Cool!

By mjsTwinCities |

We came here specifically for the oysters on a half shell and this place did not disappoint. We got a variety and each was so fresh and good. We really enjoyed trying the different varieties. We also shared a bowl of seafood gumbo. That was a bit too peppery for me, but certainly the seafood in it was very fresh and perfectly cooked. We would go back if we get back to Portland. Nice knowledgable staff too. They know their oysters!

Scrumptious--right on target

By redjewely2 |

We read great reviews about this restaurant and decided to give it a whirl. Fantastic food, drinks and service. Especially impressive? We knew we had to come in late and my friend called ahead to see if they'd save him a soft shell crab (since we heard they run out). They did it and had it ready for us when we came in. He had the Hurricane and I had the drink with the chili vodka and pineapple. Both delicious- strong and a kick. We sampled a bit of everything. Oysters, of course.Best fried pickles ever because the batter was very light and the salty pickle flavor came right through. Fried okra, hard to get here in the NW, was excellent. The red beans and rice with sausage were particularly outstanding. Full of meat, smoky flavor, deeply satisfying. So glad we went here. My friend is from Mississippi and he had a good taste of home. The only thing missing? Cornbread to go with it. Would go again in a heartbeat. Try it!

A Funky PLace (in a good way)

By Traveler_from_Dallas |

We went there just for oysters and were delighted. Tried them all and couldn't decide which we liked better so ordered another round. Really enjoyed this place

Almost nailed it

By Rosalitathevagabond |

Nice open atmosphere, with regional new orleans delta music, relatively authentic recipes, but just a hair off traditional southern cajun food. The oysters were a bit pricey but delicious. I would recommend it to anyone, but being a southern boy myself I'm a tad picky when it comes to regional food. The catfish was delicious, but a bit over salty for my taste. Would have been easier to pallet if it came with a side of veggies. Great place to go with a group for a seafood lunch with a southern twist.

fun

By Teresa M |

we returned masked up yesterday for lunch inside, and sat by the window...the masks quickly came off.......i had an oj mimosa, and my partner had the absinthe......the atmosphere was festive, and we just watched the folks walking by on n. wms.....next, we shared the wedge salad, and i had the shrimp po boy/fries, and she had the catfish po boy and collard greens...the staff is great and fast...the food/drinks were good....thx so much....

Delicious

By Sharon M |

We had a very tasty lunch last week at EaT. Ethan was the perfect host. The food was creative Cajun cooking with just enough spice to be delicious and not overbearing. We had oyster shooters, pork rinds, an oyster po-boy, turtle soup, and gumbo. The Bloody Mary was quite spicy and beautifully presented! We wish we lived locally to make this a go-to for lunch or dinner!

Straight out nasty, southern disaster!

By Troy D |

This would of have to be hands down the worst meal I have consumed/experienced in my travels! For starters the waiters couldn’t be bothered setting the table for us when we arrived. We had no cutlery or napkins when our starters were brought out and only received some when we asked. Secondly, every meal we ordered had a problem. The seafood gumbo tasted like it had been scrapped off the bottom of a burnt, charcoaled hotplate. It was feral. The Po boy was gross and had some nasty arse seafood present on it. The fries we soggy and oily. The prawns could of been mistaken for burnt rubber and were as hard as eating your way through a bag of jolly ranchers. The jambalaya was a cold gluggy rice fest that lacked any kind of southern flavour and tasted like yesterday’s scraps. Overall, your money is best spent at other places we you can get more bang for your buck. Lastly, our waiter was obnoxious and didn’t check to see how our meal was going as I think they knew they were serving us up tripe! Horrible place to eat!

My first one star review

By NW_Gourmet |

After 4 years of reviews I must unfortunately give this well know hangout for oysters only one star. The turtle soup was very thin and not worth having again. The redneck oysters were the only high point and were well done. The oyster po'boys had an off smell that my wife found offensive. The accompanying fries were very over salted. When we asked the waiter if the po'boy oysters were fresh or jarred, he admitted they were jarred. We were the only patrons at lunch while tasty-n-sons next door was very busy. Go next door.

Cool place, average food

By CaroltheMTLfoodie |

I liked this place, buy more for the ambiance than the food. Have a drink and the fried okra and chat with the barmen, but that's about it.

must visit it

By Globetrotter-RV |

Great place, minimalist and original furnishing. really nice people and an amazing choice of oyster that you can match with some great local beer, a good wines selection or some cool cocktail! not too expencive

Loved the food! Service as slow as could be.

By LostEdge |

Headed out midweek while in town on business. Heard lots of great reviews about EAT. There was only 1 other table the night I arrived so I sat at the bar. The bartender/oyster shucker was really nice but he was incredibly slow. Got 2 dozen Oysters. Local NW Oysters. All so good but it literally took him 25 minutes to crack a dozen. I used to work at an Oyster House growing up-had I not been by myself it probably would have been ok, but 1 hour for 2 dozen seemed a little much. They specialize in New Orleans Classics/Creole and the Jumbalaya and Shrimp Etouffee were on point! Overall I loved the local beer and food and enjoyed the banter with the bartender. The only issue was the fact that I was in there for 3 hours. The decor in the restaurant is really cool, the beer fridges are all old school fridges they have repurposed...pretty cool. I would like to get back for the Sunday Jazz Brunch.

If you love oysters a good one!

I loved everything about this place and the oysters were delicious and fresh, only thing is the price was just a bit high...delisious though.

Sunday Brunch a bust

By Tanya W |

Heard and read lots of good things about this place and the brunch seemed like a great place to start. Arrived shortly after 11:00 and there were no tables. The three of us sat in the back at a table for two until a larger table opened up. However we sat at this small table for about 20 minutes before we were even brought water, which was warm. By the time the waiter came by to take our order, they were out of the roast beef debris and the fried chicken, which were the two items we had come to try. Ordered oysters and the ham with red eye gravy biscuit. The biscuit was so hard I couldn't even cut it. The red eye gravy on the biscuit looked like someone had just dragged the biscuit across a dirty griddle. The only part of my meal that was done right was the side salad of spinach and arugula which had a delicious vinaigrette on it. However, they did make up a dozen Oysters Rockefeller for our table and I am told they were delicious. All in all, I want to believe that I was just there on an incredibly busy Sunday morning. I think this place has great potential because I see reviews that are almost stellar. I will try this place again for dinner, but will find another brunch option.

Felt more like NOLA than Portland

By MnM1112 |

Stopped in hungry for happy hour and to watch a game. Would love to live near a place like this. Happy hour specials weren't displayed at all but as we asked about what was offered on the website, all specials were honored. The oysters were great, salads good; the gumbo was awesome but I'd ask for rice on the side next time to have a chance at tasting just the gumbo base. Only disappointment was the chicken legs, which were highly breaded ( ok for a bar snack) but undercooked, which was not OK. Friendly vibe and competent but laid-back service from Shawn.

comfortable and delectable

By Teresa M |

we hadn't been here for a few yrs, and wanted to return following the juneteenth parade and festival. i began with a dixie beer, and my partner had absinthe. both hit the spot. next, i ordered the mixed greens and oysters rockefeller, and my partner had the frog's legs with the same salad. the food was delicious. only one criticism: just wish the salad had other lettuce added to the arugula, kale, spinach, and red leaf to contrast. the server was fun and informative.

Amazing Creole/Southern food

By oregonblt |

Did this for my husbands birthday. Everything we ate was amazing but even on a groupon, which is how we found it, it was pretty pricey. Garage type atmosphere, very old rickety folding tables and a mismatched worn seats that looked like everything came straight out of a garage sale. We were way overdressed but when we read the menu and website thought we were gonna walk into something totally different. Service was wonderful, waiters were extremely attentive. Might hit it up again for the +++'s but not going out of my way to. It just cost too much.

Yummy Southern and Cajun food!

By TnEShlaes |

A great place for a Sunday brunch. Casual atmosphere and a Bloody Mary Bar on Sundays. Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Grits, even beignets! There is even seating outside for those rare sunny days in Portland. Live Jazz music on Sunday mornings. They make some of their own hot sauces too!

Oysters, beer and New Orleans cuisine!

By Sillydg |

Nothing fancy here, just great food and beer. Indoor and outdoor seating. There's a smoker on the sidewalk and great Po Boy sandwiches inside. Jax and oysters. What could be better!

Great Oysters, ok for everything else

By Nicole H |

My husband and I went here a little over 2 weeks ago. We ordered the pickle chips to start. And it was really salty. My husband loved them. I ordered the Jambalaya and was very disappointed. I was expecting some spicy flavorful cajun food. It was bland Oregon-ized cajun food. The only good part was the oysters in it. We got some fried oysters which were really good. And some of the broiled oysters, which were also really good. I made he huge mistake of ordering the bread pudding for dessert. It was one of the most disgusting things. It was like a piece of thick bread(maybe a cake) on a plate with some bland cream sauce over it. When I think bread pudding, I think of the crumbled kind you see EVERY where else... To summarize: the oysters were amazing, everything else was meh to disgusting. The service was ok. I will not return, there are too many great places to go in Portland!

HORROR Story

By cafeclash |

We ordered two appetizer. Took 45 minutes to cook and when it arrived. It was already cold. Cheese was hard. Sent it back to warm up...took another 20 minutes. Guy forgot to pick up again...What a nightmare! Stay away!.

Sunday Brunch

By Elizabeth |

The Sunday Jazz Brunch is really fun. The music is fabulous. I was told by my waiter that if I ordered a half dozen oyster during Sunday Brunch it would take 30-45 minutes to be served. I was a bit surprised since this place is actually an Oyster Bar and I was only ordering 6 oysters. I didn't order the oysters and guess what? It still took 45 minutes for my husband and I to get our food. We did enjoy our food.

Delicious Creamy Oysters

By Debbie E |

Loved the Chelseas, tasted almost like Penn Cove Mussels. Also had the seafood gumbo - it was a little too spicy and runny for me - asked for more rice. Dessert was heavenly and since it took some time to make, we were comped. All in all I will go again if only for the oysters!!

well, ok for so far from NOLA

By AZGrotta |

Went for lunch and had shrimp po'boy - my husband had an oyster po-boy. Pretty good EXCEPT for some strange sauce (billed as their special sauce) that overwhelmed the taste. My husband is a NOLA native and we've had more food there than we could tally -- and never had a sauce like this before. That said, will try again...asking them to hold the sauce. Will also try some other dishes,,,,albeit a bit reluctantly

Great food, great service and a great place

By brandon F |

We had some great food, great beer and great drinks. We had their house made pork rinds, a dozen very fresh oysters and very good jambalaya. Also their pork sausage which is amazing. It's a great little place with a fun atmosphere. We will be going back for sure.

Nice, big oysters!

By Skegger |

Happy Hour, several platters of oysters, and a few Millers. This is what the summer should be like every day! They chopped the horseradish up nicely, provided the red sauce and some lemon... that was a fantastic meal!

Date night for great oysters!

By Bethanie C |

Great food. Service was good but not great, a little impersonal. But over all we loved the time there. We had oyster shooters( el hombre) Raw oysters,(Tilamock which were very good) frog legs( also very good I liked the breading on it) and fried pickles(which we loved). Home made ranch is amazing!! (we're ranch people and we loved it and wanted to take some home but forgot to ask) All the food felt fresh, when you order it they make it up or shuck it right there

Impossibly slow service, disinterested staff

By Nick H |

Walked in, the place was less than a third full and were told to sit anywhere. We picked a table near the bar. The server brought waters, then the waiting began. Ten minutes to place an order, twenty minutes to get drinks. The server actively avoided eye contact with all of the patrons. Had to work with the bar to get our bill. The table next to us had the same problem. Couldn't understand the service delays with three people working behind the bar, at least two in the kitchen and a server. The dozen oysters ($29/dozen - not expensive, but above average) were pretty good. Ordered a dark and stormy to drink and it was neither dark or stormy. Overall, best avoided. There are numerous other spots nearby.

If you love oysters, if you dont mind a slow evening.

By sweetafton |

This is a neighbourhood eatery with a shack ambiance. It felt like we walked into a former workshop of some kind. The al-fresco area is like being on a five foot way outside somebody's shop house. The bar is located on a mezzanine floor. It was a Friday. We had no reservations but arrived slightly earlier than the Friday evening crowd. We took a table inside the restaurant but not on the bar floor. Service was a bit on the slow side and a bit haphazard. The place started filling up, and we gave our orders. We were served by 3 servers though on the check it was stated that Matthew was our server. If he was the one who served the oysters, he was a fun guy. One person served our order for 18 oysters (43.50); another (from the bar) served our order for 2 bottles of Cava (60.00) and beer (12.00), and a third our Green Salad (7.00) Gumbo (13.00) Jambalaya (11.00). Since we were there for a slow dinner, we did not mind the slow service. It was a tad difficult to get attention. However service was friendly. And the servers were very busy. The oysters were fabulous as were the rest of the Cajun-Creole meal. Prices were very reasonable if you discount the alcohol.

Small and tasty

By CLJ_5352 |

We went here on a recommendation and we were more than happy to find a great selection of oysters. They were fresh and tasty so we ordered more. I confess I was the only one in the group who had never had raw oysters. I loved them! We went in the afternoon and enjoyed "happy hour" prices. Not a fancy place, just good oysters so what more can you ask for.

Most excellent!

By Kurt B |

Great food, music and drinks. Very unique! And must do...

Doesn't get any fresher

By 2oldgeesers |

5 stars for the food and 5 stars for creativity in setting, but this ain't fancy. Old service station in a nice gentrified part of town I would not have dared visited when here as a college student. All the oyster farmers drive their trucks here to drop off their loads, then they are parcelled out to the fine restaurants all over town. They keep a few of the best oysters here and there are usually 5 varieties on the menu, but not the same each day. Go with friends and order raw first, then Rockefeller, then another style, each a different kind of oyster. Yes you can get a Poboy, but they do such a fantastic job of other styles, if you give them time. Sometimes there's music.

Can't Believe I can get Fried Dill Pickles in Portand, Oregon

By ForestGrove |

Best fried okra outside the South, and better than many of them. Ask to hold back the extra black pepper. Good choice of beers to go with good creole cooking. Fried dill pickles are a treat for me.

Maybe just close on Mondays?

By redheadedwoman |

We had a great AirBnB in the neighborhood and didn't want to drive for dinner. At 8pm on a Monday, EaT was pretty much the only option. We walked in, and got the "sit wherever you want", so we picked a table. Other than us, there was a woman at the bar and a two top that looked pretty much done with their meal. The bartender brought us water and menus. We decided on drinks and entrees, and waited. After about 10 minutes, we went up to the bar and waited to get the 'tender's attention. He took our order. Brought us drinks, then went out front of the restaurant for a quick smoke. Came back and dropped off food. Despite having no one else in the building and passing us twice more to go outside, he never checked back in. Which is good I guess, because the rice in my jambalay was undercooked and there was none of the promised sausage. My sister's Oysters Rockefeller were so infused with Pernod that she didn't finish them-and that girl loves her oysters. Niece declared her gumbo to be "ok". After we finished, we sat for a few minutes and actually giggled at how bad the service had been. I finally went to the bar to get our bill, and for the first time in a long time tipped less than 20%. The good news is, I didn't have to pay for the second round of drinks he could have sold us.

Just average

By rmaehl |

Too much salt in all the food. The oysters were good. Shrimp PO boy: bread burned, shrimp over fried, fries burned and really greasy, not enough slaw. Fried pickles were really greasy too and didnt come with any sauce. I wouldn't recommend or come back. Server was bored. atmosphere is kinda slummy trying to be urban and cool. My husband liked it though, go figure.

Fantastic service and delicious food

By Patricia D |

I recommend their fried okra, oyster po' boy and pecan pie though every dish I've tried has been amazing. The live music is another perk.

Sunday Jazz is where it's at!

By Patrick M |

I had Salty Dogs and watched the 2014 World Cup final listening in a fun atmosphere with a loveble jazz band. I'd come back any Sunday, sports or no sports, rain or shine. A great time.

Flat, blah food

By Mike K |

Another recent disappointment was this funky place located along N. Williams St. Went with friends for dinner. It is has a southern/Cajun influence. We all tried something different. Seafood gumbo was relatively good but more oysters in the stew than anything else. Red beans and rice was blah and needed to be spiced with our table sauces. The jambalaya was just okay being quite dry, with brittle sausage and chicken thighs atop the dish instead of chicken chunks mixed in. Not good! Guess this place is the bomb according to my friends but I didn't see that. Atmosphere is funky but nothing remotely interesting. Cocktails looked good, but we had none of them. Service was good. Prices were moderate but with so many other choices in the neighborhood, I would not choose this.

Tasty oysters

By IMGlasgow |

Good oyster selection and a lovely bottle of Argyle Brut fizz which was a modest 40 bucks a bottle. Nice vibe nice oysters.

Good southern cooking and very reasonable prices.

By Jasmine38Chichester UK |

We were attracted by the southern food menu rather than the oysters and the food was great. Its a pretty casual place but the service was good and prices very reasonable. We shared a small plate and then had two entrees and a bottle of wine and the bill totalled 70 USD. More than happy yo recommend this place.

Oyster bar with kids

By qtmt27 |

Oyster bar and toddlers don't always work out well, but this worked out surprisingly well for us. Food was solid, vibe was easygoing, they got swamped and service got slow, but our waitress was helpful and friendly.

it's ok

By jebsldn |

We wanted to try Gravy but they were closed. The person who recommended it forgot to tell us it's a breakfast/brunch spot! So, we went to Eat. We had the crawfish boil. It was ok - a little gritty. I'd never go back.

Great Brunch!

By solotraveler721 |

I recently went here with a group of six on a Sunday morning around 10:30am. We didn't have to wait for a table, but the garage doors were open, so it was a bit chilly. I assume if it was colder out they would have those shut and tables would be more crowded. There was live jazz that was great to listen to! We all had either the special which was crab cake benedicts or egg sardou which is on the menu. We agreed that while the crab cakes were delicious, the egg sardou stole the show. It was simply delicious! The service was a tad on the slow side, but they were very nice and we will definitely be back!! I've been craving that dish all week!

Bloody Mary Station. End of story.

By burgundy5 |

Great little spot with live music on Sundays. We came here for a drink whilst waiting for a table at Tasty & Sons, and had the most incredible hand-crafted bloody mary's where we could garnish and jazz up our drinks at the bloody mary station. Brilliant. They were fresh, unique and delicious, especially with a bit of local stout added to the mix. Highly recommended. We didn't eat here, but the menu looks amazing, laden with fresh seafood; oysters, po-boys, southern classics like shrimp and grits. A definite must-try for next time in Portland. Thanks for the great experience guys!

Great food slow service.

By JJ McKay |

I had been to Eat before on a Tuesday afternoon and took advantage of their excellent dollar oysters on the half shell. Came back for dinner and waited an hour for our food. Great food but not worth the wait.

Great oyster place

By Prissa |

Oyster fans will like this place....the oysters are fresh and their food is tasty. You can have your oysters baked, raw or fried. We always split a catfish po'boy and fried okra--crispy. Their breading includes cornmeal and they use a good oil for frying. We also like the collard greens and salads. The restaurant is laid back and comfortable. Oh yes, their oyster shooters are nice, tho they stopped making their champagne shooter which we liked. You might like to check on the spiciness in the food....we like a little, but lately restaurants in the states seem to pour on the spice.

I simply disappointed!

By julemegami |

I was in the area on business and looking for a place out of the middle of the city for some oysters...so I arrived at EaT. For a Friday evening, parking was not too bad and the location is pretty unique. The restaurants in the area seem to be in converted mechanic garages--with the nice temperatures, the garage parts are open creating open air seating. The place it's self had a bunch of mis-matched 60s and 70s tables and chairs. I walked in and awkwardly stood until I walked up towards the bar and was told to sit where ever I'd like. Menus are at the table and I was brought a carafe of room temperature water--no ice. That took me a bit off guard when I took my first sip. I decided to order some oysters, since that is why I came. I ordered a half dozen raw, a half dozen "Redneck Riviera," and a Po' Boy. Well my raw oysters never came. 30 minutes after placing my order, I was first served my redneck riviera oysters--which, from the actual Redneck Riviera were supposed to be akin to the chargrilled oysters we have. These were not--they were nasty! I don't know if it was the oyster or how they were cooked, but YUCK! By the time I tasted these, I decided not to remind the waiter that he forgot my raw oysters. My Po' Boy arrived and looked good. The fries were shoe string and golden--MUSH! I have no idea how you can make fries so golden and thin and not a single crunchy one in the bunch. The Po Boy was ok--a little too spicy for my liking, so I didn't each much of it. I wouldn't return with subpar food and long wait for food. Wouldn't have minded the wait if the food was actually edible.

Great Oysters & Apps

I went here for a mid afternoon snack. The oysters were great. Outdoor seating was nice. Service was quick. Prices were reasonable. Definitely will be back. Great date place for casual dining!

Good North Portland Neighborhood Bistro New Orleans Style

By Jim A |

In addition to oysters, they have good gumbo, etouffee, turtle soup, po-boys, bread pudding, and pecan pies. The drinks are quite tasty. No big bargains but nothing overpriced either.

Good ole' Louisiana Cooking in Oregon

By Trenda B |

Was looking for Kumamoto Oysters on the half shell. This place had them so off I went...OH MY!!!! Wonderful food, great bar, terrific area. I had my dozen oysters but then had the shrimp etoffee...Very spicy but oh so southern. And as an added bonus...real southern SWEET TEA!!! The staff was friendly, took time to talk (was an week day afternoon, so kind of slow) and truly wanted to know what this Louisiana girl thought. Was even given sharpies to write on the wall!!! Such a fun place....I can't wait until my next Oregon trip to go back...Love NW food but really wanted a taste of home and they nailed it!!!! A MUST STOP ON YOUR TRIP TO PORTLAND!

Sunday Jazz Brunch

By MacinMac |

The live jazz makes us want to go back again and again. Great oyster hash, great drinks, great people. And it's a fun neighborhood for out of towners like us to explore.

What a Bargain

By mstickler |

If you like a straight-ahead, down-to-earth, old-fashioned oyster bar with very good service and great prices, you will be a happy camper at EaT. They even have real Turtle Soup. The owner is from the Louisiana-side of Texas, and knows how to do this simple cuisine perfectly. We'll be back, many times.

Food Prep Cross-Contamination Problems

By Sweet G. |

Against my better judgement, I was talked into going to the Oyster Bar even though I have a shellfish allergy. Members of my party convinced me I could order food that did not contain seafood... big mistake. We talked to the waiter about the Jambalaya and he assured me it only contained chicken and sausage. Long story shortened, I was dealing with anaphylactic shock complications for the next 36 hours. If you have any kind of allergy problem, stay away! Obviously this restaurant does not take measures to avoid cross-contamination between dishes, which to me indicates an overall lack of care with food preparation. My partner enjoyed the tequila oyster shooters; I thought the Jambalaya was mediocre at best... nicely flavored but didn't contain many ingredients besides rice. Overall we thought it wasn't a very good value for the money.

Oysters at EaT

By kwtaper |

Grabbed a table by the window for people watching. EaT had 4 varieties of fresh oysters on the menu during our visit. Had 3 or each for a $28 dozen. All were fresh and clean. Served with lemon slices and there are hot sauces on the table if you should like to use. One more bottle of vinegar infused with Thai Chili pepper. Add a bottle of Argyle sparkling for $40. Next up we decided to try the baked oyster dishes - 2 each of the 3 preparations for $15. Enjoyed each so much we did it again, along with an order of onion rings $5. Had a nice lengthy lunch this way. Good New Orleans flavored music playing on the sound system. Felt a bit bad for the Some other dishes we saw looked like they had potential (greens, po-boys). Server/bartender as he was the only one out with us as EaT was filling up. He was great and we'll be looking to come in again on a future visit to town.

Hard to find, but worth it.

By Kevin McInroy-Edwards |

We stumbled upon this restaurant while our son was attending a swim meet nearby. The decor reminds me of a Louisiana bar, smack in the middle of gator country. But if you like oysters and good old Cajun cooking, this is the place for you. The staff is friendly, the food good, and the prices are very reasonable. Try the Oyster Po'Boy.

Just OK

By canmarto |

A fun New Orleans atmosphere. I ordered fried chicken and it was just OK, somewhat overcooked and tough. My wife's oysters were good. Looks like a great place to meet up with friends and have fun. The staff were friendly and helpful.
