kitchen right in the open for all to see is very cool. Menu features seasonal "farm-to-table" style. Enjoyed a decent dinner here with co-workers one evening. I loved the seafood stew appetizer and wish i would have ordered it for my entree, as the pasta i did order was not so fab.

We ate at clarklewis the night the 3rd snow storm hit. It was magical eating a wonderful meal, in a comfortable low-key restaurant watching the snow fall. Outstanding service and wine. We ate there on a previous visit to Portland and the experience lived up to our memories. I have food sensitivities and they willingly adjusted my dinner to fit—it was much appreciated.

A lovely spot for a restaurant, not a bad view out at Water street. Minimalistic design with outstanding food, wine and service. Appetizers included clams and a artisan cheese plate. The bread served on the table was fabulous, light and moist with a chewy crust. We had the pear and apple salad. Very tasty with champagne vinaigrette and candied nuts on argula. For the pasta there were three delicious choices one vegetarian with pesto, one ricotta ravioli and a lamb ragu with shredded lamb. The fish was salmon filet with veg. The half of a roasted duck was slightly overcooked and not pink at all, but it was still juicy and tasty and the root vegetable puree was delicious. For dessert we shared a chocolate stout cake with ice cream. All the food was great the specialty drinks were lovely especially the "mod to the Queen" Four beers on tap. So many wines and three house wines, glasses, for nine dollars you can have a white, a bubbly or a red. Our waiter had an attitude, but his service was good, just trying. Parking.

The food was amazing. Among 5 of us, we covered many of the choices & with lots of sharing going on, no one was disappointed. The wine list is a bit pricey. Service was very good. The only disappointment was the dessert menu; none of the 5 of us was excited enough about any of the choices to order dessert. And there wasn't any good option for the lactose-intolerant member of the group. Would absolutely consider returning

In Portland on business and had a great dinner at ClarkLewis. The food was so well prepared and a very notable wine list. I really liked the vibe in the restaurant, very lively very Portland. I'd for sure go back.

While travelling for business, stopped in for dinner. Lucy the barkeep recommended the Summer salad & Wild Halibut entree. FANTASTIC! The summer salad was served with a tomatillo base that had a perfect amount of heat for me, and the halibut came with local morels that paired perfectly with the fish. The meal was absolutely spectacular, and the use of local ingredients was creative and inspired! At this rate Lewis might go d himself permanently as the second banana.

I brought my husband for his 50 th birthday lunch. I had the Lamb Ragu and pasta. Fresh, bright, and the Lamb brings a richness. The fresh pasta showed through. He had the braised beef and vegetables. He loved it, and so did I! We shared the middle cheese plate for a start and it was delicious and the cheeses available were unique and something I would not normally get to sample. The best was the dessert. The mouse and porter cake with semi sweet chocolate ice cream. One of the best things I have ever had...ever. We shared that, but I'm going in sometime again for that soon. The staff were friendly and informative. A great lunch date!

It took 1hour &45 min to get our food. Floor was unorganized and chaotic.. cocktails took 30 min. Descent food, small portions, but not worth long wait and they tack on a 16% service charge—

After visiting the Japanese Gardens, we were looking for a place for lunch and stumbled upon clarklewis. First, we ordered the Stoneboat Farm’s Canteloupe Gazpacho. It was so refreshing with a nice kick, a little sweet and spicey. I had the Market Green Salad with the farm egg and loved it! The sunflower seed granola added a nice crunch. Hubs had the market Bruchetta. He loved it. Our lunch, while filling, did not make me feel stuffed and left room for something sweet later in the day. This was our first visit here, as we are visiting Portland. I’d love the recipe for the cantaloupe gazpacho. Parking is free. Come check it out.

The 4 of us had the chef choice on the menu, so we ate and ate the many items that were brought to us. The asparagus soup, the beet & avocado salad, the radish & strawberry salad, the salmon entree and the cheesecake were some of the best. All the dishes were perfectly prepared. All of the food was fresh with a unique twist of sauces and combinations. The dishes flavors were bright, original and perfectly balanced with acidity and sweetness. We are looking forward to another trip.

Joined a friend for lunch and could not have been more pleased. Service was top-notch with several different team members working our table. Small menu, but numerous delicious items. We both had the "lunch special" for $17 which included a cup of butternut squash soup, rigatoni and chocolate dessert with berries. Yummy! We didn't feel rushed, and the restaurant was not at capacity, but we enjoyed every minute. Thank you clarklewis!

Every time I bike to clarklewis, I am happy with my time there and my meal. Today I biked to PDX NW city time for glasses work at Visage Eyewear on Johnson Street (check it out - good people). I biked at noon time and needed a cool bite. I ate chilled carrot and apricot soup, drank Italian rose/Podere Ruggeri Corsini Rosin, and a simple olive oil/lemon tossed salad (tad on wet side). Brian went out of his way to make sure I was hydrated and attended to. Lovely. Thank you front-of-the-house boys. Kudos. Mary

We were looking forward to a nice lunch at Clarklewis. Initially we couldn't find a parking place, so one of us dropped the other off to go in and get a table. The other one who was driving circled many, many blocks for many minutes and never found a parking place. I don't mean a free space, I mean ANY space. Ultimately the first one had lunch alone (a very good lunch, but too little too late), and the second one came back later to pick him up. I was the second one -- the driver -- and I later had a nice lunch at another restaurant in a different part of town where it's possible to park. Will never go to Clarklewis again, sadly, because it actually is a good restaurant, but it is forever off my list now.

The dining room is dark and noisy. The food was very good. The service was great. Small but well thought out wine list with a decent amount of Oregon wines. The salads were a hit at our table as were the fish dishes (sturgeon and jack). If possible, sit by the large overhead glass garage doors - these are the only windows and offer some light and a certain amount of escape from the noise (some sound baffling would be nice as all the hard surfaces create quite a din of noise). Prices are high, portions are small but it is excellent food.

I had heart great things about this restaurant and it did not disappoint. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. There did not seem to be a "bad" table. There are large garage door along one wall that open up to the outside. The place can get noisy. The menu was on the small side, but I would have tried any of the selections. The foie gras appetizer was top notch. We had the rockfish and the lamb for entrees and both were excellent. Our server was attentive and helpful. Great experience here.

Went for dinner with family. It’s a very nice interior with some outdoor seating. The service was very good overall. Food ratings as follows: Ceaser Salad-9.1 (huge amounts of cheese!) Egg Parpadelle- 7.6 Carrots-6.9

Had a small business dinner here with a group of four people. Really like the vibe, cool and hip but not so noisy that you can't hold a conversation. Service was fast and friendly. We did the tasting menu, and most of the many items were excellent to outstanding. Parking here is always a challenge, there are always a huge number of spaces open in the back lot but due to aggressive towing signage from the other businesses you wonder if and when you can use them. In my mind this is one of the best places in PDX but you typically won't find it on the "best of" lists...which is fine, because I enjoy not having to stand in line for an hour or make a reservation six months out.

We went on a freezing night in November. At our table for five I think three of us ordered the lamb ragu. It was sooooo good. Perfect for a brisk night. Even on a Wednesday night it was packed which made the acoustics a bit challenging. The service was excellent; a watchful eye but not overbearing. We will return!

Coming from out of town a few times a year, my friends often find new places to visit, wine tastings etc. This particular night they suggested Clarklewis and so we read some reviews and thought this could be a winner, even if it wasn't the newest place in town. Boy were we happy we choose this fantastic place on a cold rainy Tuesday night. We were greeted with smiles, had some great cocktails (if you love ginger as I do, go for the Portland Mule!!!) and a superb meal. Our waitress, Lani, was bright and cheerful and extremely helpful in explaining the dishes and letting us choose a variety of dishes that the three of us shared family style. The kitchen timed the dishes perfectly and we could not of had a better meal. My friends will definitely be going back in my absence and we will all return when I am next in Portland. Well Done!!! Thank you.

Visited Clarklewis withe a group of friends and had a great time. The food is excellent Along with cocktails and and a bottle of superb wine. Located out of the fray. GREAT SPOT

It had been a year or two since we had been here. Remembering great food, we went with another couple for the $29 March Dining 3-course menu, and we tried all the offerings on that menu. The food wasn't bad, just OK and nothing memorable. None of us made an effort to clean our plates. We found ourselves discussing other Portland restaurants. Portland has too much competition in this price range for us to go back to clarklewis. And the noise was so loud that the 4 of us could barely hear each other on a week night when the restaurant was not full.

This was an amazing night. The ambiance of the restaurant was stunning. Decorated for the holidays. Simply beautiful. The service was outstanding. Very attentive for our large group. The food was delicious! We opted for a family style event allowing the group to share many different options paired with wine. It was spectacular! I highly recommend this restaurant for couples, happy hour, or business dinners.

The industrial look is highlighted by huge doors that can be opened to bring the outside in. Service was good as was the food, however I only gave them 3 stars because they were out of everything on the menu that I wanted to order. We were there at normal dinner time (7pm) so it was quite a suprise they were out of so many menu items. The whole party ended up with the same entree as a result, but it was very good. They specialize in local fresh ingredients which may make supply an issue at times. We will go back as it was an enjoyable evening and we liked the venue, service, and the food we did have and we will see if they actually have what is on the menu next time.

This is one of my favorite Happy Hour spots! Get some of their fantastic eats minus the big ticket! The Farro Risotto is divine!

Tried this place with some friends! Everything was delicious! The bone marrow was the best I've had! This is worth every dollar spent!

Had a delicious lunch, loved the ambiance and the service. Had a very nice, crisp Clarklewis white wine and the bread from Central Bakery was truly amazing-now we need go to the bakery as well. Pastrami sandwiches were a hit!We will go back to this restaurant again for lunch but want to try dinner as well

We started the evening with drinks at the bar from Justin and the Clarklewis team. We ordered two dozen of the Hammersley oysters, brining and sweet between three of us. Then we enjoyed the Wagyu appetizer. It was tougher than we expected. For the mains we shared gluten-free pizza and gluten-free pasta and sipped a Ridgecrest Pinot noir. We were very happy with everything. Please note: today we cooked the gluten-free pizza that was left over fried it up in an oiled pan and then broiled it with cheese some thing the restaurant should definitely consider doing & an egg on top. A tasty Tuesday Valentine’s brunch at home. Brilliant ingredients in all of the food last night. The care at CL is always present from the entire restaurant. Enjoy V-Day💕 Mary & Ned W.

The cocktails are awesome. However the menu consisted of things I would never eat. I know it is my opinion but I will never go back for food. If you go, make reservations! No bad tables. Menu was duck. Pork belly, bone marrow..... Even the salads were wired. So, I am an older woman and this is not my style. For those that like the different meals, I'm sure it would be great!

We were here for a special birthday dinner and all our expectations were met. The food was locally sourced and prepared in an innovative fashion that made the evening memorable. The service was excellent, and the open, re-purposed warehouse space gave the night a fun atmosphere. It was also fun to check out the East Portland area, undergoing a renaissance into an area spotted with trendy and tasty eateries and interesting business ventures. Worth a trip across the river.

This is a convenient location away from downtown, nice atmosphere. The food was good but not outstanding. Appetizers were really lovely - you had the soup as a comfort food option and the salad as a lighter option; that was really nice. Entrees tasted good but the seafood one was really small so order based on how hungry or experimental you are. The dessert was really good, unusual, yummy, not too heavy yet still felt like small comfort.

We had a group of 20 and had the chef's tasting menu. The food was wonderful. Each course. We had so much food. My tip is not to ask for seconds or more of any course. I suggest sampling each course. There were many courses, meat, fish, pasta, salad, dessert. All were wonderful. The wine selection was good too, as well as cocktails. The service was wonderful and to our surprise gratuity was not automatically added. It was fairly hot in Portland while we were there, and the restaurant either does not have air conditioning or did not use it as it is open walls on one side. We were fairly warm, but the experience was wonderful. I had been recommended this hotel by American Express Centurion as being one of the best in Portland for dinner, and they were right.

Visited CL for the first time in 2 years. Our dinner took 3 HOURS! Simply too long to be seated on their hard chairs. Lamb was "good" but served with massively overcooked mushy beets, three of our entrees, although all different, were served without creativity. Just a center point of proteins surrounded by a slide of various coupled sauces. The halibut plate looked like the sauce was spread hastily with a boot heel. The $24 cheese plate cam with three cheeses that could not have been more than 1-2 ounces each, and I'm being generous. This place is NOT inexpensive, which brings me to the straw that broke the camel's back, a labor SVC charge of $21.38, totally unrelated to the tip. We were told that the owner implemented this to make up for him needing to start paying a more livable wage as Oregon has directed. For a restaurant with these prices, this is completely insane and if you need to make an even bigger margin, make it up some other way. We will never be back to this CL given this experience, there are way too many excellent restaurants in Portland to patronize this establishment. Go to Ox, go to St. Jack, go to Higgins.

We returned to clarklewis as part of PDX Dining Month. Our plan had been to return at an other time, but conflicts seemed to keep that from happening. Overall, our impression was the same as our first visit. The food is very good and quite tasty. Service and presentation remain excellent. The restaurant is a bit noisy, however. We both had spaghetti with lamb ragu, although we had hoped for it with tagliatelle. While very good, I suspect that the tagliatelle would have enhanced the flavors. My only disappointment was that I felt the lamb should have been a bit more prominent in the ragu. We recognize that we were having the PDX Month menu and that often restaurants will cut down on the proportions (although the portions themselves were quite generous). Seating at our reserved hour was prompt and service began promptly. We were not rushed through dinner and appreciated the fact. We plan to return when we can choose from the normal menu.

We stumbled upon Clarklewis as we were trying to find a restaurant for our last dinner in the city. This was one of the few places that had a reservation available for Friday night. The food was phenomenal. Ingredients were fresh, presentation was elegant, and the dishes themselves was just delicious. We had oysters and then the tuna and salmon entrees. For dessert, we had the donuts which were spectacular. This is a five-star place, if the service was improved a bit. While the staff and waiters were polite and professional, it took a REALLY long time to get our food. The appetizer (just oysters on the half shell) took forever. The dining room was dark and hot. I know that the staff was doing the best they could because everyone was busy, but it felt like they were understaffed or missing a strong manager. Finally, the menu contains a detailed description of the service charge. I appreciate the commitment to fair wages and I wouldn't change the policy itself, rather I would make the description simpler.

Just had another excellent meal at CL. I appreciate thefact that you can order 1/2 a pasta dish to go with an entre. The menu is small 4 pastas, 5 entrees. The pasta with lamb ragu was excellent and the my whitefish with clams was excellent. The winner of the day was the pork shank-slow cooked, massive and so so tender. Wine list is a fit high, but they do have some decent $25 bottles of white. Lots of hard surfaces, so it can get a little loud.

I stopped by here for a bite and wine. I ended up being educated about the wonderful foods they had to offer. Excellent food and service. They mostly cater to carnivores but there are some seafood and veg offerings.

This is my second time here, first time for dinner. I like the atmosphere, the industrial look. Waiters were fun and friendly. Had the tasting menu. The appetizers were refreshing! The pastas were ok. Fish was good but smells too fishy. Desserts was good. Skipped the lamb. Would come back but would not order tasting menu again. I wished the waiter had told us that the tasting menu is too much for 2 person and discourage us from doing so. The trick of a happy customer is to make sure they have just enough food. This is a classy restaurant, not IHOP or Denny's. Too much of a good thing is not good.

Painfully slow service. My pizza was oversauced and undercooked. My son enjoyed the pappardelle and the staff were apologetic for the slow service. We were offered a complimentary dessert, so ordered a dessert at the end of service… but the waiter brought us an additional different dessert we didn’t order rather than comping what we ordered.

Hands down one of the best places to eat in Portland. If you can swing by during their daily happy hour you will be blown away by their food and it is very inexpensive but allows you to sample almost everything on their menu. I went with a few friends at the tail end of their happy hour. Our server was fantastic and you could tell he loved his job. We had the soup of the day (carrot vichyssoise) which was probably one of the most delicious soups I have ever had, spring green salad (unlike most places the salad had more than just greens it in and the dressing was light but super tasty), grilled lamb ribs (the meat fell off the bone it was cooked perfectly), cavatappi (which was great) and lamb tartare (absolutely fantastic and well worth the full price if you missed the happy hour). All of these items were between $4 to $7 per plate and easily filled up two people. The other people I was with ordered off the dinner menu and had the tagliatelle and cavatelli pasta which was phenomenal. They make everything in house and you can just taste the freshness. The decor is awesome and the perfect spot to go to on a summers evening as all of the windows roll up. Overall this was what every restaurant should strive for: amazing servers, mind blowing fresh food and a gorgeous atmosphere. Trust me you will not be disappointed!

Went here on the recommendation of a business associate. So glad we did. We decided to try the four-course chef's choice and glad we did. OMG they give you way too much fabulous food and you almost feel bad about not eating it (not really). What a fun night. The Beet salad was amazing. The Steelhead cooked to perfection with a wonderful sauce topping it. The lamb was a touch tough but the flavor was out of this world. The chef finished it off with a Vanilla Cheesecake that was the best I have eve had and a Dark chocolate cake. both with homemade ice cream on the side. The service was over the top and a shout out to the bartender who kept our wine glasses full to the point of having to cut ourselves off. Lmao. Will definitely be back and for that matter can't wait!!!!

We selected Clarklewis for our daughter's rehearsal dinner because that is where she and her husband got engaged. I cannot praise Brian enough for working with us -- we had a private space that seated 25 but had 26 and 1/2 (baby) to accommodate -- and he made it work. The service was impeccable and the food was excellent. Really nice to have family style for 3 of 4 servings because everybody gets a taste and the pasta is very, very good. They were extremely easy to work with in terms of the entrees and wine/beer. They put the customer first.

We had salmon and the artisan cheese dish. Port wine and their peach dessert. The salmon dish was good. Can't say great. It was flavorful and properly cooked, but no wow effect. The artisan cheese plate did have a variety of cheese, but nothing wow. As for the peach dessert, there was a lot of other stuff on the plate, save and accept the peaches.

Had a working lunch meeting here recently. Food was delicious and quickly prepared. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Restaurant has warm, cozy and inviting atmosphere with all the wood and working fire in the kitchen. Noise is not an issue (obviously important for meeting). I had a quinoa bowl with poached egg. Flavor was lovely, with hint of citrus, all the ingredients were fresh and it had great texture. Highly recommend it.

Clarklewis opened in 2003 as part of the new wave of farm to table restaurants Portland has fostered since then. We went several times when it was new, but had not been back in a number of years with all the other newer good choices in this city. I had dinner last night with my wife and two friends. I must say everything we had was excellent and the service was very good, if slightly slow-paced (but we weren't in a hurry). We started with cocktails - I had a Negroni that included house-infused strawberry gin that was excellent (not as bitter as some) and an oversize ice cube. I brought my own bottle of wine and it was properly decanted and served ($20 corkage). There was excellent complimentary bread assortment served. We had a charcuteri platter that had some delicious meats. Three of us split two radicchio salads which was plenty and also very good. For mains one of us had salmon, and the other three spaghetti with lamb ragú. No complaints here. We were full at this point and skipped desert. This visit was a reminder to revisit some of the older venues and not just the hottest new places.

Great date night with a real Portland vibe. Excellent quality means that it is a little more expensive, but worth the splurge!

Since its opening several years ago, we've considered clarklewis one of Portland's best places. But having dined there again since a year ago, our good impressions have faded. It's not the same original culture. We checked the Portland Dining Month menu online in early March, and liked the clarklewis choices for this special menu. We especially looked forward to the NW seafood stew as one of the appetizer choices. It was a tough reservation but we finally booked a Saturday night table. Upon ordering we were informed the seafood stew was 'no longer available' as a dining month appetizer. I pulled out my phone and it was still listed on the official dining month website. When we asked the server why it was no longer available, we were given a non-answer and it felt like we were being chastised for inquiring about it. We asked for more time and looked around at several tables and saw many had ordered the dining month entree choice, the tagliatelle with lamb ragout. But the portion size was clearly the 'small' version that was on the regular menu for just $14. In short, we felt the restaurant had cheapened out for the PDM menu and we just ordered from the regular menu, which incidentally offered the NW seafood stew! But upon delivery of the stew we were disappointed to find only two kinds of seafood in the stew, mussels and clams. Any other restaurants typically serve 4-6 different seafoods including a fish offering or two in their stews. Without citing more similar examples, I just want to say we were left with an impression that clarklewis has enjoyed immense popularity for many years, and this may have led to more of a corporate like culture where costs and profits seem to be taking precedence in the total diner experience. The restaurant is difficult for conversation which has always been the case with its open space and hard surfaces and closely spaced tables. This last visit was particularly hard for conversation as we were seated next to a party of 12, many of whom were literally yelling in order to be heard by all at their table. The food was just average, not bad but not with the creativity and flavor surprises we recall from our experiences in the past. Cmon clarklewis, don't be a sellout, as this is a cardinal sin in Portland, a city whose residents are particularly sensitive to such corporate greed.

What a wonderful night with my family in honor of my nephew die his law school graduation. Our dinner was exceptional. Our server was very knowledgeable about our different courses and we all left feeling full and satisfied. Everyone enjoyed the soup, salads, lamb pasta, yum, steak, halibut, which were prepared with exciting sauces and sides and onto dessert. All of the family was impressed and would definitely return again.

I would compare ClarkLewis with the best restaurants in the Napa Valley. The food is fabulous and the wait staff very professional, courteous and helpful. We visited our son who recently moved to Portland and found ClarkLewis on the web. It is located in and industrial area of Portland. The room is very modern, large and open with exposed brick walls and a long wall of windowed loading dock doors. It has an open kitchen. The décor is simple and modern. The brown bread with salted butter was very good. My wife enjoyed the parsnip and apple soup. I and another guest enjoyed the cheese plate. I had the pave steak with mushrooms and crab which was tender and delicious. My wife had the lamb roast. She loves lamb, and this lamb satisfied her. Another of our party had the wood fired salmon which she enjoyed. Our son had the vegetarian spaghetti which he enjoyed immensely. The olive oil cake (which I have had in other restaurants) for dessert was fabulous--moist with a very nice, subtle taste. My only criticism, and it is a very small one, is that the roasted potatoes which were delivered late with the explanation that the chef forgot to plate them were very dry (no doubt because the chef forgot them). We cannot wait to return to ClarkLewis next time we are in Portland.

we have eaten at clarklewis several times in the past. This time was a disappointment. the food was mediocre and so was the service. The atmosphere is pleasant enough but does not make up for the rest. Overpriced for what it is. My husband and I both had the salmon, which was overcooked and the side of faro with vegetables mashed into a porridge like product was bland and unappealing. I also found annoying the practice that the menu listed the main course at $30, the small print at the bottom informed you that there was an additional tax of some 3.6 percent "for the kitchen stuff." This is disingenuous and reminds me of certain airline practices.

Visited with large group. Seated in an area with some privacy which was nice. Wide choices on menu. The salads were very large and we used them to share. Quite tasty. Nice wine list. Not fancy or large but fit the bill. I had the lamb served with beans. It was prepared well and very good. The server was very good an accommodating. He made recommendations and helped make the meal a success. Nice environment as well. Will use again.

Four of us enjoyed lunch here. We were seated on a wooden table, near the open kitchen. Food and service was excellent. Noise is prevalent. Ask for a table near the windows, away from the crowds.

I visited this restaurant with colleagues to socialize, nothing overt formal. The layout of the restaurant is great, it utilizes the space very well. Service was wonderfully attentive, several people helped throughout the night like a family as opposed to feeling like we could only speak to "our server". The food was fresh and delicious. The Fig & Tomato is out of this world. I could make a meal of it if the portion were a little bigger. The figs were perfectly fresh and sweet, the tomatoes acidic, and the balsamic savory with a fresh plume of burrata in the middle to provide a creamy texture and blend the flavors perfectly. Can you tell I liked that one? For my main I had the large portion of Tagliatelle with Lamb Ragu. The Ragu makes the dish. The pasta was delicious and cooked PERFECTLY. Just enough resistance to make it hearty without being chewy/undercooked. The Ragu tasted like it had been slow-cooking all day. The lamb was tender, the flavors were bold, but no one flavor overpowered another. For dessert, the cheesecake is top notch. It came with a side of decadent berry-swirled ice cream on a bed of crushed cashews. The texture of the ice cream and cashews was delightful. The cheesecake itself was dense, but light. I never know such a thing was possible. The flavor was perfect and while there were berries served with it, I enjoyed about half the cheesecake plain. It was heavenly.

Dined here for dinner. We were seated right away for we had reservations. Atmosphere is very modern and cold feeling. Extremely Noisy!!! Sad to say but it was almost like being at dance club but at a dinner table struggling to have a conversation. Menu options were limited. Food presentation was good however, taste was bland. Service was ok. At least we can say we tried it.

A visit to Clarklewis with hopes of a great meal and relaxing time during this horrific pandemic and election year. This evening was a continuation of 2020. Other than the bottle of wine (not produced by the restaurant), nothing else was a bit memorable. Our waiter never introduced himself so for the entire evening we were speaking to a masked person with zero personality and less skill as a server. There was one selection of Cabernet on the menu which we selected and then we were advised that the only bottle of our choice was open and 1/2 full so another Cab was offered which as previously mentioned was the best part of the meal. The only fish choices on the menu were Sable fish (Cod) and King Salmon. We choice one of each. Unfortunately the Chef could not cook the Salmon without butter (which was our first indication that the meals were not going to be great), Thus we both opted for Sable fish (Cod), Again bad decision (should have stuck with pasta), You would expect the fish too be flaky, wrong, how about mussy like being in water before being served. The salads were (rutabaga and the other broccoli) heavy garnished in sauce which mask the flavor of the vegetable. I could go on but the bottom line was for a bill of almost $160 for this meal ranked at the bottom of my restaurant experiences (coverings more than 15 countries.)

Interesting decor however dining experience interupted by loud traffic and several loud trains. Service was slow. All 4 of us had pasta dishes. While pasta was cooked appropriately, 3 of 4 sauces were bland and unexciting. We shared the carrot and beet salad. Both were disappointing and extremely light on the featured vegetable . Overpriced.

Bad day for the kitchen Food out slowly, with cold appetizers coming last of all. Carrot appetizer very lovely presentation but the spice was excessively hot and itnerefed with the taste of the dish. The Caesar salad was also very pretty but actually too heavily spiced- as in hot- to eat, and I actually sent it back. Unusual, as I had had fine experiences there before on more than 4 occasions;

If you're looking for a quintessential "Portland" dining experience without overcrowding or pretension, try this place. My wife and I love coming here for just about any reason. The food is always excellent and service is superb. The menu is a nice mix of locally organic sourced ingredients combined in a classic pacific nw gourmet style. The restaurant always has plenty of parking and will happily cater to kids whims if you bring them. The only complaint I would have is the menu doesn't change that much. We like to eat around 6pm since we have kids and there are almost always tables available even on a saturday evening. The place does tend to get crowded around 7-8 though. From the moment you walk in the smell of the wood fire oven is overwhelming in the best sense of the word. The ambiance is not too loud but also definitely not boring. We've tried the tasting menu several times and the chef was kind enough to withhold any seafood dishes since neither of us like seafood. Try the arugula salad if available. Love it!

Our party of four arrived on time for our 6:15 pm reservation. We ordered one round of cocktails/wine and placed our food order as soon as they would take it — about 6:30. Our orders were off the set price dining month menu - nothing special. Our appetizers took forty minutes and our entries didn’t arrive until 7:45! We were enjoying our conversation, but we got very hungry! We ate quickly (we always do) but we didn’t get out of the restaurant until after 9 PM. It’s too bad because the food was exceptionally good.

Awesome food but the best was the location with the large open window and rustic building feel located in the industrial area of Eastside PDX. Good waitstaff. Highly recommend!

On two previous occasions we arrived early for our 5:30 reservation. The first time we were seated and had a cocktail in the dining area table and the second time it was similar with a bit less enthusiasm. The last time, this past Friday, we were put in the happy hour section which we did not mind except that it was so noisy, we asked to be moved to a table in dining area and have a drink but were told we could wait in the foyer and sit, no drinks, now nibble, nothing. We left. I will say that the first time we were there the waiter was outstanding, the second time was a challenge with the waiter not wanting or even noticing us until we waved him down. The last time, and I mean the last, the seating person and the manager that night, were not willing to adjust in any way to what they felt was the RULE. Sorry, but one needs to be aware that this can be the luck of the draw. The food is excellent but the service and interaction is inconsistent.

This restaurant is generally well reviewed by the Oregonian and the Portland Monthly. So we looked forward to our visit for lunch. The receptionist was friendly and seated us right away -- the restaurant was about 1/3rd full. It took quite some time before our waitperson came to our table. Unfortunately she did not seem enthusiastic in any way. Made an initial poor impression which did not approve during the course of the lunch. I shared a beet salad with a companion; unfortunately, it was bland in flavor. Probably I should have asked for vinegar and oil. My main course was a lamb ragu with tagliatelle. It looked good upon arrival but was just fair at best. Like the salad, it was under seasoned. Would we go back? Maybe. After all, this was our first visit. We were there the Monday after Christmas and, perhaps, they did not have their best in place.

Nestled across the Willamette River from downtown Portland in a warehouse district, this open kitchen deserves its reputation as one of the city's best bets. Granted we went on a weeknight, (thus circumnavigating the issues of too-small-a-kitchen for the space) our dinner was delightful. We opted for the tasting menu and it was ample! The generous portions were executed flawlessly, staff was friendly and helpful, and the wine selections were spot-on. This is a keeper.

We arrived after fighting horrible traffic and rain to this converted warehouse not knowing exactly what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm feeling of the entire place and the friendly staff who graciously seated us and gave us time to relax and settle in. We ordered house bubbles (drier than prosecco but similar) and relaxed. After a fashion, we ordered our"Little Gem" salad of gorgonzola, candied walnuts and apples, which we split. The salads are large enough to do that and not feel as though you want more. For main courses we had a most tender pork loin and Painted Hills bavette steak cooked to perfection medium rare with a most tasty onion spread. I accompanied it with the house read. Perfection. Everything was delicious. For dessert we had a plate with two delicate and tasty cheeses along with great coffee. We were never rushed and the place filled up and become somewhat noisier. Finally, their menu changes daily based on what is available in the marketplace. So, if you go there often, you will never be bored or even familiar with the choices.

I immediately loved the decor and ambiance right when I stepped inside: a warehouse with an open kitchen, a fireplace and lots of wood- modern yet modest. Dimly lit with candles to create a nice romantic setting in an upcoming hipster part of town. The brussel sprouts appetizer with a bottle Patty Green Pinot was a perfect start. Gotta take advantage of all the Willamette Valley goodness! The tagliatelle pasta was homemade and heavenly. Lastly, the troll caught salmon was one of the best I have ever had. So fresh, light and perfectly prepared to temperature request. I'm sold and can't wait to return!

We went during Portland restaurant month and had their 3 course meal with salmon. Everything was very delicious and we thought it was good value for the money. Service was excellent. It is a little noisy and there are not really any quiet tables. We chose to sit at a window and enjoyed the light and the passers by

The place is LOUD. The atmosphere is unusual, non-traditional -- just plain odd. It's located in a 'warehouse' where they chop their wood in the entryway -- did I mention this place is loud? The food was slightly better than average and the waitstaff is attentive.

I had given up on this restaurant last summer, poor service and awkward menu. Thought we’d give it one more chance at lunch. Very limited menu, but plenty of pork belly can be added to anything. Ordered a hamburger which was good meat and bun, charged $1 for a green tomato, and Costco mixed baby lettuce sitting by itself on a plate. Completely undressed and not rinsed, bits of slimy pieces. Sent it back for a piece of lettuce for the burger, got exactly the same thing! Bagged lettuce during the prime farm to table season is unforgivable! This space needs a new owner and innovative chef, then we might go back.

I had a very good lunch with business associates in Portland. The vibe was cool, the open air concept fresh and the food was tasty. The only slightly negative was the service. Our server was good not great. Overall a good lunch experience. I would recommend.

We've eaten here many times. Did so again last night. Our thoughts: 1. Beet salad with turmeric aoli and avocado spread: Wow! A++ Best ever. What a way to start a dinner! 2. Basil pesto on linguini (my spouse's dish): A+ Perfect flavors. A treat. 3. Ravioli with Padron peppers: A grade: Outstanding. Rich creamy sauce. Peppers lent the perfect touch of heat. Wow! 4. Artichoke with breadcrumbs and dipping sauce: C Disappointing. Too many crumbs and the 'choke had far too little "meat" on the leaves. But the sauce was good. 5. Thin-sliced turnip with caponata and bacon: C- Very disappointing. Caponata wasn't flavorful. The bacon was a disaster: Practically raw, and all that cold fat on it just ruined the dish. We're mostly Vegan (after eating meat for decades), but sometimes eat fish and dairy, and very rarely will eat some meat on a dish if it's sort of an accompaniment to the dish. But the bacon here was awful. 6. Blueberry Sorbet with chili-drizzled honey: A grade. Very fun. 7. Even the bread is good: It's dark enough that we could tell it had lots of whole grains in it. Thank you! Whole grains taste much better than white wheat flour, and have a much lower glycemic index (lower blood sugar), which is better for a nation of Diabetics and prediabetics. The kitchen staff works its butt off, and are very talented. Our server was attentive but sort of an amateur/newbie. She was fine, but I can understand some of the comments about less-than-perfect servers. The ambience is great. I love this place. And they change the dishes daily, which represents a LOT of work inside the chefs' heads.

I loved the wide open space and big windows, which looked beautiful filled with lighted evergreen trees for the winter holidays. Extra points for the cozy smell from a wood-burning stove or fireplace. I enjoyed a pretty green salad filled with baby lettuces and razor thin vegetables, followed by an excellent spaghetti dish with roasted squashes and walnut pesto. A great place for a relaxed lunch with a close friend or a special dinner.

This restaurant is the most accommodating for larger groups. We had 8 of us including an 8 year old and toddler. We all enjoyed the chef choice meal where you essentially get to try everything on the menu! Come hungry and be prepared for a wonderful meal full of fresh flavors. The roasted carrots were amazing. The steak was crusted with spices, the squash soup was so good our toddler guest ate two bowls and kept asking for more! All four pasta dishes were yummy - one with a ragu, one with a pesto sauce another with a squash sauce. Even the caesar salad was so tasty with raddichio. And then there was desserts- the absolute best tasting rich dark chocolate cake! You must try this restaurant. They are even open for lunch!

Great food at great prices during happy hour. They had a nice selection of plates and drinks, all at very good prices. It wasn't very busy even at 4:30 on a Friday. On a nice day they had the garage-style doors open making it a nice airy space. We had the burgers, and one of us had a salad, all very good. We'll definitely do this again.

I ended up here by myself due to weather and travel issues with my group. But it was so worth my effort to go out on my own. The sommelier was super sweet in seating me on a larger table by myself, and I felt well taken care of! The food was excellent, and they had a fairly comprehensive wine list (not all Oregon), which made me happy! I did try the local wine, but I liked the fact they had other options. I think my only complaint is that I could not find a dessert option but I think I'm being picky! I loved the interiors as well, very moody and private. I would highly recommend.

We had a small wedding reception dinner here. Their private room can seat up to 24 and has a lobby next to the room that acted as a gathering area for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers. Excellent choices for the meal and the chef had made a delicious GF chocolate wedding cake. Ask for Brian. ps: After business hours, parking is available behind the restaurant in the "No Parking" area.

Been hearing great things about this place for a long time. Very mediocre meal last night. Not one of our party was happy. Food was not bad, just not very good for what is available at the same price elsewhere in this well served restaurant scene of Portland. None of us plans to return.

Located in and industrial area in southeast Portland, the restaurant is not much to look at. One side of the restaurant has large garage-type doors that roll-up to allow for open air dining. The interior is stark with tables for four covered in white tablecloths. The bar area is at one end of the large open room and is quite small. The filet was very good and done to perfection.

What a find! Spouse did some research and booked us a table. From the moment we walked in, I was impressed. Staff were welcoming, professional and attentive. We ordered a salad to share. With arugula and quinoa forming the base, the salad surprised with cherries, squash, watermelon radishes and dabs of chèvre. Was dressed with a vinaigrette that brought all those lovely flavors and textures together. Loved the warm bread. Am a sucker for a good crust. I ordered the lamb ragu tagliatelle. Was swoon-worthy with a tomato sauce that stood up to but did not overwhelm the lamb that was as tender as it was generously proportioned. Pasta was toothsome and perfectly cooked. Spouse had the pork chop and ate in bliss. As dated as we were from our entrees, we couldn’t turn down the cheesecake with a sweet and tart compote that delivered the perfect counterpoint to the dessert. The crust was thick and carried a note of ginger. Was just the right size for sharing, though I had to get a little aggressive with my fork to get my share.

Our food was excellent, everything was farm fresh and well prepared, but the trendy industrial style setting makes for some lousy acoustics. We were seated at one table and as soon as the waiter came by he offered to move us even without us asking because he knew we couldn't hear a word he was saying. Also felt the service was slow. Maybe we were just there on a particularly busy, noisy night. I'd go back for the food, but only if I was in the right mood for that sort of atmosphere.

Our first time dining here.Had a delicious anniversary dinner and the food was all scrumptious! It was fun watching the staff work in the open kitchen, but the best part were the flavors which were spot on in all 5 dishes we ordered! Here's what we'd recommend: arugula salad with lardons, avocado, and a fabulous dressing. Salmon pasta with asparagus. Fire roasted lamb with lima beans and baby artichokes. Fire roasted rib eye (a huge portion!) cooked perfectly with potatoes, asparagus, oven roasted carrots (yumm!!). Butterscotch budino with marscapone and chocolate crispy cookie. It's a little noisy with the trains going by, but worth this small annoyance for the delicious flavors. We'll be back!

Just went here for lunch. The chicken cacciatore was the best I have ever had! I would highly recommend it. It would have been nicer if it came with a side or a salad. It came with a couple of pieces of bread. The bread was good but seemed to be missing something without the side. The menu seemed a little small but everyone in our party was very pleased with their meals. The rockfish was also very tasty. Give this place a try.

The restaurant is in a former warehouse setting that requires climbing a few stairs to reach the dining area. The background music is 1940’s Jazz with lots of trumpets, clarinet, and vocal all of which competes with table conversation. The turkey dinner was served with cold potatoes and cold green beans. The turkey and gravy was hot. The server cheerfully offered to replace our meals with hot ones. The servers worked in teams and service was excellent.

Clarklewis has to be our family's favorite restaurant above all others. Whenever we happen to be in Portland this has to be the place to dine. The food is exceptional because it uses local produce, meats and fish. It is always fresh and in the best of flavor. The staff is exceptionally welcoming and very customer oriented. For a great dining experience you must visit clarklewis. The last time we visited, there was a mix-up in two of our drink orders, but they were replaced immediately with no charge and one lucky family member got to have 2 extra drinks! Not too shabby!

We love eating out here and have always had the best service as well. The food is amazing, the drinks are good and the atmosphere is romantic too. One of our favorite places to go in Portland!

Restaurant is informal, service was super friendly and food very good bistro style, large portions so don't order too much. Also some good wines avaialble.

Very nice restaurant with great staff. I arrived early for our reservation, the bartender was friendly and suggested a very nice wine. Food was very good. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Dining here was a pleasant "open air" experience. The local microbrew was delightful and my fresh grilled salmon melted in my mouth! The wait staff was pleasant, and the overall experience was enjoyable. Although I would eat here again, I would have a salad in advance of my dinner, as the portion was exceedingly small (4 ounces).

Let me start with saying that the food my wife and I had was very good melon, tomato soup, Tuna, Salomon all very good. We came with my son and the waiter did not gave him any attention was not even ask him if he wanted to drink something. We ordered a spaghetti for him which they have in 2 sizes and maybe a mistake from us by we assumed he was automatically ordering the small portion however when the bill came we had to pay 20 dollar for my sons spaghetti which I tasted and it was not even good. Again our food was good but the waiter ruined our evening and we left without even giving any tip which is very unusual for us.

Always pleased by the level of service at clarklewis. Went for Portland Dining Month - not particularly impressed by the size of the portions. Would say that we had a fraction of the cost in food. Food was all delicious - imagine that the prix fixe menu was short on quantity intentionally. Would go back for a larger meal.

So Dad had a friend recommend this place and I was just thinking it would be OK, but it turned out really really good. Yes previous post there is a train, get over it. Food was tasty and again bright and colorful, made it fun to eat. Flavor was on point and sizes were good. The mixed drinks need more attention, although good the balance of flavors can change from drink to drink even though you ordered the same thing (still good) Great night out with the family!

We went to the restaurant for dinner and loved it. The service was great and they do not rush you - if you want a fast meal go get fast food... It's very nice to have time to chat between your courses. The food was very good and the drinks better. They have a great wine list and the staff was very helpful in our wine selection as well as our meal. The ambience is very nice, the kitchen is opened and in the evening the restraint has a yellow glow. Definitely worth a try.

Went here for a business dinner with four people total. Initially the service was outstanding. We were slow to order as our guests were a little late, but after saying we needed a few more minutes it was 25 minutes before our server returned, so we were off to a slow start. However, once things got going they moved along quicker. We had the duck sausage and cheese plate for appetizers. There was plenty to share for the entire group. The food was very well presented. The cheese plate in particular was a beautiful presentation. The selections were good also. It wasn't long before the plate was empty. We experienced three different entrees at our table including the salmon - which was prepared very well. It included a small side of potatoes perfectly prepared and a morel sauce, which was a bit salty. Other entrees included pasta and the beef. Both were generous servings and prepared very well. They had opened the walls of the restaurant and it was a gorgeous evening so it was wonderful having the outside brought in. The environment was lively, but not uncomfortably loud. They change the menu daily so no specials outside of what was on the menu. The menu was diverse and unique.

We had a delicious meal on June 22nd. The wide doors were open allowing the evening air to give our meal an alfresco feeling. The waiter was professional, warm and non-invasive; everyone seemed pleased to see us, personally. The charcuterie plate was varied and delicious, the pasta in the ragu had an especially nice fluffy, chewy texture I'm still thinking about. The steak was flavorful, thou the special spicy sauce was a little spicier than we'd have chosen - still delicious. The desert was hand made, beautiful and tasty. Appeared to be very easy parking, and it was a pleasant walk over the bridge from our downtown location. A wonderful local experience.

To be fair, everyone should know we all had an excellent meal at clarklewis. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday with my family, which included two teenagers. The adults in our party (3 of us) were excited to try the chef's tasting menu, as friends of ours and reviewers all told us it was something special. However, when we tried to order it, we were told that because our whole table wasn't involved, meaning the teens, they wouldn't serve it to us. Anyway, that irked us, because we were excited to try a sampling from the menu for my husband's birthday. It smacked of chef snobbery to us, whether or not that was the intent. That said, we all ended up enjoying our meals and having a fine evening, but we were disappointed by that initial exchange.

Tried this place for the 1st time since they participated in the Portland Dining Month offering ... wow, exquisite food profile, incredible marriage of flavors and OUTSTANDING service. Everything we tried was unbelievably delicious ..

Nice menu built on fresh ingredients very simply prepared. The pasta sauces will be the most complex component of any meal. Friendly and helpful service. Easy walk from most downtown hotel locations.

Beef tartare appetizer was phenomenal. Beautiful meat, perfectly seasoned, spinach leaves with lemon oil on top, creative side elements. Ribeye was disappointing. For a $45 dish, I'd expect a Wagyu experience, or highly creative sides. The meat was fine, evenly cooked, but with less marbling than I'd expect for this cut; sides were mixed: wonderful hedgehog mushrooms, but boring potatoes. Of two wines by the glass one was faintly corked but got worse (my mistake for not sending it back right away). All in all, not bad, but that's not good enough given the highly confident prices they charge.

Plus 36%. That's what you may pay above the posted menu prices. When you receive the bill, there is a 16% "service fee." On the check, it states that the service fee is NOT a gratuity so...if you're like me, you add another 20%. It would be better, Clarklewis, to just embed the service fee in the menu price. Then I'd know up front that the $19.00 frittata is actually $22.00 btw- The food is very good. The service was excellent.

Oh my, what a feast we had at this restaurant last night. Our group ordered the tasting menu and fortified it with the wine tasting option. At $100 each it’s definitely not cheap, but it made for a long and fun evening of good food, wine, and conversation. With the tasting menu, you surrender yourself to whatever the chef decides to send out, and he did well for us. I don’t remember them all, but we must have had at least a dozen different dishes including leek soup, three or four different and very delicious salads, a pasta interlude with three different handmade and very tasty noodle dishes, and then on to the meats, wherein platters of grilled lamb, pork, and beef were laid before us. Dessert featured a flourless chocolate cake alongside homemade chocolate mint ice cream. Everything we had was imaginatively prepared with surprise ingredient combinations. Along the way we sampled four different wines — one Spanish white, two PNW reds, and a fizzy white dessert wine. Each was delicious. All in all, it was a memorable experience and we are glad we did it, despite the high price. Given its location down in the industrial district, the restaurant sits near the railroad tracks and so loud trains occasionally rumble by and blast their air horns. It kind of adds to the experience. Kind of.

Great industrial ambiance. Wonderful wine list, good liquor, appears to have great beer choices, but I'm no beer person, so can't comment. Limited, but current entree choices. Great appetizers. Service knowledgeable and there when appropriate. On street and some parking beside restaurant. Definitely will go back.

Stopped for some quick nosh with an excellent welcome-to-Portland vibe. Set the stage for an awesome weekend experience. Beet martini. Yes, please.

Low value for money despite a lovely settings in a warehouse . But charging 55 usd for two thin slices of tasteless beef on a super small portion of puree, is not fair. There is a limit and this is definitively not good value for money . I don’t Ming paying for quality and original cooking but this was not the case here .The pasta are on the contrary very good

Delicious, ordered everything on the March dining menu and shared it. Came away satisfied, happy and not stuffed.

If you dine here, be ready to pay 30-40% more than menu prices between their surcharge and separate gratuity. Here’s the deal: CL now charges a 16% surcharge that they specifically say in the menu is _not the gratuity_… so when the bill comes it reminds you of this and has the suggested 15%, 20%, and 25% tip amounts _on top of_ the surcharge. So a 31-41% total service charge / gratuity for your meal?! Many Portland restaurants add 20% to a bill and indicate this is to provide healthcare etc to employees, but then specifically say no tipping needed. CL’s level of extra charge leaves a bad taste in the mouth after dining. Base menu prices are not cheap (eg $15 for a cocktail and main dishes at $25-60), so your meal quickly becomes very expensive with the surcharge plus gratuity. It doesn’t make sense. I’ve always loved ClarkLewis in the past but don’t know if I’ll be back. Please CL - remove your surcharge, or increase it slightly and remove tipping.

We held our rehearsal dinner at Clarklewis. It was a party of 17 people, including 1 child and one elderly handicapped grandmother. Overall, food, service, and atmosphere were all good, though some parts were better than others. The breakdown is below if you want details. Location: The restaurant is easy to find via Google Maps, and parking is quite easy in this area. The restaurant itself has a pretty good amount of onsite parking. The restaurant is very pretty inside--dark enough to set a nice tone, but not so dark that you can't see each other. I love the open kitchen. They have a private event space that was perfect for our party. We all fit comfortably around some large tables that they put together. Service: Overall, I'd give service a B+. Not bad at all, especially since we were a large party with a couple high maintenance individuals. The server was nice enough, but not quite as friendly and inviting as I like servers to be. That said, he definitely was not rude or anything, just didn't seem too psyched to be there. My 97-year-old grandma was a bit needy with asking things to be reheated, and he dealt with that well, which I really appreciated. Some people also switched spots throughout the meal, and having worked in restaurants I know how annoying that is. He seemed a bit annoyed, but he dealt with it. For what it's worth, all the other wait staff we worked with--hostess, other servers--were super nice and helpful, our guy in particular was just a little salty. Food: Entrees, salads, and desserts were fantastic--fresh, thoughtful, flavorful. Just about everyone was happy with their meal. The appetizers were the only course that fell short. Some of them were great, but some of them were a bit sloppy in terms of presentation and temperature. Overall, a good experience. Everyone thought it was great, and most of my critiques are mostly because I'm a pretty detail-oriented person and I can usually find something to improve on. In planning the event they were particularly helpful and nice, so I definitely think they're worth at least looking into if you're planning an event.

We sat by the open windows and enjoyed being in the city with all of its sights and sounds. We went with the chefs tasting menu- so much food, incredibly delicious and creatively chosen. We were shocked that we received so many different selections of each course. Cocktails were perfect and our waiter was really attentive, but not smothering. I can't complain about anything except for the fact that my stomach couldn't fit all of the great offerings. We were there in the winter and had a great meal as well, I'll be back in the fall to experience it once again!

Really a five for food and a three or less for ambience. Had a terrific meal with good wine, excellent service. But on this July night, the restaurant was open to the street to catch whatever air might be available. What was caught, however, was the roar of low riding motorcycles, which seem to be the vehicle of choice in this reclaimed industrial neighborhood, interspersed with whistles from passing Amtrak trains. Air conditioning and closed walls would have made this a perfect place.

I took my husband to Clarklewis last night for a Father's Day/birthday dinner. I was pretty excited about my restaurant pick and fully appreciated the decor and vibe upon arrival, but sadly we were both very disappointed with the food. We requested a charcuterie board that also featured a couple of cheese options (which they don't offer - you can have charcuterie OR cheese, but not both). When we asked our server for a combo board, she went to the kitchen to ask the chef ("they don't normally do that") and returned to say that they would, in fact, accommodate our request for $35. And it was a darn good thing because the cheeses and the 5 slices of capicolla were the only edible items on the board. The 'Nduja was overly flavored with what appeared to be chili powder. The Calabrian spreadable salami is and should be flavored with spicy chilis, but this just wasn't at all a pleasant version. The pickled green strawberries just shouldn't be a thing in my opinion. And the lamb "prosciutto" was not prosciutto at all, but instead a 1"-thick spiral of roasted lamb fat. I don't know exactly what cut they used, but it was pure fat - impossible to cut, impossible to chew, impossible to swallow, and not even tasty. I literally choked trying to get it down. Thank goodness for water! After the charcuterie, things looked up a bit. My husband and I split the frisee salad which had a nice, light parmesan dressing and was plenty for two people to share. Following, we split the tagliatelle with lamb ragu which again was plentiful. The tagliatelle was cooked perfectly al dente and the ragu was a flavorful braised lamb version which was quite nice. We were happy that the meal went on an upward trajectory but were overall disappointed with the meal as a whole, especially spending $35 for two slices of cheese and some capicolla (note: they did take $12 off our bill after we pointed out the situation with the lamb "prosciutto"). Unfortunately, we will not be returning to Clarklewis, nor could we recommend it to others in good faith.

Have wanted to eat here for quite a long time, and what would be a better time than Portland dining month. We started the evening off with the beet salad and the cod fritters. Both very good, cod fritters had a little odd texture but otherwise good. We both had the steelhead which was cooked very well. Small portions but nicely done. For dessert we had the espresso cake and the panna cotta. Espresso cake was more like a brownie you seen any hint of Coffee whatsoever. The panna cotta on the other hand was awesome, definitely the best I've ever had. The menu had quite a few options and a lot would appeal to most people although for vegetarian it's lacking a bit. Parking a little bit of a problem for a Friday night but a lot nicer than trying to find a spot in the Pearl.

Went with a friend who works at OMSI for lunch. Interesting menu with unique selections. I had the green tomato salad. Server was very good and ambience excellent. It’s out of the way but worth the effort.

We watched our meal be prepared in the open kitchen and then enjoyed the meal in the refurbished open-air warehouse! The service was wonderful and food was delectable! Was a bit loud when the trains went by but added to the fun! Would highly recommend this experience!

A really fine local produce restaurant in the old industrial district. The space is well designed so that the main seating area is above and open to the street in the summer which makes it feel airy and fresh. The food was very well prepared and presented. Oysters, some market brushetta, a really wonderful piece of salmon and a very nice Pinot Noir to wash it all down. Well worth a visit.

Fab cocktails, delicious beet salad, delightful salmon and decadent chocolate cake an panna cotta dessert options! All for $29 pp! Great 'Restaurant Month' choice!!

A very stylish restaurant in the eastside warehouse area. Went with my uncle and mother on saturday night, was very busy and it took a while for the food to come out, but was worth the wait. We ordered * cheese plate (cheese of course, but the nuts were soooo crispy and good !! ) * Roasted beets (I'm not a huge fan of beets, but this tasted so fresh, so good) * Duck Confit Garganelli nice, but I prefer crispy confit, this was too soft and watery) * Salmon Tagliarini * Black cod * Cannoli for desert (loved it ! just loved it !) Ambiance ... was too dark and the music (low bass sound) was too much for my mother and uncle , I think it's great for younger people. Will definitely come back again when in Portland !

We enjoyed everything about our dining experience @ clarklewis, except the noise level. Since it is set in an industrial warehouse and tends to attract quite a crowd, the noise level is very high. Fortunately, we had been forewarned and were able to secure a table near the entrance and across from the kitchen, so we were apart from the bulk of the patrons. Our server was fantastic. He offered advice on our suggestions and provided us with great input. Despite the fact that he was also waiting on a very large party, he was able to provide us with great service. We split the brushetta as an appetizer. It was fresh and delicious. We both had the Tagliatelli with lamb ragu, since our server said it was so good he would even eat it for breakfast. He was right. For dessert we had the artisanal cheese plate that we enjoyed greatly. All in all a fine and fun dining experience.

We really liked our meal here. There were 10 of us who had a variety of starters to share, followed by individual dishes for mains. There were many pasta dishes on offer which were tasty. Our server was very good and provided some helpful recommendations. We liked the fact that the tables are spread out and the atmosphere had a fun vibe.

We've been to Clarklewis many times but not for a while. We were pleased to find out their food was just as delicious as years past and their wait staff was still friendly and attentive. They've change the bar area, adding many more tables. We met for happy hour which doesn't start until 4:30. A little later then most Portland restaurants, and it's a bit out of the main downtown area on the east side of the river. On the plus side you don't have to pay for parking. They have everything from burgers to bread from Grand Central. We'll be back and it wont be so long next time, and judging from the line outside when we got there we'll come early.

TL;DR: If you’re looking for a good dining experience, go elsewhere. If you’re a Clarklewis rep, you have work to do. Details: we got a table for a birthday dinner for 2 on a Sunday night at the last seating, 8:15pm. It wasn’t too busy, and service was a bit slow but ok. We got our drinks after a while, and ordered a shared appetizer — an ok avocado/pea gazpacho — a halibut entrée, and a beef tenderloin entrée ordered medium rare. The appetizer came a bit late for cold soup, but the entrées took a great deal longer than expected, perhaps 40 minutes later. The $39 halibut was meh, a bit pedestrian. The $55 tenderloin was two approximately 2 oz. slim slices of beef, reasonably seared on the outside but otherwise raw. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he said “yeah, that’s not medium rare,” and took the plate. 25 minutes go by without a word, with my wife’s entrée gone quickly cold. A new plate was deposited in front of me without a word, and the waiter left. My wife had to get up to request her food be reheated, and her plate was yanked without a word. It was returned in 10 minutes in a salad bowl, apparently microwaved. No apology from the waiter. The tenderloin was pretty good, though not $55 good. The maitre’d came over to say he perhaps had overworked the waiter. He comped us a small slice of Safeway-quality cheesecake and two small glasses of what tasted like Prosecco but he claimed were $20 glasses of champagne. When we got the bill, he said he’d only charge me for one of the two $55 entrees — including the one that was sent back uneaten because it was raw. (Gosh, thanks.) I have a lot of sympathy for restaurants when things go wrong. I don’t have much sympathy when there is opportunity to make things better, and the restaurant/staff makes a weak attempt to do so. A premium restaurant would have at least comped one of the entrees, if not both. Clarklewis charges a premium price, and at best it’s not worth it. Customers can do much better elsewhere; Clarklewis should do much better, period.
Restaurant with vibe
Walking into the restaurant you see wood stacked up and up the stair landing you are in full view of the kitchen with a wood burning oven/stove. It's amazing that such a small kitchen can put out wonderfully orchestrated dishes! Our nights going out are never really planned. So we are happy they gave us a table without reservations. But, you kinda feel like aliens if you don't. We were seated at a great location by the garage type windows. Cassie was our sever and she was a delight. She recommended several dishes on the menu. Her attitude was so refreshing. What an asset to this restaurant! The restaurant was filled the whole time we were there. We started with a bottle of wine then were given bread with butter which they sprinkle d salt on top. Personally, I could have just ate that bread all night! It was so good! They told us it was made at a local bakery but I forgot to ask which one. (Guess I have to go back!) Appetizer was steamed clams which was a good call because we used the bread to sop up the broth! So delicious with the chunks of bacon. After we shared the market salad. If you order this you better have it for you meal or share it. It had ground cherries in the salad. Had to look them up because I never had them before. They were tasty. Cassi said to order the Tagliatelle, homemade pasta with lamb ragu. It does not disappoint! For two people we share the three above dishes. We were so glad, because if you ordered them just for yourself you would be talking a lot of food home. Desert was passed because if I ate another bite I would have exploded. Definitely would go back and hope we get Cassi again!
