I don't like to give negative reviews, but a return trip to the Delta Cafe was such a dissapointment that I am going to have to share this review with prospective customers. My wife and I with much anticipation for some great Cajun cooking went to The Delta for dinner. When the best food were the sides, it is a hint that something is terribly wrong. Started with an appetizer of deep-fried okre, which was nicely prepared. It is an uncommon treat that is worth the experience of a relatively exotic vegetable. So far, so good. My wife ordered the cat fish and I ordered the jambolya. The cat fish was the tail end cut, which tends to have a lot of cartelage, The jambolya had been cooked to a rice gruel with large piecs of chicken breast blended in, resulting in long fiberous strips of chicken through out. The sausage was passable, but the shrimp was nearly nonexistant. Their famous macaroni and cheese, ordered as a side was room temperature, as was the sweet potato fries. The redeeming quality was the red beans and rice with ham--Very, very tasty and served hot. Maybe its the hard times or a change of cooks, but quality ingredients prepared with love and served up hot seem to be a thing of the past. I am still contemplating whether they will deserved one last try.

Reviewed for brunch, and it is a worthy place to go for sure. Their dishes are competent combinations and well prepared as well.

Where else can you get an ice bucket with a 40oz? I love their food, it is a must eat here for most of our Portland trips!

The price is unbelievable for the amount and great food you get. Plus, 2 bucks for a beer. GO, GO, GO.

We dined at Delta Cafe because my husband was in the mood for chicken fried steak and we had heard that Delta Cafe was the place to go. Our server was very friendly and prompt. We ordered the chicken fried steak with potato-cheese casserole and biscuits and gravy. I had the beef brisket po'boy with tater-tot casserole. Since my husband is a connoisseur of chicken fried steak, this was a real test. It came with chicken gravy, which at first was a turn off. But, he was surprised by the herby-deliciousness of the gravy and was sold. He thought the sides were very good as well, but enjoyed the CFS the most. My po'boy was very good, I ordered it "dressed" with coleslaw and spicy BBQ sauce. I could only eat half the sandwich and half the tater-tot casserole since the portions were very large. The sandwich was very good, the casserole was a bit bland, could have use some herbs and bacon or ham in my opinion. Overall we had a very good experience. We sat outside on the sidewalk and people watched on a beautiful summer evening. Needless to say, we went home happy.

Since my daughters move at the end of the year in 2011 every visit we have had the weekend brunch at Delta Cafe. I feel now my visit would not be complete without it! Fun, casual, funky, delicious. They had me at the cheese grits!

Southern? Comfort Food? Cajun? That and then some. The vegetarian greens were a delight with just the right amount of bite. Hubby had the fried catfish and it rivaled that of our favorite place in Tomball, TX where down home cooking rules. Service was excellent but that could have been due to being with our family who are locals and are regulars. Being from Texas, it was a happy surprise that the food was so good yet they were able to cut out some of the calories without cutting out any of the flavor. Cornbread was wonderful and huge but probably not low cal. We came for dinner but we will be back to try breakfast on our next visit.

Tucked into Woodstock between Safeway and a tattoo shop, this neighborhood hipster hangout keeps the neighborhood cool.

Amazing dive atmosphere with wonderful southern cuisine. Try their Po' Boys and meatloaf. They've got vegetarian and vegan stuff too. But the best part is they have 40's of PBR.

The first and last time i would eat here. The restaurant was filthy and the food greasy and mediocre.

Seems to have slowed down a bit. Good for cheap food (bring cash or check) but not worth the drive if you're not in the neighborhood.

You will enjoy the atmosphere in this typically "Keep Portland Weird" sort of way. Service is great and so are the drinks. Try the Lynchburg lemonade for starters. Their Texas toast is all sorts of yum. I visit as often as I can.

I've only ever had nothing but love for this place. I have been going for years and that right there tells you it is very good to me. My favorite is Brunch. Beignets w/lemon curd,, Brioche french toast, chicken apple sausage, fried chicken and waffles, Last but not least this place is so awesome that I have asked for catfish for brunch and its only on the dinner menu and they have said yes and served me a plate of awesomeness. Stumptown coffee and $1 red beers make this place a winner to me. Give it a try.You will like it's funky little atmosphere and great food and staff. One last thing there is usually a small wait on Sun. its worth is that means people like the food!

Great choices for Happy Hour. Huge Bloody Mary. Drink specials every day. Cute patio in the back. Novelty decor.

Our breakfast was great and their service was good. It is a nice restaurant in a cute neighborhood. Their prices were a little high though.

The place is dark and the food brings all the light you will need. if you have a small appetite beware. You will finish your plate and wonder how it all fit. I had grandma's chicken and sorry to say grandma, it kicked your butt. what else more do I need to say. The desserts are awesome too. I had the Key lime pie, but I was informed that these are outsourced by a local bakery. The bar looked a little rough but we were not there to drink.

I started going there about 2 years ago, in the beginning the food was average and inconsistent. Recently I went again and the food has improved a lot. The chicken and waffle tasted great, chicken has crispy tasty skin and very moist inside, waffle also very good. The fried catfish and macaroni cheese were good also. Salad with pecan dressing were fresh. I also had been to breakfast recently and what I had was great. Happy to see this restaurant with better food. The only negative is the place is old and run-down. I wish they would remodel it a bit with a new coat of paint and some new furnishings.

Went here a while back since I live in th neighborhood. I will not be going back. I got the open-faced pulled pork sandwich and it tasted "dirty" and fishy. To me, that is an indicator that it's old and/or was cooked with the cat fish. The restaurant itself is way too dark and the seats are awkward. Just not my thing, and mediocre food. Mac and cheese casserole was good, though.

It's in our neighborhood and we like to patronize our local businesses so we have been here several times. The portions are quite large so we usually end up sharing a dinner of meatloaf, mac and cheese and really great cornbread. Nothing fancy. Just good Southern dishes!

When at the Delta you need to try the Pubs in a Pond. Hush puppy's smothered in gravy. Its basically a meal in its self. They are huge and the gravy is full of flavor. Wash them down with mojitos......just sayin. Enjoy!!

Having just arrived in town, we wanted to try a place that wasn't a chain, or just burgers, or boring. This fit what we wanted: a place that wasn't too hipster/trendy and has a local feel (although not necessary local cuisine). The décor was kitschy keeping with the southern (Cajun more so) theme but not too overboard. Children are allowed and their kids menu is pretty good for only $5 (or $7 for the ribs). Our younger son had the kids sampler and selected mac n' cheese for both sides. He did have to add some salt. The main dishes come with at least one delta side and it was hard to choose which one! My fried oyster Po' Boy with dressing (slaw and remoulade) was delicious and filling! My husband and older son had the chicken fried steak which was a good sized portion. Our server was pretty nice and laid back. We would probably try this place again when visiting Portland. I love southern comfort food and there's plenty mote on the menu that I want to try like chicken and waffles, fried chicken, etc.

I ordered the Delta breakfast with sausage and french toast and my husband had the smoked brisket hash. We received our order very quickly, but there wasn't a ton of people in there. My husband's brisket was so juicy and delicious. And the potatoes, oh the potatoes, were magic. They are covered with this cajun spice and tasty AF. I did find my french toast just a wee bit dry and because of the Andouille sausage in the brisket hash it was a little greasy, still delicious though. Portions are huge and I stuffed myself with every last potato I could before getting sick. I was overstuffed in the best, most satisfying way.

Don't go here wanting to watch your calories but do go here to have a great time out with friends and enjoy some delicious and down right wacky food. I love the drinks in the Bell jars and the amazingly eccentric atmosphere.

We realy enjoy the Delta. When the grills are smokin outside you can smell bbq 4 a block before you get there. The drinks are good and the foods great havent missed yet. The only bummer is they dont serve Jalapeno jelly with the hush puppys. Other wise nise place for a quiet lunch or dinner ENLOY

Delta Cafe is one of our favorite brunch places in Portland. We order The Delta, for example, which comes with 2 eggs, veggie sausage, toast, potatoes or grits and french toast or pancakes. Yes, it is a lot of food! The cafe itself is artsy, hip and funky, very relaxed with a metaphysical vibe. Truly unique in a good way. The servers are great!

I'm not sure what all the fuzz is about. This place was not impressive at all. Food was ok. Service was terrible and the place looks really dirty. Won't be returning.

I've eaten at the Delta Cafe off an on since it opened. I used to live in that area. I hadn't been back, not sure why, for a number of years and recently took the crew there for dinner and then again for breakfast. It's really hard to beat the food here and the atmosphere is hip too. Good place for pretty much any occasion, except maybe weight watchers. Worth a try, the Crawdad Etouffee is excellent.

I love the Delta Cafe. Every time I'm in Portland it's a mandatory stop; I could live off of the fried okra. The service is excellent & fun; they have 40 oz PBR on ice ($4.50); & the portions are huge. I like the sampler myself but the fried chicken is also great. I have yet to try the white trash meatloaf but it always sounds tempting. The pork collard greens are fantastic, even if you don't like hearty greens. Easy to find: at the corner of SE 46th & Woodstock. Roam the area, it has changed quite a bit in recent years & there are lots of stores to find something quirky & unique.

Great place. Really good food. Good service. It's kind of wacky, but a good family place. Great Sunday brunch.

I am from the South and am picky about my food. This place does it right. We went on a Tuesday night and it was quiet and not too crowded. We had fried okra as an appetizer. It was very good. Some of the people in our party wanted dipping sauce, but as is traditional in the South, we eat it plain or with catsup, which they did supply. We also had hush puppies, and they were quite good, but a little dense for my taste. I had fried chicken, hoppin' John and cheese potatos. The chicken was crunch on the outside, moist on the inside and not greasy. The hopin' John was spot on, but the potato and cheese casserole was a bit bland. The rest of the party had jambalaya and they all enjoyed it. They had various sides. The greens were tasty, and the baked beans had a great smoky flavor. Service was great, and we left full and happy.

The servings are very large and good. Cocktails are reasonable, love the Russian Princess. I’m going to try their brunch as that menu looked amazing, plus they have beginets

The bloody Mary was very good. We ate the oyster po boy, dressed, and it was pretty good, although not so good I'd order it again. My wife ate the southern scramble, and thought it was good. The fiery hot potato chips were great. The service was very good. We had eaten here years ago, and the food was better then. This place is tired and dirty. I know it's a neighborhood favorite, but it does not measure up to today's competitive standards.

On my last visit to Portland, my friend and I went to eat at the Delta Cafe..I enjoyed myself, the food is really good and alot of it, service was very good too. Price is fairly inexpensive, plus you get to see some of the more colorful citizens of Portland. I would definitly go there again on my next visit.

This place is a swing and a miss on the food front. Damn good drinks though. Dark dingy dining room. Very hip employees and fabulous pies from Meheri's bakery.

I had been doing a lot of exercise and cardio in the morning and by noon I was very hungry. The weird part was I was still wanting breakfast. I decided to try the Delta Cafe and face off against their Colossal Breakfast which consists of Fried Chicken, biscuits, bacon, sausage gravy, with two eggs and scallions on top to complete the meal. I must say it was a lot of food but it was very good. I enjoyed every bit of it. The only drawback was the taste of the coffee. It seemed kind of strong, even with cream, it seemed strong enough to float an egg in it. I highly recommend the breakfast here, but I would choose a different beverage like a hot chocolate or a hot tea the next time.

The fried okra is great, and the portions are huge!

Best comfort food! The fried chicken is delicious, and their fried okra, mashed potatoes, hush puppies all rock. Oh, and best mac and cheese I've had so far.

I tried "MOM’S CHICKEN" on the first visit, and had to come back to try Blackened "CATFISH FILLET" on the second! I was VERY pleased with both dishes (served piping hot), and I'm looking forward to trying many other items on their menu!! Can't wait to come back!!

This place has a great menu with many options hash is good cat fish was great. Steer clear of the bloody mary not good taste like ketchup. We will be back food is on point

Sometimes a large group can be an issue, but this worked out great! While visiting and taking group photos, we sampled the cat fish, the greens and other goodies from the south. The final touch was a crumbly apple cobbler or pie with no crust. We paid a combination of ways and that worked out good, too. The waitress was also helpful in using our camera to take more photos for us without rushing us to leave. What fun we had!

First ones in the door when they opened. Large group. 6 adults and 5 kids. Ordered right away. Drinks came quickly. No food. Another round. No food. Food came for kids and 3 adults. Cold. Other groups ordered, ate and left. Last time for the Delta.

A bit on the dingy side, much like New Orleans itself. The food tastes great! Excellent brunch. Good drinks.

We had a group of 13 people (we called and let them know earlier in the day), the server, Kate was wonderful! She was friendly and made us feel very comfortable. She did a great job with the large group and still handled all of the other duties well. The food was fabulous. Southern type food, fried chicken, fried oysters, Po boys, fried okra, catfish, fried pickles, hush puppies....and we tried them all! The cafe was clean, quirky and fun. I'm definitely going back!

Portland hipster vibe, good food. Service a little iffy at times. Meat loaf, friend chicken, jambalaya, fried pickles nice.

Great southern food. Funky very-portland atmosphere. Service can sometimes be slow and the hours are strange. Sun & Sat brunch, and open daily 5pm-? Other than that it's REALLY GOOD FOOD.

Kim has been wanting to take me to the Delta Café on Woodstock so we went there for brunch. I had pancakes and Kim had eggs benedict. The pancakes were good - not great and Kim really liked her meal. Overall a very good experience.

It's been a few years since we've been here as the last time was really awful. Took over 15 minutes after we seated ourselves to even be acknowledged other than the bartender who brought us water and even she didn't say one word to us!!! Great start.....NOT!! My drink was forgotten. Ugh!!! The food was good. I had the bbq baked chicken special(sauce was decent) and I really dislike the way the breast is cut. It's a small, cheap cut and not even a full breast!!!! My sides were the mac and cheese (good) and fried cheesy grits(only ok). They were having computer issues and our server apologized for the drink snafu and the time we waited. She 'made things right'. Probably will come back.

But it worked out very well. Meeting a friend for lunch, our destination was unexpectedly closed. Thought of the D.C. and realized I had been wanting to give it a try for a long time. Southern Louisianan food, gumbo, jambalaya and everything else Cajun. Very tasty, good portions, full bar! Service could have been a little better, music was a little loud. This is kind of an edgy place, that would attract a varied clientele, depending on the time of day or week. I would go back.

September 4th was our second time visiting Delta cafe. The first time we were blown away with the food and the service. The second time the service was still good but the food tasted slightly different. It seemed like it needed more seasoning. I love the huge portions and the affordable menu but I'm not sure if they changed their kitchen staff from earlier this year? I'm from the south so the sweet tea was amazing! Anyway I'm willing to give Delta cafe another chance because our first experience was so awesome.

We went to breakfast (sat and sun only) at the Delta and had a great experience. I had the pulled pork omelet (offered as a special) which was heavenly. Maybe the best omelet ever. Filled with pork, peppers, onions, garlic, and topped with a chipolte sour cream....... Unbelievable! Julie had the Brioche french toast which was terrific in its own right, but paled next to the omelet. The service was a bit on the slow side, but I like that. I want to relax when I go out, not rush through a meal. Our server was attentive, just unhurried. The atmosphere is very funky cool, dark with crazy art, goldfish, and lots of tattoos. If you're visting Portland and want a Portlandia experience (beyond VooDoo Donuts), go here!

Good Southern food, extreme portions.

It seemed there were a fair amount of "meh" type reviews for this place online, so we were a bit reluctant to try it. But, with it being in our neighborhood and all, today we decided to go check it out for brunch. We were happily surprised with good food and good service. The beignets were delicious and our meals were also tasty - the fried chicken breading is just so good. Our waitress was attentive and we got our food pretty quick. We'll definitely be coming back here!

I didn't find this place to be anything special. The food was mediocre. The blackened seasoning was too salty & spicy, it didn't do much for the catfish or chicken. Everything seemed to have jalapeno in it. There was a some great graffiti in the women's room of a junkie dog under the toilet paper holder, the highlight of the visit.

My wife and I were in Portland visiting our daughter, her husband and our three grand daughters. As one of the days during our stay was our 36th Anniversary, they asked where we would like to go to celebrate and we chose the Delta Cafe. Great place for a family dinner. There was no trouble seating the eight of us (my daughters half sister joined us). For my beverage, I had to get the quart bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon served chilled in a bucket of ice. We chose from the many different dinner offerings. I had the Jambalaya, my wife had the Shrimp and Grits, others selections ran the gamut from a salad, to ribs, meatloaf, mac and cheese ... All selections were delicious and the servings were generous, some needing boxes for what they could not finish. We highly recommend the Delta Cafe and make sure we visit at least once when in the area.

After arriving at Clay's Smokehouse Grill on 28th and Division and finding a note that it was closed for the holiday weekend, I remembered that the Delta on Woodstock had BBQ. First the staff was very friendly and efficient and offered us some beer suggestions. I was a bit disappointed that they only had brunch but they did offer several Po-Boys on the back of the menu since I wasn't looking for eggs. The Oyster Po-Boy looked dinamite (a neighbor table had this) and we split the BBQ Pulled Pork Po-Boy with Grits and Greens, totally enough for two people. FANTASTIC!!!! Even took an order of Grits home they were so good. We will go back, maybe even again this week.

The blackened chicken Poboy with slaw is always great. Love the gumbo too. As close to New Orleans as I've had since last there.

We stopped in for an early dinner-the only patrons at the time. A waitress brought us water and menus. We reviewed the menus-picked our food and waited...15 minutes by the clock. No waitress-no one bothered to even see if we were still there. We left and walked to another restaurant. Will certainly not be returning here.

We visited Delta Cafe for lunch. I loved the funky vibe this place has, the food, not as much. We had crawfish ettoufee and fried chicken. The crawfish dish was good, the fried chicken was very, very dry.

So I have been visiting Portland alot lately and have tried lots and lots of restaurants. My last visit, I spent a lot of time trying some of the best cheaper places in Portland but the whole time my mind kept going back to two weeks prior when I went to Delta! I wanted comfort food. This place has the best mashed potatoes and gravy. I could just take a vat of that gravy home with me!! The Mac and Cheese is sooo good! (The parts I managed to get from daughter before she scarfed it down lol) We did try the gumbo and it was good but I wasn't in the mood really for it. The fried chicken was delicious and juicy as well! I think the only downfall was our waiter. He wasn't really the most accommodating but i feel like this restaurant deserves 5 dots reguardless. I work in customer service and I know how draining it can be. I will be back delta!!

My favorite is their jambalaya. My son loves their pulled pork BBQ sandwiches. They BBQ all their meats on a big drum grill, outside. This place is very funky, but has good food, drinks and service. The additional sides include homemade mashed potatoes with gravy, Mac n Cheese, salads, your choice. If you like southern style food, I recommend.
Delicious Dishes
Drop into The Delta and you'll definitely be delighted you did. This distinctive local cafe' & bar is dandy on quality - don't let the quirky ambiance deceive you. The menu will immediately grab your attention with its diversity of offerings, if the cheerful service doesn't determine you an instant devotee. Every dish we sampled was delectably delicious; we especially liked the mix & match/pick any three option (for example, the mouth-watering garlic mashed potatoes, divine mac & cheese, and 'just like down-south' blackened catfish). Without a doubt, there's something here sure to satisfy every appetite, portions are generous, and plenty of reasonably-priced beer and drink choices abound (best mint julep I've ever tasted - and nowhere near Kentucky - go figure)! Smokers, you'll appreciate the private patio seating out in back. The Delta is easily an immediate favorite and feels like home. Located within the heart of Portland, it wouldn't be authentic without art - so be sure to stop and enjoy the thought-provoking large wall-mural in the main dining area.
