Nice red leather booths in the bar

By sweet_insurgent |

We love the bar atmosphere, but I went for the prime rib. For the price, it's just average though.

Wonderful Experience; Great Food

By AJ S |

I had dinner at the Portland Prime with a friend. The food was flavorable. The portions were good. We had ribeye steak and the pork chop. Both entrees were cooked well, seasoned well, and very tasty. The house salad that we selected was generous. I thought the price value was good. Homemade key lime pie was great. The color was good. The flavor was great. One serving was enough for two people. It was a good experience. Our server was knowledgeable about menu items. You can not go wrong.

Terrible prime rib, but otherwise very good

By Mike P |

I hate to say it but the prime rib placed in front of me last nite was inedible. It was a 12 oz. piece of gristle that had an unpleasant odor and was tough as shoe leather. I was pretty shocked as my associate and I had been looking forward to this dinner all week. Things started off quite well. We were promptly seated by friendly staff, greeted by a very accommodating and pleasant server. The martini and Manhattan were perfect. The french onion soup was the best I've had. The prime rib was a huge dissapointment...it had a "smell" that I can't quite describe. Pleasant isn't the word. It was all gristle. Our server was very understandingand quickly removed the plates as we decided to try the rib eye instead. The rib eye was delicious and perfect. Cooked to order, with the right amount of char. the garlic mashed and broccoli were delicious as well. Our server made an excellent "save". I would return to Clyde's and try the prime rib one more time. The service, ambience and everything else was perfect...maybe a bad night for the main act.

disappointed

By Frances W |

Went here for my birthday with my family, service was slow, nice but slow. Told we don't have that several times (sugar for tea??). The prime rib was good, little on the cool side and the baked potato was literally black on top. The vegetables (cauliflower and broccoli) was dry and visibly burnt. The family that had fries reported they were stale. I feel for the price 25-30/person the quality of food was not up to my expectations. We did have late reservations (8:30) but that should not have impacted the quality of food. Really felt like we got the end of the day left overs. Very disappointed as I had been wanting to go to this place for awhile.

Insanely good meat & colourful characters

By JambianiNeil |

We had a rather quirky but delightful waitress and a nice warm booth overlooking so.e rather eccentric looking locals lining the bar counter. The Spanish coffees were awesome and did not muck about strength wise. The prime meat rib was really perfectly cooked and bursting either flavour. Very high quality meat that honestly has to be tried

Great prime rib

By Mark R |

We've been there numerous times and found this place on the internet. The prime rib is excellent and we usually go on Sunday's because they have specials on the prime rib. The staff is great and the prime rib portions are generous. We think it's the best prime rib find in Portland!

Amazing

By Susan L |

If you ever get the chance to go out for live Jazz music Sunday nights at Clydes is the ticket! There is great food, great atmosphere, GREAT MUSIC. Do try the Tidbits with mushrooms and the house salad an dressing.... wow! Absolutely my favorite

In an era of restaurants run by formula, this one stands out as unusual

By TheBlitz |

I mean ... when you walk in, there's a simulated knight in a suit of armor, the inside is fancy padded seats and surroundings like you're inside a 18th Century Spanish pirate ship, and then in the little hall to the bathroom, there are pictures of Paul Newman and Marlon Brand on motorcycles. How eclectic can you want? Service was attentive. The prime rib was .. prime rib honestly, nothing special about it though average prime rib is still prime rib. The side dishes were really well done - the crusty bread was great, the side veggies were cooked carefully and the mashed potatoes seemed like real potatoes. Definitely worth visiting.

Fireside Date night.

By tcesuzanne |

We made Reservations for 2 at 7:15pm for the fireside table. It took forever to have someone take our order...Apparently, they thought we were someone else and were expecting another couple. Usually, when you order the House Salad and Prime Rib, they would toss the salad in front of you so you can choose your personal toppings as in made to order...Not anymore. They also would serve your Prime rib in one of those big super fancy cutting containers almost like a big old fashioned bread box holder where you lift the lid. It was sliced in front of you to order along with yorkshire pudding and Green Beans and your choice of Potato..NOT ANYMORE. No Yorkshire pudding and green beans..instead it was wilted Brocolinni. My salad was OK, stuff in it that I didn't want. The Prime Rib I ordered was supposed to be served Medium Rare. The cut of meat was great however the meat was barely luke warm still Mooing. I would hate to see what Rare looks like...I have a feeling it would be cold, Mooing and running. I do not think we will be returning for Date night..maybe a lunch when were in the area and sit in the lounge. My Husbands Ribeye Steak was good though and the bread they serve before the meal was good as well. I give the food a very good rating cause I have had other dishes there in the past that were very good..mostly Lunch dishes.

Awesome Discovery

By BuzzyBelly |

Was coming home from a business trip and wanted something "beefy". When we left the airport I went on line and found this place (only about 10 minutes from PDX). The outside is a little off putting and you aren't sure what you will find inside. But was pleasantly surprised. It's a little rat pack meets mid evil! Big comfy booths, dark decor and one of the best margaritas I've had in a long time. Service is spot on - they check on you often enough so you aren't left wanting anything but not a lot so you want them to go away! My prime rib was cooked perfectly and the horseradish sauce had a nice kick to it (so many places it just tastes like sour cream and no horseradish flavor at all). I asked for double vegs instead of a potato and the asparagus was nicely done - not overcooked like most places. We'll definitely be back and try the bar next time - looked like a fun place to hand out.

R & B Lovers

By Terry F |

We love to come to Clyde's for the prime rib (rare) and the music. Great for blues and r & b. Never gone away disappointed. Good times.

Old School meat place

By quielo |

The big miss here was the lack of green goddess dressing. Other wise it was a fine experience. I took two adults and two teens and the bill was $144. One entrée at Ringside can be almost $144 so it's important to set expectations around the price point. At less than $40 a head it was a great meal. If you want a fancy meal go to Ringside and pay $150 per head. All prices without alcohol.

Super good even on a busy night

By jxnmom |

We were looking for a restaurant open on Christmas eve and this place was one of the only ones we could find open in the neighborhood. They took reservations, but were booked. However, we were told we could find a table in the lounge, which we did. The waitress as very pleasant and didn't seem stressed even tho they were very busy. We each chose the prime rib and were not disappointed. Very tasty, done just to our liking and reasonably priced. The sides were also excellent. We will definitely go back!!

Had No Idea What A Gem We'd Stumbled Upon!!!

By qfe |

What a find! We found this place on a Sunday afternoon after meandering around looking for something open before we headed to a hotel prior to an early AM Monday flight out of PDX. At first we asked to be seated in the dining room, but a peek into the bar changed our mind. Dimly lit, comfy booths, bar-only happy hour specials--what could be better? Hubby had prime rib dinner, and I had the signature creamed spinach and prime rib bites (both appetizers). Prime rib was perfectly cooked and served with creamy mashed potatoes, au jus, broccoli. Creamed spinach came in a small casserole, perfectly browned on top, and was accompanied by garlic toast points. Prime rib bites came in a shallow bowl with au jus and garnishes. Both meals were absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was a wonderful mix of old-school steakhouse and cool jazz spot (and indeed they do have live music in the bar in the evening). We were so delighted to stumble upon this place and highly recommend it to any local or traveler looking for something special.

Slow service & small portions

By sharpinvestments |

Arrived at 5:30pm on a Friday night. Didn't have a reservation but was seated immediately... because there were about 20 empty tables. The waitress brought us some bread (it was burnt) and gave us the menus...she left and didn't return for 10 minutes. She wanted to know what we wanted to drink...we gave our order and she took off again for 10 minutes... during this time three other tables were seated, given bread, had their drinks brought and orders taken... the waitress finally returns to take our order as the other three tables were already receiving their meals. Another 20 minutes later and our plates arrive... three had Prime Rib and I had the Prime Rib Stroganoff. My food had wonderful flavor... there just wasn't much of it. My friends enjoyed their Prime Rib... but their cuts were very small. We all left feeling like we just didn't get our moneys worth.

A Trip In The Past With Great Prime Rib

By Dealmaker |

As other reviews have stated this is a through back to the 6o's restaurant. The signature prime rib was very good. Cut right from a large cart we ordered rare and medium rare and got what we ordered. The mashed and loaded baked potato was good. The hot fudge ice cream desert was enough for 4 people. If you like prime rib this is the place to go.

Some restaurants win the test of time!

By KelelaAloha |

The outside of this restaurant and the wear and tear on the front door shouldn't dissuade you from going inside. The decor of the main restaurant area is elegant, comfortable and quiet--such a bonus after going to noisy frenetic restaurants. Their $29.00 March dining menu was nicely printed and exactly what was shown on the website. All three courses were excellent and very generous. Our server was Jen who was a tiny bit slow to come to our table, but she's forgiven because the place was full. Her attention to our every need was met from the time she came to us until the very end. I would hope she'd be our server the next time we visit. This restaurant has been here (maybe not the same owners) since I was a young adult--many years ago! Wonderful to see a good restaurant survive all the changes in Portland dining! P.S. to the owner--I'd spring for an impressive new front door that matches the inside dining area.

Used to be a favorite...never again

By Jill Z |

This used to be my favorite place for seriously tender prime rib and cocktails in fabulously old-school ambience. What a horrible disappointment it was tonight. Six of us ordered their prime rib, and all of us found it to be tough and full of gristle. I could not chew my way through about 1/4 of my 9 oz portion. The decor is the same, but the food is no longer acceptable. I am so sad to be saying goodbye to Clyde's after so many years of good meals and great memories, but unless I hear it's got new management, I will never go back.

Prime Rib poorly Cooked

By Jim S |

If you like your Prime Rib raw and cold this is your place! We prefer medium and after 3 returns finally got rare but warm. The roast had not even a quarter inch of done ness on the outside edge which means they did not roast it for anywhere near the time necessary to make a good roast. The place is called the Prime Rib! This was our first and last visit here. The service staff was excellent. The manager asked a few other tables how they liked their meals, but didn't come near us.

1st Time here for us was a good experience

By Frequent D |

We both ordered the 10 oz. prime rib lunch plate that came with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegies. We added a Caesar salad to go with. The prime rib we ordered medium & medium rare which came as ordered & was very good as was the grilled asparagus. The garlic mashed potatoes were ok, but couldn't really taste the garlic and we wouldn't order the Caesar salad again since it had to much of the anchovy flavor for us although if you like anchovies it would be fine. The burgers looked pretty good that some other diners had. We would go back again to try more different offerings. We sat in the lounge which was a little dark, but had a nice fire going to warm up the place nicely. Our waitress was very good and friendly.

Returned to A full house on a Sunday

By dave984MooseJaw |

The negative review, with pictures, seems to be the feature review for this restaurant. But, if this is correct there must be something amiss with the palate of the patrons. Sunday, come six o'clock, or so, there wasn't a seat left in the dining room. Only a few places left in the bar. So, ask yourself, can they all be wrong about the food? We were fortunate to get there before opening at five, and even then there were at least six people waiting in their cars for the place to open. Our party of eight were seated in the convention room, quiet, and private. Service was all that could be asked. The prime rib, from a party member who relishes this dish, was tender and done to specs, with ample portioning. The beef dip, so large that it couldn't be eaten at one sitting. The fish and chips, fish serving, the most sumptuous, i have seen and the review by a picky eater, "excellent'. Stuffed mushrooms, a stand out. The ravioli was enough for two. Of the three prime rib orders, only one had the potential for being slightly under cooked. But, we caught this ahead of time and received exactly what was preferred with not a bump in the flow of service. For a dessert special though, I can't remember what it was called, something "gooey". It's unique and delicious. One serving was enough for a taste for everyone and equally appreciated by all. Our return visit definitely re-affirmed our initial appreciation of what Clyde's has to offer. Easy to find, good food, good value, good service, with the ability to handle a party, And while you are here why not try some of the more unique offerings Clyde's has to offer. Even the fish and chips is something to be admired. So, maybe the decor is a bit "dated". But, again, can all the patrons, a Sunday full house, be wrong about the quality, and value of the food?

Perfect Prime Rib

By rustymalone |

Everything about Clyde's is first class. Atmosphere, service and the prime rib is one of the very best ever. There were four of us and we all had the prime rib. This restaurant has changed owners 4 times we have been visiting it over the last 20 years and there has never been a fall off in service or the quality of the meats they serve.

Best Prime Rib in Portland!

By Scott Failmezger |

We visited on Saturday September 29 before going to the theater. The atmosphere is romantic with the lights dimmed. We both had the prime rib. They bring the chef with is cart to your table and it is sliced right there. The taste, oh it is to die for. Truly a dinner to remember!

The meat and I BOTH aged during our visit!

By J A |

First off the steak (prime rib) is pretty good. Definitely 4 stars. I am taking one off for the L-O-N-G wait. As in reservations for 7pm...seated at 7:10...appetizer, drinks, salads (for 2/3 of our group) came at 7:20...And then we waited...and waited...and waited. No entree until 8:35! So from reservation to entree took over an hour and a half. You could tell the waitstaff was feeling the heat. They were all very nice and apologetic..."The kitchen is ALMOST caught up...thanks for you patience" is what I heard several times. I know what the issue was...we ordered prime rib. The family across aisle from us ordered ribs and were served almost 40 minutes before us. I get it. Prime rib takes a while. But a couple of facts might clue-in the managers that there will be a run on prime rib. 1) It was Father's Day and prime rib was the special and 2) You have the phrase "Prime Rib" in your name! I would have been fine if it had taken a 1/2 to 3/4 hour... It gets busy, but this was excessive. Again, the prime rib was pretty good, but not good enough to drive across town and sit for over an hour and a half waiting for it.

When you need a great beef fix....

By TeamRealMcCoy |

Okay, yea yea, I get it. And we do it. At home, we eat fish and seafood 2-3 times a week, and chicken finds it way into our menu frequently, pork in moderation. But sometimes you just need a great beef fix. That's when you drive to Clyde's! Prime rib is the specialty here, but other great cuts await. The prime rib is available in 8 oz, 10 oz, 12 oz and bigger cuts, and my husband finds his personal nirvana with the 10 oz. And they carve it for him right at the table, cooked to his specs: medium rare. Me? I am deliriously happy with an order of the appetizer prime rib tidbits in au jus with sour cream horseradish, and their perfect Caesar salad (okay, so I do appropriate one-third of my husband's baked potato with the works..butter, sour cream, bacon, chives). Five of us dined here last night and were all very happy, but for one of us who ordered the fish and chips and felt the batter was too heavy. The cocktails were well prepared, the wine selection was great, and the service was pleasant and spot-on. We dined here on a particularly busy night and they pulled it all off with flair (nice job, Tessa). The desserts were lovely, specifically the chocolate pudding cake (share this with someone) and the pumpkin cobbler riddled with caramel and topped with whipped cream (heaven). And if wonderful friends and great food aren't enough, they have live music in the bar (check their website for the musical calendar). We enjoyed the Randy Starr Band last night! A memorable evening in our holiday lineup! Thank you Clyde's!

Good food and great music

By Joanne M |

Looking for a place that felt like the Portland I used to know. I lived her 60 years and now live in Bend. Clyde's Prime Rib did it for me. Great food, good music, and even ran into an old friend. I used to love Portland but it's become too 'trendy' for my taste. We will definitely be back when we visit Portland..which is often. I had the mac-n'-cheese and my husband had the prime rib; both were very tasty.

Old School, But Decent

By KrisM129 |

A throwback to the days of Sammy Davis Junior and Frank Sinatra, this old-fashioned steakhouse delivers the goods. The extensive menu presents moderately priced entrees and a host of classic cocktails. Great service.

Portland Dining Month

By Oangela75 |

The month of March is known as Portland Dining Month with various restaurants offering special menus. My husband & I took my parents to Clyde’s & were not disappointed. The prime rib was excellent as well as the chop salad, baked potato, roasted brussel sprouts, bread, and brownie desert. The place has character- like nothing has been changed ever. They do know how to make prime rib, though. The service was super & the prices reasonable. Believe me, no one left hungry.

It was just okay

By Mary W |

Sure could use some renovation, old and dark. The prime rib was great although they didn't slice it at the table like we read on the advertisement. The salad with the house blue cheese dressing was amazing! The bread was yummy, however the potatoes and veggies were lukewarm. The service was very good. The bar after dinner had a great rhythm and blues band.

1st time great - 2nd time not so much

By jxnmom |

We recently dined at Clyde's for a second time in 4 mos. There were 4 of us and we started with martini's which were excellent! We weren't super hungry, so 2 of us ordered a Caesar salad and shared the prime rib tidbits. Good, but not memorable. Another person ordered the steamer clams which she said were very good. The 4th person ordered the pork chop dinner, and as he said, they looked more like pork "chips" than chops. Very thin, over cooked and dry. A BIG disappointment. We ate in the main dining room and seated across from us was a group of about 8 guys - a little noisy, especially when the waitress showed up and was obviously flirting with them and working for a big tip?! Very distracting. I doubt we'll go back, even though it is within walking distance.

Very good prime rib

By Elaine415 |

The restaurant was very old and kind of smelled musty. No one was in the restaurant eating, that should have told us something. The food was average.

Loved It!

By Dale K |

I'm sure glad I came across this place. I was on my own and was looking for a friendly place with good food. Well this is it. Since I was on my own I sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and personable and she gave great service. I had the prime rib which was great and it was a very large portion. I will certainly be heading back there.

Quite good old time steak house.

Great Prime Rib

By Nancy K |

Visited this restaurant on a Sunday night and was pleasantly surprised to find the 7 ounces Prime Rib special. Mashed potatoes that came with meal had blue cheese and horseradish added to them which made for a pleasant taste. Meat done perfect and atmosphere was cozy. Wait staff attentive without being overly so.

Lucky Find

By Scall1968 |

We stumble upon Clyde's on our way to the Grotto. We had only lived in Portland for four months. We decided to give it a try and our we glad we did. We love the food and the atmosphere. The booths our round with high backs. We always say we are going to try something new, but we can't resist the rib eyes. They are incredible. Sunday nights they have Prime Rib specials. They carve it at your table. It had a old supper club feel to it. I highly recommend.

The price was good

By Tiare P |

the food was good according to the price. THe prime rib is OK, but since it's cheap like $20 its fair...so I've had better ones at other prices, but the price was also steep...so it was great

Very busy this evening

By Carl R |

The three of us ordered a bottle of red wine 23.00, w prime ribs, one crab cake. Stick to the prime rib. They were huge and very well prepared. We also had the French onion soup and the salads. The tab was about 150.00 for the three of us. Very old fashioned, ring-a-ding-ding kinda place. Has a fireplace and also some live music in the back. We had fun

Great Atmosphere

By Kyran |

Somewhat unusual with its Medieval Knight standing at the entrance; this place has fantastic dinner and cocktails. Enjoyed the bar and nightly live music. The décor sets a cool mood and transports you back to better times.

Very Good Prime Rib

By derbyking98 |

The meat was very, very good which is why we went there. The rest of the meal was only fair (eg seasonal vegetable consisted of one small bit of overcooked broccoli). Would probably try this place again on a night with live music just for the sake of the meat. Other members of my group had entrees other than prime rib and those meals were good but not outstanding. Overall didn't walk away with a sense of having gotten great value, decent but not great.

Steak done the old fashioned way.

By Stewart B |

We'd gone by Clyde's a number of time and since we like prime rib, we said we'd have to stop in. Well we finally did, and it was a real pleasure. It is definitely an old-school type steak house, and the decor hasn't changed in decades. However, you can't eat decor and it's the food that counts. It harks back to an age when going out for dinner was a major family event. The Prime Rib portion was generous, and done just as requested from the rolling cart. Service was fast and friendly; in fact our server, Ananda, was one of the highlights of the visit. She was attentive, (but not overly attentive), funny and helpful. Her dessert suggestion was right on the mark and we loved the signature Deep Fried Cheesecake. We are looking forward to our next trip back to Clyde's, because the Prime Rib and the experience was first rate!

50's decor & Amazing Steak

By Lisa B |

Dinner Celebration and the Steaks were the Star of the show! Great food at great prices in a lovely atmosphere.

Delicious and worth the price!

By Kevin F |

My wife and I went here and we were not disappointed. The prime rib was tender and tasty. We opted for the wedge salad on the side and it was a good size portion as well as delicious. I got the burger and it was just as tasty. It is a little more pricy than a typical restaurant but if you are looking for quality food with a cool ambiance this is your place.

Prime Rib

By AJ S |

Good steak. Wonderful cocktails Super service. Nice live band. Crowded in lounge; no seating on Sat evening. Fining room was good and you could hear the band.

Nice atmosphere, food, and service

By Stephanie Z |

My date and I chose Clyde's because it was the most mentioned restaurant online when searching for " Prime Rib." We were a little weary because the parking lot was empty, but it was early evening still... so, we walked in and found a friendly staff and a charming atmosphere with dimly lit chandeliers and sconces and an old-fashioned feel. We were pleased with the look and feel of the restaurant and really enjoyed our evening. I ordered the 6 oz w/ house mashed potatoes and he ordered the 12 oz w/ baked potato. The food was delicious! The staff, again, was friendly and charming. There's a contrast from the more professional service you'll find at El Gaucho, which isn't a criticism- but worth mentioning. There's also a contrast between the clientele you'll find at either restaurant, so- if you're looking for fancy, choose El Gaucho. Since I was on a date, we were talkative and affectionate and the few other tables had older, quieter couples that seemed a little annoyed with us. We had a great time though! Bottom line, If you're looking for delicious food that is affordable and comes with charming service, then try Clyde's... and dress casual. The prime rib is delicious!

Nostalgic throwback steakhouse

By TTSF23 |

I love these kinda places but it was just so-so. It was a Monday night but there was only 1 other couple in the dining room. There were more people in the lounge for drinks and music. Ordered the 16 oz prime rib, boneless. Seasoned on the outside fairly well but I was really hoping it would've been more tender. A little tough in some areas. Service was just ok even though there was only 1 other table. The server was polite but didn't check on me once and only took my order, delivered my food and then gave me my check. Maybe it was because it was an off night but I was a little disappointed overall.

Back to the 50s

By C B |

Wow. What an experience. Expected to see Frank Sinatra singing. However, we went during restaurant month and enjoyed it immensely. We both had halibut; sorry we are just not steak people; it was delicious. The service was amazing. We will definitely go back if we have visitors who want to get prime rib and or a fish entrée.

Average prime rib

By Levon M |

Four of us for dinner on what was a slow night. It was maybe half full, Service was fairly quick & the staff was friendly. The prime rib was just average. Nothing special. I have had a lot better at cheaper prices.

Excellent Prime Rib and service

By SnorkleNut |

We arrived late in the area of the Portland airport and began a search for a spot for dinner. Finding nothing exciting in the area of the airport, we headed to Sandy Blvd. I had read some reviews about Clyde's Prime Rib. Finding it, we decided to give it and try and are very glad we did. Because of other reviews, we ordered the prime rib. Even though I had the smallest cut, it was more than sufficient. The prime rib was perfectly prepared and rivaled many that we've enjoyed in other restaurants. Our hostess had a great sense of humor even at the late hour. Our waitress was very attentive and the wine she recommended was perfect. Our dinner did not ruin our travel budget. The down side was that the baked potato had been under the heat lamp too long. One of our party ordered the garlic mashed potatoes and the rest of us wished we had done the same. I'm certain that had we told our waitress, she would have exchanged for us. Yes, the decor is dated but the restaurant is very clean, comfortable, and well staffed even late in the evening. For us the red plush circular booths created a mood of times past. Yes, we will return to Clyde's the next time we stay in that area of Portland.

Disappointing

By Amy C |

We visited Clydes based on the review and the emphasis on Prime Rib in their advertisement. Our server was excellent. Calamari was very average. Prime Rib was super disappointing. Asparagus was overcooked, soggy and poor quality. No reason to return.

Stepping back in time for great food and vibes

By rose lambie |

Such fun energy and good food! I felt like I was walking into a place where whoever the local equivalent to Frank Sinatra should be hanging out, or a private investigator, swanky energy and that prime rib is no joke! Go with the baked potato and creamed spinach for classic vibes. So good!

Old school prime rib place

Reviews gave this place high ratings, we were not as fortunate. Everything was sub standard, food and service.

Disappointing Dining Experience

By slc690 |

My husband and I went to sample their Prix Fixe menu. Love the concept of the place -- the dark, old-school supper club concept. Unfortunately, that's about all there was to like. Upon entering, the hostess really did not greet us - no welcome, just "we don't have any tables, but you can sit in the bar" and then changed her mind and found there was a table (and, by the way-- I realize this Portland and we're all about diversity and all that, but... the hostess' 'goth' presentation did not fit in with the 'old Vegas' ambiance of the restaurant -- it was a bit off-putting). The waitress quickly (too quickly) took our order, then came back and let me know my chosen dessert was not available and told me what the substitute would be. I was a little confused about why it was sold out, since it was only 5:30 PM. I ordered the salmon, my husband (more wise than I) ordered the prime rib. My rice was not done - very raw - and the salmon was overcooked. His prime rib was better, but still not worth the price. I guess I expected much more -- better ambiance (it was overly dark, no music, rushed and cramped), better service (did not feel welcomed or wanted -- much more like I was a bother to them), and much better food (when I choose to go out to dinner, I want to feel that it's better than what I can make myself - this definitely was not better). Overall, a highly disappointing dining experience.

quick lunch stop

By LoriChristal |

I ordered the clam chowder and was so satisfied with it chock full of clams, nice and thick. It came with toasted bread that was perfect for dipping. I often order chowder and this was as good as anywhere on the coast. My son and his wife went for dinner last week & ordered the rib eye & lobster. They loved it. I live a good neighborhood eatery. Cheers to Clyde’s Prime Rib. They also have live music on weekends with a full bar. Need I say more?

Mouth watering Prime Rib♥️

By African Travel and More🥰❤ |

I had the primb rib with soup and salad and it was to die for! The primb rib was so juicy, well seasoned and mouthwatering I feel like catching a flight weekly to Clyde's ♥️ The next great value is live band and dance floor to dance off the great food. The was no cover charge for the band and the bartender made delicious concoctions. I highly recommend Clyde's it's a local neighborhood spot with great service.

Old School in the Best Way

By SeptemberSassy |

My bff and I meet up at least once a month for dinner. We try a new place each time. I found Clyde's on a 'places every Portlander must try' list. This is an old school place with a decor straight out of the 1960s (think 1890 meets the Rat Pack). The menu is full of old school favorites too. I had the steak wedge salad and my friend had the French dip. Everything was perfect. We moved from the dining room into the bar after dinner and weren't disappointed. This is throwback in all the best ways. Service, food, drinks were spot on.

Stranger's suggestion pays off

By lucsimsthomas |

So what do you do when you are riding in the open air top level of a Hop On Hop Off bus and someone pulls up beside the bus and yells at you that you need to go to Clyde's? You go to Clyde's!! We were looking for a place to have dinner anyway, and this seemed like a very strange coincidence. We went to Clyde's on a weekday and after finally finding it, we could not find a parking space. At least this was a good sign -- it's popular. We finally parked behind the restaurant and asked if this was okay and someone from the staff said yes. We didn't wait long to be seated and the staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had. The food was plentiful and delicious. The retro vibe was great. My husband and I were both happy with our food. We only wished we could have stayed for the music that everyone was bragging about. But, alas, we had a long drive back to where we were staying. I don't know who the guy was that directed us here but, thanks bro!!

We sat at the bar for Happy Hour. Our bartender was a fun girl who made strong drinks and kept us laughing. We also tried some small bites - delicious!

Yummy prime rib, great salmon too

By shewholovestoeat |

Another dining month adventure. This time to a long time Portland restaurant. This is one of the best values on dining month. Choice of poke, or chopped salad to start. Love the poke here, and the chop salad has a nice dressing. Round 2 was prime rib, cooked perfectly and grilled salmon. Nicely cooked, moist and flavorful. Dessert was cheesecake with a raspberry sauce or chocolate cobbler. Both tasty. Our waiter Tyler was super. He was busy, but managed all the tables with aplomb. Kudos! Great service. One bonus, Clyde's has live music, so after you eat you can dance.

Excellant meal

decor a little dated, but the food was outstanding. I am a rancher and had the rib steak, it was excellant

Just OK

By Tony S |

We stopped at Clyde's after a recommendation from friends. Perhaps they have not been there in a while. The grilled bacon salad is rather over the top. A huge hunk of romaine that is actually grilled with the bacon on it and then dressing added, Except for its size there was not really anything distinctive about the salad. My wife and I both ordered the prime rib. I had an end cut and she a normal cut. Neither peace was very tender and the end cut which is usually more well done was dry. There are some terrific Prime Rib places in Portland. This one did not measure up to our standards.

Old School Excellence

By Bill B |

Have been wanting to go to this restaurant for 30 years. For some reason, never had. On my birthday this year I said "it's time". Had a fantastic meal (mine was prime rib, of course, my wife LOVED her halibut). The service was great, the ambiance is very unique and the prices were reasonable. Will be back soon.

Treat yourself to an excellent meal

Clyde's Prime Rib Restaurant and Bar is outstanding in every way. Our server, Jessie was fantastic. She was friendly, knowledgeable, honest and helpful about our food choices. We had seven people in our party. Three of us ordered the prime rib, two ordered the rib eye, one fillet and one ordered of the crab cakes. Everything was prepared perfectly and was delicious. We will definitely return to Clyde’s and when we do, we’ll request Jessie to be our server.

Lives up to the name

Went there with a group of seven. We ordered chicken and prime rib. Everybody loved the food and sides. Service was excellent. We were in a quiet room away from the live band. Place looked very popular. I'd go back again.

Super service and good food with a local vibe

By AJ S |

Dropped in for dinner. Seth was our server and he did a great job. Steak was great. Love how prime rib was prepared. I chose prime rib bites and creamed spinach. The portions were generous. My friend chose ribs. We both left with lots of containers. We splurged for dessert. The key lime pie was delightful. Cheesecake was creamy and delicious. Live music on Friday nights was a nice touch. Got to check in on blazer game during dinner and listen to good music after dinner. Adequate parking. Seating was tight on Friday night due to size of the crowd. It a local spot that I enjoy. Menu has ribs, beef, chicken and seafood; lots of variety. Get there early on the weekend evenings cause people come out to enjoy themselves. I really like to support local vendors cause the money stays in the community. Seth was busy but on point. He got us what we needed and took good care of us. Cocktails were tasty! I thought there was good price value for the food and drinks that we got. Full bar has lots of variety. I was excited to see that the bar carries "Uncle Nearest"!

Portland, OR is known for it's creative (odd) menus. If you are looking for an excellent traditional dinner of outstanding prime rib, a loaded potato and a variety of delicious salads this is the place! The menu also includes lobster tail, ribs, pastas, beef stroganoff as well as hamburgers and lighter fares. The dining room has the atmosphere of an old English drawing room or library. The lounge has live music on Saturday nights. Excellent place for dinner!

Prime Rib with Blues

By Bill R |

Took advantage of Portland Dining month to visit Clyde's with friends. Upon arrival we were pleased to find the restaurant had a parking lot. We enjoyed our meal with a bottle of wine. While we dined we heard live blues begin in the bar. We will come back.

just say no to overpriced steakhouses, and head to Clydes!

By rcftommay |

We have visited the Prime Rib many times over the years, but had not been back for awhile until last nights dinner. We hosted it at Clyde's for one of my stepson's birthday, and a party of six joined us. Let me start off by saying that like all restaurants, the experience at Clyde's has gone up and down over the years; but last night was really great. We brought our own wine and were prepared to pay the corkage fee, but I don't think we were actually charged one. We ordered three appetizers for the party of six; all were excellent, expecially the stuffed mushrooms. I don't think I have ever had anything quite like them before; baked in a puff pastry shell, just delicious. You will immediately notice on the menu that the steaks are extremely reasonably priced, particularly compared with the national chains. I had the black and bleu steak; a blackened sirloin with bleu cheese. It was prepared perfectly and was so tender! Most of the rest of the party had prime ribs of varying sizes, and all were pleased by their selections. They were carved to order at our table from the Prime Rib cart, by Carlos. The house salad, with the proprietary blue cheese/horseradish dressing, was a superb prelude to the steak. The service has always been good at Clyde's, and last night was no exception. Our waitress was smiling and happy to have us there. The decor, as has been mentioned elsewhere, is retro 60's; dark wood, leather booths, nice fireplace; we could have been at Johnny's Steakhouse in Omaha, circa 1969. Overall, a great meal and a fine experience. The bill at the end will be a pleasent shock to those used to the ala carte, high dollar steak houses.

Nostalgic

By Bob K |

That has many meanings-as in a neat old place with dark atmosphere, velvety booths, and some interesting paintings on the wall. You can tell by visiting that at one time this place was the place to be and is amusing, to a point. The food was good, as I had gumbo (it was Fat Tuesday) and of course, the prime rib served from the roll out cart as in Vegas. it had nice flavor and was a nice cut. However, you can also say that this place is dated and in need of some TLC. It truly is an experience especially for a traveler like me.

This is an old world very classy 60's dining room with old world classy service. The food is great, good value.

Step Back in Time, Steak House.... Almost?

By Mike W |

Well.... This review is going to be all over the board. We chose this place because it appeared to serve up a Retro Steak House experience. We were about 75% convinced of it's retro appeal by the end of dinner. Old school/Old English dining motif...? Coat of Armour and a blaring fire pit... Kinda Haunted House meets Dante's Inferno. ;-) It's a little kitschy, but a little disjointed feeling. Large Lounge area and smaller dining area. All looks and feels dated.. More dated, than Retro. As the fire pit blasted heat towards us, I thought maybe we'd be on the dinner menu..! Hostess didn't fit the Retro feel, she fit more of the Portland feel... Dressed down and eclectic. We were placed in a nice big leather booth with linen tablecloth. We sat facing a makeshift fireplace... modern looking. Beyond seemed to be a banquet room? Server quickly appeared and took our drink orders. Once again, a disjointed look for our server... She was very nice and had a great personality, but fit the Portland look... Tattoos with a dark servers outfit. Looking more Goth, than retro steakhouse. This kinda started to add entertainment to visit.. the disjointed feel was more like an odd attraction. Drinks seems to take quite a while to appear. We had talked and studied the menu a few times, before the drinks came. Placed our orders and continued talking... Looking around the room, you couldn't help but soak in the kitschy knickknacks in the decor. A large old school Chrome Blimp Prime Rib server sat lonely and maybe unused in a cubby in the corner. I was hoping it would be pulled out and brought into the kitchen, then loaded with huge pieces of meat to serve the masses.... but it stayed in the corner for the entire evening and no one was served from such a beautiful old school devise. What a shame... As we waited, I started noticing, everybody waiting... No one was eating. Hmmmm? Server came by a few times, apologizing for the delay and offering more drinks... Finally... Like someone rang a dinner bell... Food started pouring out of the kitchen to everyone... Odd. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal. From Rib Eye to Ribs to Prime Rib. All was cooked properly to order and tasty. All in all, it was an odd visual experience with very good food.

Tasty place to eat!

By Richard M |

Went there with reservations in place, no wait at all...promptly seated. Service was excellent!! No rush between courses - we had plenty of time for conversation amongst us. The food was fantastic...I had the beef stroganoff: very good sauce used, with a great taste, the noodles were perfect; and the best part, they use prime rib for the beef...wonderfull!! One of our party didn't particularly like her soup, the server took it off the bill even though her husband tried it, liked it, and ate it. And if you like clams, the Steamer Clams make for a very good starter. This is a gem in NE Portland!

I wish I never saw their sign

By Denelle K |

This place is a trip. The old dark dining room reminds me of the haunted house at Disneyland. It has a cold and dreary atmosphere. And it was cold inside, something I never like. The service was fine. The tempura stuffed mushrooms were served hot and they were good, although I could not find the seafood in them. It went down hill from there. This was the strangest prime rib I have ever had. It had it's front end cut off of it, like that part was bad or something. It was barely warm, and I don't even think they cooked on the day they served it. I ordered it rare, which it was, but it just looked so strange. It had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Perhaps the other dinners were better, but I was dining alone and did not sample any other entrees. Beware, something is not right here.

Just because you cook steak doesn't mean you are a steakhouse!

By Googlegyrl503 |

I have been eating here for years... This is supposed to be a steakhouse. I took out my time to dress decent to go to a steakhouse and my server has on jeans, visible tattoos on both arms wearing a short sleeve top. One of the so-called hostesses spent a lot of time twerking to the band and that's fine but do it away from where I'm eating in your Steakhouse with my man. Even he commented I've never seen a hostess in a skin-tight pink mini dress at a steakhouse.... I ordered my steak medium and it wasn't cooked medium. Never do I send my food back. The food took forever to come, we watched another couple get served before us even though they arrived after us, we basically got full on bread and liquids before our food came. The chowder was a great add on and full of flavor. The loaded baked potato was boring and looked like it was thrown together. The restaurant side of this place should not be called a steakhouse. I won't be eating at Clyde's anymore. Every bit of Portland culture is dying away and I guess this also. They charge Steakhouse prices but I've have better service and sides at chain restaurants. After dinner we went to the bar side to check out the Kirk green band. I've also heard him many times before... This night sounded like his band was thrown together... I will say Uncle Reo did a cameo and rocked the house. He needs a night of his own.

Good Prime Rib

By Tim P |

Treated Sister In Law and husband to dinner at Clyde's for their anniversary on a recent trip to Portland. Had been there once before but didn't take time to review it. All four of us decided on the Monday Night Special, a 7 oz prime rib with potato and another side. All ordered medium rare and although the prime rib was more rare than medium rare the flavor was excellent if a little chewy. With drinks and dinner the bill came to $92.00 which I considered a fair price. Service was very good and unlike a previous reviewer we found the decor very pleasant if a little dark. All in all a very nice ending to our vacation to Oregon.

We love Clyde's

By Econoclast |

I like blood rare; my wife likes medium. Both cuts off the same hunk were perfect: juicy, hot and tasty. The jus and the horseradish just fine. The potato tasty, the salad side fine. The broccoli is garnish. Who cares? It's called "Clyde's Prime Rib"! Service excellent and engaging. I don't understand the negative reviews. Clyde has the manner, personality, talent, and attention to detail that produces success. Each time we've eaten there the result is the same excellence at 2/3 the price of a favorite for 40 years, Ringside. And the place can give Chicago's Lawry's a run for its money. Old drapes? What's the problem, they're clean and they add to a period atmosphere that's dying. Enjoy! And the Sunday jam session is first-rate.

They ignored us

By Susan A |

When we arrived, a sign said to seat ourselves in the lounge, and the dining room was empty - at 8pm. A bit confused, we went ahead into the lounge, but an employee stopped us before we sat down and said that table was for someone else. So we sat down nearby, still confused. No one told us anything. After a few minutes we left. So we can't judge the food, but the service was awful!

Excellent beef

By Greg V |

In Portland for training. Wife and I decided to drive out on Sandy Bl to see what we found. We had been to Stamford's (nothing wrong but nothing great, either) the night before. Saw Clyde's and decided to stop (My two weaknesses are halibut and prime rib). WISE DECISION! I got prime rib and my wife got a filet. Both were to die for, especially the accompanying braised asparagus! Appearance and food resembled a classic 1950-1960 steak/chop house==red leather booths, dark paneling

Great ‘old school’ prime rib restaurant.

By Nomad_LA |

Stopped in for a late lunch on a rainy Friday and had great Prime rib. Most of the lunch crowd were in the cozy bar, so we opted for the dining room that was almost empty. Service was better than fine. Our waiter was personable and prompt. We both had the prime rib dinner and it was perfect. Most of the steakhouse’s in Portland charged much more, so although this wasn’t in the category of ‘cheap eats’, it was much better than the places in downtown. The menu had many choices besides the prime rib and I look forward to coming back to give them a try on our next visit to Portland.

Hot Jazz, Great Food, Best Managed

By Merathaim |

On a cold, rainy, evening we drove by Clyde's and almost didn't stop in because the exterior is old-school roadhouse looking... but the parking lot was filled and it was still early evening. We are so glad we stopped... Clyde welcomed us in, took our wet coats and showed us to a bar booth near the giant fireplace. Our cocktails arrived and we were promptly seated at a luxe booth in dining room. This is perhaps the best run restaurant in Portland, the wait staff knew knew what they were doing, the chefs turn out consistently savory food, and on and on. Before we finished our meal a Jazz combo started playing in the bar area... a nice touch to have live, mellow, music. The decor is totally 1940s, lots of red, crystal chandeliers, rich carpeting. We ordered roast prime rib from the trolley, carved at our table. Our guest ordered the lobster an proclaimed it delicious. Try it, you'll like it.

Prime Plus Music With a Choice of a bar or more formal with Chandeliers

By dave984MooseJaw |

As you will see with other reviews, the Sunday prime rib ranks around the best you can have anywhere. It's tender and juicy. The baked potato is excellent. Portioning, on the vegetable side, ornamental, the meat we chose a nine ounce prime, which is enough for two. Service attentive, friendly. Our purpose for this visit was dancing. There is a different band every night, Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday jam. The music starts at eight thirty, Sunday, and goes till late. It starts with jazz selections that are more to the jazz aficionado taste, but, very suitable for creating a good listening atmosphere for an evening meal. Later in the evening the tempo steps up for dancing. Getting to Clyde's early can be advisable; later, after the music starts seating is at a premium with standing room only on some Sunday nights. Saturday night was a packed night for what was called Rhythm and Blues, R&B, but, I think this was more Rap than anything else. So, this place has options, not formal, but a good place to follow other's example, and bring your date. The music is live and worth a try. And for the younger set, there are burgers, with a Clyde's twist.

wow amazing

By mardi c |

I missed the happy hour, and once I saw that menu I thought / dang I would be here every day. I had prime rib cuts with horseradish. the creamed spinach was killer with a wonderful bread. shrimp louis, and more. Great food, great drinks, busy bustling atmosphere, and some live music to boot. Whats not to like?

A solid, reasonably priced choice for beef lovers

By Joe C |

Tried this local legend for the first time this evening.I have been searching for a place where I can get nice piece of prime rib or a good steak without spending a paycheck on the meal.Portland has a lot of good restaurants where I can fulfill my desire, but they are quite costly and a visit has to be saved for a special occasion. Luckily for me, I discovered Clyde's this evening. Clyde's is like taking a journey back in time! It brings back childhood memories of visits to similar restaurants in San Francisco. The fare here basic and simple which is what your looking for when you desire prime rib. Their price point for the various portion sizes of prime rib is at least $10 to $12 dollars less than the other spots in town. Another major difference between Clyde's and some of the other places is that their prime rib is trimmed of much of the fat. This is not true of their competitors! Bottom line is that the 12oz portion here more meat and less fat. As far as the rest of the menu goes, there are several options for those who don't desire prime rib. On this visit, my dining companions had one of the specials, which was a NY steak with a cognac peppercorn sauce. This dish was fantastic. The other diner had Baby back ribs that were just ok. They have a full bar and a very limited wine list which offers reasonably price glass pours. The list, although small had some nice choices. We opted for a Jordan Cabernet which was priced well at $59.00. The cocktail pricing was far less than you would pay in the downtown or northwest Portland areas. For example, a Stoli tonic was $6.00 The service here is friendly and casual. The staff is very knowledgable about the menu and help you make the correct choices. For example they discuss portion sizes and discourage you and or guide you if they feel your ordering too much food. Our servers' name was Sierra, and she was delightful!

Good prime rib in Portland

By AnnElizabeth97123 |

This place is an old school steak restaurant. The red half circle booths, chandeliers, dark wood paneling and art remind me of nice restaurants when I was young. We started with French onion soup and Caesar salad followed by prime rib. Generous portions. The smallest cut of prime rib is 10 oz.

Unpleasant Food Quality

By Kakalahale |

On 4/24/14 I ate at Clyde's: Prime rib sandwich. Excellent service and well-prepared but ultimately inferior food. The problem is the food's poor quality. The bread roll was quite good but the meat in the sandwich was sparse and tasteless; my guess is it was old, perhaps repeatedly thawed and refrozen; it left an unpleasant after taste. The accompanying au jus was weakly flavored. The fries were of poor quality, and although the cooks prepared them well, they, too, were tasteless. I ate only a few bites of my lunch and left the rest. Even the coffee, which was freshly brewed, was bitter. Good service and good cooks cannot overcome inferior ingredients. Those ordering and maintaining the food quality at Clyde's need to change drastically (ala Gordon Ramsay) or find other lines of work.

Underwhelmed

By Nicole B |

I normally give restaurants the benefit of the doubt. I should have listened to the reviews on this one. The broccoli was horrible. Burnt on the edges, and completely dry. My prime rib came out medium when I requested medium rare. Many people had their vegetables pushed away from them so I don't think it was just ours.

Well....

By Mike A |

Old meets new! The place that time stopped in the 1970's? Service was slow no AC red velour and 70'/ Vegas booths. Food quality was good but wow.

Poor Prime Rib Sandwhich

By CatchnRelease1 |

The four of us went there on a Saturday night around 6:00. Two of us had the prime rib sandwich. It turned out to be the small cuttings off of a prime rib, I believe and it was awful. Dry, burnt and greasy at the same time. The salad and onion soup were great but my advice is to stay away from that sandwich. It was also small in size. The fries that came with it were limp as well. I'm hoping the steaks and prime rib are better but we won't be back.

Great fried chicken

By Laura G |

My son brought me here when I was visiting from out of state to have dinner. We sat on the bar side when we found there was going to be live music. The bartender waited on us and he was very friendly and attentive to us. I had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes and it was delicious. It was a quiet night so we stayed a little longer and listened to the band.

Historic prime rib house. Wonderful.

Amazing restaurant which was born in 1955. Quality steaks and prime rib. Loved the sirloin cob salad. Great ambience and service. Excellent.

Great for Families

By spcoggs |

We literally stumbled across Clyde's when looking for a spot for dinner for our family of 8 traveling the PNW together. We were well into our trip, but our first night in Portland. Steak had been mentioned. A quick search found this restaurant not too far from our hotel. When we walked in, we expected a wait for a table for 8. Instead, we were shocked to be seated immediately! The staff was super friendly and welcoming. The food was equally delicious. We had a wonderful dinner and would highly recommend.

A fun experience but lacks flavor

By Jenn C |

The neclectic atmosphere is a fun experience. Overall the staff was accomdating on a busy night. Wish the music had start earlier to be able to enjoy it (starts between 8:30 and 9:00). We had drinks, appetizers and entrees. Everything was okay not great. The food lacked some flavor that would have made this an amazing experience. Highlights were the fresh bread and butter and prime rib and wedge salad (great price).

How a building from Portland's darkest historical past is transformed into an excellent steak house for all!

By Milestogo007 |

I came here for lunch and was absolutely blown away by how good the food was. I ordered the Prime Rib with french fries and the mixed vegetables. I also had ordered some clam chowder before the main meal was served. The clam chowder was excellent and there was two large pieces of bread that tasted so fresh and good which I dunked into the chowder. Fantastic! I then got my Prime rib with fries and vegetables and I must say the french fries were seasoned and tasted fantastic, the vegetables had been like char broiled and cooked so they were tender and flavorful. It was mixture of broccoli and cauliflower that was excellent. I saved the Prime rib for last and it was excellent. They give you some horseradish sauce with some kick to it and also au jus. Both were very complimentary to the Prime Rib. I was so full after eating all that I declined dessert but I am sure it would have been a good one. I ate in the lounge area which is so dark you can barely see until your eyes adjust to the darkness. The Dining area is well lit with two giant chandeliers hanging over these magnificent looking red leather booths. There appeared to be a painting of Napoleon up on the wall. That made me laugh. The building is historic for its dark past, it use to be where Coon's Chicken was in Portland back in the day of explicit racism. If you ever get to see the comedy movie "Ghost World", this disgraceful piece of American History is focused on in the film. I am glad that has been done away with and now Clyde's Prime Rib is giving all people the chance to go out and get an excellent steak for lunch or dinner. The service was excellent, the bathroom was clean, and I highly recommend eating here at Clyde's Prime Rib.

Great classic prime rib

By SGTL |

We finally made it here after wanting to come here for a couple years. We sat in the lounge so we didn’t have to make a reservation. It was nice and dark and had an old school vibe. Strong drinks. I ordered the French onion soup to start and the small prime rib with baked potato. Unfortunately the soup came out with my entree and I knew my prime rib would get cold by the time I got done eating it so I had to pass on that but they took it off the bill with no issues. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and the au jus was so flavorful. The crust on the outside was perfect and I liked the extra fat on the edges. The baked potato was a little dry but still good. Service was okay. I would come back so I can try the French onion soup.

Delicious steaks!

By Michele B |

We came here to celebrate our 33rd anniversary. My son had taken us here on a whim because it was close to his house and he had never been there. Well, it was completely empty when we arrived for an early dinner at 5:30pm. The waitress was friendly and offered us some bread. I had the country fried steak because the description itself in the menu was mouth watering. I ate every bit of this thinly pounded rib eye steak which was lightly battered and covered with brown gravy, mash potatoes, and steam veggies surrounded this onolicious meal! My husband had the prime rib which was cooked just right and tasted great as well! I would definitely recommend this to hearty eaters!

A step back in time

By msstenny |

We ate here on a Sunday night and had very good food and excellent service. We all had the signature Prime Rib and was done to our liking. The portions were good and very little fat on our meat which made us all happy. The restaurant is like stepping into a time warp to the 40s or 50s. it is dark with deep red leather and velvet booths, chandeliers, dark woods. The place was just starting to fill up when we left, but we had gotten there early.

Ribeye Steak

By golfnut71952 |

A very highly rated restaurant, and with the title I suppose I should have ordered the prime rib, but I hoped they knew how to cook red meat. I was a bit disappointed. I ordered medium rare and it came medium. All the veggies, mushrooms and onions were fantastic. Maybe the best accompaniments I have ever had, but the ribeye was pretty flavorless. I had grilled ribeye from the local Safeway 2 nights earlier, which was much more flavorful. So, for $44.00 I would never order this again. Not sure I would return in spite of the many good ratings this restaurant gets.

A REMODEL IS LONG, LONG OVERDUE!

By Ken440 |

When we entered the dining room, it was like taking a step back in time....to around the 1950's. I recall when this place used to "Sparkle"...now, alas, that "sparkle" has been replaced with ancient serving pieces, dirty velvet drapes and wall paper, and food which tastes almost as old as the decor! The food: Not good. Our steaks were of a cheap cut and served luke-warm. Our vegetables were undercooked and had far-too-much seasoning...to the point of being briny, while the potatoes had more lumps than a cheap mattress. Why anyone would wish to eat in this place is beyond me...especially when there are countless Steak Houses which serve decent food in a clean and pleasant atmosphere.

Best Prime Rib in Portland

By Pat R |

Don't be fooled by the "less than excellent" rating. It's only because I really don't like dark and old atmospheres, which this is. However, the food is excellent. My husband and I go there at least once a month on a Sunday to have their Prime Rib. We found Clyde's by chance while looking for a good prime rib restaurant and sooooooo glad we did. They have the best prime rib we have been able to find. The wait staff are friendly, especially our favorite, Becca. They are also very helpful and courteous. Occasionally you will find Clyde wandering around and checking with the patrons to make sure everything is as expected. Don't pass up this place if you are a meat lover, it's the BEST.

No single people allowed

By buddyrandolf |

Warning to single people, you have to eat in the bar. I was turned away from the dining room, because I was solo. The bar was packed and noisy. I don't like eating in bars anyway. Sayler's was kind and sat me int he dining room. Hostess was not willing to help. felt discriminated against as I was single. Apparently their dining room is reserved for more people = more money. Won't EVER come back, but then again I don't suppose it matters as I am only 1 person. Make more money off a crowd. Well I won't bring a crowd ever either. I'm a business owner too and we often put customers first. Might heed the message. Oh and you should have a sign, no shirt, no shoes, solo, no service!

ARE YOU KKDDING ME

Ok this place is a candidate for kitchen nightmare but I’ll call it customer nightmare ok I’m gonna cut to the chase this started from the ordering food we asked if the fried chicken dinner could be modified Answer NO then waiter was asked to ask the cook he reluctantly said ok and was also asked to switch fries instead of the hard luke warm mashed potatoes that ended up on the plate oh yeah he just brought the order and said that they prepackage there dinners and there could be no changes in chicken pieces and he forgot the fries which he promptly fixed. the appetizer was calamari which prolly was cooked properly but served cold to luke warm what a shame NOW For My Personal nightmare In Rancid microwaved over cooked old food my first order was the wonderful sounding Prime Rib Beef Stroganoff but somewhere the wonderful got lost or ran away in preparation lolol here what I got it look good but far from it had linguini noodles bathed in a watery beef bouillon tasting sauce with a sour cream splashed on top and the prime rib cubes tasted old, frozen and re-microwaved and served to me all I can say is YUCK and this was the waiter choice as well shoulda known….So I sent it back the next wonderfully rancid thing I ordered was something off they special ribs menu .it was called riblets after another 20 minute wait out pop a decent look serving of ribs I said LOOKED ….they were cold-warm but ok I went for it anyway they were tender meat pulled right off but then I was smacked with a pungent smell like a not clean fish market LOLOL Really I though ….. I tried it and Arrrrg Yuck again I quickly smelled the meat and yes it was the meat and it had had a rotting fishy smoky smell lolol shock I thought it was me and had 3 there people smellin the rib all agreed Eewo I then asked the waiter to have a wiff he said smells fine REALLY then he added that he had just eaten some ick ….. so very disappointed someone at the table felt sorry for this place and said just keep it if ya can fix it at home give it to your dogs hmmm rotten ribs my dogs would bit you trying to give then rotten food lolololo so we kept the 15 dollar old rancid ribs ok now by this time anyone else said forget it but not me desperate to find something edible and the the fact that I usta like this place I though this was just a fluke I ordered again Halibut and fries after another long wait OMG don’t you know it [ -- ] also this is un heard of it had a gr8 beer batter but it was re heated it tasted and felt like it was wrapped fish in a pancake and WoW almost done fries as well but hey the fries were hot.. ok now at this point I’m were all not happy so hey I order a drink can mess that up right.. so I order shot of Cuervo Gold and a beer and don’t you know this fool brought me a silver tequila bar pour and when I pointed it out he told me it was Cuervo gold I put a white napkin behind the glass and said it was not and he told me it was and walk away without offer me other options A R E U Kidding me so I calmly went to the very nice bartenders Codi and Cherylnn with my complaint I think Codi explained that they didn’t carry Curevo products and she let me sample the bar brand and I explained that it tasted like a off brand Paton she agreed and quickly suggested another brand and made me a new one all this while our clueless slow and slightly rude waiter was not around I finally had enough and pull him to the side and explained the situations (TEACHING MOMENT )while was admitting fault and offered to rectify the by buying me a drink of my choice which he never didn’t take off the dang bill Now all this and there was one more thing well two first my sister ordered a reg drink vodka and orange $5.75 no prob right we she ordered the same drink $6.75 so of course I ask the waiter and he replied that he does it (Clyde the owner) one of his rules that after 9:30 his drinks go up and that’s it lolololo Are you kidding What the heck Whew So after this dinner from hadies I had enough I when to the owner (Clyde) Now this was a trip after very professionally explained to him of our experience and I also added that he should post his happy hour times if that’s what it was he told me that he has been doing this for many years and everyone already knows about this price change and I quickly told him what about the folks that this was there first time just not regulars he in a very condescending way said he would take it under consideration No apologies for the rotten food bad service and overall terrible experience my party was having you would think that all those years woulda taught him how it be a good Owner have good quality food and respect paying customers and pay we did NEVER AGAIN Oh Did I say that the music was good lolol overall I Give this place The FINGER like they did us and this a visit from the Health Inspector probably be in order it usta to be wayyyyy better

Went here years ago when it was 1st class, white linen place with table side carving. Not the same anymore. The food was not good. Lobster came without the butter. Tiny bit of salad dressing on side. Too expensive for the experience I recieved.

Good Old Fashioned Prime Rib

By HummerBob |

A step back into the days of good old fashioned prime rib houses. Dark wood and plush, comfortable booths create a great atmosphere. Tasty appetizers and excellent prime rib cut right at your table, plus lots of good sides. Friendly and prompt service. We returned again in the same week.

A Time Back in Time

Eating at Clyde's is an experience - more than a meal. It's like you're in Portland, but you're not. The restaurant, yup - there are no windows, is a time capsule kind-of-place that feels more like a midwestern supper club than a Portland steakhouse. Add to the surreal mix - the lounge becomes a disco dancehall later in the evenings, complete with live music. We went as a group celebrating the upcoming birth of a friends baby. It was meant to be a "man shower" so we went all-in and decided to eat at an old-timey steakhouse. It was a good move. From the moment we walked in, there was a kind of excitement for the place. It is different. And, as one of our table mates pointed out "Clyde's is not a Portland hipster restaurant by any stretch of the imagination . . . and that's a really good thing." With all of that said, Clyde's is struggling in some areas. As for the food - it was good. The salads were fresh and the steaks well-prepared and well grilled. It's good meat - but not great. The wine list is not what you'd expect at a steakhouse and owes its selections more to a lower end pricing range. The bar offers a full range of cocktails, but as we experienced - does not always prepare the drinks you order. In fact, at the end of the evening a few of the guys at our table ordered "after dinner drinks" - to which the server commented that "they [Clyde's] don't have any after dinner drinks" per-se, but can make any number of cocktails. The guys all ordered Old Fashions - only to be told that the bartender didn't make Old Fashions and instead made Manhattans. The best part of the whole thing - the server didn't even blink. She merely put the drinks down on the table, explained the mix-up, and walked away. Nice! Oh, and by the way - we paid for the mix-up drinks. The takeaway - Clyde's is a fun place to go if someone else is inviting you. It's unique and offers a dining experience you won't reproduce at too many places in the metro-area of Portland. It is not, however, a high-end steakhouse; and, if that is what you are looking for in your dining experience - there are far nicer (and better) places to select from in Portland.
