Great food and vibe

By Judy G |

We had dinner there on a weeknight. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was terrific. Salmon was cooked perfectly, duck leg confit was prepared just right, charcuterie board was good and very ample. And desserts were great (creme caramel and chocolate mousse). We will definitely return.

C’est Magnifique!

We had heard of La Buvette Bistro from some good friends who raved about their dinners, especially the duck. So off we went for a special occasion. La Buvette is conveniently located on 7th in San Pedro so there is plenty of street parking. It is a charming and quaint bistro. Thomas the owner gave us a warm greeting. What we loved is the simplicity of the ordering. It featured only a few appetizers, salads, 6 entrees and a couple desserts, but it covered the whole spectrum of foods. The menu even included vegetarian/vegan dishes, so it was clear there was a tremendous amount of thought put into the creation of the dishes which were all fresh, presented beautifully and absolutely delicious. The salad was a colorful work of art with edible flowers. The French onion soup was excellent. The broth was heartily flavored with mushrooms, and the cheeses generously baked on top. My duck dish ala Gascony was splendid with a unique preparation using figs and blue cheese. My wife’s sole meunière was light and very tasty. The special wine was a Cote de Rhône Chat Fou which went splendidly with the duck and fish. The creme brûlée was one of the best we’ve had. Our server Vanessa was so courteous and efficient. You could tell everyone there had pride in their restaurant. La Buvette will be our new “go to” bistro where each meal will indeed be a special occasion.

Lovely, wonderful French restaurant!🌷🍷

Due to the pandemic we had not been out & were hesitant to go. But it was our anniversary & we decided it’s time to go back to one of our very favorites...Compagnon. Now outdoors, the owners Thomas & Loni, have still captured an ambient, romantic feeling and couldn’t be any more accommodating and nice. Of course, the delicious dishes they serve says it all. This time we had their special salad of fresh heirloom & yellow tomatoes, watermelon, creamy Burrata cheese, olive oil & fresh pesto...unbelievable! Both of us opted for the mussels in a fabulous sauce with their crusty bread to dip thru the sauce & frites. They also offered a special Filet Mignon or a fresh Halibut tonight. Their chicken & hangar steak dinners are also excellent. Many more appetizers & salads available. End it with their creamy Creme Brûlée. Decadent! The wine list is superb. All in all it’s still such a wonderful experience!

Romantic, intimate, yet alive!!

Again and again this romantic little restaurant just amazes us! The food is beyond delicious, Thomas & Loni (the owners) are beyond delightful & accommodating. Such a wonderful dining experience. Tonight I had the fresh Branzino. Crispy skin & melt in your mouth fresh fish. My husband had the incredible bouillabaisse. We also split their incredible beet salad. Crème brûlée the best!! Wonderful options for delicious French wines plus more. Definitely one of our most favorite restaurants. Indoor & outdoor dining.

Dinner with Daughter and Husband

Just a small French restaurant in San Pedro, but, what a great place to enjoy a dinner with family. The food and the service were superb. I would highly recommend this establishment if you want great French Cuisine and wine.

A refreshing wine and French food restaurant

By Sailing_Sweetie |

I needed a light flavorful meal because it was late. I found it here with a glass of bourdeau and a tomato mustard tart. Great wine and food selection. French influenced for sure.

Never disappointing and oh so charming….

Once again I must applaud Thomas & Loni Compagnon on their lovely French restaurant in San Pedro. Ambiance great, cuisine amazing!! Tonight we ordered their delicious Roasted Beet Salad with creamy goat cheese & almonds. I opted for the very fresh Branzino, cooked to perfection served with couscous & fresh veggies. My husband had a special on their blackboard…a thick, meaty but succulent filet of Cod served over mashed potatoes. Their Steak & frites plus their Beef Bourguignon are also excellent. Of course, I had to end it with their fabulous crème brûlée which we split. The extensive wine list is superb. Be sure to make a reservation as they get quite busy. Parking isn’t easy so you may need to walk a couple blocks. Outdoor seating is great when it’s warmer. Bon appetite’!

Superbe!

Hubby and I decided to try French food after trying Japanese and Italian restaurants in SP. We called to find a table and settled for the outside table since the weather was nice that day, and the inside was booked solid. We had a lovely petite table by the window to see where we parked our car. The restaurant's lovely. We liked the ambience although we were sitting outside. The streets are not that busy, so dining out would not be a bad idea, with less carbon monoxide. I hope I breathed clean air. April came to greet us and took our order to start. Then Lori came to take over April's task due to more guests making appearances. They tried to juggle as many tables as they could because dinner was the busiest time. The table bread was ok. We ordered a house salad, which was awesome. Mesclun salad includes pickle onion and lovely cherry tomatoes with nice balsamic vinaigrette dressing. For entrees, I had delicious sea bass with wild rice, and Hubby had a pork chop. Entrees up to par! Perfect! Although I don't usually care for a creamy sauce, the little cream sauce underneath my wild rice was tasty. It was the best creamy sauce I've ever had. The sea bass was fresh! Hubby's main course was not wrong either. I'm not lying! We both cleaned up the plates! After we finished our meals, we shared a crème brûlée, yes! We had a lovely dinner here. So, we'll come back here again. Excellent food and service. Merci!

“Champagne? Wine not?”

A cozy place , tucked into an easy walking area of San Pedro. Delightful !atmosphere on a Thursday nite (not too crowded). Also, was an impressive wine list, enjoyed a Rose’ champagne with my meal...yummy beet salad & the Scottish Salmon for the main dish. I felt the service was attentive and friendly, Hope to return soon. Bon Soi! & Merci’

Magnifique!!

Finally a truly authentic French restaurant with about the most delicious cuisine since we were in France! This small, intimate, lovely restaurant nestled in San Pedro is our new favorite & a must to go to. Great wine list, specials of the day & a limited but awesome menu. Owners Thomas & Loni Compagnon cannot be more accommodating or more gracious. We began with the roasted beet salad with Creme Fraiche & Feta cheese...yummy. A special of the day was the Chilean Sea Bass served over fresh potatoes, carrots & zucchini..done to perfection. My spouse ordered the seared Duck Breast served over polenta with a fig reduction..fabulous! Dessert, of course, was the Creme Brûlée done only as the French know how to prepare & delicious. Because it was a birthday celebration we took a nice bottle of Sancerre with us ($15 corkage fee), but next time we will order from their extensive wine list. Do make a reservation. They have nice sofas to sit while waiting for your table. They also offer a joiners table. Bon appetit!

Best cuisine in San Pedro,

By mkelley2 |

Best cuisine in San Pedro, and at a very reasonable price. The Coq au vin was cooked perfectly, and exquisitely seasoned. The French onion soup was incredible; lots of onions, fresh herbs, and not too salty. Roasted beet salad popped with freshness. And, the tomato and mustard tart was divine! Thomas and Loni have created a true gem in Pedro. With the current lockdown, they have the To Go situation dialed in. Let Thomas pick you a nice wine to compliment your meal; you will not be disappointed.

Great new gem in heart of San Pedro

By gpm2010a |

My girlfriend and I had an excellent experience for dinner at La Buvette Wine Bistro. Very tasty food and super friendly service. The chef even came out to personally answer a question I had about spices used on their duck breast, which was delicious. I highly recommend giving this new friendly gem, located in old town San Pedro a try. You won't be disappointed.

Great wine and food.

I wanted a small bite and a great wine. Here is where you can find just that!! Onion soup and a cab franc. Perfect! I found the service excellent and friendly

Best not only in San Pedro, but strong contender for best in entire SouthBay!

By chris p |

As someone who has both grown up in San Pedro and had the opportunity to travel the world tasting the finest in cuisine - I have to say what Thomas and crew have created here is not only a blessing to our little town but a culinary experience on par with the best you'll get anywhere in the world. From the amazing Bordeaux bottle on special, to the delicious, fresh mussels, the Raclette, the seafood - absolutely everything we ordered exceeded our expectations and was truly world class - Michelin class. I'm not exaggerating. The food and service from our server April was prepared and presented with the care you'd receive at any of those establishments. Thank you Thomas, we'll be back. A lot.

Great New Restaurant

By rainshadowsierra |

La Buvette wine Bistro has only been open a few months and already is getting great reviews. Some friends suggested my girlfriend and I check it out. Its in an area of San Pedro that is fast becoming a "hot" area for restaurants. Walking inside we knew it had a great ambience. Thomas, the co owner, (formerly at Trumps, Palos Verdes for years) greeted us and showed us a great table for two. We were there on a Wednesday evening and the place was almost full. Good sign. My lady had a green salad and the duck and thought they were both outstanding. The waitress told us of the specials and mentioned "green peppercorn steak" It was one of the BEST sauces I have ever had but it was not a green peppercorn/Au Poivre sauce. And Thomas later verified that. OK. No big deal. Still great sauce and steak. In all an outstanding evening. Beer and wine only. That's OK. Its a Wine Bistro. Will be go back. Definitely yes!!! Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Love, love this charming bistro!!

By Bebe44 |

Like so many, we have not been to many restaurants since Covid 19 hit. This particular place was a favorite & weathered the storm…thank goodness. The owners, Thomas & Loni Compagnon, are the most charming, hard working & lovely couple who go out of their way to make dinner very special. Ambiance is romantic whether eating indoors or out. This evening one of their specials was Chilean Sea Bass, prepared perfectly & served on a bed of fresh sautéed vegetables…delicious!! We split a delectable roasted beet salad and finished off with their incredible crème brûlée. How can you not in a French restaurant?! All of their entrees are delicious…do try their Beef Bourguignon, the Mussels Mariniere, the unbelievable duck dishes, Chicken Provençal etc. I could go on forever! The wine list is exceptional. Bon Appetit!

New venture for a wonderful man and his wife

By cars0314 |

I knew the owner from experiencing the great drinks he made at Trumps in LA. When word got around that he was opening his own place....MANY of us who knew him when wanted to get out and support him. He is doing an incredible job with food and service. Very friendly, great service and the food was TERRIFIC. Who can resist a tomato tart made from his French mother's recipe? No me. I ordered the Sole Muniere and it was very, very good. They were "out" of reservations until 8:30 the Friday we got there (WITH RESERVATIONS) at 5. That speaks volumes for how much the customers love the food.

A local gem

By ianbeavis |

This is a smallish but very comfortable restaurant serving superb and wine at very reasonable prices. The husband and wife owners are a great team who make you instantly comfortable. The menu and wine list are not huge but just fine with something for everyone. All four of us ordered different starters and entrees. Every dish was a winner. Perfect duck, beef and fish. We went with their wine recommendations and the pairings were perfect. You really need to reserve a table and allow time to find a parking spot as that can be a little tight. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food and service

By SandraAl |

Excellent service and food. We've been here several times and have never been disappointed. My husband had the duck and he's extremely fussy about the way his duck is prepared and it was perfect. I had sea bass which was equally delicious. This restaurant has a very welcoming, small town feel in downtown San Pedro area of L.A.

Nice Spot

By BoboTravlr |

What a great place in downtown San Pedro. Classy and friendly. While the menu is limited the food is well prepared. Service is attentive. The wine list offers a nice selection of French wines and sparklers. Can be a bit noisy with crowds but then that reflects the popularity of the place. A bright spot in a yet to arrive area.

Wonderful dinner!

By Planestrainsnautos |

My wife and I just had one of the best meals we have had in a restaurant in a very long time. This is a very friendly, casual restaurant that serves memorable food (and wine). Everything is made fresh and you can taste the difference. We split a beet salad, which was a good idea because it was large. I was hoping to get the recipe but no dice. My wife then had the Spanish octopus which was to die for, and I had one of the specials, Scottish salmon with lentils, which was perfectly cooked and delicious. If we are ever in town for another cruise, you can be sure we will return.

French Flavors with Big Portions

By BobWE |

Located in downtown Sa Pedro is this new French restaurant (open for three months) that has defined itself as a combination bistro/wine bar and restaurant. The owners have hired a new chef who has added inspiration sauces and seasonal salads to the menu. We were quite surprised by the large portions that were offered for a French restaurant. Parking is in front on the street and is also located in back but, in you park in the back, you will have to walk around the block to enter the main entrance. They open at 5pm. Reservations are recommended. Seating is varied with table that can accompany 2 to six individuals at a single table or you can sit at the bar. We had the small cheese plate initially which was followed by a Mesclun salad, Burrate salad (two of us), and the sole meuniere The cheese plate was outstanding and quite large for a "small" with a number of unique flavors/sauces. The salads were fresh and delicious. The sole was largely portioned and well cooked with fresh green beans and small potatoes. Prices were quite reasonable given the menu. Wine was inexpensive which was surprising. The décor in the establishment is definitely French but also airy and well-lit. Service was outstanding by Jessica. Definitely a place to re-visit.

LOVE!!

This is our favorite spot in San Pedro. Whenever we have date night, we come here. The owner is French and he and his wife work in the restaurant. The food is excellent and they have a really good wine list. During COVID, they had a great pre fixe menu. We cannot wait to come back to dine-in. Definitely the type of place where reservations are highly recommended.

Date Night in a Romantic French Bistro

By Kalahun |

After 25 years away from the LA South Bay finding this gem of a French Bistro close to the piers in San Pedro was terrific. For French restaurants in the South Bay of Los Angeles, I suspect it stands alone. It features a typical and traditional Bistro menu but executed with a slant toward Southern France and even with wisps of Spanish influence. The Chef, I was told, trained in Toulouse and has fashioned his recipes and presentation with that background. There is an excellent selection of little known wines from which the staff can advise the optimum matches. They even sell these bottles at retail prices. My wife greatly enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon; but this was not the more common country stew widely prepared and served. This was a dish of great refinement and presentation, leaning more towards what the U.S. typically sees in an Osso Bucco dish. The vegetables were not over cooked and it had been cooked with a real Burgundy sauce, I would guess, not a heavy gravy. I enjoyed the Escargot appetizer which was definitely a different sort of presentation than the usual snails in their shells with garlic and butter. I had the Duck Confit, properly cooked and served with a selection of baby vegetables. The sauce was appropriate to the dish and part of a beautifully presented plate. We shared a large Chocolate Mousse for dessert. We still had plenty of our Beaujolais to accompany the chocolate. Parking is limited to spaces on the street and given the number of restaurants in the part of town a short walk maybe required. Service was impeccable and overseen by Loni & Thomas, the owners. We definitely plan to return. So far as I could determine, brunch is limited to Sundays 1000-1300.

Amazing Dining in the Port of LA area

By Michael D |

What a wonderful meal. We were not looking for fine dining, or even anything that adventurous after a long flight and just getting our trip off to a start, but, this was easily the finest meal of our entire trip. Wonderful service, great wines, and a menu that did not disappoint. This is definitely a place to go out of the way to enjoy.

Thank you chef Matthew!

By SunnySurreyTraveller |

My niece and I were walking around the neighbourhood and stopped to look at the menu one morning. Matthew saw us and came out to have a chat. It led to us eating there the same evening and we loved all the dishes and the ambience of the restaurant. We had another chat with Matthew after the meal, it was spot on in all respects. Highly recommend a visit.

a five star experience all around.

A fantastic Restaurant, staff, and, of course, food. This restaurant is one of our two top favorites in the South Bay. It's our go-to restaurant for Muscles, and appetizers. Everyone we have brought to the restaurant felt the same way. Our staff suggested this restaurant twice for our office Christmas party and our retirement party. You can't get it any better!!

Compagnon French restaurant, tres bon!

By Peter Y |

We celebrated Mother's Day 2021 with dinner the eve prior to avoid the crowds and rush the next day, and were glad we did. We ate outdoors in perfect early evening conditions and service provided by Mrs. C. was extremely thoughtful and helpful. My wife had the Bouillabaise and I, the Coq au Vin, see attached photo. Both dishes were superb and with a bottle of French white wine, added to an extra-ordinary and wonderful dining experience. The proprietor, Mr. C. checked us often and we assured him that all was good! A terrific French dining experience in San Pedro, what a delight!

Classic french bistro

By Mitchel T |

We were there shortly after La Buvette opened and had an excellent dinner. At this point the menu is limited; the owner, Thomas, said they expect to add more items shortly. The decor is basic bistro, with wood tables and a nice bar. The atmosphere is friendly, with french music playing and they even had An American in Paris playing on the TV in the bar. I had the steak frites, and the steak was well flavored and cooked exactly to order (rare). The frites were nicely seasoned, without overpowering the potato flavor. My wife had a salad and a very good vegetable tart. The wine list avoids the usual mass market bottles and the selections we tried were quite good. I particularly liked the Bordeaux. We look forward to going back as the menu expands.

Craving to return to this wonderful restaurant!

By Bebe44 |

So we were last here in September of 2020. Due to the virus this charming little restaurant & it’s owners, Thomas & Loni, have been through lots of ups & downs...as all businesses have...but they are hard workers, believe in their restaurant (as they should) because the food is excellent!! Still outside for now, but in spite of the chilly temps we were very comfortable (heaters help). Tonight we took another couple, good friends. We split two appetizers...the beet salad & escargots in a puff pastry. Delicious! She had the Chilean Seabass...fabulous! He had the Beef Bourguignon, again excellent. My husband & I had the Duck Confit that took us back to France mentally. Superbly prepared & melted in your mouth. Too full for desserts which we know are wonderful. They have a superb wine list. Allow Thomas or Loni to make suggestions. Cannot wait to return....
