great food. They Have a $16 hot dog that I wanted to see, but no one ordered while I was there. Had crab cakes that were outstanding.

This is a great place for a quiet lunch with a friend. The Bookbinder (red snapper) soup is legendary and very tasty. Great sandwiches. Courteous servers who don't visit too often or rush you along. Plus, it's in The Drake. What's not to love?

After our shock and chagrin at discovering the Cape Cod Room was closed we went over to the Coq D'Or for drinks and snacks. While the prices are a bit steep, we figured it was worth it to go ahead and experience a bit of the "old" Chicago Drake ...which will probably be shut down for progress at some point like the legendary Cape Cod Room. It is a cosy place to get a drink and a snack but I don't know how meals would be. There was a customer next to us who was whining about waiting for his burger and then rudely complained about it not being made to his exacting specifications when it arrived. Our young waiter immediately took care of the issue with grace and dignity, which is often hard to do when dealing with customers who are blow-hards. It is reflective of the professionalism of the waitstaff at Coq D'Or, and we certainly had no complaints. I would suggest you take some time to at least have a drink here, since it will probably eventually disappear like so many other historic places.

Where are the women? I was one of the only two women in this lovely atmosphere. Coq D'Or is charming, warm and just a lovely place to have a drink and or a light meal, which my husband and I enjoyed very much. Simply not sure why this is also not a place where the girls come to catch up after work---just boys--for all you single women, this might work just fine!

Le Coq D’or on the ground floor of The Drake is a wonderful escape from bustling Chicago. Dark intimate and comfortable. The bartenders and wait staff are attentive which is a characteristic that marks the place as somewhere special. Food is excellent. Not a pub or a pretentious soul less bar. Comfortable, classy, intimate. Great place.

We ordered their Cuisine elegance room service which arrived in a paper bag with take out containers and plastic utensils. The salad had no dressing, lobster rolls were super heavy on tarragon and very small. Thankfully upon complaint the $140 bill was cut in half. Not sure if the experience would have been better in the restaurant.

A great spot for a drink or impromptu dinner. With mahogany walls, red leather seating and refined staff, the Coq D’ Or - the Drake Hotel’s Bar which dates back to the prohibition era is a cozy place to sip a well made cocktail. We also had some dinner. The Cesar salad was presented well and included anchovies which is traditionally correct and a favorite of my wife. The Drake burgers were flying out of the kitchen and a clear crowd pleaser. I enjoyed the Bookbinder Red Snapper Soup and the crab cakes which were light on breading and heavy on the crab which is exactly as should be. This is a great place to unwind after a day spent on the miracle mile. It’s a bit tucked away which just adds to the charm. By coincidence we happened to get a drink in the afternoon at the Berghauf - the first place after prohibition to get a drink and then learned that the Coq D’ Or in the Drake was the second place to serve. Funny coincidence and very different types of places but both charming in their own unique ways. Sitting at the western end of the Miracle Mile this is the perfect respite to cap off your day.

This is a very small, very noisy restaurant located in the Drake Hotel. My wife and I went in their for alight bite. Since the place is small, the only open table was next to a group of very loud, very profane, very drunk, and very obnoxious people. It was a wasted meal and left me angry. There are plenty of places to eat, go somewhere else.

On our last day at the Drake Hotel, we had an early dinner here before catching the L out to the airport. The ambiance, decor and menu make you feel like you are in another era. I enjoyed my red snapper soup and my wife enjoyed her lobster roll. We also had beer and Prosecco since it was the last day of our anniversary trip. There was an older lady sitting near us and she must be either a former employee or a an old customer, because she enjoyed reminiscing with the waiter about past times in the lounge. That just added to the ambiance of our visit. This place knows what it is -- it's not trying to be trendy or chic, but rather more of a reliable classic.

We only visited this establishment for drinks - service was OK. Kind of crowded and small, but pretty handy if you are staying at The Drake.

A staple visit during every trip we make to Chicago, Coq d'Or never disappoints, except this time. We found a table Saturday night, there was one woman seemingly working the whole bar and we sat there with only waters brought by a personalty-less helper with no words spoken. We watched the server pass us a couple dozen times, never once looking at us and saying "I'll be right with you, it's a busy night" (or similar). We waited for her to come to our table for 40 minutes and decided just to leave. We returned Sunday night and the same experience began to unfold when we decided to take a couple of seats at the bar. The bartender was exceptional, said and did all the right things and made us feel like we were royalty (which we're not!). So while this review would be a "1" if it hadn't been for the bartender, for his efforts we'd have given a "5" so we fall in between at only a "3". We'll return but if the same server is there, we'll be waiting for a seat at the bar.

Check out the history of this place. We couldn't resist a visit for a drink and ended up having a Drake Burger and sweet potato fries. Our server made the visit delightful. Super busy, noisy, and fun!

It was the worst service we've ever had there, slow and when we finally got our food, it was cold or barely warm

The most beautiful bar you can imagine with dim lighting and beautiful wood paneling with impeccable service. It's an amazing place to relax and have a drink.

This restaurant/bar is on the ground floor in the Drake Hotel. You can order anything on the Drake menu (usually regardless of time because it is a hotel kitchen). My friend and I order Eggs Benedict so often that our waiter friends put the order in when we walk in the door. The Drake is know for it's Bookbinder soup which is a seafood soup and they pour sherry in it at the table. The food at the Drake is excellent in all of their restaurants, but I'll stick to the Coq D'Or (the golden cock). It is such a cozy intimate place. Wonderful to have a quiet conversation. Of course there is usually a small group of men at the bar watching some sport or other on TV and they may give out a whoop once in a while, but there is a separate room if you really want privacy. I like being in the main room (with the bar) to observe the comings and goings. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is the best. Only possible occasional disadvantage is if there is a huge convention in town and the hotel is full. Most of the time, the hotel guests don't even find this place.

Loved it. The old school feel and vibe of this place just oozes history of days gone by. Great drinks as well.

Nestled in the first floor of the opulent Drake Hotel, the Coq d'Or is a true Chicago treasure. It looks like little has changed since the golden days of the 20s, 30s, and 40s, where people dressed to go to dinner and sipped martinis at the elegant bar. Now, it's a more casual place, but it's still done in the grand manner. In the evening, there's cocktail music from the stately Yamaha grand piano in the style of Carle and Cavalero. If you close your eyes, you can just picture the likes of Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, or any other famous singer or star walking into the Coq d'Or for a nite cap. The place is surrounded by solid wood paneling in the tradition of a by-gone era. Hotel guests frequent the bar, but so do those who work in the area and stop in after a rough day at the office for a libation before heading home. The waitstaff is pleasant and even entertaining. They welcome you whether you are dressed to the nine or just off the Mile from shopping. Drinks are great, and if you are hungry, there is food service from the Drake. The lobster roll is awesome - a generous portion of fresh lobster jam-packed into a soft roll. It's a clear winner. So, when in the Windy City, don't pass up the cocktail hour at the Coq d'Or.

My husband and I stayed at The Drake during the Christmas holiday. We ate at the Coq D'Or the first night of our stay. We were seated right away and brought waters. We ordered the flatbread and the crab cakes to share. Both were excellent. They even split the plates up for us on the crab cake order so we could share and have our own plate. Later that night, we went back and sat at the bar to enjoy a cocktail and split the chocolate mouse cake. Delicious! My husbands Negroni and my Manhattan were exceptional!

For years, Chicago's Drake Hotel has been a destination for fine dining. In the 1950s and 1960s, I took dates to the Camillia House. After it closed, I discovered the Cape Cod Room. It closed last December after 83 years. The other day, my wife and I experienced a wonderful lunch at the Coq D'Or, a pub-like restaurant/bar that opened in the basement on the day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933. For openers, they have retained the Cape Cod Room's signature Bookbinder soup. We started with bowls of Bookbinder soup and New England clam chowder. And I couldn't resist a shrimp cocktail. For entrees, my wife chose cod and chips while I passed up the $16 Chicago-style hot dog in favor of the Faroe Island salmon with marbled potatoes. Remember, more fish, less meat. For dessert, we shared a milk chocolate brownie with gelato. I hope when construction of the new restaurants at the Drake Hotel is completed, management will decide to retain the restaurant/bar theme at Coq D'Or. It really is a winning formula.

The service, food & drinks were all great. We just had a hamburger which was good. The cheese plate was excellent and so were the drinks.

My family and a friend went on a Saturday afternoon. Ambience was wonderful and staff very accommodating. The signature Bookbinder soup was very good as well as the Reuben sliders, Italian meats flatbread and New England clam chowder. I had a Sazerac and loved it. It is definitely worth visiting for its history. The reason I didn't give it a 5 was it just didn't wow me.

A very good and diviseve menu options. Excellent food. Wait staff was attentive and offered suggestions.

I have been trying for two weeks to get a reservation at Coq D’or. On their website there is a Reserve a Table link which I’ve tried multiple times waiting to hear results. I called the restaurant number multiple times and no answer. Finally I called the Drake number listed online. This sent me on a goose chase through a call center and finally they supplied a front-desk number. Once I reached a hotel operator who said the restaurant doesn’t take reservations. I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to reach Coq D’or. What happened to the great Drake service we used to know. Please fix your website!

Busy atmosphere but great service and food is delicious. We had drinks and an appetizer and the flat bread appetizer was generous and delicious. We enjoyed the experience.

We come here with visitors to give them a sense of the Drake and old time Chicago. Service is excellent and prices are fine.

Chicago has a lot of different types of great bars. Coq D'Or, which is on the ground floor of Drake Hotel, is a classic classy walnut paneled retreat. Service is impeccable. Water glass is always full. Vibe is upbeat. I had their classic Bookbinder's soup and a Pinot Grigio. Soup came with sherry on the side, crackers and rolls with butter. Live, mellow guitar music in the evening on weekends. Have seen a few kids in the bar, but this is largely an adult place.

A dark, windowless room, particularly overcrowded since it now serves as the hotel's only restaurant. Service was graceless and the prices charged are in no way reflective of the quality or service received. A highly disappointing visit and a great shame as this was once a wonderful bar.

perfect location for a treat after my elizabeth arden facial across the street. scott is a superior server. food good, decor cozy, bar offerings good. menu changes seasonally

Hannah and Bob still to of the best bar people in town, Elegant and fun. Don't miss the one..soup and burgers are good

The Bookbinder soup was very good - nicely seasoned and lots of red snapper. the clam chowder was also tasty. Good service.

Stayed at The Drake Hotel for our anniversary and enjoyed night caps at this historic bar (it was issued the second liquor license in the city after prohibition ended). It was dark and cozy and they had entertainment on the second night.

Came for a light late afternoon snack. If you drink it's probably an interesting bar but the food was only ok. Also given it's in the Drake the prices aren't inexpensive but they aren't outrageous either. Servers were very helpful. Nice place to take a break if you're at that end of Michigan Ave.

My wife and I stopped there a few nights while staying at The Drake. Is is a pleasant place to share a frink or 2.

This is fun place in the Drake Hotel where you can meet people for a meal but I like it for drinks and hors d'oeuvres after work also from time to time has music in the evening.

The Drake Hotel is rich with history and the Coq D’Or is a jewel in it’s crown. It’s old fashioned with original decor, usually busy and fun to people watch as much as it is to enjoy the ambiance. Hamburgers and lobster rolls are fantastic, enough for a nice lunch or dinner. This is a “must experience” spot whether just for a drink or to linger for the evening over a couple of drinks and a meal. Service is ok but you need to be persistent.

Rather enjoyed lunch in this restaurant. It was cold outside and so the New England clam chowder we tried really hit the spot. Service good and not rushed.

We came for a black tie event upstairs for New Year's Eve. Ended up having as good a time in a pre-event drink and appetizer at the bar. This is a very old school bar down below the lobby. Off the main lobby to the left. You might have to ask directions as it is hidden. Arrived at the hotel early, so decided to take a walk down Michigan Ave. It was really cold, so came back to this bar for drinks. Were pleasantly surprised to find a three piece jazz band setting up. We ordered cocktails and fish cake appetizer and decided to stay. Glad we did as the band was excellent. Some of the finest jazz I've heard in Chicago in a decade. Even better than my last few shows at Jazz Showcase. Enjoyed the set and our delicious crab cake. We actually liked this better than our expensive event upstairs later in the evening. Tried to come back later and they closed the bar at 12:30 AM. Can you believe this, on New Year's Eve bar's closing at 12:30 AM. We were very disappointed and hope that Hilton management will consider "bending the rules" in future years and the place started to fill up and could have easily stayed open another hour.

This is a favorite spot for our family--for 40 years. Nestled in the Drake Hotel, it has lovely traditional decor, first class wait staff and food choices that are fool proof. The Bookbinder soup is a favorite as is the Brownie dessert, gooey and warm. Perfect spot for a cold afternoon or evening.

I had a delicious steak - SO good!!!. Dark wood paneled, wainscoting. clean and charming but dark and old school Chicago.

Good bar with nice deep feeling. Comfortable. Not very big, so bar seating is limited - but that makes it better. Basement of the hotel....

We came here for a couple of drinks. To me, it's old school bar entertainment---something that is of your parents generation. Not to say I don't like that vibe, I do, but it was crowded and seemed a little stuffy. A band was playing at first which was fun. Again, old school entertainment. Perhaps if it hadn't been so crowded and the service a tad quicker, I would say I will for sure return. It's a cozy place that reminds me of bars in the 1970's.

Great little hotel bar, with food and an upscale vibe. We sat at the bar and were served by Polo who mixed up some fabulous drinks for us. It was very busy but despite that we had exceptional service. We ordered the Bavarian pretzel to share and it was quite good!

What a wonderful place to spend a Friday night with friends. The Coq D'Or has a great ambience, fabulous drinks...I recommend the Sazarac, and good food...don't miss the Cod and chips. It was packed and definitely the place to be!

After having a decent lunch here we returned for tea, but walked out after being ignored for 15minutes

I can not tell you enough about this wonderful place to have food or cocktails! it is soooo old school....which is a great thing by the way! The food is fantastic and the atmosphere unbelievable. Hanah and Polo are the 2 most wonderful bartenders you will ever meet. By the way if they meet you once they will NEVER forget you! From the time you order your first drink until the last one........they are just fantastic!. You have to come to this establishment and meet the 2 of them. If you do not then shame on you! Rick and Chick think your are of the best that Chicago has to offer!!!

We have made a point, for nearly two decades, to always have cocktails at the Coq d'Or when in Chicago. Why? Yeah, sure, the ambiance harkens back to the glory days of the Magnificent Mile, Da Mayor and unmitigated casual classiness; the food is first class--but the real reason we always stop at the "Golden Cock" (if you are offended by that term, pop "Coq d'Or" into Google Translate) is the service, the people, and specifically, Bob the Bartender. Bob is Old Skool Cool--he knows how to make every cocktail the right way (heavy Bourbon). Nothing fazes Bob, yet he is charming, friendly and attentive. Bob is a Class Act -- one of the Drake Hotel's MVPs! Our crew is looking forward to make the pilgrimage from far away Lake Delton, Wisconsin to regale in the glory and splendor that is Bob!

Great drinks and cozy atmosphere. The food is great too. It is a great place to warm up after a chilly walk in Chicago

You would swear you stepped back into a time warp, or maybe see Humphrey Bogart at the bar. The staff & lighting are very warm & inviting. Classic cocktails & good beer selection make this a winner! Go up to the lobby & see the amazing holiday decor!

We did enjoy the soups and the burgers. The service was so-so and the prices on the higher side; but, it is located in The Drake hotel.

Like the hotel it's located in, this is not inexpensive but as another reviewer says, you only live once. The bartender was a tad snobby-we had just come from the Cubs game and weren't exactly dressed for the scene plus being hot and sweaty, but he finally served us. Fun to sit and drink and watch the fancy folk.

After many visits here (we are neighbors) and prior praises on this site, I took our out of town guests for a 1PM Friday Lunch. After sitting down, we made prompt orders from the new menu, not recognizable by the higher prices (The hotel had recently shut down its famous Cape Cod Room and this was now the hotel's "restaurant" and new items. Happily the Bookbinder soup remained! After ordering, then began the wait and the wait and the wait,. After the maitre'd and the waiter issued "just a minute more" (by now the restaurant's lunch group had left), we finally got our lunch 50 minutes after the order. Very embarrassing after lauding the choice to our guests! Worse, the lost of one of our favorite "across the street" restaurants. I guess the chef quit after the noon crowd.

I had not been to the Coq D'Or in many years. I remembered that the food was rather good and now that they were serving a light dinner I thought I would try it. There were three in our party. When we walked in a waiter told us to sit any were. The room was not full there were 4 waiters behind the bar talking and one or two others walking around we sat down time went by we could not get the attention of any of the waiters after 20 min. we left and went to Rosebud just down the street. I don't know if the food is any good but I can say the service is rotten.

Top notch service! Friends and I stayed for several days at the Drake and found ourselves drawn to this pub every night. This was our second time staying at the Drake and our memories of Coq d'Or drew us back. It is like an old English pub and the vibe is low key. The service staff is the best I’ve ever experienced. Kudos to Vincent, Cristina and Maggie. They are a delight!

Bookbinder soup had no flavor and was lukewarm. Crab cakes were ok but highly priced. Waiter didn't believe me when I said soup had no flavor.

Cozy dark wooded paneling makes this a very inviting place to have cocktails and small plates. Enjoyed Manhattans and Mules. Small plates included Charcuterie, Bookbinder Soup, Lobster Deviled Eggs and Chicago Hot Dog. All were delicious.

Excellent place to relax for a traditional cocktail, and they offer small plates which are excellent. Loved the olive plate.

My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing evening having drinks at the Coq D'Or. The staff was very good and we enjoyed the quiet ambiance of the bar.

Stopped in for a drink while staying at The Drake on a much overdo adult-only long weekend. Had a bit of dessert and a cocktail. The White Russian and the Cosmo were very good, but the real gem was our server, Jose. He was an absolute delight to chat with as he made serving a full room look effortless. We hope the establishment and The Drake are aware of what an asset they have. We meant to have only one...we enjoyed more than one and will likely be back the next two nights for a nightcap primarily because of the service excellence.

My wife and I stopped by the Drake for a couple of drinks at the Coq D'Or. The place was sparsely populated, so we had a seat. We then had the displeasure of experiencing an hour or so of almost comically bad service. We sat waving at passing waiters for fifteen minutes or so before anyone deigned to take an order. My wife had asked for a glass of water, which never arrived. After repeated requests, the waiter told us that the busboys were a little behind, and we could get some water when they caught up. We finished our drinks and asked for the check, which never arrived; finally we had to go up to the bar to ask how much the drinks were--$30 for a glass of wine and a vodka tonic. The whole ordeal took an actual hour! The check never arrived, and we were reduced to leaving cash on the table and fleeing. We didn't take it personally--everyone around us was enjoying similar treatment.

Great service and good variety in late night drink options. Bartenders are friendly and make a good drink at a decent price. We ended our nights in this place at all of our visits to Chicago while staying at the Drake. The atmosphere is also great, darker, calm and classic with comfortable seating.

We went there for dinner. The atmosphere is really nice. The singer with his pianist were amazing. We went for restaurant week but finally the menu was expensive and not attractive at all compare to other restaurant like nomi kitchen and blackbird were everything was amazing but cheap. So we finally choose to eat a la carte. We order a pretzel to share which was little too cooked but still good. And a flarbread with the crab dish. Everything was nice. And we order different cocktail. I really love the atmosphere, the decoration and the reaction of the barman listening our desire. It was a wonderful evening thanks to you.

Just wanted a quick bite and drink. Great atmosphere. Busy Friday night crowd. Onion soup was excellent. Perfect wind down from a busy day.

A very pleasant experience. Good service, and comfortable seating, good drinks, and a noise level allowing conversations.

A wonderful hotel bar. Great for drinks, lunch or late night snacks. Service was very good and helpful.

It was our first night in Chicago and we were staying at the Drake. The winds outside were gusting to 50 mph so we came here simply to avoid outdoors. But we're glad we did. We shared a turkey club sandwich. The turkey portion was generous enough that half a sandwich was fine. We each had soup. My wife selected onion and I had the bookbinder. The bookbinder bowl, served with sherry, was superb and loaded with fish. I would return just for the soup. The cocktails are a bit pricey, as you may expect in an elegant hotel bar. If you have serious drinking in mind, there are dozens of bars around the Drake with more reasonably priced alcohol.

Our experience should be rated in a category between very good and average. It is a old fashioned bar with tables seving better than just ok bar food. Atmosphere could use some updating but then so could the hotel of which it is a part. Drinks were ok as well. Service a bit unhurried.

Classic bar, think 50's cocktail lounge. Piano or small quartet on the weekends, never too loud. VERY GOOD bar staff - classic cocktails and top shelf liquor.

Great historic bR where MARILYN Monroe and Joe DiMaggio carved their initials into the bar. Pricey but you only live once so go and have a drink. Great after a day of shopping!

While downtown for the holidays stopped in for lunch and entire family loved the food. We actually had our wedding reception in the hotel 18yrs ago and have been back from time to time. It’s a comfy location for food and drinks.

We stopped in today for a casual bite and glass of champagne. One of our favorite spots just got better. Not only because the cheesy pull apart bread, crab legs and on-demand and off the menu lobster deviled eggs were fantastic, but also for the over the top service given from our server Scott. He was the best and friendliest and made the experience incredibly enjoyable. It is a must for every Windy City visitor.

This bar/restaurant has an old vibe to it---in the best way! You can slip back in time with the atmosphere and dark red booths. Plain old classic place in the city. The food and drinks are great.

The Cog D'Or is a great place to stop in for a burger and a beer or glass of wine. If you are by yourself sit at the bar. The paneling is beautiful. Very authentic pub like atmosphere. The service is good. The burgers with fries are great.

We always enjoy Coq d Or The food and service is always excellent. We particularly like the clam chowder and fish and chips.

Over all good food and service, but no hostess when you enter so awkward to find help for to go order.

Everything was great for our group and Jezel was very accommodating! Loved the salads, soups, and especially the cocktails!

had a few snacks and drinks here over the 5 days we stayed at the hotel, quiet, nice old wood decor, piano bar and very good staff

The Coq D'or is located in the historic Drake Hotel on Walton Place. The decor in the bar/restaurant is also historic, but with a casual feel. There are a lot of seats in a small area, so you are on top of other diners. We stopped for a glass of wine and a snack on a Saturday afternoon while shopping on Michigan Avenue. Service was pretentious. One person was responsible for clearing tables and serving water and another server took orders. The order taker had no interest in us other than to take our order and leave. We did not feel welcome. We will not be back.

This is a Classic Historically Significant Chicago stop for us whenever we are in town. This legendary bar and lounge opened in 1933 and has maintained an elegant sense of old world charm and class with its wood paneled lounge to its piano bar offering live entertainment Fridays and Saturdays. It is elegant without being stuffy. The staff is excellent, but for us it is the Executive Martini and delicious bar snacks that add so much to a wonderful day in the Windy City. It is a place that makes it too easy to eat, too easy to drink – and such an enjoyment to do too much of both!

Historic bar with attentive bar tenders, great vibe and good food. This is a perfect spot for a drink at any time and they have great food too. There is live music some nights and gets quite busy but never feels crowded or loud.

This place was recommended to us so we gave it a visit, there is nothing standout about this bar, but the drinks were pretty reasonable for a hotel. I'd personally try the other bar at the hotel for a nicer experience

We loved everything about it except the temperature of the trim was a bit chilly. Bob the Bartender was great. Fish Tacos and Cod were tasty.

Stopped by the Drake to check out this old school bar. Upon entry, i instantly fell in love with ambiance of this place, dark, lots of wood, very nice bar. My wife was skeptical and commented that there were no women in the bar. As we moved further into the bar we encountered a lot more women. The clientele of this bar is definitely toward the older crowd. A lot of the patrons appear to live around the area and this is their neighborhood bar. I wish I had a bar like this in my neighborhood. Drinks were great, bartender was awesome. Piano was a classy touch. This is the kind of bar my grandparents probably frequented. Very Cool Classy piece of history.

An old world style hotel bar. When you sit here you can imagine people many generations before you sitting there as well. Excellent cocktails, light snacks to sandwiches, etc. Excellent service. Pricey but worth it!

There are still a few excellent meals to be had, but fewer than before. The main fish dish was excellent one nignt, and then another cook mucked up the accompanying things another night.Often the noise is deafening, but it is otherwise pleasant. I think it shars in the downgrading of the entire hotel.

We were staying at the hotel and arrived late in freezing temperatures so de died to eat in the hotel and so glad we did. The bar had a great atmosphere and we had to wait a few minutes for a table as it was packed. The food was great and served quickly. The was a pianist playing requests which just added to the buzz. Great way to spend our first night in Chicago.

Tucked just inside the Walton St. entrance to the Drake Hotel, this wood paneled eatery (looking like it might have a century ago) exudes both luxury (like a men's club of yore) and comfort - in both decor and food. It's pricey, but no more than you'd expect. We ducked in on a rainy Saturday and ended up spending an hour enjoying our soups and salads - and the atmosphere.

Staying at the Drake, we made this convenient choice. And it was a good choice. We had the crab cakes (2 with lots of crab meat), salad with perfectly cooked salmon and a delightful lobster roll. And started it off with oysters in which they stayed were off the coast of Northern Delaware and they were dang good. The food was outstanding. We simply had tea and water to drink since we had meetings later. They did have a full bar and was a nice lounge. The service was outstanding as well. This was on the pricey side and worth it as everything was top notch and convenient. Enjoy Coq D’or at The Drake!

The décor is vintage Chicago. An intimate hide-away on the ground floor of the Drake Hotel, with dark woods, red leather, classic cocktails and great comfort food. Seems like a lot of locals and regulars dine here.

I wanted to love Coq d’Or at The Drake. So much Chicago history, you can feel it in the mostly unchanged space. It’s small, dark and vintage, with pretty much everything original. Many local personalities, celebrities and politicians have visited those dark booths over the years. If only the walls could talk! I brought my mother for an early, light dinner. Mom ordered the lemon ravioli, which was delicious and unique. Otherwise, the food and service was disappointing. Our drinks were good but never refilled (sat empty half our meal) and the bookbinder soup (historic staple of the hotel) was awful. It tasted like the little bits of flaked fish throughout had washed up on the beach a week earlier and smelled like it too. We shared a piece of their “famous” chocolate cake, which was quite stale and dry, with grocery store bakery quality frosting (cheap and overly sweet). Our waiter was initially friendly, but not very attentive. The bathrooms, which are in the lobby off the street are dirty and not maintained well. Issues aside, this is a rare hotel establishment actually frequented by locals. There’s entertainment on the weekends, which is nice in such a small, intimate space. I would definitely return for cocktails and bar bites, but I would not recommend for a full meal.

I’m here almost every week as CdA is the best bet for business lunches. Guaranteed best service from Roxy; SHE is AMAZING!

Staying at the Drake we wondered in for a drink and came back for the service....well the drinks too. This place fits what the Drake is to a tee which is old school. With a nice piano lounge act in the background and the dark wood ambiance it really transports you to a different time. The service was welcoming and warm and was made to feel like a regular, does three nights in a row make you a regular? The drinks were mixed perfectly there is not one thing I would change with this place. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

Our waiter Scott was so helpful in explaining the bookbinder soup and the addition of the sherry. He was very quick witted with my mother. ('Out of Moscato so I brought you some tequila straight up') Was a very relaxing dinner on our first night in town.

We have lunched at the Coq D'Or on two separate trips to Chicago; it's a perfect little spot to catch a quick bite, and we love the food. We will certainly return.

Home of the 17-dollar martini! But I kid. Plenty of places charge that must in downtown restaurants. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The food is better than most --- Although beware the soggy lobster roll. It was tasty, but it had a soggy bottom.

While staying at The Drake we ate at the Coq D'Or. It was dark, loud and not impressive at all. The food was just ok. If it was cold and raining we would of eaten somewhere else.

This is a pub/restaurant with terrific ambience dating back to Prohibition days. The meal was excellent, good service, had a great night out here.

Staying at the Drake we ate here twice. Although the staff is friendly, the service is very slow- bartender hangs out at "one end of bar" and the two person waitstaff are overworked with each having 8 to 10 tables each. The food is average, nothing that you can't get elsewhere- plus it's pricy. I wish a new contempory restaurant would open up in the old Cape Cod Room, it's still closed after nearly a year. The Drake needs more dining options for it's guests.

When you visit Chicago you need to make the time to stop by the Coq d'Or in the Drake Hotel. The service is wonderful and the staff remembers you and always makes you feel welcomed and at home. Wether you are there with business clients or just out for drinks with friends this place is a must thanks to Scott, the manager, Bernie, Elvis and Jose for providing excellent service!

Went here because of its history notoriety. Nothing special. Very dated with a very stayed clientele. The bartenders were disengaged and bored.

This place has the look and feel of 60 years ago. It's kind of cozy and interesting. A neat different feel from today type of restaurant/bar. Good place to get a sandwich and drink. I had a burger that was excellent! Definitely one of the best tasting burgers I've had.

Stayed at Drake and went here after a long day of walking to keep things simple. Apparently this is a seat yourself but with no sign to indicate to do so kind of restaurant. So we wasted ten minutes waiting to learn that. Then a woman came to the table and brought water and told us someone else would be our server. Waited ten minutes for that person to show up. Then that person gave us menus and never returned. Then the manager came over as he realized we had been sitting with no service for quite awhile. He took our order but never came back and then a 4th person brought the food. So basically, quite a mess. But the food was just fine. No complaints there.

I felt like I stepped back in time at this old school, yet upscale pub with tasty, hearty food and strong, well-made cocktails.

Everyone has their bad night, and last night was Coq D'Or's. The service was painfully slow, and our server wasn't at all attentive. We had no bread plates for bread, I asked if the mushroom rigatoni was vegetarian, and he never even responded (I found out later that it wasn't), the ladies restroom did not have toilet paper or paper towels and even though there seemed to be a manager around it did nothing to speed or improve the service. I doubt if we'll go back, which is disappointing since we use to love coming here.

Located in the Drake Hotel this bar served a super lunch. Spouse had a soup and beet salad she said was very good. I had a Rubin and it was more that good. Lot's of thin sliced corned Beef and well prepared with cheese and a good sauce . Bit pricy $80.00 for lunch and two drinks but the value was there.

My sister and I were in Chicago and had such a late lunch that by the time we were hungry for dinner, we'd missed the window for dinner at many nearby restaurants (or would have been wandering in shortly before they closed which is never fun). We got back to the hotel and were relieved to find that the Coq D'Or is open late for dinner. It was an additional bonus that the place open so late also happened to have refreshing cocktails and delicious food in a great, historic space. The food was great. The portions were huge. Really huge. We had fish & chips, mussels & clam chowder. Yum. The service was attentive all around. It was a very enjoyable experience a hundred steps above what we were expecting to find so late at night. It was also a bonus that we were staying right at The Drake, so it was a quick ride to the elevator to get "home." I highly recommend this place.

Friends suggested we try this place for dinner while staying at the Drake for a few nights. Service was terrible! Actually there was NO service! All of the people sitting in our area agreed that no one was responsible for our tables. Sad for such a historic place!

Great old Chicago feel with live classical music! Drinks and food are a little pricy, but def worth it for the atmosphere and history.

After a long day of planes, trains, and automobiles the lobster roll with Parmesan fries and a cocktail was just what the doctor ordered. I enjoyed the ambiance of the place with is old world style but the food is what will bring me back.

My wife and I had drinks with our friends from Wisconsin at this elegant little restaurant in the Drake Hotel. Really efficient staff and the Bushmills whiskey was also good! We had the New England Clam Chowder in our room at another occasion-really delicious.

Stopped by here while staying at the Drake and grabbed a quick sandwich. I ordered the grilled cheese with turkey and my daughter had the crab cakes. Both were very good. Love the decor of this restaurant.

What great experience at this pub. It is like stepping back into time , as noted this bar was one of the first to open after prohibition. Live music playing even fit the time era. Delicious drinks with attentive staff. Loved every minute of it!

Fun little piano bar/restaurant on the ground floor of the Drake hotel. Very convenient if staying at the Drake with a less pretentious air than I would have expected. The food was very good, had the French onion soup which was delicious. And the Cesar salad was very good. We didn’t eat the wings but saw them come by and they smelled and looked fabulous. Worth the visit while at the Drake

Originally established in 1933 as a bar Coq d'Or (French for "golden cockerel"), after Prohibition was repealed in the US, this restaurant is located on the first floor of The Drake -- a historic hotel on E Walton St of the Gold Coast neighborhood in Chicago. Thanks to the dim-lighted, relaxing bar ambiance, cozy seating areas, and rich wood-and-leather, classic interior decor, the restaurant looks very warm and inviting. As for me, I just walked in The Drake, in search for a restaurant to have a nice lunch -- and I was cordially directed to Coq d'Or, where I was given a polite welcome and offer to take a seat, where I chose to. I sat at the table in front of the historic mural on the wall, and was immediately given the menu, that showed a large variety of meals. A nice lady seating at the opposite table, amiably suggested -- upon my request -- that if I would like something really authentic and not too heavy for lunch, I might enjoy Bookbinder's Red Snapper Soup, that is served with a crystal decanter of sherry. The same suggestion came from a very friendly server Elvis. Intrigued by the name of the soup and the way it is served, I decided to order it. A generous portion of hot Bookbinder's Soup was served very timely and turned out excellent! It is a tomato-and-roux-based soup with red snapper and sherry, the latter can be added to the soup when it is served, thus giving that extra, subtle bite to the taste of the meal: delicious. There's a lot of printed and online info on the unique recipe of the soup, that was originally developed by Samuel Bookbinder -- and immigrant from the Netherlands, who opened his restaurant in 1893 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Later, the soup started to be offered in many other restaurants in the US, including Coq d'Or -- where it was introduced in 1952. The service at Coq d'Or was very attentive and very friendly -- both by Elvis and by Vincente (I think, that was the name of another amiable server). Excellent, enjoyable lunch, wonderful memories of the tasty soup, the cozy restaurant, the amiable lady, the friendly servers and the historic Drake Hotel. Thank you all very much!

Not only is this place historical but it’s a must. The bookbinder soup OUTSTANDING. The presentation of the Giant pretzel quite amusing the mustard sauce that accompanies the pretzel delish. However, the real winner was the wagyu brisket bao it was absolutely over the top delicious. Deshawn our server made our experience absolutely memorable. Thank you. This place should not be missed. We went for lunch.

A great place to grab some drinks in a quiet low light atmosphere. My wife and I staying at the Drake Hotel enjoyed drinks here a couple of time, friendly staff very attentive

First, it is always a treat to go to The Drake...staying at The Drake, shopping at Field's were two family traditions - always. I decided I would revisit Coq D'Or which was a mistake. I heard being alone, unless sitting at the bar, one would get no service. I found that to be true. The waiter came...I ordered an "executive" drink (bourbon and sprite). After sometime I asked another waiter if I could please get it. The order had not been turned in, and eventually the drink came. Then, I had to flag that second waiter down to order a crab cake. I did, and it took forever to come. I finished with the "executive" drink as it arrived...smashed and lukewarm. I even had to ask for my check. The entire experience was disappointing, and it saddens me that a place with such history and a marvelous reputation would now be like this.

Great find-ornate, prohibition era lounge. Rich wood atmosphere, unique signature drinks and decent, reasonable menu.

We visited The Drake since this is where Marilyn Monroe stayed. We loved the Coq D'or and the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and the drinks were wonderful.

Ate there two nights-the second night featured a piano player and singer. I enjoyed it. A dark (nowadays non-smokey) old-fashioned place.

I stood for a good five minutes before someone greeted me or indicated where I could/should sit. There was an elevated sense of "busyness" all around. Lots of hustle and bustle by the waiters, but not sure if I came on a day when some staff didnt make it because it was all very slow. My food arrived a good 30 minutes after I ordered. The food and coffee were good as was the orange juice. Not a bad experience, just not one I would want to repeat.

My husband and I had a delicious lunch with our 4 year old granddaughter and parents. My granddaughter claimed she had the best Shirley Temple ever.

We dined at the Coq D'or twice and both times had the crab cakes and a house salad, the salad was one of the best salads Ive ever had (the house italian was DIVINE!) and crab cakes were to die for. The martini's were spot on. Really nice ambiance, live music everynight was really great and added to the atmosphere and our waitress was lovely. Would highly recommend!

I have fond memories of the venerable Drake hotel that was our family stomping ground to celebrate birthdays, anniversary's and celebrate special occasions at the International Club. For other dining pleasures we would go to the Cape Cod and see Patrick or fall into the Coq d or for cocktails and a sandwich. Keep the memories because that is all gone. We went to Coq dor for dinner and were utterly disappointed . Our wait staff Scott could have cared less if we were there or not. The old executives that were served in brandy snifters had both more volume and panache than what they currently call "executives". While the food was okay,it was not the old Drake menu, where you could order a half sandwich if your choice and bookbinder soup. The place was by in large filled with Hotel guests, who want something easy, and no longer attracts what used to be a vibrant kcal scene seasoned with hotel visitors. Management wake up or this hotel will soon be an even bigger morgue than it currently is.

We worked swing shift for 22 years and the Coq D'or is open until 1:00am on weeknights and 2:00am on Friday and Saturday. The Coq D"or, Seven Treasures in Chinatown (if we felt like driving that far), and Miller's Pub, were our late night spots to go to. We just went over yesterday for lunch. As is with all the small, not in the Mall, restaurants in the area the lunch crowd were people from the neighborhood and a few hotel guests. The Bookbinder's Soup was better than I remembered with a lot of white fish flakes. The Beyond Burger was actually very tasty for a vegetarian option and the Pastrami on marbled rye was almost lean meat and nicely warmed. 2 people with 2 glasses of wine : the tab came to $100.00. But on the Mag Mile what may be $30 per person elsewhere is more likely to be $50 per person. The bar/restaurant has live entertainment on the weekends. They have replaced the spinet piano with a baby grand. This hotel bar/restaurant has liquor license #2 after prohibition.

We were tired from our trip and just wanted a nice relaxing dinner. We found the evening just as we wanted at this restaurant. It was nice we didn't have to leave the hotel to find a nice relaxing atmosphere with good food and service.

We stopped in here for an afternoon break while visiting Chicago . The atmosphere is excellent , with a great historical feel. Service was great , drinks were good and so was the food . Will come here again

Nice speakeasy atmosphere. Great gathering place before an event/dinner. One star deducted because our Waiter was more of a Server. He had no opinions/recommendations on cocktails even when given information on our preferences. Executive Martini is a must try.

Good, strong cocktails and a solid artichoke crap dip. After the main crowd left it was quite enjoyable. It felt like a good little hang out. It is a bit pricey but it was expected. Worthy of a stop in.

This is a classic bar on the ground floor of The Drake. Went there twice during a trip to Chicago. We felt as though we were going back in time. The drinks are excellent! The FEW Rye Manhattan, a signature drink, has a very smooth taste. The bartenders and servers are very friendly and attentive. The 2nd night we decided to eat there as well. The chopped salad was nothing to write home about - except for its price ($16). It was simply a bowl of leaf lettuce (not chopped) with a row of cubed cucumber, a row of cubed chicken, and some sliced cherry tomatoes. The somewhat pricey drinks were well-worth it. The salad - not so much.

This is one of my favorites. The wait staff are very formal. I ordered goat cheese and olives - to die for - the olives were served warn and the cheese was delicious. Always order the Bookbinders soup.

I went to this bar for a birthday drink. After sitting for 10minutes without being greeted, I walked up to a table that had already left and grabbed the discarded menus. It took another 5minutes for a waiter to greet our table and nearly 5 more minutes for a round of 3 beers. The bar was at about 30% capacity. in the meantime, the table with discarded menus was not bussed. I wouldn't go back at all.

This was about the best lobster roll sandwich I've had (and had many, many in Boston, Bar Harbor, etc). Juicy without being watery, perfect bread roll and wonderful service. Would stop if in the area just for the Lobster Roll!

We stopped in for a drink on the way to dinner and were waited on promptly by a knowledgable and attentive bartender. Drinks are pricey but delicious. The bar is a classic in design and decor. Worth a stop!

Excellent craft cocktails. Quiet, relaxing atmosphere with live piano. French onion soup and house specialty soup = delicious. Had the fried chicken sandwich and calamari.

This restaurant is very nice but the service and food are terrible. I also tried some of their craft cocktails and it was terrible as well. Not sure I will come back here again. Maybe for a beer or two but nothing else.

Our drinks in the Coq d'Or were very nice and bar staff were friendly. I am taking this opportunity to reach out once again to The Drake to request the refund of the 300 US dollars incidentals security deposit that I was told would be refunded to me when I checked out of room 330 on Monday, May 13th 2024. Receptionist told me the money would be refunded within 48 hours of checkout. It is now May 21st and I've still to receive the funds. I am very disappointed that Hilton Hotels hold onto guests money that's due to be returned to them for such a long time. For this reason, I will not stay in a Hilton Hotel again and I warn all "international", ie guests from outside USA staying in Drake Chicago that they may incur time issues with any refunds due to them. 😩

Excellent drinks. We didn't have a meal, only good snacks and appetizers. Service was good, but a little slow at times. All were friendly. We really appreciated the ambiance.

I was staying at the Drake and stopped in for lunch. It was classy and very professional. The service was quick and while the wait staff was not overfriendly, they did provide quick service. I did only get two things, the New England clam chowder and the salmon over zucchini, squash and tomatoes in a cream sauce. The soup was outstanding. This is pretty much a staple for me and I get it quite a bit. This was as good as any clam chowder that I have had. The salmon was also original and it tasted good. I thought the cream sauce was just okay. The rest of the meal was very strong. Overall, I enjoyed it all and walked away satisfied, The price was about what I expected. It was a little pricey but I knew eating at the Drake for lunch would be. I was satisfied, the potion was a good size and the food was above average. It was worth it.

Great place to meet in the afternoon, after work, early evening or after dinner. They have a great tasty, unique, and varied bar menu. The bar has a broad variety of every libation imaginable. Service is good, and the bar tenders very personable and accommodating.

Waited one hour for french onion soup (which was delicious), but after waiting one hour entre was served immediately after soup. The option was, don't finish the soup or eat a cold entre. I asked for additional 100 island dressing for my Reuben to wit the waiter responded "there is some on the sandwich". He finally appeared with the request when entre was half eaten. While waiter was absent during the meal, he was engaged and 'johnny on the spot" when check arrived with hopes of a big tip.

We always have a drink at this cozy, comfortable bar on the lower level of the Drake hotel. It feels like a step back in time-- warm and inviting with comfy leather chairs.

Great place to have a drink and listen to live music on the weekends. This bar is old school cool with a great atmosphere for lively conversation and cocktails.

well, to be fair the food was fine, but it took a very long time to get served anything, whether to eat or to drink.

What a classic bar. Great bartender. Didn't get any better. Best part of my brief business overnight stay at the Drake.

My wife and I stopped by for drinks after walking Michigan Ave after dinner. We have been here a number of times and generally enjoy it. This was not one of those times. Drinks are expensive which is ok in a nice environment but paying $12.50 for a not very good Irish Coffee and very slow service (it was crowded but there should be staff for that). I doubt we will return again when downtown Chicago.

I ate here this week with a friend because it was the only restaurant in the Drake hotel that was open. The menu is tiny and the food was quite mediocre in my opinion. This is yet one reason among several why I will never stay at the Drake Hotel.

In the lower level of the famed Drake Hotel this intimate, paneled bar represents what a big city should offer for a high end bar! Highly skilled but stoic bartenders are a pleasant change from the 'personalities' that staff popular gin mills. The limited food selection is prepared perfectly and served by friendly old school wait staff. Bookbinders soup is not to miss!!

Stop in for a quick bit to eat and a couple of cocktails. We slipped into one of there cozy rooms, confortable seats, and a TV to watch a hockey game. We had 2 soups: vegetable (which happen to be cauliflower) and the new england clam chowder. While I am more of a Manhattan cowder, their new england was very good. While cauliflower is not our favorate veggie, the soup was ok. Wait staff was very attentive.

This tiny little resto/bar in the ground level of the Drake is perfect. My family and I had some post dinner drinks here around 9pm. I know our family can be a bit loud, but we found ourselves in a secluded area in the back of the restaurant. The waitstaff was incredibly accommodating and even when there was an uncomfortable situation with another diner they stayed friendly and helpful. We never felt unwanted! I commend the professionalism of this place!

Highly recommended by friends so we went for a Sunday lunch. Great old time comfortable feel to the bar with very friendly and attentive wait staff. We tried the lobster roll, which were actually a mix of lobster and shrimp. The sandwich was definitely overstuffed and tasted good but not great. New England clam chowder was very good. Wine prices were actually quite reasonable considering the location. Overall, this would be our go to bar if we lived in the area.

No real food menu, just appetizers but good drink selection. Pricey, but it is an old historic upscale bar. Great 5 star service, very professional. Nice wood wall look to it, def old style

The Drake is a four diamond hotel with a rich history. This is their bar. It serves food, but frankly not a lot. It is a traditional, dark wood bar, and the guests are mostly tourists. Unfortunately, one of the bartenders has been there a little too long, and he is hard of hearing; as a result, you will be ignored, but it is not personal. Just be persistent.

Street level bar in the Drake Hotel. Very pleasant atmosphere with wood finishes and pub tables. Menu drawn from the Cape Cod Room in the same hotel. Came here for the Bookbinder Soup, a dish stew made with red snapper. Great!

Coq d’Or is a Chicago institution. We live right down the street and come here all the time. The atmosphere is exceptional, cozy, and elegant. The service is next level, especially Polo. Polo has become our buddy and we look forward to coming to the bar and catching up with him. Also, he makes the best drinks! We got married here and all our guests raved about the hotel bar. We always tell out of town guests to come to this bar.

Ate dinner at the bar during a snowstorm. Cold and howling wind outside, warm and delicious inside. Bar staff terrific especially Katia. Great cocktails and good food. Would come here for dinner if staying at any nearby hotel including the Millennium across the street - much better than their in-house restaurant.

Meeting a friend for a drink after a long trip. So calm and pleasant. Comfy chairs, soft lights , nice music and quiet but busy bar. Nice for a woman travelling alone.

The atmosphere of this historical/well-established bar/restaurant is comfy and pleasant. That's the only good thing I can say about it. We had to request refills of water, our waitress only checked back on us once, and all of the food was edible and that's about it. for $100+ check, that just isn't sufficient. I do not recommend this restaurant except for cocktails and maybe burgers.

The Giant Pretzel, the cheesy pull apart bread and my husband loved the specialty cocktail called the Orchard Sour. The vibe of this hotel is wonderful. Definitely will be back.

I stopped by the bar on the ground floor of the Drake later in the evening for a drink and a bite to eat. I had the burger which I thought was delicious. So good that I went back the next night and had it again. It was moderately priced, not too busy, and the staff was very friendly. There were a number of locals there which I think is always a good sign when traveling. I look forward to going back on my next visit.

Very neat bar. Really good food with an impressive list of whiskey. Really good old school service. Felt like we went back in time.

We have often stayed at the Drake Hotel and have eaten at the Cog D'Or. It is a delightful place, located on the ground floor, to listen to jazz and blues music; starting about 10pm. However, there is no hostess, and you kind of realize you need to find a table on your own [the servers usually don't assist]. The service is slow [maybe chronically short staffed?]. However, if you are not in a hurry [I mean, really not in a hurry - sort of European style slow], the drinks are okay, the food not bad, and the entertainment above average [especially after a couple of marini's]. Most customers would be aggravated at the inattention to newly arriving customers [again no hostess to coordinate/organize service]. With the Cape Cod Room closed for renovation, you would think that the Drake would focus on ensuring it's hotel guests have some personal attention at the remaining opening restaurants. I have to admit that I am biased towards the Cog D'Or because of its Jazz/Blues music. I just wish they took service a little more seriously.

After a long day running about the city, our feet were barking and we really didn't want to venture out for dinner. So we decided to give Coq D'Or a try. My husband swears the burger he had here was one of the best burgers he has ever had in his life. Coming from him, Mr. Foodie himself, this is quite compliment and came as a surprise to me. My Lobster roll was pretty awful. Honestly, I can't believe this tasteless recipe made it past the taste testers onto the menu. Wow. But the Calamari Friti made up for my disappointment in the Lobster Roll. Service was okay. It seemed that our party was more of an inconvenience to our waiter. We were seated as a party of eight and after about 20 minutes we had to retrieve menus from surrounding tables where patrons were leaving or had left. We were never actually given any menus. I don't think I will go back there due to the sub-par service we received.

We went to this bar after a concert for a drink and something to eat. It quickly filled up with a wedding party and the people watching was the best. Live band and great atmosphere. Old Chicago.

The staff is wonderful, cocktails generous, and the "bar food" is very tasty. Open late and worth a stop, although it is a bit run-down.
Take a step back in time
Low light, quaint little hidden gem. Makes you feel like you've stepped back to the prohibition era. The drinks don't disappoint. If you are a whiskey drinker, then this is a don't miss-must see location. Had both the “Old” Old Fashioned and the Coq d’Or Manhattan.
