Terrible

By Felicia N |

I ordered a ceviche believing that it was authentic ceviche with cilantro, onions, tomatoes, avocado, and shrimp. However, they said their ceviche is with tuna and not shrimp so I thought I’d try it. When I received the food it was 4 small pieces of tuna with pickles dill and some kind of white sauce. It was a small portion and they charged me $19 for it. I was very disappointed because that wasn’t an authentic ceviche. Google ceviche and you’ll see what a real ceviche is. I will no longer order from this fake Mexican restaurant who doesn’t cater to the authenticity of Mexican food. Plus the ceviche they gave me looked nothing like the picture o just googled from their restaurant

Very Accommodating

By mamakinrocks |

We had a reservation during a very busy time, this past Sunday afternoon. We were over an hour late, as we were coming from 2 1/2 hours away and hit massive traffic. We were able to be seated in the requested booth and we were attended to immediately. Our server, Kira, did a fantastic job. As always, food was delicious and the ambiance was fun and lively. We were able to get to the US soccer game in a timely manner, with the assistance of the El Vez staff! Always love coming here

EXCELLENT PLACE TO EAT ANYTIME

By Chefcolli |

This is a must restaurant to visit if you visit Philly. Forget the Cheese Steak this place is the BEST!! I've been all over the world and this is in the top 10.

Delivered

By Denise P |

Not traditional Mexican food but very delicious. It was very fresh, I ordered the carnita tacos and guacamole. Very tasty!

Very good food

By PeterHa1 |

Temperature check of all patrons, then seated on the street/sidewalk. Guacamole was very good. Chips fresh. All food fresh. Had the sea bass tacos. Not as filing as I'd like but very tasty, spicy enough for a zing. Reading some reviews that people had problem with service. Seeing the 5 tables around me, that wasn't the case with what I witnessed. Would go back there again. One of the top 10 Mexican restaurants I've been to

Excellent service, drinks and food!!

By Debbpep |

My daughter and I had the pleasure of dining here on Sunday. Our waiter was excellent and knowledgable about both the drinks and menu. Service was quick for how crowded the restaurant was!!! The guacomole with goat cheese and pistachos was delicious , as were the blood orange margaritas. Our main courses were served promptly and hot. We will definitely return soon!!!

Second time’s a charm!

By Aaronnoraa |

I was visiting Philly with my girlfriend and we wanted to go one day but there was some festival that day and we didn’t even know! So we got turned away because we didn’t have reservations. The next day we’re leaving the city and was able to get in for breakfast! I had the taco sampler thing and I think she had a chilaquiles thing? But either way, best fish taco I’ve had in a while

Great food

By Mitul29 |

Great fusion Mexican place in Philly. We went here on a weekday for a birthday lunch. The ambiance was good. Not too noisy and the food was delicious. Our server was great and took care of everything. Definitely recommend this place.

Always a Stop During my Nights Out

By Wander |

I frequent El Vez quite a bit. Their Frozen Blood Orange Margaritas are to die for and I will brave drinking them even in the winter. It's always a good time here and the guacamole is always a winner for sharing a snack with friends. They do require reservations at night and it's always a way shorter wait then they will tell you so you may as well just hang out outside rather than going to a different back to wait it out.

A well rated center city Philadelphia Mexican style restaurant.

By Frank Masters |

My wife and I met our son here for lunch while in center city. We were never here before, but my son was. The menu is limited compared to a typical mexican type restaurant, but you'll find something on it for sure. The food was good and service was attentive as well. For a center city eatery, the prices werent that bad. However, Chips and salsa was $10.00 with refills. Asked for two small sides of Hot Sauce for the chips. The three sauces they provided were not hot or even spicy. They charged $1.00 for each little cup. Lager beer was $6.00 (not bad for the city) and the sodas were $4.00. For three adults for lunch, the bill was $87.00 before tip. They featured an old time photo booth taking the usual four photos on a strip, but its not .25 cents anymore LOL, I believe it was 3 bucks or so. Bathrooms are downstairs and there is a bathroom on the main floor for handicap ( I think).

Delicious Food, Disappointing Service at El Vez

By Camron S |

Visited El Vez during my recent trip to Philly. While the food was good, the service left much to be desired. This was my first time at the restaurant, and unfortunately, our waitress seemed annoyed and bothered by us. Perhaps it was because we didn’t order alcohol and she was hoping for a larger tip. She barely visited our table and never once asked if we wanted more drinks or refills. At one point, she just dropped off a menu and asked if we wanted dessert. What I really wanted was to leave. On a positive note, the hosts at the front desk were very welcoming and friendly, both when we arrived and when we left. If the manager is interested in knowing the name of our waitress, I can provide it upon request without embarrassing her in this post.

Great Mexican Food

By Mary R |

We recently dined before a show and the food was delicious! Excellent guacamole, margaritas and the service was impeccable. Fun decor and vibe !

Great tacos! Great vibe!

By SLH021 |

Had lunch after visiting the Flower Show. Friendly front desk staff. The restaurant has a great vibe. Our server, Isabela, was very helpful answering our concerns about gluten free options ( of which there are many). My husband raved about the black cod tacos and I had the delicious Baja shrimp tacos. The corn tortillas, made in house daily, are the best I have eaten. The texture and full corn flavor are amazing. We will definitely return!

Great for Fancy Dinner Night!

By H7376BTkaties |

Went here for a bachelorette dinner with my friends. One of the girls sent her food back (but she’s super picky and this was one of 5 times she did that this week, so she doesn’t count lol). Our dinner was fantastic!! The empanadas were delicious and I will definitely be coming back here when we visit Philly again! Our waiter was great, attentive, and patient! Thanks for an awesome experience!

AMAZING food!

By Happygoluckyang |

I was SO glad we had a reservation. The waits were over two hours at 8pm on a Saturday night. We got the chip and salsa and the chicken tacos for two. My husband LOVED the Rojas salsa. There were a few too choose from. And the tacos we got were chicken and it had all the fixings. It was AMAZING! We also ate outside, it was a really nice night out. I went inside to use the bathroom and it was super loud inside. It would be hard to have a conversation. MUST try!

Mexican food

Yummy food with good choices for vegetarians. Nachos were special. Staff is friendly and efficient. Value for money.

Great vibe and lovely food!

By Nicola M |

Absolutely delicious Mexican food and drinks. The restaurant had a lovely vibe and the staff were attentive and helpful!

Awesome place

By Mitul29 |

We went here for early Valentine's day dinner. We ended up being late due to traffic but the hostess were very understanding and had us seated within 5 min of being there. The margarita Perfecto was perfect and the gucamole was to die for. We had their burrito and cauliflower taco. The portions were good and very tasty. I would recommend going to this place. We added them to our list of future visits.

Such bad service

By Neev321 |

the Bartender got my same drink order wrong twice, delivering both 1. wrong flavour and 2. a frozen margarita (rather than on the rocks) when that is not what I asked for! After he first tried to make out I’d ordered as he delivered, he then admitted he’d made a mistake as he wasn’t concentrating. While presenting me with a bill for both drinks he said he could make me a 3rd attempt at my my originsl order if I wanted to buy another! Food was average and everything overpriced.

Very Nice Dinner! Glad We Found This Spot!!

By PlsTravelWithMe |

Overall, we were pleased with our meal here. We were visiting Philly, wanted a place we could walk to from our hotel and found this restaurant. It does appear that you need reservations because it's a busy place....but we were able to sit at a table near the bar. My Passion Fruit Margarita was good and we enjoyed the "Original" Guacamole and Chips. I had chicken tacos and hubby had shrimp tacos....both were very good! Our server was very nice and attentive. A great place to eat Mexican food while in Philly.

You want Latin/Mexican, go anywhere else on a Saturday night!

By Lynn L |

First the “bouncer” told a mom and child they couldn’t come in because they bought ice cream down the street. She told her child to go get his dad, and the”bouncer” told her “no unoccupied children” she didn’t have her cell phone (it was in the restaurant) and her family was inside. Second after seeing this I felt uneasy about the level of rudeness from the “bouncer” (mind you it’s a restaurant not a bar, not a night club) I went to give my name for a table. They guy literally shoved my husband with his arm and told him “one person at a time inside” a simple “we only allow one person to enter the name, sorry” not physically block a human. Inside was dirty, the bathroom was gross, and it had a community sink. Very odd. Just pass on this place.

Great Mexican Appetizers in a Loud Restaurant

By COtravelfam04 |

We stopped in for an afternoon snack and loved the food. It was so delicious that we will return for a full meal. That said, the restaurant is extremely loud. So next time we are in Philly when the weather is nice we hope to get a table and eat outside.

Delicious meal and fun vibes!

By Mary C |

Fantastic dinner! Shrimp quesadilla and short rib enchiladas! The margaritas are tasty and well-balanced. The staff is friendly and attentive. Save room for dessert- the orange flan and tres leches cake are amazing! We'll be back the next time we are in Philly! The restaurant is just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

A Steven Starr Gem for Mexican Food Lovers

By Bunker Blake |

My wife, our two-year-old daughter, and I visited El Vez this past Friday evening, and we had a fantastic experience. As devout fans of Stephen Starr’s restaurants, we’ve been to many of his other spots but, for some reason, had never made it to El Vez. We live closer to El Rey (another favorite of ours), which might explain why we hadn’t ventured to the other side of Broad until now. After this visit, we can confidently say we’ll be back—and we’re already planning to bring my parents, who love Mexican food, on their next trip to Philly. We arrived around 5:20 PM without a reservation, and despite the restaurant being packed, the hostess was incredibly kind, helpful, and welcoming. We were seated quickly, a pleasant surprise given the busy atmosphere. The space was much larger than I expected, with a great vibe and much energy. The central bar, complete with a lowrider bike on display, adds a unique touch, and the windows along the perimeter flood the room with natural light, which we appreciated. The food was outstanding. We started with chips and guacamole, which were perfectly done. The Caesar salad was excellent. For our main courses, my wife had the steak tacos, and I opted for the taco sampler. We also shared a side of street corn. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We definitely overordered, but that’s on us! Next time, we’ll be more strategic, though every bite was worth it. We didn’t try the margaritas this time, but they’re on my list for our next visit. The service was another highlight—our server was kind, attentive, and approachable, striking a great balance between being helpful and allowing us to enjoy our meal. Overall, El Vez has a lively, welcoming atmosphere, excellent food, and great service. It’s a perfect spot for a group meal or a casual family night out. We’re thrilled we finally made it and can’t wait to return—this time with more family and friends in tow.

Modern mexican lacking atmosphere and taste

By hungmung |

Expensive for what it is. Very much geared towards the American palette. Service was OK, but a little brusque for a US restaurant. Nothing particularly wrong, but there are better places.

Good tacos, good margaritas - chips need work + very loud

By Misplaced_Childhood |

On the "Good-Meh-Suck" scale, this is a solid "Meh-minus/Good+plus" El Vez is not cheap but the food is good for the most part. The salsa fresca (pico de gallo) was great. The guacamole was equally good. The problem was the chips were lackluster which detracted from the experience. As for the food, the carnitas tacos were on point. Small but good. A little pricey but such is life. The Granada margarita was very tasty. It was very, very loud which meant conversations were basically impossible. Also, the heat wave did not help. It felt as if the place was the same temperature as outside. I would assume on a normal day, the A/C would be able to keep up but not when it is almost 100 degrees outside. Will I go back? probably.

Night out for dinner

By Erich S |

Went on a late Sunday afternoon expecting to beat the rush, we were sadly mistaken, make sure you make reservations. Was told at door 30-40min wait, ended up being nearly 90min. However, the manager in charge, sadly didn’t get her name, took great care of us, she comped us an order of guacamole, and apologized for the wait. All good! The wait was well worth it, I had the Mahi Mahi Tacos which I would argue were the best I’ve ever had, the gf had the carnitas tacos which she enjoyed immensely. Top notch service and food. Will definitely be back.

Not here.

By Henke_dk |

Classic Mexican Restaurant in downtown Philadelphia. Service was good and the atmosphere was lovely. But the food was boring without love and cannot be recommended. There are other Mexican places downtown that are better.

Do not eat here! The service is horrific for take away

By Peter S |

So again, I ordered a mean for New Year’s Eve. The gave me the wrong order. I called and their response was hustle back down and we will fix it??????? Really? New Year’s Eve? It was your error and I have to remedy it???? I live 2 blocks away - the correct response would have been we will replace it and have it deliver- Happy New Year. But no, they were too busy punching the till. They do not care about their local customers or their local neighborhood.

One word: SEABASS TACOS

By Gastronomica_lady |

This place was recommended to me by a friend, the whole place vibe is cool, colorful and full of life. I had the seabags tacos, my friend had the shrimp tacos, my dish was divine, the fish was crisped to perfection, yet not overcooked. The guacamole with the habanero and mango pieces and jicama was so yummy I gladly wiped the whole thing off. Their salsa was a little too salty. Oh and the corn on the cob, the waitress forgot to punch it in and so we received it very very late and we were full but they were so nice they apologized and took it off the bill. Now that's outstanding customer service, they didn't even receive a complaint from us or anything. I would very much recommend you go, and I definitely will return.

Excellent food!!

By Julie R |

We went here for an early Valentine's Day Dinner. Food is outstanding, as well as drinks!! We tried 4 different margaritas and loved them all, they were not weak!! We had the tacos for 2, which were incredible!! we also ordered the grilled corn which we loved!! We will definitely be back!! Make sure you make reservations in advance this place gets crowded!!

Great Lunch Spot

By Douglas Womelsdorf |

I was in the city to accompany a family member who was there for surgery. We stopped here for lunch. This is one of my go-to places when I visit the city and it did not disappointment again. We made a reservation online ahead of lunch just in case the time we wanted was going to be busy. The server was awesome and friendly and the food was delicious as always!

The best Mexican food in Philly

By Floyd2Carolina |

On a recommendation we went for dinner. Had to wait for a table but worth every second of the 30 min wait. We started with traditional guacamole that was so good and not at all salty. For dinner we had steak tacos and short rib enchiladas with mole. Highly recommend this trendy restaurant.

Loud, crazy and decent food and drink

By Kevin C |

Typical Mexican fare, heavy emphasis on the Guacamole offerings. Popular does not even begin to describe the place. If a loud, raucous crowd is not your style then this place is not for you. Glad I went, to get a bit of trendy wendy philly style for my weekend but probably wont return.

Fresh food for small sizes

By THEJetSetGirl |

The food was incredibly fresh, not greasy and extremely flavorful. Portion size is a bit underwhelming, especially for the shareable Nacho Mama which is little more than crackers with pico de gallo at $12.50 and the double margarita was a whopping $27.50 served in a water glass

Reliable Spot for Fab Meal and Fun

By PoolLovinFoodies |

One of the classic Philly spots; always enjoy grabbing a bite here! If possible, plan ahead and make a rese on OT; otherwise likely a long wait. We snagged a table right next to the bar without a rese at 8pm on a Wednesday....super packed. It was difficult to have a conversation- volume better in the normal seats around the perimeter. Margs and sangria are always divine; “Bazooka” Limon guacamole amazing, and sea bass tacos a treat. Service was good.

Delicious...

By Julie C |

I ordered the Mahi Fish Tacos. The food was deliciously excellent but a little pricey for what you get. The vibe was exciting and fun, although it got kind of loud and I could barely hear myself talk

Why is it so Crowded!?!

By Scott C. |

Because it's very good. Excellent food, efficient service, big menu, comfortable space, a good variety of drinks. It's worth the (brief) wait to enjoy yourself there. And I'm from L.A. and know good South-of-the-Border food.

Great Mexican

By DonaldQuackers |

Had the guacamole starter to share and then tacos and other selections. Great food and service from welcoming and friendly staff.

El Vez is always excellent!

By Sofia425 |

El Vez is always excellent! The food is delicious and always very filling. The margaritas are awesome. The ambiance is fun, creative and comfortable. The tables are spacious, and even the smaller tables have booths and cushioned seating. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall, an excellent experience!

Love this place

By Joe C |

We have been here many times and it never disappoints. I normally get the Enchiladas which are amazing. But this time I tried the adobo chicken and the chicken tacos. Both were insane. And of course the service was top notch as usual.

My Favorite Restaurant in Philly

By Tritons2012 |

This was my first time in Philly and a lady I met on the trolley recommended El Vez. I went my first night in town and it was so good I went back a couple of nights later with some friends. They were very busy both nights. The first night the hostess sat me at a high top in the bar area and I had a great view of the whole restaurant. The hostess was very nice and asked me about myself and gave me suggesyions of places to go and things to do while I was in town. I didn’t catch her name, but she was great! I saw her the 2nd time and she remembered me and treated me like an old friend. The servers were just as friendly. On to the real reason you are reading this: the food. The guacamole was amazing! I had the chicken tacos the first night and the Enchiladas Mixtas (chicken, beef, and black bean) the second time. Both dishes were very tasty! I loved the food and the atmosphere was really cool.

Wow

By Heather D |

We are originally from the area but live in Az now so are always skeptical of restaurants back east that claim to be great at Mexican food honestly because usually it’s pretty bland in comparison to what we’re used to, but let me tell you this place is LEGIT! Wow! We got the guacamole, chicken tacos, red Chile enchiladas, and side of street corn and I’m still thinking of that meal. It was a little pricy but totally worth it!!! We are ready to fly back and eat there again! If you’re in the area try this place! You will NOT regret it!!!

Wonderful food

By Anna R |

This restaurant has a wonderful variety of Mexican food and drink offerings. Bookings need to made a few weeks out for larger groups. The restaurant is reliably busy, but the waitstaff remains attentive. I love this restaurant when I have a craving for good Mexican food.

Not worth the money!

By Markell38 |

My family and I went to El Vez because of the supposedly great reviews online. The atmosphere was nice. The restaurant was busy, and very noisy. I didn’t mind that. We all made our orders with the waitress. We finally got our meals and was very disappointed by how small the portions was. Listen, I don’t mind spending some cash if the value of the meal is worth it. I literally walked out of the restaurant hungry and we paid a hefty price tag. Food was absolutely delicious but I will think twice about going back. If you come there with an appetite prepare to be disappointed.

Awesome choice for fun, drinks and decor

By W6Raven |

Great vibe! Excellent Staff and Service! Met a friend for drinks at the bar. We went with the Classic El Vez margarita but there were plenty more to choose from. Had chips and the spicy guacamole- excellent partner for the margaritas! You can’t go wrong here for dinner, drinks or apps!

nachos

By Ocean 215 |

This was a great meal! We shared several things, all of which were fabulous. The nachos look like a pizza and had the best flavor. The open face shrimp Quesdillo was so fresh. My husband had the tampiquena steak and enjoyed it. The shrimp tacos were delicious. Our friends shared the tacos for two with steak and chicken. They said they were oustanding and took leftovers home. The drinks were on point and fresh. We had a variety among all of us and enjoyed the margarita and my friend enjoyed the expresso martini. The place was packed. We did have a reservation and were seated on time. The bar seats were full at all times with people waiting to jump in each time someone left. The bathrooms are downstairs. The facilities are gender seperate but the sinks are communal outside the restrooms. So don't be surprised when the opposite gender comes next to you to wash your hands like I was. I though I was in the wrong restroom. :) It was a good laugh for all of us. Great meal, friendly staff and good drinks. Highly recommend.

Guacamole for people who love guacamole

By mgoblue |

Holy guacamole. I had no idea guacamole could be so diverse. Much like the crowd on a weeknight! It was crazy busy on a Wednesday at 7pm - an hour wait but we lucked out and grabbed two seats at the bar where we knew we could still order food and drinks. The bartender took good care of us. My coworker and I split the De La Hoya guacamole which came with a huge basket of really dang good chips - thick, fresh, not too salty, not greasy - and a little cup of a tomatillo-like salsa which was also delish. I ordered a guava mojito which I highly recommend. We both got the chicken tacos which were very good, especially when topped with more guacamole. My coworker ordered a side of the creamy poblano rice and I should’ve gotten my own because it was GOOD. I was glad it was just the two of us though because it has a really cool, dark funky vibe but it was LOUD and we could barely hear each other. You wouldn’t want to have actual business conversations in that environment but casual conversations were fine. I loved our El Vez experience and can’t wait to return in April when I’m back in town to try another guacamole.

Love the vibe

By miscalane |

This was our first visit - we’ve been trying to get rez forever. We loved the vibe and the drinks! The staff was extremely friendly and attentive! We should’ve asked friends or read reviews for food suggestions because most of our choices were just ok. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Highlights were the corn on the cob and plantain side dishes. The chicken enchiladas, carnita tacos and très léchés were meh.

Philly Hot Spot, with lots of great food & drinks!

By TSA |

El Vez is located in a "hot spot" area of downtown Philly. I went there on a Friday night and it was hopping! Lots of young people, couples as well as families. I sat at the bar and enjoyed the same great service as people sitting at tables. The restaurant is known for fine Mexican cuisine along with a tequila inspired cocktails (margaritas, etc.) draft beer and any cocktail you may desire. The menu is filled with tasty options and you do not have to limit yourself to just one entree because....you CAN order item a la carte. As an example, I tried the black cod tacos and the mahi mahi tacos, with as single order of each versus the full entree versions. The bartender recommended the empanada appetizer and it was very good. Pro Tips - try and make a reservation; if not, you can wait at the bar until your table is ready. They turn the tables pretty quickly so the wait did not seem to be too long. Due to the atmosphere clientele and structure of the building, El Vez is a bit loud. So if you are looking for a quite, intimate dinner, this is probably not your 1st choice. However, if you want a lively, up tempo atmosphere then you will enjoy El Vez.

Sunday night dinner

By temptraveler |

Staying on 13th street in Philadelphia gave a great opportunity to visit the El Vez restaurant. It’s a really hopping place in the evenings. It was a 45 minute wait for a table, but it was worth it. We ordered a Chicken/Beef al Carbon (tacos) and they were delicious. Still steaming on the grill plate. Service was also great by Kira. The only fault that could be found was that is was very noisy, tough to keep a conversation going. Will revisit if in the Philadelphia area again.

One of my favorite restaurants!

By Daniela N |

One of my favorite restaurants in Philly! Their margaritas are bomb! Specially the skinny margaritas (I get them spicy) or pineapple jalapeño margaritas . Make sure to order their nachos !! Also, it’s always packed, so make reservations... even if it’s a Monday!

Excellent food and service.

By ERFSU82 |

This is a nice casual Mexican restaurant with a fun atmosphere. We visited for a business dinner on a Sunday night, and it was very crowded, so a reservation is suggested. Our food and service were excellent.

So good!! Atmosphere was so fun!!!

By KathyD |

Our first restaurant to try in Philly and we absolutely loved it!! We started with a pitcher of margaritas, and a bowl of guacamole.......omgosh so good! Enchilades, and tacos and burrito. Everything was super great! Especially loved the guacamole!!

Excellent all around

By Tink |

Staff was friendly. Place was clean. Food was very tasty. Service was quick. Make reservation if you can, unless you don’t mind waiting for over an hour during dinner time. Lunch time not as busy but definitely a wait. Guacamole and chips and salsa are delish. The Mahi Mahi tacos and roasted corn are my favs!

Outdoor eating with full Covid protocols

By Drew31 |

Have to pass temperature scan to enter. We had an outdoor table on Sansom Street as streets both way were blocked off for restaurants. Good brunch options, drinks and friendly staff.

Can’t go wrong with El Vez

By Laura W |

The food and service was really good, their guacamole is always a good choice, the chips and salsa are excellent. We had the Tacos for two, which is huge, my two teenagers couldn’t finish it. I had the Mahi Mahi tacos, the sauce on them is divine. I get them without the cabbage, new favorite! It’s not cheap, but it’s goid quality, tasty, and the people are really nice. A perennial winner!

Pretty good mexican bad service

By Kavita S |

Came to El Vez on a Saturday night - hoping place but we came in around 9-930pm. Sat outside as weather was lovely and inside was too noisy. Ordered the empanadas which were good (could have used a little more salt imo). For entrees, we ordered black bean enchiladas and cauliflower tacos. I forgot to mention to the waitress to remove capers so they had to make them again. On the re-make, the cauliflower was super oily and dripping on the taco. The sauces for both items were great. Our problem was our waitress. She took forever to come, too long to refill waters (she actually only refilled mine once at the end of the meal). Since they had to make the tacos again, we shared the black bean enchiladas. When the tacos came out, we asked for more dipping sauce. It took the waitress SO long we basically ate cold tacos as we gave up waiting for her to bring the sauce out. When she actually brought the sauce, it didnt taste the same as the one on the plate of tacos so we questioned her. She had an attitude about her bringing the right sauce "Why would I bring any other sauce?" We told her it didnt taste the same, but she did not want to listen or even say she might have gotten/been given the wrong sauce. At the end of the night, we split the check, and were deciding on the tip. Despite the delayed service and mild rudeness we felt, we were not going to cause that to affect our tip. I asked my friend how much tip to give, which she apparently overhead and came to ask if there was a problem with the service because she HEARD my question of how much to tip her. (I was asking since we split the check to be sure our tip was appropriate between the 2 of us not for any other reason). I was so taken aback I really couldn't say anything to her. Due to that incident, Im jaded to the restaurant. Not sure if she was having a bad day or if this is always how service is. Next time, maybe pay more attention to your customers and be less antagonistic.

Great vibes great food

By Emily Trizano |

An upbeat trendy mexican restaurant with amazing food and great drinks! Service was super nice and helpful. Also have a cute photo booth for pictures which was so fun. Went for a big group birthday dinner and the experience was great. Had a preset menu and everything came out delicious and perfect! Picture is of the nacho dish... and wow! So good!

Awesome

This place has great decore and friendly staff. The food was fantastic. Great nachos and salsa. Steak and shrimp tacos we're great.

Noisy Mix of Mex

By Johnji |

We were anxious to try a relatively new Steven Starr venue in Philadelphia that is advertised as a more or less upscale Mexican restaurant. When we arrived at the place on a cold January evening, we were not surprised by the bright, glizzy ambience that screamed midcentury modern Mexican. By 6 PM, the time of our reservation, the place was hopping crazy and loud. That kind of energy is no real judge of the ultimate experience but saddly the food couldn’t compensate. It was all mediocre. No standouts among the dishes sampled by the four of use. Bottom line seems to be, go there for the margueritas if that is your priority.

Excellent stop for lunch

By Chris E |

Went to El Vez for a quick lunch before hopping around the city. Walked in and with our reservation, we were seated right away. Our server was promptly at our table and made some recommendations on things that she liked. We decided on both of us having the chicken soft tacos ( cheese, avocado, tomatillo & tomato salsa, crema) and one had the tortilla soup, all which were excellent. They have a great tequila selection, although I decided on a Dos Equis Amber on tap. Lunch was served promptly ans it was a great value for $42.00 Would definitely recommend this to others, but beware, I would make reservations for lunch as well as dinner

Awesome and authentic

By JP Fitzgerald |

Everything was what you’d expect from a good authentic Mexican restaurant - good service, atmosphere, margies, tacos, etc. highly recommend the Mahi Mahi tacos and some fresh made guac.

Good Atmosphere, Good Appetizers

By Brooke Hinkle |

El Vez is a good place to come to sit at the bar and have a drink and some chips and guacamole. When it comes to their entrees, you’ll be disappointed if you don’t like authentic Mexican (tacos are soft shell, not your typical cheese, tomato, lettuce and they use very different sauces). The atmosphere is nice: the decorations inside are great; however, if you arrive later than 5 pm, good luck getting a seat for dinner. The entrees are rather expensive and not worth it in my opinion, so I think this place is perfect for hanging out at the bar and having some appetizers.

Brunch Burger

By Kevin B |

I know it's weird to order a burger from a Mexican restaurant but the burger here is nearly perfect. Only available on the brunch menu which is Saturday and Sunday. The salty cheese is delicious paired with the pablano aioli. Super cool vibes and atmosphere.

Solid

By lunahod |

I've tried multiple dishes there on several occasions and haven't been disappointed yet. Well executed meat/fish/veggies with skilled soucmanship. Cocktails are tasty and strong. A solid Mexican restaurant when failure is not an option.

When a place is this popular, and has a bar vibe, who expects such above average food? Warning: portions are huge. Guacamole will serve four easily. Chicken quesadilla, listed as an appetizer, can be a main for two. Reserve ahead or expect a wait.

Real Mexican food

By Floresmeyer |

Very decorations. Excellent service and great food. The lunch special is a great value and plenty of food I had the Torta de Milanesa that was made by the book. Also the sopa de tortilla Very good restaurant

Brilliant Mexican place to eat

By Oliver A |

A popular place and I can see why! The staff were very polite and friendly. Service was superb. I can safely say I had the best nachos I've ever tried and the prices were reasonable. What are you waiting for? Get yourself down there!

I am not a fan of Mexican food but this was excellent!

By Whareareugoing |

I had posted on Facebook that I was in Philly and a friend said that she and her husband go here every time they are in town. So, I tried it, despite not really being a fan of Mexican food. This is not your average Mexican food place. Yum! I got the shrimp tacos I think it was. I got 3 small soft shell tacos. I think they had just avocado, that Mexican cheese, and shrimp and a great sauce. The best tacos ever! I also liked my drink. I was a little early so I had no trouble getting a seat but this place gets packed and is a little noisy. It is has a neat interior space. Liked it very much.

Secret Menu

By Flyonthewall |

Coming from Southern California I can say this place is a great find when visiting Philly! The jalapeño margaritas are very decent but the Nachos are on point - get them Carne Asada and topped with their cream corn (not on the menu). It’s enough for two people to share for dinner - experience deliciousness north of the border!

Worth the wsit

By James Hytner |

Guac at its best - fresh with a perfect balance of lime, cilantro and salt. The bass and shrimp tacos let the fish be the stars. The steak and pork tacos were caramelized and seasoned to enhance the meats and not over power them. Mahi Mahi tacos had more dressing than the others which kept it from being dry. The chicken taco was a little dry but overall the tacos matched some of the best I have had at LA taco trucks. Tres Leche cake had classic flavor profile. The service was fast and attentive. Don’t let the wait scare you - enjoy a margarita - the food is worth the weight.

Fantastic!

By Alli F |

Pay off eight. Split tickets confused them a little, but it didn't matter. Everything was so SO Good! We went through two enormous bowls of guacamole. There were plenty of choices for the vegetarians amongst us, and the carnivores we're definitely happy. The Frozen blood orange Margarita - Mmmmmmmmm!!! I highly recommend the empanadas.

What a delight...

By Michelle A |

WOW! I spotted this restaurant while walking to an Italian place for dinner, and I could smell the freshly made guacamole wafting through the air! On our way back to the hotel, we passed El Vez again, and the place was absolutely packed. So, last night, we decided to try it, and I’m so glad we did! The food is phenomenal! I ordered the grilled tofu carbon taco plate, and let me tell you, the tofu was cooked and spiced to perfection. My friends went for the tortilla soup, Tuna-Coconut Ceviche, and the Crispy Mahi-Mahi Tacos, and everything was just exquisite. Each dish was a delight, perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. I could not recommend this restaurant enough! If you're in the area, make sure you stop by El Vez. You won’t regret it!

Another great visit, during our Philadelphia weekend

By mamakinrocks |

Love the vibe and energy at El Vez. We sat at the bar and our server, Michelle, did a great job. Husband and I shared the mahi tacos and the bazooka limon guacamole w/ chips and salsa. I had the cadillac margarita and husband had the red sangria. Delicious!

Extremely disappointing!

By snobfood |

Extremely disappointing! We felt rushed. It was cold. The tacos were subpar. The food just didn’t seem fresh. Salad was just ok. Guacamole was very good but that was it. Service was great though. I have expected more from a David Starr restaurant.

Everything about this place is excellent

By Autumn M |

We loved the food. The steak tacos and the chopped salad were delicious. The white sangria was excellent. The tres leches and the churros were amazing. I will definitely go back.

Late night nibble

By Tenpinktoes |

We popped in for a 10:45 pm reservation and had some great chicken quesadillas. Service was fast and friendly. Beers were cold and out speedy!

Guac & Crab are Musts

By Sara G. |

Love me some El Vez. Whether it’s Fort Lauderdale or Philly, I typically stop in! Repeat after me… Guac with Crab 🥑 🦀 Their opened face shrimp quesadilla is my favorite thing! Love the corn for a side.

Rude, rude, rude.

By Walaitswendy |

Rude, rude, rude. We are at Jefferson losing a loved one. Came out to get a break. Hostess in holy pants with her stomach hanging out was so rude. Told us to go somewhere else as she rolled her eyes.

Great Food, Big Portions, Great Service

By slaterinde |

We stopped in before a show and were treated to really good Mexican food. We told the waitress that we had a show to get to and she was very accommodating. My wife was delighted to learn that all of their margaritas are made with fresh squeezed lime juice - they never use any mixers at their bar. The food portions were large and we left satisfied that we could make it through the show. I can recommend the chicken quesadilla appetizer, the kale salad and the De La Hoya guacamole.

Absolutely delicious

By Philippa B |

I came here for my first dinner in Philadelphia - and the food was divine. I ordered the black bean enchiladas and the roasted brussel sprouts. They were bursting with flavour, and there was ample food to eat so I left comfortably full. I also ordered a margherita, which was very tasty (surprisingly, as I nominally am not a fan of Tequila at all). My only suggestion would be to think about expanding their drinks menu to include more other than just tequila based drinks... but then again, it is a Mexican restaurant so what can I really expect. The staff were very welcoming, and as I was sitting outside they had very powerful heaters so the temperature was perfect. I would definitely recommend!

Quick bite or full dinner thoroughly impressed

By Ryan B |

Incredible selection of Mexican inspired food and classics. Handful of guacamole choices and the extravagant drink menu that keeps you coming back for more! Have been to NY and Philadelphia locations and both are up to the highest standards of professionalism and food quality!

Best bar in town

By Hiram C |

The bar is huge with a revolving bicycle. The place is jumping and sitting at the bar is best, you can talk to strangers.

Delightful lunch!

By Virginia Adams O |

Everything we ordered was fantastic and the service was terrific--thank you, Tess. We highly recommend the tuna tostadas, shrimp tacos, cauliflower tacos and brussels sprouts. And of course, you need to follow all that with an order of churros! Can't wait to go back.

Happening place for Mexican food

By Tracy M |

Rated the place average based upon our experience and quality of food and service. Nothing was particularly disappointing but for the price we expected a better meal and dining experience. The place certainly is liked by many as it was packed. We'd made reservations so did not have to wait, but I'm sure there had to be one. This location seems to be a popular hang out for the younger crowd seeking drinks and smaller portion bar type food. The bar area was very crowded and loud. The interior is really cool. Some booths are purple velour there is a motorcycle over the bar just the entire place is richly decorated in many Mexican theme. The menu has plenty of choices. I felt prices were a little high. Our food was ok. Nothing was specifically bad/wrong but just didn't really have that wow factor we were hoping for. Service was spotty, had to flag down our server a couple times for refills or other needs. Seems like a really fun place for those seeking drinks and a bar scene. For family dining maybe not so much. We were there early so may have had a different experience had it been later?

Lively, good drinks and food

By Traveleator |

El Vez is situated amongst a host of other eateries on 13th and is lively in the evening with a round bar and many tables to sit by. The usual fare of tequila cocktails (and more) and Mex food. Nice for a fun evening.

Good, but not great as a lunch spot to meet friends

By SESNoVA |

Noisy… not a good place for a conversation. Guacamole was freshly made and delicious as was the salsa. Mexican chopped salad with grilled shrimp was fresh, but not particularly flavorful. Had to wait a long time for the check.

No longer a Fan

By Meryl C |

My girlfriend and I went for lunch and from the start things were bad and sadly went downhill from there. The hostess greeted us and though many booths were open, she started to say they were reserved for reservations and wanted to sit us at a not as comfortable table. When we questioned about the at least 5 available booths, she finally accommodate us but with attitude. Several years ago I was impressed with the guacamole with goat cheese and pistachio nuts. I have been making my guacamole like this ever since. This time the guacamole was a let down. Apparently the “student “ became better than the “ teacher”. The portion was smaller than I remember it. You needed a magnifying glass to find the pistachio nuts. There was too much lime in the guacamole and it overpowered the taste. We had more chips to guacamole ratio so we asked for a tiny amount of cheese dip. This was a special request, something not on the menu as an add on. By the time we received it the chips were finished. The amount charged for it was way overpriced as well. My fiend ordered the short rib enchiladas with mole. She took one bite and didn’t like it. I tasted it because I really like mole and I am very familiar with how it should taste after spending many years in Mexico. It was not good at all, in fact it tasted very strange. I gave her half my chicken burrito instead of waiting for a replacement entree. The burrito was decent but filled with more rice than other ingredients. We both did not enjoy our meal and were sad we didn’t go back to Parc because the day before we ate lunch there and had a terrific lunch. Sadly we did not have the same good experience as yesterday. We felt the quality and taste of our food was really not up to par or what we remember from the past. After we left the restaurant and went back to our car and started to drive to our next stop, we passed a fast food Mexican Restaurant chain and both looked at each other and both realized the same thought at the same time and shook our heads. Yes this would have been a better option then our disappointing lunch. Yesterday’s lunch at Parc was so perfect, sadly todays lunch at El Vez was a total miss.

Excellent

By Kayleigh B |

The best nachos I’ve ever had, they’re not only homemade chips but they serve them on a pizza tray so every single chip has toppings. It’s genius and delicious! High quality ingredients too. The poblano and corn empanadas were perfect and the tacos were also really good. Highly recommend.

Definately worth 5 stars!

By vasu r |

From service to food- the whole experience was amazing. We are checking out the NYC ElVez this weekend with out of town family.

Good Meal

By N R |

We had the Nachos, enchiladas, steak and chicken tacos. The tacos were amazing, full of flavor, and lots of meat. Nachos were tasty. The enchiladas were gross, surprisingly no flavor, blandish. Dessert....Churros were not cooked properly. El vez was different liked it. It is worth trying.

A Philly favorite

By Hawkeye4077 |

Stop here any time I’m in Philly. The drinks and food are top notch! I’ve never spoken so highly about corn before but you really do have to try it! Everything I’ve had has been amazing. Drinks are on point. It’s busy so plan accordingly, but highly recommend stopping.

Loud, felt like a party, excellent food

By JacquelinaUSA |

This was a fun place to eat. It was loud, busy with people, so felt like walking into a party went we walked in. The food was excellent, the service very good, and the drinks were very good too. Definitely worth a return trip.

Best Mexican we’ve ever had!

By Casedogg21 |

Hands down best food ever. Make sure you get there early and get a reservation. For 2 people you could wait 2 hours!! But definitely with it.

Horrible visit

By Athena Y |

Hi I am a mom with two young boys with my friends all moms Accused us of taking off our “shoes” in the restroom, meanwhile none of us took any shoes off even went to their restroom. Manager “Tom” has no clue of what is going on and didn’t even apologize for his treatments of us at the table. We ordered guacamole and a few drinks. Horrible management and horrible serving. Do not spend your money here.

El Vez ROCKS!!!

By Jeff H |

Best Mexican Food I have ever had. The appetizers were sooooo good. The crab ceviche was totally delightful. Drinks were solid and never had to ask for a refill. Main course dishes were OUTSTANDING. The shrimp tacos will have you floating on air. The shrimp dish was filled with spices that had your tongue asking for air. SOOOOOO GOOD! Their flan was light, tasteful, and delicious. Their sorbet was a great way to top your dinner. You cannot go wrong at EL Vez, Great atmosphere, music has you dancing at your table. Service with a smile.

HIT OR MISS--OVERPACKED TABLES, LOUD, UNCOMFORTABLE

By CHEFJDK |

OVERPACKED+UNCOMFORTABLE 7pm SATURDAY. 4 Adults.Declined our request for open side booth 5Top available. 4Top in middle of the floor. All tables on sides had extra chairs placed in path of servers & customers to get thru. Chair bumped entire night 7pm-10pm. Asked to get up by food server twice. MGRS Dan & Nicole did nothing to correct problem. At 10 pm told us they wanted to rotate our table forcing us to leave. We all had drinks, apps & entrees. FOOD & DRINK VERY AVERAGE.Completely different experience compared to 2 years ago. Bathroom was a gross mess.NOT worth $$$ Bad Experience. Love Starr Restaurants. Butcher & Singer, Stella, Parc are All Awesome--10.

Quirky atmosphere, really good food, and really good service.

By WVParkfan |

Quirky atmosphere, really good food, and really good service. Can be very, very busy in the evenings and on the weekends, so you'll want to be sure to get a reservation.

Very popular and crowded place

By JeddaCath |

This is a very popular restaurant always extremely crowded and very loud. The first time we went we were told a 2 1/2 hour wait so we went back the next day we were told 90 minutes but the manager found us a table outside immediately The food is good. The guacamole was excellent. The enchiladas were ok nothing great. Chicken Quesadillas were ok too.

Gorgeous colorful restaurant

By Travelboots |

Gorgeous colorful restaurant with fun vibe. The waiters wear shirts with their photos from a photo booth. Go for the guacamole- stay for the Brussels sprouts. So delicious.

All flair no guts.

By Matthew W |

When claiming to be Mexican it is magnificently important to embrace spice and flavor. I was so excited to get some chorizo taco's with authentic spicy salsa. Unfortunately the service was sub par and the food was lack luster. We ordered queso chorizo and chips and salsa. The fundido was exceptional however, the chips came way at the end and ruined the experience. We tried their tacos, and they were served on cold flour tortillas. The place is decorated great and funky, but more touristy and not genuine enough for my taste. Give me street tacos in Tijuana any day.

Children at bar

By Shannon |

I have been here a few times before, and always had a good time. This was the first time that I went and had a bad experience. Yes, it was a Friday night, and I expected it to be busy. I expected to not to get a spot at the bar. I expected to wait for a table. But what I did not expect was this establishment to allow young children to sit at the bar and take up seats where adults could sit. There were two families sitting at the bar and each family had two and three kids between them. While all the children were not at the bar seated, several were, which caused my friend and I to have to leave because we could not be accommodated. I just don’t understand what kind of business practice that is, not to mention it’s breaking the law. Good luck with that!

Authentic Mexican in the middle of Philadelphia

By Antonio Nieto Rodriguez |

Delicious and authentic Mexican food in downtown Philadelphia. Very tasty and with a light modern touch.

Yummy, trendy & lively

By 413FamilyTraveler |

Visiting Philly for UPenn’s graduation. Our son suggested El Vez. It was a Saturday night and we couldn’t get a reservation BUT if you walk in to get on the list they will call you when a table is ready. It took about 90 minutes but we got a table. The food was delicious! Service was excellent. El Vez was busy, lively & trendy. The bar area had lots of young-ish people having a great time but not obnoxious at all - just fun. Definitely give El Vez a try! And try the guacamole! And the tortilla soup!

another good meal

By adventurefamilyfive |

El Vez has become a regular stop when in Philly. The blood orange margaritas and fish tacos were excellent once again.

Blood orange margarita is the best!!

By Sierra F |

I love their blood orange margarita and pink Cadillac one. Their food is pretty good too. Love their cauliflower tacos. They have an amazing kale salad. Very lively place, always. Like super busy every day of the week. It’s kinda loud but that’s expected. Service is good too.

Loved it

By PeterBarras |

Went solo before the conference started and loved it. Bit loud but sitting at the bar got great service and the tacos sampler was more than enough and wonderful flavours. Happily go back

Moderate Priced Fine Dining

By IGNDJ |

Group of 11 on team building event. The service was first rate, not only at our table but all around us. The waitress was very attentive, professional and on the spot at every turn. The food was well prepared, presented and served, everyone was blown away by the freshness and the flavours they bring into each dish is subttle yet tasty- not overly seasoned. I walked -in a skeptical customer and walked-away in love with the place. I ordered a shrimp taco, a sea bass taco and a chicken taco. Also the DeLa Jolla Guacamole. All of it was made to perfection. I can compare this to the fusion tastes at Minero in Charleston. A great dinning experience. Tryly hoping that I can get back before heading out of town.

Unique, vibrant gem

By Karen O |

The concierge at our hotel recommended a couple of places nearby. She described El Vez as a "non traditional" Mexican place with more of a "diner" vibe. I would say that is very accurate. We loved El Vez. Our server was fantastic. Very attentive and made some excellent recommendations. The guacamole was delicious! The tacos are not your standard tacos. I had the cauliflower taco and would highly recommend it. El Vez is very loud and dynamic so if you want a quiet spot, this is not it! The prices are good and the service was great. I would definitely go here again when I am in the area.

A Trendy Place for Dinner

By Darla O |

This was my third visit to El Vez. Without reservations the waits can be lengthy, but was able to be seated immediately with reservations on my last visit. A really great atmosphere and menu. We chose the guacamole and chicken enchiladas this visit and was not disappointed.

Colorful spot with solid food

By Fox C |

Fun atmosphere and a menu with lots of options. Tacos were tasty and portions were fair. It was loud, but good for groups and energy.

Cool vibe, average fare

By Desires Elegance |

A very cool vibe inside and a fantastic corner location. However food and drinks were average, and it was very difficult to get the attention of our server who was mostly out of sight and not attentive.

Fun sophisticated Mexican with classy food

By slemishm |

Really busy ( even at 1830 ) with a young professional crowd. But noisy but fun. Not for business meetings but great for celebrations Food is just fantastic. Classy and just perfect. Great cocktails. Good value for high end restaurant

Excellent menu and delicious food

By dede48 |

This restaurant specializes in Latin food with an extensive menu. The food is authentic and delicious at a reasonable price. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I will definitely go back to this restaurant.

good

By Alea |

All in all a good experience. Very nice locations and friendly staff! We had the Tacos for two which is a great option and offers enough food for three people.

Great Food Consistently

By ANTHONY C |

Love me some EL VEZ Fajitas are phenomenal, guacamole is prepared fresh, nacho appetizer is like a Mexican pizza for the table to share. Drinks are good, prior to Covid it was always packed inside at the bar, now it’s still packed but everyone is outside. Try this restaurant for Margaritas, Excellent Food & Service

Good service and food

By Mitul29 |

We love this gem of a place. The atmosphere is great and food is to die for. We got the nachos and the cauliflower tacos. They were made to perfection. The drinks were not watered down and the service was great.

Shrimp tacos

By Archer11 |

The bar is large and dominates the space. We had to wait about an hour to be seated without reservations on a Tuesday night. Delicious and strong margaritas.

Enjoying Philly

By Kimberly A |

Very colorful, nicely appointed restaurant. The chips served were delicious with this machego cheese sauce that was divine. I had the black bean enchiladas, very good served with beans. Waiter was very helpful in menu selection. Try the enchiladas, they all come with rice and beans. Will be back. Best limeade drink. The taste was an Authentic mojito without the alcohol.

LOVED IT!

By BABYKAZ06 |

Place was packed, but well worth it. The drinks, apps, main meal and dessert were all delicious. Call to make reservations!

Popped in here randomly one day with a friend on a visit and found a gem. Very friendly staff, great atmosphere, nice creative drinks and good food. I went 3 times in a week, once alone! It's a great places to mingle with strangers at the bar or celebrate with friends. I'm addicted to their Brussel sprouts!!!!!!

So so

By karenphillylover |

Host was nice.... food was good, not great.... service was bad.... atmosphere was like a loud club. And we came on a Tuesday night. It was super packed and just loud. The server and bus person weren't friendly at all. Not a bad spot, but just nothing special.

Great summer lunch

By travelqueen15 |

We decided to spend weekend in city and headed to el vez for lunch. It was filled but not crowded. Service was right on. Margaritas were awesome. Guacamole is the bomb. Queso fundido is amazing. I had enchiladas trio. Delicious. Tacos are soo good.

Overall good food and expensive drinks!

By Connie C |

Reservations recommended, even for lunch! Nice atmosphere and friendly service. Chips and salsa are not automatic, need to order and it was worth it. One smoky red salsa and one green tomatillo salsa with pico and nice crispy chips. Beware! Ordered two Tangueray gin and tonics as doubles and they were more expensive than the food! My Baja shrimp tacos came with three crispy large shrimp in each of three tacos and they were delicious. My husband had shrimp enchiladas with a tomato briny sauce with small shrimp that he also thought was delicious.

Great Upscale Taco Place

By Shrubbo |

Went here with colleagues our first night in town and had a great time. Or server was super helpful and patiently answered our many questions. The margaritas were excellent, as was the queso. Everyone loved their tacos. It could be a touch too loud in there, but otherwise it was a perfect dinner.

Excellent Mexican food!

By Rich K |

Great bar area. Fast service. The food was excellent and the servers were very attentive and on their game.

Great Food in Philly

By Stephanie M |

I love this place. The decor is super cool and the food is great. It is very busy at times and I see why. If you love margaritas and mexican food, you will love this place.

So Great I had tell TripAdvisor

By BeeLawn |

First time to the Philadelphia El Vez, we regularly enjoy the Lower Manhattan El Vez. From the busy, warm and cozy setting to the helpful Bartender (made the perfect Blood Orange Marg) to the friendly and efficient server (Matthew) to every tasty morsel of food, what a great way to spend an evening. If you enjoy onions and roasted garlic, do start with the La Hoya Guacamole (with the delish house hot sauce on the side) then be certain to order the amazing side of Roasted Brussels Sprouts. Our Enchiladas dishes (Black Bean, Red Chile & Chicken) were top-shelf and filling. Just a terrific experience!

Best Food Ever

By FourBoysMom |

We had delivery for our meal. We ordered a selection of dishes, everything was delicious. We thought it was the best Mexican food ever and we have travelled a lot across the country.

Pricey

By dee2jayz |

Stopped here on Wednesday night before show with my daughter, was very crowded we did have reservations. We both ordered tacos they were all right not great. I ordered blood orange margarita was very good. It came in just a plain generic glass. We both ordered the corn on cob daughter liked hers I thought it was awful didn’t eat it. We ordered the chips with manchego, not impressed, with a tab of 80 bucks for tacos and chips definitely will not be back.

Average, not that great

By TravellingWillbury |

I found the place waaaay too loud and we were rushed in our meal by a sub par server who allowed the wrong app sent to our table as she stood there. We had a hard time ordering because it was so loud. Nachos were kind of weird in presentation. I’ve had much better Mexican in low profile places. Won’t be back.

Fresh and delicious!

By Dave A |

I've been to El Vez several times. Stephen Starr has consistently provided excellent themed restaurants that delight consumers. This is no exception. The food here is amazing, but get reservations ahead of time because it gets booked fast! The blood orange margaritas are a must. The carnitas tacos are simple and delicious if you want something relatively small. The guacamole is some of the best I've had.

Mex with flair

Our serve was so sweet and knowledgeable on the menu! All his recommendations were amazing! We got the guacamole with mango and Chile in it, then the chicken quesadilla, empanadas, and tuna tostadas! It was all so delicious! Would recommend to anyone! Ask for Derek tho he was awesome! So friendly!!!

This place is one of our favorites. The atomosphere is fun, the food & drinks are always consistent and service is great. We particularly like the Nacho Mama, Mahi Tacos & Margaritas. We always have a great time at El Vez, that’s why we keep coming back.

Very good Mexican food, almost like Texas

By GADawgGa |

Very nice restaurant with very good (4.5) Mexican food outside of the SW. The chicken enchiladas were very good. The restaurant is noisy, but we managed that and enjoyed our meals. My wife loved the tortilla soup. The guacamole was excellent.

Lunch

By Andres72423 |

Really good Mexican food. The restaurant has outdoor dining, a dining room and bar seating. The restaurant is dimly lit but it creates a vibe. The food was extremely good, I highly recommend it. For my entree I had the carné asada and my girlfriend had the black bean enchilada. Both meals were prepared really well, the dishes were presented well and tasted even better. My carné asada was cooked at a perfect medium rare. I loved it.

Great place! Just make sure to get a reservation

By Boyd L |

Great atmosphere! Loved the drinks. Just make sure you make a reservation if you don’t sit at the bar. Would recommend the guacamole as well !

I loved El Vez and have recommended it about 10 times since I went there

By Deborah B |

Very authentic style mexican. Great guac and apps, delicious cocktails. I highly recommend the citron margarita! Loved it and can't wait to go again. Oh, also, great music playing on the sound system, neat restrooms, and great wait staff!

Not what I expected.

By Terry M |

Was told by 'locals' that this was one of the best places to eat in Philadelphia. I found the food extremely average and the service somewhat below average.

Great Sunday lunch

By NJTripper |

After visiting bicycle show at Convention Center this was the perfect place for a great lunch. Menu offers nice selection and our group was pleased with tacos, juevos ranchersos, tortilla soup, chopped salad, and guac. Nice selection of cocktails, beer and wine.

My oh my!

By Marisol L |

The food, the drinks, the service were all so incredibly good! They were really busy when we walked in so we sat at the bar but it did not stop them from being so attentive to our needs/wants. Felipe and the rest of the staff were nothing short from amazing. I would highly recommend to anybody that is in the area. We’re from Oklahoma and we will definitely be coming back to Philly and El Vez Ordered- Taco combo for two with a side of corn on the cob and their creamy rice. It was all so DELICIOSO, my husband and I were almost licking the plates. Not only great portions but great food. We also had Churros and they tasted just like they do in Central America. All around, great place! You won’t regret it, promise!

Great service

By Connector759787 |

Recently went for dinner after my daughters graduation at Kimmel Center. We had a wonderful meal, starting with margaritas and guacamole, followed by some great chicken, carne asade and shortrib tacos with generous portion sides of beans and rice. They were all delicious and we finished with some churros with chocolate. The service however was even more outstanding. I mentioned my phone was dying and soon the host came over to say someone overheard and he would charge it for me. The waiters and food servers were all very gracious and polite. A definite stop on my next visit to Philly

Absolutely Excellent!

By Sofia425 |

Everything was excellent! We’ve been coming to El Vez for years, and we’re always impressed by how El Vez consistently provides great service and delicious food in such a busy setting. The guac is awesome. The cocktail menu offers many interesting margaritas and other options. The taco sampler and sweet corn empanadas were a favorite this visit!

Great lunch

We were in Philly visiting our granddaughter who is in college at UA. We enjoyed our meal here. It very good and the service was great. Yes we would recommend.

Well Done

By rrmcgov |

Nice modern decor, including a scattering of photo booths. Contemporary Mexican music sets the mood. Very good food, well prepared and presented. Friendly waitstaff. Expansive bar. The drink menu has two pages of tequila, plus all the usual suspects.

Wonderful Food!

By Bobette B |

Our first time here and it won’t be out last. We spent the day in Philly on a Saturday for my daughters birthday so we made reservations before arriving to the restaurant. We were taken to our table right away. The first 15-20 minutes our service was very slow ( 15 minutes for a drink order) but after that, everything was smooth. That’s the only reason I didn’t give it an excellent review. Steak Quesadillas, Mahi Mahi and Baja Shrimp tacos were all soooo good! If you like corn on the cob, you have to try theirs! We had pitchers of the Pink Cadillac margaritas which we enjoyed! The decor is neat and of course the pink low rider rotating around the bar was the centerpiece of the restaurant. From our experience, I would highly recommend reservations if you can on a Saturday.

Fun but popular so make reservations

By elawson |

We stopped here on a whim at about 1 PM on a Sunday - bad choice because it was packed with a long wait. Then, miraculously, a table opened up but I didn't question it. Our waiter was great - very cheerful even when he was being run ragged. No kids menus but if your child likes Mexican, you should be fine. My daughter and I shared some huevos chorizo tacos and we were both full but she's a very light eater. My son had the chocolate waffle but I'm not sure if they offer their brunch menu every day. My husband loved their guacamole (I'm not a fan of guac so I can't give an opinion). My drink of choice is always a mojito and their guava mojito was AMAZING! My husband took a sip of mine and then ordered one too instead of the margaritas. It's pricey for how much you get though. Well, pricey in the suburbs but for the city, pretty normal. It's loud. Don't expect an intimate dinner or even one where you don't have to shout to your table mates. One thing I didn't like was their bathrooms...down the stairs and kind of gloomy. Pretty typical city experience though.

Good food, portion size could be better for the price range!

We went there with a few friends (who actually picked this spot). Drinks were nice, food we ordered was taco sampler and chicken taco and gaucomole. Tacos were really tasty and full of flavor. Nice ambience especially if you are going in group. Overall flavorful food and good service, though the portion size for the price range could be better.

Delish!

Visited El Ves twice on my business trip yo Philly. Chicken tacos - amazing! Seasoned perfectly. Great, I mean outstanding, guacamole! Decor is cool and stylish too!

Okay. Nothing special

Loud, dark, & average. Don’t get me wrong, we had an okay time but not “very good” which is a 4/5 rating. Best part is outdoor seating. I would not go back.

Absolutely Worth The Visit

Claire made the most amazing espresso martini. The best I’ve ever had! I absolutely love this place. Always fun and enjoyable! Highly recommend.

Went for a work catch with some colleagues whilst in New Jersey. Loved the Tacos and specially the guacamole!! The best I've ever had. Cocktails were fantastic!

i’m not good enough

I can’t really tell you how the restaurant is because there was a two hour wait. I tried for three weeks to get a reservation so this place is one of many that I’m sick of that you can’t get into so you better figure it out, but I will never come here again awful Hostess made no attempts to try anything for two people to go to the bar. I’m sick and tired of this approach by all you places think you’re better than every restaurant.

Holy guacamole this was a great find!

At 6:15pm on a Thursday this place was packed and I was so happy to have made reservations a few weeks ago. The service was great and so was the food. They had a fun margarita menu and many versions of guacamole (could have been a little spicier). We shared the tacos el carbon and loved every bite! Go!

A colleague and I were in Philadelphia and were looking for a place to eat lunch. We search around and saw the reviews on EL Vez. The atmosphere was very good. The Margarita great. The tacos and guacamole were awesome.

Amy was an AMYazing Server!

Great Mexican restaurant with cozy atmosphere. We visited the light show at Macy's and then went to El Vez after for a bite to eat. Our server, Amy, was AMYazing! We are adding a visit here to our yearly light show tradition! We will be back!

Wonderful Take on Mexican Food

By TravelingBubba |

Good venue with some very unusual ideas on Mexican food. Being from Texas, I must admit that many of the dishes on the highly varied menu were unique. Like the bass tacos I had with sweet potato in them. The Margaritas I must admit were fantastic. A bit on the high end price wise, but all in all a great experience.

Great Mexican in Philly

I plan a lot of dinners and this was one of the easiest dinners (25ish people) ever. I worked with Abby on the planning process, she was helpful, friendly and responded in a very timely manner. We chose a pre-planned option for our dinner meeting. Which if you plan these know that you cannot please everyone, but they did it! The food was delicious, there was not one complaint. And the service was impeccable (my bosses words). Wisam was very attentive and friendly, made sure everyone was happy and did not need anything. Dinner was served family style and seemed to keep coming. No one left hungry! Great for parties!

Amazing service

The menu was pre-ordered from business in advance. So at the beginning the service asked what allergies you have. They took my onion allergy serious. I was so happy about to get every sauce separated (sauce is not onion free, every other part of the dish can be done without) so I could decide myself if and how much sauce I would or could handle. The food is great here!!!

Really good Mexican food

The place is super busy in the evening, but after 45 min we got a place. The food was great and was served quickly. Unfortunately, it is quite loud inside.

Nice Luncheon

This is an upscale Mexican Restaurant that did not disappoint. The margaritas and food ordered were great! The service was good. The atmosphere and location are very appealing.
