Indian Food for Americans

By JasperMarks |

I went here on the advise of a friend. I appreciated that the menu listed the items that were vegan. The food was OK, that's it. Just OK. I found my dish to be mostly bland. It seemed that the restaurant is appealing to a non-Indian level of spice and intensity. I'm used to eating at East India Company where the food has lots of flavor. I will say that one difference between the two restaurants is that East India Company is heavier; you can taste the oil. At Dil Se the food is much lighter; and, probably healthier in some ways. The bottom line for me is that there isn't really any great Indian food in Portland. I say this as someone who has traveled to India; and, my favorite Indian restaurant is in Singapore.

Poor service

By Alekhya |

Food was good but they delayed us for couple hours ( everyone ahead and after us had food and left) and were not apologetic about it. Apparently our order got missed in the kitchen. My lil one had to be awake until late for dinner and we were traveling to Portland ap it was a nightmare.

Unbelievably Delicious

Dil Se is absolutely top-notch Indian food by Portland's--or any place's--standards. In fact, we all agreed that is was *notably* better than the popular Bollywood Theatre restaurant. Dil Se is amazing, and every single thing that we tasted exceeded all expectations! It was, hands down, one of the best meals that we had in the city during our month-long visit. The Aloo Bonda appetizer was a savory delight to fuel one's fantasies while the uttapam (like a dosa) was great, the curries were wonderful, and (my personal favorite) the vindaloo was outstanding and very unique. Everything was flavorful and spiced perfectly, customized to our preferences as promised, and nothing was too hot or acidic. We happened to arrive right after they opened to enjoy an early dinner, and by the time we left, the place was full. It has a great interior with a nicely cozy but elegant atmosphere, too, so that made the experience all the more pleasant. HIGHLY recommend. I guarantee that you will have a hard time deciding what to order, but it is practically impossible to go wrong with anything.

Great Indian Food - Moderate Price

By NWNITTANY |

I had lunch with friends here lately and had not had good Indian Food recently until I ate at Se Dil. I had Vindaloo Chicken and it reminded me of the late time I had this dish in Singapore. The spiciness was perfect and the taste was great. I also had a Breakside IPA. One friend was vegetarian, so she had a Vegetable Uttapam. Others had the Saag. everyone was well pleased with their dishes. One person has been back 3 times already. I will definitely go back here.

Consistently excellent dishes!

Relaxed dining a few minutes walk from the art museum. Every dish I've ordered is excellent. Dosas are not found just anywhere. Kerala Fish Curry was magnificent as well as Guttivankaya Curry. Even staples like Saag Paneer were just a cut above with varied spices. This is a go to place for visiting guests.

Good Food, Good People, Good Restaurant

By JohnPortland |

The food is fresh and tasty. It reminds me of meals in rural India. The family that runs the restaurant is charming. The service was crisp. A large percentage of the diners looked like they came from Indian families — always a good sign. The restaurant was full. People were having a good time. They offer varying levels of red pepper spice on a scale of one to five. We enjoyed the broad range of flavors offered in dishes representing different regions.

From the heart

By ZenDark30 |

True their name, Dil Se serve generous portions from the heart. Easy freeway access, street parking, and easy to find a table makes this a convenient go to place. We’ve tried several dishes during previous visits. This time we had Aloo gobi, chicken vindaloo, Chennai lamb curry, and two appetizers. We came home with enough for a weeks worth of lunches. Go hungry and come home satisfied.

Exactly what we were looking for

By timiniowa |

We were going to a show downtown so wandered around the area looking for Indian food. That's Indian food, not Thai, not Chinese not Vietnamese. Indian food. And boy did we find it! One order of curry. One order of korma. Naan and raitha. Exactly what we were looking for. Wonderful food!!!

Great Takeout Food

By JohnPortland |

This is a great choice for takeout food during the pandemic. Their chicken tikka, chicken masala, aloo gobi, saag, vindaloo, and naan travel well for great meals at home. It is easy to place an order on their website. It can be delivered as well.

Southern Indian food

Not at all your typical Indian restaurant. The last time that I was here (and it certainly won't be the last time I come here) I had a dosa, which is kind of like an Indian burrito. I recommend them and you will thank me for suggesting it. It's a small restaurant on a street corner in SW Portland. Street parking only but I've never had to walk very far to find a spot. It's not noisy, and that is getting to be rare, if underappreciated.

Best Indian food in Portland

The food at Dil Se is very authentic Indian food. The portions are large We had paneer pakora which is hard to find; the dough light and crispy. The chicken65 is spiced without being stinging. The dosas are light and the aloo gobi spicey just like in Kerala. Both the atmosphere and staff are delightfully pleasant

Our favorite Indian food in

By PDX_travel |

Our favorite Indian food in Portland! My husband is Indian and grew up eating incredible food prepared by his mom, so I trust his critique of Indian food! We LOVE the bhindi masala and the masala dosa. We often get the tikka masala with no chicken so it’s full of delicious veggies. We have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered.

Fabulous food and ambiance

Everything about this place is superb. What I noticed right away is how calm I felt as son as I entered. Two people can actually hold a quiet conversation here. And the food!! There are many dishes not found at most Indian restaurants. Superb!!

Vegans, vegetarians, meat eaters all is well.

We’ve been for a few early (5 p.m.) Sunday meals before it’s packed. We REALLY enjoy the variety of flavors and ingredients. Our family of one vegan, two vegetarians and two meat eaters (who skip meat when with family) all leave satisfied.

Complex, Delicious, Spicy, Comfortable

By GeorgesHenri |

This place has been here in Portland a couple years now and and we've been here a couple of times. We've had the Gobi Manchurian, a piquant and spicy dish of deep fried cauliflower with bell peppers, lovely Papads which are baked 15 seconds in the tandoori oven, salmon marinated in yogurt & spices and baked in the tandoor, the lamb vindaloo, which you can crank up to a level 5 if you'd like. (I had the level four and found it to be plenty spicy for a boy who grew up eating Jalapenos in Texas.) Also had the Guttivankaya Curry, a deeply complex curry made with whole, deep fried little eggplants that is rich and mildish with the spices eventually creeping up on you - a very fun and delicious dish. I do think that often with Indian dishes they could use just a little bit of added salt. Very comfortable seating, which is so appreciated from Portlanders who usually have to sit on very hard wood chairs. They also have a full bar. The only downside is no lunch menu. But keep in mind the regular prices are not outrageous at all. This place is a real treat and I hope they do not succumb to a dumbing down of the spice levels that so often happens here in Portland with Indian restaurants.

Good basic Indian food.

Nicely spiced and flavorful. All of our food was prepared well and all of us at the table enjoyed our food. Pleasant service and worth the price. I recommend.

Fresh, deliciousness!

By Kathy G |

Dil Se is my new new favorite Indian restaurant. Each dish was prepared perfectly and was delicious. We ordered the Saag Paneer and the Lamb Masala with Garlic Naan and Basmati rice. The spices were fragrant and fresh. The lamb was very tender. Service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and made some excellent suggestions. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere. We’ll be back again, soon!

Great food!

By Pkan |

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, so not many people in the restaurant. There is a fair selection of North and South Indian cuisine on the menu. We got Chole Bature, and Chicken 65 as appetizers- both were spot-on for flavor. Entrees were Chicken Tikka Masala and Mysore Masala Dosa, both were excellent. DH had just returned from a trip to Chennai, and vouched for he authentic taste of the Sambar. Lunch entrees were generous enough to make dinner with the leftovers. Service was friendly and quick, without hovering. Will definitely return, and would recommend it highly for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, authentic Indian meal.

Authentic taste delight

By William F |

There is a great selection in the offering of dishes and the dishes we ordered were done correctly and with authentic flavor. Five of us shared dishes family style to sample the variety of flavors. We had appetizers of Ipa, a Spinach Pakora and Masala Dosa. They were a great beginning. Our main course consisted of: Bindi Masala, Vindaloo, Derala Fish Curry, (great curry flavor), and Prawn Masala. You can order the degree of spiciness that suits your taste. For a cooling dessert we had Rasmalai and a Gulab. Both were sweet and refreshing. Warm and comfortable ambiance, attentive service with adequate explanation of dishes with which we were not familiar. Street parking, total cost for five of us was $125.

Good food/ service/ ambience at reasonable prices

By Sonali K |

Went in at 5:10 pm for dinner on a Thursday. Was full of guests within an hour! Best Chai Tea ive had in ages. Methuvada n Dosa were fantastic but coconut chutney was missing, they had peanut chutney which is not an ideal accompaniment! Owner Mrs was hands on taking orders n holding a tight rein which is always good,

My brother and I ate dinner here. I had vegetable kuruma. He had chicken tikka masala. Both were perfect. Tha naan was freshly baked and delicious. I have eaten in Indian restaurants all over the world. This was one of the best ever!
