My bestie and I have a subscription to the theatre so on those nights, we opt for breakfast for dinner at the Dining Car. Our go to always is the cream cheese omelet. The eggs are mixed with chives and chunks of bacon, the cream cheese is ooey- gooey and yummy and topped with sliced tomatoes. We opt for the side of crispy potato pancakes and share a toasted corn muffin. We told our waitress we needed to get into the city and we honestly had our meal in minutes.

Wonderful and delicious experience in a classic American diner in North Philly. Loved the chipped beef on toast, cinnamon roll, Jewish apple pie and lemon meringue pie. Jean gave us super service. Could be a bit more kept up, but glad a great place like this still serves travelers like me.

From morning breakfast to drunken 2 am fourth meals, I have been going to "Car" for a very long time. Unfortunately no more. While the service has not changed, the food has plummeted in quality and size while the prices have gone up. From very small omelets to under cooked hash browns, it's just not worth your money or time to eat here.

People have been coming here for ages and the food has changed since I started coming in the 70's. it is not consistent and often lacks flavor . I would say they are okay but nothing special and their menu is not as big as some other places.

The goulash soup was The Best! We really enjoyed that. My hubby ordered chicken croquettes, which came on a bed of smashed potatoes and gravy. He was disappointed - no flavor to the croquettes and not enough gravy for him. He also got a side of pineapple fritters that were delicious. I ordered a breakfast that included scrapple, since I had not tasted it before. It was ok - sort of like spam I think - and the more you eat the less enjoyable it seems to be. The bread basket included some nice warm buns and a cinnamon-roll type of bread that was really tasty. The server we had was so very nice, and took time to chat with us for a bit. I would go back and try other dishes. It's true that they don't take credit cards, but the notice was clearly posted on the door as you entered, so we were prepared for that.

This is on very busy neighborhood diner. Very good breakfast, large menu and very large portions. Don't let the line fool, the place is large and you get seated very quickly. Very friendly staff. They don't take credit cards.

This is a typical diner, but we came with high expectations since it was featured on Guy Fieri's show. Huge menu, mediocre (angry) waitress and they don't accept credit or debit cards. The featured item was boring , and the vegetables came freshly warmed up from the microwave. Only redeeming fact was that they split a milkshake for our two kids . We have had far bett meals for far less money at many other places

We saw our waitress only twice...when she took our order and when we got our check. That in itself isn't that bad but our food was so cold the butter just sat on my waffle ...never did melt. We would have said something..but as I stated..she was MIA through our meal. Poor service and sub par food.

Every time I return to Philadelphia I stop by the dining car with my wife and Mom for breakfast. It's always packed and we are never disappointed. Breakfast was wonderful. Portions are big and we love the cream chipped beef. My omelette was made to perfection. Really a good value and well worth the wait. Give it a try when in the area. YUM!

We went to try the Dining Car and Market for diner during our travel to Philly. I had seen this place on DDD. I can say we were not disappointed. Very good atmosphere. We both had the Chicken Croquettes that we seen on DDD. They were very good. Everything else that came with the meal was good also. We walked out with very full stomachs. Keep in mind CASH ONLY.

we visited here because if Diners Drive-ins and Dives....had great food and an awesome atmosphere. Just what the show described...good service..easy to get too....

Had lunch with a large group. Seated upon entering, friendly and attentive staff. Standard Diner menu. Overall good experience.

I live right across the street from the dining car and I've only been there twice. It's a perfect place to eat after you come from partying lol. Their pancakes were great!

This is the worst place in Philly that I have ate, the food was cold, and the service was the worst in my 61 yrs living, the militar has beter food than this place. Everybody stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the dining car in Philadelphia on Wednesday at 12 noon. My husband and I both ordered breakfast, my father got lunch. My ham and cheese omelet was excellent! Potatoes came with fried onions, which I like. My dad asked about the hamburger, whether it was a frozen patty or fresh ground meat. He received a fresh made-to-order hamburger, so he was happy. As for service, we were seated almost immediately. Waitress was pleasant and attentive, frequently checking on us to ensure drinks were filled and food was good. Great experience! One of my favorite breakfast spots in Northeast Philly!!

You can't go wrong here! Service is amazing, portions are large and the food is fresh and delish! BTW, coffee is always fresh and great. I do suggest the cream chipped beef w/home fries and onions YUM!! They cooked the scrapple just perfect for me and had no problem with doing it at my request. I like it thin and crispy.

I really wanted corned beef hash. The Dining Car has the best corned beef hash I've found in the area. Unfortunatley, they didn't have it this morning. So I ordered French toast and bacon. The bacon was deep fried, it was too uniformly crisp to be cooked on the grill. I really dislike deep fried bacon. The French toast was soggy in the middle. The worst part of the meal though was the three twenty-something men in the booth behind me. It seemed like every third word out of their mouths was F***ing. They were complaining that the waitress was inattentive. I wanted to turn around and tell them she probably didn't want to approach their table and listen to them cursing. I know their behavior is not the fault of the Dining Car but it just dragged down a meal that wasn't great.

Good place to have a family meal. Food and portions are good. Desserts are homemade and excellent. Either save room for dessert or take some home. Only thing to note it is cash only.

Went around 9 expecting to have to wait. Seated quickly. Ordered pie and coffee. The chocolate pie was delicious and the coffee was fresh! My friend ordered the french bread pizza with fresh tomato sauce.

Waited almost a hour on a random Friday at 11am to receive our food. Almost like the whole kitchen went on break at the same time. Also not too many larger tables so if you are more than 4, expect to wait. Waitress was good as was food. Cash only.

We stopped at The Dining Car for breakfast one morning. I ordered a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich and my husband ordered a Western omelet. I specifically requested that my sandwich be on a toasted English muffin with a little bit of butter. I could not get just the sandwich, it had to come with home fries. When the breakfast was finally delivered, what a disaster. My sandwich had pork roll that was not even browned (probably microwaved), maybe one egg, lots of cheese on a untoasted muffin with no butter. The home fries might as well be plain boiled potatoes, no flavor or additional taste. My husband said the omelet was okay, but his potatoes, which he requested with onions, came the same as mine with a bunch of fried onions just thrown on top. As we were in a hurry, we did not have time to send the orders back. We ate and left. The service was good, not exceptional. The diner was crowded, but it is the only diner in the area and seems to have a large following of senior citizens. I will not go back! Also, so you know, they do not take any credit or debit cards. On another note, their bakery is very good. They just can't make a decent breakfast.

We went to the Dining Car Diner on Frankford Ave, Philadelphia on the recommendation of several friends and because its website had great menu and prices, just what we wanted. And it Philadelphia, several figured there would be great Philly Cheesesteaks. Things started well, I phoned ahead to tell them there were 8 of us for lunch just after noon on Wednesday 4/22 and an hour later they were ready for us perfectly. Now, I am used to waitresses asking questions or explaining what came with a dish or how it is prepared and presented. And some of this was mine and others fault, too. I returned to the table to hear a discussion between the waitress and a couple with us concerning separate checks and assume the others had all settled the situation with her, too. But that was not the case. I ordered the roast beef sandwich served on rye bread with pickle slice as stated on the menu. I failed to ask for mayo, or butter, or tomato or anything else. The meat was pretty lean and medium rare...and I was hungry and bit into the sandwich when I realize how dry it was...I removed some lettuce, and continued to eat as I am a slow eater and was last served...so I had to rush on. Several of the others at that point also commented on how the food was not up to what they expected. Soon the checks came. Two checks. I looked at the one which showed everybody's food, including the order for the two who had asked for separate check. Their order was also subtracted somewhere near where my order was listed at a price over a dollar above the menu price. We finally got the attention of waitress who took the check to get it corrected. It took almost 10 minutes for her to return and we were getting late for our next move. We got the check and it was scribbled on to make a change in my order price. But there was still "8 sodas: $9:25" which no one could verify, etc. So we decided to go to the cash register and pay individually which didn't work out as the girl at the register asked that we pay the total and work out the details amongst ourselves. So I got money from everyone, gave her what she wanted and left. I didn't go back to the table to leave a tip and don't know if anyone else did as no one knew how much they owed nor what the tip should have been. Our talk of dining for the rest of the day was not complimentary to the Dining Car Diner. We realize we all should have asked for separate checks right at the beginning despite that most restaurants today would rather a group a large as ours just do one check and they would help us sort it out at the register with no problem. We also realized that we all should have asked more questions of our waitress instead of having her just write things down. The lesson is to talk to and with your waitress, especially if she doesn't seem to talk to you.

I live very close to the Dining Car and since I've lived in Philly 9 years, I have watched the quality take a bit of a dive while prices went up a lot. The bakery is still awesome, but it is as if after the restaurant was featured on Diners Driveins and Dives, they jacked up the prices and the quality went down. Not terrible, though, and many still love it.

We visited here because of the Food Network show hosted by Guy Fieri. The location was as you would expect a classic diner. The foot was plentiful and definitely value for money. Each main comes with a soup and a basket of bread, which included cinnamon rolls!!!! Who eats cinnamon rolls with clam chowder? I ate the chicken croquettes and was not disappointed, held in place with a dollop of mash potato and smothered in a rich white gravy. My wife struggles through the shrimp stir fry which she said was over salted. My main concern about this restaurant was that we were sat overlooking the front door. The staff appeared to be on a smoking rota, as soon as one had finished the next was stood outside in the same place. I was impressed though that each one used hand sanitizer before they went back in.

The Dinning Car is a splendid restaurant with a good variety of food the and the food has great flavor. The service is friendly and the food gets out to you in a good amount of time. The waits don't usually take too long. I would recommend the French Dip or the patty melt. The Dining car never disappoints and is a great diner. I will be coming back and I would recommend if your in Philly GO TO THE DINING CAR.

My ex an I used to he here a lot. You legitimately cannot believe how unbelievably delicious and affordable this place is.

The Dining Car Diner has THE best chicken croquettes. Who would think chicken croquettes could even be good? They are delicious!! Their homemade sides, including califlower augratin and mac and cheese are excellent also. They have a huge bakery on the premises, and their walnut apple pie is absolutely wonderful. The prices are great, the staff is always friendly, and the atmosphere is very nice. It is very clean and has an "old diner" aura, but has been remodeled. They don't take credit cards, but they do have an ATM machine. They are open 24 hours, so that is a big plus also. It is a must try.

Thursday evening dinner was just so so.Wife ordered her favorite which was the famed Chicken croquettes. They appeared much smaller& tasted nothing like past experiences at the Dining Car. I ordered meatloaf which was pretty bad. more loaf than meat! Potatoes tasted like they were instant taters.the service was good and place appeared clean.

I haven't lived in Philly for over 20 years, so when a classmate from high school suggested meeting at the Dining Car, I was thrilled. This place was one of my grandma's favorites. I was just ready for scrapple didn't care about anything else. As always, the food was great diner fare. I was back in Philly girl heaven.

I love the Dining Car and it is definitely my favorite diner! Not only is the food great, but its also not very expensive. I've been to Dining Car countless times and mention it to my best friend all the time. Finally, I got the opportunity to take her there to try my favorite platter the devil crab and she thought it was amazing! Anyone who likes seafood, should definitely go and order the devil crab. There other platters are also great and you definitely get enough food to feel stuffed.

Not impressed with this landmark restaurant, We came here Mother's Day because we didn't think it would be crowded. I really did not think people would take their mom's to a diner on this special day. We also came here because of Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. Burger and sweet potato fries were just ok. Fries came with Kraft honey mustard sauce. Really? The turkey club was average, fries were under cooked. Nothing special at all about the food or the interior. The service was ok but they were completely understaffed with servers and kitchen staff. Servers taking care of large areas by themselves, running around practically having meltdowns. Food was slow to come out for everyone.

Excellent food. Good wait staff. Good neighborhood dinner. Easy to find. Not far from I-95. And shopping centers

Great diner - can lunch for less than $9.00 - grilled cheese and French fries - very good - great service too - “old time “ diner - cash only!

A nice gentleman said good morning & held the door for me & the Mrs. Found out he is one of the new owners. They gave us 10% on our delicious breakfast and the two items from thier bakery. Take my 3 grandchildren there and they like the food. Best in class Jewish apple pie. Know it's difficult for small businesses nowadays but hope they are very successful.

After work my wife and I went there on a Saturday morning. We arrived there about 7:30a. Not crowded. It really picks up after 8a. The waitress was very attentive. We were well supplied with coffee and H2O. I had the basics. Egg, bacon and potato’s. I asked for fried onions in the potatoes. No problem or charge. I appreciated not being nickel and dimed like a suburban diner would do. Bacon was cooked good (and nicely sized. Eggs the way I asked. Oh, after the waitress asked the type of toast I wanted, she followed up if I wanted jelly. I sure did, I was a happy camper. My wife ate a tad healthier then me. She had oatmeal with walnuts (other toppings abounded). Our meal was very good. We stopped by their bakery on the way out. We purchased the sugar free Jewish apple bread and some muffins. The were excellent. My daughter has been their for dinner. She loves it. That is high praise from a 21 year old food perfectionist. Other friends and family frequent their and recommend it. Oh, the bathrooms are clean and the establishment is well maintained.

Food was OK. Nothing special. Remember that this place is cash only. The service could have been a little better but was acceptable. Everything we ordered came out hot and was cooked properly. We were going to get takeout from the bakery but it was a bit over priced and they didn't have what we really wanted.

Food was cold. I had the Chicken croquettes, mashed potatoes and corn. Hubby had Hot turkey , mashed potatoes and green beans. Not good at all. I'm fact disgusting. Everything was so cold. Even the soup. Would of sent it back to networked up but we were starving. And from being in the restaurant business I know what they do to the food.

Our friends visited and we had breakfast at Dining Car. I proceeded to register to pay bill for 6 people. Cash only, no credit cards accepted (in large print) should be on all the entrance doors; so customers can view before entering; and put this notice in their advertising). A small notice is near the register (too late!) Cashier told me to go to ATM outside of entrance. This is not acceptable. I did not carry enough cash and had to borrow from my visiting friend to pay the bill. Embarrasing. Why cash only? Unheard of! Suggestion: Accept credit cards and offer 5% discounts for cash. On the brighter side..... Newly renovated; gives clean and attractive atmosphere. Service is and was always excellent. Food is average. Today they had refrigeration problems. Lettuce was warm and wilted, dressing was warm. Should have been mentioned when cold foods were ordered. Hash browns were not available with breakfast today. Potato cakes were offered as a substitute. o.k. Hopefully Dining Car cash policy will change and their refrigeration system repaired soon. I may try again in a month or so.

Stopped in after a long day hoping for some good classic diner food. The look was that of a classic diner but that was as close as it got. The service was ok but she was not at all enthusiastic. Once we order, three sandwich platters, we waited for some time. The food was bland and their "famous cole slaw" was weak. My Reuben was tasteless and the corned beef was of poor quality. So sad as I like diners and diner food.

I saw this diner on a travel show I watched recently and stopped by to give it a try. No credit cards are accepted here. There's an ATM in the vestibule that charges a $2 terminal fee. After sitting down at one of the booths, it took a while before I decided on what to get here. They serve beer, wine, mixed drinks, sodas, coffee, juice, all kinds of drinks. I settled for water (FREE). As an appetizer, we shared an order of Whole Fried Mushrooms ($5.50). They came breaded on toothpicks with a dish of horseradish mayonnaise dipping sauce. This was a wrong choice as neither one of us thought they were any good. After asking our server what a chicken croquette was and what chef Larry's famous soup was, neither sounded appealing after her explanation so I ordered what I thought to be a safe bet, a Corned Beef Special Half Sandwich ($6.70). The sandwich was on rye bread (by choice), not toasted, had only a small portion of beef, some thousand island dressing, and cole slaw inside. The sides that I got to choose from were cole slaw (again?), apple sauce (am i a 5th grader?), or mini fruit. I chose the mini fruit which consisted of a small cup of cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapples, and grapes, about 2 each. What a sad and pathetic value. I can make a much better corned beef sandwich at home. It should have came toasted. For only like $1 more you can get a whole Corned Beef Special sandwich and a pickle. I'm not sure how twice the amount of sandwich can only cost $1 more but that's what they charge here. I wonder what they did with the other half of my sandwich that I didn't order? I should of went down the street to the Famous 4th Street Jewish Deli where they don't skimp on the beef like they do here. The whole reason I went with the half sandwich was to leave room for dessert. I got the "famous" Apple Walnut Pie ($3.75) a la mode (extra $2.15). I asked for the pie to be heated. I'm not going to lie, this was some seriously good pie. I definitely made the right decision here to get it heated and throw some ice cream on top. This was a big improvement over the poor tasting and valued appetizer and entree dishes. Mon - Wed, store hours are 7AM - 10PM. We got there at 8:50PM and there was hardly any other customers dining besides us. Our service was disappointingly slow with uncomfortable waiting for our server to take our orders and for food to be served to us. There's no way a party of 2 should take 1 hour, 20 minutes to have dinner on a slow Wednesday night at a diner. Don't go out of your way like we did. It was all a rather sleepy experience quick to be forgotten.

My wife and I visited the Dining Car over the weekend. The service was good, and the food was okay. The only downside was that they don't accept cards, so make sure you have cash.

My family and friends have been coming to The Dining Car for years. Their breakfast items are never disappointing. Best french onion soup on the planet! Desserts are made on the premises daily. My only gripe is their "cash only" policy and lack of ranch dressing.

My cousin and I decided to have lunch here this afternoon. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed what we ate. After reading some of the other reviews I have to say I enjoyed the chicken croquettes that I ordered. My cousin had the pork parmigiana that she said was delicious. I was given a choice of what kind of roll and I chose the cinnamon roll that was excellent. The mashed potatoes were homemade and very good. The chicken soup was a bit over salted but okay. Our waitress Mena was very nice and kept asking us if we needed anything else. After reading the other negative reviews I have to say our lunch here was very positive and we will come back here again.

Of course, we saw this diner in my DDD book. We picked up family a PHL airport and were heading North towards the Catskills Mtns in NY. I had done some research and determined that this place was 'on the way' so we decided to stop by. We ate duing lunchtime on a Friday and had 4 people in our party. The place was PACKED. Just a general observation was that there was alot of senior citizens there. We got seated within 10 minutes of arriving and placed our orders. I mentioned to the waitress that I had brought my book and would like to get it signed. She sent one of the owners over. She chatted with us and signed my book. We ordered: French Onion Soup - Excellent Hamburger - Good Philly Cheese Steak - Good Train Wreck (which was on their blackboard specials). It had a TON of meat and was a really odd combination of ingredients - but my husband enjoyed it. Famous Chicken Croquettes - okay. The mashed potatoes and gravy served with them was really good. I found the Croquettes lacking taste. The food portion was HUGE - especially for lunch. For example: My Chicken Croquettes came with mashed potatoes , gravy, french fries and a cinnamon roll. Way more that I could eat. The restaurant was very clean and well kept. Had plenty of parking in the back. They still do not accept credit but have sign's posted on the door so that customers are aware before they enter. Overall, it was a pretty good place, I just wish the Croquettes would have had more flavor.

The food and service were terrible. Waited over 1/2 hr to eat the waitress was nasty needless to say she got a lousy tip. And this is supposed to be the city of brotherly love what a crock of bull. Do not eat at this place

After a fun day at the Philadelphia Zoo, we decided to have dinner at "The Dining Car". It was our first visit and turned out ot be a great choice. We arrived around 5PM as the mid-week dinner crowd was just coming in. We were seated quickly in a nice booth and our friendly and attentive waitress took good care of us. We had a nice bread basket with home baked rolls and cinnamon bread and butter. My wife started with an excellent glass of white zin, very reasonably priced. We both had a cup of the soup of the day (2), cream of potato and beef pastini. I ordered their famous chicken croquettes and my wife had the blue plate special for the day, baked manicotti. They arrived steaming hot after we enjoyed our soup and bread. I haven't had chicken croquettes that good since I was kid and my Mom used to make them! They were served atop mashed potatoes and gravy. I also had sides of brocolli with cream sauce and corn bread stuffing. The waitress also brought me an extra bowl of gravy which came in hany for the stuffing! The brocolli was just right, not over cooked like a lot of places and the stuffing was excellent, not overspiced, you could actually tase the cornbread and the celery in it! The baked Manicotti was equally excellent, unusual to get good Italian in a diner. We finished our feast with excellent decaf coffee and a slice of Jewish Apple Cake and a dish of chocolate chip mint ice cream sundae. We cleaned our plates and left stuffed and happy! The total bill was a very reasonable $31

Food was great but this has got to be the first diner I have ever been to that doesn't take CC. I am on an expense account and must charge on my companies card so I won't be back.

I grew up coming here with my grandmother. Even when she moved I still frequent this place with my wife. All the food is good and the specials are normally the right move. Sundays you can get their butter cake. Dinner service gives you sweet rolls and coffee is strong and bottomless. This place is normally packed and takes cash only. Try the potato pancakes when doing breakfast, they're on point.

Mediocre food...deviled crab was not even a little bit devilish or delicious...tasted like tuna fish...and for the price (over $13) is was a small portion with canned vegs...service hit or miss...carrot cake was stale...nothing about carrots in it except a carrot on the overly sweet and terrible icing...soup was cold...Skip this place!!

Had a late breakfast here over the weekend. We waited about 20 - 30 minutes for a table but it was worth it. I had an excellent cheese omelet with pork roll and hash browns. The only knock I have is on the hash browns - too much onion and they were only luke warm. Oh, they don't accept credit cards but there is an ATM conveniently located in the lobby.

Drove from DC to this place and we were not disappointed! The long drive was well worth it! I had the chicken croquettes and my husband had the apple salad! We dug in before I remembered to take a picture but the taste, texture, dressing, everything was just right! Highly recommend a visit even if you have to take a long drive ! Taking home some pies😀

I took my niece there in the Fall and was surprised how little they had on the menu. The food is barely average tasting. Years ago they were good. I think they're coasting on their reputation. I had a turkey dinner and it was like a tv dinner. My niece had a burger, not much you can mess up there.

Overall, we were extremely disappointed with the food. Pork cutlet was all bread; small amount of pork was substandard. Could taste no fish in the fish cakes. Starch, starch and more starch.

Great breakfast food..... $$$$ the prices are more then you would expect .... I still go here even though the prices are higher cause I love breakfast for dinner.... And they don't take credit cards fyi

Kind of disappointed with this property. It's a diner, with diner food. I was talked into trying this location because of the "bar". While it does serve alcohol don't be swayed by their website, the drinks were below par. Another aspect that's a negative is the fact that they don't take credit cards, cash only. Will not return in the future.

If you want a great diner experience, this is it. Service is quick, friendly, and helpful. Erin was amazing (20+ years experience shows). The food is all that a diner meal should be. Stuffed French toast was decadent and the French onion soup is as good as any out there. Worth the drive!

A welcoming feel when you walk in...like you have always gone there. Great staff, courteous, attentive. We went for breakfast. Terrific and fast service too. And I cannot forget the market and bakery. Some great sweets.

Just wanted to point out the fact most reviews are OLD, before new ownership. Hope they are given a chance & people don’t go off ‘old news’… When I was there I had the chicken croquettes with mashed potato’s & gravy, which was HOT & DELICIOUS, can’t wait to try them again under the new management! GOOD LUCK to the new owners! 😉

We found the Dining Car through Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. So happy we went here. It is a large, bright diner with good food and happy employees. They also have an onsite bakery. All three of us had the cream chipped beef with a side of scrapple. Large portions and tasted great! Our waitress, Mena, was so friendly which added to our pleasant dining experience. Our daughter went to the restroom just before we were leaving. Mena came over and said to wait a minute. When our daughter came back from the restroom, Mena and two recruits came to our table with a candle lit cupcake and sang happy birthday to her. We thought that was so nice of her to do that. Overall great experience. We will definitely go back.

Dinners are a staple in the Delaware Valley. The Dining Car is an instistution in the Great Northeat of Philly. The outstanding feature of the car is the bakery. It provides sugar free bake goods! The service is excellent. Friendly and like family. The food quality is good and plentiful. The prices are reasonable. With it being open 24/7 it is the go to for locals after a sift all game or boweling night.

My wife and I visit The Dining Car once or twice a month, sometimes for breakfast sometimes for dinner. Their breakfasts are always very good and for dinner we both love their pork and German style sauerkraut.

Note: Cash ONLY! They do not accept credit cards. I had the special, Jewish apple cake french toast, super yummy,no syrup needed. It was like having desert for breakfast. My hubby had the creamed chipped beef, which he enjoyed, good amount of beef and big pieces. We found the prices to be reasonable and the service was friendly and prompt. I would recommend if you are in the area but I would not go out of my way.

I made a visit to the Dining Car this morning to try out their breakfast. I had heard that the place was shown in an episode on that known network that I won't mention. Upon arriving I was expecting a huge morning crowd for some reason but I almost was the only one there. I was greeted with very friendly staff and seated right away. My order was taken very quickly and quite cheerily. It's really just like the stereo typical diner that they portray on TV. As I waited for my food, more and more regulars came in and you could see the playful interaction between them and staff. Just like family. It's a fun environment. My breakfast came quickly and the eggs, bacon, fries, and toast were very good. I took out a piece of their trademark Jewish Apple Cake to bring home to my wife. It was excellent. If you are in the area, definitely give the Dining Car a try. Remember, they don't accept credit cards.

Would never ever eat hear again. Couldnt be paid enough to risk my health here. Had the chicken nasty croquettes. Ugh. Got sick. Dining car is NASTY!!!

It was just really really late on a weeknight and absolutely nothing was open late in Center City. After searching late-night or 24 hours I found The Dining Car. I mean, I love diners and I sadly didn't have the breakfast here as I think I would have been more pleased. I will point out a few highs: extensive menu, plenty of seats, they serve Pepsi, really seemed clean, plenty of specials and the seasonal items means to me they do like to switch it up. That's important for a diner of you ask me. Lows: Not homemade, nothing spectacular stands out and there was not one thing (other than these croquettes) they seem to be known for. And only upon reading and actually doing my web homework did I realize that Guy Fieri's Triple "D" had been here. I dunno all what he ate but I hope it was more than just those croquettes. Honestly, the highlight of my meal was the Vanilla Bean Icebox Cake. DELISH! Fresh, fresh, fresh cake! Totally loved it. I dunno if I would return but I can say it won't hurt to try. It seems to be a local fav.

Great prices, we got there right before they ended breakfast but my nephew wanted oatmeal which is the reason we went there and our waitress ran to the back to get us the last bowl. Breakfast was good and reasonable.

I had the chicken croquettes, potato salad, and coleslaw. The sides were okay, I got "used to it" toward the end of my meal. Perhaps I should have ordered anything salty besides the croquettes to counteract the sweety taste of the sides. The croquettes were awesome, no wonder why they are famous. Great service from the friendly staff. Got a little chat with them about their stint in the Diners, Driveins and Dives show. Id like to come back to try other items on the menu.

Awesome service and absolutely incredible desserts.

A friend suggested The Dining Car as a good place to have brunch food, and he was right. As you enter or exit, you are tempted by cakes, pies, breads and cookies of all sorts. The line to get in moved quickly, and service was fast and great. Portions were ample but we left room in order to split a piece of Fat Elvis Cake! Yum.

My husband and I decided to try The Dining Car after seeing it on DDD. We were seated right away and served coffee. We decided to split the Jewish Apple Cake French Toast and Scrapple. The order was large with 3 thick slices of apple cake and a large slice of scrapple. Both were wonderful. There is a bakery attached to the restaurant with beautiful pastries. Note: The restaurant only takes cash.

my husband and i used to live a couple of blocks away so we used to walk up there fairly often. the food is good. they have a bakery on-site that has a lot of really good desserts. i like the custard eclairs and hubby always gets the apple walnut pie w/vanilla ice cream. their sugar cookies are very good. my favorite take-out bakery item is their jelly sticks...omg...the best around. great onion soup. breakfast is a little overpriced.

When we arrived we were seated quickly buy the hostess. The waitress came over quickly and took our beverage order. She was back in minutes with our drinks and dinner rolls. She gave us a few minutes look over the menu. She took our order, and a special request for cooking my food order. She returned with our meals, the request was honored. She checked on us frequently to make sure everything was good, which it was. When she saw we couldn't eat anymore, she brought boxes for takeing our food home. We've been here many times, the food and service is always fantastic. Angie was our waitress. Ask for her!

I was visiting my dad and he treated me to a meal here on Friday. I had the daily special, which White Clam sauce with wine over spaghetti noodles, New England Clam Chowder soup, a salad, and cheesecake for desert! I think that was THE BEST NECC I have EVER had. Made from scratch, always with fresh, real ingredients, and no preservatives or unnecessary gunk! I mean, WOW! I can't get over the quality of the food! The service was top notch! Our waitress, Beth, was very attentive to our needs and our food arrived quickly and HOT! My dad ordered the sausage scalopini, and that was fantastic, too. We enjoyed our meal so much we went back on Sunday. I enjoyed the Pumpkin Bread French Toast (with bacon drizzled with chocolate!) and dad enjoyed their famous Chicken Croquettes and Chicken Soup. Again, FRESH and creamy on the soup! I would seriously buy their soups and have them delivered to my house! Our waitress was Ashley on Sunday, and again, same level of service. When you go, make sure you bring cash, they do not accept credit/debit cards, but they do make available an ATM outside of the restaurant. When I visit my parents again, I will make sure to eat here at least once on my trip!

Severe food poisoning. Severe vomiting and diarreaha. Rushed to hospital. Was at deaths door. Guy Fieras chicken croquettes. Eat there at your own risk. I could have died. SEVERE FOOD POISONING ALERT.

When living in the Noreast always use to stop at the Dinning car for either breakfeast, lunch, dinner or late nite snack. Was in the neighbor hood on Sunday and stopped by for Sunday dinner. What a big mistake. First, no salt and pepper shakers on the table, no forks, no sugar, and had to ask for small plates for rolls. Food was atrosest. steak sandwitch dry and over done. wifes turkey sandwitch very bad, and aunty chicken crokettes were awful. no need for desert. could not wate to leave. Never again, dinneing car lost a good custumer. and remember the best and worst means of advertisement to word of MOUTH.

05-26-23: The Dining Car shares and spreads Holiday cheer and warmth stressing in part to their solo diners, to feel the staff's warmth encouraged and motivated to commemorate the birthday or holiday in question with a special culinary meal of the customrer's choosing. The solo diner need NOT feel self conscious among this welcoming atmosphere. If one choses, a likewise diner may be near by appreciating some brief related conversation to highlight the special meal to be remembered with fondness. Note: (I always feel added respect for the waitresses whom sacrificed their schedules to serve the public on those particular days: thank you)!.

Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives says the chicken croquetts are what is famous - but that is not the best thing this place has to offer. EVERYTHING is made from scratch and it shows! Burgers are awesome, french onion soup is the bomb, crab imperial is my personal fav - and don't even get me started on the Fat Elvis Cake - O M G! They serve wonderful homemade cinnamon rolls before each meal... too tempting before diner, but worth it to spoil a bit of your appetite! My kids (13 & 15) LOVE this place as much as my husband and I. Great casual restaurant with a nice old fashioned diner like feel, almost always great service and although not cheap, reasonable for the level of quality you receive. We don't live anywhere near this (as Guy would say) "joint", but we make the trip anyway because it's worth it! Oh, and don't forget to stop and the bakery and take some yummies home with you!

This diner is the go-to place for good food at decent prices in the Holmesburg/Torresdale area. Servers are very friendly and food served promptly. We usually eat breakfast and love their Belgian waffles, scrapple and potato pancakes. We recently dined in the afternoon. Food did not come out as quickly as morning but was still acceptable. Prices are a little more than other diners in the area and portions a little smaller than past years. We still like this diner the best because of cleanliness and atmosphere. They do not take credit cards but have an ATM in lobby. Also, bakery is attached with delicious baked goods.

This restaurant use to be where I came as a kid . In a few recent times me & my husband ate there, it's not the same. The glasses are always dirty, the waitresses started putting our drinks in take out cups instead of making sure glasses were clean. The last straw for me was when my husband was in the bathroom. He witnessed a worker leave the restroom without washing his hands. We watched him sit down at counter & then go into kitchen. Never washing his hands .

My wife and I had breakfast at the Dining Car. My wife is a big fan if creamed dried beef. And she should be. The Dining Car makes their own beef and they "frizzle" it before they add the gravy. Served on white toast. Just like mamma did it. The best. I had eggs, homefries and scrapple. Great Scrapple. You have a choice of onions or no onions in the homefries. Go with the onions. Homefries are just right. Rye toast. Made in the diner bakery. I cannot say enough good things about this place. If you like diner food. This is the place to go.
My Favorite Diner in the Area
Me and a group of friends visited this diner after a night out (usual routine for us) and we had what we could say was an acceptable good meal. The waitress was attentive enough (she had like 5 other tables) and the food was prepared relatively quickly. The food is good but some of the items on their menu are a little pricey for the small portion you'll get, but that doesn't apply to everything. My favorite thing to order is a side of cheese (it goes well with just about anything you'll eat and it's just always really good here). I have always gone back, therefore I would recommend anyone in the area to give it a try. I've never had any of their desserts or visited when they have the one other side of it open - I always just peek inside and see cakes and other desserts.
