just ok

By krisfj40 |

Cool atmosphere, ok food. Parking was horrible. We had to park in a neighborhood across a busy 4 lane road and play frogger to get across the street. I had higher expectations with the food. It wasn't piping hot when it made it to the table and was just ok.

Just ok..

I had high hopes for this place. From the outside it looks like a classic Tex/Mex Diner. Sadly, the service was terrible and slow. Then the food gave me an upset stomach. After the reading the previous rat comment, this place needs a deep clean. I will not go back.

Friday dinner with friends

By ZenMind58 |

Curra's food is good and quite varied - our group of friends have varied food requirements, and we can all find something to fit our needs from the menu or with simple change requests. The fresh salsas can be quite spicy. This is very much of an "Austin institution" and we often go here when we're in South Austin. In cooler weather, the small outdoor patio is pleasant, despite being close to a busy street. There are awnings to block the sun in the afternoons.

Great margaritas and tex mex!

By davisellu |

We hadn't been here in several years and so were wondering if it was still up to our good memories, and it did! Since we had a slightly large party, we called ahead to see how crowded the place was and found out there was plenty of room outside. On arriving we had a place outside kind of around a corner and it ended up being sort of a private dining area which was great because we had 4 kids along at the end of a busy day. Our server was attentive and very agreeable despite a few mix ups (nothing horrible though). The margaritas here are delicious with lots of lime-- nice and tart! We had frozen, on the rocks, and one with cucumber (refreshing!). The food was still good too-- tacos, beef tips, tamales, etc. All the meat was tender and cooked well with fresh toppings. We got chips, salsa, and guac, and these were good too. You get your choice of beans-- I really like both the black and pinto refried. The salsa was only slightly spicy so the kids tried and liked it too. The guac was chunky and fresh. It's worth a visit!

Tex Mex

I stopped here for dinner with my cousin. We arrived and parking was sparse. We had to park on a side street. We went in and were promptly seated as they weren’t all that busy. We ordered drinks and chips and salsa were brought. The salsa was delightful and moderately spicy. The chips were also fresh. We ordered and I had chili relations. They were stuffed with beef. It was very nice and came with beans. No dessert ordered and my cousin had a vegan dish he liked.

Honey I'm Home

By EmilySmithCannell |

I loved it. Simply put, I thought it was fabulous. We had a round of drinks, drank the salsa out of the bowl, and licked the quest dip off the plates. For balance, I haven't gone to the other top Mexican food spots on Austin so I don't know how it compares. But I will forgo those options every time I'm in Austin. In a place with a lot of outstanding Mexican food, Curras is worth a visit!

Fantastic food, lovely service!

By Lorne_Alexandra |

This place is a gem. Indeed, we all lamented not having a such a restaurant in our neighborhood! We had an amazing brunch. The black beans are incredible! The salsas delicious. If you are looking for a relaxed, welcoming place with great food, this is it!

Best Margarita ever!!!

By MEclasson |

We went here with a group of friends on a Sunday around 11am. The place was packed!! We went just for the avocado margarita so didn't try the food but based on the margarita alone I would say this place is a must see-try in Austin!! Yum, yum, yum!!

Dinner with family and friends

By Lynnmaui |

It has been a while since we visited this restaurant.we have been coming here for 17 yrs.they have redone the interior, making it much brighter and more cheerful. The food is still reasonable and very good.the margaritas are delightful, many favors to choose from. Our waitress was friendly and efficient.

Great mexican

By Ali C |

We went out looking for tex mex in austin during sxsw week, this was quite yummi and we had leftovers for the next day too. We probably should have split something given the portion sizes. We had chips and salsa, they're worth it, the salsa is spicy and yummi, the chips are fantastic, obviously made there light and tasty. We had queso and guac and both were quite good. The entrees were delicious. Service as great, food was authenti, strongly recommend.

Pretty good

By juliehudson1215 |

We liked our dinner here. The avocado margarita was tasty and the salsa choices delicious. The tacos were probably above average too. Overall good but not great.

The Real Deal

By Laura E |

If you want a more authentic Austin Tex-Mex experience, I highly recommend Curra's. Their mole is fantastic and flavorful, and my dude loves the carnitas. They also have a "crema de calabaza" zuccini soup that must be tasted to be believed - yummy hot or cold. Atmosphere is funky and casual.

More Mexican than Texican

By katytudi |

We love Curra's and have eaten there many times, at all hours, for years. It's a local Austin hangout, one of the restaurants well known in Austin, a great place to chill. Excellent margaritas, delicious food, laid-back atmosphere (great wall art by local artist Henry Gonzalez.) I's a very Austin place. Let me tell you what I had tonight-- Juliana's mole on blackened fish enchiladas. Write that down. So much more than you thought possible. Fragrant rich mole over spicy fish wrapped in tortillas. Should be a signature dish. Enmolades de la Gata ;) [If you choose mole on enchiladas, you get to choose your filling.] Seriously, everything on the menu is good. & Good is very good. In fact, it's great.

Great food and great service.

By EBraddock |

The owner said hello to us to ask if everything was alright. It was great. Had a business lunch. It was quiet enough to have conversation. The food was delicious, really good margaritas and warm chips with good salsa to start with.

Pleasantly surprised

By Melissa P |

Working nearby and needed lunch close to office. Tried Curra's and was very pleasantly surprised. Had the grilled tilapia tacos and they were delish! Chips and salsa were especially good, very fresh. Parking is pretty dicey, but you might luck out as I did. The exterior doesn't seem like much, but it was a good move on our part. Will return to Curra's again.

Outstanding and authentic

By Dennis P |

Curra’s was recommended by friends when we asked about a local authentic Mexican restaurant. We had s late dinner—tacos all pastor for me and cheese enchiladas for my friend. Superb tastes and large portions. The charro beans were delicious! Highly recommend!

Excellent food and service

By 30090Laura_S |

Everything we had was excellent. The child releno was great along with the salsas. Excellent service and food.

Great Diner in South Austin.

By Sara76502 |

Wonderful breakfast place with a large menu and the best Oaxaca Mexican coffee. Many vegetarian dishes on the menu including tamales.

Avocado margaritas

By Sytra Phelen |

That's all I have to say, it's a thing, it's life changing, you truly haven't lived until you've had an avocado margarita!

Good food, but charging extra for charro beans and salad dressing on top of already high prices es no bueno

By Tom B |

The menu says choice of beans, but they charge $.99 for charro beans. And the chipotle ranch salad dressing is pretty disgusting and also $.99 extra. I won’t be back.

Text Mex Representatives!

By ariesgal |

Went with friends and we ordered many different items and they were all good. I am most impressed with their fresh tortilla chips and salsa sampler with 9 plus types of salsa. Their Mexican coffee was strong, smooth, and fragranced. Had 3 cups after a late late night and was able to kept me going for another late night!? A friend tried the alcoholic coffee with brandy and Kahlua and it so hot and smooth and nice. The place has the most interesting murals as well. We all had a blast there!

Always good

By JrMushroom |

I've been coming here for a long time. Really, just a great place for any meal. Great tacos, breakfast items and assorted Mexican specialties. Full bar for when you are drinking, but also outstanding coffee when you are brunching. They have great Borracha sauce. Plus Machacado, which isn't easy to find around here.

Pretty good!

By Patricia H |

This restaurant had very unique options of food to try. We tried the Avocado margaritas that everyone raved about. We really enjoyed the smooth consistency. We also had the salsa sampler to start with, it was full of very different flavors! I had the blackened fish tacos which were delicious! I could tell that the corn tortillas were homemade! That's very rare to find. My husband had the chicken mole. He is still talking about it days later.

Dinner with my Daughter at her fav Restaurant

By Bill Jenks |

I was in town for business and took my daughter and her BF to dinner at her favorite restaurant. There were four of us and we each ordered something different and we all tried each others food. Everything was great! My daughter told me the have breakfast also and it is the best. The service was good and the prices were in line or maybe a little lower than comparable places considering the quality of the food. It was a Wednesday night and they had a full house but the food came out quicker than expected. I will go back the next time I am in Austin.

Still awesome!

By rgudinov |

Real Mexican food and drinks. Great environment, fantastic staff. Try the best margaritas ever in town! You have to try the loaded motuleños eggs!

Great, Authentic Tex-Mex

By heybrula |

A must visit. Margarita"s are excellent, Food is outstanding depending on what you order, Enchiladas with Chicken with Mole sauce is absolutely wonderful. Real authentic mole sauce. Order the plate with several different salsas. Hot and delicious. Best Flan in town, again very authentic Service is very friendly, very accommodating.

Good food, bad policy

By sundvl76 |

We've been Curra's regulars for many years. We started out eating at their Burnet Road location and also visited the Parmer Lane location a couple of times. Both closed, so we started making the long (43 miles, one way) trip to the Oltorf location when the traffic on MoPac would allow it. We always enjoyed the food and atmosphere (the chicken mole enchiladas are the best mole I've had anywhere), and the prices have been very reasonable. On our last visit, a couple of months ago, we found that Curra's has adopted the airline-method on their menu: They CHARGE for a bowl of chips now. That's just wrong, folks! In addition, they have an upcharge for charro beans in lieu of refried or black beans. I don't care how good your food is, a Tex-Mex joint that charges for chips is not going to get my business.

Very yummy! Friendly service!

By Debra W |

We came the morning of UT graduation and it was packed! I hadn't been here in years but it is as yummy as ever! I had the Migas (added shrooms & cheese) and my hubby had the Tacos al Pastor (his favorite Mexican dish). We loved the homemade tortillas - both corn and flour. The corn tortillas were huge and didn't fall apart. My hubby liked the al Pastor, could tell they weren't just "flavored" with al Pastor seasoning (it's made on a rotisserie), but would have preferred it like it is in Mexico, more "moist" (or greasy)! It's difficult to find al Pastor made on a rotisserie or spit. We live in San Antonio, and you rarely find it there. Service was very friendly, but a bit slow because of larger parties (probably due to graduation). Glad we came! Next time we'll try their famous tamales!

Summer Dinner

By 98629Mark |

6 people foe dinner, 2 children. Good Quesco. We had margaritas, which were refreshing. 2 of use had the Carnitas dinner, and they were the best carnitas I have ever had. Tres Leches cake was very good.

Average but not great

By MomtoPDandL |

Curra's Grill was referred to us by our local Uber driver so we decided to try it. Curra's is more of a local restaurant instead of a tourist restaurant which is what we were looking for. The food was good, I would not say great but good. The price for what we received was very reasonable. The avocado margarita was very highly rated on the website we looked at but out of four people in our group no one like it. We did however like their house margarita, it was very good.

Interesting Experience

By Ramona R |

We had dinner here one evening during our visit to Austin, based on the recommendation of a friend. Not the friendliest wait person and not a very welcoming feeling. We chose to eat inside because it was hot and the parking lot was dirty and a little scary. The cheese enchiladas were adequate and filling but we didn't receive any chips and salsa; no beverage refills were offered on our tea and coffee. The waitress was MIA for most of our visit. For the cost, I don't know that we'd make an effort to return here on future visits to Austin.

Great avocado margaritas!

By PigeonBlue |

This place was so much better than it looks at first glance, and the avocado margaritas were so much better than they sounded! I was lucky enough to taken here by a colleague while on business in Austin and had a great time: the service was excellent, the food delicious and we are total converts to the avocado margaritas! A great choice for a relaxed evening with friends - will definitely be back.

Average food, good margaritas.

By agg2011 |

We visited Curras which had come well recommended. They have inside and outside seating. We chose to sit outside as it was a reasonably nice evening. The restaurant was less than half full when we arrived. The table outside was not clean and had remnants from the prior guests. Not a great start. After a relatively long wait, a waiter took our drink order and upon his return we finally ordered food. They brought chips and we ordere guacamole while we waited for foods. The food took so long they offered us extra chips and guacamole 3 times. The appetizer arrived about 40 minutes after the initial order. At this point we had so many chips and guacamole that I was hard,y hungry anymore. Anyway... We ordered the Queso Flameado which is melted cheese in a cast iron pan with Rajas and Chorizo. The appetizer was quite good and reminiscent of Queso Fundido which I used to get when traveling in Mexico. The entrees arrived about 10 minutes after the appetizer. Which was fine. I had the fish tacos which were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. My friends plates were also good but nothing to really write home about. Frankly my tacos from Torchy's the night before were better and served warm and in a timely fashion. There really was no reason for the delays to take our orders and serve the food. The restaurant was hardly busy and there were plenty of staff on hand. There are lots of choices when traveling and eating in Austin. This one for me did not impress.

Decent Mexican food

By Ron B |

I eat at Curra's pretty often, at least once a month. The food is decent, although overpriced. I like the Chile Colorado and the quesadillas. The service varies. Sometimes they're attentive and quick, sometimes they're not. The dining areas, both outside and inside, are quite crammed and can be noisy-- nearly impossible to carry on a conversation. They underwent a minir renovation recently. The tables are new, blue, and embedded on their tops are a myriad envelope-sized advertisements. You look at your food - you must look at their darn ads. Quite annoying.

Good Mexican Food

By Scott S |

I ate here with my family (wife and two kids ages 7 & 12). Food was very good and pricey for Mexican food, but was very good. Most Mexican food is kinda blah, but this was really good. The Chips and Salsa were both fresh and very good. My wife had beef tacos which she liked a lot. I had the Pastor Enchiladas (pork tips with pineapple and seasoning) which was amazing. I never thought I would like pineapple in an enchilada, but it did not disappoint. My daughter had two beef enchiladas which she liked. My son had the cheese enchiladas off of the kids menu, he also enjoyed. So why only 4 stars you ask? Well, when we arrived we were asked whether we would like indoor or outdoor seating, to which we replied "outdoor please". We were on our way out to the patio, and then we were stopped by a manager and told that there was no seating available (when there clearly was a table big enough for the four of us). The manager told us the wait would be 30-40min. My wife, understanding what was being said in Spanish (between the waitstaff and manager), replied that we will just go somewhere else to eat then. Amazingly, we were escorted to the outdoor patio to the empty table. Well, my wife said that the manager didn't want us to have the table since he could seat more than 4 people at that table (likely meaning he could make more $$$$) . I guess this is normal in Mexico, but seriously? Funny part is, we were seated, ate our meal, and exited the facility while the table to the right of us, and the left of us (total of 5 people occupying space that could have sat 10) were still there chatting away and not ordering anything the entire time we were there. I guess our $50 food bill wasn't enough for them....maybe I should have bought some margaritas....

Bad service, low quality and skimpy servings

By WinthropJQuiggy |

This place has a high opinion of itself, to say the least. Big marquee emblazoned on the front "The Mother of All 'Mex"". Not even. Firstly, they had no barbacoa. Every Mexican restaurant I've ever been to has barbacoa. Except this one. They had no chicharrones, either, but not all do, so that was acceptable. The only one of my three favorites they had was pastor. I opted for two machacado tacos to go with the one pastor. Now, everywhere I've ever been, a machacado taco is meat with eggs and cheese and pepper and stuff. I got my machacado with just meat, and very little of that. The real problem I had was with service. It took forever for my food to arrive and even then, I got the pastor taco on a plate by itself. The waiter said the machacado would be out shortly. "Shortly" as it turned out was sometime after I had completely .consumed my first taco. I got refills on coffee only after my cup was empty. The waiter never really checked on me, and only bothered to ask me if I was enjoying the food AFTER I had eaten. (It should be done a lot earlier in the meal, IMHO...) I will almost certainly not be going back.

Breakfast

By Sara76502 |

One of my favorite resturants in Austin. Love the breakfast Migas and wonderful coffee especially on cold days.

Not to mention...

By Dillon M |

The waiting service was pretty normal, not excellent by any means, but nothing detrimental. We sat on the outdoor patio and the surrounding atmosphere was very lively and fun, so although we waited a while for the food, and drinks, we didn't seem to. Chips salsa and queso were pretty darn good, and the group I was with all seemed very impressed with their entrees. Needless to mention, the avocado margaritas were to die for. I'm going back today (two days later) to try them again.

Delicious

Visiting Texas for the first time. A friend recommended Curra’s. The food was fresh and flavorful. The Avocado Margarita was unique and delicious. Great atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice.

updates and upgrades

By stevieweavie2013 |

Curras has always had outstanding breakfast tacos, but the restaurant has updated the decor. The murals on the walls are works of art. The ceiling has hammered tin, and the booths are recovered. Nice updates.

Rude and unhelpful

By Peggy R |

My husband and I courted in this restaurant 15 years ago. We have since moved out of state. On a recent visit back to the Austin area in early June 2014, we were staying a hotel about 1 mile away from Curra's. Since they open early for breakfast and we knew they had a patio, we called @8:30am to ask if they accept dogs on the patio since we were traveling with our 35 lb girl. The person on the phone said "yes." We walked 1 mile to get there. We were told to pick any table on the patio (9:30am and 2 tables taken out there) so we did. About 15 minutes later a very rude server came out and said awkwardly and with no warmth or regret in her voice, "You're gonna have to leave." We asked "Why?" And she said abruptly "WE DON'T ALLOW DOGS ON OUR PATIO!" She used a tone of voice that inferred we should have known better - like she was our mother or something. "We were told we could bring our dog. We called ahead of time," we replied. She retorted, "No one here would have told you we allow dogs." We got up immediately and I asked for the manager who was behind the counter inside. There were 2 patrons at the counter and a few scattered tables taken in the main room. They were NOT crowded. I told him emphatically and calmly that he should make sure that his entire staff knows that they don't allow pets on the patio. His answer verbatim to me was "We do. Lap dogs." I retorted "We were not told the specifics. The man we spoke to just simply said "yes" when we asked if you allow dogs on the patio. My husband and I have been excited to rekindle and reminisce because we courted here at your restaurant 15 years ago." He then turned his back on me without a word, poured a cup of coffee for one of the patrons seated at the bar and offered no other commentary. No apology, no - "Can I get you something to go?" no exception to the rule since it wasn't crowded. Just his back. Which we won't ever be.

One of the best Chili Rellenos ever

By Larry G |

First time eating at Curra's Grill. I left very satisfied and happy. A great - and huge, chili rellino with an exc.ellent avocado sauce, my choice of among about 1/2 dozen offered. Excellent and friendly service. Highly recommended.

No. Just don't.

By Katy T |

Less than mediocre. Traveling to Texas, I really wanted some great Mexican food. Our first stop from the airport was Curra's, and I'm really sad it was our first Texas meal. The carnitas was super dry, the enchilada sauce was nearly inedible it was so spicy (our waitress informed me nothing was spicy). Blech.

Go for the Avocado Margarita & bring ear-plugs!

By DCO2006 |

The avocado margarita is worth the journey over to this location that time & maintenance has seem to have forgotten. The building is showing serious age & one immediately starts calculating in their head...."this won't cost much to dine here". However, It does cost as much to dine here as any other local Tex-Mex restaurant. The service was slow and lacking a little personality. I had the pork tacos and my wife & son had chicken, steak & shrimp Tacos. All were good, but not remarkable. Salsa & chips seem tightly regulated & when we asked for more, it felt awkward. The salsa was standard, but what really made the hair on my neck stand up was the loud screech of wooden chair legs being dragged over a concrete floor. BUY some leg protectors for your chairs & dampen the obtrusive noise coming from chairs being pushed back & forth. The saving grace was a good avocado margarita made from fresh avocado, tequila & triple sec...it's what assuaged my mind from the loud chair noise and sub-par ambiance.

Different and delicious

By Stephen L |

Curra's is not your typical mexican (read: tex-mex) restaurant. It specializes in interior Mexican cuisine. The menu is interesting and diverse, and the food is excellent. The drink menu is also interesting, and I tried the cucumber margarita. Wow! Food was very inexpensive, particularly considering the quality. Also of note - the conchita pibil, a pork leg steamed in a banana leaf, served with rice, beans and plantains. Awesome! Service can be a bit slow, especially at the host stand. Try going for lunch to avoid big crowds.

Still wonderful!

By MWS47 |

Curra's is in the Austin Mexican Food Hall of Fame. This is not Classic TexMex. More interior Mexico. This time we had some new items (for us). Started with Jalapeño Relleno Appetizer. Really cheesy, nice batter and the pepper had a bite-will definitely have this again. Comes with beans and rice do it could be a small meal. We also had the shrimp Relleno. My wife liked it but I am not wild about fish/shrimp tacos... I had the chicken enchiladas with sour cream pepper sauce. Wow. Really good.

A great recommendation for authentic Mexican

By JohnUK16 |

I must preface this by saying here in the U.K. I am yet to find a good Mexican restaurant so I have not experienced many tasty ones. The hotel we were staying at recommend med this place for an evening meal. We arrived without booking, it is on a large road so easy access, though parking is limited. There is a small covered outside dining space with more tables inside. We mostly took recommendations from our server who I think might have been a local student but was happy and knowledgable. The food was not fine dining more rustic style but very tasty. A decent amount of spice in most things but everything seemed fresher prepared and very tasty. They also had a few Mexican beer options which we tried. I would very happily recommend this place to anyone looking for a good casual Mexican experience.

Off the path,but worth it!

By Traci S |

The food was delicious and it came to us very quickly. We got the taco carnitas plate and we were not disappointed. Check this place out!

Great Avocado margarita but crazy pricing

By jusyelf |

The food was great as were the drinks. Service was good but I big surprise when we got the check, In Texas almost every place gives chips and hot sauce ours were brought to the table the instant we sat down. On our check we were charged 2.29 for them, also $1.00 charged twice for the sauce for each enchilada,in my past experience enchiladas come with sauce, why not raise the price or tell the customer sauce was extra, The food good but the check was kind of a bummer,

Great Non Tex Mex

By MWS47 |

We have been going to Curra's since the opened after Guerro's moved to SoCo. It is always good and the prices do not seem to have undergone the huge inflation of some other favorites. What do I like from Curra's? The Caldo is wonderful and served in a huge bowl. The Chiliquiles are great. The Carnitas is very traditional - marinated in Coke. Perhaps my favorite thing on the menu are the tamales. They are large and juicy and we get them at Christmas most years

Great food... small hole in the wall that is found off the beaten path. Avocado margarita was good ... if u like tequila. I’m not a tequila drinker though. I had steak tacos and thought the borracho beans were really good!

Slow Service

By Rozypear |

Food was not bad. Nothing to right home about. The salsa was good. The service was terrible. Very slow. The parking lot was full but not overcrowded.

Everything Here Is Incredible

By Jeff J |

It's hard to imagine going somewhere that's famous for avocado margaritas, since I'm not much of a fan of the vegetable or of Jimmy Buffett. But the frozen avocado margaritas served at Curra's are incredibly delicious and incredibly addictive. Since I was trying items that aren't part of my usual palate, I also feasted on a delicious plate of fish tacos (I'm guessing it was snapper) and a delectable serving of something known as molletes: crusty bolillo rolls topped with salsa, refried beans and melted cheese. My only regrets: I didn't have room for dessert and I didn't also come here for breakfast.

Terrific Tex -Mex Tacos

By Margaret G |

We found this place thru our cab driver--and what a find! Near the SoCo area-we stopped for lunch. Known for their To die for Avacado Margaritas-try it you will be amazed!! Guac, salsa, queso Best tacos-Al Pastoral, shrimp tacos, steak tacos. Great flavors, sides, sauces A must stop in Austin

Good Austin Mexican Grille

By 1st_WorldCitizen |

The boss was picking up the tab today so I didn't have a strong say to where we were going to have lunch. One colleague suggested Curro's. I don't why I ordered carne guisada which I had on Monday when I really should have ordered the blackened fish tacos. The carne guisada was very good along with the Spanish rice. Instead of refried beans, the plate came with black beans which I prefer The tortillas were a disappointment. Cold and not homemade Since I was with my co-workers I couldn't let my hair down and have 'refreshment' with authority so I had unsweetened iced tea. I will definitely return, alone, and I'm gonna try out some of the great lookin' margaritas and the blackened fish tacos.

Exquisite flavor in a friendly venue

By Anne S |

I don't want anyone else to know how good the food is here - I want to have it all to myself. If you never try the salsa sampler I'm o.k. with that, because it's an amazing work of culinary and visual artistry that you really don't deserve. By all means be too conventional to try Curra's award-winning avacado margarita...you wouldn't appreciate the delicious creamy lime sherbet feel intersecting with the traditional tequila cocktail we know and love. Fresh, delicious ingredients and a menu with so many choices you'll be on your second basket of chips before you can decide - annoying, right? This restaurant does not need my rating, but I really, really need another plate of vegetable enchiladas and an avacado margarita. I'm taking that small table against the back wall so stay out of my spot if you beat me there. If you must go then for godsake don't insult the wait staff by leaving the customary 20% tip - is it their fault the prices look more like what you'd pay at a place with a clown for a mascot than what you'd expect to pay for an epicurean adventure? Tip them at least half the bill you tightwad.

Must visit in Austin

By Johnny C |

Neat little place. More of a local place. Cool vibe inside. Great choices, Spanish helpful, but just ask for help. Wonderful drinks! We are in Austin every other year, we always come at least once. Medium prices.

Delicious food

By Jpamr5 |

On Friday, September 6, 2019, around 7:00PM five of us dined at Curra’s. We had called ahead to place our name on the waitlist. There was only a few minutes of wait time when we arrived. Service was excellent. Drink menu listed several unique choices. Everyone was pleased with their food. We ordered the pastor enchiladas and we devoured them. They had good flavor and taste. The refried beans were flavorful. Just a note the parking lot is small. Atmosphere had a good vibe and was very noisy.

I still don't know why people like this place so much

By Stephiepu |

The service is always medicore to terrible (I've been peer pressured to go about once a year since 2005) and I got food poisoning the last time I was there and haven't been back even because my friends want to go. The icing on the cake is charging for medicore chips and salsa. Seriously, there are a bazillion authentic Mexican food restaurants in Austin to choose from that far surpass this place.

Good food, but noisy and menus need replacing

By Sookiesiamese |

Have eaten here several times, and the food does not disappoint. The environment, however is lacking. If you go to the right you will be in a very noisy room and you cannot hear your dining partner, so stay to the right. The menu is varied and interesting, but it is looking very dated and there are no prices on the signature drinks. Why price the food and not the drinks? Overall I really like this place, but they could improve the noise issue and reprint their menus.

Underwhelming all around

By IndySevenSeas |

I had a first visit with a friend to try their signature offers on a Friday afternoon hours. While most places have a great happy hour, Curra's did not have one. My server was very nice and offered their signature Martini so I tried it. Nothing out of the ordinary. The plastic shaker made the drink go warm faster than usual- this is Texas and the patio is adjacent to a parking lot and a gas station. But the real downer was the ceviche. If you can imagine, it was a layer of dry salad ingredients including iceberg lettuce!! Then, a line-up of defrosted shrimps, topped with slices of avocado- barely ripe avocado. Because ceviche is a cooking style, the lime or lemon juice was totally absent and a concern. The ceviche order was for 2 and included octopus: nice try if you could find octopus in the mix. For about $40 for 2, 1 drink each plus a shared ceviche, I will not return to Curra's. They are surely living on some past gone good memories.

Iconic Mexican Food Eatery!

By Merry W |

This is a classic indoor/outdoor laid-back South Austin eatery with an interesting menu and good service. Parking can be a challenge but it's worth it. I love the queso fundido con rajas (melted cheese with spicy pepper strips though I usually get it without chorizo, which I think makes tit too greasy). Try anything with the fried bananas. Enjoy the art, the people watching and a cold beer or margarita. Ah........ I go here to transition back to Austin every time I've been on vacation!

Mex not Tex-Mex

By Ronnjonna |

Avacado margaritas are good, especially when sitting on the shady patio in the cool breeze. Tomales are fresh and they even offer a vegetable option, which you don't see often. Charro beans are soupy-fine and perfect with corn tortillas. My mole chicken was good, although would have been better with a bone-in roasted quarter chicken than with the breast slice. Rice was tasty. Agree with previous TA reviewer that they "nickel and dime" customers with charges for sauces and chips. Just raise prices a bit to avoid ungenerous at the end. We would return.

Best Mexican breakfast in Austin!

By Texmt |

We eat out a lot and enjoy good food, which Curra's on Oltorf has been serving up since I came here over 20 years ago. George' has this place dialed in for excellent breakfast, lunch, or dinner...now offering a fantastic new Tequila called Carbonero… When not traveling, we try to get breakfast at Curra's including his special Charro beans recipe which is the best we have ever tasted! Homade corn tortellas selection compliments the fresh breakfast selections...today I had Chilequea's with chorizo...to die for! And the "Juaquin coffee" is unique offering also...Give them a try...you won't be disappointed!

Always solid Texas breakfast

By Rob_Madison_NJ |

An Austin institution, we love this place, the breakfast tacos, migas and other solid egg dishes are really good and really filling. Always a great way to load up before a solid day of bands and booze for SXSW. There's magic in that borracho sauce. Put it on everything! Ask for extra!

Very Good Fish

By El_Pirata |

Had the Dinner fish. It was very good. Chips and salsa were good. Salsa picante, be aware. Wait staff was excellent. Was there for lunch, so no review on drinks.

Funky and Tastey with an Austin Flair

By tzlord |

Great food with novel combinations. The avacoado margaritas are wonderful as is the home made ice cream but get an entree too! However, parking is difficult so come early or by cab.

Good tex mex food and huge plates

By Camille M |

We were staying at the Best Western in Austin and this restaurant was recommended by the front desk clerk. We wanted to try tex mex food and that place was on point. We made the mistake of eating chips and salsa before our main dish and we could only eat half our plate. We were really happy with our discovery!

Some of the very best Mexican food I have eaten.

By Ron R |

I am staying at a hotel near the airport. Many local or nearby restaurants are closed on a Tuesday evening, but not this one. Given it is only five miles away, and I was interested in a Mexican meal, I decided to give it a try. The restaurant does not look like much from the outside (or the inside!), but the food is amazing. I tried a bowl of chicken soup and enchiladas — and, I was totally pleased with both. Note well, they do not sell wine by the glass; only 375 ml bottles which equates to 2+ glasses. All good.

Pretty Good Food, But Nothing Distinctive

By MichiganBanjoMan |

"Did I get you, hon?" asked the hostess/server as she spilled a full margarita right by our table, with some of the contents landing on my wife's leg. Elegant service isn't what you'll find at Curra's, but what there is of it is relatively prompt, and the food is decent. But let's face it: When you smother a burrito or an enchilada with lots of cheese and cilantro, the inner ingredients don't matter all that much. I ordered my enchiladas with a pork and chipotle sauce filling, but it could have been chicken and some other sauce, and I might not have been able to tell the difference. I requested some hot sauce, which turned out to be salsa, but it was too mild to spice things up very much. Chips and salsa are available, but you have to pay for them. Prices are modest and portions are ample, but the noise level is very high, explaining why the parking lot is almost always full. Although you won't find quietude in any Austin Tex Mex restaurant, I'm coming to prefer Polvo's, both for the food and the ambiance.

Long-time customer very disappointed, won't be back!

By dwgibbs |

As a longtime customer, we drove from far north Austin to Curra's for breakfast, anticipating the great food and service we'd always received. We couldn't have been more disappointed! Our server, Sol, botched both our orders. About 15 minutes after placing our orders, he came out to announce our food would be ready in one minute. The a couple of minutes later, he came back to announce they didn't have the ingredients for one of the orders (which happened to be their lead item on their menu!), so my wife had to pick something else. A few minutes later, they brought out our plates of food. My wife's was ice-cold. Mine was incorrect. This was where it really got frustrating! After they served our plates, they disappeared. No waiter or hostess came back to check to see if our food was good or if we needed a coffee refill. Finally, the hostess came within range that we got her attention. We sent back my wife's plate to re-heat it, but it never came back. I was trying to get some salsa but again, no waiter or hostess were available. We finally had to get up from our table, go to the front of the hostess stand, and offered to pay for the coffee we drank. They waived us off without any real apology. I don't think I'll ever go back there, nor can I recommend it to friends or family.

Six stars at this price, really delicious

By eternaloptimist815 |

I hadn't been to Austin for a few years and forgot how much I love this place. Or maybe it just got better. 8.95 bowl of tortilla soup full of vegetables, super-flavorful chicken, and great broth was sized like a larged Vietnamese pho but more delicious! Mole poblano enchiladas really excellent with complex sauce. Enchiladas Curras a little too cheesy for my taste but excellent slow-cooked pork inside. Red corn tortillas are unusual and sweetly flavorful. Snapper ceviche was only ok. Great veggie tamales. 4 adults and 2 kids ate for $60, with plentiful leftovers.

outstanding food

By paul00358451 |

This place had the best salsa and chili caso I've ever had. The servings are size large the small tamale plate came with 4 plus the rice and beans. The Hopadillo IPA beer nice and cold

My go to S.Austin Authentic Mexican Food

By Steve |

Have been coming here for about 20 years now. Simply great Mexican food. Their vege tacos and of course the flan is out of this world! I can't say enough great things about this place. The owners are extremely friendly as well as all of the wait staff. If ever in Austin this place is a must!

Solid Mexican Food

By Ron S. Boxborough |

Really enjoyed the salsa tasting plate, which had 10 or more different salsas. Service was prompt and courteous. I had enchiladas (pastor) with refried pinto beans and rice that I really enjoyed. The Currita margaritas are good.

What Can I say!?

By EvC18 |

I have patronized this establishment every time I am in Austin. As soon as i leave this weird city, i am craving this food. By far one of the jewel's of Austin not to discount the BBQ restaurants. Every dish served is authentic Tex-Mex. Staff is very friendly and this is not the type of establishment that will shun you if you arrive late or during rush hour. I am here for five more days and will be back at least another three more times. Absolutely love it.

Great breakfast tacos and enchiladas!

By Rob_Madison_NJ |

Hit this place twice during our SXSW visit after long night's out. This is the perfect hangover breakfast/brunch place. The breakfast tacos and burritos and borracho sauce are the best. Get here!

One of the Best Mexican Restaurants in Austin

By FoodfanUSA |

First visit...enjoyed it very much. Great outdoor seating with typical indoor seating. Fast friendly service. Large drink menu and large drinks. Can't go wrong with that combo. Might have the best margarita and mexican martini selection in Austin. Had the Chile Colorado and it is the best in Austin. Others had the small tamale plates (4 tamales) and they were very good with some left to take home. I can only imagine how much food you get with the large tamale plate? Great price value. I'll be back for more.

Avocado Margarita?!

By rdp343 |

Stopped here for lunch with a group of friends. The atmosphere and lunch were very good. You have to try the avocado margarita, so good!

Best Tex-Mex in Austin!

By Jake662013 |

Love this place, so sorry they closed other locations. Great Tex-Mex, fantastic assortment of sauces (best mole in town!), terrific prices, great staff. A can't-miss!

Great Tacos

By turtle722 |

My first tacos al pastor and were awesome. My son got the carnitas which were amazing. Good service nice selection of beers.

Great booze and salsas

By leona724 |

Drink here. Eat here. The salsa tasting platter is a must. You can find your favorite or realize they are all awesome! Food if good but drinks and salsa stand out and make the trip worth it!

Okay, but nothing really stands out

By AustinEEE |

We'd heard excellent things from a friend so we decided to try it. Service was quite good, but the food was really just mediocre; in fact, there is nothing really to report other than this was average, run of the mill Mexican. I'd love to tell you there was a standard dish or appetizer, but it was all just okay. In addition my wife reported the margarita was quite watered down and small.

Don't judge a book by it's cover

By Dave B |

My daughter wanted Mexican and I didn't want to have to drive too far from the hotel that night. This was close and well reviewed. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food was quite good! It's not fancy on the inside either, but it's clean and the staff was nice. Ultimately it's the food you care about though. I'd go back here anytime I was in the area.

Still the best Interior Mexican Food

By TK14 |

Curra's Grill is the the best Interior Mexican food place in Austin. It's not a fancy place, just very good food. The wait staff is busy and service is adequate. It's filled with locals and off the beaten path. The pork dishes are all good and we love the guacamole side salad. The freshly made hot sauce is the best. It's one of our favs in Austin.

Wonderful Food

By Kate T |

I've been here for drinks and appetizers and thought it was great, but this visit I went for breakfast and it was really delicious! They have wonderful house special dishes that are really a must try. The parking can be really tricky- it's Austin so if the lot is full, it's hard to find a spot and you'll have to walk a ways, but it's worth it- even if you have to wait for a table - it's worth it!

Nummy

By ProfMercator |

Avocado margarita, kind of like a tequila smoothy. Excellent. Very helpful waiter who made recommendations and helped us Midwesterners navigate the menu. A couple of veggie options for my vegetarian husband. Liked the option of ordering 2 enchiladas each with a different filling and sauce.

Nice little Old South Austin hangout

By Orion G |

We don't eat here very often because, quite frankly, the parking is horrendous. We mostly park in the neighborhood and walk back. Tonight I had the Tacos al Pastor plate. The tacos were nice and big, very tasty, but slightly dry. Nothing the included green sauce couldn't fix. I was amused that the borracho beans that cost an extra dollar were more juice than bean. I put my rice into the bowl of juice and it was yummy.

Food ok. Very Smokey!

By Jmooo |

I met a friend here for lunch. Since Austin is a non-smoking city didn't think choosing to sit outside would mean we would be surrounded by smokers but we were. It ruined my lunch. When I asked our server about the smoke she could have cared less. Not sure I will return. Apparently, you can still smoke outside at restaurants. Yuk!

Delicious Authentic Mexican Cuisine

By Courtney D |

We haven't found anything this close to the delicious foods in Tulum Mexico until this place. Everything from the service, the salsa sampler and the meals were superb. We had the shrimp cancun tacos and carnitas tacos...soooo yummy. Other reviews were on point, the Avocado Margarita has made me a convert. No other margarita will do now. The Tequila Smash was strong and smooth (loved laughing at my normally composed bf when his words got twisted after his second and he had no clue!!) We will definitely be back. Enjoy!

Was hoping for better based on reviews

By Questseekers |

Margaritas were awesome! Food was just alright...we had mole enchiladas and carne guisada. Tres leches was also awesome.

Food great! Service not!

By mswtraveler |

We came into town for the weekend and wanted something special, something "Austin". Friends recommended Curra's. In short, great atmosphere (we loved the fact that it is next to a gas station!) and great food! Drinks were pretty tasty as well! But I must say, our server was just not interested in us at all. Slow service, forgotten drinks, could not even answer my request for a recommendation from the drink menu. For the food we would go back, but the extremely poor service will keep us from doing so...there are other places that actually want your business, and act like it.

Skip this place.

By Travlin' Man |

We were told that this place has the best margaritas in Austin and the person recommending this place said she checked online confirming her opinion. The "original" margarita was very good but the blended avocado one was not. The chips and salsa were ok but the food very average to poor. The place looks sketchy going in and we will not return. The device was poor but probably not surprisingly so.

We were impressed!

By MyZiggyMan |

We tried Curra's on a whim after searching options for Mexican food & margaritas online. We were very pleasantly surprised. It's not a fancy place (looks like a converted former convenience store or laundromat), but don't let that throw you off. The staff was friendly. When I asked which margarita she recommended, she immediately perked up with "I love it when customers ask me for suggestions!" The margarita she recommended was A+ - a tall glass filled with tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, a splash of sweet & sour and topped with a brandy floater. It was perfect. We started with the queso fundido with chorizo and roasted poblano peppers. Excellent! My husband opted for a stewed pork dish, which he enjoyed. I opted for a combo plate that included a pork tamale, chicken verde enchilada and a steak topped in grilled onions and ranchero sauce. The tamale and enchilda were good, but that steak was amazing. Cooked exactly as I ordered it (medium rare), it was the highlight of the night. In fact, I'd be happy with just the steak & margarita next time, so I'd definitely order it again. Chips with the homemade salsa were free and very tasty, as well. Parking is extremely limited, but other than that - Curra's gets an A from me!

Great Mexican food!

By UpstateNySimplyme |

We stopped in for the food, which was fantastic but the margaritas were even better! We tried 3 kinds, the mango A+++, the strawberry A++++, and the Avocado, which sounded weird to us but we were willing to try it. It was Amazing!!!

I'd fly to Austin just to eat here

By Lynn M |

Had not been here for a dozen years, and did not remember it well, but once I ate lunch here, I came back twice more in as many days. Spectacular food! The chilaquiles were the perfect food for the morning after, the pork tacos al pastor were delightful, light and complex. Refried beans so creamy and soothing, nice chips and salsa - and we never waited very long for anything, at least at lunch, even though the place is always busy. I took a dozen tamales home with me on the plane - held me up in security a bit, since they were packed alongside some cellphone chargers and looked pretty suspicious in the xray machine, but well worth it! My new favorite thing about Texas!

Yummy

By AnnettaC |

As someone that does not prefer Mexican food this place was super good! My hubby and his buddy live Mexican and they also really enjoyed it. I can't remember the names of what we eat, mine was pull pork cooked in coke, oj, and milk. I would love to go back for more. Salsa was good drinks were great.

Diamond in the rough! Great place!

By Stephanie B |

The food was amazing and the atmosphere was very welcoming. Great place to eat and our waitress was on point!! The cheese dip with the guacamole was amazing!

Not bad, not the best

By Chloe |

I was seated in the back room, which did not have a pleasant odor. I got used to it, however. My waitress was attentive and courteous. The wait time was good, I didn't feel like it took too long to receive my food. However, the food was average. It was good, but I have definitely had better Mexican food.

OMG...Delicious!

By NORA M |

Margaritas were fabulous! Fajitas were seasoned to perfection! Service outstanding! Would definitely recommend!

Excellent Mexican off the beaten track

By KSfamily00 |

A loud, busy, informal Mexican restaurant with excellent food and reasonable prices. There was a crow waiting, but we were seated quickly and the service was good. Try the mole. And the chocolate cake for dessert.

Yuck

By Sarah G |

Simply put, do not have high expectations for the food when you eat here. We were not impressed at all! Our fajitas were cold, the server was clueless, & everything was overpriced in comparison to the quality of the food. We will not return.

Fun and delicious TexMex

By Samantha L |

Great margaritas and TexMex food. Empanadas were crisp and juicy. The chips and salas were perfect. The waitress was friendly and funny. Really delicious spot in Austin.

Try the avocado margarita

By Stivey |

THe food is good, but the real draw is the avocado margarita. So delicious. Creamy goodness. I also had the vegetable tamales which were good. Good prices too

Good food, slow service

By Mark M |

We were seated and waited 10 minutes for a service to offer us drinks. It was so awkward that we thought of leaving. On glad we didn't because the food was good. So if you are not fussy about fast service, give Curra's a try.

Great Atmosphere

By Aaron C |

Came here with friends to try it out. We wanted to try a different a Mexican place. This place was good. The food was good. I had the Tacos al Pastor and a swirl Margarita. The food didn't take that long to come out which is a A plus in my book. The wait staff was very friendly and nice. My only complaint was the seating. The tables and chairs felt out of place. They were uncomfortable and looked like they belong in a school cafeteria. Other than that good place. Side note, the wall murals were beautiful!

Awesome Mexican food

By ForcHa |

Couldn't get any better. The prices are very nice. The food is awesome. Reminds me of being back in Oaxaca. If you are in Austin and like Mexican food go here. You won't regret it. They also sell Mexican coffee by the pound which i can't recommend enough.

Good Tex Mex

By jasonhaynes1985 |

Love this place! The parking is the only thing that is bad as they only have about 15 parking spots for their restaurant, but totally worth the wait. Love coming here with my wife and every time we have been here we have been beyond satisfied. Definitely recommend for a reasonably priced place.

Best Mexican Food ever!

By Elizabeth D |

We were searching for a New Mexican restaurant to explore, and we sure found one. My friend Ronnie, who grew up in Texas, says that this is the"best Mexican food he has ever had, hands down!" He had the classic pork tacos, his wife had the blackened fish tacos, and I had the beef and grilled onions tacos with their new habenaro sauce - fantastic! All this, with a Tecate beer, for under $50. We will be back!!

Good food - spotty service

By tony_in_san_jose |

Delicious Tex Mex eatery with excellent variety of both traditional and fusion choices. Try the Avocado margarita if you are feeling adventurous, but their regular margs are great as well. Note that chips and salsa are not served for free unlike most other Tex -Mex restaurants. Inside seating is comfortable, but the outside furniture has an odd mismatch between the height of the table and the pitch of the chairs -- really odd -- but that could be part of the charm. Service is sometimes courteous and friendly and at other times cold and matter of fact. It's an odd place.

Return Visit After a Decade Or So...

By Jim T |

We used to dine here regularly, but for one reason our another (construction, moving, other places to explore, etc) it dropped from our list. Last evening we made a return visit with friends, and were glad we did. They were short on servers, yet were able to get us our queso (YUM!) & chips right away so we didn't starve. The waiter had recommendations which were both appreciated and accepted. Every one enjoyed their meal (3 different types of enchiladas, one tacos al carbon). Love the charro beans. In short, I was happy to rediscover this old favorite, and can honestly say it was better than i remembered. I'll be back,.

Wow wow wow

By Mexner1 |

Our family visited Austin for Mother's Day and our Austin residing daughter recommended Curras. We had six people who ALL swear it was one of the best meals EVER and not just Mexican. The margaritas are superb and the salsas are all amazing. The mole is the real deal. Can't thank the good folks there for such a great meal. Our waiter was a little odd but it is Austin so that was okay. Really folks... try this place. Not fancy but really really good

Nice, but service sucked

By BabsdeAustin |

We arrived at 2:45pm and were quickly seated. Menus came, as did water and chips. And then we waited and waited and waited. We were tempted to order our margaritas directly from the bar, but decided to wait instead. Our waitress finally appeared, and apologized, saying she was restocking in the back. Our order was taken, and the food delivered mas rapidido. Yummy pepper jack poblano sauce chicken enchiladas, but my chipotle pollo was overburdened with cheese and very light on the avocado. The red corn tortillas were delish! After our meal, we once again waited and waited and waited for the waitress to bring our check. Once delivered, however, she returned to the table lickety split. Seems she was in a hurry now! Overall, I would not recommend my dish, but many others looked good. Just be veeeeerrry verrrry patient with the service.

Quantity not quality

By BridgetteG666 |

I know Curra's was busy but service was definitely without a smile, staff kept barging into my husbands chair. The tamales were large but tasteless and stodgy.

Visiting Austin

By Ken B |

Great service. Excellent coffee, unique (a dark roast with a little bit of chocolate and nuttiness). I ordered the huevos Curra's, carne guisada with 2 sunny-side-up eggs. Beautifully spiced charro beans and homemade tortillas. Life is good!

Tex Mex. The Real Deal

By S7139VEjimg |

Unassuming place with great food. Our 1st night in Austin where our daughter lives & she recommended this place where the locals go for good Tex Mex. Avocado Margarita & Tequila mules were good to start. We had veggie & lamb empanadas, a cold Campechana seafood cocktail followed by pescado al mojo de ajo, conchinita pobil spicy pork dish. Food all excellent washed down with a Modelo negra.

Best Mexican breakfast you can find in South Austin

By Jack M |

My wife had been there the night before with friends of hers, and her experience was so good we decided to head back there for breakfast the following morning. I'm very, VERY glad she made that decision for us. The place is as unpretentious as a coffee shop, but its food is second-to-none. I had the larger Alliss Breakfast Plate, while my wife selected the Migas (she always gets the Migas). The guisada (stewed meat) I had was perfectly seasoned and tender, and was the perfect complement to the scrambled eggs and avocado. I'd tell you about the Migas, but my wife was unwilling to share any with me. There are homogenized, Americanized versions of Mexican restaurants everywhere. And there are "Tex-Mex" places, which serve commendable fare. And then there are the few that bring the real thing. Go to Curra's, and appreciate the authenticity.

Average and over priced- not worth it

By Erik M |

Average food. Missing that taste factor and over priced for what you get. Staff not very attentive. This place used to be amazing— but don’t waste your time. There’s better spots in austin. Don’t come here you won’t be missing anything.

Fell down and broke their crown

By Stiglitz11 |

This was one of my favorite places for years. I knew the manager and such. The best thing on the menu was the Pescado Veracruzano. This last time it was not well done. The drinks were terrible, weak and tasteless. The whole ambience seemed to have fallen on hard times despite all the work they have done. I tried the Mole too and it wasn't up to standards. For the prices this place has seen the last of me. The wait staff were surely and condescending and slow. I weathered their bad days when the road was being rebuilt and actually liked their food back then but now it isn't worth the trip. Being from Del Rio, TX I like to visit a great place when I visit my kids and this place once was great Someone just decided they would live on their reputation. Now it is bad food and bad drinks and high prices. Such a shame.

Curras must mean couldn't care less

By Mexner1 |

My family ate here in May and we loved it. Tonight on a return trip to Austin we went and were looking forward to another great meal... wrong. The service was sooo poor and EVERY dish was poorly executed. At one point we had ordered a couple of beers and 20 minutes later I went inside to ask about them and the owner told me to wait a few minutes and they'd be right there. I told him there were 7 people standing around doing absolutely nothing!! And the place was almost empty!! Got the beers 10 minutes later. Wake up! Lots of great places to eat Mexican in Austin. This is not one of them. AVOID!!!! Owner is a big d$&k

Great breakfast!

By Katherine L |

the food is great, very reasonable, service is fast and friendly, I arrived early for a party of 6 and they seatedme immediately on Saturday at noon. I expected to wait but was pleasantly surprised!

Great local food and flavors

By AmberJoBo |

The avocado margarita is an absolute must here! However they have about 15 other margarita options to choose from as well. The food menu is also quite large. Everything is delicious, you can't go wrong. They have a unique flair for a lot of dishes you may have tried before. Pretty authentic Mexican like the locals would do it. Not much for ambience but there is indoor and outdoor seating and the staff is really nice.

Muy Bueno!

By Magillacutty260 |

It was good food for sure! They know how to do it here! I had some sort of shrimp enchiladas that were so tasty!! There was pineapple in them which created a very good flavor! Loved the food! They were pretty busy but we got a table outside. Service was not fabulous but acceptable.

The real deal

By Rcovington4 |

This is the way I remember Tex Mex food from once living in Texas: simple surroundings a little off the beaten track and great food. My wife and I had a good experience here. She tried the avocado margarita and liked it a lot. In my youth, I would come to places like this on a Sunday morning for heuvos rancheros and to forget the after effects of the night before. The recipe stands the test of time: Good food, good value and good times,

Get the avocado margarita!!!

By Michelle Wacker |

Great priced food with lots of options. Authentic Mexican. I loved the avocado margaritas and basically dream about them. The place has wonderful mural art inside. Super friendly staff. Also try the banana on your rice. Super delicious.

Always Tasty and Different

By Terri S |

Curra's has always had food that was a little bit better. If your mom is Mexican and a good cook, this is what she would make for your family. Beware, the habanero sauce (orange) is HOT 🔥

Good Place To Try

By troythestarfish |

This was the 2nd time I had a chance to eat here and the food was just as good as it was the 1st time. I've had the fish tacos the 1st time and the Chicken & Pork Enchiladas this time. Several folks told me to try this place and I was very pleased in the food and service.

Still delicious food

By Lynnmaui |

I have been coming here for 20 yrs and have never been disappointed. We haven't been here in awhile. They have upgraded their tables and murals. Our server, Chris, was excellent. I am a big fan of their mango margarita, but, decided to try the mango mimosa, not so good, too much mango purée was the consensus. We had the salsa sampler which was very good. I liked the avocado salsa best. Every one liked their entrees, chicken quesadilla s,nachos especiale, chorizo egg white omelette and a breakfast special. There prices are very reasonable and I highly recommend this restaurant.

Great drinks & Great food: We'll be back!

By chinagirl0808 |

yummy drinks + great chips and salsa + great food = we'll be back soon! we all ordered something different and everyone enjoyed what they got!

Breakfast Migas!

By Sara76502 |

Our favorite Austin breakfast place. Enjoyed delicious breakfast migas and their wonderful Oaxacan coffee. Very friendly service.

Delicious food

By David B |

We had the blackened fish enchiladas and they were delicious. The rice and beans were also tasty. Unfortunately the place was very unclean. Menus were filthy on the inside. Floor and seats were dirty. Flies were buzzing around inside and the bathroom door didn't close well. My family said they would not go back.

Delicious!!

By MagsATL |

Hotel recommended - we were wary. DELICIOUS Mexican! Good drinks, service and prices. Seems like locals go here, which makes it even better.

Go for the food, not for decor or service

By JWRAustin_TX |

So if you're in Austin and want to get some reasonably priced Mexican food, try Curra's, located in an old 7/11 store on a relatively close-in South Side neighborhood (Oltorf near S. Congress). It gets crowded at lunch and early dinner hours, and when it's crowded, it's loud. If the weather allows, choose the outdoor area (quieter, more space, too). But the food is almost always good. Two weeks ago, I ordered chicken flautas, for a change. I thought they were quite good. I don't remember having a choice of beans. Their borracho beans are the best I've had in a restaurant. My friend ordered her usual enchiladas de mole, which everyone says are good. I'm a green enchilada woman myself and Curra's enchiladas verdes de pollo are among the best in Austin. Did I say don't forget the borracho beans?

Great Tex-Mex

By Barg B |

Really authentic tex-mex. Mole is perfect if you like it hot. Avocado margarita is definitely to try.

Bad art but good chow

By Stiglitz11 |

I eat here a lot when I come to Austin. At times it is difficult to find a parking place and being on Oltorf St. makes for a traffic battle at times but where in Austin is that not the case. The staff there is great and the fish wonderful. The mole is good to boot. A not really traditional Mexican place but the menu is good, with many choices and they are all good.

One of the best in Austin

By Keith M |

Fantastic Mexican food, a favorite here in Austin for me. Recently discovered the blackened fish enchiladas, which are fantastic. The chicken nachos are a great shared appetizer too, but you can't go wrong here. Also the avocado margaritas are a definite must-try.

I Only WISH I Could Have Had An Adult Beverage At Lunch?!?!?

By Michele A Brown |

I was thrilled when a friend suggested a working lunch at Curra's. The funky, fun atmosphere was backed with fantastic service, delish food, and a peek at a drink menu that left me craving an avocado margarita for lunch?!?! Alias, not that kinda lunch and I will return for dinner and drinks. Lunch was served promptly, was priced right, and really great! Highly recommend the chicken tacos on corn with rice and black beans. My companions had enchiladas and breakfast which looked equally as delectable. Easy to access, park--even with a big Texas truck-- and outdoor seating. Cannot wait to come back!

Good for an occasional visit.

By bpj1 |

We like this restaurant and try to go every couple of months. The food is generally good. The veggie tacos are good. Good chips and hot sauce as well as queso. Good beans and rice. The noise level can be extremely high. The last few times that we have gotten the guacamole it looks and taste like it came out of a package. Not very flavorful, and presents as if it is a scoop of ice cream. No chunks of avocado. That’s unfortunate because this seems like a genuinely authentic restaurant. With that said, overall we enjoy this restaurant and will be more selective about what we order. If it is full, and you’re sitting inside is certainly not the place for a relaxing conversation. The drinks are good. The wait staff is good.

Basic Tex-Mex cuisine

We have been coming to this restaurant for the last 16 yrs.Prices are reasonable and the food is quite good.I like their fajita's,tacos al Pastore and frozen mango margaritas

I went to try the Avocado Margarita, and the food was amazing as well! Terrific location and friendly service!

Gets better with age

I come here often, when I am in Austin. It's a wonderful sort of place, out of the mainstream of all the Austin eateries. The food is consistently good, whether you eat in the restaurant or get it to go. They will make the little breakfast tacos any way you want them, which is great if you are feeding a family and everyone wants something different. I will always go back for more.

Excellent as always

We traveled to Austin for a family wedding and had to revisit Curra's before leaving town. My wife loves the Avocado Margarita's and queso and I love the tamale platter. Outstanding!

Overall very fair

By Nailcutter |

Came here while on business. Chips and salsa extra $2.29. Manager was nice and brought out free samples and chips. Our waiter was just 3 months so the manager helped us out. This brought the ranking to 3 stars. Fajitas for $15 were not what you expect as they were not sizzling on a plate but served on the same plate as the fixings. Chicken was luke enchiladas were sent back twice due to being cold and never were hot. The flank steak in tomato sauce was fair at best and not that hot either. Food was ok and no,issues with the service.

Best in Austin!

By Jo Ann R |

Okay, I'm usually one to stick with one of the well-known Mexican food chains in Austin, but since my husband and I were in the neighborhood of Curra's, we decided to stop and have brunch. Oh my gosh! SO glad we did! The service was amazing, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was truly authentic. My husband ordered the chicken quesadillas and I ordered the chicken nachos. We split our orders with one another, and I can honestly say both items were some of the best I have ever had, and I've eaten at a LOT of Tex-Mex restaurants, especially seeing that there is one on just about every corner in Austin and for that matter, Texas. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back to try one of their margaritas which I have heard from friends are pretty darn amazing! Whether you live in the Austin area or are just visiting, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Pretty decent food.

By Tirzah D |

We came because my friend was told they had great ceviche. I don't eat seafood but they told me it was just okay.... nothing to write home about. At first I enjoyed the chips. They serve them warm. however, I started getting some chips that tasted stale and old. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think they even make them there... I believe they are the store bought kind. The salsa was good and spicy though. I got the tacos al carbon. They were good. I put some queso on them to give them an extra kick. I really liked the rice as well. I didn't go to the bathroom, but my friend told me the men's restroom was really filthy.

Rats

By Elly |

Enjoyed a delicious dinner at Curras... UNTIL A RAT ran over my feet and under the tables. The staff chased the rat through the crowded restaurant into a corner, and then stomped on it in attempt to kill it in front of all of the horrified customers eating dinner. The rat kept squealing, so they used the kitchen broomstick to jab it until it stopped screaming. I don't think I will ever return to this restaurant.

Horrible service and the food was just as bad

By Denise A |

I wonder how this place is still in service?!We went there because the reviews were pretty decent and boy oh boy, I’ve never been so disappointed. The avocado margaritas were warm, the shrimp cocktail was all tomato and only like 3 shrimp, and the fish was soupy. The ONLY delicious plate of food was my adobada taco plate. That’s just the food, now let me tell you about the service. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I think the gentleman that helped us was either new or being a server really is NOT his thing. He kept forgetting everything, no silverware or napkins. Then it was the hot sauce, our drinks, and lastly our check. The place wasn’t even busy, there was only one other family out on the patio. Long story short, NEVER coming back to this place! Wouldn’t recommend, spend your money elsewhere!

Average Breakfast

By girleatsworld360 |

We came here and had the migas and chilaquiles as our first authentic Mexican breakfast and we left expecting more flavor. I did not realize at the time, since it was out first Mexican breakfast, but migas are best when you still get some crunchy tortilla pieces and that was definitely not the case.

Small bland portions

By Janice V |

I think they think that we're all from up north somewhere that doesn't care for spice. All the food was bland. I don't like how they assemble the tacos instead of bringing an entree and some tortillas on the side.

Bold Rich Flavors

By Kevin512 |

The avocado margherita is a must. The salsa served with chips, is perfectly balanced heat and flavor. The Oaxacan coffee has a great flavor profile.

Sadly

By GStroud |

This was one of my favorites. Was excited to get to go. When we walked in the place was dirty. The floors looked old, needing cleaning. The seating is almost worn out. If the food had been great it would not be an issue. I had vegetarian tacos, tasted old. My refried beans were good. My wife had enchiladas. She said hers were not bad but the black beans were cold, and had no flavor. The guacamole was just okay, did not taste like it was home made, rather the kind you buy in a super market. Disappointed was all I can say about the visit.

Great Tacos for lunch . . . plus bonus

By Ross J |

This is a great local joint on the sounds end of 35 in Austin. It is in a small storefront with inside and outside seating. It has a large and varied menu. I had the tacos al carbon for lunch and they were delicious. They don’t bring chips and salsa like some places do, but it’s only a couple of bucks. Being in Austin, you never know who you will see. The guy in the pic with his back to the window is Matthew McConaghey.

Good Mexican food

By Khoa N |

I was on a business trip in late January. I asked the hotel clerk where do they eat, stated Curra's grill. A family owned mom and pop joint. We had great service, food was very good with hefty portions. No frills establishedment but that is where you find home cooked meals, very authentic. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner.

We love this place-our family favorite!!

By Lisa D |

We adore this place. Austin has many wonderful Tex-Mex restaurants so to say this sits at the top of the heap is something! We love their breakfast tacos and eat them weekly. They have many fillings to choose from-including veggie chorizo! You just can't go wrong with a visit to Curra's!!

Good food, very friendly server

By Heather B |

This place was open for breakfast so we tried it one day. Great choice. Our waitress was pleasant helpful and send us home w fresh chips and salsa to go w our left overs. Tried a variety of enchiladas, and flautas (chicken, my fav of the day). Def a good choice.

An Hour To Get Served Dinner & It Was A Nightmare

By TXGarfield |

Once or twice a year my Family and I make it down to Austin for the weekend with the grandkids for R & R. When we do, we always make a point to eat at one of Austin's iconic Mexican restaurants. This trip we decided upon Curra's Grill. We ate there on a Saturday night, and it was moderately busy. Our waiter had a great attitude and welcomed us like family. We ordered a variety of appetizers, drinks and entrees. After thirty minutes had gone by and we had only been served water, tortilla chips and salsa, we asked our waiter what was taking so long. He apologized and said he would find out. Another ten minutes went by and we finally got our drinks (beer & cocktails). When our drinks were brought out we asked again why it was taking so long to get our appetizers and entrees. Our waiter apologized again and said he would check with the kitchen. An hour after being seated, we finally received our appetizers and entrees. Half of the food was not hot, several of the orders were wrong. We ordered campechana with snapper, octopus and shrimp. We received only shrimp. We ordered ceviche, and it was mostly lettuce. The dinner was a complete bust. Our waiter was nice, but the service from the bar and kitchen was deplorable. We will never return. Next trip we will be returning to Guero's on Congress where every meal has been stellar.

Horrible Curras takeout

By James W |

I ordered the caldo soup to take out, I come to eat in the restaurant every week, but have never done takeout, I did order other items, the soup was like a chicken garbage can, no reason for all the many ingredients never expected in caldo, true caldo, no chips in it , the chicken disintegrated to can chicken, no cilantro, an embarrassment to any reputable restaurant. AND served in a single paper container that disintegrated before I got home 10 minutes away. Shameful…. Lazy management

My favorite restaurant in Austin

By Mike L |

I will go out of my way to eat here, as the menu is unique and it's a great value. Curra's is funky and not fancy. But the food is authentic and they have a plethora of margarita variations. Service can be spotty and it can get noisy during peak times. But i still love the place.

Best Mexican Breakfast!

By Heather V |

In a lot of ways, this feels like a "hole in the wall"...a restaurant that, while kitchy and cute, is a little rough around the edges. But I've been going here for about 10 years and I can tell you that this place serves the best menu-based Mexican breakfast in town, hands down. From the Oaxacan coffee to the chillaquiles or migas, the flavors are incredible. The only reason this doesn't get an excellent from me is that their lunch/dinner service, while very good, doesn't rate for me as well as their breakfast options.

What a find in Austin

By Aine K |

We stumbled upon this place while we were in town and we're so so glad we did. This is the best Mexican food I think I have ever had (went for breakfast twice) and our waitress was wonderful too. We even went back for margaritas at night as well. If you like spice, try the Habernero Margarita. Also love the colourful decor and down to earth friendly feel.

Get the Avocado Rita!

By Maranda C |

I live in Austin, and this is one of the main restaurants that my friends and I always come back to. Anytime we have visitors in town, we take them the Curras. The food is great. I've honestly never had something that I didn't like. My favorites are the Cancun Tacos, the Tamales, or the Caldo. Get the refried black beans, and also add bananas to your rice. The chips and salsa are great, especially if you order a side of borracho sauce.Their breakfast tacos aren't on the menu, but are delicious. You have to try the avocado margarita, even if you don't like avocado. This place is very much a hole in the wall restaurant. Don't let the gas station next door deter you. It may not be the cleanest or newest eatery, but it is an Austin staple with the locals and it definitely has it's own charm. There have been times we haven't had the best service, but that has never kept us from coming back. The food is just that good. They also work great for catering parties. Order tamales and just keep them on warm in the oven till ready to serve. Those are always a hit!

Just not good

By slateordie |

We had a family gathering here last month because the guest of honor liked their avocado ritas. So we went here and after hearing from everyone who ate and sampling some of the others' food, I can say please there are vastly superior Mexican places in Austin to patronize, go there instead. My boyfriend ordered a beef burrito. It came out cold. Not warm, cold. Like they were waiting on the other food and just put it out there to get cold. The chips were stale. My mother had the chicken mole. It was dry and I'm used to mole being pulled or shaved or something but this was one long dry piece of chicken with sauce thrown onto it. It looked like-I'm not going there. My stuffed pepper was wet and mushy and the breading was wet. It was probably by far one of the worst I've ever had. They managed to get two other family members' orders wrong. And the avocado ritas-not good. They really skimped on the alcohol you'd need about 5 gallons to get a buzz. I've had much better at another place not too far from there. If you really want good Mexican and I mean Tex-Mex or interior, there are much much better places to go.

Excellent Mexican Restaurant

By Gary S |

Excellent Mexican Restaurant. I was in the mood for a Mexican Shrimp cocktail. What I got was Campenchana shrimp octopus scallops avocado pico and horseradish on the side. One of the best I’ve ever had. My table was next to the expediter from the kitchen. So I saw the incredible dishes as left to be delivered to the tables. I wish I had more of an appetite. As it was I couldn’t finish my dish. It was delicious. I would return next time I’m in Austin.

Very authentic

By ERIC W |

We were there with a party of seven and each of us ordered something different. Every meal was wonderful. We all agreed it was very authentic Mexican food. They also had some specialty drinks that were very tasty. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff

Good, not great

By BluJnQueen |

I was misled by TripAdvisor reviewers who really liked this place & gave it high ratings. On a scale of 10, I'd give this place a 6.
