Best Chinese in PDX

By mrseverett |

This was the best & most authentic Chinese food I've ever had in Portland. The place was packed, so the service was understandable slower but very friendly. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back

I'm glad they are still there

By swadmin |

Very excited to visit Portland after the pandemic. The downtown is definitely a quite different place now and made me worried if my favorite Chinese restaurant is still there. Very happy to find out they are still in business and the quality is as good as it used to be.

Best Chinese Food

By Robert P |

This was a very pleasant surprise. Stopped in got lunch and I noticed the huge crowd so I suspected I was in for a special treat. The food was amazing and they have very large portions guaranteed to fill you up.

Good enough

By Phogotaboutit |

It is always exciting when a new Chinese restaurant comes into town. We were too exhausted from the work week to go out, so we ordered 10 dishes from the Duck House for pick up. There were just the three of us, but we had to see if this may be our "to go to" restaurant. Of the 10 dishes, we liked the veggie egg rolls, dried cooked green beans, fish filet with basil, and the best was chicken wings hot & spicy dried pot. The food was well seasoned, & unlike other places, it was not salty. The hot & sour soup had an unusual flavor so we can't decide whether to like or dislike it; the much acclaimed beef rolls from previous reviews were way too salty; the sesame chicken, Dan Dan noodle, seafood fried rice, prawn & squid with garlic sauce were all just OK. We will probably eat there next time in order to try out the crab & fish dishes. But 4 out of 10 is a good enough place to go to in a pinch. The staff was very nice and helpful.

Very good fresh quality food

By RosyRJ |

The food here is tasty and plentiful. We had a late lunch here that was very satisfying. We ordered pork steamed buns which were tasty, egg flower soup which was excellent (to be honest, this is the first restaurant soup that was not a bowl of salt!), egg rolls, broccoli chicken, and two types of chow mein. Even the fortune cookies were fresh and the perfect flavor. We would come back here again if we were in the area.

Portland magazine recommendation????

By Lois M |

We went there after reading about this restaurant in the Portland magazine. We ordered the dishes recommended in the magazine. Most were not what the magazine lead us to believe. The beef rolls were very!!! Dry. The pan fried buns were ok but not exceptional. The 3 ingredients pot stickers were very good. The lamb with cilantro was fabulous. Service was just ok.

Authentic and good

By foodie_bob |

This place was suggested to us and we were glad that we went. I checked Yelp and noticed they were there so we put our name on the list before heading over. Good thing as the place was pretty busy (including lots of students too). Everything is fresh and made to order so it can take a few minutes for the items to get cooked. We started with an order of their soup dumplings (Pork Xiao Long Bao) which were very good; Szechuan Pork wonton w/chilli oil (where were just OK) and stir-fried eggplant & green beans which was very good. Others ordered the pot stickers and those looked really good. The problem was 8 per order and it was too much for the 2 of us. If they had 1/2 orders I certainly would have given them a try. They didn't have brown rice. They do have lunch specials which came with soup. They also make the dumplings fresh in house as I saw them in the kitchen working on my way to the rest room. This place was very good and certainly worth a try if you are in the area.

Classis Chinese Food served Hot, Fresh and Fast

By kumtux |

This is a very popular Chinese restaurant near Portland State University that has a versatile menu so that you can stop by for drinks and dim sum or a classic full-course meal. The place is busy with very fast and efficient staff cleaning and prepping tables, taking orders and serving food like a frenetic ballet. The food is very good, well prepared in generous servings. The menu is huge, but oddly does not include its namesake duck! Drinks include both domestic and Asian beers.

So Good

By Frank V |

Great for groups, families, or couples. Extensive menu with something for everyone, and more. The soup dumplings are sublime; the green beans and eggplant just as delicious; mandarin chicken spicy and crispy. Everything looked, smelled and tasted really good. Affordable, tasty, worth the wait!

Very Americanized Chinese

By Stuart T |

Disappointing. Went for Thursday lunch. Was quite busy with what appeared to be a local crowd. Ordered Szechuan beef noodle and General Tso’s chicken. Noodle serving was quite generous, but the only flavors I could discern were red chili flakes and garlic; no hearty broth flavor of meat or vegetables. About a tablespoon of ground beef mixed in. Chicken was more like a sweet and sour sauce with triple-extra sugar, and breading was too thick. I would call this style of cooking American-Chinese - only resembles Chinese food visually, not taste-wise. Service was adequate; perfunctory and not particularly warm or welcoming. Won’t be going back. Can’t fathom the positive reviews for this place, but to each his every…..

Great! Delicious! Don't miss it!

We were there for Christmas Eve. Great food and nicely prepared and presented. A great time spent together eating! We had steam bun, green bean, fried noodles, fried

Green Bean Chicken

By travel4scuba |

I have been going to Portland for a long time and this was a real treat. I went for the soup dumplings. I had been looking for somewhere that did the traditional steamed dumplings. They were excellent but the food I saw others getting made me come back a different night to try it out. I asked for a recommendation from the bar tender. Green bean chicken, never heard of it, but it was awesome. The beans are tender and flavorful. It also comes with chicken but the beans are the star of the dish. If you have not been here go give it a try. Portland has so much good food that I don’t typically go to the same place twice but I’ll go back.

Worth it

By Una Boricua |

The first time I came here, was with a couple of friends. A group of 5, ordered several dishes and every single one was delicious. Loved the variety of dumplings, specially the ones with the spicy sauce. The Duck House fried rice is loaded and delicious. I’ve been back a few more times and never disappointed. Staff at the bar are friendly and fast. Can’t wait to be back!!

Not the best

By Cheechinsc |

Very crowded - glad we had a reservation. We all got a dish to share and quickly knew we had too much food. My chow mein was ok - nothing special at all. Too many people standing by our table which was right at the door so conversation was nearly impossible. Lots of Asian people in there so I expected more. Live and learn!

Awesome Chinese food at great prices

By Hella B |

There is a reason this place is always busy - the food is good, the prices are reasonable, wine pours are generous, and staff is very friendly. This was my third visit and I continue to love the place. This last time I took my very picky mum and she was raving about it. I've also been with Chinese friends and they like the place a lot. I've ordered a variety of dishes - they have a huge selection, including vegetarian dishes and different levels of spicy. This last time we ordered the Peking duck for the first time and that was quite good especially if you eat the meat with the crispy skin - it is a more expensive dish and has to be ordered in advance so more of a treat. The duck bone soup was lovely, and it had tofu in it, which I usually don't like, but it was really good. They are pretty big and have some large tables if you want to take a group. I will definitely be going there again!

Amazing!

By etayloe |

Possibly the best food I've ever eaten. Definitely the best Chinese food I've eaten. Our waiter (sorry, I don't remember his name) did a fantastic job recommending dishes and adding special dishes to our table. 10/10 will go there next time I'm in Portland.

Poor Service

By grahaminkpen1959 |

Started well, informed about 30 min wait and this was about correct. Ordered meals to include for starter, mains. 1 main came up before starter. When waiter was asked why the starter had not been served first he spilled a load of bulls**t about the Kitchen producing the meals randomly due to workload. Eventually the starter arrived 5 mins after one of the mains. Then my main arrived but not the rice. Rice appeared after I had eaten the main. They need timing lessons and waiters trained in customer service. 1st and last visit to this place on this trip. They could learn much from Thai Peacock in the art of producing food on time and in order in a busy service.

Best Chinese in Portland

By RRN-PDX |

A friend suggested we meet here for dinner, though we were hesitant because of the mixed reviews on service and food. Well, I guess one should trust a friend who is Chinese to find good Chinese food - we were truly in culinary heaven for the evening! Apparently all the good wait staff was working our night. We arrived before our friend, were offered a table, and then had three other staff offer to seat us. Once seated, we were never without complete attention throughout the meal. We let our friend lead the ordering, though we tried some old favorites. Nothing disappointed - the soup dumplings were tasty and in a wonderful broth. Kung pao chicken is my favorite, and this is the best I've found in Portland in many a year. The mu shu pork was very good, and the honey walnut shrimp were the highlight of the meal (we had had this dish in a San Francisco restaurant in Chinatown that was known for it, and these shrimp were even better). Round out the meal with Chinese yams and braised snow pea greens (can't remember what they are called). Best testimony: My husband is not a fan of Chinese food, but he said we could come back here about once a week!

Cold food, fed gluten

By RubyDo1956 |

This place came highly rated and what a disappointment it was. I’ll also be transparent our meal was comped after they poisoned me with high gluten noodles. My husband wanted spicy beef noodles. We ordered Ma Po and beef soup, waiter told us they were out of wheat noodles which was great as I have a horrible gluten allergy. The noodles were going to be house made rice noodles. The Ma Po arrived and it was tepid. It tasted as if it was never really cooked as opposed to cooling down. Horrific. The worst I’ve ever tasted. Soup arrived and I dove in. Immediately started with facial flushing and bloating. The waiter came over and admitted the noodles were wheat. We literally had to leave within five minutes in the event I had to go to the ED. He was apologetic bit really. If you KNOW someone has a food allergy? The site itself is awkward. Looks like an old beer hall. Double two thumbs down. If you have any food allergies stay very far away.

Desapointment

By WestCoast 90 |

Great location. No parking. Average food except for the dumplings which are above average. Expensive for the food quality. Service needs a lot of improvement. They give you the impression that they do you a favor for serving you. Had to ask twice for extra plates. Biggest disappointment - Duck House doesn’t serve duck. Everything on their menu can be found at any other Chinese restaurant.

Only slightly better than changs...

By Summerasalifestyle |

Medium sized space that feels more like a bistro than Chinese restaurant...Bigger bummer is that it kinda reminds me of heinous pf changs Music is a pop style musac Hot and sour—ok Pork wontons chili sauce—slightly better than ok Average at best. Yep this is only slightly better than changs. Not sure how this got on eater.

Not your normal greasy Chinese!

By sandrakayphotos |

Pretty good for a first try! I have been rather hesitant about trying this place, mostly because the Americanized version of Chinese food usually leaves me feeling like I've been greased to death. This place did not have that effect! The food was fresh, fast, and very good! I've never had such tender shrimp, the hot and sour soup was well balanced and the menu offerings seemed to be more than your usual Chinese restaurant. Quite happy with the service (A+), the prices, and the location. The only things that I was not pleased with being the loud music with advertisements and the entryway waiting area layout. Overall it was a very pleasing dining experience. I would definitely go back. I would want to try all new things except for the house oil hot chili wontons. I need to eat those again someday soon.

Used to be much better

By amyarizona |

I just had mediocre, greasy Szechuan food at The Duck House. I used to go here for Peking Duck a few years back. The place used to be packed and I thought the food was Taiwanese and very tasty. They still sell good dumplings but the menu has changed and the food forgettable. We had a hot pot which had a lot of vegetables and tofu and equal amounts oil and sauce. Maybe this is Szechuan style but I found the grease hard to eat. We also had Dan Dan noodles which were just ok. But light on meat. The won ton soup had an ok spicy flavor but was just broth with practically no tofu or vegetables, served with it. It also came after my therapy dishes rather than before. The restaurant used to be packed with Asians from the nearby university but tonight it was all white folks. I wonder where the Asia’s are eating now.

Good Chinese in inconvenient setting

By jimvdberg |

When you enter the place, you think you're in a classic grand café or even large chic pub. Atmosphere therefore is great, different seating options in large restaurant. At the bar is comfortable. Service a bit slow, not really interacting with clients. They serve soup and entree at the same time, Chinese habit I suppose, but prefer to eat it seperately. Nevertheless food quality is good, big portions, reasonable prices.

Grease, grease, and more grease 😫

By Larry K |

Damn, I was so hoping that there was a Chinese chef in America that didn't equate stir fried with boiling in quarts of grease and that he would be working at duck house... Nope, not there. The food tasted fine, the service was good and friendly (until I told the waiter that we would do the boxing up of our leftovers so we could leave the grease behind-see photos-he quickly exited in a huff), and I suspect if you stick to the dumplings and peking duck you might be happy. I just don't get it... I do stir fry at home with a couple tbls of oil and it is great (and healthy) but every time I and my Chinese wife hit a Chinese joint I end up exercising for a week just to lose the weight I gain from one meal. What boggles my mind is that in all the reviews I read on Chinese restaurants nobody ever comments on the grease. Guess I'll just keep waiting and hoping some Chinese chef in Portland finally gets it.

Not Fancy, But Really Good Food!

By David M |

It was a dark and stormy night, as we say in Portland, and we were chilled too. And hungry. We had planned to try Duck House for the first time after seeing our matinee show, and so we did. It turned out to be an excellent decision in several ways. Tea arrived quickly, and drink orders were taken. The menu was difficult-- more choices than we knew how to decide. In the end, we turned out to be almost brilliant. Alas, only "almost." The egg flower soup was surprisingly sweet, which was a little disappointing. I had expected a more salted flavor. My wife thought that it might have been because of the corn, but I'm not sure. Still, it was good, it was hot, and we were glad that it came as quickly as it did. The entrees were also quite good. My salty and pepper squid was cooked as well, I think, as squid can be cooked. The texture was perfect! Salt level was also right where it should be for my taste. This was an amazing performance! The chow fun my wife ordered was also very much to her satisfaction. Both of us this pleased in the same restaurant on the same night? Wow! So, why not rate the restaurant as excellent? Well... television. There were televisions broadcasting basketball games on every wall. I know that many people really like that. Many people were at the bar and watching while they enjoyed a drink, and that's fine. Personally, I find it distracting. We will happily go back to Duck House, but will look to see if there's a more "blinded"place to sit.

Excellent place for Sichuan food

By Parag G |

There are few good Chinese restaurants in this town. So, a warm welcome to Duck House. We ordered dumplings, beef rolls, Pork belly, and every single dish was great. The level of heat is more bearable than some of the other Sichuan places we have eaten. The restaurant is clean, and family friendly. The service is slow now but expects it to improve in future.

Xiao Long Bao

By YetiTumbler |

Had brunch this weekend and tried both XLB's (pork & shrimp/pork) and a spicy hot pot-type dish with cabbage & fish that was recommended by our waiter. All were very good and introduced me to a few spices/flavors that I have not experienced before. We were fortunate to grab a table when they opened because the restaurant filled up quickly. Service was reserved, yet attentive. I plan on returning soon.

If this is the best Chinese in Portland, I'm sticking with other cuisines

By MangiaMuse |

We went to this busy restaurant and waited over an hour to be seated. The dumplings, which the reviews we read said were great, were only average. The food was decent, but nothing special. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Portland is a great food city, but I guess Chinese isn't its forte.

We loved this place!

By TerriR588 |

Amazing Szechuan style chinese food at the Duck House which was recommended to us by friends. The menu was huge and our great waiter, Justin, provided some excellent recommendations. Every dish was spicy and savory with fresh ingredients which we love. We would like to go back and try other dishes. I was surprised by some of the negative reviews. We felt this was one of the best Szechuan styles we have ever had. We will go back and recommend to our friends and family. Conveniently located near Portland State; we walked there from Keller Auditorium.

Good But Not Worth a Long Wait

By TheLeongOhana |

Using the Yelp app we were able to put ourselves in the waitlist. It was quite a busy spot but overall not worth the wait in the end. The design of the restaurant is bit like a bar/pub especially with the large bar in the front of the restaurant. Some tables in the front, typical family style round tables way in the back, and elevated tables along the side was not the typical restaurant layout. Seating was close together along with the proximity to the aisle. The pub theory was confirmed after we were seated and found the former name inscribed on our table. The menu was fairly typical so we started with pepper beef which was tender and came with sautéed onions and green peppers. Our next dish was beef chow fun and it was just ok as there just wasn’t enough meat or flavor. The Sichuan fish looked spicy but it was all show as the fish could have steeped longer to get more flavor into it. The eggplant with pork was one of the better dishes as the eggplant was cooked well and delicious. For whatever reason, the Westlake soup was served last (not sure if this was Portland style) but it was quite good even though they did not have red vinegar (a first). Family size bowl of rice was reasonably priced at $4 and was more than enough for all of us. Service was average. Lighting was dim and decor where we sat was views of boxes and the drink refrigerators.

Loved!!

By happytraveler189 |

I read about this restaurant on Eater-PDX and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed every bite of my scallion pancakes & basil chicken. Our lunch came out hot - leaving me to believe it was cooked to order rather than sitting under heat lamps! Service was fast & the portions were very generous. I strongly recommend checking this place out...I will definitely go back when I’m in town.

Mediocre Food

By Melanie E |

An acquaintance recommended this place to us. The 5 of us all agreed that we’ve had better. The rating is based on our dinner experience. Rating is 1 to 5 with 5 as the best. We each ordered a dish each. Food – 3 (beef chow fun 3/5; beef with broccoli 3/5; snow pea leaf with garlic sauce 5/5; honey walnut prawns 3.5/5; house special garlic pork spareribs 2.75/5 (flavorless & pricey). Checkout the all day dim sum menu even though we didn’t order any dishes. Value – 3. Portions are sufficient. Entrees range from $11.95 to $19.95. Ambience – 4/5 - great place for date night or celebrations. It’s in a heritage building Service – Friendly & okay. Reservations are taken on Yelp. Hours: Mon to Sun (except Tues) from 11 am to 2:30 pm for lunch. Mon dinner from 4-8 pm & Wed to Sun from 4 to 9 pm. They offer meat dishes including chicken, beef, lamb & pork. There are a good selection of seafood, tofu, & veggie dishes that will suit all appetities. They serve lunch specials from Mon to Friday until 2:30 pm. It’s mediocre food with a long wait.

Tasty!

By michael_portland_or |

Went here with 2 families. We are Chinese and are always on the hunt for good Chinese food. The soup dumplings were a bit doughy, but tasty. The spicy wontons were FANTASTIC. Did not like the ma po tofu.....they use a strange chili powder that was really missed the mark. The beef roll was a hit. We did not realize you need to order the Peking Duck 24h in advance, so we will have to come back and give that a try. Overall, we'll be coming back.

Good Chinese

By bettihomemaker |

We were on the train and we met a professor from the University of Portland. We were thinking of eating at the Duck house. He said that he and his wife had and really liked it. He said that their green beans were excellent. So we ordered the chicken with green beans. Delicious! Green beans were great, the chicken was cooked perfectly in a wonderful sauce. It was a lively restaurant and the service was very good. I know I saw on Yelp where people were complaining about the service but obviously the owners are paying attention to what people say. We would definitely recommend

Best of Portland Authentic XLB

By Saehirk A |

Beef roll is amazing! I sometimes stop for lunch just to have the Dan Dan noodles on the fly. My friends are excited about Din Tai Fung coming to Washington Square in Nov but I just shrug and tell them Duck House is one of the best in Portland. If your visiting from the bay area and your from the Sunset District then this is the place to go for food!

Place for meals to share with each other

By AnyaOgorodnikova |

Family size portions of yammy meals. The downside of the place is constant noise. Lots of people around (at least during lunch time). But delicious food and great waiters. Meals are brought in almost no time. Good choice of vegan and vegetarian food.

Good Authentic Chinese Food, Needs A Little More Finesse

By Ming Z |

Our first visit to this nicely decorated Chinese restaurant that has been open for just over a year. Service was courteous and prompt, but not over-the-top accommodating. Decor is fresh and clean, ambience is a bit loud, but well within acceptable range for Chinese restaurant. Now to the food. We usually order a lot of foods from different categories to get a good sampling of flavors. Because we always over-order, the amount of food we want to take home with us is usually a good indicator of how much we like the place. Today we took home ALL the leftovers! The wonton in red chili broth is punchy, spicy, with great consistency of the wonton fillings. The broth is not overly spicy, so you can enjoy the fragrance of the chili oil drenched all over the wontons. Well done first course! Green onion pancake was, fair to say, a bi disappointment. There is no texture to the pancake, too doughy. Usually good onion pancake is crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside, with plenty of onion fragrance to boot. This item lacked the basic qualities that make good Chinese style pancake. The shape is wrong also. It would, however, make a decent cold road snack, so we decided to take almost the entire order (we each had a small slice of it and decided it's not worth spending our precious gastric volume to accommodate during this meal. We then had the steamed pork/vege dumplings. One can tell that the skin is made in house. The filling is generously sized, and savory flavor and some juice to boot. However they're way too big to easily bite into. They should each be about 30% smaller. Then it would be perfect. Next came the Yanzhou fried rice. It is very true to flavor, with all the right ingredients including plump shrimp, chinese sausage bits, egg, green onion. The flavor and proportion of all the ingredients is spot on. Finally the Szechuan fish boiled in hot peppercorn broth came. The portion is very generous. By now we are both pretty full, but the flavor of the broth convinced us to keep eating. Fish has excellent texture, not over cooked at all. Flavor is throughout, the peppercorn is there but not over powering. There is a pile of bean sprouts and cabbage lining the bottom so the size of the dish is a bit misleading, but there's no shortage of succulent fish fillets. Nice job with this dish! We are thoroughly satisfied after the meal, and we are leaving with enough food for at least a couple of good snacks! Can't ask for anything better! A solid 4/5.

A good place to take a business associate.

By Eugene F |

The PSU campus has lots of places to eat but not a lot that are appropriate for a business meeting. This one fills the bill. The service was a little awkward because of the way the staff splits responsibilities, but the food was good.

Underwhelming chinese food at best

By Jane L |

Saw a huge crowd waiting outside this restaurant on a previous visit to Portland so we decided to try it while we were in Potland this weekend. They do not take reservations for a party less than 6 people so we decided to go for an early dinner. We had the beef Chow Fun which was terrible. Very tasteless. The Chicken wings was good but sooo salty. Had the mapo tofu which was decent though it could have more ground pork. The Mongolian beek was the best dish we ordered. Their special spicy fried fish filet was also salty. We did not order the steamed dumpling because we saw how thick the wrap was on the dumpling. Portland is getting a Din Tai Fung in Washington Square Mall...go there for the steamed dumpling (also called shia loong bao) becaus ethat's what it should really taste like.

Mixed Reactions

By Elbecko45 |

I like the dumplings (I’m Caucasian). My Chinese friends said they are average as well as the other dishes we tried ; Dan Dan noodles, chao fun w/beef, wontons. The green beans were yummy.

Family Dinner

By Steve C |

Stopped in after PSU graduation. Party of 9. Seated early on reservation, great service. Multiple dishes including egg rolls, dumplings, soup, fried rice, fried tofu, etc. All good. Highly recommend.

Not our style

By buford33 |

Some friends of ours recommended Duck House so we decided to give it a try. We live in Portland part of the year so we’re always interested in finding new places. I’m sure for some people this is an excellent choice, just not for us. We had a wonderful server who was a bit shy, but very polite, efficient, attentive and involved. I cannot say the same for the hostess who was unwelcoming with that “we don’t need you” type of attitude. It was clear she thought we were lucky to be there and to get a table. A real turn off. The potstickers were better than average but not great, the Bao was just OK as were the egg rolls. The pork chow fun was so salty we only nibbled at it. I will say the portions are very large and the prices very reasonable and I suspect that’s why it has such a big following. Compared to Ling Garden, this place doesn’t hold a candle. We will not return.

A Sunday dinner treat!

By Cheryl |

This is our favorite Sunday dinner spot in Portland. We always try a few new dishes, along with a couple of our favorites. The servings are generous, the service by Charles is the fun and very knowledgeable with excellent recommendations. There can be a wait during rush times so we try to go before or after prime time. You will not be disappointed!

Tasty food -- convenient location

By rickh57 |

I went to lunch at Duck House with some co-workers; the restaurant is within easy walking distance of my office. I ordered their tofu dried pot, extra spicy. The food was very good. Since it was still steaming from the candle beneath it, it was physically hot, but not as spicy as I'd hoped.

Duck House

By John D |

If you're searching for a fabulous Chinese restaurant, Duck House is it! We shared a family dinner that was totally yummy! It was dim sum delight for us all! The restaurant was packed with people, so we had a short wait, but the food was awesome! A tip would be to check the wait list on Yelp, and sign in prior to arrival. We shared multiple dishes and each was yummy. Selina was our waitress. She took good care of us and spaced our food delivery out accordingly. Just great Chinese food!!! You have to give it a try!!

Excellent Chinese food - good mix of traditional and American styles Chinese food

By JLlovetravel |

I stayed nearby so it was the closest Chinese restaurant. I was expecting just typical American Chinese style food. But I was very pleasantly surprised by how authentic some of the dishes were. If you are into sweet and sour chicken or broccoli and beef, they have it too. I don't think you can go wrong with anything, and the portions are very generous. I had a very meal for about $22.

Disappointing

By Tom C |

Was visiting from New York. Went with family after reading reviews. The hot and sour soup was barely spicy, and tasted mainly of soy sauce. The General Tso's dish was also not spicy, and had a sweet and sour flavor; not what I would expect of this dish. The Chung Du rice was interesting, but without much flavor. The green onion pancakes were O.K., but without a good dipping sauce. Generally a pleasant, but unexciting meal, probably toned down for western tastes, although there were plenty of Asian customers.

No duck

By gilcuyugan |

The place is called duck house but they don’t serve duck when you order, the waiter said you have to order 1 or 2 days in advance for duck, that’s ridiculous, if you’re just visiting for a day or two. The servings are big but not the taste , it’s overrated. Our waiter was kind and helpful though.

loved the schezwan style

By Kyle L |

The place is packed and have a very lively atmosphere. I'd love to explore more of the menu, but soup dumplings and the drypot mushrooms were amazing. other smaller dishes were passable.

Check your credit card statement!

By Simon R |

I ate at Duck House Chinese Restaurant during a recent business trip in Portland, OR. The food was good, and my bill came to $23.90, which was reasonable. However, after returning home to the UK I have discovered that Duck House Chinese have charged $55.85 to my credit card, which is well over double the bill. Attempts to contact the restaurant to refund the excess charge have been ignored.

Second chance- totally redeemed!

By Lynn C |

Went here with some friends when they were newly opened. They were out of the veggie dumplings and veggie potstickers, which was a total bummer, and service was slow and not very friendly. Gave them a second chance and so glad we did! The dumplings and the potstickers (and the sauce, and the hot stuff)- all to die for. So much better than Din Tai Fung! Also had Chow Fun, hot and sour soup, egg flower soup- all very tasty. And our server was very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go back!

Mad place but fabulous food

By Maxd11 |

We walked a long way to get to this establishment and we waited a little while to get seated and served but my goodness; what a reward! It is bedlam but the food is fantastic. It's packed and noisy. We had two sets of dumplings/potstickers which were freshly made and the wait was well worth it. Big, juicy with freshly made meat, not the usual mush filling. I also had Sesame Chicken and rice which was also first rate. - portion size was excellent Along with iced water, Tsingtao beer and Pinot Grigio wine the three of us were stuffed and very very happy. Full of Chinese which was a good sign.

Went to Duck House for dinner last night, going today for lunch

By Myrla M |

There are many choices, and the six dishes we chose were superb. Other friends were at the Duck House and ordered different dishes from the ones we ordered. They were impressed with the food they ate and said that they are coming back to the Duck House, too. My friends and I prefer Chinese food and we're so glad we tried the Duck House. I'll order different dishes to try today. I'm hungry for lunch already!

Great food, but service without a smile

By Lillian T |

I would rate this a 5 for the food and a 3 for service. The xiao lung bao is good but the lamb with cumin is the best I've ever had with chunks of red peppers (don't eat them!).

My very first time Chinese Restaurant in Portland

By Nieves Wonacott |

I have been alsway told by my husband's family that my chinese food is the best. SO over the past 19 years, I never went to any Chinese restaurant in Portland. Each summer we came back to see the family, I always cooked a dinner for our family reunion. This year, we dropped my daughter to PSU for a Nike summer camp and my mother-in-law told me that she heard Duck house is good one. So, we went to try for the first time, I have to see it was a great experience. The food was delicious and we all enjoy it. It changed my way of thinking chinese food in USA.

It's kind of ok good...

By Frank4014 |

Slow service. Confused order. Hot n sour soup is just ok. Not that hot nor that sour. Not really upscale though they do have Nice seats. They haven't figured out how to do good service yet. Mushroom chicken just ok. Pot stickers a bit dry. I had high hopes but am probably not going back.

The real deal Chinese Food

By William F |

Went on a Sunday for lunch, arrived around 11:30, a little busy, seated right away, within 45 minutes, it was busy, busy, busy. We had excellent wait service, attentive, not pushy. The wait person takes the order, then tapes a copy of the order to the table which helps the dishes ordered to arrive accurately. We ordered the beef rolls, which were moist, hot and delicious; dry-fried green beans-young, tender, cooked just right; stir-fried fillet of fish which was fish slices cooked tender and juicy, not too-fishy flavor and with veggies. This was a new dish for us to try and would not hesitate to order it again. Finally, we also had cumin beef. The beef was thin sliced, cooked to a just-right tenderness, has veggies, and is a little spicy, but not "set your mouth on fire" hot. A delightful dish. The serving portions are generous. They serve a variety of beverages including a selection of beers. The restaurant has a dark wood decor left from the previous owners. It was exceptionally clean, including both of the restrooms. It is in the PSU area and parking can be a little tricky, however, if you are there on a Sunday, you can park for free in the PSU garage a couple of blocks over. Our total bill: $55.80 plus tip. If you like authentic Chinese food, this is the "real deal".

Tasty, quick, safe and friendly

I love green beans and eat them at every Chinese restaurant that serves them. Theirs were excellent, warm but not too spicy, good balance with chicken, good portion for the price.

Be brave and try the soup dumplings

By ZenDark30 |

Handmade traditional soup dumplings are the signature dish for one of the newest Chinese restaurants downtown. The eggplant and other dishes are traditional and nothing special. The soup had good flavor but was a bit too gelatinous for my taste. Being new they are still working on the kinks of operations but for lunch their service is polite and efficient. Insiders tip: go early and ask for a table away from the front door to avoid the draft from people coming and going.

Chinese Food Near PSU

By Mike McKenzie |

This is a good Chinese restaurant near the Portland State U campus in downtown Portland. The place is bigger than it appears with large round family tables in the back. We went for lunch and it was busy but the staff had the place running smoothly. We had pan fried dumplings, rice and two lamb dishes. The spicy lamb and the dumplings were really good. I wanted to see the kitchen of place in operation because they spanked out a lot of food in the 45 minutes I was there. I would eat here again.

Try the soup dumplings!

By richard g |

The dumplings are great! We had some noodles and some fried rice that were so so but we want to come back for a meal with more veggies and their Beijing Duck (reserve in advance). We think this place has potential for our tastes

Yum yum

By Cryptoref |

What a great place. Everything we had was great. Our favorite was the lamb, great flavor and perfectly cooked. Soup dumplings are fun to eat. We will be back to eat more of this menu.

Great food and great fun

The Duck House Chinese Restaurant was full of energy, wonderful smells and a cacophony of good food and people enjoying great Chinese food. Fresh and authentic! Loved it. 🦆🦆♥️♥️

Authentic Chinese food

By Osweg0 |

Great dumplings and excellent entrees. Portion sizes are very large and flavors are very authentic. We had soup dumplings, pot stickers and green onion pancakes. Entrees were excellent - chow neon, walnut shrimp and orange chicken

Great Experience

By Sarah M |

Stopped in for a quick dinner for our last night in Portland. the alcohol is really well priced, with a decent selection. The prices were a little higher than we've paid at other Chinese restaurants, however everything we had were fantastic. The pork buns and soup dumplings were especially good.

Meh

By Evolution26 |

After reading the write-up on the Portland Monthly, I decided to give this coveted spot a try. Definitely overpriced and just average. The soup dumplings were nothing special. After trying a dish that was described as over-the-top spicy, I barely broke a sweat. Be sure to wear a heavy jacket if choose to try this restaurant, as it was freezing inside, evidenced by many other patrons keeping their coats on, as well.

Duck into this House...You won't be Disappointed!

By Patrick M |

Travelled to Portland for the Weekend with my wife(From Bend,Or)...We were thrilled to have this Chinese restaurant recommended to us by our hotel Delux staff!Crowd at the door on a Friday night, but, no problem, they give you a thingy that lights up when your table is ready! Haven't had Chinese dishes like this since we left San Francisco. The Honey Walnut Prawns are to die for! Your "Neighbors" are a little close at tables around you, but you sure get to see all the great dishes up Close! Take a cab or local transit as parking seems to be a bear! But worth the trip out!! Enjoy!

Not your typical Americanized Chinese food

By ivymartinez |

Went to Duck House Wednesday night for dinner. This is not your typical Americanized Chinese food. We ordered salt and pepper squid and Mongolian beef. Both were great. Fresh food, vegetables cooked just right, nothing smothered in gravy or breading. Great food and great service. We'll be back on our next visit to Portland.

Great food, ok service.

By Daniel D |

A few coworkers and I recently went here for lunch and we really enjoyed the food. Most lunch entrees come with your choice of soup (egg flour or hot and sour), your choice of rice (fried rice or white rice) and the entrée, most of which are only $9. This is a good deal and as such this place gets pretty busy. If I had one critique is the service was ok at best. The food came out one at a time, rather than all together and it took quite a while. The servers also seemed disinterested. That being said the food and the value is what made this place for us and why we will come back. We had the orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, kung pao and the Mongolian beef. We all really enjoyed everything.

Upscale Szechuan dining at PSU

By Eugene F |

This traditional Chinese food restaurant replaces the beer pub on the cornier of SW College and 5th, using much of the architecture that was already in place. The prices are in line with similar restaurants downtown...so, yes, it is more than what you'd pay at the 4th Ave carts. The service was excellent, and the feed was very good. The place is still "learning" and there are a few things the staff is working out, but it promises to be a great place for students to take their parents when they come to visit, or for professors to have a casual lunch. I don't see it becoming a hangout.

Excellent meal

By John W |

The Duck House is the real article. Wide range of Chinese entrees at reasonable prices. The portions we had were huge. It is also very close to the University Place Hotel, where we stayed, and thus is a good dining option for guests staying there.

Delicious food - we go every time we visit...

By Ann R |

Duck House has wonderful, flavorful food. At this time, the Szechuan Pork Wonton w/Chili Oil and Pork Xiao Long Bao and Green Onion Pancake - all made in house when ordered...these and some other items take a little more time to prepare. Covid19 limitations are not allowing for dine-in.

Was hoping for better

By Lonnie R |

There was a 30 minute wait so expected good food. Was not impressed, our entree came out first, then the appetizers came out much later, one at a time. It took so long for the apps that we actually asked for them to be boxed to go, which they did not do. The entree was so-so (it was marked as a “must have”), the red bean paste bun was all right, the dumplings were the star compared to everything else.

Really, really good!

By goinonaroadtrip |

Absolutely fabulous food but be sure to “get in line” on line because the wait is long (but definitely worth it).

Missing Shanghai

By fljohnny5 |

Here for the weekend and decided to try to find some authentic xiao long bao. excellent restaurant and authentic food. must try when in portland

Went twice last week

By Daniel R |

Fantastic Chinese food. Its maybe not for the folks who don’t like flavor, heat and authentic regional Chinese.

Amazing Chinese

By CamilleInTheWoods |

Absolutely the best Chinese I've had short of San Francisco's Chinatown. Entrees come with their pork steamed buns, which are delicious. Highly recommend the wontons in garlic chili oil--to die for. Nice location and interior as well, and they automatically serve tea when you sit down. Also, for a meal in downtown Portland the price was really reasonable. Great dining experience overall!

Not awesome

By angiejasonm |

We were there for an early lunch so not many people were in the restaurant. The waitress seemed to talk to everyone except us. We finally had to flag her down to order. My husband ordered orange chicken. It was like ketchup was poured over the extremely dry and overcooked chicken pieces. The orange chicken from Safeway tastes better. The fried rice had ZERO flavor. The waitress never checked back with us. We had to get up and get our own forks sugar packets to drink the tea. Literally some of the worst food and service I’ve ever experienced.

The Staff . . .

By Yuri S |

I've been to Duck House twice, and I look forward to my next visit. The food is excellent and authentic, the menu is very good, and servings are large. I love the mu shu pork. The service, though . . . It seems the people who work there don't like their jobs. They are efficient and civil, but don't expect anyone to try to make you feel comfortable or welcome. Thus the four stars instead of five.

Excellent XLB's, need to try other menu items

By BeavertonORTraveller |

My wife and I have been looking for places in the Portland Metro area which serve xiao long bao. They are one of several up and coming specialties that are becoming popular in the area. So when my wife heard that Duck House in Portland served XLB's, we had to give them a try. Our planned visit got pushed out several times due to the unusually snowy/icy winter that we have been having in Portland, but today it was sunny and dry, so we were able to stop by. Duck House is located on the southeast edge of the Portland State University campus. As another reviewer noted, it used to be a pub, and still carries that appearance inside instead of what you'd expect a Chinese restaurant decor to be. But the interior is cozy and still comfortable and nice. Service was decent. We arrived soon after they opened for the day, so we were seated immediately, menus handed to us, and our choice of drink (tea and water) brought to us. We decided on two orders of XLB's, a dozen each of the pork and the shrimp/pork choice, as well as a vegetable chow mien to offset the meat-centric XLB's. The menu does caution that XLB's are hand-made to order, so expect an approprirate wait while your XLB order is prepared. Nonetheless, our XLB's arrived first, and they were excellent. The broth in the XLB's was perfect! My wife preferred the pork XLB's, but I found the shrimp/pork combination more to my liking. Either way, I definitely recommend trying their XLB's. The chow mien arrived after we finished our XLB's. It was served perfectly: right out of the wok so it was steaming hot. The serving size was on the small size compared to other restaurants, but after the XLB's, it was just right for my wife and I to finish. Prices are fair to on the high side of average. For the amount of work involved, the XLB's were appropriately priced. I thought the chow mein price was a little high. The only other comment we have is that the piped in Asian pop music was on the loud side. We'll stop by again and try other items on their menu. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the central downtown area.

Hit and miss - but do try it!

By HenryW |

Our cumin lb stir fry was excellent, as was the eggplant mixed dish and the solo pea pods. Other dishes ordered by our group of 10 were either way over-salted or otherwise mediocre. For us, the really good day she's were the best we've had in Portland, so certainly give Duck House a try and see for yourself what you prefer!

New Restaurant at PSU

By Eugene F |

Duck House will add something special to the PSU campus. Unlike the ale house that preceded it at this location (and didn't survive long) this reasonably priced full service restaurant has some promise. The specialty seems to be Szechuan, so choose your spiciness when ordering. Lunches include tea, soup, rice and, of course, a fortune cookie. I had the cashew chicken lunch, which was the highest priced chicken item on the lunch menu at $9.95. I didn't know cashews were that expensive (and the looked and tasted more like peanuts). Hmm. Service was excellent. The atmosphere, while still using much of the architecture of the tap room, is very comfortable and despite it being busy was not particularly loud. I think it would be a great place to take the family or a group to dinner, selecting family style servings to share. I'll have to go back and try that.

They refused to seat us

By 2017Mark |

Be advised. This page and their Facebook page have the wrong restaurant hours. It says that they are open from 11am to 10pm. Someone referred us to this place via Facebook and we went off the restaurant's profile on Facebook. We arrived at 2:45pm and we were refused a table. One of the staff said that they close at 3pm and if we arrived a few minutes earlier they could have seated us. Huh? So, if 3pm isn't the time the kitchen closes, it's the time you kick everyone out? I find that hard to believe. Some advice to the Duck House: If your kitchen closes at 2:45pm or earlier, then post that as your closing time, not 3pm (and fix the hours on your Facebook and Tripadvisor pages). Anyway, it's your loss. We had a wonderful meal at one of your competitors and we will not be back to your restaurant. We also get to post this one star review and tell our family and friends of your poor service.

Authentic as it gets

By GreyGhost531 |

Took my friend out on a day filled with adventure and finally it was time for dinner. Since she's from China I let her order for us off the menu and what we had was superb. We had spicey fish in gravy and the cold chicken with bone in. The sauces are great and we had a very enjoyable time, she was very happy with the meal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Try mongolian beef

By Gizemce |

Mongolian Beef is my favourite. We also tried Beef Roll, Green Onion Pancake, soup and noodle. It is not easy to find table at dinner time. Instead of beef roll they brought us pork dumpling so be careful if you don’t eat pork.

Sumptuous Excellence

By DundeeVino |

This is a restaurant that always seems to be packed. There is a line at 4 in the afternoon for dinner, and you can plan on a wait any time thereafter. Once you are seated, the service is very fast and cheerful. They have all the typical Chinese dishes, plus many you seldom see, like tripe and intestine. The ingredients are fresh and tasty and you can choose your spice level on most dishes. This may not be the absolutely best Chinese food in Portland, but it certainly rates near the top and it is Downtown, rather than on the far east side!

Eggplant is a must! fab chinese for Portland.

By rosaPDX13 |

My fave Chinese in Portland! my son loves the dumplings, the shrimp ones arent worth the price though. the eggplant is AWESOME!!! the chicken with pea pods= wow! so clean and like nY chinatown. big portions too

New favorite

By mrpanic7 |

If you love original Chinese food and people this is the place. It can get a little crowded when people are waiting for a table but the wait usually isn’t too long and the food is worth it.

Delicious Food at Great prices!

By Nowzar A |

I went there for lunch with co-workers and we ordered family style Chinese food where we are shared a bunch of yummy dishes. I can't remember how many different dishes we ordered but they were all delicious, such as the twice cooked pork bellies, pork dumplings, leek pancakes, eggplants, noodle soup with beef, etc. Service was great as well.

love this place

By Bobbyandmarie |

I was on vacation visiting and someone suggested this place. Being from San Francisco I was a little apprehensive because we have the best Chinese restaurants in the world but this place really surprised me. The food was wonderful and authentic...I would highly recommend this place!!

Memorable. Great food and service.

By Marilyn |

5 of us shared a variety of dishes including pork dumplings, garlic eggplant, and mushroom hot pot. They were all delicious and different. I especially loved the hot pot. It’s spicy and yummy. The server was gracious and informative. Go on line and get in line before you head over.

A Treasure

By hushberri |

We were a party of 25 and ordered a number of dishes family style so it's hard to name them all. A friend of ours who frequents Portland and had been to Duck House several times before did all the ordering. Chicken, Pork, Lamb it was all delicious. The green beans were amazing I could make a meal out of just green beans. I live in Phoenix AZ and have yet to find a good Chinese resturaunt. What a treat Duck House was!

A very good meal in a very busy restaurant on a very cold night

By gyw |

Went to Duck House for Xmas dinner with family. There were so many things we wanted to order but had to settle on the following. xiao long bao (soup dumplings), won ton in spicy sauce, tan tan noodles, wok fried string beans, pan fried dumplings and mu shu pork. Home runs were the dan dan noodles and pan fried dumplings. A close second, the won ton in spicy sauce. This is NOT as good as Din Tai Fung but still a very very tasty place to park oneself. Service is pretty darn pleasant. Street parking can be a bear during the day since it is on the boarder of PSU and the food cart pods but we had no problems with finding a nearby spot.
