Five Star with an !

By DonaldR912 |

This well regarded restaurant handles success without missing a beat. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is high energy, and the waiters and managers somehow keep things moving without delays. Don't let the long waiting line keep you from eating here. Tables turn over quickly and whatever your wait is it will be worth it. The Dim Sum melts in your mouth, the salt and pepper squid is sooooo goood. Duck noodles likewise. Scallion pancakes!!!! Garlic string beans... Run don't walk to this wonderful restaurant.

Soup Dumpling Heaven!

By Macarena S |

Fantastic find! Recommended by someone in Reading Market. The soup dumplings are to die for! Amazing!!! You will not be disappointed.

Great dim sum

By jer b |

Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, this restaurant serves excellent dim sum. There are no carts as the restaurant in a long narrow space, but the steamed and fried dumplings are made fresh and worth the wait. There are plenty of vegetarian choices and wonderful shrimp shu mai. The noodles with scallion sauce were extremely good. Nice friendly staff, who served the food the instant it was done and kept our water glasses filled. Highly recommended.

Excellent Choice in Chinatown

By NJBeachCruiser |

We tried this restaurant based on the reviews. I am so glad we did. The soup dumplings and scallion pancakes were amazing! Other dishes we tried such as pork sauced noodles and sesame shrimp and chicken were excellent as well. I will definitely go back the next time I am in the area.

Great food bring cash

By Scott |

Fast service, great food and wonderful atmosphere!! The dumplings were amazing, Side note don’t forget to bring cash as credit cards are not accepted.

Food was ok but people are herded in-and-out like cattle

By thebigb5 |

I and a family member visited in a Saturday evening and the line was almost out of the door. We thought this place must have outstanding food! Well it was bedlam with so many people, the same “hostess” continually asking how many people in our party. And after about 45 min we got seated in front of the kitchen where we got stared at by the cooks for about half of our meal.... that was pleasant... we had a fan club! 😤 After it took us that long to be seated, I did not dare to ask for another table!! 😕 It was our first time there and we needed just a little input/some questions answered before ordering and we told the waitress that up front. Well...... boy.... why did we say that. She was almost angry but definitely extremely annoyed, over and above any language issues there MAY have been in understanding our questions. That said... I ordered the pan fried dumplings. They were really good. My family member got a noodle dish. That was just ok. AND WHAT TOPPED IT ALL OFF after the wait, seating so close I could almost kiss my dining neighbors, the impatient waitress and the staring cooks, they only take CASH of which neither of us had enough or saw a supposed sign at the front of the Resturant (unfortunately never saw it or considered that this type of Resturant would require cash... we were just hungry and wanted food yesterday). I had to leave my family member and go search for an ATM in a safe feeling location, in the rain. Not good. Got back safe and sound but... Now that you know the above, you are armed with info to help you so that maybe you can enjoy your visit, somewhat, knowing what could be expected.

Would not recommend

By Allesvonhier |

First of all, the service was very unfriendly - especially the managerin (we found out later that this woman is the managerin). She never said a word or looked at us, even when she put our food on the table. Food was really not good - we ordered a noodle dish (vegetarian) but it came with tofu (was not declared on the menu) and only a very small portion of vegetables. The Dim Sums came way too late (we already finished our dish a while) and they didn‘t even apologized for it. We ordered them with chicken and the chicken was still red inside??? The managerin told us it‘s because they cook it in a red sauce but that‘s really confusing, especially with chicken which has to be cooked very well.. At least we didn‘t pay a lot but even this money was definitly not worth it. We were very disappointed because the ratings for this place are so good - we really can‘t understand and would not go to this place again.

Dinner

By Travl_lovr_2 |

A guy we met on our tour told us to try David's in Chinatown although we went and they were closed so we asked a guy who looked like he lived close where we should go and he recommended Dim Sum Garden. The chive and pork pot stickers were delicious! My chicken fried rice was ok and my son's chicken on a stick was too overcooked. I'd go there again if we were in the area but I'd stick to just the pot stickers.

Worth the wait

By Janice |

A great restaurant in the heart of Philly chinatown Soup dumplings dim sum all fantastic! Great service, great prices .... come early .. worth the wait!

Amazing soup dumplings

By AnnaO99 |

We had the best fried pork soup dumplings ever! It was by far the favorite thing we ordered! Food came out fast and everything was delicious!

Wonderful food-but cash only

By jdt559 |

A coworker and I ended up in this restaurant by chance while in Philadelphia. The atmosphere is hectic but fun. The service is great and efficient. The steamed soup dumplings are excellent as was the shrimp on a stick. The prices are very reasonable. It is popular on Saturday nights, but well worth the wait. Again, it’s cash only. It’s the best cash I’ve spent in a long time.

Original Chinese Cooking

By Marty L |

Excellent site for Dim Sum and other Chinese cooking. Cash Only and you might have to wait to be seated as there are no reservations. Suggest you go with at least 4 people or more to truly enjoy the variety of Dim Sum offered. Variety provides great opportunity to enjoy this crowded atmospeher.

Complete madhouse, but totally worth it!

By Kim H |

This place is a madhouse, but the food and experience are worth it. The crab soup, pork dim sum is a must. The soup is delicious. It takes some special care in eating. You may want to check out how others are managing as you wait for a table. The bok choy is delicious. You cannot eat here without touching people it is so crowded. Just go with the flow, be kind and visit with the people around you and it adds to the fun!

Soup dumplings delish.. not sure about what else.... but glad I went...

By froggy618 |

This place was 2 blocks from our hotel and I was so pleased to find soup dumplings in Philly! We went around 9PM and it was still very packed. It was 96 degrees this day and they didn't have any ICE for water. That was not very pleasant. The waiters seemed nice enough. We had the crabmeat and pork XLB and the pan fried pork dumplings. The fried ones were not very good. Skin was too thick. But definitely try the soup dumplings!! Delish!

OK Dim Sum - wish it had been a bit better

By rtfax |

Went here for Dim Sum. It was OK, Not bad, not great. Near the Convention Center. Affordable, clean.

Delicious noodles

By Robert W |

The noodles are delicious, the food quality is excellent. Portions are generous and prices reasonable.

We loved the soup dumplings!

By dswesq1 |

We were there with a party of 12. The wait was short, service was good and the food was amazing. It was a but loud in the restaurant, but we enjoyed it overall and will go back.

Good soup dumplings

By jonathb5 |

The dumplings are the star here and you will get an excellent dumpling meal for pennies on the dollar of what you will spend elsewhere. I had the pork soup dumplings which you eat with a spoon to capture the delicious broth and the scallion dumplings which were good but not great (I should have had the recommended beef dumplings). The total bill for this delicious meal was $15.

Delicious. Payment only in cash.

By Maksym L |

We came to the Dim Sum Garden restaurant by accident, just walking around China town and noticing the large number of visitors. The establishment is very popular and some visitors had to stand in line until a table became available, but we were lucky and found a place right away. The establishment has a fairly simple, but stylish interior. The service is fast and friendly. The waiter quickly took the order and brought the drinks almost immediately. I liked the kitchen. We ordered dim sum with pork and broth inside (the dough was very tender, and the taste of the soup and meat made you want to take the next portion. Very tasty), chicken on skewers (delicious. The meat is tender and a good balance of spices) and chicken in sweet and sour sauce (delicious , but not for everyone). Drinks included beer and alcoholic cocktails. After we ate, the waiters, continuing to smile, began to show with all their appearance that it was time and honor to know. They brought the check, although we didn’t ask, they came up several times and asked if they could collect the payment, etc. In general, we decided not to test their patience, paid and left. A good place. I recommend. For information: only cash is accepted for payment.

such good dumplings!!

By MeraldaSue |

I have to say their dumplings are delicious! We LOVED the pork soup dumplings- we ordered the spicy ones by mistake and were glad we did. My husband had the crispy noodles and said they were the best he's had in a long time. The selections were many, and it was order off the menu vs carts, so everything came out wonderfully hot. They only take cash...but have an ATM in the foyer.

5 Times FTW

By Sabrina H |

Ok. This is the best dim sum in Philly for the fifth time in a row. There is nothing left to say...we'll be back a sixth without a doubt.

Unexpectedly Great!

By mhfire |

Man you don't want to miss this place. We went not knowing what to expect. Restaurant was pretty big inside but almost walked right by. The service was quick and food was great. We ordered and it came out very quickly. NOTE - CASH ONLY!! They do have an ATM inside the front door for convenience but we fortunately had enough cash when we went.

Decent food

By rexpig |

The name is not quite right -- you get menu choices of dim sum served at your table and the place is quiet, narrow and linear and not a bustling hall where carts are moving around and you point to something that you do not quite identify at first glance but you would like to try. The food was very good and the prices were reasonable when we visited. The back of the room was a half-floor higher and it had the kitchen on one side while the other side was crowded with what looked like spare furniture. Strangely, they don't accept cards: payment must be in cash and they point helpfully to an ATM in the corner. The tables are slightly greasy. The soup dumplings are nice. It's a contrast between staid and expected, and variety and adventuresome. Both can be nice at different times. Overall, it's a good place to eat, but it's not significantly different from a typical restaurant.

Lived up to expectations

By Girlymurley |

Saw photos on Instagram and had to go. Bring cash. We had the steamed pork dim sum, pan fried beef dumplings, and a potato cake with beef. All very tasty. Fun place.

Dim Yum!

By Brianabulls |

I’ve only ever had Dim Sum in China, but this restaurant immediately reminded me of my travels. The staff keeps the line moving and efficient to cut down wait times. The line seems long but moves quick. We ordered a plethora of food and dim sum. We had wonton soup, scallion pancakes, and spring rolls. We ordered spicy pork soup, chicken, beef, shrimp, and veggie dim sum. We obviously tried the whole menu....everything was great. They all had flavor and were very fresh. There are 3 sauces on the table for the dim sum and my favorite was a spicy chili oil sauce. The food came out quick and hot. Would definitely recommend.

Inedible. How on Earth did it get so many positive reviews?

By David N |

I cannot conceive of how this place got so many good reviews. The garlic eggplant was 100% tasteless (like eating chewy purple cellulose), the crystal veggie dumplings were full of rubbery, foul tasting veggie bits, and the noodles were watery. Four people, four bad dishes, and a very noisy and unpleasant environment to eat in at dinnertime (why, why, why was this place packed? Do Philidelphians have no better sense of Chinese food?). I will say to its credit that the service is excellent - friendly, prompt waitstaff, but that's the only thing going for this place. Maybe the meat dishes are better? (We're all vegetarian, so we didn't sample any) Or maybe Philly residents need to take a field trip to New York, Boston or San Fran's Chinatown to see what this stuff is supposed to taste like.

Very authentic Chinese Restaurant

By TathianaKarine |

Hard to choose what to eat among all the options. We asked them to help us and everything was tasteful. We went with grab Rangoon, beef fried noodles, and pork soup dumplings. If you’re looking for a very authentic Chinese restaurant this is no wrong.

Fresh and delicious

By Tam_e_m207 |

We had dinner here and everything was fresh and delicious. Great dumplings, and the pork fried rice was so good I couldn't stop eating it.

Great food. Can get crowded

By Stephen M |

Excellent food. The soup dumplings are a specialty. The line never seems to send but it does move quickly.

I wasn’t impressed with this

By Wendy M |

I wasn’t impressed with this restaurant. First service was not very friendly. They seemed like they didn’t like working here. We had the scallion pancake, and pork dim sum which was tasty but we had the wonton soup which we found to be really disgusting. The wontons were very mushy and did not taste very well. I’m not sure what was in the broth but it tasted really foul. Entrees were just typical. Nothing fantastic. We looked up where to eat inChinatown and this had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Not planning on going back.

Awesome.

By Brad C |

Not sure what all we can say. It was a long wait to get a table. Interesting that the line for a table winds into the restaurant and up a ramp while standing in amongst the tables. We had a chicken dish, noodle dish and some dumplings. Excellent. Excellent. Would love to go back any time. Very tasty.

You gotta eat here

By Ruth R |

Loved! Shanghai dumplings with pork..... the best! Fresh shrimp and broccoli, spring roll..... coconut bubble tea, I can still taste it’s lushness. Will definitely eat here with every Philadelphia trip. Staff was so friendly, helped us learn how to eat the steamed dumplings... the broth in them made me swoon.

First Dim Sum Experience

By Joe . |

This is the hottest spot in Philadelphia’s China Town for a reason. So worth your attention. The food was amazing and for the first time having dim sum it was a great choice. Get the Roast Pork Buns and the Spicy Pork Soup Dumplings.

Unremarkable eating experience! Will not return!

By Gl_Trekr |

We had lunch here on Thursday at about 12:30pm and was seated as soon as we arrived. We ordered chicken soup dumplings, roast pork buns, scallion pancakes and Singapore maifun. The food is hohum at best. The pork buns were rubbery tough on the outside and the filling were hot - obvious they had been reheated in a microwave for way too long! The scallion pancakes were deep fried flour without any scallions and very chewy. The chicken soup dumplings had hardly any soup in them and the skin was thick and doughy. The Singapore maifun was ok but not great - greasy and lots of tumeric! We were hungry and tired after walking for 3 hours and the only redeeming factor for the lacklustre quality of the food was the dipping sauce! The waiting staff were abrupt, bathroom was filthy and general cleaniness of the restaurant was sub standard. I am Asian and have lived in big cities around the world including Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, London, NY, DC and now Philly. I have had lots of Asian food especially Chinese and Cantonese and I will say that there is nothing authentic about the dim sum here. Nothing is fresh ... Just frozen products microwaved before serving. Overall, an unremarkable experience and we will not return.

Worst Microwaved dim sum I ever had!

By Islandgirl |

Microwaved dim sum I ever had! Due to Covid we have know choice but to try this place out as we were craving for dim sum. If you want dim sum go across the street to the real dim sum places. They have a very limited selection. We ordered chicken feet, siu mai and Ha gow. The siu mai was sweet. I chicken feet was disgusting and it taste weird and mushy. The ha gow was the worst as it melts and breaks apart on your chop stick.had to spoon up the little pieces. Overall everything taste and have a texture like it was microwaved. Worst $50 spent!!!

good dumplings

By sunmaid |

The line was long but went pretty fast. We tried a variety of dumplings and they were all good. Mapo tofu was just ok. We had a beef dish recommended by the waiter, forgot the name, which was good. All in all a good solid 4 star restaurant for good food and efficient service.

Great choice in China Town!

By Travel X |

My family and I really enjoyed this place…Noodles and duck were simply amazing…and the fact that it only takes a few minutes to get your is great.

A warning - CASH ONLY location

By bedot |

First - the food is very good. I would recommend going just for the variety in the Dim Sum and the taste. We throughly enjoyed the food. Second - the downside how we saw it.... there is no where that we see is posted "cash only" nor was it stated at the time we sat down. Being that we were just arriving in Philadelphia, we were not aware that this might be a common practice here. So No mention which we would have appreciated being a larger group of 5. Would we have ordered differently - maybe. Would we have considered a different location - probably. We had cash to pay - it was more just the principal that we were not told until after we recieved the bill. So if going = have cash with you.

Not Bad, CASH ONLY

By emshabem |

I wrote 3 but I would actually give it a 3.75. The menu is pretty expansive, the dim sum options were good (though they didn't have a ton) and the portions were big. The reason it's not a 4 or 5 is because they only accept cash, you had to order the dim sum in large quantities and not individually, and the bill added up quickly for not a lot of food. Overall it was not bad, and I might go again, but it was not great.

Tasteless Food, Dirty Restaurant

By ok12345 |

The food was either tasteless or had been sitting out too long. The green beans were withered, the sweet and sour soup had an acid taste, with string things floating around in it, the garlic chicken was dried up chicken and strange shaped mushrooms with no flavor, the pork dumplings had gristle in them. The only things that tasted ok was the crab rangoon and the noodles with pork. The entire ordering process was a joke, they had you give a credit card number, but then said the number didn't go thru, someone mentioned you could do Venmo and then I tried to scan the code and it said there was no internet connection. The young woman who answered the phone was rude and unhelpful. I don't honestly understand why this place has any good reviews. We had an amazing meal last weekend in Chinatown and thought this might be similar. I can't say anything positive about the experience. The food literally smelled bad in the bag, after eating we agreed to just throw out the leftovers they were so foul tasting.

Great soup dumplings and grilled buns!

By boymomdfw |

The soup dumplings are giant! They are not little. But full of soup and very good. We also got the buns that are grilled on one side. Those were great as well. You have to pay for the white rice which is annoying. But the dishes were good as well.

Unbelievably delicious

By Becster |

I took my husband here for dinner on our 24 hour get away. The food was insanely good. Get the pan fried dumplings - perfection.

Amazing dumplings in China town

By jnsbradley |

Our son and his girlfriend have raved about this place and now we understand why. They have outdoor seating and take out. We were able to get a table. Everything we ordered was amazing. We definitely hope to go again!

Amazing legit food!

By Happygoluckyang |

I had heard so many good things about this restaurant! It was quite small and packed people in, and it was really hot in there. We got red bean buns and Kung Pao Chicken and it was amazing! Go for the food, not so much the ambience.

Worth the wait

By 125742 |

We were there on a Sunday around 6 pm and the line was spilling out the door on to the street. There was also a group on the sidewalk waiting for take out. I can understand why, the spicy soup dumplings were outstanding. Cash only.

Popular Dim Sum in Philly’s Chinatown

By James S |

A very popular Chinatown dim sum restaurant. Very popular with a young her crowd. Stylish interior with nice bright feel. Service was friendly. Dim sum was very good, but not great. Some of my selections tasted premade and reheated.

Visited twice in one week

By Susannahg23 |

A coworker of mine recommended this place after I said I’ve been dying to try soup dumplings. It did not disappoint. I went with my brother. We tried pork soup dumplings, beef dumplings, pork with sauce noodle, and pan fried potato pancake stuffed with beef. Everything was very tasty, but the dumplings were what really sold me. Both dumplings were great but the soup dumpling was so good. Part was that it was different (for me) and that the broth added a depth of flavor that don’t get with a regular dumpling. This was a Wednesday. On Monday I went back again with my brother and brought a friend too. Again we got pork soup dumplings and the pork with noodle sauce and in addition tried the crab and pork soup dumplings, the pork and chive dumplings, and a couple moon cakes. Again everything was very tasty but the winner were the soup dumplings. Specifically the just pork soup dumplings. The crab and pork were good but you didn’t really taste the crab, so you end up paying more for something that tastes the same as the basic pork. Regardless we still ate them all. This is a nice place for a good lunch or a casual dinner. People complained that it was cash only. Who cares. Hit an ATM before you go, if not they have one. It’s worth it. The three of us got five dishes that stuffed us to the brim along with some sodas and paid $18 a piece . .. with tip! Can’t beat it.

Subject line - Vomit and doggy bag 9/27/20

By Live M |

( email written to this restaurant the next morning ) To whom it may concern , We dined last night around 5pm at your establishment. We were 4 adults who sat inside by the drink cooler and first set of steps. We ordered pork dumplings , crab & pork dumplings , chicken fried rice , and edamame. Drinks were one can of Sapporo and 2 green milk teas. Service was very fast with food. BUT , within 5 minutes , one person got ill and could not finish her meal. They used the bathroom and vomited. In a room adjacent to the bathroom , she saw raw meat uncovered on plates before and after using the bathroom facilities. She used the bathroom for about 15 minutes. This is a long time for meat to sit out. The rest of us finished about 1/2 our meals and got the remaining food to go in a doggy bag. We pay and leave. We walk one block from your restaurant and a 2nd person gets sick. I quickly use the white plastic doggy bag for her to vomit in. We placed the bag in 1 of the 2 dumpsters near the market selling live crabs. At home we decide to throw the remaining food out. No doubt this was some sort of food poisoning or extremely expired product being served.

Fabulous food; Ambiance meh

By CatheAtlanta_GA |

But hey it’s a dim sum joint! This place is slammed open to close but the friendly staff runs a tight ship and manages to get you in and out quickly without feeling rushed. Fantastic selection. Every morsel delicious!!

Excellent dim sum and service

By Sharon O |

Two of us went to this restaurant after the PMA craft show at the Convention Center in Phila. The wait was moderate. The food was excellent. The servers were very attentive and helpful selecting items from the menu. The came back to check on us several times to make sure everything was ok and to ask if we needed anything else. This is the fourth time I've been to this restaurant at different times of day with 2-4 people. The food and service is consistently excellent.

Very good

By Don T |

A real hive of activity. Despite that the service was good and very friendly. Excellent noodle dishes and soup dumplings. A.azing how fast the kitchen cranks out tasty dishes.

Dim sum yum!

By NYMertzy |

Stopped here on a whim. In town for a conference with zero recommendations. This place looked busy and bright so went in. So happy I did!! Best soup dumplings. The broth was so good! Shrimp rolls delicious. General Tsos chicken was actually not spicy at all but was more savory. Nice crunch. Crab Rangoon was made fresh, the filling full on tastiness. Shrimp and broccoli had huge Shrimp and was very good!! So happy to come across this place. Delish!!! One thing ...its cash only. There is an ATM in the vestibule.

Great place

By Tyler B |

I love their soup dumplings. One night I ordered two of them and a beer for $33 and was very happy. Several nights later, a friend and I shared two orders of the soup dumplings plus several other items -- good price, good food. The only problem with the restaurant is that it's very popular, so don't be surprised if you have to wait. It's located in the heart of Chinatown next to the convention center.

Excellent and inexpensive dim sum

By cpgz |

This place has awesome food and lots of choices. We ordered several different items including steamed pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings, scallion pancakes, chicken on a stick, pork with sauce noodles, and soup dumplings. The only thing we did not like were the soup dumplings (but that could just be us). The place is dark, long and narrow - so the "ambience" leaves something to be desired, but it is authentic dim sum. Our server was helpful in helping us choose and the menu has pictures which was also helpful. I also liked the way they staggered the dishes, bringing 2-3 dishes at a time. Be warned - they only take cash, but here is an ATM in the front of the place.

So much variety need to go back again

By Ellen L |

Went with spouse and teenager, its loud in the restaurant but service is fast once seated. General Tsos Chicken was great! Noodle dishes great. Braise beef cold appetizer dont bother. Chicken on stick dark meat makes it moist but batter needs some extra flavor. Sweet and Sour pork/boneless ribs were ok as left overs...thought they were going to be ribs on a bone so slightly disapponted when they arrived. Need to go back to try a variety of dumplings since many people around us got them and seemed to enjoy them and need to try their soup.

Get the Bok Choy

By mamariabear |

We were in Philly for three nights and ended up eating here two of the nights, we enjoyed it that much! We were headed to another restaurant close by and when we walked by we saw Dim Sum Garden was packed. We took it as a sign it must be good, and we were not disappointed! The service is good and the food is excellent. First night we had sauteed bok choy, steamed pork dumplings, scallion pancakes and red bean cakes; second night was steamed chicken dumplings, wonton soup (best we've ever had), and repeat of bok choy and red bean cakes. The bok choy is SO GOOD, even my husband liked it and he is not a fan of vegetables. This place is cash only, so bring your cash if you go!

Life changing dim sum

By Dana S |

Delicuous veggies, dumplings, and buns, even good choices for a vegetarian. Yes, it's cash only--weird! But sooo delicious. Service and atmosphere are on the casual side. Very busy so pick a non peak time. Highly recommend.

It’s always good. Very consistent. I always get the spicy soup dumplings and they are always delicious. The biggest problem I have with them, is I have to wait a few seconds to eat the first one otherwise I burn the roof of my mouth

Great Xiao Long Bao

By Theo Sxm |

I have to say that the food was delicious. We took the "xiao long bao" and some dim sum. There are a lot people, the reservation is not possible, but generally the waiting is of 15-20 minutes max. Only Cash. They have their own Atm machine, with commissions 🤔. Anyway, the main thing is that the food is of quality! Cheers...

Didn’t live up to the hype

By thomas a |

Went for an early dinner at 4 pm and therefore got seated right away. After we ordered it was just a few minutes before our first item we came out to the table. The service was really good. The food doesn’t come all at once which is great you don’t have to wait to eat. The server filled out water numerous times during our meal. My wife and I split the spring rolls, chicken on a stick, pork bao buns, and the crabmeat soup dumplings. We have heard from so many people that the soup dumplings were phenomenal. We both didn’t think much of them. I actually don’t think they had much flavor at all to be honest. Of all the things we tried I would say chicken on a stick had the most flavor. Our meal was very cheap only 22 bucks for all that we shared. The price is definitely the best part about this place.

Excellent dumplings!

By Bradley C |

My fiance brought her mother and I here for lunch; she attends a nearby university, and stops in frequently with her classmates. It did not fail to impress. The dumplings were excellent; we chose three different styles, and shared them amongst the group. Service and price were fine. Worthwhile stop if you're in Chinatown.

Memorable experience

By K W |

Went here on a Sunday afternoon based on positive reviews. Was expecting a line but sat down right away. Before we had a chance to order the table next to us recognized us as tourists and starting making recommendations. They even offered us samples of their dumplings. Food was great and reasonably priced. We enjoyed the pork dumplings, veggie fried rice, a noodle dish and green beans. (Also ordered shrimp dumplings which were ok but would skip next time). Everything seemed clean and even my very picky 13 year old left full and happy. I will say the friendly folks next to us pushed this up from a very good to a great experience. But regardless I would eat here again given the chance.

Pretty authentic

By Steve C |

I found this place on Yelp. Very authentic, says a real Chinese. The taste of fried rice cake and wonton, is very close to Shanghai, where I was from. The Steam pork dumplings (xiao long bao), taste good but slightly big in size. Therefore it is easily broken and letting the soup escape. Pity is that they only take cash. But totally worth the experience and money!

Good

By Rose H |

Good very good ,staff very nice, right in China town, good prices,me and my granddaughter ate for 15 dollars, but be aware cash only, there is an atm inside the foyer though

Terrible place. Decent beef dumplings.

By Enrique L |

Not cheap, very expensive for the portions. Trip Advisor is wrong. Rude staff. 5/10 for “best” noodles. 6.5/10 for dumplings. TERRIBLE staff except one new young guy. Don’t come here if you know of good dumplings :) you will be mad you sent 50 bucks to the trash.

Very Good for the Price, Good Service and a Shanghai-Style Menu

By Dionges1 |

Ate lunch with Family members visiting a Nephew living in Philadelphia--this is one of his favorite restaurants. Service was quick and helpful sorting through the menu. Restaurant gets crowded and can be noisey. Located in China Town which is an interesting area to walk around. This is a good Chinese restaurant, do not expect Fine Dining. As usual in Chinese Restaurants, the larger the party the more dishes that can be shared.

Soup Dumplings Are Great!

By Paul M |

Dim Sum Garden has great food! The place is always crowded - that's a good sign that the food is good. We ate here around 5:30pm on a Saturday night - a bit on the early side to avoid some crowds. We had a short wait, but it was worth it! As we ate, we noticed how much longer the line got. If you go on a Saturday night for dinner, expect to wait. The soup dumplings are fantastic! Lots of great food choices. The waiter(s) are very helpful and can answer questions if you are not sure what you want. The food comes out real fast. That way, they keep the crowds moving throughout the night. The place is known for its soup dumplings, so you have to at least try the dumplings if you are going for the first time. You get plenty of food - we saw lots of people taking home leftovers. The food is also very reasonably priced. It is quite a busy place, but well worth the trip. Oh... bring cash. Meals are paid for by cash only. If you forget, there is an ATM machine in the entrance.

Fast serving, decent food, clean and modern

By Karen H |

Liked the look of this restaurant because it was large airy bright, modern and clean. This is different to many of the restaurants in Chinatown. Servers were attentive and fast. We had a bottle of beer literally within a minute of sitting down. No bad thing! We ordered a dim sum appetiser as this is clearly their speciality! The restaurant logo is a dim sum sat in a ceramic soup spoon. And they really are that big! They are three bites at least! A bit of broth inside makes them interesting, but not desperate to re-order tasty. Main meals we ordered General Tsao chicken and Kung Po chicken. Both sauces and consistency were very tasty. Large portions. Chicken thigh meat was used which is lower quality than fillet and probably why I notched the rating from five stars to 4 stars. Cash only restaurant. With a six piece dim sum starter +2 mains plus rice +2 beers came to around $70 including tip.

overated

long ungainly restaurant..waiting is chaotic. the soup dumplings have a thick stodgy casing. the rest of the food is very average. prices are good

Good Dim Sum

By jonathb5 |

Had the soup and fried pork dumplings. Both were good in their own way. The setting is utilitarian; however, the prices are more than reasonable ($20 for a good meal). The service is on and off but good enough for what you get. Reliable and good dim sum.

Great spot

By EH |

I've been here twice now and both times were great. The rice noodle dish, the spicy pork soup dumplings, scallion cakes, curry chicken cakes... all were fantastic. Will absolutely visit this restaurant again.

Nice Chinses Food

By larryderm |

We have ordered a few times from their extensive take-out menu. The food arrives ahead of time, and it is plentiful.

Best dim sum I have had

By Ehart002 |

This place is great! Long line for lunch on a Friday which tells you this place is doing things right. Our waiter was funny and helped us order the correct amount of food for our table. Prices are good and overall it was a great experience.

Excellent Value, Great Food

By railwayjeff |

We wished we had great food like this at home. The food was excellent and best i have ever had. Service was good even though it was very busy. Great dumplings!!!!

Ok! Didn’t feel clean

By Brandi T |

The food was pretty good, but the restaurant didn’t feel clean. The bathroom floor was very wet and slippery. The water Glasses were old and stained.

Great Meal!

If you love dim sum, you’ve probably heard of Dim Sum Garden in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. Known for their delicious, freshly made Shanghai-style dim sum, Dim Sum Garden has been a staple in Philly’s food scene since 2013. But now, they’ve made an exciting move to a bigger, better location at 1024 Race St., and trust me, you’ll want to check it out! A Little Background on Dim Sum Garden The story of Dim Sum Garden begins in 2003 when Chef Shizhou Da made her way to the U.S. with an authentic family recipe for Xiao Long Bao (Chinese steamed soup dumplings). Chef Da is the 5th generation of the family that created the very first Xiao Long Bao in China, so when she says these dumplings are special, she means it! With over 30 years of experience making homemade dim sum, Chef Da’s skill and dedication shine through in every dish. After a few successful years in North Jersey and New York, Chef Da and her daughter Sally decided to bring Shanghai’s finest dumplings to Philadelphia in 2013. The original location quickly became a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, drawing people in with its mouthwatering dumplings and traditional dim sum offerings. The Big Move Now, Dim Sum Garden has moved to a new location at 1024 Race St., just down the block from their original spot. This new space is double the size of the old one, with 200 seats—perfect for larger groups, families, and even private events! The stylish new restaurant features a gorgeous backlit ceiling that looks like the ripples of a serene pond, adding a relaxing vibe to the dining experience. There’s also a balcony overlooking a full bar where you can enjoy beer, wine, and cocktails. It’s a perfect spot for casual meals or special celebrations. What to Order Now, let’s get to the food! During my visit, I tried a variety of dishes, and everything was absolutely amazing. Shanghainese Soup Dumplings: These dumplings were the highlight of my meal. They’re delicate, perfectly steamed, and bursting with flavorful broth. They’re definitely a must-try! Beef Ho Fun: A savory stir-fry with tender slices of beef and thick rice noodles—this dish was flavorful and comforting. Roast Pork Bao Bun: Soft, pillowy buns filled with juicy roast pork. Every bite was a burst of flavor! Diced Chicken with Chili Pepper: If you like a little spice, this dish is for you! The chicken was perfectly cooked and packed with heat from the chili peppers. New Additions: Beer & Wine! One of the most exciting updates is that Dim Sum Garden is now serving beer and wine at their new location! Whether you’re in the mood for a cold beer to pair with your dumplings or a glass of wine to complement your meal, they’ve got you covered. This makes the dining experience even better, especially with their spacious new setup and cozy balcony overlooking the bar. Why You Should Visit Whether you’re a dim sum fan or a newcomer to Shanghai-style dishes, Dim Sum Garden is a must-visit spot in Philadelphia. Their commitment to using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes shines through in every bite. Plus, with the new, larger space and the addition of beer and wine, it’s the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or a family gathering. So next time you’re in the mood for some of the best dumplings in Philly, head to Dim Sum Garden at 1024 Race St. You won’t be disappointed!

Best Dim Sum in Philly

By MSW |

Absolute best dumpling spot in Philly! Crab Pork Soup dumplings are my favorite but they have a great variety of options for pescatarians too! Soups, noodles, rice, and great prices.

Food is the highlight not the space

By cercis |

This is an efficient high turnover place with very good food. Not a place where you want to hang out and enjoy a slow dinner. There was a 20 person line when we arrived but we only waited 10 minutes. It was hot inside. It is a poorly lit space. Long and narrow. The dumplings and dry fried green beans were very good.

Great dumplings / Cash ONLY

By David P |

This place is cash only and very busy. Has a combination of locals and tourists. Bathrooms could use some remodeling. Dumplings are very tasty. A bit pricer than they were a few years ago. Great to come here with a group as you share 6-9 dishes per table. Service is fast. Service is moderately friendly; servers want to get food to table with very little chatting or pleasantries 😐. Parking is very difficult around here. Make sure to Uber or taxi here and then walk to Reading Terminal for dessert 🎂

WOW

By HIS |

My daughter just moved near this restaurant. We got take out and you have got to try the soup dumplings, plus anything else like a dumpling. If you do the soup, realize they are hot, and I recommend eating them over a bowl to catch the soup. I never had them before and they were excellent. The entrees were as well.

Excellent food

By LRgmami72 |

The food is excellent. Very authentic and well prepared. We enjoys almost everything. The exception was one aspect of the service. The wait was not bad and our waiter was nice. But, there was little patience for rookies of the menu and somewhat of a language barrier. This led to a missunderstanding resulting in two different eggplant dishes being prepared. Normally if this happens the server sort of apologizes but instead we got yelled at and blamed. This took a little away from the experience, but overall a good experience.

Bad. Surprise!

By Motowners |

I wonder what happened. I have eaten at the Garden many times and the food had been pretty good, sometimes wonderful. This time, however (isn't there always a "however" lurking in the background?) our meals-for-4 were delivered promptly (yay!) but the steamed pork buns were awful. I'm talking "pillows of leather" tough, not "oh, how delightfully chewy these ornery little devils are" tough. If I had to bet, they were left over from the previous night. I probably would not order them (or there) again, at least not for lunch. A major error.

Great soup dumpling, terrible service and CASH only

By Yardley Traveler |

It is a very busy restaurant, they make great soup dumplings and pan fry dumpling, others not too impressive. We had to wait more than 15 minutes for the seats and more than 20 minutes for the food. Service is a mass, no one is real know who is in charge. Some server was not friendly at all.

Good Soup Dumplings

By mandp2go |

It's not easy to find good soup dumplings but these made the grade. The other dim sum The bok choy was also a good choice along with the har gau. But the scallion pancake lacked scallion and was doughy. The vegetable soup dumplings lacked any flavor.

So-so

By kdetre |

The food was good, but the atmosphere had a lot to be desired; very crowded, noisy, and dirty. If you can get past these shortfalls, the Chinese food was good.

Great homemade dumplings

By Ars1300 |

Very busy place. The pork dumplings where very good and freshly made. Great flavor for the other entrees general tso and stir fry noodles with seafood. Expect to wait but line moves quickly . Cash only

Hidden Treaseure right next to our Hotel

By P7525GFjohnl |

We had several high dollar meals while in Philadelphia for the annual Army Navy Football Game. One Asian restaurant was really good and a tavern was way too expensive. We dined at Dim Sum Garden on our way out to the airport. It was literally next to our hotel and within 200 yards of where the Flyers and 76ers play. The food was awesome as was the service and the bill was less than $40 for 4 people eating a light lunch.

Bring cash

By Tracey M |

The food was really good. I ordered the pork dumplings and garlic sauce chicken. There was so much I had leftovers for lunch the next day. My complaint is they are cash only. If there was a sign I missed it. Of course they had an ATM available, but it was the principle for me.

Excellent dim sum

By rokkap |

Dim Sum garden proved very popular restaurant, with excellent dim sum. Expedient, Chinese service, too.

Best soup dumplings you'll ever have

By christina p |

There's nowhere else I want to get soup dumplings. Hot, sweet, salty, tender. Magnificent. Great prices. Huge place so even if there's a long line, you're not waiting.

Exceeded expectations - a real treat!

By Jennifer A |

This place was buzzing with traffic when we stopped in for an early lunch on a Monday. Fantastic dim sum and very good regular dishes as well. We enjoyed a couple types of soup dumplings, beef dumplings, red bean cakes, scallion pancakes, pork noodles and spicy fried chicken. Everything was wonderfully prepared and served to share with our group. Service was friendly and efficient. I am not sure if they really only take cash or if our Chinese speaking friend was trying to win at the fight over the check - but our Chinese speaking friend and the waiter told my husband they don't take credit cards and cash only.

Warning- cash only in restaurant.

By Tabitha |

Cash only in restaurant. After I said I’d order online then and take it to go, they said Venmo was accepted. A bit expensive- $16 for shrimp and broccoli- rice is extra. Dumplings were good. Service was poor. We sat down and had to get our own menus. Had to ask for silverware. Got up to ask for bill and a box. She did not check back with except to say we could add tip to venmo and watch and take pictures as I did. Super odd to me. The only person who checked on us was a young man who was refilling water.

Simply delicious!

By SometimesITakeTrip |

We had the soup dumplings, chicken and broccoli, gyoza and some other dishes. It was all very delicious and served promptly. I would definitely return for a meal here. Our child even bought a hoodie😊

5* dumplings. Cleanliness lowers my rating.

By FoodyReviewer |

We ordered a variety of dumplings which were all made with a good filling to skin ratio, authentic taste and cooked very well. Reasonably priced. Convenient location. 5* It is a popular place. Often a line up. The atmosphere lowers my rating. People don’t linger, the seats are hard and it is dark inside, so cleanliness is less questionable, but sticky tables gives it away.

Excellent

By Keira Mason |

Go early before they open to avoid lines! Excellent dim sum. Favorites were the steamed and pan fried soup dumplings. Bubble tea of many varieties. Moon cake with black bean delicious as were steamed spicy shrimp dumplings. Cash only Cant wait to return

Yum!

By Jesslynn2104 |

I kept reading that we had to try the dumplings so we got the fried chive pork dumplings and they were delicious! I got the sliced pork with hot pepper and it was very good. Super flavorful. My friend got general tso’s chicken and loved it. She said it was more on the sweet side so I wouldn’t recommend that dish if you prefer it with more of a kick.

Sadly gone downhill since last visit 2 yrs ago

By CakeIsGood265 |

1st 4 times starting 5 yrs ago were excellent. Recent visit: no line (bad sign), bathrooms were beyond awful, service was between rude & uninterested, and sadly food was blan, poorly prepped & so-so. Sincerely hope they recover before it’s too late.

High expectations-disappointed

By Alfred B |

Got the order wrong. Sticky rice sao mai was dry and cold as if cooked the day before. Overly thick pastry on dumplings. Would not return or recommend.

Good lunch Met friends here

By NittanyLion70 |

Good lunch Met friends here because the restaurant is near the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel. They are vegans and we’re happy with the choices they made. I had the shrimp skewers and fried cheese wontons. My wife enjoyed her soup. As stated in other reviews the line moves fairly quickly. We’ll eat here again during next years flower show.

Extremely disappointed.

By dreamer8313 |

One of the worst things people can do is to assume stuff. Nowhere in the entrance of the restaurant does it say this restaurant is cash only and does not accept debit or credit cards. I even stood up and walked to the main entrance to see if I had missed the "Cash Only" sign when the server brought the check, but there was none. It's 2018, and this restaurant is big and crowded enough to accept CC payments, but they don't. I don't have anything against cash-only places, but they have to let customers know that beforehand. It is very irritating when you have no cash on you or no debit card to get money from the ATM and they look at you as if it's your fault for not having cash on you. This was my first time to this restaurant and it is certainly my last. When I arrived in the restaurant, the server walked me to a table right by the entrance, and I never walked inside the restaurant, so if a cash-only sign is further inside the restaurant, I certainly was not going to see it, as I never ventured past my table. The good experience I had with the food went to waste by their lack of attention and because they assume guests would know this is a cash-only place. On the other hand, their sweet and sour chicken was great, but unfortunately made me sick following the irritating incident. Suggestion to owner/managers: put up a cash-only sign in the entrance of the restaurant and avoid other patrons to get irritated like I did. Thank you.

Dumplings!

By AHRESQ |

Solid dumplings and noodle dishes at this Philly Chinatown stalwart. Friendly service in a spartan (but clean) setting.

Not entirely bad

By Michael J |

When here for a Sunday late lunch early / dinner. The decor doesn’t really give you that “clean” feeling although it’s not branded as an upscale place. The dumplings were good but we had a noodle platter that had a funny taste. We have eaten here before and it was better at that time. I hope it was just an off day and it’s not going downhill.

So much food...so little care

By Elinor B |

The food was great. You get a lot for what you pay for and everything was very nice. However, the atmosphere was overcrowded, dirty, and exclusionary. It felt like we were intruding on the restaurant and that the servers/owners could care less if we were there. I'd find some other place.

Good dim sum restaurant

By franck |

Specialist in dim sum, lots of choices, very good vegetated dim sum, bigger size than in France (x2), choice of other dishes too. Attention: cash only, there is a vending machine in the restaurant in case ...

Worse Chinese restaurant I've visited in my life!

By C L |

I ordered : 1) Fried Fish in wine sauce: too salty 2) Vegetable dumpling (steamed): the skin is excessively THICK; so best to just dig out the scanty veggie filling if you are in for too much skin 3) chicken with cream corn soup: Big bowl but bland the best item on my table was the chinese tea! I really don't understand the long lines here outside the shop though. The place does not take credit cards.

Late lunch on a Sunday

By Chibu U |

Excellent food and service. Very busy place. Had to wait in line for a table for around seven (7) minutes. They had our favorite tea, bo lai. Of course, we had their famous soup dumpling (Xiao Long Bao). We tried their pork with briwn sauce and lo mein noodles. Plus gai lan in garlic sauce and hot and sour soup. Of course, we had other dim sum (shrimp dim sum, fried pork dumpling and steamed pork buns). The bo lai tea did its job - wash down the food. It’s always a wonderful dining experience.

Excellent dim sum especially soup dumplings

By Keira Mason |

This is my favorite dim sum restaurant in Philadelphia. Advise to get there early to avoid the crowd. The soup dumplings are excellent. Everything is fresh. Reasonably priced.

Not good place for Dim Sum

By Benshi R |

The place named "Dim Sum Garden" but they only have bum and dumpling, don't have any other popular Chinese Dim Sum dishes. To who like to eat Dim Sum, go another place "Nom Wah Tea Parlor", just 2 block away. They have all kind of Dim Sum you like.

Just okay

By Wander |

Coming into this I was very much looking forward to trying Dim Sum Garden. When k got my food I was not impressed. It was fine but it really lacked flavor and it wasn’t outstanding enough where I see this as a place to revisit. I’ll go to other dim sum spots before returning here.

Great food in Chinatown

Best dim sum and fair prices. Restaurant is very clean, service is friendly and helpful. This a standout in a crowded field

Our New Favorite Chinese Restaurant in the US

I’ve been to China four times and we love this restaurant. Chose it for dinner two days in a row this week. Will definitely go back!

Great food at a very reasonable price

By Cathy G |

Came here at just before noon on a Saturday and was delighted to be seated without a wait. All dishes for Dim Sum come around on carts so you look and choose. Not always easy to assess exactly what they are but most of the staff were able to say what kind of meat was in them. One of party is gluten free which was a bit of a challenge but a lot of the things are obviously OK. We had a filling meal and it was $25 for two - enjoyed the green tea no other drinks - excellent value. The room was filling up rapidly and starting to build a wait for space

Great Late Dining

By rogersober |

Three kinds of dumplings, a beef brisket hot pot, small won ton soup and hot tea made our late night great.

Flavorful dumplings etc

By Hale F |

Popular, Authentic so you have to ask for a fork if you can’t use chopsticks. We enjoyed the eggplant, spicy sausage and crab dumplings. Dim sum restaurant were folks gather and share. Go with someone with knowledge about dim sum and you will enjoy it more.reasonably priced.

Overwhelmingly ...ordinary

By Meg |

We were looking for a place to get a selection of dumplings (dim sum type) at night, and Dim Sum Garden had great reviews. No steam tables being wheeled around, but instead ordering from a menu, but that was fine for dumplings all day long, and likely more efficient. We had about 10 different dim sum style dishes. And they were OK, just OK. Many were overcooked (couldn't even pick up the shrimp dumplings because the wrappers just fell apart in the steamer basket), dry soup dumplings, very tough skins on dumplings, very dry red bean/sesame pastries. I really thought it would be good, judging from the reviews and pictures. The prices were fair, and you can fill your tummy for a fairly low price, so that's a win. My daughter ordered a strawberry smoothie, and we were a little surprised to see that it was a commercial product that she had to open herself. It was OK, just not what we expected. While we waited in line, near the ATM machine, we found that many people didn't know it was cash only, so that ATM was a busy place! I learned the ATM charge is $1.75. Some people don't like the service, but it's more of a cultural difference. Asking a question of someone whose first language is Chinese is always different. Because Chinese don't indicate a question by raising their voice at the end of a sentence, they often just repeat your question back, but as a statement. I find that saying "this is a question", and then asking my question is an easier way of making myself understood.

Dim Sum Heaven

By kharmudarla |

If you love dim sum this is the place. We drove an hour to get here and it was more than worth he drive. Wide variety of delicious dim sum.

Solid option for local dim sum

By hawknjaguar |

Tried several small dishes. Shrimp and vegetarian dumplings were outstanding. I've had better scallion pancakes. Overall quite good, but not up the standard of top notch dim sum spots in Boston or SF. That said, I'd go back. They're cash only, which is fine, but there's no obvious sign alerting folks that that's the case. They do have an ATM, but a heads up is in order. Service was great, nice atmosphere.

Good Experience

By William S |

Note: the restaurant has moved to 1024 from 1020 and another dim sum restaurant has opened at 1020. The restaurant at 1020 is NOT Dim Sum Garden, though. TripAdvisor rejected my address update but you can find the change on the Dim Sum Garden website. We’ve had a lot of dim sum over the years in Taiwan, Shanghai and Singapore. The dim sum here is decent and good for the USA. I don’t know if you can find better. We tried the chicken soup dumpling, the shrimp dumplings and the vegetarian dumplings along with the cold cucumbers. The soup dumplings were good though they lacked the traditional ginger flavor, the shrimp dumplings were just what you could expect elsewhere with a nice shrimp flavor and the vegetarian dumplings were good though the shell was a bit thick. The cucumbers were cold, just as they should be, and the vinegar was nice. We expected them to be a bit spicy which they were not. The service was great and the new location is sparkly. If you liked the older, funky location you might be disappointed. This new one allows more people to enjoy the Garden’s offerings.

Good food.... but

By seah0rsetraveler |

Pork soup dumplings was a must try. Spicy mapo tofu with noodle was very delicious. Good selection for vegetarian dishes. Shianghai vegetarian duck was a tasty treat. Service was good and the staffs was friendly. Huge downside for me was the condition of the restrooms. It was unkept and gross.

Too Americanized.

By Kenneth O |

No where near a Chinese experience. Hip/hop music in the background vs. Chinese, orders dry & bland and no semblance of a Chinese restaurant. We’ll stick with the originals for our future restaurant choices.

Stone Age

By jbakerrr |

I have never eaten at a place that is cash only and the price I paid for the food was not worth the money. I think because it is in China Town the prices are higher . I ordered the cold noodles with peanut sauce and the kids had the chicken and fries. I don't think I have ever seen my children turn down chicken and fries. Guess there is a first time for everything.

Soup Dumplings

By Diane Z |

Consistently good soup dumplings, fast, somewhat impersonal, service. Decent, minimal decor, moderate cleanliness - average Chinatown ambience. Fair prices, dependable dim sum. Worth returning to regularly for dependable lunch. Cash only.

Lunch as part of a weekend in Philly

By cmau3 |

Spent a weekend in Philly and stopped into Dim Sim Garden for a quick lunch. Soup dumplings were good though most didn’t have much broth. The noodle dishes were tasty. The restaurant was busy for the 1st really hot Saturday May. All and all the food was good. It’s still cash only so don’t forget your wallet!!

Good service; average food

By TeacherEating |

This is an order-off-the-menu dim sum place and not a push cart/choose dish you want type. It's decent for dim sum but nothing spectacular. The soup dumplings were good but Ive had better. The spring rolls were disappointing-- small and all cabbage inside (2 for $4). The shu mai shrimp&pork meat balls were tasty. The flat beef brisket noodles were tasty but we got one big chunk that was mostly fat. The service was prompt and friendly. Not a waste of time but your experience really depends on what you order.

So delicious!

By Chrisdma |

We loved our dinner! We had several dim sum choices and Pork with Sauce Noodle and everything was delicious! We loved our server - she was attentive and very funny! You can't go wrong choosing this restaurant!

bugs in my food

there were bugs in my food i pointed it out to management they tried to tell me it was a fly. They called the police and made me pay for the bug infested food dont eat herer

Great food but terrible service.

By Naia A |

Great food but terrible service. We ordered dim sum, sesame chicken and noodles. Everything very tasty. But the ambiance was very stressful, all servers rushing us, giving us the ticket while eating our meal, collecting our dishes even while chewing the last bite and being told to wait outside for the people who went to the restroom. Just rude.

Dinner in Philadelphia, PA

By Vy H. |

LOVE their soup dumplings especially the Crab & Pork Soup Dumplings!! The Hot & Sour Soup is good too—big portion and well flavored. They only accept cash here, but there is an ATM outside.

Soup dumplings!

By April Z |

Came here with my boyfriend after getting many recommendations for Dim Sum Garden. We ordered 8 things, 4 dumplings from the first page, and shao mai, beef moon cake, spring rolls and chicken on a stick. The dumplings all came out steaming hot and the sauce and vinegar were great. The chicken on a stick was also juicy and it tastes great with the vinegar and the chili oil. We had a long wait to get into the restaurant, approx. 30 min, and the long hallway in the back is cramped to get to the bathroom, but the food is great. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit!

Hole in the wall with Great Dumpling

By Donald S |

Traveled here based on the recommendation of many. It was packed to capacity, but they were moving people in and out fairly efficiently, it took us about 15 mins to navigate the line and get to our seat. It's Cash only, and in an old building, but the food was wonderful. Ate the noodles, spring rolls, and dumplings. The dumplings were made to order hot and tasty, highly recommend them. The noodles were good as well, a bit overly salty but still great! The spring rolls were just okay. I read the previous reviews and stayed away from the general food, but you can't go wrong with the dumplings or noodles! I did get a lot of juice on my shirt, so don't wear a white dress shirt.

Go for the food not the decor

By ChefFred |

If you're the type of person that the decor is just as important as the food-- than this place is not for you. No reservations, long line, hard seats, loud room, and hard to understand waitstaff leaves some people looking for a different place to dine. Me, I go for the food. Nice assortment of Dim Sum, basic collection of basic chinese but the flavor is excellent. Some of the best soup dumplings I've had, really great broth and excellent pork filling.

Shanghai soup dumplings and more

We have never gone wrong in this choice. The food is always prepared perfectly with no surprises. Service is what you would expect in a Dim Sum restaurant.

Absolutely good

By Filippo R |

Very good place where to spend a dinner. Good food, quick service, right prices and beautiful people. I'll come back once in the area again.

best chinese restaurant in Philadelphia Chinatown

By pcmaxim |

At a time when restaurants nearby did not have a single visitor, at Dim Sum Garden we had to wait about 10 minutes for the table to free up. A lot of visitors - the Chinese. This suggests that local residents trust this restaurant. The restaurant is located in the Chinatown area. Large selection of soups and main dishes. Many varieties of Chinese beer in the bottle. The portions are large. Open kitchen. A little dirty toilets, otherwise everything is fine.

Best dumplings ever.

By Cassandra |

I haven’t had soup dumplings since I lived in California 10 years ago, until finding this place. And they are amazing. We ordered a few other items here too and everything was delicious. I only wish we lived closer because now I’ve been craving them ever since. Definitely not stroller friendly though, the place is small and tight. We ordered take out and brought it back to our hotel.

Best Shrimp Dumplings

By allisonj3 |

Great for Dim Sum. We loved the soup dumplings, the pork buns and the shrimp dumplings were out of this world. The best I have ever had. The hot tea was also extra good. The service was very good, the price was very reasonable and the bathrooms easy to get to. Would definitely go back if in the area again.

Amazing

Amazing food - tucked away in china town well worth a visit the service was quick, food truly amazing. Would definitely try Dim sum in soup.

Love Dim Sum

By ARTownsend |

We visited Dim Sum Garden with friends on a pleasant afternoon in October. The variety and quality of the dishes was amazing. The Soup Dumplings were especially yummy.

Very good

By ariacas |

We liked chiken and beef dim sums, spicy beef with bean noodle. They take only cash, but they have atm.

Unsanitary practices

By Jerseygirlz4 |

I want to start by saying the food was delicious. From the soup dumplings to scallion pancakes to the garlic chicken dish. We were lucky to arrive as they opened on a Sunday morning before the large crowds and long line took over. We were a party of four and were seated in a room at the very back of the restaurant, next to the storage refrigerator. I didn’t realize this until I was asked to move into another seat so they could cart items to and from that storage room. During this time a set of chopsticks was on the floor near me and the staff member picked it up and put it next to my plate! Ewww! I was appalled. I began to lose my appetite very quickly. I had asked for tea and our server said to wait because it wasn’t ready to be served as “the crowd rushed to get inside”. What does that mean? You didn’t have hot water ready moments before opening the establishment? I noticed on my way out of the restaurant the service bar where to food is ready to be picked up by the servers is right in the path of people coming and going through the restaurant. Again, ewww. Imagine all the hair and particles landing on the food let alone someone sneezing or coughing as they walked by. I can’t possibly eat here again. Maybe I’ll stick to their takeout only.

Very average. Not worth the effort of going to Chinatown for this place

By gec101 |

We've been here twice now a few years apart. The food is average. We tried several different dumpling dishes. The Xiao long bao was the best out of them, but the skin is still too thick. We tried the glutinous rice dumpling and it was not good at all. No pork that I could see or taste really. The others were not memorable at all. We should have known... as an Asian, if we go into an Asian restaurant and see few or no asians eating there its a red flag.

The General Tso’s only gets better with time

By Laura W |

Just want to let you know off the bat I hade take out, did not eat in (which is why I gave it 4 starts, I cannot judge ambiance, service, etc.). I ordered the Pork soup dumplings and the general Tso’s chicken. The dumplings were excellent (get the dumpling sauce and/or vinegar sauce with them), lots of broth. The General Tso’s was good not great. HOWEVER, I had the leftovers the next day, for lunch and dinner, and it was great - it definitely got better with time. Normally, 2nd day GT’s is either soggy or tastes really fried, and this was not at all, I think belcause there wasn’t a lot of breading on the chicken. Would definitely order again, and would try eating in next time.

Must hit dim sum

By Hawk |

Incredible dim sum! The vegetable dumplings are a standout, but everything was solid. Atmosphere inside is very nice too!

Great food and great service even though so crowded- fried rice so good and not greasy- dumplings amazing and noodles too!

Disappointed

By MommaMarps |

My husband and I visited Dim Sum Garden on the recommendation of a friend before our visit to the Chinese Lantern exhibit. There is a wait but we decided to eat at the counter. Once seated service is quick and orders come rapidly. I love dim sum and was eager to try many from the extensive. One of my favorite items is steamed shu mai. We were very disappointed in them. They were quite tasteless and had to look at the picture in the menu to determine what they were. The soup dumplings were the best of our choices and quite tasty. My husband ordered the general tso's chicken. It was prepared well and crispy and tasty but the sauce was red and tasted more like sweet and sour than spicy like we expect general tso to be. The shrimp dim sum were also tasty and peppery. On the whole, we were very disappointed and would not return.

Going down hill

We've loved this place but the last visit made it extremely hard to ever go back. For one the place is dirty. The walls need cleaning, the ceiling ventilation needs dusting, the floors were not only dirty but sticky. And the restrooms were a mess. As for the soup dumplings which they are mostly known for were missing the flavor we remember. Our party agreed it was a ginger flavor that was lacking.so I'm not sure if they changed the recipe. It was a Sunday and the places was extremely crowded but the wait was quick and the service was good otherwise I would have given them a one star.

Delicious

This place is great. The menu offers so many variations of dumplings that it is difficult to make a choice. We tried 5 different sort which were all delicious The noodle dishes are always a great alternatives for those not fond of dumplings. Our kids loved their dishes

Best Chinese food

My family & I enjoyed Dim Sum so much that we came back the next day to try different dishes. It is one of the best Chinese food I have eaten.

Rated No. 1 for a reason

By criticalinva |

This was our third meal at Dim Sum Garden. Arriving at 7:30, the line (always an indication of good food) was daunting. We debated whether to leave after the host estimated a 30–minute wait. Given the number of people in line, we estimated an hour. It turned out to be a 15-minute wait (see comment about kitchen and service below!). Ordered soup dumplings, Ma Po tofu, duck noodles, spicy cold tripe and scallion pancakes. Sat near the kitchen, where a veritable army prepares the food. Served piping hot and with lightning speed! The best meal we have had there to date served by an efficient and friendly staff. Love this place!

Fun Place and Good Food

I went here with my brother. It's a fun place to go and deserves the high rating. My favorite is the Steam Pork Soup Dumpling! Ask the server how to eat it!. You have to drink out the soup, before eating the dumpling. I like the energy here a lot. Also, good place if you like sharing. Fun place to get a beer and eat some dumplings!

good place for dumplings

If you enjoy dumplings, this is the place. Fried, steamed, whatever, you cannot go wrong. Try the soup dumplings.

Great dumplings, decent price

The mabo dofu was ok. Could use some more flavor. The shrimp dumplings were good too. Serivice was good.

Poor Customer Service

By Jennifer H |

I would give this establishment less than one star if that was possible for customer service and interaction. Made an order online incorrectly, which I acknowledge fault in. However, when I called to explain/discuss, the employee answering the phone was rude and hung up on me, abruptly ending the conversation. To add to my ire, they called me back after they HUNG UP ON ME, just to scream at me vs. having a respectable conversation about the situation. I never picked up my food from my order - in the future, I never plan to come to this establishment again or even order online. Go to Tom's Dim Sum where the food is better and where you're treated with respect.

High Review given by others does not match our visit

TripAdvisor reviews usually are correct but we were underwhelmed by our lunch. None of the dishes were special and the prices were high. Pork buns were chewy and not tasty. Young chow rice was tasteless. As a final complaint they brought the check in an American Express Card folder. When they came to take my card they said “cash only”. I paid with cash but when we left I could not any sign noting “cash only”. I should have noted an ATM In their small entrance. Also change came back in same Amex folders but receipt was not there, just the change.

First time trying dim sum...very delicious!! Pork, shrimp, chicken, so many to choose from. Wonton soup was great as well. Place only accepts cash though, so be prepared.

A must for visiting

We come here every time we go to Philadelphia. It is a must for our culinary tourism. Order the soup dumplings, then choose from a wide variety of menu items. We love the dumplings and noodle-based dishes the best. Our 4 and 6 year old kids love the noodles and pumpkin dumplings (donuts). You get a lot of food for the price. They only take cash, no credit cards.

A Good Choice for Us

By Jolevthal45@gmail.com |

Yes, I know the lines were long when we were there. However, that shouldn't detract from the overall experience of this place. For visitors from out of town, Dim Sum Garden was a real find. We prefer Dim Sum served from carts, however, the overall range of the selections was excellent. Served fresh & hot our choices were far above the average fare that we can get close to home. With the exception of N.Y.C. Chinatown, Dim Sum Garden can compare with any of them. This was a real treat for us.

great food, really fast

I had the pork soup dumplings which were great. Coconut bobo tea was excellent. Restaurant is very busy, somewhat loud. Very efficient and fast.

It isn’t worth to go. Not good as years age.

We asked a famous Shanghai dish which was called “两面黄”(Crispy noodles with pork). It was nothing like what it should be. It looks like they do not know how to cook this dish. Other dishes were not good as years ago.

Not to bad.

Dim Sum Garden’s food was pretty good, I really didn't have any complaints when it came to that. But my only problem was the wait staff. The two that I had to deal with were grumpy and didn't seem to want to be working. It kinda ruined my mood while I was there, and made it pretty tough to enjoy my meal with my girlfriend.

Xiao Long Bao!!!

After I found this restaurant on Yelp, I was figuring out when I could visit. I made up my mind to go the next day. Even though parking in a deck costed $31, it was well worth it. I ordered the regular XLB and the spicy pork XLB.. I was SOOOOO happy eating this meal. The restaurant was absolutely packed on a Sunday 3P. Be ready to wait. You gotta eat here!!

Great food at a reasonable price

By JIm-from-central-NJ |

We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was busy but our wait wasn't long. We ordered several items, soup dumplings (delicious but piping hot so beware, pan fried beef potato cakes (crisp outside tender inside), shrimp on a stick (very crisp), shrimp dumplings (paper thin skin around a tasty filling) and a few others. The wait staff was friendly and the food came out of the kitchen quickly. The prices very very reasonable, we will make a trip to Philly again very soon just to come back to this restaurant.

Soup Dumplings are the new comfort food

By Melodie D |

I never had soup dumplings until I visited Dim Sum Garden. The soup dumplings are the perfect winter comfort food. The broth is delicious along with the filling. Just be careful because they can be messy.

Best dim sum!

Dim Sum Garden never disappoints! The prices are amazing and the food is always fresh. Every time I travel to Philly my family and I eat here

Best Soup Dumplings I've ever had

By Kesh |

I had heard a lot about dim sum garden over the years and decided to finally give it a try. We entered to find a huge line with the wait being about 35 minutes. The food though made it well worth it. We ordered the scallion pancakes and pork soup dumplings and they were phenomenal. The dim sum is made by hand in the back far different from the frozen ones found in most Chinese restaurants. The food is also very affordable making it great for dining on a budget.
