The place is nice, but worth the cover?

By Kent H |

I thought the place was very cool looking on the inside. I do not think it is worth the $20 cover, $10 at most. It took a very long time to get a beer at the upstairs bar. I sat down for food, and the menu was only several appetizers. The chicken wings were good, and the waitress was nice and did a good job. My biggest problem is the music in a lot of clubs is poor. This club was better than others, but not that good. Their are many dance songs that are so good, everyone gets up to dance. Most modern day DJ's do not get it, in my opinion. The dance floor only had a few people on it. It should be packed if you know what you are doing. I would likely not go back, and that would be because of the music.

Wonderful venue with great staff, unacceptably unprofessional DJ

By viprincess2014 |

I will start by saying Clifton's venue is absolutely wonderful and the staff were extremely courteous and helpful-we celebrated a good friend's birthday with bottle service on Saturday, February 9th. Unfortunately, I can only give Clifton's 2 Stars because the DJ hired for the evening, DJ James Anthony was egotistical, barbaric, and objectively unprofessional. While it was very clear from his seclusion from the crowd (behind two barriers on either side of the booth), he had no interest in entertaining special requests (many DJs do not, this is not shocking), I approached the DJ Booth with a friend to mention that it was our friend's birthday and that the birthday boy had just returned to CA after living in Puerto Rico for 5 years and that any latin inspired music he could play that evening would be very well supported by the 30+ attendees of the birthday party (again, not requesting any specific song/we approached right after he had played "Suavemente," getting people very excited about the potential he might play more latin). Unfortunately, when we got to the booth, there was a woman who I can only assume was attempting to request a song...DJ James Anthony not only didn't give this woman the time of day but he took his open faced palm and placed it on this poor woman's forehead, pushing her away from him physically. As we saw this happening, it was very clear we did not want to experience that same treatment, so we made sure to keep our distance and wait patiently to the side until he perhaps had a break (thinking it was her physical encroachment on his space that had caused him to place his hand on the woman). Without so much as a glance, DJ James Anthony waived us off/not saying a thing (again, having no idea what it was we had approached him about). Because there was no messaging from him at all, it wasn't clear if it was just a bad time. An hour or so later, we decided to try again, and rather than say anything at all (basic human decency) DJ James Anthony picked up a speaker and held it directly in my face while laughing. I have traveled all over the world and have never been so disrespected by a DJ in my life. The treatment DJ James Anthony gave us was inhumane and malicious. I was so upset after the speaker incident, I sat down the rest of the evening and took the time to look up background on the DJ and what experience he might have had that made him feel entitled to mistreat patrons so boldly. I made up my mind I would review him in as many channels as possible today after I had time to think more critically about what had happened. At the end of the evening, as Clifton's was shutting down, when there was no music playing, I thought I should give him the opportunity to understand his behavior was inappropriate before taking to more public forums. I told the security guard that was attending to the booth that he was extremely rude and I would love an opportunity to speak with him before exposing him on social media the following day. He again ignored us entirely. When we mentioned to the staff how horrible DJ James Anthony treated us, not one of them expressed surprise and some even shared the behavior sounded pretty typical of him. Again, the staff at the venue (even the security monitoring the DJ booth), conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism. My only hope in writing this review is to let the Clifton's management know about his unprofessional conduct and warn others about DJ James Anthony. We were a group of elite educated doctors, lawyers, and dentists (all people of color), and he treated us like animals. I wanted to make a statement because I can and because I know people like him depend on most people not being willing to speak up or take the time to complain formally. I will not attend Clifton's (or any other venue, concert, or festival) where DJ James Anthony DJs in the future. I understand DJs aren't always able to interact with patrons (and obviously, it's not possible to please everyone), but customer service is inherent to the job. It is 100% possible to treat people with respect even if you decide you cannot accomodate them. To be clear, it is never acceptable to use physical force against a patron. I hope Clifton's Management is able to find more professional DJs in the future. DJ James Anthony is a liability.

Unusual and unique.

By Lisa F |

I looked for unusual places to visit and see in LA before I came to visit and all the sites suggested this place! It has a very interesting history to it and it is, indeed, unique. I loved the fact that it was cool and dark and that I was immediately greeted with a pumpkin patch situated right next to a medieval fire place! To the left was a waterfall and above me was a stuffed bear. There were lots of different food stations and the staff were happy for you to look around/take photographs. They were very helpful in suggesting vegetarian options. I choose a pasta dish, which was cooked fresh in front of me, and a Halloween cupcake. After I ate I looked around some more. The bar area on the first floor had an enormous tree in the centre and a stuffed bison in the corner. The upstairs bar was closed (in preparation for a function/party) but you could see that it was decorated in a dark, and gothic, style.

Interesting downtown cafeteria.

By Marge D |

Clifton's is a Los Angeles staple. The interior is worth a visit on it's own, the food is just okay, nothing special. Stop by for a drink at the bar on the second floor and take in the ambience.

No fuss, good food and drinks

By AnnieB2304 |

Plenty of standard American fare, well cooked, and very casual. The scene is whimsical, with three stories of tables in various settings. Redwood tree anchors the second floor with Bison and various other Americana. The cafeteria is on the main floor, with a roast section, a grill, a salad bar, a pizza station, and of course plenty of dessert. Easy to feed various tastes, staff is great, facility was darker at night, but everything looked clean. Although it was busy on a Friday night, there were still plenty of hidden tables around the second floor, near the bar. I also noticed plenty of families downstairs on the first floor.

Amazing History Remarkable Restaurant

By Wizard Toby |

Clifton’s is a Los Angeles landmark restaurant. It has been around for a tremendously long time and is steeped in history. The inside is heavily themed and on par with anything Disney’s Imagineering has ever come up with. Most of its history has been collected over the decades as opposed to being designed within the last 10 years to resemble history. The restaurant is cafeteria style and the options for dining are huge. The dining area is opulent. They even have the oldest continuously running Neon light in history down where the restrooms are. I highly recommend going and will be back again soon.

Best swing dancing and cocktails!

Interesting Decor; Historical Cafeteria; Food OK; Staff Friendly

By JerryH9905 |

January 3, 2017 - After walking on Broadway to look at the facades and architectural features of some of the old theaters; the Palace, the Roxi, etc., we stopped at Clifton's for dinner. We had listed Clifton's as one of the historical places we wanted to visit while in Los Angeles and this was a good time to visit. We arrived around 4:30pm just before dark. A sign on the sidewalk on the outside of Clifton's advertises an alcoholic drink at a dramatic reduced price but a closer look indicates that you have to pay regular price for the first drink, which can be as much as $15. Cocktails are served on the 2nd floor of the Cafeteria. For New Year's Eve, Clifton's was jumping on each floor with entertainment and special food, but we were not present. Upon entering Clifton's you notice that the lights are a little dim and there is a forest motif with an owl, a moon, a bear, etc. It is quite well done and, I believe is the result of recent remodeling. Clifton's dates back to the 1920's. As we walked through the Cafeteria we found the serving lines in the back on the first floor. There was a serving line for salads and fresh sandwiches. We stopped at the serving line that had choices of fresh carved pork, turkey breast and beef; accompanied by two side dishes. The portions are huge, so we split a meal at $14.95 plus tax. The two fellas behind the serving line were very courteous and had a great sense of humor. And, I believe they made our single serving a little larger than usual. The place was not very busy because it was still fairly early on a week night. Bottom line. You have to visit Clifton's Cafeteria at least once in your life. It has an integral part in the history of Los Angeles from the time when brightly lit theaters lined Broadway and other nearby streets downtown. And, the food is pretty good, fairly reasonably priced, and large portions.

Unique charm/great food

By kyleohlsson |

Not being from LA, and being new to the city, I'm was looking for something spectacular. I FOUND IT! This place is a must-see. If you have a soft spot for preserved historical charm, this is from you! There's nothing like it. PLUS the restaurant quality food in the cafeteria is wonderful.

Great food, and value for money

By PhillC |

Clifton's is an LA institution. It has undergone a substantial renovation, and some purists may be disappointed that it is no longer a "time capsule" that transports you back to the 1940s. I got to experience the old Clifton's, and there was indeed something magical about stepping through the looking glass into a place where it seemed as if 50 years of history had not taken place--where jello in parfait glasses topped with whipped cream was still a popular dessert. The new Clifton's is not the same place. And it is still a cafeteria, still offers great food, and still offers a unique, special and affordable place to enjoy delicious food in a fun atmosphere. The new offerings recognize the diversity of tastes and ways of eating. There any many very traditional foods. But also vegetarian and vegan options. We were there on a Sunday, and there was a live Jazz trio. The quirky California redwood forest decor is still intact. And the prices, though not as cheap as before, are still very affordable. I highly recommend making a stop at Clifton's if in DTLA.

Tiki!!

By Jet763868 |

This reciew is for the Tiki Bar, great experience overall!! But next time I will be stopping by the cafeteria, tiki bar only offers drinks.

Downtown dining institution

By Kaalo |

What can one say? This place is simply weird. Go for the food. Go for the drinks. But most of all, go for its quirkiness! Has to be seen to be believed and should on your list along with Disneyland.

Brunch!!

By Pauls |

Visiting LA (from Australia), and this place was on my wifes list to find. Glad we did. Did not expect what we found inside from the street. Great atmosphere and food. Make sure you have a good look around before getting your food. We had pizzas, and they were great. 2 x pizzas, 2 x cakes, 2 x coffee all for under $25 Make the trip.

Historic Jem in DTLA

By loldhams |

If you happen to be staying in downtown Los Angeles proper you have to visit Clifton's. Built in 1935 it's said to have been an inspiration to Walt Disney! I went there for a little Sunday lunch. As I live in DTLA it was just a short walk. Walking is advised since free parking in the area is non-existent. There are parking structures but they can run you some coin if it's during the week all day or on the weekend. The Pershing square subway is the closest one of coming via our Metro rail system - one way tickets from any destination is 1.75 - bargain! Since they are open until midnight most nights getting a Lyft or Uber back to your hotel is recommended. While walking is safe during the day it can be intimidating for guests visiting our lovely city at night. As I mentioned I was there for a little Sunday lunch from their cafeteria. Since the remodel the cafeteria is now super classy while holding on to the charm of the original design. I stayed on the first floor to eat. I had their amazing cracker crust veggie white pizza, a classic carrot, raisin, pineapple salad and a Stumptown coffee. When you first enter the caf you are almost thrown back in time with classic confections and sodas. I just can't emphasize the charm level here - so well done!! And the prices?? I paid less than 10 bucks for my meal!! They take cash and credit cards. There are other levels that I intend to discover - the weekends there is live burlesque with a live dj that looks good and their Sunday Magic Hour drinks in the tiki lounge. Yes, I said tiki lounge! And you can create your own mimosa for those Sunday brunches with your gal pals! No reservations taken, you just walk in! Enjoy!!

Must see

By tmboc |

This place is amazing! The architecture and style is something that must be seen especially if you are into Art Deco and antiques. When I made a reservation for the Pacific Seas are I thought that was one of the restaurants but no. Drinks only. That was a bummer so ask when booking a particular area if there's a food menu.

A fun stop for families

By cocobay |

We stopped by Clifton with 3 generations , and it was a fun evening . The food is plentiful and reasonable ( cheap even for what you get ) . BUT what makes this place unique is the decor , the old fashion atmosphere and all the stuffed animals stations . It's HUGE , 3 stories and everything place you look is a new experience ... The staff is friendly but could be more helpful..it's difficult to navigate all the food stations .we are happy we went but do not think that it needs to be a repeat visit . The neighborhood is not the best ,we parked across the street in a parking garage .

Oh so good!

By RPK89 |

I didn't know what to expect by the 'cabinet of curiosity', but I was pleasantly surprised and loved every minute. The music is great, the vibe amazing and the tiki mugs we bought totally awesome. The food was delicious and i love the simplicity of the whole set up. Well played Clifton's!

Fun!

By Madge W |

The food is delicious and so many choices. Went with 10 people and everyone had something different. The pot pies are wonderful. Those who had breakfast liked their choices. Meatloaf and spaghetti were well liked too. The little salads were liked too- the tuna and quinoa. The restaurant is pure kitsch with stuffed wild animals and lots of funk.

QuirkyDining

By John W |

This is really an odd eating place which, apparently, was closed for a long time but has been reopened with renovations continuing in the future. The "cafeteria" will eventually have 5 levels. Go for the food and especially for the design.

Good old fashion cafe

By mcorbin560 |

Clifton's has been around for many many years. They use to have many different locations in the old days (Century City, etc) and now only have the one location in downtown Los Angeles, They service excellent food and service is very good too. Plenty of freshly cooked food items and freshly carved turkey is a must. Definitely a good place to eat if you are in the downtown area of Los Angeles.

Wonderland! (And a cafeteria)

By Gabriella A |

Clifton's is a completely immersive cabinet of curiosities. Each floor is packed with strange and wonderful oddities to delight the eye and the mind including a taxidermy buffalo and a full sized redwood tree with a fireplace inside of it. The wood surfaces gleam and there is something surprising around every corner. Be sure to explore all of the levels before you eat! The cafeteria serves hearty meals at a very good price. The bars serve beer, wine and craft cocktails that are inventive and high quality. It is something that really must be experienced if you are in downtown Los Angeles. Its not "for kids" but your kids will love it.

A Trip Back in Time and Great Food Too!

By LucianoLeon |

A friend and I were in the area to visit the Last Bookstore, and we decided to stop at Clifton's to eat as it was in walking distance to the bookstore. Cliftons is an oasis of eclectic culture and memories. There are three stories to the restaurant, where the emphasis isn't only on the food, which is delicious, but its history as well. In many ways Clifton's reflects a by-gone era of speak easys and smooth jazz, yet the overall motif and ambiance speaks of owner's with a broad taste in both art and decoration. Among other things, the restaurant has a menagerie of stuffed animals, (Real ones I may add, not stuffed animals from Toys R Us) including an amazingly realistic lion. There are also many references to rocks and semi-precious stones and the world's longest running neon light, which has been on for a reported eighty years in a row. Since Clifton's is both a museum and a restaurant, it's advised that visitors take the time to thoroughly browse all three stories, as there is a lot to see. A good walk will definitely get the appetite stimulated. Once everything has been explored satisfactory, it's off to the restaurant. Clifton's has an interesting set-up and it can nearly be classified as a maze. My friend and I both had to ask where we started and how to proceed. From a cursory examination, the restaurant's layout almost seemed like a gauntlet. With assistance from the restaurant's staff, we found our way with little problem. The food at Clifton's could very well be described as good old fashioned comfort food. All American dishes that have been traditions in restaurants for decades. But because of the atmosphere, the food seemed to have more visual appeal and flavor than one would typically see at a restaurant serving up comida Americana. I went with a main entree of meatloaf with sides of mac n' cheese and mashed potatoes and washed it down with a non-traditional brand of diet coca-cola. The meatloaf was delicious. A large, thick slice with just the right amount of ketchup and moist throughout. the mac n' cheese, was light years apart from Kraft mac 'n cheese or similar products that we often base our comparisons to. The mac 'n cheese at Clifton's was about as perfect as mac n' cheese can be. A great balance of flavor, rather than distinct tastes of cheese with macaroni. I could have easily eaten a second helping. The mashed potatoes were equally as good. Light and fluffy. Not to hard and not too soft. Just a perfect blend of both. All in all it was a complete and satisfying meal. For those who enjoy a more comprehensive eating experience, Clifton's is definitely a place to check out. You won't be disappointed!

Not just a cafeteria

By bearetteCA |

This place is all about the atmosphere and for being right on Broadway in downtown the prices are reasonable. My husband and I stopped by before a Halloween experience nearby for dinner and drinks. Even on a Saturday they had happy hour from 5-7pm which included 35 cent (yes cents) sangria. Not a large pour but nice for the price. Blue plate special for 9.99 which was an excellent pesto pasta dish plus quaily food and desserts. This place is great for adults or families and whether you eat your meal in the dinning room or bar area you will find something interesting to see. I will be back next time we are in town.

Over priced cafeteria food

By Mariann s |

Unique place but I agree with another review; dark, musty, tacky and old feeling. There were several different lines or stations that made it difficult to stay with your group to check out together and still have hot food. I think it was overpriced for the turkey and Mac and cheese that I had. I would not return.

Multi-level bar with eclectic decor

By Shanelle |

Multi-level bar with eclectic decor (particularly of the taxidermy variety). Came here with some friends on a Friday evening at 9:30 and there was no cover. There’s a bar on each level and they serve different drinks at each one. The cinnamon drink made on the third level was the most fun to watch. Restrooms were available on the second level. There’s a fair amount of seating and you can reserve tables. The Tikki room that night was unfortunately closed. The music was bumping and we really liked the big tree in the middle, which held a fireplace at the base with a couple of chairs.

Oldie but goodie

By Passport247746 |

Went to the "new" Clifton's with nostalgic memories from my childhood. Love the new look but I was very disappointed in the quality of the food. All of my selections were mediocre at best. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes not very good. The steamed veggies were just okay. I understand they are going to open a steak house and I hope they up the quality here. The bar areas are fantastic and the nature theme of the restaurant is wonderful but the lost me with the food

Great decor, average food

By Octavio G |

This is place is really great to take pictures inside and maybe have a drink, not for a meal, it was pricey and average food, I had roast beef, mashed potatoes and mac n cheese, nothing outstanding, my wife had the turkey which was cooked to perfection but $52 for two people is a lot, you can eat for a lot less at Grand Central Market, anyway, as I said, great for a drink not for food.

Interesting place

By HotRodPinata |

I haven't been to this place since I was a kid. Being able to go again was a real treat. I went for the swing band, LA swing LA Swing Barons. The place was very interesting. A lot of old time Decor. Drinks were very expensive but good. No cover charge. When we go to see swing bands the crowd is usually dressed a little nicer. But this place apparently has no dress code. There were people there it in T-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes. In general a younger crowd. Some with no dance floor etiquette. An example would be someone sprinting across the dance floor between dancers to say hello to a friend. Other than that it was a great experience. If only to see it and have a drink.

We heard about Cliftons and wanted to see it. Very interesting setting.

By Mazuza2 |

We were visiting downtown at the Broad art museum and walked over to Clifton's to see what it was all about. When you ask someone "What's Clifton's like?, no one can give an answer. Its a cafeteria and bar, and so many other curiosities that when you walk around something catches your eyes everywhere you look. Some of the items are a giant tree, stuffed buffalo and lion, a waterfalls, and a band playing Dixieland. We didn't eat as we had just gone to lunch, but I had to see it. There was no line and it wasn't all that crowded. The first floor that has the cafeteria section, everything looked really good, spotlessly clean with a good variety of American style cafeteria food. The second floor has a bar and many other kitschy displays. Supposedly their drinks at the bar are first class. There is a third floor, but that was closed when we were there. Its definitely a unique place to visit. If you are in downtown Los Angeles, pop in and walk around. you will be either impressed or horrified.

It should be dated but with the remodel it's dated and loud

By Lslondre |

Way too loud. And now darker. They have the very dark tiki room which seems dangerous coming down the stairs and the music is cranked up for miilennials. Food is pricey.

Average

By katNashville_Tn |

We had enough about this place to want to visit. It was okay but not worth the drive downtown. The decor is tacky...I know...that's part of the appeal. However, it seemed dark, musty and grungy. I'm not saying it was, it just felt that way. My husband meatloaf, mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. He said they were good. I tried of the mac and it was definitely good. I just had a salad, and it was everything a salad should be...minus the fact that they don't have bacon. I had a cupcake for dessert and I didn't finish it...and dessert is my favorite part of the meal. It tasted like a cake mix, and the icing was no better. It was topped with a little cookie ring and glaze. It was a disappointment. Kids might enjoy this place but this adult was not impressed.

Overwhelming place, but good food

By jameskul |

I visited Clifton's for lunch with a group. I had no idea what to expect, and I found it overwhelming. Cafeteria is such a simple concept, but it took me several minutes to figure out how it works. There are quite a few varied food options - all of it appears freshly made and indeed everything I ate was very tasty. As a vegetarian, I had no shortage of choices. I found it hard to figure out the prices. It was quite busy at lunch but the cafeteria line moved fairly quickly. The staff were all very friendly at the made-to-order stations. There is lots of reasonably comfortable seating and many unusual things to see around this large restaurant - such as stuffed exotic animals and a cabinet of curiosities. The music was a bit too loud and I found it hard to have a conversation with my table-mates. Overall, I'm glad I went because the food was very good, but doubt I would return.

A Blast from the Past

By John C |

As a native to the greater Los Angeles area, Clifton's was an occasional option for my mom when she would take us shopping in downtown LA, particularly in mid December. My wife and I have memories of this restaurant, and perhaps had a better time enjoying the restored interior etc., than first-time guests; but there is still a lot here to have fun with. The theater district along Broadway slips into the jewelry district at about where you find Clifton's Cafeteria. Like an oasis in the desert, small tables spill out onto the sidewalk boarded by greenery in contrast to the acres of concrete. Once inside, you pass several glass cases offering a look back at the original toy and souvenir items that kids (like myself) begged for. The serving area is separated into sections where you can find hot meals, sandwiches and deserts respectively. A great place to visit if you are unsure what kind of cuisine you may be interested in since there are lots of choices. Having no one waiting behind me at the sandwich station, I struck up a conversation with the fellow working there who was eager to tell me about the memorabilia dotted around the restaurant, both upstairs and downstairs. Seating is at heavy picnic style tables with chairs making it easy to find a comfortable spot for large groups. The food is good, servings are generous and the price is reasonable. The interior of the building is lined with faux stone outcroppings and redwood tree trunks support the two story ceilings. There is even a water feature that divides the seating area from guests waiting to be served. We visited just before one in the afternoon on a Wednesday and did not wait for anything other than the actual serving of our choices. The Los Angeles Grand Central Market is a couple of blocks down the street and is mainly small walk-up food vendors amid a few produce vendors, which may account for the missing crowd at Clifton's - hard to know. It should be noted that this restaurant is a restoration of the original Clifton's that had closed (part of me died when it did). The new owner took the time to capture the original appearance of the restaurant while upgrading the kitchen and serving area. As a kid, the treasure chest that is now located by the cash register used to be located at the back of the restaurant where the serving area is today. Kids could select a toy from the treasure chest as part of the experience. I actually remember that more than the food. The current owner also reached out to the Los Angels Mission to offer employment to members of the community that could use some support getting back on track, which to my mind, is worth supporting this business, in and of itself. Parking along Broadway is very competitive, but Clifton's is an easy walk from the parking over by Pershing Square. Defiantly bring your kids, and build some memories!

Cliftons in West Covina California

By RAZMTAZ2002@YAHOO.CO |

I am not sure this is the same company as the cliftons cafeteria I ate at as a kid in the early 1960's. I loved the place. For a kid getting a free toy out of the treasure chest at the end of the meal as you exited, was a thrill. I remember the food being very good as well.

Not your momma chicken potpie

This is very popular and it get sold out easily. The crust is perfectly flaky and white meat and veggies is so delicious and filling. I love the mason jar, so cute and the whole interior is warm and cozy. This is a real local gem.

So much fun and so LA

By DebsDoodle |

Went there for drinks and to have a good time and was not disappointed by either. Lot's of fun different rooms to hang out in. Different themes on the different floors and lots of music and lots of people. Hard to find a seat sometimes but worth standing around and people watching.

Very cool place!

By hooamihere |

We arrived here late, after 10pm. The downstairs was empty, we thought it was closed as we passed the live performers leaving. To our surprise, the party was still raging. Not downstairs, or even in one of the main rooms on the second floor. We found the "secret" door to the Pacific Seas barupstairs. it's a throwback bar circa 1945. It was amazing. You have to see it, experience it, for yourself. Sidenote: I had no idea this place was a restaurant. LOL

A must go in Downtown Los Angeles!

By BackRoadsUSA |

Historic gem that thankfully was saved and reopened! Multi levels- cafeteria style as it was originally, won't even tell you about the interior just go! Make sure to walk around- go up and poke around as much as you can. Special events at night, christmas time there are carolers, Santa Claus and Sunday Bloody Mary bars all day! Parking downtown look for parking structures- or if visiting and you can walk or take public transport do it! Food is ok- and all individually priced so be aware of that but the experience is so worth it! Classic American fare- eggs/bacon for breakfast - I am sure similar choices for lunch etc

Decor alone worth the visit

By BobPhibbs |

Excellent staff and good food - the Turkey pot pie is filled with Turkey and not fillers but the decor on 3 levels adds fun to explore. Go to the 3rd floor to spot the lion.

Go to Clifton's at least once.

By EdyRittenhouse |

We stopped in on a nice quiet Tuesday around 6pm a few people at the bar. It was raining so maybe that helped the lack of crowds because we have seen lines out around the corner. Some day this place will be safer and less irritating to walk around. There is history up and down the street, theaters all over. We went to a concert at the (wish I could afford to stay there) ACE Hotel . . . anyway the food we love comfort food I had the chicken pot pie although it's in a jar. The croissant top was cute and buttery yum the soup inside was thin which I prefer to thick and starchy like most, I will have it again! My husband always tries the meatloaf and potatoes, I had two bites of his not bad . . . but I'll stick to pot pie. He had the chili before when we did a drive by he liked it. The desert was well, nothing caught my eye and I'm on a weak diet. You must try Clifton's at least once! the food was good enough but be careful this place is an Icon of LA it's walking distance to a lot of historic theaters. PS. if you don't like the prices just get desert!

Lots of choices; fun atmosphere!

By fairgirl59 |

Fun place to eat with a group or on your own. Everything is buffet, with different areas: entrees, pasta bar, pizza bar, thanksgiving type meal buffet, dessert buffet, salad and soups, lots of different kinds of drinks. Walking into the food area there are all kinds of fun and unique souvenirs to purchase. The actual restaurant has a bar/lounge on the second floor. There are three floors with all kinds of stuffed animals (lion, bison, bear).

Eclectic Lunch

By NotALostWanderer |

Clifton's is very unique, with décor that will thrill the kids. We went for lunch and I really enjoyed the small salads: tuna, quinoa and pasta. Kiddo had chicken strips and the cornbread dressing. The s'mores tart dessert was delicious. All in all - pretty tasty! Very interesting décor which kept our eyes entertained. Worth a visit if you're downtown.

A beautifully restored piece of history

By Marianne M |

I was so excited to come back to visit a childhood tradtion with my family. Just as I remembered, but now restored and looking better. Multi levels with themes. I like to sit next to the waterfalls amidst the trees and stuffed animals, as if to dine in a forest. The food is not the old cafeteria food I remember! A compliment! This food is far better! The cafeteria area is wonderfully arranged with stations and options for everyone in your party. The food is very good, fresh, and tasty. Reasonable prices too! You must experience this place.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

By Michael T |

So there is a time machine after all. Clifton's takes you back to the 30's and 40's like no place can. The place is amazing!!! From the huge redwood tree you can eat inside, to the waterfalls, art deco, original floors and walls, murals, etc. this place hasn't changed. You can live American history as it was through the 30's and 40's!!! It is a cafeteria but for a cafeteria, the food was pretty great!!! This place needs to be preserved and everyone should go at least once in your life. You won't regret it.

Blast from the Past

By trvlnutAppleton_WI |

You feel like you are stepping back into time with the edgy, eclectic decor. Where else can you find a stuffed bear and a concrete tree growing in the middle of the restaurant? The food is super too with various stations in the buffet line. They have carved meat, meatloaf, huge pot pies, various sides selection, desserts, and many other food items that you can choose.

An L.A Classic

By beetrvln |

Clifton's has been on my "to do" list for a long time and we finally found time to head into L.A to have lunch. The restaurant is an L.A tradition, and has been around for a very long time. The restaurant has been remodeled but has kept it's cool, iconic vibe. As you enter the hostesses will help guide you. The cafeteria portion of the restaurant is located on the first floor. The cafeteria is set up as stations, so you can find which station you want to pick from without having to wait in one continuous cafeteria line. As you enter, you will find the soup and salad station, towards the back you will find Kids choices, pasta's, pot pie and misc. items, heading on around to the next station, you will find 3 or 4 pizza choices. On around, they have a large dessert station. In the middle, you will find meats and sides. You can have Thanksgiving dinner any day. You will find carved meats and meatloaf. The sides include mac and cheese, stuffing, steamed veggies, potatoes and other vegetable dishes. Seating for the cafeteria is on the first floor or second floor. On the second floor you will find a bar for beers, wine and mixed cocktails. The large tree in the middle of the room houses a cozy fireplace. The woods and ambiance is cozy. The rooms are filled with wood, in the panelings, tables, stair railings, and bar. On the 3rd floor is a restaurant dining room and bar. On the 4th floor are two bars including a tiki bar. The food quality was great. We split a huge piece of pizza and I had to have a side of Mac and Cheese, just because it is pure comfort food. The pizza slice was huge and can be shared. The slice was on thin crust and topped with fresh ingredients and was very good. The Mac and Cheese was full of ooey goodness, full of cheesy flavor and the chef offered to sprinkle paprika and crunchy bread crumbs, do it, it adds a nice crunch to the dish and the smoky paprika added a nice smoky flavor. Before you head out, make a stop in the bathroom, not for the decor, but on the wall in the bathroom area you will find an 80 year old piece of neon, that is still burning and has been burning continuously for 80 years. When they remodeled the restaurant they find the section of neon lighting hidden behind a wall and it had been lit all those years hidden in the wall, really very cool. Parking in downtown L.A can be a nightmare, but don't let this deter you from a visit. There is a parking garage directly across the street from the restaurant which makes it very easy. Parking can also be expensive, so just know ahead of time, you will pay $4.00 for every 15 minutes, with a maximum of $16. Parking to eat at the restaurant did cost us the full $16, but it was worth every penny for such a fun and nostalgic experience.

very fascinating place, lousy breakfast

By arizona-mark |

the visit to the place itself helps to make up for the lousy overpriced breakfast. the food reminds me of the circus-circus breakfast right as they close up. my bride ordered the egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad and fruit-bowl, and she enjoyed those at least. but that being said, the building itself is definitely worth seeing.

Making lunch memorable

By Denny G |

The food selection is huge and the quality above average in a setting that's a cross between a museum and a slightly bizarre mansion. The museum comment is extra fitting since this is a recently restored piece of LA history. Definitely recommended.

Fun, Trippy Restaurant

By Robonski |

I think that Clifton's is a fun restaurant. It was neat to be able to eat cafeteria style and to pick whatever it was that we wanted to eat. I got the prime rib + veggies (there seemed to be horseradish in them, so I didn't enjoy them as much as I would have liked) + corn pudding. I was sooooo full after dinner. It was really neat to be able to take our food and eat wherever we liked in the multi-story building. They have a fun thing going here. Would recommend if you're in the area for a show at one of the nearby theaters.

Finally ate here after all these decades.

By Ben B |

I remember seeing ads for Clifton's on TV when I was a kid. Decades later, my wife and I just visited the revamped version. It still has the eclectic woodsy decor and fun alcoves, the waterfall and huge trees. It's less cafeteria style and more food courtish. With the four floors of seating and what I hear is a burlesque basement on weekends, Clifton's is shaping up to be a hot spot in downtown LA.

Cool ambionce

By melissabK6059PQ |

Really enjoyed the live Sunday jazz band, cafeteria style eatery, and super cool 2nd story bar. Didn't like my Bloody Mary very much, but the presentation was impressive. Would definitely go back

If you are just there to eat, go elsewhere.

By elizabethlascheid |

Clifron's has been in Downtown LA forever it seems. It was never good, it was cheap. Now it still not good, but it is no longer cheap. Clifton's has a few floors and a cute little design, if you are into stuffed lions. I am not. They have a tree that goes up the center of the floors. I don't care. If you are there on a dance night, great have fun. Eat before you go. Clifton's is a cafeteria. You grab a tray and pick out what you want. They have meat loaf, soups, tons of bland pastries and mashed potatoes that make you recall why you pay more for them at a decent restaurant. If you are visiting LA, I can tell you 50 better places to go. Clifton's goes from being a dump to being trendy. I have lived here forever and I know hospital cafeteria food when I have it.

Bizarrely amazing

By Andrea M |

I've walked by this place a million times and finally went this past Saturday night. I was on sensory overload with all of the nooks and crannys and unique decor. The food was surprisingly good given the fact that it is cafeteria style. Was annoying to get a cocktail though. I would highly recommend the meatloaf and the apple pie.

Perfection!

By Sasha M |

I was so excited when they started renovating Cliftons and I wasn't disappointed with the end result. The place is an experience, it's full of wonderful quirky things to explore, and it's a piece of history brought back to life. The decor is hands down the best bit. The Tiki bar on the top floor a close second. The food in the cafeteria varies, the salads are great, as are the meatloaf, the chilli and the pasta. The vegetarian options are quite limited and a tad bland. The dessert counter is perfection. So many cakes, so pretty, so much fun! This place is not where you come for fine dining, that's not its usp. It's where you come to have fun, be a kid again, or to bring your own kids, it's about a bygone era. It's completely lovely and I can't wait to go again.

Awesome Experience

By Susan D |

This was my second visit in 12 months with different people. Love the venue and of course the nostalgia. As you Angelenos know this is an old establishment with much history. Closed for awhile but now back going strong. The official name now is Clifton's Republic. They are trying to appear more modern for the younger set. Well let me say the venue itself should be able to accomplish that. The cafeteria is in the first floor with the same yummy homey dishes like meat loaf, carved turkey and ribs with all the fixings. Fabulous pot pies and salad and pizza. Second floor a casual bar and tables. Third floor a fabulously beautiful art-deco style bar, casual seating and another room that can host a private party and sometimes they have music. Now, the icing in the cake and just opened in November is the Tiki bar on the 4th floor. Oh, and it's so beautiful and chic. You enter via a mirrored door that seems rather secret. I can't even describe what a unique space awaits you. A must see. Stop by for dinner, explore and head up up. Now, our one negative. Since it is a cafeteria and no wait staff they are terrible about picking up trays. Many people were roaming around wanting a table and the open ones were piled with trays and dirty dishes. We saw employees walk right by them and do nothing.

Fantastic restaurant

By Lynne A |

What an amazing setting!!! It opened in 1931 and is the last of the chain of Cliftons Cafeteria. The interior is a wonder with vintage taxidermy and a three story tree. Beautiful murals and vintage and unique furniture. The tiki bar on the fourth floor is daring. The food is definately not cafeteria food with little gourmet salads and unique food stations.

Truly an eclectic house of curiosities

By PhxMom99 |

Right now, I’m enjoying a local craft brew with a grizzly bear while sitting on a chair fit for a king, in dim lighting that is certain to make me look even better than my usual sassy self. And this is just one of the fascinating floors in a building filled with mystery and sure to delight. Can’t find the fourth floor? Hint, look for the mysterious mirror. Is that a giant redwood I. The middle of the bar? It just might be. It just might be..... So travelers! Brave the intimidating Jewelry District in DTLA, and have a drink in the most fascinating of places!

What's Old Is New Again

By WoHop132 |

After going to Staples for an NBA afternoon game I decided to go to Clifton's. The key word is afternoon because I'm not going there after the sun goes down. Many years ago I walked into Clifton's to just take a look not knowing anything about this place. Did not eat there at the time. Well, now I can say I have eaten there & not going back a 2nd time. They did a fantastic job with the renovation. I had the roast beef with a double order of mac & cheese because they didn't have mashed potatoes or vegetables. Also ordered a turkey pot pie. There is a carving station where they serve you 3 slices then you walk to the other stations. The second floor has a bar & fireplace which is a nice touch. The remaining floors were not open while I was there. All in all glad to see they reopened.

What a cool, unique, fun place to go for old school Tiki experience and drinks!

By chad s |

My sister in law took us here for a night out on the LA town and it was an absolute blast! Here are my takeaways: 1) Definitely, reserve a table in the Pacific Seas ahead of time. We had to get some sort of special token at the door in order to enter the secret speakeasy-like door to get to the tiki bar. 2) Once we got the token we had to find the clue that would open the secret passageway. Which led up a set of stairs into the Tiki Haven. 3) The atmosphere was great, old island music playing, very cool tiki decorations with classic photos and lots of fun antiques hanging on the wall, loads of little tiki huts that you could have a private drink or be out in the open. They even had a huge Kon Tiki raft up in the ceiling and an antique wooden boat for part of the bar. 4) On the menu they have all kinds of Rum drinks to choose from which are a page out of the 1930s and 1940s. My sister in law and I opted to go with the big dragon bowl with loads of straws. It came out flaming! It was a trip drinking from this thing. 5) Overall, we had loads of laughs, it was a one-of-a-kind place that I won't forget with a touch of Nostalgia. I highly recommend this place for a night on the town. 6) Also, on the lower floor, there is a massive tree (redwood) in the middle of the restaurant that is quite impressive. Very interesting place. Check it out! you won't be disappointed.

Delicious turkey!

By 78fox |

I really enjoyed the nostalgia of Clifton's, the food too! I had the turkey with 2 sides. My turkey was delicious, moist and flavorful. The mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce were winners too. I'll skip the stuffing the next time. Everything I didn't have looked great - I can't wait to go back and try some off the other options.

Excellent food and ambiance. An L.A. Institution

By ClintWorldWide |

Clifton's is not to miss: A four story, multilevel wonderland with a forest/cabin feel (think polished logs and a giant tree with fireplace burning is the centerpiece). The cafeteria food is excellent.

Trip to LA LA Land through the Enchanted Forest

By ConcordBaddog |

The moment you enter the door, you feel you have stepped into LA in the 30's. This is a cafeteria, fer gawd sakes, but feels like a whole other world. The food is american and good, but save room for dessert, cause the pastries are amazing. The decor is kitschy, to say the least, with tree trunks and taxidermy throughout. It's not cheap, but worth the experience.

Edible food in insanely awesome place

By Mike S |

The cafeteria style food is edible/if it were in a normal setting I'd never think about going back. However, nothing about the setting is normal. There are floors and floors and floors of awesome kitsch. Highly recommend a visit!

How… unusual?

By Akamaikai |

Only in LA. Walking back to my hotel I caught said of this place and thought to myself, "What the heck is that?" Its a cafeteria like no others, done out in fully Hollywood set design to look like you are in a forest in Northern California. Taken in by the "$0.35" cocktail promotion (its real!) I came in and thought I'd get an appetizer (a purchase is required to cash in your wooden nickel) and was surprised by the quality of the food. Upstairs near the redwood tree there is a lively bar and there is much to see all around you. Quirky, fun, pricey, entertaining, and unusual, this is worth a stop to just say you've been there… $6 for a side salad is high, but the quality is good and its just so darn weird its worth the high price. I think it would be a great place to stop for a coffee and pastry if you are sightseeing downtown. Certainly more interesting than the crappy jewelry stores that are around that area!

eh

By Stacie D |

A bit disappointed in the restaurant. Food overpriced however, the chicken pot pie was tasty. I found the place was a bit too touristy and not as "old" charming as it was forty years ago.

Don't judge a book by its cover

By cro_sandy72 |

While shopping at Ross, we were told to try coming here for lunch. From the outside one would think it's a worn down hole in the wall. Walking in, we were totally mesmerized by the character of the place. Totally fell in love with the cafeteria style restaurant and ambience. There was so much variety of food offered, there truly is something there for everyone. Quality of the food was very good in my opinion especially for the price you pay. I went for the pizza ($4/slice) which was very very good and comparable in price, my girlfriend did the turkey and fixings and said it was the juiciest she's had in a long time. We got a table on the third floor in an alcove overlooking the whole restaurant with chandeliers dangling above us. What was supposed to be a quick grab and go ended up being a 2.5 hour lunch. Will definitely come here again the next time we're in LA. Great little stop whether your with friends or family.

Cool bizarre spot

By Burgerbunz |

This place is basically a cafeteria and has its main area look like a forest/park. It's nice to visit just to see the place and have a quick meal or drink. They have candy, chocolate and also main dishes and pastries. Most of them look good. I just had a rainbow jell-o. Looks nice but doesn't taste much.

Like a beautiful but tasteless pastry

By Gabby92399 |

This Los Angeles classic is like a beautiful, fluffy pastry that is disappointingly tasteless and over priced. We visited as a family and were disappointed in the quality, the chaos in the dining rooms (all levels) and most especially the ridiculous prices. Additionally we were really disappointed with the bar. I paid an average of $14 per drink (my adult children had a cocktail with dinner) which is higher than what we pay in Hollywood. The cocktails were mostly ice. I had to point out to the bartender that even with an overflow glass of ice the cocktail didn't even reach the 3/4 mark on the glass. She laughed and added water...WTH? Margaritas aren't made with water. I was also intrigued with a practice I've yet to see. All the bartenders dipped a straw in every drink mixed and tasted. Of course the straws were thrown out and I'm not suggesting that it was improper to validate the taste was consistent with the cocktail recipe. However an experienced bar tender knows how to make a proper mix without tasting and amending the original concoction. Had this been a $5 margarita I would've been more tolerant of the amateur set up, but I paid top dollar for low quality, low grade drinks and service. Bottom line is never again will we visit Cliftons. BTW if you're looking for parking, the best spot is across the street at the St Vincent's Jewelry Center parking lot. You pay on the way out, credit card only (no cash accepted). We visited on a Sunday and it was $6 all day. The alternative is to take the Metro link and get off at a nearby station (7th street) but we were dressed up and it was a bit much in heels to make the walk so we drove.

Eclectic Surroundings

By SFO45 |

Clifton's was closed for awhile to remodel. It's a bit of an institution in downtown LA, and there's a lot to see and take photos of on its three floors. It's a cafeteria, but an innovative one with great food--we had chicken pot pies. There is also a carving station and many varieties of food, as well as a full bar. This is an historic property dating from the 1920s..

Food that hits the spot in an awesome setting...

By Corrie B |

This place was awesome! Such cool decor, great cafeteria style food, that really hit the spot... the only shame was that because it was Sunday night, he tiki bar on the Third floor was closed! But it was an awesome dining experience...

Magical

By Laurs V |

Ended up here on happy hour, drinks were very cheap and you could ad quite a big sample drink for 35c to your order. The interior is beyond cool. Big up for the fireplace and jazz.

Unique place

By jalma3 |

Loved the old fashioned cafeteria style restaurant. Good variety of food to choose from. Our dishes were delicious. Would recommend everyone to stop by.

Over the top great

By Kat R |

Wow wow wow. Everyone needs to go there at least once, if not regularly. Words cannot explain the experience... Crazy, sophisticated beyond belief, perfectly executed time travel through many imaginary and historical eras, all in one massive building, chokablock full of antiquities and flights of fancy.... Love it. I want to live there for a week..... People watch, soak in the ambience.

Saturday night live music is the best!

By Caroline L |

We came here with a couple of friends who had never been and we ended up dancing the night away. On Saturday nights, they have a big band that plays from roughly 10pm til 12:30am. The place gets packed but we had no problem finding some space on the dance floor. I think the multi-level set up of Clifton's really helps it to never feel over crowded even on peak nights. After we were done dancing to the band, we went to the lower level to dance again because the DJ was playing some pretty good music. Overall, you can't go wrong at Clifton's. There's no cover charge but expect $14 drinks. It's worth a visit if you haven't been. It's made to be fun, weird, and entertaining.

Downtown Gem

By RoseCityTraveler626 |

I visited the renovated Clifton's after it reopened following an extensive renovation and closure. While pricey, all of us in my group (of six) enjoyed our meals. We were there in the late morning on a Saturday, so some of us had breakfast while others had lunch. It was great to see the place open again -- and super busy -- but I am not sure the average price we paid can be sustained over the long term.

Wowowow!

By GoodToGoGirl |

You have to be in the mood for an experience! Ignore the kill-joy who called it "touristy." And if she wanted haute cuisine, she shouldn't have expected to get it from a cafeteria! This is eclectic and historic. And FUN! We started with a drink in the Gothic Bar, and enjoyed sitting and talking and people watching. The night we were there, the dishes of note were the chicken tenders and the beef pot pie. Some of the other dishes were just average. But this is way better than any cafeteria I've ever tried! And with a lot more personality. The servers were happy and on-point. Very good service.

This is a fun, eclectic place to visit

By Brian H |

Overall it was a very nice experience, and we were glad to have checked it out knowing it was such an iconic location in downtown L.A. The food was quite good (especially for a cafeteria style serving), but we felt it was a bit overpriced overall.

Very eclectic

By Nigel C |

Hidden spot worth the visit. Multiple levels with different bar themes in each. Lot of stuff to look at and walk around and large enough for the crowds. Top floor tiki bar fun, good friendly staff but draft beer hit and miss. Mid floor cold and dark but has side room with music and private events. Main floor some seating available. We were in before 8 on Friday and was starting to get busy when we left

LA Landmark

By Charity T |

This place is an awesome and bazaar LA landmark. Fun and interesting lounge and cafeteria. They have several floors. The bottom floor features the cafeteria and the upper floors are for drinking. There are random taxidermy animals throughout Clifton's including a whole body lion. They have a featured $.39 cocktail for happy hour. This is a fun and different place in downtown LA that everyone should try at least once.

A wide selection, interesting ambiance, but hot as h!@#

By MediaguyMetroDetroit |

So, this place is interesting. Parking is nearby (across the street in a parking garage). The first level has 3 parts: - entry takes you past a little store which didn't seem to be manned. - you then walk towards the back to start to find stations with different themed food selections (carving meats, breads, burgers, pizza, desserts, etc) - pick up a tray and start piling on So, this part is ok except we were there in July and the place was boiling hot ... I barely could stand being in the place. It's never fun to be sweating over your food before you pay for it... yuck! TURN UP THE AIR!! It's nice they have a coke flavor station machine but I don't think refills are included (not sure about that). Once you pay, you can sit at some tables on the 1st floor, or venture upstairs to odd mix of dark wood and woodland creature decorated areas. There was also live band playing 30's-40's music which was cool. At least this floor was air conditioned but cooling down in heavy sweat just doesn't allow one to enjoy your food. The third floor has restrooms (very small) and more seating areas (not to eat per se) but to hang out with your buds. It's a very interesting and old place with charm and wit and takes you back to a golden era of long ago. Oh, the food. It's ok. However, the irony was that I was boiling hot but my pizza (even after being fire heated) was cold as a stone. yuck! I'd recommend a visit but it's unlikely I'd ever go back.

Go See History and the New Downtown L.A.!

By Salton_Sea_Lass |

I wouldn't have been anywhere near here had it not been for the Cat Video Festival held at the nearby Ace Hotel that I was willing to drive up from the low desert to attend. I lived near Los Angeles in the 80s when downtown was a very dirty and scary place. I recall well having street people approach our car at red lights when we went to the old theater complex. Was I ever amazed upon returning nearly three decades later. There's still a ways to go, but instead of a place just full of gang bangers, zombied addicts, panhandlers, sex workers, cops and sirens, that night last June I saw happy young couples everywhere going to restaurants and shows at brightly lit restored theaters dating from LA's Golden Age. I felt it has almost a New York City feel to it. So this is one great reason to go to Clifton's. Another is the history of a very great place. For me personally it was touching because my dad would drive the family here from OC at least once a year back in the 60s. I was happy to see the things that enchanted me as a child: the big waterfall, the little gnome's home in the upper corner, all the animals, etc. More importantly this was run by someone very noble who in hard times (before there was a complex welfare system) would let the poor eat for free and back when many restaurants along Route 66 refused to serve African Americans, Clifton's welcomed them. Check out the booth where Ray Bradbury ate, both in poverty and affluence. Also see the meteorite at the bar. I think Sunday schools, catechism classes, and all other religious and humanistic places of instruction should make a field trip to the glass case on the second floor to see the silver tea pot and read the letter of apology from the woman who had stolen it, then returned it some 40 years later. Lastly, I just love an old fashioned cafeteria because I can see what I'm choosing. I knocked off a star because I'd like to see some major vegetarian main dishes (not only is it now 21st century LA, it's also good ecology) and I felt our bill was a bit over the top expensive for the small meals my pal and I chose. It was dark and trendy inside with nice jazz and well dressed couples everywhere; I'd like to return again during the day for brunch. (BTW I think for old times' sake, they kept the famously weird jello desserts.)

A Treasure not just in LA, but Anywhere

By GrantGustafson |

Hooray for the owners for taking the money and trouble to restore this collection of unusual and interesting furnishings. You could return time and again to try the different spaces,- to explore. There is so much to study and look at. It’s very large, and somewhat dark. Next time I would take a tour first to scout out a table, then come back with my food tray. The food offerings are plentiful, & basic American cuisine. We had a $10 custom salad and clam chowder. Liked it. Come hungry. I could also see just coming for a cocktail, as the 2nd floor bar is totally unique and cozy. The more you check this place out, the more you realize it’s unforgettable.

where memories are made!

By Joanne S |

We just loved this place!! Take the time out of your holiday schedule and have dinner here, we were stuck for somewhere easy to have a quick dinner while visiting DTLA This is where memories are made, so much to look at, the kids thought it was amazing and i did too!! The security guy took us upstairs for a look around as it was roped off, it was a mind blowing concept with a giant cedar tree that goes up all the levels. For the international traveller, this is so American and so great, full of quirkiness. The food was cafeteria style, fresh, good and lots of variety. Loved it!

Beware the Buffalo

By EddyDC |

What a great place to visit and spent time in. Truly a chunk of the past come back to life. It loses a star for having a tiki bar that can't make a single authentic tropical drink. Everything from the Mai Tai to the Zombie are nonstandard so don't expect to know what you're getting when you order. Be sure to see the whole place. It speaks of an older time when even restaurants were theme parks.

Truly awesome - a Must go!

By carwash182 |

In town for work, I was passing by the famous Clifton’s Cafeteria. I knew the story of the original owner and his work to rid Los Angeles of corruption and feed starving people. This place is super cool. There are so many interesting artifacts. The multiple bars and restaurants are great for a date or to just go chill with friends and family. Head to the back for the hot food cafeteria. The food is good, quick, and inexpensive. I love the unique decor, famous neon signs, and there may or may not be a speakeasy here. There isn’t, is there? This place is classy yet also kitschy. The cafeteria would be fun for kids. I bought a little sequiloia tree to plant. The Mexican chocolate cookie is amazing, but super spicy. Regular chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin pie are great for the more timid. You have to go to Clifton’s Republic.

Great visit to an iconic favorite

By BobNGoleta |

We had visited this historic restaurant on our first trip to LA quite a few years ago. It was definitely a unique and campy throwback to a bygone era. We were concerned when we learned that it had been closed for renovations last year. We thought it might lose the "charm"if they updated too much and removed all of the displays. We'll much to our relief they've kept all of the kitschy stuff at the same time as bringing the kitchen up to date. Still a great place for comfort food, excellent meatloaf, mac and cheese, turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing, as well as some tasty pumpkin pie.

Great Experience!

By Trish J |

As a child, my mother and I would take the streetcar downtown to shop and have lunch at Clifton’s Cafeteria. Oh so many years later and on a whim, I decided to return. It is a very fun place, although after being refurbished, there is no resemblance to the original. As you enter, there is a sign that says you are welcome to look around before making a choice of meal. This is great because I always feel as though I am going to miss something ahead and want to know all my choices up front. There are so many different types of food for everyone, young and old. I had the chicken pot pie which was not only delicious but served in a very creative way. A great place to visit in downtown L.A.!

A must-experience

By Margaret W |

Friends were looking for "weird, yummy, funky" and this was just the thing. A rare and hilarious and pretty delicious dining experience downtown. Go for the fun of it. Delicious steak chili. Reasonable prices.

what a wonderful place!

By hesterp |

I recently had lunch in downtown Los Angeles at Clifton's Cafeteria. I suggest you walk around the place and just take it all in- there is so much to see and so many stations for food. I had the chicken pot pie which I discovered is a favorite dish for those who are frequent visitors. If you are looking for a really unusual eating experience- this is the place to go.

Old Time LA Experience!

By Naturespeak |

I would go here just for the quirky, old LA atmosphere, but having great food is a double whammy! This is a must visit place in downtown. The atmosphere is part curiosity cabinet, part classic national park. With giant trees, chandeliers, taxidermy, and oodles of nostalgia it can only be compared to the Bubble Room in Captiva. Just a super fun place! Now add fantastic mac'n cheese, turkey dinners, desert, and fresh fish. Such a winner. I ate the mac'n cheese because a woman in line raved about it. She was right. It was delicious. Also brought home an almond croissant for the next day's breakfast. Companion raved about her mahi mahi sandwich and cupcake. Definitely a new favorite place.

Perfect Place to Party With Friends

By Rockstar64 |

Note: they charged us a 10 dollar cover and there is usually a short line. The cover charge is totally worth it because this place feels like visiting multiples clubs/bar all in one. It’s perfect to roam around with friends. I’ve also never been to a place with such free and available seating areas that can accommodate groups of various sizes. Drinks: it’s about 15 bucks for a speciality cocktail. They are tasty and strong! The only criticism I have is their mixed drinks taste weird. I can’t tell why. Maybe they are using flat soda or they are using cheap liquor even if you’re requesting a higher brand. Who knows? But they are strong. Stick to the speciality drinks, especially in the tiki room - they are good!

Nothing quite like it

By bizfamilyfun |

I was lucky enough to see the place right before it closed for the big renovation. It was magical even then. I only wish I had taken photos. We explored the whole place. I had waited years to go back. I would go by every time i was in LA just hoping it would be open. I finally was in LA after it had re-opened. I was so excited to bring my son. I checked the webpage to make sure it would be open since I had to take a rideshare from Long Beach. I got there and it was closed! It was supposed to be open but was not! I still recommend it highly. I still want to go back. Just don't spend a bunch of money to get there from nearby unless you can verify for sure that it is open.

Poor rating based on our service.

I was really looking forward to seeing this iconic restaurant during our trip to L.A. and was disappointed. The ambiance was nice, and the bar is gorgeous. It was not busy, only a handful of people eating and drinking. However, the "concierge" said there was a 10 minute wait to get in to the cafeteria and gift shop area. Okay, so we waited directly in front of him while he looked at us. He then let others in over the next 15 minutes. I asked him what was happening... and he didn't know who I was. SIGH. So we were finally allowed into the food area, a large cafeteria that has more seating....it was empty. No long lines or customers. We waited so they could look important. We left without buying anything. All I wanted was rainbow jello but instead we got a bad memory.

Hit and Miss

By Mary C |

It was an very tasteful joint for a cafeteria. Maybe too old school for me. Anyway the food was good but not the greatest. Service was pure cafeteria with a flare. Ate tuna sampler. Unfortunately, needed salt or mayo or both also very dry. Never again. Purchased a croissant ham and cheese sandwich to share and it was good but too greasy. Might try again, someday. Oh yes I had a taste of the chicken pot pie and it was delicious. Very well marinated and plenty of veggies. I definitely will purchase my own on my next visit.

Nostalgia

By richardgregg11 |

This place is a must not only to eat at the cafeteria but to spend time inside gazing at every floor and the magic it has to offer. Great food, great staff very friendly and helpful. We will be back again

Great atmosphere food hiss or miss

By Trishyco |

We came on Super Bowl Sunday to celebrate a birthday. Parking is $6 and directly across the street. Food is arranged in a few different stations and I did the the tradional meal with roast beef and two sides. I was a little disappointed that by the time I got to my table almost everything was room temp or cold. The total bill was $28 which I was surprised considering it didn't include any fancy fish or sirloin. Basically you come for the kitsch factor because the place is really fun and there us a lot to look at. There was a jazz group playing too.

Fun Place

By dogpup94 |

This is a fun place to go with friends or couples. The food is good, not great but good. And the aesthetics are perfect, and music is perfect mood setting music and the lighting is nice and mysterious. I recommend coming with that special someone or friends :) you will have a great time

Place to Go

By ProfAragon |

Clifton's is well-known and often very busy. I had a good lunch there and have been to Clifton's previously. The price point is good, too. It's a good place to go and check out.

So many choices!! And wonderful atmosphere!

By Kristi G |

Clifton's has so many options for food from the cafeteria (Carvery/Thanksgiving style plates, Pizzas, Potpies and oodles of desserts)! Definitely no issue for the gluten free person in our party. If you have a group over 4 people, you probably want to call ahead to reserve seating. The atmosphere is unique and a must see!

Museum meets cafeteria but needs to add more service

By Wendya01 |

It's sidewalk sign advertised "magic hour" - beckoning the unknowing passer byer to take a peak inside. Located on historic Broadway, the curiosity about its glamorous hay day finally lures you inside. Stepping inside you realize, regardless of the hour, you have entered into a magic land indeed. Lofty ceiling with redwood tree pillars and tables perched on tiered levels of what appears to be a mountainside. The decor was sensational with taxidermied animals from North America on display. The upper levels are equally awesome with its antique chic decor and exotic animal displays. There is even a secret bar located on the 4th floor decorated in a South Pacific theme. The route to accessing this bar was part of the adventure. Cliftons' as we learned was not a restaurant, but a cafeteria located in the back of the ground level. You will not be greeted by a host, nor will you automatically know where to go or what to do. It's a Rather confusing place when you are trying to pick up your jaw up from the floor. The food was ok and reasonably priced for bussing around your own tray. Not a dinner date spot, but definitely a cozy cocktail date venue. As much as I loved what I saw and enjoyed learning a bit about the history of the place, It would rank a ton higher in my book if it added a greeter at the front door.

It's as good as they say!

By Arlene H |

I was in downtown LA with a friend who had this place on her bucket list, so we went. We were not disappointed! The front of the place is a lot of rockwork, waterfalls, and a fireplace with comfy leather couches...the back is where the food resides - just follow the crowds, you'll find it! The cool, Art-Deco vibe is present and accounted for, along with yummy comfort food: salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, and a carving station with hot choices. Don't miss the mac and cheese!!

as always we love stopping here on the way through the city

By milvetmac |

we stop here almost religiously when we travel to that side of the city, if youre ok with cafeteria style fine dining & cuisine then this place is for you! do you have kids? picky eaters? you cant beat this place if everyone is wondering what sounds good... delicious everytime and we have never had one issue in the few years weve been going there...

Curious place with a nice meal selection

By hppytrvler |

I attended a 4th of July event at Cliftons for Military personnel. It was great to dress up in 40s attire and take in the nostalgic atmosphere and vibe with my elderly parents. The meal was wonderful and good portions. The live musical entertainment and jive dancing was fun. I would recommend!

Have to see the classics

By Alzeegator |

Went for lunch before taking a down town L A walking tour. I had the NY cheese cake, I think about $5 and the chicken pot pie about $10 and a root beer about $3. The cheesecake was great and the pot pie very good. It's a cafeteria so don't expect 5 star service or food but is wacky and fun. If you're not aware Clifton's Cafeteria is chocked full of eclectic stuff, like a stuffed bear and a Giant Redwood growing out of the middle of the dinning area. I wouldn't eat here every day but I like visiting the classics and it is different.

Forget the food, go to the crazy bars and wild dance floor upstairs!

By SvalbardGuy |

I don't know why you'd eat the cafeteria-style food here, it's OK but there's so much better all around the neighborhood. I suggest eating elsewhere but then show up around 9:00 or later for drinks in one of the craaaaazy themed bars, such as the Tiki Lounge (wild decor, awesome South Pacific-themed drinks, and even a 15-foot Chris Craft launch in the middle of the room!). Then closer to 10:00, head up to the top floor (through a winding staircase accessed via a secret mirrored door) to cut a rug. To go wild. To dance, probably swing style, to an outrageous live band from New Orleans. The people are insane, the music is infectious, and the overall experience is incredible! (Plus if you don't know how, they probably have a 20-minute dance lesson around 9:30 to help beginners enjoy themselves.) Clifton's is absolutely great, but this is *not* your father's Clifton's!!!

Very very cool place

By Pete K |

Kind of a blast from the past very cool different and unique highly recommend going there food was great atmosphere even better it's hard to explain that you could find a place like this rate in hell he would definitely go back again and again

Very hit or miss

By 1Daisy2000 |

If you remember the old Cliftons or other cafeteria style places, this is not what you're looking for. The picture of the desserts is accurate but most of the other food is more like a food court, with lines for the different entree options. When we were there they were of several things and the lines moved so slowly. So, my son stood with a full tray of food waiting for us to get ours, then we waited to pay, none of us had hot food by the time we found a table. The food was mixed: turkey-good, clam chowder-watery, jello-pretty but tasteless. We actually had a table before we went to get food, left our coats and drinks there, and went to the cafeteria. When we came back our things were moved as the staff were setting up for a very large party. We didn't like where they put us so we moved again. We ate for almost 45 minutes; the other party had not arrived as we left. The restrooms are scary.

Perfect place for a downtown nightcap

By cash d |

I really love grabbing a drink here although weirdly I have never tried the food. I love the decor, it feels like proper old school Los Angeles. Love the taxidermy and velvet couches. I just like the rich indulgent feel of the space sipping on a glass of cab. Anytime I have out of towners visiting dtla I take them here for the experience.

Clifton's Cafeteria (Old school done right)

By Daniel R |

This is a wonderful place that both satisfies your tastebuds and your eyes and ears. It is a cafeteria style restaurant where you grab a try and follow the line down so you can choose from a large variety of foods. We went on a Sunday and had a blast eating, listening to the live jazz band and seeing a couple ballroom dance to the music, (they were not part of the show, just regular customers) They have a great carving station with beef, chicken and turkey. An amazing set of pot pies, (chicken, beef, and one more I can't remember at this point). The food ranges from vegetarian to traditional American and you get to actually talk to the people that make the food. Personally I like to walk around the different stations and see what's available for the day and then go back to the starting line to get what I I just saw. Aside from the food the place is a real treat to just explore and look at. They have a total of 5 floors but only three were open when we went. The decoration is like a blast from the past filled with stuffed animals that have been there forever. Stuffed buffalo, white tiger, peacocks, and a bear are just some of many animals to see all around the place. The restaurant is themed after a forest with giant tree that goes all the way up to the 4th floor in the middle of the building. There are many nooks and crannies all throughout the place that takes some time to explore, but is time well spent. Even the downstairs bathroom is great to check out. The second floor bar and lounge is just exquisite and more than willing to provide you with a huge assortment of some of the most delicious libations anywhere that I've been. My fave, the whisky sour. So if your in down town Los Angeles it's a must to see and eat any day of the week. They have vale parking right in the front or you can park your own car right across the street in one of many parking lots near by. Finally if you want to enjoy a great club they have one that opens on Saturday and is stunning to look at. Just make sure you dress to impress. Well that's all for now. I hope this helps and that you enjoy your visit. Next time you're in the area.

The place to go

By Cristina C |

Clifton's is more than a cafeteria, it is everything. It have many rooms with diferent environments. It is not a crazy place couse young people, it is the place to talk, listen music or just hung up around. It is a building with history and the topic is 1950, the dancer are expectacular, the ambience is amazing . I love the fact of breating clean air free of smoke or other things. Do not miss the turkey pie, prices are ridicules inexpensive comparing the quality of the place.

Out of the ordinary dining experience

By Louis D |

Wow, talk about a place that has character. Yeah it is cafeteria but the American style food is good and portions generous. Having just flown in to LAX from ATL with no meals on the airplane it is a treat to walk to a place where you can have a hearty meal. Fun decorations and nice music. Plenty of people including families! Nice selection of beverages and very tempting deserts.

The Cafeteria Republic is Changing

By Nick A |

We showed up just minutes before 6:00 pm last Saturday night, Jan. 5th not knowing the situation. They opened at 6:00pm sharp and said the cafe was closed but the bar was open and they were only serving bar food. Not wanting that, we left. We were saddened to learn this after hearing they had re-opened. Unfortunately only serving cocktails.

Decent food

By Raefearless |

Awesome looking place, decent food. The macaroni n cheese was great, with real cheese, unlike most of the time because the USA doesn't know what cheese is. The chicken not so much but still decent. Good meal overall, even if I'd say the value for the price is definitely poor (a glass of wine costs the same price as a plate, approximatively $15). I should have taken a sandwich, they seemed really good and they have a nice and fancy choice of breads. The cafeteria's staff was awesome, really friendly and polite! Had a tiny problem with the bartender about the price. Decent place, and if you like stuffed animals, you definitely must go there.

Tiki Bachelor Party

By Matt B |

We were up on the top floor and had a great time. The tiki décor was impressive and made it a fun night. But the best part was the hospitality we received from Michelle, and her stories of the bar’s history. Thanks for giving us the tour.

Something new at every turn

By Froglovinlady |

Clifton’s is not just a bar, it is an experience! (It is usually a restaurant, too, but the kitchen is in a remodel, so we couldn’t get food.) Each floor has a different theme. It is a little reminiscent of the rainforest cafe with a giant tree, but it has a much cooler vibe and uniqueness about it. From a hidden tiki bar, to swing dancing, to the different ambiances on every floor, nook, and cranny, there is so much to see and do here. If you are into tours, you can learn all about the richness of Clifton’s history. (Or you can read about it.) It is one of few remaining Green Book locations, just to name one fun fact. Even if you do not drink alcohol, it would be worth your time to grab a soda and explore this treasure. We had so much fun! Do note, if you can’t handle taxidermy, a few of the areas won’t be to your liking.

Historical Revival

By KatieCrippen |

Welcome back Clifton's! After so much anticipation, I was very happy with all the food and the environment. The lines were very long and they don't have very many vegetarian options, but what they had was great tasting. We really want to come back and go to the Tiki Room!!!

Simply Excellent

By gol1ca |

Upon a recommendation from my buddy, we went there twice! First to the tiki bar, then the next night to the cafeteria. Which tops most Las Vegas cafeterias. Selection was astounding.

Cliftons Cafeteria has been remodeled

By bld111 |

Had a nostalgic visit with my family to revisit the place my parents took me 65 years ago. They still have the same mashed potatoes with gravy and jello that I remember as a kid. The decor is beautiful and as a bonus they had a great band playing as we ate. Enjoy your visit.

Eccentric and Awesome!

By fishyb2017 |

I love this place and can't wait to go back. The food was way better than I had been led to believe and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. So they say this was the inspiration for Walt Disney and the instant I walked through the front door I could see why they say so. Visually extraordinary, interesting and fun. I highly recommend visiting and exploring and if you have time have a meal there too. They had a live skiffle band while I ate!

Why all the hype?

By AeronauticalEngineer |

Not sure what all the hype is about. We went here over the weekend just because my wife dragged me all the way from orange county claiming this was the "cafe" everyone was talking about. May be she didnt read the whole sentence. This was the "cafe" everyone was taking about....avoiding. It was just a cafeteria with 3 sections, 2 for food and one for dessert, the food selections were just junk, the dessert looked good but we were there to eat (first). You grab a tray, and get your food and pay at the cashiers and get a table. WOW, not! Ended up walking out hungry to find another place within walking distance. Plenty of better options in the area.

Not worth the drive

By tinacs2015 |

We drove from the coast especially to go to cliftons after reading about it and it was disappointing , food was cold and badly laid out and it was all much smaller than it sounds not in a particularly nice part of town either so don't make special visit is my advice there's loads of much nicer places to eat !

Hipsterized Version of a Timeless Classic

By fcline2016 |

If you have no memories of the original Clifton's Cafeteria, you probably won't be disappointed, but for those who remember, you will be shocked at the high prices for what is basically cafeteria food - and not any better than the original cafeteria food. The new owners have focused on the liquor business, without which the original cafeteria thrived. The cafeteria line moves so slowly that you will have tired, "cafeteria" feet by the time you are able to carry your cafeteria tray to your cafeteria table. The charming old sign that said, "Pay What You Wish" is gone along with the spirit of the original owner who placed it there. Hopefully, the $14 drinks will pay for the $14 million architectural rehab, which I'll admit was nicely done, but who couldn't accomplish at least as much with $14 million!

Great decor

By laura m |

Meant to eat in here for lunch but forgot our wallet but went inside anyway to look around at the decor. Very cool and unique place. Make sure you check the days and time it is open before you go there, it was only open Thur - Sat when we went

Never Again. Stay Away.

By Redd H. |

Avoid this place. I had high hopes for this historic location but, sadly, we were hugely disappointed. It feels like an empty shell of gross drinks and bad service. The actual venue was once really cool, and you can tell, but it’s not clean and smells more like an abused dive bar than a classy night club. Bad music and fuzzy speakers that make conversation impossible. Worst of all, my girl had her purse stolen and we were rudely told that they couldn’t do anything. Stay away unless you’re forming a crime ring.

Really, really fun place

By WassimCornet |

A great way to travel among carefully orchestrated environments spread out on different floors. Visitors have the choice of eating at the cafeteria and taking their meals to different floors and lounges. They also have the choice of grabbing a drink at the bar, which sometimes has live music. A great atmosphere!

Very crowded, quirky place

By trishakelley |

This place is interesting. We came to swing dance on Saturday night and it was fun but the dance floor is tiny compared to the number of people trying to dance. I don’t recommend Clifton’s for that. However, the other floors are really funny. Each floor has a different theme and there is a huge tree that goes up the middle. They have a nightly burlesque show. There is a huge stuffed bison and other random things like that. It’s not your typical club but if you’re looking for an interesting place to poke around, this might be the place for you.

A Spark Of Whimsy In An Otherwise Too-Logical World

By DL390 |

This amazing piece of old-time Los Angeles heritage is looking fabulous after its four-year refurbishment. It’s under new management yet lovingly restored and, at the same time, tweaked for the 21st century. The historic core of Clifton’s is the original 1935 cafeteria, themed as a piece of the Great Outdoors, recreating the giant redwood forests of northern California. The recent additions take what could have been just a hokey conceit and extend it in a delightful way – a mezzanine cut through three floors at the rear of the building, with a giant faux redwood tree stretching upwards, a fireplace at its base, next to the stately Monarch Bar. The idea was to give Clifton’s an evening personality and it now comes alive after dark for visitors and Downtown locals alike. There are three bars in all (rumour has it that a fourth will soon be unveiled) including the Gothic Bar, immediately above the Monarch. Yet the most wonderful part of the new Clifton’s is the hardest to find (but persevere, it’s worth it). A mirror panel on the second floor opens to reveal a staircase and that leads to the Pacific Seas, a jewel of a tiki bar that houses memorabilia from other now-closed LA tiki bars as well as such curiosities as a full-size 1930s mahogany Chris-Craft speedboat. The Pacific Seas also pays tribute to another themed Clifton’s restaurant, the South Seas, that existed nearby on Olive Street from the late 1930s until it closed in 1960. Go for lunch, order some of Clifton’s most popular items, such as the mac’n’cheese and the Jello desserts, but come back at night when the ambience is completely different with live music, cocktails and a sophisticated retro vibe. The man behind Clifton’s rejuvenation is Andrew Meieran, who opened the steampunky bar known as The Edison in 2007 and is generally credited as being one of the major forces in the rejuvenation of the Downtown district. Here is a developer with a reverence for LA history while being mindful that, to survive, it must pay its own way; in making Clifton’s a night-time as much as a daytime destination, Meieran has pointed it in the right direction. Over the years, Clifton’s has attracted generations of Angelenos as well as such quirky minds as Walt Disney, Ray Bradbury, Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, and David Lynch; it’s a part of LA history in a city that has rarely held such considerations as important. Under new stewardship, Clifton’s future appears very bright.

Great place for Halloween

By Chris E |

Good decorations and great music. The staff put in a lot of effort and made the night wonderful. Will definitely return next year.

What an awesome spot

By D46NY |

Stayed in downtown for a conference. Not much going on. Found this spot on my last night thanks to reviews. Wow, what a cool place. Each level is a totally different experience. A must see

Amazing evening out

By VBJudy |

Start with dinner in the basement renovated cafeteria for typical cafeteria fare. Nothing spectacular food wise , but the setting is the best surprise in the city. Plan to stay for the evening. It just gets better and better. Check out all the floors. And all the bars on all the floors. Look for the bikini clad butterfly ladies waltzing around. Listen for the live band playing swing music and of course check out the secret tiki bar. This was the best surprise of our visit. A definite must!!!

Experiential Dining with a Hint of 1940s LA

By Matthew L |

Friends took us for a late Sunday lunch and it was a trip. The food is decent, not amazing, but the setting is why you go. The interior is full of taxidermied critters, giant trees, and rocks. Seating areas are carved out on multiple levels. Every where you look there is something interesting. We wandered down by the ATM machine. A glimpse into the past. And in the basement near the restrooms is the oldest working neon known. There is $6 parking right across the street. It's a trip!

Unique not-to-be-missed experience

By Shellco |

This review covers the facility itself & the bars, but not the food. We came here one evening for a birthday, not knowing what to expect. Ours jaws literally dropped upon entering Cliftons. The place is like nothing you have ever experienced before. There are multiple levels with a different themed bar on each level (and different themed drinks for each area). There are giant redwoods, waterfalls, life-sized dioramas & ephemera galore. There are secret hide-aways and I'm not sure that we found all of them. The staff was incredibly friendly & helpful. The drinks were good, the DJs and music on the different levels were all really good. Apparently they have different themed nights with bands & swing dancing etc which would probably be really fun. Do not miss the newly renovated Tiki room on the top floor. Incredible fun! We really enjoyed the visit & look forward to going back.

We went TWICE in one week!

By 8nikkig |

It bothers me when people write reviews saying "go somewhere else" I'd rather read what they liked and what they didn't like. Everyone likes different things and do my husband and myself, we absolutely LOVED this place. We were in Los Angeles and ended up going twice, we liked it so much. I'm 29 but I'm really into the 50s and 60s and the cafeteria style reminds me of some of the older movies I've watched. That's what really made this place a comforting spot for me. It reminds me of stories I've heard from older generations and I just love that I can feel like I'm a part of that if only for 1 meal. The first time we went it was on a weeknight and was pretty empty, yet cozy. We parked across the way in a garage. The second time we went, we took uber and it was a busy Friday night. It was a completely different atmosphere on a Friday night than the weeknight, but that's okay. We got two different experiences and got to try different food the second time as well. On the weeknight, they had someone playing piano with a woman singing old jazz songs, and it was just so cool! I felt liked I stepped back in time. The mac n cheese was my favorite. My husbands was the corn pudding and some kind of dessert he found (sorry not sure what it was) I also had the roast chicken and marinated vegetables which were delicious to me as well. It was a bit pricey for us, but this was because we wanted to try EVERYTHING. lol. We still went back, and would again. Hopefully we find ourselves on the west coast, and at cliftons sooner than later!

Impressed

By W181624 |

Cliftons is a unique place. I went for about 2 hours for some cocktails and some food. It is multi leveled. Each level has different bars that serve different drinks. What you get at one bar another probably cant make it for you. You are welcome to take your drink throughout the venue. There are tables you can reserve. There is seating all over the place. The feel is unique. Many antiques. Mainly sailing and diving items. There is what looked like a stuffed buffalo I saw at a glance. Very dark atmosphere but lively. On the second or third floor there is a room. It has a 30s or so era live band. Everyone in there was dressed as if they came from that era and that's all they played and dance. I felt like I went back in time. Was impressed with the vibe in there. I wasn't dressed for it and felt out of place but was amazed! The rest of the venue everyone dressed from casual to a little fancy. Get there early because the line to get in gets looooooong. Will definitely go back. The cocktails we purchased from two seperate bars were superb. Even the bartenders you can see were passionate about their masterpieces. I had a whiskey sour and was definitely impressed. Pricey but worth it.

The attention to detail at this cafeteria is evident in every aspect!

By Mary H |

The attention to detail at this cafeteria is evident in every aspect, from the decor to the beautifully presented dishes. It's clear that the owners take pride in creating a memorable experience for their guests! I had a great time here!!!

Wall Drug of the West - too unique to miss!

By Jack B |

Unlike any cafeteria that I have ever seen - this place is amazing on so many fronts. Islands of different kinds of foods - from sushi to roast turkey to pasta to pizza to meatloaf, you can find pretty much anything. And bustling - streams of people coming in. We were there early for dinner - but could barely find a place to sit, it was so full. There are more dioramas and stuffed animals than the Smithsonian, and tons of cute displays that would keep kids happy for hours. Food was good - everyone around me had meatloaf, which sadly I didn't order. Tried my wife's and wow - it was great. But it is the atmosphere that makes this worth while - just the gentle hustle and bustle dynamic of a great restaurant. I would return if in the area, it is just too unique to miss. This is exactly why I find chain restaurants so depressing - they have none of this. This will be a meal to remember.

Must pay a visit

By traveltrivia |

Clifton's Cafeteria is a tradition in Los Angeles. I used to go as a youngster, it closed down for many years, now it reopened a couple of years ago, and it is bigger and better. It has many different rooms in several levels, with an animal theme. Very interesting architecture and design. Not to be missed.

Bars open. Cafeteria closed.

By Jami |

This would probably be a 5-star review if I had gone to Clifton’s for a night out with friends. But I’m instead, I went with my family on a Saturday afternoon only to find the bars open and the cafeteria closed. In hindsight, I should have checked their website which shows the cafeteria closed all the time and no anticipated re-opening date. The atmosphere is like a movie set with dramatic staircases, rustic and/or antique furniture, and several stuffed forest creatures. The cocktail menu was intriguing, but alas it was a family outing and not girls’ night out. We looked around and took some pictures, but left hungry.

Good for a quick self service lunch

By Guybrush79 |

We had a good lunch at Clifton's. The decor is very particular, prices are ok, ideal if you want to have a quick meal and/or sit in an uncommon setting.

lots to look at

By Gretchen S |

i had the smoked ham mac and cheese and stuffing with gravy. ($14:99 Very good I cleaned my plate! They also offer meatloaf and turkey. There is a excellent selection of deserts . You walk around the food fill your try then they ring you up and you can go sit anywhere in the unique dinning area. This is a must see if you are in the Downtown area. It's in the "jewelry district " of Los Angeles CA Food and Jewelry how can you go wrong?

Expensive & stupid!

By funfamily07 |

Don’t waste your time & money! Super expensive. We feel hoodwinked! If you feel compelled to come then be sure you don’t pay a cover. Customer service is a joke. If someone is awful to you, management won’t do anything except maybe comp your drink. Such a ridiculous place. Go somewhere else. Anywhere else! We are beyond disappointed with what went down during our visit.

Amazing Place...more than just a place to eat

By RolandFinn |

I had never heard of this place before and I lived in the LA area for decades! It took my daughter to discover it and take me there. For those who live in the suburbs and almost never venture into downtown LA, this may be uncomfortable. You will be walking from your parking place (choose wisely) to the cafeteria through some very "downtown" areas with people sleeping on the street and panhandling. But, it's an experience more like an adventure. We parked in a lot on Hill Street near 8th and paid a flat rate $5. Rates change during the day so be careful. Check the signs and ask. Some lots charge by the 10 minutes and the parking could cost you $12 or more. I would have to describe the interior as part Disney and part natural history museum. There are many levels to explore and it's best to spend some time looking around before actually going into the cafeteria section. Remember, this is a cafeteria where each item you select is a separate charge. Do not think this is an all-you-can-eat buffet or you'll be paying a King's Ransom just to get out. Meals are not cheap but the experience is worth the cost. And, what is a bonus is that the food we ordered was actually quite tasty. Many times a restaurant that has a "theme" or anything special doesn't have good tasting food. But, Clifton's does. So, brave the very urban and downtown environs and give Clifton's a visit. You'll be amazed and glad you did.

Very disappointing .....

By A D |

We went as a group after doing a tour of downtown Los Angeles. This restaurant has been in existence for a long time and has a very eclectic and unusual interior. We thought it would be interesting and it was. However, the food and the service was terrible. The hot food we had was nearly cold. One of our group had a sandwich from the deli counter and the server was very rude to her. We will not be going back.

Good fun

By mweaver1127 |

This place is an LA tradition. It's got a good north woods feel to it . It is buffet style good old fashion no frills but good food . Maybe just a bit pricer than the quality of the food but worth the visit

One and Only...You Must Go!

By Tessx |

One of the original themed cafeteria restaurants. Organized around dioramas and Desert Canyon scenes. Excellent selection of food with prompt friendly service and excellent quality. They have recently begun offering jazz bands on the weekends. A happy place and right across the street from convenient parking. They also have an ornate bar on the second and third floors. This place has something for every age group from Toddlers on up! We definitely are planning to return.

Delightful Surprise

By annetteart2017 |

My friend and I attended a special Memorial day program impersonating the old Hollywood canteen. The actors did a great job. I was pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and corn. All were delicious. I love meatloaf but rarely get good meatloaf in a restaurant. Clifton's meatloaf was excellent. The servers put some cheese of some kind and a sauce on the corn which was delicious and brought it to a next level taste experience. My friend had roast beef that was well done but it was still moist and flavorful. The mixed vegetables were way overcooked and we avoided them. The dessert was okay but there were many choices and I would go again to sample some of the other choices. Clifton's recently reopened after an over 2 year refurbishing. It is fun to see the murals and stuffed animals and different elements of a bygone era. I would like to see the owners continue to refurbish this grand old place and bring it totally back to its former glory.

Unique In a perfect way

The atmosphere is very cool. Lots to see from eclectic to interesting. There are many photo opportunities, from the ambiance to the food. Music in the background allow conversations without interruption so it's a great date location. The ambiance is terrific for the young and old and everyone in between. The food is good;maybe very good but could use just a little loving from seasonings. As an example, the roast beef was cooked perfectly, but needed salt. Little things like that. Huge selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and desserts to finish off the meal. Very cool all around and worth a trip here.

Grew up enjoying the Clifton's in the Lakewood Mall. Best Mac n Cheese ever! Going to an event at The Globe tonight and decided to have dinner here. Wonderful ambiance, great food selection typical of a cafeteria. The décor is unique, and relaxing. A little walk down memory lane thinking of the stories my parents told me about the cable car in LA and the special treat of a meal at Clifton's. Invokes wonderful thoughts and memories! Enjoy:)

Perfect Lunch Break in your Downtown LA adventure

By Chazz B |

This is an institution in historical Los Angeles, it has nostalgia, imagination and refreshing. We stopped in after an early morning of walking downtown. A great place with AC, cool atmosphere, and great food & drinks. They've kept the mountain decor but updated the lighting and trim. Also the 2 bars have been added with class & some great new cocktail selections. The cafeteria has a decent selection of food to enjoy. We personally enjoyed the Roast Beef sandwich and Cream of Asparagus soup. The meal was just what we needed to get a break and get rejuvenated. They have a range of drinks from sodas to craft beers. Sundays have a jazz band play with brunch menu available.

A True DTLA Gem!

We went there with the kids last weekend after they climbed at LA Boulder. It was such a fun place! I can't believe it exists! Perfect for tourists and Angelenos alike. We explored all the hidden cool stuff: a vintage switchboard downstairs and dusty old dioramas. It reminded me of a cross between the Natural History Museum in nyc and a lodge in Yosemite. And the food was surprisingly good! So many choices...My husband and I split a roast beef sandwich that was fresh and fantastic, and the kids enjoyed their meaty chili in bread bowls and fresh-squeezed limeades. The servers were cheerful and helpful. We will definitely be back and will bring visitors there.

Beware and DONT BOTHER - always closed with no warning

By Kristen P |

Be very wary of bothering to travel to come here! Clifton’s closes randomly with absolutely no warning online, Instagram, maps, anything. Absolutely unacceptable to allow your potential customers to travel from afar, pay for gas, pay for parking, deal with waking through the SUPER sketchy downtown area nearby, etc. only to find the restaurant closed at peak weekend hours. They do this OFTEN. shame on you Cliftons for not caring about your customers. And the AUDACITY to have the time to post other random promotions on Instagram the same time you’re randomly closed on a weekend night, but can’t post a warning about closures to your customers ???

good food super cool ambiance

We ate at Clifton's while vacationing in California. This place was so cool! The food is served cafeteria style. We had the meatloaf. It was good. We also had the ham, which was delicious. We also tried out some of the desserts. We had the pumpkin pie which was really yummy. We also had some type of chocolate cake which was a little rich. The staff there seemed to really enjoy their jobs. They were friendly and seemed to really just love being there. The best part was the restaurant itself. It had the best ambiance. There is a giant fake Sequoia in the middle of the restaurant with a fireplace in it. There are hidden coves and an old bar. It was just such a cool place.

Went for a birthday lunch

What a beautiful update to an old restaurant. Nice variety. Very unique inside. We really enjoyed the food. My daughters had the Thanksgiving all year plate. I had their designer pizza and shortcake soooo yummy.

Forget all your worries at Clifton's

By Nathan Wise |

I was just introduced to Clifton's on my last visit to L.A. We only had time to stay for one drink and I could have stayed all night. What an incredible setting for a bar and the Tiki Bar is fantastic. We were able to get a table and have service at our table which was very welcome. The decor and setting of Clifton's is like stepping into a movie set! You will forget all your worries while you are enjoying a cocktail and listening to the live music.

Really Fun Place in Downtown LA

Great cafeteria food in lovely building. Renovated old LA. Definitely worth it if you are downtown. Food for everyone.

Not the Same but still Cool

By John P |

Clifton’s used to be a cafeteria of kitsch. A place where you could grab a tray and eat ‘gourmet’ food from a huge diverse buffet. The perfect businessman’s lunch. What a concept! Well the cafeteria part of Clifton’s has been closed down for over a year. But the rest of the strange, picturesque palace of kitsch had been beautifully kept up and is still open for business. The downstairs bar opens at 6, and you can have a drink and eat things like sliders in under-lit elegance next to the stuffed deer, beneath the canopy of the giant faux pine tree. Talk about hip LA bar atmosphere! Problem is, with only one bartender struggling to keep up with the exotic drink orders, it’s gomma take you a while to drink and the line gets long. The 2nd floor bar opens at 7. And is even cooler. And the tiki bar on the third floor has live music and dancing for the late night barflies, but come dressed to impress or they won’t let you upstairs on popular weekend nights.

Yummy Lunch

As part of the AirBnB Open (Convention) I had the pleasure of grabbing a "quick" lunch at Clifton's on Nov 19, 2016. Passing by the Pizza section; a slice of Cheese Pizza just seemed to be calling me. A few steps over was a Sushi station and I ordered a freshly made (yes it took 8-10 minutes) worth the time to watch a craftsperson do their job. All items tasted very good, fresh and best of all the pricing was fabulous. ($9.54) Go check them out!

Brings back fond memories

I used to eat at Clifton's as a special treat back in the fifties. My mom would stop in for lunch with us when we used to shop downtown. As we moved away, much of downtown LA became seedier and run down so it was great to learn that the place was restored. Stopping in on Labor Day Sunday we could see that they restored so much of the place. From the faux interiors, stuffed animals, and running water, I felt so nostalgic. Some of the food seems like what they used to serve and it's much pricier but I think your there for the whole experience of what things were like in LA. It's worth stopping by if your in downtown.

Great piece of LA GO!

I like the cafeteria food at Cliftons: upscale and fresh. But you go here for the spectacular decor. Really unique! Great bar too- hopping fri and sat eve.

Great Historic Building

A group of us (8 + a 2 year old) went to Clifton's Cafeteria for lunch on a Saturday. Food is served old school cafeteria style. Meaning, you grab a big square try and move around various stations to create your meal and pay on your way out. I had a great meatloaf. Serving size was HUGE! I have a food allergy and there were options for me. There are multiple levels with LOTS of interesting things to see, so take some time and stroll around the place. The only thing I would say negative, is that it is very warm inside. Outside was 70 degrees. An absolutely beautiful LA November day. Inside, I was very warm. I guess the place does not have a robust A/C. We parked directly across the street. It was $6 for the day on Saturday. Metered parking on the street is available too.

Fun and interesting

First off, yay for Valet parking! Parking in DTLA can be hard so valet is always a very welcome feature. Clifton's is a super weird, interesting and fun place to have a meal or a few drinks. I love anything with fun and crazy décor so this is totally my type of place. There is stuff everywhere, from taxidermy to a giant tree with a fireplace in it, to mini waterfalls. It's definitely a cool place to check out at least once just for the experience. There are a few different bars on the different floors so it seems like it would be a cool place just to drink and hang out. My friends and I came here for lunch, which is a cafeteria style. There are many choices, everything from ready made items to ones you order from one of the cooks behind the counters. The food wasn't the best I ever had but it was ok. The employees here are amazing and will totally add to your experience.

Like stepping back in time

The decor is 5+ if you like 40's eclectic lounge style. Very, very cool interior. The cafeteria food was good solid dinner/cafeteria food. Very enjoyable for what it was, and reasonably priced. There was no wait when we arrived around 2pm on a Thursday. I imagine it could get quite crowded. I would definitely recommend a visit.

MUST SEE - Unlike anything else!!!

By Michael T |

You simply HAVE to go to Clifton's Cafeteria. It is hands down a MUST SEE when in Los Angeles. Part retro cafeteria, part hipster bar scene and part Disneyland... this is a stop for the whole family. You will be bombarded by waterfalls, giant taxidermy everywhere you look and more! The food is good, but not amazing and it's WAY overpriced for what you get. WAY. But even that didn't deter me from giving this 5 stars. You can go and get a drink here now at one of the upstairs bars. I haven't even been to all of them because they're not always open. Whether or not you eat here, make sure you explore every part of this place that is open. Go everywhere! A great experience!

Old School excellence

Excellent selection of old school food. We were able to satisfy the wants of 10 people and stay within a budget. Definitely a good choice for a large group with diverse food wants.

Fabulous Fun and Good Food

By LNLew |

You forget you're in DTLA the minute you walk into the world of Clifton's. It is full of surprises like a waterfall, a bear, and a full size redwood tree. It was even more fun than I had imagined, especially with a live band playing downstairs and a model posing for artists upstairs. There are little rooms and bar areas to explore and you can take your food anywhere. The bar areas are where you get your alcohol and they have a lot of great choices. What I was happily surprised to find was the great food! It is freshly made and there is a lot to choose from. The traditional turkey plate was good and when we ordered a mahi sandwich, it was cooked right in front of us. They have a salad station and offer vegan food too. The food isn't cheap, but the servings are good sized and tasty. You can still get cafeteria style jello, but the rest is better than that. I can't wait to go explore and eat again!
