Apparently this restaurant is surviving on its reputation. It’s been around since the 50s which could be the last time they cleaned or repaired anything. Service was very sketchy. One in our group did not receive his meal until at least 10 minutes after the rest of us. And it was wrong. Chicken fried steak was tiny and overcooked. Same with Mac and cheese, and almost no cheese. Asparagus was woody. There were probably 9 different salad dressings on the salad bar, no identification on any of them. Key lime pie must have been made in a 6 inch pan based on the size of the serving. House wine cost the same as my steak. Ice cream must have been put under the heat lamp before it was served. Did get a bit of a fireworks show when the chef spray some sort of accelerant on the grill. Right before he threw a hissy fit and pounded said can repeatedly on the counter. Guess he forgot it was an open kitchen. All in all, a very disappointing experience. Will not be returning.

We went on a recommendation for a strak dinner and we were not disappointed. It was very reasonably priced. My husband's steak was not cooked to his preference so he returned it. The wait staff & management handled it perfectly and could not apologize more. We would return not only for the food but for the incredible staff.

Sit in the back room and come with an appetite. The salad bar is fantastic as well as the steaks. Very inexpensive for what it is.

I have been eating at this restaurant for a number of years. The food has always been good and well priced. Some times the service is great some times not, bit I alway go back.

They have a 5oz filet for those of us with small appetites that was perfectly cooked and unbelievably lean. The waiter was very accommodating to give us each individual bills.

My wife & I both love going here. The food is always top notch and the service is very good.

Niece visiting from out of town wanted to eat at a steak restaurant on Valentines Day with family. Checked various places and nearly all had astronomical prices. Finally settled on Dunston's on Lovers Lane as reviews showed a reasonably prices place and, from past experience ,we knew it was a good place. Went there with 5 adults and 2 children and the bill came to $135,10 plus tip Service and food were good, we were squeezed in somewhat but since it was Valentine's Day Evening this was reasonable. Nephew enjoyed the crayons and coloring place mats.

After being seated, we couldn't get anyone to recognize that we were there...we notified hostess to no avail; finally flagged down a waiter who reluctantly took on our table. Food was ok, bone-in Ribeye was thin and a shadow of a typical cut. Never again

This place has been around forever and so have the people who go there. Nothing here is terrible, but it's also not sublime. It's just pretty predictable. The nice thing is that this is a Dallas staple and they really work hard to keep up standards. It's no Pappas Bros or even Trulucks, but the service is decent and it's close to SMU.

I like to take my 89 year old father here because it is truly like the places he used to go for those 3 martini lunches back in days of Mad Men. That being said, the food is very good. You can see them cooking your steaks over open flame. They have a salad bar! Remember those? They offer the usual sides of baked potato, green beans, cabbage, french fries, etc. They have a separate bar/dinning area in the back and if you're lucky you may spot some of Dallas' older (much older) celebrities and power brokers.

A great "retro" steakhouse. A big salad bar, tasty appetizers like fried green tomatoes, foil-wrapped baked potatoes, and great steaks! Friendly service. Delightful bread pudding for dessert!

Let me start by saying we love the location on Harry Hines. After 25 years, we thought we might shake it up a bit and try the Lover's location. From the moment we entered we were treated with contempt and a level of rudeness that I have never experienced anywhere. The older woman who came up to the front to 'greet' us treated us with disrespect. Admittedly, we didn't have a reservation but that is no excuse. We look e Dunston's because it reminds us of the family style steakhouses from a different era. The fact that we didn't think to make reservations is not a crazy prospect. The response we received from this woman and the man who came to assist her was appalling. They stormed around like spoiled children who were asked to do something they didn't like. When I asked about the response, we were belittled for not making a reservation. Instead of putting up with the attitude of the staff, we left and went to the other location. How a place that treats people like this stays in business is amazing. I would not recommend the Lover's location to anyone who considers common courtesy a virtue.

Always crowded; well-known by locals;friends, family steakhouse. Service was great, superb salad bar, fresh rolls. Salad bar and baked potato (served with a plate of toppings for your potato)makes a satisfying meal. Steaks and burgers are done to specified perfection. A great place to eat, would love to return!

Dunston's is one of those restaurants that you not only enjoy but you also look forward to your return with anticipation. Unique, comfortable, great service and wonderful food without pretenses. This is not a cookie cutter chain eatery and I am so thankful for it. I had a late lunch with the salad bar, potato soup, and a bacon wrapped filet cooked to perfection.

Seems weird to say that I had a high value dinner but the steak was just so-so. To explain, we arrived without a reservation at 7 p.m. on a Friday night. There was no wait for 2 persons (even though we specified that we didn't want to sit in the "smokey" main dining area). The side room had a spot, and we were immediately greeted by a terrific server, Logan. Water was provided and we pre-determined that one of us would be eating just salad bar. I ordered the small (5 oz) bacon wrapped Filet Mignon cooked medium with the salad bar added. Priced at $17, it seems to be a good deal -- but that depends upon the steak being cooked properly. Not this time. The salad bar is reasonably good. Lots of different types of lettuce as a base (with ice cold salad bowls) and various toppings to add (including things like macaroni salad, egg salad, bean salad, etc.). You can go back for seconds if you wish. My steak came out overcooked. It was somewhere between medium-well and well done. Tasty but no juices really, chewy, not melt-in-your mouth. I should have sent it back but chose not to. If there is a next time visit, I'll order it medium rare. If..... Dunston's gives the impression from the outside that it is a high-class steak house. It's not. It's marginal -- and insanely popular for reasons I cannot explain.

We went here as it was highly recommended by a few folks who live in Dallas... the place is very comfortable, staff very friendly and the food very delicious! If your in the Dallas area I now highly recommend it!

After so many years of driving past this venerable restaurant I went it. Maybe I was waiting for the years of nicotine to clear. Guess that is why the ceilings have been painted black. Wood walls and leather banquets and recent industrial style iron wagon wheel chandeliers make this a very traditional steak house joint. Not on any foodie list but good food nonetheless. For $13.00 you get a petite 5oz bacon wrapped filet and two sides. I had a baked potato and the salad bar. Wait staff are very good and the booths give some privacy to this local eatery that is popular with local families. Full bar in back. Steak was perfect. Popular for business lunches with different specials each day. Prime rib, liver and onions and chicken pot feature on different days. The prime rib will set you back at $30.00. This place is totally Old School, which like a pair of old loafers is familiar and comfortable.

In a city where Steak and Chop Houses are just mere miles apart, this family owned Dallas Family Restaurant is still watched over by its owner and it shows. You will walk into a family atmosphere that will result in one of your finest steak experiences ever. The next surprise? It will barely be more than a steak from a chain restaurant and Much, much better. Honestly, your tastebuds will be treated to a tantilizing experience and your pocketbook will not be hurting when you finally leave. This restaurant is in "middle Dallas" and barely off I35 on a major artery. Even if you have to drive out of the way to find this spot, you will enjoy some incredible food.

I am in town on business. A colleague from Dallas joined me for drinks and dinner last night. He suggested Dunston's, where he has been dining weekly for over forty years. This is my kind of place. It is reminds me of the steakhouse we used to go to when I was a kid in Oklahoma - warm, relaxed and inviting atmosphere, personable hostess and wait staff, and great food that is reasonably priced. I had two Beefeater martinis that were possibly the best I have ever had. We shared the roasted Brussels Sprout appetizer, which I could eat at every meal. We both had 10 oz. filets, rare and medium rare. They were done to perfection. Conversation was easy, as the noise level is low. I would ask the owners to keep doing what they're doing. Dining at Dunston's on Lovers Lane, for me, was like receiving a warm hug. I loved it, and I needed it. I will be back.

There just aren't many places like Dunston's on Lovers Lane left. It's been there since 1969, and it just feels like it's never changed. Of course, it has, but it feels comfortable and familiar. Some of the staff has been there since the beginning; some are brand new. And I love the food. Don't expect Bob's or The Mansion, but you won't be asked to pay for Bob's, either. It's a different experience. To us, that's just what it is. Every time we go to Dunston's, just us, or with friends, it's a great experience. So....to summarize....if you demand a sublime experience with impeccable service and dazzling presentation, you may be a bit disappointed. But if you enjoy great food in a comfortable environment which will quickly become a familiar environment, you'll love it. You will begin to notice some of the same people patronizing Dunston's over and over. That says something. The service can be excellent. It can be spotty. Roll with it. And we recommend the new Back Room, if you can get a table in there. Usually yes, but not always. I think that back room was added in 1973. We love Dunston's on Lovers. We're going now......

14 Oz Bone In Ribeye Prime Quality $25 With Salad Bar And Veggie Went With A Large Crowd The Treatment Was fantastic

I went here with my wife and in-laws. It was a reasonably disappointing experience. I'd heard good things, but Dunston's fell short in several regards. First, we were seated right next to the service station even though the restaurant was 15% full. Why? Second, our visit to the salad bar was less than amazing given that there was a large dead fly (drosophila) in the lettuce. At least I found it before I ate it. Third, my wife and I felt like our entrees were pretty mediocre (prime rib and chicken fried steak - the prime rib was not so tender and the chicken fried steak was soggy and bland). Forth, the collard greens were not very flavorful. Fifth, and I admit this is personal preference, the bread pudding was loose and sloppy (not our preference). Even the waiter said, "yeah we make ours more like flan"........and I would say loose flan at that. All of that said, the waiter was super nice and the service was good. Nonetheless, I'd recommend finding a different place to spend your money.

I enjoy this steak house for the salad bar, watching my steak/chicken grill by the chef, and the baked potato with all the fixings. This location has dim lighting, which I personally do not like. Luckily, I was seated at a booth with good lighting. The food was fast. Bread was served while I was waiting of my meat. In all a good steak house that I will visit again.

Dunston's has been here since 1955 in one form or another. It's a classic steak place, with a pretty limited menu, but all about meat. They have an excellent hamburger too. Reasonable pricing. Nice, big salad bar. All dark wood and black leather decor. I like it, but what I don't like is it's not that well ventilated, and I always have to wash my clothes after a visit here due to them smelling like a smoky grill for hours after. I wouldn't go out of my way to dine here, but always happy to join. Friends when this is the pick.

Terrific prices at this which is considered the Oldest Steakhouse in Dallas. There are two locations and bet the Harry Hines location is the oldest but you cannot go wrong here! Nice salad bar loaded with goodies but what i loved is that the steaks are flame grilled...rare these days! Dinner rolls are also fabulous! Enjoy

I have seldom heard of a review that says that "everything tastes great", but this is one of the few that you can enjoy. Dunston's on Lovers Lane (just east of Inwood Road) is a true historical place. It has been there for a "thousand years" (actually about 50 years!). It has a serve yourself salad bar. Basically that means, pile it as high as you can get it! Love the smell of fresh steaks on mesquite grill??? WATCH the cooks prepare the meats. The open grill is in the middle of the restaurant (and NO, it's NOT behind glass!). I've tried for years to find something that I don't like here, but without success. The wait staff are wonderful in giving suggestions on how to have meats prepared. The side veggies are FRESH (try the green beans!). The yeast rolls are warm and ready for you to slather with butter. They have a well equipped bar, but most folks have beer or wine. This is a Dallas Landmark. Don't miss it!

The food was phenomenal and the wait staff were excellent. Due to open grilling the general atmosphere is rather smoky and smells strongly of smoke. I don't mind it personally but we have small children. Probably not the best atmosphere for younger kids. Would make for a great date night.

Very good BBQ. I had the brisket & sausage special. The brisket was super tender and tasty. The sausage was smoked and delicious.

I patronize the other Dunston’s store when it’s convenient, and because I like it. I’d always heard about the family having another store over on Lovers, and I finally got a chance to give them a try. The front door is blocked by scaffolding, and a huge updating project, but the rest of the place is trying to move on as if nothing is different. I came in the back door, and it was a little confusing trying to figure out what to do in order to be seated. Once our hostess had put us in a table, our server came with deliberate speed. We ordered 5oz Fillet Mignon’s, a trip to the salad bar, and side items. Their salad bar had many things to choose from, and did not have a feeling of “cheap.” Their daily special was fresh corn cut off the cob, and sautéed to perfection, and it was exquisite. Dunston’s signature is that they cook over mesquite wood, inside the dining room, in custom made fire pits. The mesquite does give the meat a unique flavor, which is very good. My meat was cooked to perfection, and tender and juicy – more so than I expect from this cut of meat. The meal was served with a toast made from what looked like French bread, and it too was very good. I have always admired Gene Dunston, who was age 81 the last time I knew, out there on the floor with his servers working right beside them. Nothing gets past Gene, as he has been in this business since 1955, and the customer contact is crucially important. He serves Dallas Cowboys, and airline CEO’s and all other kinds of brass. I didn’t see anyone in this location that clearly is calling the shots, but the place was running well. Would I go back? Oh yes, if I’m in that neighborhood. It’s in the high rent district, and I just don’t have a need to be over there very often. But, the food was as good as I expected, the prices were very reasonable, and the service prompt and courteous. I’m much more likely to visit the other store, which has a different personality, and operates differently.

Four of us had lunch. Me, My husband, grand-daughter and her friend from Italy. Three of the steaks were overcooked and one was undercooked. The 3 overcooked steaks were dry-no natural juices. Someone rated the salad bar as the best in the area. They must not go out very often. It seemed small to me. There was also a complaint about bacon "bits" rather than real bacon. There weren't either when we were there. On the positive side, the waitress, June was fantastic. When we ordered our steaks from the "Top Chop" section, she pointed out we could get a similar steak for half the price. However, we were after quality & opted for the $22 meal rather than $12. Mistake on our part. After the first serving of wine, we did have to refill our glasses ourselves. We ordered bread pudding and cherry cobbler to share for dessert. The bread pudding was wonderful. There are too many steakhouses in Dallas to go to this one again.

Felt like I was walking into the set of Ponderosa, in the '50's. This is a cute place to simply kick back and share a meal in very relaxed surroundings. If you enjoy nostalgia, you will love the entire scenario!

Sorry the food was very bland and nothing special. There are much better steakhouses in the DFW area.

We were very pleasantly surprised! Dunston's has a great atmosphere... You can watch your meat being cooked over an open flame. The salad bar is great with very fresh ingredients. It's got old west charm & the service is great! If you use your iPhone navigation to find it, it sends you to the wrong side of the street... It's on the same side as Pier One. The price is very reasonable.

You need to visit for the experience. I felt like I was in another place and time relative to the other businesses in the area. The salad bar was very good, and the other food was good too. Our server did a great job. We never had to wait too long for anything, and he was very friendly.

Terrific prices and a lot of food for the money. I had the chicken fried steak and it came with 3 sides for less than $10.00. More food than I could eat. Would eat here again. Served alcohol but apparently wine only which I don't drink, would have liked to had a beer with my dinner.

This place is charming in its own way and the prices are cheap--VERY old school restaurant. We enjoyed our food, although it was nothing to salivate over. Steaks were good, not great, garlic bread was wonderful as were the baked potatoes. And the brownie a la mode for dessert was incredible. If you're in the mood for something simple and fairly priced, you might just like this place. LIKE, probably not love. But sometimes that's good enough.

This restaurant has been in Dallas for many years and the steaks are always great. They grill them over an open fire that is right in the restaurant where you can watch. The overall ambience of the restaurant is great too.

If you just want a good steak and a club like place to enjoy fast service and a fair price, this is the place. Mostly dinners that come here often and enjoy a staff willing to please, Best salad bar in Dallas

Fantastic salad bar and service. atmosphere takes you back in time. Sit in back room if available.

First time here for our entire group of 6 ladies, Sat in the back area and had a waiter that was personable and very attentive, so welcoming! Rolls and cinnamon butter were delicious to start and the salad bar is such a “lost in the current times” great touch and it was really good. The table had grilled salmon & bacon wrapped filet entrees and various sides, and they were all delicious. Try the squash casserole, it reminded me of thanksgiving! It the type of place you just don’t find anymore, and it is a place that I will be coming back to for the welcoming and cozy vibe, good food at a reasonable price, and friendly staff.

I rated it average because of the steak. The ambiance and the salad bar are PHENOMENAL!!!! We sat at the bar (which I think is the best place to sit)..Had a bottle of wine and dinner. The steak was cooked correctly (YEAHHHH), but it lacked flavor. It was bland, very bland. I may try the salmon next time, but would go back just to sit at the bar and marvel at the history of this place.

This time our food was way overcooked. Disappointed. Salad bar is great. Always fresh. The catfish was very small 1 piece. Should have more fish

We went there because there was a group of us and we did not want to spend a lot of money for dinner. Salad bar looked like it was from old steak house chains of the 1970s. 5 oz fillet was puny. We were with a large crowd, they seem to not have been able to handle a large crowd. Dinners were given to the wrong diners. Many mistakes made with the orders. Dinner rolls were given to us to make up for it, they were good. Restroom was dirty. As I left the restroom to return to my seat, I saw steak and a piece of potato on the floor in the dining room. Some of the chairs in the dining room had rips in the upholstery. I do not recommend eating here.

I wanted to bring a guest over from Fort Worth to eat a steak cooked over Mesquite, and I was shocked to the core to find the regular location on 8526 Harry Hines closed. Having not a clue what to do at the moment, I elected to go on over to the other Dunston’s on Lover’s Lane, which historically has belonged to the owner’s sister. Only recently I have been told that Mr Gene bought his sister out, and owns both stores. We showed up late on a Sunday for steak houses, but indeed this store was open. While it’s the same family running these very similar steak houses, they are shockingly very different. The store on Harry Hines has more cuts to offer, and the prices are definitely much more attractive. Both of them cook over Mesquite, but the Lovers store has a salad bar where the Harry Hines store does not. I was looking for an 8oz Rib Eye which cost under $20.00 which is available at the other store. This store didn’t offer much of anything under $20.00. I’m old enough that serving me the whole cow is wholly unattractive, and what I want is an extremely good cut of beef in human sizes. Most restaurants are only about ticket totals and WAY over portion, and over price their meals. It’s very hard to buy something of top quality that isn’t also HUGE. Warmed over steak (or fried fish) just isn’t an attractive thing to me, and I do not want a take home container. The service was prompt and good, and the salad bar containers were generous enough to make a meal out of a dinner salad. They make their croutons out of yesterday’s rolls, which many places do, but they didn’t quite get them toasted enough and they were just greasy and tough. The rest of the salad bar had good, fresh, appealing choices and lots of toppings to choose from. When our meals arrives, very surprisingly the potato toppings were served in pre-portioned little plastic containers, unlike the other store that gives you all you want on a carousel. It was adequate, but the missing generosity was definitely noticed. I ordered the NY Strip which is a cut I don’t care that much for, but it was the only right sized offering they had. When I got it they had cooked it medium well, rather than medium rare. It was late, and I wasn’t willing to put up with sending it back, but it was very dry and not as tender as a strip should be in a top-tier steak place. I very much enjoy going to the other store, and watching Mr Gene, age 82-ish still out there on the floor, amongst his servers, bussing tables, greeting customers, and making sure everyone knows he is there. He’s done that since 1955, and it’s a huge contributor to his continued success even after the main highway ran off and left him in 1968, and the airport left him in 1974. He had built such a reputation that his business never missed a beat. And, from a value standpoint he has a great product to offer for a working man’s price. I’ve known for years that these two locations had many differences, and indeed it’s true. I get much more satisfaction from their other store, but this one wasn’t bad. It’s just not what I expect from the standards they have set for themselves over many years. There’s a reason that Herb Kelleher, Colleen Barrett, and a host of Dallas Cowboys eat at the other store regularly, and that isn’t from lousy food or service. I’ll definitely be back, and I would recommend either store. But, the best values are found at the 8526 Harry Hines store, which is the one I consider to be the mother lode.

In a city and state that is full of steakhouses and steak eateries, this may be my favorite. Yes, you can find classier or fancier, but this place has an atmosphere all it's own. If you go to Dunston's and you are under the age of 75 you are a youngster. But don't let that dissuade you, the food is excellent. Give it a try. From the fried green tomatoes, 1 trip salad bar with killer ranch dressing, and the ribeye - you won't be disappointed.

wood paneling and pictures of military personnel surrounded our table as we sat down for a business lunch. Good food and reasonable prices. Like taking a step back in time

My wife and I visited at lunch earlier this week. We had been here before and it needed some serious updating, especially the seats in the booths. They have done some work and it is improved. Now, to the food. When we parked, we could smell the fire pit before entering. It's not unpleasant, but, it is unusual to be so prevalent in a restaurant. But, this is their thing and simply part of the visit. Your clothes might even have a little touch of the smell when you leave. But, the steaks, ours the filets, were done perfectly, the potato big and hot and the salad bar lacking nothing. Great rolls provided and the iced tea great. All in all, a very good meal. Value is super. Would I go back? Sure. I will likely sit at ta table instead of a booth; too cramped in the booths.

Our one night in Dallas we chose Dunston's for our Texas steak experience. We wanted an 'original' and it was close to our hotel. We should have arrived earlier on a Wednesday Night. It was after 8 pm so the salad bar was a bit thin. The sweet bread and honey butter is fantastic and comes promptly to all tables . My bacon wrapped filet was perfect. My wife's 10 ounce Rib-Eye was okay. Not a thick cut and quite good but not the over-the-top we were hoping for. I missed having the sour cream and chives and black pepper served by the waiter. No biggie but it's always a nice touch. Ambience was cool, stepping back into an eatery from a Deniro Pacino film from the 60's.Again the experience would have been better had we arrived early as the cleaner was out with his vacuum at tables beside us before we finished eating so we skipped dessert.

Had a good filet, very good salad bar, but the veggies are not very interesting. Service was prompt, and prices were very fair for a steak place. We had a little mixup with the bills, but our waiter corrected it quickly. We went on a Saturday night, and it was crowded. I would go back again.

Worst experience ever.... Judy Dunston will yell at you if you even give a hint of not being happy with your food. She will even threaten to throw you out! Out of six people at our table only one entree was warm.... all the rest were cold. You eat it or get out! No customer pleasing at this place. NEVER GOING BACK! That lady is really crazy and mean.

Thought I might see the “ Rat pack” walk in . This is a steak house that has been there for years, 1955, if I read it correctly. The decor is old style and the lighting is a bit dark. Seems to be a much older crowd frequents the restaurant . The food is very delicious , however , I was not sure why they * noted that the steaks were cooked without responsibility . Medium to well done? We ordered medium and ended up with almost a well done. Oh well, the steaks were still good , salad bar was very good and prices were reasonable.

A classic throwback steakhouse, however the menu offers much more than steak. MUST get the salad bar, that's a no -brainier. Try the fried catfish and the cheeseburger - both amazing. Wednesdays are half-priced bottled of wine, great promotion. Oh and enter from the back - parking is more abundant and the ambiance of coming in through the kitchen side is right in line with how things roll at Dunston's.

The interior smoke is enough to burn your eyes and so loud you can't hear the people at your table. Prices are inflated for what you get. Not sure how it's stayed open all these years. One & done for us.

Great steaks and salad bar without spending a fortune. We used to eat here in the 70's and they haven't changed a thing. No frills, simple steak, potatoes and salad. One drawback is they have an open hearth grill and our hair and clothes smelled like wood smoke when we got home.

Lunch specials throughout the week vary and are pretty good. My wife likes the 5 oz fillet. The salad bar was fresh with nice options. This is a steakhouse so that's what they do best. Good, hot baked potatoes are a favorite side. Although we didn't order onion rings the plate served to a nearby table was heaped high looked really good. Nice change of pace for us when we want a steak.

Ordered a steak, veggies and sauce for pick up. Paid, left. Realized that they forgot the sauce, I went back. 2 immature girls said they'll bring it, took my bag with my order. No apologies. Get my bag back, left. Went home,no sauce. Gave me the bag back as i handed it back to them. For real?!

I have been going here for years and Dunston's has best salad bar in Dallas which comes as part of your meal. This is not a fact high end place but a spot for regulars. Regulars know the back entrance to eat in the back room where the bar is located. Food consistently good and most of the servers have been there for years. All steaks grilled over mesquite so you may come away smelling a little smoky but well worth it.

Went there Saturday night and requested the Back Door Bar Room. The right choice for us. Great atmosphere of casual, but not rowdy. If you are looking for a trendy, romantic place, go elsewhere. If you want something above the chains, but not Ruth Chris or the other mega bucks places, this is it. Timely service, food was delivered promptly, just as ordered, fairly priced and I loved the old style salad bar with plenty of fresh choices. Will definitely return.

Went to this place on a trip to Texas. Great ambiance and even better food. Don’t mess around, order the steak. Any steak. Just get one. Add the shrimp if you want. 1 word of advice, pass on the salad bar. Order 2 sides. The salad bar was not worth giving up a regular side. The Dirty Rice was fantastic. Highly recommend this place! Very reasonable prices as well. I hope to go back at some point in my life!

I probably won't eat here again, mainly because I'm not usually in this part of Dallas. But my steak was over-done, pretty tough, and not very flavorful. I did like the salad bar, and if I did eat here again, I'd just have that. Other people at our table had chicken, which they said was also over-cooked.

First time at this location was tonight. Filet I got was OK, but dry. Baked potato was hours old. Friend had the t bone, and said it was the toughest one he'd ever eaten anywhere. Service could have been better. Other location on Harry Hines is much better.

Made our vacation visit to Dunston's and as usual it didn't disappoint. My husband and daughter found this location while moving my daughter here three years ago. You can always count on a good steak and an awesome salad bar. You can order all sorts of sides but I like to stick with the traditional loaded baked potato. Everyone's steak was made exactly as ordered and you can even watch as they cook them in the grill. Excellent service and tasty meals as always. See you next year!

We stopped here for dinner (just a few blocks off I35E) on our way from Denton to a show at the Winspear Opera House. It's a steakhouse with a wide range of steaks, all at very reasonable prices. Our steaks and sides were all cooked just right and very good. It's quiet so conversation isn't a challenge. An excellent choice for dinner when you're driving to downtown Dallas from the north. It's just a 10 minute drive on down to the arts district.

My wife and I have been eating here for years. This is a family run restaurant. If you are a regular, they know what what you drink and what you eat. This is also one of the few restaurants left in Dallas that has a true salad bar. For $14.95 you get a 10 ounce filet cooked over mesquite wood. How can you go wrong with that type of deal.

This Dallas institution maintains a fresh, small but tasty salad bar, complete with three types of greens, multiple veggies, and some non-vegan sides.

Large portions and very reasonable prices make this place an easy place to eat. Many of the staff have been there for long time! We usually order the Prime Steak. It is always well seasoned and cooked correctly. Often it is enough to split too!! Comes with vegetables that remind me of my childhood !

My wife, our son, and I had dinner last night at Dunston's on Lovers Lane in Dallas. We get there as often as we can. This place is a real throwback (and in a very good way) to times gone by. Really good steaks and seafood. And a fabulous Salad Bar as well. The prices are a fraction of those at other steakhouses. A 10 ounce bacon wrapped filet mignon WITH Salad Bar and baked potato - $17. You cannot beat that! There is also old fashioned personal service. Full Bar too. Call for reservations It can get very busy - for good reason.

By far the WORST STEAK HOUSE I have ever encountered anywhere in the U.S.! The service was atrocious! The waitress literally "threw" the basket of bread on our table, I am not joking, "threw!" Okay so maybe she had a bad day, but it got worst. We were really in the mood for a good steak dinner and willing to pay for it. This was not what we got. The steak was horrible! My husband's steak was way too rare, he dealt with it, but I sent mine back because it was cold and tough. The next one was hot but still tough. They offer a salad bar like it is some big deal. Who wants to eat at a salad bar? I expect that at Sizzler's. I had to ask for my water glass to be refilled, and for more of everything, we were basically left. In short, horrible food, horrible, horrible service and $78.00 bill to boot! We just looked at each other with shock saying, "We are paying $78.00 for this!" We paid and left and will never return. I am sorry to say I do not have one positive to give you regarding this restaurant. Save yourself the grief, eat somewhere else.

When we are in Dallas on business, the Dunston's on Lover's Lane is one of our favorite stops. It's a combination of good food, reasonable prices, and a neighborhood atmosphere. We always feel like we are probably the only people eating there (especially on a Friday night) who are from "somewhere else." Lots of old regulars, but also young families who are probably new to the neighborhood. We always order steaks, which are flame-broiled right there in the middle of the dining room. While they may not be the best steaks we've ever eaten, they are quite good for the price. Last time my wife had the tenderloin special and I had an eight-ounce sirloin. The tenderloin was better, but I wasn't disappointed with the sirloin. It comes with a salad bar and a baked potato. Our bill, before tip, was under $40. Once we ate at the Dunston's on Harry Hines, but we much prefer the one on Lover's Lane, and we will keep going back every chance we get.

People like it as its been there forever, I just don't think the steaks are anything special. Thin cuts with not much flavor. Lots of fat. There are so many better options.

I've been visiting Dallas for nearly 30 years, and for most of that time, have made a point of going to Dunstans at least once per visit - it used to be THE place in town for ribs, and real family atmosphere dining, with amazing service on the side. Now, for some unfathomable reason, they've stopped serving ribs, unless it's a Tuesday, and until they run out. What on earth would possess a place to remove such a staple offering. The grill used to be thick with ribs every time I visited - it must have been one of the most popular items. The menu is also very trimmed down, some great Texas oddities like 'calf breads' aren't there any more, and it now feels like quite a limited and timid menu. So bravo, I'll go somewhere else now when I want ribs. If that's not a Tuesday, your loss.

What a new dimension to Dunstons. Dining under a full moon was fantastic- food however my $28 ribeye steak was really bad - a terrible cut of beef. We love Dunstons but they need to step it up - quickly

This is a Dallas Institution. The decor is (authentic) 1970's and everyone would be disappointed if they changed it at this point. Unfortunately I haven't been able to go for several months because of my asthma (they cook the steaks right out in the open so there is a lot of smoke). I miss going here...

Great steak house. The steak was cooked perfectly to order and all the sides were delicious. It's usually busy so the wait staff always seem to be in a hurry.

Old-school steakhouse serving no-frills food. Great salad bar with in-house made salads and dressing and you can’t beat the price at six bucks.!

Went there with friends last night and had a great meal. Very reasonable pricing. Small but good salad bar. Various selections to choose from. Highly recommended

This place has gone downhill. The owner was rude. Judy Dunston serves poor qualities and she doesn't know wjat customer services is. This is not a Texas steakhouse. Go down the street for better service without an attitude. I will never go back. Dirty!

Extremely Poor Guest Service & Management Yesterday my partner through a going away party for a friend moving away. We had over 50 people coming to Dunston's for dinner and it turned into a complete "Trainwreck!" 1. We kept calling days ahead of time to confirm the number and no one was returning our call. We were hoping the room was set up properly. 2. Upon arrival, we noticed it was unusually hot in the restaurant. We asked the server what was going on and he explained the AC is not working. WHAT!!?? We asked him why no one had called us before we showed up with over 50 people for a party? He said he would inform the manager. 3. The manager arrived and we explained we have over 50 people coming for a party and there is no AC and it is 102 outside here in Texas. He explained they were working on it this morning and thats it.... We asked again why no one called us so we could make other arrangements? Again he said they were working on it this morning and he apologizes.... UMMMMM no.... We asked for some sort of compensation, he said he would do something... 4. The manager did nothing... no compensation difference and he never came back to the table. Dunston's has been in Dallas since I was a kid and this was the first time I received this kind of service and this will be the last time I will be returning to Dunston's. Sincerely; Christian Minnicks

They have wonderful roaches to eat there!! We were appalled when we had dinner at this Resaurant. The food was terrible and we saw three Roaches... These were live roaches and not water bugs... We could not believe it!! It is the worste place in Dallas to eat. If you are looking for a good place to eat near this restaurant, Celebration is right down the street. It is wonderful. The owner of Dunston's was very rude as well... She could have cared less... She said if we wanted a better quality steak and experience, we should have gone to a better quality restaurant. You don't have to tell us twice... I've told all my friends and family about the Dunston's Crew and I hope you all do the same... Peace, Love, and in Spirit... The unhappy customer...

Our family used to come here when our kids were young. Not much has changed. Unfortunately this time, we had a young waiter who was careless (just didn't care) and was just rude. He didn't ask for a drink order. Didn't ask about appetizers. Didn't ask if we he could help. Our steaks were good. Salad bar is fine. Collards were too sweet. Beans were not seasoned. Atmosphere is dark and 70s wood paneling. "Grilled" brussel sprouts were actually boiled and either waved over the grill, or mixed with liquid smoke. Not edible. There are so many good ways to cook sprouts. This is the worst. Fried catfish was good. Carrot cake was bad. Took a long time to get the check.

Me my partner and a friend went to this restaurant recently. The outside looks modern but the inside is very traditional for Texas. We were shown to a table. Staff are friendly and helpful even when they are rushed off there feet. The food was delicious a real proper Dallas steakhouse experience.

First time there; really enjoyed food and old school steakhouse atmosphere. Great bacon wrapped 9 oz. filet cooked perfectly over mesquite wood. Salad bar was exceptional with fresh veggies and real (not bagged) lettuces. Hot baked potato with delish yeast rolls. A great surprise to find this gem after many years in Dallas. Will return for sure.

I will never forget my experience at Dunston's Steakhouse on Lover's Lane. After sending back obviously spoiled chicken breast- I was REPRIMANDED (several times) by the cook, the server, and to my ultimate disappointment the owner, Judy Dunston. I was told that "there is nothing wrong with our chicken." Ms. Dunston continued by stating that she had 15 other orders for chicken breast that day void of complaint. This seemed rather impossible since the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived for our 11:45 reservation. As though this weren't insulting enough, I was expected to explain why I didn't like the chicken--to which Ms. Dunston replied, "Well, why did you order it?" She continued by saying "I've already lost money on YOU!" I was speechless and she was spitting mad (yes, over a piece of chicken). With her servers in tow, the owner walked away from our table...and did not return. I was in such a state of disbelief that I could not leave without expressing my disappointment. I began to calmly assess their service from my point-of-view. She rudely interrupted me by repeating the same sentiments (yep, the chicken), referencing the economy, and vainly referring to herself in 3rd person (You're about to piss Judy Dunston off!). This poor poor woman could not see beyond a piece of rubbery, spoiled chicken in order to realize the a value in a happy customer(s). Dunston's Steakhouse is a waste of your appetite, time, money, but most of all your dignity.

Our family had a good family dinner at Dunston's last night. We all had steak, their salad bar and either baked potatoes or roasted vegetables. The steak was good, cooked well and reasonably priced; the salad bar was full of fresh vegetables and tasty toppings; and while the baked potatoes looked good, the toasted brussel sprouts were amazing. I like the atmosphere of the first room (with its red banquettes) but the back room is good for large parties.

Okay.....been going here since childhood....decor is the same.....but the steaks are so tender and tasty, and the salad bar is fresh and varied, and the wait staff is doting!

As soon as I walked in, I couldn’t get past the smell. Couldn’t really put my hand on what created the smell, maybe old oil, dirt? I could see food on plates before I ordered and was not impressed. Looking at menu, I tried to find something safe to order. I ordered an overcooked chicken-fried steak, dry, chewy, no flavor. Thankfully the bake potato was hot as that was mostly my meal. Service was sub-par. Took awhile to get our orders straight and to wait on water refills. I won’t return but happy that others appreciate the atmosphere and food.

Please do NOT patronize this establishment. We went there for a "nice" steak dinner and got the most terrible, disgusting food we have ever tasted. I would rather have a steak at Denny's/IHOP or any other place than Dunston's. I was embarrassed that they actually served steak that was less than 1/2 inch thick. Our "waitress" was unexperienced, rude and filthy. She actually had dirt under her finger nails. The "table cloths" were plastic and dirty. I cannot believe that anyone were patronize this disgusting place. We witnessed the "cook" take our steak out of a cooler and cut open the plastic container that held the steak. It looked as though the steak came from HEB or some other place...save money and go to Sirlon Stockade/IHOP or Dennys....at least the food will be better, you will save money and the restaurant will be clean I will be making filing a complaint w/ the Health Dept. With all the choices of restaurants in Dallas, do NOT go here...you are better off (and cleaner) at Denny's or IHOP. YUCK, YUCK, FILTHY....the owner's should be ashamed of thereselves!

Have been dining here for about 25 years. Noticed over the last 2 or 3 years that the service is becoming spotty and the steaks are over or under cooked. Last night, the server was very personable and actually talked us into purchasing a $24 steak instead of our usual $12 steak. Ordered mine Medium and when he finally brought it to us, was definitely medium rare. My dining companion ordered the same steak medium rare and his was just like mine. After attempting to get our server's attention-which took entirely too long-he took my steak back to the grill. It returned the same. Had to eat around the edges to avoid the raw meat. Would think that a steakhouse that has been around for 60 years knows how to prepare food to the diner's expectations. Apparently they do not. And to add insult, the server NEVER apologized for the under cooked meat nor gave us a reason why the steak was not prepared properly. Will state that we ate late in the evening (in Dallas terms) and the restaurant was not busy. Other reviewers state about the old décor and needs serious updating-it does. But I find this as part of the charm of the restaurant.

The waitresses are loud and have an attitude, which was cute for a a bit, but wore thin pretty fast. You probably know the type: they act like they're doing you a favor. The dining room looks like it needs a good scrubbing and so does the men's restroom. My father always told that if the restrooms were dirty, the kitchen probably was too. The food wasn't memorable. I think the green beans came from a can and the spinach too. The vegetables were tasteless.

If you are a Steak Lover then you need to try Steak at Dunstons. Cooked right over a fire and every meal comes with a baked potatoe with all the fixings if you so choose! After tasting the first bite you will want to come back as often as you can.

Steak, side and salad bar all for under $15 bucks. I have eaten at this location going on 8 years and sometimes as much as 2 times a week. It goes without saying I love it. The one on Harry Hines is nicer but does not come close to the charm of this the Lovers Lane location. At first glance there servers are moody, but after a couple trips they remember who you are almost Dallas version of a local diner. From business meetings to lunch with friends, there is not other place quite like it.

I always stop into Dusnton's Steakhouse when in Dallas. They have a beautiful Santa Fe grill in the restaurant and you can watch your steak as its cooked.

My family always went to Dunston’s when it was primarily a neighborhood restaurant. We’d enter through the back door and sit in the bar area which was the smoking section. The bartender always recognized us and our drinks were at our table almost before we could sit down. When my folks passed away, I had the repast at Dunston’s. The steaks and salmon were always amazing as was the salad bar. I recently returned, sat in the back room and experienced the same amazing food. The service was exception; however, times have changed and the bartended had moved on. At any rate, Dunston’s is a fantastic place for mesquite grilled meat and fish.

Absolutely delicious! The salad bar is nicely stocked with homemade dressings. I had a perfect Medium cook 9oz bacon wrapped filet that was so delicious! Beautiful seasonings. Unassuming excellence by the look of the establishment from the outside. Seems small and dark; it’s perfect and comfortable.

Just, no. Old people that haven't ventured out into the world and experienced actual food that has been cooked properly and seasoned. No. Don't. Unless you fit into the said category.

While we were eating; a group "fled" the restaurant without paying their bill. Our waitress and other staff were dealing with that situation(understandably) and not too attentive. However, the steaks and salad bar were good. Would recommend if you don't want to spend a lot on a steak.

Let’s just start with the fact that Wednesday is half-price bottles of wine day. Can anyone say Caymus? The appetizers and entrées were terrific. Gabby was a clever and friendly server.

Visited for dinner on 15 November 2011 at approximately 1645. For some reason, I was having trouble hearing / understanding the older woman working at the counter. Been out of Texas for 5+ years, so it always takes my ears time to adjust to the Texas accent. She must have been asking me “how many”, “table or booth”, and when I hesitated, she tried to be funny by saying, “that’s OK, I can wait all day”. Laughed it off because that comment caught me off guard. I know a lot of people who would have just turned around and walked out. Sat in a booth, ordered an ice tea, and then a 16oz Prime Rib. My mistake. It was a Tuesday, and the Prime Rib is only available on weekends, so the waiter tells me. That factoid should be listed on the menu. Should have canceled my ice tea order and moved on. Instead, I ordered a 20oz bone-in Prime RibEye cooked medium for $24.95. Included salad bar, baked potato, and bread. Even though there were only 4 other customers in the entire restaurant, it took 20+ minutes for my meal to arrive. Everything looked good, but the steak was very difficult to cut because the steak knife was really dull or was it a really tough steak?. Having to literally saw into a $24.95 steak is a red flag. It was cooked medium, but it had no taste. I seriously enjoyed my baked potato and bread more than the steak. An average Ribeye from the grocery store seasoned with salt / pepper and cooked on my Weber charcoal grill has more taste, and I just cannot figure out why. Maybe what they are serving is so fancy that my untrained palette cannot appreciate it. These restaurants have been around for a long time, so they must be something right. It is just not the place for me. This will be my last visit to Dunston’s. Really have given them multiple visits to show an improvement, but it just has not worked out. Please check my 15 July 2009 review of their other location.

Recently took my mother in law to Dunstons. I've lived in Dallas for over 20 years and never made my way over to Dunston's Streak House. The food was excellent, old fashion salad bar and good ole fashion service. I highly recommend it as a place to take the family for a nice dinner. Dress very casual and enjoy good service and good food.

This was supposed to be be a nice Sunday night dinner for my birthday. We asked to have the grandchildren’s grilled cheese sandwiches brought out early because they were hungry. After 30 minutes, we asked again and they finally got their food. When the adults (5) got their food, half of side dishes week incorrect or missing altogether. Two of the steaks were cold and some of the side dishes were cold. It took 30 minutes to get refills of water. Overall, I cannot recommend this to anyone. I plan to call the restaurant tomorrow to let them know about our very negative experience.

I kid you not...if you don't eat here - you have missed the boat!!!!!!!!!!! Great steak - check Great salmon - check Great sides -check Great price - check check check Party of two happy!!!!

BEST SALAD BAR IN DALLAS!!!! BEST BACON WRAPPED FILLET IN DALLAS!!! Jesse S. provided excellent and friendly table service. The grilled mushrooms were plentiful and and full of flavor. On the down side, a new carpet and wall tile could spruce up the decor. If you are allergic to smoke (From the grill), ask to sit in the back.

Love the laid back atmosphere & country music in the back seating area. The salad bar is great, good steak, & service was very good. Not a fancy place, but good food.

Entrance has a fire place mantle with all these dolls.... DOLLS! Is this a steak house or my 83 year old great aunts house? - Ordered Filet Mignon, which was tough and full of gristle; out of four bites, only one was swallowed, the rest was spit out because it was like chewing gum. Ordered banana pudding for dessert, nothing special. Sat in a room with a fireplace; ventilation rather poor, wood smoke permeated the air (not a fan of that especially now that smell is in my hair.) My two cents....Skip it!

James (if memory serves me right) the manager was nice enough to seat my group in the banquet room (which has a pleasing ambience), Carlos was a friendly & attentive server, the quail appetizer was very good, and the Bacon-Wrapped Filet, while not the best steak I've had, was certainly more than adequate.

We placed an order through Postmates on 10/26/19 and the medium rare steaks we received were charred and cooked more than well done almost burnt. The meat taste like charcoal. There were also no side items delivered. See picture of the worst steak I've ever tasted.

This place was old nasty and disgusting. The place has an old smell to it. The waiter was not very attentive. We never received any bread while waiting on food. I ordered the steak and my girlfriend order the quail. The steak was burnt and the asparagus were cooked why you long. The quail was small and dry. The calamari was old and tasted like it was fried in fish grease. Our daughter had grilled cheese and fries and the fries were extremely cold. I will never come back to this place terrible terrible service and the silverware and dishes were not clean.

We have been here other times, but our most recent visit was pretty disappointing. The food was mediocre - vegetable special on Saturday night was baked sweet potato. Mine was about the size of a ping pong ball, and edged on being burned. My sister sent hers back and got macaroni and cheese, which was pretty good. The salad bar at $6 seemed overpriced for the selection. Service was minimal - clearly this guy had been around for years, but he was absent a lot. I made the mistake of getting the bread pudding - bourbon, I think. Truly the oddest dessert I've ever had anywhere, including my own kitchen disasters. It was very soupy, wet egg-white weird, with the tiniest bit of the actual bread pudding floating around. Oh, my. I know they have an OLD, loyal clientele (we felt right at home because we're old, too), but it was a pretty sad dinner experience.

Decided to go old school and try Dunston's on our last date night. We were promptly seated by a hostess who let us sit anywhere. We didn't have a reservation but didn't see the need. The restaurant was not even at half capacity on a Saturday night. Service was a bit slow and at first the waitress seemed a bit ... put out with our arrival. Not sure if she was cranky due to age or just cranky in general. After a long wait, she took our drink order. Her knowledge of the wine list was limited but that's fine. We orded a NY Strip and a KC Strip. Both were good. In the end, service became more consistent and friendly but first impressions by the staff need to be work on. Now, if you are coming here with the mindset that you are getting a filet at Bob's or Del Frisco's then this is not your place. We got a decent steak at a fair price. The salad bar is a standard salad bar. The bar can make about anything and we were able to sit by the tv to watch college football. We will keep this place in mind for future nights out.

Went in with 10 busy Monday. Took for freaking ever the waitress was missing in action most of the time. The sides were left off the meal . And to top it off see photo. Rare and medium rate steaks came out well. Or. Medium well Sadly this combined with the long time no see if the waitress is A. Downer

felt like a real local going to Dunston's. good salad bar and great service. a great down to earth kind of place that has been in business for years. my husband and i really enjoyed going. our server was awesome...we hear they have wine down wednesdays

The atmosphere was very pleasant, the wait staff excellent, the food was out of this world. I had their Chicken Pot Pie (Thursday special) with the daily vegetable, baked squash and salad bar. I truly enjoyed my visit there with my daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. I recommend this place to everyone. Great food, great people and great atmosphere and decent prices. Can't beat that combination.

We celebrated my friends birthday with dinner at Dunston’s steak house. Although we didn’t have a reservation, they were able to seat us in a reasonable amount of time. The food was delicious and I loved that they had a fantastic salad bar. Our server Charles couldn’t have been nicer or attentive. He is an extremely hardworking individual. Since it was Saturday it was very busy. I would recommend making a reservation.

Excellent service and wonderful food! You are treated like family. Durell is the manager, and he certainly takes pride in his work. Ask for Linda, Roberto, or Ann as they will take great care of you. We are regulars and sometimes go twice a week. Good value and relaxing. Enjoy!

This place was highly recommended. So, we decided to make this our last stop before heading to the airport to catch our flight back home. We ordered the 10 filet mignon, which was very reasonably priced. It was cooked exactly as we had ordered, which is hard to do on such a thick cut of meat! The salad bar had good variety & the waiter we had was very attentive & helpful with making recommendations. We will most certainly return on another visit to the Dallas area!

I try to get here at least once a month. it has been re fitted lately and some of the older booths are replaced and everything is spiffed up. the salad bar is one of the best around and the steak is the best hands down. there is a back room bar that is a Dallas institution. although parking is limited in the front there is a vast parking lot at the back and a rear entrance.

This place has been an institution in Dallas for many decades so we were saddened by our last meal here. We ordered three steaks, none of them were prepared correctly and one was inedible. Service was good and the manager handled our complaint well. It makes us sad that our steaks were so bad that I don't see us going back for a while. The prices are great, but it doesn't make up for the poor quality of the meat and preparation.

These people have too much business. I wanted to purchase a gift certificate for a friend and they would not accept my credit card over the phone. I question they business operations and their customer service. I would not dine at this place.

Recommended by the staff at the Magnolia Hotel as a great casual steakhouse! We were surprised to see Dunston's in the middle of an older strip mall. Plenty of parking in front of restaurant, with additional parking across the street. Walking in -you are quickly surprised by a huge two story open dining area with the open fire kitchen and salad bar area. We were directed to the back room which had a bar area, and 1 story little darker area, but amazing historical family pictures from their military experience. Old, but great atmosphere. Staff was so friendly, welcoming, and directed us to the steaks we were looking for. We ordered drinks, salads, and then what turned out to be - Two incredibly cooked Bacon Wrapped 9 oz. Filets. Served with a baked potato and vegetables. Great wine selection and full bar. They had several custom cocktails. We did Makers Mark and a Barbara (Cocktail). Fresh bread, salads, just the place we were looking for. We wanted casual, great service, and great taste. We got it! Their menu was diverse and offered numerous fish, chicken and steak entrees. Our waiter Jose T. was attentive, friendly and guided us to what we wanted. Thank you Jose! If you are in the area, you can go wrong stopping in. You will love Dunston's. Old fashion, darker, family environment, great for couples and kids. Romantic night, fun night with friends, or just a family dinner - there are many options, but their steaks are great. Thanks Jose and team for a great night.

Terrible! start with shrimp cocktail=4@$17! then my order of 6 oz filet=medium came out (after at least a 20 minute wait, not seeing our waiter all this time) bloody! left my mashed potatoes(side dish) finished it-steak came back cooked this time but (and I realize I ordered the small one) was this little dinky piece of steak with fat in the middle-very disappointing! And this was early friday afternoon=not busy at all! I will not be back-much more competent steaknouses to choose from

this is our go to place when we want good solid food. they make all their food from scratch including salad dressings. I think the only thing they buy pre-made is pickled okra and pickled beets. even though it kinda a step back in time, the food is always good.

We went here believing we'd get a great steak. It was disappointing - nothing special. Medium well steak came rare, one-trip salad bar was little more than lettuce with a few toppings, and our middle-aged waiter didn't do much waiting. Had heard reports that (a different) Dunston's was very good, so was disappointed. Then, when turning to leave, went to use the ladie's rest room. Oh, my gosh! Strange hardly describes it. Small, with just a little deadbolt lock up high for privacy. You sidle in to the toilet area, and they have lined this ultra small space with wall to wall mirrors (on all sides!), 6 inches from your face. Scary, to say the least. Couldn't wait to get out of there.

As we were traveling cross country, one of our stops was in Dallas Texas. What to eat, Texas BBQ or famous Texas Steak. Well since most BBQ joints closed at 9 we opted for steak and chose Dunston's and we couldn't have been happier. From the moment we stepped in we felt welcome like we had been coming here forever. Isaac R, our server, and the guy making excellent suggestions, made us feel like family. All of Isaac's suggestions were spot on, from the robust Cosmos to the local beers, he did no wrong. As for the steaks and sides, they were very well priced, cooked to perfection and so full of flavor. The sides proportions were huge and equally delicious, especially their homemade green beans. Save yourself some money and don't miss out on this local gem. They are equally as good as any $$$$$ steakhouse in Dallas.

Great food and reasonably priced. As soon as you walk in the wood fire grill smells fabulous. Old fashioned salad bar was a welcome surprise and fully stocked with goodies.

Great place for good, inexpensive steaks. The place looks like you are stepping back into the late 60s, which tells you it's old school. There is a huge pit in the back where you can watch the steaks being grilled on mesquite, which by the way the place smells great. The staff has been there for years, they are extremely friendly and attentive.

Look, if this were a breakfast joint it would be Dennys. If you are looking for a "steak" they have one. Nothing to drool over. Nothing that will make you barf. If you want a good steak, go somewhere else. If you just want steak, go there, roll the dice and if its bad, you likely wont remember it in 3 weeks.

Dunstan's has not changed in years (aside from becoming smoke-free). Sit in the back with the regulars, order a steak and salad bar, you won't be disappointed.

If I were to describe a typical timeless Texas steakhouse, this would be it. I doubt anything with decor, or basic menu has changed in 30 years, except prices, which despite increases, are still quite reasonable. Our waiter was articulate and attentive, and food, including steak, was prepared as ordered. The only reason I have rated suchly is that there is nothing new here—-part of the joy of eating out is trying the “new and different”.

Great steak, very nice inside and it was neat to watch the steaks being cooked.

Ever been to a restaurant where the food was good, but the service not so much? Yeah, that is Dunston’s. I feel like we could have had a much better experience had we had a different waiter. Farhad just wasn’t hitting on much. It started out a little rough when I ordered a vodka gimlet with Belvedere. He told me they didn’t have Belvedere vodka. When I told him it was listed on their menu as an option he didn’t believe me and I had to show him. Then he wasn’t sure if they served gimlets. It went downhill from there. He brought me back lime juice and vodka with two blue cheese olives. I declined the olives. After adding some table sugar it was passable. My boys ordered the cowboy appetizer and they loved it. The smoked sausage was nicely browned on the outside, was juicy and had a great flavor. The cheddar cheese was room temperature and perfect. My son ordered the salad bar and the waiter never told him the plates were at the bar. He sat there for a while waiting on a plate. This was our first visit so we didn’t know how things worked. My husband finally flagged the waiter down and asked. Our entrees were served by a delightful young lady. She brought pepper vinegar for my son’s collard greens and A-1 sauce for the hubby’s steak. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. I had the ribeye, hubby had the filet and son did the t-bone. My baked potato was served with butter only. The table next to us received a basket with sour cream and bacon for their potatoes and they got bread. Our guy never came back so I couldn’t ask about it. With about 3 bites left, our waiter asked my husband if he wanted bread. He said no and I said I would like some. Apparently that was not to be so because he never showed up with any. When he walked back by I asked for water (my glass had been empty for a while) and he sloshed some in my glass getting a lot of water on the table. I was done and asked for the check. So, in sum the food was good but our waiter was not. We were really looking forward to a quintessential old school Dallas steak dinner and I was very disappointed. It could have been so much better.

We were visiting Dallas from the NE and tried several restaurants. This was by far the best in food, service and price. The Hilton staff had recommended this restaurant. We were seated promptly and the menu had lots of options with very reasonable prices. We thought everything was al a carte but were pleasantly surprised that you get 2 side dishes with your steak plus nice warm bread with cinnamon butter and regular butter. I have allergies and they cook the steaks to order so I could order whatever I wanted. Most steakhouses I am very limited on my options. When our steak came (we ordered the filet wrapped in bacon 9 oz for 17.00) the waitress asked us to cut into our steak to check the temperature and stood there. As soon as I cut mine she said it needed one more minute and took it back to the chef. What service! Within 2 minutes I had my steak back and it was perfect. Most restaurants you have to wait forever to get someones attention and then plead with them to refire the steak. We were very impressed with the service. For sides hubby got a potato which they served with a basket full of toppings on the side including 2 containers of beef bacon. We both got the salad bar which was excellent. I got the baked squash which was ok just different than we ever had before. It was baked summer squash with some sauce. Our waitress was Stephanie and she was a lovely, very friendly woman. When we were almost done she talked to us and was very helpful telling us about sights to see in the area. Our total bill was 45.47. Best meal we had in Dallas. They also had another room where people were having a birthday party. They were having a good time but the noise didn't come over into the restaurant area. They have an open kitchen. The only downside was when we got back to our hotel our clothes smelled like smoke from the open kitchen. If we are ever back in Dallas we will definitely visit this restaurant again.

Dunston's Steakhouse has been in Dallas for many years and is well known for its fine steaks and service. In order to celebrate my husband's birthday, we made reservations, with another couple, for dinner. The hostess mentioned the birthday celebration as we were being escorted to our table. The service was extremely poor. We had to get silverware from another table and ask our server for water, drinks and even a drink menu. Everyone's steaks were thin and overcooked. My husband's birthday was never acknowledged by another staff member. Looks like we'll still be looking for another steak restaurant.

Eatting at Dunstans is like going to your very favorite restaurant with family or friends and knowing whats on the menu. Food is consistent; salad bar is generous; wait staff are delightful! If you are a regular, you will know to ask for a table in the "back room".

We stopped in for lunch at this venerable steakhouse...what a flashback in time. It is smokey because of the open grill. Salad bar was adequate, but not gold star. She had been hungry for liver and onions, and had memories of eating here in the past. Yes, it was good. Service was pleasant and prompt. Old fashioned place in decor, menu, and demeanor, but overall a good experience.

We been patrons off and on for over three decades. The vibe, cocktails and salad bar outshine the steaks. The kitchen is a bit heavy handed so expect medium well when ordering medium rare. Even the best cuts come out dry and chewy, but the price is half that of the expense account places. Salad bar sill shines while the sides are steam table quality. If you want a modestly priced night out with your neighbors when DCC is closed this is still place for North Central Dallas.

This has been around for a long time but after our visit I was totally unimpressed. We had a reservation but it was not busy when we arrived. We stood by the entry a full 5 minutes before someone came to seat us. Our server seemed put out by our questions and that we wanted a few minutes to look the menu over. It was our first time there. When he did take our order it arrived in a reasonable time and was as ordered - delivered by another server. He didn't come by again until we had finished our meal. Again, he was rather abrupt so we decided to skip desert. The food was actually pretty good and serving sizes were very adequate. Too bad the service was barely civil.

Hiram is such a gentleman and a cutie. Great buss boy! His service was one of the best I have ever had, he was sweet nice and patient. He deserves a raise!!!!

Almost a historic landmark, Dunston's on Lovers has been in this location forever, which, in and of itself, indicates staying power and loyal client base. I was here for a friend's birthday party. Would not have been my first choice of restaurants because I am gluten free (not by choice) and wasn't sure they would be able to accommodate my dining conundrum. But accommodate they did, pleasantly and eagerly, rendering a delightful evening with friends and delicious food. The dining room was a tad smokey and my friends were commenting about leaving and smelling like grill smoke. Other than the faint smokey dining room, for a casual, modestly priced dining experience, Dunston's is a great restaurant.

In a city that seems to have as many steakhouses as people; Why should Dunston’s Steakhouse make your list? For me, It’s not just the wonderful cuisine at sane prices, nor the nostalgia of casually dining in one of the oldest restaurants in Dallas; serving customers for close to 70 years now, it’s also the entire staff’s commitment to excellent service. Not many restaurants large or small can boast; their owner, 95 years young, shows up, puts on his apron, and rustles up meals with the crew, but you’ll find Mr. Dunston at both locations Daily. If libations, dining alone or covering with others at the bar are your thing; don’t worry, they’ve got you covered at their spacious, and well stocked bar, “TBD Bar” which features a separate rear entrance. Keeping up with the times, and those who crave a bit more, you’ll find the festive vibes of TBD lounge just a doorway and curtain away. You’ll be glad you stayed longer! If we’re enjoying Dunston’s Steakhouse on the same night, say hello! I love that! Xoxo Lorenzo!

Had a great dinner and all orders came out perfect. Service was great and courteous. The only thing we didn’t try was dessert because we were too full.

This place is very popular, and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I belong to a group that meets for dinner once a month, and we'll go here 2-3 times a year. Lots of people rave about it, but I just don't get it. Menu is very tired and unimaginative. The steaks are at least cooked the way you order them, but they are average at best. Baked potatoes in aluminum foil have no flavor or texture. The vegetables are awful -- canned, over cooked green beans for example. The salad bar comes straight out of the 1950's with a very limited selection. Desserts are average. It's OK, but there are so many good restaurants in Dallas, why go here? You can do much better for the price.

Salad bar was really good. Steak cooked perfectly and very tender. This is a great go to place in Dallas area. Restaurant smells like the wood grill they use to cook on.

My first time ever coming here & it sure won't be my last time coming here. The service was excellent , the food was super delicious & my overall experience was very impressive. For it to be a very affordable steakhouse was what shocked me the most. Everything is very reasonable priced & tasty. It's not super busy or overly crowded, the location is great since it's near by a shopping center where you can go & walk off all those calories that you ate lol. The service was excellent our host was very friendly & nice. Our waiter was on top of things & always made sure that we had our order fast, hot, & fresh. Kuddos to all the hard working kitchen staff whom you get to see right in front of you since they have their grills set up in front of the restaurant & visible to all. The salad bar had lots of choices to choose from since it's very highly recommended. If you're in the Dallas area you should definitely come out & try this place. It says that they require reservations but not really they can always work you in regardless & it's a very casual dress code, so no need to come all overly fancy dressed unless your significant other forces you too.

while i have loved this place since childhood, it is no longer a favorite. first they have crammed many more tables into the back. although we had a reservation upon arrival we couldn't have a booth instead got a table so small and cramped everyone had to get up to let me in and out. the table had not our name but the name of a party for 8 o clock, so obviously we were supposed to gobble the food and rush out. then the drinks order, a black Russian is Kahlua and vodka not too hard but apparently too hard for the bartender. food wasn't quite as good as i remembered and the 5 oz steak is now really tiny about 6 bits but still things are going reasonably ok. and then the bill came. as we are a arty of 4 we just split the bill four ways. also not too hard and fairly standard even at a fast food place. not so here the bill was around 150 reasonable then we got our cards back and each was 83.xx now for the bill to be over 300 is not okay. typically this is also easy to fix. waiter cancels the bills and recharges the correct bill. the waiter disappears. we wait ask for a manager wait some more. supposed manager appear says he is sorry but no cancelled charges appear. we ask for another manager. now it has been 20 minutes or so. mangers all spend their time defending the waiter who has been there a year. frankly who cares mistakes happen. how you handle it is what counts. the bottom line we never got the cancelled charges. the manager finally took off 2 desserts and gave a 20% discount. the divided bill was never correct as we all got different amounts and one got zero. my advice is check your bill carefully. or better yet find another favorite. obviously Dunston's has changed hands and this crew is benefiting from the reputation which won't work for long.

Visiting Dallas for 10 days and was excited to go to Dunston's after reading reviews. Went to the Lovers Lane restaurant which was busy but not packed on a week night. The dim light didn't hide the nastiness and unkept condition of this place nor the extensive missing ceiling tiles. The cooks all had a "don't care" attitude and demeanor and used the microwave. What is a microwave doing above the steak grill?? The place had the aroma of overheated fryer grease. The medium rare prime rib we ordered came to the table raw and bleeding. We sent it back and they put it in au jus for a couple more minutes then re-served to us. I noted a lack of conversation between the wait staff and the cooks who looked bored. The salad bar featured fake bacon bits but the lettuce was fresh and crisp. The tomatoes were unripe. Anyway, the bread was good but the rest was well below mediocre. The cap on the night was when our waitress tried to palm our credit card then claim we didn't place it in the bill wallet but was willing to comp the meal. It magically appeared in her hand after we walked her path to the register and called for flashlights to search for the card. Her comment after it appeared was "oh and that was a good one too." We won't go here again.

I have just witnessed the single most appalling display of customer service ineptitude. My fellow coworkers and I went to Dunstons for lunch. Most of us ordered the steak, however two opted for the grilled chicken. Both found the chicken’s taste to be “off” and possibly spoiled. One opted to send it back to get something else. She called for the waitress and told her she did not like the chicken. The waitress seemed to take this reaction personally and informed my coworker that there was nothing wrong with the chicken. She sent over the cook who had a similar reaction stating there was nothing wrong with the chicken. The cook stormed off and then the owner Judy Dunston came to the table. When my coworker calmly stated again that she did not like the chicken, Mrs. Dunston then berated my coworker stating “there is nothing wrong with our chicken.” “Many people have ordered the chicken today” and she invited my coworker to see the computer to view that for herself. She also asked “Why did you order the chicken” and stated “I’ve already lost money on you”. Mrs. Dunston did not offer her another meal; she left the table and did not return. My fellow coworkers and I were astounded at this display of utter disrespect and from a “service” industry no less! After most of us left, my coworker stayed behind to speak again to the owner. I am told that Mrs. Dunston continued to stand by her chicken stating again that “there is nothing wrong with the chicken”; “you wasted a perfectly good meal.” When my coworker continued to stand her ground, Mrs. Dunston then stated “You are about to pi$$ off Judy Dunston!” Needless to say we will NEVER go back there again. However I feel compelled to share this experience with others lest anyone else incur the wrath of “Judy Dunston” over a piece of chicken.

Parkie establishment for 30+years, wood burning grill indoors gives Dunston's it's unique amber flavor both food and atmosphere. Old time texas steak house decor, funky, rough around the edges. I will only order the filet of beef ( comes in 3 options, all are good) over the many years of visiting Dunstons the meat selections have slipped. Rib eye ( fatty, chewy), sirlion ( thin, flat, tough). Stick with filet, it's awesome with classic side options baked pot., spinach, mac and cheese..etc. Many friends enjoy the ribs, salmon, chicken dishes. Fried oysters are great, mushrooms tasty. Salad bar is from the past, tons of choices, excellent fresh ingredients as good as the beef. House wines are reasonable priced, back room has full bar. Large side room for meetings, parties. Overall a very reasonably priced steak house and a decent meal, get the filet. Trust me.

We visit here quite often because of the consistency in the steaks and service for the price. Not the fancy place most people want however worth every dime.

Long Time Local Steakhouse. Harry Hines location is original. Lovers Lane has the same decor from the 1960's! Open grill so you can watch them cook your steak. Need to have reservations on weekends. Lots of weekly repeat customers. Good salad bar. Solid steak entrees with variety of sides. Some interesting specials like quail. Can have a nice steak dinner with sides and salad for under $20.

Distinctly average Ordered the ribeye and it was like chewing leather The sides were luke warm and we were warned of most of them by the waiter who told us they were mostly canned. It’s a shame because we were looking forward to steak in Texas. I’m sure the one they’ll serve on our flight home tonight will be better than this was. A must miss, in our view.
The waiter was rude & off putting…
We love and adore this place & have been going here for years but tonight was disappointing to say the least... Our waiter’s manners were poor & he just wasn’t a great waiter & lacked asking us if we had everything we need before leaving the table. Every single time I asked for something he would say “no… haha just joking….yes.” It got annoying after the first time… I look young, I get it. Let it go! It shouldn’t affect how I am treated when I am out in public especially when I am a paying customer. I’m 30 but look 20. But when my mom would ask for something she would get a respectful answer of “yes right away!” Just seemed off and left me feeling almost ignored. I asked for cornbread which is complimentary and we received the tiniest corn bed with not one but three things of butter?! I needed more free bread with my butter! When did they become sticklers for how much bread they give you… ridiculous! Especially after they also have raised the price of everything on the menu too to the point we’re it was extremely noticeable. Yep I also took a picture of our very sad tiny cornbread because it was laughable!!
