Good find!

Came here for dinner with my spouse last month. It was a pleasant surprise. Food was good, price was reasonable and service was good. Beef filet wellington is definitely the highlight.

First Class! Authentic French Bistro

By washsquare |

We just had a spectacular Birthday dinner at the Hyde Street Bistro. The ambiance is perfect . It's small but intimate. The owner (Yannick) warmly greeted us and showed us to our table. He was also involved in every aspect of your meal. He was very knowlegable about wines and recommended some fantastic ones for us. The Prices are reasonable and the wine list has a good range of pricing. The entree's were all excellent and beautifully presented and as authentic as anything you could find in France. Desserts were excellent, as well as the service. We highly recommend this Russian Hill neighborhood restaurant.

La France in SF

Wonderful, authentic French cuisine and warm, friendly service - that's La Cocotte. We'll be back on our next visit to SF.

Quaint french restaurant in the heart of Russian Hill

By GBG |

Really enjoyed our dinner at Cocotte. I had the duck leg and it was perfectly cooked. My husband had the coq au vin and he really enjoyed it. We both had the carrot soup appetizer and it was delicious. The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurant staff were very attentive. Our waiter was French and he told us which wines would pair well with our food choices. We ordered two different French wines by the glass and the pours were very generous. Our dessert was absolutely delicious. We had the caramel apple tarte. Overall, I liked this restaurant. I wouldn't say it was excellent but it was very good and the staff made our experience pleasant and well worth the trip. One final tip: The tables are very close together so you will hear the conversations of your neighbors. It's a tight space

Completely lovely.

Lovely bit of rustic French in San Francisco

By Mister E |

First off, this place specializes in rotisserie chicken. For good reason. It's one of the few places that serves organic chicken, for starters. Second, it is accompanied with sauces (each very good) and your choice of "cocotte" or side. I could eat the chicken here every day and not complain but they also have coq au vin and a butcher's cut special, which was osso buco when I had it. The place is very welcoming and very French as in a lot of French people eat there and if you close your eyes you might think you are in France. The wine list is great and the service is great, too.

Great menu! Delicious Beef Wellington and so many other amazing choices!

By Debi S |

Cocotte is on Hyde Street amidst the inner neighborhood of Nob Hill. The Trolley will roll by adding more ambiance to this restaurant. It is very small and the tables are quite close together but I feel it adds to the character. Reserve the cute table for 2 in a little alcove for a bit of intimacy. Favorites to start were the mussels and the duck liver foie gras. The tuna crudo looked fab too but we can only eat so much. Because we had large portions coming. Their Rotisserie chicken is moist delicious and also available for take out. We ordered the 1/2 chicken to die for! Not to be missed was the Beef Filet Wellington. The pastry surrounding the beef was light and tender as was the beef. Served with a large bone with exposed marrow. Fun atmosphere and delicious food at a very reasonable price. Great service too, don’t miss this! Make a reservation.

The essential!!

By Antoinebld |

We had already been to this restaurant 4 years ago. It was a mandatory stop on our road trip, because we loved this place so much! Nothing has changed! The staff is always so kind, helpful and attentive. The boss is disconcertingly kind! (some French bosses should come and do an internship in this type of establishment). The food is really excellent, French classics revisited with a Californian touch, it was really excellent. One thing is sure, if you like French gastronomy, don’t hesitate to stop at cocotte!

Beautifully authentic

By crimson999 |

Last minute choice on Hyde, the Bistro did not disappoint. Parisian quality with authentic decor and music. Chose the prix fixe. Parfait of chicken livers, Mignons of Pork and Banana creme brûlée (other choices available). All beautifully cooked and well presented. Good value (especially for SF) and not at all 'touristy' like so many. Well worth a visit, the Hyde cable runs directly outside.

Terrific

By outoford |

We loved this restaurant. We had a delicious meal in their cozy atmosphere as the perfect finale to a nice trip around northern California. Service was above average, very attentive but not intrusive. Tables were close but did not pose a problem. A true french experience in San Fran. HIghly recommended.

Hearty French Food

By Gailyn63 |

Don't expect gourmet food here, just hearty French food. We came here for Dine-Around-Town and had three courses for $38. Normally you get small plate for this price, but we had a duck leg big enough for two, as was the osso bucco. The desert, a tarte tatin, was large and good, too. Service was impeccable, as always. The bread is great, too.

A romantic local bistro.

By Dreamer9444 |

We go to the opera 2-3 times a year. Usually we do the $150-200 restaurant visit before the show that usually comes with great food, good service, average waits and busy atmosphere. Hyde Street Bistro is nothing like this. You can expect to have a clean, romantic, local, quite and fresh atmosphere. The waiters were outstanding, very polite and with great sense of time. Our bill including a 3-course meal and 2 glasses of wine was a bit over $100. The food was great in flavor, portions and presentation. This is a place that locals know about, and that is the feeling you will get... a romantic local bistro.

Cute neighboirhood restaurant

By CJK38 |

Came here Friday night without reservation and were lucky enough to find a table. They have a small bar area and a couple of outdoor tables, the place, in true European style, is small and you do feel you are having dinner with those seated next to you. It can also get a little loud. Service was pretty good, a little on the slow side at first, but always polite and attentive. We had their seasonal halibut, wonderful fresh with a delicate yellow corn and mushroom, butter sauce. The coq au vin was very tasty as well. Their chocolate cake was delicious and served at the right temperature, still warm and oozing inside. Reasonably priced, definitely will go back.

Outstanding, just outstanding

By London, Monaco, CA traveller |

We found the bistro by accident - we were actually looking for another restaurant but it caught our eye and we went in to check it out. The waiter was just fantastic. He put is in a romantic corner of the restaurant and wet through the menu carefully. My wife had the mussels which she loved. I went with a steak tartare and then we had a Beef Wellington. It was the best I've had this side of Mont Carlo. The wine was excellent and not outrageously priced the desserts excellent. My only disappointment is that I wanted to go back next Tuesday for my birthday - but they are closed on Tuesdays

Best dinner in 4 days in SF

By alohatripper |

Sept 15 While exiting the Seven Hills the other night, I saw this charming eatery nearby, and it beckoned to me. I entered, liked what I saw, and made an immediate reservation for dinner on this night. The host Anthony greeted us and remembered me from the other evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the starter onion soup and then the marvelous pork belly entree. I was hoping that a strip of fat would still be left between the lean, but alas the fat was cut away. The flavor and aroma of pork belly still lure me back. Their version of tart tartan was a wonderful ending to our nights in San Francisco. Within a 50 yards of one another, both Seven Hills and Cocotte are superlative choices for fine, but not expensive, dining.

A superb experience

By Dexter H |

I eat and it is something I've done for over 60 years. During that time, I have been blessed with some truly exceptional meals from some incredible restaurants across the globe (including France). I have added one more incredible experience to my list of best meals/restaurants ever - Cocotte. I was born and raised on Russian Hill in San Francisco. Like many of San Francisco's districts, it remains a haven for exceptional little hidden restaurants. On a recent escape from work week stress, we flew in, caught a Giants game and we were searching for that perfect little place, incredible food without the pretentiousness of the famous. I wanted Beef Wellington and Trip Advisor found me Cocotte. Beef Wellington is one of those foods that depending on the preparation and chef, is either blessed or cursed. We arrived and were greeted immediately by a staff member. It was a beautiful night and we elected to sit outside on the street. I was excited that the table was level and didn't require the stack of napkins to balance it. The waiter, a Parisian, was very attentive without being obstructive. For an appetizer, we selected the pate, which was as perfect as a pate can be. Fragrant and savory and served with a walnut and raisin batard toast. The Beef Wellington (which my wife had never eaten) arrived and was cooked as perfectly as a piece of pastry wrapped filet can be. I have eaten a considerable amount of Wellington and when I stop chewing, look at the next bite moving toward my mouth and say, "that is the best Beef Wellington I've ever had," it is memorable for me. The excellence of the meal revealed itself the next morning. After we woke up, the first words out my wife were, "hey." "Yes?" "Can we go back to Cocotte and have another Beef Wellington?" We have been together for almost 30 yrs. That was the first time after eating a meal anywhere, that she has said that. We returned the next night and had the same experience, sitting this time in the intimate interior. Same friendly staff, same incredible food. I will even admit to enjoying a vegetable side (broccoli with anchovies). The banana creme brulee was an excellent finish to a truly exceptional dining experience. Considering the quality of the fresh ingredients and the amount of time and effort that went into the preparation of same, the prices were very good. This is San Francisco after all. I have been charged far more money for far less quality in a number of establishments. From my perspective, when one has found a small, intimate restaurant with ambiance AND exceptional food, you probably shouldn't tell anyone. Our experience was incredible and Cocotte has become THE restaurant we will always return to on our trips back to the Bay. The problem with a good review is that it rapidly gets harder to get a table, but it also means that exceptional restaurants stay open. Bravo.

incredibly delicious food in a tiny, charming place with personalized service right from the chef - highly recommended!

what happened to this place

By sgytmd |

THere were great reviews on TripAdvisor. We made a reservation, which they lost (when I called to confirm). We made another. When we arrived, the restaurant was empty - and remained so. The waiter was sloppy and unprofessional, as was the bus boy. The food was just okay, but priced for being great. We visit SF frequently, had never been here, and will never go back.

A little bit of Paris in California

By nosh71 |

What a great restaurant - I cannot praise it enough! Attentive staff, cosy atmosphere and a real mixed crowd. Our starters of chicken liver parfait and snails in puff pastry had us struggling not to lick our plates clean! The main courses of duck were perfectly cooked and together with the desserts of creme brulee and chocolate pudding outshone anything I have ever had in Paris. This will be my first stop on my return trip to San Francisco. A little gem.

Totally hit the mark

By Malty55 |

Great night here. Chicken Liver Mousse, Fennel Salad, Beef Wellington, Rotisserie Chicken , Brussel sprouts, and a bottle of Gigoundas. Everything was well prepared, pacing was right, and service was friendly and attentive. Room was small and lively, not a place for a quiet conversation, but perfect for fun and laughter.

Charming French Restaurant in great neighborhood

By cleflar |

We reconnected with an old friend over dinner while visiting SF. She suggested this restaurant and I am very glad she did. We sat outside and watched the world walk by (including a LOT of cute puppies) while we talked. The staff was both attentive and unrushed, we spent several hours over dinner and never felt that they wanted to hurry us. The food was really good. I have not travelled extensively in France so I cannot vouch for the authenticity but I know that the food and wine were great. We were all too full for dessert. Reservations recommended.

Wannabe French, almost succeeds

By RonT58 |

Come to think of it, this atmospheric French Bistro style restaurant really tries hard to be French: not only with the cosy, slightly chaotic interior and the quite reasonable food but also with the waiter, who did his best to look arrogant and act annoyed. Well done indeed!

Very good food

By Zedd97511 |

Very good food, a bit oversalted perhaps, with a relaxed atmosphere and decor. Duck 3 ways was excellent, as was rabbit ragu. The chef appears o love duck and the dishes are worth trying-- though the 1/2 a duck for $50 seemed a bit steep. If you're a tourist, convenient to a cable car line a plus. Servers were friendly and knowlegeable. Not a large restaurant so reservations reasonable.

This place is so French...

This place is so French bistro that it brings me back to France each time. Last visit I was literally rubbing elbows with a Frenchman at the next table. Très confortable.

Wonderful hidden gem

By travellp4 |

We're staying in the tourist trap wharf and decided to walk in a different direction. We arrived here without a reservation and we were treated as if we're regulars. The place is small and very reminiscent of the bistros in the smaller arrondissements of Paris. Truly wonderful atmosphere, the food is simply delicious. The wait staff was very attentive and kind. The wine list is small but perfect, mostly fine French wines all reasonably priced considering what you pay for California wines in the restaurant near the tourists. That being said, this felt like a huge bargain for the excellent quality. The neighborhood surrounding the restaurant is quaint and quiet. This is a better side of San Francisco and there aren't that many lately. You won't see people lying around the street here.

Arrogant and misleading

By SydneyVera |

The maitre d’ of this small, supposedly charming and intimate French restaurant, barely greeted us when we arrived punctually for our dinner reservation. The wine list we were given bore no resemblance to the one posted on their website, most noticeably the pricing. When I pointed this out I was told that the wine list had changed in the steeply upward pricing direction. Where there had been at least three bottles of French red offered at under $50, now there were none. Of course, it is absolutely the restaurant owner’s decision what to charge for their wines but their published, online website should be accurate and up to date or taken down as misleading. This man spoke to us in a dismissive, arrogant manner amounting to complete indifference. We left and found a more congenial place for dinner. I recommend phoning to check all the menu information beforehand if you do choose to try Cocotte. Not a pleasant experience!

Incredible SF Restaurant Week Experience

By Jennifer Y |

A friend and I selected this restaurant, a participator in SF's restaurant week, for their 3 course tasting menu dinner- offered at the absolute steal of a price $40. A very intimate space with a limited number of tables, even though we had made a reservation (using OpenTable.com) we waited about 30 minutes to be seated. We found this acceptable, though I'm sure others would not. Since we were seated around 8:30pm on a Friday and lingered well past 10:30pm, I can't complain as seating is extremely limited. Their most intriguing menu option, a duck salami offered on the charcuterie plate, was not offered as part of the 3 course dinner menu, we opted to start with that and the cheese plate as an appetizer. Presented artfully on two large rustic cutboards, the appetizers dominated our diminutive table. The duck salami was definitely worth the extra cost, served along with a chicken liver pate so creamy it was like eating more flavorful butter, prosciutto, and coppa with pickled radishes and cauliflower as accouterments it was a fantastic compliment to the cheese board. Our cheese board had a sampling of flavorful triple cream brie, humbolt fog goat cheese, and a paper-thinly sliced firm cheese somewhere between parmesean and gouda whose origin I believe was Spanish. After savoring these delicacies over our first glass of wine we began the SF restaurant week tasting menu. Opting to choose 6 different dishes and share, we were able to taste essentially the whole menu. Starting with a smoked salmon crostini and a pear and endive salad was a welcome lightness and refresher- again with beautiful plating, a decent portion for a tasting menu enabling us to share. Not especially unique flavor combinations, certainly leaning more toward French Traditional with California locavore- the fruits and veggies were fresh, crisp and full of flavor while the salmon was clean and light with robust flavor. Our second course started with the Osso Buco which was fall-off-the-bone tender in flavorful pan sauce reduction served with polenta. Our other second course item was the cheese souffle, which taking in account extra prep time was served after we had nearly finished the Osso and our second glasses of wine- again, perfectly acceptable to us, but only because we were sharing all the dishes. It was around this time that we began a cordial and playful exchange with the Sommelier who additionally is the restaurant's manager. After discussing at length wine preferences (their wine list, though not extensive, is comprehensive, offering a wide range of affordable selections by the glass or bottle to accommodate many different kinds of tastes and to pair well with their dishes) and razzing him a bit for using Franzia in the kitchen, he surprised us with thoughtful wine pairings for our dessert course. We enjoyed the chocolate lava cake and the apple tart (the apple tart was the real winner) and our final glasses of wine while watching the cable cars rumble past on Hyde Street and blissfully full of good food and drink, ubered home to languish on the experience. We are each eager to return and try additional menu items. For now, we highly recommend, though we do not expect our next meal to be nearly as cost effective as the first.

Very good food and service

By chuckbtravelin |

A small homey restaurant we saw reviewed on Check Please. Limited menu but all choices very good. Among our table we had the rotisserie chicken with three sauces, the coq au vin, and the duck with the duck being the best of the three. The chicken dishes were really good - only pause is not as good as our homemade versions! We ordered all 3 offered cocottes (sides) - French fries, yellow potato gratin and spinach - all three excellent. The banana creme brûlée was delicious. A fun yummy evening with very friendly and attentive staff.

Small but amazing!

By Archetype |

This was close to where we were staying in SF so thought we would give it a try. SO glad we did. I had the lobster salad and beef Wellington. Absolutely amazing! A nice wine list too. The service was great and very attentive. Cocotte was a nice surprise!

Good service, even if they seat you late

By Aimee S |

We waited an hour to be seated even though we had a reservation. Normally I'd complain, but the staff was nice enough to give my group free champagne (the most expensive one on their wine list) and some appetizers. The chicken is great and they have good sides. The portions aren't huge, but you will leave full. Good wine list.

Perfect Neighborhood Gem

By NancyDyal |

Dropped in to the Hyde Street Bistro (French cuisine) on Sunday night about 6:15p, they were booked yet the three bar stools at the front of the house were open, my friends visiting from Florida and I snagged them immediately. Fabulous dinner, wine, and dessert. Warm and gracious service, wine and dessert. We especially enjoyed overlooking the restaurant while perched on our high stools above-- great chance to see what fellow diners were eating and all looked wonderful. Do not miss this neighborhood gem atop-- walk factor high and accessible via the Hyde Street Cable Car if you want.

As good as last time we visited

By Raymond H |

We came here 2 years ago for the Beef Wellington, back again with friends visiting from out of town. We just had Beef Wellington at one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants in London last month so wanted to do the comparison. Not bad, still better than anywhere that I can find Beef Wellington here. Wish they would expand the menu or at least rotate.

Village Feel in a Big City

By Raphael_9 |

This small and cosy bistro feels "up and out" of the main bustle of downtown San Francisco. Seems like a quiet neighbourhood (between Nob Hill and Russian Hill), but it is on the Powell-Hyde cable car line, and after a pleasant evening meal it should, in theory, be easier to get a seat on the otherwise tourist-laden cable car to get back to your hotel downtown. It's not cheap, but if you're looking for somewhere a bit special to have a nice meal before one last look at the city from the heights the cable cars reach, I'd recommend this one. The night we went, the restaurant was 3/4s full, and although there was only one waiter instead of the usual three, there wasn't one hitch or delay in our service. And, my steak was cooked to perfection!

This is one of my favorite neighborhood spots. Food is very good ... Coq Au Vin is my favorite ... plus Little Gem salad ... yummy!

Romantic table under the stairs

By djordan777 |

OK...I'll start by saying we did NOT eat in the super romantic little table under the stairs, but I want to go back and do it. The place is a super cute French bistro (labeled a rotisserie). It is intimate (aka small), but not super crowded. They did a good job with the atmosphere (nice colors, romantic lighting, attractive designs overall). The service was on point with that typical shared service (everyone was observant to make sure that you didn't need more water, a wine refill or something else). worth noting, I think it is a wine and beer place - they likely have cocktails, but I didn't see any real booze so likely created with soju or something - just get some wine :-) The food was delish! We shared starters of salad, salmon crudo, and Foie Gras. I could have just eaten starters as they all looked great. Then moved on to mains. Two of us had the Coq Au Vin, one had the cod, one the gnocchi and one the Beef Wellington. Everyone was super happy with their meals - so of course I want to go back and taste them all :-) Dessert was shared. The chocolate fondant was just right - not too sweet. And although I turned my nose up at the tart tatin saying it is always the same - this was distinctly different and DELICIOUS. Don't get sucked into the chocolate if you have to pick only one thing...I would totally get the tart tatin if returning. High ratings on service, food, and ambience. If you have visitors or a date, I assure you they will be impressed. This is fine dining, BUT it is a good value...not too expensive. Oh, and if you are on a date try to get that little table under the stairs...it was super cute and I really want to experience that spot.

Nice little French restaurant

By Jon N |

My wife and I had seen this restaurant while walking around the neighbourhood on our first night in San Francisco. It was a Saturday night and we were incredibly lucky to be able to just walk in off the street, as another couple had just cancelled! The food was pretty good - I had mussels to start, followed by sea bass and finishing with pumpkin tart. My wife started with rabbit, followed by duck leg confit, and finishing with profiteroles. The food was very nicely cooked, although my wife's duck was supposed to come with a side dish which never arrived. Waiter service was good and friendly, although our host took a little time to warm to us! The food was well cooked and tasty, but for the price ($130 including tip etc for the pair) I expected a little more.

Fun spot with great food and service

By jsr914 |

We capped off a great weekend in SF with dinner at the Hyde Street Bistro on a Monday night. We have eaten at a few spots on Hyde before and thought the Bistro would be worth a stop -- we were right! (The seafood and oyster house next door is also very good.) The food was flavorful, appealing in presentation and made with quality produce and seafood. We started with fresh bread and a bowl of mussels with a bottle of wine from their well-priced and well-stocked selection. For our entrees, my girlfriend greatly enjoyed her scallops and my sea bass was cooked perfectly. Portions were average, but we left full and happy. The atmoshpere is hip and cozy at the same time. Pleasant, personal service abounds. There was no push to give up the table or to eat quickly. Service was attentive but not over-burdening. Overall -- recommended!

Nice to have a French Bistro in this neighborhood

By TravelgalCathy415 |

This took over Hyde Street Bistro's location, so I decided to try it out. A French bistro menu is easy to predict, and this was very good. Parking in the neighborhood can be a challenge, so an after-dinner walk may be in store!

Great dinner

By Dave P |

Our daughter made reservations for us before a show and we were very pleased. Very much a French bistro with authentic French menu. We started with a wonderful French bread and a tapenade that was spectacular. I had a wonderful halibut, my wife had coq au vin and she loved it. My daughter had a half chicken and was pleased. The house Bordeaux was good and not too expensive. Watching the chef make home made parpadelle was fun. French fries were great as well. Fairly priced and they accepted a $50 coupon my daughter had from open table. Highly recommend!

Coq au Vin reason to dine here. Soup of day made my day. Endive salad scrumptious. Efficient staff; if you ask - offer tantalizing tasting ideas. Warm space.

Very average

By lika7212 |

Went there on Friday evening, birthday dinner for a friend, party of 5. Very small tables, crowded, tables are way to close to each other for a comfort. Portion sizes are ok; everything is seriously under seasoned, so if you are on the special no salt, no pepper, no garlic, etc. diet this place if for you. The heavily praised Coq Au Vin was very bland and just tasted like roasted chicken. Wine list is weak (tried one and it was pretty awful, Trader Joes sells better, enough said). We asked for a special acknowledgement for a birthday girl and they forgot. Overall impression: mediocre food, inefficient service (although with a real French accent). Prices are lower than many other places in the neighborhood but this is not good enough reason for us to go back.

Casual French Bistro

By Conseiller99 |

An interesting French bistro; very casual, not your usual Parisienne, more like a neighborhood upstart; but the service was friendly, and the cooking was good….real nice French onion soup and coq au vin; reasonably priced wine list. Small place/inside & outside dining.

Disappointed

By Kathleen A |

We returned to this lovely little restaurant on Hyde St for the second Christmas Eve celebration here. Christmas Eve 2015 was our first visit there and we had decided to return there for this year (thinking we had started a tradition). It is still a lovely spot, but I have to be honest and say that we were disappointed by the service. It is a small space so as is typical of many of the restaurants on Hyde, there really is no space for waiting at the entrance. When we walked in 15 minutes early for our reservation there was one party of 4 ahead of us. Then 5 other parties came in after us. The hostess forgot we were there. Needless to say we did not get seated for over an hour later AFTER every one else that came in after us, even though I tried to tell her she skipped us, she would not listen. Customer focus was lost that evening. The food was good (although they ran out of the one side we were all anxious to get) , the wine excellent, but I do not believe this will continue going here as a tradition.

Awful Sardine Can of a Place

By misanthropicdreamer |

My husband made reservations here for five people for Mother's Day. We had never been here but wanted to try something new. When we arrived I had to use the restroom. It is a tiny thing that is in the midst of the kitchen area. I have been in better restrooms in third world countries. There was urine in the toilet and the sink was stopped up and full of water with the stopper on the side of the sink. It was not clean and I was not happy. Back in the main room which is not much larger than an average bedroom they had tables stacked right on top of each other and one literally next to the open kitchen. That is where they chose to place our family. I felt like a sardine in a can and I hate that cramped feeling. The waiters kept bumping into me on their way to serve other customers. After the tenth invasion of my personal space I asked to move to another table by the wall. We were moved and waited for a server to ask us what we wanted to eat. In the meantime, I read the menu for something delicious. Nothing looked good unless you wanted an egg dish. Do you want egg or egg? Finally, the waiter arrived and told us that he was sorry but he had to move our five person party out of the six person table because they had a "bigger party." My husband explained that it was Mother's Day and his wife was in no mood for musical chairs. They insisted we move. So we moved right out of that horrible place and drove immediately to Le Colonial where we had an amazing lovely lunch with terrific food and service. My advice? Skip this awful dive unless you enjoy cramped space, bad service and dirty toilets.

Date night

By Farrah F |

Had dinner here on Sunday my first time here. They only offer wine here no cocktails and the parking is hard to find so be patient. Ordered the Traditional onion soup which for me needed a bit more seasoning or salt which is odd because normally everywhere else is packed with too much flavor or to salty. The Beef Wellington- was pretty good the meat was tender and juicy though the pastry part was falling apart. Coq au vin was a classic traditional dish with rich flavors. As for the dessert ordered the chocolate cake and it was pretty good. Overall the service was good, sat outside it was a nice way to end our night.

Midnight in Paris

By LiberalTraveler |

We were transported to Paris by the waiter, food and atmosphere. The chicken liver parfait appetizer with walnut toasts is a must. We had the Lamb Stew and Beef Wellington which were both excellent and perfectly paired with their house Bourdeax wine. The locals were having the Moules and frites. This is an unpretentious neighborhood bistro off the tourist beaten path in San Francisco that is worth checking out. It is also right on the Hyde St. cable car line.

Small space, good food, tough to understand staff

By heinerda |

The food was great. The staff was tough to understand. If I planned it better, I would have taken the trolley and got off near the restaurant. We were able to walk to a better bar scene about 10 minutes away. All 4 people at our table were glad we went here

food and service just OK - even tho it was fairly early (6AM), me and my dining partner were not impressed by the conclusion of our meal. perhaps this was on off night - probably not considering how many reviews by other diners were quite negative!

Warm and vibrant atmosphere, deliciously fresh food

By OConnell78 |

I had driven by Cocotte a few times in the evening and was drawn by the glow that seemed to emanate from its windows. Finally, my family group of four had dinner there this past December. The warm flattering light and the glow of the copper pots on the wall make everyone look their best. The wine list is vast, but the selections are interesting and the server made excellent recommendations. The service was cheerful & efficient , but not intrusive. The mache salad is simple, clean, and fresh. My son ordered the meat platter as an hors-d'oeuvre and was delighted. The grilled squid starter was excellent too. Some of the dishes are served "en Cocotte", small lidded casseroles. Try the spinach with a garlic apple cider or the French fries with aioli. (The ingredients are a far cry from the dull casseroles my mother served in my childhood ) We were very pleased with our main courses as well. The petrale sole is a winner! The portions are sensibly generous - this restaurant offers good value for the quality of each serving and the size as well. It's not cheap - it delivers on its promise. This is a very cozy place with great food. It would be a lovey rendez vous restaurant for a romantic dinner. I highly recommend "Cocotte" on Hyde Street.

Lively little spot for some wine and food

By strax2015 |

Visiting a friend in the neighbourhood, he suggested this little French restaurant for some wine and dinner. There was a 20 minute wait at the door for a seating of 4. This is to be expected on a Friday night, and the weather was beautiful, so I was happy to wait! The inside has that distinctive, bustling atmosphere, that makes you feel like you're part of a pretty cool crowd. Props for that atmosphere! For food, I ordered the duck platter as a main, and Chicken Livers Parfait as a starter. I wanted something light and shareable. Oh, and bottle of Oyster Bay Sauv Blanc. The food was fine, but I think I expected more from the duck platter. Duck is such a great meat to play around with, and could have gone with a bit more flavour. Duck salami just tastes like the salami you get from a store! The liver parfait had a lovely texture, and was decent size for sharing. Overall, service was attentive. I did notice that the year of the Oyster Bay that they listed on the menu was different from the one they served - my friend brought this to their attention, but was just wondering. Turns out they had a new shipment that morning and hadn't had time to update the menus yet. The server was very gracious in his explanation. 3.5 out of 5! Perhaps next time, I'll try more heavy-hitting dishes so I can get a better sense of the food.

Great atmosphere and excellent food

We visited Cocotte for Christmas night dinner (2014) and loved it so much we made a second reservation for the following week! We were recommended Cocotte by friends of ours back home and it definitely lived up to its reputation. There is a great atmosphere within the restaurant which was very buzzy and busy both nights we dined there. It's a very small space but has a really local neighbourhood feel to it and turns tables over all night. Both nights we had great service and were made to feel very welcome. The food was just as exceptional and we'd been advised. French classics like coq au vin and duck confit were superb. Another highlight on the menu was the sea bass with cous cous and although we over ordered on the french fries (two between three people) they all vanished!! The wines were also lovely and must recommend trying the banana creme brûlée or apple tarte tatin or both! We will definitely be visiting again when we are next in SF and would love to try the roast half chicken. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a wonderful and memorable meal and night!

Nice little find on Hyde!!

We read about this place in a magazine in our hotel. We tried making reservations for a later time but evidently this place is very popular because the only time we could get in was at 5:30. The space is very small and therefore seating is limited. We were greeted by a very friendly wait staff who promptly sat us down and took our drink orders. Luckily, the early reservation was a blessing because we were there for happy hour. My wife and I ordered red wines and shared an appetizer of mussels. They were bathing in a butter sauce and they literally melted in your mouth. My wife ordered a calamari dish served with what I think we're butterbeans. She seem to enjoy it because there was nothing left on her plate. I had a bite of hers and it was delicious. I ordered the rotisserie chicken which came with three types of dipping sauces. All three sauces were phenomenal. I also got a side of Brussel sprouts and they too were cooked to perfection. For dessert we ordered a molten chocolate lava cake. I guess this is where my one complaint will come in. We were expecting the cake to be a little bit bigger; however, the cake was extremely small - I would say smaller than a hockey puck. This wasn't a lot to share among two people. Again, this is probably good so that we don't get too large in the waist. The entire time the wait staff was attentive, talkative and very friendly. We highly recommend this place and the next time we are visiting San Francisco we will definitely be going back.

Exceeded the hype.

We chose this placed based on the reviews we read below, hoping to find a nice place to celebrate a birthday and continue our honeymoon. While not normally devotees of french cuisine, we have to say that this place may have converted us. The ambience during the evening is wonderful, active and intimate at the same time. You can look at the pictures to get some idea. It was fairly crowded, but getting a reservation was no problem. We were seated immediately. Only one waiter and one bus boy were attending to the cliental, but they were extremely efficient and we never had to wait long for anything. We chose the salmon tartar as an appetizer ($10), and it was our first indication of just what a tremendous meal was to come. A half bottle of Kosta Browne pinot noir ($34) was especially good, which is saying something since we'd just been in Napa the previous two days. For entrees I chose the alaskan halibut ($25), my partner, the scallops ($20). Both were incredible, though of the two, the scallops were simply superb. The spices, sides and portions were all excellent. Neither of us have had better food at any price, and given the quality of the meals, along with the environment and the service, we felt it was a steal. Dessert, a souffle au chocolat ($7.50), which evidently is chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon was also delicious, as was the glass of port ($9)that we shared with it. All told, one of the best meals we've ever enjoyed. We plan on making it a point to return every time we visit San Francisco.

Very Good French Bistro

By JohnT641 |

We were there on a Saturday dinner. We arrived around five thirty and not too busy. Ordered the meat platter for appetizer. Cured Beef and Pork were good but the chicken liver paste were outstanding. For main dishes, we had Grilled Sea bass- Very good. La Rotisserie Chicken- very tender and flavorful- Very good and Butcher's choice/ Pork Chop- OK but no flavors. We had Banana Crème Brule- very good and Chocolate Cake- Outstanding. Overall, we like the services and good quality food at reasonable prices. As most people mentioned, the parking was a huge problem for the area.

A neighborhood gem

By vallejowilla |

The food, wine, service, ambiance -- all were delightful. The food was local, fresh, deliciously prepared. The server suggested a lovely wine which complemented our dinners. We could even park nearby, or, since cable cars travel along Hyde Street, you could come that way. I look forward to coming again -- it's open every night except Tuesday.

Great food and wine in a cozy space. The decor is casual, open kitchen, lovely staff. The chicken is wonderful, so are the other dishes on the small but interesting menu

Restaurant Week Disappointment

By Gailyn63 |

We returned here after a long break for the $40 restaurant week dinner, consisting of three courses. The food was okay, with the osso bucco recommended, The tarte tatin and molten chocolate cake were average at best. The main annoyance was the hostess; she has to go. Despite the restaurant being empty, she sat us next to the only table occupied, then sat the next two couples next to us. Needless to say, stacking people on top of one another is a bad strategy, unless you have excellent food, which they don't.

Fixed price dinner

By zenff |

Went for the $40 prie fix dinner. The duck in the frisee salad was a bit too salty. The osso buco was fine, but not outstanding. The banana brulee was disappointing because the creamy part simply did not have the right texture. It is the first time I was ever disappointed by dessert! Service is good.

Great food and wine

By The_Doctor01 |

Great food and wine. Loved the fois gras and cheese souffle, with a good Syrah wine. Chocolate cake good but not great. Owner Phillipe very friendly. Great experience, highly recommend it.

Fabulous Find!

By abcdef_tx |

Great find! We were really concerned about the tables being so close to each other (very close to your neighbor) but the food and service is so great that you will soon forget! Smoked salmon appetizer was wonderful and our filet wellington and scallops were amazing! Waiters were very helpful, although hard to understand at first. We had a reservation for 8pm and still had to wait about 10 mintues but they were very accomodating. Take the Powell Hyde cable car there and it will drop you off right in front!

Adorable French Restaurant - A True Neighborhood Gem!

By Laura Y |

Beautiful little French restaurant with the best people-watching/lounge bar in the front. High ceilings with wooden beams and an open kitchen in the back, with cute candlelit tables and very friendly staff. Came here for a girl's night dinner and was pleasantly surprised to find tables on OpenTable for the night of. We shared grilled squid and beef tartare tacos as appetizers then cauliflower and potato gratin for sides. My tomato tart entree was simply to die for - the tomato melted in your mouth! Also had a golden apple tart served with crème fraiche for dessert which was so warm and moist and completely DIVINE. Needless to say, I have fallen in love with Cocottte and will definitely be back soon! Great spot for friend dinners, date night, and family events.

Local French restaurant

By Chartreuse |

We came for a Valentine's dinner which cost us $200, but Hubby ordered a glass of French red wine and they charge health care tax which added to the meal cost. It was a 3 course prix fixed dinner for $85 per person, with 3 options for appetizer, main and 2 options for dessert. The place is rather tiny, seating was crowded, packed in for about 35 persons. I had to explain to the couple next to me it was prix fixe as it was hard NOT TO overhear every bit of their conversation. The couple on the other side of us sat in an alcove with a slanted low ceiling such that the big guy (height and girth) had a difficult time getting out after their meal. Service was OK, nothing great. The waiter brought the wrong entree to our table and he took it back and the chef yelled at him. I had the large disc of foie gras, it was supple and creamy with thin bread slices. Very good. Hubby ordered the lobster, overcooked chunks of it served on a cast iron pan. We both tried the pastry puff enclosed beef Wellington. It was topped with mushrooms just under the crust and served with green vegt. The piece was very large and each of us could only finish 1/2 of it and took the rest home. My banana creme brulee was good and topped with slices of bananas, the brulee was vanilla tasting. Hubby's floating island was odd looking and nothing special. During special occasions, when they call you to confirm your reservation a couple of weeks earlier, they will ask you for your credit card to hold your reservation. I wasn't comfortable doing that over the phone especially when the guy who answered the phone tells me that he keeps the numbers locked up! I was also told on the phone that you can't cancel less than 1 week prior to your reservation or they will charge you.

Cocette translates to delicious

We came for the Beef Wellington, but they ran out ... dang. So I had the Pork chop and it was delicious. we went on a Saturday night. Make reservations. It was crowded but we were seated within minutes of our arrival.

Local gem (nob hill)

Open only a few months, we were rewarded for trying something off the radar. Charming small restaurant with excellent French food, I recommend the coq au vin and the Beef Wellington . Service personal and efficient. Soon you will need reservations!

Avoid at all costs!

By Mrs_Snip |

Had dinner here on March 26 for my husband's birthday. Terrible service from the get-go. The maitre'd/manager/waiter, "Phillipe" started the evening by not listening to a word I said regarding my husband still parking, while my daughter and I were ready to be seated. He apparently did not bother to look at our Open Table reservation for 3, including the notes that it was a birthday celebration. Although there was only one other party of 2 in the restaurant at the time, he was too busy furiously writing on a pad to help us get seated. We had to move tables ourselves in this unnecessarily cramped space in order to sit down, knocking over a vase with flowers while doing so. Phillipe, so distracted with his scribbling, did not even notice. He was the rudest person I have ever encountered and if it were not my husband's birthday, we would have walked out. There was a total of 4 parties that came in there all night, but yet the service was still HORRIBLE! We had to ask for a second piece of bread, but another pat of butter per person was too much to expect. The salmon tartare tasted off, but I felt too intimidated to send it back. We were served all night by the busboy, as Phillipe was just too busy with his pen and pad to even look up at times. We felt unwelcome and treated like crap. I asked to take home 3/4 of my expensive bouillabaisse so I could enjoy it the next day, but when I asked for it at the end of the meal, I was informed it was "thrown away". I believe it was put back into the pot. Most restaurants "gift" a birthday person a free desert but not here. It is no coincidence that the Hyde St Bistro was empty all night, while Hyde St Seafood Cafe next door was packed at 6 when we arrived and was still packed at 8:30 when we left. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY HERE! SF HAS TOO MANY GOOD PLACES TO PUT UP WITH A RUDE [--] LIKE PHILIPPE! The owner, Aurore Martinez, is completely unreachable by phone or email and it is clear she does not care.

Très Bon!

Delicious French meal in a small quaint French setting. The French onion soup and Coq au vin were delicious. Though I didn’t try the desserts, they looked very tempting. If you like French food, give this place a try.

French Restaurant

By Diwata S |

One of our favorite restaurant. We've been here several times on special occasions. We specially like their roasted chicken and salad. The place is very small and the tables are too close to each other. The servings are small and pricey but delicious. They have a wide selection of wine. It is located in a nice neighborhood of San Francisco. We recommend this place.

Rude service, awful.

By MXTRAVELLERER |

My wife, and kids were looking forward to our reservation at Cocotte. We had our small service dog along as well. I am an Iraqi veteran with post traumatic stress syndrome and have a license to have my therapy dog with me. That being said, the large woman that greeted us coldly told us that she would not accommodate our service dog in her restaurant (which was empty at the time). She offered us a small table out on the sidewalk. Normally that would have been ok but it was cold outside and they had no heaters. Also the sidewalk has an incline to it and would have made it quite uncomfortable to eat off of. I tried once again to come inside and was rudely rebuffed. At that point, we decided to leave, just couldn't take the rude behavior of their "host". I must say that the server tried to accommodate us the best she could and was quite sweet about it but the damage was done. We would not try their restaurant again. We ended up at 1760 on Polk which was surprisingly good and the owners and wait staff were quite friendly and accommodating. Shame on you Cocotte.

Food is what you go here for

By YQUIN |

Big turn off for me: the service. Arriving and getting somebody trying to force me to sit in the bar because I was solo. I was about to leave, when somebody else offered me a table. And I has not regretted doing so. Open kitchen concept, I was able to see all the details of how the non-French cooks were preparing the delicious French food that came at the end.

Amazing food

By Maria-Ruxandra |

Came here with my husband and 3 other friends. Loved the ambiance & french music:) I think we tried almost everything on the menu besides the chicken. We loved the food. More than that we loved our bill. It's not a cheap restaurant, however it's not one of the very expensive either. The only problem was parking. Be prepared to look for parking for about 30-40 minutes. We want to go back for sure but parking is not fun at all!!!

This warm, welcoming restaurant in San Francisco has the best rotisserie chicken and creative vegetable dishes

By Susan J |

The chicken and side dishes are amazing at this small, cozy neighborhood restaurant. The menu is limited but everything we tried in our two visits to the restaurant was spectacular, flavorful, fresh, and served beautifully. Highly recommend this restaurant among the many options one can find in that neighborhood.

Fantastic meal

A truly bizarre experience ....... beware!!!

By E H |

We selected this place to celebrate the engagement day of my great nephew. The following was our evening: 1- although informed when booking, the restaurant did not even say congratulations (much less offer anything), 2- food came we had not ordered. We had great trouble flagging down a waiter to have it removed and given to the right table before it got cold, 3- several dishes we did order were tepid and had to be rewarmed, 4- one of us was served the rotisserie chicken 15 minutes after everyone else was served and half way through their meals- no explanation, no apology, 5- the duck confit entree was so tough it was inedible, and finally, 6- we were never asked if we wanted something else, told that the problem was that we did not have a sharp enough knife (for confit????), and that we were the first customers to ever complain about the confit. To top it off- we were told we ate too much to not charge us.... (I promise on my father's grave, we had 2 bites, one for my husband to initially taste and one for me to confirm his problem!!!!!! I still haven't figured out how we could decide it was poorly done with out trying it). I then shared my meal with my husband- both of us, of course, left hungry. The waiter threatened to quit his job if the duck confit was removed from the bill! He is still gainfully employed- it wasn't.... PLUS, THEY ADDED A 20% TIP TO OUR BILL ALTHOUGH WE WERE OBVIOUSLY A VERY UNHAPPY TABLE OF 5!!!!!!!!!!!. I can only assume the waiter is a nephew of the owner. We gave up, not wanting to have our great nephew's day impacted more by continuing to ask for the item to be removed from the bill.

Huge Disappointment

By KC |

I made reservations 8/6/2021 for my anniversary. The notes on my reservation were this. "Would like the nook table. It's our 21st anniversary. Making up for not being able to go out to celebrate last year for our 20th anniversary." They confirmed my reservations and I thought we were all set. We arrived at the restaurant and the young gentleman asked if we had reservations. We said yes and gave us our name. He said sit anywhere that is for 2 people. He did not escort us to the table or anything. We walk over and see that the nook table was already occupied. When the gentleman came back and gave us the menus I politely asked if he had seen the notes in our reservations. He said yes but then pulled out his phone check. He then looked up and then said oh well there is only one Nook table. No explanation, no apology and he did not speak to us the rest of the night. It was our first time there and we had intentions of coming back with our kids. The food was excellent the server that attended to us was great. All that said I am not sure I would go back and I wouldn't recommend a place that you pay over $100 for food and wine pairing to not be treated like a valued customer. The couple in the nook had the same order we had but their wine pairing was catered to their meal. The gentleman who disregarded us would bring the wine in bottles and it was specific to their meal. My husband and I were given the same wine and it was not the same as the other couple received. The gentleman helping them as well as the couple were white and we are not. Not sure if that played into it. Paid lots of money to be treated like a second class citizen. If you don't care about that and just want goo food go here. Also they don’t check for proof of vaccination and tables are not socially distanced.

An experience not to be missed!

By kpflueger |

We had a delightful dinner at the Hyde Street Bistro. The atmosphere was cozy, the staff very friendly and welcoming. When we go out to eat we enjoy making an evening of it so it is always a treat to find a restaurant where we are not rushed and can set the pace of the meal. I had the Ravioli and my partner had the Coq au vin. The Ravioli was scrumptious and my partner said that the Coq au Vin was cooked to aboslute perfection! The goat cheese flan was a very tasty appetizer and the chocolate fondant was a perfect finish to a thoroughly enjoyable meal. We will definitely be back and recommend this restaurant without reservation to anyone looking for a very enjoyable dining experience.

Last night in San Francisco dinner at Hyde Street Bistro

By Mvislandrr |

Our last night in San Francisco we ate at the Hyde Street Bistro. We had walked by the restaurant a number of times during our sightseeing excursions. The concierge at our hotel made us reservation & gave us a ride in the hotel car. The food & wait staff were fantastic. I had potato encrusted salmon it was the best salmon I have ever eaten. The wine & drinks were awesome too!

Worth the trouble

By scsilveira |

Small restaurant set against busy Hyde Street. Parking is tough; try the Polk street lot south of Pacific. Plant is pretty, but indeed, somewhat noisy, tough with quiet waitstaff. Many dishes are served from cocottes, small Dutch ovens, and feature "coq" in various styles. While it may not be tempting to go out for rotisserie chicken, I strongly support it; my half chicken and side broccolini cocotte was wonderful. Other entrees--tomato tarte and halibut--were equally great. While wines by glass are pricy, my chicken and side were $21, and desserts are all $7.

Quaint place but slightly pricey

By LucienS |

Good French cuisine in a lovely and quaint environment. The Coq a vin was exquisite and the dessert excellent. The price was a bit on the high side for the food we ate, but overall a good experience.

Great neighborhood bistro - even if a bit off-season

By Feast-Blog |

Just home from a prix fixe meal at Hyde Street Bistro. For $30, it was very, very good. I was fortunate to share the meal with a friend who is great at eating half a plate and switching so for starters, we shared a salmon salad with fennel and sumac. This was very nice and quite summery; a platter of smoked Pine Loch Duart Salmon topped with a shredded fennel salad, studded with sumac and a citrus dressing. The salmon was not overly smoked and of great quality. Cool and refreshing, served with a Rhone white blend, this was the preferred starter. The second was a foie flan, served warm with apples and and a port glaze. While good, it seemed out of place at this time of year. I would have adored it in October or November, but for summer fare, I think it should have been more indicative of its season; cool and enticing instead of warm and comforting. Our second set of shared courses started with "Crispy Monterey Calamari Sundried Pesto, Parmesan Risotto, Green Sechwan Foam." I'm not entirely what sechwan (schezwan?) is, but this was very interesting risotto with a bit too many flavors. The calamari themselves were absolutely perfect when they could have been incredibly rubbery. And the risotto, again, was absolutely perfect prepared -- not too a dente or too soupy. But with such perfect rice and perfect fish, and very good sundried pesto, why add the foam? Or, why add the pesto? Either flavor would have been just fine, but both together seemed too convoluted. My friend ordered and drank all of his Cotes du Rhone with this dish and I only had a quick sip so I have no comment. The other entrée was "Pulled Lamb, Eggplant, Red Bell Pepper Coulis, Pesto." This was served on a smaller plate and while a smaller portion, did not pull punches on flavor or quality. Tender and rich, the pulled lamb was piled into a large meatball-sized offering of rich meat with slices of thin eggplant and the two rich sauces; the red pepper coulis and the pesto. In this case, the two sauces worked well with the rich meat but like the foie, would seem a better dish served in the fall. It was very nice and homey, but slightly ill-conceived for the season. I ordered a du Pape with the lamb and with a freshly opened bottle, needed some breathing room to open. Two desserts came out and we gave the waiter/Maitre'D carte blance to serve us some dessert wine. The first dessert we finished easily was a "Vanilla panna cotta, Strawberry pepper coulis, candy almond" served with a glass of Sainte-Croix-Du-Mont. A very well-made panna cotta, it was the combination of fruit and cruncy bits that brought the dessert together. Or maybe it was the Sainte-Croix-Du-Mont, a slight botrytris cinera wine with beautiful brightness to juxtapose the fruit and nut. The other dessert was 'chocolate moelleux, ''Mint creme Anglaise"'. I'm sorry I didn't make a note of the cognac-based dessert wine we had; very clear and light, there was just enough spunk to complement the rich, molten chocolate and hint of mint from the Anglaise. I was a little concerned; usually Banyuls or port works well with chocolate, EXCEPT when mint is introduced as a flavor element. All three offerings were just lovely and a great ending. But we didn't finish there. As we finished up the meal, we were each brought a half-glass of sparkling rosé, a perfect after dinner apertif that was unexpected and quite thoughtful. The meal with drinks was in the $125 range before tip. And while the major detractor was that the dishes were served a little off-season, this is a delightful unexpected French bistro that should have been busier than they were.

A very good alternative

By phototype |

Friends visited the area on short notice and we wanted to show them a "real" San Francisco experience. Our first choice (the excellent Frascati) was understandably booked up, so we opted for Hyde St. Bistro which was nearby and didn't lead to any other changes in our plans. It is tiny (all the restaurants on Hyde are in old small buildings), but the food was excellent. Duck confit flatbreads, scallops in a tomato asparagus sauce and smoked trout salads were highlights and a porkchop as big as the flight deck of the USS Hornet was right behind. The wine list is a bit expensive and the only negative point was the efficient Euro-waiter's rather aggressive attempts to upsell the wine. The Fixe Prixe is a very good deal.

Chaming place and location!

By J Davis |

Cocotte is the newer restaurant with a French twist that replaced others in the same location on one of the most charming streets in San Francisco: Hyde Street. Little cable cars "ride halfway ride halfway to the stars" on this street, and many beautiful trees line the sidewalk. In it newer form, the location borrows its name from a baked French dish that is small and baked. They serve several options for these, plus the intro and main courses are very well done, though with a short menu. Highly recommend this charming location! I had Coq Au Vin and a Salmon Crudit appetizer. Both were wonderful!

A taste of France in San Francisco

By Scolli01 |

We had an opportunity to have dinner at Hyde Street Bistro while on holiday this week and had one of the best French meals we've had in a long time. The food was fantastic, the room quaint, and the ambiance was very French. Everything we had was freshly made and well with the wait. We had a great night and will definitely be back!

Cute little bar

By Joanne L |

Just stopped in for a drink. Bartender was very knowledgeable about all the wines. The bar itself is small. The restaurant is also small. Bar seats maybe 8-10. The Riesling was delicious.

Excellent food, great atmosphere

By Gdmack2 |

Dining here feels like one has gone far away--maybe France, maybe Sydney. The restaurant is small, it has a great atmosphere, it is in a wonderful neighborhood (on the Hyde Street Cable Car line). The food is WONDERFUL. Beef Wellington, Rabbit over pasta, Coq au Vin. Next time I want to try the roast chicken. Wonderful desserts, and a nice, reasonably priced wine list. We really enjoyed ourselves, and thought the service was very good. The prices are right, and it feels like good value. It is a little noisy, but not too noisy for a group of four people to have a great conversation. We would definitely go back, and we would definitely recommend it. In fact, we are going back next month, even though parking can be challenging (they have no valet parking), and it takes us about 45 minutes to drive into the City to eat here.

Good but not great

By Sguelpen |

Came for a business dinner and since we had an early reservation the manager rushed us through the motion. I can't blame him since he needs to turn tables but we kept ordering drinks and ended up with a $230 check for the two of us. I ordered mussels as an appetizer and they were just ok - not what I expected in a French restaurant. I had the beef Wellington as a main dish and it was very good! The place is very cute with a small bar and a decent selection of wine. I would repeat but make sure I have a later reservation so I don't get rushed.

Good food, but noise was off the charts, and maitre d' was horrid

By Michael H |

If your interest in a restaurant is confined to food only, then this is a place for you. If, however, you like to talk during your meal, look elsewhere - this place is the loudest i have ever experienced, and I go to restaurants often. We chose to leave for dessert to go somewhere else, anywhere else, to escape the din. The other major negative: the maitre d'. When we, my wife and I, arrived at exactly 6pm, the precise time of our reservation, she insisted on seating us at the bar instead of the table (which was ready). There was barely anyone in the place at that time. When the other couple of our foursome showed up 3 minutes later, we were seated at the table. Her refusal to seat us at the table was incomprehensible, and the opposite of service - it was just insulting.

Formerly Hyde Street Bistro

By sfimporter |

Came in for Easter Brunch. Not bad for it being a holiday. I was definitely underwhelmed by the croque madam. Too little ham, too much bread, and the egg was just a tad undercooked. The accompanying salad was perfectly dressed. Desserts were good - the table split profiteroles and tarte tatin. It's quite quaint because its right on the cable car line - so a perfect journey for tourists coming either from Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf. I would go back and give them another chance.

Hidden treasure

By Pegg M |

We stumbled across this place while we were walking and it started raining. We tucked in and had a wonderful meal and great service. The owner was so attentive to our ever request - he even plugged in my IPhone which was dead while charming us with stories of France. The French Onion Soup, Chicken Liver Parfait, Risotto and Scallops were some of the best we have ever had. Next time we are in San Francisco we will be back!

Best meal of our USA trip

By DJT01 |

Our last night in SF and this restaurant had been recommended. French themed, with a definite Californian twist. The Chicken was obviously high quality as the flavour was beautiful. My partner had the Beef Wellington which he raved about. The side dishes (cocottes) were very tasty. Appetizers and deserts were also very good, although the profiteroles were a little 'crunchy' for my taste. There seemed to be an issue with the number of staff working on the evening we were there and things were taking a bit longer than would be expected, but I think this may have been just that night. The tables are quite close (as in Paris) but not uncomfortably so. All in all I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Hyde street bistro

This place had very cramped seating but great service and great location. Service was a little slow but I was with good company so I didnt mind. Towards the seating, the tables were close enough that I felt like the other people were a part of my table. But i'd still definately eat here again.

Worth a visit

By ANNA F |

We first visited this restaurant in 2015 - had a memorable meal (the duck was superb!). We returned this week (9th May) - received the same warm welcome and enjoyed another delicious meal. Their signature chicken dish was tender and tasty and the duck was once again - "superb". The staff were friendly and service excellent. Worth a visit.

Welcome to Christmas

By EleanorRigbyScotland |

My family and I had dinner on Christmas Night in this restaurant. As expected, it was very busy as there was not many restaurants open in the City. We had a reservation and we were given a complimentary drink whilst we waited on our table. There seemed to be some confusion between the waiters regarding what was still available on the set menu but we ordered and waited patiently for our appetizer. After a while we noticed tables around being served and their dishes being cleared away. We realised something was amiss but lo and behold at that point the waiter appeared with our main course !! Obviously, we pointed out we were still waiting on our first course. After a while our starter arrived and then the main course. All of which was excellant. At this point we were not too bothered about the chain of events as the restaurant was extremely busy and at the beginning of the meal there seemed to be some confusion between the waiters who were serving us. Unfortunately, a waiter approached my husband and asked if we enjoyed our meal, my husband replied the food was excellant but he was disappointed in the service. The waiter took umbrage at this and replied 'Welcome to Christmas'. After that our bill was placed on the table and we left. Obviously, training is required here for when something goes wrong. Why ask if you dont want feedback ? Why open on Christmas night if you can't cope?? Ironically, On this Christmas Night you managed to spoil a very special reunion for a family when it could have easily been rectified by an apology instead of rudeness.

Will never go back

By foodandwineguy2014 |

My girlfriend walked in first while I parked car for an early reservation at 5:30. Even though only one other couple was in the restaurant they would not seat her till I arrived and made her wait at the bar. She ordered a glass of bubbles while she waited and the bartender/manager convinced her to try their special overly sweet aperitif which was terrible. Then he over poured her flute and left the sticky concoction all over her glass and the bar. He never cleaned it up so she asked him to and he offered her the nasty used bar cloth to clean it herself. When I arrived expecting to be seated at the private romantic table I called and reserved in advance they walked us to a different table because the one couple that was there already was sitting at the table I reserved. I drove in from Mill Valley because the manager promised me that certain table. Tried not to make a scene even though I was very upset. We ate mediocre food and left very disappointed. Will not return.

What a joke of a restaurant

By RoseannH |

We had received a great recommendation for this restaurant and were very disappointed. The server had an attitude from the start but figured, hey it's just because it's icy cold in this place. The sauces were heavy and overdone, the fries were fried in year old grease and very bad; the meat was overdone. On top of everything, they put 3 people in a small table beside us and constantly had to ask me to move my seat and handle food over my head each time they poor diners asked for anything. TERRIBLE experience all around.

A Delightful Find!

By 49Happytraveler |

We accidentally ended up at this restaurant as I was trying to make a reservation at another very similarly named place and I misspelled the name:). What a wonderful accident!! This is a small place with indoor/outdoor seating and a kitchen open to the dining area. We arrived early about 20 minutes early (the place was still closed), and they came out and asked us to wait at the local wine bar down the street until they were through feeding the staff. We obliged and returned just after they opened and a number of people were already seated. It is a popular place, so make a reservation if you can. We were a party of 4 and had the mushroom soup, beef wellington, duck confit, rotisserie chicken and the coq au vin. All were served piping hot, with some wonderful sides, spinach, ratatouille, potato gratin. Everything was very good! Not a dud in any of our selections. Lovely sauces for the meats, great flavorful food. Apparently, known for the rotisserie chicken; it looked (not my meal and I wasn't offered a bite :( amazing and juicy. Would return on a frequent basis if we lived in the city.

Great place

By MadridClydo |

We had a team dinner here and it was my first time. I cannot say enough good things about it. The food and portion sizes were perfect. The atmosphere and waiters were really good. It is definitely a place I will come back to. The restaurant is small so get a reservation, but don't miss it! We had the pre fixe menu and it was a good deal and affordable. For dinner I had duck confit, potatoes and braised Brussels sprouts. We shared several desserts that were all good.

Great Little Surprise

By James C |

Recommended by a native, this turned out to be a great find. French inspired, food and service were very good. Pricing was reasonable. Sort of a small neighborhood eatery, but somewhat classy.

great restaurant!

By yoslug |

My husband literally choose this restaurant blindly as a nice place for us to dine one of the nights we were in San Fran - we got very lucky! The staff was very attentive & the food was out of this world. It had somewhat of an ecclectic crowd/atmosphere too which was nice - it was our first night there & we felt right at home in the city.

Our San Francisco Favorite!

By awhitelady |

A dear friend made a "must do" list for our trip to San Francisco. He was so correct that we went twice during our one week stay. The meat platter is divine and so are the duck confit, beef Wellington with bone marrow, pork chop, and whatever specials they have. This place is a definitely a San Francisco treat!

Perhaps too French?

By sfimporter |

The food here is excellent. The prix fixe menu is a good deal for the money. The downsides? It's crazy noisy and perhaps worse, the wait service is horrendous. Now I get the European things for allowing people to have a table for the whole night - but when your appetizers are long gone and no more food is coming - it's a bit much. We had to ask for our further courses, which seemed to be nowhere on our server's radar. Next time I'm in the neighborhood I'll try down the street at "Seven Hills".

French...so, so

By April C |

My husband has been craving Beef Wellington (thanks to Hell's Kitchen). So I found this place based on reviews on TA. First, the place is quaint, small and the atmosphere is very nice and romantic. However, the music is too loud an inappropriate for the atmosphere. Everyone had to talk louder to be heard making the noise level annoying. I'm only 41 so don't think I'm an old curmudgeon, it was too LOUD! My husband's Welly was ok he said. He wanted the true pate foie gras, it was a mushroom pate. The meat was cooked to his liking. I had the cocotte, their specialty and the pomme frits. My chicken was very good severed with 3 dipping sauces all were asty. The pomme frits were not hot when I got them... a disappointment. I got severe intestinal problems

Wonderful spot away from the crowds

By plusvini |

One of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco. Because we always stay around Union Square when we come to town, it's nice to get away from the crowds to a little neighbourhood gem like this. Service is down to an art. Last time we showed up on a Friday night without a reservation (we'd just come off the plane) but they took good care of us and gave us a complimentary drink while we waited for a table. It's little things like that that make this an extra special dining experience.

Simply fabulous.....so glad we tried it....

By Barbara W |

Loved this little French bistro...such special cuisine and terrific service. Get there early for the best seating and less noise. It is a busy place and well deserved. There is a small bar and even a couple of outside tables. A great selection of wines by the glass and terrific desserts....what more could you want?? Seriously, in a city full of great restaurants this is a standout.

A must when we're in the City

Went early'ish this time and had the Beef Wellington and Duck. Two wonderful selections prepared by Chef Daniel. Of course we topped of the wonderful culinary experience with the Banana Creme Brulle

My first stop every visit to San Francisco

By JeffandEthel |

My wife and I discovered Hyde Street Bistro a couple of years ago, and now we make sure we go there every trip to San Francisco. On our last visit, we literally came straight from the airport to Aurore's charming restaurant. The food and service are outstanding and the value is extraordinary for what can be a very expensive city to dine in. The Cassoulet was as good as you'll find outside of France. The veal chop was to die for. The service was friendly and helpful. We particularly appreciated the knowledgeable help with the wine list and had a great bottle of red Burgundy for under $60. With salads, entrees, dessert and a bottle of wine, we paid less than $200, tax and tip included - tremendous value for the caliber of the food and service. We've recommended Hyde Street Bistro to many friends, and will continue to make it a part of every visit to San Francisco.

Great

My wife and I had dinner there while in sf. It was great. Service was excellent and meal was unbelievable. Cooked just right and delicious. If your in sf I would suggest trying this place. Small but very good. Thank you cocotte. Lil gem.

Flavorful Chicken and Goat Cheese Potato Gratin!

By Official50StatesBy30 |

ood: If you are going to Cocotte for the first time then you have to order the Rotisserie Chicken! It is so flavorful and tasty!!! You can order a 1/2 chicken or full chicken. I will say my petite friend and I ordered a 1/2 chicken to share and we politely fought over the delicious meat and agreed that next time we'd order a whole chicken (it is just that good!). The chicken comes with sauces on the side which I don't think are necessary since the chicken is already so well seasoned for taste. You get a side (or "cocote") when you order a chicken which turns out to be a pretty good deal. The Yukon Potato Gratin with Goat Cheese is incredible and one that I can never pass up! I also am a sucker for their French Fries and aoli sauce. Atmosphere: The restaurant is very small. There is a bar where you can sit and enjoy a drink while you wait for your table. It is very odd because some nights it is packed (no reservations available and not a chance to get a table) and other nights you can get a table no problem. I highly recommend making reservations here. Location: Cocotte is located on Hyde Street which is the same street the cable car runs on. If you are visiting and staying in downtown or Fisherman's Wharf you can easily take the Hyde Street Cable Car here for dinner (just make sure to leave enough time). It is a pretty great way to commute to dinner and you can get off right in front of the restaurant. As a heads up, finding parking around the restaurant is not easy. Take Out: Cocotte offers "Rotisserie To Go" which is there version of take out and it is awesome! You can call ahead and order a chicken and some sides for a great last minute family dinner. It is reasonably priced for a quality takeout dinner for two given how much food you can order for around $30. Heads up that parking is hard to come by in this area and double parking is a big no-no because it blocks the Cable Car tracks. Overall: I give Cocotte a high 4 for the high quality food that is always well prepared and deliciously flavorful.

Pleasant ambience-good food

By Jim W |

Went as guests of local friends. European atmosphere. Service: prompt, attentive and agreeable. Favorable comments about the mussels, duck and salads. My chicken was well-seasoned, slightly under cooked, satisfactory, but I've had better. Wine prices seemed reasonable compared with other restaurants of similar quality. Noticed that they have at least one little alcove ideal for intimate, if not romantic dining. Enjoyed it, but in my estimation, they just barely make it into the "very good" category.

Good French food without being sauced to death

By ldgaff |

This is a small place so going without reservations is at your own risk. The wine list is small and heavily oriented towards France but the wines we selected were all very good. The food was excellent. The portions were not huge so if thats what you want you will be disappoints. Will probably go again sometime.

A Lovely Bistro Off the Beaten Path

By CarolinaKitty |

As New Englanders who love any excuse to visit San Francisco, we're always interested in trying lesser known or formerly visited restaurants. We visited this place when it was Hyde Street Bistro and decided to give it another try. We loved it! It is cozy and friendly and the food is very good. We shared an app of mussels and both agreed, they were among the best we've ever had. Then on to traditional entrees: coq au vin and steak frites, both very good. Shared a tarte tatin for dessert. The wait staff were very helpful and accommodating. Will definitely return here on our next visit to San Francisco.

Amazing dining experience

By ahw502 |

If there were six stars, I would click it! The restaurant is a bit small, but very charming, and very hospitable. The staff was warm and friendly, and the service was grand. Our server educated us on the menu and suggested great wine pairings for each of us. I ordered the Beef Wellington, which came out rich and flaky and perfectly medium rare. The rotisserie chicken was amazing, too. I know what you're thinking... how good can chicken be? This is probably the best rotisserie chicken I've ever had... very tender and perfectly seasoned. The sides were excellent, too. This place may is not a high-fashion trendy French fusion restaurant. Instead, it is straightforward, honest, traditional food, made with care and served with pride. The next time I come, I intend to order the coq au vin. However, I still think about the wellington, so I guess I'll just have to play it by ear.

amazing food, on the pricey side

By kno1218a |

Love the food here! We live right up the street so parking was a non issue. The food was fantastic, must try the banana creme brulee for dessert!! The mains were fantastic as was the wine. For two, with a glass of wine each and one dessert to share it was about 200$. The only thing ambiance wise, is that you sit very close to the other couples.

French trained chefs with Latin flavor

By scottybeck |

Cocotte is a flavorful gastric experience. Food has French techniques coupled with Latin ingredients. Beef Wellington was excellent. There was a stuffed pepper with a flaky pastry shell sided with the best guacamole I’ve ever had! Wines are French and paired well:)

Wonderful food and ambiance

By Emily E |

Recently visited here for dinner with two friends. The food was spectacular. Chicken was moist and well seasoned. We shared a half chicken and two sides, which were also tasty. The butter lettuce salad was one of the best I have had. And the dessert was also incredible - berries with vanilla ice cream and broken-up meringue cookies. This restaurant definitely pushes the items on the menu for sharing -specifically the chicken. So I'm not sure how other "regular" dishes would measure. But if you eat chicken, I would highly recommend it! Beware that the tables at close together and small, so some may ind this uncomfortable. We had early reservations - 6PM- hitch was perfect because the restaurant was busy but not packed.

Came here for the Beef Wellngton, not too bad, not enough pate though. Forget about driving here, just uber it.

Dining in the “Hood”

By lchandler2017 |

Upon recommendation from a new business acquaintance, we went to a favored spot of theirs. The atmosphere was great along with the seating and service. While this is one of those places where you may bring your own wine for a corkage fee, we were happy with the white wine options and the Châteauneuf de pape selected from the wine list. Mussels and soup along with the bread and dinners of chicken and duck were excellent. Great time with new friends. Return is expected.

Fine French fare in a quaint San Francisco bistro

By Yosh S |

This Valentines Day a friend of mine and I decided to go out for French fare. I had made reservations through a concierge service through my AmEx card. Later, I reviewed some of the YELP reviews and got a little concerned. Fortunately, we experienced none of the negative issues that other diners experienced. This holiday, the menu was prix fixe, so the choices were not as many, but the kitchen was well prepared. Service hummed along without any problems and the experience was quite enjoyable. I got up once to use the restroom and was immediately impressed by how small the kitchen and prep areas were. That anyone could prepare high quality French food under such circumstances is truly remarkable. Will have to see how they do when diners are able to order from the menu.

Hidden Gem

By mochmd |

We decided to try this small French restaurant after seeing a review on the local PBS tv station. It is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, and is reasonably priced for SF French cuisine. We had their 2 chicken dishes, roasted half chicken and Coq au Vin, as well as cocottes (side dishes) of sautéed spinach and cauliflower gratin. Everything was excellent! The proprietor also recommended some of their reasonably priced French wines to go with each of our dishes. The only drawback was the tables crowded elbow to elbow, which was reminiscent of eating in Paris at similar neighborhood restaurants!

Good food in a tiny restaurant

By David G |

We visited this tiny restaurant on a weekday evening and were pleased by the quality of the food. The excessive noise level was a significant detraction, however. One of our group has a hearing aid and he was forced to turn it off as the noise level was physically painful. The rest of us found it difficult to keep a conversation going, given the noise level. As the name implies, the menu is primarily chicken, so be prepared for the limited number of other options.

Perfection!

By hiking10 |

Made this restaurant a romantic meal on our last night of a recent vacation to SF. Very glad that we did as was a perfect choice for those who like French cuisine. Our server, the food, and the ambiance were all lovely as well as the 3 courses for $30.00/pp menu. Loved the Goat cheese flan as a starter...melted in your mouth. Calamari Risotto was also terrific. Can't miss with a reservation here. Used a restaurant.com gift certificate which didn't subtract much from the bill, but would have gone even without the gc, no doubt. Will return again and again on future trips to SF.

Beef Wellington was fabulous

By p f |

We visited Cocotte a few months ago and was ready for their Beef Wellington but they had run out by the time our reservation came up and we were seated. This time we made reservations for an earlier dinner time and ordered the Beef Wellington. It was well worth the wait. It we cooked to perfection. That's all I'm going to say ..

cute restaurant, very good main courses

By CAGreens |

The mains we had -- rotisserie chicken and beef wellington -- were very good (the porcini sauce served with the chicken was excellent!) and the cocottes were delicious (esp the cauliflower!). We did not have appetizers because nothing grabbed us, but we ordered an extra cocotte as an appetizer (good choice). Desserts were on the dull side: the molten chocolate cake was pretty flavorless (not very chocolatey at all) and the tarte tatine was mushy but had been overfinished with the blow torch, its topping was too crunchy and sticky, an unpleasant contrast with the soft cake. If you are going to eat dessert calories, they should be excellent and these were not. So concentrate on the mains and cocottes. Wines were fine. Warning: the noise level was unpleasantly high when we were seated at 8:30pm on a Friday, though as the restaurant cleared it improved. Too loud to be romantic or appropriate for a special occasion where chatting is desired. Wish we had called to request one of the two outdoor tables (though who knew it would be warm enough in SF??).

Awesome restaurants

By donkeyJ |

I was 3 nights in San Francisco while on a trip with my husband and went twice to this cozy little restaurant. The food was amazing, and the service excellent. They food us a spot at the bar even though the restaurant was full and we had no reservations on a Saturday night. The restaurant was packed both nights we went there, one of which was a Tuesday night ! Great atmosphere and amazing food - I highly recommend the trout cocotte !

Try it

By PYB22 |

We found this restaurant by chance as we were walking down Hyde Street. A warm and inviting atmosphere - very much a french bistro, from the bookcase that separates the open kitchen from the dining area to the color scheme on the walls. I had escargot and the lamb stew. Both seasoned well. My wife had the cheese souffle with the butter lettuce salad and honey apple cider dressing, which was well balanced. A good selection of wines, although the Bordeaux for $9 a glass (which was one of the cheaper wines) was more than fine. The bread, coupled with a tapenade, was a surprise starter. The hot chocolate cake fondant coupled with a rich vanilla ice cream was a warm finish. Service was attentive without being obsequious. I wish I lived in this neighborhood.

Beef Wellington...Mmmmmm!

By Kimmy1inamil |

If you come here only for the beef Wellington you will not be sorry. Hubby and I had the Foie Gras. He had the duck, I had the beef Wellington. Everything was delicious. There is no parking, better to just Uber it. Also loved the Banana creme brulee, it was too delicious.

Lively French atmosphere and delicious food; excellent wine list good service . Best way to get there is by cable car.

Great Beef Wellington

By AdrockDallas |

Wonderful classics like beef Wellington and coq au vin served in a small romantic space. Food and drink menus are minimal choosing only the best of the best. Bone marrow was a nice complement to our beef. Only drawback was finding parking in this neighborhood which took us and the party joining us roughly 30 minutes each.

Amazing Food

By Sarah V |

Wow. Until the night I went to Cocotte, I had never really tried French cuisine. This restaurant has made me a fan. All the dishes were simple, but absolutely wonderful. Everything was full of flavor, and it was apparent that all the ingredients were extremely fresh. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting (or living in) San Francisco. I will be sure to go there every time I am in the city! Note: be sure to make reservations! The dining area is small and charming, but it also fills up fast!

Prix fixe menu a winner on 6 counts

By Lorinda S |

My choices from the prix fixe menu were butter lettuce salad with pistachio nuts, coq au vin with mushrooms and yukon potato puree, and chocolate cake fondant with vanilla ice cream. All were excellent. My husband chose the other 3 options: french onion soup, cheese soufle with small arugula salad, and banana creme brulee. He was very happy with all of them except he said that the little salad on the side was too salty. The server was O.K. but he was understandably a little rattled because the chef had broken his arm just before the big holidays. But the substitute chef did a great job for us. A Zinfandel wine by the glass was excellent. We like the French atmosphere and music (for the most part).
