Historic spot 5 generations

By Sara G. |

If you love historic restaurants with a rich family legacy, Louis and Dan Oyster Bar is a must-visit. We had the pleasure of meeting Kai, the 5th generation “in training,” who shared stories about the restaurant’s history. Hearing about his great-great-great grandfather’s plate collection added a charming, personal touch to our dinner. The food was equally memorable. I ordered the sockeye salmon special, and it was perfectly cooked, fresh and delicious. The Parmesan oysters were another highlight – yummy and savory. You’ll love it here.

Simple place that's worth the visit

By Gary S |

If you love fresh oysters, you have to visit this place. The restaurant is a historic site from the early 1900s, needing a little TLC, but where the oysters are the star. And if you go during happy hour (4 to 6pm), you can get them at a very reasonable price. The fried calamari was the only disappointment during our; good but tiny portion. The New England clam chowder was creamy and meaty. We had one of the specials as the main course; tasty grilled Columbia River salmon on a bed of wild rice and grilled zucchini. We also enjoyed several of the local draft beers on tap. Finally, our waitress (Holly) was a joy; knowledgeable, engaging and great service.

Oyster Bar!

By Andi H |

We ordered 2 dozen oysters and the captains platter. Everything, and I mean everything was so good. I have not had fried fish anywhere in the PNW (this includes the beach) that was perfectly fried, light and crisp, not dense and soggy like so many places. They had a great selection of oysters, served the right way. We actually went to the beach the following weekend for more oysters (thinking it would get better) oh how we were wrong, but it's great that we found this place, 10 minutes from home!

Historic place with wonderful food

By KBaylady |

We have eaten at 3 restaurants in downtown Portland. This was. by far, the best food and atmosphere. Located in old town, a diverse part of town, this photogenic location has charm

Try the Monster!

By C7124MXkim |

If you have to be in the area, and you like oysters, this is a great place to go. The staff is very nice, it's very casual, the food is really good. For $5 indulge in an Oregon Monster oyster which is an 11 year old from Netarts Bay. We had one raw and one cooked, both were excellent. The ambience of the old place and it's top notch nostalgic decorations made for a fun photo shoot for me as well.

Great spot!

By chrissyb622 |

Wonderful food, attentive service, good prices. Fresh Kumamoto oysters too! Good wine and beer selection. Sourdough bread the best I’ve had in a long time. Went there for lunch, and may very well return for dinner. We had the oysters on the half shell and clam chowder made just right... lots of clams and not overloaded with potatoes. Don’t miss this Gem!

Fresh oysters

By diinslc |

It was fun to find an oyster po'boy in Portland for lunch. In addition the raw oysters were incredibly fresh and very delicious. it was fun to try all six different kinds.

With their name boosting oysters... what do I do? I wimped out and ordered Fish and Chips

By RSNN |

I walked all over Portland and came to this famous place that I have walked by so many times. At least I finally popped in last year to have a few drinks at the bar you can see crammed with people as you walk by the front window. Why not it is an iconic landmark. A slice of old Portland history from the early 1900's Last month I decided I would finally go inside and have dinner. With a name boasting Oysters... what do I do? I wimp out and order fish and chips. I had never tried oysters before and I guess I should do so the next time I decide to celebrate and have a meal here. Okay, next time I must try the Oysters. The fish and chips were very good and the decor is intensive. I went into a long back room . the walls were decks out in a few pictures. But mostly those walls were totally plastered in decorative plates. Plates with fish on them and plates with all kinds of other things featured on them. so there is plenty to look at while you eat. I saw a few ship models and a few nautical items here and there.

Fun atmosphere and excellent food.

By Kitty M |

Oysters, Oyster, and, well, more oysters. I went just to eat oysters and they were delicious. Such a variety. I am sorry I did not take photos of the food, but I was hungry. Charming building and atmosphere.

yummy and fun

By Teresa M |

we bussed/maxed it downtown as it was in the 20's this morning and wanted to take a break from cycling in frigid weather....masked up, first we went to dan/louis oyster bar for lunch, and sat in the cozy bar.......much of the staff had festive holiday clothes on and it was fun, plus the bartender had antlers on too.....a few of the wachsmuth family were dressed up and showing another young kid in the family the ropes on this busy saturday. ..i had a bottle of bud, and my partner had a hot buttered rum...next we shared the smoked salmon chowder and the louie salad with smoked salmon.....we watched the bartender as she made spanish coffees with flair....we had so much fun with those sitting at the bar from our table, and the staff who would come in taking glasses and dishes away....it was so festive, and they were excited that santa con was today later on....we love the drinks, food, and staff, and will always support one of our fave places to eat in portland....thx so much!

Guys it was delicious

By Orkhan H |

Yes, it was just delicious. It was very tasty. I did not enjoy food like that for a long time. This Simple saute Capitan's Plate just blow my mind. Thanks

menu on trip advisor misleading

By AVERAGE JOE |

We picked this restaurant based on menu online on tripadvisor. It was a totally different menu, online have maybe 5x items listed and seemed to look very good. Got there and all they have is a bar menu. I had the captains choice, which was very fresh seafood on a light batter and tasted very good, but not worth the $25. Served with lots of fries that were good also. Told waitress about menu and she seemed concerned and said she would fix it. If you didn't know this is also right next to voodoo donuts.

Cozy place but average food

By annesophieg356 |

Cozy historical place with a nice atmosphere but the fish and chips was not impressive. Small bits of fish, no filet and fries probably not home made. I had much better fish and chips in this part of America. Maybe oysters are better ?

Terrific Seafood! Friendly Service! Old-School Ambiance!

By AlfredEileen |

When we’re in Portland, we always go to Dan & Louis. The setting is classic, the seafood is superb and reasonably priced, and the ambiance and service are excellent. Our favorite tactic is to pop in some late afternoon and eat ourselves silly. For this visit, our server graciously helped us select three of the six types of oysters on the half-shell: two each of the Eld Inlet, Hama Hama, and Pine street varieties from Washington state. Each oyster had a unique combination of briny, sweet, and plump. We followed this with clam chowder and oyster stew: both appropriately salty and sweet, and thoroughly satisfying. Our server -- a smart and pleasantly sassy women -- was clearly in charge. Our fellow diners were food-focused and down to earth. With the sun streaming through the windows, our oysters accompanied by local wine and the bar full of happy diners, we were truly in seventh heaven.

yummy and fun

By Teresa M |

we wanted to return yesterday for lunch with friends all masked up, and ate indoors finally....we sat in the bar area, and i ordered a heineken, and my partner had a moscow mule...our friends had coffee, and ginger beer...next, i had the seafood louie with salmon, my partner had a cup of chowder and the halibut with rice and squash....our friends had a bowl of clam chowder....it was cozy inside and safety was at a premium during the pandemic....we eventually took our masks off when comfortalbe.....the food/drink is superb, and the staff is the friendliest....be sure to tip big during the pandemic....thx so much!!!!!

Food was okay

By Anita I |

Food was a little underwhelming, we had fish tacos and shrimp cocktail. My margarita was pretty good though.

Surprize!

By Paul S |

Wife and I stopped by after taking a walking tour. Ordered sauteed Captain's plate. The cream sauce was fantastic. The seafood(shrimp, cod, clam, oyster) was fresh, and cooked to perfection

Delicious seafood

By Eva C |

Stumbled upon this restaurant after walking through the Portland Saturday Market. Great variety of seafood offered and everything we tried was delicious! We asked for a side of bread and were delighted with the homemade sourdough.

Eclectic ambiance, fresh oysters!

By Heather S. |

Well this isn't a place you can easily describe. It really needs to be seen to believe. The walls are loaded with nautical themed decorations. The staff were very welcoming and we got the luxury of sitting next to a cute service dog. We only came in for the oysters so it wasn't a long visit. We each had a drink and a half dozen of the coldest, freshest oysters. So delicious! Dan & Louis was a recommendation and so worth it. If we make it back to Portland, we will be stopping in again!

If you can only go to one restaurant in Portland, let this be the one.

By mwbudd |

This restaurant has become a must-visit every time I travel through Portland—it’s a staple in my itinerary. On our recent visit, my dining companion enjoyed the house salad topped with bay shrimp and paired it with a cup of clam chowder. I opted for the Traditional Fry, featuring calamari, prawns, and cod, complemented by a cup of salmon chowder. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and exceptionally flavorful. It’s the kind of meal that leaves a lasting impression—and keeps me looking forward to my next visit to Portland.

Best seafood restaurant in Oregon

By Ron Keffer |

I have patronized this restaurant for 50 yeard. I use go live in Portland and since I moved , and return to visit, I always make it a point to visit and dine. Love this place.

Ok

By Altagold |

Interesting venue....sat at the bar. I think we were hoping for a good seafood restaurant. The ambiance was ok, but service a little strange. We had fish tacos which again were just ok. Hard to review, as just an non event.

Underwhelmed by Oysters

By SeasonedFoodie |

Just landed in Portland. Came in to check out the oysters. Good location. However, these aren't jumbo oysters: too skimpy on the ingredients to be Oysters Rockefeller, and definitely not worth a 25 minute wait. V

Dishonest

By tej70 |

Went it to get a couple of cups of clam chowder. Made a mistake and gave the waiter a 50 instead of a 20 for a $16 bill. Told him to keep the change thinking it was a $20. Nothing from the server that I was giving a $34 tip. Obviously my fault, but you expect more honesty from the establishment. Stupid mistake on my part compounded by a dishonest server.

Oyster/Chowder Sea Food lovers destination

By Rick N |

We sat at the bar and ordered an oyster assortment, oysters rockefella, oyster stew, clam chowder, and salmon chowder. All were in the ranks with any I have had in San Francisco, Monterrey, Boston,Maine & Alaska. 100% worth the stop. Think 7th generation family run.

Bad salad and poor chowder

By Dave Payant |

I went to the Saturday market for fun and thought I would get a sit down lunch at the Oyster Bar. I ordered the “house” salad. What appeared was a handful of Spring Mix lettuce right out of the supermarket plastic bag. A plastic cup of dressing on the side. It did have two thin slices of cucumber and a teaspoon of what looked like chopped dried tomatoes in the middle. I expect a house salad to have some flair and show the chef is proud of what he does. No creativity or pride here. Now the salmon chowder. Heavy, heavy cream with some pleasing spices but where is the salmon? Did some one just say “salmon” while the were Making it? I associate chowder with chunks of potatoes, corn and other vegetables in a light cream base. This stew was too heavy, rich and lacked the classics chowder ingredients.

Yum

By BecksReview2014 |

Was visiting Portland to see my aunt and we stopped in for a quick bite. Split some delicious fish taco and incredible smoked salmon chowder. Will definitely be back again for oysters.

AWESOME

By Sara H |

I have been here once before a few years ago and will absolutely return. The food is delicious, staff is friendly and accommodating, and the ambiance is so fun! We were there on a sunny Saturday, so the market was busy and live music was playing. Simply wonderful!

Great Seafood!

By 2Calgarians |

We cam efor dinner to Dan and Louis and we really enjoyed the food, drinks and service. The lady (we believe she is the owner), was amazing!

Great Lunch

By JKHengel |

My husband and I read a lot of reviews before visiting this restaurant, and we are so glad we went! The food was great (try the clam chowder) and the staff was friendly. There is inside and outdoor seating (great for people watching). Lunch prices were reasonable

we biked downtown for lunch yesterday to dan/louis oyster bar...masked up for phase 1 covid 19 re-opening, we sat outside and had a heiniken, and my partner had a guiness....next, we shared the salmon chowder, and sourdough bread that had a good crunch...delicious chowder...after that, we each a had crab louie....tasty as ever...be sure to tip well during these challenging times...thx so much!

Fresh Seafood and nice ambience

By rsphillygirl |

We stopped by for a late lunch. Great selection of local beers and fresh seafood. Friendly servers and generous portions, the oysters and clams I ordered were perfectly fried. Parking is at a premium so be prepared to walk a block.

Put this on your "Must Try" List

By Michele W |

Our large group descended on this place for dinner an it ended up being one of the best dining experiences ever. The food was great. We talked about the "stuff" on the walls almost the entire night and the service was literally unforgettable! Fish tacos were great and others were impressed with the smoked salmon. Will definitely come again.

/The dark, historic, fresh seafood joint I look for when traveling

By WYNomad |

This restaurant rambles throughout the first floor of a historic downtown Portland building. Every wall sports historic photos of the generations of family owners, the local fishing industry, etc. There are 2 bars--an oyster bar and a bar bar. We sat at the latter, in a room with additional small tables and windows out to the street. Our bartender who was knowledgeable about the local brews on tap and the fresh oyster offerings. Our oyster sampler was fresh and varied. The Caesar salad which was refreshingly crisp with a delicious dressing. The crab stew was DELICIOUS.as were the steamed mussels and clams. This is a restaurant that lets the fresh seafood star in the dishes without getting fussy.

Lucky find!!

By Karen R |

We were wandering around Portland on foot, and came accoss this gem. Great bar, great food and really reasonable pricing. This place has been open for over 100 years... and they still got it. We had clam chowder, a crab louis salad, and an order of fried clams and fries. Everything was really good. Wish we were staying in Portland longer do we could eat there again.

Lots of history and good food

By BartLasVegas_Nevada |

Fun place for dinner sitting outside in the middle of a pedestrian street in historic downtown. Tried a number of things. The fish tacos and salmon on top of a salad were especially good.

Tasty food friendly service

By helena218 |

We had some raw oysters, oysters Rockefeller, sauté prawns and the gumbo. All were tasty. Atmosphere was fun and the service was great and friendly.

Nice restaurant in interesting surroundings

By der_blaue_reiter |

The restaurant in the old town has a very good menu for oysters, especially fish dishes and a good selection of beer and wine. The restaurant is very comfortably furnished inside and also has outdoor seating on the terrace. The prices are reasonable and there are very good happy hour offers. The staff are very helpful and open-minded.

A real treat

By Penny H |

The line was too long at Voodoo Donuts was too long,so we decided to do lunch here. My husband loved the gumbo. My grandson had the smoked salmon fish & chips. I shared a chip and we both agreed it was really a great smoky flavor. I had an extremely tasty Cheeseburger, a real surprise for a seafood restaurant. We will be back to have gumbo and try their cioppino. Our waiter was efficient and pleasant.

Great oyster bar

By Spencer-Chun |

Came across this restaurant in passing but really enjoyed the oysters , clam chowder, clams and crab Louie salad... Went back on Monday and found out happy hour prices all day!

Outstanding oysters but give fried fish a miss

By Lily933 |

This is a hundred year old character restaurant. It is in the seedier part of town. The service was unbelievably great if you get a lively middle aged woman. The food is good and oysters outstanding. Do not get the ‘everything’ fry. For $26 you do not get much seafood. It was supposed to be 5 types so we expected a good helping and were disappointed

great

By Teresa M |

we returned here for lunch saturday and sat outside....i had a estrella jalisco, and my partner had a stell artois...next we shared both a shrimp louie and a salmon louie...the food/drink was excellent...the atmosphere was festive outside....the staff was great...kai was the staff person....

Perfect Saturday!!

By Janice H |

Can't control the weather but it was gorgeous! We sat outside under an umbrella and enjoyed wonderful draft beer and the most incredible freshly prepared seafood. Fish n chips with smoked salmon! Cioppino was awesome with so much whole seafood. Service was excellent. Thank you Ashley! Make this a stop!!!

Wonderful place to eat

By Puffkins |

My family and I ate there this last Saturday evening. This was a memorable occasion for us as it was a very favorite place for us to eat when my parents were alive. It had been many years since we have eaten there. The restuarant has been in Portland for over 100 years and it was like walking into a place where time has stood still. All the wonderful memorabilia, photos, etc. are still on the walls. Food was excellent and the waiter we had was top notch. We couldn't have asked for better. It was a memorable occasion for my wife and our three grown children and their spouses. Excellent evening!!

Local, old school fish restaurant

By Mary L |

Went here with a large work group for dinner. Although it was a bit old and dated the food was great. The oysters were fantastic and we all enjoyed our entrees. The fish was fresh and well prepared. I would go back

Now I'm A Fan of Oysters

By Fluffyplo |

I was not a fan of oysters until I came to Dan and Louis Oyster Bar. Their 1/2 dozen oyster plate is good for a novice oyster eater like me, to see the kind of oyster of your liking.

Husband visited 60 years ago

By jackocalgary_AB |

This was our sole reason for stopping in Portland. Menu, apparently, hasn’t changed much. Went for lunch and sat on patio with our dogs. Very friendly waitress. Good food: I had fish tacos that were very small but tasty; should have ordered the three! Husband had the po boy that he said was very good. In a bit of a tough part of downtown but all seemed harmless just homeless.

historic place with good eats

By petlovr67 |

Came here for lunch when in Portland area. We ordered po boy sandwiches which were very good. Service was good and the wait was not long at all. Liked the nostalgia of this place and looking at all of the pictures of how this place got started. Our waiter said that this family still owns this place so liked the idea of how they kept this going for many generations.

Oysters were great, service was crap

By Sheryl A |

I haven't been here in a few years but have always enjoyed. The oysters didn't disappoint, although the price seemed a lot higher than I recall in the past. We did a sampler and really enjoyed all of them. The service really took away from the experience. We arrived about 830pm on a Friday and it was busy but there were several open tables. It took at least 10 minutes for a waitress to even make contact with us. And once we finished our meal, we couldn't find her anywhere. No doubt, we waited 20 min just to get our bill. We asked another staff member and he said he couldn't help us. Really took away from the experience. Claim chowder was good, and side salad was boring as can be. Hardly any other vegetables on it (advertised with cucumber, radish and red peppers -- just two incredibly thin slices of each on a very big bed of lettuce - basically, not as much a salad but a big plate of lettuce.

A Portland favorite

By Candee J |

An old town, old time, long lasting family restaurant! Good service, good food, good memories! You will enjoy the experience!

Fabulous food!

By Trenda B |

A must for a great selection of oysters on the half shell and poboys! We never miss this restaurant while in town. Has bar area plus separate seating area for those that prefer not to sit in the bar. Great wait staff, clean, and easy to get to.

Yum!

By Annika S |

Best oysters I've ever had! Found this place just on a walk through town and so happy we did! Martini, oysters, chowder, and service was amazing!

Just Perfect

By Timothy C |

This not a luxe place. But, everything about it is just perfect: the fresh shucked oysters, fried seafood, great selection of beers, stiff drinks, adequate wine selection, old style service -- you feel like all the servers are family, a warren of dining spaces and bars, and a touch of Portland history. Just a few blocks from the Willamette River and around the corner from Voodoo Donuts, this place has been lovingly run by the same family for over a century. Regulars abound -- a good sign! Go on Monday or Tuesday when Happy Hour is all day. They have picnic table seating outside when the Portland weather cooperates.

Nice Dive

By David T |

One of the oldest family owned restaurants in Portland (some 100 years). The place is a dive, but in a good way (I like dive places). The place and the area could be cleaner. (The area is a bit seedy). And the restaurant shows its age. The oysters are fresh (well, I've never gotten sick yet) and the clam chowder is pretty good. The folks there are nice, I thought the service was very good. When in Portland, I do like to drop by Dan and Louis.

Disappointing dinner

By Cameron K |

We ran into a couple at Tasty and Alder that recommended this spot. The oysters were good, Bloody Mary ok but the chowder and fried seafood was not passable. Service was also good.

Daughters first oyster slam!

By Hiedir42 |

Oysters were fresh and yummy!! Excellent choice for my daughters first try and my husband enjoyed the beer, too.

excellent seafood

By Teresa M |

we returned to have lunch after a political event downtown...i had a heineken and my partner had the cocktail rasberry truffle....hit the spot....next we each had the salmon louie, and she had the salmon chowder...the food was excellent as always, and the staff is funny and efficient....very friendly and quick...thx so much...

Oysters and more

By Arden W |

After wandering through the Portland market, we were ready for a cold drink and something to eat. Lots of seating inside and out. The fresh oysters were excellent, as was the smoked fish and oyster appetizer.

Nice patio and good food

By Julie D |

We stopped here for lunch after taking the Underground Tour a couple blocks away. Michelle was our server and she was friendly. Service was a little slow, but I think she was the only one serving because we were there for a late lunch. Menu selection was limited but food was very good. My husband enjoyed their clam chowder and oysters Rockerfeller. One of my son's had their calamari meal which was rice flour crusted and my other son had their Tillamook Cheddar burger. I had a small house salad with shrimp. Only disappointment was that I wanted their 1/2 lb of steamed clams but they weren't available.

yummy

By Teresa M |

we returned for lunch and sat outside...had a heinikin and my prtner had a guinness...next, i had the crab louie salad, and she had the salmon louie salad....the drink and food is exceptional and all the historic details of this fine place...been coming since 1977...the staff is the best..thx so much...

Quirky local place that gets crowded quickly

By andrew02459 |

Wonderful oysters here...ate like there was no end to the feast! The large room is closed at lunch during the week: we ate at one of the two back rooms...nice and quiet, easy to talk across the table, yet the place was mostly (and stayed mostly) full while we were there. The clam chowder is a wonderful smokey one, and there was plenty of options for my celiac/gluten-free wife who enjoyed herself. Lots of beers on offer too, as well as good overall fish choices. Even when the front rooms are not open, you can wander through them: loads of historical pictures of the owners and the area.

Just go

By CLC |

I grew up going to this place and loved it . After hearing about the business declining over the years and a possible closure . We planned our day to go here for lunch and also go to the Chinese gardens . The service was top notch and so was the food . We had a shrimp po boy and the clam chowder and a few craft beers . We loved it and everyone was so appreciative that we were there in support of them . I highly recommend them. We were happy that they had a busy lunch business .

Nothing Fancy and Nothing Better

By RNPSHP |

No frills traditional oyster bar with a long history. If you want to feel you are getting an authentic Portland experience, this is a must. The staff are great and the oysters are magic. Good vfm too - and how many oysters bars can you say that about!

Nostalgic Visit to a Famous Eatery in Portland, OR

By Cooper1941 |

Food continues to be very good as I remember. This historic significance of this restaurant is what brings many people back. The waitress shared that her husband is the fourth generation owner/chef with their kids who help out on weekends being the 5th. I have eaten here in the 50's, 60's and 70's so I was glad to eat there again and find the place serving good food and good memories!! Thank you!

Great friendly service

By Fawnbrindle |

Stopped in for seafood. Dungeness crab was wonderful. Our server was very attentive and even put on the football game for us to watch while eating. Nice place!

Historic venue with good food

By travgal0766 |

My friend and I enjoyed our meal here where we wandered in by chance looking for something close to our hotel. From the street, the place looked tiny, but it is actually a maze of small rooms each decorated differently. There are lots of historic pictures on the walls making it interesting to look around. We had the salmon chowder which was delicious, thick and hot. We also enjoyed the oysters Rockefeller and the baked oysters. Everything was good, and came in a timely way. Until the end of the meal. Our waitperson disappeared- maybe she had too many tables to see to? But we eventually had to get up and find staff to receive our check. Not a good note on which to end a meal that had been so good up to that point. Despite this glitch, I would eat here again.

yummy and fun

By Teresa M |

we wanted to return to dan/louis for lunch yesterday, as they re-opened again!...we were all masked up and sat outdoors.......i had a heineken, and my partner had a mug of root beer...next, i had the salmon louie salad, and my partner had the catch of the day, salmon, wild rice, and veggies....the staff was fabulous, and efficient....she was real funny and genuine, as it was hopping...the food is excellent as always....the closed off street helps with noise control and walking....be sure to tip big during these challenging times....thx so much!

Great seafood

By KB9MNN |

The oysters were to die for. They were fresh and Dan & Louis had a good varietal selection. We had a manhattan that was among the best we have ever had. Cioppino was second only to Scoma's in San Francisco. The fish and chips were light, very tasteful and the best we have had since London.

Definitely a place I’m going back to again and again

By Barbara Miner |

This the place if you are an oyster lover! Dan and Louis Oyster Bar is the oldest family owned restaurant in Portland. Began in 1907 the restaurant has been serving oysters on the half shell as well as oysters, clams, salmon and other seafoods and non-seafoods menu items in the historic restaurant. I cannot begin to describe how absolutely the best fried oyster po-boy I had there. The bread that held the oysters was a delicacy itself. It was soft, fresh, and wonderful. The po-boy was a generous size and the oysters inside the bun that had a delicious dressing on the bread were fried to perfection. I am hungry for one again as I write this review. My daughter who was with me had the oysters on the half which were the small, bay oysters. I ate one of hers and I don’t think you could get oysters any fresher than these were.

Good fried food very distressed neighborhood

By David L |

The restaurant is located in a very distressed neighborhood with a lot of homeless just across the street from the restaurant. While we were not bothered the location is a big negative. There were 7 of us. One got a shrimp salad that was well prepared and presented. One got a large fried chicken sandwich and enjoyed it. Four got various various fried entrees with French fries that were quite good. I had fresh catch salmon blackened on rice and vegetables. The salmon was dry and had limited flavor. The rice was barely warm and starchy. The bar area and adjacent dining area wash noisy with crashing plates and silverware being gathered for cleaning. Service was good

fun and relaxing

By Teresa M |

we returned for lunch last sunday with family and sat in the bar area.....i had a estrella jalisco and my partner had a stella artois...family had spanish coffee, and a diet cola....next we shared both the samon and shrimp louie...the family had fish tacos, chowder, and oysters...the food/drinks were excellent.....the family hadn't been here before, so that was a treat....we love coming here....the staff is excellent and quick, friendly, and full of humor.....thx so much.....

Even the happy hour oysters are top notch!

By Tobin C |

I was looking for higher end oysters and resisted the happy hour special. The waitress said I would not be disappointed and she was right! Great selection of 12 WA oysters at a low price. I overheard her saying the owner insists all food is made in house too which is great. Bad neighborhood with homeless etc but a great spot nevertheless.

A Real Seafood Gem

By galcurious |

We came here our last night in Portland. It was a short walk from our hotel in the Pearl District. I agree with other reviewers that the neighborhood is not the best but Louis and Don's was worth the dose of reality we experienced and we never felt unsafe. The restaurant is well appointed and shows its family orientation. The maritime, seafood and family history is amazing and looking at photos and news articles and memorabilia really added to our growing knowledge of Portland's history. We were craving oysters and Dan & Louis did not disappoint. The oysters were fresh and excellent, served with tasty muniere and cocktail sauces and fresh horseradish. The draft IPA beer was perfect. We also had the Seafood Cioppino, the clam chowder, and the baby shrimp cocktail over lettuce, all of which were so fresh and tasty. Our server Holly was a pro, friendly, efficient and very welcoming. Please don't be put off by the neighborhood, the restaurant is a gem that you will definitely enjoy!

Where the locals go for oysters

By MyTravels033 |

FRESH oysters. We happened to walk in during happy hour. 5 varieties to chose from during our visit - 2 from Oregon, 3 from Washington. All were excellent!! We had 2 dozens. Also tried the garlic Parmesan fries - very good - and the fish tacos. Full bar. Beers in bottle/glass are cheap - coors light, bud, PBR, Guinness, Tecate. Microbrews available on tap - amber, stout, Pilsner, Pale ale, cider. Service was great. Very friendly. Good conversation. Wish we were locals. Would be here often.

Not even hungry...ate anyway!

By Victor C |

Just wondering around the Saturday Market on Sunday. Was looking for something to do. We ended up here! Great selection of food and drinks. A gorgeous day. Sat outside. Great, friendly, efficient table services. I'd go there more if I lived in that area. My suggestion: Mussels in beure-blanc sauce, and say "YES" to the hot crusty roll. I wanted another. Usually I'd've paired it with a Chardonnay...but I was feeling adventurous and ordered one of the Beer & Shot Pairings. LOL Perfect.

Fresh seafood

By charorosal |

We had the $27 sampler, 1/2 lb mussels and chowder. Food was so good. Highly recommend. A bit pricey but so fresh and very tasty. Love how this restaurant’s ownership must be a descendant. This corner restaurant on a Saturday was so fun too because there was great street music too. Yumm

What a fantastic pre- dinner

By bedbug1001 |

What a fantastic pre- dinner event we had! Four of us shared over 3 dozen oysters. The service was just terrific as were all the delicious oysters. They take great care of the oysters to keep them fresh until they’re served. Cant wait to do it again!

Great service and laid back

Great service and laid back atmosphere. Sandwiches were good value for money. $13 for fried fish and Cajun oyster sandwiches.

Great old school casual place

By PDXmilespoints |

One of the oldest if not oldest places in portland. casual but very good seafood. Family friendly. A lot of character!

beer and salmon louie, then protest march

By Teresa M |

we had lunch before the medicare for all protest/march...i had a heiineken, and my partner had a guiness...we each had the salmon louie salad and sat outside in the street closed down to vehicles, a big plus....the staff are real friendly..in fact one woman was hanging close by screaming, and the server said something nice to her, then she moved on..delicious beverages and salads...thx so much!

We'd go back in a heartbeat!

By Alan S |

This place has been there for over 100 years, and I can see why. Even my wife, who dislikes oysters, enjoyed the Oysters Rockefeller at the bar, where we waited a short while for a friend to arrive. Friendly staff, and once seated in the restaurant, the food was promptly served, hot and to perfection. FYI, while seafood is their speciality, they do have other types of items, which some in our party partook, and were not disappointed! If you are looking for a nice place to sit and enjoy, this is it!

Best Oysters !!!

By COZYMELMIKE |

The oysters here are fixed perfectly ! You get to watch them clean oysters. Hollis was helping us and we had great conversations with her. I believe she was leaving for other reasons but told us how she enjoyed working there.

The Oysters are fantastic.

By Sunkist_10 |

We ordered two types of baked oysters. Both were excellent. We both ordered their fresh fish of the day - salmon. If it weren’t for the oysters their review would have been lower. The salmon was served over rice, and the rice was cold. The vegetables were perfect, but the salmon was over cooked. The staff was very nice. And we mentioned the issues to them. Neither of us expected any sort of discount, we just wanted to give them a heads up. We would likely go back for oysters, but get dinner someplace else.

Mediocre food and service - Cop Hangout

By Dave J |

As a native Portlander of over 70 years, I’ve been to D&L many times… I’ve never been impressed. My favorite downtown seafood go-to has always been Jakes – much better variety, quality and service. D&L food is mediocre, and the service is often downright incompetent or even rude. But worst of all, D&L has always been a Portland Police hangout. The long-time downtown Portland Police station was just up the street at 2nd & Oak. And the association with D&L has even, in my view extended to outright corruption. One evening some years ago, I was rear-ended by an employee of D&L on her way home from work. We stopped and exchanged ID. License, contact, and Insurance information. A few days later I got a call from a Portland Policeman saying “I’m going to have to cite you for ‘Leaving the Scene of an Accident’.” “WHAT?? “ I said. “That’s ridiculous!!!” “Well,” he said.. “She has friends here…” So.. I was thus forced to hire a lawyer – which I couldn’t afford at the time. We had a ‘trial’ before just a Judge (because my lawyer knew the police citation was clearly nonsense). The D&L woman said her thing (that I’d backed into her…), I said my thing. Judge bangs the gavel: “Not Guilty.” The cop follow me out of the courtroom…”Hey, let me explain!...’ He knew it was unfair… I just kept walking. Recently, friends wanted to meet there… I sighed and agreed… it was no better than it

You gotta see this place

By spelkey56 |

You gotta visit just to see this vintage restaurant. Off of an alley street with other cool restaurants and the Kit Kat Club (not seedy at all). I had the Cajun Po Boy and it was good. Tons of fries but a little luke warm. We went for dinner but my wife noticed they had a smoked chowder for a lunch special and asked if they had any left. Luckily they did and she got it for the lunch special price. I tried it and it was very good. I have had better but believe me when I say this, it's probably just a preference thing cause I can tell most people would love this chowder. Overall a cool experience. I loved the waitress, didn't get her name but she was blonde, shortish hair, and gorgeous, friendly too.

Great gem!

By Sara S |

Several natives to Portland had suggested other seafood restaurants but after wandering around, we stumbled upon Dan and Louis Oyster Bar. It's coziness and seafaring theme made it an easy pick. It was an excellent place to unwind after a day of walking and exploring. The service was great and food was excellent. In fact, we ate there twice over our 3 days in Portland. Great happy hour deals too.

Great Seafood! Historic Charm

By lloyds0427 |

We ate here about 2 weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon after visiting the Portland Saturday Market which was great by itself. Had a cup of clam chowder which was very good, and my wife had a cup of lobster stew, that was more like a soup. Really good and full of meat. Then had the fish fry, that was also good, not overbreaded or soggy. Service was good, and were seated right away with no wait. Will be back!

Used to be our favorite place

By ourpeacefullhome |

We literally used to make Portland our destination (over 350 miles) on a weekend whim to get lunch or dinner here. This went on for about 8+ years. Since the last couple of years, the quality has steadily declined. We have kept going back, hoping things will improve. Nope. They used to have their own source of oysters, I think that has changed. The original oysters were the best ever; better than Ankennys. Also we think that maybe the old school owners have passed the reins to younger members of the family. The dedication to the excellent food just is not there anymore. The overall feeling is that they just don't care. BUT the amazing ambiance is the same and very fun to walk around and look at souvenirs. They did take out some tables for a small music area...not a great idea because people don't come here for music but for the expectations of their oyster dishes. Unfortunately, we don't have this as a destination place because of the poor quality now, and we really miss it.

Hunger is a Good Place to Start in Portland OR

By Harvey B |

On a cool, fall day, late in the afternoon, wandering through the heart of the historical section of Portland, hunger can strike. It did, with a vengeance. Suddenly, there appeared a land-locked ship called Dan & Louis’ Oyster Bar. I took the hint and went aboard. The Oyster Bar has been part of Portland for many years, pre-dating Dan or even Louis, I am sure. It seems to have expanded many times, taking over houses next door and every which way. The walls are covered with Portland’s history. The busy bar never stops dispensing drinks, and the seafood keeps coming. I had the oyster Po’ Boy. I should not have. Hungry as I was, it was too filling. But it was very good. The guilt is mine; the triumph belongs to the Oyster Bar.

The place for fresh oysters

By Don H |

A very unique little restaurant/bar. Established in 1901 and still run by the original Wachsmuth family. I sat in the bar this trip and enjoyed service by Michelle, wife of the owner. She filled me in on a little history of the establishment as well as providing excellent service. I happened in on a Monday when it was half price fresh oysters all day (Tuesday as well). They were fresh and delicious as was the Cajun Fried Oyster Po'Boy I selected. I overheard another customer rave about the Crab Chowder, another house specialty. I will definitely try the chowder on my next visit and perhaps sit in the unique maritime themed dining room.

Good oysters

By antgat15 |

So we walked in and waited a bit before the bartender was done with her phone conversation in another room (the kid shucking clams apologized) so after she started pouring beer from the taps that just continued to pour foam, I began tasting a beer that just a little bit cooler then room temp. The only reason I'm giving this spot a 3 is because of the friendly staff, the good oysters, and a cool vibe and the tables out front was a plus

Meh...

By My Suitcase Journeys |

Was walking around town and decided to give this place a try. Had a dozen oysters and I really only enjoyed 2-3 of them (I think one was the Sea Nymph). I also ordered a cocktail and I hated it. Overall food and drinks were kinda hit and miss. Service wasn't that great either. The outdoor patio was fantastic however. Great for soaking up the afternoon sun and people watching. If only they had better food.

Service could not have been worse!

By Ken S |

Spotting some well-located outdoor seating for people-watching and enjoying the pleasant outdoor environment (with the Saturday Market a block away) , we grabbed a table and let the hostess inside know we were there (In fact, she told us to "just take any open table.") And then we waited, and waited, and waited (and waited). We were not in a hurry and wanted to experience this famous Portland eatery. Water took forever to receive, our bar order same, food same, getting the check. It was so bad. Fortunately, my wife and I were visiting from AZ, so enjoyed the conversation with her sister, and the nice coolish breeze outside. When the food finally arrived, it was just ok, with the exception of the burger, which my wife said was great (and was loaded and looked juicy and tasty). The fish tacos my sister-in-law and I got were disappointing. One short, narrow, deep fried piece on each taco. Not recommended. And lastly, when we inquired about the delay in our food, the waiter looked at us incredulously like, "Huh, what's your problem?" Don't know what the problem was on this Saturday, but extremely surprising (and disappointing for this Portland landmark.) It pains me to berate such a potentially nice place, and as one who loves to eat, but The Oyster Bar earned their place in the Hall of Shame.

Amazing time

Excellent Historic, Local Family-Owned Oyster Bar

By SuzXeric |

A fun little place with old-time ambiance and decor mixed with a touch of modern class, Dan and Louis is a must if you like oysters or steamers. Even the salad I ordered was outstanding, with fresh, crisp veggies and a house-made vinaigrette. Their extensive selection of draft beers complemented the food nicely. The Happy Hour menu of food and drink is comprehensive and delicious, while being a great value. However, I would recommend a visit to Dan and Louis anytime. If a drink is what interests you, the bar is well-stocked and includes the easygoing, social chatter of local patrons. The service was down-to-earth, friendly, and welcoming. The music (upon my arrival, a Dinah Washington recording as part of a selection of well-chosen jazz standard performances) was absolutely enjoyable and added to the ambiance. Whatever Dan and Louis Oyster Bar is doing, they're doing it right. I hope they continue in this location for a long time to come.

Wow, delicious oysters. Variety.

By Tony J B |

This is the place to slurp fresh shucked oysters. Alex shucked then in front of me and they were delicate and delicious. I had the Stretch Island and the Totten Inlet variety. Happy hour - dozen for $24. I will be back when in PDX. Helpful, let me know and enjoy Dan and Louis Oyster Bar.

Service and Oysters both top notch!

By Gena C |

We stopped in shortly before they closed. We sat at the bar for a drink and oysters. The service was fantastic, and the oysters were delicious. We tried a sampling at first and then picked our favorites for a second dozen. Loved hearing about the history of the bar, and the 5 generations of owners. highly recommend!

Hole in the wall - best thing to stumble into!

By HoneyLea |

My husband and I stumbled into this place looking for a bite to eat. We grabbed a seat at the oyster bar and had a great chat with the oyster-tender. This place has a lot of history on it's walls and it's been family-owned for generations. We had a great time closing the place down and ate tons of delicious oysters. I would like to note that the wait was pretty slow, but for the atmosphere we were looking for, it worked well. I wouldn't visit this place if you're in a hurry. Take your time, check out all the artifacts on the walls, and have a nice chat with the local who works there. Overall, 10/10!

Landmark restaurant worth a visit!

By Linda C |

Not being a seafood person, I wasn't really excited about eating at this restaurant, but several people recommended it, so we tried it. The fish (as in fish and chips) was very mild, lightly breaded, and quite good. Cole slaw and fries were also very good. The wait staff were helpful and friendly. It is located in an interesting building with lots of history. We were glad we ate here!

Great Historic Spot with Delicious Food

By Nicole S |

We stopped at Oyster Bar for a drink and a quick snack and ended up staying for a while. The oysters were so good we ordered a second round. The waitress recommended the Smoked Salmon Chowder and I haven't stopped thinking about it since we left. There was a good beer selection and great people watching for outside diners. We will be back for a full meal soon!

excellent

By Teresa M |

we returned to dan/louis oyster bar for lunch yesterday, as we wanted to see the decor downtown, and visit portland luggage to buy something....we sat in the bar area, and ordered an estrella jalisco lager, and a decaf spanish coffee......next we shared a salmon chowder and each had a salmon louie....the staff/bartender is the best!...she was in festive garb and her charm and humor helped with how busy it was at lunch.....she put on a fine demonstration of the fire with the spanish coffee......we love going here for the vintage building and excellent drink/food....the oyster shucker was very busy too....thx so much!

Return visit did not disappoint

By Mikpar |

This was a return visit after many years on our anniversary. For the record, we also had a Restaurants.com voucher. We started with clam chowder and also salmon chowder and had several pints of different microbrews with the dinner. For dinner, we had "Choose 3" and smoked salmon fish and chips. All excellent. The voucher helped lower the bill by a third. Definitely will return again!

8 of us went last night .

By Jeffrey M |

8 of us went last night . The place is a solid seafood restaurant. Nothing complicated but good,. The place has a great deal of charm . But what stood out was the service, Our server was exceptional. She was engaging and fun, and to top it off she bakes the pies . The Marion berry pie was outstanding . It’s worth going just for that

Shucked on site

By Brandy C |

We were looking for a quiet place after a loud day at work. It was a Monday early evening so might not always be this quiet especially since it’s next door to the Saturday market (which is both Saturday and Sunday by the way). Wonderful spot by the river. Many seafood options. Service was exceptional and the oysters were shucked on site! Oyster shucker was knowledgeable, helpful and charming. They offer varieties of oysters and make recommendations. Definitely worth a visit.

Do NOT miss this place.

By Brian F |

Walked around and were looking for a place to enjoy a glass of Red. Then we came across this Bar, and we went in. Seated by the bar, and it was very relaxed with silent Blues coming out of the speakers. The Barman was very nice to talk with. Then we saw the light and discovered that this in fact an oyster bar. The Mussels and PO Boy Sandwich was Great. So was the Ambiance and Service. Good job Dan & Louis.

Fish tacos and oysters Rockefeller...

By OhWowMan |

Stopped in late one night for a bite to eat. We only sampled the fish tacos and oysters Rockefeller. Nice spot. Good food. Friendly service. Did you know Sebastian Cabot ate here? So did Jonathan WInters! Lots of stuff on the walls. Fun to explore

Trust the fat man!!!!

By DAVID S |

This place is unpretentious down to earth and a fantastic place to go for Washington’s local oysters, fried or on the half shell. Downtown location so a couple of bucks to park, but well worth making it a destination for seafood. Try the chopino it’s awesome.

So good we went there two days in a row

By John N |

We happened across this restaurant by accident. We had been walking and sight seeing the city for most of the day and were hungry and thirsty. We sat outside so we could people watch. If it feels a little sketchy don't worry about it. We thought the same thing at first but it was just fine. Our waitress the first night was very polite and helpful. The drinks came right out. We ordered a couple items off the appraiser menu. They came out pretty quickly. The next day we were around the same area and wanted to go back because of our experience the night before. This time our waitress was the owner's wife and her daughter. They suggested the fish tacos and the clam chowder. While sipping on our screwdrivers our food came out and it was very delicious. It just may have been the best clam chowder I have ever had. The service was outstanding. I would recommend going there and for sure order the clam chowder.

Oyster layover

By Fred S |

Fantastic flight layover. Good food and good service in old town portland. Drinks are strong and good.

Worth a visit

By Vickie B |

Loads of history here from the creaky floors to the old photos from days gone by. Chowder was good. Nothing fancy at all but that's part of the charm.

Fun, friendly, and I hear the oysters are excellent.

By Molly P |

My husband wanted to stop to get some oysters. He tried all four that were on the menu (some several times) and loved them all. Big John was our server. I asked him about the hole in the floor (you'll have to see it and ask about it yourself!) and he gave us a mini-tour of the place and a short history lesson. Fun, historic place!

Amazing Oysters!!!

By B. Darst |

We came here in Late February right before all the Covid lockdowns. So this was pre-Covid so not sure about their Covid protocols. But I can tell you the Oyetsrers were amazing. The service was great. I lived in Portland for 18 years but did not come to this local institution until after I moved. It is like having dinner in a little piece of history. So if you like oysters you will love this place

Poor service, no hospitality.

By Sheena G |

I wish I could comment on the food but I cannot. This place came highly recommended to us by a friend of the owner. He spoke so highly that we went out of our way to check it out. The bar area was crowded but we were told by an employee not sure if he was a server or other support staff to snag a small table by the door. We sat down perused the menu and proceeded to wait over 5 minutes for someone to come say hello, ask about drinks or a food order. The 5 minute mark came and went, there were several employees that walked by us but not one acknowledged us. I am in the serving industry and understand it can be busy but there is no excuse for us being seated for over 5 minutes without even a simple "hello, someone will be right with you" I would have accepted some sort of direction like "if you want to order please see the bartender" but not one person even made eye contact with us. So the food may be spectacular and life changing but there service is not. It's a shame because this place looks super cool and old school Portland.

Nostalgia Keeping this place alive

By Susan S |

If you’re expecting anything besides nostalgia or excellent oysters on the half shell, you’ll be disappointed. Mediocre service and it took more than an hour to get our food at 1:15 pm. Bathroom was disgusting and even one of the servers felt sorry for us having to use the women’s room and gave us the key to the handicapped accessible bathroom.

Nice find nearby our hotel

By Naomi N |

My husband found this oyster bar behind Voodoo Donut. We went there for post marathon lunch and toast. Family run old bar with cozy corners. Do not expect high end oyster bar but they had good oyster plate and Po Boy Sandwich was great even for me who usually not eat fried oysters.

Every time we visit Portland a must

By Ken S |

We recommend eating at the bar great service and recommendations and entertains. We got the combo oysters calamari clams and even shrimp

Delicious Food Great People

By Jill V |

we had dinner at Don & Louis Oyster Bar where Holly the bartender not only mixes great drinks but makes all the customers feel like they are old friends. Their smoked Salmon Fry was delicious, I am not usually a fried food fan but this was by far the exception, this was not the typical fried fish where there is more batter then fish, the salmon was moist and flavorful. I also tried the raw oysters they were fresh and were delicious on their own.

Tourist spot, but worth a visit

By Margaret G |

This old restaurant very near Voodoo Donuts does indeed serve fresh oysters prepared various ways. Try to go Monday or Tuesday when they lower the oysters prices. We got 6 raw, and both the baked oysters Rockefeller and Parmesan (which my husband liked the best). The special chowder was also delicious. That’s considerable food right there, so we split the special salmon fish and chips entree, which was delicious. Our waitress also offered a couple generous wines tastes before we settled on our bottle, and then graciously suggested we head to Pine Street Market for dessert, since the only ice cream the restaurant had was vanilla. We had a very good meal here for not too much money.

Great Seafood!

By PollyannaDreamgirl |

Our hotel recommended this place, which was in walking distance from our Embassy Suites hotel. VERY good seafood appetizers, which filled us up sufficiently for dinner. Would highly recommend it!

Good oysters and clam chowder

By elizabeth Kelsey |

I’m a huge fan of oysters- particularly on the half shell/ so really enjoyed having a dozen at Dan & Louis’. I also got an order of the clam chowder which was nice and thick/hot. My brother got the smoked salmon fish & chips and that seemed to be the winning dish of the evening; I should have ordered that instead of the fried oyster sandwich which was Ok but not great.

Good oysters in Portland

By HikerBob66 |

We were looking for oysters, so based on reviews, we walked up to Ankeny St to try Dan and Louis, and they were great. We sat at the bar for a late Sunday lunch and had a dozen assorted on the half shell. They identified all the sources, as a good oyster bar should. The beer assortment on tap was fine, and a crisp salad was just right. The location was a bit strange to us suburbanites since the street was more of an alley at that point, but the inside was fine.

Fantastic

By dragonflyfrisbee |

Fantastic food, amazing staff and one of a kind dining experience. We were waited in by the owners son Kai he was amazing and we didn’t know till after who he was. Very humble loves his job. Food was fantastic fresh lovely oysters 🦪, great shrimp po boy and friend had the fried clams and shrimp with fries

Great oyster spot

By greentan |

This place has a good variety of oysters from the region, cozy atmosphere, welcoming service and good variety of wines and beer. They are located near old town, lots of tourists around, pricing is slightly high, you could find same or similar variety elsewhere for lower pricing if it wasn't for the location. Overall it was a very good experience as this place seems to be an "oyster landmark", presentation was very nice and oysters were fresh.

OYSTERS FRESH OUT THE RIVER GORGE!

By Rio T |

Great selection of Oysters you can see them from the window on display and plenty of seating for big parties, its in the old side of Portland which is walking distance to the Colombia River and just a great place to enjoy some fresh sea food surrounded by other great places to eat!

Dan and Louie Oysters

By DWTSteve |

Dan and Louis never disappoints…oysters on the half…Rockefeller…chowders…all of it in a great location to people watch! Thank you Ashley and to all those who make D&L our favorite place in Portland!

Charming

By Alison M |

Great osters and delicious martinis. Service was great, staff was very friendly and efficient. Reasonably priced for the quality and they had a great kids menu. They also give crayons for the kids to color while you enjoy a drink! Decor is charming.

Great place to share oysters

By Jeanie B |

I like the verity of oyster choices Dan and Louis Oyster Bar has to offer. It is a Portland icon and has a fun décor. Stop by for a plate to share with a friend. Or better yet take a group and have a tasting. Fun place to go if your into nostalgia.

Fried Oysters were delicious

By Manish N |

Rolled in at 9:30 and grabbed a plate of fried oysters (good portion) and a reasonably priced beer. Service was quick, food was tasty, other customers were fun, located in an active area, zero complaints!

Glad we came in!

By BVM |

Just got into town from a long drive. Hubby wanted oysters. We found the restaurant OK but unsure where to go in to be seated. It was early and couldn't find fiqure out who to ask for help. The person working the bar took us over to the area where you can watch them cook or sit at a table. We decided to sit near the area they cook. Once we sat down everyone was friendly and helpful. Cocktails were great. We enjoyed their Ceasar Salad and Clam Chowder. I had the fish tacos that were delicious and hubby really enjoyed the oysters.

Friendly staff with Fresh Seafood and great Bloody Marys

By CJSPENO |

Recently on a layover at PDX I decided to take the train into the city proper. After walking around seeing the Weirdness I stopped into Dan & Louis Oyster Bar. I parked myself at the bar and was takin care of by Avery. Avery took care of my thirst and answered all my tourist questions with ease. He recommended the seafood to eat and I loved the Fresh steamed clams. I also had the pleasure of talking to Michele and told her about my interesting train experience. This was a great spot to people watch and enjoy the “Saturday Market” sites.

A Gem in Downtown PDX

By Erinf83 |

My friends and I used to go here before watching bands downtown in highschool and I just went back today for lunch. The staff were very accommodating and the restaurant is so charming and welcoming. I ordered the Caesar salad with salmon and this might be one of my favorite Caesar salads I’ve had in Portland. I would love to go back and spend some more time and order some more things off the menu. My friend also loved her food. It’s one of the oldest restaurants in Portland and I loved all the pictures and relics of old PDX. We had a lovely, attentive server as well. I will be trying to frequent this place more and try everything on the menu. Bonus: super reasonable prices that kinda shocked my friend and I. If you can’t make it to the coast just go here!

Oysters and more!

By shewholovestoeat |

This is a gem of a place. Has an adorable bar in the front of the restaurant. They have some of the best seafood stews around. We came in for happy hour and a crab louie. Sat in the bar and had a great time. Holly was our server. She was wonderful. Good service and fun sense of humor. My hubby got the crab louie. Plenty of crab and really tasty 1000 island dressing. One of the first things to arrive at the table is a fresh, hot sourdough roll with butter. So good-- We also tried the clam chowder-lots of clams and nice and thick. Then a shrimp cocktail, good sauce. Last the fish tacos. Fish was fried, with cabbage and a nice sauce on these too. Lots of variety, prices are good and the staff is fun! This place has been around forever--go and enjoy--they are expanding the space and will have a lovely new room in the front soon.

Sea food

3 stars only because of food quality Service is a 2 stars Great location and atmosphere Old school except service Had to wait over 30 min to get order for 4 people Asked for bread and butter never got it even though was supposed to be part of the menu when ordering oysters Fresh oysters good but different sizes , the menu didn't mention different sorts. Good see food , fresh.

Still Great!

By Paul W |

I may be a bit biased, I've been dining here for over 55 years! In recent years I stop by the bar area when I'm in Portland for Oyster Happy Hour! Who can resist fresh $2 oysters on the half shell? Holly the bartender is a hoot and makes a killer Sazerac cocktail to go with the oysters. Although there are a ton of more trendy places nearby, this one is the real deal.

Portland getaway.

By Kristine from Coeurdalene |

Portland is full of great places to eat. I wanted sea food, not super fancy, decent price point, and atmosphere. This place checked all the boxes. I love old buildings with history. A restaurant that started in 1907 will have that. It was casual, with such interesting decor, very service. Our waitress, who may be an owner took great care of us in a casual not stuffy way. The oysters on the half shell were amazing and so fresh. The chowders we tried were delicious. The surprise was the oyster fry. We decided to give it a try thinking it would just be a deep fried thickly battered item. It was amazing. Just a hint of a light fresh batter, that didn’t overwhelm the oyster. I will go back and I have been telling everyone about this awesome family run business, chock full of history, serving delicious seafood.

Tourist Trap

This place is in a terrible part of town, Dirty, Homeless everywhere and very high prices. If you want to be mugged this is the place to be at night. Disgusting.

Fresh and delicious seafood

Be sure to look at the access to the tunnels

By Red_Flag_V |

Never pass up a great Oyster Bar! Dan & Louis is a great one. We had the dozen Sampler platter and almost ordered another but opted for the crab stew (100 year old family recipe used) and fabulous clam chowder instead. Great service and friendly atmosphere will keep us coming back!

Good Place to eat

Large friendly place to eat. Good selection of oysters. Convenient location near down town. Prices were reasonable.

Not worth the wait

By Carla M |

As an oyster lover I have tried just about every oyster bar I can find in each city that I visit. Given that this is the specialty of the house I was disappointed with the half dozen on the half shell (the 45 minutes it took for my order to arrive was not worth the wait) but I did enjoy the oyster stew, a milky broth with fat boiled oysters. Service was very slow despite it being after 3pm and only a third of the tables were occupied with plenty of staff buzzing about. Very disappointed as this location is in the heart of the touristy block but seems to have lost it's historical charm.

Family run for 5 generations

By timiniowa |

The crew here have seen everything and they have their stuff together. The seafood gumbo was amazing and of a portion size that can satisfy even the Kraken. The ciopino (sp?) came chocked full of seafood delights. Our server, bartender and 76 year old family matron told us stories about the building and the history of the place. Highly recommended unless you prefer places like Applebee’s, Olive Garden and Red Lobster - in which case you won’t “get” Dan and Louis

freshest oysters EVER

By Drseapitz |

I dropped by here walking around the city between meetings. It was happy hour so I decided to go for the oysters. Wow. Lovely selection of PNW oysters, and so fresh! Great prices at happy hour. The fish tacos and the spicy bloody Mary were also lovely. As a San Diegan, I have high expectations for fish tacos, and these met them - fresh, hot, lightly breaded fish, in a tortilla with nice toppings. Two for $5 wasn't bad and there was a slight PNW twist - the salsa had cucumbers. The oysters were served with horseradish, cocktail sauce and vinegar, so all tastes catered for. The service was prompt and cheerful. The setting isn't fancy - it's a bar and some outside tables, but these oysters were memorable. I'll be back.

For oyster lovers (and their mates)...It's the real thing

By AZGrotta |

Not sure why we waited two months to try out this piece of Portland history - but it even half as long before we're back again. FIRST: When was the last time you were in a restaurant owned and operated by the same family for more than 100 years? This place is an institution. SECOND: for oyster lovers, you won't find them fresher or with more variety any where in Portland. The family owns its own oyster beds. THIRD: For those who don't eat them raw, there's an incredible seafood saute, with a choice of prawns, cod, oysters or calimari, or any combination thereof. Order with a specially baked sourdough roll and you'll be in heaven.

AN ICONIC SPOT IN DOWNTOWN PORTLAND

By Robb G |

On the recommendation of a friend, and loving oysters, I stopped in for dinner at Dan and Louis Oyster Bar and am glad I did. The restaurant is over 100 years in service, I think it began in 1907. I started out with 3 of the Baked Oysters Parmesan and then 6 fresh half shell oysters and they were very good. Still being hungry, I decided to try the fried selection of prawns and calamari. This was excellent as the batter was very light and crispy. When in Portland and wanting some good seafood in a casual atmosphere, make certain you visit. I know I will when I come back to Portland.

We 3 gals liked the cozy look of Dan & Louis Oyster Bar located in an old section of downtown Portland. We were greeted warmly by our server as soon as we walked in. I noticed that the people at other tables, plus the people at the oyster bar were enjoying their food. The menu was varied with lots of fresh fish entrees, salads and sandwiches. While we waited for our food, the server provided us with fresh, hot bread and butter, and beverages. She conversed lightly with us and I detected a warmth and friendliness that made us feel relaxed. The fish was delicious! I had fish and chips. The coating was delectably light and the cod was fresh and cooked perfectly. Another gal had salmon and she said it was delicious. And the 3rd gal had the clam chowder, a thick, well-prepared soup with plenty of clams and seasoned perfectly. The bill was moderate priced and the food quality was excellent. I am sure I will return to Dan & Louis Oyster Bar the next time I return to Portland.

Oyster Heaven!

By AlfredEileen |

Any trip to Portland means a trip to Dan & Louis’ Oyster Bar! Of course, we started with six oysters on the half shell from Eld Inlet, Pickering Pass, and Stretch Island, Washington. Succulent globs of oceanic goodness! Next up was a bowl of oyster stew and another of clam chowder: hot, creamy, and chock full of the appropriate bivalve. Thanks to the folks at Dan & Louis’ for a great meal!

Fantastic

We had heard that Dan and Louis was a Portland institution so half expected to be disappointed but it was so good that we returned the next night. The oysters were second to none and the mussels, clam chowder and fish tacos likewise. The atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming and fun. Thoroughly recommended.

In the mood for oysters

By ButchSC76 |

I flew in to Portland and was driving up to Salem for meetings the following day. I was hungry, and loving the food in Portland went downtown on my way to Salem. That’s where I stumbled upon the Oyster Bar. Staying true to the name I had a bowl of oyster stew, and 6 oysters. Stew was the closest to my deceased mother’s stew I have found! Other oysters were perfect sized for my taste and were excellent as well!

Been coming here for seafood since I was a kid!

Visiting Portland and had to stop ad Dan and Louis Oyster Bar. We got there late, close to closing, but staff was still very accommodating. Had lots of delicious fresh raw oysters and the crab stew..both amazing as always!!! Will always try to stop here when in Portland.

It was ok.....not a repeater

Ordered a dozen oysters...hate it when the nectar is left on the counter after being shucked. Leaves them dry. No oyster menu or description. Clam chowder was ok. Oyster stew was very tasty. Fried oysters were fine. Server was covering too many tables. Nice old, rustic atmosphere. Oysters were a disappointment and better options around for sure.

A neat place right near the activity of Voodoo Donuts ...

My son had been here a couple of years ago and found his love of oysters at this restaurant and said 'you have to go here'; so we did. My other half loves oysters (previously east coast oysters) and tried several kinds which he really liked. I had fish and chips which I also liked quite well.

Yummy and great location!

Had an excellent meal at this restaurant - the oldest family owned restaurant in Portland. Loved reading about the history, but loved the crab stew even more! Can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu. I'll be making this a regular stop whenever visiting Portland.

Solid

A reliable place, albeit a little tired on the interior (true to the working class roots). Still, excellent seafood, friendly staff. An easy and relatively inexpensive spot for a bite...

Good po boy

By PenguinScott |

A friend recommended the place and it sounded like a hit. The first time I tried was July 4th. Full house all around, streets full of people. Place was closed. I was back in town a few weeks later and tried it with a friend. We sat outside to enjoy the nice weather. We got to enjoy the weather a long time. It took over half an hour for us to get our sandwiches. She had the chicken, I had they oyster po boy. It was very good and decent fries. Got to share a table (crowded place) with a nice couple. I'd consider going back, but it's not all that high on my list of priorities. Po boy was $12.

Come for the Location and Decor - Not Necessarily the Food

By Parrot434 |

Our Portland friends who brought us here confirmed that Dan and Louis is a local institution that is often jammed. The décor is wonderfully rustic with a nautical feel and conversation pieces. Outdoor seating along a shared pedestrian pathway makes for a great experience eating and people watching (including the homeless) on a nice day . It's also a few yards away from the famous Voodoo Donuts (with a long line to get in). As for the food, it's average. Nothing special. So many better Portland seafood establishments. Fried and greasy in some cases but in all fairness, we didn't have the famous oysters everyone talks about. You can do better elsewhere if food quality and service is your top priority. But if your looking for an overall experience, it's worth a stop to judge for yourself. You might agree more with the locals.

Cool atmosphere

Really BAD crab Louie!

By Beth F |

Yuck... Touted The best crab Louie in town??? I'd say NOT true! A lot of shredded lettuce with hard boiled eggs that were not hard boiled and a couple pieces of tomato & olives and a tablespoon of crab! Not to mention the 1000 island was kind of odd. Server was nice - but $20.00 was too much for really mediocre food. Heck @ The Chart House you get a fabulous view and an amazing crab Louie for $17.00! Just sayin'

Killer oyster bar & seafood

By Stephen K |

If you like oysters stop in here. Its been around since 1907 owned by the same family, in other words its an institution. Stopped in for oysters, 6 kinds tried all of them. Had a 7th calked sea monster, see pic, bigger than my hand. Sautéed shrimp was killer too. If you like oysters & seafood go here.

Something for everyong

By Anne W |

On my last night in Portland, 12 friends treated me to dinner at this restaurant. The teenagers were able to get burgers, while I was treated to fabulous oysters and the best mussels I have ever had. The decor is fun to look at and the location, on a street without cars, was like Brussels.

Fantastic food & atmosphere!

Such delicious food in a beautiful, historical building. And a great location- we stopped in during the Saturday Market.

First time visitor

Really great restaurant. Excellent relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff. Tasty food. So rare to find a place like this. The restaurant scene seems dominated by big boring chains. It is refreshing to find a place with character in the heart of the city. Try to visit at happy hour.

Perfect small Washington oysters

By Jankees Rovers |

Unique place. Fresh small ousters from the waters in Washington. Oysters are small but so tasty. We love your oysters much better than the European ones. And we are real oysters addicts. Super friendly waitress who gave us more restaurant and foodies tips
