I went here as part of a food tour in March of 2023. This was our second stop, and also my favorite stop. We had brisket fries, and they were incredible. I could have eaten the whole basket by myself, but I had to share. The brisket was probably the best I’ve ever had.

Oldest bar on the Riverwalk, supposedly an old speakeasy, so it has a cool feel to it, but the service was slow and the food was overcooked.

This place reminds me of NOLA. Old dark and good. Ordered a couple beers and Chile relleno and it was good. Nice Panko battered also had the steak, it was so so. A place that I will come back to

We stopped by for a cocktail on the small patio. The drinks were great and I love the atmosphere. It's an amazing old building, a must see! The menu and food being served looked fantastic! The longest wooden bar in Texas is super cool!

We had a group of 10 friends meet downstairs (loved this more quiet, intimate space) for a birthday celebration which included some of the Tavern's signature drinks and charcuterie boards. Memorable time!

This is a must go to in San Antonio! The house made French Onion dip with chips is amazing. And the Burger......just order it. You won't be disappointed. Oh and ask about Albert 😉

We decided to try the tavern since it was right outside our hotel. It was great! The drinks were very good with a large selection of beer and also reasonably priced. The food was as well. My sons Filet was delicious and cooked perfectly and my soup was very tasty and the shrimp cocktail was nice & fresh. Service was fantastic as well even though we had to order at the bar there was never an issue to get assistance. The only negatives were it was very dark inside which makes it tough on older eyes and the TV kept locking up during football!

Did not get the chance to eat here this trip but did hang out for a bit at the bar. Awesome place and vibe. Maybe next time will have the chance to fully enjoy.

We reviewed the menu online before we went. They offered a good mix for our family. When we got there and view the menu on our phones after scanning the code on the table we noticed that most of the things we came here were off the menu. They only had one sandwich available and two plates available. When we ordered sides, the two we ordered weren't available. Not sure why they operate like this but I would not go back eventhough the food we ordered was good, but it was not what we wanted to order.

Spent a few pleasant hours one evening for drinks and dinner. Menu offered many unique cocktails and server was extremely well versed on the subject and seemed keen to talk about it. Really enjoyed a variation on a Manhattan, as well as a local IPA. Food was very good (deep fried homemade pickles - yum!). Burger and fries really good. So dark inside, however, that my eyes never adjusted to limited light. Longest bar was impressive. Cool vibe; nice spot; walkable from anywhere downtown.

We are day drinkers, and tried the esquire mid day great service in a laid back friendly environment. You could clearly tell that the bartenders truly enjoyed their jobs and visiting with customers when time allowed. Was really impressed by how clean it was. Thanks for the great time.

Great ambience, especially out on the view balcony in back which overlooks the Riverwalk. But, the food we ordered (tortilla soup, fried pickles, and cheeseburger) were mediocre. Recommend just getting a drink here.

Good beer and good food. But there are no longer any vegan options. They should put the falafel back on the me h. Otherwise it’s good.

We always visit here when we are in San Antonio. Love the ambience. Food is good too. They have a speak easy on weekends.

I and my colleagues really enjoyed the food and cocktails at Esquire Tavern. We had wanted to see the bar in the basement but arrived on a Monday when that bit was closed.

This establishment, really hit the mark..It All started right when walled in, the staff, were very welcoming, please have a seat, wherever that I would like, the bar was entirely full at the time, so I instead a lovely server approached me, and offered a booth to me. wonderful service, Even if you are someone who is more pandemic concerned, the booths were very much sectioned off with plexiglass on top of each one(if you needed).. there's plenty of space upstairs, which includes a little patio for some outside seating.. I ordered an appetizer, called Deviled eggs, just wonderful, very tasty and flavored excellent..to drink, I had Topo Chico Sparkling water,(no alcohol), but that's a personal choice...next, my entree is a Pulled Pork Sandwich with Fries, but not just any fries, these fries were based, and set with a Cumin Flavor and seasoning as well..The total bill was just above 35.00,but well worth the money and value, this location is on the River Walk, but very easy to get to, and the atmosphere is fun and has a wonderful history to it as well...There are plenty of choices for eats on the River Walk, and this one is a game changer, and a must do... thanks again...

I’ve been to the Esquire a few times now, mostly for the drinks. Which are stellar. They have a small outside patio overlooking the Riverwalk which I’m partial to, but only 4 tables make getting one a unicorn. The inside though is quite roomy and the bar goes on for miles. Where they failed me was after the drinks. We ordered lunch, a simple pulled pork sandwich and a shrimp wrap. Took over an hour to get a really simple meal. And everything other than what you specifically ordered is a la carte. So the pulled pork Sammy sat on its bun alone in the middle of a big plate. The shrimp wrap turned out to be a lettuce wrap with shrimp in it. Messy and not very filling. The description on the menu should be different. Our server was wonderful and kept the delish cocktails coming but we won’t be eating here again. Only drinking.

Food was pretty good, but our service was really slow. Not sure what was going on, but we watched people that I arrived after us get their food and finish eating it before we got our food. And our waiter was nowhere to be found to ask about. When we finally got it, everything tasted good.

This restaurant has delicious food and our server was attentive. Everyone in our party was pleased with their dinner selection and I thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp and grits entree. The atmosphere is on the dimly-lit side and the place can get pretty loud when crowded. Overall, we had a great time!

We recently visited the Esquire Tavern on the River Walk in San Antonio and had a mostly pleasant experience. My wife and I both ordered the BLTs featuring thick-sliced millionaire bacon, which was flavorful and aromatic, complemented perfectly by fresh lettuce and tomato. Unfortunately, a few pieces of bacon in my wife's sandwich were overcooked, giving them a beef jerky-like consistency. Our drinks were enjoyable—my wife had a mojito, and I had an old fashioned, both well-made. Service was initially slow due to a mix-up with our server, causing us to wait about 15-20 minutes before our order was taken. However, the staff made up for it by comping our drinks. Overall, Esquire provided good food and drinks with a minor hiccup in service, earning it a solid recommendation.

Had a few friends and family visiting from Ohio and decided to grab a bite to eat and catch up at this restaurant. Oscar, our waiter was very helpful and was patient as one of our group was deaf, so it took a little more time communicating, etc. All the drinks ordered by the group were enjoyed and one surprise was a Puppy Chow Stout beer which was very delicious...very easy to drink, a bit too easy ;-p I would definitely recommend this place...they take your temperature before letting you in and spacing is more than adequate to abide by CDC guidelines.

A visit to San Antonio isn’t complete without a trip to The Esquire Tavern. The establishment has been around since 1933. It has a really friendly vibe. Mina, our server, was super and made wonderful recommendations. My wife had Shrimp and Grits and declared it to be as good as she’s ever had (caution, the dish has a little heat to it). I had the Bison Burger with everything on it. I ordered it medium and it was cooked perfectly. It was DELICIOUS! They have an extensive drink/cocktail menu. We had reservations at 5 and were in and out in an hour.

This place has an awesome, unique drink menu. We loved it! It was a perfect little stop on a chilly day, just off the river walk.

This place was recommended by a friend for their chicken tortilla soup, and we were not disappointed. The lunch crowd felt like locals, even though we were in the middle of the touristy River Walk district. Great local beers on tap and great service!

It looks very small from the outside but looks can be deceiving. The Tavern itself is not that wide but it is very long. I cannot speak for the food as I did not eat but the food I did see looked great. The bar is very long and the atmosphere hopping however, the bar stools are miserable. Maybe it's done on purpose to keep people moving the chairs turning over--either way they are miserable. I would have stayed longer and ordered another drink but I was miserable so I headed to the next watering hole.

Love this place for a solo dinner at the bar. Service has always been good. Good selection of cold beer. And darn good food at a reasonable price. Love the dark and cool vibe.

Been visiting San Antonio for over 20 years and finally visited Esquire Tavern. Arrived around 9:30 p.m. last Tuesday evening for a nightcap. Bar was lively for a Tuesday evening. Upcoming sitting at the bar, were promptly told by two different staff members that it was last call. Huh? However, the kitchen was still preparing food. What business owner prohibits business this way, especially after the last two years? A party of 6 arrived after us along with a few other people trickling in and were all told the same thing. No business school I am aware of would turn away business. Would love to give this place another chance but it will be awhile as there are plenty of other bars who will welcome our business and money. Y'all definitely missed the mark last week!

Getting into San Antonio around dinner time, we were looking for something easy and nearby. We were staying at the Drury Plaza on the Riverwalk and the Esquire was right across the street. The atmos is one of dark wood and low lighting. We were seated in a booth right across from the bar. The menu was accessed via QR code. Plenty of drink options but a pretty short wine list. The food menu was also limited, but this isn’t surprising during the pandemic. I ordered a rye old-fashioned before my Pork Schnitzel. The wife had a glass of Chardonnay with her burger. The food was good and well presented. The place was pretty busy for a Thursday night, which is usually a good sign. Recommended

The bar is really cool. About 50-60 feet long. We were seated in a booth in the back. Service is slow, it was 90 minutes between the time we sat down and finally received our entree. Ordered an empanada appetizer. 20 minutes later, server said they were out. Food was decent. Had the brisket sandwich. Good, Chile Salt Fries were good. I would go back to drink but not eat.

The flavors of the food just very satisfying. Your palette will thank you. Everything was good. Definitely go again. Has been good for years.

Interesting place to stop in and see but I wouldn't stay to eat. The menu is very limited with no vegetarian or lighter options aside from the house salad. The food is heavy on grease and pretty uninspired.

It is a central and very cozy place in general. The menu is basic but for a quick lunch or dinner, it is a good option. The bison burger is excellent and the French fries are pretty good.

Food more artful and subtly created than most places with southwestern menus. Same goes for ambiance with lots of attention to detail. Beers on tap all Texan. If you are looking to chow down and fill your belly then go elsewhere. If you want a nice setting and like to pay attention to taste and presentation then go here.

Found the Esquire Tavern through TripAdvisor while on vacation.....historical bar with a really long wooden bar. Cool and dark! They have an extensive cocktail list and a food menu. The first time we went, we just had cocktails and the shrimp toast! YUM!!! And then we went back on our last night for dinner....frito pie and the big red empanada. Both were really tasty though the empanada sauce was HOT! We liked that the Tavern was on a quieter corner of the Riverwalk and not so crowded and touristy at least on the inside. Highly recommended!

Went here for drinks before dinner. Snagged a great table—right on the balcony overlooking the riverwalk. But no one came. One server walked past us 5 times—never even looked our way. I have a problem with rotten customer service, but my boyfriend is more tolerant. Finally even he said , “if one more server walks past us and ignores us, we’re leaving”. Sure enough, we got ignored. Too bad-I was in a great mood and ready to tip well, but do not tolerate indifference.

We stopped in around lunchtime due to the history of the place. We were not disappointed. The bar was incredible. Old school vibe. Classic rock playing. My wife enjoys all kinds of ciders. The bartender gave her an excellent suggestion of one they carry but is rarely in stock because the staff enjoys them so much after they close. It was quite good. I had the Nuestra margarita because it’s one of their signature drinks and I needed to cleanse the memory of the one I had at Margaritaville from my head. This one did not disappoint. Excellent. We did not have food, but great visit nonetheless.

Esquire is always a must-do place on our list when we come for our yearly seminar in SA. The drinks NEVER disappoint - ever. I’ve ordered the most random drinks on the menu and they are always so well-crafted. Amazing. Our waitress this time wasn’t the friendliest, but that’s okay she was prompt and knowledgeable. The location is amazing and so easy to find from all downtown hotels. We didn’t eat any food, but it always looks amazing. It’s cold and dark and the best bar in SA, in my opinion. A MUST VISIT.

I don’t think they have a full kitchen staff, but took an hour to get our hamburgers. Food was good, but cold. I would only go and sit at bar for drinks and find food elsewhere

This place is terrible!!! Walking in it is dark and dingy but could get past that. The staff was friendly but no amount of good hospitality can make up for food you can not even eat. It was difficult to even order since everything we asked for they were out of, but finally deciding on available options I was shocked. Grilled chicken breast had no flavor and felt like cardboard after chewing for an eternity I ended up spitting it out. One dish was not what we even ordered but it was ok. I had ginger beer and it actually made me feel sick, it was like sucking on a knob of raw ginger and I could not drink it at all and I drink extra spicy/strong ginger beer every day so something was seriously wrong, it was even thick and cloudy looking. After 2 sips it literally brought tears to my eyes and burned my sinuses and throat.

The Esquire Tavern is a great place to relax, enjoy a meal, and escape the heat. We both had the buffalo burger and fries. Everything was tasty, the portions were perfect and the service was excellent. It was so nice to enjoy a meal at a unique restaurant and not at a chain!

One of the best places to eat on the Riverwalk!! Food and appetizers were delicious. The atmosphere is spot on….drinks were excellent.

The food may have been fine, but we were seated about 8:20 pm. Our server was busy so the host got us a drink. GREAT! Finally at 9:13, we flagged down the host to order food and were told we were 13 minutes too late. Restaurant hours are posted as open until 10 pm. No one said a word about our dinner choices not being available after 9 pm. All we were told was that our frustration was understood...but no one said they were sorry or tried to do anything to help us. I've waited tables before and don't understand how a staff could be so cold to a customer. TERRIBLE.

San Antonio is a special city that is jammed with tourists. There are many places to go for a drink, but I am amazed at the number that find this place. It is always a jumping spot on the river and easy to find. The drinks are good. The staff friendly. There is a " old time" bar ambiance that feels very homey. We like this stop.

We loved coming to the Esquire Tavern. The place just has good vibes, and they were playing a lot of fun old school music like Boston and ELO when we went. This spot has been around since the 1930s and has a gorgeous long wooden bar, wooden booths, dim lighting with lanterns on the tables - very classic, like stepping back in time. We came late at night after dinner, so we just had drinks and their plantain chips with chimichurri sauce. The chips were a great accompaniment to our drinks; the chimichurri had more heat than we were expecting. Drinks were good. Service was good and friendly. Seems like it could get packed at peak time, but we didn't have to wait for a booth. They have a lot of craft cocktails on the menu. You may want to take a peek before you go - lots of creative combinations. They also serve real food if you're up for lunch or dinner. Great atmosphere with people of all ages having a good time. We'd definitely come back the next time we're in town.

We stopped in for Happy Hour. Drinks were expensive regardless of $3 discount on limited selections. The drink I inquired about, not in the selection, was nearly 3x the price I paid at Mi Tierra in Market Square. The appetizer, two shrimp toast were phenomenal, but at $12. Side of floppy fries $4. An unexceptional bison burger was $16; bottle of Miller Lite $4; a cheeseburger $12. It was so dark, I had to use the cell phone flashlight to read the menu. Very noisy, but it’s a bar, right? Server Deuley was great. That being said, for the $52 tab, I wish we had gone elsewhere.

We had empanadas a Waldorf salad and a fried seafood platter. The seafood platter was delicious, the empanadas were good but the Waldorf salad had too much red cabbage and not enough apple. We sat outside on the balcony which was nice and service was helpful. The balcony is quite tight though. The cocktails and beer were good.

The food was fantastic! We got a reservation before hand so there was no wait and it was really cool to see the bar and all the history the building holds. I tried the ginger beer which was fantastic and had the burger and fries which was some of the best food I’ve genuinely ever had. Would definitely recommend going with family and friends!

Lovely drink menu, very popular and busy bar. We had great service though and excellent drinks, will definitely be back! Would recommend!

When I say upscale the cost is not much more but the portions are smaller. So it is probably a great fine for some people; in fact many people given the ratings. I enjoyed the service, the local beer and the dishes we ordered. It is just if you were expecting one of those great big giant plates where you take another meal home with you, this is not the place.

Came here the other day to try their loaded fries and check out the historic bar. The river level door was locked and it wasn’t welcoming. The location is kind of bad because it’s on the end of the river walk where it starts to die down. They made a huge deal about my kid being there even though they are allowed to sit in the booths. The place was totally empty so what did they care? I asked for the fries from the appetizer menu and I got a small side of (unloaded) fries. When I told the bartender that I meant to order the loaded fries he gave a sarcastic laugh and said “you ordered fries”. Ok well maybe he should have clarified since I’m not an expert on their menu. Not sure how 3 people were supposed to share a small side of fries. Anyway, super rude reaction from the guy.

Had someone tell us this used to be a major dive scene and you can totally see that. Bartenders are great with lots of interesting drinks just be aware they don’t carry some brands you may expect. Small patio outside if you don’t want to be in. Lots of dark bar seating.

This not a restaurant I would recommend. First of all just getting to a door which would allow you entry was ridiculous. You cannot enter from the street, you have to go to the end of the block down stairs to the Riverwalk, then back up the restaurant stairs. We opted to sit on the balcony because it was a little too noisy. The waiter came, took our order, brought the order and we never saw him again. We had to go back inside to get our tab so we could pay. Oh, you can exit through the door on the street side. The food we got, not very good.

Fun and interesting place with a limited but interesting menu. Had the fried bologna and it was delicious. Obviously understaffed, like every other restaurant/bar, our server handled our party of 7 as well as she could with a smile and a positive attitude. I would definitely go back to Esquire the next time I am in SA.

The Esquire tavern was a unique and cozy find. It had an old world tavern feel but with unique modern food with incredible flavor. The staff was very helpful. They adhered to all COVID guidelines: temperature checks, distancing patrons when seating them, masks always worn, and sanitizer everywhere and strongly encouraged. On top of that the staff was friendly and helpful and the food incredible. We would absolutely visit again.

Phenomenal meal at this awesome bar right on the riverwalk. Had the chicken fried steak, and it was huge and tasty. I would definitely eat here again!!

A really nice classic pub that we accessed at the end of the River Walk, just past the building works that were going on. It's also accessible from the street. A really long bar with lots of different beers. The food looked good too!

We were really looking forward to this. We made a reservation and showed up on time. We were quickly seated and then we waited, and waited, and waited. After noticing many other tables seated after us being helped we questioned the waitress. We were told that since we sat ourself we should expect a delay. I called over the hostess who sat us and in the period of 15 minutes claimed she didn’t seat us. All that aside we were given a menu which had more then half the items crossed off. We settled on the fish and chips along with the pork schnitzel. The pork was great (which is why it gets 2 stars) but the fish was soggy and slightly underdone. The fries were also cold and soggy. The do have a great bourbon list so if you want to drink it’s a good place to go. But the food is definitely an afterthought.

Absolutely delicious dinner! Superb service from Oscar! Fun drinks and right on the riverwalk! Conveniently located!

Stopped by the Esquire around 9:00 on a weeknight. Plenty of seating for food. The beer was good, as you’d expect. And a very good menu. I ordered a falafel, which probably wasn’t the best choice. It was fine. Nothing special about the falafel itself. The baba ganoush was pretty tasteless—nothing Smokey or eggplant is about it. The heirloom tomatoes were pretty good for greenhouse tomatoes. The pickled cauliflower was nice and nice carrots and cucumbers. Friendly and helpful waitstaff in a lovely setting. You could do a lot worse and the menu does give you lots of choices.

This is right on the Riverwalk. Drinks were good and bartender friendly. We only had drinks, so I can't say how the food is. The place was packed for a Monday night

We stopped in here for a drink to get out of the cold. Very nice place for a meal or drink. They have the longest wooden bar in Texas! I liked the ambiance of this place, it felt cozy and quiet.

You wouldn’t know it from the outside but the inside is so cool—like a wonderful step back in time. Great hospitality and great drinks. See pic for the cool bar and the decor inside. It’s right on the Riverwalk but parking must be in a nearby garage/lot. Wonderful place to relax.

We visited The Esquire Tavern during our trip to San Antonio. Daniel was great! He was very attentive and shared some info with us about the city. This tavern has the BEST Moscow mules we’ve ever had. They do not use ginger beer but instead they make their own mix with real ginger and real citrus juices.

We had excellent drinks and beer both upstairs and downstairs at the Esquire. We did not eat there any of the three times we went, but it was a great place to hang out in spite of nearby construction, and I thought the special cocktails menu had some really good drinks on it. The upstairs has the long bar and downstairs is very moody with dim lighting and oil lamps. I've never been in an opium den, but it kind of looked like what I might picture.

We popped here for a couple of cocktails while walking the river walk.. it is a really nice place with a great atmosphere... the staff were pleasant and welcoming.. we sat outside upstairs looking out over the river walk which was fab! The cocktails there were very nice although we thought a little bit pricey... we couldn’t afford to spend too long on here which was a shame.. I would definitely recommend a visit to this tavern though if ever in San Antonio...

Neat atmosphere good service and good drinks. Historic venue with longest bar in Texas. We sat on patio and overlooked the Riverwalk. Went twice during our stay.

This is a difficult restaurant to get to, due to construction both at the street level entrance and the river level entrance. But it is worth going to, for the food, mixologist prepared cocktails, and to see the decor that dates from 1933. They also have the longest wooden bar in TX! The food was quite good, everything prepared using local meat and fresh ingredients. The menu isn't huge, but locals like this place a lot. That tells you something, doesn't it?

Amazing bar with great service, our friends loves his old fashioned and he said he had the best one ever made by Daniel. Daniel said the secret was using rye whiskey as apposed to bourbon. Great place to sit and spend a couple of hours over a drink and catch up with our friends.

Oldest taverns in San Antonio! Good food—recommend making reservation ahead of time! Apparently a bar in the basement you can go downstairs-tho it’s closed on Sun and Mondays so we weren’t able to see it. Try the Tx onion dip with chips to start, chile rellenos or Cajun beef stew with a glass Viva blonde ale! All pretty big entrees so we split two with app for 3 of us and were full!😋

This restaurant was recommended by our Drury Inn and Suites Hotel. It was right across the River from us in a quiet section. We sat out on their balcony both times and enjoyed the ambiance and food which is made from scratch on site. Good draft beers! We were able to hop on a river boat tour just a block away.

The website menu is still the 2019 pre-covid menu. Current menu is a lot smaller and less diverse. Fried pickles and chili salt fries are good.

First off I am a longtime fan of the Esquire Tavern. I am also a local patron who has been there and recommended it numerous times in person and in writing. However, the last time I was there may be the real *last time* I go there due to an egregious personal affront to my common sense regarding a simple Bloody Mary order. This happened on the day of the Longhorn Parade downtown at the start of rodeo season. At the conclusion of the parade it was right about noon time and my date and I wanted a cocktail. We arrived and I ordered two *double* Bloody Mary’s because I like the ratio better between vodka and the mix and because we were only having one, I asked him to close out the check with the drinks. We were sitting at the bar and the bartender was very nonchalant to begin with, not that he needs to be excited to see every new customer, and he brought our two drinks and silently walked away. When I looked at my check, he had charged me for four Bloody Mary’s, instead of two simple double drinks. Now a double means two measures in the same glass, not two full on drinks—I did not invent the term! We did politely bring this to his attention, upon which he unleashed a torrent of blather, trying to prove himself right in which he invoked the volume of using a different glass, his insistence that we were getting twice the amount of mix and garnish and my personal favorite, “this is how we do it here.“ We tried to have a civil conversation, seriously we are not the ugly patrons, but he pulled out a full on “well, it’s no skin off my nose if I asked the manager to come over and take the drinks off our bill, if that’s so important to you,” as if we were trying to scam him! Again, stating “this is how we always do it.” We paid for four full drinks and received two theoretically with a double shot. This is a perfect example of the Riverwalk businesses that have separate pricing for tourists. Even though we told him we were locals, he didn’t care. So, if you are a tourist, you should be wary of tourist pricing on the Riverwalk.

We loved the food we got. Everyone was very friendly and drinks was the best we got in San Antonio. The service was excellent.

Thought the Esquire would be a nice alternative to tex mex food ( you can only eat so many tacos ) Wasn’t aware of it’s history either which made it all the more interesting. Front of house lady was lovely .. got us a table in no time overlooking the Riverwalk.. unfortunately after that it went downhill .. Drinks were slow to come then the main course arrived with our starter . I was told this was a tavern and things arrive when there ready … really ? My last course was also a starter as our server forgot to order it in the first place. We had ordered another round of drinks and they managed to bring me the wrong beer .. I drank it as I couldn’t bear the wait for the replacement. Should’ve been a nice evening.. it wasn’t.. Shame ..

The manager was very rude from the beginning. We walked in with a agua fresca and were told by a waiter we could not have the drink inside. He did say we could set it outside and come in, so we did. We went to sit at the bar, and were very rudely told by the manager she would be throwing the drink away. I understand policies, but the proper thing would have been to ask us to throw the drink away or letting us know we couldn’t keep it there.

We LOVE Esquire Tavern. It’s a must-stop when on the San Antonio Riverwalk. Their martini’s and Pimm’s Cup are my favorite along with the Shrimp Toast!! To DIE For!! Try it, you won’t be disappointed!

Wonderful food and service. Atmosphere is very nice. This bar is 100 years old and very rustic and charming. Seafood platter is amazing and the burger 🍔 was fantastic too!

The waiter wasn’t nice to us. And form the very small menu they didn’t have 4 of the dishes we wanted. The food was not good. Greasy and bad presented.

Low lighting, good drinks, comfy booths. Great place for after work drinks or a nice catch-up session with friends/family. A great place near the river

Great drinks, great staff, great food in this cool spot dripping with period decor. Dark, brooding and very very cool.

Food was just ok service fair. Very loud nice decor and atmosphere Had fish chips chips cold small fish too heavy breaded

We stopped in mid afternoon. We got there a little before 3 (start of happy hour) so the server was kind enough to put in an order for the lunch special before it ended at 3, and put then put in our drinks after 3 so we'd get the happy hour price. Drinks were great. We didn't know the history of the place until after, but the bar and ceiling from way back when were really cool. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and if we make it back to San Antonio, this is the one place I KNOW we will return to.

Had dinner here with my husband and two early 20’s teenage boys. Food was good, drinks were a bit weak, seat was comfortable. Only issue I had was the AC was blasting and I was under the vent.

On a recent trip, a local told us about this establishment. The bar was a sight to see. The longest wooden bar in Texas! The staff was friendly, and the bar was full but not loud. An enjoyable visit!

Lacklustre rude waitress complained we sat at a table having walked in directly off the river walk and sat at nearest table (no wait staff or greeters in this area). If you don’t want people to sit down from that entrance either put a greeter there or lock the gate …

We really had high hopes for this place. Craft cocktails, off-menu, sounded delightful. Whether you’re at the downstairs or up in the main bar area, you may find yourself disappointed. We are here on a business trip and the staff will make you feel like you’re wearing wife beaters ( we were wearing collared shirts in business attire). You honestly could not feel more unwelcome, if you were upstairs at the main bar, and there are enough seats, the bartenders will mention immediately that you need to move closer to the bar area, so as to not interrupt the servers behind you( I completely understand this, but we already were sucked up to the bar). Very little attention was paid to us and we felt that we were a “one drink and out” guest to the staff. The cocktails are good, but with the unwelcome feeling, we will not return. If you’re looking for a quasi-upscale place, just order a Lonestar and you will fit right in to this “wanna be” craft cocktail bar.

My friend is from Texas and recommended this tavern because of its history. Our bartender told us this is the original bar, 109 feet long and he explained the history of the establishment. You can see where the owners kept the old wallpaper and some fixtures. It was so interesting listening to the tavern's history. We enjoyed Texan beer, Shiners and a local red wine, Skeleton Key, processed in Fredericksburg, Texas. Got the chance to chat

This place deserves 5 stars. The staff and food were phenomenal. The Lamb Lettuce wraps were off the chart especially when neither the owner or the chef were Greek. If you are looking for a quiet place then this isn't for you. Great selection of Texas beers also.

Read about this place, as one of the best places for To Go margaritas, before visit to San Antonio. We decided to stay for the dim, relaxed, comfortable ambiance. There's a drink on the menu called doxycycline, that some might get it. Or, Vibramycin, for those old enough, So I had to order it. Was pretty good. We liked the place, and would be regulars, if we were locals.

Bar dating from the end of prohibition, magnificent wooden counter, large selection of alcohol. Normal prices for well-measured cocktails. A great evening experience.

Excellent food but very bad service and the restaurant was basically dead. Took almost 20 minutes for a drink. And the waitress only came to our table once. The food did make up for it. But there is room for improvement. We notice no tables did the server really come over. You could tell they were struggling. The waitress mentioned them having a new system.

Our local cousin said you have to go here - longest wooden bar bar in TX. It’s very cool - opened in 1933, but decorated like 1880s feel

What a fantastic find!!!! and it's the first Riverwalk Bar/Restaurant establishment - 1946! History is preserved here. The food and drinks are fantastic! Be mindful that there is a lot of constuction right now in the area and that you need to enter from the street entrance. It's located on the opposite of the Riverwalk from La Mansion Hotel. It's worth the effort and your time!

This is a beautiful bar area with dark wood and glass. The drinks prepared were phenomenal. I wasn't sure what I wanted and the bartender created a drink that was delicious based on a few of my favorite flavors. Very attentive service. We ordered fries and fried plantains to snack on. They were both very greasy and I would not order again. I would visit again in the future but try sitting at the little balcony patio over looking the river.

This is the best burger place I’ve ever tried in Houston. I tried a Bison burger with extra jalapinos which was fantastic. Wish I can come back later again :)

Wandered into the Esquire Tavern after hiking 9 miles along the Mission Trail in San Antonio. We got a riverside table and had frozen margaritas and delicious fries. One drink and we felt ready to hike another mile or two, but opted to order another round. Our waitress was attentive and helpful and we will be coming back. The tavern has a wooden bar over 100 feet long. It’s a bit dark with that familiar whiskey aroma when you enter. The servers and patrons were very friendly and we enjoyed our libations .

We had to wait for over ten minutes for service at the bar. Bartender seemed angry at the world and was rude. Short poured a cocktail and was called out on it, and we just walked out. Riverboat tour guide pointed the place out so we decided to go check it out. Big mistake. Having to flag down bartender for service and then be treated badly not our kind of place.

We were not happy at all with our recent dinner at the Esquire Tavern. The house salad was just lettuce and the $9 Kale salad was edible but not very good. The red grape, roasted peanut, golden raisin chutney, peanut vinaigrette mixture just didn't work well in my opinion. My wife had the Wildcat burger with a side of collard greens. She did not like the burger at all and didn't eat much of the collard greens because it was loaded with too much bacon. I made the mistake of getting the Frito Pie . I honestly thought there would be some decent measure of chili in there. It came out loaded with too much sour cream and onion dip and hardly any chili. We didn't like anything we ate and spent over $60 for dinner. The beer was good though!

On a hot, humid day in San Antonio, we stopped at the Esquire Tavern for a cold brew with lunch. Typical tavern food but a fascinating long bar and quite the history. Reuben sandwich, made in-house, was flavorful but too much gristle … will get the burger next time. Wife got the Chulapita and really liked it. Worth the visit just to see the bar and say you have been there.

Victor and Brandon spent time with us, answering our questions. Food was scrumptious and the history engaging! Love the mascot on the bar!

Wonderful place to visit with the largest selection of natural tequilas. We will be back. Service and knowledge of tequila was excellent

Visited here 2x recently while in town. Lunch was very good, not crowded(!). Service was friendly and attentive. Came back for drinks on the back deck Friday night. Enjoyed the drinks and atmosphere. If you want seating on an evening with good weather - make reservations! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This was the first bar we visited on our trip. This seems to be the only place locals go on the river walk “strip” so you know it is legit. We stumbled in during a Happy Hour which was a super duper deal on drinks and appetizer food. The bartender was nice and put time into making our drinks which were refreshing. The bar patrons were friendly and overall we had an enjoyable time.

Building is apportioned to older western days. It houses a 100 ft long bar (said to be the longest in Texas), leather or leather look alike ceiling tiles, and antiqued walls. Lunch menu is fairly simple but our serve, Ramiro, recommended the Bison Burger, so we each went for one, with fries. Burgers were GOOD. Fries a bit greasy. I also had a Mexican Coke A Cola, which I had never tasted, and it was also GOOD. Sercice was also GOOD.

I give this place two stars, only because of our server, Chris. The kitchen staff apparently unrolled a new menu with kitchen staff tonight, and we waited close to an hour for terrible food that we left half eaten. Although upon reading other reviews now, it seems like this was a line of BS. There was a table of fourteen next to us, which seemed to be getting the best service in the house, but even they had to wait for a while. Chris at least came in and checked on us and made sure we had drinks. My husband talked to the manager about the food service, but because we had unfortunately paid for a $120 meal (which should have been $80 max) we could not get any sort of refund. Although the manager tried to take care of the bill, the best he could offer was a voucher on our next visit, but we’re from out of town, and it’s not likely we’ll be back.

The food and drinks were delicious! The mock-tail on the menu sounded great, and they were able to make it for me with alcohol. Thank you Danny H for making a great ambiance for my friends. We’re definitely coming back.

All the staff were beyond rude!!! We have gone to the Esquires Tavern every time we have been in San Antonio for the last 5 years We will never go there again. We will never recommend to anyone again! Such a bad experience!!! So sad!

Our hotel recommended this restaurant. The hamburgers were fantastic. The customer service was not. When we walked in, we got a greeting the bartender that was friendly. We told him we wanted a to go order. He told us to go to the end of the bar. The next guy (possibly a manager) met Us (and was not as friendly as the bartender who greeted us) and pointed to a table but never elaborated. I figured a server was coming over with a takeout menu. When that never happened I went to the bar. The bartender told us to order from the QR code. Our table didn’t have 1. The manager pointed to another table. We moved to that table, and tried ordering but the system wasn’t working. I had to approach the frosty staff again for help. The manager didn’t really talk just entered my order like I was annoying. I felt like because I walked in with a child and wanted takeout, I wasn’t their ideal customer. Yet, we didn’t require a lot of effort and left 20 percent tip on a to go order. While waiting for our order, the bartender kindly brought us water without asking, and our delicious food arrived quickly. The decor is nice, the place was clean and the bartender was friendly. I’d recommend this place to eat and drink at. Hyatt Riverwalk recommended it and I can see why.

Good service, very good food and fabulous view of the River Walk from our terrace seating. It was hot, but fans were running offering a decent breeze. We enjoyed the lamb burger, steak and a giant basket of so-so fries.

Very interesting eclectic bar/restaurant. Service decent but when your party of 4 asks for certain drinks and 3 of 4 your don't have the products to make them, one included a Signature drink that's pretty poor. Would consider giving it another visit as we hear the food is excellent

Accessing the Esquire can be tricky, as they are doing construction on that part of the Riverwalk - but you can enter from Commerce street or by climbing the stars from the Riverwalk. What you will find is a dark but interesting old time bar - the longest wooden bar in Texas. Great selection of spirits, wine and beers - including several local craft brews. We had jalapeño rellenos (appetizer), kale salad with grilled chicken and the chili relleno (stuffed with pulled pork and cheese). Both were delicious at moderate portion size and price. Our host and server were both very attentive and friendly. Reservations are recommended. We went initially around 4 and it was fairly quiet. When we returned at 7 PM for dinner, the place was packed (Wednesday). If it is not too hot, consider a table out on the patio overlooking the Riverwalk. It is quieter than inside and a really nice atmosphere. Overall, a not to be missed place on the Riverwalk if you like a good bar oozing with character - one that also happens to have excellent food!

We stopped by a couple of afternoons during our week in San Antonio. We enjoyed the first day talking with the bartender, Justin, and he told us a lot about the city and recommended two great restaurants that we ended up going to. The drinks were good and really loved the historic atmosphere of the tavern.

We enjoyed the ambience, food and service so much that we visited Esquire 3 times in the 3 days that we stayed in San Antonio! We enjoyed the extensive list of craft beers and also the food menu, including the beet salad, the chicken tortilla soup and a number of the main courses. You can choose to sit outside and enjoy views of the riverwalk or grab a booth in the atmospheric bar. The cocktails are also excellent! Alex was the waiter that served us on each of the visits to the tavern and he was excellent - attentive and good advice on the range of beers and also the food menu. Thanks for making our stay so enjoyable.

Visited here late on a Friday evening in November. We split a pimento cheese sandwich. The fries (and dipping sauces) were stellar. Really good beer selection and cozy atmosphere. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Drink a margarita! It’s a real one, none of that fake mix, sweet & sour stuff! Hubs and I sat and drank in a booth for a few hours. Atmosphere was great. It does have an old musty smell when you walk in but it’s an old building. We got use to it quick. Service was great as well! Definitely recommend.

My party goes to San Antonio every year for the past 6 years. This year we had a party of 6. We decided to eat at Esquire Tavern being we hit up a lot of the other restaurants. We were warned that the food is good but the staff could be really rude. They were correct!! I ordered a hurricane as a beverage. It came FULL of ice! To the rim. I got 1 sip of beverage out of my straw. I told the waitress (who agreed and very nice) that this was nuts and how unhappy I was being served a glass of ICE. I told her that i wanted another drink and did not expect to pay for a straw full of beverage. She said she would ask the bartender. She came back and said because I took a sip (the entire drink was a sip) I need to pay for it. I said that was wrong and asked to speak to a manager. A few minutes later the manager came over with an attitude asking who had a problem. I showed him the glass of ice and told him that they said I had to pay with the thought he would have enough business sense to see the glass of ice and take the drink off the bill. Instead he rudely said that's how we make them and he will not remove the charge. My entire party was floored at his response and rudeness. The other hurricane drinks had half the ice as mine did. The waitress said in the beginning that they usually done make them and doesn't have enough ingredients to make a second round. Turned out did not have enough ingredients for one round. All in all the manager ruined the entire evening for our table when someone with the customer mentality would have easily eased the situation by removing the drink. We will NEVER return to this restaurant again and I hope that word gets out about the POOR attitude the manager had with our group.

Excellent Service!! We stopped by here after seeing a google search that named the Esquire as having the longest wooden bar!!! It was very long!!! Unique place. Our server, Jesse, was exceptional and very friendly. We ordered a frozen margarita and a Diet Coke!!! We were served a huge bottle of water when we first sat down- it really hit the spot!!! We ordered the homemade chips and dip- very tasty!!! You must try this unique place!!!

Very old building with excellent food and cocktails. I would recommend to anyone. Service was excellent and I recommend the Pirate cocktail!

We visited the Esquire while on a tour in San Antonio. We had the brisket fries.....they were great! I would go back just for that but the bar/dining room is very nice.

If you do go, ask for seating where you can see the River. We did not know it was River facing, but enjoyed our drinks at the longest bar in Texas. The service was fine, the beer was cold. The tiled floors in the hallways are an olde world treat.

Visited The Esquire lower level with 12 people, the wouldn’t let us divide our checks in to 4. We explained that we didn’t have cash to pay eachother and they said we could do 3 checks but not 4. We had to leave.

Great place to grab a cocktail and food to eat. They have a full bar with a list of spirits and beers for everyone. The food is also tasty. The Wagyu burger was delicious and moist. BBQ pulled pork sandwiches was also tasty and tender. Nice place to relax after walking around the town.

Great selection and food. My husband enjoyed the selection of scotch and beers - jerk shrimp roll and bison burger are awesome

Wonderful hamburger eaten outside overlooking the riverwalk..service a bit slow but food and the view...terrific..

We three ladies just dropped in to see the longest wooden bar in Texas, but we found three seats available (thanks to a nice gentleman who moved down a seat). We looked over the cocktail menu, and ordered from that. The bartender, Jarrell, was personable and obviously an experienced mixologist. He was so entertaining that we stayed for another round. I can't speak for the food or the wait staff, but when I am in San Antonio I will definitely stop by here for cocktails!

The longest bar in San Antonio - I think. But the bar and burgers were great. Ate lunch around 2 pm. Sat right down at the bar. Bar tender was on his game. We were looking for quiet on the riverwalk and this was it. Recommend and would eat here again.

We stopped by for a drink and to see the longest bar in Texas. Yes, the wood bar is truly 100' long. Needless to say, the Bartenders get in a lot of steps each day. Our Bartender, Marcel, was great. He told us the history of the location which was educational. I had the Esquire Ale and my Wife had a Brut Nature glass of bubbles. It's not often that you find a bar serving a Brut Nature Champagne which has no residual sugar and is bone dry, just the way she likes it. Overall, a nice stop for a drink.

Was calling in to inquire about a reservation for their upstairs and downstairs and Yolanda was such a great help! Assisted me in all my questions even though I called in multiple times. Looking forward to our reservation and dining here because customer service over the phone was already Stellar!

This is a historic and fun tavern with supposedly the longest wooden bar in Texas at over 100 feet. It is the oldest bar on the Riverwalk as it opened a few hours after prohibition ended in 1933. Servers Mara and Vero made our experience stellar. We sat on the patio overlooking the river and ordered a dark beer on tap, salad, and squash. They kindly brought us key lime pie and chocolate cake to celebrate our anniversary. It was a fun evening made special by Mara and Vero. Thank you, ladies!

Construction is currently obscuring their sign an entrance (Jan 2020). When I made my way to the door, the place was way long. Plenty of bar seats and booth seats. I was seated quickly without a reservation. An excellent margarita arrived soon and I had a bologna melt that was great. The balance of the menu had “regular” and some eclectic stuff. It was a bit noisy, but seemed to be the normal atmosphere

Really nice selection of local craft beers, my wife had a nice cocktail. The lighting was perfect the service was impeccable. we did not eat just a before dinner drink but the food around us looked amazing.

This historic bar was wonderful to visit and they have a nice line up of drinks. But the staff was a bit to be desired. Our bartender was unfriendly and not attentive, would’ve liked another drink but after sitting with an empty glass for over 15 minutes we decided to take our business elsewhere. It was not busy at all.

We came to San Antonio with my friends. Some local guide recommended this tavern to us. We booked a table at 7:30, they took our order in 30 min, brought some water after 40 min, drinks in 50 minutes. 21:20 we were sitting without any food, appetizers, hungry and angry. Decided to leave and eat at some other place:( every disappointed. If you want to waist your time you can come here, otherwise look for some other place to eat.

We were in town for our son's graduation from BMT. Had 9 people in our group to celebrate. We anted to eat along the River Walk but many restaurants along the river walk are over priced. This is not the case with Esquire you can get a meal for $12 - $20, plus they have daily lunch specials. We chose Esquire for three reasons: 1. price 2. variety in meal choices 3. historic atmopshere. It didn't disappoint in any catagory.

We stopped here for dinner while visiting the River Walk. It's a nice looking bar. We enjoyed their local beers plus a Frito Pie and Bison burger. Angela, our waitress, did a nice job serving us.

We stopped here while our daughter was at the Joci Awards. We walked in on the street level. We seated outside on the upstairs patio overlooking the river. Had a wonderful server. Ordered a beer and old fashioned. Also ordered some appetizers. Appetizers are small, but tasty. We did not see the lower level/speak easy until we were leaving. Will try that next time.

We entered on street level and had to look around a bit to find it, due to construction. We decided to have drinks downstairs, as we weren’t eating. The drink menu is different down there, and somewhat limited by what is available at this smaller bar that was a speakeasy. The bartender got friendlier as the night went on, thankfully. He made some creative drinks off menu.

We met an old friend here for drinks and loved the history. The ownership is obviously dedicated to the preservation of this landmark from 1933. Pick a booth with your friend as they are very responsible and enforcing Covid distancing. We only had beer and wine but apparently the Prohibition-era cocktails are excellent. I enjoyed the Viva Amarillo Pilsner and the High Wheel 56 IPA both San Antonio crafts. Check out the 87-year old ceiling and legit ‘longest bar in Texas’ as featured via the throwback Ripley’s- Believe-it-or-Not old ad I found. There’s an open gathering area adjacent the balcony of the rear they offer on the Riverwalk side. The downstairs area is supposedly opening soon. Don’t let the construction with scaffolding block you, just go upstairs for a great time .

Stay away!!! I came here on business ordered an entree one hour later I was done. The charged me for the beer I half drank and had no mercy for my situation.

This is a nice little Tavern off the St Marys Bridge @ the River walk. This is the areas longest bar. We went on a weekday and it was packed so I recommend calling for reservations. The Interior of the restaurant is dark and manly. The drink menus large however I asked our waitress about a drink and she had the worst most undescriptive response I have ever heard, it was so bad she talked me right out of getting a drink. So I just ordered an iced tea....which took almost 30 minutes to receive as our waitress was distracted. I had the shrimp sandwich and it was delicious, fresh , crunchy and tasty. All the ingredients were local and fresh even the lettuce and tomato. It doesn't come with fries so I had to order seprate which were also tasty. Prices were reasonable too. My only complaint was the distracted waitress, no refills the whole time we were there.

Asked for less ice in lemonade, told can't do that. Asked for fried pickles, can't do that. (It's on the menu) but we're going to change the menu. Asked for onion rings, can't do that even though it's comes on another entre.

I opted to visit the downstairs area of Esquire as I was there on a Tuesday night and they have a chicken & champagne pairing. My server was excellent and a wealth of information about the small menu downstairs. I ordered a plate of truffle deviled eggs to pair with my chicken and champagne. The champagne choice is limited to the $22/glass pick and you get one piece of chicken with one glass of bubbly. One piece was plenty as it was a good sized piece. The champagne paired well with the chicken as well as the eggs. This was a great choice for something different! Definitely will be stopping in again to try something else.

This place was a surprise. The chicken fried steak was crispy and the mashed potatoes were yummy. The interior is dark but it doesn’t change the food or service. There are only a couple of tables outside.

This place had good reviews, was on the river walk and close to our hotel so I made a dinner reservation. The walk over was interesting due to all of the construction around it. Sidewalks closed and a collection of homeless people asking for money as we arrived. The bar and building are very cool. Longest wooden bar in Texas, original ceiling...very old. The food was just ok. I had the cheeseburger which had a strong garlic and salty taste. Getting fries or a side was an extra $4. My husband had the chicken fried ribeye which he thought was mediocre. It came with mashed potatoes. It was $2 extra for garlic toast. If I go back, I will just have a drink.

We really enjoyed The Esquire on our recent trip to San Antonio. Most of the other bars on the Riverwalk have a corporate-chain feel while this one does not--it has a great ambiance and awesome selection of drinks. The staff took the time to explain the various types of mezcals and sotols they offer as I sampled them. We went back for a total of three times in five days we enjoyed it so much. If you order cocktails, you can see the craftmanship and care put into each one. I highly recommend this bar (both the upstairs and downstairs) to anyone visiting San Antonio.

Food was so salty that it was nearly inedible. Atmosphere was great however. I’d just stick to drinks.

A very interesting establishment with good food and drinks. It features the longest bar in Texas and is on the Riverwalk. My wife and I went there twice and tried several menu items and drinks, we enjoyed all of them. Shelby, our server both nights, was wonderful. Shelby gave very attentive service, providing really good menu suggestions in a most pleasant manner.

Been to many bars, taverns and fancy drinking establishments from NYC to Moscow to Shanghai but,The Esquire is by far my overall favorite. It has the longest bar in town and period decor reminiscent of an older era but my preference is because of its ambiance of subdued lighting and darken wood furnishings that resonates with my being taken back to a time of romantic nostalgia. Just gives me a great, homey feeling despite the scattering of tourists from the adjoining River Walk. Music was appropriate for the time period, food and service were excellent and even the restrooms were a pleasant pleasure. Can't wait to go back.

This tavern is a gorgeous historical marker. Inside is dark and cozy booths, candlelit and classy. The 100 foot bar is stocked with vintage spirits and the menu full of not so ordinary refreshments. The menu also a combination of tastefully different flavors. The guns was happy to find a favorite Irish whiskey but I stayed local with a Texan hefeweizen. We sat outside to enjoy the weather and lit up trees. Good food, good spirits, good company, and much merry making we had!

We had difficulty finding the Esquire on the Riverwalk, but a telephone call for directions and a bit of perseverance paid off. When we got there, another challenge of climbing some steep stairs confronted us, so another phone call. The hostess came downstairs, unlocked the door and escorted us via elevator to the entrance. All this might sound like a complaint, but not the case. It was an adventure and showed the patience and "can do" spirit of the hostesses. Noisy, perhaps even boisterous, but a lot of fun with a good hamburger and delicious key lime pie. It was a great evening plus a cultural experience. Credit for the hostesses and waitress (Lynn) for going "above and beyond"! If you want to see how a business can last successfully for 100 years, go to the Esquire!

Stopped in for a beer at this classic old bar ….. stayed for a Wagyu burger! Amy was our bar tender and she made us some great drinks. If you are in the San Antonio River City Center don’t miss this classic old bar!

Good service, good food, good drinks, and great location. Pretty much nothing else to say. I would go for one of their old fashions. You'll likely not score a seat outside but you can try.

We had dinner there last night, and it was a fun experience. Personally, I would prefer for the place not to be as dark. Our waitress was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. Items we especially enjoyed were the mac & cheese with chorizo, the shrimp toast, fried pickles and grits & grillades. We felt that the drinks were too pricey, and that’s the reason I am giving it a 4 and not a 5

This place is classic, just what they said it was. Long bar, great atmosphere and their craft cocktails do not disappoint. I had the smoked brisket sandwich on Texas toast which was amazing.

Daniel was one of the best bartenders that has ever waited on me! He was very knowledgeable and made the best drinks ever. Also, they have a BLT to die for. Thank you Daniel!!!

We walked in and the hostess didn’t ask how many for dinner, she asked if we were just drinking or there to eat. Hmm, ok. We said we were there for dinner and were put in the table closest to the door, in a dark corner. All of the other empty tables appeared to have been RESERVED. She then went over to the bar and said something to another female employee and they both looked our way. Not sure what that was about but was rather strange. After that, the experience was relatively good. The waitress was nice, not overly friendly. The beer and food was good. We had the pork schnitzel and the cheeseburger. Still not sure why all of the nicer tables in the restaurant had reserved signs on them because no one was seated in them. We felt like we were put in the ‘time-out’ table.

Turned up for dinner, had to put our name down and wait around 20 mins for a table. Ambience and food is excellent - well worth visiting! The menu is great and something for everyone, having oil lamps and great decor makes it feel really special! Knowledgable servers who are very helpful and friendly

Had a super vibe, even though it’s a tavern our kids were welcomed, they are 17 and 12 so not little ones. Very historic location, and Devore represents the time period without looking or feeing old. We had great service and I had one of if not the best old fashioned I’ve ever had.

This is a fun place to visit-but very, very noisy! it was hard to visit. Food was good-I had a chicken taco soup that was very tasty. My husband had a burger which he really enjoyed but not supberb. Service was great-we were there around 8 pm with no waiting but it was really busy earlier.

The Esquire Tavern is a must-see location in San Antonio. It was very close to our hotel so it was really nice to sit at the bar and have a drink. They have a nice list of cool house cocktails to choose from too. It was recommended to us by a local and I think it lived up to the hype.

How have I never heard of this place?? Historic and well situated along the river walk is my new favorite go-to. Craft cocktails and the most delicious burgers! They have a full menu, but I’d read their burgers were special - they are! Sirloin/shortrib/brisker combo. They also have draft beer. Decor is dark, and inviting. Just the right amount of quirkiness to make it real and not hokey. Service was excellent. Don’t miss it!

Not understanding the ratings that I’m seeing here. The service was terrible, and you know that it really is when the place isn’t busy!! This place has potential, but you at least have to try!!

The drinks now were excellent. The wait staff was excellent. The food was poor for $30 an entree. I had catch of the day, he had steak.

We had to hit this place as it has the longest bar in SA....ok - that is about it. The staff are just there...no energy, not happy to see you, almost as if we were bothering them buy ordering drinks. The bartenders standard answer was “that’s cool” - must have said it to 10 of us. We were just a party of two, but everyone else around was saying the same.
A historic bar and a hopping meeting place
We had heard much about the Esquire over the years but this was our first visit. When we arrived around 6:30, the place was full, with happy people still enjoying their cocktails or getting ready for dinner. While it serves dinner, and the menu is quite attractive, this is clearly a bar, first and foremost. We enjoyed a perfect Manhattan and a French 75, while taking in the congenial crowd. As we were leaving for dinner elsewhere, we saw some tempting dishes in the booths we passed by. Perhaps our next visit will be for dinner.
