Good Time Had By All

By RicR |

The food is amazing. Everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. The margaritas are also very good. It is a family owned business, so everything is prepared with pride. The tortillas are prepared fresh right in the middle of the restaurant. It gets crowded on the weekends. There is a live band on Friday and Saturdays nights. Great place to eat and dance it off. Cold Food

By Flavor Mosaic |

I was anticipating returning to El Jarro as I remember it being very good many years ago. Unfortunately this visit was very disappointing. It took a long time to get seated, and a long time to get a waiter to take our order. Once we got the food, the queso was cold, not warm, cold, as were the beans and rice. The beef fajita meat was warm but not sizzling like one would expect. The flour tortillas were the best aspect of the dinner. They were hot and delicious. However, El Jarro got an extra star because the waiter did remove the cost of the queso from our bill. However, it won’t be enough for us to come back. There are too many other good Mexican restaurants to choose from. I hope El Jarro can improve to their former glory days.

Crowded and noisy

By 1clifford |

This was a recommendation for us so we tried it. The food was ample but spicy. The margarita was the worst I ever had. They had a live music but disco music in a Mexican restaurant seemed a bit odd to me. Prices were a bit high. The restaurant was crowded and tables were very close to one another.

Taco bell is better

By TonyBoca |

After hearing some family members rave about the place, we decided to try it. As you enter the dining area you encounter the stench of an old beer. Unfortunately for me the best part of the meal was the salsa and chips. I'm beginning to think the palate of my family members is beginning to dry up in the warm Texas weather. I asked the waiter to describe the snapper orzo mango plate. He said it was similar to a snapper Vera Cruz. How far off base he was. There were chunks of rosemary throughout the plate that you could choke on it. What was rosemary doing on a snapper Vera cruz plate? The orzo was was swimming in the soupy sauce. Needless to say it was the worst snapper I have ever had. I even had a twist tie mixed in with some shredded tortilla that came with the civiche. The jazz music was at best amateur. The bathroom smelled of two day old urine. I would rank this place below,,. I don't even know. This was truly the worst meal I have ever had.

Does not disappoint

The people are friendly, the music and dancing are fine, the food is not disappointing, and the service is good.

No More Stir of Echoes

By OmniEpicurean |

The dining experience is all in the eye of the beholder. It's a complex activity of multiple sensory inputs rolled into one rather than just the taste of the food or the quality of service. Those that have been coming here (like I have) for over 30 years and know what to expect find the place nostalgic and comfortable in the dimly lit dining room with rickety straw woven chairs, strings of pinpoint party lights and the slap of those simple and scrumptious Maria's tortillas being freshly made. Diners that are new to the place see it as a restaurant past it's prime in need of renovation and improvements to the menu. When you have patronized a particular eatery for a good length of time, you begin to know the menu, any quirks with service versus time of day, when it is most crowded, and have picked out your favorites eschewing those that do not meet your standards for taste or seasoning. That is my El Jarro dining dossier to a "T". As such, I can tell you that the well priced $8.00 weekly lunch buffet (that's a bargain) though it has bland cheese enchiladas does have decent fajitas and build-your-own tacos. I will also tell you that my favorite is the beef anticucho for an appetizer or Chad's Delite for the plate. You can order the various other plates all you want, but try these mouth watering, perfectly grilled, medallions of beef and I'll bet those loud and long gripes about the food become echoes that fade to stir no more (+for colder days the chicken tortilla soup is an honorable mention+).

Long time family favorite

By Kay2929 |

This place never fails me. The service is very professional. The food is freshly made and excellent. Even though the inside is a little tired it still has a wonderful Mexican feel. It's our favorite Mexican go to when we visit San Antonio.

Still Going Strong

By bobemac |

El Jarro has been in San Antonio since the 1970s. It used to be far North of the city in a suburban area, now that area is really busy and always slammed with traffic. We haven't been here in a decade, but the food is just as tasty as we remembered, albeit mas caro. The chilli con queso is thick and spicy with a great taste. Their tasty salsa is made fresh daily and comes with home made tortilla chips that are thick and crunchy. We had the the chicken fajitas for two. There is a lot of very good marinated meat with tons of onions and peppers. The fixings are a delicious guacamole, pico de gallo, sliced tomatoes and house made corn and flour tortillas. The Ranchero beans were outstanding and the large quantity of Spanish rice was just perfect. Joey was our server, and he was very efficient and friendly. Except for some price increases, and that's to be expected, El Jarro's food quality has not changed over the years. This is the place for delicious Tex/Mex food in North Central SA.

Dinner surprisr

Great tex mex but so many other great dishes too. The red snapper w capers unbelievable. Chicken Marsala who would have imagined that it would be so good

My favorite Tex Mex restaurant

I've been here many times, almost every time I visit San Antonio. The location is great, the atmosphere is great, the staff is great, and the food is the best.

Wonderful enchiladas suizes and a Cuban-style flan!

By Ralph D Wilson II |

My wife and I were out running errands and remembered this restaurant from the late 1990's and we were delighted to discover that it is still open and serving wonderful food. Since we were there on a Wednesday, we really lucked out because their Wednesday Weekday Special is (chicken) Enchiladas Suizes, which is one of my favorites if it is done right and it WAS! Fortunately, we had decided from the start to save half of the main course to take home, so we had room left over for desert. My wife had their Tres Leches cake and I had their flan. Both were excellent; however, I have to warn you that the flan is a Cuban-style flan that is not your normal, custard-like flan with caramel sauce. The Cuban-style flan is more like a cheese cake but it was really delicious.

Sunday Brunch!

By stunna54 |

Great selection at the Sunday brunch, omlettes, migas, fresh tortillas and plenty of lunch options as well beef tacos, enchiladas, chicken fajitas as well.....just tremendous food and service...if you wanna live dangerous try the Pancho Villa salsa...

Authentic Tex Mex

By Pat320 |

This place is awesome! If you're looking for authentic Tex Mex, this is the one to visit. The food and service is wonderful. You can get everything from delicious enchiladas, tacos, kids meals or even pasta with cilantro cream sauce. Someone is always there making fresh, flour tortillas by hand! Chips and salsa comes with everything, even with the $8 lunch buffet; which is full of tasty grilled chicken, ground beef, refried beans, soup, all the fixings and fresh strawberries. If you want hotter salsa, just ask. It's incredible and very spicy. Margaritas are top-notch, made with fresh lime juice with numerous choices in price and strength. They have top-shelf and beyond. Worth every penny. Service is amazing. Ask for anything and it's there in an instant. Couldn't ask for better.

ALWAYS....GREAT, SAN ANTONIO, MEXICAN FOOD!!!

By stoli47 |

I have been going to "El Jarro's" for many years. With all of the wonderful Mexican food restaurants in San Antonio..... it remains my favorite!! GREAT, Tex-Mex, as well as specialty dishes from "Mexico Norte!!" As far as I am concerned..... bar none.... the best margaritas, on the rocks, in town!! Live music on Fridays, and Saturdays!! ALWAYS busy!! GREAT atmosphere and service!! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!

Great atmosphere, excellent food

By John W |

My wife and I hit this place about once a month. We had then cater my big 60 and 65 birthday parties. There there corn chowder soup is wonderful as are the margaritas. They have been in business a long time and have excellent service. Located at Bitters road and US 281.

Late lunch

By christmaskit |

Food is good except for the chips and salsa. The chips are thick and not crispy and the salsa is watery. The waiter was snooty and acted like he was doing us a favor by stopping by our table. Never offered any beverage other than the water which went dry long before any refill came. They were not that busy at 3pm on a Sat. The table across from us had to go get their own water pitcher.

Pretty good nachos

By Susieangelgirl16 |

I haven’t been to this restaurant for years but it’s still around. It was fairly busy at lunch and the food was still good. They had a buffet but we just had nachos and margaritas. The buffet looked good also.

What a way to start a Sunday!

By Barbara W |

Excellent brunch! Plentiful. Sabroso! Great variety! Terrific omlettes! Would highly recommend and would take visitors to San Antonio. White tablecloths with affordable pricing.

Average Big Business in San Antonio

By zepper50 |

Located off 281 in a strip center. Parking at 6;00 pm on a Friday very difficult. El Jarro very busy with lots of people waiting. Normal extensive Tex-Mex menu. Service slow and manic due to very busy eatery filled with people. Flavors average.

Disappointed

By Shelly S |

We stopped in to El Jarro on Saturday night for a quick margarita and nachos before going to see a movie. We seated ourselves at a high table in the bar area, and, upon asking, were told that a waiter would serve us. The service was very slow, and the "top shelf margaritas" we ordered were terrible. The nachos were slow to arrive, but tasty. We waited for our check but our waiter was nowhere to be found. We had told him that we were on a tight time schedule. A lady came by to clear our plates, and we told her the margaritas were bad. She said something about talking to someone about it but never returned. We were charged over $39 for two un-drinkable margaritas and a small plate of individual nachos. We won't be returning.

Door dash

By Angie B |

We had lunch sent via door dash. It was very good. I would enjoy this food at the restaurant made fresh. It is difficult to door dash food that may get soggy... but that was my fault.

Great Caterers

By Sakeit2me |

We used El Jarro as the caterer for our wedding and they were amazing! Not only were they were affordable and easy to work with, but at the wedding everyone raved about how delicious the food was. Also, they were very helpful with the set-up before the wedding, even helping to set-up parts of the wedding that I did not book through them. I cannot say enough good things about El Jarro's catering service, highly recommended.

Great variety, a bit pricey.

By Bellie |

Really enjoy the ambiance of this well known Mexican restaurant. The prices though are a little high. The chunky tomato hot sauce is a bit bland and the chips are just ok. I had the seafood ceviche which is only available on weekends. Was a nice sized portion and good flavor. More shrimp than fish though. We shared the flaming queso flameado with some grilled onions and poblano peppers. Very good with their homemade flour tortillas. The meat antichucho skewer had a good flavor but was tough. They had a Sunday buffet which looked good with plenty of choices.

South San Antonio High School Alumni Luncheon

By ALAMOEAGLES |

We had a wonderful time at El Jarro De Arturo yesterday. This underrated restaurant has an excellent and creative kitchen serving all types of Mexican and TexMex favorites. Steaks and seafood complete the menu. There is always a presentation of different foods for various occasion such as Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day and other special dates. Since 1975, the eatery has been heralded as one of the finest restaurants of its kind in San Antonio. The business has been profiled in Bon Appetit magazine and has received other awards . Visit this business whenever you can. You will not be dissappointed!

Don’t order the Cabrito

By Xray |

If you are familiar with Cabrito, you will not want to order what is listed in the menu. The local is nice and service is proper.

Skip downtown restaurants

By Jefferson7 |

Had the carne asada and it was so tender. Comes with one enchilada, go with the verde. Service was great and homemade tortillas are to die for. This place gets packed on the weekends.

This place is killer...

By BRHoover |

Not sure how to describe this "Mexican" restaurant. The only place to compare is Hugo's in Houston. In a word,El Jarro is outstanding. It is soooo nice in many respects. The service is impeccable. The menu is excellent. And the make a mean margarita. I had "Susie's Surprise" - carnita tacos very well presented with a mango avocado sauce. The Arturo Margarita was excellent. I can't complain about anything in this Northside SAN Antonio establishment but can recommend this as a go to restaurant if you are anyplace close to San Antonio. Excellent in all respects.

Not your typical Mexican restaurant

By BigJohnMike |

If you think this is a Tex Mex restaurant, you don't know Tex Mex. Yes, there are traditional Tex Mex items on the menu so not to disappoint the Yankees who winter down here, but the menu is a product of a very accomplished chef and his wife. The salmon is the best I've had anywhere. The lamb chops, outstanding. The beef makes the chop houses nervous. The staff have movie star good looks and they aim to please. Just go.

It’s the quality and taste of food why we come back

By E L P |

My first time here was in 2003. We try to eat here on the weekend for lunch or brunch. When we eat during the week at lunch it is always busy with what seems like locals. For dinner, make a reservation. Don’t let the stars fool you, I think the local clientele are not the type to rate it for several reasons. Often we eat the cheese enchiladas and I think they are the best in the city due to the meat chili or sauce. It’s not gravy. I also like the dinner tenderloin with chipotle with a cheese enchiladas. Of the 10 things we eat normally there is seldom any disappointment, portions are good and the flavor is clean and on point. It’s not a new fancy place, it’s what I call old school tex mex from the 80s or 90s. Solid. Tasty. Quality. Familiar. And that is why it’s busy …. Even if it is not number uno in SATX. When you know, you know and avoid rating it to keep people away. Try to, for the food.

Not what it used to be.

By Chuck R |

El Jarro used to be one of my top 5 mexican restaurants in San Antonio. I has now fallen off my top list. The last couple of times I have eaten there, the food just wasn't as savory as I remember it. I used to crave the margaritas as well, but after having sampled more sophisticated mixologist around town, they too are tasting dated. My most recent visit was for lunch. We all ordered the buffet and I was very disappointed in the very limited buffet offering as well as the flavor. I was not expecting the spread you get at a high end brunch at a fine hotel, but it was limited and the flavor was slightly above that delivered by taco bell. I will give it another chance soon, but if things stay the same, I will be moving on.

One of my favorite mexican restaurants in SA

By MKM78163 |

I love this place! Food is always awesome, service is great, atmosphere is wonderful. We go here quite often for dinner.

Delicious food and great service!

By lindaZ5181SC |

We've enjoyed ElJarro for many years and hope they stay around for many more. Everything on the menu is good; the tortillas and Margaritas are to die for. This is not one of those hole in the wall Tex Mex places. White tablecloths, ambient lighting, and tasteful decor make it a great place to take clients or a date. Live music on Saturday makes it even more enjoyable.

Happy hour

By Ray02rodriguez |

In order to get the happy hour prices you have to sit in the bar area. They gave us a bistro table that was 32inches by 32 inches. The chairs were about 40 inches wide. There were 4 of us at this small table. Drinks were delicious as well as the appetizers. There was not enough room for the glasses of water with our drinks. It was very uncomfortable trying to eat and manage the food. The service was very slow and we were not at the busiest time of the day. It was 3:00 in the afternoon. There was only 2 other tables with customers. Even thought the food was good we will not be back for a while. Maybe if it is only my wife and I.

Permanently Off My List

By Deb S |

Unfortunately, I can't review the food at El Jarro because we walked out before we were seated. This is why: Shortly before 6pm, I walked into the restaurant while my husband was parking the car. I walked to the podium to check in, where a hostess, a woman close to my age (that is, not young), was busy fussing with her purse. She finally shoved it into an area near the podium and I thought, "well, now I can check in." Wrong. She then began unfurling a roll of tape and began taping things. No eye contact. Okay. I'm invisible tonight. At that moment, my husband walked in and asked if we were waiting to be seated. The hostess, barely glancing our way, said that she guessed she could take our names. We did, and sat down opposite her station near another couple. A waiter approached this other couple, apparently knowing them, and said he had a table for two in the bar area which they apparently declined. We, however, were not asked. Several minutes later another waiter approached the hostess at the podium and looked at the list, noting that there were two parties of two waiting. He mentioned something about having a table for four and at that moment a family of four walked in. The waiter immediately grabbed four menus and ushered them to the table. At this point, my husband approached the podium and asked the hostess why this family had been seated immediately. From our view, there was a two-top near the bar and a four-top that we apparently were not eligible to dine at. "That was a mistake," she told my husband. No apologies, no estimate of when we would be seated (apparently, it was dependent upon who walked in the door next), just a very obvious lie. As for the waiter, he likely preferred a four-top (and the larger tip he believed he would receive). That did it for me. I looked at my husband and said, "we're outta here." In my approaching dotage, I, the paying customer, no longer am tolerant of treatment like this. El Jarro is a good restaurant and close to where we live but it is by far not the only decent Mexican restaurant in the area. I have reviewed many restaurants on the TripAdvisor site and those who have read my reviews know I am generally positive, even-handed, and fair. I am not a malcontent and I am not prone to hyperbole. So for me to get this fired up takes some pretty outrageous behavior. Note to the hostess: Your behavior was dismissive and unprofessional. As the first person a customer encounters, you are the representative of your employer. Note to the owner: Customers now have a way to enlighten future customers. It's called TripAdvisor. I look at TripAdvisor before going to a restaurant I haven't dined at before. If I read a review like this, I'd certainly take notice. Indifferent, bad, unprofessional staff costs you customers and reputation. It just cost you this customer.

authentic Mexican food and more

The best margaritas in town... you better just have one or call Uber for a ride home. the food is fabulous with the tuna and snapper dishes being an excellent choice. The carne asada is tender and mouth watering. YUM

The Essence of Average

By Lauren B |

So my friend and I tried this place out for two reasons....sometimes, Mexican food is the only thing that sounds edible, and sometimes, you don't want to brave rush hour traffic in the land of San Antonio: a place where blinkers are sad, neglected, dying breeds. But wait, El Jarro De Arturo is right down the road?!? Hurray! And there's no wait?!? I repeat, Hurray! Chapter 1: A Sensory Experience To be frank, that honeymoon period ended at the point we sat down. I was a bit taken aback by the prominent bathroom-y smell. I mean, this was forgivable...maybe they just made a mistake when picking out air fresheners. But then, why do they need to "freshen" delicious Mexican food laced air? Chapter 2: "Yeah, I don't eat this kind of food." Here's tip 1 for waiters; when a patron asks you what your favorite thing on the menu is, make something up! Or at the very least, do not say, "I don't really know, I don't eat this kind of food." Ummm, what? I was prepared to dislike the food simply because my waiter basically told me that, the food isn't good enough to eat during shift. And he probably doesn't even have to pay for it. Chapter 3: First Contact The food was...pretty good. I mean, it was edible. It didn't make me sick. But it also didn't make me sing! It must be very difficult to compete in San Antonio in the realms of BBQ and Mexican, so maybe this is unjust. But that being said, this was very average. That's about all I have to say. I had the puffy chicken tacos (mainly because this combination of words piqued a certain amount of curiosity in me), and my friend got steak fajita tacos that were not really fajita-y AT ALL. But she said they were decent. Would I recommend this place? Sure, if you're really hungry for average Mexican food.

Great Mexican food

By Ashley R |

This is our second trip here while visiting San Antonio the margaritas are delicious, I got the steak fajitas and my husband got the enchiladas which were very good. The salsa and caso dip was really good. Would recommend.

Average Mexican

By Kandice B |

Honestly came to this restaurant because of the band that was playing there. I ordered from the appetizer menu...botana plate. I liked it and had left overs for the next day. But overall the atmosphere was great and they had a band. Really good music!

We love EL JARRO!

By Happy09bear |

The owners Arturo and Sandy are usually on site and have a great Manager John who knows how to run a restaurant efficiently. With Covid they have been able to survive because of their excellent food and fantastic Margaritas! The staff is is very seasoned, friendly and fun. Gama, Carlos, Perro, Joey, Jerry to name a few. We went there on Tuesday and it was so good to be back. We noticed a LOT of take home food, tells you how good they are. Thank you EL JARRO DE ARTURO!!!

Love their margaritas and carnitas!

By Diane R |

We love their menu but our favorite dinner choice is the carnitas for two. The house margarita on the rocks is the best in San Antonio! They offer a wonderful buffet on the week-ends! This is a local favorite!

The best

By Gretchen Ruth |

El Jarro is our go-to Mexican restaurant (in fact, the ONLY Mexican restaurant that my husband will go to). The restaurant has a sophisticated and varied menu and the well-trained waitstaff does a great job. You can actually taste the tequila in the margaritas (that's a good thing). We're lucky to live close to El Jarro de Arturo.

We continue to try for sentimental reasons.

By joe |

Service was good, food was good. The food is hot. Just feel like there too many other very good options in San Antonio.

Great food and margaritas!

By zeffen333 |

The food here is always excellent. The shishkabob was tremendous and unexpected at a Mexican restaurant. On weekends they have live music and a dance floor that can be lots of fun!

After a long flight..

By fvm54 |

Arriving in San Antonio to visit extended family, after traveling many hours from Australia, the margaritas and the food was most enjoyable and refreshing, certainly kept us going for longer after such a long journey.

Wonderful Mexican Food

By Barb125 |

The meals here are super Texas Mexican food. The plates with enchiladas, tacos, beans, rice and guacamole are delicious. Add the hot corn tortillas for "bread", chips and salsa and you couldn't ask for anything better.

A great Mexican Restaurant. Try the Weekday buffet

By gibbswp |

El Jarro has become our favorite Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio. Everything we have tried has been delicious. We always go there on the weekends, but discovered that from Monday to Friday that they have a fabulous all you can eat buffet, with a good selection from enchiladas to tacos to fajitas and more. All with handmade flour tortillas. And at a great price, too. The restaurant is just in a strip mall, so from the outside it is not much, but it is very nice inside and the food is well worth stopping for.

Great place to celebrate & enjoy good food!

By dga120 |

El Jarro has consistently been a great place for family gatherings...wonderful food and always friendly service...this is definitely a place to visit often!!

Great Food

By Juan A |

Great food selection and plenty of it. We visited the weekend after Christmas after reading prior reviews and they all lived up to the expectations.

Large Portions

By Barb125 |

The Mexican food is very good. The portions are big and a lot of variety. The Sunday buffet is also very good.

Neighborhood Gem

By Helon55 |

The food is consistently good, the staff is attentive, and the on-the-rocks margaritas are - bar none - the best in the city: fresh, and not super-sweet. There is live music on the weekends and a small dance floor. We love this place!

Fantastic! Highly recommend!

By Jennifer C |

This is a traditional style Mexican restaurant serving more traditional or authentic Mexican food with outstanding drinks, service, ambiance and entertainment. The carnitas and beef tenderloin are delicious. We went on Saturday night and the live music was so good and fun they had half the restaurant up dancing. What a fun night! If you want to be close to the music make a reservation and ask to sit in the back. I highly recommend this place. Oh, and did I mention that they have a big nice bar area? Perfect for happy hour, dining or just waiting for your table! I would give this 6 stars if I could.

Great atmosphere

By Annmarie |

We went on a Saturday night for our Granddaughter’s birthday dinner. Seated quickly. Our waiter was Jerry, extremely polite and helpful. Our granddaughter has dietary restrictions and the waiter was patient and helpful. All nine of us had great meals! Service was quick with quality food! Nice atmosphere. Will return.

Great Food

By thetattooedlady |

We stopped for lunch before a flight out of San Antonio airport by chance, and found a restaurant that we will definitely frequent whenever we’re in San Antonio. The food was super yummy, especially the soup, and it was very affordable.

Fine Mexican & TEXMEX Dining

By DonnyTheOracle |

One of the BEST I don't want many to know about only because I don't want to wait long to be seated. But, seriously some of the mexican meals I've had in the Alamo City have been served here. Professional staff will ensure you are taken care of. If you are looking for fast food go elsewhere. However, if you're looking to relax and dine knowing you'll be pleased when the check comes then you have arrived.

El Jarro Mexican Food

By Laverne W |

We have eaten here numerous times, and have taken food out as well. The food is always fantastic in taste and appeal. Monday thru Friday they have a buffet that is excellent. Their soup is very good. I would recommend this place to anyone that likes Tex Mex or Mexican dishes, as the quality and presentation has always been first class. It's one of our, if not most favorite, places to eat in San Antonio

Great lunch buffet

By Joseph F |

We have been coming for so many years. The food is always good and the service is always excellent! We love coming here!

Always delightful

By Bill C |

I love this restaurant. We have been eating at El Jarro for over 30 years and are never disappointed. They have an extensive menu of unique items as well as traditional Tex-Mex dishes. Their lunch buffet is always delicious and abundant. The margaritas are the best around. We go back again and again.

Top Notch Server

By L H |

We had not been here in ions but bought a Groupon and went with family. What a treat. Our server was awesome. He was prompt, patient, efficient, friendly and got all the orders correct. The food was plentiful and very good flavor. The menu has a large variety of choices in different price ranges. The groupon worked fine but could not be used for buffet or lunch specials. So had to be used on rest of menu with some higher prices. Not sure how much the buffet was but the lunch specials are priced reasonably. The decor is nice and restaurant large. Surprised it wasn't terribly noisy considering it was almost full. We arrived just as they opened so no problem getting seated. Would love to go here again when in the area as this restaurant has been at this location for many, many years. Keep up the good food and service.

Wedding dinner rehearsal - bad choice

By calipackerfan |

We came to this restaurant for a wedding rehearsal dinner; the menu was pre selected of a cheese enchilada plate and then steak and chicken fajitas served family style. Adults were $21.99 and children 10 AND under were $13.95. Food was nothing special, I could get that food anywhere in San Antonio and not pay that much. The servers were clearing plates from the table while we were still eating off of them - including the groom! They were trying to rush us out because they ‘had a lot of people waiting for these tables’. First off, when you’re making reservations for nearly 30 people, don’t expect us to be in and out in one hour. Second, I paid for your overpriced food, I’ll sit and eat it as long as it takes me. Finally, the server was arguing with me over my 10 year old daughter when the contract clearly said 10 AND under - that includes 10 year olds and I was not the only check they screwed up. 😡 they charged 25% gratuity - I’ve never seen a restaurant charge that much - I’ve seen 15%, 18% and even 20%. Overall very poor experience and I will not be going back.

The Best Salsa

By Beth R |

We visited this restaurant during brunch. They had a buffet that was really good with many options to choose from including breakfast dishes. The top shelf margarita was fantastic as well as the salsa. It was really fresh and tasty. Service was awesome.

Authentic Mexican cuisine on the Northside

By Johnnie D |

I have been eating here for years and I still keep coming back. El Jarro is similar to a restaurant in Mexico in feel and food. They have authentic Mexican food, a little Tex-Mex and a few surprises on their menu. They are located in the center of a strip center, but don't let that keep you from going. The Chicken Enchiladas Suizas (Chicken Enchiladas in a white wine sauce) are rich & creamy and one of my favorite meals here. The Sunday brunch buffet is very popular among locals, so go early or expect to wait. Good drinks and they have live entertainment & dancing on Friday and Saturdays.

Bad Service

By Linda N |

The service was TERRIBLE. The appetizer was delivered with the meal. We ordered family style and NEVER received plates. We all ate off of small plates already on the table. The waiter was inattentive and had a condescending attitude. Obviously, they only cater to their regular clientele. We were VERY disappointed.

Third rate

By Bill C |

Brought the wife there, thinking was suppose to be good Mexican, it wasn't! Total Gringo!! Bunch of Old White People from Alamo Heights go there and thats who they cater too! There are so many better Mexican food restaurants in San Antonio than this place! The bartenders will ignore you if you are one of the "Regulars" and the waiter will only show up when he is done with the rich old White couple next to you! The food was mediocre at best! Strongly suggest you spend your money somewhere else! I live in San Antonio and know better!

Couldn't Get Enough

By PfredIII |

I went to El Jarro De Arturo for dinner one evening as my hotel was only a few miles away. I had difficulty in deciding what to have. I was dying for some classic Mexican fare as coming from the East, I was in withdrawal for this cuisine. I had enchiladas. One green and one mole, both chicken filled. They were outstanding with a side of rice and beans..delicious!! The margarita was also fantastic, but I needed a DD if I wanted to have that second one I was pining for! The service was a little slow, but not an issue for I was not in a rush. I went back on my way out of town a couple of days later and had the mole enchiladas again as the ole was too good to pass up. My service on my second trip was responsive and attentive. This isn't the cheapest Mexican food I've ever had, but it was worth it. This is one of those deceptive restaurants located in a corner of a strip mall. Don't be deceived, its outspend and some of the best places Ive visited have been in strip malls! I can highly recommend El Jarro De Arturo.

considered one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in San Antonio

By WillisBayTrading |

We were there on a Sunday brunch day but chose to eat off the menu. It was very interesting, the restaurant was packed, the buffet line was busy, everyone seemed to be having a good time. We were in a group of 6 friends and family but we found the lunch to not be up to Mexican food par. Spinach enchiladas; no flavor at all, chalupas small with little chicken, shrimp freitas BIG AND EXCELLENT. So strange. Even the margaritas were off and had a strange taste.

Plenty of Food

By Barb125 |

The servings are very large. The food is average Mexican food. The service is great. I would go back.

Dinner and a show!

By Daniel H |

Live music on Fridays and Saturdays make for a very festive outing! Great variety of delicious offerings - the shishkebobs are a great choice: juicy tender chunks of beef, succulent shrimp and tender chicken grilled to perfection with tasty veggies is one of my favorite dishes. The parrillada de carnitas (tender chunks of spicy pork) is another standout! Don't forget the margaritas (as if.....)!

Mixed bag ...

By Deb S |

The last time I reviewed El Jarro I skewered it despite not having eaten there. This time it was not my choice -- we were there with a group (8 of us). I was curious about how the evening would go, especially when it began with the same cranky hostess. I don't care if she's the owner, the grandmother of the owner, or the Queen of the Rodeo. Don't put that surly face at the front of your restaurant! The results of the evening are mixed. Mostly, the food was very good. My chicken enchiladas verde with corn and avocado were delicious and served hot, however the rice was stuck together in globs. Not especially appetizing. Another dinner was served barely warm -- good luck summoning our waiter (or any waiter) to have it reheated. Mostly, everyone agreed that the food was good. Service was poor and not because the restaurant was busy. I'd originally ordered a sangria but it was cloyingly sweet (I'd asked the waiter if it was sweet, he replied "not really") so my husband drank it (he likes sweet) and I ordered a margarita. It was very good, but the time it took to reorder and receive it was, shall we say, quite lengthy. As in it finally came with dinner. Which took forever. My husband noted on the restaurant's website that it boasts a SA Readers' Choice award -- that dates to 2004. I don't know if this is a typographical error; I suspect not. I think perhaps it's an indication that El Jarro is not just resting on but deeply entrenched in its laurels. I reiterate my first review: There are many excellent Tex-Mex, Mexican, Southwestern, etc. restaurants in SA and I see no reason to go back to El Jarro despite its proximity to our home. Good food and much better service are, well, everywhere.

Favorite Mexican Restaurant!

By RhondaHTrip |

I take first-time guests here knowing that the service will be excellent, the food delicious and atmosphere perfect for catching up with friends over an unhurried meal. The lunch buffet during the week is excellent, with many great Mexican dishes.

Poor service

By Ellen L |

This restaurant has been around for many years and many people love it. We tried it today after not coming there for years and we won't be back. They have a large menu and the food is fine, but not great. The booths have lumpy, uncomfortable seats. But the worst thing is the service. They were not busy but we rarely saw our waiter. When he did stop by he deemed distracted, always looking elsewhere. We won't be back.

Gret foos, great service

By FiveDivers |

Eat here. Great Mexican food. Daily buffet is a steal. George's salad is my favorite. Everything made fresh.

Large dining groups...STAY HOME!

By Travelplans4me |

We recently tried El Jarro's de Arturo for the first time. We went with friends, total of 14 of us. Most of our friends had been there before and raved about it. We were told this place takes Tex-Mex food to a whole another level. Our dinner entrees were good. And friends margaritas were GREAT! But the service, now that's a different story! The waiter seemed to be trying to take care of too many tables and seemed very hurried. You would think management would assign us 2 waiters or a more experienced waiter. We had to wait for everything and it was difficult to get the waiter's attention. Our friend who had organized this, had to get up and get us the menus! After waiter took our orders, he came with chips and salsa but NO water for us who did not order drinks. I must say this is a first in all my years of eating out at restaurants that food was brought out at different times. Wouldn't you know my husband's entree came out last when the majority of us were halfway through our meals. I'm not sure what bothers me more, the fact that we had to pay for poor service or that management never made an attempt to apologize for the LONG wait. If you're planning to dine with a large group you may want to reconsider!

Always fantastic!

By SEMPER F |

We have been eating here since we were introduced to El Jarro 30 years ago. Very nice atmosphere, great food, impeccable service, strong Margaritas! Would rate it as our favorite non-river walk place in San Antonio. Very convenient to the Airport, located on the 281 access road at Bitters.

NIGHTMARE DINING

By Craig L |

I will never go back to this place called a restaurant! Waiter added their own tip and we went and spoke to manager/owner and she questioned my family and didn't want to pay us back! Bad Service and Scammers!

Authentic Mexican Food

By Cindy G |

Wonderful place for Mexican food! Margaritas are the best! Service is friendly. Location is easy to find.

horrific

By Susan E |

I just had the worst restaurant experience of my life at el Jaro de arturo. Def dont recommend going back the smells(clorox and stinky feet), wait staff(pushy impatient loud), food(microwaved and flavorless) and management(with alot of ego) were all horrific. I used to love the place but they don't seem concerned with their own performance..1 course 2 ppl took 2 hrs and then the waiter said i should have told him i didnt like the food (i had and he had ignored me) The manager argued and said their food was good even though my rice was hard and dry and my enchiladas were raw with chip salsa on top no echilada sauce. Ive dined internationally my whole life and never had such a terrible experience.

Stunningly good Mexican food and very close to the airport

By john w |

If you are hungry for Mexican food and are in the neighborhood of the airport this is an easy way to taste what San Antonio has to offer. Tender cooked beef, Rice and beans done right and enchiladas you will talk about long into the future. The Tiki Travel Planner's tasty tidbit of food trivia here is the "Queso Flameado". A killer start to your meal that is shared with everyone at the table. Call and get a reservation if you can as it is very popular.

The Best Enchilada in Town

By Ron D |

El Jarro has the best enchilada's in all of San Antonio, in our opinion. They are full of (beef, cheese, chicken, etc.), that you may have in mind. Service is excellent, buffet for lunch, entertainment in the evening. Fabulous margaritas!!!

Truly one of our favorites. Maybe not the best in town anymore but always good.

By joe |

Have been coming here for years. Now only one time a year when we are back in town. Some of it is just nostalgia but we have many fond memories. The enchiladas and the soups are great!

Lunch with Dad

By beth s |

All I can say is "what a find" From the amazing Salsa and chips to the absolutely delicious Soup on the buffet. The rice and beans were even the best I've had.Dad and I had the buffet ....everything was so delicious.Really great simple food done so well! Thanks can't wait to go back!

Friday night date night

By Bsuttie |

For 30 years Friday night has been our historically Mexican night out for food. Being full-time travelers, this means we have sampled Mexican food all across the country. This place is very close to our sisters house, and she recommended it. We were very pleasantly surprised, although it was jam packed , We got seated pretty quickly, the service was almost instantaneous, and the food was absolutely excellent. I am not usually a fan of Mole sauce, because it is usually too sweet, but the Mole sauce on the cheese enchiladas was about the best we've ever had! The top shelf margarita was excellent!. For that matter everything we sampled was great. Only suggestion, chop up that tomato you garnish the guacamole with and stir it in. PS the live music was really nice, though we like mariachi bands, this band is doing some stuff that was just fun. we will return!

Finally a Great Place to Dance!

By Sharon B |

Friends told us that since we like to dance that we should go to El Jarro's Mexican food restaurant on Saturday nights here in San Antonio. My husband retired last Feb. so we finally made a reservation and went. The first Sat. of each month the Court Jesters play at 8:00 P.M. which is a 7 piece live band plus some female singers for some songs. They played the songs we love from the 50's-70's. That's our kind of music! The Mexican food is good and the margarita drinks are good and strong! I only needed one to last the evening. The other Sat. nights have other bands but we will try to be regulars now on the first Sat. of each month. Be sure you make a reservation for dinner about 7:15 a week or two in advance if you can and you'll still have to wait but it's worth it!

First Visit = Last Visit

By HappyPenny |

El Jarro de Arturo has an excellent reputation, but I was disappointed when I ate there. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, the atmosphere is very fun and festive, and our waiter did an excellent job. But despite all these pluses, the food is average at best. The first thing that we noticed was that the complimentary tortilla chips were tough and stale. Salsa was okay, but the chips were just awful. And things got worse from there. I ordered a simple cheese enchilada plate, thinking it would be hard for a San Antonio restaurant to screw up enchiladas. But El Jarro found a way. The cheese did not taste fresh, and the enchiladas were smothered in a tomato-based sauce - as if someone had poured a can of tomato paste over the tortillas. Disgusting. And the rice and beans were bland and flavorless. I was only able to eat one enchilada before I gave up and pushed my plate away. It's a shame, really, because El Jarro has a lovely appearance and a very nice party vibe. If you're looking for good Mexican food, I suggest you go elsewhere. Life is too short to eat bad enchiladas.

Must go to

By CORNEA1 |

We fly in from Florida every year and drive from the airport right to the restaurant and love it. We eat there three times in 5 days.

Good Food long waits

By Jill V |

Great enchiladas and margaritas. Great menu selections the service is friendly but expect long waits to get in especially on the weekends.

SUPERB UPSCALE MEXICAN CUISINE

By searcher42 |

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the US. The Chile con Queso is the best around and Maria's Tortillas have no peer. The quality of food and the service are excellent. Go early because the restaurant is always crowded.

It has really gone downhill

By travelinjep |

We used to love to go here and would go about once a week. We enjoyed the good food and drinks, including margaritas and sangria. The "greeting" staff have always been rather surly, but we overlooked that bc the food and service were good. Now, however, the service is TERRIBLE. The last couple of times we have been, our server was never to be seen again after our order, and then we could not get a server's attention to even order last time. We were so disgusted that we left before ordering. It seems they have lost some of their really good longtime servers and don't seem concerned about the terrible service when we have pointed out the problems. We won't be going again anytime soon.

Always good food and service

By RedRaiderMike |

Good food, good service, and reasonable prices since 1980. No degradation in quality or service in 30 years. Way to go Arthur and Sandy!!

A Must Visit!

By Cocorea12 |

If you come to San Antonio you have to get to El Jarro. It's only a few minutes from downtown and very easy to get to. Once you are there you will enjoy some of the very best food the Alamo City has to offer. The shrimp tacos are PERFECT. Pair them with a Top Shelf Margarita and you are guaranteed a wonderful experience.

Old Style But Good

By AirstreamR |

Located at the southwest corner of Hwy 281 and Bitters Rd., El Jarro is the typical Mexican restaurant that has been in business for a long time, and aspects are getting a little "long in the tooth". The interior is dark, the furniture shows the wear of many years, and in some respects it is like an old family home......a bunch of glasses stacked over here, other things stacked over there. I went yesterday with several colleagues, and my only real "complaint" is that my saucer plate of chopped lettuce and a scoop of guacamole was $5.50, which to me is usurious. The others cleaned their plates at an average cost of $12 each, so the food is generally good. This wasn't my first visit, and I will return someday because it is convenient to those I was with. But, there are others that are better.

Just dinner

By HiranCabrera |

Queso flameado was great! Fresh made corn and flour tortillas! Highly recommend it! Great atmosphere. Didn't have drinks but from what I saw there were many kinds of drinks being made like margaritas to beer to shots. Nice place settings. Very clean and service was excellent! Give it a 5 stars!

Ai Caramba!

By Trampus01 |

Great service, in fact some of the best we came across during our 2 weeks in the States. The drinks were good value and the marguerites fantastic, the meat for our fajitas was tender and plentiful, so why am I feeling just a little disappointed, despite the fabulous company we had?? Our fajita dishes came sizzling to the table and the meat was beautiful. Unfortunately, maybe it's just an English thing, but some vegetables in the mix would have made all the difference. Some bell peppers, chills, anything to add a little colour and texture to the food would have made all of our dishes a little bit better. Don't get me wrong, I liked the place, I enjoyed the meal, our waiter was fantastic, I just left feeling a little bit disappointed and frustrated, It could be amazing with just a few little details taken care of. Maybe it's just me.

Family Sunday Brunch

By Barb125 |

We had a big crowd for brunch with several out of town guests. The buffet was a big hit and everyone had something they liked. The service was great and we never felt rushed to finish and leave. The food was excellent. We previously ate dinner there and the food was delicious. The enchiladas and tacos were very fresh and delicious.

Family Owned and Operated with Attention to Detail

By TexasJane09 |

Our favorite "go to" Mexican restaurant in San Antonio, so much so that it was our first stop on the way home from the airport when we returned from Europe and our son's first stop when he comes home to visit from NYC. This family works hard at their craft, is hands on and proud of their results. There is nothing I have had here that I would not order again, even their non-traditional dishes. That having been said, their Sunday Brunch is great, especially when you want a Brunch with choices of both traditional Mexican food and brunch items. The Arturo margarita on the rocks is the BEST but beware, they can sneak up on you. In a city with many choices, this is Numero Uno!!!

Extremely disappointed

By doctorfungus |

We are long term regulars for years -- frequently enjoying the sangria margaritas and authentic menu choices. Yes the front management is as surly as ever but our last two visits have been unacceptable. Forgotten orders, limited confused service. Tonight 'patio closed' ? Seated at booth with no service and waiter turning to non-responsive non-concerned manager to see if he could assign a waiter to our table. Guess there may be some unknown management troubles but we won't be back to see.... Lots of other choices. Would not recommend.

Not Impressed At All...

By jbsjp |

On my business trip to San Antonio I was recommended this restaurant by work friends, let's just say it's one of the worse recommendations for a restaurant I have ever had. Upon walking into the restaurant, instead of having to smell delicious food that would wet my food appetite, we smelt what seemed to be a combination of lot's of air fresheners and puke :( They had a lunch buffet, which some of my friends proceeded to eat, the taste of the food itself I can't comment, but they didn't like it. They thought it was bland. I ordered a chicken tortilla soup which was delicious, as well as a side salad which had stale rotten lettuce in it. I would say the highlight was the salsa, it was fresh and spicy, though for a lunch party of 5 we were only given two small bowls, so we had to keep re-ordering which was a pain in itself. Would I come back here again, I think not, I would rather give some other SA restaurants a try instead!

Great Experience

By Deb B |

I have not been to El Jarro in years, but The Court Jesters were playing and a group of friends were going. When I arrived at 6:30, the place was slammed! We had reservations but still had a wait for our table. The hostess, one of the owners, was really scrambling to get people seated. Our party of 6 was seated and we had two additional people show up. That was handled efficiently with extra chairs and place settings. I figured we would never see our food or it would be awful. Was I ever wrong! Our server Luis was amazing. He took our orders, food came out of the kitchen hot and tasty, and he kept our drink orders flowing. Kudos to both him and the kitchen staff for pulling this all off. I'm so happy to get reacquainted with this San Antonio institution.

I don't think I'll be back

By Qness47 |

This place has average Mexican food. Nothing out of the ordinary. They don't serve breakfast but do offer huevos rancheros. They serve brunch on Sunday's (you will have to call to get times). When I walked in it smelled like dirty mop water which was off putting since the restaurant is nice. The chips and salsa were not that good. Chips tasted stale and salsa had chunks of tomatoes. Food was good. I had the chalupas and they were good, normal. My sister had the enchiladas and they tasted like enchiladas. They do make their own tortillas and they taste were good- homemade. Service was good but then again there was only about 5 tables. Cost for 3 people $30 Overall I won't come back.

Excellent experience

By eloucks |

Across the board FANTASTIC experience. Great food, pleasant service, extra clean. I don't give five stars often but these guys deserve it.

Tastes Like Good Home Cooking

By ColoradoTexas |

In the last 3 weeks, we have eaten both lunch and a late dinner at El Jarro De Arturo's. Their lunch buffet was open and we chose to sample it. We were fairly late, but the staff made sure the items on the buffet were fresh and plentiful. The price was definitely reasonable. We had eaten dinner (late) the previous week - choosing from an extensive menu. Again, we felt that the food met our expectations (and we really like Mexican food). Again, the price was reasonable for the amount of food we received. The serving staff were attentive, but not too much so.

Best Food In San Antonio!

By HungryJohnnyBoy |

I have had a long lasting love relationship with El Jarro De Arturo for more than 15 years. The menu selection gives a wide variety of Mexican style foods. From standard selection of enchiladas, fajitas and guacamole to more sophisticated experiences of Rolled Salmon with flash fried spinach, grilled Tuna Anticuchos to my all time favorite, Chipotle Tenderloin with an Arturo Premium Margarita on the rocks. Live Music and dancing on weekends and classic spanish guitar on Thursdays (call to confirm music). Additionally, the Sunday Breakfast Buffet is not to be missed. Reservations Recommended! Take it from HungryJohnnyBoy, you will not be disappointed!

Outstanding Sunday Brunch Buffet and Service

By Gwinginit |

We were part of a party of five that arrived early for the reservation, We were seated immediately and served chips, tasty salsa and blended margarita and fresh strawberry daiquiri both were outstanding. We ate off of the menu and the rest of our party had the buffet. The food was hot fresh and very tasty the waiter accommodated every request with a big smile and very timely. We will return. Just Outstanding.

My first place to eat when arriving in San Antonio

By Chadswick |

I have travelled to SA for many years and always take new people to El Jarro for a meal and have never received any negative feedback for the food. The freshness and tortillas are the best and the food is always very tasteful. Will continue to make this my choice for Mexican food.

Yummy Carnitas

By Beth C |

If you like Carnitas and you like a little spice, then make sure you order Susie's Surprise. The tacos are wonderful, large chunks of Carnitas in a spicy sauce with a mango salsa and guacamole on the side to bring down the heat a little. My husband ordered something else, but ate one of my 3 tacos, because I was so full and it was so yummy!!!!

Good quality food and drink

By john s |

We were just two business associates look for good Mexican food; we found it! I had been to El Jarro several years ago and found it to be quite good. I was not disappointed upon my return. Extensive menu made our choices difficult but our waiter helped us make our very good choices. Good margaritas, too.

Birthday Dinner

By BigTex1947 |

Had the cheese enchiladas and listened to the band. Great food and service. They only have a band on weekends. Best time to go is 7pm.

Authentic Mexican Food

By Tabetha78216 |

Great food. Great atmosphere. Very friendly waitstaff. Go there for all special occasions. Good food, good atmosphere. A wonderful place to meet friends and family.

Too Expensive for the quality

By ker1994 |

The food is good here, but it is too pricey for what you get. The margaritas were $10 each and they tasted like cleaning fluid. The restaurant had a strange odor, which did not help the situation. The service was just so-so. I would not recommend this restaurant to tourists or locals.

Try the sopapillas!!!

By johneric76 |

We visited this place for a quick lunch before a day of shopping. We were seated promptly. The service was great. The restaurant was not very packed for the time of day that we visited. All in all, we had a pleasant experience. We will be back and would recommend it to friends and family.

Better than Tex-Mex!

By thehappywayfarer |

Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen in San Antonio but El Jarro is a fine dining alternative to the many generic rice and bean dives. The chicken enchiladas are great and the chips tasted homemade. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and made some great recommendations. We will definitely return.

smelly & average food

By abs723 |

The ONLY things good about this place are their margarita's (on the rocks)! They are So potent, one and done!! They taste great and sure to give you an amazing buzz! Not too sweet and not too limey. Other than that is always smells like dirty dish towels inside, the salsa & queso aren't very good. The food is Decent, not terrible but not great. I can not justifying spending $10+ on any plate there, the food is not $10+ plate worthy.... the service is always terrible. Las Palapas food is SOOO much better & cheaper. So if you want a good buzz go for a margarita on the rocks!

Pay attention here....

By AZMedicalStudent |

This place was touted as a MUST SEE while in San Antonio, however my experience made me wish I had not gone at all. My glass had food floating/stuck to the bottom inside. I asked for a new drink and got the same exact glass back with more soda. Not sure if the waiter understood the problem/English??? My order was cheese enchiladas and you could tell my plate had been over-heated in a microwave because the plate was unbearably hot with the center of my food ice cold. The beans were dry and my rice was tough. Upon paying my bill (which you must do on your own like Denny's), the "manager" was at the counter trying to balance his books. I waited for 10 minutes before he finally grunted and snapped my total at me. He took my cash and I asked for a receipt- bad move.....he acted insulted and scribbled a "receipt" on a scrap paper on dropped it on the desk. Eye contact???? NOPE! Ask me how my food was???? NOPE! As I left, there were more people coming in. I casually warned them to not eat there and they turned around and left. Choice is yours but I wouldn't even send my mother in law to eat there!

some of the best in San Antonio

By luvmy32000 |

If you are really looking for the traditional "tex mex", this place has it. great margarita's, and live music on some weekend nights. This restaurant has made a name for itself.

Great margaritas

By SMB52 |

This restaurant has been around a long time and has a loyal following. It is located in the corner of a strip mall. The food is actually very good. The prices might be a bit high for the Tex Mex. If your wallet can afford it, get the fish. My favorite dish is Chads Light. It has a couple of chicken nachos and 3 kabobs.

Great food and friendly waitstaff

By James F |

We had a party of seven, but we were seated immediately. The waiter answered all the questions we had about their large selection of dishes. We would go back there again.

Great Upscale Mexican Food

By searcher42 |

The service is excellent and the food is delicious. It is a great combination of bar and restaurant. Arturo's margarita is the best margarita in town. Maria's tortillas, the poblano corn soup, and the fajitas bear special mention. Do not miss this dining experience.

Two thumbs up

By water baby g |

Neighborhood place that has it all -- bar, restaurant and live music on the weekend. I had the snapper in a caper butter sauce and it was excellent! Family had enchiladas divorciadas, alhambres and they were great. Two thumbs up. Would definitely recommend it!

Disappointed

By GLEX_DFW |

I have been to many places around the world. My parents live here in SA and said that this was a good Mexican restaurant. To bad about this place. Salsa was good, chips are a fail. Chilireeno had way to much cheese and breading was not great. This place gave me diarrhea. Haven't had that in years. Unfortunately will never return.

Sweetheart Valentine Dinner

By Salatina52 |

Bought 2 Sweetheart Valentine Dinners for evening of Feb 14 @ $112 couple. Dinner was "exquisite"! Drinks, appetizer, main course & dessert. The place had a live band providing sweetheart music during the event advertised from 5:30pm-11:30am. Well, at 9:50 the band begins packing-up and leaves! Leaving all of us with no entertainment. The only catch I should warn you about is the price of drinks. My bill soared after a few! That was discouraging. Enjoyed the food, enjoyed the music. Won't return because of drink prices & fact that band left way earlier than they should have.

Still our favorite

By AyLulu |

I've been reading reviews that complain a lot about service, and to be honest, service is not always topnotch. We've been going to this restaurant for some 30+ years. We love the margaritas in particular and the food is usually very good but we stay with the same every time. That we've learned works better for us. Music is available Fri. and Sat. nights and usually a lot fun and funk! About the service, though, years ago we would walk in, be escorted during prime time to a table in the main room where the music was, and as we sat down, our margaritas would come to our table without us even having to order. Now, that was service. Our favorite waiter retired some years back, and the service attention overall has suffered -- not just because he's gone but because some of the newer ones seem badly trained. Maybe the owners need to do some remodeling, revamping. Every place needs a renewal now and then. Just don't change the margaritas.

Best Mexican Food in SA

By Pkwptx1 |

This is our favorite Mexican food restaurant in San Antonio. It never disappoints and the food is always tasty. It is TexMex which we enjoy frequently. Everything is good but I can especially recommend the enchiladas, fajitas and the tortillas which are made on premises. Value is excellent.

Tex Mex food. Tex Mex is not Mexican Food!

By TheJedi72 |

I came to this restaurant since I was staying at JW Marriot TPC Resort. I saw that the reviews gave it a green light. I'll do the same: green light to eat here...but don't expect amazing food. Anyone who says this is the best mexican food they have tasted...I must disagree. El Jarro is Tex Mex food....which is a little different than genuine Mexican food. The restaurant was easy to find. I did like the setting...a little dim...colorful. They sat us next to the kitchen so it was noisy. We were also under the a/c vent so it was cold for my 3 1/2 year old. As walked by the bar, it stunk like rotten mixed drinks or dirty floor. I ordered the fish tacos. They were a little dry. The chipotle mayo helped. My wife ordered the fajita skirt and chicken fajita platter. It was a good serving but the fajitas were also a little dry. She did say the ranchero beans were good. I ate black beans and they were good too. The biggest disappointment was that I ordered a Tortilla Soup. That was NOT a tortilla soup. What they brought me was a chicken and vegetables soup. There was no white melted cheese on top of the soup. They added queso blanco to it...the type of white cheese you put on tacos al pastor. (I ate at the Grismill in Gurene TX and they had amazing tortilla soup!) Another downer was that I asked the waiter what he recommended because it was my first time there. He couldn't name a plate. He said everything was good. I was just in the mood for fish tacos and thats what I ordered. The price was fair. It's okay to eat there. But honestly, the fajitas are way better at Taco Cabana. Sorry, Arturo. I feel bad dissing this place. I would go back but I really rather not. Then again, I am from the border, by the sea and I thought I was going to get authentic mexican food...as some reviews stated. Try it for yourself. If i am not mistaken, they have been in business a long time. Buen provecho.

Appetizers and Margaritas

By Alicia C |

Went for meal, but had the lamb appetizer with margaritas. It was wonderful, i highly recommend that if you don't want a big meal. Great atmosphere--go there to meet up with a "new" friend.

Excellent Tex Mex!

By Joel P |

The location was surprising (next to a Party City on the way to the airport), but the quality of food was exceptional. The service was also great, and the pricing and portions were great. Highly recommended.

Great Food and Margaritas

Impressive Menu and Service

By ALAMOEAGLES |

Wifey and I have recently moved to San Antonio from Houston. We visited El Jarro de Arturo last Saturday night and had an outstanding dining experience. We have tried several restaurants in San Antonio over the years. This has got to be one of the best restaurants in River City. The menu is varied with a variety of Mexican and TexMex selections plus steaks and great seafood. The salad was great with gorgonzola cheese and a smooth house made vinaegrette. We each had a fantastic halibut very well presented and very delicious. This is not an ordinary Mexican or TexMex restaurant by any means. The chef and crew know what they are doing. Ruben was an excellent waiter and knew how to properly serve guests. The business is obviously very well managed. We have tried hundreds of restaurants in Houston and we firmly believe El Jarro de Arturo is one of the better restaurants in San Antonio.

Great Place for Early Afternoon and Evening

By Patrick R |

A bit out of the way but well worth the visit. Very, very good Tex Mex and a comfortable atmosphere (especially after the lunch rush and before the evening festivities). Fun in the evening with the same great food, drinks and entertainment. Come with your dancing shoes!

First time in a year!!

By joe |

Food was very good. Hot, fast, and tasty. Service exemplary. Fresh, traditional, hot Tex-Mex!!! With so many choices in SA it is hard to recommend above the others, but for sentimental reasons, still one of our favorites.

Average food. Decent service.

By Omar R |

My wife and I came here for lunch. We were seated promptly. Our waiter was ok but not necessarily friendly. My wife ordered the Swiss Enchilada and she seeme satisfied with her lunch. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas flautas. However, my flautas were made with "pulled" chicken, but tasted about average. The restaurant is poorly lit and with the low ceiling it makes the restaurant look very dark. I will be trying a different restaurant on my next trip to San Antonio.

Great food and Outstanding Service

By Karl A |

It had been many years since we had eaten at El Jarro De Arturo, but after the last visit it will become more of a destination for us on future trips to San Antonio. First of all the service was great. Our waiter was Oscar and he was excellent. He was very knowledgeable of the wine offerings and was friendly and entertaining. The food is authentic Mexican food. I had never tried fish or shrimp tacos, but theirs are excellent. We also noticed how quiet the restaurant was even though it was packed with people on a Saturday evening.

Weekends at El Jarro

Great food, drinks and live music! How can you go wrong? This place has a lively group of regulars on Friday nights! All come for the great cocktails or sangria and the band. The food is very good as well as the service.

Original Tex-Mex and Family Owned

By Kegmeister |

I've lived in the area since 2006 and have visited this restaurant several times. What I love about this place is the people who allow me to feel a part of them when I am there. They may not remember my name, but they will remember a face. The food is very good and over the years I've been with them I've never had anything but a good culinary experience. If you're interested in adding a bit of music to your dining experience, check them out on Friday's around 7pm. A bit late for supper, but it's a great way to end the day.

A good north side SA TexMex restaurant

We meet friends here for dinner once a month and occasionally have used them for catered events. Their food is consistently good - nothing exceptional. But being consistent is often what you want. No surprises. One thing that is exceptional is the service. They treat you almost like family.

Probably won't go again

By Melissa M |

Tiny, crowded waiting area, average food and margaritas. Everyone's taste is different when it comes to Mexican food. We probably won't go here again. We like Soluna on Broadway better.

SHABBY restaurant with unremarkable food.

By T N |

My wife and I were the guests of another couple for a late lunch at El Jarro. The food was ok, but not remarkable in any way. The interior is VERY shabby, the menus were sticky, the chips were stale and service was adequate at best. The place needs a thorough cleaning and an across the board makeover in their decor, menu, food and service.

Solid Mexican food

By FiveDivers |

Great food and great service. George’s salad is wonderful. Best chicken tortilla soup anywhere. Good for lunch and dinner but gets crowded on weekends and doesn’t take reservations…they have a call in system. 4 stars since they charge extra for credit cards.

My new favorite Mexican restaurant in SA TX!

Excellent food and the best service I have ever received in a Mexican restaurant. Such a diverse menu and everything we tried was great. Tres Leches cake to die for!

Good Food and Entertaining Evening

By Kelly K |

In our continuing search for great Mexican food near our home in Schertz, my wife and I enjoyed a Golden Margarita, Chicken Flautas and Beef Fajitas. We had made reservations with a request to be close to the night's entertainment featuring our favorite singer, Yesenia McNett. Not only did we get seated promptly at a desirable table, but received courteous and attentive service from our waiter. The customers seemed to be enjoying their drinks, meals and dancing with groups overflowing to the patio. We had a fun night!

Do not waste your money

By TheaTX |

Went to dinner last night for a birthday. Had reservations and still had to wait 30 minutes for a table. The service was terrible, waited at least another 10 minutes to just get our drink order. The food was ok at best and they got my husband's order wrong. We originally went because of the live band and was disappointed with them. I gave them 2 $10 tips one to play happy birthday and one for another song and the band did not play either one. All in all it was a very disappointing experience, spend your money somewhere else.

A piece of San Antonio history at El Jarro

By Heidi M |

Always great food and great service. Chips and salsa still complimentary ( I find many in SA are starting to charge), but ask for their "other" salsa option if you like really hot! Their menu is true Mexican food, not the areas cheaper Tex-Mex I love their fish Veracruz!! Excellent and always ample to split with hubbie! Atmosphere is cozy and they do have a small bar area. Only negative, bathrooms are small, dingy only 2! Which reminds me, Arturo's margarita the best for a true margarita made with lime juice and top shelf tequila!!

Best Mexican Cuisine on the Northside

By Stephanie T |

This is our go to restaurant for margaritas, great food and dancing on a Friday night. We always bring our out of town guests here and they love it! Why hassle with the traffic downtown? You won’t be disappointed!

We have eaten here three times this week!

By joe |

This place is amazing or fair. Two of our meals, including drinks, entrees, deserts, and service were excellent. One was a disaster! Poor service, very very slow, cold food, and inattentiveness. We complained they fixed it, sending our food to go and giving 50% off but it is just hard to overlook with so many great Mexican food places in San Antonio. And we never heard from the manager, the waiter took care of us. The table behind us were treated as VIPs getting many visits from the management and we got none. Just bad business!

One Great Friday Evening!

By Mike R |

We met friends here on a Friday night while visiting San Antonio. What a fantastic little spot! We didn't order food, but what we saw (on other tables) looked tasty. Bar service was very good, our drinks were excellent, and the atmosphere was phenomenal. Tremendous band, good dance floor space, and fun crowd. We will most definitely be back!!!

Good Food and Service. Nice Live Music

By docwhiteaustin |

Enjoyed dinner on a Saturday evening. Good rock & roll cover band playing dance tunes mostly from '70's. Pretty good margaritas and very good Food. We had Beef Chile Relleno, Enchiladas Suizas, and Chicken Enchiladas with Corn and Verde Sauce. All very fresh and tasty. Good Queso and chips and fresh tortillas. A bit expensive as Tex Mex goes in SA, but definitely above average and much better than the Riverwalk rip offs . Would return for special occasions. Live band is big plus!

Mexican food at its best!

By lornaf778 |

This place is not on the Riverwalk but it is worth the drive north of downtown. Located in a strip mall, it does not immediately show its class, but once inside, it is a gem. The service is excellent and the food is wonderful. Try the cabrito to taste something authentic and delicious.

Best Margaritas!

By Barbara D |

Very nice family owned business with great Mexican food & the very best margaritas! Nachos & Puffy tacos are my favorites!

This is where the San Antonio natives eat

By Dianne T |

Our favorite Texas Mexican restaurant. I always order the Chad Lite Special, because I really don't like refried beans. It comes with 2 chicken anticuchos and 2 beef anticuchos, 2 chicken and black bean nachos, guacamole, small salad and pica de gallo. The anticuchos are marinated and grilled...so tender. They serve chips and pica de gallo when you are seated. I've also had the delicious roasted corn pablano soup on cold days. Sunday they serve a brunch buffet with all of their most popular dishes...it's a great opportunity to try things you've not familiar with...and includes a wonderful desert table! Their margaritas are custom made ( sometimes I have it made without the tequila) . Our favorite waiter is known as 007 and he is quite entertaining.. it's the place we always take our out of town visitors because it's not a tourist spot...everything is made from scratch. That's the first place they want to go when they return. Wonderful service, great atmosphere, delicious food, great margaritas....what else is there?

Updated interior but still the same good food

By Deborah M |

Menu with many choices and great service to deliver your food to the table quickly. My husband and I ordered different entrees and enjoyed everything.

After dentist

By funkikker |

I had not been here in many years. But they catered an event and so I went back to try it. The food was good as normal and the servings were hearty. The service was very good too. The only complaint is the smell coming from the bar as you walk by. Reminds me of an old unclean bar that I use to frequent.

Best Salsa

By Redbend |

Love the complimentary chips & fresh Salsa. Great margaritas & good wine selection. Spinach enchiladas are fabulous. Sunday buffet is extensive. Homemade flour & corn tortillas.

Fairly good

By houstonnative47 |

We went here recently while in town for a wedding. The menu is large and they offered a Sunday brunch that looked pretty good. We however ordered from the menu. I wasn't too impressed but since family lives nearby, I'm sure we will have to go back again at some point.

Justice

By Lucie Casares |

So the El Jarro margaritas. I've consumed many a margarita at El Jarro in my time. Here's what I call the first one that I order: Truth. Suddenly, you know what's real and how to tell the truth to others. The second one is Beauty. Oh, nothing is finer; nothing comes even close. How beautiful to be here. And the third? I call it Justice. But since I never get past the first two, I can never get any justice.

There Are Better Options

By TripleKG |

Several years after my last visit to this restaurant, my husband and I had lunch here on a recent Saturday. Although the exterior is nothing to look at but probably can't be changed (it's in a strip mall), the interior definitely needs some upgrade - it's apparent that nothing has changed here in a very long time, including, e.g., the carpets and wall decorations, which look old and rundown. I found the food (cheese enchiladas with chili gravy, rice and refried beans) mediocre and somewhat greasy. The salsa was good (it uses fresh tomatoes) but it was not replenished when we ran out. The food prices are high relative to other Mexican restaurants that offer equivalent or better quality food and ambiance. Given the hundreds of Mexican options in San Antonio, I'd take a pass on another visit here.

Too long of a Wait for Friday's and Saturdays

By Mbarros |

Would Not recommend this restaurant for a Friday or Saturday they don't have a very good system to check people and customers in All done in paper and not a reliable system. A family next to us waited for one hour and they lost their name on their paper list Servers and food ok but would go back only Monday thru Thursday Server apologized and did very well With many good restaurants I would not go back very soon because of this hour long experience

Hidden Gem

By Travel With Bliss |

This is not really the location you would think for a nice Mexican food restaurant but it is a great surprise. I wanted to try the roasted corn pablano soup, asked for a cup and got a small bowl and ate every bit. This soup is ssoooo rich, creamy and wonderful. I then had the enchilladas verdes and aging they were great. Be sure to aske for their roasted salsa but be ready for the heat. There was a buffet that looked o.k. but we ordered off the menu and were very happy. Their margaritas are fresh lime juice and tequila and that is it. Very authentic. I loved this place.

Our go to for margaritas!

By TexasZs |

The catering is awesome. The queso is American cheese which is amazing! Flour and corn tortillas are delish. Carbon tacos are great! Rice is perfect. Stay away from any tradition texmex. Be adventurous at this place and you will usually find something very yummy!

My new favorite Tex-mex eatery world-wide

By XVictorious |

A buddy and I stopped in to El Jairo on a Saturday after a long day of traveling through the hill country. We had to wait only 5 minutes at this busy place. The wait was well worth it. The food was fresh and the service spot-on. I wanted to order the fish tacos, but the waiter persuaded me to try the shrimp tacos instead - great choice. The meal arrived with fresh salsa, freshly sliced avocados, and all within 10 minutes. The atmosphere was great with lots of families and couples as well.

Over Rated

By ELPScorch |

Saw this restaurant on a food show thought i'd give it a try but we were disappointed. The ambiance is nice but upon arriving to the restaurant we were seated quickly but not given any menus nor our drink orders taken. We were asked if we were there for brunch but they didn't explain how the whole thing worked. We ordered a dish and two of us got the brunch. The food was okay, the only thing that was good was the posole and the tres leches cake. The dish we ordered was okay as well. The service was poor, the waiters spent most of their time taking down and setting up tables and not tending to their customers. We live in El Paso Texas and have hole in the wall restaurants that have better food.

Lunch from hell

Restaurant was too cold and food was cold as well. Enchiladas were too mooshy and had too much cheese.

Hands down the BEST mexican food in San Antonio!

By TAH1963 |

Ok so I have been going to this restaurant for over 40 years! I average at least once a week here. If you are craving tex-mex or higher end fish or tenderloin dishes they have it and it will be awesome. Their salsas are fresh and homemade along with the tortillas! Excellent margaritas and live music on the weekends. The service is great and you really can't go wrong with any menu selection. Trust me I have had them all in 40 years!!

Nice Buffet

By Susan M |

This is a great place to meet friends. There is inside seating and outside patio seating. The buffet is all you can eat and includes a soup, vegetable mix, chicken fajitas, make your own tacos, enchiladas, rice, and beans. Guacamole, chips and salsa are served at the table. They also offer a big menu that has just about any Mexican dish you could want including a very nice looking black bean soup. Very friendly staff. Good price on the buffet…$8.50.

A little hot but enjoyed the music

By Mo.Havard |

The wait was not long..the staff was very nice..but it was veryyyyyyy hot on the inside..there was a lot of ppl in there..but it was unconformably hot..the live band was AWESOMEEEEE..the food was just ok..

El Jarro is where the locals go for great Mexican cuisine.

By Marion D |

El Jarro has been our favorite Mexican restaurant in San Antonio for many, many years because the food and the service are consistently excellent. While El Jarro offers excellent Tex-Mex favorites, their unique dinner specialties are the best choices on the menu. Lately, I've become hooked on their amazing shrimp tacos, over stuffed with giant jumbo shrimp, seasoned with garlic, and served with a delightful sauce. This is a family-owned and operated institution in San Antonio, where the Northside locals go for great Mexican cuisine.

High End Mexican Cuisine

By Stephanlee1 |

Bottom Line Up Front.... Fantastic. I had just finished running errands and I was famished. I was cutting through a parking lot towards West Bitters in an effort to hit up a fast food mexican place but the look of this place instantly caught my eye and I just had to check it out. The parking lot was full from cars so I had to hobble a minute on my crutches to get to the door on the side. There is what appears to be some sort of outdoor seating just under the neon sign but the actual entrance is to the right side. Once inside I was quickly ushered to a small table in the back. Along the way I was able to observe this place had a decent sized bar and a expansive floor for seating to include the outdoors area. Within seconds I was given a menu and a basket of nachos and salsa which were fresh and above average. My drink came just a minute after that and within about 5 minutes my order of Ceviche (which they only make on weekends) was served and it was fantastic. Just about two minutes after that I was served mt Mexican plate which had two enchiladas, a Taco, Tostada, beans and rice. They did not skimp on the ingredients. It was also fresh and all tasty. The presentation was very nice as well so it was a very well rounded meal. I did not leave hungry. The place was clean and the service by the wait staff was professional and courteous. They had a decent selection of wines and other spirits.
