This is the best mexican restaurant I've ever been. Tortilla soup is unbelievable, everything is fresh, awesome atmosphere, great chips and salsa, large and tasty meals. The service is simple but nice.

If you're looking for the Authentic Mexican experience, there are dozens of better options in the LA area. But if you're looking for some tasty food at a reasonable price, in a fun setting, this place is worth checking out. The enchiladas are very good, and the margaritas are not to be missed!

The food is great and I love the atmosphere and history. They need to update their carpet and booths as it makes the place feel a little dirty, but the friendly staff and incredible food make up for it. The salsa is especially yummy and they have bomb pops for kids.

This restaurant may have been established in 1923 but it was new to us! We had intended to eat at the Santa Monica seafood market but when we arrived, the cafe was unexpectedly closed. With the aid of trip advisor and the “what’s nearby” feature we decided to try El Cholo. It was a pleasant surprise. We were greeted right away (and while I wanted to sit outside ) the group chose inside dining . I’m Glad we did, the ambience made you realize you were visiting an old institution ( in a good way) there were family photos from the glamorous black and white days to enjoy and just a general feel of nostalgia. Our server immediately dropped off refillable baskets of chips and salsa. The salsa was mild and delicious. Tasted really fresh! My husband and daughter ordered the filet mignon tacos that they gave a hearty thumbs up to and I had the chicken enchilada, also a hit. The beer was served with a well chilled glass and the server was attentive and friendly. It was a delightful visit and we would return again!

Food was average. Service very lethargic! Requested additional salsa but arrived after half of my food was consumed. The place was not very busy to account for this. I have been a regular customer since 1969! The quality is not what it used to be. The menu proces are very high. On top of this, there is no self parking. Valet parking charge of $3 (plus tip) is outrageous. The signature Enchilada-Taco combination plate was nothing to ride about.

Mexican food is my favorite and I love the food at this place. My ultimate favorite is their nacho's with cheese. I'm a cheese lover and they have plenty. I also love their beef enchiladas and drinks.

This is an old time restaurant. Take a look at the menu, and with the item is the year that the item was introduced. 1920's, 1930's etc My choice was a little more up to date, 1984 Fajitas with Chicken, and I found it to be very good. We had a table of 12 high school friends, meeting up before the high school football game down the street. Great place for our dinner and drinks.

I attended a wedding anniversary--party was easily 100 people. Parking easy, but became congested as we left. We had entire large room, and good servers, working hard. Lot of chips, first salsa watery, spicy salsa good for some, too hot for others, cowboy up! Guacamole was served generously in large bowls, but was crushed avocado, needs more seasoning. Strawberry magaritas watery-traditional bar mix, not bad. I had famous green corn tamales, serving was generous, BUT, cheese interior was barely cooked(mala presentacion), waiters too busy,to ask them to return to oven, just picked at them. Friends across table had fish tacos--not bad---fish was dried out---they picked at them. Long history, short a bit on quality.

Giant restaurant with "family booths" all over. I'm normally not a fan of this closed boxes, I like to see what other people are having, how the staff are doing and so on. But here at El Cholo I think it worked a little better. We were a party of 5 big Mexican food lovers an we were very excited about going here. We've heard a lot about it and one of us even visited around 10 years ago. We arrived, got seated and got the menu, no lines like there used to be, not as many customers as I had expected. Everyone of us ordered something different from the menu. The food was OK, I have definitely tried better Mexican food. There's was absolutely nothing spicy on my enchiladas. It was a bit flat and the meat was dry. they make the guacamole at the table witch I think is a bit weird and gives u a feeling of being at a cheap Mexican Benihana

Gloria made the bar rock! Tap beer and great cocktails! Bar specials M to F 3/6! Great guacamole! Tap beer and homemade chips!

Been there forever but looks new and fresh. Great food, flan, margaritas. Been going there for almost 50 years!

The food was excellent but we were there on a very crowded Friday night. There was a concert at the nearby Staples Center, so I think it may have been busier than expected, as we tried to make reservations but were told it shouldn't be too busy. We were put at a sort of in the way table that they deemed the Nacho Table, where you guessed it, you get free nachos. I'd go here again as the servers were pleasant, the location was good, and everyone in our party of five had a tasty dinner.

We came here for lunch and we didn't want a lot of food, so we got a 1 item lunch. It was very reasonable snd it was very good. The tamale was very fresh and it was one of the best I've had. The chips and salsa was very fresh and I loved their iced tea. The burrito my son had was huge. A great place to have lunch.

Very good Mexican food - we were lucky to be seated at the El Cholo table and were given free nachos for the night! The coconut margaritas were outstanding - frozen coconut with a toasted coconut rim - and worth a visit just for them!

One of this city's oldest restaurants is also one of its best. The walls tell the nearly 100-year history of El Cholo with love. The food is prepared with care and delivered in beautiful presentations. We had an appetizer and two entrees, but tasted more than a dozen dishes. Every one of them above average. This place is a must-stop if visiting Los Angeles and worthy of repeat visits if you are local. The Sonora Style Enchilada - a casserole style dish - is from the original 1923 menu and still may be the tastiest dish on the menu. With the tacos, taquitos, flautas, relleno, talames, and other items we tasted, you won't make a wrong choice.

Service was awfully slow at lunch time. I had to call the servers each time I need refills or even a napkin. The tastier part of my luck were actually the chips and salsa. I think the place is famous and quite classical, has ben open for quite some years with much success, but I would not go back for Mexican fare.

This long-time establishment is still going strong after so many years. The atmosphere is still there and the food is consistent. There is plenty of Valet parking as well as on the street. I ordered chili rellanos expecting an traditional chili stuffed with cheese. Instead, I got a round cheese patty with some chili chopped into it...not what I expected. Rice & beans were good & so was the salsa.

We went to the El Cholo on South Flower Street in downtown LA. The best Mexican restaurant in the area -- friendly service, well-made and generously poured margaritas, terrific menu, fresh food. You can't ask for more from a traditional Mexican restaurant. The photos on the wall are fascinating as well. One of our favorites.

Honestly, I was surrounded by SO much family I didn't even enjoy the food much, I think I just ate it! The menu was pretty interesting and different from our menus from Texas. Yes I'm from Texas. I got the enchiladas because it didn't look too different, they were OK, the cheese wasn't my favorite. My neighbor got tortilla soup and she said it was really good. The margaritas were very tasty. I remember those! I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, I noticed that they put private parties away from the traffic. It was a Friday night and the parking was very busy so I expected to see a busy place inside but it wasn't too busy in our area. When i made a comment about this, one of the local's response said it was because they keep the bigger parties away from everyone else. I really like that they do this. We are able to get a more private feeling.

So glad we came here! Everything was good, from the friendly staff with excellent service to the great food. There were 5 of us on our last night in LA and we were exploring the area around staples center when we found this place. Was truly impressed with the food and will definitely come again

This restaurant has great food at great prices, stop there before you go to a concert or game at Staples Center and Nokia.....Park your car there too way cheaper than anything close.

This place is a true classic that I've been going to for 20 plus years. The food is good and the drinks are solid. The menu offers large plates of family style Mexican food. The place has a nice big bar with comfy chairs. The guacamole, chili con carne, and LA lemonade are the best.

I dined here with a group of 15 people and our server did a great job waiting on a large party and taking all of our special request food orders (very LA of us). The interiors are classic old world Mexican done very well however. They have an extensive margarita and drink list and the food was great! Exactly what you hope for in good Mexican fare.

The place has been around over 100 years and is popular but the food is really nothing special and even a bit bland. Service was friendly and prices are ok but this is not a place for authentic or memorable Mexican food.

I have been to El Cholo several time but I always find myself disappointed. When it comes to Mexican food, I expect spicy, lime and cilantro infused meat. I find food here blend and too creamy. Perhaps I am accustomed to Tex-Mex style, but El Cholo needs more kick to its food.

We had a reservation for four and were promptly seated. Service was fine. We received a refill of chips and salsa while waiting for our appetizer. Our drinks were served in a timely manner. The appetizer was the guacamole prepared at the table. We were able to have the server add the ingredients of our choice. It was delicious and they brought more chips which were very fresh. Two of us ordered a special of the evening which was a tampinquena steak, enchilada, beans, onions and peppers. The enchilada was delicious. The steak was not a thin peace of steak but fairly thick and we had ordered medium rare. It was tasty as were the beans. The grilled chile lit my mouth of fire. Go carefully on eating one. We would return.

We were looking for good authentic Mexican restaurant and El Cholo was recommend to us from the valet parking guy . The moment we entered , I felt that this is not my place . The place was dark , with low ceiling , bulky old furnitures . There was an unpleasant odor of an unventilated environment . The cervice was good but the food was below average . I wouldn't dine there again .

The Uber driver suggested this restaurant and I'm glad I went. The food was good. My friend got the chicken fajitas and I got the cheese enchiladas. My only negative comment is that they didn't have very many options for vegetarians or pescatarians. Everything had beef or chicken in it so I ended up with the cheese enchiladas. They were good so I would go back again.

I have only been here once but the food and service were great! If you're looking for authentic Mexican food this is the place. You will not be disappointed! Oh, don't forget to try the margaritas. They are amazing!

There are reasons I have remained a loyal El Cholo Restaurant customer since my first visit in 1964 with a couple of UCLA College friends. Yes, the food is great! Yes, the service is also great and has remained so for the 54 years I have been a loyal El Cholo customer! Our last visit adds to the family lore when we received exemplary service on a Los Angeles high school graduation night when it appeared all high school graduates converged on the popular LA Mexican restaurant location. Two of our grandsons graduated together and asked to have dinner at El Cholo's, their favorite restaurant. When we arrived we were told that it was impossible to accommodate a party of 10, but one of our waiters overheard this and asked if we could wait a couple of minutes to see what he could do. Again we were accommodated and our grandsons were able to celebrate their graduation at the their favorite Mexican food restaurant. There are perks to being a loyal El Cholo customer!!!!

This has the best and truly authentic Mexican food. The tortilla soup is to die for and everything is fresh and tastes home made!

El Cholo has been around since 1923! The one we went to was on Western Ave., in Los Angeles. The margarita was very good, very fresh tasting. The chips and salsa were very good, warm, salty, just like they were just made, which they probably were. I had the shrimp fajitas. There was a ton of shrimp and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I should have had rice instead of beans, but next time. My son had the Senora Enchiladas, beautiful to look at, and said it was amazingly delicious as well. I would definitely go back there just to try some of the other yummy looking stuff! I also am now writing about restaurants and other things to do on my blog at: likeahummingbird3.blogspot.com

This restaurant was recommended by my hotel's concierge. I went with a bunch of colleagues. We all liked our table which was in the back room. Our food was delicious! And the signature guacamole was to die for. And the drinks were generous and awesome. Service was great, too! Highly recommended!

So my mom kept wanting to take us to this place, because she likes the food and it's piece of history here in the Los Angeles area. My husband and 3 kids and I really love Mexican food, so we were excited to go. The restaurant itself was easy to find, and had neat photos all over the place, and fun themed rooms. But the food was really average as far as Mexican food goes, same for the margaritas. I ordered carnitas, and truth be told, it was pretty bland, somewhat dry, and disappointing as far as taste. The platter itself was fun, came with lots of sides, and was enough to eat at home again for another meal. But I have had better carnitas at cheap Mexican restaurants even! And the margaritas, which are supposed to be famous, were really not anything special either. I am thankful my mom treated all of us, and it was a fun place to have a Sunday family meal. But if I had to pay that bill for such mediocre food, I would have had a heart attack.

This use to be a premier restaurant for it's flavor and service. The service was just OK, and the homemade taste and flavor of the food is gone!!! I was very disappointed in my meal and the and the flavor of the food. The food was more online of a fast food restaurant with the option of ordering a drink. :(

Went with a couple that hadn't been there for years and they seemed to like it very much. Between the four of us we only had 2 cocktails. The El Cholo Margarita was great. The chopped vegetable salad is wonderful and was shared by the four of us. We had one quesadilla, one chicken tac, one fish taco and one green corn tamale and a side of rice. No complaints......love the tamale and the quesadilla is very generous. Service was excellent. We sat on the patio and enjoyed it very much. Cost was $108.65 before tips.

Food was delicious. Food served in a timely manner. I really enjoyed the Chile verde. My boyfriend loved the hardshell chicken tacos. Great experience with a nice, cozy environment.

Had lunch there recently on a beautiful Wednesday. Nothing spectacular but safely consistent. Servers tend to be more mature and not bothersome which is a plus. Food is more old school American style mexican food which is fine for me but maybe not for everyone these days. Still love the chips and salsa.

People go here because its an old LA staple. I've been many times but honestly the food is not very good, the prices keep going up, and there are way better Mexican restaurants all over this city. I had the carne asada and it wasn't even mediocre it was just a bad piece of meat. I have felt sick since 1 in the morning and no doubt its the food. I realize its hard to screw up chicken fajitas or quesadillas but why pay up? Just to drive all the way down western for below average food? not worth it.

We first ate here in the 1960's and it still generates warmth just walking in the door. Little change in the menu. Valet parking a must. Just sit with a classic margarita and soak up the history. El Cholo reassures me that life goes on.

I can see why this place is popular. The serves are huge but tended to be a bit oily. Like previous reviews I like the corn chips & salsa on arrival. The nachos was tasty & our mains we found extremely generous so much so that we could not finish. Rookie error to eat so many corn chips. Interior quaint but a bit dated. Service pleasant.

El Cholo is a classic Mexican restaurant, known best for its green corn tamales. Actually now a chain, all with the same reputation for great food and service. I first ate in an El Cholo, in fact this particular location, which is the "motherhouse" for the rest, in 1977. It is a favorite destination, whether the "green corns" are in season or not. If you enjoy good, sometimes simple, Mexican cooking, this is the place to start.

Everyone in our party loved what they ordered. My fish (mahi mahi) tacos were delicious with cabbage escabeche, chipotle aoli, guac, rice, and black beans in a fried tortilla shell. The chips and salsa come to the table fresh and tasty. The service was friendly and efficient and the decor was darling. There is a large patio for outdoor covered dining. Really nice. I'd return tomorrow. The quesadilla came with onions, which the lady had requested not to have, though, so they had to make a new one. If you have special request, better be really clear.

Nice sit down place. It has a good old school feel to it. Decent ambience. I had a chimichanga and we had some tacos and different tortillas around the table. food was pretty decent. Service needed a little to be desired. However at it is one of LA's old school joints worth going to once for sure.

I have been enjoying this landmark LA restaurant since moving here in 1979. Quality of food and service remain consistently high. You can go fancier but you can't go better, imho. My favorite is the Burrito Dorado, a very large meat burrito smothered in cheese and tomato sauce. Comes with a small (unremarkable) salad and outstanding guacamole. Home-made tortilla chips and salsa arrive before the meal, and it takes supreme self-control not to pig out on them. Enchiladas also excellent. The margaritas are legendary.

I have had the Americanized Mexican food and wanted something different. El Cholo was recommended and I also do the same. The restaurant offers a menu based on the years of service to the community. I had a dish that was originally served when they first opened, "green Corn Combo". This establishment offered drinks that are also based on the different years they have been in business. The downside is the heat, the kitchen has AC but nowhere else, still, for me it added to the atmosphere and ambiance of the interior, lots of pictures and history. I came expecting something different and got it. Can't wait to return to downtown LA and revisit here.

After a long day of exploring the city, we decided to order in. After selecting nachos, an enchilada, and taquitos, we settled in for what turned out to be a very short wait. Unpacking the food, we noticed they sent us 5 orders of taquitos. Ok. When we opened the package, it was literally just the 5 taquitos inside. No lettuce. No sour cream. No garnishment of any kind. The taquitos were a masterpiece compared to what the nachos were like though. Chips and a little bit of melted cheese with a few jalapeños sprinkled around. I thought maybe they forgot the toppings until I read online it's their specialty. A waitress there is credited with introducing the first nachos to the area. I appreciate the history and nostalgia but do not charge me $7 for chips and a bit of melted cheese. Why not make this a free starter for your guests dining in and share your story while dropping a small complimentary plate (especially considering they give you free chips and salsa)? The sauce for the enchilada was good but overall a very unsatisfying meal and way overrated. Disappointing.

Old-school Mexican atmosphere with good service and decent food. We walked in with no reservation at 5:00 and were immediately seated. Server was very responsive and the food was quick to arrive.

The best Mexican Restaurant in the area.friendly staff. Nice to combine this fresh food with an amazing Margarita cocktail! We will back!

My friends and I went this afternoon (Saturday). The staff was super friendly and eager to serve us. The waiter was excellent. He came back to our table repeatedly to check on us. The servings we good size and the food was delicious. Will give this restaurant and their team 5 stars.

Southern California. The food continues to be consistently good. The atmosphere makes you think back to the old times and adds to the experience of eating at this original eatery. The margaritas are the best, and we used to buy a gallon of it and take it home to make margaritas for parties.

Good margaritas. Pitchers are offered but aren't listed on the menu. Food is pretty good. Basic mexican options - fajitas tacos etc.

TIP - walk thru the restaurant to the huge bar in the back - this is the place to be! Awesome atmosphere, great chips and salsa, large and tasty meals. This place is so much better than the LA Live area for an authentic local landmark. It can be packed on game days, but well worth the wait

Hadn't been to LA in quite some time and our friends suggested we meet at El Cholo LA. (Not the Santa Monica one.) The food was still great after all these years. My husband ordered carnitas and I had a tostada. We all had Margaritas. Fair prices and big plates of good food. Great time. Great service. Same waitresses!

Observed the clientele and see why the reviews are so good, sadly they would not know real or authentic Mexican food😔 Don't get me wrong, the food is ok and edible however the infamous restaurant disappoints me yet again and the margarita's are not worth the $$$ not even a tingle after 3 margaritas😔😔 The service was good though😃

We finished a busy Friday with dinner at the original El Cholo which is a family run restaurant starting in the 1920's. The staff was very helpful and patient with our questions about menu items. Everything was fantastic and even though we were there on a Friday night, the service was flawless and you never got a sense of being in a busy restaurant, although all the tables were full.

This is a great place in South Park without having to deal with Staples crowd and the like. Good food, good drinks, and fare prices for cosmopolitan address. In April of 2019, I got a little too tipsy and forgot my phone at the bar. After walking 4 city blocks down 9th heading back to my apt, me and my girl heard these thunderous footsteps coming up fast behind us. We turn around defensively only to see the bartender from El Cholo running towards us with my phone in hand. Rockstar save! Viva El Cholo for good times and good people.

My family and I went to the El Cholo Restaurant near Staples Center in late November before attending an LA Kings hockey game. Quite simply, it was not good. The chips and salsa were fine but the food was sub-par. In fact, I would compare the food to El Torito. I've eaten at El Cholo on Western (the original El Cholo) and the one in Santa Monica and both are head and shoulders above the El Cholo near Staples. Spend your money elsewhere. This place just isn't worth it and I won't be going back.

Delicious, Authentic Mexican food, large portions, free homemade chips and salsa and great customer service and the best margaritas. This restaurant will easily become your family favorite. and if your single it is a great place for dating , they have a cozy bar with fresh tasty drinks and patio area on the other side. Try it you wont regret it!

If the chips and hot sauce are good, then I stay. They were both good but I like hotter. The food was ok. I had enchiladas with rice and beans, I barely ate my food, it just was not up to my expectations. My friend had carnitas, which were dry and she also barely touched. People said this was more traditional Mexican, but I found it to be very similar to what I am used to in mediocre North Texas restaurant. Compared to South Texas Mexican, which is very traditional, this was not even close. If I lived here I would not feel the need to go back. Also, I believe it was $13.50 for two enchiladas with rice and beans. That was a little pricey for me, but may be those CA prices that they have no control over. But this meal in Texas would be around $8 or less.

We simply love El Cholo. They have some of the best Spanish food in Los Angeles. This is traditional Spanish food. If you want healthy, low fat Mexican food go elsewhere. Yes, they have lard in their beans and it is so good. The place itself has been around for many years. Parking is easy in their lot or on the street, but mind the signs. The interior is just so comforting, with a huge bar and a few dinning rooms with the most comfortable booths. Art is everywhere and photos that are fun to look at. The place is kept spotless and you would think it was just built. The exterior is also well maintained and they have the best neon light as signage. The service is friendly, fast and super sweet. Many of the employees have been there for years. The menu is large and the prices are fair for Los Angeles. We love their chips, made there and not brought in. They also make their own tortillas and they are the best in town. Their guacamole is thick and with the perfect amount of spice. We have been there so many times we have now gone through the entire menu. All of it is great. Our favorite is their combinations plates with tamales, tacos and enchiladas. They also have wonderful fish dishes. Their rice and beans are so tasty. Now none of this is health food, so leave your diet at the door. I would not suggest El Cholo to a vegan or vegetarian, but for everyone else it is amazing and super fun.

Went here just before the KISS gig as it is literally around the corner from the Staples Center!!! We were seated at the nacho table and got free nachos!!! They filled us up quite a lot so we ended up sharing a main course, to which we had fajitas. Trust me, the food is stunning and I wish we were hungrier!!! To all of my fellow UK readers, I have not had a Mexican like this in the UK...and have tried quite a few. This will blow you away. Highly recommended.

Salsa and Chips are the first give away. Salsa had no flavor and was watered down. We asked for something hotter and it was just hot, again no flavor. The chips were not any better. Stale. I ordered a margarita...received it in a coke glass. Then came our food. On a scale of 1-5, the food was a 3. Lacked flavor. For a Mexican restaurant, this one really does not meet the standards of real Mexican food. My thought is that it is in a good location, looks really nice walking in and sitting down. But that is about it.

Lovely staff - excellent and fast service. Food was extremely tasty and more than I could manage! Tucked away restaurant on Flower Street which is celebrating its centenary in 2023. The margueritas were lovely too!

This restaurant is great, the food is always on point. If you love Margaritas then you will love this place! It caters for big groups as well as couples.

The food was very good and the service was excellent. We took some friends from Japan there for their first taste of Mexican food. They loved it. Only downside was a screaming baby, but not the restaurants fault.

Yes, El Cholo has been around for ages but I don't get the hype. I wouldn't consider it to be authentic Mexican food because it has been too Americanized. One of the people in our party of five ordered a chili relleno and she was asked if she wanted it with or without the chili. Another ordered a beef enchilada and she received a cheese enchilada with ground beef spooned over the top of it. A beef taco had the hot sauce and cheese spread on the outside of the tortilla. I also found the food to be overpriced. On the positive side, the atmosphere and the service (by David) was excellent.

El Cholo was established a long time ago and it's easy to see why they are successful today. All the food was fantastic on our first visit so we brought other friends here for a second time. All the food was fantastic but I was especially loved the tortilla soup. Others thought the Caesar Salad, fajitas and nachos were great too.

While holding vigil in a waiting room at USC Medical, my family and I decided to order dinner from El Cholo downtown. I ordered the crab enchiladas, specifically, the non-dairy version. Upon pick-up and inspection, the orders appeared perfect, however, on returning to the hospital, I soon realized that the crab had been mixed with some type of cream, rendering them inedible. I called the restaurant, and my call was soon retirned by the manager Ricardo Avila. As I was unable to return for a new order, Ricardo sent a gift certificate covering our entire order! Satisfied, I ate the delicious black beans and rice that accompanied my enchillada. It is so refreshing to experience a restaurant that is so dedicated to true customer service.

We we’re looking forward to an outstanding Mexican meal at an historic restaurant, but that’s not what we got. The margaritas were good, but I ordered the crab meat enchiladas, and they simply weren’t a good dish. I wouldn’t order them again. My partner ordered a combination plate with a Chile relleno and a cheese enchilada. They simply didn’t measure up to what he has had at other restaurants. Finally, the service was below par. I specifically asked that the entree not come out until we had finished our appetizer course. Within five minutes the entree course was delivered. Bottom line: if you want good Mexican food and good service, look elsewhere.

This place is perfect if you want to have a mexican deal, the service is great and kind. The fresh atmosphere is great and according to prices is mid-range. Chicken Fajitas are very good.

This is my city...the City of Angels. I was raised on Mexican food. My father could not have built his company without the help of Hispanics; who he always gave credit for his success. Some of my best memories are around the holidays where we used to have large employee gatherings that included authentic Mexican food EVERYWHERE! I still dream of chicharrón -dang, I miss that (you can't imagine the heavenly flavor/smells of this fried pork), and countless tamales! Those and flan; my mouth waters just thinking about the creaminess! Anyway, sorry I digress, I long for true non-Americanized Mexican food in LA -I am sure it is here. Can someone share an address? That all said, I love El Cholo! I have been to several of their locations many times, and in my opinion the original on Western is THE one to frequent. The menu is 'dumbed down' for those unknowing tourist, but the atmosphere, the welcoming and hospitable staff, and the shockingly affordably prices, keeps this LA native coming back for more, and more. Is it authentic Mexican? (like a gringo would know!!!) Probably not, but it is a great night out with strong margarita's and food that will feed your inner Latin soul very happy! We will be back! ...again, and again.

Went to join local LA de LA club for monthly meeting here. Sunday, and not too busy????? Over 20 people in our group--ordered what I have for years, Huevos Rancheros. Brought beans and rice, 2 eggs over easy(no salsa ranchera and cheese on top, no tortilla) . Asked for manager-he comes says that is how we do it here(not in the past 4 years amigo!). Another guest had to ask and re-ask for hot coffee, hers was luke warm. Other fussing about the table---went to front to see manager. A very angry lady fussing at counter--she had guests at home, ordered food, on the phone, and paid, told come in 20 minutes will be ready. She was 20 minutes at the register waiting. Manager appears, say he will check--never returns. This long time neighborhood favorite in trouble obviously--too many good Mexican restaurants to come here again---

We went here on Halloween right before attending a game at Staples center, the food was great the margarita's were real tasty with the right balance of tequila and mix the chips were fresh and hot, great place to walk to from the staple center or anywhere in LA live

We were a party of ten on a Sunday night. The place was packed. We were seated quickly. Drink orders were taken and chips with salsa brought out. Dinner orders were taken next and quickly brought out. The food was absolutely the best I have ever tasted! Don't pass this place up.

I was expecting some great food from this legendary restaurant, but the meal was mediocre and so expensive. I had the lunch special chicken enchilada and it was awful - just a slab of meat rolled in a tortilla. And the margarita prices are outrageous. There are so many better Mexican food options in LA so I won't be back.

Still as good as I remembered more than 20 years ago. Green corn tamales are still amazing and their Coconut margarita was yummy too.

Excellent faittas and delicious margaritas. Authentic Mexican. Worth the drive. Affordable prices. Comfortable surroundings.

We were driving around when I noticed this place. I love places like this. Family owned and been in business for almost a century. The food was good, service was great and the atmosphere was amazing. Cheers to Mr. Utley and his wife, Shauna.

We went to the Original El Cholo 50 years ago many times during our USC days. So we decided to go back when celebrating 50 years since we met. It was a disappointment. Prices are high ($15.95 vs. $1.35 for a combo plate). Portions are smaller. Food quality is not close to what it used to be. Service was spotty (we waited 20 minutes after we were finished to get a check with no waiter in sight, and did not get water refills). Glad we came for nostalgic purposes but we won't be back. There are so many better Mexican restaurants in southern California.

Good long standing spot. I recommend this place if you love Mexican food. The service was great as well.

5pm on a weekend after Grammy Museum visit: The Old Mexican Hacienda, El Cholo, across the parking lot looked inviting. We were welcomed warmly & given several rounds of 'sample' tequila shots while waiting to be seated. When we were seated in a lovely garden patio with misters to ease the heat we all marveled at the lightning speed with which we were served. Talk about service with a smile and then some! The place was super busy but our appetisers, drinks and food were out in a flash! Wow" The margaritas were okay -and we did like the sweet corn tamale appetizer (if a bit too sweet) , but the $10 guacamole made tableside tasted kinda bland although we had all the condiments added -it was as if the avocados were not ripe. The rest of our food was just OK. All in all- I like the space- It's a nice "Old Mexico" respite in big city downtown. The friendly staff is terrific-the service was beyond great -but the food just didn't live up to the ambiance and it's not cheap.

We stopped here for lunch on way to USC campus earlier this year. We have found that lunch is less rushed then dinner on busy nights, so often come for lunch instead. Valet parking is still available for lunch, so that is not an issue. Food was well prepared and presented and our waiter was attentive, but not pushy. The portions are large, so we split a Burrito Durado and the table-side guacamole. By having the table side guacamole we can order it how we like it - very spicy! This restaurant has changed over time (I've eaten here since I was a child with my grandparents), but it has maintained a style that is cosy, comfortable, local, and very much still part of LA!

This is the one Mexican Restaurant I go to every time I am in LA - why? - Because in my opinion it is truly great! The staff the history of the restaurant and the location - very original!

I would not say that El Cholo's offers the best Mexican food in L.A., but the food is really good and it is a really fun dining experience. Great decor. Primo margaritas. And if you have a yen for something not on the menu, ask for it. There is a secret menu.

I always get the same thing, the shredded pork nachos and margaritas. Everything else I've tasted is delicious, but these are my favorites. Service is always great and super friendly. It isn't fancy or over-done, it doesn't even have to try, Old school and fantastic.

We visited the original El Cholo on vacation - and had a wonderful meal! Loved seeing all the history. LOVED seeing (and eating) dishes that had been on the menu since the 1920's.

We had a birthday dinner at the Western Ave location and it was good. Killed some time at the bar - but felt a bit hassled to move along by the waiter, despite our buying some $50 of drinks while waiting for our table. We were a large party of 12 and were seated next to the kitchen entrance which made it rather hectic. But the service once we were seated was good - and the food was great, no complaints there. Prices were reasonable. I had tacos al carbon which had plenty of meat to them and were hot and tasty. They nick you for $6 to valet park but worth it for the easy access.

This El Cholo is on Western Ave. in the heart of Korea Town, about 3 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles and near the Wiltern Theater and all sorts of great places to eat. This is by far the best of any food in this area and their Mexican food is the best in the Los Angeles area. This place has been around forever it seems and it is always great, it is always clean and it is always welcoming. Their food is so good. It is old style Mexican food. Anything you want they have. the place is so pretty and always clean. It has not been changed in a long time and there is just no need to change a thing, it is well maintained and spotless. All Covid measures are in place. You will feel safe there. They have a bar with a TV and I think they still have Happy Hour. We were there for dinner so I really can't speak to that. I can tell you that the people at the bar were clearly having a great time. The service here is the best. They take great care of you, check on you and you are never rushed. Some of the employees have been there for as long as 20 years. Our server heard me say to my grandson, no desert today--he had eaten a lot. The server brought him the Big Stick Popsicle. What a nice man. My grandson was over the moon. This is not on the menu anywhere. Our server was so sweet to my grandson, making sure he had his order right--my grandson is speech delayed. The bathrooms are clean and well kept. Everything is clean and well kept. The food is just the best. They make a killer guacamole and don't charge an arm and a leg for it. Their burritos are so good. My favorite item there is their Chimichangas. They are the best in town. You can get it as an appetizer or as a main menu. All of their fish dishes are wonderful. They make their own flour and corn tortillas and they come hot with butter on the side, just Oh My God. You will love this place. It is great for a date or just for family fun.

The location was fantastic to grab a bite before the game. The staff was friendly and very attentive to us. We had good food in a fun atmosphere and I would dine there anytime. Mexican style food is always good and they did not disappoint.

Recommended by a friend who went to college in Los Angeles, El Cholo, and particularly this original location, has been on my to do list for a very long time. And it turned out to be disappointing ordinary. The food was the sort of typical Mexican fare you get everywhere: tasty and plentiful, yes, but too cheesy, oozy and generic (salsa, guac, sour cream) tasting. The restaurant itself was nice and homely, and the service friendly and attentive, but I went for the food and the food was just okay.

El Cholo is by far my grandson's favorite traditional Spanish restaurant. The outside is beautiful and everything is so clean. The neon sign screams at you to come in for dinner or a drink--they have a great bar. Parking is valet and I think 7$ but there is sometimes parking on the street but mind the signs or a ticket you will have. Once inside the lobby is painted with welcoming colors and let's you know you are in a fine Mexican restaurant. There is always a host or hostess on the ready to get you seated. They take reservations, but if you go right at 4 pm, you won't need them. They can get crowded on the weekends. They deal with Covid by making sure you have your vax card, as required by law here, and everyone that works there has a mask on. The entire place is kept spotless. The tables and seats are cleaned after each visit. The food is amazing and a reasonable place for what I consider fine dinning. They have a huge menu and they have something for everyone. Even a vegan can get a great meal here. Their chips are always fresh and they have wonderful salsa. We love their burritos and all of their combination plates. It is all fresh and made to order. Their side dishes and appetizers are so good. Their guacamole is unmatched. Some go there for a pitcher of Margaritas and a bunch of appetizers. It is a great time. I am always with my grandson so no drinking, but we love the appetizers. The service is excellent and you will be well taken care of. Have fun.

My coworkers and I go here every time I travel to LA. It is one of our favorite places to eat. The food is excellent, I would consider it to be some of the bext Mexican food that I have eaten. I ordered the enchiladas (chicken and beef) and they were excellent

On recommendation we visited this restaurant, we found the staff to be very friendly and the food was yummy, it came piping hot and very tasty, my husband had the chilli and I had the prawn fajita really good. Would certainly visit again

Amazing mexican food in LA!!! I drink a Very good margaritas on The rocks with live performance of mexican music. I can't live to LA without go to this restourant

LA seems to have pretty low standards in restaurants. This place is an LA legend, but would be very average in Seattle or SF. Prices were a bit higher than such places in other cities. Perfectly okay food, but not all that special.

Craved proper Mexican food and ended up in El Cholo. Nice atmosphere, nothing fancy but all waiters attentive and genuinely friendly. It started of with crispy fresh warm tortilla chips with a great salsa with just the right amount of cilantro. We dug in and they made sure they kept the salsa AND the chips coming. We first ordered some tableside-made fresh Guacamole which was to die for. Already pretty stuffed we had some proper artery clogging chile rellenos and some sizzling beef & chicken fajitas all super tasty and in large quantities. After the very large meal came the last great surprise. The bill. For the quality of food I expected it to be much higher then it was. If I'm ever back in the neighborhood I'll make sure to visit again.

Outstanding restaurant. Friendly staff. Charming interior. Very homey. Table side guacamole was amazing. We split the chicken fajitas and they were some of the best fajitas we've ever had. Loved the flan. It's big enough for two and tastes like a fusion of flan and creme brûlée, and it has slivers of sopapilla which are both decorative and delicious. We plan to make it a tradition to come here every time we are in LA.

Came in for an early dinner (4pm) and the staff was friendly, quick, but knew when to leave us be. Food was excellent..steak fajitas were fabulous, and the guac was great too. Will be back!

We decided to go here since it is the original El Cholo. We have eaten at the El Cholo located near Staple Center and enjoyed it. This location wasn't all that great. I felt the food was comparable to El Torito or any other chain restaurant. Our waiter was busy with a large party so we felt forgot about during our visit.

My husband and I hadn't been to El Cholo in many years (maybe 20 or so). We grew up in Los Angeles and now live in the suburbs. I went there regularly as a kid. We were going to meet out of town visitors in Los Angeles for dinner the other night and my husband suggested El Cholo. First of all, the restaurant has changed in many ways. Years ago there was always a long wait for seating. When we went Wednesday night, we were seated immediately. The food is still good, but definitely not as delicious as it used to be. Maybe because they are less busy now, the service seemed less rushed. In that respect it was nice. We were able to hang out for a long time after eating dinner, talking and having margaritas. Another reviewer stated that there were no bathrooms when they went. I did use the restroom, and was surprised to see that it has been completely remodeled (still keeping the El Cholo charm).

El Cholo would not win any culinary awards. But, it is as good as one would expect a Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles to be. Food is good, margaritas are generous, and service is pleasant

We went there thanks to recommendations by fellow mexican friends. And they were damm right. The food is real mexican , the place is very mexican, and the people there are very mexican. We went there to eat two days in a row. Its very close to LA Convention Center, Staples Center, Grammy Museum and many other attractions .

They have a great happy hour and it is not overprices as compared to the places at LA Live. We like to go here before NBA games or concerts. They have the best taquitos and the prices are fair. The service is great and the margaritas are very good.

Was in town to visit my daughter. I had been to their other location. This location does not disappoint either. Solid traditional Mexican food with very good margaritas. Table side guac is really good as well. Had a little bit of a wait, but nothing too bad.

Oh my-what a menu and the best margaritas too! I loved the menu with descriptions of when the item was added. I opted for a vintage Chicken Quesadilla- and was delighted. So delighted that I enjoyed a margarita....and then another!

I've been going to El Cholo for many years and it was a favorite, however, after a recent visit, I was very disappointed. The margaritas are still awesome, but the food is mediocre at best. I tried a few things and nothing was a real palate pleaser. Its a shame because this is an iconic restaurant location. Will not be going back.

Great atmosphere!!!! Food is great depending on what you get !!! Drinks are so good!!! Great place for family reunions

This is the original El Cholo. Classic Cal-Mex for when you need a fix! Everything is good, but standouts include the original nachos (order jalapeños with them!), cheese enchiladas with the tastiest sauce ever, blue corn chicken enchiladas, and the rolled beef taco. And rocket fuel margaritas!! This particular El Cholo also has Corona Light on tap which is a nice touch on hot days.

We went to El Cholo for nostalgia sake, having gone there often 40 years ago. It has not changed much, and the memories were nice. However the world has changed and the menu is surprisingly limited. None the less the food is still good. Maybe having a narrow focus brings its own reward. My wife had chicken enchiladas with green sauce, and I had a tostada with chorizo. Both were good but the tostada was made like a salad - very fresh tasting, but with too much dressing. Since I am used to no dressing, or maybe salsa, this was a surprise, and a bit unwelcome. the guacamole was very fresh, but basically just avocado and the albondigas soup was great.. My wife's margarita was great. the service was very nice as well. If you wan ta look aback at the 30s LA, this could be the place, very comfortable atmosphere. If you want trendy or higher quality Mexican dishes, look elsewhere.

This place is a real piece of Los Angeles' Mexican-American history, as it is LA's oldest Mexican restaurant, so old that when it opened it was known as a "Spanish" restaurant. Its beautiful, homelike interior is a wonderful place to relax after a day of sightseeing or work. Since El Cholo is the birthplace of the grand tradition of nachos, you may wish to try those. Their fajitas are also flavorful and filling, and their cheese enchiladas and Annie's Early California enchiladas are both delicious vegetarian choices. If you consume alcohol, you must try a smooth, creamy coconut milk margarita -- it washes down spicy food perfectly. Reservations are accepted and recommended.

We have loved El Cholo for years. Now that we live 4 hours away it's truly a treat to go back when we visit LA. This time was no exception. The Margaritas are fantastic. I had a Cadillac Margarita and they serve it with a shooter of Grand Marnier on the side to add in yourself. Be sure to ask for the table side service of Guacamole. They bring everything you could want in your guacamole and make it in front of you from perfectly ripe avocados and additions of your choice. We included red onions, a little salsa, and tomatoes. Perfect. And of course their chips are warm and hard to put down. During the months of May - October El Cholo serves Green Corn Tamales. These are a huge favorite for those of us who are great fans and in the know. That is what I had for dinner and my husband had "A Taste of History." The prices are very reasonable. Speaking of history, El Cholo is family owned and been in LA since the 20's. The food is wonderful, ambiance beautiful, the staff very friendly. Do yourself a favor the next time you are in LA and go to El Cholo. I'm salivating and missing it right now. :)

Delicious Mexican food with a long history. Happy hour is a very limited, they should offer more selections of food and drink. Moderately priced.

Walking into this particular restaurant is like walking back in time. It has such a wonderful and historic atmosphere that you almost forget to order your meal. This restaurant opened in the early 1920's and you could spend hours looking at all of the black and white photographs that are within this establishment. As far as the food, prepare yourself for a delicious meal. The Staff is very friendly and you will enjoy the atmosphere during your time there. It is quite a "diamond in the rough" and you can not go wrong with eating here. Parking is plenty and make sure to grab some homemade guacamole like I showed in my picture below. Hope this helps. See you there! :)

My husband, stepdaughter and I stopped here for a quick dinner before a performance in the area and we were looking forward to eating here since we had been here many times several years ago. Unfortunately it has changed dramatically. Service was just awful with the waiter playing bartender as well as serving. The white wine was not drinkable, chips stale, quesadilla greasy with what tasted like American cheese and the ceviche tostada dull and limp. The little tacos were edible but just barely. The only good thing was the $4 draft negra modelo. Here's the worst part...no restrooms! You had to go out back in the dark to andy gumps!

My husband & I had lunch here during a weekday afternoon. We were seated promptly. I ordered the LA Margarita. It was really good. The food was also great! We will visit again.

We didn’t enjoy our meal here at all. Angry waiter who just smashed the food down on the table. I ordered a combination meal and the beef tasted weird. Later that night I was up for 6 hours vomiting. Avoid it .

This is the place for a wonderful margarita. There's something a little different from the typical recipe you get everywhere else. The food is very good and great service, too. Try the green tamale when it's in season.

We stumbled on this hidden gem while out walking. Celebrating its 100th year it is a fabulous Mexican restaurant. Shared a mixed platter and ceasar salad at lunch with their famous margriettas . While I actually had 2 margrietta....both great. Older traditional atmosphere and experienced server . Sounds like the ownership is very community driven and charitable by the 100 yr celebrations . We'll done.

El Cholo has been around since the early 1920's, and along the way the chef's have invented pretty much all post 1920's Mexican food. Reading the menu is like enjoying a great Museum, but better because you can eat what you read about. So many wonderful dishes and the Margaritas are tops.

We didn't have huge needs, but honestly this restaurant was the worst Mexican food I have had in few decades...and its in Los Angeles? The place was hopping the week after Christmas, but the wait staff seemed very undermanned. We got chips and salsa on the table and then were left for well over a half hour before making an order. The food took forever to come, the kids actually fell asleep at the table waiting. Something seemed off (maybe some wait staff did not show up??? the boss was out???). As for the food...it was really undistinguished. I had the ceviche tostadas and I couldn't even finish them. They were that bad. It took forever to get the bill and get out of there. And then the bill? Over $200 for 5 adults and 2 kids who hardly ate. I'd never go here again. Save yourself some time and give this place a skip.

Chad, from The Ambrose Hotel, asked us if we needed a ride anywhere as we were heading out of the hotel for dinner. He told us it was GREAT place but that it was a bit of walk. He offered to drive us there. We were not disappointed! Had a lovely meal on the patio. Our server was very helpful and attentive. DELICIOUS food!

Nice atmosphere and great food. Our waiter might not have been the most attentive, but the delicious food made up for his lack of keeping our glasses full. Portions were huge!

We had the margarita classics, guacamole, Santa Barbara Enchiladas and chicken enchiladas... all this after a long flight and arriving in L.A. for the first time.. We are in heaven!! Thank you Louis at the Sth Western Ave for being an amazing waiter, we're super happy with everything!

We went after a stressful day at the hospital and El Chollo made it all better. The food was delicious and the drinks soothed the savage beast. My new best friend

Been here since 1920's! A local favorite. Haven't been here in a while but I used to live in the area and I came often! Came this time for a retirement luncheon. A perfect place. Plenty of small or large banquet areas. Taquitos were on the table with a delicious guacamole along with chips. Had a combination plate with tamale, enchilada and taco with beans and rice. Delicious! If it's Mexican it's on the menu. Plenty of vale parking. No waiting for a table usually. Helpful servers. Alcohol is served.

El Cholo has been around for at least 40 years and there is no pretense and no hyperbole....just straight ahead great mexican food. A lot of history has transacted at these tables (or at least the original location). I can't eat the sweet green tamales often enough! If you never enjoyed a tamale you need to come here.

I have had several chances to eat here during my trips to this area. My most recent was with my girlfriend and her daughter. The food and service are always above average. We had the sampler plate and she had a margarita, which must have been good as I got no navigation help on the way home from sleepy. The only drawback I saw was the fact that they don't have their own parking lot anymore and you have to pay to park, either in the street or in a lot so that may add a little extra to the bill. If you are visiting anything in the Staples Center and like Mexican food don't miss this place.

El Cholo Restaurant is a long established Mexican eatery offering authentic and delicious cuisine. The festive atmosphere and friendly staff create a lively and welcoming dining experience. The menu features traditional Mexican dishes, including popular items like enchiladas and margaritas. the restaurant can get busy during peak hours, leading to longer wait times. Prices may be higher compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. It is a top choice for tasty Mexican fare.

This was my Me and my Husband's first choice pick. Am i glad we did. The restaurant had amazing food and drinks. We were given suggestions by the hotel staff at The Residence Inn LIVE and the restaurant didn't fail us at all! We would dine here again and again; actually was the best meal we had while in L.A. for the weekend.

The service was very good, the food was above average, but the best part of the visit was the ambiance.

When I called to place my order, the front desk had me on hold so long that I had to call back again for him to take my order. He told me all 3 orders would be ready in 20 mins. I arrived exactly 20 mins later and had to sit for another 20+ mins because he wouldn’t check to see if it was ready. Then when I got home (I live 5 mins away), all 3 dishes were cold and tasted horrible. This was my first visit to this place ever and I should’ve gone back to get a refund. And lastly, the online price for the same thing I called for over the phone was less than what they actually charged me for. Do not go here. It’s a rip off from the poor service, to the disgusting food, and down to the charge.

Good food, and drinks. Great Happy Hours!!!! Nice atmosphere. Great place for couples, families, friends, business, or solo!!! .

We had drinks while we were waiting to be seated. We were given the bill by someone who was not our drinks waitress and I paid it. Then, as we went to go to the table, I was accused by the drinks waitress of not paying. I told her repeatedly I already paid the bill. She refused to listen and threatened me. Unbelievable. Will never darken this establishment again. The food was also stale and bad.

El Cholo is a well established Mexican restaurant in the heart of LA. The decor is traditional old school with both indoor and faux outdoor patio dining. Some of the booths appeared small and the booth table tops low and cramped. We booked early Sunday lunch time and sat at a spacious Booth. The authentic display of LA Mex antique decor added to our enjoyment of deliciously prepared burritos. My cousin enjoyed the dish with the two semi-cooked eggs on top. I'm not into semi-cooked eggs on tortilla chips, but after tasting hers, I could be encouraged. The service was efficient, and value for money fair. There was only valet parking available $3. Minimum. Enjoyable.

El Cholo is an old favorite of mine and a firm establishment in LA. It's the type of place that hasn't changed for decades, and probably never will, at least in the foreseeable future. My favorite is the plain cheese only quesadilla, but they are actually best known for their tasty enchiladas. The house guac is truly creamy and amazing.

OK, it's as if Disney had been called in to design a Mexican restaurant, but the service and food are very good, and it is reasonably priced. Visited with a friend early evening mid-week. It's a big restaurant, but already reasonably busy so booking may be advisable. There are complimentary chips and salsa, the margaritas are good, and food is warming and generous. This isn't fine dining, but makes for a good evening with friends.

El Cholo is one of our reliable and preferred destinations. Great value. Great service. Many choices. There is a bottomless basket of chips and salsa. Guacamole is prepared fresh, to order, at the table. If you happen to visit between May and October, be sure to try the seasonal green corn tamales. Well worth the trip.

I was pleased to have found this very tasty place to eat in the middle of Korea Town. The wait staff were especially hospitable. They were very concerned that my needs were taken care of and that I didn't need anything else. I enjoyed this Mexican food, including the chips and salsa included with the meal.

If you're in the mood for good, home style Mexican food, with a warm, homey atmosphere, this is for you! A great place to join friends for an evening of great food and ample privacy to share great conversation. This is my "go to" place for a great meal. There is also a large bar and a few private rooms. The waiters are very nice and helpful, without hovering over you. Wonderful!

A few years back I took my family visiting from England and we all had great meals, it was great. Due to the last good experience, my came to visit again and a few days ago in June 2018, we went to El Cholo, and, it was the worse experience ever. The food was too greasy, you needed a magnifying glass to see the meat in the carnitas enchiladas, and barely noticeable in your mouth. The prices were very high for what we got. Del Taco would have been better. The service match the food...Terrible service. it was my worse experience ever and I am 77 years old. Will NEVER, ever go back again!

From the outside it doesn’t seem much but as soon as you open the door it’s like entering into a new dimension. The entire room is so cozy and the inside is surprisingly big, with a bar lounge & fire place. They gave free nachos with salsa that’s delicious & authentic. We’re not much into Mexican and wasn’t too sure what to order. We ended up with the Fish Taco, it came with rice & avocado guacamole. We also sampled the Tamale Pork. I wasn’t such a big fan but I didn’t hate it at all. The fruit margarita is a must try. For dessert they gave us free praline candies. The food is a little pricey but I don’t mind paying because of the ambience and freebies.

The atmosphere is great and the food is too. Margherita's not half bad either:-) The menu is fantastic and there is a real family ambience.

I loved this place as everything was piping hot and real tasty. Carnitas was my favorite and the chips were wonderful.

The atmosphere is lively and fun Food was great , very tasty and the service was good . Great Margaritas However the restaurant was soooo cold . We had to keep our coats and other customers did the same We did ask for AC to be turned off several times but this request wasnt granted !

This restaurant has a lot of history. It started in the 20s. And it is still family owned. We went there on the recommendation of the green corn tamales. They are only available between May and October. They were excellent and I also had a coconut margarita that was the best.

I came back to the area after 20 years. The food here is still great. Fun and festive environment. Service was good. Nice choices but not overwhelming. Margaritas are good with nice salt rim. They know how to do food and service right as they have been doing it for years. Lots of fun memories from here and coming back was not a disappointment.

If a restaurant has been around since 1923, you know it's good! This had to rank among some of the best Mexican food I have ever had! Beautiful decore and great service. Thought it was especially clever for the restaurant to give each patron a small bowl of salsa room avoid sharing germs. My taco salad had a small flat shell and the salad was built on top of the shell. Just delicious! The small candies the server brings with the check are delicious, melt in your mouth pecan pralines. Awesome!

Sometimes a place wears its age. El Cholo is one of those places. The booth was way in the back of the restaurant and though it was comfortable enough to feel like you were sitting on bleachers, I felt sort of cramped, especially facing the back wall. The artwork, if that is what they call it, showed various photos from yesteryear, interesting enough. The images were faded and the frames were dusty. The color of the walls did not make for an appetizing atmosphere. The service was pleasant and attentive, the food was good enough, its El Cholo after all, but in as much as this is a landmark restaurant, I just feel less is more. Its reputation may precede its overall quality. It might need a good deep cleaning and vibe up the dishes—like less mole sauce, smothering the whole plate of food is not necessary. I think the more genuine the public feels about the surroundings and food presentation, the higher the tips for the staff will be.

Going to El Cholo is a treat for me, since I don't live close to one. My favorite dish to order is the green corn tamale plate with black beans instead of retried beans. Two tamales come on the plate and I either share with my husband (and share a tostada as well) or take one home for another meal. While there, I usually purchase frozen tamales to enjoy later at home. They are only available during the summer months.

Loved valet parking, old fashion atmosphere and warm smiles, service may be a wait due to popular spot. Reward of the great dishes, Will go again.

Good dinner! Hubby enjoyed the corn tamales. I loved my rolled taco and cheese enchilada. Chips and salsa was great. Good service.....cute, historic place!

We had a group of nine people show up for dinner unannounced but were seated quickly and graciously. The food was typical Mexican cuisine but that was what we were looking for. I enjoyed chicken fajitas and we received good service. It was not authentic Mexican food like "street tacos" that are so prevalent in Los Angeles but for typical American / Mexican food it was more Mexican than American. The portions were generous and we all left satisfied for a reasonable price.

I wanted good mexican when I visited Los Angeles. This place was a very large and beautiful decorated restaurant and the food was fantastic, so were the drinks. The food was not overly salty as mexican food can sometimes be. I had fish tacos. The fresh guacamole was my favorite.

This has been a favourite LA haunt and we visit upon our returns to LA. We enjoy the character of the place as well as the food, this time being unable to make up our mind we had the sampling plate with margaritas, really enjoyable. The staff are very accommodating, my friend ordered a most complex range of food but they obligingly produced it!

When I say it's a classic it's because the restaurant has been around since 1927. The ambience of this restaurant is fantastic, it is old but looks new and is clean. As you walk around the restaurant you see lots of memories throughout the years. Our server had been working at El Cholo for 33 years! For a family of six; with 2 children eating from the kids menu, 1 appetizer and no alcohol our bill came out to $119. For Mexican food it certainly is not cheap but it was an enjoyable lunch out. I ordered the huevos rancheros which were just okay. My eggs were overcooked with the whites being too crispy and difficult to chew. I personally have had better huevos rancheros. The chips and Salsa and guacamole appetizer are great picks. Keep in mind parking is $3.50 cash for valet.

Have been there two times because the food was so delicious there. Waiters are very friendly and the interior makes you feel like being somewhere in Mexico. If you are lucky they will serve the taco chips in mexican national colors.

Squeezed into the bar and found a table recently vacated, it was cleaned within 3 minutes, chips & salsa and bar service immediately . In a rush, we ordered an appetizer platter that seemed to be thrown together & reheated. It arrived within 4 minutes. Bartender was totally blasted, rocking the scene under mass pressure, made it worth the crowd of Kings fans.

If you are anywhere near this restaurant and you like Mexican Food. It is a must. I saw our former Mayor eating there and one the best writer for the Los Angeles Times. It is great. You won't be sorry.

In 1980, my dad took me on an impromptu trip to Washington DC. Twenty years later, my husband, son and I visited many of the same restaurants I’d enjoyed with my dad, all of which are still in business today. Such longevity seems to be a rarity in Los Angeles, where restaurants come and go according to the latest food craze. Dating back to 1927, El Cholo is one of those restaurants which has survived the passage of time. In my age group, living in L.A. and eating at El Cholo were simply a given, the way going to Disneyland or adding the article “the” before a freeway number are a way of life. We didn’t go to El Cholo because we were necessarily looking for authentic Mexican cuisine. We went there in search of the comforts of tamales, chiles rellenos, enchiladas, tacos, tostadas, carne asada, and chile colorado. They were reliable, welcoming and comfortable. And they were good. Located at the fringe of Koreatown in Los Angeles, the restaurant is good-sized with an Old California Spanish feel, tiled floors, rustic ceiling and historic photos throughout—the kind of restaurant you might expect to find in close proximity to a mission. These days El Cholo charges for valet parking (it was $5.00 a few weeks ago) in their very busy lots. I suppose there’s street parking if you don’t mind walking a few blocks; it was late when we went and we didn’t feel like looking. Service was a mixed bag. We were quoted a 30 minute wait time when we arrived eight-thirtyish and we were turned loose on Vermont with a vibrating pager. When the pager began to dance, we reported to the front desk where a young lady scooped up menus, turned, and wordlessly disappeared into the dining room to her left. Were we expected to follow? Darned if I knew. I started after her, then thought the better of it. Maybe she’d realize we’d stayed behind and would come back and get us… Only she didn’t come back. So, I turned to the host for guidance. No, he assured me, she was checking to see if the table was ready. Aha! Mystery unraveled. Now, normally when a restaurant pages you to come to the front it’s a sign that the table IS ready, but I guess their system was different. And sure enough, eventually the missing hostess reappeared on the opposite site of the restaurant, now all smiles and charm. Our server was a pleasant though basically humorless young man who performed his duties adequately albeit without much personality. I always wonder about people like that; I figure if you’re going to be doing a job for a number of hours, you’d probably want the experience to be as pleasant as possible. Mind you, I wasn’t expecting the poor guy to tap dance his way to our table with our Margaritas, but we just couldn’t get him to loosen up. Parking attendants were similarly no-nonsense, losing a few points for not bothering to open my door. Call me old-fashioned, but when you’re forking out five dollars plus tip, it would be nice if they’d do something other than standing beside the driver, waiting for him to rummage through his wallet. One of these days I’m tempted to sing “I’m the one with the money” and wave my purse when they bring back the car, just so see if they’ll be more attentive. But I still enjoyed my dinner. The enchilada sauce was exactly what I was needing: the comforting smells and tastes from my childhood. Amply provided for both the enchilada and tamal (pork), I also enjoyed mixing some of the sauce with my rice. Though I’m normally not one to order tamales in restaurants (gristly or dry are my usual complaints) my pork tamal was a delight: feather light masa encasing a generous portion of beautifully lean meat. Next time I’ll try the famed green corn tamal (note to self that we’d better plan a return engagement sometime before October, after which said tamales are not served.) Beans were good, rice in my opinion only so-so. My husband’s carne asada was nicely cooked and the pico de gallo and guacamole satisfying. Minor negatives included chips which didn’t taste as fresh as they might and an enchilada which for my taste buds was a tad too cheesy (will opt for another filling next time I get one). Portions are very generous (even the margarita!) Truly, there is a quality of reassurance about dining at El Cholo. Within those walls over the span of more than eight decades, thousands of people have been served. Special occasions have been celebrated, people have laughed and perhaps cried, candles have been lit and blown out. That the restaurant still thrives and continues on in the same tradition is a credit to good management and a consistent kitchen. The world outside the walls has changed so much, yet when you’re inside El Cholo it could be just as easily 1947 as 2014. Don’t go there looking to change what it is, what’s made it successful; go there to experience what was and still is—a successful bite of Los Angeles history. It’s actually pretty tasty.

Located right in the middle of downtown Los Angeles is El Cholo Restaurant purported to be the oldest restaurant in California. The atmosphere is delightful and the walls are lined with historic pictures of the Restaurant and family who started it in earlier days. The menu offered the typical Mexican food that would be expected. The service was a little slow but the food was great. I ordered the green corn chilie tamales that have been served since the restaurant's inception. They were tasty but my husband's choice that featured filet mignon was exceptional. This is a busy restaurant so expect to wait awhile for your table. Oh, they also have mandatory valet service for $5 as parking is extremely limited. We visited with my 3 year old grandson. The waiter was very attentive to him even offering him a ice cream that was hidden under a linen napkin and described as a kitty.

Food was nice, atmosphere was good, the server was too slow and forgot most of things we ordered. I had to ask two or three times to get beer or water.

Cant go wrong here, large Margheritas and as all else as you expect from a good Cali Mexican!!! Tacos, Burritos, slow cooked meats, the refined beans. Plethera of chips and fresh soft corn or flour tortillas. Lovely service.

We enjoyed eating here. El Cholo is the oldest Mexican restaurant in LA. And some of the menu items date back to when it opened. But, that tells you something, right? When El Cholo opened Americans didn't really eat Mexican food like they do now. So, the menu reflects a sort of an Americanization of Mexican food. So, it's like authentic American Mexican food, not authentic Mexican food exactly. But, it's a fun place with a lot of history and the food is okay. The service is also good. They can also accommodate a large party.
Great Place!
This was a great place tucked away in downtown LA! Amongst high-rises, trendy bars/restaurants, and new buildings being built is this unassuming tex-mex / spanish building! The staff here was great, and I was seated right away despite it being busy (it helped I was a party of 1). I was seated in a great open air plaza area; the indoor seating opened up to a patio area in the center of the building, which was a fantastic, pleasant and inviting set-up. The menu had decent variety, but appeared to be legitimate ethnic food. The margarita and my food were very good....and, surprisingly, the prices were reasonable....even if it wasn't in downtown LA, I was pleasantly surprised with my check! I would certainly not hesitate to return here.
