Fabulous Bakery

By TKHershey |

We needed to get some dessert, and we found this bakery online. We bought regular Cannoli, special Irish (St. Paddy's Day) Cannoli, Fruit Tart, and Eclair. I wish we lived nearby so that we could try a lot more! Everything we bought were delicious. Please see my photos and see what they offer!

A gem of a place in the old neighborhood

By jfadds |

Almost right next door to Chicago's best sub sandwich - Bari- is this throwback bakery filled with locals and suburbanites satisfying their urge for delicious bread, cookies, and my favorite-the many flavors of focaccia. We buy several and freeze them - they reheat beautifully and are delicious drizzled with extra virgin olive oil right out of the oven.

Old school Italian bakery with great pizza

By snacker |

I really enjoyed the Sicilian style pizza I had here, which was soft and cheesy with a delightfully crunchy crust. The focaccia is also really tasty but not like other focaccia: it has a soft, plush, dense crumb with no large air pockets. The outside is crisp, and it's light on the olive oil. It's $4.80 for a thick round cut into four pieces. The strawberry fruit tart I got was not good, with cloyingly sweet syrup and sour, unripe strawberries. So I would stick to the savory items next time. Cash only (there's an ATM outside). We didn't have too much trouble finding street parking.

Stick to the Cookies

By Desiree R |

Disappointed by the sfogliatella which was dense and chewy rather than light and crispy, flaky. The cookies were better.

Great Sandwiches, Bread & Cookies

By P.M. |

I ordered my sandwiches by phone and stopped in to pick them up. We had the Procciutto and the Turkey and both were divine (as always). The cookies and bread were also a 10. Highly recommend this spot!

Roadtrip

By Julie C |

We were looking for something different on our way to visit family and my husband found this place. I was not sure bc I am a picky eater but I went. Oh my, what a great choice. The pizza was the best I have ever had. And I love a good pastry! This place is great! Parking is tough as it is in downtown Chicago, we parked 3 blocks away. We liked it so such we stopped and had lunch on our return trip as well!

Classic Italiano Bakery

By Flyby0161 |

It’s like steeping back to the good old days. Freshly baked bread, freshly cooked Italian dishes, cookies - everything is worthy

Focaccia!

By Tony M |

I stopped by here before going to a nearby restaurant for lunch. It's a small set-up with tons of options, so you'll have your pick of some great bakery treats (breads, cookies, etc). They have sandwiches as well, which looked good - but I got a focaccia to go. BEST FOCACCIA EVER! So if nothing else, go here for that, but try other stuff too! I know I will go back to do so.

Definitely more bakery than pizzeria

By Allen21096 |

Noted for their baked goods D'Amato's Bakery also has pizzas that are in the top display case. They will heat them up for you to eat outside on the patio, or you can take them home to warm up.

Love the focaccia

By jfadds |

Many swear by the cookies- we love this place for their focaccia breads. Several kinds available- we like the plain tomato and the black olive. They freeze nicely and we reheat them at home with pasta

Destination Italian Bakery

By MarshBruce |

Famous. Iconic. Blue collar atmosphere. Wonderful selection of cookies and pastries. Note the large cannoli that has about 3 dozen insider it, great for a party.

excellent italian bread, and pizza

By veganator |

Place has been around forever, parking is rough but is definitely worth the trip for their Italian bread and pizza. you can feed an army with one of their pan pizza's, very good taste and while I'm not big on thick crust pizza I've gotta say theirs doesn't taste like anyone elses thick pan pizza, it's very "light". Remember this is a bakery not a restaurant.

Nothing makes it home (they were right!)

By Nphotographer22 |

The food takes me back to my childhood!!! The best cookies and the tomato pie!!!!! OMG!!!!!! Several classic selections and the employees are so amazing! I was told by a local nothing ever completely makes it home, they were so correct in this I ate one out of the orders on my way back. One thing to remember that I found out after they are CASH ONLY. They were very polite about telling about the atm outside but ave the 3.50 and bring cash.

Bread to die for!

By carwashguy |

They have a real COAL fired oven which makes the most incredible French and Italian breads. Their sandwiches are super cheap and good quality. The Foccacia is amazing.... Get the Cannolli's but if you are NOT eating them within a short time as for the shells separate. Family owned place since I was a kid.

Classic

By Chefajax |

Living in California, I feel deprived of certain things in my diet. Italian baked goods from that classic place is one of them. After walking in, I felt a rush of aromas hitting me, fresh baked bread, the sweet cookies, the pizza, and the espresso coffee brought a big smile on my face. Big Thanks for sharing your family's passion

Excellent Bakery

By Ellen B |

We just stopped for an early lunch. This place smells heavenly, their sandwiches and pizza are huge & delicious! I had a peppers & scrambled egg sandwich (delish), hubs had chicken sandwich (a little dry), granddaughter had sausage pizza (she demolished it) & SIL had a chicken Parmesan sandwich (yummy). Their bread is both a treat for the eyes & my belly!

The best Cannoli in Chicago....

By jgflys |

This place never ceases to amaze me. The minute you walk in the door your gonna wana bring home a boat load. The fresh breads, cookies, pastries, pizza, and more importantly the Cannolis. They are by far the best I've ever had. The Cannoli cake is also a must try. Its a little bit out of the city but so worth the drive. Once you get a taste you will become a regular without a doubt.

Best sfogliatelle west of New York

By Shari S |

Since my first sfogliatelle in New York's Little Italy, I've been on a disappointing quest to match the flavor and quality of my favorite pasty. D'Amato's did not disappoint. Perfectly flaky, a zillion layers, creamy custard with just a hint of citron. (Btw, I'm talking the true sfogliatelle, not the french-cream filled "lobster tail"- probably also wonderful, but not my goal). I called the day before to make sure they'd have them and sure enough, they had set some aside for me. I bought a half dozen and they were just as lovely the next day, warmed briefly at 250 on a metal sheet.

Great Italian bakery

By Allen21096 |

This is an old school Italian bakery in what used to be a real Italian neighborhood. They are primarily noted for baked goods and their cookies, breads and cannolis are among the best. They have sandwiches and they also have small pizzas that they display in the top display case, that you can have them warm up and take them outside and eat on the patio - al fresco, or you could take them home for an easy warm-up. I especially like the cookies and they have a fairly good assortment of them. The staff could be a bit friendlier. The only bad thing is they do NOT take credit cards. On street parking can be an issue, most people seem to park, throw on the flashers and run in.

The hidden gem in Chicago!

By columbiaangel |

Quick run to stock up for a trip but I was super impressed. Authentic, fresh, tasty, all amazing food. Wish we could have bought it all it was great 😃

Awesome Italian bakery

By Allen21096 |

I would really like to say that I have tried the pizzas and the foccacia bread, as well as their other breads, but I have yet to get past their great tasting cookies, the eclairs or the cannolis. Although they have a pretty steady selection of cookies, once in a while, they do something different, an example of which would be a cinnamon cookie. I'm a sucker for their "s" and "u" cookies, as well as their chocolate chip cookies. Sometime, though, be sure to try the eclairs - delicious! Also, the single cannolis are great, but for Christmas we did try the cannoli cake. Talk about rave reviews from the family. Great neighborhood bakery.

Best sandwiches on the planet.

By Mark S |

The sandwiches are outstanding. Soup is delicious. The girls working the counter are always friendly. Take the drive , it's worth the trip.

It's been 15 years since I was there, still a great choice.

By Dina M |

Order the chicken Parm was really good. Order the Caesar chicken sandwich, it was really good. Like the flavor of the cutlets. Really enjoyed the Napoleon for dessert.

Terrific & informative staff

By Allen21096 |

After Mass, we were on our way home thinking about making some spaghetti or lasagna at home. We decided to stop at D’Amato’s Bakery for bread. When asked which kind of bread might be the best for garlic bread, the girl behind the counter said that the foline would be best. So, it looked good and we got that. Naturally, when you are standing in a bakery with hundreds of tasty cookies and pastries, you are going to have to have something, so, we got a pound of cookies to go. The staff is helpful & friendly.

Best Cannoli in Chicago, don't miss it

By jgflys |

This is a favorite stop of ours everytime we make it to Chicago. The fresh breads, the cookies the pizza, and most importantly the Cannolis. The Cannoli cake is also a great choice. I can't say enough good about this place. The staff is excellent as well. Its just a little ways from downtown but so worth the trip.

Best Bakery-Style Pizza & Italian Cookies in Chicago!

By ChitownTime |

I recently discovered D'Amato's through a long-time customer, I've been back at least once a week for the past few months. Real, authentic bakery-style pizza reminds me of my Italian grandmother's enormous handmade trays that I grew up with...delicious plain, or with the sausage, mushrooms and veggies. The service is warm, friendly and efficient...the entire staff is always welcoming and sends you on your way quickly with your food. I'm such a fan that I catered a recent family pre-wedding gathering from D'Amato's with a tray of pizza, a 3-foot Italian sub and multiple salads...all excellent! I also recently had the catering folks deliver 3 trays of incredible cookies and the "giant cannoli" to my wedding reception for a late night snack...the guests loved the cookies and couldn't stop talking about them the next day. Thank you, Maria, who helped put this order together! PS - Don't forget your cash when visiting!

Good everything!

By sleepster |

Love the bread, love the cookies, love the sandwiches and love the staff. This bakery is often busy for good reason. It has been around a long time and is still going strong. It is a dying breed for locally baked bread. This is mostly a bakery and a place to take away. They do have very limited seating. They do have the ability to make coffee. They do have a limited selection of Italian Ice. Go here to take away real bread and other bakery delights.

Best Italian Bakery!!

By Sharon S |

My husband grew up in Chicago and has gone to D'Amato's for years. Now every time we visit the city on vacation, it's our first stop. He has me hooked on the pizza bread. Thick, soft bread/crust and the best sauce & cheese. Italian breads, cookies, cannoli, apple slices, etc. Everything is great. Highly recommend this small neighborhood bakery. But be careful, you'll want to buy everything.

All this--and submarine sandwiches, too!

By Taylor B |

Just when I thought D'Amato's Bakery couldn't do anything more to satisfy its legion of loyal customers who have been lining up early for fresh loaves of bread and chocolate covered cannoli and Italian cookies and tomato-topped focaccia and French bread pizza for more than 45 years...well, maybe one of these days they'll begin to accept credit cards and build a parking lot next door. For now, however, we'll settle for doing business with the best Italian bakery in Chicago. Located at 1124 West Grand Avenue at May Street in the West Town neighborhood, D'Amato's is a name to be trusted. It seems they deliver fresh baked breads to nearly every delicatessen and grocery store in the city. For those of us who are lucky enough to beat the crowd in the morning, there is a huge variety of breads, cookies, cannolis, pizza, salads, pastries and submarine sandwiches to choose from. Yes, subs. D'Amato's has added a new and wildly popular page to its menu. Old-timers swear that D'Amato's cannolis are the best in town. Apparently they always will be the bakery's signature item. But the subs are becoming very popular, too...Italian, turkey and cheese, ham and cheese, meatball, roast beef, Caprese, tuna salad, corn beef and Swiss, prosciutto and bocconcini on D'Amato's fresh bread. Another thing's for sure: Nobody delivers bread to D'Amato's.

been going for years

By frostizzy |

Good Bread, been going for years, but the last two times I wonder my loaf of bread tasted stale and they sold me cannolis that where for sure stale I could not even bite into the shell- how can you do that? they are $2.00 a piece ...not sure If I will ever go back

A quick stop for chocolate eclairs

By Allen21096 |

After eating Japanese across the street, we walked over to D'Amato's Bakery for dessert. When you walk in, you are overwhelmed by the pastries, cannoli, chocolate eclairs, breads and so much more. Being two days before Thanksgiving, it was busy, especially for orders for the next day. We picked up several chocolate eclairs. They are among the best eclairs in Chicago. The staff is friendly and efficient.

Great Italian bakery

By David C |

Come for the canollis and a loaf of fresh bread, stay for Maria's awesome sandwiches. My fave: the veggie with fresh mozz, artichokes and hot giardiniera. Delish.

Horrible Customer Service

By Mercedes H |

They did not fulfill my catering order totaling almost $300 by telling me when I went to pick it up at 10am that morning that they didn’t have the chicken part of my order - the main course!!!!!! Read my Yelp review attached.

The Real Taste of Chicago!

By msegan543 |

You may not be familiar with their type of Pizza. You may be put off by the way it looks! It is the best Pizza in Chicago! Ask anybody standing in the long line. If you are a cookie person you've come to the right place for desert.

Authentic both in food and service

By DADAndreachicago |

Each time I visit the counter service in organic and appreciated. It is great to see people who actually enjoy what they do and the ties into the food being produced from this place. Huge fan of the focaccia and willing to travel for the taste of it!! Well done overall...

The best cookies & awesome chocolate eclairs

By Allen21096 |

D'Amato's is located at 1124 W. Grand Ave. on the northeast corner of Grand Ave. & May St. in the West Town neighborhood. I can safely admit that I love their cookies, they are really outstanding, but we have tried their cannoli. One item that they have that is most unusual and that they roll out for holidays, is the cannoli cake, which is essentially a large cannoli with about 30 mni-cannoli inside. They do need a days notice for that large cannoli. It is a great way to share the cannoli with family. They offer pizzas, paninis and subs. They do not accept credit cards. Oh, I forgot, the chocolate eclairs - to die for!

Great Bakery

By Davanrn |

We traveled here from downtown. This bakery sits next to our favorite Sub shop Bari. Easy to get to on Grand. Great selection of bread and specialty Italian bakery items. Nice people. Excellent quality.

Old School Mom and Pop Bakery

By Shanayshanae |

This spot is cash only but has atm near by. Food was amazing. I got a meatball sub cost me $7.75 for 12inches cheese and jardinera is extra.

Meatball sub you have to try!

By Mark Richardson |

Saw a restaurant review for D'amato's Bakery on TV at our hotel and decided to try them. We were glad we did! Excellent fresh bread, desserts, pizza and sandwiches. I had the meatball sub. The sauce was so good I had to use the bread to sop up every bit! Definitely worth trying if you are in Chicago.

Cannoli's!

By MAbendhoff |

I swear I've gained 5 pounds because D'Amato's is just around the corner. I've been coming here since I was a kid. My parents used to pick up bread and cannoli's from here growing up. Now that we live in the city, we continue to come here. Their cannoli's are the best in the city. Perfect filling with shells that are just the right thickness and have the perfect crunch. In addition they have a great bakery with outstanding cookies and baked goods. Give their subs a try too - you will not be disappointed.

Outstanding Italian bakery, sandwich & pizza shop

By Allen21096 |

D'Amato's Bakery never ceases to amaze. I happen to love their assortment of cookies, especially their "S" and "U" cookies dipped in chocolate. But their cannolis are outstanding, as well. I was buying a pound of cookies when I saw that they had a meatball and Italian beef combination sandwich. I thought that I had to try that for lunch. I added mozzarella cheese and sweet peppers, and along with the cookies headed home. We shared the sandwich and we both thought that it was an excellent lunch choice. Oh, as far as the cookies, I didn't mention them, but I am eating them! Remember that D'Amato's Bakery is cash only. A small price to pay.

Excellent choice for cookies and more

By Allen21096 |

We stopped at D'Amato's Bakery after a meeting and could not get past the baked goods and cookies. The interior is small. To the right are display cases filled with great looking & tasting Italian cookies. To the left are display cases with the refrigerated items and more. We opted for a pound of cookies today and picked out our assortment. Each has been more delicious than the last. The prices are reasonable for the quality and taste. D'Amato's offers subs and outdoor sidewalk dining along the Racine Ave. side of the building. The staff always seems to be friendly, but with such good cookies to nibble on, why would you be anything but cheery and friendly!

Great pizza, great bread and fantastic sub sandwiches

By Acdman |

D'Amato's pizza is a unique take with an influence of the old days. I've been coming here since I was a kid and the pizza has not changed, still perfect. Sausagewas added, but I consider that an enhancement. They have everything you can dream about when it comes to fine Italian baked goods. Connolis, arancini, cookies long bread, short bread, sliced bread, amazing sub-sandwiches and much more. No credit cards here. The food is made the old world way and payment runs counter to that. Stop by and I promise you won't be disappointed. Here's a hint, right next door is a delightful Italian grocery store which carries all those hard to find items and has a treasure of a deli/meat counter. So it's a two for one deal here. Parking is very flexible and somewhat easy, leave your hazzard lights on. Enjoy.

The Italian cookies are great!

By Allen21096 |

After lunch, we stopped at D'Amato's Bakery for dessert. Make no mistake they have great tasting breads, pizzas and cannolis, but today it was just for the cookies. And D'Amatp's does not disappoint. Whether chocolate chip cookies with the chips either inside or on top, or sprinkle cookies, or the chocolate drop cookies, or the "S" or the "U" cookies, they have a great selection The chocolate is totally awesome. D'Amato's is worth stopping for a pound of a great selection of cookies.

Very good!

By Kathy R |

Simple and wonderful food! The focaccia is amazing! Quick service and standing room only. Get it to go. The place was full of locals, evidence of how great their bakery is!

Best foccacia in town - bar none!!!

By bradb5300 |

Nothing beats the flavors of the coal fired ovens. The bakery has a wide assortment of the usual breads and cookies, but I go for the pizza and foccacia. Some of the foccacia: Tomato, tomato and onion, tomato n artichoke, tomato n cheese, tomato and olive. The place is small and can get crowded; parking is a hassle; but its all worth it. The prices are reasonable- I'd even pay a little more (not that I want to) but the quality and flavors are top-notch. Make the trip from anywhere and get a foccacia!! Pop them in the oven for 5 minutes to get the crust back a bit. Serve sliced with your favorite Italian supper, or slice flat and create gourmet sandwiches with friends.

Simply, Excellent!

By Allen21096 |

We had stopped at Bari’s Subs immediately next door to D’Amato’s Bakery for something for lunch but we decided that we had to stop at D’amato’s Bakery for a pound of their unbelievably delicious cookies. . We picked out our choices and nearly all had some chocolate on them. Two of the great chocolate cookies that we particularly like are the “S” and “U”. Both are a sandwich style, in those shapes, which are dipped in chocolate and covered with sprinkles, as well as a chocolate filling. We also saw a great idea for parties, as D’Amato’s does a cannoli cake which is a huge cannoli shell with 30 mini cannoli inside. For $60.00, it will go a long way at a family party. As always, the staff was efficient and friendly. Since D’Amato’s is “cash only: there is an ATM located on the outside west wall on the northeast corner of May St. & Grand Ave.

Great assortment of baked goods with an Italian flair

By Allen21096 |

We stopped at D'amato's Bakery on Mother's Day morning after going to church. They have a great assortment of cookies, eclairs, pizzas and breads. There is also a place to eat along the west side of the building on a sidewalk patio and you can get sub sandwiches. The only thing to remember is that D'Amato's Bakery does not take credit cards. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the prices are reasonable, especially for the quality.

FABULOUS OLD SCHOOL ITALIAN BAKERY

By Julianne C |

BRING PLENTY OF CASH!!! You will want two of everything and they do not take plastic. The pizza is particularly fabulous, and the assortment of pastries will knock your socks off. IT is very much a neighborhood joint so enjoy the energy as well.

The best silciia pizza amazing bread and pastries been coming since I was kid as my parents .

By Lori G |

The best Sicilian pizza straight from the old country style. Pasta dinners are incomplete without their bread. The Italian pastries are to die for . My family has been coming here since they opened for decades. Now my children go there. It’s wee the real Italians go for their bread pizza and pastry. If you like cannoli , pan pizza, crusty real Italian breads, cookies, and pastry, this is for you. Parking is tricky but worth the wait .

Still the best

By wildlifeship |

My father use to walk to this bakery and get a slice of pizza and then later I did. In the 90's I would drive my sons from the suburbs for some, now I take my granddaughter, it is that good. The cookies are fresh and delicious. The people that work there are friendly and it feels good to go back to the old neighborhood which is newer by the day.

Great Bakery for Cannoli's

By Steve H |

We looked on the Internet for "best cannoli's in Chicago", and D'Amato's came to the top of the list. We took a bus from downtown just to get two cannoli's, and we're not disappointed! That's all we bought there, but after they recommended a great Italian restaurant nearby for dinner that served their bread (see my review of LaScarola), we got to try their sweet French and sourdough breads with our meal. I can see why this place is highly recommended. I'd go back if I were visiting Chicago again.

Best Bakery bread

By llkoolj40 |

We were in town to visit family and passed this bakery and decided to stop.I am glad we did. The pizza was the best I've tasted. We also couldn't pass up the bread or cookies. Everything was delicious. The bakery has a coal fired oven which is why the bread is soft on the inside with a crispy crust. It was so good that we went back 3 times during our stay. Very close to downtown as well.

One of the best in Chicago!

By hannahmarie73 |

Delicious bread and desserts, D'Amato's is one of our go to bakeries for fluffy bread and an occasional treat. From cannoli's to cakes, D'Amatos has a nice little variety to chose from.

A slice of Chicago history

By Joseph P |

Here is a Grand Avenue Italian bakery in the old Chicago style. The place has been here for at least three generations, consistently turning our loaves of traditional country bread, 1940s style Italian Bakery Pizza, sub sandwiches, and cookies and pastries. Folks line up for their sub sandwiches. These come as quickly as they can make them on their own sandwich baguette, and filled with quality ingredients. I can only attest for the Italian Sub, which is possibly the best in the city. They sell their pizza by the slice or the sheet, squares with a thick soft crust, a thin layer of red sauce and cheese, sausage, pepperoni, or various vegetable toppings. The pizza is light and bursting with flavor, very satisfying. The make a damn good focaccia. They have a country baguette with a cracker crust and a substantial interior that will hold up well to any sauce. There are other loaves as well. Their sandwich loaf is an honest loaf of white bread. There are cases of fresh cookies and pastries. They have a few tables outside and a small counter inside, but most folks carry out.
