Best mango lassi!

Good atmosphere and calming music. I got the Monday's special, biryani. Definitely will come again for some good Indian food!

Love Indian food but......

By Mark M |

Maybe having lived most of my life in England, where Indian food is the number one choice for many people, I am spoiled, but this was not a great experience. The main elements of the food were OK, possibly even good, but there was an element of disarray about the service that suggested this was opening night, which I am sure it was not, and the accompanying items, the rice and bombay potatoes were lukewarm at best.

Mediocre food at a high price

By hippoLA |

We were disappointed in the dinner we had. I had been here twice before but it had been a few years. The food was very bland and overpriced. The restaurant is nicely decorated and perhaps due to that and its location in downtown Portland they think that they can have high prices and poor food. I will not go there again. Also, it was quite loud, hard to have conversations and the service was slow.

Best Lambchops

By cbz48 |

This has been one of our favorite restaurants for many years. Some of the best food around coming out of the kitchen. Our last visit was very disappointing as we had terrible service. The seats have huge rips in them which caused a snag on my dress. Hoping they can get their act together in the front of the house!

Horrible Customer Service and Follow Through

By rwiller |

I tried and tried to communicate with Deven at EIC who is supposedly in charge of catering and events. I was trying to schedule a rehersal dinner for 16 people in Sepember. Despite several emails and phone calls, I received no response. Finally, in desparation I called their irritating phone tree and pushed 1 to order to go. A woman answered and I asked to speak to Deven. The person asked me why I wanted to speak to Deven (really?) so I explained and after a long pause she said this is Deven! After every excuse (bad email system, didn't get messages, etc.) we agreed on a reservation for 16 on the date. I then received an email reservation for 12!!! I once again emailed back to say that this was not what we agreed to on the phone. No response after two additional emails. I finally just cancelled the reservation and went to another Indian restaurant. Sadly I'm writing this review without ever tasting the food. The phone tree is bad, employees with responsibility do not return phone calls. I'm hoping the owner reads this review and takes it under consideration because this particular employee is not helping their business. Thank you.

Amazing Indian Food

By Dave K |

This was our second visit to the East India Co - this time for lunch on a Friday. Indian food is my favorite cuisine by far, but I tire of mediocre lunchtime Indian buffets that even good Indian restaurants produce. Thank you East India Co. for providing a reduced priced, a la carte lunch-time menu. As before, the service is impeccable - kind, informative and friendly. The atmosphere is classy; the food mouthwatering, tasty and perfectly prepared. Since leaving England 18 years ago, I have never found an India restaurant this side of the Atlantic that serves Sheesh-Kebabs - they do here and they are amazing! All lunch entrees come with an India-style soup - incredibly tasty. My wife had veggie somas for appetizer, I had Sheeh-Kebabs; for entrée my wife had the Goa Fish Curry, I had the Chicken Tikka Massalla, plenty of naan bread and food left over to take home. This is, hands-down, the best Indian Restaurant in the Portland area.

Portland's best restaurant for Indian cuisine

By JonN |

Looking for a fantastic dining experience? Then look no further. The East India Company is simply one of the best Indian restaurants in the Portland area in my opinion. The atmosphere is a essential hallmark to enjoying a unique dining experience as well as receiving good service and quality foods that are freshly prepared for each guest. This is what you can expect at East India Company. As for the abundance of delicious and delectable menu options, some of the highlights of my experience that I would strongly recommend trying: Tandoori Khumbi, grilled mushrooms marinated with herbs, fresh ginger and Tamarind chutney. These are great. Laziz Paslian, grilled lamb chops is a must as well as the Paneer Tikka, a grilled homemade cheese skewed with onions peppers then grilled in the Tandoor oven. If you enjoy seafood then I strongly recommend their tandoori salmon as well as tandoori shrimp. The flavors from the tandoor oven truly make it. I mean, it's that good! Saag Paneer is also one of my favorite vegetarian dishes and East India Company knows how to make it just right. Whether you choose the homemade cheese or chickpea with the saag both are fantastic. This restaurant has so many delicious choices on their selective menu and I don't think you can go wrong with trying any of them. I hope that you will enjoy this restaurant as much as I have.

We'd given up on the Indian restaurants in the area...SO glad we found East India Co!

By Mary B |

I'm super picky about my meat. It's just something that I can't control, and it had stopped me from enjoying any Indian food in the area. Several restaurants that I had loved started cutting costs and it showed. I thought I'd given up. East India proved me wrong. What a great place. Nice ambiance, great cocktails, incredibly attentive wait staff ... but the food was just delicious!! We got quite a variety as it was our first time. Everything was amazing. Rich flavors, high quality meats, and two super happy diners. (note: the salmon tandoori is not to be missed.)

Delicious Indian Food

By Michael S |

I enjoyed a business lunch with a colleague who enjoys spicy Indian cuisine. I was able to order a mild dish. We both enjoyed the food and excellent service.

How not to get customers

By Don |

Went it and experienced the worst ever experience of food service this year. Oh God, the lady (think she is the owner) is so rude and knows nothing about serving. She just stand in one corner and asked for drink like she is upset with the customers. One of us decided to change the order right after we order (less than a minute delay while she was still there), she gave a horrible look. She is a curse to restaurant and must be specialized in "how to avoid customers" to be very frank, writing anymore to this lady and about this restaurant is waste of time. Owner, If you are reading this :- Get rid of this Indian lady ASAP. She is the main reason you not having repeating customers. She is a disgrace and a shame to this restaurant. And to the lady: if you are the owner, get out of serving business, you are the sole reason for all negative reviews about this restaurant.

Unfriendly Service

By Sarah M |

Waited for ten minutes at an almost empty bar while waitresses dodged me. Food was very spicy but not flavorful. Waited half an hour at the bar (again almost empty) for a second beer. Don't think I'll be coming back.

East India Co. Just Gets Better!

By Dave K |

I have been visiting this restaurant for several years, and have written a couple of reviews, but tonight's experience was just so off-the-charts incredible I had to write another review. First off, no other Indian restaurant in Portland comes even close in terms of atmosphere and style of decor. East India is modern, comfortable, warm and inviting. The service is impeccable - our waitress was extremely polite, knowledgeable and brought that perfect balance, which is so hard to find in a waitress/waiter, of personable yet not overly, Then the food. We started with Popadoms and chutneys - great variety with a mixture of sweet, spicy and tangy chutneys. Then our appetizer, which we ordered from the tandoori section of the menu - Sheek Kebabs. They burst with flavor and were perfectly spiced. Then for our main course we ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, which is a lamb shank in a spiced brown sauce, and Chicken Vindaloo. Both dishes were just incredible, bursting with flavor and perfectly spiced. We accompanied the main courses with rice, perfectly cooked, and plain naan, which was also perfectly cooked, slightly crispy, and buttered appropriately. I've been eating Indian food around the world for 40 years and this is, hands down, the best Indian restaurant in Portland, and one of the best I have ever eaten at. So, so good.

Great food

By Tom B |

Food was perfection. We had lunch menu. Soup was flavorful. Curry chicken so tender. Salmon was too die for. Ambience very nice. Took home left overs. Naan was hot flaky. Check it out.

Lamb Chops

By cbz48 |

The flavors coming out of the restaurant are some of the best in the city. Starting frrom the Mango cilantro Margaritia to my favorite lamb chops and garlic Naan. The staff is so friendly and attentive. One of my favorite places to dine!!

Fabulous

By Portlandia |

Everything was superb here, from the service to the atmosphere to the food itself. I was tempted to go back the next day. One of the friends who was with us that night went back for lunch two days later and loved it. Although I am not gluten or dairy intolerant, this is a place where you can find lots to order if you are. They also have vegan dishes. I ordered the Saag with Lamb and my spouse ordered the Kerala Masala with chicken. We also ordered the Naan. I think it contained rosemary. in any case, it was delicious. The next time I go I would like to order extra dishes so we have lots of leftovers the next day.

best food I have had in a LONG time

By calirosecunningham |

The atmosphere was so zen and calm. I felt like I was in an exotic restaurant in India! Our appetizer was so delicious and the dipping sauces were very sassy! Then our dinner came (served by the sweetest people and funny too!) and we were in heaven! All the food was perfectly cooked and so flavorful! I was so full but I did want to stop eating!! The manager came by and was so gracious and thanked us for dining at their restaurant. It is a must try and definitely the top of my list in favorite portland restaurants.

Great lunch spot

By irvingtonevk |

This is a wonderful lunch spot in downtown Portland. The chicken tikka masala is excellent. You don't need a reservation. There are very few people there.

Good lunch but scattered service

By mattruane |

I went here for lunch with three colleagues after reading reviews here and on YELP. I also read a local review that said it was one of the best India restaurants in downtown. The food was really good (and we tried different things from the concise lunch menu options) and I have to say the food was good and tasty. Spice levels were appropriate to the descriptions. My only complaint despite a semi-full restaurant and a number of servers present, that the service was a bit scattered. It took a bit to get drinks refilled (and had to speak to a different couple of people) and I don't think anyone came back to check in on us more than once after the food arrived. Honestly though, the food was good and well worth the minor service hiccups.

Impressive Indian Fare - Downtown

By Mike T |

I visited the East India Co. for both lunch and dinner during my 3-4 day visit. I enjoyed both meals - the Hyderabadi vegetable biryani for lunch and a veggie curry (paneer balls) for dinner. The rice was very tasty, not dry at all, and a heaping portion - almost too much for lunch; but I ate it all. The veggie curry was also excellent for dinner - my only complaint being that the rice that came with the dish was a small portion. I ordered a naan bread which I normally wouldn't have done if there was a good portion of rice. Should have just ordered more rice as I ended up taking most of the naan back to my hotel for a late nite snack. I was totally impressed with the vegetable pakoras I ordered at dinner. It was whole pieces of veggies that were battered. The pakoras I have eaten before were small pieces of deep fried vegetables mixed together. These pakoras were like the Indian version of tempura; but of course with the spice. The dish the way it was presented was a work of art. Excellent value, excellent food, nice atmosphere, gracious service, and conveniently downtown. What more could you want? On my to do list for my next visit to Portland.

First visit was outstanding!

By traveltounravel |

This was our first visit to this restaurant and our child's first experience with true Indian food, and she is very picky. Wow! She had the chicken murg, rice, garlic naan and a salad. She left giving compliments to everyone & said she "loved it" so much that is was in her top 2 favorite foods... In the world! I LOVED the tikka masala & the naan. The portion was ample and the sauce will keep me craving this spectacular dish! My husband had a chick pea dish that was flavorful, with the right amount of spice. Our friend had the salmon & enjoy the simplicity and subtle garlic flavor. We also had the chicken wings which were spicy, flavorful and a great signal to what we could expect once our entrees arrived. The staff was beyond kind- explaining everything in detail to my daughter, who is not adventurous. We left completely thrilled that we had found a fantastic restaurant that is deeply satisfying for our entire family.

Nice ambience, average taste, ask for medium+

By tbandopadhyay |

Well, I think we were a little bamboozled by "medium" spicy here, especially (1) being from India (2) living in bay area. This landed us with a taste which I want to say - a little on the sweeter side. Otherwise, the atmosphere was good, the place was full - which in itself is a very good sign on a weekday. The quality of food and presentation gets a thumbs up. If you want authentic taste, I guess asking for medium+ would be ideal.

This is a FIND!

By Al_Doyle_Seattle |

We ducked in about 45 minutes before closing on a Spring Friday evening and were lucky enough to to be seated. We were so glad. We'd have great Indian food in Seattle and San Francisco, but had not yet found a winner— until now! We loved every bit of this experience. We had a warm welcome. The place was buzzing with a mixed age up-scale Portland crowd. We took the fact that a number of East Indian families were dining there as a very encouraging sign. We were not disappointed. The menu had the expected Indian favorites, but with a much more subtle and delightfully complex spicing and preparation. We had Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosas, and Garlic Naan. All three the best we have had anywhere. To keep out visit truly scientific, a had to order Gin and Tonics. Wow! The drinks were perfect and quite generous. We recommend East India with unbridled enthusiasm.

Perfect with their own creativity coming through.

By johnofark |

This place had amazing Indian food. For me the seasoning was not quite the typical you would expect, but in a wonderful way. The food had all of the traditional flavors that were appropriate for the individual dishes, but added flavor - not sure what herbs or spices they used to do this, without detracting from the base flavors.

Let down by poor service

By blindlemonpie |

I ate here in June 2011 and rated this 5 star. This was my second visit to Portland and I couldn't wait to return. Once again the food was superb, no complaints on that front whatsoever. This time though our enjoyment was almost ruined by the terrible service. From the unfriendly greeting, to food not turning up, to the sullen attitude of many staff. The service was utterly confused. We had six!! different servers, one guy poured water, one guy brought drinks, one lady slapped down food in front of us, one lady asked how our food was, one guy looked absolutely clueless and one lady had to apologize or all the mistakes. What a shame.

EXCELLENT date night!

By 503Jetsetter |

I was hesitant to write this review, because I feel that even after years in downtown Portland, this is a total secret little gem. The food is absolutely outstanding, as is the service. The prices are competitive for downtown, as well. I went here for dinner on Christmas eve and loved it! The ambiance reminds me of a trendy Vegas or NYC restaurant without being pretentious. The private booths are a nice touch. It's also directly off the streetcar line, which makes getting to this restaurant a breeze. Put this on your list while in PDX!

Disappointed!!

By bhatgi |

Went there with high expectations for lunch. On Saturday there was no lunch menu and had to pay dinner prices for entrees. With the meat dish we requested lemon slices and onion; also asked for hot vindaloo sauce in the side to spice up the dishes. When the bill came, we were charged $5 for the hot sauce and $2 for the lemon slices and onion under the pretext of “salad”. When questioned the server said “they will not allow me to give anything without charging”. We have been to countless Indian restaurants where onion and lemon slices are complimentary (paid dinner entree prices for the lunch) and we can understand an up charge of $1-2 for the sauce but $5? That is greedy! We were not informed about these high charges upfront!

Best Food

By MattDFW123 |

I've had Indian food all over the US. This is the best food ever!!! If you visit Portland, you need to eat here!!!

Service + food were above and beyond!

By Leighanne H |

We had a dinner for 20 people on a Saturday, and I ended the night both satisfied and happy! What more can one ask? The food was on-point (we are from NYC btw, very discerning with our food) --- the service was stellar (thanks Madison!!!!) and everyone in the place was very accommodating. Highly recommended for large parties. Just make your reservation ahead of time and don't be afraid to ask for what you want. Yay East India!

Best Indian food in downtown Portland

By Shamir K |

The entrance is small and unassuming, so for 2 years in Portland I walked past it every weekend without going in. 2 wasted years of my life that I could have eaten there every weekend. I now eat here frequently with my family, and we love the food. The Fish/Shrimp Kerala is the go to choice for my wife and kids, but the Naan, the Biriyani, and the Shrimp Goan curry are excellent as well. The last is very spicy, as it should be. I've eaten at most Indian restaurants in Portland, but this is easily my favorite downtown.

Lovely restaurant with really good Indian food.

By Tara D |

We visited for dinner and to start had the Samosa Chaat which was very good, we shared 2 orders between 3 of us. For dinner I decided to try a dish I have never had before called Lamb Makhani. It was really nice and I also tried a bit of my friends Tikka Masala as that is what I often order, and that was very nice too. Service was very good and I liked the ambience of the restaurant a lot.

Could be better

By Sdewani |

We had visited East India Co in 2011 and had a pleasant experience (that was a weekday afternoon) This time we went back on a weekend night with friends and the experience was the opposite. Staff was not prompt and at times seemed disinterested almost bothered by people being there. Food was strictly ok for the price. Ambience is still probably the best for Inidan places in pdx area.

Superb

By SW19-g |

Visited with my wife and our young children (3 and 6) during our summer holidays. We came having seen the Tripadvisor recommendations and weren’t disappointed. Absolutely amazing food. Bhajis to start were outstanding. My wife and I had two great curries and they did a very mild one for or two children which they devoured. Great wine list reasonably priced. We had one of the friendliest waiters you could ever meet to complete the experience. We live in London so are fortunate enough to have a superb selection of Indian restaurants available to us but this was right up there with the best!!!

It's worth checking out

By lindsaylittlejohn |

The restaurant has a lot more ambiance then you can imagine from the street. The bar is rather long and slender but the back dining room is intimate and well decorated. The food was well prepared and the servers were energetic and very efficient!

Lunch menu is simpler than it used to be, but with a range of good choices.

By Margaret F |

I eat lunch here almost every time I visit Portland. The dining room is an interesting shape and the canopied booths at the back give it a certain character. Last time I visited (late last year) I was disappointed both by the quality of the food and the somewhat untrained waitstaff. I nearly didn't go back, but am so glad that I did. The service today was back to its previous high standard and the food was great. The lunch menu is simpler than it used to be, but with a range of good choices. Whether you are going out with a group, or dining alone, it's a good place, in a convenient location.

Ok

By Gary J |

We ate here on our first night in Portland and were a little disappointed. The restaurant is nice enough and staff pleasant enough. The menu is quite compact but there's enough choice and variety. My wife ordered the tandoori chicken and I had the chicken vindaloo with the waitress warning me about how hot it would be. I've been eating hot curries for around 45 years and truly have never tasted such an insipid vindaloo. If you like your curries full of tomatoes and a little spice then the vindaloo's for you. On the plus side the tandoori chicken was good. We also didn't like that the waitress on clearing our plates said she'd bring the check when we still had drinks in front of us. Her colleague duly arrived with the said check a minute later. Do they not trust their customers?

It is amazing!!

By Abdullah A |

we tried samosa in appetizer. lamb biryani and masala in main corus, all of them were fantastic and delicious

Lovely place!

By Lilmishabear |

Really classy feel and look. Food is excellent and the service is fantastic. Not a typical Indian restaurant but more of an upscale establishment. Menu had most of the things found on a typical Indian food menu but the presentation on the plates seemed more like a fine dining experience. Would definitely go back.

Superb

By blindlemonpie |

After several days travelling up the coast and eating seafood I needed something different. Being a ex-pat brit I needed something spicey. They food here was top notch, tandoori mushrooms followed by shrimp vindaloo (amazing taste) and two house cocktails.....the masala magarita and masala mojito (two indians spins on the classics). Brilliant. Cannot believe there aren't more reviews of this restaurant here!

Delicious Lunch -

By PDXPortland |

My wife had been here for lunch the previous week and raved about the restaurant - fast forward a week to a gray, rainy Saturday in Portland, and the idea of having an Indian Curry for lunch seemed very appealing! We were welcomed into the restaurant and offered a booth, but decided on table - the restaurant appears quite small as you enter, but pleasantly opens up to a large open restaurant well appointed and with a nice décor. Menus were presented and we chose the Nan, samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Fish Kerala and Lamb Biryani - a nice touch is the delicious pepper lentil soup which warmed us up. The food came quite quickly, but we didn't feel rushed at all. The chicken was well cooked and the I loved the tandoori oven flavor - quite unique and authentic compared to other restaurants. The Kerala was also very good with a pleasant coconut sauce. The Biryani was seasoned well and the lamb was not tough, but quite flavorful. The nan was probably the best I have had in a long time - piping hot and not at all heavy - suspect it was also cooked in a tandoori oven? Overall top marks for service, food and ambiance. The owner also dropped by our table which as a nice touch and made us feel more welcome. He and all the staff were truly genuine! We will be back and I would certainly recommend the East India Co.

Exceptional service, setting, and food!

By NW_traveler51 |

For a first-timer wanting to try traditional or more exotic Indian food, this is the downtown place to head. Two or three dishes shared by two people is a nice sized meal. Plenty of interesting side dishes to add if you have a bigger appetite. I've had good Indian food all over the world and would take guests here anytime.

Great Indian food

By Gary S |

We started with some hot garlic naan bread. Followed by our main dishes; Korma chicken (green chili, cashew and ginger) and Kerala fish (red curry and coconut milk). Both had great flavor and the right spiciness. The service was attentive and fast.

Delish!!!

By Dharu |

We stumbled on this restaurant while walking around just looking for a place to let our son settle down . Entered this place and were greeted by the friendly hostess. We found a seating area right at the entrance which was very convenient for us since we had a noisy infant. Had the malai kofta , naan, raita and fried rice. I must admit that this was one of the most well flavored lunches we had had in a while. Our waitress also did her best to make us feel comfortable . Would love to go here again!

Wonderful Indian in central location

By rosielopez |

Selected this restaurant because it was close to the hotel. What a find! Food was was good, service was friendly and prompt. Three of us shared Pakore (simply wonderful!), Vindaloo (very spicy, but warned by both menu and server), Gobi Aloo and Naan. The flavors were good as were the accompanying sauces. The ambience is very nice as well. Will definitely come to this restaurant again.

Going going gone (downhill that is)!

By BarefootBuddies |

We have been regulars for many years. However, we may NOT be anymore. The last 3 visits we've been very disappointed. The new staff are NOT friendly or quick to seat you. We stood and waited while FIVE staff members stood around and discussed where to seat us - and the place was half empty. Ended up at a table for two when there were 4 booths open. This really ticked us off!!! The veg korma came congealed. In other words, it had clearly sat on the cook counter for some time before served to us. Lastly, the lamb biriyani was missing most of the lamb! When we order lamb biriyani at Chennai Masala in Beaverton, it's LOADED with lamb! An expensive dish. A rip off here. Doubtful if we will go back now.

More than meets the eye

By Cdn_traveller59 |

Starving and wandering around Portland, we saw what looked like a bar. Make sure you walk past the bar area located in the front so you can see the well-appointed restaurant space beyond. Great service, delicious food. When we mentioned we wanted to share, our two meals were brought out in communal dishes so we could sample. Reasonably priced - dinner for two including drinks was just over $40.

Formal Indian food

By lancashireexile |

Two of us ate hear in an almost deserted restaurant before going to Providence Park for a Timber's match. I'm used to eating Indian food in the UK and this was not unlike higher end Indian [as opposed to Bangladeshi] restaurants in UK cities. The menu is short with largely familiar dishes in [I think] North Indian style but with a nod in the direction of local sensibilities. The quality of the food was good with a saag chicken dish of a particularly high standard. I started with a bel-puri which was fine but perhaps not quite so good as I've eaten in the UK. Overall though I liked the restaurant and would certainly go back. Service was slick, the ambience is formal as befits a city centre establishment, we drank beer which kept the bill down and left feeling full and satisfied.

Excellent Indian cuisine, great service

By Dicka |

Yummy. We are Indian food lovers, a taste we acquired when we lived in London, England, years ago. East India does not disappoint and, as frequently the case these days, offer mild, medium and spicy versions of their dishes. We shared the Chicken Korma and the vegetarian Karala Masala. Yummy.

Elegance combined with Heavenly flavors

By Anupam N |

Being new in town, my wife and I decided to try out an Indian Restaurant and chose the East India Co. The street presence is minimal but once you step in and go past the bar, you enter an elegant dining area. The center area of the dining area is raised a bit and we would suggest you ask to be seated in that area. Great lighting and atmosphere. Apart from a full wine and liquor menu, they have some very interesting cocktails that I would strongly suggest you try. The food we ordered was presented very nicely abd was the most authentic tasting food we have had outside India. The bread was especially good. The Manager was walking the restaurant and talking to the customers which is always a sign of a well run restaurant. Being vegetarian we appreciated the variety of vegetarian choices and the restaurant did not smell of meat cooking. The service was attentive and the wait quickly took care of replacing a dish that we had mistakenly ordered. The menu has some of the traditional basics but it also has some items from the western part of india that you do not find in the typical indian restaurant. All in all, this will be our restaurant to go to when we want a indian food fix and to take out of town visitors. This was not the cheapest indian restaurant but the best.

Great experience

By justhavnfun |

We decided to out for dinner at the last minute last night - a Friday. Called the East India Co and we're able to get a table for 3 at 7:15pm. Perfect. We arrived on time, were seated immediately and enjoyed a very delicious meal. Marsala, Tandori, mushroom appetizer, Spinach/Corn Saag were all great. Service was helpful and attentive. Highly recommended.

Good traditional Indian place

By Christophe_JSB |

The place itself is nothing special though clean and cosy. The food though is excellent with generous portions.

Started off great, but quickly went downhill

By debkits |

We were in Portland for a few days and one of the great joys of Portland is its wide variety of restaurants. Having a hankering for Indian, we decided to try a place not too far from the hotel for lunch. First of all I should preface this by saying that we have spent time in London where Indian restaurants are everywhere and competition is stiff so my expectation of Indian food may be a bit higher than many others. The menu had three prixe-fix options and we chose the middle option which gave us soup, samosas a tandoori option and a curry with rice. The soup came out first and, while it was a bit thin, it was tasty and the flavors well-balanced. The samosa came out next and were incredible - some of the best I have ever tasted. They were presented cut in half with chutney on top. Then came out our seekh kabobs. Yumm. By this time we were getting very excited about our upcoming curries. What a disappointment! My husband had the fish curry and it was nothing to write home about, and my chicken Korma was not at all as good as this dish can be or even reasonably close. The chicken was dry and tasted like it had been cooked separately, left on a warming dish to dry out and tossed in the curry sauce at the last minute, not cooked in it. The first three dishes held such promise and both curries were major let-downs. Would I eat here again? Doubtful unless I was convinced that the chef who ruined what could have been marvelous curries was demoted to dishwasher.

Gotten Worse

By GuestfromMichigan |

I had the take out and the food is not as good as a year ago. What happened? Try the deserts - mango cheesecake is the best in Portland.

very good culinary experience[INDIAN]

By Nagesh R V |

Had 2 dinners there.Great food well cooked being East Indian was happy that quality was excellent. Very good ambience and service. compared to the the OTHER Indian resturant close by ,this is WAY better.

Superb Indian cuisine

By DoctorZippy |

As a Brit who lives in an area full of really good authentic Indian restaurants, I didn't have high hopes for finding good Indian food in Portland... How wrong I was! This place served me easily one of the top 5 curries I have ever had. Perfect balance of spices and heat, not too much gee and all served with style and passion. Highly recommended.

The Best Indian Food I've Ever Had!!!!

By AliBug |

My husband and I love Indian food and we're thrilled that we found this place! It was the best I've ever had! I ate the Chicken Marsala and it had the perfect spicy kick. Delish! My husband had the Chicken Tandoori and loved it! The service was incredible also. If you ever get a chance to eat here, do so. One more thing, if you have't eaten all of your meal, box it up and take it with you. You may come across someone who is more unfortunate than you who would love to finish it. Be kind.

Excellent flavors

By Rob H |

Walked into a dimly lit romantic atmosphere. Service was slow in greeting our table but from then on it was satisfactory. The food was priced fair and incredibly tasty! I'd recommend the scallop coconut curry. However the portions of food are smaller than most Indian reataurants I've been to, so order a little more. :)

Great food

By fabdog |

Ate here with friends while visiting the Portland area, they had said it was the best Indian food in the area. I'll take them at their word having not tried other locations in Portland, the food was excellent. Wide ranging menu we had a variety of items (vindallo, butter chicken, vegetable dishes) and they were all excellent. Service was very good. Will be back again

One of the yummiest Indian eateries in Portland

By Poushy |

The food and ambience are both great. Located a bit away from the bustle of Downtown portland, but only a little distance away. Lovely Indian food. Especially the Naan, Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer and the Tandoori Chicken. The servers are really friendly too. It's a must try for Indian cuisine. You ask them to reduce or increase the spice/chilli content to match your taste buds.

Nice Indian Downtown

By Ajay KMehta |

Nice restaurant well appointed with nice food.Could be a little less greasy but was nice.We had Vegetarian choices and ate twice.both times food was good.Service was nice but can be improved.

There are better restaurants in Puddletown...

I had never tried East India, so when friends said it was one of their favorites, I was happy to go along. The ambiance is terrific - a nice small bar space opening into an elegant and comfortable dining area (although a little loud on a Saturday night). The menu is a bit puzzling - it appears they are trying to be "all things to all people," in other words, food from all over the subcontinent, but most of which appearing the same on everyone's plate. All three of us received a pyramid of rice, a puzzling side dish of tarted-up cubed peas and carrots, and a highly-spiced main dish (different ones) swimming in a creamy sauce. The papadan was odd to my taste and I didn't even try the nan. There were no condiments. I enjoyed my evening because I love my friends and I relish the chance to spend time with time, But in terms of relishing the cuisine, Portland has many better options. For good Indian food, go to Beaverton.

Best Indian Food in Portland

Great food and service with a good variety of Indian cusine.

Great Indian Food

By Andrew |

Stumbled upon this place by accident. High quality food in an upscale setting with some great vegetarian options. Friendly, attentive service. My new favorite Indian restaurant in PDX.

Wonderful food; highly recommend stopping in!

By Kathy W |

A local resident we met on a recent trip to Portland highly recommended this restaurant to us. We stopped in for lunch and were enchanted. The food was wonderful, as was the service, ambiance and price. We shared the food we ordered, and started off with a fantastic lentil soup that was light and tangy and perfectly spiced. We then had small plates of the tandoori mushroom and the salmon kebab. The mushrooms were also perfectly spiced and absolutely delicious; we haven't had mushrooms prepared this way before and are big fans now. The salmon was delicate and just melted in our mouths when eaten. Our final dish was the chicken vindaloo, which lived up to its reputation as spicy (we were warned). This was also wonderful: the chicken was perfectly cooked, the spice palate was fabulous, and the spice was tamed by the raita, which had it's own special kick. Overall, a great unanticipated experience. We're going back before we leave!

Excellent spot for good quality Indian food.

By DawnLez |

Coming from the UK, we have eaten in numerous good and not so good Indian restaurants and this was one of the very good ones. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and the staff were all friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding - perfectly spiced and flavoured and although the portions were large, we did manage to eat most of it, something we don't often manage to achieve in the US. Well worth a visit.

Good vegetarian food

Great Vegetarian food. The Biryani could be better. Lovely interiors and ambience. Lovely crockery and table setting. :)

Maintaining standard

By EVR Sastry |

We visited this restaurant on a Saturday for lunch. We got seats easily and made a selection from what appeared to be a simple menu (at least for vegetarians). This was my second visit to this place after 2012. The food was good and so was the service. I felt the ambiance could be improved a bit. The lighting was acceptable in the main restaurant, but the two rest rooms are rather dimly lit.

Great authentic Indian!

By Kate M |

I appreciate a good Indian restaurant and this is one of them! Service was good, the food was great, although the portions were smaller than I was used to at other Indian restaurants but that was ok because I still left overly full and all for a reasonable price.

A lovely spot.

By Michelle M |

I've lived in this city for many, many years and had never been out to a nice Indian meal. Some friends were visiting that also love Indian food so I checked tripadvisor for a well reviewed spot. We were not disappointed. The food was very tasty and the atmosphere was very nice. The chicken tikka masala was by far my favorite dish. I would absolutely recommend this place to others.

Once a gem, now not worth going to

By seirrac |

Since this restaurant opened years ago, I have eaten there many times. As time has gone on it's all gone downhill. Tonight was the last time I will eat there. When you arrive at East India Co. you are often greeted by the bartender who says "we'll be right with you" and is attentive. Then you stand around and wait. Eventually a wait staff member will greet you and they always ask the same thing "Do you have a reservation?" Unfortunately the delivery always comes across like you should have made a reservation, so it feels like you're in trouble for not having one. In all the times I've eaten there the restaurant has never been more than half full. The decorations are above average and the place settings are clean and attractive. The bathrooms are always clean. Water is always served without ice at room temperature. I prefer it cold and with ice. The level of service tonight was the worst I've ever had and also the only time I've talked with the female manager of the restaurant. We had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Before we could even look at any menus our waitress (who seemed new and inexperienced) asked us if we knew what we wanted to drink. I had only just sat down and hadn't had a chance to review the wines. She said she'd give us a minute. About 10 minutes passed when she finally returned. I asked what the "house white wine" was, and she didn't know and had to go to the bar to ask. She should know this, she works there. We went ahead and ordered our drinks, appetizer and our entrees. She said she'd get the drinks and some papadams and chutneys for us. After a while she came back with drinks, then a guy brought us the papadams and chutneys and immediately after that she brought out the samosas. The delivery was all so fast we could barely make room on the table in time. I was surprised with how quickly it came out. Normally they are slow. Then they cleared all the plates from the table for our entree course but wanted us to keep our dirty cutlery. I found it odd they want to take all the plates and leave you with only the table to put your dirty fork/knife on. Finally the entrees arrived. I don't know how long it took, but I'll say it was probably faster than other times when I've had to wait 45 minutes or more. The first thing I noticed was that the Paneer Tikka was a smaller portion on a smaller plate, did not include onion as was listed on the menu, and had a random cup of salad added to it. In the past you'd get 8-10 cubes of paneer with pieces of onions, tomatoes and bell peppers. This was 6 pieces of paneer with only 2 pieces of green pepper. No onions to be seen which is odd since they're cheap and it is listed on the menu. Then the portion of bombay potatoes was probably 1/3 of what you used to get. Finally the paneer was barely warm, like it hadnt been cooked fully or was poorly reheated. The Chicken Makhani was another story altogether. WOW! The dish tasted so smoky I thought it was old or rotten. I've eaten the same thing there previously and never thought it was smoky or bad. I was only able to eat 2 bites and had to stop. While we ate our empty water glasses weren't refilled and our server never came by to check on us. My husband likes smoky food and let me eat the paneer and he ate the funky chicken. When the waitress finally came back she offered a box for the leftover chicken. I told her "it's not worth saving." I told her it was so smoky I couldn't eat it and I'd had the dish there before and it wasn't smoky in the past. She said she'd get her manager. The manager comes over and says she would have liked to have 'fixed it' for us but we waited too long to say something so now there wasn't anything she could do. I told her our waitress never checked on us and I didn't think I should yell I didn't like the food across the restaurant. I explained I'd eaten the same dish there before and enjoyed it and it never tasted smoky. She explained to me that the chicken for all the dishes is cooked in the clay tandoori oven and is smoky. She said they put the dark meat in the chicken makhani and the breast meat is in the chicken tikka masala. I again said, I'd had the dish before and it wasn't ever that smoky. She again explained how it was cooked, and I have to say, this felt like an argument. She didn't offer us any solution and lost two loyal customers. The bill was $57 for one beer, one house wine, samosas and two entrees. It wasn't worth $30 in my opinion. You're better off going to Swagat and getting a dinner meal. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone ever again. Too expensive, terrible service and mediocre food at best.

Excellent Catering, Food & Service

By sanjaypdx |

We were looking for a place to celebrate our parents 50th Anniversary. Pradeep at East India Company worked with us to make this an unforgettable event. They are usually closed on Sundays but he opened the restaurant up for us to have a private party. We had quite a few food restrictions and special needs and he worked with us to ensure that each guest could be accommodated. We also wanted a band and he opened up the place a few hours early so the band could set up. Overall, the food and service was excellent and everyone had an incredible evening. Thanks so much to Pradeep and his team for making it an amazing event for our parents.

Authentic Indian cuisine

With a good ambience at a good location in downtown, the restaurant provided a lovely authentic Indian food.

Good food and plenty of it

By gefilte63 |

My wife and I came here for lunch after hiking Multnomah Falls and we brought an appetite--East India Co. did not disappoint. This place looked to be popular with locals and less touristy. The vibe is calming and quiet. Food was delicious and prepared exactly to our level of spiciness. There portions at lunchtime were big; we would have taken the leftovers home but had to catch a train right after that. A great choice for Indian Cuisine in Portland.

Downtown Indian

By golfalex |

Looking for a good Indian restaurant downtown, need to try this place. Have not been disappointed with lunch and been here twice. The naan is good and I have had the chicken vindaloo in which I loved, great flavor and the right amount of heat. The spicier the better for me. Will go back here more

Incredible!

By David S |

I travel frequently the world over and I am always in search of a good meal where ever I go. This place has everything a weary traveler needs in spades and then some. I wish I had more time here in Portland just so I can come back again and again. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala off the lunch menu and can't rave enough how much I enjoyed it.

Good for Vegans

By JasperMarks |

We always enjoy meeting friends here because my wife and I can eat vegan and our friends can have meat. Also like for vegans because they serve vegan roti; which is essentially nan for vegans. Good atmosphere.

Very good Indian food

By Barbara L |

I ate here twice on a recent visit to Portland - once for lunch with three other people and once for dinner with seven other people. We were all very pleased with the food and the service. Often I don't like Indian food because it can be sort of "gloppy" with everything mushed together somehow, but this was very good with the ingredients having distinct flavors. The food is quite spicy (at least by my standards) so on the dishes where you have a choice I would recommend choosing "mild". The seating area is attractive and quieter than in some restaurants.

Great atmosphere, food is nothing special.

By Sergio McGreg |

Service is good. The food is nothing exceptional, they don't fry much so they stay on the healthy side but taste could be better. If you are on a business trip and want to bring clients this is the place. It is also a good place where to bring someone you want to impress. Just the look of it will create a good atmosphere but please check if who you are inviting to eat with you is not an expert of Indian food. I mean it is not bad, just it doesn't impress if you know what Indian food really is.

modern Indian restaurant with good food and lacking service

By KweqSmanit |

East India has a unique decor and or ambience about it.Gone are the usual India maps or Shiva or Ganesh statues as found in the typical Indian restaurant, instead they are replaced with contemporaryish and modern paintings, prints, and furnishings, such as canopy style seating areas and draperies.Jazz style music played over the speakers rather than Hindi music. The menu had a wide variety of what I suppose I would call "Indian-fusion" for the lack of a better label. The food was delicious and the serving size was ample. There were some interesting Indian inspired nontraditional cocktails featured in the drink menu, as well as a decent sized selections of wines, imports, microbrews, and even some local drafts. The only big drawback for our party was the service. It seemed as though our food took longer than everyone elses and the staff ignored us rather than telling us why or asking if we needed another drink. When the food FINALLY came they offered us some fresh naan but they never really addressed nor apologized about the very long (40 minutes at least) wait. The staff seemed nice enough and there were seemingly plenty of them, but the restroom had the trash can full, debris on the floor, and standing water all over the sink area.It seems to be a popular restaurant and was full, and they could not handle the business.I would give a 3.8 out of 5 for the food yet a 1.8 out of 5 for the lack of efficient service.

Excellent Indian Restaurant!

By Dave K |

We've lived in Portland for just over two years, and I've been eating at Indian restaurants all over the world for three decades - and this was a fantastic first-time visit to the East India Co. The atmosphere was very relaxed, warm, clean and modern. We had made a reservation for two and were seated at a beautifully appointed booth, partitioned with elegant net-curtain. Very romantic. The waitress addressed me as 'Mr. Kelly', having remembered my name from the reservation - beautiful personal touch. Then came the food - it was incredible - bursting with complex flavors, tender chicken/lamb, and my dish with some serious heat (specifically asked for). It was also very reasonably priced for the location and quality. Our waitress was professional, knowledgable, caring but not overbearing. An all round excellent dining experience - we'll be back.

Bad service, decent food and pricey

By HandsofAloha |

Prentencious is the best description, the food and spices are authentic but a ltlle too artsy for Indian food . The service is absolutely pathetic, the only person paying any attention at all was the busboy. After waiting and waiting and asking and asking the waitress finally showed up at the table to ask us for our drink order ?? We of course immediately ordered appetizers and dinner then the waiting really began. Need I write more ??

Truely A Party In Our Mouths! The flavors of India meet Portland

By RachelleNadinePhotography |

Last night was our 13th wedding anniversary. Because we wanted a party in our mouth, we were very selective on which Indian restaurant we selected. After spending 30 minutes reading hundreds of reviews we chose this restaurant. Walking in you are greeted by an upscale atmosphere and tasteful decor. We arrived just prior to 7 PM and were able to request the banquet style semi private booth, Which added to the romance factor for our anniversary dinner. Two appetizers we ordered were the, Samosa Chaat and the Tandoori Khumbi (marinated mushrooms). These samosas were the most power packed flavored samosas we have ever tasted- Definitely not for those who enjoy the mild version of samosas- But absolutely perfect for us! The Mushrooms were out of this world! The most flavorful mushrooms you will ever have in your whole life, they paired perfectly with the samosas. For our main courses which we shared we ordered Goan Jhinge Ka Salan, Which was shrimp in a tomato-based season sauce. Absolutely complex in flavor and depth, We used our Indian garlic bread to soak up every last drop from the bowl. Our second entrée was Korma Chicken, which was surprisingly very mild in flavor. It did however, complemented the shrimp dish perfectly. Personally I wanted a little bit more spice to the Korma so I added some of the spicy mint chutney to it. For some reason the waitress who seated us and took our order did not come by the whole time, however the other busboys and waiters filled our drinks promptly and were very courteous to help. Since we were on a special anniversary date we did not mind the relaxed and laid-back atmosphere of the service, on account of our needs being met. This restaurant definitely is not one we would bring our children to, even though they would enjoy the flavors of the food it is more refined in atmosphere. We are already planning our next trip back there and will bring our international guests with us. This truly was the party in our mouth we were looking for and left 100% percent satisfied.

Great Indian food, with a hint of Japan

By Cphototravel |

The appetizers we tried are to die for - especially the samosa's and the masala chicken wings. An excellent balance among the spices. Best to wash down with some Chakra beer. The owners previously operated a number of Indian restaurants in Japan, so the taste was incredibly nostalgic of the meals I previously had at those restaurants.

Very nice Authentic North Indian Food!

It is a nice cozy restaurant with an exotic ambiance. Good menu very friendly staff nice presentation.

My go to for Indian food

By Diane P |

Despite the uninspiring exterior and the often empty bar, the restaurant typically has a good crowd. The food is absolutely the best Indian food in portland and I put it among my favorite restaurants here of any cuisine! I've tried many of the dishes and have not been disappointed. My work colleagues from India always go here-it's their favorite for Indian food also! Excellent!

Very friendly resturant

By Lamia |

U should go to this resturant once you arrive Portland , the food is great , the service is excellent and the waiters are more then friendly .

Very Tasty

By NeverWork |

This is a very good choice for Indian food. We walked from the Westin hotel a few blocks away and had a reservation here on a Friday night. Absolutely no complaints. Very nice decor and a comfortable setting- a peaceful, Zen experience as one person wrote. The app's were very large servings, as was the deliciously-prepared fresh Naan bread. Each entree was delicious, with plenty to take home. I would return here, and I love good Indian food.

Tasty food

By SimplyAmit |

Not everywhere in US you get good Indian food with authentic taste. Being my first visit to Portland, I was not expecting this but the food tastes real authentic Indian. Must go for Indian food.

Good Indian food if you are hankering....

By P_K_Richardson |

We stopped here with friends based on the trip advisor reviews and location ( we were downtown). The restaurant was lovely. It has a decent menu w all of the Indian favorites. My favorites were the shared channa masala (chickpeas) and samosa chaat. My korma was pretty basic, and my husband could have used a bit more heat in his 5 star” vindaloo. The breads ( roti, naan) were a little crispy for our liking. But it scratched itch of “must get curry”.

The best of India

By niles02 |

Service is mediocre so be patient. The food is very tasty, well prepared and seasoned just right. The layout of the restaurant is poor. It seems that those without a reservation are placed in a less desirable location. If so, a very bad idea.

Mixed Experience

By CarloCowboy |

Long anticipated meal at this newly located Indian restaurant in downtown Portland. Food was quite good, though not spectacular, and overpriced. Service was mediocre, and the owner or manager hovered. Atmosphere was quite nice seated in a booth toward the back, but restaurant layout is confusing, with most of the front taken up by an empty bar. Most disturbing was the "gratuity" added to the bill for a table of five. We typically tip well above the 15-18% range, and the additional 18% tacked onto the bill was not a financial issue, but was insulting and without notice. After paying, we reviewed the menu for any notice that an additional amount would be added to the bill at 5 (understanding that tables of 6 or more commonly command an automatic additional tip amount). But, no such notice. Disappointing end to what we were looking forward to.

Excellent in every aspect

By cymru2611 |

Great décor, excellent food and appealing selection of drinks. Service was speedy and courteous. Highly recommended!

We shall return!

By kentexuk75 |

The food is excellent lots of variety, my lamb Shekh Kebab with Bombay potatoes was yummy! We were 18 Brit & Irish Expats and 17 were very happy with their meals. The server Renee is a hard working lovely lady who deserves a medal for having to deal with a group of demanding hungry/thirsty expats LOL Great ambience, busy cocktail bar as was the restaurant...all in all a really fun Saturday night!! Our 4th time dining here with a large group...couldn't have been better.

Consistent Food, Great Ambiance

By Aarthi S |

East India PDX is our go to place for family birthdays, anniversaries and other special celebrations. The food is not 100% authentic in taste, but is delicious all the same. What I like best is that the taste, spice level and quantity of food has been pretty consistent and we have been regulars for over 4 years. The restaurant staff are attentive and pleasant for the most part. I will say here that I think it is largely because we are regulars her and have built a rapport with the staff. In the early years there have been some rude staff who fortunately aren't to be seen anymore. If you're vegetarian, I highly recommend their Paneer Tikka appetizer and Kerala Vegetable. If you get Renee to wait on your table, consider yourself lucky! Unless your going during the week, it makes sense to call ahead and make a reservation.

Best Mango Lassi!!!

By Milton H |

This is a very good Indian restaurant. Firstly, they have the best mango lassi I've ever had. It was cool, thick, and creamy. It was a perfect blend of the tartness of plain yogurt and the sweetness of fresh mango. We had the lamb biryani which was very tasty with a beautiful blend of Indian spices. The lamb was very tender and the rice was quite good. The portion size was easily enough for 3 people. The tandoori mixed grill was very good with salmon, lamb, chicken, tofu, and a mixed salad. The paratha was hot, soft, and pleasing to the palate. The service was good and all the staff were polite, friendly, and welcoming. We will definitely be returning to the East India Company.

Expensive, but satisfying meal ...

By Bryan H |

Went here with friends on a Friday evening, and it was mysteriously not that busy. It's not cheap, so maybe that's the reason -- for the service, food and atmosphere were all excellent. Our waiter was charming and perhaps one of the best waiters I've had in Portland in a long time. Bravo!

A terrific family dinner

By Ash O |

We were thrilled to visit and thoroughly enjoyed our menu selections, all of which were superb. We started with the Samosa Chaat which were spicy and perfect. Entrees included the wonderful Bhuna Gosht, an excellent Lamb Biryani, a favorite Vindaloo, and a really good Kerala Lamb. Accompanied by rice and some highly enjoyable Naan’s the whole family looks forward to returning for another occasion.

Not a disappointment!

By Zialucia |

Tried this place based on desire for Indian food and the fact it had decent reviews. We were not disappointed. It is a bit pricey, but not outrageous. Good sized portions. Nice tandoor spices. Friendly service although a little slow (very busy) and our server forgot our sides of potatoes. I would return most definitely.

Family friendly, good food and service

By Sara M |

The atmosphere was very inviting. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had three dishes. The chicken tangine was ok but the spicy lamb was excellent.

The worst service we have ever had anywhere

By brspdx |

Unfortunately, the dining experience we just had here was terrible. Once our server took our order, we never saw her again, except for when she dropped our bill on the table and ran away. We had to ask the busser, other servers and the manager where our naan was, where our starter was...and almost an hour later, where our dinner was. Too bad, because the food was pretty good, but the service was so awful it was like a Saturday Night Live routine for bad service. We will never go back to this place.

Another Excellent Meal at East India Company

By LegacyPlanner |

Excellent service by Beppe. She took great care with the kitchen to make sure my meal was gluten and dairy free. The bartender made a superb Moscow mule. The biryani was a bit too spicey for me but my colleague loved the spice level on her dish. We will return. Easy parking on the street. Good attention to COVID rules.

Always good food

By Ben M |

We have come to know both the owner and his wait staff over four years of dining here. Food never disappoints. Wait staff are attentive and helpful. Late night eating is a pleasure. Love the booths, bar mixes a good martini!

One of my Favorites!

By hmariecj |

I come here every couple months and I love it every time! I've never had a problem with the service, they are always very nice and quick with our food. I always get the rosemary bread when I come, it's so GOOD! The food here is great and plenty to satisfy. I love the atmosphere, it's like a romantic dim lighting, it's very calming. I definitely recommend this place!

GROSS!

By Pat W |

I have tried many Indian cuisines before, but this one does not feels like 'fresh' which is why I felt sickness in my stomach I guess. We were the only guests in the restaurant and unsure how old was the food which we got.

Best Indian in North-West!

By Ammitabh |

Yes, this is probably the best Indian in Oregon and North-West. And I have possibly tried them all... Been here few times and never been disappointed.

I'm in heaven

By Robert B |

This was one of the most wonderful Indian meals I've ever had. What was even more special was my wife who had the special needs they helped her so much and they've made a really delicious meal for her. As usual they are very hospitable and had an enjoyable time. Another feature is really fine decor or so who's it was really upscale and great.

Delicious Indian Feast

By AliceMariam |

We enjoyed an Indian feast. The Samosa Chaat were gorgeous and flavorful, the Hyderabadi Lamb Biriyani was delicious with the raita and the chicken korma. We got the food a medium spice level which was a perfect level of spice. The service was excellent.

Skip this one

By shantanu s |

We had heard about this through some friends and decided to pay a visit (given how much we love Indian food). We ordered vegetarian food, Paneer Tikka to start with - because that’s the litmus test. If you let that go wrong, there’s not much you can get right. So we got our Paneer Tikka served lukewarm with mushy onions and bell peppers. It clearly screamed of ‘staleness’. Disappointing. Next we ordered Kadhai paneer and paratha and garlic naan. Kadhai paneer could have been so much better had it been prepared as a semi-gravy. Pity that it had really no gravy and only cubes or paneer- good thing though that the paneer this time around was soft and tasted better. The breads - paratha and naan were really good though but without good curries it’s not much to go with. Not worth it, overall, given the price you pay for the food at this place, I’d say skip this one and try some place else.

Very good food and service

By Tubamom |

We were here with a group of 20, about half were from India. The Indians ordered a variety of dishes for everyone to share. All of the food was very good and the service was great. We'll definitely return.

Yum Indian food but service can improve

By amitps |

We got take out for dinner from East India. The food was yummy. However, the service (even to order the food over the phone) was hard. I had to call multiple times to order and then I was told I am going to get Lamb Chops in my platter but then when we got the order they weren't there. I think they can improve the service.

Excellent customer service

By anushatajul |

Best Indian food in town. What can I say about the server. I think she was India.Great smile, super friendly, very knowledgeable about Indian food. Eventhough they were super busy our server made time to check on us and liook after us very well. I will go again and will ask for her as our server. Very highly recommended 👍

If looking for authentic Indian food---avoid this place!

By little_11 |

We've been to East India couple of times since it was recommended by some of my friends. My husband and I are foodies and love authentic Indian curries. This place offers nothing that comes even close to authentic Indian dish. On top of that, they charge an exorbitant price for a simple dish. So, if you are also looking for that Indian flavor you could possibly avoid this place. Try going there once to enjoy the atmosphere and for the appetizers.

Unique cocktails and great Indian food!

By Marciasview |

Good Indian food in downtown Portland. Vegan and Vegetarian options. Must try cocktails. They had some unique offerings with tamarind, ginger or chillies.

Excellent experience!

By Bryan H |

First off, let me get the negatives out of the way: one of the staff tried to sell us her own private nutrition business for a LONG time. (A quick, subtle statement would have sufficed -- which we could have pursued if interested.) Our main waiter was a bit rough around the edges. In all seriousness, he explained to us what Pakoras were (we didn't ask or indicate we didn't know) and in general lacked the sophistication of the restaurant's atmosphere. I actually enjoyed the quirkiness of the staff, so even this wasn't a complete negative, but I urge them to be cautious and read their clientele more carefully and sensitively. Now, for the pluses ... the cocktail I had while small (for ten bucks) was the best one I've had in years, and I sipped it slowly, savoring every bit of it. Hats off to the bartender! The samosas were amazing, probably the best I've had anywhere -- presented in a fresh and original way. That alone deserves to be commended! Our main courses weren't quite as tasty as they could have been, although my veggie Korma was quite nice. (The saag paneer was, I felt, the weakest part about the meal.) We had a table off to the side, which was perfect for a night of animated conversation and gossip -- and we lingered there for hours. The staff did, I must admit, accept our "camping out" ... and we had an expensive, but memorable evening there. The decor is fabulous, and many Indians were eating there the night we went, always a good sign. Best Indian food I've had in Portland in ages. You must try it!

Yum!

By Clarissa R |

This place has great atmosphere. I love the stained glass! All of the food was soooo good! I loved the paneer tikka masala and mango lassi! I wish I could have eaten more! Waitstaff were very polite and welcoming. I think perhaps they were understaffed or there were new folks because service was a little scattered and didn't quite seem to match up to the decor/food quality but it certainly wasn't even close to bad. I liked the waiter. I hope I can go back!

Best Indian I’ve had in 5 years!

By Jeff M |

My wife is from England, and she knows what good Indian food tastes like! This places ROCKS. The samosa were incredible. The pakora, were ok. My wife had the lamb saag, I had the shrimp vindaloo. The portion sizes were awesome. Very good table service from our server, Prince. We are from the middle of Washington state. We would drive back here just to eat more, it was that good. No Indian buffet here! Great setting, cozy booths. Perfect for a night out. Jeff and Angie

Favorite East Indian Restaurant Still

By DonnaPortlandOR |

We are fond of East Indian cuisine and tend to seek it out when we travel. Closer to home, we used to find East India Co. convenient for its proximity to work and not too far from our house, but no longer work downtown and have move out toward Hillsboro in the past year. So we've been trying other places with a shorter commute, but for food and particularly atmosphere, nothing else compares to East India Co. for my family. We recently celebrated a special event there and more than confirmed our good impressions. It's so nice to have a more upscale environment versus the more hole in the wall or more casual spots we've often tried west or on the road. This time the chef came to our table to ask for our feedback. We assured him we we were quite pleased with our food, including complimentary poppadum's, Murg Tikka (which I really love and have not had anything comparable elsewhere), Murg Tikka Masala, Gobi Mutter, rice, naan, and mango lassis. Meat was tender and well seasoned, spicy but not too hot. It may take and extra 20 minutes or more each way for us now, but it remains our favorite. It's a special place.

Nice!

By bnote |

For some reason finding a good Indian restaurant in the states is super hard. I can't put my finger on what the difference is, but in Canada it just seems so much better! East India Co. changed that for us, offering delicious food. It was a gorgeous restaurant and I felt a little underdressed in jeans but the service was friendly and prompt. Nice fluffy naan, delicious curries, service with a smile. What more can you ask for? The only bad thing I have to say is that I heard the cooks and servers fighting in the kitchen rather loudly and it was awkward. The restaurant was also empty so that added to it, and I found it a little pricey compared to other restaurants in the area.

What a gem!

The entire staff here is hands down the most friendly, accommodating people I've ever met in the restaurant business! We had a 14 month old with us who created a MESS, and they could not have been more casual about it. The food here is AWESOME! Cannot believe I've waited so long to eat here!

Fancy service, lame curry

By amturnip |

It's a stylish space, dignified but not oppressive. The service is careful and attentive. The multi-level dining area is well insulated from the street and its various areas are tastefully partitioned, so each table gives a feeling of place amidst a geography. Instead of a lunch buffet, or just one main dish per person, East India Co has a commendable and well-conceived menu of complete multi-course lunches. Mine included a thin but pleasant daal soup, an average naan bread, an awe-inspiring fish starter dish, and a curry main course. The curry was a disappointment. While a proper indian curry is a slow-cooked orange stew, where the chef demonstrates artistry through the blend of spices and the obedient chicken succumbs and disintegrates gracefully, East India Co brought me a red bath prominently featuring sweet peppers and firm, flavorless chicken pieces that would rather not have been there. I shared my horror with the server. It was explained to me that each curry is "made to order" so of course it cannot be stewed slowly. Now the problem is, that if you are not going to get a superb lunch, or at any rate a logically defensible lunch, you might as well not go to East India Co at all.

Nice Indian food in downtown Portland

By Balasubramanya Basuvaraj |

Good and tasty food in a nicely set decor in downtown Portland. The Murg (Chicken) Tikka was very tasty and properly cooked. The Chicken Kerala Masala was just the right amount of spicy. The chicken biriyani was presented very nicely and was tasty as well. Easily accessible in downtown Portland and close to the shopping centers as well. So a nice place to grab a bite while taking a break from shopping.

Very good Indian food in the Pacific Northwest

By Sunset151 |

It's always fun to take someone who doesn't think they like Indian food to a good Indian restaurant and watch them enjoy. This one has several tandoor dishes, and we enjoyed murg tikka. They also have a section where you first pick the preparation, then the main ingredient. For example, you could choose vindaloo as a preparation, then choose whether it was made with veg, chicken, lamb, or shrimp. They have dum biryani from Hyderabad, which is unusual but worth ordering for the southern Indian flavor profile. Naan is very good too. The complaint - several menu items they no longer make and they don't seem to be in a hurry to update the menu.

Great place

My wife and I tried this place, and wasn't disappointed. Service was fast and helpful, while the food was plentiful and delicious, a little spendy but well worth it

Expensive, Ordinary

Wonderful waitress. She really cared and worked hard to make sure we had a pleasant meal, but she was the best part do the evening.

Excellent Indian food in a comfortable setting

By RTandRT |

We have eaten a lot of Indian food, some sublime, much wretched. This place is certainly on the better end, we had Butter Chicken, Lamb Vindaloo, and onion naan, all were really excellent. The vindaloo was very spicy, if you like your food that way you will be in heaven (as we were), but order something else if you like it mild. The butter chicken was wonderful, and the naans also were great. The service was fast and pleasant, and the cost was no more than I would expect from a first rate downtown Indian resaurant. If you like good Indian food, give this place a try, you won't be sorry.

Authentic Indian with a great atmosphere

We had a delicious meal once again at East India Co. Casual yet elegant atmosphere (ask for a curtained booth), very reasonable prices, and our server (Dani) was tremendous.

Another Fine Meal at the EICo

By LegacyPlanner |

EIC is my go to for Indian cuisine in Portland and last night was no different other than the noise of the air conditioner in the ceiling was overpowering. We asked to move and our server allowed us to pick our own table further from the noisy, thrumming fan. The king salmon dish is not to be missed. Where other restaurants might cheat a little and serve something other than expensive chinook filets, the chef makes a mouthwatering, perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection salmon dish. Don’t miss it. The server was attentive and was cautious with my celiac and dairy food allergies. Fix the air conditioner and it’s back to 5 stars all around!

Excellent!

We had a great meal. The food, ambiance and service were all fantastic, we will be back!! We ordered almost everything on the menu and it was all fantastic. Great place for a date night or a family meal.

Really loved our meal

By Tonya C |

Great service for lunch. Enjoyed the house red wine and shared some garlic naan. I got the chicken vindaloo (lunch size portion - you can get dinner size if you'd like). They even made it spicy as I asked (usually with my pale complexion many restaurants underestimate what I mean by spicy). It was flavorful without being to heavy on the vinegar. My husband has chicken tikka masala. His was delicious as well. Walking distance to our hotel near river. We will be back. Great server/ manager interaction. They are considering adding some Spanish wines to their selection- I think a Tempranillo would pair beautifully.

Possibly my BEST Indian Restaurant experience ever!

By Rustyute |

When it comes to Indian food, I have tried many, many restaurants and have cooked this style regularly for family and friends for almost 20 years. To rave about food and the entire experience means this place was special! It started with the presentation of the dishes, ...surprisingly elegant. Wow! (and I thought..., the menu didn't look to be highly priced?) The meal was truly wonderful, with mixtures of many various flavours to tease the palate. Even the steamed Basmati rice was more fragrant than I normally expect. And so flavoursome from the addition of small amounts of cardamom and cumin. When questioned, my waitress explained that every dish is prepared individually and not bulk prepared in advance. She explained this sometimes means that the meals make take a little longer to reach the table. I was there on a quiet night and didn't experience anything unusual about the time from order to table. In fact I thought is was very prompt (but perhaps it was the excellent attention from the efficient and friendly waitress?) When it comes to Indian, it takes a lot (for me) to deliver a perfect score. Thank you East India Co, chef and wait staff (Sandra in particular) for delivering a welcome surprise for such a very reasonable outlay.

Under the radar, top shelf Indian place!

By brianbellepente |

After just writing a damning review of another local restaurant, I felt compelled to balance it with a positive one ... East India has become one of our family's favorite restaurants in downtown for both eat-in and take out ... all of the dishes are well executed, made with fresh ingredients, and exquisitely flavored even when ordered mild to please our teenager ... it is a bit more expensive than most of the other Indian places in town, but worth every penny ... the only things keeping it from an "excellent" rating are somewhat indifferent service and an uninspired wine list ... if you are in Portland and craving a great tikka masala or saag paneer or garlic naan, etc, this is your place!

A MUST!

By traveltounravel |

We had a one day stop in Portland on our way to Hawaii & rented a car, and this was the only place we cared about. We moved away & have missed this place terribly. The manager remembered us, as one week, in 2014, we dined 4 out 7 nights. She was a warm, welcoming face & it was so nice to be remembered!! This place has the best Indian food & this trip did not fail to completely satisfy us. It's not just a meal, it is poetry on plates. Tikka Masala, of course is our favorite. Channa Masala & garlic naan are just absolutely perfect. If you love Indian food & you are seeking soul-satisfying food, look no further!

Wonderful salmon dish

By diz333 |

Visited Portland and met friends for dinner. One is vegetarian. She and I had the "Muchli Ka Tikka" - "grilled King Salmon marinated with roasted garlic, mustard, curry, fresh ginger and lemon." Was awesome. I love salmon but had never had King salmon. She had, and said it was good because of its higher fat content. Whatever it was, it was great. Restaurant is pretty small, so make a reservation.

Good and Spicy!

By KaarenC |

Three of us went for dinner mid week. Service was fast, food was delicious, but be prepared: even mild is spicy!

Service was pathetic.

By Mahmud M |

I made reservation for 4 We got there on time. Food was good there is no problem with taste n was dine very well. Service was slow you have to wave at the waiter to get their attention. Hope they will correct it as it's the most important sector in this business.

Average- except for the lamb chops!

By Sher S |

We have eaten here 6 times. This last time I felt the over all quality of the food was down, but the lamb chops are still magnificent (mustardy spice glaze).. rice was also perfect, but the peas and corns were marginal overdone and over spiced. Lamb shank dish was surrounded by a tomato paste that wasn't to my tastes. Also, noted a complete change over of staff from past years. Service was okay.

Excellent lunch

By ak2outside |

My husband and I split the chicken tikki masala and the chicken vindalo and a side of garlic naan. We were not disappointed. Very high end decor.

LUNCH MENU TOTALLY DOWNGRADED

By daisyranger |

We used to eat lunch here several times weekly, enjoying the lunch special which featured soup, naan, vegetable, pappadams with dips, and a curry of the day. Recently the lunch menu has drastically changed- no more curry of the day, no brown rice, no vegetable, no pappadams, and naan is a separate charge. Only 2 chicken curries offered- both mediocre. We will not be back for lunch!

Another Fine Experience

By Don53 |

I usually visit Portland every summer and always enjoy the great dining opportunities (aside from the food carts, which are wonderful and cheap!). Sometimes I'm in the mood for a more formal eating experience. This is now my third visit to East India Co. while in the city, and I would say it has become one of my favorite Portland restaurants. I have always found the wait staff to be cordial and very attentive; all the dishes I have ordered have been well-prepared, nicely presented, and delicious. The restaurant decor is very unique and elegant. Meal prices are very reasonable. This is certainly a place you should try if you enjoy Indian cuisine! Conveniently located near the South Park blocks.

Indian delights

By financialadvisorNW |

I've visited East India Co. twice in the past year, based on the recview in Portland Monthly. Wow! What tasty food!! The menu is expansive, offering a wide variety of foods that fit nearly every diet. The naan is perfect, the curries fabulous, the service attentive. And the mango cheesecake is to die for! Lightest and most fluffy cheesecake I've ever had, made me want to order a second piece :)

Very good Indian food, friendly service

By Craig B |

Went after a late afternoon concert around 7 on a Sunday. The service was friendly and the food excellent. I am writing this several weeks after we ate, and can't remember the specific dishes. However the appetizer, and entrees were delicious. I am not Indian so can't speak for the authenticity, but we did see several Indian patrons, so that is always a good sign when eating ethnic food.

Best Indian Food in Portland

By GlobalGramma |

More expensive than most Indian restaurants, but also more high end in terms of quality of dishes served and a quiet ambience that allows for conversation. Every dish was delicious (the grilled fish was delicious, but a bit dry). Dishes can be quite spicy, even for the mild, so if spice is not your thing, be sure to advise server to have the seriously tone the spice down. Only a few truly vegan options. Located In the heart of downtown Portland, situated behind the Library in the 800 block of SW 11th Avenue, street parking in the evenings is usually easy.

Authentic and delicious

By Christophe_JSB |

A thing that never won’t mislead you is the rate of Indian people eating there. It is high and there is a reason for it. I trust them.
