Great happy hour!

You get the full dish for 1/2 the price for happy hour from 4pm-7pm. Best happy hour in Center city. Delicious menu. Great cocktails special.

Dark, Dingy & Rushed

By Peter D |

We dined here recently during a visit to Philadelphia. It was close to our hotel, and liking Japanese food we decided to check it out. Our table was downstairs and you have to navigate a very dark and dingy staircase, which could be a challenge for some. My wife had to be very careful, as she has brittle bones. Our table was in a corner, and very cramped. In terms of the menu, we went with the chef’s tqsting menu at $79 per person. I hqve to say that the food was excellent, but sadly I do not remember what we ate. Everything happened so quickly, dishes were brought out at a rapid rate. This was not a fine dining experience, but rather it felt like we were ordering fast food, and once served, move on quickly. It is a pity, because it detracts from what could have been an outstanding dinner. Our waitress was friendly and so slick with her service, that we hqd the last dishes before we hqd barely finished the earlier plates. As soon as we were done, the check was provided. Overall a disappointing dining experience.

Loved it!

We did the tasting menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. The edamame dumplings were excellent, the sushi was wonderful...there really wasn't a course that we didn't like. Highly recommend!

Incredible Meal - a must

By Bob S |

We went to double knot for the first time. There were three of us. We bought the tasting menu for $60.00 a person. What a deal! We each had 10 different plates. They were amazing. The absolute best things we had were the cooked skewers of swordfish and the rib eye with scallions. Each bite was a incredible. The crispy Tofu was also divine. The Scallops were also great. You get the picture. So many times restaurants claim to have great food and all short. Not this time. The ambiance was a also great. The service was excellent. One of the best meals We've had in a long time.

Very Poor Customer Service

By CarrieGoldhill |

Horrible customer service, rude manager and the hostess was indifferent. They released our reservation after I had called in to say we were stuck in traffic. We were only 17 minutes late. We will not be returning.

Very good food

By Jacob H |

After passing the unprofessional hostess, it was a very good experience, the food was excellent the waitress was kind and professional. If the hostess tries to suggest a table at the entrance level, do not agree, the atmosphere in the lower level is much better.

Amazingly Unique Experience

By emme45 |

Our dinner at Double Knot was incredibly special. We went with the chef's tasting menu which can get a bit pricey (especially when paired with saki or wine), but we needed help with the wide selection of food choices. We were pleasantly surprised at every dish, each as delicious as the next. We would never have been able to assemble such a spread. Add to that the incredible ambience in the downstairs dining room and we ended with a night to remember!

Top 3 on the best meal ever list

By Dallas D |

Came in with a friend for dinner one evening and sat at the bar downstairs. The bartenders upstairs while we waited were great and we tried the cocktail of the day which was fruity, but good. When we went downstairs our server recommended the Double Knot cocktail which did not disappoint. Torched table side on a barrel stave the smoke really stuck with the drink. We ordered the chef’s tasting menu which consisted of various appetizers both hot and cold, as well as some very filling entrees. The highlights of the meal were confited and fried duck on an everything seasoned bao bun, the fish sauce vinaigrette brusselsprouts, and the lamb chop. We ordered a second round of double knots with house aged spirits that were less sweet, but equally as delicious. Definitely coming back.

Modern Japanese Chic

By PepePitMD |

The restaurant is an experience!! The food , drinks and service top notch . The atmosphere is modern Japanese Chic. Definitely return!

wish there was more light downstairs

By JackTheTraveller |

We were sit downstairs. Had huge difficulties going down the stairs as this place is very dark. In fact, we decided it was so dangerous to go down and that we would not be able to see our food that we decided to leave

We LOVED this restaurant! Great vibe and food!

By Julie B |

This is such a fantastic place! We loved the atmosphere! Our server was fantastic and the food was unbelievably good. Their Gyoza's and fried chicken stood out as our favourites. The Oxtail is a must have!

Perfect Birthday Dinner Double Date

By Michelle W |

What an amazing place. Dinner was delish! Everything we tried we loved. Ambiance was perfect and our service was top notch. Do yourself a favor and save a little room for dessert. This was our first time but already planning a girls night here next! Perfect dinner to start my birthday weekend!

A 10! Everything perfect

I visited this place for dinner. I loved the ambience of the place. Our waitress was really pleasant and the food was amazing!: -MUST: Edamame Dumplings and sushis are amazing with a singular touch!!

Inhospitable, average food, dark

By Kamal C |

The place upstairs area is extremely loud. The basement, called the downstairs area is very dark, the stairs case leading to it as so dark I needed my flash light. I was by myself and the only seat I was offered was at the bar. There were few small tables available. Upon requesting I was given a small table. After that I had to wait for 10 minutes for the waiter to come and give me a menu. Through out my meal I had to draw someones attention to get anything, like having my glass of water filled. The waiter didn' t care to explain the menu to me. The room is so dark it is hard to read the menu. The food was average. The robatayi were uneven: scallopsand beef were great, the eggplant was so-so and the brussels sprouts were over salted and burnt. The shumai were forgetable. Average food, and minimum service was my experience.

Had reservation but we had to wait an good 15 20 minutes - food ok.

By OdenRulerofTheGods |

Good atmosphere. We got 2 Savoy Knot chiefs tasting. The food was ok. 3 beers and the 2 tastings. Service was good. The waitress suggest the tasting menu. If I went again I'd order specific items. Total cost w/o tip 179

Amazing!

By kauffmdr |

While the hosting staff was odd and did not seem to communicate well, the rest of the evening was flawless. Celebrating high school graduation with another family. Meal was exceptional and unique. Menu so extensive and interesting it made it hard to choose. Wait staff was superb. The duck scrapple bao buns are to die for. The robitaiyaki of quail and venison simple and exceptional. Sushi was fresh and clean. Fun bar menu too! A truly terrific experience.

Honest no frills review if you want the real news about this restaurant

By Patentesq |

I have been writing for TA for years, am a top 1% reviewer. Here is an honest no frills assessment of the restaurant from my own personal experience last night. Went with my wife, son and his girlfriend. Everyone was over 21 (no kids) at our table. The first thing we did was take in the very cool way to get to this place, which is thru the main restaurant and down the "secret" staircase into the basement level. This has been transformed into a very cool, and very romantic, eatery complete with bar, sushi table and grill with nicely appointed tables. Very nice they get stars for this. We proceeded to review the menu - which in the very dim lighting even strained the younger eyes at the table, so we had to supplement a bit with the phone light. My son and I ordered the Double Knot whiskey drink, which came out in a snifter glass. Before the drink was poured into the glass, the waiter came over with a torch. He torched and smoked some herbs and spices right on the table and inverted the glass to absorb the smoke flavor. Then turned the glass over and poured in the drink. Wow. This was unusual and a nice show. Kudos on that it was delicious and the smokiness lasted pretty much the entire drink, which was sipped over a long period of time. Nicely done and not too hard on the wallet. Others ordered other drinks. We then proceeded to order robata and menu items. This is a small plate service which means you should not come here starving. Best to eat some pizza first and then come visit. Why do I say this? Here is the observation. The food items were excellent. We ordered fish, meat dishes, ramen dishes, some skewered items and some hand held items. The tuna on cooked rice was great with the cold/hot sequence going on. The surprise great dish of the night was the wings. Go figure, but they were excellent. Just about everything we ate was good. But you have to order a lot. There is one combination prixe fixe option for $60 which includes many items, one from each section actually, but we did not opt in for that this time. But be prepared to order many items in order to full yourself up. The disappointing dish of the night was Chilean sea bass, which was an entree item at $28 bucks and literally was three bites. Shame on them and you had better ask the portion sizing on this if you order it. Oh it was excellent but prices like caviar. My guess is $25 bucks on this was pure profit. Avoid and be warned, unless someone else is footing the bill. Bottom line is be prepared. Make sure you know that by going here you will need to order a lot of items and this will add up at the end. Some items (sea bass) are served in very small portions for what you are paying ($28 bucks plus tax plus tip), which feels like highway robbery right in front of you - and it is. Do not believe any of the online reviews around estimated pricing. They are all wrong. The real bottom line here will set you back at least $70 to $90 per person (all in). So make sure you know what you are in for. Alternatively, we may opt for the DK Grill upstairs next time, which seemed a bit more bustling, more like a bistro, and the food items for what I saw when we left, were about triple the size of what we had downstairs at the robata. So don't say you did not know. Don't get tied in a double knot by not knowing what I wrote here. Enjoy, it's good but be careful.

This restaurant is fantastic and very unique experience.

By 534Ted |

The bar upon entering is really great with good energe. You enter the restaurant through a private staircase downstairs and it feels like entering a private club. Atmosphere is over the top and food is best in the city. Do not miss this!

HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT COME HERE!

By GOLAN P |

AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE OF HORRIBLE SERVICE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS KABUKI SUSHI & AKI NOM NOM WHICH IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER WILL GIVE YOU BETTER SUSHI AND SERVICE!!! I am a neighbor of Double Knot I literally live one block away and frequently visited the restaurant for years. I went in for a late dinner and was given the most horrid service ever. Not to mention I have a large amount of friends that live in the neighborhood that has concurred that the level of service, food & all around experience has tremendously declined recently with the new attitudes of the hosts. By the names of Lori (downstairs) & Chloe (also downstairs). They may gave me fake names, I'm not sure. Myself as well as many others will not be returning because of the level of service and terrible attitudes. Especially from the two mentioned above. This is exactly what happened on December 24th at a reservation time of 7:45pm EST. My guest and I went downstairs to dine of which we had reservations. Once downstairs we were given seating that was extremely too close to others (People concerned about Covid, you'd like to stay very very far away from this place). We simply asked to be sat at a different table. The host at the time (Lori short round) said " those are four tops and they're not available" meanwhile their were several couples in the restaurant eating at 4 tops at this time right in front of our eyes. I asked her again and she started getting frustrated with my guest and I. She then walks past us and takes yet another party of only two to a four top!!! I then stated the other host (Clhoe tall frail) "Hey I just asked for that seat & that's only a party of two as well at a four top!" She then sighed and rolled eyes and proceeded to converse with the other host (Lori). Chloe then came back to my guest and I and told us that Lori (the other host) told her that she didn't know what we were talking about and that she didn't see it when we asked her initially. Which is absolutely absurd because if the owner were to look at the security cameras, he would see us pointing directly at the table she sat the other TWO-PERSON party at! Chloe then said "follow me".. clearly now she's flustered and tired of conversing with me, so she sat my guest and I down because out of nowhere "a guest cancelled". Which was total BS.... I then said, "Thank you, can I --" (At this time Chloe interrupts me mid-sentence and says " Yeah if you'r about to ask me for a manager, I AM THE MANAGER!!" -Extremely rude! After sitting for what felt like eons for a server to come over to take our order, we then went back upstairs. We were serviced by a gentleman named Danny who really was a complete gem. He was attentive, pleasant & an absolute delight to have serving our meal. In conclusion, if you like horrid service, attitudes, blatant disregards to your reservations, a Covid Epicenter, condescending hosts/managers & favoritism, come to this terrible excuse of a neighborhood establishment. If you'd like better options, try Morimoto, Aki NomNom or Kabuki.

Not worth it

By Kat A |

Had sushi at two different sushi places today. The sushi restaurant with no ambience (but clean) was waaaay better than this upscale overpriced sushi spot. I paid $15 for 3 huge rolls at the first place. This place - $33 for a total of 12 pieces. Ridiculous. And they were way tinier than traditional rolls I’ve had. I got one sake. And one order of pork gyoza as well. 5 pieces. Bill came to $64. Don’t come here if you’re really hungry or you will leave broke. Also a few of the pieces of the California roll had an odd grainy taste. Will not be back. Not worth it.

Beautifully prepared Sunday breakfast buffet in Midtown Village.

By MotoMoto7117 |

Visited Double Knot shortly after 9:30 am opening time for Sunday breakfast buffet. Staff politely informed me that buffet didn't start until 10am but that I was welcome to order coffee and pick from available pastries. (Coffee was excellent.) Relaxed on one of restaurant's leather chairs and enjoyed the quiet and offbeat vintage surroundings. Buffet was very good, including yogurt and various fresh fruits, juices served in small glass bottles, wonderful bacon, and even Japanese somen salad (which, was good but was missing its usual flavored rice vinegar dressing). A refreshing, civilized, and reasonably priced meal in a busy city. Great place for visitors staying downtown who want something more than your standard hotel breakfast.

Wow'd

By Joseph A |

Truly an experience. Jill and I were a little overwhelmed by the different choices offered, so we had the Chef's tasting menu. We enjoyed flavors that we would not have otherwise have had. This was really a great dinning experience.

Delicious, Stylish Lunch for $7

By Adam G |

Double Knot really knocks the ball out of the park with their daily lunch options (from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.). You choose a base of noodles, rice, salad, or sandwich, then choose a protein -- shrimp, chicken, pork, or steak. Each option comes atop a bed of Double Knot's house cabbage salad with an excellent fish sauce. I had rice with pork, and even the rice was delicious -- it's cooked in coconut milk. I couldn't believe the meal was only $7, and I was full afterwards (I'm a relatively large person who was relatively hungry). My friends chose noodles with shrimp, rice with chicken, and noodles with steak. All were fantastic. Even better is the fact that double Knot follows a fast-casual style for lunch, so you pay at the counter without gratuity. Super comfortable, beautiful environment with soft music. I'll go again and often.

Modern Japanese in a Swanky Location

By AlwaysOnTheGo53 |

It's dark, moody and cozy in this restaurant. The cocktails are inventive. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. But it's the food where this place really shines. Great flavors - a nice mix of traditional Japanese cuisine and modern appeal. I went on my own and sat at the bar, but this is probably a great spot for a date or dinner with friends.

Good food, Strange decor

By Justin M |

I think the draw for most people is the food...which was out of this world. Nothing that we shared (between 6 people) was bad. AMAZING flavor in every dish. The environment is a bit odd. The basement area is super dark, almost dangerous to walk. Kind creepy. But perhaps that's the draw?? I'd go again, but I'd stay upstairs and risk being bumped into and not able to hear. (The basement was noisy, but you could hear your fellow diners when they spoke.) The candles up against the wall in the bathroom were an interesting choice!

Great second time

By Noah W. |

The first time I was here I wanted a better experience (the patrons next to us were quite needy and it left us wanting more). We stopped in again on a whim and had a great meal and conversation with the bar tender who remembered us from that night and was very happy to make it up to us. Thanks for everything!

Great food / service

By Christina Y |

Make reservations early for DK so that you can enjoy the ambiance of the lower group seating during dinner. We brought our 4-month year old and they were so accommodating. They checked in our stroller and shopping bags so we could have a clutter-free table. We didn't do the chef tasting which I regret a little. However, everything we had was great: Endame dumplings, Crab Udon, Fried Rice, Skewers. Excellent asian fusion.

Cool vibes and excellent service!

By Jill R |

The upstairs is a great space to hangout for young people. The downstairs is the way to go for a family dinner. It is such a great ambiance. The service was attentive, but not stuffy at all, just very friendly! We ordered so many things and everything was amazing. I will say the sushi was my least favorite dish out of it all. Seemed like more rice than fish. The tuna cold plate was AMAZING!

Best Restaurant in Philly

By Lyonsaj |

I have lived in Philly most of my life. For the last couple of years I would argue that either Double Knot or Zahav are the most uniquely good restaurants to Philly. The tasting menu is a must and a great value. The double knot drink is really fun, especially down stairs with the blow torch. I have eaten here 5 or so times and have never been disappointed.

Knot what we thought

By Garett S |

With friends going to Double Knot before us, we had heard good things about the restaurant. We arrived to a packed bar, and even with a reservation had a pretty long wait. We were escorted downstairs to a dining area that was repurposed out of a 19th century cellar, with tons of brick and up and down small sets of steps to varying floor levels. Our server was friendly Unfortunately the food did not blow us away as expected. We ordered a sampling across the menu, including hamachi, ceviche, robatayaki, and short rib, among others. Nothing was unappetizing, but as regular diners at similar restaurants in Center City, we were hoping for more. A decent meal, but for the price, wait, and reputation, overall it was an average meal.

Out of this world!

By erin w |

Went here to celebrate a friend’s birthday with a group of six ladies. Sat downstairs in the dark and cozy basement. We decided to do the chef’s tasting menu that allows you to choose 10 items and includes a dessert for $65 (60 if you don’t do the lobster). Everything we had was delicious and we even had some of the less adventurous eaters trying new things. There seemed to be items from each section of the menu that would fit almost any type of person. It is definitely pricey so be prepared but I found the whole dining experience to be well worth it! Definitely do the short rib...it melted in your mouth!!

An amazing world of Japanese tapas

By SophieBlue09 |

I immediately loved the old ship-like atmosphere with low ceilings, lots of wood and metal, and lit candles of this very popular restaurant. My friend and I had a 7:30 PM reservation on a Friday night. The hostess station is at the back on the street-level, and we waited a few minutes before being seated downstairs which was much larger but just as inviting. The server was incredible! My friend ordered a dry martini and I had a New Savoy Knot cocktail which was so good that I had another one! We each ordered a hearts of palm salad that was more generous than a tapas size. Some of the other "tastes" that were larger than expected included: Brussel sprouts, Japanese fried chicken, mushrooms, and a special seafood "taco." Everything was incredibly delicious and the staff perfectly attentive without overdoing it. I would definitely return the next time I'm in Philly!

Not just a dinner, an experience!

By Irina B |

My great Double Knot experience is my first 5 star review in quite a while. I have not gone out and been so impressed for some time and glad that my beloved Philly could deliver. I think it's important to start out with a little shout out to our sever Ryan. Especially after reading some negative comments about service. While I don't doubt that everyone can have a off day, Ryan did not! He was an epitome of an excellent waiter. Attentive but not in your face, perfect amount of food items suggestion but not trying to pad the bill, friendly and sweet. Not to mention everything he suggested we order was excellent. The decor is really cool, it's a basement but without the dingy feeling of being underground. The decorators did a very nice job at trying to recreate a very seductive yet industrial environment. Lot's of iron, wood, giant candelabras with half burned candles. Gender neutral bathroom with a giant iron tub for a sink. The lovely open robotayaki grill that produced most mouthwatering smell of grilled skewers. This has to be one of the cooler restaurant spaces in Philly. I was a group of 4 and we were able to try a variety of dishes. All of them were great and I will not go into detail as other reviewers did a very good job at that already. But I will point out some of my faves. We did not make it to dessert as we re-ordered some of the dishes and were stuffed by the end. - Uni, not on the menu but we were told they had a fresh shipment in that day. Decadent and indeed very very fresh. In fact we ordered more after the first bite - Hamachi from the "Cold" dishes - fresh and tasty. Perfect portion for sharing. - Robatayaki - we had a variety and all were excellent, melt in your mouth, smoky flavor bites of goodness. My favorite was the swordfish. It had such an intense umame flavor that I had a hard time believing it was swordfish. - Turkey neck robatayaki - wow! Is it a bit messy, yes. Will you be able to eat this with your chopsticks? Probably not. Is it worth ordering at only $4 for a giant, decadent, tons of meat on the bone lick your fingers turkey neck? Yes!! I was kind of blown away to be honest. It tasted like short rib but better, fall apart with a perfect amount of sauce. This was my favorite dish on the menu. - Shrimp Taco was the only dish I did not love. I thought it was very uneventful and the tortilla was tough and overpowering. Oh well. I cannot wait to go to Double Knot again so I could try the rest of the menu. They are open quite late so making reservation is not as hard as it seems if you don't mind a 9pm dinner.

Happy Hour home run

By @diningonadime1 |

I went for Happy Hour and had a big bowl of kimchi fried rice for just 4 bucks and it was delicious...it was great but it could've had more kimchi to give it more heat because surprisingly it had little to no heat...the Happy Hour menu has several 3 and 4.00 dishes....this is another Center City restaurant that is a little too dark for my liking...I guess low lighting is the new trend

Awesome

By Tim S |

Several of my colleagues wanted Japanese and we heard good things about Double Knot. What an amazing experience. The food the service and the atmosphere where fantastic.

Great night out!!

By Pirate828 |

We did the chef's tasting on a Tuesday night, awesome atmosphere, delicious food, go hungry because there is a lot. Dark, chic downstairs eating area, felt like we were somewhere secret.

Crazy Fun Place, but the food was nothing special

By Brian S |

Full disclosure - we were probably the oldest people in the restaurant. But we loved the energy, the great people watching and the experience. The staff were extremely friendly and the service was prompt. We really enjoy Japanese food, but I cannot say the dishes we sampled were more than average. We sampled some hand rolls, some crab dim sum, also the Brussels sprouts... they were actually our favorite item we sampled. Good drink menu and wines. Really a fun place.

Modern Romance

By pookala |

A restaurant with a dark and dreamy decor serving modern asian comfort food? Sounds impossible - but Double Knot makes it work. From the fabulous smoky signature cocktail of bourbon and rye, to their edamame dumplings, a great version of gyoza, a large selection of grilled skewers and enough vegetable choices to make a vegetarian happy; this is a dining experience you won't forget. We sampled 22 different items, Some plates only have a few pieces so it wasn't complete gluttony on our part. Plates are served family style and sharing is the order of the day with lighter dishes arriving first and ending with the heartier entrees. The service was spot-on and with a generous tip our birthday celebration for a party of six at $80 a person (10 drinks) was not inexpensive but provided real value. A fabulous time was had by all. PS, It's dim in the downstairs dining room so you might need to use your phone to read the menu.

Love this place !

By delas86 |

I was able to snag a last minute reservation for Double Knot on opentable for last Friday 11/17. We arrived for our reservation and seated downstairs rather quickly. The food small plates but filling and soooo good! I ordered the Miso Soup, Lobster Claw and Skirt Steak. That lobster claw was so good I had to order another one as well as the steak. I also had the bacon wrapped asaparagus. My friend had the shrimp tacos, and lobster tail. Together we spend about $50 a piece. I will definately be back again! Our waitress was excellent ! And the drinks were good also. Super cute and nice restaurant for happy our a date night or just a good meal.

Light Dinner

By Natsfan0212 |

Stopped in early on a Saturday evening, was able to get a spot at the bar. Service was prompt and courteous. Menu is made up of several small dish options, which was great for a drink and to try a couple different items.

Innovative Menu

By foodnut003 |

Innovative menu, with Asian flair. Very wide range of food types-venison, octopus, etc. Interesting twists of typical foods-edamame dumplings, etc.

Delicious hidden gem

By foodlovergirlny |

There is something about speakeasy that is so sexy and attractive…maybe it is the secrecy, or the mysteriousness of it, or just a simple joy of discovering a hidden gem. This had a big bar to the left of the entrance, and lounge sofa/chairs across from the bar. I heard their Happy Hour offerings are pretty awesome, and I see that it is true with their popularity. But, we were here for the secret izakaya scene… So we walked over to the hostess station at the back. I saw an exit door behind the hostess station, and it seems like that is the door we need to go through to get to the speakeasy. Even though we had a reservation, we were told to wait…and they don’t really have a “waiting” space around the hostess section, so it was kind of annoying… After about 10 minutes or so, we finally got to see what was hiding beyond the exit door. Well, it was a long, dark, mysterious staircase, it felt like going down into a cave of some sort. Here, it really felt like we were in a cave, where we might encounter a vampire or Count Dracula with lots of candles, emphasizing on the particular mood. The entire space was kind of dark with dimmed lights. It was very relaxing, and not too loud, since they don’t cramp the space with too many tables. We had several kinds of cocktails like Jungle Bird Slip, and The Savoy Knot. We had several small dishes to share, including sushi roll, Enoki Bacon, and Nikuman Lazy Bun. We ended with a couple of desserts to complete the fabulous dinner. Everything we tried were really tasty, high quality, and well prepared. The service here was great. Every time we emptied a plate, one of the staffs walking by picked it up immediately. Very efficient! Between few of the different dishes, they also changed our serving plates without us asking for it. Our waitress Danielle was awesome, friendly, polite, professional and gave great recommendations. Explained menu in detail and took care of us really well. A manager (?) came by to ask if we were enjoying the meal during our dinner, which was also a nice touch. We had a great dinner here, delicious high quality food and drinks, and the price was very affordable!

Food Coma!

By 860Vetman |

Double Knot puts out some of the best Japanese style food I've had in awhile. The restaurant is small and very dimly lit. That is a problem while trying to figure out what you'd like to order. Numerous people were using cell phones to read the menu, our group included. That to me is disturbing. Aside from that the food was pretty good. We had so many entrees it was hard to pick our best. For me it was the Tuna Tartare. Some portions are quite small so ordering many plates seems to be the thing to do. Not being able to get a reservation prior to 10 PM on a Saturday night kinda tells you what kind of business they have as all the tables were occupied. Lilly our server was a hoot, she was fun and very helpful.

Amazing

By Heidi T |

Amazing from start to finish! Highly recommend the 10 course option! Tried things I wouldn’t normally try and they were all so good!

Tops!!!

By Forever_Pink9 |

Hands down one of the TOP restaurants in the city!! When here this week with my husband and we could not believe how amazing EVERY course was that we had. We did the chefs tasting but did our own selections....with the help of our amazing waitress Sam(antha). They had a delicious Sancerre on their wine list that we paired with our meal and it was outstanding. We will be back SOON!! PS - This restaurant is sooo cool ...weird when you enter...the maitrenD is in the back of the room(bar in front) and then you for downstairs or to the room on the side to dine. I say ask for a seat downstairs! It’s sooo cool!!!

Wonderful food but VERY VERY noisy and dark.

By TravlelingFlash |

Double Knot is the Japanese Fusion tapas bar of Sampan. The food is really, really good and the portions are eminently shareable, and generous. I can't imagine what you would have to do to actually get through the tasting menu! Recommendations: cheese curls, pork gyoza with scallion pancake and a yummy sauce, lamb chop, seafood tacos. Downsides: this restaurant is VERY VERY noisy (the bar is unbearable, we feel for the people who work there), and very dark. It's in Depression speakeasy style -- lots of stairs, and doors and hallways. But worth it -- especially if you can come at the very beginning or very end of the service period, so there are fewer people. And they were great about getting us out in time for the theater.

Chef's Tasting? Oh Yeah!

By mclmk8d |

My son kept talking about Double Knot, so we decided to do that for NYE. A spot opened up at the right time. Excellent food and service; our server David was extremely helpful, knew his menu, and was funny to boot. I'd ask for him again. We did the chef's tasting and every course was delicious. Starting with sushi, going through cold food, crispy food, etc. By the end of the meal, we were full (of course, the extra order of scallops put us over the top). The cocktails were well done; we both had the two lovers cocktail. We will definitely be returning.

Exceeded expectations, nicely done

By Frolichhaus |

We visited Double Knot Saturday, after the Illusionists show at The Merriam. We walked into a very lively and noisy bar, restaurant area at street level but upon our reservation being acknowledged, we were escorted downstairs to a surprising dining room, bar, and cooking area. Our waitress, who has been with them since it opened, explained the menu, suggested a good wine and helped us make our 10 selections from the chefs tasting menu. Everything we were served was excellent. Dishes initially came out a bit too quickly, but after noting that to our waitress the pace was great. We had a wide variety and all were scrumptious.

Incredibly delicious. Perhaps my new favorite in Philadelphia.

By Donald S |

A visitor from Dallas at the table next to me told me, he read it is #4 in the list of best restaurants in Philadelphia. IME it would be closer to #1. A friend recommended it and I am glad I went. The server said the chef is Japanese, but another staff member said not really. So I am not sure. It is an Izakaya (drinking place that sells food). About the BAR: They have a lot of fancy drinks including popular smoke drinks where the glass is first filled with smoke. Being a very “in” place, I worry it is more about perception and hype and “being seen” than quality. I almost felt they would reject me at the door for being to old to enter. The crowd is young, hip and willing to spend money. The bar can be impressive to watch, but when asked about potato vodkas they incorrectly named Titos (corn). That is disappointing for all the pretense. Also, as a test I asked for wedges of lime and lemon. They would always be freshly cut in a good restaurant (or any authentic Japanese restaurant), but these were both old and had that bad smell proving they had been cut many hours to days before. That was a huge disappointment. Also, although the bar seems to be a centerpiece – one on each floor, and they have a Japanese influence and nice sake list, there is no shochu list. In fact, I was told they only have a house shochu for making mixed drinks. There is still a rather extensive list of cocktails, wines and sakes. It seems to be a place to bring dates to impress. Upstairs (ground floor) has a nice happy hour and seems to be always full. Downstairs has the full menu and is where reservations can be made and are recommended. It is an old building but nicely rehabbed for the space. It is comfortable. The wait staff and general staff are all very friendly and helpful. The menu is extensive. It can be a combination of izakaya dining (small plates in a drinking establishment) and sushi and robatayaki (grilled foods). It was difficult to make a decision. Luckily there is a chef’s tasting menu of only $55 for 10 tastes of different sections of the menu. I had planned to order many more things but was quite full from this menu. Some things I ordered had an “up” charge, so it wasn’t really $55. With the sake, tasting menu and a few extra items and tip it was just over $300 for one person. That being said, it was totally worth the price. I love authentic Japanese food, so am hesitant about fusion, but this worked – making me think the chef is, indeed, actually Japanese. The scallop with wasabi, tempura flakes and preserved lemon was a perfect start. I love Mexican ceviche, so the Japanese version (kampachi, mango, yuzu kosho ponzu) was a wonderful treat. The foie gras nigiri sushi was divine – so I ordered it twice more – at $10 each. But perfect. I had planned on having a lot of the grilled foods (robatayaki) but will have to return for the others later. I did have the venison and lamb and both were perfectly cooked and just terrific. I love duck so had to try the duck scrapple bao bun. It was fun very good. The dry aged strip steak with port yakitori shiso chimichurri was also a treat and cooked as I had asked. I even enjoyed the mezzuna pesto miso caramel tofu. I’ll get that next time for sure. Same for the Brussels sprouts with scallion, fish sauce and crispy rice. My dessert was another foie gras nigiri but also some A-5 Kobe nigiri (which I think was a bit over cooked) and some toro nigiri. They told me they sell fresh ground wasabi root for $5. In Japan it is brought to the table so the diner can grate it there, but apparently here it is done elsewhere before things arrive. Two of the last items at over $11 each piece supposedly came with fresh wasabi, but I couldn’t tell it was really there. I think I forgot to mention my server was wonderful and could easily answer any of my questions about the food. A perfect evening.

Great Original Drinks, Wonderful Food and Impeccable Service

By Waterlaw |

The restaurant, which is below ground, has terrific ambiance and is simply beautifully appointed. The food is magnificent. My orders were vegetarian, e.g., Edamame Dumplings that were composed of Truffles, Pea Shoots with Sake Broth ($7) and Mushroom Dumplings composed of Panko, Citrus and Pickled Mushrooms ($7.) but my fellow guests loved the lamb chops and Potsticker Sausage. The original cocktails were a great hit with all of us, including The Pocket Knot (Scotch, Lemongrass, Tea Honey, Ginger, Yuzu); the Double Knot (Bourbon, Rye, Sweet Vermouth, Dry Vermouth, Bitters, Barrel Stave Smoke) or the Two LOvers Knot (Citrus Vodka, Asian Pear, Sage, Bubbles) and about 10 others, all at about $11 to $12 per) We sat at the bar and watched the drinks being prepared and were impressed by the preparation of the drinks, especially the smokey ones. It was a lot of fun. Friends of ours sat at the tables. One thing we were all aware of was the impeccable service.

Great meal and eat downstairs!

By bluejeanfood |

With its sleek ambiance and exceptional service Double Knot really shines, but they go above and beyond when they create the perfect trifecta with amazing and delicious food to boot. The chefs tasting is the way to go as why not let the chef send out what they think will be the best thing to serve that day. Every course was delicious and can honestly say each was fantastic. I highly recommend a visit here and make sure to dine downstairs if possible.

Lovely Experience

By MFig |

Tiny little spot under the same ownership as SamPan. We tried the chef's tasting menu and was neither disappointed nor hungry! Standout dishes for me were the Albacore Tuna in an onion ponzu, the Mushroom gyoza with an amazing truffle ponzu sauce, the ribeye robatayaki, as well as scallop in the jalapeño oil. The service and atmosphere was great, but be aware that the restaurant is tight. We sat downstairs for dinner after having a drink at the bar. Overall, I'd give it 4.5 stars. I'd definitely visit again. Reservations can be difficult to get, so make sure you book early.

Fabulous food, interesting atmosphere

By JPC_TP |

Other than finding the entrance, and then finding the stairs to get out, the experience was excellent. The place is a labrynth if you are seated downstairs, but fun getting there. Food and service was excellent, a mix of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine.

Amazing dinner experience

We had a table of 8. We choose the chef's menu and let our waiter and chef pick all courses and we were NOT disappointed Every selection brought to our table was greeted with "OMG THIS Is my favorite dish" Not one thing brought out was less than the previous If I ever return to philly this WILL be on my to do list again Simply amazing

WOW

First time out at this restaurant and will definetly be back. Great Food, Great Service and Great Ambiance. Was it expensive, yes, but for a great dining experience we were fine with the cost. We were seated downstairs which was dimly lit but a cool vibe. We went with the tasting menu and we let the chef decide our courses. We were treated to 10 courses including sashimi, kobe skewers, NY Strip Streak, Sea Bass, Scallops, Rice Crackers, Ramen, Japanese Chicken, Duck Scrapple, Tuna Rolls and the desert which was Moki. Needless to say we brought home some great treats for tomorrow. We had 4 people and ordered 2 classes of house wine. For the tasting menu figure around $100 pp all in with tip.

Swordfish meatballs. Miso eggplant. Hanger steak. Dungeness crab dumplings. Wasabi yellowtail roll. Unagi. Ceviche. It was all delicious.

Fantastic!

By Heather S |

The atmosphere is very cool. The entire place was packed on a Tuesday night. We cannot stop talking about the food. Absolutely loved everything. The rice cracker, scallop skewer, swordfish skewer, and shishito peppers were particularly tasty. A vegetarian can walk away very satisfied. Nice choice of wines. The double knot drink was very creative and everyone loved it. Highly recommend and cannot wait to return.

Amazing and cool spot

Was in town for a conference. Went with a group of 10. Staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about eclectic menu that takes some time to read. She was very patient with our group. Extremely fresh and tasty food. Reasonably priced. Great grotto-like atmosphere. Vibrant. Hip. Packed on a Thursday night. Highly recommend!

When you can’t wait to write a review...

By ZerohF |

...because it was that good. Celebrated my daughter’s birthday-her suggestion. We chose the chef’s tasting meal and asked the chef to choose the dishes for us. I find this works well and we weren’t disappointed in the choices. Everything was fresh and delicious. Soy sauce is on the table but please don’t use it on the perfect sushi dishes. It’s seasoned perfectly. We loved the cheese balls which sat on top of something called yum yum sauce. Really. Duck was brilliant as we’re the brussel sprouts in fish sauce. Do request the sea bass. It may have been the best thing I’ve eaten all year (note it’s October) While the bar area upstairs and Sampan next door are usually quite busy and loud this downstairs dining room is like entering a chill back room speakeasy. Very cozy and fairly quiet. The decor is beautiful. Service was outstanding. Attentive, knowledgeable but unobtrusive. Quite a lovely and impressive wine list, as well. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening!

Good food, creative menu

By ladyright |

We had dinner here for birthday celebrations and really enjoyed the ten course tasting menu, in particular , the sea bass, Brussel sprouts, and tuna and avocado sushi . We liked the ambience although it was a little too dark. A few negatives-we dropped our three adult children off while we went to park the car. It was difficult to find a parking space and they told our children that there was only a fifteen minute grace period and if we weren't there exactly within fifteen minutes, we would lose our table. I think that's a bit extreme, especially since three of our party were there. They also rushed the food a little, presumably because they wanted the table for the next seating. We brought a birthday cake, and they had a per person plate charge for the cake which seemed a bit excessive especially since we just paid $60 per person for the meal. Also, there was a small dessert included with the dinner which was tasteless. We would still return to this restaurant, although I would ask them to slow down the food next time.

Delicious

By glenside |

The food is delicious- recommend edamame dumplings, fried rice (can share with table) sea bass, chocolate dessert. Portions are small and would order a few dishes-some to share. Only complaint was that the help staff continued to clear dishes from our table before we were finished including drinks. They were so fast even though we tried to say something, they were gone. We had mentioned this and it still continued as though they were rushing us to turn the table. Our waitress was very attentive and provided good recommendations. Main level is very active and noisy and prefer to eat downstairs at tables and quieter.

Great Vibe and Great Food

By Julie |

I was in Philly for business and could not have been more surprised by the vibrant food scene: amazing. My favorite was a place I accidentally stumbled upon called Double Knot. Go there. Now. It's warm and cozy, dimly lit (which I love), and wonderful service. We had no reservation mid-week and were let down a candlelit staircase to a charming corner table. Not too loud, lovely server, food that blew me away. Went back a few days later for their famous $7 lunch. Seriously. They offer bowls you 'build' with various grains, proteins, and beautifully fresh greens. The coffees are wonderful...the entire space is charming. My vote for a great Philadelphia experience. They've recently opened a new place next door called Amber Rose, which I would assume is just as 'wow'.

Cool place

By Meghan J |

Went for brunch with a friend who had been here previously for dinner. Very cool atmosphere - relaxed, hip vibe. Brunch was really good, offering fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, meat, potatoes, quiche and the unique rice noodle salad and Korean beef. Coffee was meh - perhaps I should have sprung for the latte since they did have an espresso machine.

Great happy hour

Drinks and well priced apps at about $5 each. Good service. You can sit at the bar or at tables in the bar area. Happy hour was great timing for after a theater matinee.

Amazing Birthday Celebration!

By KellysGirl0805 |

We had been to Double Knot once before and loved it so much that my wife wanted to have her 50th birthday celebration there. The food, the service, the atmosphere were all perfect! Great for groups and dates..

Perfect food and service

By em-2115 |

I came here without a reservation and was seated in their top floor (the bottom floor is like a secret bar, but it was too dark in my opinion to properly see and enjoy a meal). For food, the sea bass I ordered was soft and melted in my mouth. The cheesecake for dessert was not overpowering and wasn't too sweet. Best of all, the server, Samantha, was extremely friendly, attentive, and energetic. She always asked if everything was ok and engaged in lively conversation. Because of the amazing service and food, I would definitely come here again!

Atmosphere, service, good food

By Denise A |

Extremely popular, esp among the young and hip-you will need a reservation, especially if you want a table instead of the bar. Very cool use of space, and excellent service. We thought it was a sushi place but while that is on the menu, it's actually a tapas bat. We love that and had fun picking and choosing a variety. It's pricey so we didn't do the tasting menu, but still managed to try quite a variety. The house cocktails are fun as well. If you park at the Patriot garage, they will validate (but nowhere else).

Try the tasting menu!

By kylafell18 |

The food here was absolutely amazing. We decided to do the tasting menu to try a little bit of everything and it was worth it!

Not my idea of top knot....

By kate b |

Asked to have dinner here by a business associate. I would not return. The whole place seemed chaotic and rather confused, from the entrance making one walk the length of the bar to find the mait're d, to the waitress telling us the chef isn't happy to take additional orders of food once you have ordered. OK, so the fussy chef can get away with a lot if they're...no, they should not. One must descend a lengthy, metal staircase so dimly lit, it's amazing they haven't been sued. Again, doesn't Philadelphia have to comply with the ADA? Romantic it is not, since you are sandwiched into tables and banquettes so close together, you can hear every word your nearby diners are saying. Good food and one standout...the bacon and asparagus robatakayi. The sushi was just so-so...and yes, I am hard to impress because of west coast and Hawaiian standards. The whole experience was not up to par, but not horrible. The downsides won in the end.

Double Good

By Jack B |

The service is very good, very attentive, very accommodating. The portions are small (think Asian tapas), but the quality is excellent. There were six of us, and we had a total of 13 items. Every one flavorful and enjoyable. And the price is very reasonable.

Night Out

The tasting menu was a perfect selection. Plenty of food and everything was delicious. The drinks were a little pricey but it is city prices. Loved Double Knot & definitely will return.

Wow awesome!

Been wanting to try for a while. Blew us away. Wonderful and creative Japanese. We did a tasting menu. Spectacular rib eye robatayaki melt in your mouth, to die for ceviche, tuna, crab shu Mai, I loved everything. Shout out to our waiter Dustin. Fantastic downstairs setting is glamorous and cool. Great cocktails and the restaurant is a very good value. So many menu options in various categories of small plates p, bites, cold and hot appetizer sizes, larger plates etc. . Cannot wait to go back. Definitely one of the best Asian in Philly. Also live Royal Izakaya but Double Knot is a better value with more choices and fab atmosphere.

Totally overrated: Nice sake list, nice fresh fish, but they don't know how to cook proper Japanese

By Makoto N |

I went to have a dinner at Double Kont with Japanese friends. We all grew up in japan but somehow ended in the states, so we are very picky about Japanese food. I was looking forward to dining here, since I heard good things from friends, and it is hard to get a table for a dinner. In short, we are very disappointed. I am not sure what people who rave about this place know Japanese cuisine. Pros: (1) Sake list was great. Of course expensive, but I am happy to pay for good Junmai Daiginjo for a special occasion. (2) I think I was told that they brinf fish from Tokyo. The sashimi fish was of great quality. (3) The waiter at our dinner table was at least trying (without positive outcome). (4) Skewers (robata yaki) were ok. But this is not difficult not to mess up with this. Cons (1) It started at the bar upstairs. I wanted to order a beer, but the two bartenders did not notice me for more than 5 minutes even though the bar was not too crowded. It was surprising since they have a lot of people doing nothing really. One bartender was busy chatting and taking orders from seemingly regular,s who came after i came. (2) Virtually all sashimi were served on a (really) warm plate. This is basically cooking sashimi on the plate. I think they just used the places right out of dishwasher. We asked them to change the plate, to cooler ones, but the results (I think they just put the same fish on a similarly warm plates). Basically people there do not understand the concept of raw Japanese cuisine. (3) We asked to put all the sashimi on one plate, but they did not do it. (4) At the end, we ordered yaki- soba (fried noodle) and fried rice, but both were terrible --- either too sweet or too salty. As for noodles, they seem to use a really cheap "instant noodle." The noodles were horrible. Any Japanese can cook them better. In the end, sake was great, atmosphere was great, but (apart from robata yaki and quality of fish), dishes were something I can cook much better. I will never eat here again I think. And if you want to know good Japanese, you should stay away.

Wow, just wow

By Denise H |

Brunch at Double Knot far exceeded my expectations. In a foodie town like Philly, Vietnamese is popping up outside of 9th and Washington and fused with many other cuisines. And this restaurant is interesting on so many levels. Let's start with the food. We went for brunch on a chilly Sunday in November, and I can't wait to come back and visit for other meals. It was divine. We split the Egg & Pork Belly Bahn Mi, which was heavenly. Then the star was really the Togarashi Eggs Benedict, with an 'everything' bao bun, pork potsticker sausage and spicy hollandaise. It really mashed America/French brunch ideas with fresh Asian flavors; it was a small and very smart little menu. The restaurant is located on 13th Street, in the heart of everything fun and bustling. The bar is draped beautifully along the wall, and there is a small dining area with banquets. It's just adorable with some fine eats. The menu is crafted to suit the finest foodies, offering some "create your plate" options at brunch. I am so very glad to have found this place!

excellent creative izakaya

Highly recommended: edamame dumplings, duck scrapple buns, octopus robatayaki, black cod fried rice.

A Japanese gem in Philly

By MadeinNewY0rk |

Places like Double Knot are very easy to find in Manhattan, so when I walked into this place in Philly I was very surprised. The interior has a wonderful ambiance and the initial drink I got from the bartender was very strong and delicious. Just the way I like it. This is no ordinary Japanese style place. They recommended we order 8 to 10 dishes for 2 people, but ended up only ordering 5 and still left food on the dishes. The portions are HUGE! Will definitely be back.

If you don't do the tasting, you're beyond help

By stallroad |

We went for a very casual business dinner for three people. We had Danielle as a server and asked her to pick our tasting for us. She hit it out of the park and everything was amazing. For $55 a person and 10 different tastes of amazing modern Japanese food you're crazy not to do it

5 Stars until the END!!! POOR, UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE from MANAGER!

By LesleyMoP |

The meal was absolutely delicious! However, I would NEVER return! My husband and I were visiting Philly for business and went out with colleagues for a meal! They chose this place! We arrived an hour before dinner and ordered several appetizers and drinks at the bar. When our business colleagues arrived, we were escorted to our table of 4. Each of us ordered 2+ drinks during our time and even selected the Chef's Menu for the entire table. After really liking one dish, we even ordered seconds! We were incredibly easy patrons to this restaurant and our colleagues from Philly dine here often. As soon as we got the check, the manager came to our table and asked us to leave as there were other people waiting for our particular table. We had been there less than 2 hours and ordered an incredibly expensive menu for a table of 4. This is NOT the way to win friends and influence others. This female manager should be disappointed in her own behavior. As a business owner, I want clients for LIFE! And, she clearly was only in this for a "one and done transaction!"

A Low-Key Night with High-Quality Food

By AlevGefen |

So, it's my birthday. After enjoying champagne and opening presents with my folks, my SO and I head to Double Knot for a lovely meal. The restaurant is big yet not overwhelmingly so; the lights were dim, but I could see the menu perfectly (an important criterion for a blind mouse like me, ha-ha) Our lovely waitress was above and beyond, checking on us after every dish and making sure the water glass never ran on empty. The food, prepared at the nearby Sampan restaurant, was exquisite: Tuna tataki, edamame dumplings, stuffed mushrooms with carrot puree, and miniature wagyu beef skewers instantly ,melted in my mouth. The birthday girl was one happy camper! Except... The dessert (three micro-mini scoops of ice cream) were not complementary, like we were promised. Oh, well, it's a small grain of sand in an otherwise perfect pile of treasure. Besides, I still had a beautiful and delicious cake waiting at home. Whether you're about to tie a knot, ring in another year, or shoot the breeze with a lovely bunch of people over some deliciousness, Double Knot will hit the spot!

A wonderful find

By JENIFER M |

We stumbled upon the Double Knot--it's almost a hidden door next to Sampan restaurant. Since the basement restaurant had a super long wait, we stayed in the cozy bar and were able to order off the same menu. Many interesting options featuring sushi & robatayaki and sake. I looked at the website after and see the restaurant has a number of different personalities--from cool coffee bar in the morning, to dumpling lunch and then happy hour and Japanese inspired restaurant.

I never want to eat anywhere else!

By Lauren D |

This place was phenomenal. Not only do you feel very elite because the restaurant is in the basement but you actually are elite. Everything there is competitively priced and delicious. The drinks were amazing and unique. Our bartender Amy was awesome and friendly. Will definitely return!!!

Awesome atmosphere and Fantastic food

By Christine15 |

Make your reservation far in advance. It can be difficult to get a reservation at peak times. I’ve been here twice with friends and bit meals blew me away. I highly recommend the chef’s tasting. You will eat well! The drinks are just as spectacular as the food.

Everything was delicious!

By lookinforelvis |

The atmosphere is dark, hip and loud. There were six of us and we ordered the chiefs tasting for $60.00 per person. You can let them know of any food issues so they can adjust what will be brought to the table.Everything we had was delicious. In the begining of the service I thought that we would not be getting enough food. Many of the dishes our server started us with were very light light.....fishes and such. But right when we were completely full...another dish came out!The meal was ended with short ribs that you place in a lettuce wrap, rice, and some mustard. The ice cream inside the mocha dessert was the best I ever tasted! Our server Ryan was great and made our evening a lot of fun!

Great food, atmosphere and service!!

By westind |

The food, the atmosphere and the service were all wonderful (Ryan was attentive but not pushy and gave us lots of time to explore the menu). We decided not to tempt fate with the tasting menu but ordered and shared a variety of dishes...chicken liver mouse (soon going off the menu), pork gyoza and the double knot roll (ordered it again) were stellar and the sushi was like eating butter...amazing meal on our first night in Philly.

What A Joke

By Salmantino6884 |

This place is an abomination. Although our reservation was at 8:30 pm, we weren’t seated until after 9. In the 30 minutes we waited, it took 15 just to order drinks. While the drinks were inventive and certainly tasty, nothing could possibly save this restaurant from itself. Looking around at the clientele, you can clearly tell that this is one of those “trendy” restaurants that people with terrible taste foolishly mistake for somewhere that is actually good. The menu is bland, food over-salted, and service surly. Once finally seated, we were provided with complimentary dishes to apologize for our late table; two cold raw plates covered in salt and soy sauce that didn’t even wet the palette. Server was knolwedgeable, but also seemed annoyed with the stress of the restaurant and overall menu (which is way too long and nondescriptive). We placed our order, and the dishes came out immediately...one after the other. Some were good, others were OK, others were bad, including the pork belly buns. We specifically asked if the octopus was charred, and we were assured with an affirmative “yes”...it wasn’t. The most flavorful and unique dish was the wasabi yellowtail sushi roll. Even the bathroom in this restaurant annoyed me. Good luck for those who venture.

Great Food and Ambience

By Raybo |

It's such a pleasure to go to a restaurant these days that has great tasting food, served hot, with good service and in a really cool setting. Yes, it wasn't cheap. But given how much money I've wasted on mediocre food at cheaper restaurants it was worth it. We ate downstairs next to the bar - really nice space! A lot less noisy than upstairs. But still good energy and activity.

Scrumptious

By Mindy D |

Delicious food! We did the tasting menu...which might have left us overly full...but with ridiculously happy tongues. Total cost with drinks and tip was $120 pp. Only caution was overly attentive staff, who literally would clear an empty plate within seconds of taking the final bite. Both of us thought it was strange. Leaving it for a minute would have been more relaxing and a better overall experience.

Wow!

By Victoria L |

I picked this restaurant for it's location without knowing much about it. The upstairs was noisy and crowded and it was a bit awkward to check in with the hostess but once we were shown to our table downstairs all was good. Our server, Lauren, suggested the chef's tasting menu ($55 pp) and since we were a party of 7, to minimize having to make too many choices we went with it and were very glad we did. The food was amazing. Some of the stand out dishes were the edamame dumplings and the ribeye robitake. Also the Japanese fried chicken was excellent. We were very full by the end of the 10 courses. We are already thinking about when we'll return.

Happy hour is very happy at Double Knot!

By Alex G |

Double Knot rocks, along with the sister establishment next door Sampan! We went there for happy hour, and it was great value. Sitting at one of the lounge tables, and had food kept coming at steady path: awesome! From rabbit rolls and swordfish meatballs to sashimi and eel entry dish everything was delicious, and well priced too. Kimchi rice is another recommendation. Well executed, with good efficient service to match. Also enjoyed very decent sake, and pleasant atmosphere. All in all, we need more places likes this in Chicago. Will review Sampan next: another gem.

Oh my kase!

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

Sorry someone had to do the Omikase pun....the 10 course chef determined tasting menu: Super fun, diverse, with lots of new flavors to us. The course range from delicate yellowtail sashimi, to rich grilled pork belly, to wagyu dumplings. Not a single plate felt ordinary. Really full in the end and the $60 price felt reasonable. Fun cocktails too and the house sake is definitely worth it.

Good try

By s s |

Wonderful presentation and interesting menu but will not return. Went on recommendation of friend. Did not know I would have to sit on an uncomfortable wooden bench in the dark. Excellent service. Beautiful food. However there was not one dish of the nearly entire menu that I sampled that I would describe a either wonderful tasting or that I would order again. If the food and decor ever match the presentation this will be a real winner. Until that time, my memory of Double Knot will be the martini I was served in a cheap sturdy glass that looked like it came directly from the Dollar Store.

Good but not great, would maybe return not for sure.

By patentesquire |

Alternatively, we may opt for the DK Grill upstairs next time, which seemed a bit more bustling, more like a bistro, and the food items for what I saw when we left, were about triple the size of what we had downstairs at the robatataki. So don't say you did not know. Don't get tied in a double knot by not knowing what I wrote here. Enjoy, it's good but be careful.

Disappointing experience

By KAM |

There were 4 of us in our party, and the 4th was stuck in traffic trying to park the car on a rainy and busy night. The hostess refused to seat us until the 4th person was physically present, and even threatened to give away our table. It was a birthday celebration, and this really put a damper on it. We did not understand why we could not be seated to start ordering so that when the 4th was able to park and join us, things would be ready-we had theater tix, so time was of the essence. I understand protocols and procedures, but there should be exceptions for realistic situations that cannot be avoided. Managers failed to remedy the situation- it was another hostess that in the end seated us before the 4th in the party arrived. And to add insult to the situation, there were 2 empty tables next to us that remained empty for the entire time we were there. We were offered no apologies or anything else for the 45 minute inconvenience. Service after that was just as incompetent.

great experience

food is great, ambience is great, service is top notch. I ate in the downstairs section with a friend for dinner. the food is basically asian fusion. the waiter had to help us because there were so many options to choose from.

To get to this restaurant you must walk through a street level bar to the back and then they take you downstairs. The atmosphere is cool. It's dark and the menu is in tiny font (which I find seems to be the new thing these days!) so it was a little hard to read in dim lighting. We asked the server what she recommended. The plates are very small so she suggested a certain amount for us. We ordered and had the kitchen space out the dishes. However, I wish our server had told us we ordered far too much. By the time the last two dishes arrived, which were the biggest dishes we ordered, we were stuffed and ended up having it packed to go.The food is wonderful. I'd suggest ordering slowly to ensure you don't over order. There's a lot to choose from on the menu.

Wonderful first time

By magivey |

In town for a meeting. This place popped up on Yelp as excellent sushi. Wasn’t disappointed. Started with salmon sashimi special, then crab and shrimp bao and ended with swordfish and chicken thigh robatayaki. Wonderfully fresh and tasty. Friendly bartenders and nIce atmosphere. Will definitely return with friends/colleagues next time.

Went for Happy Hour

By Brittany S |

A colleague and I recently went for HH- this was our first time. I wasnt sure what to expect and I think its hard to give this place a review since its really 2 spaces in one building. I really want to dine downstairs b/c the ambiance is amazing however we just wanted a few drinks an an app. We each had 2 martinis and we split one sushi roll- our bill came to 70 dollars- I WAS SHOCKED...not sure if I'm going to rush back here if that was what our HH cost...I cant speak for dining downstairs but the space in the basement is amazing!

Cool Space, Good Food

By fluffnfold |

My spouse and I dined at Double Knot Downstairs on a Monday evening in late December 2018 (New Year’s Eve). Double Knot Downstairs is open daily for dinner only from 5:00 pm; however, the upstairs coffee bar/cafe opens at 8:00 am to serve breakfast (pastries and coffee), lunch (noodles and banh mi sandwiches), and cocktails and light dinner items (such as buns, dumplings, satay). You can book a spot at Double Knot Downstairs using the online Open Table reservation system. Double Knot opened in February 2016. Its street-level space offers a coffee bar/café-by-day and a drinks bar/lounge in the evenings. We enjoyed drinks (the Jungle Bird Slip) upstairs at the bar while we waited for our table (even though we had a reservation and arrived at the appointed time). Because the hostess did not offer to ferry our drinks downstairs, it was difficult to manage the long dim staircase with drink in one hand, winter coat in the other, with patrons coming up from the basement at the same time. (There is a coat check downstairs, but that was too little, too late.) Double Knot Downstairs is a hidden Japanese izakaya that offers an open kitchen with some guest seating at the L-shaped counter, a drinks bar/lounge area in the rear, and cozy tables (and a few semi-circular booths) in the main dining space. The atmosphere is dim, unaided by the brick and concrete. Wood and scrimshaw-like wall art give the restaurant a nautical/Asian feel. Note that not only is the basement accessed by a long steep staircase, the basement floor itself has different levels (some a step up from others), with a labyrinth feel to the various rooms, so this restaurant may not be the best choice for those with mobility challenges. Double Knot Downstairs serves Japanese cuisine (including sushi), but with many non-raw, not cold selections. (We are sushi fans, and we did enjoy some crudo/sashimi on this visit, but our main goal was to try some of the many interesting hot options.) The menu is large, so in order to try lots of dishes, we participated in the 10 item/course $60 per person tasting menu. (Guests choose one dish from each category of the menu, including hot, cold, sashimi, robotayaki, sushi roll, crispy, meat, fish, and sides). We took our server’s suggestions and ordered most his favorite dishes; nearly all of them were hits (hamachi, yellowtail, shrimp tempura roll, pork jowl, hanger steak, lazy chicken buns, shrimp tacos, lobster-fried rice, sea bass served atop crisp peas and garnished with pea tendrils, plus a mochi [vanilla chocolate chip] for dessert). However, even though we were aware that the restaurant serves tapas-style as items are ready, the dishes arrived so quickly in succession and so many at the same time that our New Year’s Eve dinner was over in little more than an hour. We prefer to linger over our meals, particularly on a special night, so that was our main disappointment with Double Knot. Our secondary moment of discontent was that after our server delivered our mochi together with our bill (which we didn’t ask for), he seemed to forget about us. If the restaurant had needed our spots at the counter for new customers, we think that he would have asked us to move. Instead, our server seemed to ignore us when we wanted to order another round or two of drinks. We give our dinner a solid B – the food was good, the menu was expansive, and the atmosphere was fun, but it is hard to disregard the small service issues.

Everyone can find something

By jonfweber |

Everyone can find something they love. My daughter, raved about the food. Robotayaki, hanger steak and chef’s choice sashimi were amazing. I eat in great sushi restaurants in NYC all the time and would rate Double Knot very highly against them.

Terrific dinner

By akelly1470 |

Had a dinner here while in Philadelphia for a conference. Would highly recommend. We sat downstairs and did the chefs omakase menu - can’t say enough about it. It was so good and incredibly reasonable priced for the quality. Will be back for sure whenever my travels bring me to philly.

Basement Asian Fusion Restaurant

By alviemsw |

The three of us sat uncomfortably at a table better-suited for two. The wait staff were all friendly. The tasting menu ($55 per person) was fine. The two most memorable items at dinner were the house-made mustard and Double Knot signature cocktail, which involved dried cloves, cinnamon bark, and a blow torch (the table next to us ordered it). Drinks are not part of the tasting menu. Our dinner was generally good. It's a very popular place, and it seems to be important to have reservations.

Amazing Happy Hour!

By ebbief |

We went for happy hour and wound up sampling almost everything on their menu, food was fun, innovative and delicious and the drinks didn't disappoint either! The downstairs bar is a bit small, so try to go early and snag seats at the bar.

Get there before 4PM happy hour

By Karen J |

Sign is small in front. Arrived at 3:30 on a Friday. Waited until 4 to take advantage of happy hour small plates: various sushi rolls, brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze, albacore, mushroom dumplings... only thing that lacked some flavor was broccoli. Very reasonable prices. Gets very busy quickly and service can be slow. Would definitely return. BTW, there is a sushi restaurant that opens in the basement at 5. Looks very hip but the tables are close together.

Amazing, but BEWARE

By Deanna B |

First time visited downstairs for dinner and had the tasting menu. $55 each with up-charges for certain items which were well worth the cost. Knowledgeable staff, excellent suggestions and amazing drinks. Last Wednesday went for lunch. $7, excellent meal. It was around 2 in the afternoon, I took a day off in the middle of the week and was taking a bus, so decided to have a shot of tequila before we left. READY - $17.60. Yes, I said SEVENTEEN DOLLARS AND SIXTY CENTS. Measured using the standard shot and poured into a rocks glass. Covered the bottom at least. I was too stunned to laugh and give it back. Patron yes, $18 for a sip? Never have I ever . . .

Absolutely fabulous

By Sohana Lifestyle Apartments |

I have been two times to the Double Knot before. Make sure you reserve also during the week. We were sitting at the bar, the waitress explained us the menu. The food is delicious and the flavors are amazing. Overall it is not cheap but fully worth the price, we paid for 15-17 small plates, 5 cocktails and 1 beer including gratuity, 240$. The atmosphere is really cool, you feel like in an old torture chamber :) Worth to visit👍

Excellent!

By Heather F |

This was such an excellent restaurant...the decor, the service, the drinks, the food...everything! The robatayaki are so unique and delicious! We ended up ordering second servings of some. Our favorite was the ribeye scallion, melts in your mouth.

Amazing Food

I visited here on my own on a business trip. Service was very helpful and welcoming. I had the tasting menu and let the chef decide for me. Food was amazing, wonderful flavours. To be recommend.

Definate Not a Square Knot!

By Barry G |

A wonderful restaurant experience. We visited for a family birthday celebration, and it was great. We have eaten at sister restaurant Sanpan several times but this sister is NOT the baby sister. We had small plates which were all great! Not an ok one in the bunch. The beef skewers, lobster claw, tuna on crispy cracker to name a few. The waiter guided us as to how many to order and was right on. Great Place to Celebrate! B

Pretty Rad | Pretty Weird

By scottmellin |

Ok. It’s mid-Covid. Philly looks like the apocalypse from the Will Smith film. But the town is trying super hard to keep it together. The food here is amazing on the menu, and pretty good in reality. Dishes are not consistent in quality from plate to plate. But the service is so good and the ambiance on a weird point, it’s deserving a 4/5. We sat on the street. The heat from the cars was unimaginable and I’m sure no one from the staff thought about this. The combination of the noise, heat and exhaust (semi tractors included) was not the desired ambiance. But it did create an energy, that overall the city currently needs...

Amaaaaazing

By Sohana Lifestyle Apartments |

Simply amazing food, nice staff and a cool "torture chamber" atmosphere... price for 2 people 100$, and we were soooo full afterwards. I recommend to try it as soon as possible!

Plunge into the corners of this Japanese Izakaya

By Philippe A |

Double knot is not for traditionalists. You cross a normal-looking bar, take the door at the back and then go down one floor to a large space broken up in little areas. It's dark and donjon-like, but it's pleasant, fun and oddly welcoming. You can find a variety of seating arrangements. The food is excellent, from the sushi and sashimi, the robata grill, to the various small plates. Everybody will find something to like and everything tastes great. The overall feeling is one of discovery and contentment and the value is excellent.

5 star duck buns

By Parker Thomas |

Love this place as regular stop in Philadelphia. The menu is incredible and everything on the menu is spectacular. BUT the duck scrapple duck buns are worth a double order each and every time.

Delicious food and nice ambience

By Mina50952 |

We went here for dinner during their happy hour since their restaurant on the lower floor was fully booked. We had to wait 10 min before We were seated. The appetizers and food were diverse and all tasted great and the prices very reasonable: $5- $6 for a drink or an order of food. The service was excellent. Would go back to try their set menu downstairs.

Awesome

By Icecreamnea |

Visited Double Knot for the first time a week ago! I was very pleased with everything. The food was amazing & our waitress Amy was even better. Everything she suggested was GREAT! I would definitely go again.

Amazing - like going to a speakeasy

By HudsonDV |

I had only been here for lunch and finally had dinner at Double Knot. Reservations a MUST. Anyway, one is led downstairs to the restaurant. I felt like we were walking in a cave like atmosphere. It was a bit on the dark side (lighting only) and it all was worth it. The food is just amazing. We had the chef's tasting menu. I forgot the price per person. You get a lot of food and ALL DELICIOUS.

Inviting & Cozy

By PhillyShaney |

I am in LOVE with Double Knot in 2017! I am excited about writing this review, when I think of places to meet friends, Happy Hour or just somewhere cool to go - Double Knot has been at the forefront of my thoughts and recommendations to others as well. I am a TOTAL and complete fan - I especially enjoy Happy Hour - you gotta get there early, because there are other SUPER FANS like me - so they know the deal! The HH menu is cheap and the food is superior! I always recommend the Kim Chi Fried Rice - it will Knock you Out! The sushi rocks too!! I can go on and on about practically every dish and the drink menu hits all the high points too! So my last note - stop reading and get to Double Knot if you haven't already been!

Fun Romantic Spot for a couple or couples.

By Chad L |

My wife and I had an excellent meal here. Food is served Tapas Style, and you have the opportunity to try many tasty dishes and not break the bank. They have interesting drinks, and the ambience was fantastic! The service is excellent, and you feel like you are in a really nice speakeasy. Don't be fooled if you hear that it is a Japanese restaurant. There are more dishes to try that are NOT Japanese than are, but there is still Sushi and other Japanese dishes. If you don't like Japanese food, you will still find PLENTY of choices to choose from. The Menu is extensive, but fun to read and order. The waitstaff will guide you through ordering. I recommend the chef's tasting if you are hungry - at $55/head, you get to choose approx. 10 Tapas dishes. The only thing that I can possibly think to improve our experience was to have a choice of chocolate for dessert. Incidentally, the upstairs is called Sampan, and they have one of the BEST happy hours for food and drink that a suburbanite like me has found in the city!

Outstanding!

By mikseebs |

What a great spot. The food, ambiance and service were all fantastic. Try the chefs tasting menu (you get to pick your items). It’s a perfect way to sample the menu. Loved it.

Great Spot for a Special Occasion

By Short Girl Travels |

Probably one of the best meals I've had since moving to Philadelphia! We had the upgraded 10-dish tasting menu plus drinks (including splitting a sake flight). While it was a bit pricey (over $300 after tip), its definitely worth the splurge for a special occasion!

Great place for date night

By dw33dvw |

Was a great atmosphere downstairs and service was awesome. The food everything was very good and came out in a reasonable time. Prefect date night place.

So Delicious!

By ShRhonda T |

2nd time here and it did not disappoint. Happy hour is busy but worth the wait. Wyatt at the bar was very knowledgeable about the menu items and took very good care of me. Favorite item right now is the Tuna rice cracker... Its a Deconstructed spicy tuna roll with flare!

More than just amazing food An experience hard to forget Ambience, service and a large paradise of taste

By Fernando L |

Absolutely a must Ambience service drinks and food are just magnificent Congrats on the bartender he is an artisan Amber is great and a memorable dinner We will come back for sure

One of the best In Philly

By pyatachok |

The first visit to DK was VERY impressive. We were downstairs where the noise level is lower (thanks God and owners). AMBIANCE: kind of reminding a bottom of the old submarine/ship (which explains the name of the restaurant), but in spite of all this rustic weirdness around us we felt comfortable and somewhat cozy. SERVICE: VERY efficient, attentive and nice. FOOD: Had $55 p/p tasting menu. This is a great way for introduction to every section of the menu as well as a great value, but we would appreciate if were given the right to chose desserts too as they let you chose from all the other sections. The taste of the food is 90% amazingly delicious, outstanding in point of creativity, perfection in point of execution. Highlights: Sea Bass, Sapporo Chicken, Tempura Cheese Curds, Edamame Dumplings, KING OYSTER MUSHROOM. VALUE: very good for the experience received. CONCLUSION: Come back to Philly asap so we could taste some more and repeat this delight experience again.

Star of Philadelphia's Sushi Scene

By Lola |

Double Knot is the star of Philadelphia's asian-fusion and sushi scene. The managers, server, and chefs are incredibly kind and always willing to elevate your experience and the food is INCREDIBLE!! The fish is very fresh and the flavor profiles of dishes featured throughout the menu are so unique and always satisfying. Could not recommend Double Knot more.

Astonishingly inhospitable; food inconsistent

By Katherine L |

We returned for a second go at the tasting menu, which we had enjoyed before. This time, most of the food was good (except for the last course, a bizarre Brussels sprouts concoction tasting of salty burnt vinegar) and some was excellent (notably the grilled baby lamb chops and the salmon skewers). But the service left us with a very bad taste in our mouths. We had to tell our server three times not to hurtle the courses at us as if we were in a race. And then at the end, as we were enjoying the intense postprandial conversations to which our meal had brought us, we were interrupted and asked to leave as others were waiting. We get the idea of table turnover, but a restaurant that received from us $450 for a multi-course tasting menu should surely expect us to take a little time to savor it, rather than hustle us out with our dinner practically still in our throat. We do not plan to return. In rating the food, below, we called it "average." That is itself an average - a few were excellent, one was terrible, some were pretty good. Overall, for the price we expected much better quality.

Mind blowing food!

By Adam D |

The food here is an experience like nothing I have ever had. The sushi rice is warm, the slow cooked meat melts in your mouth, and the hand crafted cocktails are very creative. This is a must go when in Philly!

Amazing Birthday Tasting!

By 2010_SS |

YUM!!! We've already been here more than a couple times, and absolutely love it. This time, for my bday, ... we did the Chef's Tasting Menu... 1 item from 10 categories on a super menu. The Gyoza, as usual... never fail to blow me away... Ribeye Scallion Skewers are NOT to be missed... everything was exceptional as always. Wonderful atmosphere, (usually) great service... and again... a spectacular menu and array of Modern Japanese style Tapas.

Asian for you

By Ellensday |

Double knot has 3 separate restaurants in one. In the basement, where we ate it was awesome, we had amazing food, the food was a 10, the service was not quite as special. Upstairs there was a more informal room and another room was a bar. The upstairs was very lively, the bottom more formal

Superb chef's tasting

By Katherine L |

We loved the food, every last wonderful bite of it (except the ice cream, which three out of four of us loved; the rest was unanimous raves). The darkness surprised at first, and then became part of the experience -- not seeing well helped us focus on flavors. We hope to return on our next trip to Philadelphia.

Great bartenders great happy hour

Went on a Monday and it was jumping. Upstairs for a nice selection of food choices . Down stairs sushi bar. Also another Bar there nice guy Kevin wotrking served us

Cool place! Ask to be seated downstairs!

By Gar1712 |

Had the Toro and spicy tuna roll! I've had toro that was fresher. Very cool atmosphere. Visited on a Tuesday. Downstairs is dark with lots of candles. Want to try something different and like sushi? This is it.

Wow-wow-wow!

By Robert S |

Why have I waited so long to make a reservation and dine in what is the best sushi restaurant I have been to in Philadelphia! The environment is industrial dark sexy. The service is perfect but the food was outstanding! We enjoyed wonderful and interesting sashimi items, poke inspired fish creations and a whole bronzino perfectly flash fried with rice and picketed vegetables. The wine list was thoughtful and offered multiple price points. I will be back-soon, frequently and happily!

Wwwwaaayyyy overrated

By itinerary_queen_pa |

Went on Tues night with 4 others. The downstairs is very dark (more than intimate). The lights brightened up for a brief minute to reveal the reality of being in a nearly finished quite beatup basement. If the lights were always up, no one would go. The restroom was so dark that had I not used my flashlight, I would not have realize how grossly dirty it was nor that the seat was raised on the toilet (unisex of course). The server was quite pleasant but "forgot" our one person's allergy and the first food served contained her allergen that he did not let be known (but was evident on taste and confirmed by our server with apologies). For my $72 for 1/5 of the bill, I got 2 glasses of wine, 1 small lamb chop, 1 mini fish taco, 1 slider duck scrapple, 1 2in slice skirt steak skewer, 1 prawn, 2 nickel-size slices of cucumber, 1 chicken wing, 2 half-nuggets of chicken, 1 very small dumpling, and 1/3 of a deck of card size chocolate dessert. Yes, I enjoyed each delicious bite. But for $72 I can get a full amazing meal in Philly in a place where they don't need to hide the reality.

Great spot for Brunch

By Loic V |

Did a quick search on a Saturday morning for a place serving breakfast not too far from our hotel. You can barely see the name of the place on the door. As soon as you enter the space you already know the place is good to be good, friendly staff was there to great you, brunch was not quite ready yet and they told us to take a seat and drink a coffee until the buffet would be ready. On Saturday and Sunday they are serving a beautiful brunch at 10 am for $18. The food presentation was exceptional and everything was very good, from the Pho station to the brunch staples. I would definitely come back to this place on my next trip to philly and also try there evening sushi spot downstairs. A real gem to go to...............

Excellent birthday dinner

By WebsterCook |

We opted for the chef’s tasting menu, and loved every dish. Highlights were the quail, rib eye skewers, and the big eye tuna double knot rolls. Our server was excellent, and even replaced my cocktail when I told her I preferred my first one. Highly recommended.

Once a favorite

By stb3 |

Last night my husband and I decided to bring my 12 year old daughter and a friend to Double Knot to celebrate her birthday. We had a 7:30 reservation. Arrived on time. We were looking forward to sharing one of our favorite restaurants with my daughter on this special occasion- lamb chops are her favorite and she heard me talk about Double Knot's lamb chops before. She wanted to try them. We are all adventurous eaters and love food! Well, they didn't honor our 7:30 reservation and we weren't seated until 8pm. So, a whole half hour was spent standing at the upstairs BAR with two 12 year olds...who were starving. I guess we were all starving at this point. They sent free edamame dumplings and cheese croquets as an apology. So it looked good from then, until the food started arriving. If I could take a guess, I would say the head chef was on vacation last night (or at least, I hope he was!) Now, this was our 4th time eating at Double Knot, so we know what the food should taste like! It was completely off, just off! I am so disappointed. The meats were so saturated and soaked with sauce, the basic element of taste was completely gone. My favorite lamb chops were nothing like they had been in the past, and they also came out completely raw- as in red, tough, no flavor, impossible to bite into. The tuna toast was missing flavor (another past favorite) the pastrami bao bun tasted like shredded cardboard dipped in oil. The fried chicken had no sauce on the plate, the rib eye was soaked in fat and flavorless, the salmon was burned and had a weird chemical flavor. One disappointment after the other arrived at our table. The only thing that came out right were the Brussels sprouts. So majorly disappointed! We left Double Knot quite puzzled. The past quality wasn't there at all!! Because of the seating delay, we were a half hour late for our dessert reservation and they gave our reservation away and were forced to wait again for a table to have cake on my daughter's birthday. Total disaster. Not at all happy with Double Knot's management or food. Big disappointment. Shame on you.

Birthday dinner

By tina |

We did the chef tasting menu for a birthday and it was amazing! I forgot what some of the dishes were, but everything was delicious! I really enjoyed all the food and the service was awesome! Lily was super nice to us! They gave us the best spot in the house and we really enjoyed ourselves! We definitely would come back for more!

Double Knot Philladelphia

By Noel R |

Philadelphia gave me one of my best culinary experiences of my life. My friend and I had the 10 course tasting menu, we requested it more on the "light-side" meaning the less fried dishes the better. It was all amazing every bite of every plate was spectacular. I particularly loved the dumpling soup on truffle broth... sometging of that sort. The mixed drinks are phenomenal too. Double knot is a must when in Philly.

another fine dinner at Double Knot

By William H |

Always happy to return here when I'm in Philly. We had: lazy chicken bao, pan-fried but light with a slight kick edamame dumplings with truffle oil salmon and yellowtail sashimi, both excellent enoki bacon brussels sprouts, light and crunchy, not oily black cod fried rice (nice but could probably use a little more seasoning) rib eye scallion maitaki mushroom Most were very tasty and worth revisiting.

Ridiculously SLOW SERVICE!

By WFSCDGA |

My wife and I stopped here for a drink when we first arrived in Philly. First impressions were good as this is a very quaint place and our young lady server was very friendly and welcoming. However, it took forever to get ONE DRINK. To make matters worse, ten minutes after we ordered our drinks we were told that they were out of the wine my wife ordered which was one of the “specials” The final insult was when we had to chase down the server just to get the bill which really annoys me.

Tasty Cocktails! Relaxed Happy Hour

By Kirsten E |

Went for a few cocktails on a Friday night. Bartenders were excellent. Made fine drinks, good recommendations and were friendly and quick. Next time I'll try the food. Lots of people were getting really appetizing looking happy hour specials. They all seemed happy. Although the place was packed, it seemed quiet and relaxed. Great place to enjoy a cocktail and conversation.

Seriously good.

By Sunny |

We chose to do a blind chef's tasting menu and had one of the best meals of our lives. Every dish was amazing, service was impeccable, atmosphere was very cool, cocktails were memorable, price was stupid good for the value and experience we received. We will definitely be back if we're in Philadelphia again.

Best basement dining ever!

By Paul S |

We had enjoyed a sampling of their craft cocktails on earlier visits but on this visit we took advantage of their full menu offerings. With four of us sharing we were able to work in most sections of the menu. All excellent. Great atmosphere for a basement.

5+

Fantastic food and service. The Bao Buns are simply amazing. Pork potstickers were excellent and the service was great. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in Philadelphia!

My fav in Philly

By busybee2775 |

My go to in Philly. Fun, a bit quirky, great food and drinks and located on a fun stretch. Small plates and sushi provide for delicious experience.

Unique Dinning Experience

By megabru |

The food was very good, but what set this dinner apart was the eclectic downstairs dinning room. Food range from a fine selection of sushi & sashimi, small plates, and entrees all well prepared and tasty. I loved the robatayaki, especially the pork jowls, the kobe beef, and maitaki mushrooms. There were several excellent selections of wine by the glass and Japanese brews. Our server was extremely helpful in helping us to navigate the menu and offered several spot on suggestions. Heading down the stairs to the basement, one had no idea what to expect, but the dark industrial room with a tasting counter and several unique decorations was unexpected. It was both intimate, yet gave off a communal vibe. The large copper topped table in an elevated corner that we sat at gave ample opportunity to observe the entire room.

Exceeded expectations

By Tina A |

We just had the best dinner! We got the chefs tasting menu and we let the chef pick most of the courses. We loved the double knot sushi, yellowtail, Japanese scallops, tuna rice cracker, sea bass and mochi. Wow, so good! And superb service as well.

Great Bar

By simmie17 |

We had drinks here while waiting for our AlpenRose reservation. Our server was super nice. The drinks were very good as well.

Tasting Menu was disappointing

By Siskel E |

The ambiance was really chic. I ordered the tasting menu and only really enjoyed 2 of the dishes that were brought out - the best being the edamame dumplings. The rest were edible but average.

Wow!

By GReyMaiden |

What a place! Ate here tonight on the recommendation of a colleague and was quite simply blown away. Double Knot is not easy to spot as the food is in the basement. A reservation is a must, as this place is not huge. Food is Sushi fusion with a truly superb menu. Service truly excellent and a good selection of drinks. If I get back to Phili this place is a must return venue.

Amazing food and great service!

By CBAmom |

Went with our son and his wife and made reservations the day before. We were able to obtain reservations at 10:15pm. A little late for my liking, but wanted to try this restaurants based on friend’s reviews. Arrived on time, yet had to wait another 20 plus minutes to be seated. The upstairs bar/lounge area was full of customers and had a nice vibe. We were lead downstairs to the cellar/dining area. The entire area is lit mostly by candlelight! A little difficult to read the menu, etc. We were seated in a middle area table with two seats and one wooden bench on the opposite side — a little uncomforable for dining a couple of hours. Our waiter, Dustin, was very polished and extremely helpful. He reviewed the menu with us and gave wonderful recommendations. We picked a few items and asked him to “fill in the blanks” with his favorites. We were exremely happy — so much so that we reordered some of them!! The food was amazing! Each plate had a distinct flavor and prepared in a beautifully presented way. Just enough flavor to enjoy the dish and nothing was overwhelming. We had samplings from all across the menu, so I can only recommend you do the same!! The service was perfect — multiple servers that knew exactly when to place our plates. They did so with a description of each plate each time. (Very helpful when you’re ordering multiple items throughtout the evening.) Definitely will be back to dine!

Great Sushi

By D_v_D_USA |

I have been to this place a couple of times and the quality of the sushi is always top notch. The lamb options also are really good.

Great Evening

By 1KRP |

I had a great meal sitting at the bar. The Octopus Carpaccio was great starter, tender morsels in a very flavorful dressing. The Yellowtail Sashimi was outstanding. The Duck Scrapple Bao Bun was one of the tastiest, most decadent Buns I've had in a long time --would come back just for a repeat of this dish. Good Unagi-Eel Sauce roll. Enjoyed everything with a young Sake recommended by the friendly bartenders. Very enjoyable.

Good, but not as good as sampan next door

By 206xs |

It was a really nice night out with the wife, we had the chef menu. More courses but the food is not as exciting as the place next door. Also our cost was almost double

Consistently Good

By pookala |

Double Knot is like a secret hideaway, a retreat from the hustle and bustle of 13th St. you pass through a busy bar area to the host station (Reservations are definitely encouraged during peak hours) And descend a flight of dimly lit steps to the subterranean dining area. It’s a romantic interesting space, assertive ninja dungeon French castle vampire movie set. (Really!) Which makes it the perfect place for a date, a night out with friends or even a larger celebration party of 8 to 10 guests. I’ve eaten here many times since my last review and the thing that sticks out most in my mind is the consistency and service and food quality. I have never had a bad meal here. Period. Full Stop. If you’re considering double knot I would definitely put it on your list it’s a worthy contender for your dining dollars. Since I usually eat here with a mixed group of carnivores and vegetarians we usually order heavily on the vegetables. Recommend the edamame, hearts of palm, grilled asparagus, & the Brussels sprouts. Other favorite dishes include the black cod rice and the Japanese chicken wings. Out of the limited dessert menu the only offering I personally don’t like is the cotton cheesecake. The sesame millefeuille is wonderful as is the strawberry parfait. Lastly, if you like bourbon drinks, I strongly recommend their signature cocktail for double knot. It’s literally a smoking version of a Manhattan made with two Kinds of whiskeys and two vermouths. Price per person Ruben you about $60-$75 depending upon alcohol consumption.

Wonderful sushi quality, service can be better

Sushi has become so common and many places pile so many flavors together that you really can't assess the quality. -sushi quality among the best in Philadelphia. -Noise level fine downstairs , upstairs very loud. -Servers seem to pay attention to some VIPs much more. -A very good variety of appetizers and plates. -Presentation of dishes good. -Cost was worth the sushi quality

Happy Hour at the Double Knot Philadelphia

By DiTravelBug |

Great spot and friendly service for happy hour. Went with my 18-year old daughter. Drinks: lemonade and The Tautline Hitch (vodka, ringo, lime and ginger). Food: Crispy Brussels sprouts (delicious and a must to have), kim chee fried rice, salmon scallion, spicy tuna rolls.

Favorite Food in Philly

Alliteration aside, Double Knot is the kind of place you leave your wife and kids for. With a dark, chic, like you just stepped into a steampunk Japanese teahouse interior, you may think, "all style, no substance." But oh no, she's got substance in the form of a sexy 10 course Omakase tasting menu with each playful fusion dish twirling your taste buds through the robatayaki, sashimi creases of her kitchen. Apologize to your family and go sign the lease on that one-bedroom apartment, the cheap one that smelled like beer and was next to the college, because you just filled for divorce and proposed to a restaurant. Note: Do not leave your family for a building, they are not sentient and as far as I know are incapable of feeling complex emotions like love. Also note: The food is incredible and you can order a la carte, but I highly recommend getting the chef's tasting. It's not unreasonably priced and will give you some great highlights.

Amazing

The best restaurant in center city. Period. The downstairs room is intimate and feels removed from the city. The cocktails -especially the Double Knot- are exceptional. Food highlights include: edamame dumplings, cod fried rice, short ribs, foie gras sushi roll. All sushi is unbelievably fresh and impeccably prepared. Not to be missed. Plan ahead f you are visiting.

The Philly Food Revolution Will Be Consumed

If you haven't been to the city or out and about in the city, you're missing out. The Philly restaurant scene continues to evolve. Think food for food's sake, in every dimension and capacity you can imagine. There is originality seemingly everywhere. Double Knot continues that adventure. Your food tastes, refined or otherwise are morphed into Alice in the Looking Glass. What culinary feats of inventiveness awaits? Dive in you'll see. The Double Knot makes clever use of recaptured Center City space. Upon immediate entrance, you step into the low soft lights of an antiquated library and beyond that is the restaurant and bar; chic, elegant, dimly lit and inviting. Feels like a whisper and a personal invitation to relax, take it in and slow down. Take advantage of the ample drink offerings and small plates upstairs in this romantic lounge-esque environ. The upstairs is a tough place to leave if you're having dinner (which will occur downstairs) but we did. The space upstairs you must understand is foreplay pure and simple. The downstairs space (where you indulge) has a speakeasy feel, as if you have been let in on a secret and you have. Descend into the darkness and be prepared to entertained by Asian fusion at it's best. If you pace yourself, you will be entertained, satiated and your hunger for more realized. We tried the Chef Tasting, which combined ten different dishes, each attempting to one up it's sibling. Swordfish Meatballs, Duck Scrapple and a Pork Belly that is blush worthy. It's succulent, savory and decadent. There were no misses, some offerings were more exciting than others but there was never a miss. Great romantic place for couples, even better with a small crowd of friends, but make them good friends as you don't want to enjoy this space with just anyone as this not a just bring anyone type place. The decor affords and offers that kind of intimacy. The staff is knowledgeable, efficient and personable. The dining area is dark walled and low lit to let you dine in your subconscious, nocturnal foody mind. In all it feels like a sultry bacchanalian feast and rest assured, it is.

Delicious!

Went here for a Monday happy hour and we were not disappointed. Wonderful and eclectic ambience and decor, and the happy hour specials were excellent. We sampled several dishes and one dish they brought was better than the next. The crispy Brussels sprouts and pork buns were fantastic. Our waiter was absolutely outstanding - if you are fortunate enough to have Ryan serving you, you will be well cared for indeed! We will absolutely be back!

Seven buck lunch FTW

Checked out Double Knot on a lunch break. For $7 you can get a customized salad/noodle/rice bowl with your protein of choice. They use a Asian inspired light rice wine dressing that is sweet and zesty. Cool vibe inside with desserts and cocktails if you choose too. Will definitely be back!

More of a Single Knot than a double knot

Expectations for this birthday dinner were high because of the reputation and the difficulty in securing a reservation. We walked through the busy bar area, down the stairs and through the very busy and very dimly lit dining room to our table. And so our disappointment began. Tables in our area were two-tops situated along a banquette on one side and movable chairs on the other. It appeared that this area was better suited to two 4-tops rather than a 4-top and two 2-tops. Our table was 12 inches from the 4-top and only 1 inch from the two-top. I felt as though we were between a rock and a hard place. The four people to my right were having a good time and were a bit loud. The people to my left were stridently discussing conscious uncoupling. One inch was not nearly far enough away for my husband and I to have any kind of conversation. When the waitress tended to the 4-top her rear end was either in my husband's face or his food. The room was so dark it was impossible to read the menu without using a cellphone flashlight. Admittedly, we were both cranky at this point. Drinks were ordered which turned out to be quite good. We opted for the chef's tasting menu. The first several items were good (fish items) but they all tasted the same. The sushi roll had no taste. From this point on the food improved greatly and we were happy. The hanger steak was delicious - a highlight - but with one downside. We were warned that the chef likes to cook the steak medium rare which is fine for us, but this was closer to raw than rare in the center and thick enough to be a very tasty but chewy piece of meat. The mochi dessert was delicious and refreshing - the perfect ending. The meal was a draw - some disappointing elements and some very good elements. We probably won't come back for another dinner even though the food could/would be delicious. It just isn't worth it to eat in the dark with strangers sitting mere inches away from my table and my conversation. I guess we will consciously uncouple from this restaurant.

Fun date-night spot

Menu is large and varied with many small plates that are easy to share. The server offered to explain the menu and ordering process--take your server up on this your first time. The really good: ceviche, duck scrapple bao, kobe beef robatayaki, asparagus bacon robatayaki. The good: chicken thigh robatayaki, prawn robatayaki, lover's knot cocktail (very sweet). The meh: japanese fried chicken and pork gyoza. There was nothing that was bad; the meh dishes just paled in comparison to the really good offerings. Our server was personable and helpful throughout. Bussers are discrete and frequent which is good thing as the dishes come out of the kitchen as they are finished, not all together. The downstairs dining rooms feels a bit speakeasy-esque when you are lead down the dark stairs into the dark, bustling rooms. Tables are very closely spaced and the entire space is quite dark; we moved the table candle closer to read the menu and I saw two other patrons use their cellphone flashlights. The entire place gives off a cool, trendy vibe. It was a fun option for our date night and felt special. The menu has a lot gluten free offerings and clearly demarcates which options cannot be prepared gluten free. I've already recommended Double Knot to a friend and will do so again.

Incompetence meets arrogance

By Javad |

I took a group of important friends to this restaurant. It was one of the worst experiences I had. The manager, who obviously does not belong to hospitality sector, and the hostess would not add a single chair to our table to accommodate a friend who had decided to join us and surprise us. They had numerous empty chairs!! They were arrogant and inhospitable. We ended leaving the place and going across the way to another (and much better) resturant. This was my third time in the restaurant and each time the service has been getting worse. I highly recommend you think of much better sushi places in the city. The place is dark, dingy, expensive and obviously with terrible management. Never going there again.
