Good food great cocktails

By NYC-Chicago |

A local place connected to other restaurants but in a class by itself. The smoked grapefruit bourbon cocktail is perfect and they will create to your specifications. The pizza is more NYC than Chicago thank goodness. And the fish and pasta rival some of the best downtown dining experiences. I only wish they were open for lunch. It was early and They tolerated our little ones and were so kind. But this restaurant is best for adults even though our 2 and 4 year old behaved impeccably. The food will not disappoint and the service is typical of Chicago’s best. I love service in Chicago. We are nearby so this is a gem for us.

Lakeview Italian must try

By DavidB12_13 |

The peach burrata appetizer is very good and the crab pasta dish is great. Extensive wine list. Lively atmosphere

Good not great southern Italian

By Steve F |

Pasta was good. Small portions for price and shocked at a southern Italian restaurant with NO BREAD. The best part of meal was the pulpo appetizer.

New Neighborhood Hot Spot offering fine Italian food

By Linds595 |

Unique Italian food paired with excellent cocktails and wine. Great atmosphere and beautiful bar to hang out in. The seating tends to be over-sized compared to most other Chicago restaurants and we recommend trying to reserve a booth if possible when you call to make reservations. Attentive staff and good management will make this hot spot have staying power. The food is very good. If you have dietary restrictions they offer gluten-free and dairy-free entrees. We would recommend the kale salad, any one of the fun pizza's (served with scissors!), Bucatini Pomodoro, Lobster Perciatelli, Roasted Branzino, and Alaskan Halibut.

A great Addition to the neighborhood and good people too

By Jim H |

Coda opened about four weeks ago and I admit that I am biased because I have been waiting for a high quality addition to the hood. We got it with Coda di Volpe. First, it is a joint venture between Billy Lawless (The Gage and The Dawson) and Ryan O'Donnell (Gemini Bistro), both excellent restaurateurs. Second, it is a block from my house - :) - and third because the food and service are both fantastic. The decor and ambiance are terrific and the place is simply gorgeous and the outdoor patio, which is dog friendly, is really really REALLY nice on a good weather night. I have been seven times in the first four weeks and will be many more. And for those coming to the near north from out of town, you can't go wrong either.

Nice meal, nice atmosphere

By JeffR21 |

This is a nice local Italian food restaurant that is not pricey and has good food. Our server was excellent - my wife always likes to have her silverware replaced with a new course - the food runners could use some more training to be able to answer questions on food they bring out. We'll go back and enjoy the atmosphere and value.

Great Italian restaurant in good shopping area

By Sharkey711 |

Great dinner with friends. Nice glass of wine at the bar before sitting down to each, very busy and we had made reservations. Very good Italian menu and wine list. Enjoyed meal, atmosphere was good and so was service. Would recommend this restaurant , popular neighborhood with lots of shopping opportunities too

Southern Italian? Another cuisine heard from

By Taylor B |

I love Italian restaurants. I love bruschetta, veal scallopine, spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, tiramisu and Branzino, a Mediterranean fish that has made a big splash in this country in the last few years. And there are so many good Italian restaurants in Chicago. And from what I can see, there are more coming. Take Coda Di Volpe, for example. Chef Chris Thompson opened his eatery at 3335 North Southport in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood in the summer of 2016 and it seems to be gaining popularity with every spoonful of gelato. Thompson offers a Southern Italian cuisine, including pizza, steak, pasta and seafood. I'm not a culinary expert--I just know what tastes good--so I don't know the different between Southern and Northern Italian cuisine. But whatever Thompson is doing, he's doing it right. As soon as I noticed roasted Branzino and Osso Buco on the menu, I knew we had come to the right place. My wife and I started by sampling cheese, salumi, mortadella and prosciutto meatballs and baby arugula salad. We passed up marinara and margherita and Salsiccia pizza in favor of roasted Branzino and braised shank Osso Buco, one of my wife's longtime favorites which is a rarity on most menus. Other interesting options included a pistachio crusted 16-ounce pork chop and pan seared snapper. Dessert was a treat, too. I chose chocolate almond mousse cake with coconut sorbet and apricot sauce. My wife couldn't resist the spiced brioche con gelato, banana cognac gelato with chocolate anglaise and toasted pecans. Four stars for chef Chris.

Versatile and Sophisticated for a Neighborhood Venue

By oneillg2017 |

It's tough offering high quality, high experience restaurants in bedroom neighborhoods of a city, where the price expectations are lower. Coda achieves with a varied menu that encourages frequent visits and the room is open and upscale without being discouraging to the casual diner or one who wishes to have a drink or bite at the bar. Delivers on service and cuisine. Try the pasta with lobster. Comes in half and full portion.

Another pretentious italienesque yuppie trap

By travelador |

Great location, great energy, comfortable setting - After seeing the reviews, wanted to check it out... The salads and cooked food (the pork special and steak) were ok - the manes were italian but nothing special. The pizze were TERRIBLE, the crust did not deserve that name: the chew was more appropriate. The ingredients were thrown on the chew and brought some flavor to the ensemble. Our glasses of wine were 1/6th of a bottle at the same price as 1/4th. And the total bill made all four pairs of eyes bleed. Service was good which adds the one the star above terrible. Trendy is ok, as long as you do serve good food for the price you are asking for...

Great neighborhood southern Italian

By gondekp |

We were looking for somewhere to eat prior to the Springsteen concert at Wrigley. We wanted somewhere walking distance but without the pregame / preconcert chaos. This was a great choice. About 3/4 mile, 15-20 minute walk to Wrigley. Very lively atmosphere though it was packed on a Friday night. We started with cocktails and the corn and truffle arancini. Really good starter and the cocktails were very good. And then I had the the spicy malfadine di granchio. Spicy crab pasta with a long wider wavey noodle. This was great. One thing I’ll mention is this is a Southern Italian restaurant and they stick to that and do it very well. They don’t have dishes from all over Italy and some may think Italian restaurants are Italian restaurants. Check the menu first if there maybe something specific you are hoping for. This also goes for the wine. I’m pretty well versed but southern Italian wines and Sicily aren’t in my typical wheel house. I took a shot and ordered a wine. It happened to be $100. I should have done some research first. It didn’t rate very highly and I though it was pretty simple, almost like a red table wine. Not bad but definitely not worthy of the price tag. I would definitely revisit as a legit pre or post game meal. Penny of outdoor seating too.

ANOTHER good Italian Place

By David V |

Chicago is a target-rich environment for Italian food lovers. Coda di Volpe deserves a visit. Servers are attentive and competent —- including good knowledge of the strong wine list. Try one of the eponymous coda di volpe varietal wines. Crisp, fruity and dry white. A nice alternative to Pinot Grigio. The (lovely) wood fired pizza oven serves up tasty thin-crust in a matter of minutes. We had the pizza with buffala plus the sensational house crumbled sausage. My Picky Italian brother in law loved it. Appetizers: meatballs are tender and flavorful with a rich red “gravy” suitable for dipping pizza crust. Octopus is nicely charred, tender and served over an addicting sauté of fingerling potatoes, celery, and olives. Arancini were redolent if melty pecorino. The special beef stew was rich, wine simmered and served over crusty bread. My wife raves about the squash gnocchi. My aforementioned picky, purest Italian brother in law went with the simple spaghetti pomodoro — requesting the addition of a sprinkle of the fennel laden House sausage. Boboloni —- served hot from the oil — with with three sauces serve as a sweet starter or dessert. Gelato is rich but subtle. A hint of cinnamon. Coconut-pineapple ... malted milk. All are rich but lightly flavorful. Creative cocktails, too. The Grapefruit Negroni was bracingly bitter ... deliciously so. A solid ever changing menu ... I must go back!

Much more than a neighborhood Italian restaurant in Lakeview

By smdyl |

Fabulous menu that includes not only authentic Napoli brick oven pizza (they have a certificate from Naples), but many gourmet renditions of old favorites. Attentive, knowledgable service. Upscale. NOT an old fashioned red sauce (red gravy in Chicago parlance) place. Mussels, an excellent chicken dish, fish, -- not just pasta. You will NOT be disappointed.

Awful Food and Avoid the Cocktails

By Wander770035 |

Visited the restaurant on Saturday for dinner and had a really terrible experience! Started with their cocktails and they served us one with Chili Bitters! Unfortunately it was not stirred so almost choked with a burst of Chili flavor! Next we ordered the Grilled Octopus salad ! The Octopus was fine but the salad had red chilly in it and was extremely spicy! The Argula and Prosciutto Pizza was just OK and we had the Tiramisu which was terrible! Really sweet and a frozen variety like you could pick up at a grocery store! The bathrooms were surprisingly dirty with toilet paper all over the floor! The music is loud and the conversation noisy … hard to hear across the table what your partner is saying! Expensive at $ 50 plus per head for a Pizza dinner! Yet another neighborhood restaurant unable to accommodate the Saturday evening crowd!

Great pizza

By George Y |

This is a wonderful Lakeview neighborhood restaurant featuring great Italian cuisine. I really like the Neapolitan style pizzas here. They come unsliced and you cut the pies yourself with pizza scissors. Try the Diavolo.Reasonably priced and very welcoming.

Wonderful Pizza

By JSP |

Ate dinner here for a business meeting and the pizza was fantastic and arrived quickly after we ordered. The staff was very attentive and helpful with the items on the menu. Will definitely come back when in Chicago.

Best Pizza in Chicago

By Al_Whiskey |

This is the best pizza I’ve ever had. It’s Neapolitan Style, the crust was crunchy but perfect. We’ve had 3 different pizzas there and they are all incredible. The Calabrian Chili Oil that they serve with the pizza may be more addicting than the pizza. The service & ambiance are also on point. It’s not the most affordable place but you certainly get your money’s worth

I already am craving the wonderful food at Coda di Volpe & Can't wait to go back!

By Darcy N |

This place is amazing and I already can't wait to go back for another dinner experience! I say experience because the service ( thanks Jack!!) was wonderful and the food is delish! The place is beautiful and there is fun seating inside and on the patio. We ordered the following items: Arancini Primavera, the Chopped Italian Salad, the Bucatini Cacio e Pepe and a Margarita Di Bufalo pizza. There was not a morsel left on any of the plates! Strongly recommend this place!

Great pizza!

By Michele1800 |

We tried two: the Salsiccia with fennel sausage and the Mortadella e Pistachio. (Yep. Pistachios on a pizza. And pistachio cream. It was great.) The pizzas come out as soon as they are ready, which made them even better. No chance for the crust to sog. The wait staff was friendly and helpful and we were on our way to the Mercury Theatre in no time.

Outstanding Restaurant!

By Michael T |

Contemporary, upbeat, neighborhood high end restaurant serving authentic Napoli pizza and other Italian fare Special oven, fresh ingredients, tasty choices. Other food offered unique pairings of ingredients and presentation making for a supremely delicious meal. Staff was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and excellent. Unusual combinations for cocktails, great wine list. Highly recommended!!

Good food - Great dessert!

By italean |

Date night with the hubs - applaud the chef for helping us make my husbands meal lactose free. The bar could not get my drink right so I paid for the ingredients separately and made it myself - which made me a little annoyed. Great citrus salad, and octopus was a thumbs up. The highlight of the meal however was the apple tart - amazing!!! Will give it another go at some point. Nice asset to the neighborhood. I would give it a 3.5 stars if possible.

Overpriced for average

By Jeanette P |

Dined at the bar - attractive and nice location. The grilled octopus dish was tasty but small portioned. The Marguerita pizza with uptick charge for buffalo mozzarella pricy for size, quality average. Had to remind staff to bring drinks we had ordered - small pour on the wine. Busboy was best part of service.

Delicious Pizza & Excellent Service!

By Darcy N |

I was able to enjoy a night out at Coda di Volpe as one of my last meals at a restaurant before Covid - and I am lucky to have the yummy memory! We had wonderful service from Levi - who could not have been more accommodating and charming to all! The salads, appetizers and pizzas were all incredible and I am craving it now just thinking about it! Delish!!

Never Disappoints

By Stephen D |

Excellent food, great drinks, nice atmosphere. A gem! Coda di Volpe is a "go-to" place for me and my wife when we want great food and a nice setting.

Great neighborhood restaurant

By Jean-Pierre B |

WE just moved to the area and have been trying different restaurants and this one is at the top of our list!! We love sitting at the bar and ordering apps, Pizza and a glass of wine or 2!! The Pizza is outstanding.. We have also sat in the dining room and every meal we have had has been outstanding. In the short time that we have lived in our condo, we have been here 4 times..

Great vib

By DavidB12_13 |

We went here last Thursday night. There was a good vib. The pizzas and drink menu didn’t disappoint . The tuna crudo appetizer was the best thing I have had all year.

Good pizza in Chicago

By gaetanolaterza |

There were 4 of us for dinner and we were satisfied with both the food and the service. The place was full of people but the waitress Maria served us quickly and in a friendly and professional manner. The pizzas we ate were excellent. Recommended restaurant.

Modern, Italian and with great service!

By Ann-Sophie |

Great food and service! We celebrated our daughter's graduation and were greeted by personal menus where she was congratulated. Such a nice gesture! We were six people who shared three pizzas and a focaccia, enough! Great food! Drinks and tiramisu were also to your liking! A good choice!

Good food, but...

By Wiltonsjs |

Went here to have dinner with friends who liked the food. The food was actually quite good...very imaginative Southern Italian menu, well prepared...great pizza actually. But, wow was it noisy, sort of like eating in a bowling alley. This was a Thursday night, so maybe earlier in the week it's less noisy...but the owners would do themselves and diners a favor by putting down some carpet to absorb the noise!

Another nice family dinner

By Tony J |

As you can see, I have been here before to enjoy my family dinner. At that time I enjoyed my family dinning outside at one of their sidewalk tables. This time my family party of five had a 6:30 dinner reservation in the pouring rain so we were seated at a nice table inside very close to the main entrance. I started with my usual stolen vespa cocktail for $12. I also enjoyed my stolen vespa the last time. Some other cocktails were $14. I also enjoyed my seafood spiedini special for $32. I ended my dinner with a second stolen vespa. My family also enjoyed their dinners here as usual. We all agreed to return here again for dinner on a nicer sunny day. My total bill was $218 less gratuities. Jaxson and her server in training nicely accommodated our table. We will return here.

Disappointed: The Entrees and Appetizers Were Nothing Special

By TravelGlobeAndLearn |

The food was nothing special. I go to Italy every other year and love the food part of that experience. The four of us had dinner there: 3 appetizers and 4 entrees - not one of us was “impressed”. The prices are not super expensive but definitely not cheap. We all sampled each others food. Universal agreement: There was no “pop” to any of the 7 plates on our table. The service was great. Hence, the 3 stars instead of 2 stars in my review. We saw brick oven style pizzas on other tables that “looked good”. But then, there are so many great pizza places in the city to choose from and we saw this as more of a finer dining opportunity. I won’t be going back. I doubt anyone else in my group will be a repeat either.

Amazing food and ambiance

By Barb H |

This place is outstanding. From the minute you walk in and see the great bar, the windows that open up to the sidewalk, the outside dining....it is not only a feast for your eyes... the food is sensational. The decor is outstanding. We had scrumptious salads, the carrots are amazing, meatballs better than your mom's.... then the pizzas you cut with scissors are just the best!! We didn't have dessert but they looked amazing as well. This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time in Chicago. The food, the service and the entire meal were beyond expectations.

Great place evening during Covid

By DavidB12_13 |

There were no tables on Rezy so we went by and went to their new "Foxhole" takeout window. We were able to get a half pan of focaccia pizza. The margharita type was great. The fortunately we tried the gelatowitch. This was the best dessert I've had in awhile. Strawberry was the favorite.

Amazing place

By NadiaChi2 |

Such a great restaurant, everything is made from scratch everything taste delicious and fresh the service is amazing everyone is so nice and helpful We had a cheese plate that was just divine and the pizza was so so good and we hade the alaskan halibut that was just out if this world fresh and perfectly paired Its a must

Tasty Italian dinner, thoughtful service

By brmusicman |

Met a friend here for dinner on a weeknight. The area, Southport Avenue, is a strong retail and neighborhood corridor, so even on a weeknight it was busy and fun, as was the restaurant. We had a good experience at the restaurant. It's got lovely decor and feels like a hip neighborhood establishment. Service was welcoming and friendly. Cocktails were delicious, and there was a nice wine selection. The menu is elevated Italian, with a heavy dose of seafood, in addition to pastas. We started with a couple of great appetizers. There was then a long delay before the main courses. Our server noticed this proactively, and the manager came over to apologize and offered us a free round of cocktails--that is the way restaurants should handle such things! Our entrees arrived and were perfectly prepared. Overall, a nice experience. I would happily return.

Delicious!

By SeeTheW0rld62 |

This was our first visit and it was great. We all had pizza. I had the Margarita, my husband had the funghi and our daughter had the pizza with mortadella. I love a good Margarita pizza and this one did not disappoint. The fresh basil was prominent and the cheese was good. The tomato sauce was flavorful but not overpowering. The funghi had great mushroom flavor. Our daughter also enjoyed her pizza. We loved the thin crust.

Superb dinner and drinks

By 482JamesS482 |

The food and drinks are delicious, creative, flavorful, and fresh. The service is superb - attentive but not intrusive, never rushing. Our highlights were the Corn & Truffle Arancini, Heirloom Tomato Salad, Casarecce, and Summer Squash Pizza Napoletana. The Delfino Plaza cocktail was the drink winner, and were several after diner amari. The only minor criticisms is the acoustics - it is loud. But well, well worth it!

Great food and environment

By Diane P |

Loved the environment - nice and plentiful outdoor seating in the charming Lakeview neighborhood. The crispy apple salad was delicious and the pizza was great. The crust is thick at the edges (cut it was scissors) and super thin in the middle which is not my favorite but still delicious. The service was at good but I had to laugh when the waitress insisted (in an almost rude way) that I take a sip of water in between tasting two different wines while deciding which glass to get. It’s a glass of wine at a pizza spot not a high end wine competition. Overall great experience!!

Italian Food with Modern Ingredients

By koheve |

My girlfriend and I visited Coda a couple of weeks ago on a Tuesday evening. We love sharing plates/food, and ordered the Bruschetta with Burrata cheese and marmalade! Yes, we ordered it because it was unique, and it was DELICIOUS! We could return, just for that toast. The char on the bread with the ingredients was remarkable. We would have skipped a typical bruschetta with diced/chopped tomatoes. If you see it on the menu (it changes), you must try it. We shared the Citrus Salad too. The added sprinkling of salt on the blood oranges made it sweet. We ended our meal with a pasta, Trombette Trapanese, highly recommended by our server. It was the perfect meal for us that evening. I can't wait for the weather to warm up and dine outside.

Fun place, good food & nice service!

By Darcy N |

I recently visited this restaurant while in Chicago. It is a charming place and the food & service was great. I shared several dishes with my other guests and the pasta was especially terrific -- along with yummy desserts! we were celebrating a birthday and the staff was lovely and helpful to make it a fun night. The manager Mitch was also very welcoming and kind! I will go back to Coda di Volpe!

Special spot

By Gioia011 |

A must in your bucket list! Bully Lawless does not disappoint! With a critical Italian eye and discerning tastebuds I have to say the menu is 5 star!! Great pasta dishes, excellent Neapolitan pizzas and amazing arugula salad! The trombette and pappardelle were home runs! Bully greeted us with a warm welcome however the hostess was less than friendly and actually a negative to the entire experience. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to our 8pm reservation on Sunday evening and while I noticed an open table, instead of seating us, she made us wait.. I've been a concierge for 4&5 star hotels and this was unacceptable. When one goes out to dine, especially in a friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant, be pleasant, smile and welcome your patrons ! Such a turnoff for the beginning of an evening out. Thank you Billy not only for your warm welcome but for creating another great restaurant! Dennis would be a terrific host!!

Very Pleasant Experience

By Scenic70291 |

We really enjoyed this neighborhood restaurant, which offers great food in a casual, family friendly environment. We enjoyed the Ricotta Bruschetta, with Sweet Corn Ravioli and the Salsiccia. I do think a 275% markup on the wine is a little much, but does seem to be the going rate.

Fantastic Gluten-Free Options

By Clay G |

We came here for an early dinner on a Saturday because they have good gluten-free options for my celiac girlfriend. As an appetizer, we split a gluten-free margarita focaccia bread/pizza. I’m sure it could’ve been a meal on its own. My girlfriend enjoyed the gluten-free pasta as well. I had the super diavola pizza. Originally I wasn’t going to get a pizza but I saw that they are nationally renowned and everybody’s pizza around me just looked so good. It was fantastic with a thinner crust and packed full of flavor. The service here was great. They were very attentive and quick to assuage any concerns about gluten cross-contamination. My girlfriend felt very safe eating here and it made for a lovely date night.

Lake view essential

By DavidB12_13 |

They had many great Italian wines. We had pasta although the pizzas looked amazing. The bucatini pasta and squash gnocchi were great. the Napoleta pasta was hardier and perfect for a cold Fall night. The ricotta doughnuts were yummy and perfect way to end the meal

Fine, unusual Italian fare

By Michael Z |

Came here for Sunday night on a lark. Well worth the short drive from downtown. My wife had a very reasonably priced glass of red wine $11; I had a martini with local CH distillery gin, $12. Each was quite good and as Chicago beverage prices go, a $12 martini with excellent gin is relative bargain as is a decent wine for less than $15 a glass. Chicago has great food, but not necessarily bargain prices. Fig based bruschetta and panzanella salad came next and were really wonderful; not usual Italian menu fare. Entrees next and my wife had the blue fin tuna, while I had a generous very spicy nduja pizza. Mine hit the spot and my wife enjoyed her tuna as it avoided the common pitfall of accidentally drying out in the preparation backstage. Both dishes were quite good. For the record I will state that the fine tuna cost a pretty penny and may have been the most expensive item on the menu that day at, $38 while my pizza was $18. But it is not something you see often on Italian menus. So we skipped dessert. Went to their bar instead....you thought that maybe I was done here? No such luck. My wife was curious about the two flavors of the ancient liqueur, Chartreuse, so we approached the young lady behind the bar and her colleague (Joe perhaps?) and peppered them with questions about the hot topic of the day. Joe responded with a small free sample that we enjoyed while his colleague proceeded to make me a Manhattan. Sample done, this sold my wife on the green variety and she got herself a serving neat style. Chartreuse to me is an acquired taste while good Manhattan has medicinal value, in the mental health arena. Anyway, I recommend Coda di Volpe for Italian out of the ordinary.

Dinner

By Nikolai M |

Great variety of dishes, from pizzas to pasta and interesting salads. Nice upscale place for dinner in the neighborhood.

Enjoyable Italian food

By TripPhotographer52 |

I went her with my daughter and her family and the restaurant catered to the young grandchildren with buttered kids pasta and cranberry juice in kids cups with cute straws. The service was excellent. My daughter got a strawberry cocktail and my son-in-law and I got glasses of wine. We ordered a basic pizza with red sauce and mozzarella and the grandkids shared some. The adults also shared an arugula salad, the corn and truffle arancini (delicious) and the Maccheroni e Pece (pasta). The food was very good or better.

The best!

By Bibitybobityboo |

I am just in love with this place. I recommend having a reservation as they usually are busy. My go to items are: Artisanal cheese plate brushetta Margherita Pizza Everything is always amazing!

Lovely selection of small plates, large plates, pizza...

By Gayle M |

We ordered individually for our party of four with various food allergies, which were accommodated thoughtfully. One miscommunication led to a delay of one plate. We were comped a delicious dessert cocktail! Good wine and many cocktail choices. Service outstanding!

Lovely outdoor dining experience!

By DeeGee04 |

We came here to celebrate our daughter's birthday - we were a party of five and wanted to dine outside. We were told that it would be about a 10 minute wait - after about 20 minutes, the host pointed out that the table of six, right next to where we were standing were all paid, done and were not leaving - it was getting a bit annoying and we were told that they would say something soon if they didn't leave but fortunately about 5 min. later, the party left. We were told immediately upon seating that a chef's selection would be sent over for having to wait - it was a beautiful tray of cheeses, sauteed veggies, nuts, grapes - the artisan tray on the menu - highly recommend. Our waiter, Mark was a delight - since that's my husband's name too, he didn't hesitate to call my husband by name adding familiarity to his already pleasing personality. We enjoyed 2 salads amongst our table - the special burrata salad and the caesar - we also enjoyed the chicken diavola (a bit spicy but delicious), a pasta dish and 2 different pizzas. A woman came by after our entrees, who gave us her card and told us to please call her next time we wanted to make a reservation and she would personally take care of us, a gesture much appreciated. We ordered 2 desserts - a pistachio mousse dessert and a panna cotta special dessert - one was on the house for my daughter's b-day but they ended up comp'g both desserts, another gesture we again appreciated. It was a beautiful night dining outside - perfect temp with no breeze. So all in all, given the diverse/unusual menu choices, the fact that the restaurant personnel made it a point to check in with us to tell us numerous times they appreciated our patience, and the pleasing personality of our waiter Mark, we really had a lovely evening.

Delish!

By LizBethob |

Went out for a late lunch on Sunday to Coda. There is a limited menu after brunch stops and dinner begins. With that said, individual pizzas, salad and desserts are available. There were four of us and we all ordered different pizzas. Excellent! Really good crust and toppings and a wonderful salad. Desserts were yummy — try chocolate carrot cake! Service was great and so was the wine. 👍

Great Southport restaurant

By DavidB12_13 |

We went on a Sunday night which made it much easier to get a table. Friday and Saturday night fill fast. Drink program is well done. Pompeii smash was delicious. Always enjoy the Moretti beer on draft. The Arugula salad was well executed. Pizzas and steak are can’t miss dishes. We shared the cheesecake which was the perfect size and it was fantastic

A great new gem to the Southport Corridor

By Kaimada |

I've been watching this place go up the last several weeks anxious to add a real restaurant to the neighborhood vs. another sports bar. Since this new place is tied to Gemini Bistro and The Gage, I figured it would be good. They did not disappoint. All of the food was wonderful and our table received lots of attention from the owner who was onsite making sure it all went well. I would say everything, including the drinks, were fantastic, the right proportion and price point. The waiter was new and struggled to manage a more demanding table to our immediate right. That said, he was friendly, sincere and excited to be there. If you are reading this review close to the time that my group visited, please show up knowing that the team there is learning but are obviously eager to make the restaurant a success. I am hoping this really takes off - the 'hood really needs more places like this!

Very good overall!

By Jurgen P |

We had a great evening, everyone enjoyed the food and wine. They have very good service, with a great atmosphere and equally great food.

Michael's 40th Birthday Celebration

By Dennis S |

After traveling into Southport by train, and "tuning up" @ Gemini, we decided to have dinner here - the best decision of the evening. Fortunately, a table for alfresco dining became available and with help from Melissa we had an evening to remember. The service was impeccable and each dish was delightful - cannot recommend this place more highly, especially if anyone in your group is after a trendy, Italian place on the north side of Chicago.

Neighborhood Joint, Not Touristy

By Lindsay E |

Food is Solid & Never a disappointment. Pizza- Our #2 Fav Neopolitana in the city (sorry Coda) but they have a nice diverse menu for those who don’t want pizza. Weekends they have brunch which you may or may not enjoy (I’m not a brunch fan). They have a great pastry chef which you would not expect of such a destination. I’m not even much of a dessert person but they have jad a few that were good enough that they caused a visit to the restaurant. Comfortable Enviroment for a regular night out, but also nice enough for a celebratory meal.

Sitting outside with a passionfruit spritzer is the best!

By chefsteve |

Our friends live in the neighbourhood--lucky them! Waiter recommended the passionfruit spritzer as less sweet than the Aperol spritzer and strangely enough he was correct! Service perfect, weather perfect, company perfect. Food was very good. We shared the special pizza-great thin crust and spicy peppers. Others had pastas which they enjoyed but I thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully prepared octopus and a divine heirloom tomato salad. Everything was very fresh and simply prepared. Easy to take vegetarians here. Just jealous that I don't live in the neighborhood. Easy to get to from downtown--red line to brown line and few block walk. Definitely will be back.

Beautiful setting to match the great food

By WillWork4Food |

Had heard many great things about this restaurant and was not disappointed by the setting (great view of the pizza oven from the tables), the food (pizzas were great) as well as the great staff. Will need to make it back from brunch sometime as that is getting excellent reviews from friends.

Fantastic meal

By lokimars |

First off let me say we had cancelled the reservation due to what we thought would be a time constraint, I am happy that we called back and made the time to dine here. It is tough road to hoe as an Italian restaurant in Chicago due to the amount that already exist. Coda is a great neighborhood place that won't be that way for long. Once the word gets out about the amazing food and service it will be hard to get a reservation. While enjoying a glass of Italian wine we kept on watching as dish after dish came past our cozy table. We chose to split the heirloom tomato and avocado panzanella salad. Fresh heirloom tomatoes, avocado, cucumber and basil with a balsamic vinaigrette. Truly a summer dish. We both had fresh pasta dishes which excellent their rigatoni Genovese with beef cheeks was great and the Bucatini Arrabiatta had just the right amount of heat. Both dishes were the perfect amount of pasta to sauce ratio. With no room for desert we just looked at the desert menu. Our server told us they have a onsite pastry chef and she had a special Greek yogurt panna cotta. On her highest recommendation we order it. The overwhelming freshness of the berry compote and creaminess of the yogurt was as good of a desert we have had in a long time. Neighborhood place with small town Italian feel. Make the trip.

We will be back!

Great atmosphere. Table was roomy and volume allowed for conversation. The Chicken Diavolo was outstanding. The combination of chile and honey made for a just spicy enough glaze on the super moist chicken. Pizza is neopolitan style and is best eaten with a knife and fork. The Red Arrow cocktail was perfect for a chilly night.

Enjoyable, Fun Dinner

By Traveldanse |

Good place for a social dinner, good service, prices on the higher side, good menu. I was able to try a few different items, and the little sausage appetizers and Margherita and Prosciutto pizzas were excellent. A couple of items were so-so , but for the most part, we really enjoyed the food, and delicious wine. I liked that they cure their own meats and while we enjoyed the charcuterie, the one cut of bacon we found too fatty for our taste. I would eat there again!

Great Pre Cubs Game Meal

By LastFlightOut21 |

Dinner with friends prior to a Cubs game. Short 5 minute Uber ride to the ballpark. Drinks and appetizers were great. Entrees were fantastic. Can't go wrong here in any way!!! Will definitely go back.

Nice Neighborhood Restaurant

By K Pastore |

This is a very charming neighborhood restaurant. We saw lots of people getting pizza, unfortunately I am gluten free and this was not an option. We did enjoy the squash salad, which was delicious and the sea bass that was good but too garlicky and lacking in overall flavor. It is a beautiful place that is full of families.

Easter lunch

By Larry A |

We enjoyed Easter Sunday noon at Coda do Volpe. Busy as it is near Wrigley Field. The service and wait staff took good care of us with 4 adults and 3 children under 9. The kids liked the pizza and the adults had entrees which were excellent.

Great Food

By Courtney W |

Came here for dinner with a group of friends. The food was amazing and came in great portion sizes. Our waitress was super friendly and willing to give honest recommendations!

Celebration dinner

By MJE2013_13 |

Nine of us were celebrating a graduation at this modern italian restaurant. Make reservations well in advance especially for a large group. We were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server was very good. The food is very good from pasta to pizza. Our main complaint was the appetizer portions were small yet very pricey. Especially the grilled octopus which was 17.00 for a few small bites. Not really much on the plate for sharing. Dinner portions were fine and seemed priced reasonably. As a nice touch the waiter brought over two complimentary desserts since we were celebrating an occasion. Nice surprise ending to our meal. The owner came over to chat for a few minutes. Nicely decorated inside, large bar and nice patio. Upscale, don't expect a traditional Italian menu.

Nice meal, comfortable room

By DiDC09 |

On a bright corner overlooking sidewalk tables, the large front bar gives on to a dining room with some cozy banquettes. wood and high upholstery keep the noise down and the lighting is pleasing. We enjoyed friendly and professional service and a good bottle of wine. Standout dishes were the nettle ravioli and a caramel budino dessert.

Tripadvisor does it again!!

By bests3948 |

My wife and I visited based on the Tripadvisor recommendation. What a great experience! Fun atmosphere, outstanding, interesting food (my wife is Italian and a great cook - she was very impressed by the creativity and execution). Some highlights - arancini, pork and prosciutto meatballs, vegetable antipasti, great wine recommendation, and a very interesting take on a Negroni cocktail. What took our experience to another level was the service of Melissa Bunde (Service Manager). She was friendly, very attentive, and extremely knowledgeable about food and drink. Her wine and cocktail recommendations were spot on, and her descriptions/recommendations from the food menu were great. We drove down from Milwaukee, and we will be back!

Outstanding Meal!

By rockclimberchick |

We had heard that Coda di Volpe was good, and were pleasantly surprised that it was great! I had the Bronzino Fish and my husband had the Chicken Diavelo- both were the best preparations of either dish that we have ever had. We look forward to trying the other dishes along with the pasta that looks delicious!

I felt discriminated against as a person of color

By Mayla S |

I felt discriminated against as a person of color... twice. I'm not hyper-sensitive about this kind of stuff. For Pete's sake, I lived in the Deep South for years and I am a registered conservative. Brunch here is great, don't get me wrong. But a few months ago, a few of my friends and I--one African-American and three Asians--walked in for dinner at 5:30. The host looked at us from head to toe, very slowly, and said that we had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table. There were clearly tables available. I let that one go and coughed it up to the tables possibly being reserved. Then this week, at dinner, I went there and stood in front of the host to ask how long the wait for the table was. He and his colleague ignored me even when I said "excuse me" to get their attention. Then, the white couple who had been standing behind me came up to the hosts, who offered that the guests could wait at the bar while waiting for their table. The host got their coats, and came back to the front desk, the same time my white friend came. The host finally turned his head towards me. I asked how long was the wait, to which he said a table won't be ready until 9:30. I would not have minded waiting or not having a table if he just acknowledged my presence right under his nose. I am not new to casual or fine dining... I have dined at some of the Top 50 restaurants in the world and three-Michelin stars all across Europe, Asia and North America. I say these not to brag, but to build credibility on my claim that I am a decently traveled individual with little sensitivity about being surrounded by "nice things." This review is not to say they are racists at Coda, but I am saying I felt like I second-class citizen when I went there twice. For that reason, I personally will not go back there nor recommend any of my friends to go.

Great Brunch!

By Bryan L |

Have been here twice for brunch and the food and cocktails are awesome! It was fun to go with a group so we could sample lots of different things. Everything we tried was wonderful- the scones, the breakfast pizza, and eggs in Purgatory are all fantastic! Can't wait to go back for dinner.

Viva volpe

By Doubleo03 |

Went to this restaurant with some friends had great drinks at the bar first very lively and busy Great looking people The food was so incredible we shared everything The antipasto was so big Pizza and pasta amazing Definitely a place to frequent

Lots Of Potential

By RowerChicago |

The restaurant is beautiful. Nicely appointed with great outside space. The food was fair - with lots of potential. Pizza and entree were way over spiced. Hold back on the chili flakes, please. When the server was asked about specific entree's, he was quick to point out those he did not like. They have two kitchens, one for pizza and other for entree type items. The server warned that because of the two kitchens the meals would not be served at same time. Not good. Work that out.

What a Gem!

By BBS |

Beautiful neighborhood gem. Atmosphere, food, and service outstanding. So glad my daughter in law chose this place. Levi, our server, was great. All of his suggestions were just what we desired in Italian cooking.

Another outstanding experience from Billy Lawless

By F1Rumors |

Those familiar with The Gage will know that they can expect a top quality food experience, accompanied with great wine and beer. They will not be disappointed: the Chef is in complete command of his craft, so expect the food to tick the right boxes. Appetizers were served promptly, at a great temperature and whet the palette for more to come. Main course was cooked almost perfectly, with a great balance of flavour and texture - they delivered well for the price point, which is as good as you can ask. The deserts might be a little steeply priced for what they deliver as an experience, but as an excuse to try the excellent desert wines, they fit the bill nicely. The ambiance was very fine for a Saturday in September - this is an interesting a vibrant neighbourhood, especially with the Cubs and college games on. The restaurant is stylish and comfortable, with service attentive, efficient and effective. It is always good to feel well served without feeling rushed, a nice touch. Strongly recommended, and worth the time it takes to get there, this is a solid fine dining experience.

Downtown style in the neighborhood

By Culture Vulture 60657 |

Large dining room with a high ceiling, half-moon shaped booths for larger parties and tables for 2 and 4 at banquettes along the windows. There's a large bar near the front which was 3-deep at times. Also tables along the side street for fair weather dining. On a Friday night, the patrons included date-night couples, families with small kids, even infants, and older adults. The noise level is boisterous. The menu features pizzas and pastas which is what most people around us were having. We shared fritto misto and a Caesar salad for starters. Then each of us had a pasta dish. Mine was lamb chiusoni which was a little like gnocchi, except green, and flavored with lamb sausage, smoked ricotta, basil, tomato and saffron. There was just a little bit of heat to it. It was quite delicious. The portion was generous; I couldn't finish it. My companion had the crab chili chitarra, also excellent; all of his disappeared. For dessert, we split a ricotta cheesecake, very creamy with a blueberry topping. The menu seems to change frequently. The wine list is interesting, featuring wines of 5 south Italy regions, including some wines made from varietals rescued from extinction. There are also a nice selection of aperitivos and digestivos. Service is brisk and competent. Our waitress checked back at intervals to make sure we were satisfied and had what we needed. It was a pleasant evening. The only negative is the decibel level which makes it hard to carry on a conversation without yelling. While the restaurant seems to be handicapped accessible, the restrooms are down a flight of stairs.

Italian Fine Dining

By Debbie8286 |

The meal was incredible. There was four of us dining. We started with the baked goat cheese, mortadella & prosciutto meatballs and the zucchini blossom appetizers. All three were delicious and cooked to perfection. I hadn't planned on ordering any type of pasta but I'm so glad I changed my mind. The Crab & Uni Fetuccine was to die for, I highly recommend it. And just when you think you are full and can't put another bite in your mouth..out came desert. Pistachio Gelati, Apple Crostata and Cheesecake. If your in the area this is a must visit.

Nice dinner

By Tony J |

This was my first time here. We had a reservation for a party of four at 6:30pm. We were seated outside almost immediately. I started with and enjoyed my classic aperol Spritz for $12. Most of the cocktails here are $12-$14. I also enjoyed my crab squid ink spaghetti for $24. We also enjoyed a bottle of Canicatti Fileno for $52. Leah served our table needs well. My total bill was $286 less gratuities. We will definitely return here again.

Overpriced, mediocre, and with limited selection

By Nojesrom |

My wife and I have eaten here three times and we won't be back. We really wanted to like it since it's so close to where we live, but we've been a bit disappointed with each visit. First of all it's hard to get a reservation because it's so busy. Then when you get there, the menu is limited. I went one evening and really was excited about having a steak - that night there wasn't a SINGLE steak on the entire menu, which I found shocking. I got the small portion pasta instead and it was basically three bites. Laughably small portion. The food isn't bad, but it's overpriced and mediocre, with limited selection and small portions. There are so many good places to go in Chicago - this place really isn't worth it.

Delightful Dining Experience in trendy area

By beekay412 |

While visiting family in Chicago, we selected this restaurant mainly by accident since it was located close to our accommodations. This casual but well designed restaurant prepared excellent food served by an extremely attentive staff. Our group of three shared an appetizer, pasta, and pizza, and splurged on an additional gelato and sorbet for dessert. We enjoyed everything we ordered. Put this restaurant on your list of places to eat in the Lakeview area !!

Great Local Italian Food

By Raphael L |

Great outdoor space food and service last night as a guest at a special Birthday celebration. Look at the photos which should entice your making a reservation and also enjoying tasty fine Italian cuisine. The pizzas that we started with were also delectable.

Excellent pizza, but go for the whole experience!

By FP007 |

Visiting from NY, I'm a bit of a Neapolitan pizza snob. I have to say that Coda di Volpe was excellent. The dough is clearly fresh and made in their imported oven. The sommelier was super helpful with helping us select a Sicilian wine, which I was not familiar with. He helped make a great choice. We also had pasta and the Italian chopped salad. Best part was that we were not rushed through our meal even though they were super busy on a Friday night. Definitely go here!

Excellent Italian in Lake View Neighborhood

By Bruce F |

This is our new go-to spot for Italian food in the near Lakeview area. Our recent visit for dinner confirmed that it offers authentic Italian dishes. Classic Neopolitan thin-crust pizzas come fresh from the wood-fired oven and are delicious. And our pasta was delicious, prepared to perfection. Our server was swift and friendly. An excellent neighborhood restaurant that is quite popular. There is a welcoming bar just off the entrance.

Yummy Yummy meal!

By yazzy13 |

This local space is obviously popular given how busy it was. Service was great and the food was excellent. Don't worry about ordering a pizza here - they are wonderful! Pasta was so delicious as well. A great wine and drink list and a warm, welcoming room make for a wonderful meal.

Dinner

By Craig S |

I found the place to be top notch. The cocktails were excellent, I had a Manhattan and a friend the Negroni. We shared numerous appetizers, all execellent. For my main course, I had the spaghetti with squid and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place.

Terrific Restaurant

By Tourist774789 |

Delicious Food and Great service...I had the veal and egg plant special; others had the sliced steak, pizza, gluten free pasta, swordfish, and squid ink pasta...every one enjoyed their meal. Took reservations and had our table upon arrival...frozen signature cocktails also were great.

Wonderful lunch

By dwg51357 |

We visited for lunch on the recommendation of my son's colleagues. Great recommendation! The restaurant is modern and stylish. Hosts and servers have definitely been trained on how to make guests feel. Because we were going out for dinner later, we decided to make a light lunch, sharing several small plates over a couple of rounds of cocktails. Food was excellent - especially the panzanella, which my wife is still raving about. The cocktail menu is inspired and fun - especially worth trying are the Wind-Up Bird (the cucumber is the kicker!) and the Stolen Vespa (spicy-sweet with smokey mezcal).

Delicious brunch

By Lisa P |

It was too humid to eat outside but we enjoyed a delicious brunch in beautiful surroundings inside. We started with yummy bombolinos and drinks and each had a delightful southern Italian breakfast dish. My fourth time at this restaurant and have never been disappointed! Will definitely return.

Authentic food and welcoming staff.

By Patti S |

Three of us just had the BEST brunch at Coda di Volpe. I was amazed that the Open Face Porchetta Panuzzo arrived with AUTHENTIC porchetta, crispy and thick. I felt like I was back in Palermo! And the ricotta was so smooth and creamy. Our 2 dogs were welcomed with petting and water bowls. But the best part of the whole experience was the wait staff: helpful and warm (waiter: Zanden)...and thank you to the young lady who took our order and made our pups feel so welcome. We WILL be back....often.

Fantastic

By steve |

What an unbelievable experience at Coda Di Volpe in Chicago. Menu was nicely appointed , food was perfectly prepared and the service was second to none. The wait staff was so amazing never missed a single detail. It was so refreshing with most places making customer service excuses post Covid this place is doing things so right. If in the Chicago area do yourself a favor and make sure you pay this place a visit you’ll be so glad you did.

good addition ot the neighbor hood

By islandvisitorChicago |

wonderful addition to Southport! had the meatball appetizer and a great pizza. close to the Southport EL stop. good wine selection ,mostly Italian Budini was excellent for dessert

Finally a restaurant of this caliber in my neighborhood

By Maryannbp |

This is my new favorite restaurant! We went on the second day they were opened and I've been there 5 or 6 times since then. And I'll keep on going. The waitstaff is fantastic and the food delicious. And the atmosphere is comfortable and lively, but not too loud. I find it to be the perfect addition to the Lakeview neighborhood. They've got a great outdoor patio (when weather permits) and the bar area is drawing quite a crowd.

Interesting food

By The Candice |

Attempted a quiet romantic evening out with my boyfriend, but that's not what this place is. If you come here, be prepared to sit amongst others as there is a long booth with tables intermittently dispersed to seat two or four people on a long side wall. The food was interesting. It wasn't the usual Italian food that I'm used to coming from "The Hill" neighborhood in St Louis. Heavy on the chili flakes and pepper, but if you can get past that then the homemade pasta is genuinely good.

Great relaxing experience- late night too

By 3232MT |

Review is for dinner at the bar area; Bar area is open officially until 10:30 in a Saturday with full menu. The area stays open later. Restaurant is very attractive. Bar area is very large with comfortable leather high bar chairs around the bar. Excellent food. Crudo, arancini, and spaghetti highly recommended. Good cocktails including an excellent non- alcoholic option. I've been with a friend as well as by myself before meeting friends out. Very high end relaxing experience in the neighborhood.

Needs a little tweaking, can be a lot better

By efustok |

I was not too impressed with the food here, I hate to say that but there were some real misses....but some hits too...we started with some appetizers...the tuna was good, the kids loved the meatballs, I personally did not try one...but the cream with the bread was by far my absolute favorite thing lol...i could have ate it with everything. I ordered the arugula salad, which was a great size, and pretty good....the maims is where it got ok...the pizzas we ordered were very soggy (cheese & mushroom) and I personally do not like the self cutting options...with kids not safe....they are pretty sharp. The rigatoni al la Norma was very average...not much flavor at all in the sauce...we also had the steak...the tangy flavor was ok too....the broccolini with the chicken was way too burned...the service was good, and the drinks were great as well. Located on a very cozy corner...
