Still the same; old school good steak and a staff that cares.

By Arnold_Ziffel |

Every time I’m in the vicinity with any kind of appetite I have to stop into this place to see if it’s still running. The most remarkable thing is the 90+ year old owner still out there working on the floor amongst his table servers, and speaking to his customers. You may find Mr Dunston bussing tables, or carrying out plates, or making repairs, but he is involved in all parts of the operation. Because I worked in the area 25 years ago I was over there for lunch very often. I would only suggest to them that a bowl of lettuce is not a salad, and they should add a few ingredients. They will if you ask them, and at night the salad looks like salad. That’s a minor deal, and no reason I would criticize the place. Their steaks have always been very good, cooked right before you over a mesquite grill. Their side items are predictable, and of sufficient quality. You’ll get a fresh roll with your meal, and generous amounts of potato toppings. They aren’t stingy with anything, but particularly the good service. But, the best part of the service is the owner out on the floor milling around watching every step of the meal. The clientele is mature, as are the employees and the owners, but they have a loyal following. It’s a little off the beaten path being on the former artery into the city. They are worth the ¼ mile drive from Stemmons to experience this place. I’ve been eating with them since May of 2000, and I can’t think of a bad word to say about them.

Excellent Food and Service

By dallasmsl |

My nephew, partner, and some friends took me to Dunston's Steak house for my birthday this past weekend and I was very surprised! The food was delicious and the price was very low considering the amount of food and drink we had! We started out with fried mushrooms. Each of us had some steak and even some shrimp. The atmosphere; however, can fool you. It looks like it was built in the early 70's - and stayed there. Maybe that's why the prices are so low. But it was crowded so that's always a good sign! Oh, the waitress and lady who seated us made sure our drinks were top notch! We will be back!

Harry Hines at Regal Row

By toppertx |

I think the previous reviews are confusing because Dunston's Prime Steakhouse on Harry Hines Blvd. is not the same as Dunston's Steakhouse on Lover's Lane. There is some similarity in the menus, and run by descendants of the same family, but the Harry Hines location serves prime beef whereas the Lover's location doesnt. The Lover's location has a salad bar. The Harry Hines location doesnt, but it has a much nicer interior. White tablecloth, etc. The prime location is well run and the waitstaff is very friendly. I have heard complaints about the owner on Lover's, but never had anything but gracious hospitality on Harry Hines. Steaks are good. Sides are good for the most part. Stick to salad, baked potato and grilled items and you won't go wrong. VERY reasonably priced.

Take a step back in time...

By Allablur |

A throw back in time to the way steak houses were in the 70s... Enjoyed a bacon wrapped filet, baked potato and a salad... Good basic steaks...no "confit reduction sauce with oil of goose tongues" here, just good simple steaks, grilled to your order. All at a reasonable price... Server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.

Very good food been eating here for 30 years. Pearl is the best waitress. Ask for her, good lady. The ultimate filet is the best and chicken is always good.

I Don't understand the good reviews

By Cornelius W |

Upon arrival, there was no hostess at the greeting station, whilst a group of 3, 4, 9 and three pairs respectively gathered, the hostess turned out to be an older lady casually dressed in jeans, loose shirt and white sneakers, didn't give a RAT'S *&&, plopped our menus on a table said nothing and walked away cassually. Never engaged us in any form of conversation, We had to wait at said table for 17 minutes, before a waitress serving another table noticed and then asked "are you being served?", before getting the simplest water! then bread followed 7 minutes AFTER! we got salads which was another wait of 13 minutes at which point I was frustrated but my wife being the steak connoisseur was most patient as she wanted their FILLET to do the talking.... by the way was comparable to a lesser (Outback Sirloin) what a waste of a 48 minute drive from McKinney..... what's worse is the establishment has the makings to be a very good steak house but it's like no one cares walking aimlessly back and forth, with the exception of two!, a pleasantly sized young blond servering us and the tallest slim waitress serving at another table were the only persons who showed interest in their jobs... other than that... Horrible service!.... food critics would have a field day in there.

Steak in Dallas? There are much better options

By DallasMD51 |

Went there recently for the second time. Decided to try steak this time, as it's a steak house. Ordered the large T bone. The steak was relatively thin and came cooked beyond the requested temperature (likely made difficult to achieve due to the thin cut of steak used). The flavor was poor- tasted primarily of the smoke from the grill and was somewhat bitter. The steak also didn't have a great sear, therefore no crust/flavor- they might try a bit of salt/pepper. An average home cook could go grab a much better steak from nearby Central Market or Kuby's and grill at home and get far better results and spend less money. Sides were OK; the salad bar was good. Atmosphere was good on a Friday night and it was crowded, although we did not have to wait. Clientele skews older. Service was fine. This neighborhood restaurant in the University Park area likely has many regulars and is good in theory, but lacking in execution. There is an appeal there because it is priced more reasonably than the "known" steakhouses in the area, but if you hope to get a steak on par with those places, you will be disappointed.

DO NOT COME HERE

By Jen J |

If you are a person of color, DO NOT COME HERE!!! I came here with my son and grandmother and had people seated AFTER us, serviced after us, had their drinks refilled, food came out great, etc. EXCEPT US! We had to send the steak back because it was overcooked. Waited 24 mins, still no steak, no refills, no can I clear some dishes, NOTHING! I had to have another server call over "the manager", apparently you don't need to have customer service skills to work here. I WILL NEVER EVER BE COMING HERE EVER AGAIN!!!

Good food.

By John J |

Older, clean, family owned restaurant. Good friendly service. Food was very good and reasonably priced.

Excellent service, food, and atmosphere.

By Luciana H |

We visited this restaurant on the 30th. I was very pleased from the moment we entered until the time we left. The atmosphere was cozy, our server, Diamond, was fantastic, and the food was delicious. The pricing was very reasonable. I had the 9 oz. Filet Mignon cooked to perfection (between medium and medium well). It was very nicely seasoned. He had the 12 oz. New York strip cooked medium well and he was equally pleased. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and we plan to go again in the future.

Good, casual steakhouse

By Marisol B |

My husband and I are from out of town. It was reasonable priced for a steakhouse. The steaks were good. They have a bar so pretty much can make any drink you'd like. The breadrolls were nice and warm. Our sides were greenbeans and baked potatoes were pretty good. Strawberry cheesecake was very good.

Great food and service!

By Baldy47 |

I first ate here 35 years ago, and it is still an excellent choice for food and service. I stopped for lunch, and had a grilled chicken breast with sides. Excellent service by one of their regulars, Kit Carson, in the bar. Most entrees come with your choice of over a dozen sides of which you can choose three. Don't miss the black-eyed peas! Dunston's is a friendly place with great food; don't confuse it with the white-tablecloth super-expensive steakhouses. It's not fussy, but excellent.

Good steak, decent price, poor service

By snels315 |

We ate at Dunston's while staying in Dallas. The dining room looks very nice, with the grill on one side of the room. The steaks are cooked over a wood fire on a metal grate which they adjust with a large wheel on the side. It was enjoyable to see your food cooked in front of you. The menu had a decent selection of steaks and some seafood. We ordered a bacon wrapped filet and shrimp scampi. The steak was excellent, and the scampi decent. Although the main dish was tasty, the sides all looked like canned food. The gravy looked like a mix, and tasted like it too. Our server seemed uninterested in her job, and did not check on us until everyone was almost done, and did not clear our dishes from the table. I highly recommend that if you do eat here, you stick to ordering steak, salad and baked potato instead of ordering sides. The prices were decent for the steak, especially in Dallas, but the service definitely lacked.

Nothing to rave about, just a place to get a steak

By Patrick M |

Friends took us here when we were in Dallas for a convention. Walked into see a nice fireplace and a large restaurant filled with years of old furniture in a very dated building (dirty walls, broken outlets, etc.) Service was average and the food was nothing impressive. Steaks were small and thin but not bad. The baked potato came with a caddy of onions, sour cream, grated cheese and IMITATION BACON BITS! really? come on.. Anyway, this wound up being nothing more than an average meal at best. Not worth going out of your way for.

Amazing

By astonished2017 |

Food was excellent, service was even better. Steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. Baked potato was enormous. Would definitely stop here again on my next trip to Dallas.

Seems to be declining

By AxeMJax |

Have eaten here several times and had good food. Not this time. Pros: server was friendly. Place seemed clean. Cons: food bland and tasteless. Nothing seemed fresh. Definitely not a prime steak. There are too many other great places in DFW to eat. Will likely not return.

Quality Food and Caring staff

By kofidoe |

the food is very delicious especially i like their Mesquite Grilled Salmon and Burgers. I have not tried their steak yet but from what I gathered from my friends who had the rib-eye steak they were very much impressed. The prices are very reasonable. They got very good wait staff especially Deborah who normally seats the guest. Go and try them out and you will love it.

Medium to good...

By Donald B |

Interesting décor. Food and service were pretty good. I had the bone in rib eye special... not bad for a $25 steak.

Sizzling Grills!

By CAR |

Cozy restaurant where the sizzle of the grills, the aroma of flame-cooked steaks, and dim lighting create a atmosphere for a special night out and a great meal. Service was terrific, and I liked the relative quiet of the place on a Wednesday night at 7:30 PM. Western decor was traditional, but I enjoyed the photos and wagon-wheels. Sometimes a throwback is good! The food and service were an outstanding value. A lucky find!

Remember "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" well .....

By ChuckDallas |

Dunston's on Harry Hines is a bit of a time capsule. But it's a comfortable ride to the 1960s. The service is friendly and not rushed. The food is good. The decor is a tad dated but it's clean. And the prices are right. The "jail house" soup is excellent; and the baked potato is NOT what your doctor ordered. The price on a bottle of wine is very reasonable, unlike any other price I've seen at a restaurant recently (clue: it's a low price). It's good for groups, for children, etc. You will have a nice visit.

Excellent food & service

By Tanja T |

We could choose either booth or table. Restaurant not too crowded on a Tuesday evening :-) Our server Kit was extremely nice and very helpful - thank you for that :-) Open kitchen from which you can see the chef preparing your meal. Nice steaks 🥩 Nice atmosphere in the restaurant. Restrooms okay too. We recommend this steak restaurant 👍🏼

Flavorful!!

Great tasting steak! Cooked over flaming mesquite open fire.. Service was fast and friendly. Leah was awesome. Recommend the bone in ribeye..

No frills, not fancy, but what a fantastic place!

By alienpilot |

Was a bit leary of eating here, but yearned to try something new and this was a vintage place...started in 1955. Reading TA reviews, it appeared this location was the way to go. We frequently eat at Ruth's Chris, so I was prepared for what I was about to experience. The outside and surrounding area and marquee had me thinking second thoughts. But as soon as I walked through the door and smelled the fragrance of mesquite and saw the chefs searing steaks on the open mesquite wood grill, my fears evaporated. We were served by a fabulous, friendly server. Her name, she said, was "Billy the Kid". She has worked there 7-8 years and she loves the place and the management. In fact, Gene, the owner was here tonight, as he is on most nights. It appeared this was a local place with many returning. First off, this ain't your fancy, smancy high end steak house. You're going to find heavy vinyl tablecloths so they can be wiped down fast to turn tables, whipped margarine spread in the plastic containers (no butter), smaller portion sizes on the sides (most sides $1.99!!!), $4 bottled beer, limited bottled wine selections of which the most expensive was about $28! We opened the menu and were astonished at the reasonable prices! Half of Ruth's Chris prices pretty much across the board. Want a Prime Steak? Choose off the upper part of the steak selections. The ones lower down are Choice. The steaks were cooked perfectly and very flavorful! All the sides were awesome and the chocolate silk pie was to die for. We are definitely coming back. Nothing fancy, but the atmosphere was so cool, the service outstanding and the food EXCEPTIONAL!

Old times and mesquite grill

By Doug L |

We had an appointment in the Dallas medical district and thought to eat a Dunston's for perhaps the first time in 15 years or more. Glad we did! Judy had the featured $12.95 bacon wrapped filet mignon while I enjoyed the luncheon strip steak. The mesquite smoke flavor was strong on both steaks, and we enjoy mesquite grilled meat. She thought her steak might have been even a bit better than what she had recently at Riscky's Steak House in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, so that was a high compliment. The baked potatoes were fresh and came with small containers of the loaded fixings, which was nice. Both steaks came cooked as we ordered them, which was medium rare.

Authentic mesquite smoked steaks

By CollinsVancouver |

We followed friends to this restaurant because we told them we wanted a good Texas bar-b-q steak. They suggested this place which looked to us to be in the middle of an industrial area. Lots of the patrons looked as if they were there as part of a business luncheon but some families and couples were there as well. The place is a little dark with a heavy steakhouse smell. So Good! It has a warm, inviting lodge type decor. The menu featured many types of steaks, chicken ... can't remember if fish was on the menu or not. You also have a choice of dry or wet rub. The sides are generous and numerous. ( Not just the typical baked potato and/or salad). Our steak was very tender, moist and delicious. We watched a gentleman cook it over an open mesquite pit to perfection. We would never have chosen this place as tourists because it wasn't near where our hotel was ... but, as we all know, "locals" often know the best out of the way places. This is certainly one of those gems.

Good for a date night

By Pam H |

I ordered chicken fried steak...It was overcooked, but no grissle. My husband ordered a NY steak medium. It looked rare! Too red. Our salads were mostly lettuce! The baked potatoes were hot and very tasty! Our waitress was a good one. She took care of us but we waited too long for the check. They could improve but overall the food was pretty good. We will go there for another date night.

Old Time Steakhouse!

By Josue C |

On my visit to Dallas, we decided to eat dinner at Duston's Steak House, and enjoy it for the most part. The food was really good, steak is amazing and priced really well, bank won't take a hit. Our waiter was really, not to overbearing. The beer selection wasn't too big, but at least the wine list was good. The interior is a too elegant and too dark, just a kinda of outdated. Overall Dunston's is good place to get steak for a real reasonable price, even with my dislike of the interior I would go back for a meal.

Not a prime steak house at all

By RICHARD G |

This place was close to our hotel and had a variety of meal choices so we decided to give it a trial. I grew up in Dallas and had heard of this steak house and I figured if they have stayed open in two locations that they must be doing something right. We entered the Harry Hines locations and noted it seemed dated but was built in a nice quality of light fixtures with larger stained wooden beams. It was dark and a bit smoky due to the open mesquite fires used to grill the meats. We had Pearl as our waitress and she was nice and efficient. The problem was the food. The prices were low for a steak house so I knew I was not going to get a great steak, but I had hoped for more than I received. The salad had a terrible tasting 1000 island dressing and a few crunchy croutons, mostly lettuce. The ribeye steak arrived and was less than 1/3 inch thick and was pretty dry. It actually had a little pink inside, but it wasn’t big enough to be the medium rare that I ordered. It was an oval shape with largest width at about three inches and about four in length. The potato was edible but not great. My wife chose salmon croquettes - enough said! While the prices were fairly cheap, the meal was not worth what we paid. Remember Bonanza steak Houses. This was far worse than what they served. We won’t be returning ever and suggest that all of the four star reviews on TA and Yelp must be written by customers who been dining there for years and have fond memories of the good old days at Dunston’s when they could get a decent steak dinner for $5-10. However much we paid for this meal, it was so bad that I don’t see how anyone could be happy with their food. Their are better ways to spend you food dollars.

Hickory woodfire grill for steaks...yes please!!

By bchroninger |

After a long, stressful day my boyfriend and i found the hidden gem of Duston's. Very much hometown steakhouse feel. Plenty of food at a very reasonable price. Neat open hickory woodfire grill for steaks. Smells like a campfire to me. Very nice for low key steakhouse. Not pretentious...come just as you are. Was getting storefront remodel when we visited. Would come back if in Dallas again.

Great place to eat in the Dallas / Love Field area

By Yvan G |

Went to eat at Dunston's Prime Steak House with my wife and a friend. The three of us loved the place. The food was great, the service was friendly and efficient and the price very reasonnable. The place shows its age but it only adds character to it. We all had the 6oz filet mignon with all the trimmings and that was perfect for a good supper meal. It was our first visit, it sure won't be our last! You will not be disappointed.

Outstanding food and service

By kittenfaye |

It had been several years since I had been in the area. I love the atmosphere, wonderful food. safe area, great service and great steaks for the price. White table clothes. Come as you are. Very welcoming.

Hidden Gem - Great Value!

By Traveler |

After having visited virtually every Dallas steakhouse, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, Dunston’s wins hands down. A casual throw back atmosphere with friendly, low key service. It’s been around since 1955 and it feels like it - in a good way. Our New York strip steaks were cooked to perfection and the sides were excellent. We look forward to returning.

Tasty, but Average

By Fain R |

I'm giving this place an average rating. The food was good, but nothing really stood out to raise my rating.

Very good steak - parking lot and sign broken down

By J p |

The food is still very good. The interior decor is still the same. And the steak and sides were delicious. I had the strip and it was cooked perfectly. Most others in the table had the bone in prime rib and they all liked it too. But I almost drove past this because the sign was broken. It will be nice if they spruced up the exterior so we don't feel bad bringing business associates to dinner.

Good steak in Dallas

Good food and service. Very good value. Old well established Dallas Steak House. The food is always good!

Middle of the road steak house family owned and operated

By Arnold_Ziffel |

I’ve eaten lunch with this family for approaching 20 years now. It’s always been pretty good, but affordable, and not much changes. It’s still good but affordable, and it’s amazing owner is till right there in the middle of things. Gene Dunston set up shop on his corner there in 1955. And, he’s still right there doing what he’s wanted to do for 62 years. He used to be on the main artery into the city, but that left him in 1968. And, the major airport was right there in his back door, but that too ran off and left him there in 1974. He’s well enough established that neither of those two monumental things left him devastated. Some time in the 1980’s he stopped all operations, razed the building, and started completely over. The most amazing thing about Mr Dunston is his face time with the customer. He’s never in the back office being an executive. He’s out there on the floor with his table servers watching what’s going on, serving his customers, and clearing off tables. He’s there every day, and I’ve been there many times late at night when he’s still there watching what’s going on. I think he’s 85 years old still running around being a table server. They’re in the steak business, and they do a pretty good job at that. Their signature feature is cooking over mesquite. And they cook your steak in the dining room where you can watch the show. They have lots of other things that can be prepared on a open mesquite fire. There’s always a lunch special or some other thing for those not grill oriented, such as enchiladas. I’ve hit a few bumps in the road with them but I’ve never gotten anything really bad, and they always fix any problems. I’d recommend them anytime for a middle of the road steak place suitable for families. There are two locations, the other one being just East of the airport. When his sister wanted out, he bought her out too. Either one of them serves a very good product, but the stores have completely different personalities. The Lovers lane store has a salad bar, another throw back to the past. I always enjoy visiting them when I’m close enough, and I always get a good value. I can certainly recommend them and would not hesitate suggesting them to others. You can tell from the number of police cars parked there they must have decent food. IT’s worth your effort to give them a try. And, in defiance of the Mayor of Dallas they have an outdoor heated and cooled patio for smokers.

Warning: If you have allergies please be careful if you eat here

By smilingcarolyn |

They do not care about food allergies even though the allergy was identified twice for safety. In addition this restaurant clearly does not respect senior citizen customers. I was surprised at the poor service and lack of respect shown to me. I had just enough time to order and enjoy lunch. I asked the waitress - who was at least 75 yrs old - about the special. She informed me that the sirloin steak came in gravy and had onions. I told her that I was allergic to onions and can't eat gravy (since most gravy has onions). I asked what I could order that was similar. She pointed to the sirloin steak and side salad. I ordered the sirloin medium rare. She returned with the burger topped full of onions dripping in sauce. I reminded her that I told her that I was allergic to onions. I also told her to remove the gravy placed on the side of the burger. By this time I had 3 sips of coffee. She grabbed the plate without an apology (hey, I am the paying customer who just watched her mess up). She returned maybe 30 seconds later having clearly just brushed the onions off the same burger. I cut a piece of the steak and noted that the burger was dry and cooked well done instead of medium rare. I had to call another person over to ask for the manager as my waitress was nowhere that I could see. The waitress clearly wasn't paying attention and does not care or understand about allergies. This can place someone in danger medically! The manager was well over 75 and was clearly angry that I complained. I explained to him that I can't eat if I can't prevent an allergy issue. I told him that I would pay for the small side salad I already ate but not coffee. He said "What's wrong with the coffee" and I explained that I had only 3 sips so I would only pay for the salad. He was angry at me. He did not offer an apology for anything that happened. He literally grabbed the 3 dollars from my hand. What happened to Texas Hospitality? This was my first encounter with Texas hospitality! Too bad I had to give one star!

Nice evening

By Julia S |

This is a classic stone and leather dark steakhouse. The steaks were good a bit under cooked but still a good flavor. Salad that came with our dinner was standard. The rolls were ok. My family and I enjoyed ourselves and would eat here again.

Fabulous steak!!!

By Lee M |

His place is fantastic and I’m so happy I decided to dine here! I got the 9oz filet, cooked to a *perfect* medium rare by Jose, the grill master! The steaks are grilled over an open flame and it gives the meat just the right amount of char on the outside. Ohhhhhhh soooooo good! Don’t miss this place! I’ll surely be back!!!!

Just ok

By ALBERTO T |

Don’t expect too much! Menu and daily offers are impressive but in reality food not good or preparation not help .. also very small portions.. Desert peach crumble stuff just un-eatable- raw. I don’t really recommend..

Delicious steak lunch

By Lynn_Lyon |

A friend took me to Dunston's and could not believe I had not been there before. It is a large restaurant with a very nice comfortable set up. You can see the action where the chefs cook on the far side of the restaurant. I had the small lunch filet mignon - for $11.95 it was a great value. They smoke the steaks with mesquite. It was delicious with a house salad with balsamic vinaigrette, scalloped potatoes & green beans. My friend had salmon and it looked delicious too.

Good place with decent food.

By Kevin W |

The food is a step up or just equal to sizzler, with the price being a tad higher. The staff however is great and very nice to talk to.

Steak was absolutely tasteless-a Steak in Texas!!!!

By sarleo |

My husband & I had to spend the night in Dallas due to our cancelled flights. The first thing that came to our mind, besides getting a hotel room, was where can we get a Texas steak. We love charbroiled steak. The Ramada Inn drove us to Dunston's and told us there was no possilble way to get a bad meal. We walked into a dimly lit dining room with plastic tableclothes that were sticky. But, there was hope-I saw that the steaks were cooked over an open flame. Wow! That is the best way I like my steak, and this was going to be a Texas steak. Beef... from Texas. The server was sweet, and brought us our Texas steaks that had been over the flames. They tasted like leather/rubber. I don't know. They were tan. Not appealing. The baked potato had no butter, only margarine. No butter??? I don't like margarine, so I was hungry from being in the airplane since 8am. I ate the plain potato since I couldn't stand to eat the steak. But, the story has a happy ending. Homemade banana pudding. Delicious, mmmmmm. I had a big bowl. So, I had my first steak in Texas and it was a dud. You don't want to know what my husband said. He didn't order pudding and he didn't get any of mine.

Best Steak for the money in town.

By txtraveler46 |

Steaks are inexpensive and good. If you want great there are places in Dallas that do greay at twice the cost. Generally the staff is not attentive and the hostess doesn't smile and is rude. They HAD a decent bartender but she quit and the new one can't make a decent martini and can't manage her time. She is slow. I like to sit in the bar but no more. The service is terrible. It was so bad the last time I just finished my drink paid my bill and left. I would recommend Dunston'sbut only after explanning what you get.

A TEXAN RETURNS TO AN OLD FRIEND

By Hart |

OK; Dunston's is as old as I am. I've been dining there since I was a child in the 50's. What is a Dallas icon has fallen on hard times and is in a steady decline. At this point a evening at Dunston's is an iffy proposition. The food may be good or it may be marginal. The same goes for service. I hate to see this. A trip to Dunston's is like a trip to grandmas house filled with memories, hugs and kisses, but like grandma she got old and lost her way and now needs help.

Enjoyable visit

By Tracee P |

I had the New York strip. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The dinner salad was pretty plain. My friend had chicken fried chicken and really enjoyed it. Definitely will go back.

The price was right...

By Phil K |

Had dinner with an old friend at Dunston’s. I was surprised at how reasonable their prices were. I had a small fillet with baked potato and salad. I ordered my steak medium—it came out more well done. Also the meat was seasoned with too much salt. The steak was tender considering how over-done it was. The waitress said the potato would be served with toppings on the side, so I was surprised that it came out swimming in butter—not my favorite. The meal was okay, service was fine, and the atmosphere was good for conversation. The experience was not memorable.

Not the best!

By Greg P |

Arrived on a monday evening around 6. Place was not busy. Ordered a diet coke, tasted funny. Ordered a Fuzzy Naval, they were out of orange juice. Appetizers were so-so. Steaks had good flavor, a little overcooked. Brisket was dry and not tender. Waitress put in order wrong for one of our party. Had to wait awhile for that. Best thing about the experience was getting to see our entrees cooked over an open flame. I expect better from a steak reastaurant in downtown dallas. Probably will not return.

Really good

By nativenyOhio |

We enjoyed really nice shrimp cocktail xery reasonably priced. Two of us had the NY Strip and it was delicious. Hubby had the 9 oz filet and enjoyed it. They have some unusual side dishes that were so so, which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Service was efficient and friendly. Dining room is very nice. Would definitely come here again.

Delicious steak at a reasonable price

By CherlynH |

While on vacation in Dallas, our family went to Dunston's after seeing it on TripAdvisor. We had buffalo wing app, bacon wrapped filet and a burger. It was tasty.

Don't bother. Denny's steak is better.

By Mocha C |

One word sums it up: atrocious. Friends recommended we go there because it's tacky, cheap food, and supposedly bad (as in fun tacky experience that makes it fun). Begrudgingly, I agreed to go on a Friday night returning from a business trip starving. Every insult added to every possible injury was the case that night. Don't read any reviews here rated 3 or better. The real truth is in the bad reviews. Yes I've been to tacky restaurants that do serve decent good for price but this is just plain bad. Everything was a glacial pace, food served wrong, food took forever, salad bar is cheap iceberg lettuce with no culinary experience. Applebee's salad bar is a 5 star dining experience in comparison. The place hasn't even renovated since the 1940s literally and the clientele (loyal regulars) that keep them in business are just as gross as the place. After I complained no one cared to temper my mood from wait staff or management. The check took about 30 minutes. Our experience was about 2hours 30mins of agony. Do yourself a favor and ignore anyone's recommendation to eat here unless you want an awful experience that will make you story material that is funny to tell for 20 years to come.

I wanted a steak before I left Dallas. Stopped in here. Be sure to get the salad bar as a side. Its terrific. The steak was cooked just right with a smoky flavor. The sides were excellent too. Not very expensive for what you get.

Pork Roast is the best. I eat 2 or 3 times a week. Mandy is the best lunch waitress and Pearl is my favorite at night.

A Legendary Family Steakhouse

By RonnyC2723 |

Gene Dunston began his Steakhouse on Harry Hines back in 1955. The original restaurant was a small wood frame house. I discovered it in 1970 and have been a faithful customer since. Gene is still working at the restaurant, either in the kitchen or visiting with customers. Dallas is well known for the finest steakhouses in Texas, but no can beat Dunstons. The restaurant is compliant with social distancing. Gene Dunston himself can be seen sanitizing each table which is well spaced from the next table. His servers are extremely knowledgeable regarding steaks. They are fast, efficient and personable without being intrusive. The theme of the restaurant is vintage cowboy and western prairie art. This is a beautiful restaurant perfect for quiet or a romantic evenings, for family or for finalizing a business deal. A Legendary restaurant.

This should be a 5 star review

By DSD91 |

Everything was perfect except one important thing. Nice restaurant, clean with personality. Service was 5 star, servings were 5 star, staff was 5 star, quantities were five star, and the price was very fair. I ordered their best rib eye steak, perfectly cooked with over the top flavors, with baked potato and very good salad and enjoyed the event. BUT, the steak was tough. Prime beef should not be tough.

Awful steak

By Gary H |

Went to group function at lunch. Overall the staff did a pretty good job of handling lunch for 20. I ordered the 8oz ribeye. It was awful! Overcooked and tough. If you ordered a steak at Waffle House it would have undoubtedly been better. A “Steak House “ should be embarrassed to serve such a steak.

Good relaxed setting

By Diana T |

Met old friends here for dinner on a week night. No waiting for a table- not crowded. Servers were fast, attentive & unobtrusive. Food was good- not outstanding but it was a good meal. Both husband & I had the small filet mignon with salad & baked potato. Mine was very tender and cooked per my medium order. Prices were reasonable and the restaurant had a nice quiet atmosphere conducive for conversation. I would go back again.

Well kept secret

By Tammy |

We have eaten here twice before catching flights from nearby Love Field. I like that you can get a petite filet and other steaks that aren’t huge. The steaks were perfectly cooked and just as ordered. The restaurant is quiet, no loud music or blaring tv’s which is hard to find. Small, but decent wine selection. Great homemade desserts. I don’t get the review that said the meal came in tinfoil. The meal came on regular plates. The baked potatoes were foil wrapped as are baked potatoes in most restaurants. We will definitely be back when we are in the area.

I’ve had better

By Jungle Jim |

Was excited to get to go to Dunston’s.. busy night there but the wait was short, about 15 minutes. Salads were very good but the wait for our food seemed long. When my steak came out it was medium well as I requested but it was room temp. It obviously been cooked and setting not under a heat lamp. Waiter offered to have them cook me a new one but I said just put it on the grill and warm it up. My mistake... that just dryer it out...

Frequent visitor

By Lynn O |

My husband and I frequent this restaurant. The prices for a Prime Steak House are very reasonable. Service is always optimal (ask for Pearl). Have had almost everything on the menu and have yet to get anything that disappointed. May want to make a reservation for peak times on the weekend otherwise is usually pretty easy to get into. They have a full bar/bar area and large meeting rooms or private dinner rooms. They have another location on Lovers Lane in Dallas which we like because they have a salad bar which is not found in many restaurants any more but the Harry Hines location is quieter and easier to get to.

Old fashioned deliciousness

There were 6 in our party, everyone tried something different. Salads were super fresh and yummy, steaks looked good. Great dinner rolls and sides were all delicious. Server was kind and attentive.

Wonderful Experience

Everything was so great, the service, ambiance, food. The steak was cooked to perfection. Will definitely go back my next trip to Dallas.

Dunstons a sure good dining experience

Steaks well prepped and good value. A little busy tonight but understandable as its new years eve. Always good been coming for years and will be back Fireplace is always blazing and warm and inviting.

My favorite steak house EVER!

Always friendly wait staff and very attentive! And the food is the best in town!

Excellent filet mignon

By Baldy47 |

I was working late in Dallas, and near Dunston's (where I ate frequently twenty years ago). I had an excellent filet mignon, cooked exactly to order, and very attentive service from Diamond Lil. The restaurant has obviously had a through renovation in recent years, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Tables are spaced far enough apart to provide a level of privacy for conversations. The sometimes plastic trappings of a Texas steakhouse were nowhere to be seen. I selected three of a dozen sides with my steak; the best of which was crunchy very fresh slaw. One of their housemade desserts is banana pudding which I enjoyed to end the meal. Be sure to ask the servers any questions you may have; they are experienced and will help. The whole meal for just under $30.

Great place!

Had supper here and it was delightful! Steaks were great, service excellent, comfortable seating, lighting just right, music level just right. We had a truly enjoyable evening. It’s obvious after more than 60 years Mr. Dunstan knows what people like!

Hidden Jem

We were driving by one day and saw a special on their sign "Bacon-wrapped filet, salad, and baked potato $11.99" so we decided to try it. BEST steak ever....it seriously tastes like a backyard summer steak. They cook their meat over a real wood grill so the food doesn't have that gassy-chemical taste. Loved this place, but was a bit concerned about the quality of the ceiling...looked like it had some water damage in some places.

Excellent bacon wrapped filet

By BrianH-XLS |

In town with work. My wife and I stopped in after dropping my copilot off at DAL airport. She and I shared the 9 oz filet, augratten potatoes, ceasar salad, and peaches. With beverages and the tip our bill was $31.00. The steak was very flavorful and cooked just right. The server was excellent and took her time serving us and helped us decide which steak was the one for us. I’d happily dine here again anytime. The steaks are cooked over a real mesquite fire/grill and have a lovely flavor. It’s an older restaurant, but the food is good!

Really pleasant Texas kind of place

By jel2186 |

We wanted a good steakhouse that wouldn't break the bank. The steaks, the service, the entire experience was really pleasant. Not high cuisine pretentious, just real decent food and top notch service. We couldn't be more pleased.

This place is awesome! Best steak in town!

By P1Day1 |

They don't try and rob you blind. Great family owned restaurant.

Great steaks, great service

By postnote |

You are walking into an old fashioned restaurant, what hits you thought is the open wood fuelled griddle. Famed for their steaks which do not disappoint. Service is good and our waitress was helpful and happy. Yes recommend this steak joint.

Everything tastes Amazing.

I love this place. I used to come when I came up for Market at Dallas Market Center and would eat lunch and dinner here. Tonight we sat in the bar area and had Brandon (Matt Dillon). He was an awesome waiter. His manners were the best I’ve seen anywhere in a long time. I will always eat here when I visit Dallas

Dinner in Dallas

Good service and consistent food make this a favorite in Dallas. Dunston's is a very good value! The wood grill always gives the food a great smokey taste.

Perfection at extremely reasonable price.

By Bob H |

In recent weeks steak houses have either lowered their quality, size or have greatly increased prices due to the price of beef. Having visited Dunston's many times in the past, I just had to have a great steak, no matter the price. Surprise! Surprise! I could not find one thing on the menu that I thought had been increased in price. In fact their ribeye is about half the price at upper tier places in Dallas. Combined with the best salad possible, the absolute perfectly baked potato, and home made bread , (all included in the price) makes this a five star restaurant no matter of the location and age of the facility. Across the street from Brook Hollow Country Club is not what I call a bad location. The real treat is to be greeted by the owner since founded in early 1950's. It is interesting to watch him going around the restaurant making sure all staff are on their toes. At the same time, they all love him. Don't miss the three huge wood fired grills with the clever design of being able to raise or lower the grill height using a huge wheel. The firewood consists of logs that are easily 12-15" in diameter. Enjoy this place while you can. It will never be run in the future as well as under current ownership.

Great local place

We really enjoyed the restaurant...it is a very down to earth spot...unpretentious but with good quality food. Service was great and we really enjoyed the salad bar

Top Shelf steaks in a mom and pop Dallas landmark

By steve s |

it would be hard to beat their regular old filet mignon (5oz, 8oz?) for flavor or tenderness. I take the larger and my wife the smaller. we leave stuffed. never felt the need to go with the Prime, as the regular steaks are awesome. comes with fresh/crisp salad (homemade dressing), hot homemade bread, and perfect baked potato. I THINK the smaller steak with all the fixins is $15 and maybe the larger is $18-19. SUCH A BARGAIN!!!

More Like Golden Corral

By Krae18 |

Unfortunately when I was in Dallas last week I took the advice if the concierge at my hotel and went to Dunston's. The building itself is in a bad part of town located between an old gas station with liquor store attached and an old warehouse. Although this restaurant is not a buffet it's food tastes like it is. The bacon wrapped "filet" was about the size of a tangerine, cold, flavorless, and the bacon was not even fully cooked. The side of mashed potatoes I had tasted like something out of a box with very little brown gravy on it. The scalloped potatoes were not scalloped, more like chunks of under seasoned potatoes in a cold, processed cheese sauce. The waitress did not come back after we received our food but to ask for the check. She asked if we wanted desert about 3 times and it felt as if she was only asking to add on more to our bill. My friends and I were waiting for a cab in front of the building when we were approached by a man asking for money, letting us know that he had been drug free for 9 weeks and behind on his rent, and then once we said no changed his story that he and his girlfriend were homeless. We quickly retreated into the building as the whole incident was quite frightening. I would avoid this place at all costs.

Why the good reviews?

By Stacy H |

I have absolutely no idea why this place gets good reviews. I’m embarrassed this restaurant represents a steakhouse in Dallas. The entire evening was horrible. The lady who sat us down was incredibly rude to the people ahead of us. When she sat us down at our table just slammed the menus down and walked away. We waited 15 minutes for a server to come to our table. The salad was okay but nothing special. We had to ask for bread which was okay but again just average. Both my husband and I ordered the bacon wrapped filet mignon which was not a filet. It was super tough and mine was fatty which is not what you expect from a filet. The baked potato was average but I was shocked to be served the cheese, sour cream, chives and fake bacon bits in little plastic containers. Really? Are we in a fast food restaurant? The fake bacon bits were a joke and the cheese was processed cheese. I don’t understand how this place is still in business. The prices are comparable to an Outback or Texas Roadhouse but I would certainly chose one of those options if you want to enjoy your food. Stay clear of this restaurant!!

Great place

By Larry S |

I found this restaurant on trip advisor what a great place. My wife and I both had the Ribeye steak it was cooked perfectly we really enjoyed our dinner they have a lot of different sides the choose from. And you can’t beat the price. I will definitely come back here when I’m in Dallas

This Burger is the one to beat in my Burger reviews so far...

By Grace W |

As you may know, I have been looking for the Best Burger in Dallas for awhile now. Just visited Dunston's and although they are a Steak House, I heard the burgers were good. First impression, I can see why they are not in D Magazine. D Magazine always lists trendy places and this place has been around awhile. I am looking for delicious food, don't really care about Trendy. Wow, the fire pit grills are legit. I asked about the cooks ability to achieve various cook levels on the burger and was assured he won't overcook or under cook the burger, he has been doing it for 50 years. My hat off to the Chef...each burger was truly cooked to perfection. This guy has skills. The bun and other supporting ingredients, lettuce, tomato, cheese and onion, were in perfect proportion. The bun was not dry or too much bread, exactly the right amount with good flavor. The key ingredient, the meat, was delicious. I ordered the Deluxe Burger which was 1/2 pound and a better ratio than the other Burgers which were 1/3 pound. The flavor from the fire added a wonderful flavor to the meat and it was seared on the outside and, as requested, still juicy with a pink center on the inside. The Burgers range in price from $3.99 to mine which was $7.95. I added tots - a Texas staple - and these were delicious - for $1.50. In my search for the Best Burger, Dunston's is the one to beat....I give them 🍔🍔🍔🍔4.5 out of 5 Burgers.

Oh my goodness good

Ribeye perfect. Salad fresh and homemade croutons! Rolls perfect. Green beans and Augratin potatoes yummy. Topped it off with the perfect chocolate silk pie. The ambiance and service was more than expected. Went there because of TA reviews and was not disappointed.

Among our favorites

We feel very comfortable and relaxing at Dunston’s at Harry Hines/ Regal Row. The food, prices, & decor always combine for a very nice experience. Easy to find with lots of free parking. Nice appearance upon arrival. Where can you go for filet mignon for 2 with salad & sides, 2 cocktails, 2 desserts, all for under $60..... large stone fireplace, tall ceilings with dark wood beams, open kitchen with wonderful smells emanating, lots of old Remington cowboy prints... We’ll be back.....

It’s say that racism is still being displayed in 2024

By Storyteller603049 |

Me and my wife’s went Dunston’s Steakhouse located on Harry Hines for my birthday on August 10, 2024. When we arrived the lady didn’t greet us she just said table or booth, we said booth. She seated us. We waited while the waitress went from table to table never acknowledging us or coming to our table. This went on for about twenty minutes. Then these two caucasian men came in and was seated. I told my wife if they were waited on before us were leaving. Well the waitress ran over and greeted them and took their drink order. So we got up and left. I think it was racial. I will never return to this place again or recommend it to anyone.

Nice Steak House with Decent Prices

By April_May2007 |

There are 3 fire pits, which have wheels to raise and lower to grill, so that the meat is cooked to perfection. We have been several times and tried various meats, such as ribeye, chopped sirloin, smothered steak, and BBQ brisket. It has a casual atmosphere, with home-style vegetables, and the prices are very reasonable. We enjoyed a nice fireplace, with oldies music today.

I had the rib eye steak

By Todays_Treat |

I ordered the rib eye steak, baked potato, vegetable and a salad. I ordered the steak medium well, it came out red and under cooked. i told the waitress and she took it back to the cook and he re-cooked the same steak I ordered. By health code it should of been thrown away since I ate part of it. It was dried out, burned and tough when I got it back. The salad was mostly lettuce with a tiny bit of carrot shavings on it and nothing else not even a crouton. The salad dressing was watered down. the baked potato was hot but they only gave me a very small and half full container of sour cream (half teaspoon at best) and the same with the cheese and chives. The vegetables looked canned and I didn't want to try it.

Good But Had Hoped For Better

By Grant W |

I took my wife to Dunston's for a nice steak dinner. We went on a Friday night. There was no wait for a table...the place is really big and has lots of room. I was hoping for a table in the main area near the fireplaces but we were seated in the side room. The room was ok but kind of like a side room/catering hall. Our waitress was ok enough but didn't act like she really cared about the service or us. Kind of take it or leave it. The food came out in short time. Our salads were good but not alot to them. The rib eyes came and they seemed small for the price. The steaks were quite tasty and the baked potato and all the fixin's was a real treat. All and all a good meal but the restaurant and website market the place more along the lines of Ruth's Chris. They have a way to go to catch them in the service and quality area.

So-so

By jillhou |

It was a fine meal. Nothing great. Service was outstanding. I got fried shrimp with black eyed peas, green beans and salad. Didn't seem like anything was fresh except the salad. Canned green beans, canned black eyed peas, frozen breaded shrimp. All tasty prepared foods, but very average.

Dinner

Remodel Badly Needed – Don’t Look Up

By VegasBling |

My family and I arrived at the restaurant at 6 p.m on a Friday night and there were 3-4 tables with other diners. However, the restaurant continued to be busier as the night progressed and by 8 p.m., it was three-quarters full. Restaurant has an open concept kitchen in which visitors can see the steaks being cooked. We asked what the specials were and our waitress admitted she did not know what they were. She seemed to be either new or untrained because when I ordered my meal, she sis not know what the options were for the sides. When ordering the baked potato, toppings that include green onions, cheese, bacon and sour cream will be bought to the table. Also, the side salad is of a generous portion. I felt the prices were inexpensive. However, one diner in my party was not happy with the steak she ordered and felt the waitress did not a prime rib but another type of steak. Another minus is that the facility needs to be remodeled. The ceiling specifically looks absolutely disgusting. The dated interior does not match the very nice exterior. I feel that a remodel would make diners feel more comfortable. Secondly, staff needs to be trained better.

Great Service, Great Steaks

In my experience, it has never lived up to its potential..I still have hope

By TokyoBob1975 |

Visited on 10 July 2009. This was at least my 4th visit to this specific location, and I have been to their other location on Lover's Lane at least 3 times. Ordered ice tea, 10 oz Rib Eye (cooked medium) which included baked potato, salad, and roll. It was reasonably priced at $20.95. Unfortunately, the quality is not what I expect from a Steakhouse experience. It is about the same quality, if I had gone to the supermarket and cooked the food myself. I expected a thicker cut of meat. In the past, I have ordered the Prime Rib and Chicken Fried Ribeye (CFR). The CFR is a very Texas meal, and I prefer it to the regular ribeye. The Prime Rib was OK. The potatoes are always on the regular size wrapped in aluminum foil. Recommend you ask for salad dressing on the side, if not, they add too much dressing. Took me two visits to learn that trick. The staff is friendly and the service is good. The lighting is on the dark side, but the table covering is white plastic, the silverware is low end generic restaurant gear. All my visits have been for dinner at various times. The average age of the other customers have always been at least 50, married couples and small groups. The customers seem to be regulars and know the staff. This location is out of the way, so you have to want to find it. If you are new to the area, please study a good map and get directions. This area has seen better days, so its location is probably its biggest challenge. You do not want to get lost and have to ask directions. If it had a higher traffic or more affluent area, it would do much better because the volume would drive up quality. After living in TX for 9 years and visiting for business at least once a year, my goal has always been to find that small family run steakhouse--a hidden gem. This could be the place, and I just hope to catch them on a really good day. I am afraid at this pace, it will just disappear and be gone the next time I visit.

Not Bad

By bartsarah1 |

It looked and smelled really good when I went in. They have an open grill so you can see the steaks being made. I ordered a steak, fries, cole slaw, and green beans. It looked fabulous but the taste was just ok. The steak was kinda "bland" without steak sauce (I usually don't use steak sauce) and it was a little fatty. The service was ok, they were very nice and polite. I am in town for a couple weeks and will probably eat here again, but I will try something else next time.

Dallas Tradition

Basic steakhouse specializing in flame grilled beef. Prices reasonable, especially the filets. Other menu items vary in quality and preparation.

Great recommendation!

By malityson |

A staff member at the Omni, where my husband & I were staying recommend this place & we are glad he did! I was 8 months prego at the time & this place was DELICIOUS! Everyone was very friendly here & we LOVED all the food we had --I started w/ a salad & french onion soup--mmmmmmm so tasty...then we both enjoyed steaks & dessert too of course! Very laid back atmosphere & tasty food to go along with it.

Nice place good food

we were visiting this place a couple of times, good sign, with some people. It was a relaxed place to eat a variety of food. Steaks were excellent, other (side) dishes also.

Not very good

By Texzilla58 |

This place is a remarkable story that unfortunately is winding towards a sad ending. In operation since 1955 one would hope this old place would have honed its craft and be prepared for success as millenials discover old standards. Old Mr Dunston might still be working the line and bussing tables but he needs a real manager who can whip this place into shape. It's really tired; and while its cheap, bad food and poor prep is not a value. This was simply a bad meal all around. On entry one is immediately hit with the thick fumes of butane. The open grills aren't well ventilated; if you're sensitive to this stay away. We had a party of six, there because one thought it was a delicious find. We'll never take her recommendations again. Starters are a selection of frozen items and canned soups. Fried mushrooms were frozen and fried out of the box, yuck. The salad was tired iceberg, some stale croutons, a rock hard cherry tomato, and watery blue cheese dressing. The waitress was friendly but poorly organized and oversold some items and failed to disclose others. The cheeseburger is discussed with reverence. The waitress spoke about it as if it were the best thing on the menu. I ordered the half pounder medium. It came as the smaller version, burned in one side to crisp tasting of carbon. It should not have been served; I would have sent it back but we were a large party and we'd waited nearly an hour. Terrible. Waitress asked you want fries, tots or onion rings. Told the rings were special I went with them. Nine circles of frozen onion rings from Dams. And when I got the check was charged 3$ for them. Wife's filet was the best on the table except for the ashy burned butane aftertaste; I think they use Fuel embedded charcoal. Another filet was so bad she spit it out. A chicken fried steak was very good but the gravy was weak and tired. Baked potatoes in foil. Really? Worst is the little container of sour cream and the use of fluffed margarine for butter. The rolls were overrated. Bye won't be back.

Old fashioned steak house

By Aileron |

Pleasant steak dinner for half the price of Ruth's Chris. Prime beef cooked over mesquite. My steak was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Not as fancy as a high end steakhouse, but if you want a good steak at a reasonable price, this is the place.

Simple Old School Steakhouse

By kingofthehill81 |

My wife and I have memories of eating Dunston's Steak House in Mesquite when we were kids. After passing by, we decided to give it a shot again. It was good but not great and the price reflects that. We both ordered the 6oz Filet with the baked potato and salad. Our steaks came out as ordered and were juicy and flavorful. The baked potatos were solid performers as well, it is hard to mess up a baked potato. If we had paid more, I would have given them a lower rating, but the food was good and the service was great. It is kind of a sad scene when the average customer age was well over 50 and there was no effort being made to bring in younger customers. We probably will not be back since it is a bit out of the way of home, but did enjoy my experience.

Disappointed

By Metody |

Harry Hines Location - Disappointment We went with friends for lunch. The service was poor, the lettuce in our salads was wet and old. The Manhattan my spouse had was poorly mad and watered down. The baked potatoes were tiny. Two of the 3 steaks ordered were cooked as requested. We’ve never had a bad experience here before.

Great food and excellent service

By backpack96 |

Great meal for a decent price. Atmosphere is one of a much higher priced steak house but the food is just as good or better. This is always my first stop when I land in Dallas. Very close to Love Field and not much traffic and plenty of parking.

34 years since last visit.

By Coombed |

I lived in Dallas for 5 years in the 80 ' s but now reside in my native London, England. I was a frequent lunch time visitor back then as it was close to my office. During our recent family holiday to Florida and Texas, thought I go see in Dunstons was still there. Indeed it is, my whole family loved it! My 12 oz prime sirloin was perfect as we're the accompanying dishes. All of us enjoyed the food, the service was attentive but not over bearing, 86 year old Mr. Dunston came and had a chat and even served some of our food, a nice tough. Great steaks grilled over open pit mesquite at reasonable prices. Gets my recommendation.

Hints of Bygone Glory

By Kesha N |

Our family of five visited Dunston's late- ish on a Sunday evening. We knew that the place would probably be pretty empty because of the day and time. My husband had fond memories of eating at Dunston's years ago with his father who was from the area, so he was excited to revisit the restaurant when we were in town. The outside of the building is grand, with a covered porte-cochere made of stone and lit like a five star hotel valet line. The first room we entered from the outside was an antechamber with extremely high ceilings, which also would have seemed grand had it not been adorned with stacks of metal chairs, broken lights, and a filthy return air vent. The next room held a huge, stone fireplace, but no hostess. We waited several minutes before anyone showed up to seat us. The dining room was impressive in a 'look at how nice your new nursing home is, Ma' kind of way. It has some elegant touches that hint at the fact that it had a real hay- day in the past and hasn't always been so sad and lonely. There's some lovely chandeliers and tasteful wooden accents throughout the room. I imagine the grill with the visible fire in the middle of the room was very chic and hip fifty years ago. However, the 'wood-burning' grill on the side of the room put off a very unappetizing gas smell, and I had to take the children outside for fresh air throughout the meal. The menus were greasy and covered in crumbs, but the rest of the restaurant seemed clean. There were a few very old customers in the restaurant. The food was just average. Nothing special, but my husband said his steak was good. The chicken and sausage gumbo was inedible. It tasted like Campbell's chicken noodle soup with sausage and tomatoes(!) in it. We live pretty close to the Louisiana border and I've grown up eating gumbo my whole life; this was not gumbo! I don't even know what I would call it. I didn't eat it, but my server didn't bother to ask whether I disliked it or would like something else instead. The restaurant seems to have given up on trying to be elegant or upscale, though, and not just where the food is concerned. There are details behind the grill like plastic silverware trays tossed haphazardly on the countertop and shovels that probably should be hidden in a cabinet or left in the kitchen. There are a few old, plastic boxes of unidentifiable purpose stuck on the walls behind the grill that make the place look like a trashy Dairy Queen. The tables are set with the short, foam tablecloths most people remember their grandmothers having in The Seventies, complete with the scars from previous diners' forks and knives. The bread and potato toppings come to the table in plastic, lidded to- go containers and plastic diner baskets. On tables around the room we could see more plastic baskets holding ketchup bottles and steak sauce, which did not mix well with the 'theme' of a nice lodge- style steakhouse. Overall, the place gave a vibe sort of like if the hotel from The Shining had a baby with a small- town Dairy Queen.

Outstanding food and presentation! The owner is an all-star!

By Arnold_Ziffel |

I dropped into this place at high noon on a Friday, and it's always a busy time. This place is an old favorite for much of Dallas as they have been on their corner now for 63 years. You'll find a lot of white hair in there from the owner to the clientele. Dunston's sells steak grilled over mesquite wood in the dining room. They have a good selection of non-steak items but the focus is steak. The place is owned by a hands-on guy who is known for getting on the floor with his servers and participating in the work. He's always watching what's going on, and isn't a bit above bussing tables if that's what they need. In his 'spare' time he runs another store on the other side of the airport. Today I got a server that could have been better, but I think he was just new to this brand. He knew how to serve tables, but had a little trouble with the order. They fixed it immediately at the cash register, and my steak was good. But, it's always good even though the prices seem to be out pacing inflation by a noticeable amount. My rib eye was cooked perfectly, and the side items were of adequate quality. His daughter is doing the bulk of the back office work, but a lot of the staff there has been there for decades. It's turned into the informal Southwest Airlines corporate cafeteria due to their proximity to the airport. Since opening there in '55 the main artery into town moved away, and in 1974 the most of the air traffic moved out to DFW. With all of that traffic leaving the area it still hasn't dented his business. I've been liking them for about 18 years now, and I'm still going back. I'd recommend them to anyone for what they have to offer. It's a heart warming thing to see the owner who is past 85 years old still out in the middle of operations and greeting customers.

You get what you pay for, with rude management at no extra charge

By mombatDallas |

This place is fine if you're looking for a cheap steak, the kind you put steak sauce on! I ordered the 10 ounce filet at $14.95, and when it arrived at the table, it was wrapped in soggy awful bacon. I asked the manager if I should have expected that, for instance, did it say as much anywhere on the menu! It did not, and not only did he not offer something else, but was very rude to me for questioning the presentation. Some people think wrapping steak in bacon is a nice touch. I believe it should be up to me whether or not I have mine done that way! Salad bar is boring. Just iceberg lettuce, the usual diner type salad dressings, pea salad, soggy potato salad, pickled okra, carrot and raisin salad, nothing to write home about. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Too bad about the manager's behavior.

Old School Steakhouse

By Mike S |

My Friday lunch buddy suggested Dunston's. Neither of us had ever been there but I had time (It's about a 30-minute drive from home.) so off we went. The restaurant has been around since 1955, but this building isn't that old. I'd guess this was built in the 70's or 80's. No telling what the neighborhood was like at that time but now, this is in a light industrial area. (There is another location, but it appears to be even newer.) The smell when you walk in is amazing. Steaks on an open grill. Yum! We were seated immediately in a large dining room that had a view of that grill. There was a reasonably sized crowd of mostly older folks (like us) though there was one family with kids. The tables were spaced well apart so there was plenty of room. They also have a full bar that is impressive to behold. I had the Friday special which is BBQ Brisket & Sausage. It comes with 3 sides (though onion rings and fries each count as two sides). So, I had the onion rings and fried okra. I wasn't expecting it but they served the BBQ covered in sauce. Usually, when I get BBQ, the sauce is served on the side, so I didn't think to specify. I'm not a big fan of sauce so it made it hard to really taste the flavor of the meat. But it was ok. Both the brisket and the sausage were pretty standard. (You don't go to a steakhouse if you are looking for craft 'cue so I tried to manage my expectations.) The portion size wasn't huge, but it was plenty. The onion rings and the fried okra were good...not great, but good. My friend had the chopped steak with a salad and fries. He thought his was very good. He gets chopped steak quite often when we go out and he really liked the flavor. And the fries are cooked in beef tallow, and he thought they were great. Our servers were excellent. Friendly and very attentive but not to the point of being annoying. The prices were great. Each of ours was less than $20 (pre-tip). Can't beat that for non-fast food these days. It was quite a drive, but we love finding non-chain places like this to try. So, it was worth taking the time to give Dunston's a try.

Good food & service

By Softhartzz1 |

We are in Dallas for a little vacation and my husband chose this restaurant. It's old world style, a lot of older folks but the food was very good! My prime rib was charred-medium and so tender and tasty! Our server, Janet, made our evening! We enjoyed her so much (and the food) that we returned the next night! Thank you for great service and food! Kudos to Janet!

Food and atmosphere that Dallas deserves

By isislee |

I hate to give any place a 5 but this place definitely deserves it. Cute atmosphere, great food and the price was worth the taste and portion. Staff was very welcoming and great at their jobs. Will definitely come back!

Worth a visit.

By kwtaper |

Came on Thanksgiving for lunch prior to Raiders Cowboys game. 11am reservation. Easy parking. Big space inside. 2 of us at the table ordered turkey dinner. I tasted the stuffing. Meh. Some negative comments about the gravy. I had NY Strip and 3 sides. I enjoyed my plate. While the steak was not the best I ever had, it was very good. Server was very personable and did overall nice job, though forgot to place appetizer order so that came out after mains. Worth a visit.

Absolutely lovely meal. Staff were fantastic and the beer was icy cold. They didn't even mind a rough looking Aussie coming in fairly late.

"Steak" is a stretch

By Adeliegentoo |

We wanted a table-service dinner for our one night in Dallas. Dunston's was one of the suggestions the hotel clerk gave us. the room is pleasant - cavernous, with the kitchen at one end and the two huge wood grills in front of it. We enjoyed watching the grillmaster from our table. The two women behind the desk were in the middle of something when we arrived and ignored us for a minute or two. After that, they were friendly and helpful. We both ordered the smaller strip steak, one rare with a baked potato and salad, and the other medium-rare with potatoes au gratin, green beans, and cole slaw, The steaks were about 1/2" thick, so there was no difference between "rare" and "medium rare." They were flavorful enough but not that tender. The baked potato was topped with such a huge knob of butter that the insides were soggy. The server delivered a small plateful of small containers of sour cream, salsa, and chopped green onion. The potato gratin was tasty and very rich. The green beans looked canned and/or overcooked, but I was reminded that veg are rarely very good at steakhouses. All in all, the meal was passable. The service was friendly and efficient. We noticed that several of the servers, as well as the two women at the desk, were "older" women, probably in their 50s and 60s. The prices were very reasonable. I think our steak dinners were about $16.95 each. We also had a beer and a glass of wine, and one dessert ($3.50.) This is a pleasant place, and far better than any fast food or chain restaurant. The environment is pleasant, the service ditto, and the food, while nothing to write home about, was a decent value for the money spent.

keylime pie for the manager!

By Bill B |

I went to Dunston's on a reccommedation. I was the only one in the bar. I ordered the Prime and it was passable. Bartender was running all over the place. I was finally asked if I wanted another glass of wine..... after I was finished eating. It took forever to get my ticket and then she disappeared with my Credit card for at least 5 minutes.... When she finally rhad she returned, I asked where had she been with y card. She replied, "I had to get my manager a Key Lime Pie, your credit was up front. Needless to say I will not return

Disgusted visit! I was told this was one of the best steak houses around, better than outback! Woodfired steaks aged perfectly. I want me to just say I am a good girl and so therefore when I go to eat out and spend my good money I expect good food! My group ordered cheese sticks as an appetizer it came with ranch dressing they do not have marinade who serves cheese sticks without marinade? I ordered a bloody Mary it came with vodka bloody Mary mix and a lemon wedge. I literally had to ask for our lives they did not have celery. Then when we ordered our stake the staking it did taste OK but all vegetables except for the baked potato are out of again they had literally no seasoning I asked for sautéed spinach it was boiled spinach out of the can. Would never advise anyone to eat at this restaurant again.😱😡 when I complain to the waitress she did nothing for my meal she didn't take off one cent.

Decent Steak Joint

By Timothy H |

I had a late dinner here (about 7pm) and was hit with the scent of a campfire at entry (which isn’t all that bad). The evidence of my presence would stick to my clothes when I left (again not all that bad). The service staff was very nice and didn’t waste time. We all ordered bacon wrapped filet mignon because who wouldn’t. The salad starter was tasty and the steak came out next accompanied by a baked potato which actually turned out to be the best part of the meal (the restaurant gives you quite a bit of condiments to add for your liking). The filet....good but pretty average. The beer....horrible. There were 2 choices, a bud light or what sounded like a dark craft beer. I think the dark beer was brewed in the urinal. I recommend sticking to a water. Would I go back? Sure why not. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get there though.

It's genuinely unique with good steak and collateral menu items

By Arnold_Ziffel |

I prefer doing business with an entrepreneur anytime, and I'll pick a place where the owner is present every time. Anytime you visit this place, you're likely to see 79 year old Gene, who built this place over 50+ years taking food to the table, bussing tables, and doing whatever needs to be done to make it work right. Their meats are very good quality, prepared inside over mesquite fired grills. You watch them prepare your steak, thus there's no question where it's been, and who's handled it. They have the standard side fare you'd find in any Texas steak house, and all of it's good. The servers there are as courteous and attentive as they should be. And, they are one of the few places that thumbed their nose at Dallas no smoking ordinance and built a heated and cooled outdoor (sort of) patio to accommodate the smokers, such as Herb Kelleher and Colleen Barrett, who are known to drop in on them anytime. Good job Gene, we love you!

Straightforward Steakhouse !

They offer genuine steak at Dunston's Prime Steakhouse at Harry Hynes Blvd in Dallas. They have Margaritas with a fiz . We had Calamari and Chops . Traditional ambience and personal service gave a perfect lunch !

They need an exhaust fan!

By jaclr |

Dunston's has rustic charm but the place is in need of a good cleaning, quite dusty. Upon entering we were met with a strong smoky odor that ruined my meal. My husband thought his steak was seasoned well and cooked properly but the sides were nothing special, probably canned. The iceberg lettuce in my salad was wet enough to dilute the dressing to the point it sat in a pool of "flavored water". Our waitress was sweet and informative. This place could be special with a little attention to cleaning and fresher ingredients.

Pretty good

When I am staying in this part of Dallas I eat dinner here. Good Steaks and good prices. This is a nice restaurant with good food. The ribyeye has never disappointed and the Bread pudding is always good. Staff is always friendly.

Great food! steak very tender......they had a corn mixture that was out of this world. Went with my mom for mothers day, but it would be a very romantic setting for a date.

Dunston's glory days are over

By Chris N |

Don't waste your time or money! I read a number of reviews before making reservations at the Harry Hines location. Many of the reviews were positive. However, of all the negative reviews that I read, every one of them were experienced when we visited. Upon arrival, around 5PM, there was one other table occupied. Our waitress arrived and asked for our drink order. I ordered a Colorado Bulldog as I had read that someone had reviewed that it was the best CBD they had ever had. The waitress says "oh no.. I have no idea how to make that. I'll ask the manager for help". I changed my order to an Old Fashioned. Holy sh**! She must have muddled 3 or 4 cherries in the bottom. It was the worst interpretation of an Old Fashioned I've experienced. My wife ordered a silver patron margarita. It tasted like a glass full of margarita mix only and was sent back in exchange for ice water. We ordered a filet and a New York strip. When our order came, the gentleman carrying the plates walked right over to the other occupied table, which was in the process of paying their bill. I guess he had a 50/50 shot at getting it right. 🤷 My NY strip, ordered medium rare, wasn't possible to be cooked anyway but well. It was, at best, half as thick as a normal steak and could have easily been mistaken for a breakfast cut steak. My wife's filet, ordered MR, was well on the edges, medium toward the center and damn near blue in the center. The potato fixins come in little plastic cups on the side. The green onions for the potato were slimey and smelled spoiled. The lettuce in the salads was wilted and slimey as well. The shining moments of our visit were receiving our bill and noticing that the margarita was taken off the bill and then catching our Lyft out front. I'm not exaggerating when I say that sizzler far outshines this place with service and quality of food. It may well have been an amazing place 60 years ago. Here in 2023, it's time to rebuild, re-imagine or perhaps just close the doors and call it a day.

BEST Hamburger I've Had In Years!!

By VanEsq12 |

Dunston's is a high quality, upper class steakhouse that offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for both family dining and special occasions. The service was first-class, and the food freshly prepared on grills prominently displayed at the front of the dining room. With leather chairs, fireplaces and dark oak furniture, one feels like they have stepped into an exclusive dinner club, without the burden of supper club prices. The menu is varied, and offers everything from catfish to filet mignon. This was a wonderful dining experience. A must-do for any visitors to the area.

Unfamiliar area for lunch

Stumbled across this restaurant just by chance. They have a great communication hamburger plate. Includes french fries and a beverage of your choice. Sodas, tea or leamonade. All for $7.99. What deal in a classy place. Great parking. Very friendly staff. Great value.

Ok

By Bikerjks |

We were excited to eat here. We heard they had great steaks. The menu was varied and there were unique items. However all of our steaks were tough. Our server was very busy running the bar but tried to be attentive. The restaurant was very loud which made it hard to converse

Not really impressed

By Heather U |

We stopped in for dinner while in Dallas for Market. It has that warm, comfy steakhouse look, but the food was disappointing. Just because "steakhouse" is part of the name, it shouldn't mean you can't serve good food across the board. Our group ordered chicken, steak and a hamburger, none of which was worthy of the Prime Steak House title. Dunston's looks to be a nice place for locals to dine and have a glass of wine, but it was not what we expected.

Good Food and Excellent Service

By Denny R |

My last visit was my second trip to Dunston's and both visits have been a very good experience. The steaks are cooked at a grill where you can see all in the restaurant can see the chefs at work. The service from the staff was excellent.

High expectations not met

By SoFinicky |

The furnishings and ambience were pleasing. Our hosts brought us here with high praise. My steak was chewy and fatty. Although I enjoyed my salad, I suspect it came from a bag. The high points were the yummy rolls and key lime pie.

Gorgeous Steak

The steak here is gorgeous and very reasonable! We thought the place was closed as there are no windows and it is very dark inside but don’t let that put you off! The staff are lovely!

Good Food, Comfortable Venue

By Michelle D |

Really I’d give it a 4.5. We wanted a casual steak house in Dallas. The place was causal, warm and smelled delicious of a wood fire and steak. It looked like a place from the 60’s. My ribeye was good, my husbands a little better. Excellent baked potato and a great vodka martini. All the food that came out to other tables looked great and home cooked. Home style desserts reasonably priced as well. Staff very friendly. We left feeling full and happy.

Anywhere else until they fire the cook.

By Poppa H |

Nothing ‘Wowing’ about this steakhouse or steak (except Brandon the server / bar tender. Brandon was awesome). Started with an awkward reception by some guy that walked out of the office with a phone in hand. I informed him I had to make a reservation but the place was empty (5pm on a Tuesday). Eventually settled at a table in the bar area. -Salad: normal chopped lettuce thrown on a plate with watery ranch. Kinda gross. -Potato: fist sized with dressings in tiny plastic containers in a plastic fries tray on the side. Again, nothing special or unique to the brand. -Steak: photo posted. Very upset with the cut. Bad cut for the price (well below my expectations for TX / VERY well below my expectations for Dallas). Thin with little marbling and large dense fat line in center. A ribeye should be everything this wasn’t (like Good). Cook: Ordered medium rare, could have just as well asked for medium well. Little to no pink left in center and no juice. Ate three bites and tipped very well after showing and sliding the rest across the table. Was unhappy to say the least.

mediocre at best

By Ted M |

My wife and i were in from Kansas City for a couple of days and this place was close to our hotel. Kansas City is an old stock yard town known for their steaks and BBQ.....so it's my fault we went to a steak house here in Dallas. But i thought Dallas was an old stockyard city as well. My wife had the salmon, which she said was very good. I tasted it and it was good....cooked well and no fishy taste. I had the fillet, which was also cooked well but a little tough for a fillet. I should have known it would have been a lower grade of meat based on the price of the fillet. Overall though, the steak was decent...good flavor. However. every one of their sides tasted like they came from Costco frozen food section....except costco's stuff has a better flavor. The toppings for the baked potato were all delivered in these little clear plastic containers with lids on them....a couple for the cheese, one for the chives, one for butter, one for sour cream....etc. And the other sides were at best, caffeteria grade. Even their bread was just some toasted buns with minimal flavor. Bottom line, it was ok given that our expectation was not real high. But this is not the place to go if you want a real quality meal and great service.

Awesome Ribeye

In town for a conference and went here to have an authentic Texas steakhouse experience! Food was awesome and prices very reasonable! Truly enjoyed my time in Big D!! Have to come back again when it is truly a pleasure trip!! Will definitely go back to Dunston's for great eats!!

A very positive experience with my family.

By Logan T |

After extensive research into the previous reviews, my family and I decided to take the leap and try this restaurant with low expectations based on the reviews. With much to our surprise the wait staff were attentive, food was fairly priced, the environment was very clean and great dinner atmosphere all of our food came out pretty quick, the steak was very flavorful, the chicken was moist and the barbecue brisket was fantastic highly recommend getting the loaded potato, and don’t forget to finish your meal of with an amazing strawberry cheesecake.

Gorgeous steak great service

By tashakiraly |

Food was excellent and so was the service. Just needs a bit of attention in certain (minor areas) such as the leather on the seats being ripped.

Steak Dinner was Ok

By Kent W |

I had dinner with an old high school friend to catch up and recollect old times over dinner. I had a filet medium with baked potato soup and some corn. The restaurant has obviously had money invested in the facility as it is nicely appointed. The food was good quality but the steak was very undercooked and somewhat grisly. The restaurant was very smoky but bearable.

Nice people, average food

By EC170608 |

I've been working here in Dallas for four weeks and my wife travelled with me this trip. We were hungry for some good steak so we gave Dunston's a try. The food didn't excite us. The service was good and our waitress was great but the food was average. Can't recommend......

Great food, okay service

By jay_dog98 |

I had the bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and yes, it was amazing. Even the sides tasted good. The service was fast but the waitress "memorized" our order and brought me a baked potato instead of fries, but it wasn't a big deal. The place is big, but is pretty empty early afternoon.

Don’t be mislead

By AmericanSisu |

It got fairly decent reviews on other sites and it looks like a good place. When you walk in it seems as if it will be a delightful atmosphere. Upon sitting at the table I quickly realized this wasn’t what I thought it would be. The food was alright even if it did come out in a tinfoil wrapper. As the atmosphere settled upon me I realized this is a common place and there’s nothing too special about it.

Disappointing

By Jay S |

The service was below average. Our waiter didn’t set the tone for an enjoyable dinner. The bone-in ribeye was dry and way over cooked. The chicken fried steak was not very tasty. The brown gravy that came with it was runny and seemed to be from a jar. The highlight of the meal was the salad bar and the rolls. Thanks but no thanks. I won’t be back.

Amazing steaks, really outdated inside

By Xxaaronxx |

At first I thought this was a fancy steakhouse but after looking around this place needs some Tlc help. The air vents need cleaning really bad like the ones on the walls looked like it had water damage but let's get to the food we orders fried zucchini and that was amazing got steak was nothing like I have ever had. Only issues we had was I asked for house wine and got top shelf ( didn't know what the difference was other than price ) and when we got the bill I got charged for top shelf.. When I asked the waiter about it she said next time specify which one you want and I told her I did and I got ignored. However I got free deserts after and the price adjusted

Wonderful respite

By Alicia P |

We spent three weeks in Dallas from Albuquerque NM to help with my mother's surgery and recivery, 2 weeks longer than planned. We needed a high quality meal at a reasonable price, but longed for a great steak. We were completely surprised to find everything in one place. We made Dunston's on Harry Hines a routine stop after leaving the hospital. Welcoming, quaint, never rushed, excellent selections prepared by expert pit/grill masters right in front of us, exceptional service staff.

Not good

By Osmar B |

This review is for the one in west lovers ln, Waiter didn't even remember the order, food price and no flavor. Price discrepancy with other location, bathroom situation just one stool. Didnt really thought was impressive at all, would I come back? He'll not.

Old Fashioned Steak House

By Kennyraybob |

If you are old enough to know what an old fashioned steak house should be you will appreciate Dunston's. They serve a great steak cooked over an open flame grill. They have the big wheel to raise and lower the grill. The service is really good as well as the food. I would recommend it.

Texas Family Steakhouse

By James B |

I came looking for a great Texas steak, having never been in Texas before. I had the 16oz ribeye with sweetpotato fries which came with a salad. First of all the salad dressing was pretty aweful, just the ready made stuff you get in bottles. The steak arrived, it was a bit smaller than I expected but otherwise it was cooked to perfection and tasted pretty great. Unfortunately the fries tasted of old grease. Service was great and atmosphere ok.

Delicious BBQ

By TravelKat21 |

We ate here with the family. Right when you walk in its like "mmmm...BBQ smell." I love that the grills and kitchen is in the middle of the dining area so you can see the food being prepared fresh. There is a nice fireplace in the lobby. The staff is all friendly. I appreciated that the drink refills kept coming without noticing or asking. The food was delicious and cooled properly. Many choices on the menu for a reasonable price. Great atmosphere, great food, great time!

Great bartender great food

By Jamie J |

My Dad and I come here quite a bit and Tabitha is always our bartender. We came in on Saturday with my husband and she was once again our bartender. She is so great. Good pours. Very fast, efficient and friendly and is a master at efficiently multitasking. While Dunston's is known for their steaks, I think their wings are the best. THE very best wings I have ever had. Crispy. Always hot (temp wise). The steaks are on display as you walk in the front door and you can watch the chef cook them in the dining hall. We always sit in the bar area. They have a patio that is completely screened and covered for smokers. They have a fireplace out there and also heaters during the winter. There is hardly anyone out there so it is nice to sit out there for a very private meal. They have a nice wine selection and a full bar. The steaks are also very reasonably priced. $11.99 for a filet mignon. Always cooked exactly the way we order it. Comes with a salad and 2 sides. Can't beat the price. Not to mention the great service too. They have a pretty decent dessert menu as well. My husband loves bread pudding. He eats it everywhere he goes if they have it on the menu. He said this is second best. And out of the tons of places he's gone that's pretty good. Tabitha said they make it in house. Try the wings.

Affordable Value Excellence

By Melonalody |

This restaurant was a breath of fresh air. Previous visits to Dallas introduced me to shockingly expensive steak houses. Being referred by our hotel we decided to give it a try. We were amazed at the affordability, the enjoyable food and the ambiance was such that you would expect to drop $100 per couple rather than less than $50. Yes, I did more then recommend the restaurant, I visited it a second time in less than a week and took guests.

AWESOME STEAK

By TexasTravelGal80 |

We ate here for the first time. I must say it was amazing. The large wood fire pits were amazing. They cooked our steaks on the pits as we watched. They were the best steaks we have ever eaten. The service was very good. We can't wait to go back to Dallas to try it again. The prices were great for the Dallas area!

GREAT place!

By April_May2007 |

I had the chopped sirloin with green beans, au gratin potatoes, side salad and rolls. Salad was large with homemade croutons and dressing, au gratin potatoes were rich in flavor, green beans were good, and the chopped sirloin was cooked to perfection, topped with grilled onions and brown mushroom gravy on the side. The rolls were fluffy and light. Service was great! Atmosphere was ambient. I highly recommend this place.

Ok won’t be back

By marva76 |

Husband got the wrong steak but ate it anyways . Was not waiting any longer for a new one . Just wish they put more emphasis on their baked potato and salad . Salad had no cheese or anything on it . Just lettuce and croutons. Service was ok . We won”t go back.

#1 Stop for Steaks in Comfortable Atmosphere

By Vanessa D |

My husband and I love the restruant on Harry Hines. It's our have to stop everytime were in Dallas. The cook really knows his mesquite wood fire Steaks we usually get the Bone in Ribeye and bake potatoes and side salad with homemade dressing and rolls. I also tried the Pot Roast it was awesome too. I love the candle lite old fashion atmosphere. I appreciate the fact we don't need a coat and tie to step into the place. No complaints here. LOVED IT ALL.

Great Restaurant

I grew up in the upper Midwest, with quaint steakhouses, where you received an excellent meal without breaking the bank. Dunston’s is easy to find, plenty of parking - and safe! Flying solo, I called ahead to make sure they had availability for one. I had read the reviews that this is a steakhouse that is reminiscent of “old Dallas.” I was warmly greeted and promptly seated. Quaint, clean environment. All of the patrons were happy and enjoying thei meals. The cocktails are generous. The wine is not expensive. The steak was amazing!!! The sides were fantastic as well. My dessert was two scoops of delicious vanilla ice cream. I was told to order fish the next time I eat at their establishment. They have been in operation since 1955 - family owned. The owner at 88 years of age still works! Fantastic restaurant, excellent meal! Loved the experience!!!
